Blackheath Farmers’ Market turns 20 this year – a milestone it will be celebrating on Sunday June 28. Since the year 2000, the market has been providing the local community with fresh fruit and veg, raw milk, Norfolk-caught brown shrimps and seasonal produce throughout the year – from wild garlic in March to asparagus in May and turkeys in December. Based in Blackheath Station car park, the market opens every Sunday come rain, shine... or virus. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Mark Handley, managing director of London Farmers’ Markets, to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Blackheath Farmers Market turns 20 this year.

Let’s start by reflecting back on the year 2000 when it all began…

Mark Handley: We were looking to expand from just three markets in London [the original was set up in Islington 1999] and came across the forecourt of Blackheath Conservatoire one day when passing through the area. We launched with around 15 stalls, but it soon became apparent that the conservatoire was just too small to cope with demand and it was very difficult to unload the vans. The station car park was seen as an alternative, as it is largely unused on Sundays. Network Rail gave us the green light to relocate.

HOM: Have any stalls or traders been with the market since the beginning?

MH: Perry Court Farm and Chegworth Valley Farm from Kent were both there at the start, and are still trading on the market today selling their homegrown fruit and vegetables.

Other stalls have come and gone over the years, but we usually have at least 30 stalls each week selling everything from meat and fish to cheese, plants, flowers, bread, cakes and even craft beer!

HOM: Before the virus spread, how were you planning on

marking the 20th anniversary of Blackheath Farmers’ Market?

MH: We normally have a big cake and a day of childrens’ activities, but these will be postponed until social distancing measures have been removed.

HOM: How will you mark the occasion instead?

MH: For now, we plan to mark it by continuing to stay open every Sunday to support the small food producers and to offer an essential service to the customers who come to the market, which reduces their need to travel out of the area to supermarkets.

HOM: How have the farmers’ markets coped these last few months with the loss of business as a result of the lockdown?

MH: Like other food retailers, our markets have remained open throughout the last few months with the government’s permission. Some stalls took a break as they needed to look after relatives or had huge demand at their farm shops, but most are now back trading as normal.

By introducing social distancing measures, shoppers have been telling us they feel safer shopping outdoors in the fresh air and were very grateful we stayed open so they could

avoid travelling to supermarkets.

HOM: What new measures are in place across London Farmers’ Markets to ensure the safety of traders and shoppers?

MH: We currently have extra stewards at the market to ensure that all customers observe a twometre distance from one another.

Stalls have been spread out and we monitor customer numbers closely to ensure there are never too many people on site. Stalls are taking extra hygiene precautions and bringing hand sanitiser to the market. The market has been visited by the police who are happy with the measures in place, and who come to buy their breakfast and eggs regularly!

HOM: Does Blackheath Farmers Market in particular look any different?

MH: Yes, the stalls are spread out across the car park and like other food stores, there are sometimes

queues for the stalls – the fish stall is particularly popular. Currently, we are asking people to shop alone to make room for everyone in the market and to stop it becoming too crowded. If you need to bring young children or are vulnerable and need help with your shopping that’s fine, but no big groups are allowed in and we ask couples to take it in turns. We also request that customers do not enter the car park while we set up to help everyone social distance and form a queue outside before 10am HOM: Finally, what fresh, seasonal produce should shoppers look out for at this time of year?

MH: Cherries! We also urge everyone to support local retailers in the coming months and to ‘keep it local’ where possible.

Are virtual open days the way forward for higher education institutions? Trinity Laban leads the way…

Like all higher education institutions, Trinity Laban closed its doors back in March to comply with the government-imposed social distancing measures. Soon after, it became clear to staff that the open days scheduled for summer would no longer be able to take place. With applications for 2021 entry to the school opening on July 16, they knew they had to come up with an alternative – and fast – to avoid pupils losing interest.

“Since a number of prospective students had already expressed a strong interest in our open days, we did not want to disappoint them,” explains Hannah Dickinson, head of student recruitment and international relations at Trinity Laban. “The virtual open days are a way for us to provide them with an opportunity to experience Trinity Laban’s wonderfully creative environment and engage with our teaching staff in real-time, despite the challenging circumstances we all find ourselves in,” she says, stressing that the school still hopes to host on-campus open days in autumn.

The virtual open days have been designed to replicate the in-person events as closely as possible, with prospective students able

to take building tours, chat to programme leaders and watch classes in action.

“Each event will offer a combination of prerecorded videos and 'live' sessions, with lots of opportunities to ask questions,” reveals Hannah. “The format varies slightly for each event – Dance, Music, and Musical Theatre – and includes chats with alumni, more informal hang-outs with current students, Q&As with programme leaders, and production showcases.”

The school held its first virtual open day event on May 28 – an event for prospective students interested in studying Postgraduate Dance – which, according to Hannah, was a success.

“We were delighted to receive such high interest, with four times as many sign-ups as for our oncampus events,” she beams. “We received really positive feedback, including comments on how enjoyable the experience had been, and how it was great to have the opportunity to talk directly to programme leaders in small group settings.”

The remote location of the event meant that a far more diverse student body was able to sign up. “In addition to participants from the www.weekender.co.uk

With the arrival of summer, it presents a new problem: attracting prospective students. How can the next cohort of students decide if an institution is right for them without walking its halls, meeting its staff and getting a feel of the place?

On the flip side, how will the country’s higher education institutions survive if pupil numbers diminish?

Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance is in the throes of hosting virtual open days for its Music, Dance and Musical Theatre programmes – a chance for pupils to explore the offering without having to take a trip to its Greenwich campus, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Based on the success of the inaugural event, the team have since decided they’ll continue to host at least one virtual event every year going forward.

The next, far greater, hurdle for Trinity Laban to overcome will be reopening with a full programme that allows its students to develop their skills without jeopardising their safety.

This, of course, will be a challenge for all higher education institutions hoping to welcome pupils onto their campuses in autumn, but it will be particularly tough for performing arts schools like Trinity Laban, which rely heavily on physical group work and performing to crowds.

“Transitioning to remote delivery over the last couple of months has been an extraordinary undertaking, demonstrating the dedication of our staff and the adaptability of our

At present, the school is planning to reopen its buildings in September. But just how different will the experience be for its pupils? “Teaching will be via a combination of in-person and virtual methods, so that we can ensure we practice social distancing on campus,” reveals Hannah. “Performance is an integral part of our programmes and we will find innovative ways of presentation, building up across the year as social distancing is relaxed,” she adds.

“We are looking forward to the prospect of getting back into our beautiful buildings in September and welcoming a new cohort of performing artists alongside our returning students for the new academic year. What’s important is to continue the sense of community and to prioritise the safety of our staff and students.”

Support the very best of As we move into the summer months, the UK Government is encouraging us all to support the tireless farmers, fishermen and women who put food on our plates.

We can all do our bit to support the food industry, either by eating vegetables that are currently in season, trying new recipes using seafood caught in UK waters or by taking a summer job on a farm.

Here, we take a look at how everyone can help.

WITH PUBS, restaurants and hotels currently closed, large quantities of local seasonal vegetables and fish landed on our shores are at risk of going to waste.

To ensure this doesn’t happen, the UK Government is looking to inspire the nation to eat more in-season vegetables such as asparagus, cucumbers, mushrooms, salad leaves, courgette, spinach, tomatoes, radishes, beetroot and many others.

Everyone can do their bit to support farmers and get people eating fantastic fresh local food.

As part of the campaign, home cooks across the country asked to share recipes using #SeasonalVeg on social media.

People are also being encouraged to become more seafood-savvy and try seafood species caught in UK waters, such as mussels, crab, mackerel, herring, rainbow trout, hake, coley/saith, monkfish, sole and many others through the Sea For Yourself campaign.

Nearly half of UK adults would buy more seafood if they knew it was caught in UK waters, according to a survey carried out earlier this year for the Sea For Yourself campaign.

suppliers is also being created to make it easy to find a local retailer, local fishmonger and or even fishers who deliver locally.

There are also summer job opportunities available in our farms.

People who are fit, healthy and looking for temporary work are being asked to apply for jobs to support the delivery of the best quality fruit and veg for everyone to enjoy.

She said: “I’m working on one of the iceberg lettuce rigs. I’m staying on site and it’s great really, really enjoying it.

“I was actually travelling in sub-Saharan Africa and I had to come back because of Coronavirus, so I’ve decided to come and help Britain in the need for food.

“It’s a great team atmosphere.

You move with the rig across the field, you have to keep up with the pace that the guys are picking it at – it’s great fun and I’m glad to be doing something useful with my time.

“I would very much recommend it to somebody else.

I’m having a really good time, the people are really nice, and it’s nice to be out in the open air and doing something physical.”

Scott Watson has been growing radishes for G’s Growers in Feltwell, Norfolk, for more than 15 years.

He said: “The UK outdoor salads season is now well under way with lettuce, spring onions and radishes all being harvested on UK farms.

Our radish harvest started at the end of April and we have now been supplying UK grown radishes for over a month.

“The fine weather has meant that we have seen strong demand at the start of the season.

Radishes always sell well when the sun is out and people get going with barbecues, which drives increased salad consumption as main meals.”

Scott said it is important for people to eat produce in season, and eat healthily.

He said: “With the challenges of lockdown it is more important than ever that we try to eat a healthy balanced diet and ensure we are at least trying to get our five portions of fruit and veg per day.

“Radishes are still a relatively niche vegetable, but are really great value and make for a great healthy snack, so we would just encourage everyone to give British radishes a go this summer and think about them as an alternative healthy snack that’s not just beloved of Peter Rabbit!

Get your culture fix online with The Peninsulist Presents While concerts are cancelled, restaurants are closed and cinema trips have been reduced to warm, fuzzy memories of the past, there’s still culture to be found if you know where to look. The ongoing push to see Greenwich Peninsula become a cultural hub and launch as a Design District by autumn 2020 has seen the team behind it create The Peninsulist Presents, a free digital arts and entertainment platform that hosts ‘Culture Wednesdays’ (offering talks, art and even foodie events), and ‘Friday Sessions’ (a chance to stream live gigs and movies), writes Holly O’Mahony…

“We really wanted to keep topical, cultural discourses going throughout lockdown between creative practitioners and our local community,” says Kaia Charles, Cultural Projects Manager at NOW Gallery & Greenwich Peninsula.

Ordinarily, the team puts on a summer programme of outdoor cinema screenings, pop-up festivities and an annual jazz weekend. Knowing that none of these events could go ahead in physical form this year, they began looking for ways to create a similar experience online.

Peninsulist’s Instagram at 12pm, when you’ll be able to take part in a series of creative workshops. The programme includes a fragrance note tutorial from Maya Nije Perfumes; a chance to knit your own Pusheen cat with Stitch & Story; and interactive cooking experiences with feminist foodie duo Mam Sham.

Of the latter, Kaia says: “They will be bringing ‘The Real Housewives of Quarantine’ to The Peninsulist Presents. Expect lots of laughter while cooking, eating and competing.”

“We felt a virtual event series hosted on The Peninsulist’s digital channels (@ThePeninsulist), was the perfect opportunity to bring together our community and celebrate this spirit when we can’t do so physically,” explains Kaia.

The series also includes a chance to sit in on a session with OKHA: The Queer and Black Book Club (June 24, 7pm). With the death of George Floyd forcing us to confront the injustices experienced by people of colour, this opportunity to educate ourselves through literature has never felt more timely.

The event sees OKHA curator Khloe Bailey joining Niellah Arboine, lifestyle editor at BAME magazine gal-dem, to discuss I Will not be Erased, a book produced by gal-dem’s editorial team. “The book is available to download via Audible and we are giving away five paperback copies to ticket holders,” says Kaia. “There will also be a ‘show and tell’ session, where the audience will be encouraged to bring a personal item inspired by the book.”

Meanwhile, for those with a sweet tooth, a highlight of the programme will be a workshop led by ice cream connoisseurs Bompas & Parr (July 15, 12pm and 5pm), known for adding a bit of magic to everything they

do. “We’re extremely excited to be working with Bompas & Parr this summer,” grins Kaia. “The team has worked on some outstanding and spectacular projects to date with some amazing partners, and we really can’t wait for them to host their interactive and theatrical workshops on The Peninsulist’s channels for people to get involved with.”

‘Friday Sessions’, meanwhile, are a chance to enjoy a live concert or movie night without leaving your sofa. Hosted on The Peninsulist’s digital channels, the sessions include performances from Swedish singer Fatima (August 14, 7pm) and American composer Dan Deacon (July 3, 7pm).

Movie nights come courtesy of a partnership with Bounce Cinema and will be a chance to dip into the BFI archives. The first screening, on June 26 at 7pm, is Young Soul Rebels, a 1991 British coming-ofage film directed by Isaac Julien.

“While the last few months have been challenging for so many and it’s still so very difficult being separated from loved ones, we really hope that through The Peninsulist Presents, people can continue to enjoy shared cultural experiences together, [and that it] provides a little escapism and hopefully a smile or two,” says Kaia.

This is something we are determined to change and the launch of our Black Lives Matter mural in General Gordon Square, Woolwich, is our visible commitment to making sure we are not sweeping the disadvantages faced by black residents and all marginalised communities under the carpet.

Leader of the Council Danny Thorpe said: “As a borough, we have seen first-hand the truly devastating impact racism can have on our communities.

One in five of our residents are from Black backgrounds and in light of recent events, including the Black Lives Matter protests across the globe, we want to strongly reaffirm our commitment to eradicating racism and discrimination in our society.”

The crossings were extremely popular last year and we received lots of positive comments and feedback from our residents. The focus of Brockley eatery Parlez is, ordinarily, on creating a sense of old-worldly community within its hip, white-washed walls. While its customers have had to retreat back inside their doors, the duo behind Parlez – two pals from south London – are continuing to offer their brunch menu as a home delivery service via Deliveroo. Choose from the likes of French toast with bacon and maple syrup; full breakfasts (either meat or veggie) and Parlez’s signature fried chicken. Dinners, meanwhile, come courtesy of south London pop-up Baba G’s, which takes over the Parlez kitchen most evenings to dish out its exquisite bhangra burgers. Whatever you order, know that it comes delivered with a desire to welcome you into the kind of local community often lacking in a big anonymous city like London.

Here to satisfy your doughy cravings is BOnA Sourdough, a top-notch pizzeria based in Forest Hill. The restaurant specialises in wood-fired, Neapolitan-style sourdough bases commended for their airy, chewy texture.

The menu is short and sweet – just nine pizzas long – and includes a weekly special veg pizza, two white pizzas (topped either with truffle or Sardinian fennel sausage), and build-your-own options for vegans. The School Streets programme is being expanded rapidly to help achieve this.

A School Street means the road outside a school is closed to motor vehicles at drop-off and pick-up times, which makes it safer and less polluted for children and parents walking, cycling and scooting to school. This is an important part of cleaning up our air - particularly where it affects children.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is open for business Monday 15 June was a big day for the retail sector. After eleven weeks of being unable to open their doors, many high street shops were back in business. Here in Royal Greenwich we’ve been working hard to help businesses reopen safely.

As well as the four existing School Streets, three new ones are being created at Charlton Manor, Invicta and Wyborne primary schools, which will encourage safe, active and sustainable travel to school.

We’ve produced ‘Shop safe’ packs containing floor graphics, posters, queueing tape and window stickers to reassure shoppers that it’s safe to return to our high streets. The packs were given out at business advice surgeries held in our seven town centres and more than 600 have now been distributed.

We are continuing to engage with schools to create more School Streets in the borough.

Give ‘em enough rope

There are a lot of histories at Enderby Wharf and we will be here for some time yet. The earliest activity we know of is the gunpowder depot - described last week – and eventually we will reach the Enderbys and the cables factory, but in between is something else which we know much less about. That is what happened at Enderby Wharf between the power magazine closing in 1770 and the Enderbys moving in in 1830 – that’s 60 years which is a long long time for nothing to happen.

Mary Mills 1817 Littlewood was bankrupt and in the Fleet Prison because of debt. He explained that he had "made over the rope-walk to a person named Young, but received nothing for it, only a promise of his situation as foreman, with a salary of £250 per annum". It turned out that he had been sacked

by Mr. Young for stealing hemp’.

The site of the gunpowder works is usually shown in official documents and maps as ‘Crown Land’ – owned by the State, rather than a private landowner. It is said to have been leased to Henry Vansittart who then bought the site in 1803. Who was he? There were several distinguished Vansittarts at that time and several of them were called Henry. The most famous Henry Vansittart was Governor of Bengal, but he died - lost at sea - in 1770 so it can’t be him.

One of his sons and a nephew were also ‘Henry’ – so, one of them maybe.

There is also a lease for part of Dog Kennel Field to a Henry Vansittart.

That was the area now covered by Pelton Road and in 1770 Vansittart had a ‘whiter’s house’ there – does this refer to a cloth bleaching business At that time to get new cloth to a bright white it would be soaked in a bleaching agent and then left out in sunlight to ‘whiten’. What they used as the bleach was often ‘vitriol’ – what we call sulphuric acid. So –it might be of interest to learn that in 1800 the old gunpowder magazine site was leased to a George Moor for use 'as vitriol works' and that could be the same a George Moor who was already involved with a copperas works in Deptford - in at that time the manufacture of ‘vitriol’ is associated with that of copperas. So, was Vansittart and others involved in a bleach works which was also associated with an attempt to make copperas here on the Peninsula riverside?

On some old maps a building on what would now be Enderby Wharf is marked ‘Salution House’ This has been seen by most people as misspelt ‘Salutation House’ – which could be the name of a pub. But why build a pub in the middle of a field rather than on the river bank or the road?

It could just as well be a building connected with a chemical works –‘salution’ does it mean … ‘solution’.

He began a legal case against Young and it emerged that by then he was a prisoner again, this time in Horsemonger Lane Jail in Southwark, for operating an illicit liquor still and for selling the resulting liquor in the prison.

He appeared to have a close knowledge of several London prisons. Once out of gaol he had "turned his attention to a private still in Kentish Town, and passed by the name of Smith". When that was discovered by the Excise he set up another still at Leytonstone, and then one at Camberwell, changing his name to Cross, and by the time this was discovered he had opened yet another still in Bethnal-Green.

here was owned by Lewis Price & Co., a vitriol merchant based in Tooley Street, Southwark. It seems likely that this bleaching/ copperas business lasted until the Enderby family took over the site.

However, copperas and bleach were not the only things here - the future was in rope. This is a large site and there is no reason why both the bleach and the rope works could not have both been here at the same time.

In Woolwich there was a huge rope walk. Rope is essential for work with ships and rope factories are called “rope walks” and they show up on old maps as long thin works. At Chatham Dockyard Museum there is an early mechanized ropewalk still at work – www.weekender.co.uk

go and see, it’s amazing! However, in the late 18th century rope walks were not mechanized and rope makers literally walked. They worked walking backwards with something like 40 lbs of fibre round their waists which they twisted with their fingers to make the rope - and in every working day one would walk more than 20 miles. The Woolwich Ropeyard had been set up under Elizabeth I, to supply rope to warships. It was the first naval ropeyard in the country – and so was an early state industry undertaken through a contractor.

The rope walk itself was a covered building running the length of what is now Beresford Street. By the 17th century it had a grand entrance in the High Street and adjacent to it were some very nice houses for the

master ropemaker and his clerk. In 1800 the clerk was a John Hounson.

Around 1800 a rope walk was built in Greenwich on the site which is now Enderby Wharf. In the records a John Hounson is listed as the owner and my guess is that this is the same man who had been the Clerk in Woolwich - and perhaps he had decided to set up his own business.

By 1808 however Hounson had gone and a James Littlewood was there with a ‘rope house, rope walk, houses and wharf’. Littlewood later described how he had borrowed £40 from friends in order to take the rope walk on “and, he said, where he should have succeeded, had not a conspiracy been formed to take it out of his hands". By

The Excise began a case against him saying that he had supplied the landlord of the Seven Stars in Whitechapel with a quantity of spirits. At the trial he admitted that he also used the name of Smith and over the past three or four months had manufactured three or four hundred gallons of spirits – supplied cheap to London pubs.

However, Mr. Young, who is otherwise unknown, kept the rope works and ran it for the next ten or so years.

The rope works was purchased in 1830 by the Enderby brothers, Charles, George and Henry. Over the next few years they developed the site by adding a sail making works and a hemp factory. The rope walk remained on site and can be seen marked on maps of the telegraph cable works into the 20th century. Its length could even still be made out from the Greenwich riverside path until 2014 or so but the layout of Barratt’s high rise developments have now obliterated it.

There’s no denying that coronavirus has affected everyone. But it’s hit some people in our community more than others.

Staff and volunteers at Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) have been working hard to be there for the most vulnerable in our community over the last few months.

Phillip Hunnisett said: "My aunt, who is almost 90 years old and lives in Eltham, was concerned how she would buy her food. CACT came to the rescue and for the last 2+ weeks her food purchases have been delivered by volunteers. Thank you."

Dorothy Walker said: “As soon as I went through the door [to CACT’s Extra Time Hub], I was greeted by lovely people who made me feel very welcome. They do so many activities! Since the lockdown, no-one can go to the hub any more but they’ve rung me every week to check if I’m ok and ask if there’s anything I need, which I think is absolutely marvellous”.

Jacqueline, 75, who is from Mottingham, said: “She phones asking how I am, what I’ve been doing & that sort of thing. We’re on the phone for about 20 minutes. I’m on the shielded patients list so haven’t been able to leave the house.”
