A pupil at Blackheath High Junior School (BHS) has designed a range of t-shirts and tote bags to raise money for the NHS Charities Together during the coronavirus pandemic.

Eleven-year-old Emma Harris, a year six pupil at BHS, was inspired by the rainbows in the windows of houses in her local area, and used this motif as inspiration for her design, writes Holly O’Mahony…

With four Doctors in the family and a recently retired GP grandmother, Emma knew she wanted to use her time at home to do something positive to support the NHS staff working on the frontline. A keen art pupil, Emma decided to put her creativity to good use. “Everyone in my school was supporting the NHS so I decided to design t-shirts and tote bags to respect our key workers,” she says.

Emma’s chosen design for the t-shirts features three BHS pupils inside a rainbow – the symbol of hope and gratitude to the NHS during the pandemic – and the logo: BHS for NHS. “I tried some other designs first but I chose the rainbow because people are putting rainbows in their windows to support the NHS and my school is also supporting the NHS,” she says.

The entrepreneurial pupil chose to print the design on t-shirts and bags because both are long-lasting and reusable, and therefore a chance for people to keep showing their support.

After finding a suitable printing company – which itself was a challenge with so many services closed during the pandemic – Emma set about spreading the word around her school. “I told my form teacher who told our head teacher, and she got in touch with some

newspapers and spread the word on social media,” Emma explains.

The t-shirts and bags, which range from £12 – £19 in price, have been a hit among pupils and staff at the school. “Lots of girls and teachers have bought one already and I'm proud that our school is showing our support,” says Emma, who has already raised an impressive £200 for NHS Charities Together, more than doubling her target of £95.

Mrs Sarah Skevington, head teacher at Blackheath High Junior School, said: “Everyone at Blackheath High is so very proud of Emma. She has gone above and beyond, using her creativity and entrepreneurial spirit to raise money for NHS staff and volunteers … It is wonderful to see the exciting ways our students have

supported the community and done all they can to show support to the NHS and our key workers, especially during these unprecedented times.”

Emma has already followed her BHS for NHS range with a collection of quarantine birthday t-shirts, designed and personalised for pupils who are celebrating their birthday away from friends and loved ones.

“I really enjoy doing it and I hope to raise more money for the NHS,” says Emma.

Support the very best of As we move into the summer months, the UK Government is encouraging us all to support the tireless farmers, fishermen and women who put food on our plates.

We can all do our bit to support the food industry, either by eating vegetables that are currently in season, trying new recipes using seafood caught in UK waters or by taking a summer job on a farm.

Here, we take a look at how everyone can help.

WITH PUBS, restaurants and hotels currently closed, large quantities of local seasonal vegetables and fish landed on our shores are at risk of going to waste.

To ensure this doesn’t happen, the UK Government is looking to inspire the nation to eat more in-season vegetables such as asparagus, cucumbers, mushrooms, salad leaves, courgette, spinach, tomatoes, radishes, beetroot and many others.

Everyone can do their bit to support farmers and get people eating fantastic fresh local food.

As part of the campaign, home cooks across the country asked to share recipes using #SeasonalVeg on social media.

People are also being encouraged to become more seafood-savvy and try seafood species caught in UK waters, such as mussels, crab, mackerel, herring, rainbow trout, hake, coley/saith, monkfish, sole and many others through the Sea For Yourself campaign.

Nearly half of UK adults would buy more seafood if they knew it was caught in UK waters, according to a survey carried out earlier this year for the Sea For Yourself campaign.

suppliers is also being created to make it easy to find a local retailer, local fishmonger and or even fishers who deliver locally.

There are also summer job opportunities available in our farms.

People who are fit, healthy and looking for temporary work are being asked to apply for jobs to support the delivery of the best quality fruit and veg for everyone to enjoy.

She said: “I’m working on one of the iceberg lettuce rigs. I’m staying on site and it’s great really, really enjoying it.

“I was actually travelling in sub-Saharan Africa and I had to come back because of Coronavirus, so I’ve decided to come and help Britain in the need for food.

“It’s a great team atmosphere.

You move with the rig across the field, you have to keep up with the pace that the guys are picking it at – it’s great fun and I’m glad to be doing something useful with my time.

“I would very much recommend it to somebody else.

I’m having a really good time, the people are really nice, and it’s nice to be out in the open air and doing something physical.”

Furloughed workers, whose contracts allow them to, can take up seasonal work while

continuing to receive their furloughed wage.

Scott Watson has been growing radishes for G’s Growers in Feltwell, Norfolk, for more than 15 years.

He said: “The UK outdoor salads season is now well under way with lettuce, spring onions and radishes all being harvested on UK farms.

Our radish harvest started at the end of April and we have now been supplying UK grown radishes for over a month.

“The fine weather has meant that we have seen strong demand at the start of the season.

Radishes always sell well when the sun is out and people get going with barbecues, which drives increased salad consumption as main meals.”

Scott said it is important for people to eat produce in season, and eat healthily.

He said: “With the challenges of lockdown it is more important than ever that we try to eat a healthy balanced diet and ensure we are at least trying to get our five portions of fruit and veg per day.

“Radishes are still a relatively niche vegetable, but are really great value and make for a great healthy snack, so we would just encourage everyone to give British radishes a go this summer and think about them as an alternative healthy snack that’s not just beloved of Peter Rabbit!

What can Greenwich’s museums teach your kids this summer?

Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG) – the body which incorporates Cutty Sark, the Queen’s House, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory – has been busy this spring. Sure, the doors to its physical institutions have remained closed, its hallowed halls darkened, but behind closed doors, a vast amount of planning, strategising and digitising has taken place, to bring the public – particularly school-aged children – access to the museum’s learning resources online, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Browse the ‘discover more’ section of the RMG website and you can learn about the summer solstice, watch a tutorial on making quilled ships or building a theatre, and discover how to make your own sock puppet. Older kids can swat up on stars in the night sky, write a compelling story or even learn to code.

You can either learn from pre-recorded (or written) material, or book onto interactive learning sessions via Zoom, through which the museums’ learning teams cover everything from the stories of explorers (aimed at children) to drawing sessions for adults.

Demand is high. When the team at the Royal Observatory launched an online planetarium show at the end of May, it booked up immediately, prompting the decision to make the shows a weekly event.

All sessions are free to book and open to 60 participants at one time. What’s more, thanks to the classes taking place in the virtual sphere, participants across the UK and even further afield have been enjoying the resources, meaning you could end up learning alongside a student in Japan or the US. “The great advantage of digital is we have had the ability to reach out to many more people across the country and engage people who have not been able to visit our site before,” says Sarah Lockwood, head of learning and interpretation at Royal Museums Greenwich.

hard-hitting reality of the museums having to close to help stop the spread of Covid-19.

“As an organisation dedicated to welcoming communities, and inspiring creativity and learning, [the official closure on March 19] was an incredibly sad day for all of us,” recalls Sarah. “Having built long-lasting relationships with our stakeholders and the communities we work with, we wanted to do all we could to keep engagement with the collections around art, history and science alive,” she says.

“Taking our collections and activities online seemed like a clear way to achieve this.”

A quick scan of the museums’ online offering will confirm learning has clearly been made the priority over, say, entertaining. “We looked at how we could be most helpful to people through the lockdown,” Sarah explains. “Parents and children were confined to their homes, work and home schooling conflated into one space, both needing attention at the same time,” she says.

With many people feeling isolated in the present and anxious about the future, the team at RMG felt strongly that learning would help provide a distraction and form part of a new routine. “Learning is the most empowering of all human behaviours,” affirms Sarah. “We needed to provide some creative thinking for people, so we quickly turned our physical programme around as best we could, to a new virtual form of engagement.”

materials – there’s a whole section on crafts that can be made with tin foil, for example – ensuring all families feel able to engage with them. “We wanted these activities to be as inclusive as possible,” says Sarah. “We had to assume people weren’t able to go outside and source materials for the craft workshops, so we needed to think carefully about which household objects could be transformed in art workshops or easily used in science experiments,” she adds.

Do museums have a certain level of responsibility – or duty, even – to try and engage with the public in a time of crisis like this? “Museums have an important role to play as centres for learning.

The collections help us make sense of the world and our shared cultural heritage,” explains Sarah.

“In the same way a trip to a museum provides a new, immersive learning environment, we aim to continue providing resources, curriculum support and skills development through off-site experiences,” she says. “We knew we needed to find ways to continue to connect people, promote togetherness and reassure them they are still part of a bigger society whilst living in isolation.”

Those who visited one of Greenwich’s museums in the months leading up to their closure might recognise certain activities and workshops from the online offering. “To make sure we reached people as quickly as possible, we used as many of our existing activities as we could,” explains Sarah. “Lockdown happened just before two weeks of school holidays, and we had lots of on-site activities planned for families to enjoy, so our fabulous workshop facilitators got to work adapting these physical sessions into digital ones,” she says.

“We have been creating resources for learning over a number of years and were able to mobilise a series of resources that have been created working in collaboration with creative practitioners, educators and scientists,” Sarah continues. It’s these former museum experiences that have now been adapted into home-learning resources. “As the boundaries between home and school are now blurred, we wanted to reposition our schools’ resources for parents to use.”

Video content, on the other hand, is not marked by key stage level – something the teacher forum advised. “They wanted students to be able to get the most out of the video content without being influenced by the target key stage. This has worked really well and allowed many of the videos to be used as refreshers as well as topic introductions and extension activities,” explains Elizabeth.

For now, the plan is to keep RMG’s craft activities and learning resources available online until the museums reopen in physical form. This means there will be plenty for families to explore and get stuck into on the website over the summer holidays.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming audiences back into the museums when it is safe to do so,” says Sarah, adding that planning for reopening and responsible management of onsite activities is already underway. The team are also looking for ways to use the outdoor spaces surrounding the museums – which fall within the UNESCO Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site – to play a bigger role in the experience of visiting the physical sites.

“For now, our plans to develop and deliver digital learning provisions is our priority. We will be providing new opportunities to enjoy engagement with the collections and we are committed in continuing to provide high quality, inclusive, inspiring experiences for our learners, should they be joining us online or in person.”

SELF-ISOLATE WHEN ALERTED

If you’re told you have been exposed to an infected person you must self-isolate for 14 days to protect your friends and family.

One area in which this has been particularly successful is the astronomy offering from the Royal Observatory, which is accessed by pupils, parents and teachers alike. Split up by age group and key stage level, its contents is easily accessible and clear to follow for all who find their way onto the site.

“We have lots of teachers using the resources to set tasks for students to do at home as well as for longer term projects to work on independently,” says Elizabeth Avery, RMG’s senior manager of astronomy education collections and public engagement. “We also have parents and children getting involved, often this is either as a family looking for enjoyable and educational activities to do

Musical director and community choir leader Emma Bond has been busy since the lockdown began. Having established The Singing Hour, an hour-long singing session held over Zoom providing vulnerable and isolated members of the community with daily social interaction, she next turned her attention to the borough’s children, many of whom are missing out on the musical education they would have enjoyed at school. To counter this, she launched Children Together, a weekly scheme which unites budding musicians over Zoom for a 30-minute music lesson and chance to perform anything they’ve recently learned, writes Holly O’Mahony…

“After the successful launch of The Singing Hour, I wanted to devise something for the younger learners within our community,” explains Emma who, with 26 years’ experience as a secondary school music teacher under her belt, knew she was the right person for the job.

“I wanted it to be child-centred and child-led. Lots of our children are having their schooling online, but are missing out on talking with youngsters their own age and are missing their friends,” says the music director, who lives in the Royal Arsenal with her partner and children. “Children Together gives young people a chance to socialise while learning.”

After piloting a longer class, Emma decided that a shorter, 30-minute format would be the ideal length of

time to keep her pupils – aged 12 and under – interested and on task.

The safety of the children taking part also had to be carefully considered.

As such, Emma screens each new participating family via a short video interview to comply with online safeguarding issues. “During the screening process I run through the rules with the families to ensure online safety,” she explains. Every child taking part in the weekly sessions must also have an adult present with them in the room.

The weekly sessions are also a chance for brave volunteers to perform a solo each week. “Some of the children already play an instrument, so this weekly platform motivates them to learn something to a performance standard,” says Emma, adding that musical quizzes and group singalongs interject the performances. “We have a huge wealth of second languages on the show too, and each week one child leads everyone in singing something simple in their second language.”

The classes are educational, covering core parts of the KS1 and KS2 national curriculum, which many children will not have had access to while learning at home. “The music curriculum focuses on performing, composing and listening. Children Together

Taking part in Children Together costs just £2 per child per lesson.

“I think it is really important to keep fees low during this time. Many of

us have been affected financially during the lockdown and are now watching our budgets,” she explains.

“No prior experience is necessary.

Our eldest participant is 12, but we also have some toddlers who listen with their parents.” Currently 16 different families are taking part in the weekly Children Together sessions, which are held on Saturdays from 10am – 10:30am, but Emma keenly points out that there’s room for more pupils to sign up at any point.

“Many children are missing the structure of school. My teenage boys can't wait to get back to school and they are not usually that fond of going,” she laughs. “Even though some children are lucky enough to be continuing their music lessons with their teachers on a one-to-one basis, they are still missing out on all the

concerts and music performances that normally take place in schools,” she says. “Children Together gives children the motivation to practise something and perform it to the rest of the group.”

Ultimately, though, Children Together offers little ones across the borough a platform on which to develop a shared appreciation of different instruments and genres of music, and to form friendships with other learners in the group. “As well as making new friends, [the children] are also inspired by listening to the others in the group. They are developing respect for one another and are also learning new languages and new songs,” Emma concludes.

Wellbeing calls supporting our self-isolating residents With the number of COVID-19 cases in the community reducing, the country is preparing for the further easing of the lockdown measures.

People who are shielding can now take initial steps to safely spend time outdoors if they would like to but should continue to avoid all nonessential face-to-face contact. This means you should not go to places like supermarkets or to pharmacies.

With the introduction of the NHS Test and Trace service, there may also be an increase in the number of people self-isolating and who need support. The Royal Greenwich Community Hub will be here for them.

Our incredible volunteers have been instrumental in supporting our community in this time of crisis. Plumstead resident Motunrayo Olofinbinu has been a volunteer with the Royal Greenwich Community Hub since it launched. In the seven weeks she's been lending a helping hand, she has already supported more than 180 residents. She said

Volunteering is in my nature, especially when there is call for additional support. I am passionate about helping out whenever the need arises - and the COVID-19 pandemic has probably created one of the biggest needs in our lifetime for volunteers. I saw the request from Royal Greenwich for volunteers and jumped at the chance to join the team.

"I am glad to have been able to help the Community Hub and have been supporting vulnerable and shielding residents with wellbeing phone calls.

I have been checking on their general wellbeing, asking if they need any support and signposting them to help or making referrals for them if need be.

"One lady I spoke to is in her 60s and has been self-isolating since lockdown began. She's found it very lonely and was very grateful and relieved to get a wellbeing phone call from me and was so happy to be referred on to befriending services.

"Another gentleman who had been a nurse in the NHS for 25 years, was amazed to receive a wellbeing call. Although he was supported by his family and didn't require the Community Hub, he said it was such a kind gesture and counted himself very lucky to be remembered and checked on.

The explosive magazine at Greenwich

Continuing along the river past riverside gardens we get to Enderby Wharf. This famous site is going to take rather more than one article to describe – its known (and important) history goes back to the 17th century. Enderby Wharf is the site where revolutions were made.

In 1694 two government officials, Thomas Littleton and a colleague thought that it would be a good idea to use the Greenwich March – Greenwich Peninsula - for a gunpowder store. They were concerned about the effects of keeping a vast amount of gunpowder in the Tower of London and they thought that it might be safer in Greenwich- although Greenwich residents, it turned out, thought it would be safer somewhere else – anywhere else, really.

The explosive powder was made in privately owned mills mostly on tributaries to the Thames.

The idea was that these mills sent it off by water transport, to be tested and distributed to the Army and Navy – and so what was needed was a riverside site near London. Greenwich was ideal with a large damp marsh conveniently near a complex of government

buildings just a bit up river.

The land they chose lay alongside Bendish sluice - one of the many drainage ditches, which intersect the marsh. Bendish Sluice was around until very very recently and throughout the period when the Enderby family and the cable works were here ran across the site and flowed into the River from under the existing steps next to the present jetty. It disappeared only when the new housing was built and a new storm drain installed.

Older locals might remember some penstock apparatus on the riverside path beside the entrance to the cable works.

The main building was a 'proof house' where the gunpowder was tested for quality. This was a large square building around a central quadrangle. There were ten doors and fifty windows all with shutters.

The gunpowder was protected from damp by an internal false wall. The roof was three courses of tiles 'laid in loome” –in buildings handling explosives a roof is usually lightly constructed. The central building had two wings at each side – one with an end chimney and a strange looking spire on the roof.

the Office of Ordnance. These vessels were supposed to travel downriver in convoy – but often the garrisons down river at Woolwich and Gravesend were just asked to watch out for the powder-laden boats as they passed. This was presumably to make sure they hadn’t blown up on the way down river.

Only water transport was used as far as possible for safety reasons.

This meant that the wharfage arrangements at the riverside were most important. This was called ‘the bridge and there were two pairs of gates to the waterside leading to an extensive double jetty. It had a widened end and a series of structures in the river down it - '30 fenders of ironworks’. Before it was built ‘a waterman had to be evicted from the site’. The ships which called there were acquired through press advertisements and then inspected by someone from

All of this means that thousands of barrels of explosives were passing through Greenwich every year and by the 1750s this was all the powder for both Army and Navy and this must have meant that many clerks were engaged in administration here in addition to the skilled workers who tested the powder. These were 'settled labourers’ with a permanent job in government service. They wore special clothing - ‘calfskin leather aprons’ and 'worn pumps' – on site.

History was a Robert Furnis, replaced by 1770 by Charles Newton.

Local residents did not appreciate the presence of this large store of explosives on their doorsteps, Representations were made to Parliament as early as 1718 and in 1750 petition was presented. This said mentioned ‘the apparent Danger the said Magazine is exposed to, of being blown up by Treachery, lightning and other Accidents, arising from its present defenceless Situation and ruinous condition, and the extensive and scare repairable Damage ……. cannot but cause terrible apprehensions to all who seriously consider it. They pointed out that ‘the Inhabitants of the Town of Greenwich .. must suffer inconceivably … from the Destruction of the Royal Palace, and that superb building the Royal Hospital for Seamen ….as dreaded consequence of such an Explosion’ and also ‘his Majesty's Dockyards and Storehouses both at Deptford and Woolwich, and even the Cities of London and Westminster’.

Also ‘the shock, .. would obstruct the Navigation of the River; and many ships ,, probably be destroyed”.

The Government set up a commission to investigate. This suggested the magazine be moved to Purfleet and a Bill to enable this work went through Parliament ‘. The text of the Act made out that it was ‘utterly incapable of being effectually repaired'. Which is probably the bureaucrats way of saying they wanted to move it.

Greenwich in 1768 and the depot closed soon after. By then it had been decided to ignore Parliament’s instructions and it was thought uneconomic to pull it down. The workers were all sent to the new depot at Purfleet except Robert Dyer, who was too ill to attend the Ordnance Board meeting at which made this decision was made.

He was superannuated, and was the last man to work on site.

The magazine was demolished in 1771 under the supervision of Mr. Newton the storekeeper. The materials –brick and old timber were all shipped in lighters down river to Woolwich. Newton reported that ‘that the Magazine and Proof House are entirely down and that there remains only the Office, part of the Guard Room, and the Stage and Bridge Standing.

One small reminder of the depot remained in Greenwich for the next fifty years. In 1846 a pub in East Street (today’s Eastney Street) was burnt to the ground. It was a dreadful fire – one bedridden old lady was only rescued through the ‘bold daring of a young sailor’. The pub’s name was the ‘Royal Magazine’.

All you can say really is that it’s a good job it was the pub that caught fire rather than the depot itself!

At Purfleet the remains of the replacement depot is now part of a housing estate where residents have set up a small museum – The Purfleet Heritage and Military Centre.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) plans to reopen its community 3G pitch for a limited number of targeted sessions from Saturday 13 June.

CACT has put together a plan for new Premier League Kicks sessions which follow government guidelines which will see a limited number of young people who book in advance take part in training around fitness, passing and shooting.

The pitch will be split into four areas and participants will be allocated to a 1-hour slot, with two people in each of the four areas at any one time.

"CACT staff will be on site. We will not be coaching young people, but we will be facilitating the session and ensuring all guidelines are adhered to.
