Once the judges had picked the winners, we were getting ready for the award ceremony but then – I'm sure you can guess – COVID-19 put a stop to it. But that wasn’t going to prevent us from congratulating our winners, so over the past few weeks we have been holding mini socially distanced award ceremonies to present our winners with their awards.

Cllr Bird said: “I feel very honoured to have been able to present our worthy Civic Award winners with their certificates. I have been truly humbled by their stories, achievements and dedication to helping their communities. Greenwich is a special borough and we are lucky to have so many great people giving their time and efforts to make it extra special!”

“This was in recognition of her outstanding commitment to the local community for over 50 years as a Christian Aid fundraiser, Girl Guide leader/District Commissioner and Greenwich Winter Night Shelter volunteer. We were extremely proud of our Mum and grateful that, at 95 years of age, she still lived independently and was able to pursue her numerous interests until the turn of the year.”

PCSO Henry Lawton won the Act of Courage Award for holding an aggressive theft suspect whilst injured until other officers attended.

Ponder art outside the gallery walls Not yet ready to head back inside to get your art fix? For NOW Gallery’s latest commission, you won’t have to. The gallery has invited interdisciplinary collective Resolve to explore themes of community and future cities as part of the London Design Festival. The resulting site-specific installation, Close from Afar, can be found outside the gallery and plays host to a three-part public programme of performances, workshops, screenings and talks, lending a platform to grassroots creatives from the local area. The titles of each daily theme will be taken from Ghanaian, Lithuanian and Nepalese proverbs, exploring how we use our senses to connect with wider histories, ideas and cultures.

A beacon of hope for classical music: Bromley and Beckenham International Music Festival Out of the darkness, isolation and mass cancellations bestowed upon society as a result of the coronavirus pandemic comes a ray of hope for London’s live classical music scene: the inaugural Bromley and Beckenham International Music Festival. Conjured up in lockdown by three Bromley-based musicians frustrated by the catastrophic impact the pandemic is having on live music, the festival hopes to be a ‘unique’ and ‘vibrant’ event fit to bring the community back together again, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Pianist Benjamin Grosvenor and violinists Hyeyoon Park and Raja Halder are the brains behind the new music festival, which is taking place this week as a series of socially-distanced chamber music concerts at St Peter & St Paul’s Parish Church in Bromley.

Highlights include a Beethoven violin concerto (Thursday 17), Brahms and Mahler Piano Quartets (Friday 18), Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet (Saturday 19) and Dvorak’s Piano Quintet No.2 (Sunday 20).

[the festival’s artistic directors] and I happened to bump into each other at the beginning of July and we got talking about how this lockdown has affected the performing arts.

Our industry was first to close and will be the last to get back to work. We felt very frustrated about not being able to perform to a live audience, as most of our concerts at home and abroad were cancelled, so we decided to start a festival in our local area in order to forge something positive out of the crisis.

We spoke to festival director Raja Halder to find out more.

The idea is to bring world class music to the local community while also helping some of our key workers in the borough. We are donating 50 percent of our profits to St Christopher’s Hospice, a local organisation that relies on charitable support, that has struggled with the closing of its

HOM: Practically speaking, how did you go about organising the festival? Was the process made more difficult by the lockdown?

RH: It was certainly a lot to think about in a short space of time, but we are extremely grateful to Reverend James Harrett at Bromley Parish Church for his help and for letting us use this beautiful venue. A lot of the organisation has taken place since the lockdown began to ease, as it’s since then that we’ve been able to visit the venue for acoustic checks and to discuss practicalities in person.

HOM: You have some very exciting names on the line up. Can you tell us a bit more about this? And are there any names in particular you’re happy to have performing?

RH: Between the three of us, we know many incredible musicians from very diverse backgrounds. For the festival, we have drawn on these connections and have invited some truly fabulous artists and friends with whom we are really looking forward to working: violinist Tomo Keller, double bassist Leon Bosch, violist Timothy Ridout and cellist Bartholomew LaFollette.

HOM: What genres of music will the festival span?

RH: This is first and foremost a classical music festival, but in future years we hope to explore other genres and already have a few ideas for this. That said, classical music is a pretty broad field, offering around 500 years of music to work with!

Because of the virus, we’ve been limited this year with group size and also because of the uncertain regulations surrounding singers and wind players. Still, we have put together a very diverse programme.

HOM: You’ve marketed the event as an international festival. How tricky has it been to secure the international element in light of recent travel restrictions?

RH: The name reflects our intentions going forward, as we intend to draw on our connections in the music business worldwide. Due to the current situation, this year’s artists are all UK-based or partly-UK based, but their diverse backgrounds reflect the international nature of the festival.

HOM: At maximum capacity, events will hold audience numbers of around 100. What sort of measures will be in place to keep things safe?

RH: Working alongside the church, we have put a lot of thought into how to make sure our events are safe for both the audience and the musicians involved. For starters, all concerts are one hour long, without intermission.

The church ordinarily has capacity for 400 seated visitors, but to enable social distancing, audience numbers are restricted to 100. The church has ample outside space for sociallydistanced queuing, and the seats and public areas will be disinfected between each performance.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope the audience takes away from seeing a live concert as part of the festival?

RH: For music-lovers, the lockdown has been an opportunity to catch up on a lot of listening, but nothing can replace the atmosphere and intensity of a live performance.

We are so looking forward to being able to play for an audience once again, and we hope that the public find the experience of the concerts to be as richly emotive as we are sure they will be for us.

food Review: L’Oculto Cocina | Wine Bar | Shop

Brockley’s superb tapas joint L’Oculto will make you thankful dining out is an option again A carefully selected wine list, a passionate head chef, an everevolving menu of dishes made with seasonal produce – such are the ingredients that make a decent restaurant. For the more fickle (or perhaps ambiance minded’), so are trendy interiors (exposed brick walls, the warm glow of fairy lights) and a buzzy atmosphere.

L’Oculto, a neighbourhood tapas joint in Brockley, offers all above and frankly, even if the food wasn’t half as good as I’m about to tell you it is, I’d join team aesthetics and become a regular simply for the chance to sit in a restaurant that feels like the place to be, without having to travel into central London to find it, writes Holly O’Mahony…

I’m not a Brockley local (though I confess, since my recent tapas pilgrimage I’ve had a casual browse on Rightmove), and only came across L’Oculto – which opened in February 2019 – during the deepest, darkest depths of lockdown, when writing about the best restaurants offering takeaways for the Weekender.

Entirely women-run, the restaurant is the lovechild of business partners Teresa Holmes and Ana Gomez, with Galician chef Irene Lorenzo Muñoz heading up the kitchen. Ana and Teresa built their reputation as importers of stellar Spanish produce, supplying stock to top London restaurants including Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, as well as running a stall at Brockley Market.

Knowing they were capable of running their own show, the pair launched Little L’Oculto as a month-long pop-up, the success of which saw the concept transferred to the (now-closed) 25-cover Little L’Oculto wine and tapas bar on Loampit Hill in 2016. Three years later, the duo knew it was time to upsize again, and after a successful crowdfunding campaign, managed to open the 40-cover L’Oculto Cocina on Brockley Road.

L’Oculto means ‘the hidden one’, and with its specialism in low intervention, organic and biodynamic wines paired with innovative, modern tapas dishes, there’s plenty its loyal fan base rightly want to keep hush-hush about it. And it’s for these regular customers, Teresa tells me, that the team changes the menu www.weekender.co.uk

every few weeks, meaning there’s almost always something new to come back for.

Everything here is made from scratch, from the prelude of house-cured meats on the charcuterie board to the coffee ice cream that concludes our meal. In between, a dish of Ajoblano – a cold, white Spanish soup – was creamy and tart, the usual grape topping swapped for acidic beetroot and an exotic peach vinaigrette.

Then came a second cold dish, Salpicón (seafood salad), which is not for the squeamish with its thick chunks of octopus tentacle and the fattest mussels you’re likely to find out of the sea. It’s a classic Spanish dish but one you’re unlikely to find many other London restaurants attempting. No, it wasn’t my favourite with its overwhelming tastes of sea and raw onion, but I recommend you be bold and sample it all the same.

What followed, however, I’d head back for alone. The ‘squid black fideuà’ – fideuà being Valencia’s answer to paella with noodles replacing the rice – came with angel hair pasta and was truly heavenly. I scraped every last squid-ink blackenked morsel from the pan.

The pulled, spiced hogget leg could have packed a bigger punch with a little more spice, but was so comforting a dish I’m sure I’ll look back on it fondly

every time I’m craving a gastronomic hug. More Mexican than Spanish, the lamb came sodden in its juices, with thick wedges of sweet gherkin nestled at its side. On top sat a fried potato cake which proved the perfect tool for mopping up the addictive mess.

The meal came paired with wines recommended by Teresa. I was fully sold on the first glass, a Le Meprese Blanco, which was full-bodied with spicy notes and as close as you can get to a sherry without actually being one. My companion was won over by the Soplón, a lighter, creamier organic natural white.

There were desserts, too. A mild, caramel-topped flan which was pleasant if forgettable. But the Santiago tart is a must if on the menu – crumbly, dry (but purposefully so) with hints of almond and even subtler suggestions of citrus, moistened and enlivened by a scoop of coffee ice cream.

Brockley resident or not, L’Oculto is a restaurant to celebrate and to celebrate at. With it, Ana and Teresa have put SE4 on the foodie map as a serious culinary destination – and you’ll want to book your table before the crowds start flocking there from all over London.

L’Oculto might mean ‘the hidden one’, but it won’t stay that way for long.

Businesses and community groups have also been getting involved by decorating their shop windows or creating art pieces for display. The Knit & Natter group, the longest running adult activity group at Greenwich Libraries, will be yarn bombing Powis Street, Woolwich this week.

Capital Art Gallery is one of many businesses taking part in Royal Greenwich – It’s Time! and is giving you the chance to have your art displayed in a gallery. Entry is free and everyone can take part, from budding artists to professionals, but there’s just one catch – you only have one day to create your masterpiece! The competition will take place on Saturday 26 September and participants must attend the gallery between 9am and

Thames and I: Exhibition, photo walk and zine making workshop Thames and I is a photographic exhibition on show at the Camera Club in Kennington, which invites the viewer to explore people’s very personal interactions with the River Thames. Each work comes with a written narrative by the artist, explaining their story, objective and wishes. You can either visit the historic gallery itself, or explore the exhibition online. In addition, flex your art skills in a a zinemaking workshop on Sunday 20 (10am - 1pm), which will also be available to take part in online.

Ever wanted to trawl the entirety of the River Thames, observing its distinct segments and how they bleed into one another? Created by artist Veronique Chance, this unusual installation is a chance to study each portion of the river in isolation. Veronique ran the length of the river, splitting it into 14 segments (each representing a day’s run), and uploading the footage she captured from her travels online. Through this, Veronique navigates her running route as a fly-over journey, exploring the river’s terrain at a distance.

Audiences will be able to experience the work through the artist’s website, vimeo and social media.

Event with Scott Minto, Shaun Bartlett and Jonatan Johansson to raise money for CACT

On Thursday 1 October, Charlton Athletic legend Scott Minto will host a virtual event with former players Jonatan Johansson and Shaun Bartlett to talk about stories from their playing days at the Club in the 2000s.

For the virtual event, supporters will have the chance to buy a viewing ticket, or a ticket that includes a wine and pizza set.

Alongside the former players talking about their playing days, a silent auction will take place, with the chance to bid on Charlton memorabilia and a number of exclusive events and experiences.

Prices for families or households for viewing tickets cost £10, whilst the pizza and wine tickets cost £75.

All funds raised from the virtual event will help CACT’s work supporting the most vulnerable members of the community.

Since March, CACT has been supporting members of the community who need it most by running the Greenwich Community Hub, adapting programmes for online delivery and ensuring a COVID-19 safe return.

Scott has supported and hosted a number of Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) fundraising

events in recent years, including regular quizzes during lockdown.

He also made a number of befriending calls to participants on CACT’s programmes and visited members of the Charlton Upbeats, the Down’s syndrome football team, at their homes.

In total, 211 befriending call referrals were made for shielded and vulnerable residents.

More than 11,000 referrals were made from the Community Hub, funded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich, signposting residents to relevant services.

Christine Wink, 75, said the Community Hub “really truly put a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Donations will ensure CACT can continue to support those who need it most.

History

From vinegar to timber, via Nicaragua and Montego Bay

Mary Mills I have been writing about Morden Wharf and its industries for three or four weeks now.

The past of this area is very complex and there are lots of businesses which have been left out. This article is just picking up some of the more interesting of the others...

One of the earliest firms on Morden Wharf was Willis and Wright who signed a lease on the furthest part of the wharf downriver in 1842. Here on the riverside today is a long jetty before the riverside path turns inland. This is now called Primrose Pier and it was refurbished by Groundwork in 2002 with a new surface, seating and signage in order to be used for fishing or for a view point. There appear however now to be new plans for it.

tarry mixture of naphtha and acetic acid - to this lime is added... leaving.. a black strong smelling compound ... black lime salt ..which is then mixed with sulphuric acid and distilled ...... resulting in a mixture of acids possessing a disagreeable sour taste. Vinegar thus prepared is .... most injurious to health.

Presumably this very cheap and nasty way of making something like vinegar was not profitable since they left the site in 1861.

Willis and Wright were the current managers of Champion’s Vinegar Brewery.

This major vinegar provider was based on the City’s northern border on the corner of Old Street and City Road. This is now the site of early 20th Century housing built by the Sutton Housing charity and, apparently, in the 1940s was known as ‘The Vinegar Ground’ – having latterly the site of vinegar manufacture by Sarsons.

Champions Vinegar manufacture dated back to 1705 but and only had taken on this site in 1794. The firm had a number of successive partners but the Champion family remained involved throughout and by 1832 they were the fourth largest vinegar brewer in the country. A William Henry Wright was a partner from around this time and he was joined by George Willis, who ran the company following a series of deaths in the Champion family

Another firm on Morden Wharf was, Segar Emery, an American firm who leased a site in this area of Morden Wharf in 1904. They were timber merchants, specialising in mahogany. Emery was an American, with a timber business, the Emery Lumber Company and Samuel Segar was an English timber merchant, with an office in Bishopsgate.

but the lease of the site at Morden Wharf was signed by Elizabeth Champion.

Three years later a further lease was signed for a site to the north and Willis and Wright began to make bricks there. They had already built ‘a tar factory, house, chemical factory, and other buildings’ which had been

the cause of some nuisance when ‘noxious matter‘ had leaked. It appears they were distilling the tar to make naphtha – tar oil.

Although it has to be a matter of conjecture as to why a major vinegar and mustard manufacturer would want to do this a clue can be found in a

report on Food Adulteration produced in 1879. This summarised, says: “An inferior kind of vinegar is made by the ....distillation of wood in the manufacture of naphtha. The wood is placed in closed ovens and is heated to drive all the gases into condensers where they form a black

The Emery Company had timber rights in Nicaragua and the business appears to have been involved in the importation of tropical hardwoods. In Greenwich they had a mahogany saw mill plant and a dock on the riverside.

In the 20th century the wharves on Morden Wharf gradually became more involved in the transhipment of goods made elsewhere rather than sites where actual manufacturing went on. The wharf here was named Primrose by Froud Ltd who had leased it in the 1930s but why this name was chosen is not known – it seems to be far too ‘pretty’ a name for an area which must have been pretty dirty and smelly in the 1930s. Soon after the inland part of the site was used by Molassine.

I wrote about Molassine, animal food manufacturer, previously in this paper.

In the 1970s the Primrose Wharf Company produced a booklet advertising their wharfage services and what could be provided. There were of instance, customs and excise facilities and tanks storage for liquids. There was also open air storage and a heavy lift crane. There is a list of the shipping agents who they worked with and an impressive list of ports which they could export to - Kingston, Jamaica, Tampa Bay... Montego Bay and many more, all in the Caribbean and Central America. This was to be the future of several Greenwich riverside sites.

Like Segar Emery many firms on Morden Wharf were short-lived and their sites and their layout changed and overlapped.

At the end of the 19th century Bowater’s supplied newsprint to both the Daily Mail and the Daily Chronicle. The lease was in the name of Thames Export Packing Company from 1909 and work

here consisted of sorting, shredding and pressing of waste paper into bales for export. Following a fire the site was rebuilt in 1912 including a new entrance.

I will however just point out that they appear to be planning a boathouse which “could provide a permanent mooring for Gloriana - the Monarch’s Royal Rowbarge, which was ‘expertly crafted to mark Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012’.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Pettman Crescent] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by SGN who need to carry out Gas replacement works.

2. The Order will come into operation on 21st September 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 3 weeks. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering Nathan Way from Pettman Crescent (banned Left Turn).

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Pettman Crescent, Plumstead Road, Pettman Crescent, Western Way and Eastern Way. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH The Greenwich (Prohibition of Motor Vehicles) (No. 3) Experimental Traffic Order 2020 1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) has made the above- mentioned Order under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The Order will come into operation on 24th September 2020.

2. The effect of the Order would be on an experimental basis to prohibit all motor vehicles from entering into, exiting from or proceeding in: a) Pelton Road, at a point approximately 12 metres east of its junction with Christchurch Way; b) Rodmere Street, its eastern arm, at a point approximately 18 metres from its junction with Vanbrugh Hill; and c) Walnut Tree Road, at a point approximately 14 metres from its junction with Vanbrugh Hill.

Any person may object to the making of the permanent Order for the purpose of such indefinite continuation, within a period of six months beginning with the date on which the experimental Order comes into force or, if the Order is varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of the 1984 Act, beginning with the date on which the variation or modification or the latest variation or modification comes into force.
