Over the August bank holiday there will be some changes to your normal bin collections as they will be collected later than normal.

If your bins are normally emptied on a Friday, they will instead be emptied on Saturday 5 or Sunday 6 September and it is likely that only your green and black top bins will be emptied. This is because the staff who are collecting bins over the weekend are volunteering to work.

Severndroog Castle is staging an online festival, packed with music, talks, craft workshops, yoga and more. Spanning the week of August 29 – September 5, the festival features over 40 online performances plus a chance to explore all aspects of the castle, from its history to its magical location and the myths surrounding it. Tune in for art masterclasses, children’s storytelling, virtual walks, a quiz and lots more.

Al fresco yoga on Blackheath Stretch your muscles and restore your mind with an outdoor yoga class on Blackheath. Ideal for those who are keen to move their practice off Zoom and back into the real world, but who are not quite ready to re-enter a studio, Blackheath Yoga offers outdoor classes near the Hare and Billet Pond.

Live music and lazy summer vibes on Greenwich Peninsula In a summer that’s seen festivals of all shapes and sizes cancelled, it will come as a relief for many to know that you can still hear live music in the great outdoors. Head to The Tide on Greenwich Peninsula where you can pull up a deckchair and listen to a range of artists performing on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Previous acts to have performed include south-east London violin and guitar duo Jargo Jargo, and singer Charlotte Campbell. See the Woburn Treasures at the Queen’s House If you didn’t manage to see the newly arrived Woburn Treasures at the Queen’s House before lockdown, now’s your chance. The exhibition has reopened, meaning visitors can pore

over the works of Van Dyck, Reynolds, Gainsborough, Canaletto and more, in what is the first time in over 60 years that pieces from Woburn's private collection have been on public display in a national museum. Greenwich + Docklands International Festival: what’s on this weekend?

Pif-Paf: TOAST Part of GDIF’s aforementioned On Your Doorstep initiative, TOAST brings a raucous, communal celebration of food, music, stories, dance and fire to the streets near you. Expect storytelling musicians, flying pancakes, a roaming kitchen, culinary tales, and a chance to throw your own stories into the mix. TOAST is the creation of Pif-Paf, a theatre company specialising in presenting work in outdoor, nontraditional spaces. Bringing its creations virtually to your door, the company hopes to encourage singing, dancing, laughter and community spirit in the streets in which it pops up.

The Weavers of Woolwich

Typically boasting over 130 different spectacles, this year GDIF has been scaled back to just 25 productions, with a focus on bringing events closer to people’s homes. A new project, On Your Doorstep, will quite literally see street theatre brought to the doors of people across the borough, to prevent them having to use public transport to access the festival. Look out for travelling events featuring live performance, music and street arts.

A new piece of ‘prose-poetry’ by Booker Prize-winning novelist Bernardine Evaristo is being revealed in a temporary installation in Woolwich Town Centre. Called The Weavers of Woolwich, the poem is being inscribed into the paving of General Gordon Square in photo-luminescent powder by Dutch artist Gijs van Bon, where it will be accompanied by a soundscape by Roma Yagnik. Conceived as an ‘epic people’s history’, the piece celebrates the spirit and resilience of the diverse communities who have made Woolwich their home.

Ray Lee: Chorus After hosting the quirky Pasture with Cows installation at the 2019 festival, the Old Royal Naval College is this year home to Chorus, a towering installation of sound and light sculptures by award-winning sound artist and composer Ray Lee. Here, giant metal tripods emblazoned with red LED lights rotate to generate whirling orbits of colour and sound, delivering an uplifting, captivating and immersive sonic spectacle. With Chorus, Ray hopes to create a strange and beautiful world of sound and movement, engaging diverse, new audiences with contemporary music.

Woolwich Works:

the exciting, largescale arts venue opening in the Royal Arsenal

Lewisham is officially the London Borough of Culture in 2021, but it’s in neighbouring Greenwich that an exciting new arts venue is opening. Following a year that’s seen culture grind to a halt in London, 2021 is set to see Woolwich Works, a large-scale concert venue with additional rehearsal and studio spaces, open in Woolwich. The site, which occupies a collection of former industrial buildings adjacent to the Royal Arsenal Pier, has undergone a 31 million-pound restoration led by the Royal Borough of Greenwich. The hope is for the new venue to become a go-to for live music, theatre, dance and art exhibitions. What’s more, the organisations taking up residence there have pledged to run workshops and create jobs for the local community, writes Holly O’Mahony…

When it opens in spring 2021, Woolwich Works will be able to accommodate 1,200 seated guests (1,800 standing), but perhaps the most exciting thing about the venue is the organisations taking up residence there. The National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), immersive theatre company Punchdrunk, BAME orchestra Chineke!, Luca Silvestrini’s dance company Protein and the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair will all call Woolwich Works their home.

Punchdrunk, whose former work has been known to span entire factories, will have their own building within the site, while the other organisations will have their own office spaces but share rehearsal and performance space.

Plans to renovate the Grade II and II* buildings – which date back to the 1500s and have previously housed a Tudor mansion, a firework factory, a theatre and the Royal Artillery Band – have been in the pipeline for some time. Approved back in 2018, the 15,000m² site was due to open as Woolwich Works in 2020, but all plans were put on hold when the coronavirus outbreak happened.

But, we’ve done a lot of contingency planning and will continue to do so,” he says. “We are fortunate in that we have a large, flexible space which gives us more room for manoeuvre than a closely-seated, traditional auditorium – and we’ve been able to develop layouts that should enable it to still work well for smaller audiences with social distancing arrangements in place.”

“Punchdrunk were one of a number of companies involved in very early discussions with the Council when it was first looking to develop the site, and those discussions over time evolved into realising there was an opportunity to do something really special in Woolwich, with Punchdrunk becoming the first resident artistic company,” he says.

Another exciting name moving into the venue is the Chineke! Orchestra.

Founded in 2015 by double bass player Chi-chi Nwanoku OBE, Chineke! have grown exponentially since then, and are now looking to make the site their first permanent home. “That combined with their focus on celebrating diversity, and championing BAME musicians and composers, made us feel that there was the potential to build something

As for what each of the resident organisations will stage for their opening programme, all details are firmly under wraps for now. “We’re hard at work behind the scenes talking with artists, musicians, organisations, companies and promoters, and hope to share more later in the year,” says James.

In addition to using Woolwich Works as a base and a space to perform, the organisations taking up residence have pledged to run workshops with the local community, while the venue itself should create opportunities for paid work.

“Woolwich Works was founded to benefit and contribute to our local community – and they’re at the heart of everything we do,” says James. “We’re still very much at the start of the journey of developing what will be on offer when we open in spring next year, but we have an ambition to offer a varied programme that includes both artistic and non-artistic events, and things to both see and do, like creative projects and classes. We know our resident artistic companies will be working with schools and community groups, and that there will be ensembles run on site that people can join,” he reveals.

“We’ll obviously have a number of paid jobs on offer as we get closer to opening – full time, part-time and event-based, and all paying at least the London Living Wage. We’ll also run a volunteer programme, offer a lot of work experience placements and hopefully a number of apprenticeships – all underpinned by a commitment to supporting people’s progression into work in the creative industries.”

The buildings will also be open to the public to wander around and use as a meeting space during the day. An all-day café-bar will be open to visitors day and night, and, if you’re lucky, you might even encounter some free music or spoken word performances.

Luca Silvestrini’s Protein were already based in Woolwich, but James is thrilled to have the dance company moving into the site. “They’ve already got a really strong track record of working in the borough; many people will have enjoyed – or taken part in – (In)visible Dancing, which was performed on the streets of Woolwich as a run-up to opening Woolwich Works in summer last year,” he says. “They also run some brilliant community projects,

and of course produce beautiful professional work – something they’ve managed to keep-up digitally during lockdown, which speaks of their dedication and creativity,” he adds.

“We’re committed to being a multi-arts site because we think that some of Woolwich Works’ greatest potential lies in being a catalyst for collaboration, so it’s important that we have a resident dance company – and to have one that’s so embedded in the community is something we’re really proud of.”

Since launching in 2016, Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair has seen the eagle-eyed art crowd flock from all over London (and further afield) to browse its collection of original and limited edition prints, created by hundreds of different

artists. As of next year, Woolwich Works will be the new home of the annual art fair, which usually takes place in November.

The final (announced) piece to the puzzle is the NYJO, who James hopes will make Woolwich Works relevant to a younger audience. The team approached the orchestra about moving to the site, and by chance, found they were looking for a new home.

While the wheels are in motion to open Woolwich Works next spring, all might be put on hold again if a second wave of the coronavirus hits. “For the live entertainment and events industries, we’re not out of the first wave yet,” points out James, alluding to the fact most indoor theatres and concert spaces are yet to reopen. “We don’t yet know

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF), London’s leading festival of outdoor theatre and performing arts will be running from 28 August to 12 September 2020 in locations across Royal Greenwich and east London.

CACT to run FIT FANS sessions from September

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) will be running its FIT FANS sessions from Monday 14 September.

FIT FANS has helped thousands of people achieve long-term improvements in weight loss, physical activity and gives participants the opportunity to meet new people, make new friends and improve general well-being.

12pm on Thursday in the classroom at CACT’s office in New Eltham.

The FIT FANS programme was launched in January 2020 with the English Football League (EFL) Trust and aims to improve eating habits, increase activity levels and reduce weight and waistline.

Aimed at men and women aged 35-65 who are looking to lose weight and get fitter, the 12-week programme begins on Monday 14 September at two venues in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The programme allows like-minded people to get together each week and speak about their weight-loss journey and support one another.

History

The Cement Works at Morden Wharf Mary Mills One surprising industry to find in Greenwich was the Cement Works at Morden Wharf. Cement was of course a big thing further down river at Swanscombe and Northfleet – and further on at the Hoo Peninsula and on the Medway. Compared with some of these works the Greenwich works were quite small – but every bit as polluting.

And so – to the various cement works.

This can get a bit complicated as sites and companies changed and move! We can only guess at the source of chalk and stone as raw materials for these works although chalk was quarried for ballast nearby from pits in Charlton and Maze Hill.

For these small works a barge-load a day would have kept them going and could have come from anywhere near the Thames and the Estuary – for instance Ashby’s stone was said to come from Brightlingsea.

Winkfield, Reid and Bell made ‘Roman cement’ from 1852 on land leased from Charles Holcombe. They later became the East Greenwich Portland Cement Company and around 1870 it was taken over by William Ashby and Son. This is not cementing ‘like the Romans used’ but a process patented in 1796 using ground up nodules found in clay and copied by others, sometimes accurately... Later, under Ashby, Portland Cement was made here, maybe as early as 1852’. Portland cement is the common type of cement which we all know and recognise. It was developed in England – Leeds - in the late 19th century

heating limestone and clay minerals in a kiln to form ‘clinker’ which is then ground.

Ashbys were based in Staines and had originally been a river haulage company.

They were a Quaker family with brewing and banking interests who dominated Staines in the 19th century. George Crowley Ashby who later took over the works and was based in Isleworth – he was Treasurer of the Isleworth Regatta. He was said to be very fat. The family also had a warehouse in Upper Thames Street, ‘City of London. Ashby appear to have taken over a number of small cement works in the late 19th century and it is possible that they had another site at Greenwich Wharf – today’s Riverside Gardens.

This was a John Ashby described as an ‘ice merchant’, and a John Ashby was a leading member of the Staines family in this period. He built an ice well on the Lovell’s site but it was sadly demolished with no recognition of its existence by the developers’ archaeologists.

The first Ashby Portland cement plant here in Greenwich was a wet process, with a sixth of the site area used for slurry. There

were 10 kilns - five of them small bottle kilns – but later it was converted to the chamber kiln system. There is a preserved ‘bottle’ kiln at Grove Road in Northfleet – which is sadly, more or less impossible to see and it is hidden among buildings. There was no storage space at all, no rail link – everything left the site by barge.

The site continued in use by Ashby’s for transport work until the Great War but eventually it was taken over by Molassine and eventually became part of the Amylum sugar refinery.

A larger cement works was adjacent and south of Ashbys. It was owned by Jabez Hollick who leased it from Charles Holcombe and it included the Sea Witch Pub and its gardens and land on both

sides of Sea Witch Lane. This included the river frontage which was known here as Hollick’s Wharf. They made Portland cement and there was a loading dock on the river front from where all the cement produced was shipped by barge. There was also a sail maker’s shop, a ‘bone’ store and a ‘snowcrete house’- perhaps a storehouse or a demonstration building.

These 19th century industries produced dust and nuisance. As a child growing up in Gravesend I well remember how the cement dust got everywhere – my mother would wash net curtains every couple of weeks. Swanscombe itself always looked like it has been in a particularly dirty snowfall roofs, walls and every possible ledge were covered in white dust. To get to Swanscombe you had to travel through a moon landscape of dust and vast pits on roads which were effectively causeways. However, there was always some satisfaction of showing it all to Northerners who thought they had a monopoly of industrial horrors and that Kent was the ‘garden of England’. (next place to go – perhaps the Sheerness steel works and rolling mills, or even the Kent coal field).

In 1852 Hollick had opened a cement works at Borstal Court– Borstal is a village in the hills above Chatham, near what is now the M2. He lived locally in Maze Hill and then in Coleraine Road.

At his Greenwich works in 1866 Hollick converted his five bottle kilns to Portland cement production. In 1895 the slurry backs were extended - at Bevan’s Northfleet Works the slurry backs’ were brick channels where the slurry was allowed to settle – and there may have been a similar arrangement here. A further three kilns were added during that period when the plant was producing 70 tons a week. In 1898 fire destroyed the mill building and work stopped. Soon after Hollick’s went into liquidation.

In 1900 Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (APCM) –better known as Blue Circle - was set up to take over several cement companies on the Thames and Medway, including Hollicks. The existing buildings were pulled down and new plant installed. Part of the wharf and foreshore were let to the adjacent soap works and remained in use for barges until the 1970s: The rest of the site became part of the soap works, and now lies under what was the Amylum sugar refinery.

In addition to cement Morden Wharf was a site for the manufacture of artificial stone – and there were more works for this further down river. At Morden Wharf the earliest of these was William Buckwell whose site was part of the ‘Crown Lands’ and later owned by the Enderbys and then leased to Morden College. Buckwell already had an ‘ArtificialGranite Works in Battersea and was here in Greenwich from 1857. Artificial stone was to become an important industry

by other firms on the Peninsula but probably not in Buckwell’s case. He built a brickworks on Morden Wharf but in 1862, he was subject to a long and detailed prosecution It turned out he had jumped bail having turned, unsuccessfully, to railway building in Italy. It is beyond the remit of this article to describe subsequent events - as for instance when he was held by police from four nations on the Swiss Italian border where they were unable to follow the protocol on who should actually arrest him because six feet of snow meant they couldn’t establish exactly where the border was. At Greenwich his site is subsequently described on maps as ‘Old Concrete Works’.

Sir John Scott Lillie was a retired army officer who owned land in Fulham and began development there from 1826 – hence a number of ‘Lillie’ names in the area. He was also prolific inventor and held a number of patents, including one, taken out in 1851, for road coverings.

His Greenwich ‘composition works’ was probably set up in connection with this. ‘Composition’ was a vague term for various substances stuck together, usually by coal tar, and sold as a cheap covering for buildings, roads, or whaever.

In 1858 Lillie signed an agreement with Willis and Wright (more of them in a later article) which must mean he had a site at Bay Wharf and in 1859 he built a jetty there. His works is described as a ‘factory for the manufacture of composition’ with a wharf and jetty. dwelling house, steam engine and chimney shaft. This factory appears in records in the early 1860s but Sir John died in 1868 and the fate of his works is not known.

Any person may object to the making of the permanent Order for the purpose of such indefinite continuation, within a period of six months beginning with the date on which the experimental Order comes into force or, if the Order is varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of the 1984 Act, beginning with the date on which the variation or modification or the latest variation or modification comes into force. ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Charlton Church Lane] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out Water main works.

2. The Order will come into operation on 1st September 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take a week. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Charlton Church Lane outside number 123.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Charlton Road, Victoria Way, Wellington Gardens and vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
