When Studio 338 opened in Greenwich back in 2014, it hit the headlines for being the biggest mega-club in London. Six years on and it’s making the news again, this time for operating as the city’s first fully-fledged, socially-distanced bar. Okay, so the Ibiza-style club itself remains closed, but the venue’s vast outdoor space has been transformed into a beach-style bar fit to save the summer of 2020, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Named Pub Tropicana, the summer pop-up is due to open on Saturday July 4, offering drinks, street food and a place to come and listen to the first live DJ sets you’re likely to have heard since March. The venue will then open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer, with several special events peppering the programme, including: ‘Pubstonbury’, a homage to 2020’s lost summer of festivals; guest DJs to make up for cancelled club nights; and a belated celebration of the Summer Solstice.

“We are very fortunate to have a huge, open air garden,” says Dan Perrin, Studio 338’s music and events director who has overseen the transformation. “This means we can cater for enough people to make it viable and 'create a vibe', but with enough space for social distancing.”

As such, visitors can expect a more low-key, relaxed atmosphere – more pub than mega-club – but with injections of all the things Studio 338 does best, including special

guest DJs playing sets on the venue’s world-class sound system.

Those familiar with the venue might remember Pub Tropicana from the summer of 2017, when the concept first ran. The pop-up was a hit back then, at a time when London was overflowing with outdoor bars.

This summer, with little like it on offer, it’s likely to be a mega-hit.

And luckily for Greenwich locals, it’s right on our doorstep.

At the time of writing, tickets still haven’t been released for the opening of Pub Tropicana on July 4. The team are still waiting for updates from the government on when they can officially open. Even once the green light has been given, the venue will operate at a limited capacity.

Further entertainment…

There will be seating areas but these will be limited to individual groups attending, with plenty of space between each area. Hand sanitiser dispensers will be dotted across the site and two-metre space markers will be in place at any ‘pinch points’, including toilets and bars. The bars themselves – which will serve a full cocktail menu as well as iced specials, wine and beer – stretch long and wide to avoid crowding, and table service will be available, too.

Gamers, too, are in luck: the venue’s very own escape room Flight 338 – which opened last year and is set on a real aeroplane stationed on the grounds – is also reopening, also with new social distancing measures in place. “Capacity will be reduced and the game will be rejigged slightly to make things better spaced,” reassures Dan. “There will be hand sanitiser onboard and extra time between sessions for cleaning. We are also exploring the possibility of UV lights between sessions as another measure.”

What about DJ sets and dancing?

Those keen to jump on board and code-crack their way out will have to buy tickets separately to those for the tropical-themed bar.

Crucially, there will be no dancefloor at Pub Tropicana. But that doesn’t mean dancing is off the cards. ‘There is no danger to people dancing as long as social distancing is respected,’ cautions Dan. ‘Imagine it as a poolside or villa garden party with people dancing and enjoying themselves but spread out, not bunched together like in a club.’

As for who’s spinning the decks, at the time of writing, Dan is keeping his cards close to his chest. ‘I can’t reveal any names yet, but this is London's biggest nightclub. We have friends in some very high places and people are itching to play, so expect some huge names,’ he hints.

As well as music and dancing, visitors to Pub Tropicana this summer can look forward to pub quizzes, underground bingo (aka, not the kind your nan plays on a Tuesday), and open-air comedy nights.

Could Pub Tropicana save the summer?

“We’re hoping to deliver something that brings some light back into people’s lives after a very tough time,” says Dan. “People deserve it; everyone has done so well sticking to lockdown and we hope this is some small reward for that. Above all it will be super safe – Pub Tropicana to the rescue!”

Safety first…

Sure, Pub Tropicana sounds like a lot of fun, but will it be safe to visit or a potential spreading ground for the virus? “It will be one of the only venues [of this kind] to go to in the city [this summer] and this is a responsibility we take very seriously,” says Dan. “We have lots in mind to ensure that the venue is safe and our fun doesn't impact anyone’s safety,” he adds. “The fact it’s all outdoors should really help too.”

Pupils welcomed back Teachers, parents, pupils and support workers at schools across England have been back in the familiar surroundings for the past three weeks.

Boys and girls in nursery, reception, Year 1 and Year 6 joined the children of key CASE STUDY 1 HINCHINGBROOKE AT HINCHINGBROOKE School on the outskirts of Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, principal Mark Patterson has welcomed back Year 10 and Year 12 pupils.

The students, who will be doing their GCSEs and A-levels next year, have returned to a very different school from the one they last saw in March.

The school, which is part of the ACES Academies Trust, is operating on a rota system.

Year 12 has been split into two groups – one group comes in on a Monday, and the other comes in on a Tuesday.

Year 10 has been split into three groups. One group is attending school on Wednesday, another on Thursday and one on a Friday.

Mr Patterson said: “While it’s important for everyone to be back at school, it’s clear you have to prioritise those students who are nearer to their national examinations because they’re the first ones who’ll be tested externally next year.

“Giving them some face-toface time before the summer is crucial. Familiarising them with school again shouldn’t be underestimated.”

It’s straight back into business as usual for the Year 12s, who have been given their

workers in schools from June 1.

Arrangements were also made for pupils in Years 10 and 12 to spend crucial contact time with teachers.

Today we take a look at how things have worked.

Whereas Year 10s will have Personal, Social, Health and Economic lessons on their first day back at school, before going into the usual English, Maths and Science.

With lots of debate surrounding whether children should return to school or not, Mr Patterson is keen to point out that even the best

online learning systems do not compare to being in the classroom with a teacher.

He said: “They’ve been out a long time and remote learning is not nearly as good as faceto-face learning. We know that from research and we know that from our experience as well.”

And while some parents are divided over the prospect of

sending their children back to school, others are clearly in favour of going back to school.

Alesia Dickinson, a parent to two Year 10 students, said: “They’ve got hand sanitising stations, one-way systems, the teachers are making sure everyone is social distancing.

“The communication school provided has reassured parents and I don’t feel any concerns now compared to how I did before.”

Mr Patterson added: “Students are children – it’s very hard for them to motivate themselves in a disciplined way all day every day. That structure is crucial to them all.”

Student Rheeya Makwana, who is 17, said: “I was so happy when I was told we were going back to school because I really enjoy lessons.

“We’ve been having online lessons and voiceover PowerPoints, but it’s not really the same as being in a classroom. The structure was really good and I felt like I learned a lot more being back at school. I came home in such a good mood.

“It was obviously quite different being two metres away from everyone, but they still tried to teach as we normally would so it wasn’t too different other than that.”

FOR STAFF across the Embark Federation’s nine schools in Derbyshire, welcoming Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 pupils back was an event they’d been working towards since lockdown was announced in March.

Embark Trust leader Matthew Crawford said: “It’s lovely to hear the children playing and see schools becoming vibrant again.

“As soon as lockdown began we started work on our Reconnection to Recovery and Resilience programme, a nine-stage support package to welcome children back safely.

“We’re following the government guidelines but in a way that’s fun for the children – for example, we aren’t marking big Xs on the floor to show them where to go but, in some schools, painting snakes in bright colours.

“And we’re not ploughing

straight back into Maths and English – we wanted to meet the children’s needs creatively when they returned before moving into a more formal curriculum.”

Most Embark schools are now back at around 25 to 30 per cent capacity, up from around two per cent when they were just welcoming vulnerable children and those of key workers.

For example, over the past few weeks, Richardson Endowed Primary in Smalley,

Derbyshire, has seen 53 of its 210 pupils walk back through its doors.

Headteacher Kate Mason said: “I get calls every day from parents who want their children to return. The parents all talk to each other so they’re hearing positive stories about children returning and that’s spreading confidence.

“Parents’ biggest concerns are around children’s mental health and wellbeing – they’re worried their children will

Dr Wass says this gives children an opportunity to vital develop social skills.

He said: “That’s when they have to work hard at learning how to be persuasive, how to stand up for themselves. We know that children who are more socially isolated tend to have lower subsequent education attainment, so it’s a really important part of the school experience.”

Dr Wass also points to the importance of stability and routine, which, despite parents’ best efforts, may have been affected during lockdown.

Amelia said: “I wanted to go back to school and see my friend and teachers. I’m a homework monitor so I’m allowed to stay in at break times and help. I check everyone has done their homework but I’m not very strict.”

Sometimes, we find ourselves craving very specific pizzas – the kind you can neither make at home or find in the frozen aisle at your local supermarket. If, for you, this craving is for a ‘pinsa’ – a romanstyle flatbread that’s less heavy than your typical pizza – you’re in luck: because New Cross-based pinsa specialist Papa’s Benito is still making and delivering its goods through lockdown. Its 13-strong pinsa menu includes three gourmet specials, of which the ‘Buffalo’ (a pinsa topped with tomato, fresh buffalo mozzarella, parma ham and black pepper) looks particularly appetising. There’s also starters to consider, including garlic bread (for those with an insatiable capacity for dough), parmigiana or sumptuous-sounding arancini balls.

Those who like to round off their meal with a bit of something sweet will find it in the form of traditional Italian desserts – tiramisu and Sicilian cannoli among them.

Zero Degrees, a microbrewery and restaurant in Blackheath has made on-site production its USP, brewing beers right next to its wood-fired pizza oven. What’s more, having opened in the year 2000 with the same offering, Zerodegrees was a step ahead of the craft beer coupled with pizza zeitgeist which is so popular today. Some pizza restaurants focus on honing the classics while others aim to impress through offering a lengthy menu.

Zerodegrees does the latter, serving some surprising toppings including kedgeree, Peking duck and usually-reserved-for-pasta carbonara. There’s a decent selection of white pizzas, but with fresh tomato sauce a Zero Degrees speciality, I heartily recommend opting for a tomato base. And as for the aforementioned beers? Forget ordering cans, here you can order a five-litre keg of whatever they’ve got brewing.

Veterans on frontline Veterans are providing vital skills across a range of projects to help the country tackle the current coronavirus outbreak.

From helping to build Nightingale Hospitals to delivering essential supplies to those who are shielding, they have helped thousands of people across the country. We take a look at how one such veteran is helping out.

THIS IS not the first time former soldier Joshua Ryder has seen a pandemic close up, having volunteered to visit Sierra Leone during the West African Ebola virus outbreak.

The 30-year-old worked in what was known as a “red zone” in Kerry Town, 19 miles from capital Freetown.

As a member of Royal Army Medical Core, he worked as a combat medical technician, receiving awards for Top Trainee and Adult Learner of the Year.

Joshua said: “We treated patients with confirmed or suspected Ebola. The symptoms are similar to those of malaria and gastroenteritis.

“We triaged and tested patients to determine whether they had these or Ebola.”

The West African outbreak began in 2014, ending in Sierra Leone in 2016.

Two-and-a-half years after the first case was discovered, the outbreak resulted in more than 28,600 cases with 11,325 deaths.

Such was the volatility of the strain – most widespread outbreak of the disease in history – Joshua was only allowed to work in the area for 30 days.

He said: “I loved the country.

It has some beautiful sights and the people are really friendly.

“It was sad to see the

devastation caused by the pandemic. We didn’t only focus on the pandemic. We visited orphanages and helped build something for the country.

“It was moving to see the children who lost their parents to the virus.”

During the coronavirus outbreak he is again working, but the environment could not be more different.

Having left the army in 2018, he is now a trainee nursing associate on a Midlands Partnership NHS Trust acute mental health ward in Stafford.

Joshua, who is father to Tia, aged 12, and her 10-yearold sister Lola, said: “Day to day I am more involved with the physical well-being of the patients – calming them, making physical observations, doing ECGs and bloods.

“I go to Keele University one day a week and am due to start my second year in September.”

It was Joshua’s experiences and expertise in the army that led him to the NHS in general, and mental health in particular.

He said: “I have worked in demanding conditions in various locations around the world. I am adaptable to suit many environments and job roles.”

In the military he saw firsthand soldiers suffering poor mental health. One of

his friends, also serving in the

He said: “I entered the NHS through the Step into Health programme, which has been brilliant.

“I was able to show them what I had done and my

“I have been able to prove myself and have had really positive feedback.

Joshua is helping to treat patients through more difficult times than usual.

“We are doing absolutely brilliantly,” he said. “It would

be abnormal, with all the constant changes, if we did not experience stress and anxiety.

“We have adapted and made changes.

“Here our patients have been brilliant.

“We have got a good team

How military knowledge FORMER SERVICE personnel have helped different communities deal with all manner of problems, making urgent deliveries of food and medicines to vulnerable people while also helping those who are shielding receive what they need.

Many others have helped ensure those who need a test for the virus have been

able to get one by setting up mobile testing sites, allowing them to run smoothly and safely to daily test thousands of people with symptoms.

A lot of this work has required specific skills our veterans have learnt throughout years of military service.

The work of these veterans goes to show the military gives you key skills, transferable to

civilian life – be it healthcare, business or organisation.

Veterans form an important part of our NHS workforce and, throughout COVID-19, many more have come forward to support the continued fight against this pandemic.

He ran a half marathon last year to raise £500 for Mental Health UK. “And this month I am running 100 miles, having so far raised £795 for the same charity through JustGiving,” he said.

Following workshops and consultation with organisations in February and one of the key commitments following a meeting with Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) organisations earlier this month, we have launched an Equality and Equity Charter for review.

The charter sets out pledges to promote equality, diversity and inclusion.

Deptford Cinema creates online community for fellow film buffs March 16: Deptford Cinema goes dark Taking the tough but necessary decision back in March to close the cinema – which launched in 2014 as the borough’s only functioning cinema – seems like a long time ago to Adriana Kytková, one of its core team of volunteers. “We have regular public meetings every Sunday and the last one was dedicated to the question of whether or not to close,” she recalls. “It was very long and intense as we knew this was only the beginning of something completely different.”

Once the decision was reached to shutter the building – complying with the government’s health and safety recommendation but leaving the team unable to seek bursaries or compensation for the loss of business – the team went for a farewell brunch and walk together, the last time they would see one another before lockdown.

The team met, as usual, the following Sunday – this time via Zoom – and the conversation immediately turned to what Deptford Cinema could offer its community online.

Adriana, like many of her colleagues, was positive they could weather the change. “We had quite a few challenges in the past. We almost went through bankruptcy and similar things, but this challenge [was always] going to be big,” she says. “We had to completely restructure how we operate and how we were going to run the cinema.”

Adriana believes the close-knit nature of the community at Deptford Cinema has been vital to the success of working together remotely to reimagine the cinema. “We are lucky we have developed very strong friendships, as this is something that helps the cinema keep going right now,” she says, describing how the team meetings, which were once viewed as an admin-heavy necessity, are now a highlight of the week and a chance for the group to get together over Zoom to bounce ideas off one another.

March 30: Deptford Cinema on Demand launches The weekly Zooms have resulted in a new digital offering: Deptford Cinema on Demand. Every Thursday, the team meet to discuss what films and other content to share online as part of the service, which was initially behind a paywall but has since been made free for audiences to enjoy with a suggested donation.

While less personal than the experience of seeing a film at Deptford Cinema – the knowledgeable team of volunteers are no longer able to introduce the film being watched, for example – there are some positives: “As our cinema is very small this gives us the opportunity to reach larger audiences than usual,” says Adriana.

Independent arts organisations have been hit particularly hard by the lockdown and social distancing measures which remain in place to stop the spread of Covid-19. They relied heavily on ticket sales and extra money made through footfall – two core revenue streams they’ve had to do without for four months now, while rent and other overheads have still needed to be met. Volunteer-run, communityfocused Deptford Cinema is among those hard-hit organisations.

Those in charge are putting on a brave face as they focus on the present, rather than dwelling on whether they’ll be able to open the building in physical form again. For now, they’re channeling their energies into innovative and engaging ways to connect with their community of cinephiles online, writes Holly O’Mahony… site, it’s based on a number of things, but anybody in the team can put titles forward. “We approach filmmakers or people who submit their films, and we contact people who have shown their films at the cinema before.”

There’s also regular online community events – including quizzes and Q&As with filmmakers – which are a chance for the team to keep in touch with the local audience and vice versa.

May 11: The DC journal goes public In May, the team launched a public journal, offering those keen to understand the workings of a movie theatre an insight into how programming choices are made at Deptford Cinema and what goes on behind the scenes to make it happen.

June 9: Deptford Cinema gets a podcast For film buffs and those keen to learn more about the filmmaking process, the team have begun hosting a regular www.weekender.co.uk

Deptford Cinema Podcast. Recorded on Zoom, the podcast features guest speakers and themed episodes, with ideas so far including: exploring Star Wars (how one canon and shared story spans multiple films, comics, books and games, and is enjoyed across multiple generations); and a discussion on what those aged 15 or younger think makes a good film.

Finances and the future of independent cinema Creating a free-to-enjoy digital offering is certainly a service to the community, but it won’t pay the bills. While working hard to run the digital platform, the team – like many others behind arts organisations – are continuing to apply for grants and appeal for donations, but Adriana admits the future is looking uncertain. At the same time, independent cinemas have never been more important.

“Independent cinemas play a big role in giving space to new filmmakers and independent films,” she says.

At the time of writing, Cineworld, the second largest cinema chain in the world, is looking to reopen on July 10 – albeit with socially distanced seating and staggered start times in place. But for many independent venues, operating at a smaller capacity would mean running the venue at a loss. “Socially-distanced screenings are not possible for us.

We have so few seats, so it wouldn't cover the licenses,” Adriana explains.

“We just hope cinemas will not have to close as that would be terrible [but] there needs to be bigger help

from the government,” she says.

“We are looking into the options to do some screenings outside in public spaces, but it is hard to tell what is going to be possible. Some days are more positive and we believe we are going to be ok, and some days feel like it is going to be impossible. We have to try, as people are always going to love films.”

The Enderbys

History Such uses of chemical products still under development in the 1830s shows how open the Enderby brothers were to innovation and the new ideas about chemistry and its development.

In 1837 William Cooke, who was the early pioneer of the telegraph asked Enderby Brothers to help develop insulated ropes for telegraph cables.

In the same year he set up the first experimental telegraph signalling system on the railway at Camden Town. It is not known if his request for help from Enderbys was ever developed - but it was the shape of things to come.

This younger generation of Enderbys had money and leisure and many ideas beyond rope and canvas manufacture. Charles Enderby was one of the founders of the Royal Geographical. Enderby crews went to the Southern Oceans and in the course of their travels made many important discoveries. Their ships became identified with Antarctic exploration and the stories of the explorers with their, sometimes harrowing, adventures make exciting reading. They named the new lands which they discovered ‘Adelaide Island’ after Queen Adelaide, ‘Mount William’, after William IV and, of course, ‘Enderby Land’.

Nevertheless the business was gradually failing

Enderby Wharf was named for the Enderby family who used the area for a rope and canvass factory over 30 or so years in the mid-19th century. A lot has been written about them and their ownership of vessels engaged in the mass slaughter of whales but the role of the family in Greenwich social and political life, and also their later role in the exploration of Antarctica is often overlooked. So who were they?

Mary Mills Samuel Enderby had bought a house in Greenwich in 1758 but his home was in the City of London and his business was probably in the Borough. His family may have owned a Bermondsey tannery but later he was an ‘oil and white lead’ with a works in Loman Street,Southwark. As someone in the ‘oil and Russia’ trade, he may have been processing oil for street lighting or soap and thus obtained mutton fat from the Baltic and oil from whales slaughtered at sea. He married an Elizabeth Buxton daughter of oil merchant with whom he went into partnership, Elizabeth’s family were ship owners and initially they took goods to America colonists and returned with whale oil. As the business prospered the family moved to more upmarket accommodation in Greenwich. He may have been involved in the transport of convicts to Australia and as whales were hunted almost to extinction he was involved in the Southern Whale Fishery where they were still plentiful. By 1790 he was a rich man with sixty-eight whaling ships.

Samuel’s sons Charles, Samuel and George all became partners and they continued with the business after his death in 1797. They all lived around the area in the nicer bits of Greenwich and Blackheath.

In the 1790s his son, Samuel, Jnr. lived in a large and impressive house on Crooms Hill. His mother lived on Blackheath and

family members were active in local good causes, commissioners and trustees for local services, and maybe tried not to think too much about the dirty trade on which their wealth depended. One daughter married a Henry Gordon, and her son Charles George was to become famous as General Gordon of Khartoum.

Samuel, the last of the brothers, died in 1829 and he left the business to his three sons Charles, George and Henry.

Their most famous ship was the ‘Samuel Enderby. For her first voyage an experimental rot proofing was used.

This was Kyan’s extremely poisonous sublimate solution, more usually used as a treatment for syphilis. As a result there were some problems with nausea.

On 8 March 1845, a devastating fire at Enderby Wharf put an end to the family’s involvement in the sail and rope-making business. The factory’s own fire engine fought the blaze joined by two from the Parish, another from the Royal Dockyard and one from the London Fire Brigade Establishment. A detachment of Royal Marines was sent to help but there was never very much hope of saving the ropewalk. By the next morning all that remained were the ‘lofty walls’ of the factory - and they were blown down by the high winds in the next few days. It was said in the Kentish Mercury that the fire was either ‘spontaneous combustion’ or that it was ‘wilfully raised by some incendiary’.

A small house which may have been on the riverside was also destroyed and by June 1845, building work began on a new riverside house for Charles Enderby possibly on the foundations of the old

house. The new house incorporated an unusual ‘Octagon Room’ on the first floor of the north-west corner with an angled bay window and river views. This building is Enderby House which still stands on the river bank. Charles entertained the rich and famous here. He had a number of ‘curiosities’ including a Tudor bedstead (which may perhaps be the bedstead now in Glasgow’s’ Burrell collection) and a stuffed ‘parson bird’ from New Zealand, which, when alive, had been a pet.

The Enderbys were part of that circle of merchants with strong government and establishment links - the same people who ran Morden College and the East India Company. Exploration was an expensive business: in theory, it was undertaken to discover new areas for whale fishing but this trade was soon in decline as gas lighting replaced oil, and whales became scarcer.

In 1847 Charles Enderby got a concession to set up a whaling station in the Auckland Islands in Antarctica, the ‘Southern Whale Fishery’. It was a short lived and unsuccessful venture in which he, and other members of his family, lost a lot of money and the brothers died in relative poverty.

Nevertheless the manufacture of rope at Enderby Wharf had started something and that was to be in cables. There was in fact a business which had begun slightly down river at Morden Wharf which was looking for a vacant site to which they could expand.

It was these sons - the grandsons of Samuel Enderby - who bought the Greenwich riverside site including the rope walk, maybe in an attempt to change the nature of the trade. It was all about rope and canvass.

The factory consisted of two large waterside buildings where spinning machinery and looms were used to make canvas. On site were rooms to spin hemp and a flax mill. Outside was a building for a steam engine and boiler, houses for the foremen, stables, a smithy, and joinery. There was a ‘pitch house’ and the brothers negotiated seven-year contracts with the gas companies for a supply of tar. There was also a project with the City of London Gas Company for making ‘composition,’ usually a coal tar based mortar used by the cheaper end of the building trade. In 1837 Michael Faraday himself gave a lecture in 1837 on the use of naphtha as a solvent for rubber and how it could be applied to new types of rope and cable. www.weekender.co.uk

Summer football courses return on 6 July

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) will be delivering its summer football courses following government guidelines from Monday 6 July.

There will be five young people per group with one CACT coach

The courses have been adapted in line with social distancing regulations and will provide a safe environment for young people aged 4-15 to take part in throughout the summer.

Initially, all sessions will take place on CACT’s community pitches at the Charlton Athletic Training Ground in New Eltham. Courses may expand to other venues later this summer.

The pitch will be split into six areas to ensure social distancing is maintained with five young people per area, with controlled entry and exits.

CACT’s Premier League Kicks programme returned on 13 June on its community pitches, with similar social distancing guidelines in place to ensure the safety of all young people and staff.

Bradley Marshall, CACT’s Senior Football & Sports Development Officer, said: “CACT coaching staff are prepared and procedures have been put in place to follow government and FA guidelines.

“Coaches will be delivering technique

and skill-based sessions, there will be no match or game-based activities.

“We are very much looking forward to getting back on the pitch delivering our popular football holiday courses. There will be prizes and competitions for every session.”

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, CACT has encouraged young people to keep active at home by providing daily challenges for them to take part in.

With the easing of the lockdown, the adapted return of the holiday football courses will allow young people to continue to stay active during the summer holidays by physically distancing and socially connecting.

Sessions will run from Monday to Friday and last two hours per block, with bookings available in 9.30am, 12.30pm or 3.30pm slots.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
