The fund can be used by small and micro businesses to create new apprenticeship training opportunities or to upskill an existing employee through one of the new apprenticeship standards. Further government incentives of up to £3,000 are also available for each new apprentice hired.

There are over 700 apprenticeship standards available. These are nationally recognised qualifications from Level 2 to level 7, which is equivalent to a master’s degree.

Greenwich Local Labour and Business (GLLaB) can support businesses to hire an apprentice. A virtual launch event on 15 September, chaired

by Cllr Denise Scott-McDonald, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills, will be a great chance for Royal Greenwich employers to learn more about the hiring process. You’ll also have the chance to hear from a panel of experts about how the levy transfer fund works, the benefits of hiring an apprentice and much more.

Give your bike the TLC it needs at one of our monthly Dr Bike sessions! Professional mechanics from Cycle Confident will check your bike to make sure it’s roadworthy, and make small adjustments and repairs if necessary, such as tuning your gears, adjusting your brakes or pumping your tyres.

They will also be able to advise and refer you to a local bike shop for anything more serious that cannot be fixed there and then. Please allow approximately 15 minutes for your bike to be checked – if you turn up just before the end of the session, the mechanics may not have time to fully check your bike.

All sessions run from 12pm to 3pm and there's no need to book, just turn up with your bike.

Last Chance: See the sky up close The annual Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year exhibition is currently showing at the National Maritime Museum. Theatre It was nearly six months ago that Greenwich Theatre went dark, closing its doors to the public as part of the nationwide bid to prevent the spread of Covid-19. The theatre never really lost its presence, or its focus, though, running a spate of brilliant arts initiatives in the online sphere. Panto season might be off the cards this year, but the theatre is preparing to reopen with an exciting autumn programme filled with plenty you won’t want to miss, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Greenwich Theatre is poised to reopen… here’s what’s in store this autumn

Within days of closing down the building, artistic director James Haddrell launched Greenwich Connects: an online programme of weekly interactive theatre opportunities, incorporating Monday monologues, Wednesday Wisdom, Flashback Fridays and Submission Sundays. In July, he premiered an all-new digital production of Steven Berkoff’s The Secret Love Life of Ophelia, in which Greenwich Theatre patron Dame Helen Mirren made a guest appearance. Now, James is tentatively preparing to reopen the physical doors to the theatre, launching an autumn programme in late September. Here’s what’s coming up over the next few months.

Holly O’Mahony: When we last spoke, you mentioned a phased reopening of the theatre from September, kicking off with cabaret-style comedy performances in the studio followed by larger shows in the main auditorium. Is this still the plan?

James Haddrell: Yes absolutely. I’m keen to welcome audiences back as soon as possible, so rather than waiting for the government go-ahead to open at full capacity, we’ll be hosting a whole range of events for audiences in a socially distanced way – from cabaret and stand-up comedy in the studio to drama, music and special events in the main auditorium.

HOM: What can we expect from the autumn programme?

JH: Things kick off on September 26 with political commentator and presenter Steve Richards who’ll be bringing his Rock ‘n’ Roll Politics show to Greenwich for the first time – and what better time could there be for an interrogation of just what exactly goes on at Westminster?

Comedians Juliette Burton (October 3) and Richard Stott (November 1) will be appearing in the studio, and we’ve also programmed a special screening of Nosferatu, the first ever film based on Dracula, complete with a new live score (October 18). There will also be music in the form of a show about Billie Holiday (October 24) and a celebration of Tom Lehrer (November 1). Also look out for an online cookalong for children at half-term and further shows yet to be announced.

awarded three small commissions to companies looking to work digitally so we’ll be presenting their work as the weeks go by.

HOM: You previously shared with us your plans to apply for a share of the government’s Covid-19 emergency arts grant.

Christmas, theatres just can’t risk the expenditure of making a big festive show if they’re going to be prevented from selling the tickets. At Greenwich, we spend around £250,000 on the pantomime every year – that’s not a sum we can gamble with. However that’s not to say we won’t be celebrating the festive season in style...

HOM: Speaking of Christmas, Greenwich Theatre is usually home to a brilliant panto, headed up by the one and only Andrew Pollard. However, recent reports have suggested panto season will be cancelled this year. Is that the case?

JH: Unfortunately we’ve had to take the incredibly painful decision not to stage the pantomime this year, but we have some brilliant news. Andrew Pollard, Anthony Spargo and the team will all be with us at Easter next year when we’ll finally be able to unveil [their latest show] The Queen Of Hearts.

And in the meantime, look out for news of a festival of seasonal treats at the theatre, with a main-house family Christmas show, a studio show for young children, comedy events and more.

HOM: Practically speaking, what sorts of measures will you be putting in place to reopen the theatre safely?

JH: Visitors to the theatre will see perspex screens at the box office and the bar, and will be asked to follow a oneway route around the theatre. Shows in the autumn won’t have intervals to avoid queues at the bar or for the toilets, and

shows will be distanced on stage, too.

HOM: Social distancing on stage must present some challenges for the companies involved!

JH: Frankly, there’s nothing more inspiring to an artist than having to find a way to work in the face of adversity. I think a lot of very creative shows are going to emerge from this.

HOM: Lastly, what does it mean to you as Greenwich Theatre’s artistic director to be able to reopen the venue after so many months of closure?

JH: I’ve worked at Greenwich Theatre in a range of roles for almost 20 years, so seeing it closed for such a long time has been painful. Since I took over the theatre the whole team has worked incredibly hard to clear a lot of historic debt and to stabilise a theatre that was struggling to survive. After years of saving every pound we could this should have been our year to grow. It’s now going to be a much slower process but I’m determined to see the theatre flourish – and if our bid to the arts council is successful, there are a lot of exciting projects on the horizon. For now, though, it’s just a waiting game.

Greenwich + Docklands International Festival: the final highlights

The annual Greenwich and Docklands International Festival (GDIF) is bringing its two-week programme of eclectic street theatre, dance and art installations to a close this weekend, but there’s still plenty to see before the final curtain call. All events are free to attend, but timed tickets must be booked on the GDIF website in advance to aid social distancing.

Residents of Plumstead and Well Hall Pleasance! Keep your eyes peeled this weekend: a travelling gaggle of street performers will be popping up in your neighbourhood in an explosion of song, dance and stunts. Look out also for GDIF’s Weaving Together installation, featuring weaves created by local people from their places of isolation in the months leading up to the festival.

Created in response to the murder of George Floyd, and co-produced with Theatre Royal Stratford East and the

Royal Docks Team, 846 Live is the brainchild of playwright Roy Williams, who commissioned a selection of black and Asian writers to create something around the theme of ‘eight minutes and 46 seconds’, the time white police officer Derek Chauvin spent kneeling on Floyd’s neck before he died. The works are being brought to life by actors and a live DJ.

food Review: La Chingada

This Mexican restaurant near Deptford offers far more than meets the eye The first thing to know about La Chingada is you won’t want to come here for the atmosphere. On appearance alone, this tiny joint mimics a brightly coloured kebab shop decked out with orange walls and multi-coloured high stools. A thin counter framing the shop front is all that’s on offer by way of seating (save for a couple of tables scattered uninvitingly outside) and behind the counter, the al pastor (spit-grilled pork) sweats and twirls just like your average doner. But pass up La Chingada for a more stylish or comfortable institution and you’ll be missing out on some of the best Mexican food in London, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The place has been growing a roaring reputation since it opened back in the hard-to-remember pre-Covid month of January. Whispers across the internet about its authenticity have recently been bolstered by a couple of favourable reviews in creditable publications, most notably from ES Magazine critic Jimi Famurewa.

Instead, I’m putting pen to paper here to add to the noise and sing my praises of its understated excellence.

I visited on a Friday, arriving just before 7pm in case the rumours of

queues forming were true (30-minutes later it became apparent that they were). The diners who placed their orders before and after me were Spanish-speaking – a verbal hint this was indeed the real deal.

Plonked on one of aforementioned garishly coloured stools, I was soon swilling a glass bottle of mandarin flavoured Jarritos – Mexico’s answer to Fanta? – that was as orange as the walls and evoked memories of the odd sunsoaked holiday of my childhood.

I’ll confess now: food wise, I’d ordered a slightly unusual (okay, carb-heavy and eyebrow-raisingly greedy) combination of tacos followed by a burrito, but hear me out: I’d read gushing reviews of both and couldn’t decide between them. And, slightly more virtuously, knew I’d want to write about both for this piece (so really, we’re all winners).

On deck lay two flavoursome corn tacos (all tacos must be ordered in pairs or fours) topped with a muddle of rustic, unfussy ingredients: fresh coriander, chopped onion, a sliver of pineapple, a wedge of lime and, of course, the marinated pork. On the

side sat a little pot of creamy salsa simply known as green sauce, which proved an essential ‘moist-maker’ (thank you Ross Geller) to what would otherwise have been a slightly dry affair. messy old business. As if pre-empting my discomfort, an observant chef had armed me with a thick wedge of napkins and I ended up using the lot.

Another paper boat brought my chicken burrito safely into shore, and it proved the ultimate parcel of comfort.

As I sunk my teeth into the plump, soft skin of the tortilla, I let out a sigh as my tastebuds gallivanted across the

medley of chipotle-smothered chicken, peppers, gooey cheese, rice, beans and lettuce waiting within. It was also huge; definitely a meal in itself with no need for starters. (Whoops.)

How do La Chingada’s burritos differ from those you might have sampled elsewhere in London? Well, for starters, the ingredients come more fused together than they would

at any build-your-own burrito bar.

It sounds basic, but this makes it a warmer, more harmonious affair to tuck into – even the lettuce is warm, but not unpleasantly so.

Meanwhile, the rice and beans come tossed in an oniony, tomatoey seasoning which tastes fresher and less processed than, say, the refried beans and coriander-studded rice combo on offer at other joints.

All in all, La Chingada serves Mexican fast food as enjoyed by Mexican people (and now, savvy Londoners).

Six months of adapted work for the vulnerable during this challenging time

It’s been a challenging six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but young people are now returning to school in many parts of the country.

An increasing number of in-person sessions have also started to be held, but Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has made sure to engage with its participants throughout the period, including via online and telephone-based platforms.

In-person delivery was temporarily brought to a halt at the height of the pandemic, but one key element of CACT’s work from the start of the outbreak in the UK in March was the birth of the Greenwich Community Hub. Run in partnership with partners including the Royal Borough of Greenwich, the Community Hub took more than 106,000 calls from residents in the Borough who needed

Speaking in April, Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “There are going to be many difficult days ahead and we are all going to need to pull together and dig deep to support and protect the most vulnerable people in our communities.”

An integral element of the Hub was to protect shielded and vulnerable residents in the Borough, with prescriptions collected and shopping deliveries made as part of the service.

CACT’s Equality, Diversity & Inclusion department hosted online Webinars on a range of contemporary issues, and with guest speakers including www.weekender.co.uk

Kick It Out’s Troy Townsend and the University of Greenwich’s Dr Laura William. More than 682 bookings were made for the Webinars, which took place between June and September.

Many sessions made an adapted return following FA and government guidelines, including the Down’s syndrome Charlton Upbeats football session, seeing over 25 weekly attendees and 35 unique participants.

The Premier League Kicks programme also made a return, with more than 55 young people attending sessions, including a targeted disability session.

The ever-popular holiday football courses made an adapted return at three venues this summer including Charlton Athletic’s Training Ground in New Eltham, with 2,639 young people taking part.

History

The Callebaut Freres and Tunnel Refineries

Mary Mills Last week we looked at Soames soap factory – so after they were closed by Unilever, what happened?

The buildings of the soap factory were taken over by Tunnel Refineries in 1934. This company had been founded by Callebaut Freres et Lejeune whose factory in Aalst, Belgium made glucose syrup from starch. By 1932 they thought it expedient to make starch for glucose production in England and so Tunnel Refineries was set up. The Callebaut family remained influential in the firm until 2000.

Tunnel produced its first batch of glucose syrup in 1935 using many of the old soap factory buildings and facilities but gradually small but significant improvements to the site were made.

Clients came from all over the country - the South Shore Rock Co of Blackpool and Bassets Liquorice Co. for two.

The Second World War led to serious shortages of raw materials and part of the premises was turned over to Thermalloys. - This was a filthy process – the ‘Black ‘Ole’ where a massive crucible smelted down scrap metal at extremely high temperatures to produce magnesium. From 1941 no glucose was made and the works produced tungsten powder for hardening steel.

An ersatz starch was also produced and the London Chain Company made bicycle chains. In 1943 Glenville moved in and began processing oils and fats.

After the war the idea was to produce glucose from starch. But the raw materials were poor and the glucose was of doubtful quality - they also made dextrose for medicinal purposes. Things gradually improved - Glenvilles returned and began producing custard powder and later instant

milk and ice pops. (I used to be told dire tales of some pranks involving these). In the 1950s new offices were built and in 1957 they began to mill their own starch from maize. This led to the silos being built– described recently by a well known architectural commentator, as structures which ‘would make Le Corbusier weep with envy’. . By the mid 60s suction gear had been installed and American maize was offloaded from coasters or lighters transhipped from bulk carriers.

mutual support - and these were an article of faith. The firm paid well, too. In 1982 dual processing of maize and wheat for starch began. Eventually despite the lesser purity of wheat-derived starch, maize was no longer used – complaints about the smell were a factor - and the silos fell out of use as wheat was brought in by lorry from the company’s own mill in Suffolk. The factory was now no longer Tunnel Glucose but had taken on the parent company’s name of Amylum.

By the late 1960s Tunnel could afford to rebuild the site and in 1969 the curved building which came to dominate the road end of the site was completed to designs by Dennis & Partners. Inside the site brick walls still remained with the ‘Thames Soap Works’ signage on them. In the 1970s an administration and canteen block completed to designs by the Brunton Boobyer Partnership of Greenwich and a new Mill House was added. There was an expansion of the maize grind and a new plant for producing Isosweet, high fructose glucose syrup.

Some changes were about attempts to counter constant complaints about the smell. I had known about the smell for a long long time, in the ‘60s when I still lived in Gravesend my friend’ husband worked in the lab at Tunnel. The smell on his shoes went everywhere with him. In the 2000s as the Councillor for the area I learnt a lot – I read lots of reports and papers about it, talked to staff from Amylum and the very experienced and sensible Greenwich EHOs. Smell is difficult to define, it can’t be measured and reactions to it are very subjective. There were endless reports which site engineers and council environmental staff struggled to sort it out.

As new residents moved into the Peninsula they sniffed the air and complained. But

silos being demolished

just as many long term residents said they loved it and that it reminded them of home. It never was really resolved.

In the early 1990s the production of grain neutral alcohol began at a new plant on the old Molassine site, initially as a joint venture with a Scottish distiller. It was the first all-new distillation plant in London since the Beefeater one which dated from 1908.

In 2000 Tate and Lyle took over Amylum and all the local involvement and the

funding for environmental projects which had come from Amylum ceased. Amylum had funded the old ILEA Environmental Centre in Bexley Road, Eltham (did I hear this is now up for sale?) as well as many improvements to the Riverside Path. In 2007 Syral, a subsidiary of a French conglomerate, Tereos, bought Tunnel from Tate and Lyle and in 2009 Syral closed the Tunnel works.

Soon after closure local people noticed that demolition was going on at the site and it appeared that a French demolition

crew was at work. They had not bothered with the formalities of informing Greenwich Council or the Port of London Authority as they were legally bound to do. One silo was blown up with no notice to neighbouring firms – wrecking production which used precision equipment. To some extent this was sorted out by the authorities and the jetties were saved but those wonderful silos were demolished. Soon the site was almost completely bare – everything stripped away and removed.

It is still awaiting redevelopment.

Alongside the Amylum site and even smellier was Molassine – whose site was eventually largely taken over by Tunnel. A history of that firm has appeared in an earlier Weekender.

– and it was always positive. How many factories have a management which puts in an effort with the local community like this? I guess there will be people telling me about lots of bad experiences.

Writing this –and in retrospect – I realise how much of a good thing Tunnel Glucose was. I knew people who worked for them from the 1950s on and on the whole it seemed a good natured sort of work place.

Later as a local councillor I discovered how much money and personal effort went into many local environmental projects

The stories my friend’s husband told us in the ‘60s about the work and people at Tunnel was almost my first introduction to real working life in Greenwich – away from the tourists.

There’s still time to celebrate It’s Time!... for Carnival This Saturday, our Summer Fair at General Gordon Square, Woolwich is back, but with a fiery twist. The virtual Woolwich Carnival will be bursting on to the Big Screen to bring you energetic dance routines, vibrant music and larger-than-life costumes. As we are unable to have the Woolwich Carnival event live this year, we have worked with volunteers, community groups and artists to bring you a one-hour spectacular show which will also be available to watch on our YouTube channel next week.

The Summer Fair in General Gordon Square continues the carnival theme this week with delicious street food, a variety of craft stalls and handmade local produce.

A packed programme of vibrant entertainment has brought the borough back to life again this August – all in a safe and socially distanced way of course! Our Royal Greenwich – It’s Time! festival, in partnership with Visit Greenwich, has already featured ballet shows in parks from Abbey Wood to Greenwich, special resident discounts at some of our worldclass tourist attractions, outdoor cinema events, summer fairs, interactive children’s musical shows and more.

We hope you’ve had a chance to get out and take advantage of the activities on your doorstep. But don’t worry if you haven’t just yet, September is also brimming with culture-rich events and celebrations for you to get involved in.

You may have already spotted the light installations and colourful ribbons hanging from a tree near you. This is all part of our Royal Greenwich Residents’ Rainbow. Eight locations across Royal Greenwich have been transformed by technicolored light installations, community arts pieces and ribbons sharing residents’ messages hung on wishing trees.

Residents have been sending in messages of thanks or wishes for the future which you can now see displayed on the wishing trees. Locations of each of the tress are listed below.

Each area has been lit and decorated in ribbons from one single colour, but this weekend, the colours and lights will be exchanged between areas, making each part of the borough a rainbow of gratitude from across communities.

Look out for the spectacular laser light display that will be seen across the borough on Saturday 26 September. More information will be available nearer the time at royalgreenwich.gov.uk/rainbow.

Comedy festival goes al fresco The Greenwich Comedy Festival is swapping the Big Top tent for an open-air spectacle at the stunning National Maritime Museum, Royal Museums Greenwich this year. From 23 to 27 September, the specifically redesigned event will present some of the absolute best in stand-up comedy in a safe, enjoyable and socially distanced environment.

Some of the big names you have the chance to see at this year’s comedy festival, part of Royal Greenwich – It’s Time!, include Bill Bailey, Josh Widdicombe, Sara Pascoe, Nish Kumar and Aisling Bea. Tickets will be sold in pairs with audiences seated on chairs in socially distanced plots. Seating is at least 1m apart with a one-way system in place throughout the site.
