The school has moved its entire courses programme online, held virtual open days and set up a £10,000 grant to support local artists looking to make a similar transition.

Now, it’s showtime, which this year means putting on a variety of virtual music and dance events for audiences to enjoy.

A highlight of the season comes from the conservatoire’s Transitions Dance Company, which is premiering a filmed edition of its brand-new triple bill,.

The works have been choreographed by dance artist and movement director Cameron McMillan, award-winning Scandinavian choreographer-performer duo H2DANCE, and Italian choreographer and dance educator Elisa Pagani for what was meant to be the company’s annual international tour. But no sooner had it begun, than lockdown was imposed.

Fortunately, the works were filmed in a preview performance and as a result, the company is able to premiere them on July 22 on Trinity Laban’s YouTube channel, where they’ll be available to view for a limited time.

“All three pieces are very different from each other [and] while there isn’t an intentional theme per se, there is a clear undercurrent of time and transformation in the works,” reveals David Waring, artistic director of Transitions Dance Company.

How can you describe each of the works?

“H2DANCE’s piece is quite zany and rowdy.

Elisa Pagani’s piece is wonderfully and poetically human in its concerns, with a strong relationship to community and displacement, inspired by her awareness of the world’s refugee plight. Cameron McMillan’s piece looks at our current preoccupation with and exploration in AI, and reflects back on historical and mythical figures,” explains the artistic director, who himself was a member of Transitions Dance Company in the 80s, while he trained at what was then the The Laban Centre for Movement and Dance.

The dance company began working on the triple bill back in September of 2019, evolving and adapting the works right up until the tour began in February of this year. “We had completed half of the scheduled UK tour before being put on hold due to lockdown,” says David.

“It would have been fantastic to have continued to work on the pieces and share them around the UK and abroad.”

Thankfully, it’s custom at Trinity Laban to commission a filmmaker ahead of every tour to create a teaser trailer for the programme. To achieve this, the preview performances are filmed in their entirety on the Laban Theatre stage. “Due to this, we knew we had excellent multi-camera professional footage documenting all three works,” explains David. “So once we realised we wouldn’t be able to continue with the tour, we approached [the filmmaker who recorded the preview] David McCormick to make a special edit that we could share digitally,” he says.

Seeing the recorded triple bill was bittersweet for the artistic director. “For me, it was great to look back at this footage and see the performers right at the very beginning of their journey in realising these works. But it saddened me too because we weren’t at the finale of that journey when we had to stop.”

is a living art form, the works are never really finished. Live audiences become part of the development of the work as the performers respond to the moment, engaging with the presence of their viewers as well as the choreography. In calling off the tour so early in its run, David believes the company has been robbed of that experience.

Still, a digital premiere is better than none.

“I feel very proud of the performers, our wonderful costume and lighting designers and amazing technical team,” David beams.

“Of course, digital work will never be the same as attending and experiencing a live performance. The whole point of our art form is for it to be shared in the room, in real time, feeling the energy, passion and communication of the ideas and people involved,” he says. “Watching a screen is not a substitute for that experience, but it’s what we have to offer right now.”

The recorded triple bill is also a chance for an audience starved of live culture for the last four months to see new work. How does David hope the audience responds to the showcase? “I hope they see the varied skills of the company members, and the quality of the production, creation and

performance of the works,” he says. “I hope they are stimulated and inspired to see the company live in the future, and to go and see more contemporary dance work.”

For now, the future of live performance in the UK remains uncertain, but David is hopeful the school will be able to resume live lessons and rehearsals in the not too distant future. “We are investigating the possibility of in-person rehearsals beginning again in the autumn, and even the chance of some performances by the 2019/20 company,” he says, adding that the show will have to be dramatically adapted if the dancers are unable to touch one another. “There are lots of unknowns and we have to wait for government guidance,” he concludes.

Helen Mirren stars in Greenwich Theatre’s online premiere of The Secret Love Life of Ophelia It’s been a busy four months for Greenwich Theatre’s artistic director James Haddrell. Only a week after the lockdown was announced, forcing him to bring down the curtain and switch off the theatre’s lights indefinitely, he’d launched Greenwich Connects: an online programme of weekly interactive theatre opportunities, incorporating Monday monologues, Wednesday Wisdom, Flashback Fridays and Submission Sundays. Now, he’s premiering an allnew digital production of Steven Berkoff’s The Secret Love Life of Ophelia, which has been cast, rehearsed and filmed entirely in lockdown. Thrillingly, Greenwich Theatre patron Dame Helen Mirren makes a guest appearance, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“Originally, I was looking for a play that we could produce on stage as a socially distanced performance; [one that was] more than a solo show but where the actors don’t physically interact,” explains James, of his decision to direct a production of the play. “However, as the period of closure started to look longer I was keen to transfer a project online and this seemed like the perfect answer.”

First performed in 2001, The Secret Love Life of Ophelia imagines the courting phase in Hamlet and Ophelia’s relationship in a series of letters, seeking to fill in the gaps of what went on between the young lovers prior to Shakespeare’s tragic tale.

The Greenwich Theatre production sees a cast of 40 actors read the letters between Hamlet and Ophelia in a series of video messages recorded from their respective places of confinement.

Haddrell directs the production, which has been given the approval of Berkoff himself. “I wrote to [Berkoff] directly with details of my plan, particularly of giving opportunities to new graduates to perform major characters and be seen by industry and audience alike during lockdown, and he seemed

to like the idea,” grins James.

With the exception of Mirren, all cast members are reading letters either from Hamlet or Ophelia. “All of the major players in Shakespeare’s play are referenced, but this is an exchange between our two protagonists,” explains Haddrell. “The challenge for us has been to honour the character journey of Ophelia and Hamlet, so that the audience always knows where they are.

Both go on a big emotional journey, but I think our cast are pulling it off,” he says.

Mirren’s eagerly-anticipated guest appearance comes at the end of the performance when the star reads the final letter in the play – one from Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother, telling him about the tragic events that have happened while he’s been away.

Casting and rehearsing a play remotely is no easy task. “We sent out a general call for any actors who had graduated recently to submit a short tape of themselves performing any moment from Shakespeare – either a sonnet or a piece from a play,” James recalls.

“Then we put together as diverse a cast as possible from the 200 or more submissions.” For James, it

was imperative for the cast to reflect the fact anyone can experience “the kind of all-consuming, life-changing love affair that Hamlet and Ophelia go through”. He explains: “Ethnicity, regional accent, socio-economic position – none of those things matter in a story that is fundamentally about two young people falling in love.”

A production like this would ordinarily involve the cast working intensely with the director in a rehearsal studio in the lead up to the opening night. But as a result of the lockdown, James has had to direct his 40 cast members remotely, allowing no opportunity for group bonding or collectively seeing the performance develop.

“Directing remotely is tough and the time frame has been challenging too,” James admits. “We spend an hour with each actor working on their piece and locating it in their home, and then they send a tape for us to review,” he explains. “Then we follow up with notes and they reshoot if necessary, and then we’re done.” In contrast, James would ordinarily spend three to four weeks with a cast, which in terms of the play at hand would mean spending

at least four times as long per letter.

“The cast have been doing an amazing job, throwing themselves into it and really trusting the process,” he says.

From the onset of the lockdown, James’s number one goal has been to continue engaging with audiences and artists. “We provide shows and activities for people as well as opportunities for actors and creatives, and at a time when the risk of isolation is so heightened, our work is even more important” he says. “There continues to be a major imperative for us to attract donations – our net Covid-19 related losses to date are over £150,000 and continue to grow – but more importantly, we occupy a significant position in the community.”

Under the direction of James, Greenwich Theatre has done an impressive job of refocusing itself online, but it might not be long before the theatre is able to reopen its doors to the public. Following the government’s announcement of an emergency £1.5bn budget to save the arts, James plans to apply for a grant for the theatre to help cover the significant costs incurred over the period, and to reopen tentatively in early autumn.

“Our plan is to keep working online but to work towards a reopening in September,” James reveals, adding that the theatre box office is already open three afternoons a week for those who want to call in. “Once we open, we’ll have cabaret style seating in the studio with a programme of stand-up comedy and more theatrical shows in the main auditorium,” he says. The main target now for James and the team at Greenwich Theatre is planning for pantomime season – which accounts for more than a quarter of annual box office sales for many UK theatres – when the hope is that panto meister Andrew Pollard will return with fresh laughs and a new show.

For now, though, all eyes are on the 40-strong cast taking us deep into the minds of Shakespeare’s tragic young lovers.

The mark that shows visitors we are good to go in England WITH MANY attractions now beginning to reopen their doors, VisitEngland has come up with a way for people to check whether they are “good to go”.

VisitEngland has launched the We’re Good To Go initiative in partnership with the national tourist organisations of Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

The UK-wide industry standard and consumer mark will provide a “ring of confidence” for visitors as the tourism sector works towards reopening.

The We’re Good To Go mark means businesses can demonstrate that they are adhering to the respective Government and public health guidance, have carried out a COVID-19 risk assessment and checked that they have the required processes in place, ensuring they can welcome visitors back with confidence.

and open to all businesses across the industry.

Tourism minister Nigel Huddleston said: “I want to encourage the public to experience a great holiday this summer and be confident that they can do so safely.

“This new industry standard will show people that tourism businesses, destinations and attractions are adhering to the guidance.

It puts safety first and is an important move in getting this industry back up and running.”

VisitEngland director Patricia Yates said: “With millions of jobs and local economies across the country reliant on tourism it is essential that businesses can get up and running as soon as the respective Government advice allows to capture the peak British summer season.

“We want visitors to be able to enjoy their holidays and to support businesses to be confident they have

the correct procedures in place. Our priority is to make sure tourism rebounds to once again become one of the most successful sectors of the UK economy and this ring of confidence is a crucial step on the industry’s road to rebuilding.”

To obtain the mark businesses must complete a self-assessment through the online platform goodtogo. visitbritain.com including a check-list confirming they have put the necessary processes in place, before receiving certification and the We’re Good To Go mark for display in their premises and online.

Businesses across the UK are assessed according to their respective national guidance including the social distancing and cleanliness protocols that must be in place.

Five Lewisham restaurants that recapture that holiday feeling In a summer that will see far fewer of us than usual jet off to lie on sandy beaches, roam through cobbled lanes and explore the culinary specialities of far flung destinations around the world, many of us are relying instead on London’s restaurant scene to help recreate that magical holiday feeling. Through authentic decor, a carefully curated soundtrack and detailed knowledge of foreign flavours, these restaurants provide a portal onto other shores, allowing us diners a slice of virtual escapism.

Isla Ray On ducking into Isla Ray, you’ll be met with splashes of colour every which way you turn. Between the bamboo furniture, palm plants and beach scenes painted on the walls, the setting transports you somewhere tropical. Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has named Jonny Williams and Jenna Legg as this season’s Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Community Champions.

Jenna, in her first season with Charlton Athletic Women, immersed herself in a range of CACT projects and made a huge impact, particularly in schools.

The 23-year-old midfielder attended CACT’s Girls Cup tournament in November, alongside visiting a number of partner schools to give Q&As to aspiring footballers. She also visited Queen Elizabeth Hospital in December to spread the festive cheer to patients and staff.

Speaking about being named as this year’s PFA Community Champion, Jenna said: “I feel very pleased to have won this award, I think it’s a really special award to win.

I was very lucky to have the opportunity to get involved in the community this year and I enjoyed every minute of it.

“It was a really rewarding experience, I met lots of special people; coaches, children, hospital staff and it was just really nice to raise awareness of the club but also give back to the people that support us.”

In his first full season at the club, fellow midfielder Jonny Williams also became a frequent visitor to CACT projects this year.

He attended the EFL Kids Cup tournament in November, watching the semi-final and final before meeting participants.

He also made it to CACT holiday football courses, Charlton Challenge sessions in Kent, and spoke about the importance of the EFL’s You Vs Train campaign, raising awareness about the dangers of the railway.

Jonny took the time to sign autographs, take pictures with participants and answer questions about his experiences as a footballer throughout the season.

They have been brilliant role models for our participants and we appreciate the time they’ve taken to visit our programmes and engage with so many of those on our projects.

Lazy evenings sat people watching outside an Italian trattoria might not be possible this year, but Deptford restaurant Marcella is a hip, modern eatery fit to make you rethink every stereotype of how a decent Italian should be. Step inside the light and airy space, and opt, if you can, for a table towards the back of the restaurant, so you can peer into the open kitchen and see the magic happen. The ever-changing pasta-heavy menu is often void of tired classics, so don’t come in search of spaghetti bolognese or carbonara. Instead, discover the likes of casarecce (long twists of pasta) with broccoli and n’duja (think of a pasta bake, then mentally deconstruct and gourmet-ify it); and pretty plates of squid ink spaghetti with prawns, confit garlic and yellow datterini. Desserts are equally exquisite: if the olive oil cake is on the menu, it’s a must.

Hullabaloo is the place to go in Deptford for decent Indian food. The menu is almost entirely vegan (save for the paneer dishes), with the Veg Saadwala (a muddle of spinach, spices and tofu) and Veg Chilli Masala being two highlights. Peshawari naan comes fluffy and heavy on the coconut, and Dal Makhani – slow cooked black bean lentils with tomato and fenugreek – is buttery and silky enough to give the House Black Daal at gourmet chain Dishoom a run for its money. Lending itself to western hippy vibes, the restaurant is kitted out with rustic cutlery pots, exposed light bulbs hanging from ropes, and a scattering of houseplants. Indian inflections can be heard in the playlist and seen in a spread of retro Bollywood film posters smothering the walls.

The result is amiable, trendy and refreshing.

Help us spend £1 million on our parks and open spaces! i

We are very excited to announce that we will be spending £1 million on rejuvenating our parks and open spaces. The money has been set aside specially to breathe new life into our much-treasured natural spaces, so that they can be even more enjoyable for residents and visitors.

To help decide how the money should be spent, we've launched a borough-wide consultation to ask you what improvements you'd like to see, and what you think should be prioritised.

The consultation will be split into themes which include: play areas, sports and fitness, heritage, nature and wildlife, events and facilities and maintenance. We know that each of these elements are important to park visitors and this consultation will help us understand what changes you would like to see happen first.
