Beware of scammers We’re urging residents and local businesses to beware of scammers who want to cheat people out of their hard-earned money.

Our trading standards team has recently been dealing with cases that highlight how criminals are using different methods to trick people and anyone can fall victim to their exploits.

A couple from Blackheath were targeted by cold calling traders and were intimidated and harassed into paying more than £70,000 for a new roof.

Feedback about the virtual sessions has been positive, with residents commenting on how useful the meetings have been especially during the pandemic. Residents have been able to ask questions in real time from the comfort of their homes, without having to physically attend sessions.

“Any one of us can fall victim to a scam, but there are simple steps we can follow to protect ourselves - don’t give out personal information such as your name, address or bank details, avoid dealing with doorstep cold callers who may appear friendly but are very persistent and never send money to anyone you’ve never met before.”

A new leaf for Greenwich Libraries After months of lockdown, we’re delighted that six of our larger libraries have reopened this week, providing residents with access to a whole range of books as well as computers.

In all of the libraries, a strict cleaning regime will be in place and returned library books will be quarantined for 72 hours before they’re put back on the shelves.

From footy to food boxes: how Charlton Athletic is helping those left isolated in the community Supporters of local professional football club Charlton Athletic may already be aware of its charitable arm: Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT). The organisation is committed to putting back into the community by improving health, education and employment, and reducing crime. CACT has spent the last 27 years delivering football courses, offering borough-wide mentoring and youth services, and public health programmes focusing on both mental and physical wellbeing.

While the coronavirus outbreak has restricted the ways CACT can interact with its beneficiaries, the organisation has swiftly adapted to the government’s measures, offering its services online instead. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Jason Morgan MBE, founder and Chief Executive of CACT, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: How has the coronavirus outbreak affected the work CACT does, both in terms of where you focus your energies as an organisation and how you carry out your work in the community?

Jason Morgan: We quickly realised the huge impact shielding and lockdown would have on the more vulnerable members of our community and that we would immediately have to change a large proportion of what we deliver.

Given our existing relationship with Royal Borough of Greenwich Public Health, which we run our Live Well service on behalf of, we were asked to deliver the Greenwich Community Hub to help support vulnerable residents following the coronavirus outbreak.

HOM: What did that involve?

JM: It’s involved upscaling our existing public health call centre

in a short space of time, with help from our Principal Partner ITRM [a specialist IT company], allowing us to process an unprecedented number of requests and take calls seven days a week from 8:30am to 6pm. Support provided through the Hub has included enabling residents who are vulnerable or self-isolating to receive food boxes, have prescriptions collected and benefit from befriending calls to keep in touch.

HOM: Health improvement is a core strand of the work you do.

Presumably this has been tricky to carry out during lockdown?

JM: It’s been a new challenge for our health improvement team, given the scale of the need from the community in this period. And, working closely with partners such as Greenwich Co-operative Development Agency (GCDA),

there have been over 66,000 calls, more than 7,000 referrals, and 2,900 food boxes delivered.

On top of that, existing health improvement programmes such as Stop Smoking and the Extra Time Hub for over 55s have continued online with weekly sessions.

HOM: Similarly, CACT is usually out in the community offering education and youth services to young people, many of whom are from vulnerable backgrounds.

How did you go about connecting with these communities while physical meet-ups were banned?

JM: Young Greenwich, the youth service we deliver on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, has launched a new digital offer with free online youth sessions. There have also been online lockdown parties to engage young people as well as their parents and carers.

Our mentoring programme has carried on over the phone, and our Post-16 Education & Football Academy has held regular isolation sessions to maintain fitness levels and engagement with the educational side of the programme.

HOM: With social distancing restrictions easing, are you offering any of your services in-person again?

JM: We’ve recently restarted a targeted Premier League Kicks Saturday football session with a focus on fitness, passing and shooting, which we’re running in line with FA and government guidelines. This is a diversionary session as part of our crime reduction programme and is initially by invitation only. We’ve worked closely with the council, Premier League and English Football League Trust (EFL) to get things right,

and have split the pitch into four areas with no more than two young people per area and all participants booking in advance so we can ensure guidelines are followed at all times.

We’re also restarting our Upbeats Down’s syndrome training sessions following the same guidelines.

HOM: The last few months have seen your organisation continue your work behind closed doors and in the online sphere. Have there been any positive break-through moments?

JM: The versatility and commitment staff have shown has been exceptional, and I’ve seen first-hand yet again the level of passion there is in the organisation for helping those in need, including through shopping trips [for vulnerable people] and deliveries [of food boxes] around the clock seven days a week. It’s also been great to see staff use digital skills to continue to engage their participants, and to bring forward the launch of our virtual youth offer. There are now online sessions six days a week, including workshops ranging from boxing and dance to sexual health.

For me, a highlight has been receiving a letter from the Mayor of London recognising the achievements of the Community Hub and the rest of our work. The Mayor also praised our mentoring programme, which has continued online in this period, as “one of the standout successes” of the Young Londoners Fund, and this recognition meant a lot to us.

HOM: What will the post-lockdown landscape look like for Charlton Athletic Community Trust? Will

any changes to the way you run be brought in permanently?

JM: It’s hard to say what will change permanently at the moment as so many things are still changing.

At the heart of it, we’ll still be the same organisation committed to empowering communities and changing lives. I expect we’ll retain some of the new virtual, flexible approach to fit in with people’s new ways of living and make sure we can provide as much support as possible to the most vulnerable in our community, making sure we’re doing so in the most appropriate way for each individual.

HO: Finally, what’s CACT most looking forward to about things returning to ‘normal’?

JM: Several of our programmes look to reduce social isolation, and it’s been a challenging time for a number of our participants. While we’ve been able to provide support and help them keep in touch with staff and each other, they do miss seeing each other in person and taking part in particular sports and activities. We saw what it meant to our Down’s syndrome group when staff were able to visit them in person recently while maintaining social distancing, and hope to be able to combine digital engagement with bringing back in-person delivery when it’s safe to do so. Similarly, our staff miss being able to connect with participants in person, and with each other, and I include myself in that.

Bingo’s back – but is it safe to play?

Nationwide chain Mecca Bingo has begun a phased reopening of its 80+ clubs across the UK, with Mecca Eltham Hill among the first to reopen last Saturday, July 4. For many (and stereotypically the elderly), bingo is about far more than linking numbers and winning prizes; it’s a social highlight of the week and a chance to catch up face-to-face with friends in the community.

Following months of living in near or complete isolation, many will welcome an opportunity to pick up a dabber and card again, but others may be questioning whether it’s safe to set foot inside a bingo hall – even with social distancing measures in place, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Trinity Laban launches £10,000 fund to support local artists Adopting a digital-first approach, the new ‘Go DigiTL Microgrant scheme’ is able to provide one-off grants of up to £750 to help local musicians and dancers create work in the online sphere. Successful applicants will be able to use the grant to invest in new equipment, professional support services or promotional materials, and will receive practical support to showcase their work online.

The economic impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has cut many of the typical income streams for the performing arts industry. This has forced those working in the industry to adapt, channelling their energies into building new and imaginative platforms to present their work digitally. Keen to support artists taking innovative steps to refocus their energies online, the team at Trinity Laban has launched the £10,000 fund in a bid to relieve some of the financial burden on those adapting to the challenge.

Open to musicians and dancers living in Lewisham and Greenwich, the Go DigiTL Microgrant scheme aims to ‘strengthen artistic relationships between Trinity Laban and the local community’, and ‘promote a conversation around post-pandemic artistic practice’.

“We want to reassure the Mecca Bingo community that we are working together to take every precaution necessary to create a safe environment,” says Alex Cooke, general manager Mecca Eltham Hill.

“Our teams have been working round the clock to ensure we have put in place the highest standards of health and safety measures for our customers and team to be able to continue to enjoy the Mecca fun they know and love.”

Among the measures being introduced are social distancing between tables, clear signage to guide customers around the venue, hand sanitiser stations, a limited capacity on numbers allowed to play at any one time, and contactless playing and paying. To this end, customers will be expected to order food and drink using their mobile or the screen at their bingo table rather than from the bar. Enhanced cleaning services will be also in place, with team members cleaning as they go and all tables, machines and touchpoints receiving

regular cleaning throughout the day.

“We’re also investing in new entertainment formats in our clubs, to give everyone even better experiences,” continues Alex. One such format is a new ‘Mecca Carers’ session, which is designed to support those feeling anxious about returning to normal life. These sessions will take place earlier in the day and operate with reduced customer numbers. The all-new ‘Popingo’, meanwhile, will allow customers to pop in and play for just an hour. Alex is confident now is the right time to reopen Mecca Bingo, pointing out that the team have made over 3,000 phone calls to regular customers to keep them updated on the company’s plans to reopen safely. “We’ve been speaking to our customers throughout lockdown and have had an overwhelming amount of positive feedback about reopening,” he says.

The coronavirus outbreak has been particularly tough on the arts. Already underfunded in many cases, the country’s galleries, performance spaces and creative hubs were forced to close their doors back in March to prevent the spread of Covid-19, which in turn brought about a sudden end to their main revenue streams which were largely reliant on ticket sales and footfall. Four months on, the arts scene is gradually reawakening and tentatively reopening its doors to the public. But many of its artists are continuing to struggle financially, having spent months out of work. Here to help is local music and dance conservatoire Trinity Laban, which has launched a £10,000 fund to support struggling artists, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Joe Townsend, head of CoLab at Trinity Laban and a BA Music Performance & Industry Programme Leader, said: “The Go DigiTL Microgrants offer crucial financial support and mentoring that will allow independent local music and dance artists to realise their ideas and contribute to the fastchanging digital landscape.”

Applications for the scheme are now open and will close on Monday July 13 2020. The awards will be announced on the week commencing July 20.

The GREAT and good of The UK Government has launched a campaign to shine a light on businesses and employees across the country who have responded to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in remarkable ways and are now going back to business. The GREAT Inspirations campaign will recognise companies that have gone above and beyond to continue to operate for their employees, serve their customers and contribute to their local communities. Here are some examples of the many thousands of companies that have proved to be an inspiration.

CASE STUDY QUEEN’S HOTEL ROOMS and pamper packages for NHS workers away from their families, prepping more than 600 meals a week for vulnerable people in the community and projecting light shows every week for Clap for Carers are just some of the things one hotel team has done during the coronavirus outbreak.

The team at the Queens Hotel in Southsea have been working hard since lockdown began in March to support everyone in the community across Portsmouth.

Duty manager Megan Lockyer has been working with the small team who have welcomed more than 30 NHS workers to the hotel, which during the Second World War served as a hospital for recovering servicemen, for a place to rest away from their jobs.

Megan put a post on the Portsmouth Coronavirus Support Group on Facebook asking members to support her idea and it has since taken off with donations pouring in from individuals and businesses.

She said: “I watched the NHS workers come back to the hotel

after a challenging day and I really wanted to let them know how much we appreciate what they are doing.

“I came up with the idea of making hampers for the NHS workers who are currently with us at the hotel.

“I shared my idea with the Facebook group and it was amazing how the community responded.

“The NHS staff had told us how sore their hands were due to constant washing and we were able to include aloe vera hand cream along with items such as face masks, relaxing bath gels, slippers and Easter eggs.”

Staff also worked with Medusa Hairdressing in Southsea to create more hampers which were distributed to key workers in local nursing homes.

The hotel’s managing director Farid Yeganeh said: “I am delighted with the small team we have working at the hotel who have ensured it is clean and safe for our NHS guests.”

More than 7,200 meals have been sent out in lockdown to vulnerable people around the city thanks to a collaboration between the hotel, a collective of voluntary organisations called

The initiative received two £3,000 anonymous donations, as well

as food donations from local businesses including butchers Buckwells. Farid said: “We got an email from the council at the start of lockdown about whether any businesses had any stock that was going out of date. It just snowballed from there really and we teamed up with the Hive to get meals distributed and it means so much that we could help our community.”

Each week for Clap For Carers, projections showing support for the NHS were displayed on the Edwardian era hotel as part of the team’s commitment to supporting local health workers. Farid added: “I have always been aware that we have a really special team working at the hotel and this just underlines it. I look forward to being able to welcome back the whole Queens Hotel team once the lockdown is over.”

CASE STUDY HIGHLAND AUTO CAMPERS WHEN coronavirus started appearing in Inverness, care home manager Victoria Connolly was determined no one who worked or lived there would fall ill.

So she asked the staff of the Isobel Fraser home in Inverness if they’d be prepared to live onsite and was thrilled when 14 said they would.

But then came the problem of where to put them.

The 38-year-old said: “There are a couple of rooms upstairs I could fit six people into. But then I thought, ‘Where am I going to put everyone else?’”

“I have a friend with a campervan so I phoned her and asked if we could use it. She agreed but I needed more so she suggested I hire one.”

Victoria got in touch with Highland Auto Campers whose owner Mark Jarratt, 44, immediately agreed to hire her three vehicles for cost.

While they’d normally charge £130 a night for their practically-new fleet, the care home got them for just £250 each a week.

Mark says: “We’ve only been going two years but earlier this year, things were going well – March was picking up and April and May were fully booked.

“But we only get an eight-month window to make our money because of the tourist season so lockdown came at the worst time for us, the start of our season and was a complete disaster.

“Then around April 14, we got a call from the Isobel Fraser home.

Stories were, by then, beginning to emerge that some care homes had been really badly hit by coronavirus.

“They said that while the home was free of coronavirus, they knew they needed to take steps to keep both staff and residents virus free and by providing accommodation for their staff on site. They wanted to rent three of our vans to do this.

“We were surprised to get the phone call – there are a lot of similar companies in the area – but quite pleased and we immediately agreed to assist in any way that we could.

We just wanted to help.

“It was also a win-win situation for us. The campervans hadn’t been used for a few weeks, they were just sitting quarantined and this was income – not a great deal of income but better than nothing.

“Even though they hadn’t been used for weeks, and one was so new it had never been used, we gave them a thorough clean before driving them over and setting them up.

“The staff and some of the residents were quite excited when we arrived and were looking out of the windows.”

Six care home staff slept in the vans for between three and five weeks.

Manager Victoria said: “They really enjoyed it – they were warm and comfortable. Most have said they’d take them out on holiday!”

The care home, which has 27 residents, hasn’t had a single case of coronavirus. Mark said: “We were really proud to have been able to help. It’s good to do something for the community.

CASE STUDY SHNUGGLE NEWTOWNARDS-BASED company Shnuggle diversified into making PPE when the coronavirus pandemic hit the firm’s core business.

Sinead and Adam Murphy were building the company into a leading name among parents with products such as an air bedside crib, air flow mattress, rocking stand, toddler baths, bath stands and many other creations.

But the growth was interrupted when Covid-19 arrived in the UK, and the country went into lockdown.

Although UK sales remained strong, imports were hit and Shnuggle’s owners turned their attention to designing and creating a face covering that would help save lives.

Adam and Sinead quickly realised that they could help make a difference in the national effort to provide Personal Protective Equipment items. After taking measures needed to sustain the business, including taking advantage of UK Government furlough and business loan schemes, they set

about creating and growing notfor-profit business Hero Shield.

Adam said: “We had seen a few initiatives that had popped up all around the world.

“A lot were printing 3D face shields so we kind of sat down with our head of design who was on furlough and said, ‘can we come up with a design here that we could start producing at rock bottom price and we’d prefer it to be a reusable one rather than a disposable one?’.

“We came up with designs over the course of a weekend,

by Monday we had done 20 different designs and 3D printed them on our prototyping printer and we’d put out a call on LinkedIn to local companies who wanted to get involved and within a very short space of time we had about 20 different businesses all saying, ‘Yep, we can do that bit and we’ll do it free of charge or we’ll do it at cost’.

“We said that we weren’t doing it to make money. We were trying to help the NHS and other care workers so we founded another company which was Hero Shield Ltd and we set it up as not for profit so nobody could take any money

out of it. Alongside that we did a crowdfunder to cover the costs so we raised £35,000 in the end.

“We managed to produce and ship out about 100,000 face shields in about six weeks.”

Adam and Sinead are working to secure charitable status for Hero Shield Ltd, which is still running on a non-profit basis, and is now focussing more on charities and care services that don’t have the funds for whatever PPE they might need to get back up and running.

Sinead said: “The businesses that were actually producing the face shields, we passed the orders to them and they have turned it into more of a commercial venture because we got a massive order from the NHS. “It was worth shy of £1m and we needed to focus back on Shnuggles, so we passed it over to them and they pay a royalty into the Hero Shield charity for every one that they make.”

So having helped the NHS in Northern Ireland, Adam and Sinead are now focused again on their core business – creating and marketing clever products for babies and children.

Five outdoor markets to visit this summer

Greenwich Market Greenwich has housed a market for centuries. Back in 1737, a Royal Charter Market opened with about 60 stallholders.

It grew and grew, before being moved to its current location in 1831, and becoming known as Greenwich Market somewhere along the way. Since then, it's undergone multiple refurbishments and iterations, and been home to thousands of different traders. Today, you can find everything from antiques to fine art, jewellery to street food and freshly baked goods. The market hosts Late events every Friday (though these are currently suspended) and vegan nights once a month, showcasing some of the tastiest plant-based food London has to offer.

Brockley Market Hosted once a week on Saturdays in the leafy car park of Lewisham College, Brockley Market is as much a destination for a family outing and a hub at which to tuck into reasonably priced street food as it is a gorgeous place to shop for fresh groceries. Highlights include Mauritianinspired Lovely Bunch of Coconuts, fried chicken specialists Mother Flipper, a vegan offshoot of the formidable Crosstown doughnuts and Mon’s Cheesemongers.

Crucial system fighting The NHS Test and Trace service brings together testing, contact tracing and outbreak management into an end-to-end service to stop the spread of the virus and help us move out of lockdown. It is central to the UK Government’s coronavirus recovery strategy and will enable life to return to as close to normal as possible, for as many people as possible, in a way that is safe and protects our NHS and social care.

The primary objective of NHS Test and Trace is to control the rate of reproduction, to reduce the spread of the virus and save lives.

DATA ON positive laboratory tests is fed into the contact tracing system, which automatically contacts people with COVID-19 by text or email and invites them to log into the system and provide a range of information about where they have been and who they have met.

People with confirmed COVID-19 will receive a phone call from a health professional if, for instance, they are unable to use the web-based system, they only have a landline, are under 18 years old or have not responded to emails and texts.

If a person with COVID-19 works in or has visited a venue like a care home, school hospital or prison this can be considered for escalation to a Public Health England (PHE) health protection expert.

Once the person with COVID-19 has inputted the details of their any close recent contacts (or a health professional entering details on their behalf) these contacts would themselves receive a text or email notification, explaining the need to self-isolate and inviting them to use the webbased system to receive further information.

Once contacts log-in, it will provide them with appropriate health advice including what to do if they experience symptoms.

to win war against virus CASE STUDY SARAH HARTLE Sarah Hartle had been studying to become a dental hygienist in Manchester for almost three years and on Monday, March 23 she finally qualified and was preparing to start her new career.

But almost immediately England was in lockdown.

The 34-year-old (below) said: “It was literally a few hours after I had qualified. I had been studying since 2018 and it had all been building to this but now I had nothing, no means of earning plus I had two young children who suddenly weren’t at school.”

“Then I got this email through from the professional dental council, asking for healthcare professionals to join the virtual frontline. I had a look and being an NHS Clinical Contact Caseworker

seemed like the perfect job for me.

“I could choose my hours and work from home – so I could do 8am to noon on weekdays and spend the afternoon helping the children with their school work.

Then I’d be able to put in a couple of eight hour shifts at the weekend.”

Sarah says the work has been rewarding and opened her eyes to how all sorts of people can suffer in isolation.

She said: “One lady said to me: ‘Please can you call me every day because this has made me feel so much better’.

“It is just having someone to listen. I can’t understand what they are going through but I can give them a platform, a place where they can vent their frustration or talk about their anxiety and I can tell them everything they are doing is

okay. So much of it is about reassurance.

“One of my first cases was a poor mum whose family had the virus and she seemed to feel so guilty about it. The whole family tested positive for it – the dad, a toddler and a young baby and she was convinced she had given it to all of them and felt so bad about it.

“She was so emotional and it was one of those where she just needed some support. Her partner couldn’t get out of bed. He was so ill and the whole family was really struggling.

“They were all isolating and she just needed someone to listen to her. I told her of course it was okay that the whole family wasn’t having proper meals – and that just grabbing something to keep them going was just fine during this time.

“So not only am I there to talk symptoms and advice on the medical

side, but also the mental side too – offering emotional support.

“And then there is letting them know about the practical support that is out there too – like whether the council can help with the grocery shop.”

Sarah says there is no typical day as a Clinical Contact Caseworker because no two calls are the same. Some need very little assistance and it can be a very quick call but others need to be handled with a lot of time and care.

She said: “On a busy day I may do eight or nine calls in an eight hour shift. You can be done with taking all the details sometimes but then end up spending an extra half an hour on the phone talking about what they are having for tea! It’s that human interaction that people need when they are suddenly in isolation like this.”

NHS contact tracing went live on May 28.

Resident hails Greenwich Community Hub as a “lifesaver”

More than 1,611 prescriptions have been collected as part of the Community Hub

Eltham resident Eileen Glover has thanked Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT), the Royal Borough of Greenwich (RBG) and partners for the support she has received through the Greenwich Community Hub.

CACT’s Rivervale minibus has been used to transport vulnerable people to and from hospital appointments

Eileen, a former Eltham South councillor, found out about the Community Hub when she called RBG to find out about services available following the COVID-19 outbreak in March.

“I expected them to signpost me to some place; I didn’t realise they had an active Hub in operation but, of course, when they did I was very glad that they had and it was really good.”

“I’ve got my second order coming in this week,” she said.

Eileen has also used the Hub to get to and from hospital appointments, being driven by CACT staff in the Rivervale minibus.

Eileen, who is blind, found the shopping service provided by the Hub very useful, as she described not being able to order online through supermarkets at the time.

“That has been absolutely excellent. They’ve been really, really good. They’ve been very caring, very attentive, very helpful and I felt really supported.”

“That was a lifesaver,” explained Eileen. “You did my shopping; you’ve done that for some time now. I found that the shopping list was absolutely excellent, the volunteers were really good.”

The Greenwich Community Hub is open 6 days a week from 8.30am-6pm.

Residents in the Borough who need support during the COVID-19 pandemic can call the Hub on 0800 470 4831.

Eileen explained that the Hub helped give her independence, meaning she didn’t have to rely on neighbours or friends to do her shopping for her.

public notices ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) ABNORMAL LOAD GREENWICH PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Tideway who need to carry out an abnormal load delivery.

2. The Order will come into operation on the 14th July 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take one night for each movement required with 7 days advance warning prior to each movement for a total of 20 movements until June 2021. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in the roads listed in Schedule 1 Whilst a rolling roadblock is in place to move the abnormal load. And preparation works are required in Greenwich Church Street from 17:00 hours on the 14th July 2020 through to 16:00 the following day.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will not be diverted as this is a rolling closure however when the works Reach Greenwich Church Street Traffic will be diverted via Creek Road, Deptford Church Street, Deptford Bridge, Greenwich high and Vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.
