Initially lit and decorated in one single colour of the rainbow, each area will feature wishes and thank yous from residents nearby.

The month-long celebrations will culminate in a spectacular laser light display that will be seen by residents far and wide on Saturday 26 September.

Take 3 Action Academy, a Greenwich-based company offering screen combat classes for those looking to get into ‘special action performance’ work in film and TV, is offering weekly training classes on Blackheath Common. The company has two strands: an academy training performers to fight for camera and helping them step into the world of action, and an agency, which works with production companies to provide them with skilled professional actors, fighters, gymnasts, dancers and circus performers. A growing name in the business, Take 3 Action Academy’s pupils have gone on to work on major titles, from Killing Eve and Pennyworth to Saturday Night Takeaway and the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Take 3 was founded in 2018 by Tyler Kennington who, having spent years working in theatre, film and TV, spotted a gap in the market for performers with the talents to fill the middle ground between being an extra and a stunt performer. “We call them SPACTS: Special Action Performers,” he explains. “All you have to do is watch the Lord of the Rings, King Arthur and Cursed to get an idea.”

While working with his stunt coordinator father Paul Kennington, Tyler became aware of agencies sending extras into productions without properly vetting their skillset. “This puts the individual and performers around them at risk when being asked to perform certain skills. For example, a big battle scene requires skilled performers acting out a

fight sequence, whilst safely using weapons,” he says.

In contrast, performers on the books with Take 3 have been through rigorous training. “Each performer is put through a twostage assessment. The first being a physical audition, where they are assessed on their acting ability, pick-up skills, teamwork, fighting ability and any idividual skills they have,” explainsTyler. “The second being a one-to-one interview with us. This means we have done half the work for the productions when it comes to casting talent, saving both time and money.”

But that’s just the agency.

Take 3’s academy is open to anyone – from those looking to learn a new skill and meet new people to those keen to build

their strength. “We have many different types of people with different backgrounds that join our training sessions – from actors to stunt trainees and those that just want to try something new,” Tyler affirms. “We have those that have been injured in the past and come to regain mobility and confidence in their movements, and those just wanting to live their childhood dream!”

With his training school, Tyler was also keen to revolutionise the old-fashioned approach to stage and screen combat he’d

come across in the past. “We wanted to modernise stage combat, to create a space where performers from around the world could come and train, learn new skills and let their inner gladiator come alive,” he grins.

Of course, both the academy and agency strands of Take 3 were disrupted by Covid-19 and the subsequent lockdown. However, Tyler is positive that the school’s new al fresco home on Blackheath is the safest way forward. “Holding our class outdoors has been more Continues on page 5

Trial to reduce traffic in West Greenwich Trial measures to reduce traffic in West Greenwich have been implemented to address serious road safety concerns, and residents can give their feedback from 3 September.

Residents living to the west of Greenwich Park, have raised concerns about excessive traffic and dangerous driving in the area in recent years.

Narrow residential streets that were not designed to accommodate current high volumes of traffic, and incidences of vehicles being driven on footpaths have compelled the Council to take action.

In 2018, we consulted on proposals to reduce traffic on Burney Street, but feedback we received told us that an area-wide approach to traffic reduction was needed. Late last year we asked the public for their views on two potential ways to reduce traffic in West Greenwich.

Based on the feedback we received and the potential impact on travel

because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have amended our proposals which have been implemented on a trial basis.

The trial measures will: • enable safe walking and cycling for people of all ages by reducing traffic and reliance on private cars • address safety issues caused by large volumes of vehicles using the narrow streets in the area • support public health, improve local air quality, and reduce noise pollution • maintain servicing access to the businesses on Royal Hill.

The trial uses an Experimental Traffic Order, which means public consultation happens once the trial is in place. This allows people to provide feedback based on their actual experiences of the changes. You will be able to provide feedback on the proposals from 3 September on the Royal Greenwich website.

Plans brought forward for major new cycleway Plans to overhaul one of southeast London's most dangerous roads and make neighbourhoods between Greenwich and Woolwich much safer for people walking and cycling, will be brought forward as part of the Streetspace for London plan.

TfL will be speeding up work to extend Cycleway 4 in the borough this summer, starting with temporary changes. First stage ‘enabling’ work will begin this week with the main work to start in early September.

The first stage of the extension will be just over a mile long and will run along Old Woolwich Road and Trafalgar Road (A206) and include improvements to the Angerstein roundabout, an intimidating location where two people cycling have been killed in recent years. There will be a new fully segregated cycleway through the simplified junction, with new signals to help people walking and cycling navigate the junction safely and easily.

The extension of Cycleway 4 will be a 5km two-way segregated cycle route connecting the Tower Bridge to Greenwich section of the route to Woolwich, creating a safer route into the city for borough residents.

Making it easier for people in the area to walk, cycle and use public transport is vital to the capital’s recovery from coronavirus.

A quiet cycle route and more space for eating al fresco Work has begun to create the 2km quiet cycle route between Plumstead and Abbey Wood using modal filters, and we’ve used them in Pound Place, Eltham so that businesses can serve more customers outside safely.

For the cycle route, the planters have been installed on Gallosson Rd, SE18 and Blithdale Rd, SE2.

Modal filters create a low traffic environment by restricting access to through-traffic but allowing walking and cycling on individual streets or areas, and planters or bollards are often used to block traffic from entering. These roads are still accessible by car, but through-traffic in residential areas is reduced.

“Social distancing is much harder inside a studio, which is why outside on Blackheath we have all the space we need to train while keeping socially distanced and safe.”

But there’s another advantage to having his pupils practice outdoors. “When it comes to big battle scenes in films, they are always filmed on location or outside, so this gives us a perfect opportunity to prepare and train in a realistic environment,” Tyler explains.

Classes you can currently enroll in with Take 3 are titled simply ‘Medieval’, ‘Viking’, ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Martial Arts’. This, Tyler explains, is in anticipation of the films likely to be made in the near future, and the school’s way of arming pupils with the necessary combat techniques to earn on-screen roles. “We always try and stay ahead of the game, and host appropriate training sessions inline with upcoming productions,” he says. “For instance, we are currently working on a particular production which is very battle heavy, hence us doing classes in Medieval and Gladiator combat.”

Sometimes, a representative from Take 3 will accompany a pupil onto set to continue working with them there, but often the work is handed over to the production’s stunt department. Tyler is also convinced the demands the industry are placing on performers has increased in recent years. “The industry is ever changing and productions are demanding a higher degree

of proficiency from performers every day,” he says. “It's no longer enough to just be trained in one style of combat. We help develop and train individuals, so that their skill set separates them from the crowd.”

Between all the throwing one another to the ground, the leaps of faith and dueling with weapons, have there been any gnarly moments in Tyler’s training sessions? “We have never had any bad accidents while training. It's our job as a company to make sure everyone attending our classes is kept safe,” he says. “We always train with weapons that are made of polypropylene plastic, which is virtually unbreakable and designed to be the same weight, size and balance of a live blade. This means we can train realistically without putting anyone in danger,” he reveals.

So, should you give stage and combat classes a go? “We are here to modernise stage combat and hope to inspire many people to join in this amazing activity,” says Tyler, persuasively. “This isn’t just intense training but a great experience for anyone interested. Our vision is to teach every student the skills to become the best performer possible and help open doors for them within the film and television industries that may not have been open before.”

Greenwich Peninsula gets a six-week dose of mindfulness Ushna Mughal

In a bid to unite its isolated citizens, the community team in charge of Greenwich Peninsula have launched a six-week community wellness festival, Thrive, to bring people back together. Running from August 10 until September 20, this is the second iteration of the festival, following a fully online version held in May. With its mix of family yoga, pilates, HIIT classes and live cooking demonstrations, Thrive may well be the community festival we all need this summer. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Greenwich Peninsula’s community engagement lead Ushna Mughal to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: How did the idea for Thrive Wellness Festival come about?

Ushna Mughal: Thrive was born out of a desire to bring together our community here at Greenwich Peninsula at a time when we must still keep a physical distance. The aim of the festival is to support the health and wellbeing of our residents on the peninsula as part of our ongoing commitment to create events and programmes that enable them to live healthier lives.

HOM: Unlike many other wellness festivals which are compressed into a single day or weekend, you're rolling out the festival over six weeks. How come?

UM: We wanted to do something which would offer long-term support and wellbeing to our residents, and running the festival over a longer period of time helps us achieve this.

We’re also aware that there are a lot of people who feel anxious now the lockdown has been eased and we wanted to find a way of supporting them with this. Thrive is about much more than fitness; it’s a holistic approach to wellbeing that involves both physical activities, such as HIIT and yoga, and also community sessions such as urban gardening demonstrations and cookalongs.

HOM: The programme features the likes of outdoor yoga, pilates and mindfulness. Are there any highlights you're particularly excited about?

UM: The most exciting thing about Thrive is that it is an initiative created here on the peninsula by one of our residents. The Hour [the organisation co-running the festival with Greenwich Peninsula] is a local business founded by Jazz Sandhu, who has made her home on Greenwich Peninsula.

Jazz has engaged with selfemployed trainers and coaches to deliver the programme, creating local employment and skills development opportunities. We’re

delighted that the festival not only enables the community to enjoy our outdoor spaces – from The Tide to Central Park – but that it is also for all the family.

HOM: There are between 10 and 15 events taking place each week. What's the split between online and in-person events?

UM: As things begin to ease, we’ve transformed the original, virtual concept of Thrive into a hybrid of on and offline experiences, as both remain important to us and our residents. There is roughly a 50-50 split between outdoor classes – in activities like yoga – held in spaces around Greenwich Peninsula, and digital classes such as morning mindfulness where you can tune in from the comfort of your own home. We’ve planned it this way as we know it’s important to our residents that they are able to enjoy the green spaces of the peninsula again, while also having the option to tune in from home. We can’t wait to bring people back to the peninsula safely and hope that after an invigorating outdoor session at Thrive, the community will be able to come together while remaining at a safe distance from one another.

HOM: Are the online and in-person sessions completely separate? Or are people able to join the same yoga classes, for example, via Zoom or in person in the park?

UM: We’re keeping the online and in-person events separate, but residents and NHS workers will be able to attend or tune in to as many classes as they wish throughout the festival.

HOM: In addition to the festival, Greenwich Peninsula is running twice weekly community gardening sessions. What format do these sessions take and how can people get involved?

UM: The gardening sessions are held on the Jetty and are designed for visitors and residents to get www.weekender.co.uk

arts & entertainment involved with our riverside gardening community. Every week, volunteers come along to care for the plants and grow fruits and vegetables. The idea behind it is to foster community spirit and encourage people to enjoy the therapeutic benefits of growing food and flowers. The setting is peaceful with seven polytunnels on a pier in the Thames where a vast range of plants are grown. We’re delighted that the sessions are restarting this month, but spaces will be limited to facilitate social distancing, as safety is of course our top priority at the moment.

HOM: Finally, what do you hope Thrive Wellness Festival offers the local community?

UM: We hope to continue to lift the spirits of those who get involved with the festival and give them a slightly different experience to that of a traditional wellness festival.

Our work is built on the principles of creativity and community, and we hope that our residents will feel a stronger bond as a result of taking part. As for NHS workers joining us from further afield, we hope they can feel part of our community even from afar.

Food Sticks ‘n’ Sushi Serving up quality, sustainable sushi in a hip, Scandi setting, Sticks ‘n’ Sushi is a step away from other Japanese restaurants (despite being part of a small chain). The restaurant group originated in Copenhagen over 20 years ago, and is the love child of brothers Jens and Kim Rahbek, and Thor Andersen, who took inspiration from their half-Japanese, half-Danish background to create a concept that fuses the two culinary traditions. Family Shoot for the stars While its planetarium remains closed, Greenwich’s Royal Observatory is hosting a series of Solar System Discovery virtual shows, which can be enjoyed from home. Calling all brave knights and explorers: a special summer quest awaits you in the grounds of the historic Eltham Palace and Gardens. On arrival, you will be given a map detailing your mission. As you travel around the site, you’ll be expected to crack clues, solve anagrams and puzzles, and spot the likes of geese and magpies along the way. After months of closure, the enduringly popular Zippos Circus is back up and running, beginning its all-new tour of Rebound! in Blackheath. CACT’s Post-16 Football & Education Academy to welcome four new cohorts

Charlton Athletic Community Trust’s (CACT’s) Post-16 Football & Education Academy will be welcoming four new cohorts of participants in September 2020.

Football & Sports Development, said:

On Friday 7 August CACT held an induction day for the new cohorts to learn more about the programme.

“Initially recruitment shows at least 60 new male and female students will be joining the programme based at the Charlton Athletic Training Ground in New Eltham.

CACT’s Post-16 Football & Education Academy is aimed at males and females aged 16-19 who are interested in combining their education with football.

The programme is delivered in partnership with SCL Education, who deliver the educational side of the academy.

Players train three times a week as part of the programme while also studying for a Level 2 or 3 in Sport, as well as completing an FA Level 1 coaching qualification.

Subject to government guidelines, students will return in September and the Post-16 season is set to kick-off on 16 September.

The rise of the Greenwich cable industry

Mary Mills Our walk along the Greenwich riverside has now reached Morden Wharf. This runs from the Enderby Wharf boundary as far as the inlet which is Bay Wharf. It was, and is, a large and complicated area owed by Morden College and over the past two hundred years it has had many different industrial leaseholders. In the previous article I wrote about Charles Holcombe who was originally a partner in an early tar distillery here and then became head leaseholder for much of the site. A lot went on here and will take up more than one of these articles.

First of all we need to back track a bit. Back at Enderby Wharf I wrote about the cable works there, and how they made and laid the Atlantic cable. However I had to start half way through the story of the cable companies and their work because it began here at Morden Wharf. I’m sorry if I am telling this story backwards but it is either that or doing our imaginary walk backwards. I’m not sure which is worse! Anyway – how did the Greenwich cable industry start?

In 1842 Heimann and Johann Küper established a wire rope factory on the Grand Surrey Canal in Camberwell.

By 1848 they were bankrupt and the work was taken over by George Elliott who had risen from a pitboy to become a mining engineer in the Durham coalfield. Later he was Sir George Elliot, MP and ‘exceedingly wealthy’. Under Elliott, W. Küper and Company expanded from just being the - “Original patentees of the Untwisted Iron Rope” – to a firm making iron ropes for collieries and ships rigging.

They moved to Morden Wharf in 1851 with a lease from Charles Holcombe.

The earliest telegraph cables were not made in Greenwich but in Wapping and Gateshead – but the firms involved became involved in legal action over patent rights and some of the manufacture was subcontracted to Küper and Co. In 1852, Richard Atwood Glass, who was George Elliot’s chief accountant, began to look at the opportunities for using the company’s wire armouring for underwater cable. As a result Küper secured contracts for a Sweden-toDenmark cable. In 1854, Elliot took Glass into partnership and W Küper and Co became Glass, Elliot and Company.

Meanwhile, in Islington the Gutta Percha Company was set up in 1845. Initially they made a variety of products from gutta percha, a recently introduced natural product which unlike other rubbers is thermoplastic and can be moulded. It proved to be an ideal insulator for underwater cables and

was used by the cable-makers from 1848 and soon had a near monopoly.

The company was fronted by Charles Hancock – one of the amazing Hancock brothers. The brothers and their key roles in a range of inventions and technological developments perhaps best illustrates the way in which there are so many connections between individuals in the story of the rise of industries in east and south east London. For instance – we have already at Enderby Wharf heard about Beale, and one of his many ideas was about was steam cars. Later we will hear about Frank Hills, also a steam car man, as well as a chemist – and over in West Ham was Walter Hancock whose steam cars actually ran a service. Thomas Hancock, another brother, found a way of making rubber usable - and worked with Beale. It was a relatively small world but it moved ideas on technology forward dramatically.

to lay a cable across the Atlantic. The Morden Wharf site was too small for the amount of cable which they needed to make and Glass Elliot agreed to buy the derelict Enderby Hemp and Rope works slightly up river from Morden Wharf.

In 1864 they merged with the Gutta Percha Company, to form The Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company – usually shortened to Telcon. The made the first successful Atlantic telegraph cables system in 1866, part of which was probably made at Morden Wharf.

There is nothing to remind us now at Morden Wharf of its short life in use

by Telcon – and, as far as gutta percha is concerned, people may remember a building at Enderby Wharf decorated with a dado of gutta percha leaves – sadly demolished in 2010 by Barratts.

So – what else went on at Morden Wharf? There were several important firms. But I will start with a small short lived company that few people will have heard of. They were small –but they too had connections.

down river of the telegraph works at Morden Wharf. This was opened by Peter Soames and John Campbell Evans. Soames was one of the Greenwich family who will be the subject of a future article. They owned a major soap factory at Morden Wharf as well as being involved in local politics and the local church.

Peter was a son of the soap works owner but his career was very different.

As a mechanical engineer he became a specialist in machinery for the sugar industry and in 1855 he set up Morden Iron Works along with John Campbell Evans for ‘the design and construction of steam-engines, sugar machinery, and mill work.. Improvements in sugar-cane mills and in sugar- boiling and treating apparatus”. As we will see – and I am sure completely coincidentally – the Soames soap works was succeeded by what many people locally will have known as Tunnel Glucose- fundamentally a sugar works..

John Campbell Evans had worked in railway engineering and Evans and Soames both held several patents.

At Morden Iron Works they seem to

have made steam cranes and related equipment, but both were also involved with devices for use in the manufacture of telegraph cables. This was of course a neighbouring major industry None of this lasted very long, and the partnership was dissolved in 1861 – although there is a record of an unsuccessful tender for locomotives for the Ffestinog Railway in 1863.

It must be assumed that the works closed down after that. Subsequently Peter Soames went to Siam to erect a sugar manufactory and later published a book on the subject.

Last week I wrote about the Council depot in Tunnel Avenue. As we reach the border between Enderby and Morden Wharves we are at the point where the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich dustcart road from their Tunnel Avenue depot reached their jetty on a line of arches. Their old jetty is the ‘e’ shaped one now disused on the riverside and it is where theborugh’s rubbish was tipped into barges. Perhaps a good place to start looking at the intricacies’ of Morden Wharf and its history.
