It was the perfect weather last weekend for the open-air film screenings on stunning grounds of a World Heritage Site the Old Royal Navy College that kicked off our It’s Time events.

A series of performances of the magical ballet Alice in Wonderland by Let’s All Dance made their Royal Greenwich debut in East Greenwich Pleasaunce and Abbey Wood Park, with more performances scheduled this week in other parks across the borough.

Let’s All Dance is one of the first companies to start touring following the easing of lockdown. Owner and founder of Let’s All Dance Orit Sutton said: “The past few months have been extremely difficult for the entire country.

That’s why we’re thrilled to be able to perform again and offer beautiful but safe entertainment for the whole family. If it can bring some enjoyment to families in London and give them a reason to spend safe time with loved ones, we’ve done our job.”

As with all the events part of It’s Time, every measure has been taken to ensure social distancing is observed, adhering to all government guidelines and ensuring the audience, dancers, crew and front of house staff are as safe as possible.

Capital Art Gallery is one of many businesses taking part in Royal Greenwich – It’s Time and is giving you the chance to have your art displayed in a gallery. Entry is free to the competition and everyone can take part, from budding artists to professionals, but there’s just one catch – you only have one day to create your masterpiece!

Karl Sproat, Owner of Capital Art Gallery, said: “The most important thing about the competition is to have fun. It’s open to everyone, young or old, whether you’ve been painting for years or it’s your first time. I love seeing all the different pictures and the enjoyment people get from taking part and joining in the It’s Time festival is another way for the community to come together to support and encourage each other. Everyone should give it a go!”

The competition will take place on Saturday 26 September and participants must attend the gallery between 9am and 11am to register.

Completed artwork should be returned to Capital Art Gallery no later than 8pm that same day and all artwork produced will be exhibited in the Gallery from 27 to 30 September for all to view.

Totally Thames: London’s riverside festival returns The annual Totally Thames festival returns this September, offering a mix of digital and physical events to celebrate one of London’s greatest and enduring assets: its river.

The month-long festival runs as usual from September 1 – 30, with activities to enjoy in Greenwich and beyond.

Guided walks, art installations, storytelling and live musical performances are all part of this year’s programme, along with an all-new roster of ‘digital exclusives’, which can be enjoyed via the Totally Thames website from home. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Totally Thames founder and director Adrian Evans to find out more…

A 50:50 split of online and ‘in the flesh’ events might not be the festival he imagined creating for 2020, but Adrian is looking on the bright side. “The digital aspects of the festival mean people can join from anywhere, and it opens up the festival to those who can’t get out right now. The digital reach means you can enjoy the works in your own time and space,” he says.

While there’s no theme to Totally Thames (beyond it being a celebration of the river), in a year that’s been dominated by the coronavirus outbreak, Adrian hopes the festival – which takes place

almost exclusively outdoors – will entice people to head out and enjoy culture in a safe environment. “The way we’ve tried to think of it is as the ‘Thames unlocked’, encouraging people to get out and experience the river, and reclaim it,” he says.

Ordinarily, Totally Thames would comprise 100 live events, but with many installations and performances unable to take place (due to lack of rehearsal time or not being able to meet social distancing requirements), the 2020 programme has been reduced 60 events, half of which are ‘digital exclusives’ with no live aspect.

“There’s very little by way of live performance,” acknowledges Adrian, for whom being unable to work with children’s choirs and community choirs around the country has been one of the biggest losses.

Another major event which has been postponed until 2021 is the festival’s latest heritage project which will focus on Silvertown in Newham and the industrial history there. And the ever-popular sporting events – The Great River Race and oldest rowing race in the world Doggett's Coat and Badge – have also been deferred.

Totally Thames came close to not happening at all in physical form.

Adrian and the artists involved had to plan for two different festivals: one that would be entirely digital and another – the one we’ve (fortunately) got – which will run with extensive social distancing in place.

While events are taking place along the entirety of the 42-mile stretch of the River Thames, several are happening close to home in Greenwich. The team behind London’s first dedicated public art walk The Line, which runs between the O2 in Greenwich and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, have created a new experience for the festival. “They have a new piece which is intended to be experienced as you cross the Emirates Air Line [the cable car link across the Thames],” reveals Adrian.

Those who want to learn more about the history of the river and its frequenters can tune into a digital event streamed daily from Cutty Sark for the entirety of the festival: Hidden Stories from London Docks is a chance to join Raj Fernandes in the virtual sphere and hear tales about life along the London docks in the 19th century.

As always, the aim of Totally Thames is to put the river front-of-mind through encouraging people to engage with installations, activities and performance pieces along its banks and on its waters. Will this be harder to achieve in a year that’s seen the coronavirus pandemic consume such a large percentage of our thoughts? “I think inevitably it’s going to be harder,” admits Adrian.

“People have been confined to their homes with young children, and there are seniors who still haven’t been able to leave their homes,” he says.

“What we’re here to do is supply a bit of joy in these dark Covid times. The festival is there and it’s all free. You can enjoy it from home or, if you’re up for it, it’s an enticement to get you back out again. Hopefully we’ll provide some special moments for people.”

Blackheath Halls is keeping the community spirit alive online While some London arts venues announced online programmes almost as soon as they closed their doors, Blackheath Halls held back, initially, but plenty was going on behind the scenes at the 600-seat concert hall. Last month, the team behind the venue launched an online programme of community activities, including creative coffee mornings and group singing sessions held over Zoom. Despite other venues are tentatively reopening, Blackheath Halls plans to keep things strictly online until September. Holly O’Mahony speaks to community engagement manager Rose Ballantyne to find out more…

The lockdown brought with it a lot of uncertainty for Blackheath Halls, as it did for many independentlyfunded arts venues. “We closed our doors on March 17 and were thrown into cancelling events, letting our audiences know about the closure and providing ticket refunds, as well as making applications for funding to help the organisation through these difficult times,” recalls Rose. Staff were furloughed in a bid to make savings while no money was coming in from ticket and bar sales. “It’s been very sad to see so many live performances cancelled, but we’ve received a huge amount of support and donations from audiences which have kept us feeling motivated and positive.”

In July, the slim team still working for the venue launched Coffee Corners and Singalong Lunchtimes – two initiatives funded by City Bridge Trust through the London Community Response Fund – offering people a space to engage in artistic activity in a friendly atmosphere. “No experience is necessary, and we hope to promote a much needed sense of community alongside the chance to try out fun music-making and arts activities,” says Rose.

Held on Wednesdays (at 11am, 2pm and 4pm), the hour-long Coffee Corners offer groups of up to 20 participants a space to get together on Zoom and take part in a different creative activity each week, led by a member of Blackheath Halls’ roster of freelance professional artists.

Sessions so far have included line drawing, singing, dancing and a quiz, and while already popular, Rose is hopeful the uptake will be even bigger in September once word of the initiative has spread.

“We hope to get some people involved who have not engaged with Blackheath Halls before,” she says.

Singalong Lunchtimes, meanwhile, take place on Fridays from 1pm to 1:30pm and 1:45pm to 2:15pm, and are a chance for people to down their tools for half an hour and sing along to everything from show tunes to folk songs and pop hits. The sessions are led by ex-Trinity Laban student Ashley Beauchamp, who Rose describes as “a really engaging and exciting young animateur”.

Why hold the sessions online at a time when arts venues are allowed to reopen? Rose points out that while the buildings themselves are allowed

to reopen, Public Health England guidance continues to prohibit group singing by non-professional music makers – meaning community choirs still can’t get together in person.

What’s more, the remote nature of the events means those who are still shielding from the virus or who have caring responsibilities can take part.

doors are closed is of the utmost importance. “We pride ourselves on being a valuable community hub,” she says. “It’s interesting that at a time of great uncertainty and fear for many, people have turned to creative activity, and we wanted to help facilitate this as best we could,” she adds.

Blackheath Halls usually stages a community opera in the summer, which last year saw them tackle La belle Hélène (pictured). While no such event can take place this year, the team behind the initiative are hoping to prepare a short film, A Journey Through the Rake’s Progress, instead. The film will feature contributions from the venue’s 70-strong community of singers and instrumentalists, plus guest appearances from professional opera singers and artwork from the youth company. “The final piece will give the audience an opportunity to learn about this wonderful opera by Stravinsky,” says Rose. “Watch this space – and the Blackheath Halls Youtube channel!”

“We also wanted to try to provide some work for artists and musicians, most of whom have seen their work dry up overnight. We have a vibrant and engaged ‘friends’ organisation run by [Labour party politician] Dame Joan Ruddock, who are also keen to provide solace and companionship for people at this challenging time.”

“We literally can’t wait to get our wonderful audiences and live performances back in the building,” she says. “This is absolutely at the heart of what we do, and however interesting and valuable our experience of online activity has proved to be, nothing can replace

the thrill and magic of live events.”

That said, the team must ensure they can afford to reopen the venue before attempting to welcome audiences back. “We are currently juggling our diaries and budgets which depend on many factors including artists’ touring plans and the financial viability of socially distanced events for us as a venue which does not receive any public subsidy,” Rose points out.

While hugely unsettling and disruptive, the lockdown has given Rose and the team at Blackheath Halls time to pause and think about the audience experience. “We hope to take something constructive from the things we have learned during this period of closure,” she muses. “If it makes us think more carefully about the needs of our audience, our environmental impact, and about those who are excluded from our day-to-day activity for reasons of disability or health, that can only be a positive result.”

Ve-gains: Ruby’s of London gets a bricks and mortar shop in Greenwich commissioned to make cakes for had been cancelled and she’d been forced to shut down her market stall. Fortunately, Ruby already had a strong online arm to her business, which she adapted to offer pick ‘n’ mix boxes of cakes to customers. “They proved really popular. You could add messages so people would send them to their loved ones,” she recalls.

When Ruby’s of London founder Ruby Amarteifio started trading in Greenwich Market in 2009, the concept of vegan cakes was still very much a novelty. Ten years on, the vegan movement has exploded onto the mainstream and now, most shops, cafés and restaurants offer some plant-based goods. The boom in demand has seen Ruby’s range of vegan cupcakes, brownies and doughnuts get snapped up by major wholesalers. But most thrillingly for the vegan baker, it’s allowed her to open up a bricks-and-mortar vegan bakery a stone’s throw from where her professional career began in Greenwich Market. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Ruby Amarteifio to find out more…

It was a dairy intolerance as a child that led Ruby to discover veganism.

“I was a kid in the 80s when there weren’t the options that there are now and it was difficult to find things,” she says. “I became a vegetarian when I was seven and vegan in my 20s.” She started baking for fun, experimenting with plant-based ingredients and learning to make the cakes she couldn’t find in shops. As her skills improved and her creations got more inventive, she realised she could bake for a living – and had a niche.

“I approached Greenwich Market who were really supportive – they’re quite forward thinking,” she recalls. “I started trading on a Wednesday and a couple of months later, they offered me the weekend.” At first, the stall just sold cupcakes. Then Ruby added doughnuts and brownies to the range and, as demand and trends shifted, she incorporated further free-from products into the business, including wheat-free, gluten-free and nut-free items, and a naturally-sweetened line.

Demand grew over the years and Ruby developed an online arm of the business. She started selling wedding and birthday cakes, as well as corporate packages, delivering these across the capital. “We’re looking to expand to nationwide delivery in the next couple of months,” she beams. Ruby also works with several wholesalers who take her products into new markets and has recently developed a vegan sweet range for healthy fast-food chain Leon.

Somewhat miraculously, Ruby exchanged on her new shop during lockdown. Like lots of small business owners who relied on a mixture of footfall and set commissions, the pandemic was particularly tough on Ruby. The weddings she’d been

“Lockdown made us regroup and think about the next step. Moving into a retail space has always been on the dream list,” says Ruby. Then the opportunity arose to buy a store on Durnford Street, around the corner from the market where it all began.

The timing wasn’t perfect, but Ruby felt confident enough to take the leap.

“It’s a really great space because we’re not tucked inside the market but we still feel like a part of it,” she says.

“For me, it was about development, being flexible and taking the opportunity in a really difficult time,” she says. Ruby opened the store on July 4, the first date restaurants, pubs and cafés with seating areas were allowed to reopen. As well as offering her successful range of plant-based sweet treats, Ruby hopes to expand the business to create a savoury range, featuring scones, tartlets, sausage rolls and salads. Currently, the store is open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, but by the autumn, Ruby hopes to open six days a week.

“The explosion of plant-based movement has been great for us,” says the baker, who has changed her recipes over the years as different ingredients have become available.

Though she insists the quality of the product always comes before bending to the latest fad. “Most of what we do is based on customer demand. Things go in and out of fashion; for a while, it was all about soya milk, now it’s about oat milk,” Ruby points out. “We change our ingredients while keeping the quality of our products number one. So if the new ingredient tastes as good or better than what we were using before, we’ll change it. If not, we won’t.”

Does she have a favourite product?

“I’m very fickle,” she chuckles. “We do a lot of seasonal products – Christmas pies and pumpkin cupcakes in autumn – and I always love our newest offerings, then the next month I move onto a new flavour.”

What seasonal products can customers find at Ruby’s this month?

“We currently have a banana and pineapple cake with passionfruit curd and icing. It’s a tropical explosion for the summer,” she grins.

Ruby is conscious the London she has opened up shop in is very different to the one she was running her stall in six months ago. “It’s a different city to the one it was and we have to get used to the ‘new normal’,” she says.

“There’s no tourism currently, but we’ve got a really loyal customer base and following in Greenwich; the community here has been fantastic from day one.

And we have people who travel to us from all over London,” she says. “A lot of our customers aren’t vegan and that’s a stamp of approval for us.”

As for what’s next, Ruby hopes to continue expanding, building, creating and innovating. “I’m in my dream job,” she beams. “The more time I can spend in the kitchen developing and creating, I’m happy. Ruby’s of London is my passion project – and it’s got my name on it. The shop is the icing on the cake.”

Montage Theatre Arts: the summer school for everyone

After four long months at home with the kids, the prospect of summer schools (and indeed regular school, from September) will be a welcome one for many parents and carers. Meanwhile for children, these fun-first courses will offer structured activities and a chance to socialise in groups outside the home – the first many will have enjoyed since the schools closed back in March. Not all can afford the luxury of sending their children to a summer school, though. Places often come with a hefty price tag. But Lewishambased performing arts charity Montage Theatre Arts does what it can to make placements accessible for all. Holly O’Mahony speaks to the charity’s general manager Emma Hobday to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Firstly, could you tell us a bit about yourself and your work with Montage Theatre Arts?

Emma Hobday: Montage Theatre Arts (MTA) has been operating in Lewisham and Greenwich since 1998 and I became General Manager in 2017. Before working for MTA, I ran a touring theatre company that specialised in classical theatre, and ran participatory workshops all over the country for children and young people.

I have always been fascinated by the transformative power of the performing arts, and a huge advocate for them in relation to young people. The performing arts can be used as a tool to transcend social barriers, build communities and allow children to learn vital life skills including confidence, communication and creative and independent thinking.

HOM: Tell us about this year's summer school. What sorts of courses are you running?

EH: Our summer holiday clubs are always performing arts based. They’re full of fun, play and learning, and are ordinarily geared towards the final performances in front of family and friends. This year, due to COVID-19, we’ve had to adapt our offering so we can make sure the health and wellbeing of our community remains our number

one priority. Instead of holding live performances, we’re recording the final rehearsals and encouraging children to go home and perform for family. Class sizes are limited to just 15 children, who work with their teachers and each other all week so as to make sure everyone stays as safe as possible.

All our courses this summer involve dance, drama and music. Singing is usually a part of the programme but due to current government guidelines [that prevent non-professional groups singing together], we’re avoiding this for now – but we’ve added lots of other fun activities to make up for this.

HOM: Your courses all have fun names relating to fictional worlds - Oz, Wonderland and Frozen among them.

Do these stories form a big part of the courses named after them?

EH: Our courses are always themed around child-friendly universes that combine familiar stories with musical theatre material that may be less familiar.

Our ‘Oz’ course for example obviously takes some inspiration from The Wizard of Oz, but we’ll also look at [musicals] The Wiz and Wicked during the week. It makes for some fantastic story-telling adventures and means children get to explore creatively around the theme.

HOM: Why are summer schools like yours so important right now, in a year that has taken many children out of the classroom, and away from a structured learning environment and friends?

EH: For some, coming to MTA this summer will be the first time they’ve been allowed to spend time with their peer group in a structured environment since March. We know from the families we work with that some children’s wellbeing has really suffered during lockdown. Our courses allow children crucial opportunities to socialise and a semblance of normality that they desperately need.

HOM: If the school had been unable to open in physical form due to lockdown measures continuing, would you have offered an online summer school instead?

EH: We were originally looking to run some courses online this summer.

However, with many people now suffering from ‘screen fatigue’, we decided it’s healthier and safer to try to run them

in person. We also considered offering some activities online, and some in-person classes in open-air public spaces but, as the guidance was updated by the Department of Education, we were overjoyed to find we could run our summer school out of our Lewisham base with additional safety measures in place. It also means that many children and families can now benefit from external childcare this summer.

HOM: You have a brilliant scheme whereby free bursary places are offered to children from disadvantaged backgrounds – an offer which this year has been extended to families affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Can you tell us a bit more about this?

EH: Financial or social need should never be a barrier to the creative arts.

MTH has been a registered charity since 2001, providing vital performing arts opportunities for children and young people, and promoting access for all. Due to receiving funding from incredible organisations including Arts Council England and the City Bridge

Trust, MTA is able to fund free spaces for families who may be struggling financially. We have extended the criteria to include a COVID-19 response, which allows us to support parents who may have recently found themselves furloughed or made redundant.

HOM: Lastly, what do you hope those who take part in one of your summer holiday courses take away from the experience?

EH: MTH operates on the principles of community, confidence and creativity. Children attending benefit from all three. We hope everyone leaves with happy memories of fun, laughter and an understanding that the wider world still turns, and a version of normalcy is possible.

Participants take part in various creative workshops as part of the Young Greenwich Summer Camp

Young people on the Young Greenwich Summer Camp have been praising the project since it started in the Royal Borough of Greenwich at the beginning of the summer holidays.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) teamed up with Charlton Athletic Football Club and the Royal Borough of Greenwich to deliver the targeted summer camp that gives vulnerable 8 to 16-yearolds from the Borough a week of educational and sporting activities.

More than 500 young people are due to take part in the week-long camps.

13-year-old Jess has been attending the summer camp and is pleased to be able to socialise with peers again.

CACT has launched a fundraising campaign to raise a final £10,000 towards the Sumer Camp programme, while Charlton Athletic goalkeeper Dillon Phillips has also shown his support for the campaign by raffling a pair of his goalkeeping gloves.

Along to Morden Wharf

Mary Mills Continuing along the riverside path, walking down river from Ballast Quay and Riverside Gardens, past Enderby Wharf, we are at Morden Wharf. Locals might remember that this is where three huge concrete silos stood until around 2010 – I’ll write about them later.. This is a complex site where there have been many, many different firms – I know someone who has identified over 20. Some of them, like Amylum and Molassine were well known – others more obscure. The constant changes have also meant that boundaries have often altered which complicates things a bit. The freeholder here is Morden College who, as with their other plots, leased it to a developer who in turn leased portions of it out to various businesses. Co-incidentally plans are now being worked up for development here and the site is now likely to be in the local news.

The story of this first developer on Morden Wharf is going to take us to New Cross, Southwark and Ilford – and end up at a bombed pub on the Greenwich riverside.

In 1841 Morden College granted a lease on a riverside site called ‘Further Pitts’ to Charles Holcombe. He had already taken over land which Morden College had previously leased to Bryan and Howden – and more about them later. Holcombe acted as the developer, as Coles Child had done, on what is now Riverside Gardens. He was the main leaseholder who then granted sub leases on parts of the site to a network of manufacturers.

Holcombe must have been at least middle aged by the time he invested in the Greenwich sites – it had previously been the tenant of Hatcham Manor Farm at New Cross. Hatcham is the old name for the area we now call New Cross and was owned by the Haberdashers Company. Hatcham Manor Farm was on the site of the fire station in Queens Road at New Cross. There are various complaints about Holombe’s land there being ‘very foul with thistles, and ditches full of rushes’ and there was a catgut factory ‘in the summer house.... offensive and disgusting’. He had a tenant some

distance away in Deptford on the site of the MacDonald’s burger bar at the junction of Trundley’s Road and Lower Road. This was Richard Torr with an ‘animal charcoal factory’ (better not to ask!).

Holombe actually lived somewhere rather grander - his address was Porchester Terrace in Bayswater.

He was one of a family who owned the Blackhorse Brewery in Southwark. This was of considerable size and dated back to at least the sixteenth century. It was at Maze Pond on the north side of Snows Fields in the Borough - roughly on the site of what is now Guy’s Hospital Cancer Centre. When Charles Holcombe inherited it he promptly sold it and in 1838 it was demolished. That same year he bought Valentines.

Valentines Park is in Ilford. It is a very grand house in a large and magnificent park now owned by the local Council and open to the public.

A road alongside Valentine’s House is named - ‘Holcombe Road’.

Strangely, the adjacent road is

‘Bethell Avenue’ - and this is unlikely to be a coincidence. Bethell also had a coal tar works on the Greenwich riverside – and we will get to him eventually. So these two Greenwich developers of coal tar products are remembered in Ilford road names.

When Holcombe leased his Greenwich sites he was clearly a rich man. Initially his role at Greenwich seems to have been as a backer and partner of one of the earliest firms to move onto the Peninsula – Byran and Howden.

John Bryan and Gidley Howden had leased a site at Morden Wharf from Morden College in 1837. They had a works on Bankside and wanted to expand. They were making apparatus for the manufacture of coal gas for lighting - one of several companies in the iron trade who were taking advantage of the rapidly expanding gas industry. The third partner in the business, and he one who provided the finance, was Charles Holcombe, John Bryan had been responsible for the building and setting up of a number of gas works throughout southern England – with varying degrees of financial success and some subsequent recriminations from local people. I am afraid he was only too typical of the firms who were offering to build gasworks. Of about 23 early gas companies in the old SEGAS area John Bryan is known to have been responsible for about

ten of them in the 1820s and 1830s.

He is known to have been involved at Maidstone and Sheppey and further afield he was responsible for gas works at Farnham and at Winchester and in particular he was associated with early gas works in coastal towns like Hastings and Worthing where they built a factory for distilling tar, comprising - a cooperage, a boiler house and rectifying plant, and a tar still. However such was the demand for gas for lighting that the business was expanding, hence their move to Greenwich In 1839, Morden College found that they were could not insure the site used by Bryan and Howden because of the ‘extremely hazardous business’ being carried out there.

In addition complaints were being made to Trustees about ‘oily matter running about’. In 1840 Holcombe wrote to the College on to say that he no longer had any connection with them and in 1841 the College gave them notice to quit and offered the site to other potential tenants. An offer came from Arthur Hills of Battersea – the brother of Frank Hills - someone else we will meet later on the Greenwich Peninsula. Arthur had a naphtha distillery in Battersea. The other offer was from Charles Holcombe.

Clippers are described as “ships which travelled at blistering speeds, conditions on board were brutal, and opium was their most profitable cargo’. Cutty Sark was not built until 20 years after Sea Witch but her name is thought to have been inspired by the older ship. Another, Sea Witch a barque, was built just across the river from Morden Wharf, at Blackwall Yard in 1848. She was also very fast and took part in the First Tea Race from China to England in 1850. The name of the pub after one, or both, of these fast ships might mean that Holcombe had money invested in them or in their cargoes of wool, tea and opium.

must spend at least £300 an acre on ‘improvements’.. In 1843 the tithe map shows ‘Chas and Thomas Holcombe: house, tar factory, sheds and yard’ and on other plots ‘brass foundry, tar and Asfelt works’ and ‘refiner of coal tar, spirit, pitch and varnish’.. Then the Commissioner of Woods and Forests gave consent for an embankment to his wharf plus (unidentified) ‘restrictions of a very unusual and prejudicial character’.

Holcombe developed Morden Wharf not only with industries but with houses built to specifications from Morden College, plus pubs and a chapel. He complained about the riverside path and laid asphalt on it and he built a draw dock.

We must remember that his money originated from a brewery because around 1848, a public house was built close to the riverside. It

included, at the back, a ‘pot house’ and a ‘wash house’. It was built by a William Drew and by 1850 he as the owner and licensee. It was originally named the ‘Morden Castle’ but then renamed the ‘Sea Witch’ and it was accessed via Sea Witch Lane. This name is thought to have come from the famous American opium clipper ‘Sea Witch’, which was launched in 1846 and held several port-to-port sailing records. It was an American

The management of the pub was by members of the Goss family from 1880 probably as a tied house for Gurney Hanbury of Camberwell.

By the 1890s the pub was very dilapidated and a visitor described the walk from Morden Wharf Road “through clouds of dust which obscure the view ahead and the most unpleasant fumes .... passing under a network of pipes”. There had been a “garden in front, a booth and benches down to the river” but the garden had been disused for some time and the whole place was covered with dirt and cement dust. An ‘ancient lights’ sign on the front remained to guarantee the river views. In 1900, the lease was transferred to Whitbread’s Brewery.

In 1935, the Holcombe family lease was due to expire but Whitbread renewed it although it the pub was in a very rundown state. Then on 12 July 1944 it was badly damaged by a V-1 which had landed on the riverside path nearby. There were two fatalities 18 year old Ernest Tinton of Grenada Road, and Walter Saveall, 39 from Azof Street. Nine other casualties were taken to St Alfege’s Hospital. Saveall may have been a member of the Home Guard but it is not clear if he was on duty or not. The ‘Sea Witch’ pub itself was lost forever. It was not rebuilt and in 1953, the site was leased to Woodward Fisher, barge builders. There is however a rumour that a new pub built by the current developers on Morden Wharf might be named ‘Sea Witch’.

Holcombe also built a pub nearer to Blackwall Lane in 1869, but we know very little about it. It was called ‘The Mechanic’s Arms’ and was on the north side of Morden Wharf Road. The first licensee in 1870 was again William Drew and throughout its existence the licence was held by the Drew family. It was demolished in the late 1890s as part of the LCC’s Tunnel Avenue construction programme.

However many industries were to flourish on Morden Wharf – as we will see.

public notices ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS – HILLS AND VALES 1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make an Order to accommodate measures as part of the Council’s response to the Public Health considerations in connection to the Covid-19 pandemic. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily: a) prohibit all motor vehicles (including motorcycles), from entering into, exiting from or proceeding in: i) Royal Place, at its junction with Royal Hill; ii) Hyde Vale, at its junction with King George Street; iii) Point Hill, at its junction with Royal Hill; iv) Maidenstone Hill, at its junction with Point Hill; v) Winforton Street, at its junction with Blisset Street; vi) Crooms Hill, at its junction with Nevada Street; b) suspend the gated closures in: i) Crooms Hill, at its junction with General Wolfe Road; ii) Hyde Vale, at its junction with West Grove; iii) West Grove, at its junction with Hyde Vale; c) provide a one-way system in Royal Hill, from its junction with Greenwich South Street to its junction with Brand Street.

[Note: This Order will not apply to first response emergency vehicles.]

2. The Order is required to promote active travel to support the recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.

3. The Order would come into force on 19th August 2020 and would continue to remain in force for a maximum of 18 months.
