‘We want our schools to be vibrant places for the children again’ Schools across the country have been preparing for some of their pupils to return to the classroom.

Here is how one group of schools has been getting ready to make sure pupils can be taught safely and get on with lessons STAFF AT the Embark Federation of nine schools across Derbyshire have put their hearts and souls into preparing to open their doors to Reception, Year One and Year Six pupils over the coming weeks.

They have created the Reconnection to Recovery and Resilience programme with education consultant Sharon Gray.

The nine-point support plan has attracted attention from educators as far away as New Zealand and Australia, to help parents return their children to schools with confidence.

Embark Federation trust leader Matthew Crawford said: “As soon as we went into lockdown we were thinking about our pupils coming back to school, whatever date that would be. We want nothing more than for our schools to be vibrant places again, where the children love learning.’

‘BIG RESPONSIBILITY’ Embark’s chair of trustees Sarah Armitage, who has collaborated on the programme, said: “We are carrying all of our 3,000 children through a crisis and that’s a big responsibility, so we recognised immediately that we needed a plan.

“Our compass through this has been our core belief in families first and, through adversity, we have created a programme with the children’s emotional needs at the centre.’

Another key strand of the programme was, in line with government guidance, carrying out bespoke risk assessments for each Embark school.

Matthew said: “It can’t be a one size fits all approach.

One of our schools is nearly 300 years old with narrow corridors and small classrooms while others contain lots of large spaces so social distancing will be much easier.”

She said: “We don’t have corridors in some places so we have created a oneway system meaning the children won’t bump into each other. We’ve factored in that some children require more physical space than others because they have some form of special educational and/or emotional needs.

“As for hand washing, we’ll be showing the children how to do that and encouraging them to wash their hands at regular intervals in wash basins in the classroom.’

Chaucer Junior is introducing staggered drop-offs and breaktimes and Anna and her team have

measured all the classrooms to work out the size of the ‘bubbles’ – groups of a maximum of 15 pupils – they can fit.

Children can take in their own lunches or enjoy food provided by the school, safely delivered to the classroom door to avoid children congregating in the dining hall.

A fortnight ago, Anna and the Year Six team sent out questionnaires to all of Chaucer Junior’s parents so they could express their concerns – then rang to talk them through.

Anna said: “In nearly every conversation, as I explained to our families how the new measures would work, I could sense them relaxing on the end of the line.”

Another Embark school, Heath Primary, near Chesterfield, held a massive Zoom call for parents to allay concerns.

Techy Time: the local support scheme tackling isolation during the pandemic The government-imposed lockdown has left many people feeling isolated. According to a survey of UK adults conducted in April by the the Mental Health Foundation, one in four (24%) said they had experienced feelings of loneliness since the lockdown began. Prior to the coronavirus outbreak and subsequent social distancing measures, just one in ten people (10%) reported having these feelings. The impact of long-term loneliness on mental health can be extremely serious, triggering problems including depression, anxiety and stress. One local organisation looking to combat loneliness and isolation during the pandemic is Blackheath community centre Mycenae House, writes Holly O’Mahony…

For the past two years, Mycenae House has run its ‘Reach Out’ programme, supporting those in the community who are socially isolated and suffering from poor physical and mental health, and loneliness. An arm of this scheme is ‘Techy Time’, group sessions for senior citizens which offers valuable lessons to help them develop their tech skills, and a space to make friends and socialise with others in the community.

Since the social distancing measures came into place, 'Techy Time' has gone online, with sessions taking place every Wednesday over Zoom, led by the organisation’s ‘tech guru’ Paul Clayton. “Techy Time provides a social setting [for vulnerable people] to access some assistance and talk about technology in a way without feeling intimidated or undermined,” explains Paul.

“We are thrilled we’ve managed to arm [the group] with enough knowledge to help them virtually meet up every week for a coffee and a chat, and to help those who are feeling worried and lonely,” he beams.

“It's a great opportunity to signpost them into befriending services from some fantastic local organisations which can help support them.”

Each week, Paul covers a new techfocused topic, delivering it in lesson format to the group – which can be tricky when some attendees turn up hoping for one-to-one assistance with a particular issue. “Without volunteers, it gets very hard when people turn up for direct assistance,” he says. Paul considers it a small triumph when these people choose to stay for the session anyway. “I like to think when people stay they’ve found a comfortable place to find out about digital technology,” he says.

Helping senior citizens deal with tech issues remotely is not without its challenges. “I used to work in technical support for an internet company many years ago and am used to working ‘blind’, but it's arduous,” Paul admits. “Nowadays, remote control tools enable me to get people out of a hole, although people have to install it, trust me (or my volunteers) and then not trust an opportunist afterwards,” he explains.

Having initially helped the group set themselves up with Zoom – the face-to-face communications platform which has helped millions of people around the world stay connected with their loved ones during the pandemic – Paul found the uptake for his Techy Time sessions to be initially smaller online. But, the numbers gradually crept up, and three months on are nearly equal to those of the in-person classes.

“I’ve been emailing the larger ‘membership’ with details of each session and I’ve also started providing one-to-one support to enable more people to join in,” he says. Each session focuses on a different theme, with topics covered so far including relying on internet access, shopping safely online and getting comfortable with using Zoom. Paul and his colleagues also use the sessions to signpost the group towards other potentially helpful organisations and to answer any questions they have – both about tech and other issues. “The group is quite lively and friendly,” he says. “We’re all learning together, which is the 'Mycenae Digital’ premise: Getting Online Together.”

Test and Trace will help The new NHS Test and Trace service launched across England on May 28 forms a central part of the Government’s coronavirus recovery strategy to help us all get our lives back to something like normal.

The service will help identify, contain and control coronavirus, reduce the spread of the virus and save lives. Today we explain how the system will work and answer some of the key questions which have been raised by members of the public.

THE NHS Test and Trace service will have the capacity to trace the contacts of 10,000 people who test positive for coronavirus per day and can be scaled up if needed.

The rollout of the service, which includes 25,000 contact tracing staff working with Public Health England, has been made possible by the rapid expansion of testing.

People who are contacted by the NHS Test and Trace service will be given clear information explaining what they must do and how they can access local support if needed, and the Department for Work and Pensions has announced that those having to self-isolate will be eligible for statutory sick pay if they are unable to work from home.

New guidance means those who have been in close contact with someone who tests positive must isolate for 14 days, even if they have no symptoms, to avoid unknowingly spreading the virus.

Anyone who tests positive for coronavirus will be contacted by NHS Test and Trace and will need to share information about their recent interactions.

This could include household members,

people with who they have been in direct contact, or within two metres for more than 15 minutes.

People identified as having been in close contact with someone who has a positive test must stay at home for 14 days, even if they do not have symptoms, to stop unknowingly spreading the virus.

Dido Harding, who is executive chair of NHS Test and Trace, said: “NHS Test and Trace already employs over 40,000 people who are working hard to deliver both testing and contact tracing at scale.

This is no small achievement and I am hugely grateful to everyone involved.

“NHS Test and Trace will not succeed on its own – we all need to play our part.

“Together we can help contain the virus, stop it spreading further and ultimately save lives.”

Health and Social Care Secretary Matt Hancock said: “NHS Test and Trace will be vital to stopping the spread of the virus. It is how we will be able to protect our friends and family from infection, and protect our NHS. ‘I’m helping to reduce spread of the virus’ CASE STUDY NHS NURSE WHEN the pandemic started, NHS nurse Josie Hitchen was taking a career break.

In fact, she was in Bali, training to be a yoga instructor.

“I flew back into lockdown and responded to the fast tracking route on the NHS Professionals website,” she explains. “This took me straight back onto the ward at my local hospital in Middlesbrough as a nurse.”

Soon afterwards, NHS Professionals sent her email about openings for contact tracers. She said: “Public health promotion has always been something I’m interested in so I applied and I got a position.” She started training immediately – this involved everything from understanding the coronavirus to familiarising herself with data protection and the various systems used in tracing.

“I was also lucky enough to be involved in some roleplay calls before the system went live.”

Josie now mixes nursing shifts with contact tracing shifts.

She has children and her husband is currently away. Her mother is a designated carer for her youngest (the others can go to school as she is a key worker) but the flexibility of shiftwork suits her well and fits around her family life.

She has already contact traced 10 people. Josie said: “You log on to various systems and you

Next, you call them, explain who you are, where you’re calling from, what contact tracing will do, how it can help prevent the spread of the virus and ask if they’re happy to proceed.”

Next, the tracers take them through a questionnaire on a government website. This asks for details such as where they’ve

been, who has been in the house with them, where they’ve worked and so on.

People can fill these in this questionnaire themselves, but not everyone has a smartphone or is comfortable doing it unassisted. The average call takes about 45 minutes.

Josie said: “I’m really enjoying it. It’s been very interesting to learn about the coronavirus and the systems we use and I’ve had lots of positive feedback.”

If you have symptoms...

If you are contacted...

STEP 1 - ISOLATE As soon as you experience coronavirus symptoms, you should self-isolate for at least seven days.

Anyone else in your household should selfisolate for 14 days from when you started having symptoms.

If you are contacted because you have been in close contact with someone who has coronavirus:

STEP 2 - TEST You should order a coronavirus test immediately at nhs.uk/ coronavirus or call 119 if you have no internet access.

STEP 3 - RESULTS If your test is positive you must complete the remainder of your sevenday self-isolation. Anyone in your household should also complete self-isolation for 14 days from when you started having symptoms. If your test is negative, you and other household members no longer need to isolate.

STEP 4 - SHARE CONTACTS If you test positive for coronavirus, the NHS Test and Trace service will send you a text or email alert or

call you within 24 hours with instructions of how to share details of people you have been in close, recent contact with and places you have visited. It is important that you respond as soon as possible so that they can give appropriate advice to those who need it.

You will be asked to do this online via a secure website or you will be called by one of our NHS contact tracers. n More information on NHS Test and Trace is available at gov.uk/ coronavirus

STEP 1 - ALERT You will be alerted by the NHS Test and Trace service if you have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus.

The alert will come either by text or email and you’ll need to log on to the NHS Test and Trace website, which is the easiest way for you and the service to communicate – but, if not, a trained call handler will talk you through what you

need to do. Under 18s will get a phone call and a parent or guardian will be asked to give permission to continue.

Common questions and their answers What is Test and Trace?

The NHS Test and Trace brings together testing, contact tracing and outbreak management into one service. It will play an important part in the wider strategy to save lives and to protect the health and care system as we start to move out of lockdown.

The more rapidly we can identify people who may have been at risk of infection and, if necessary, advise them to self-isolate, the more effectively we can reduce the spread of the virus and maintain transmission at low levels.

What is contact tracing?

Contact tracing is a wellestablished method of preventing and controlling outbreaks such as measles and TB. Tracers work with a person who has an infection to help them remember everyone who they have had close contact with while they could have been infectious.

They then contact and warn everyone who might be at risk, as quickly as possible, offering advice on how they should act in order to help prevent further spread.

What is a ‘contact’?

A ‘contact’ is a person who

has been close to someone who has tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) any time from two days before the person was symptomatic up to seven days from onset of symptoms.

How will you ensure all contacts are traced?

Contact tracers will seek to contact all cases and contacts they can identify.

The Covid 19 app will provide the added ability to warn contacts about people with coronavirus that they wouldn’t ordinarily be able to identify, such as a fellow passenger on a bus.

How do I share my contacts if I test positive?

If you test positive for coronavirus, the NHS Test and Trace service will send

you a text or email alert with instructions of how to share details of people you have been in close contact with and places you have visited.

Will people know it is me that exposed them to the risk of infection?

The NHS Test and Trace service will not tell your contacts your name or details. It will simply tell them that they have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for coronavirus and need to act.

If I don’t have symptoms can I leave self-isolation early?

No, if you have been told you are a ‘contact’ you must selfisolate for 14 days from the date of your last contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus.

NHS Covid-19 app NHS Test and Trace national coordinator Professor John Newton said the project will be enhanced when the NHS COVID-19 app is launched.

He explained that to control the virus we still need to continue with social distancing and good hygiene, but we also now have a comprehensive test and trace service to stop new cases spreading.

He said: “This approach

will allow us to gradually return to more normal personal, social and economic lives while recognising that we have to stay alert and respond rapidly to any advice from the new service.

“Work continues on the NHS COVID-19 app following a successful rollout on the Isle of Wight.

“There has been a positive reception to the test and trace

system on the island with over 52,000 downloads in the first week.

“The app, which will form a part of the NHS Test and Trace service, is due to be launched in the coming weeks once contact tracing is up and running.

“It will significantly extend the speed and reach of contact tracing, by helping to identify those who you may not know, such as someone sitting next

to you on public transport. The app will also give powerful insights into the spread of the virus and how to contain it.”

Michelangelo, Verrocchio & da Vinci: Learn to draw life like the masters

Arts Prior to lockdown, Jon Long could be found teaching life drawing classes in the 15th and 16th century tradition at both Mycenae House and Beckenham Place Mansion. If not there, you might have found him running creative and interactive art history workshops at the National Gallery, the V&A, the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. All of these institutions are, of course, closed for now, but Jon’s classes have found a new home in the online sphere.

His scheme, The Renaissance Workshop, is an arts and humanities initiative promoting interaction with traditional Western art and culture.

Through it, Jon hopes to inspire his pupils to connect with the great artists of the past and use this understanding to inspire their own practice. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Jon Long to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: You set up the Renaissance Workshop to help people understand and express a connection to the cultural roots of Western civilisation. Why was this your aim and what inspired you to run the classes?

Jon Long: I believe that the creative, intellectual, and moral legacy of our culture can inspire and empower anybody. I want to promote a positive vision of our cultural heritage because a society cannot flourish without a meaningful sense of its past, and individuals cannot affirm of themselves without both a sense of belonging and of what made them who they are. A tragedy of modern life is that we perceive western culture to be this historical thing in museums and as something we are distanced from today.

Without an understanding of the history and development of western civilisation, we have no chance of realising how we have been formed by those who have made our society and culture what it is. An authentic, living and positive connection to their legacy seems to me the only way we can live our lives with meaning. Anybody can have a living bond with this past – no matter where they are from – and it can elevate, inspire and empower them.

HOM: What was the experience of going into lockdown like for you as an art teacher?

JL: The prospect of losing a connection with my community and my life models was heart-breaking. The Renaissance Workshop is made up of a family of people from all backgrounds, and my motivation for this project is both love for them and love for the legacy of our culture. The thought of ending my work in channelling the wonder and mystery of our heritage was devastating.

Fortunately, thanks to moving my lessons online, I have not missed a single class.

HOM: How did you go about moving your lessons online?

JL: I initially set up a YouTube channel so that my community could access free content. Now, I’m also running classes on Zoom, which include live-streamed drawing classes from either my own or the British Museum’s collection, and I’m also running interactive lectures on the development of Western art. So far, these have focused on the work of Velazquez, da Vinci, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Titian.

HOM: What has the uptake been like for these classes?

JL: This lockdown has, paradoxically, unlocked the potential for me to share my lessons

with a wider community. Prior to this experience, I had no website for my business and only very primitive branding. HOM: Prior to lockdown, had you done any online teaching before?

JL: I had only ever taught in person before this and had no intention of offering lessons online. Now, I’ve realised there’s huge potential for my projects online and so I’ll continue to develop them as far as I can. That said, I hope to bring back the interactive legacy of old master drawing to Mycenae

for your classes and what do pupils need to prepare?

HOM: How have you found the experience of teaching lessons online so far?

JL: People can enrol for my six-week online courses via my website and this is how people can also book a place on my drop-in Online Life Drawing classes. All interactive classes are now on Zoom. All people need is any basic drawing materials to take part and just the tiniest bit of curiosity! I’ll have you drawing in a heartbeat!

JL: It’s been incredible. I’ve had the chance to teach people I would never have had the opportunity to meet in person. Most of my pupils are from my pre-existing community but since running my Online Life Drawing classes on Zoom, I’ve had people from Brooklyn to Montreal, Rome and Tokyo join. I’ve also been able to engage more with the theoretical and technical insights of historical artists – something I’ve wanted to do for a while.

HOM: Practically speaking, how do people go about enrolling

HOM: You’ve also run classes for charity. Can you tell us more about that?

JL: I was contacted by The Hope Projects who shelter and support asylum seekers here in England and I ran a special class on The Renaissance just for them. Some of

them had never heard of Leonardo da Vinci and had never drawn before.

For me, this was a great privilege because I was able to show that the legacy of the old masters and the traditional roots of western civilisation can be meaningful and positive for anyone. Many of the people who would otherwise be destitute were it not for this charity have since joined my community and continued to draw with us. This is pure, heart-bursting joy: not only have these vulnerable people been given a chance to interact with a community like mine, who live and breathe a connection to the past, but the past has had an opportunity to show its true wonderful colours.

JL: I would only say the same thing I said in my first YouTube video to my community a week before the lockdown: In this time, we have been separated from one another, but in some ways, we will grow closer. I am not sure that I would call this a silver lining, but it is certainly true.

These extraordinary circumstances have revealed a lot about who we are as people. We are, all of us, doing our best to keep close and show one another that we care.

Run by gourmands Ana and Teresa, who started out importing quality ingredients to chefs including Heston Blumenthal, the restaurant – which itself started life as a pop-up – has since spawned a second site and between them, you’ll find some of the best Spanish cuisine in London. Oh, and award-winning low intervention, biodynamic wines. L’Oculto Cocina’s lockdown offering is truly a cut above. The tapas-style menu – a chance to seriously upgrade your standard takeaway – features the likes of braised pork cheeks with caremalised peaches and pickled red cabbage; and piquillo peppers stuffed with morcilla (spanish blood sausage), apple, and carrot sauce. News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

Bookmark this – three new community libraries!

While libraries across the borough are closed, we have been working with businesses to set up community libraries to give residents access to a selection of books.

The volunteer-run community libraries are in stores across Abbey Wood and Plumstead and each stock between 1220 books. Volunteers attend the libraries each week to rotate and maintain stock, providing a good mix of adult and children’s books in a variety of genres.

Each community library has a secure returns box where residents can return books they’ve borrowed from the community library and donate books they no longer want.

All library-issued books on loan from Greenwich Libraries have been renewed until 1 August and fines have been suspended. These can be returned when libraries reopen.

All returned or donated books are cleaned and quarantined for 72 hours before being placed into the community library.

Residents should only touch the books in the community library if they intend to borrow the book.

Brockley is in no short supply of places to order a decent pizza, but a favourite of ours has got to be the Nunhead branch of south London mini-chain 400 Rabbits. This trendy joint offers craft beers and sodas, and even bottled negronis on its home delivery menu. The pizzas themselves all sit under minimalist names – ‘the asparagus one’, ‘the anchovy one’ etc – and vegans are well catered for (go for ‘the dirty one’, which comes topped with a trio of vegan cheeses and meat-free sausage among other ingredients). Others such as ‘the rhubarb one’ (topped with chipotle-rolled goats cheese, piquillo peppers and the titular rhubarb) are about as experimental as pizzas can get. Lastly, polish off your meal with a gourmet gelato, which comes in three different flavours.

Inspired by the food scene of Southern California, husband-and-wife team Oz and Sheena set up Zephyr Burgers in 2018 in a bid to recreate the colourful plates and smashed burgers that were so popular across the pond. Starting out as a trader with gourmet street food hub Kerb, they went on to run their concept as a pop-up in Dulwich before taking a space at trendy multi-purpose venue Peckham Levels. Still delivering through lockdown – and among the most successful restaurants in the area on Deliveroo – Zephyr Burgers offers a short and simple menu of Cali-style burgers and loaded fries.

Mary Mills Continuing along the riverside path, past Riverside Gardens we come straight onto to Enderby Wharf – or do we? In the mid-19th century after passing Coles Child’s coal wharf and Mowlem’s stone wharf, and some assorted barge builders we would have come to a foundry before we got to Enderby’s. The site on which the foundry stood was originally leased from the Enderby family and eventually returned to them to become part of the cable works. Some people will remember a chimney here, demolished a few years ago – that would have been on the site of this foundry. Its owner actually seems, initially at least, to have been in some sort of partnership with the Enderbys. He was Joshua Taylor Beale a resourceful and innovative engineer who you should really know more about. I have written about Beale in the past but carried on researching him =and it was a visit to Matlock and the discovery of a scandal which really focussed my attention.

Joshua Beale was a Londoner, born in Soho. In 1822 he took out a patent for a rotary steam engine - a variant on the usual way of using steam to power machinery but one which had never really been a success. A detailed explanation of them can be found on the following website which puts Beale in his place - fairly near the bottom! http://www.douglas-self. com/MUSEUM/POWER/rotaryengines/ rotaryeng.htm. However, the rotary engine was a constant in Beale’s career and to be a factor in his one amazingly successful device.

He moved to Greenwich in the 1830s, or earlier. With Hannah and their three children he lived Vale Cottage, roughly on the site of the Plaza at the bottom of Vanbrugh Hill. He was apparently in partnership with the Enderbys. There were apparently discussions, including Michael Faraday himself, on experiments by the Enderbys Brothers on rubber solutions and ways to improve the rope they made. Beale’s work with naphtha was directly relevant to this – as it was a solvent for rubber - and may be why he moved to Greenwich.

In 1822 he was about 30 years old and described as a cabinet maker. – Five years earlier banns had been called for his marriage to Hannah Jones and 1825 their son, John, was born. Soon after, Joshua, still in Whitechapel began to work with naphtha – an old name for inflammable oil made from coal tar. He used it as the fuel in lamps which he designed and sold and used as raw material tar bought from Shoreditch gasworks. He also developed equipment for heating inflammable liquids without the risk of them catching fire – important for east London sugar industry.

In 1834 he patented lamps which burnt ‘the commonest hydrocarbon obtained from coal tar’ and in 1837 came the ‘Air and Vapour Light; where the oil is vapourised to mix with ‘oxygen from the atmosphere’.

In the 1840s Beale began to experiment with making steam in road vehicles. In the early 1840s some cars were made at Beale’s Greenwich foundry – but they were the not the only such experimental transport which trundled round the roads of North Kent in the mid nineteenth century. Most of these cars were steam powered and developed as the same time as railway locomotives but they were lighter and smaller and, perhaps, more sophisticated. Beale fell in with Colonel Francis Maceroni, an enthusiast for steam cars, who claimed to be a fiery Sicilian ‘in love with quick motion’ although he was neither from the military or particularly Italian,

In 1841 Maceroni set up the ‘Common Road Steam Conveyance Company’ which aimed to build a steam vehicle to Maceroni’s patents. Joshua Beale built it, with the help of his younger www.weekender.co.uk

brother, Benjamin, who did all the drawings. At about same time another, Greenwich and Deptford based entrepreneur, Frank Hills, seems to have been doing much the same and it may be that Beale also worked for him too... The resulting vehicles could take a number of passengers – one took 15 and another 20. They began to undertake demonstration trips around the Kentish countryside.

On a Wednesday in July 1840 a party of seventeen went in Maceroni’s carriage from East Greenwich through Lewisham to Bromley... On the way back they turned onto the Dover Road and went up Blackheath Hill - at 12 miles per hour ‘’in gallant style’ with 17 passengers. They continued across Blackheath and up Shooters Hill and as they needed water they stopped at The Bull. Inevitably, water was not all they took on there - the report says ‘the men were regaled and eulogised the scientific engineer’. Beale and Maceroni had agreed £800 each for the carriages but Beale charged extra £300 per vehicle because of changes. The money was not paid and Beale impounded the carriages and their eventual fate is not known.

In 1842 in another complete change to his usual work Beale became Engineer to a project for Artesian wells in east London. This seems to have never got going, but it shows the range of projects he was prepared to take on.

He repeatedly patented changes his to his ‘rotative engine and continued to manufacture and sell them but he also made more conventional steam engines. The only remaining Beale engine still in existence is a condensing engine from a silk mill in Glemsford in East Anglia which is now in the Beamish industrial museum. He also made engines for boats, and possibly the boats themselves. A trial of his boat and engine at Yarmouth was described by no less than George Stephenson himself who said the engine could not be made to work and the party was stranded out at sea. It appears Stephenson had to pay for the rescue.

expedition to find Franklin and a demonstration of these launches for the Admiralty took place on the river opposite Somerset House. By the early 1850s Beale had ‘several boats on the river’ included his experimental ‘Pigmy Giant’? He invented a ‘bird’s wing’ propeller for boats and, in another change of interest in possible devices, sent spies to see a rival’s experimental gas cookers. He patented a means of preventing ‘encrusting’ in boilers with urine and soda, he had an interest in boot and shoe manufacture, in dyeing and also invented machines for dealing with that new and useful substance – rubber.

His most important device was the exhauster. This is the one thing which Beale is remembered for and it was astonishingly successful. Exhausters were used in gas works to draw the gas through the pipes like a reverse pump and they are an adaption of his rotary steam engine. He sold one locally to the South Metropolitan Gas Company in the Old Kent Road which bought one in 1854. But there were to be many others – every gas works needed one.

Joshua died in 1866 and the factory was taken over by his son, John.

John redesigned the exhauster and took out a new patent for it in the 1860s. However, the lease on the Greenwich factory was about to expire and John did not renew it. John sold the patent for his redesigned exhauster to the Bermondsey based Brian Donkin Company. They later moved to Chesterfield so I went to the Derbyshire Record Office in Matlock to look at their archive.

In Matlock I found a file be full of letters from Benjamin Beale –Joshua’s brother and John’s uncle. He said

John had no right to inherit the factory and the patent because he was really John Jones ‘a workman in the factory ‘and that Joshua could not have a son since he had never married. Therefore, he Benjamin was really Joshua’s heir and should have the rights over the exhauster patent. The case reached court some years later and claims of John not being Joshua’s son were ignored by the judge. Yet back in 1817 banns were called for Joshua and Hannah, but there was no marriage. Sadly Hannah’s sudden death in 1841 looks very much like a hushed up suicide.

There must have been an agreement of some sort between John and Benjamin.

John sold Donkin his revised patent, and Benjamin sold the original patent to Gwynne’s, the Hammersmith and Blackfriars based pump maker. John went on to develop a bicycle and a projector and, clearly a wealthy man, he built a large house in Westcombe Park Road. Benjamin moved to Wales.

The exhauster became a major part of the Donkin Company’s output in Chesterfield where they continued to pioneer new developments in gas industry machinery. The exhauster was redesigned and altered many times and machinery based on it was still being made in the 1960s’.

The works closed in 1996 but now, still in Chesterfield AVK’s Donkin Division makes ‘high performance valves and accessories for the gas supply industry’ and add that their predecessors made equipment ‘used in the UK and worldwide gas industry for over 17years’.

17-year-old benefits from virtual Post-16 Academy sessions

CACT’s Post-16 Academy combines education with the life of a professional footballer

Jakey Palmer, from Eltham, has been working hard to make the most of virtual Post-16 Football & Education Academy sessions during lockdown.

A two-year full-time programme run in partnership with SCL Education & Training, Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT)’s Post16 Football & Education Academy is aimed at 16 to 19-year-old males and females interested in combining their education with the life of a professional footballer.

Jakey, 17, who says training during lockdown “has been very, very different”, has had to think outside the box at times.

“I haven’t got a goal up in my park, so I have to practice my shooting drills up against a fence, and dribble around cones that act as defenders”, he says.

Having regular experience of “the competitive environment” is an important part of the programme, and Jakey has missed match days most during lockdown, “the days where you can utilise your training you’ve been doing”.

He has been taking part in isolation sessions put on by tutors over Microsoft Teams and spent extra time analysing professional matches in this period, however.

“My knowledge of the game has improved due to the analysis on professional games I have been watching”, he adds.

And he has used the period to get on top of school work, training and nutrition, which he has done “hours and hours of research on how to optimise”.

“I believe I have made quite a few improvements to my game during lockdown”, he says.

“For example, I believe my weak foot and dribbling has become a lot stronger due to the dribbling and shooting exercise I’ve been doing”, he says, and has noticed improvement in his “fitness levels”.

“I have been measuring my running times, and they have improved since the start of lockdown”.

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49, 63, 124 and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) Swingate Lane PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out water mains repair.

2. The Order will come into operation on 1st June 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 3 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Swingate Lane outside number 28.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Kirkham Street, Flaxton Road and vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.
