After its renovation, the playground on the Glyndon Estate is good as new!

Over lockdown, whilst we were inside, our team was working hard to rejuvenate Villas Road Playground on the Glyndon Estate and we happy to say - it's now open! On 9 July children from around the area had a fantastic time, trying out the new play equipment and running about on the new surface.

It has been an ongoing project and although it's been a tricky time, we've made sure these works have carried on over the past few weeks.

"The playground's absolutely amazing, it's got a lot more things for the younger children. We've been stuck in the house for too long and to have a local playground open again, I'll be using it a lot more.

It's perfect timing."

Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities, was there for the grand opening too and said "This has completely changed the landscape of this area. Hopefully we're going to be doing more of this across the borough. I'll definitely be bringing my children here."

Weaving an isolated community back together Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (GDIF), the outdoor performing arts festival which has brought south-east London to life with a wash of colour, rhythm and creativity every summer since 1996, is still expected to go ahead this year, reimagined to incorporate social distancing and extra safety measures. Swapping its usual June launch for late August, the 2020 festival will present largescale installations celebrating both the NHS and the environment.

Ahead of the festivities comes a community project, Weaving Together, which has been launched in a bid to unite people in these isolated times. The project has seen GDIF work with several artists to come up with activities around the theme of weaving which anyone can take part in from home, producing something which will eventually go on show as part of the festival. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Jessie Acton, marketing manager at GDIF, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: How did the idea for Weaving Together come about?

Jessie Acton: We had lots of community engagement projects in the pipeline which were originally going to lead up to a Woolwich Rising show from [French company] Gratte Ciel. The Weaving Together digital project, which works with lots of different artists around the theme of weaving, came organically from these ideas. We wanted to do something leading up to the festival which resonated with the strength of community spirit and togetherness shown by these communities during the lockdown. The amazing work done by the Greenwich Cooperative Development Agency (GCDA) in distributing food boxes to isolated and vulnerable residents gave www.weekender.co.uk

us a way of communicating with them, and so we had the idea of putting flyers with creative ideas into the food boxes.

HOM: What sort of activities are involved in the project that people can take part in from home?

JA: The idea from French company Gratte Ciel is a simple woven plait, which can be created with fabric and displayed in windows. Artist Natanya Mark, meanwhile, uses empty food packaging and plastic bags (such as the ones found in the food boxes) to make a loom and woven creation out of materials which people will already have in their homes.

We’re also working with Woolwichbased spoken word artist Rasheeda Page-Muir, who has written a poem inspired by a day spent volunteering with GCDA. She will be leading a series of workshops with young local people.

We’re also encouraging people to take part by providing their own responses to how weaving resonates for them and how their community has been pulling together during lockdown. We’re offering weaving tutorials on the GDIF website for anyone in need of some inspiration.

The next iteration of the project will provide raffia weaving materials to construct African-inspired creations

led by local Woolwich artist Lucy Isiah, and we’re working on projects with local organisations including the Rosebud Centre, Black Female Entrepreneur Greenwich, and the Caribbean Social Forum.

HOM: Why is a project like Weaving Together so important at a time when many of us – particularly those who were already vulnerable – are still feeling isolated in our respective homes?

JA: Woolwich has a very strong spirit of community and togetherness – we see that every year at the festival. We wanted to find a way of celebrating that spirit and creatively, and help reconnect people during lockdown, whilst collaborating with other fantastic local community initiatives such as GCDA, the Caribbean Social Forum and Woolwich Carnival.

HOM: How will the community’s contributions to the project come together as part of the festival?

JA: This year’s festival will feature a localised programme called ‘On Your Doorstep’, and many of the Weaving Together projects will be shared and displayed as part of these pop-up events.

HOM: Ultimately, what do you hope the Weaving Together project provides members of the community who take part?

JA: Weaving Together is above all a celebration of the tremendous spirit of community which has always characterised Woolwich. It’s been great to see that at work throughout lockdown, both at the Woolwich Common Community Centre with the incredible management and volunteering effort there, and also with the borough’s installation of the Black Lives Matter giant slogan on the central pathway at General Gordon Square. We hope that this project will provide participants and audiences with an opportunity to reflect on the resilience and strength of communities in Woolwich, and also act as a celebration as we start to come out of isolation and lockdown.

Cutty Sark and the Painted Hall are reopening to the public

Greenwich’s famous tea clipper Cutty Sark and the Old Royal Naval College’s Baroque masterpiece the Painted Hall are both reopening their doors to the public this July. Royal Museums Greenwich, the organisation behind Cutty Sark, has confirmed the ship-turnedmuseum will reopen on Monday July 20, while the Painted Hall is expected to reopen later in July, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Cutty Sark is the last-surviving tea clipper in the world. Once a portal carrying cargo ranging from teas to gunpowder, whisky and buffalo horns, today the three-masted, 963-tonne ship is one of Greenwich’s best-loved visitor attractions, offering family activities, comedy nights and concerts as well as a chance to walk its hallowed decks and admire the elegant lines of its hull.

When Cutty Sark reopens, it will be with several new safety measures in place.

Pre-booked, time-allocated tickets must be purchased in advance to ensure social distancing can be maintained, while a new one-way system will also be in place. Protective screens have been installed at both the ticketing and retail till points, and sanitiser stations are dotted across the site. The café is not expected to open initially but toilet facilities will be available to visitors with enhanced cleaning regimes in place.

Greenwich. Plans are in place for the organisation’s other three sites – the National Maritime Museum, Queen’s House and the Royal Observatory Greenwich – to reopen later this summer.

Steeped in centuries of history, the Painted Hall was painted between 1707 and 1726 by Sir James Thornhill, during the era the building served as the Royal Hospital for Seamen at Greenwich.

Today, it’s one of Greenwich’s most prominent landmarks, attracting art enthusiasts, tourists and also families thanks to its engaging programme of children’s activities. It’s been used as a location for the annual Greenwich Music Time festival and for filming shows including the hit series Poldark.

Sasha Greig, head of visitor experience, retail and marketing at the Old Royal Naval College is excited about the prospect of reopening. “We have been working behind the scenes to put measures in place to keep visitors and staff safe,” she says. “These include limiting ticket numbers and requiring pre-booking for tours to control capacity; one-way routes in certain www.weekender.co.uk

areas; queue marking and floor stickers to indicate routes; enforcing social distancing; hand sanitising stations in building entrances and keeping some spaces closed for now.”

Guided tours will be offered, but visitors will also have the option of using the venue’s new smartphone tour which will allow them to digitally interact with the art and architecture, and visit at their leisure.

“When we closed, we quickly moved to engage with audiences digitally so that we could continue to share our stories,” says Sasha, commenting on the museum’s new tech-savvy offering.

“We launched our virtual Painted Hall tour, which is now a finalist in the Time Out Time In Awards, and we have been putting out regular blog posts to educate and entertain people all over the world.”

While many cultural organisations announced reopening plans for July 4, the first official day they could reopen in accordance with government guidelines, the team behind the Old Royal Naval College decided to wait a little longer before reopening the

venue. “We have been working hard to get it right before we reopen and feel confident that we have good measures in place for reopening safely,” says Sasha, pointing out they’ve used this time to learn from fellow organisations in the sector that have already opened.

Now, Sasha and the team are looking forward to returning to their mission of engaging the public with the heritage of the site. “We have always seen ourselves as at the heart of the Greenwich community and [the Painted Hall] is a beautiful London landmark that is a bit of a hidden gem,” she says. “We hope that we can be a place for locals to celebrate and reconnect with the rich heritage and breath-taking beauty of their local area.”

THE UK Government helped thousands of pubs, restaurants and hairdressers reopen safely on Saturday, July 4, with detailed practical information to help keep staff and customers safe.

The new Covid-19 secure guidance for the hospitality sector and hairdressers meant businesses were able to reopen across England, provided they met key criteria.

UK Government officials have worked alongside over 300 key industry stakeholders and trade unions to develop clear plans in line with scientific advice and public health directions, building on existing guidance published in May. The new guidance

Pubs, restaurants, bars and hairdressers have followed UK Government advice and started to reopen, marking the start of summer. Safety measures to protect staff and customers are in

place, with people asked to be sensible, continue to follow social distancing messages to remain two metres away from other people where possible

sets out a range of measures for pubs and restaurants to become Covid-19 secure, including: n Requiring use of table service where possible

instead of ordering at the bar and assigning a single staff member per table. n Discouraging non-essential trips by staff within venues, such as between the kitchen

Community pub which is making the safety of its customers a top priority CASE STUDY THE DOG AND PARROT A COMMUNITY pub in Nottinghamshire is among many across England that has worked hard to put plans in place to be able to reopen on July 4 after being closed for more than three months.

Kathryn Boam, who owns the The Dog and Parrot Real Ale House in Eastwood with husband David, talked us through the steps they have taken to follow UK Government COVID-19 guidance and ensure staff and customers

are safe when they open their doors. Kathryn said: “We are a community hub in the area and have quite a few older customers that use our pub to maintain their friendship group.

“We are safeguarding them, making sure that social distancing guidelines are in place, and kept to.

“Myself and my husband work full time and we have one person working 29 hours with five others working part-time as and when required.

“We have needed more staff on duty to make sure all the measures are kept to correctly. This is a

higher cost to the business and will be factored into our business model.

“We carried out a full risk assessment of the business and premises, putting safe distancing measures in line with government guidance.”

Measures introduced at the pub include: n Placing hand sanitiser stations at the front and back door, and in all toilets. n Ensuring there is clear signage throughout the pub, and the instructions and rules are clear. n Anyone not following the

instructions, or acting in a manner that is

not safe, will be asked to leave. n Placing social distancing markers on the floor. n Wiping down surfaces with antibacterial spray using disposable cloths. n Providing hand sanitiser for staff. n Implementing table service only, so no one will be walking up to the bar. n Washing glassware after each use and jugs for the ales/ ciders/ lager where possible. n Having a single person responsible for cleaning tables and monitoring the floor and only one person serving behind the bar. n Checking all toilets regularly to ensure customers have hand soap and there are electric hand dryers in all toilets. n Changing opening times to ensure the pub can be deep cleaned regularly.

Kathryn added: “With the help of our staff, we carried out a risk assessment and came up with ideas and plans to ensure we can open safely and be COVID-19 secure.

“We have also been talking to other local landlords, working together to exchange ideas and ensure we are all joined up in our actions.”

The government is also consulting with industry on how businesses should record customer information to help keep customers and employees safe and support the new test and trace system.

Snowflake Luxury Gelato Ice cream chain Snowflake, which can be found at the O2 in Greenwich, doesn’t label itself a ‘luxury gelato’ parlour for no reason. Not only does the brand have branches in upmarket locations including Selfridges and South Kensington, back in 2018, its Selfridges branch released a ‘Billionaire Soft Serve’ for a crippling £99. Weighing nearly 400g, the luxurious scoop came with a Flake wrapped in gold leaf. Thankfully, other items on the menu aren’t quite as extravagant. Lewisham gets a sociallydistanced cinema September 2019 saw the opening of Catford Mews, a cinema and event space that became the first multi-screen complex housed in Lewisham in almost 20 years, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The venue was launched with positive, community-driven intentions by the Really Local Group, an organisation that creates and restores cultural infrastructure, with a mission to: ‘put the heart back into the high street’.

But just seven months after opening, Catford Mews – like all arts and entertainment venues – was forced to close its doors to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Three months later, the venue has reopened with safety front-and-centre.

Catford Mews reopened its Compound Coffee café on July 7, with a new outdoor seating area replacing indoor chairs and tables for now. Its cinema, bar and events programme is expected to be back up and running by late July or early August. And while the sanitary measures outlined for reopening the cinema might leave it resembling the waiting area at a doctor’s surgery,

at least you can feel confident in the venue’s safety-first approach.

How does a sociallydistanced cinema work?

When the cinema at Catford Mews reopens, things are going to look a little different. Staff will be wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), while plastic screens will stand between box office staff and their customers.

Screenings will run at a limited capacity and, thanks to the size of the venue, the team are able to operate at a reduced capacity with restricted seating. Hand sanitiser points will be dotted across the venue and ‘rigorous cleaning’ will be conducted between screenings. Clear signage will help guide visitors in and out of the venue safely.

“Even though cinemas can reopen from July 4, we will only do so when we are comfortable with the first stage of our reopening,” says Isra Al Kassi, programming and marketing manager at Catford Mews. “The programme will return as wide, accessible and exciting as it was before with new releases, themed seasons, and family favourites,” she adds.

What about the café and event space?

Coffees, pastries, smoothies and sandwiches are among the offering now available to pick up from the Catford Mews’ café, but all must be enjoyed outside. “Even though we’ll technically be able to open with indoor seating, we’ve chosen to open for takeaway only, and will keep indoor seating closed [but with] extended outdoor seating at the front,” explains Isra.

Live entertainment also won’t be offered on the venue’s stage just yet.

“As we have such a large space and house different businesses, we are mindful to make sure the reopening is done gradually,” Isra says.

Any advice for those nervous about coming to the venue post-lockdown?

“Catford Mews was developed to be a flexible space, and we are well prepared and equipped to handle a number of unexpected situations,” says Isra. “It’s important to remember that the lockdown experience has not been the same for everyone and that people may return in their own time,” she adds. “We want our customers to know that we are staggering the re-opening for everyone’s comfort and safety, and taking every precaution we can.”

Ahead of announcing plans to reopen the venue, the team at Catford Mews conducted a survey of their community to find out what safety measures customers wanted to be in place in order to feel safe. “Our survey showed that customers wanted clear communication of what was being done, so we will ensure clear signage is in place to ensure safety for visitors and staff alike,” says Isra.

Since opening seven months ago, Catford Mews has established itself as a space used by charities, networking groups, small businesses and event organisers.

“During lockdown, we were aware of, and concerned about, all the groups and organisations which had now found themselves displaced, and we’re looking forward to welcoming them back so they can continue their vital work,” says Isra, adding that she and her colleagues hope the venue will once again be viewed as a welcoming space for all, whether they pop in for “a perfectly made flat white, lunch from [on-site¬¬ eatery] Fuse, or a meet up with friends and family”.

“During this time, we’d like to remind local artists and business owners that if there’s anything we can do with our vast space to support their business, we’d be happy to have that conversation and to see how we can help.”

Young Greenwich members receive awards

Members from Hawksmoor Youth Hub, one of Young Greenwich’s youth hubs, have been awarded with the Jack Petchey Award for their outstanding achievement Young Greenwich is the youth service delivered by Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

During the lockdown period during Coronavirus, a group of young people between the ages of 11-16 helped peers within the community from a safe space.

One of the achievement winners, Nicole, offered support online to her friend Tilly during the lockdown period. Tilly found lockdown stressful and was worried about the transition from secondary school to college.

Since the easing of lockdown, Nicole and Tilly have been on a number of socially-distanced bike rides together.

Nicole also made hanging baskets and potted plants for Residents of Lakeview, a local care home which is located

Greenwich became the ‘Home of Communication’ - after the Enderbys left their riverside site and the ropewalk.

Successor companies then moved in who were to play a major part in the modern world of global communication.

he original cable works had been slightly down river at Morden Wharfand we’ll come to them in a later article. By the time they came to the vacant Enderby site in 1854 they were Glass Elliott and already involved in manufacturing some of the earliest underwater telegraph cables. At Enderby’s they were to dominate the manufacture of these cables worldwide.

The story of the Atlantic Telegraph is the biggest and most exciting episode in the history of Enderby Wharf – but we must not forget that while it was laid other cables were being made to be laid between countries all around the world, and that cable made at the Greenwich works was used for them too. For many years – before the flats were built – if you stopped at Enderby Wharf to look at the river someone would come along –some old fellow maybe – who would tell you ‘this is where the Atlantic Cable was made and where it was loaded onto great Eastern’.

They were proud of that and we need for all out new comers to the Greenwich riverside to know about it and be proud too.

The Atlantic cable was of course primarily a business venture. To do it not only needed a lot of complicated technology to be sorted out, but also for a lot of money to be raised. Government needed to be persuaded and involved. The British Government lent warships to help lay the first cable across the Atlantic but the attempt failed when the cable broke after only 280 miles. Grappling techniques were not capable of recovering it – but each failure meant lessons learnt.

soon failed. As a result of that failure large tanks were built at Enderby Wharf where the new cable could be safely held and continuously tested. Pictures show cable coiled in tanks while men on stools sit looking at it – they are looking for any flaws. In 1864 Glass Elliot merged with the Gutta Percha Company to become the Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Company – Telcon - a name which many will still identify with the site. It had John Pender as Chairman, Richard Glass as Managing Director and George Elliot and Daniel Gooch as board directors. They were about to make the third cable.

In order to carry the enormous heavy cable and be able to service it whatever happened in mid-Atlantic, Brunel’s huge, and vilified, ship Great Eastern was used. When you hear people saying Great Eastern was a failure and doomed disaster – tell them, Great Eastern was a wild success and without her the Atlantic cable could not have been laid when it was. Launched seven years earlier from Millwall and, known as ‘The Leviathan’, she was bigger and more powerful than any ship before her. She had failed as a passenger liner and was bought very cheaply by Daniel Gooch, who promptly joined the Board of the Telegraph Construction Company and offered Great Eastern in return for shares in the Atlantic Telegraph Co There was great interest in this new, third, cable and the Prince of Wales visited Greenwich to see it being manufactured.

took two weeks to load the new cable into Great Eastern. The ship was so big that she could not be brought alongside Morden or Enderby Wharves and every bit of cable had to be ferried out to her and loaded off Sheerness. She left Greenwich for Foilhummerum Bay, Valentia, the westernmost place in Europe, on 15th July 1865 carrying 21,000 tons of cable.

When they were 948 miles from Valentia and 717 miles from Heart’s Content in Newfoundland, the cable broke and was lost overboard. Four times it was retrieved from the ocean bottom, and four times it slipped away. Once again, the cable makers went back to Greenwich.

The Telegraph Construction and Maintenance Co. made yet another new cable, which was finished in 1866. Once again they loaded the Great Eastern and as she left the Thames for Valentia bands on shore played ‘Goodbye Sweetheart’.

On 27th July, she reached Heart’s Content and the cable was laid at last.

Great Eastern then went back so they could look for the cable lost in the previous attempt and on 2nd September instruments at the Valentia end of the broken cable began to move. Staff on board Great Eastern had found it two miles down, and it was now connected.

Within a few moments, both Europe and America knew where Great Eastern was and what had been done. It is one of the defining moments of the modern world.

It is difficult to overstate the importance of the Atlantic cable and the ‘profound transformation’ to which it led. The

telegraph was a major agent of change and an instrument whose importance was not lost on City business interests, which controlled land on the Greenwich Peninsula. Within another two years connections were made to Tokyo and Melbourne and world markets were shifting towards globalisation. At the end of the 20th century there was much talk about the global communications revolution. The real revolution came a hundred and sixty eight years ago when wires twisted on Greenwich marsh crackled into life on the sea bed.

I’ve been told that for many years one of the Great Eastern’s masts stood on Enderby Wharf as a reminder of what had been achieved. Is that true? If it is, what happened to it? Of all the sites involved with the cables only one has an exhibition to show what happened - - and that is at Heart’s Content in Newfoundland. I understand something may be in place at Valentia and am also aware that Hearts’ Content and Valentia have tried to get themselves as a joint World Heritage Site – a very long and thin one! I’m far from sure what has happened to that now.

In Greenwich we – the Enderby Group with a lot of local support – have tried and tried to get some recognition for what was achieved here. On the riverside some cableloading remains on the jetty and some steps into the river, covering a medieval sluice, have a carving depicting the history of cable manufacture and it is hope that this will remain. It’s had some narrow scrapes in the past couple of years. The developers were also required to commission a sculpture to stand outside Enderby House.

This is Lay Lines, by Bobby Lloyd, which is designed to display cross sections of

cable as tables and chairs. There is also an electronic information system. We are also trying to get this as part of the East London/Peninsula sculpture trail and also make sure that there is some maintenance agreement in place. We had hoped the developers would take some interest in using Enderby House to commemorate the cables – but it is now to be a pub.

Royal Borough of Greenwich is spending £1 million on its parks and open spaces!

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has announced that it will be spending £1 million on rejuvenating its parks and open spaces. The money has been set aside specially to breathe new life into the borough’s natural spaces, so that they can be even more enjoyable for residents and visitors.

To help decide how the money should be spent, they have launched a borough-wide consultation to ask residents what improvements they’d like to see, and what they think should be prioritised.

“Parks have become even more important to us recently as one of the only places we could relax, exercise and meet with friends and family during the pandemic. To make sure our green spaces are the best they can be the Council is about to spend £1 million on improvements.

But what should we do? Create splash parks for kids, wildlife areas for nature or fabulous flower gardens – maybe a bit of all three or something completely different?

These are the all-important questions we are asking our residents with this borough-wide consultation, and I can’t wait to hear their thoughts before we begin work on re-energising our valued green spaces.”
