Kids can cool off in our paddling pools this summer With the school holidays now in full swing, we’re delighted to have reopened our paddling pools at Hornfair Park and Winn’s Common. To enable social distancing there are four sessions per day, with a maximum capacity of 45 people per session. Facilities will be cleaned in between each session and entry is strictly first come, first served.

Leisure centres reopen After four long months, seven of the borough’s leisure centres are now open to visitors.

Charlton Lido, Greenwich Centre, Eltham Centre, Thamesmere Leisure Centre, Plumstead Centre and Coldharbour Leisure Centre are all now open. Waterfront Leisure Centre is open, but the pool remains closed for refurbishment.

Illustration workshop with Nick Ellwood

His first job involved documenting the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990 through drawing what he saw, after which he went on to work for Warner Brothers as part of a team of illustrators creating images to be used on merchandise for the likes of Harry Potter, Fifa and Looney Tunes. He went on to set up his own branding and digital media agency and today, you can find Nick teaching illustration classes at the Old Royal Naval College (or virtually, on the landmark’s website).

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us about your love of illustration. What continues to attract you to it after all these years?

Nick Ellwood: Illustration has the power to entertain, inform and add to debate; I’ve always loved the way drawings could document and record life. When I moved to York with my

young family, I started drawing the city and in particular the grotesques and carvings on the minster walls, using these to influence a series of novelists I was also drawing at the time. This sense of character, playfulness and exploration of human behaviour still holds strong in why and what I illustrate today. Working with museum and heritage clients has offered a wonderful platform to re-explore stories from the past and engage people with this history.

HOM: Tell us about your illustration lessons at the Old Royal Naval College (ORNC)...

NE: My work with the ORNC started in 2018 when I was asked to create an illustrated guide for children to help engage them with the Painted Hall, which was undergoing a major development project at the time. I was

immediately struck by the amazing stories in the Painted Hall along with the history of building and Greenwich itself. I’ve since been commissioned

by ORNC to create a series of five mini booklets aimed at children aged 8+ (and adults too), titled ’Tales From The Old Royal Naval College’.

HOM: How did you find the experience of shifting your classes online during the lockdown?

NE: The series of YouTube drawalong videos #DrawWithNick was a suggestion from the ORNC itself in the lockdown as a way of creating some engaging online material inspired by the history and heritage of the site. The sessions are aimed at children aged 5+ and offer fun drawing tips, as well as a space for children to draw and share their versions of four different

characters. I’d never done anything like this before and it was quite a challenge to set up a makeshift home studio and to talk straight to the camera while drawing! My work teaching illustration degree students has carried on throughout the lockdown on [online communication platforms] Zoom and Teams.

HOM: Has there been a silver lining to moving your work online?

NE: The internet has always been an important tool for sharing my work with potential clients and a wider audience. However, learning to adapt to new situations and opportunities during the lockdown – all made possible by the internet and technologies available to us now – has opened up new kinds of work.

sPOTLIGHT It’s exciting to look at the new opportunities the lockdown has made possible for education, museums and the heritage sector, even after such a challenging time. For me, this has been the silver lining.

from documenting the migration crisis in Calais to work on a commission to illustrate the slum-like areas of York in the late 1700s for children. My depiction of the slums was highly influenced by the camps and mud I saw in Calais.

HOM: Do you see your work continuing in the digital sphere, then?

HOM: What’s next for you workwise?

NE: In some capacity, yes. The current project I’m working on for Greenwich is an activity guide for younger children designed to be used at home. One idea I’m looking at is creating a series of online demonstrations in which I do the activities at home myself, such as using paper and cardboard to create pop-up versions of some of the buildings, landmarks and people from Greenwich.

HOM: As well as teaching children, you illustrate content in newspapers such as the Guardian. How drastically does your approach to your practice differ when illustrating for different age groups?

NE: My love of drawing, coupled with my interest in celebrating people’s characters and behaviours, goes back to first seeing John Tenniel’s drawings for Alice in Wonderland when I was six years old. Part of the reason I love these illustrations so much is because they have an appeal that crosses all ages.

After all, drawing is a universal, ageless and timeless form of communication.

Fundamentally, my approach doesn’t change too much when I’m drawing for different age groups, although the focus of the subject matter does certainly have an impact. I remember coming back

NE: Before lockdown happened, I was working towards an exhibition to be shown at the ONRC visitor centre and a series of workshops that was going to happen alongside this. Fortunately, this has been moved to spring 2021, and I am really excited to develop some new work and ideas for it. I’m sure my new-found experience in creating online tutorials and demonstrations will feed into this.

The show must go on… in 2022: Broadway Theatre to close for refurbishment It’s kept culture alive in Lewisham since 1932, now Broadway Theatre is about to undergo its first refurbishment since 2001 – midway through a year that’s already seen the grade II* listed art deco building closed for several months due to the coronavirus. Throughout the lockdown, theatre manager Carmel O’Connor and her team have kept the theatre’s community spirit alive through online initiatives largely focused on preventing older members of the community from being left feeling isolated.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to Carmel to find out more…

Broadway Theatre’s refurbishment is scheduled to begin in August of this year and is expected to carry on until 2022 – a year that coincides with the theatre’s 90th birthday and Lewisham wearing the Borough of Culture title – when Carmel is hopeful they’ll be able to reopen. “I am very excited about the future of the Broadway Theatre. I have worked at the theatre for over 25 years and I was appointed as Theatre Manager on July 1 this year, a post I feel privileged to hold,” she says.

Like all arts venues, Broadway Theatre has been closed since March to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The loss of footfall has undoubtedly resulted in a sizable loss of income for the venue. But while the building has been darkened, Carmel and her team have thrown their energies into protecting the older members of their community from feeling isolated.

The Broadway Blazers is a scheme offering musical theatre classes to over-55s. Run by Broadway Theatre tutor Judy Gordon, the sessions see the group work on popular Broadway and West End musicals,

from Phantom of the Opera, to 42nd Street and Les Miserables.

Prior to lockdown, the two-hour sessions took place once a week at the theatre, costing £6 per person.

Since closing the theatre, the team have moved the sessions online and made them free in a bid to keep the participants feeling connected. “We received an Arts Council grant to fund the project this year and adapted the classes to virtual sessions during lockdown so that the elderly and those isolating could still benefit from a creative outlet and the company of friends,” explains Carmel.

Ahead of the now virtual weekly classes, Judy sends the participants scripts, songs and homework, which they work on individually ahead of meeting as a group. During the live sessions, the Blazers sing, dance and perform their monologues over Zoom.

“We are very proud of our incredible Broadway Blazers,” beams Carmel, adding that adapting to communicating over Zoom was initially challenging, but a chance for everyone to learn

new skills and ways of being creative. “[Participants] enjoy the classes so much that they have invested in computers and technology to enable them to continue during the pandemic, and their dedication and willingness to adapt is a testament to their generation.”

Ordinarily, the group work towards performing a live stage show in the theatre’s studio space around Christmas time, however this year, the final product will be a video recording of the group members performing remotely from their homes. “We are working towards a film, which we hope will be a lasting legacy of the creativity of our older community in Lewisham, their resilience and how they adapted and coped with isolation during the pandemic,” Carmel says. “We hope it’s a film that celebrates their joy, contribution to society and how some of our most vulnerable older residents have the capacity to triumph over adversity.”

The government recently announced a £1.5bn emergency arts fund to help venues and creatives struggling

financially as a result of the lack of work. Whether Broadway Theatre is eligible for a portion of the budget is not yet known. “To see so many venues, galleries, museums and music spaces close during lockdown has been really worrying so the announcement from the government is really welcome,” says Carmel.

“We’re waiting to see more detail about how [the fund] will work, but we hope to see these fantastic organisations open again soon.”

Carmel has several hopes for Broadway Theatre when it reopens in 2022.

“I have always been aspirational about the venue and now have the perfect opportunity to make those aspirations a reality,” she says. “In the last few years, we have held the ‘Catford Upon Avon’ festival, ‘The Catford Fringe Festival’, the ‘Festival Of Remembrance’, and we intend to build on those initiatives.

I also hope to bring more live music and spoken word to the venue.”

was an audience member at one of its comedy nights. “We hope to bring in associate artists to enhance the artistic offer in our studio theatre,” says Carmel. “We are also creating a community touchdown space in our café area to encourage people to come in and experience the venue, have meetings, go online, and join in classes and community initiatives,” she reveals.

So, it’s not goodbye, it’s see you later for Broadway Theatre. “There are no limits to what I believe this venue can achieve and I will always fight for it and do whatever I can to make it an amazing place for all our community to share,” says the theatre manager, proudly.

“If the pandemic has taught us anything, it’s to value our theatres and cultural sector and recognise the vital role they play in our lives. Lewisham is to be the Borough of Culture in 2022, and the Broadway Theatre will stand tall and proud in its 90th year.”

Outdoor film screenings return in time to save the summer Nearly another casualty of coronavirus-related cancellations, outdoor film screenings have been given the go-ahead – meaning we won’t have to wait another year to watch a film under the stars. Having recently reopened its doors to the public, the Old Royal Naval College has revived its annual partnership with Luna Cinema, one of the country’s leading producers of open-air film screenings, to offer a trio of movies to be enjoyed al fresco, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Luna Cinema screenings are run on a simple formula: a crowd-pleasing film is shown on a big screen in a beautiful or prestigious setting. With its credentials as a World Heritage Site, the Old Royal Naval College certainly ticks the setting box, while the films being shown – recent biopics Judy and Rocketman, and quotable classic Dirty Dancing – are all big blockbusters. Luna Cinema will be based at the Old Royal Naval College from Tuesday 4 – Thursday 6 August; at the time of writing, exact dates and timings for screenings are yet to be announced.

It was over 30 years ago that Dirty Dancing first cha-cha-cha’d its way onto our screens, telling the story of 17-year-old Baby (Jennifer Grey), who falls in love with

dance teacher Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) while on a family holiday. The film, written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino, was released in October 1987 and since then, it’s firmly held onto its place as one of the greatest romantic dramas of all time. Swimming in iconic moments (the lift scene and the Lover Boy miming scene to name a couple) and memorable quotes (“Nobody puts Baby in the corner” perhaps the most famous), it’s among the best of its kind.

Judy (2019), meanwhile, documents the life of Hollywood darling Judy Garland.

Directed by the Almeida Theatre boss Rupert Goold and starring Renée Zellweger (Bridget Jones), the story unfolds in a slim window towards the

end of Judy’s life, as the actress toured London to financially support her children while being so far away from them.

Elton John biopic Rocketman (2019) is another movie getting the open air screening treatment at the Old Royal Naval College next week. The film was largely okayed by the critics, with the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw describing it as “a sucrose-enriched biopic-slash-jukeboxmusical hybrid”, while wryly adding that it’s “better at the tiaras than the tantrums”.

of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the evening, while those looking to pair the screening with a bite to eat should check out the offering from the gourmet food trucks on site.

Seating wise, it’s a bring-your-own affair and guests are invited to roll out a blanket or pitch a picnic chair, depending on what they feel most comfortable on. If you forget, you might still be in luck – previous years have seen blankets and inflatable backrests available for sale on the night. Those who purchase a premium ticket, meanwhile, can make

themselves comfy on a director’s chair in a prime position in front of the screen.

In following the story of cable making on Enderby Wharf I am very aware of trying to get a long story of some very complex technological advance down to a very short article – and apologise in advance for any mistakes and omissions.

The first Greenwich cable company was at Morden Wharf – and we will get there later on as we continue along the riverside path, going down river – this was Glass Elliot and they bought Enderby Wharf from the Enderby brothers in 1854.

We have already followed the story of the Atlantic Cable and how the successful cable was made in Greenwich and that Enderby Wharf was used to site huge tanks where the manufactured cables could be coiled and inspected– to absolutely minimise the danger of imperfect cables being used and then wreck the whole project. In 1864 Glass Elliott merged with the Gutta Percha Company, who provided the insulation materials, and became the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company– known as Telcon. There were to be more company and name changes over the years.

In 1868 another Atlantic cable was laid, this time for the French. It ran from Brest but the cable was made in Greenwich and laid by Great Eastern. Four more

transatlantic cables were laid before 1900. From 1869 more and more cables were laid - between Malta and Alexandria and then Aden to Bombay. Great Eastern carried the whole of the India cable and was apparently painted white in order to do so. Celebrations were due to be held in 2020 on the anniversary of the laying of this India cable – but sadly corona virus meant that they were cancelled. It would have been good to have something at Enderby Wharf to mark this historic event.

A lot of Greenwich people will remember the cable ships at Enderby Wharf, and in particular the last of them, John W. Mackay, which was moored alongside as a sort of exhibit until 1988. Rumour had it that she was painted up, on one side only, when the Queen came down the river. Telcon had a fleet of ships and for many years the cable laying and repair ships were moored at Enderby Wharf alongside river structures called dolphins. Some of the loading gear, installed in the 1950s, still remains on the jetty as a monument to 162 years of the manufacture of

and composition of cables, and in the technologies that allowed for continuing better and clearer communication.

Changes in cable composition and development of valves began to make international telephone calls possible.

In the Second World War Telcon made over 1000 nautical miles of cable plus another 1000 miles for D Day alone. They also made telcothenene – a version of polythene – as a cover for cables used with radar installations. In the 1950 repeaters began to be made and electronic techniques were used. From 1961 a Greenwich made ‘repeatered’ telephone cable ran from Europe to Canada. By then Telcon – and associated companies had far more sites than just Greenwich but this riverside works was still the major manufacturer of undersea cables, despite company mergers in the 1970s. www.weekender.co.uk

History In over 150 years work this site has been of vast importance internationally and has provided the revolutionary technology which today we take for granted. In the 1860s, cables transmitted a few messages in Morse at 18-12 words a minute. Today fibre optic cables carry terabits of data that support the vast traffic on the Internet.

The research facilities at Greenwich have kept it in the forefront and many new technologies have emerged. There was development of specialist materials by the metallurgical section which produced – for example, Mu Metal. Telcon were also early users not only of Telcothene, but also were early users of PVC. There was close collaboration with other local companies in producing new materials for use in the electrical and electronics industries – as for instance with Charlton based Johnson and Phillips A couple of years ago we had news of a Nobel Prize being awarded to Charles Kao. He had been educated at Woolwich Poly and then worked for a while at Greenwich – his prize was for his role in the development of optical fibre technology for cables. The first undersea optical cable and repeater was developed at Greenwich.

As satellite technology began to make itself felt less undersea cables were made here. In 1975 the last cable made at Greenwich was for a link between Venezuela and Spain. The Greenwich factory remained however the largest supplier of submarine cable systems in the world, latterly making repeaters and associated equipment. They achieved the Queen’s Award to Industry four times.

In 2002 the environmental charity Groundwork undertook a great deal of work at Enderby Wharf and elsewhere on the riverside. Working with Alcatel they upgraded the main jetty and refurbished the preserved machinery used to transfer cable onto cable ships here. They also installed new gates, a boat and a repeater.

At the same time the smaller jetty was grassed over and the steps to the foreshore between the two were renovated. From under the steps emerged Tudor Bendish Sluice, once the boundary marker for the area. A carving on the steps was installed as a decorative feature Soon after Alcatel, the owners of the works sold the river frontage to a developer for housing. That developer then went out of business and the area was left with no security. The original developer had planned a major terminal for cruise liners on the riverside but no work on this was ever done. A major public campaign began against the berthing of ships here, which would run polluting diesel power.

Eventually the then owners admitted there were no plans for the terminal.

Alongside Enderby House was an office building with decorative cable and gutta percha motifs above the lintels and around the door. This was demolished and apparently no features kept. Also demolished was a chimney, on what once had been the site of the Beale works. On the riverside Bendish Sluice was removed but the carvings on the steps were eventually saved by constant nagging from local campaigners. Gates to the steps have since been erected.

Enderby House itself had been used as offices by the cable companies and was

not in bad condition if a bit ‘tired’. Once in the ownership of the developer it was neglected and was squatted, burnt, and left to rot. As a result a campaign group was formed, the Enderby Group, to try and save the house and get it used so as to include some information on the telecoms heritage of the area. A new housing developer, Barratt’s, took over and soon the riverside area was covered in large blocks of flats. People began to move in.

The planning consent for the flats required Enderby House to be restored and Barratts stabilised the property and restored the exterior. It was then announced that it would become a pub operated by Young’s brewery. We are still waiting to see what will happen but the hoped for telecoms heritage centre still seems near impossible to achieve A sculpture called Lay Lines by Bobby Lloyd has also been installed together

with information panels. The idea was to replicate the sections through cables which were made on site – only much much bigger than the original. It could also be linked to the other art works on the site, which were installed by Groundwork – and maybe become a site on an arts trail to inform visitors.

Enderby Group is grateful for the expertise of Alcatel staff, past and present, some of whom seem to be able to immediately identify and date cables coming from any time in the past hundred and eighty years.

The resourcefulness and knowledge of the staff at Enderby Wharf has made this site on the Greenwich riverside in effect the international centre for the development of international communication which dominates the world today.

Greenwich people should be really proud of this site and what has been achieved here.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has teamed up with Charlton Athletic and the Royal Borough of Greenwich to run week-long summer camps for young people in the Borough.

Open to 8 to 16-year-olds (and those up to 18 with special educational needs and disabilities), the Young Greenwich Summer Camp will provide educational and sport activities as well as nutritious meals and fun with friends for children and young people in Royal Greenwich.

Deptford arts venue The Albany begins its journey to reopening It’s been a tough four months for Deptford’s multipurpose arts centre The Albany. Like all independent performance spaces, it’s lost a significant amount of money without the footfall. As the team behind the venue begin to take tentative steps towards reopening it to the public – with plans announced for the building and café to open in September, with a season of socially-distanced events following later in the autumn – Holly O’Mahony speaks to chief executive and artistic director Gavin Barlow to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: What have the months of closure been like for The Albany as an independent arts organisation?

Gavin Barlow: Being closed for so long has been incredibly difficult.

We’re a charity and have taken a huge financial hit, which has meant we’ve had to furlough many of our staff to safeguard our survival. Our programme and activities are designed to serve the needs of our community, so when we were forced to close it left a large gap for the people who regularly visited. As a result, we’ve had to find new ways of supporting

our community from a distance.

HOM: How have you kept in touch with your local community and regulars while the venue itself has been closed?

Gavin Barlow: One of the first things we did was to set up regular phone calls to our older adults who are part of ‘Meet Me at the Albany’, a project designed to reduce isolation among the over 60s. We’ve also pivoted our website to reflect the changes and have been active on social media, sharing news and updates from ourselves as www.weekender.co.uk

well as artists and partners.

HOM: Tell us about the Meet Me on the Radio initiative. How did it come about and what is it designed to achieve?

GB: Meet Me on the Radio is a weekly radio show, created in collaboration with members of the Meet Me at the Albany programme, that takes inspiration from the local area, members’ stories and wider events.

When we first went into lockdown we felt that – as a group who were already at risk of isolation – it was essential to support Meet Me members as a priority. As many don’t have access to digital devices and meeting face-to-face was too much of a risk, we came up with the idea of a radio show to help provide entertainment and connection for the group in a way that was familiar and accessible.

HOM: While closed as an arts venue, The Albany hosts twiceweekly community food growing sessions. Why are initiatives like community gardens and allotments so important right now?

GB: We’ve been running the ‘Come ‘n’ Grow’ garden sessions for some time

now and as an outdoor activity where social distancing could be enacted, it seemed like a simple thing we could do to begin slowly welcoming people back. As an arts centre, the wellbeing of our community is a top priority and gardening is proven to have huge benefits for physical and mental health. Sustainability is of course a huge issue too and we’ve found that getting people directly involved in growing leads to more conversations about what we can do to protect the environment. Usually we use a lot of the produce in our café, however we’ve recently been making chutney which we’ve been delivering to Meet Me members as a treat!

HOM: Will the government’s announcement of a £1.5bn emergency arts fund be of help to The Albany?

GB: The news of a financial package was very welcome, however we’re yet to see the details of how this money will be distributed so we can’t comment on whether we will be in receipt of a grant.

Access to the arts and creativity is a public good, and so securing our future so we can continue to invest in, and support, our community is our priority.

HOM: What steps will you be taking to reopen the venue safely?

GB: We’ve been paying attention to the best guidance both in the UK and abroad, and have implemented a one way system through the building. We don’t plan to open up the venue any further than has already been announced through summer, but will be issuing the public with fuller guidance about additional hygiene measures when visiting the building in due course.

HOM: Finally, what other hopes do you have for reopening your doors to the community?

GB: We know that there’s a long road ahead to finding some kind of normality, however this time has taught us how much we need the arts and creativity. We’ve also seen the strength and resilience of our community, and hope that we come through this time with a greater sense of unity and appreciation for the role of the arts in our everyday lives.

Help us rejuvenate the borough’s parks!

We’re very happy to say that we are investing a huge £1 million in our parks and open spaces! We’ve set aside the money to breathe new life into our much-loved natural spaces, so that they can be even more enjoyable for residents and visitors.

But we need your help in how to spend it! We’ve launched a boroughwide consultation to ask you what improvements you’d like to see, and what you think should be prioritised.

Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities said: “Parks have become even more important to us recently as one of the only places we could relax, exercise and meet with friends and family during the pandemic. To make sure our green spaces are the best they can be the Council is about to spend £1 million on improvements.

But what should we do? Create splash parks for kids, wildlife areas for nature or fabulous flower gardens – maybe a bit of all three or something completely different?

These are the all-important questions we are asking our residents with this borough-wide consultation, and I can’t wait to hear their thoughts before we begin work on re-energising our valued green spaces.”
