Sing for the moment: the Greenwich choir leader keeping the community singing together through lockdown “With lockdown, all our lovely groups could not meet anymore. That's 160 singers a week not getting their regular singing fix!,” says the singer and musical director, who lives in the Royal Arsenal with her partner and children. “As reality hit home, I knew I had to create something out of a business that had shut down overnight.”

Prior to lockdown, Emma Bond was the musical director of six community choirs across the borough of Greenwich.

Under the umbrella brand SING TOGETHER LTD, she led singing groups based at Greenwich and Bexley Community Hospice, Mycenae House, and the Churchill theatre among other venues.

With the announced closure of all theatres and community centres back in March, Emma knew she had to act quickly to provide an alternative for her singers – many of whom are vulnerable. To help continue the sense of community while social distancing, she set up The Singing Hour, daily group singing sessions held over Zoom, writes Holly O’Mahony… www.weekender.co.uk

Every weekday, from 10am – 11am, Emma hosts The Singing Hour over Zoom, which is open to up to 100 participants (the maximum number the video communication platform can hold) each day. “If you had mentioned Zoom to me three months ago I would have thought you were referring to an ice lolly,” she laughs. “Luckily my partner, composer (and tekkie extraordinaire) Martin Batchelar, gave me the confidence to take the plunge.”

So far, so popular. “Every day we have between 30 and 50 singers,” Emma beams. “We open the audio facility 15 minutes prior to the singing to enable all our regulars to have a catch up chat. Because we are broadcasting via Zoom, our audience is not limited to south-east London – we now have singers from all over the United Kingdom,” she says.

“For most of my singers, it's about being part of a group. It's about that feel-good factor that you get when you've been singing together,” says Emma, whose intention was always to create something online to keep spirits high in the community during this difficult time. “I believe a daily dose of singing, timetabled at the same time

each day, gives people a structure to their new life under quarantine.”

There’s also more to these daily sessions than singing. “Each week we have featured guests,” explains Emma. These guests are a carefully curated selection of professionals who Emma believes her groups will benefit from hearing speak. “On one day we have a motivational CBT counsellor; on another day guests are invited to speak about a charity or non-profit organisation; and once a week a professional musician performs to the group,” she says. So far, the line-up has included singers based in the Pyrenees, Malta and New Zealand, all performing over Zoom.

Each session begins with Emma asking the community a question to encourage interaction. This could range from ‘Where were you born?’ to ‘What are you having for supper tonight?’. The singers then respond by writing their answers on a piece of paper and holding it up to the screen for others to see. “People love to talk about things, it never fails to bring a smile to the face or a sense of wonder,” says Emma.

As well as running The Singing Hour, Emma hosts a second group initiative called The Listening Hour each Sunday evening. “This gentle, music appreciation class is a lovely foray into a different style of music each week.”

She’s also been offering one-to-one singing classes, again via Zoom.

team at The Churchill Theatre and The Orchard Theatre are already planning a Phoenix Festival to bring their singers together post lockdown in “a joyful celebration”. While no plans have been made – yet – to keep The Singing Hour going once social distancing restrictions lift, Emma is hoping to continue running The Listening Hour via Zoom each Sunday evening.

For Emma, one lovely and unexpected outcome of The Singing Hour has been hearing about the new country-wide friendships that have been forged through the scheme.

“I heard the other day that one of my singers in Dartford has been invited to stay up in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire once the restrictions have been lifted,” she grins.

Above all, Emma’s work with The Singing Hour can be credited for providing some of the most isolated and vulnerable people in the borough with a sense of community and daily interaction at a time when physical get-togethers are impossible. “Most of my singers are not able to leave their homes because of underlying health issues,” she says. “The Singing Hour enables everyone to say hello at least to one person every day.”

Blue sky thinking: is now the time to discover stargazing?

Every cloud has a silver lining, or so the saying goes. To find that of the Covid-19 pandemic, we might have to look quite literally at the sky, where stargazers are reporting exceptional conditions for peering at the various constellations. Has the reduction in air traffic really had that much effect on the visibility of the night’s sky? And what is it like to study the stars at this time? Holly O’Mahony speaks to Royal Observatory astronomer Greg Brown to find out…

“In the past, pollution has been a major issue for astronomy, particularly in big cities,” Greg explains. Greenwich’s Royal Observatory was effectively shut down and relocated to the village of Herstmonceux in East Sussex because of the pollution in the mid 1900s.

“However modern day pollution, at least in most places in the UK, does not create the smog that interferes so strongly with the visibility of the night sky,” he says. In fact, pollution is only a relatively minor issue where visibility is concerned – even less of one for amateur astronomy where absolute accuracy is less important.

While there have been some anecdotal reports that visibility of the night’s sky has been better since lockdown began, Greg is unconvinced this is really the case. “In reality, there is little to no

evidence that the drop in pollution has had any appreciable effect on our ability to view the night sky. Instead, the main issue is light pollution, and there has been little reduction in that during this lockdown,” he explains.

Instead, Greg puts the brilliant clarity being reported down to the largely decent weather the UK has experienced this spring. “While pollution does indeed have a sizable effect on climate and thus, by extension, aspects of the weather, it takes time for such effects to build up and so this run of good weather is just a coincidence,” he concludes.

That said, one thing that has undeniably been improved by the lockdown is astrophotography – photographs of the night sky, often taken with long exposures. “These long exposures allow the camera to absorb more light and see fainter and fainter objects,” Greg explains.

“Ordinarily, the longer you expose for, the more chance that a stray plane will enter your field of view and ruin your shot. The dramatic reduction in air traffic has made this far less likely, making this field of astronomy slightly easier in the short term.”

So, what highlights has Greg observed, looking out of the window of his westfacing flat? “I’ve had an excellent view of the setting sun and the bright jewel that is the planet Venus shining in the

dusk,” he says. “Around April 24-26, I was also lucky enough to see the young crescent moon, a tiny slither of light that was close to the sun and hidden during the day... Unfortunately, I left my camera in the office, so I don't have any record of the view!”

As a Royal Observatory astronomer, a large part of Greg’s day is ordinarily spent interacting with and educating visitors. Even while housebound, he and his colleagues are endeavouring to keep the lines of communication open where possible.

“Our #ObservatoryOnline Twitter campaign got off to a great start, with videos every Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” he says. “The Monday video is a guide to this week's night sky, while the others cover all sorts of topics in astronomy.” As with the observatory’s regular events, viewers are encouraged to raise any questions they have – in this case via Twitter – and the astronomers will answer them over video.

Meanwhile, the observatory’s education team has been supporting schools and parents with homeschooling activities, an online teaching course and by hosting Q&As with astronomers. There’s also a monthly podcast – Look Up! – aimed at those in the GCSE year group and above. “In it, one of our team will let you know what is going to

be visible in the night sky over the coming month, and they’ll discuss a story or two that has broken in astronomy over the previous month.”

The observatory is also running a free online training course for educators in primary science and homeschooling parents, which runs regularly on the FutureLearn platform.

Then there’s ‘Ask an Astronomer’, a chance for classes to Skype with one of the observatory’s astronomers and ask any burning questions.

Pandemics aside, 2020 is an important anniversary in the world of astronomy. It’s the 30th birthday of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

“Arguably, the HST has been one of the most, if not the most, successful telescope in history,” says Greg.

“It’s able to produce sharper, clearer images, and it can peer deeper into the distant universe and observe fainter objects than almost any ground based telescope,” he explains.

“For research astronomers, the HST is an invaluable tool for scientific study – it's studied distant galaxies, the deaths of stars as supernovae, and identified and characterised exoplanets,” explains the astronomer.

So, what advice would Greg give to anybody looking to use lockdown to get into stargazing? “Stargazing is a fantastic hobby to take up because it requires almost nothing to get started. editorial@weekender.co.uk

You can buy expensive equipment like telescopes, mounts, binoculars and cameras if you really want to, but so much can be done with just the naked eye,” he says. “Use a guide online or a star app on your phone to help acquaint yourself with what you are looking for, or find where to look for something specific,” he suggests.

“Try and identify the patterns of stars in the sky that we call constellations and asterisms, and use them to guide yourself around the sky. But most important of all, do what you enjoy! It doesn't really matter if it's the Plough or the Pleiades if all you want is to see some stars.”

Working as an astronomer at the Royal Observatory requires daily interaction with curious visitors of all ages – something Greg is missing in lockdown. “My greatest joy in this job is being able to communicate directly with the general public and share my enthusiasm for this fantastic topic,” he says. “Whether I will be able to do that again soon or not, we don't yet know.

But when it is safe to, I will be glad to be presenting in our planetarium or at one of our events again.”

Private firms working for the public good in coronavirus outbreak People working for a wide range of private companies have been standing side-byside with public sector staff on the front line during the coronavirus outbreak.

Staff at private sector firms

have been doing their bit to help out communities across the country during the crisis.

This includes employees from many of the large outsourcing firms that the government works with,

who have both shifted their resources to work on other projects and made sure vital services have continued.

Here are just some of the many examples from across the country.

‘Trying to make a difference’ CASE STUDY 1 VENTILATORS AT THE beginning of the Covid 19 crisis, Britain’s hospitals had 8,000 ventilators.

They now have 11,500 - of which more than 1,000 are from the Prime Minister’s Ventilator Challenge.

Ensuring the children of key workers are well fed CASE STUDY 2 FOOD FEEDING THE children of key workers who have still been attending school during the coronavirus crisis has been a significant challenge.

One of the firms that has been helping ensure children are well fed is ISS education, who work with more than 600 education establishments across the country.

They have been providing food hampers packed with all the ingredients families need to cook meals at home for their children Linda Cregan is the food services director for ISS education. She said around 200 of the schools it serves have stayed open to feed vulnerable and key worker children.

“We wanted to make sure we were doing everything possible and making it as easy as possible for schools to find solutions locally to what they needed,” she said. “We have had a mixed bag offering packed lunches, collections, and hot meals.”

One of the establishments they have worked with is the Waterton Academy Trust, which is based in Wakefield.

Linda said: “The trust wanted to be able to provide families with the ingredients that they could then cook the meals at home with for their children.”

The company was already providing services ranging from security through to cleaning, catering, maintenance and portering duties to 11 NHS hospitals, six healthcare facilities, the London Ambulance Service and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service.

The team have shared expertise and resources to help patients and families stay connected through Life Lines, a project which provides a secure virtual-visiting solution for families whose loved ones are being treated in intensive care units during the coronavirus pandemic. It means that even though they can’t visit,

The Life Lines project was set up by critical care consultant Dr Joel Meyer, professor of critical care nursing Professor Louise Rose and Michel Paquet, who developed the aTouchAway app used in the project and is the chief executive officer of Aetonix.

Partners include King’s College London, King’s Health Partners, Aetonix, Bray Leino, Google and BT. Initial funding of £1m was provided by the True Colours Trust and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation.

Q&A with Kerry Tite, founder of local dance school Kerry On Dancing Dance teacher Kerry Tite was understandably devastated when she heard the news that non-essential businesses, like the ballroom and Latin American dance school she’d spent five years building up in south-east London, would have to close to prevent the spread of coronavirus. She bid farewell to her pupils over email and was quietly beginning to worry about her finances. But then she spoke to the team at Blackheath community centre Mycenae House – where she ordinarily holds some of her classes – who explained they’d be running many of their lessons online, and could help Kerry do the same. Two months on and Kerry is offering her full programme of dance classes over Zoom. Holly O’Mahony speaks to Kerry to find out more… finding out little things every day! There are three fabulous teachers who are able to jump in and co-host if, for example, my internet drops.

HOM: Does your online programme differ at all from your in-person classes?

KT: I’m still teaching classes for both adults and kids as well as a few private lessons.

Teaching classes that usually require partner work has been a bit of a challenge, but I think I’ve worked out the best way to go about it now. I tend to teach all the dances in short routines that can be danced solo, and everyone I’m teaching says it's working really well! I also run ‘Ballroom Burn’ classes which are solo ballroom and Latin American Dance classes. It’s like a high energy cross between zumba and line dancing but with ballroom and Latin dance steps.

Holly O’Mahony: How did you get into teaching dance in the first place and what led you to set up your own dance school?

Kerry Tite: My passion for dance and performing began when I was a child taking ballet, tap and disco lessons. I picked up the ballroom and Latin American bug when I was 14 years old and started to attend classes with my nan. It soon became a serious hobby and I spent most of my teenage years covered in fake tan and rhinestones, travelling up and down the country with my dance partners, competing on the open dance circuit.

I later gained a degree in Musical Theatre from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, then spent many years working as a performer and teaching performing arts for other people, before deciding to open up my own ballroom and Latin American dance school. I did the Teacher training exams with The Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance (ISTD) and have been teaching in the Greenwich borough since 2014.

HOM: What types of dance do you teach today and who are your classes open to?

KT: I teach ballroom and Latin American dance. There are 10 dances that fall into these categories: the ballroom dances are the waltz, quickstep, foxtrot, tango and Viennese waltz, and the Latin dances are the cha-cha-cha, rumba, samba, paso doble and the jive. I teach all ages and ability levels – my youngest pupil has just turned 5 and my oldest just turned 80!

HOM: What has been your experience of teaching lessons online so far?

KT: I started with just a couple of lessons to ensure my pupils completed the term they had already paid for. My pupils showed such enthusiasm and said that it cheered them up and gave them something to look forward to. I then decided to offer something daily to help give structure to the day. I also did lots of research online about how to improve teaching dance classes with Zoom. I’m still learning and

The children’s classes are going well, too. Instead of dropping the kids off at a class like they ordinarily would, I’m encouraging parents to get involved and learn a few moves themselves.

HOM: How does pricing vary from your ordinary classes?

KT: I used to charge for a half term or let people pay a slightly more expensive rate for a pay-as-you-go option if they couldn’t commit to a block of classes. Now, the payment system is a lot more flexible. People can pay per lesson, weekly, monthly or per term. If people aren’t able to pay the normal rate, they can make a donation of whatever they are able to afford – if anything at all.

HOM: What's the uptake been like for your online classes so far?

KT: It’s been amazing. My regular pupils are all incredibly supportive. I’m teaching roughly two thirds of the people that used to come to the physical classes. They all enjoy a virtual wave and chat with their friends at the end of the sessions, too. It’s even given my nan and my mum the opportunity to see what I get up to. They both live a long way away so weren’t able to join my classes before.

My nan is especially chuffed because it’s been years since she’s seen me dance.

HOM: Finally, do you think there's perhaps a silver lining to what we're going through?

KT: As hard as this process is, it has given me the chance to evaluate and appreciate what is really important in life. I will never forget the kindness and encouragement people have shown. It has reminded me how important it is to be part of something and to not leave anyone behind, as we are all in this together.

News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

More space for walking and cycling in our town centres The need to maintain social distancing for the foreseeable future and in turn, the reduced capacity on public transport will have a profound influence on how we travel around the borough.

The Mayor of London’s Streetspace plan aims to transform London’s streets to accommodate a potential ten-fold increase in cycling and five-fold increase in walking when lockdown restrictions are eased. Here’s what we’re planning to do to transform the streets of Royal Greenwich.

Our plans so far include: • widening footpaths in town centres • filtering more residential streets to reduce through traffic but maintain access for cyclists, pedestrians and emergency vehicles • creating more School Streets • bringing forward plans for the Greenwich to Woolwich cycle route.

We are focusing on areas we know or expect to be the busiest, for example, town centres, high streets and around green spaces.

We have prioritised Greenwich town centre because of its narrow footways and, in the short term, have widened the footways within the gyratory using temporary barriers.

Our plans for Woolwich are mainly focussed on tackling pinch points on Calderwood St, Thomas St, Wellington St, Woolwich New Road, Vincent Road and Willmount St. Woolwich is the fourth busiest bus hub in London, with 18 bus routes, and presents a big social distancing challenge.

We’re talking to TfL to see what is possible around the bus stops.

In Eltham town centre our priority is to suspend footway parking to make the most of the wide footways and create space to queue at shops and walk along the street. We’ll close off the footway parking with barriers, except

for disabled bays and necessary loading bays.

Protection for cyclists will also be added to the cycle lanes on the high street. If you need to drive to Eltham, there are several car parks in the town centre.

These are just some of the areas where we are planning to make changes. Locations will be prioritised to ensure the maximum benefits for the highest number of pedestrians and cyclists.

The measures will be essential to limit the spread of the virus, but also to give residents the confidence to use local amenities and support local businesses once again.

Residents have been making some good suggestions on social media for things we can do – please keep them coming! Whatever measures we put in place will be focused on limiting the spread of the virus and helping all our residents travel safely around the borough.

Tennis courts to reopen The tennis courts at Blackheath, Eltham Park South, Maryon Park and Plumstead Common opened on Monday 18 May. From Friday 22 May, the courts at Altash Gardens, Bostall Gardens, Fairy Hill Park, Kidbrooke Green and Maryon Park will also be open.

To support social distancing, a reduced number of courts will be available.

Zavi, which translates as ‘rich harvest’, offers an authentic slice of upmarket Turkish dining in the heart of Eltham. Having reviewed the restaurant back in spring 2019, I can heartily recommend the dips: both the cacik (Turkish tzatziki) and hummus are fresh, mild and distinctly homemade, while the star turn is the beetroot, which comes neutralised by homemade yogurt and topped with crunchy walnuts.

Further down the menu, the deepfried calamari is another winner: its thick, meaty rings neither too oily or crispy. Of the mains, the beyti dishes are utterly delicious: minced meats wrapped in warm, moist flatbread, accompanied by a welcome mess of creamy and spicy sauces. The lamb chops come in a generous portion size (four per plate) and are decent in taste, but the hunks of deliciously charcoaled lamb shish – also on the menu – are more delicious. Each main comes with a mountain of yellow rice and cucumber-led salad, which you may find you ignore in order to prioritise the main event.

Supporting our community The Royal Greenwich Community Hub continues to be instrumental in supporting people who are most in need during this time.

Working with partners at Charlton Athletic Community Trust to co-ordinate the effort, we’ve delivered 1,914 food boxes in five weeks, handled more than 43,000 calls for help and thanks to our incredible volunteers there has been a combined total of over 21,000 hours of voluntary time spent helping the community.

Olayinka Aroyeun, who lives in Abbey Wood with his wife and two children, became a volunteer with the Community Hub after being furloughed from his job as a Business Development Manager. He said: “I wanted to give back to the community and knew that vulnerable people would need help. My main volunteer tasks are to pick up and deliver prescriptions from the pharmacy and picking up and delivering people’s shopping.

“This has been a sobering experience.

I remember my first task with the hub was to help an elderly lady in Thamesmead who needed her prescription medication but hadn’t been able to leave the house due to the pandemic. When I delivered her medication she was tearyeyed and so grateful.

“Another lady was self-isolating at home with her kids because she is unwell and they hadn’t had any food for over two days. When I got the call to help her on the Saturday, I accepted and went out immediately to buy her shopping for her. Life is a privilege and a lot of people are struggling – it’s good to offer help where it’s needed.”

Kindness matters It’s Mental Health Awareness Week (1824 May) and this year’s theme is kindness.

Kindness to others and to yourself.

It’s also nine weeks since the Government announced the lockdown and a lot of us will be feeling ‘lockdown fatigue’ and doing the very best to cope with day-to-day life.

Protecting our mental health is central to us coping with the psychological and social impacts of the pandemic. One of the ways that we can do this is show kindness to ourselves and others during this challenging time.

We want to shine a light on the positive things that are coming out of COVID-19 and specifically on acts of kindness. From 100-year-old Captain Tom Moore as he

walked his garden to raise money for the NHS, the mutual aid groups responding to local needs, to our very own volunteers at the Community Hub (to name but a few).

Over the course of this week we’ll be sharing stories on social media about how people are making a huge difference through acts of kindness.

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out a service pipe relay.

2. The Order will come into operation on 8th June 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 5 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading). in Pound Place 4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Messeter Place, Footscray Road and Eltham High Street. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 EXPERIMENTAL PROHIBITION OF MOTOR VEHICLES OUTSIDE SCHOOLS IVOR GROVE, CASTLEFORD AVENUE, INVICTA ROAD, SIEBERT ROAD, INDUS ROAD AND NIGERIA ROAD THE GREENWICH (PROHIBITION OF MOTOR VEHICLES) (SCHOOL STREETS NO.1 2020) EXPERIMENTAL TRAFFIC ORDER 2020 1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) has made the abovementioned Order under sections 9 and 10 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended and will come into operation on 1st June 2020.

2. The general effect of the Order would be, on an experimental basis, to prohibit any motorised vehicle entering certain streets near the schools listed below during Monday - Friday 8:00 - 9:30am and 3:00 - 4:00pm, during term time: a) Wyborne School i) Ivor Grove for its entire length

ii) Castleford Avenue for its entire length b) Invicta School i) Invicta Road for its entire length ii) Siebert Road for its entire length c) Charlton Manor School

i) Indus Road from its junction with Hornfair Road to its junction with Charlton Dene ii) Nigeria Road for its entire length 3. This will be enforced by means of a series of drop-down bollards, which will allow accredited vehicles, disabled badge holders and emergency vehicles access during their hours of operation, at the following locations: a) Ivor Grove at the junction of Footscray Road b) Castleford Avenue at the junction of Cambridge Green c) Invicta Road at the junction of Charlton Road d) Siebert Road at the roundabout on Westcombe Hill e) Indus Road at the junction of Hornfair Road f) Indus Road at the junction of Charlton Dene g) Nigeria Road at the junction of Hornfair Road 4. To view a copy of the Order and/or a statement of the Council’s reasons for making this experimental Order please email Traffic.Team@ royalgreenwich.gov.uk 5. The Council will be considering in due course whether the provisions of the Order should be continued in force indefinitely by means of a permanent Order made under section 6 of the Act, as amended. Any person may object to the making of the permanent Order for the purpose of such indefinite continuation within a period of six months beginning with the day on which the above-mentioned Order came into operation or, if the Order is varied by other Orders, beginning with the day on which the latest variation or modification came into operation.

Any such objection must be made by email to Traffic.Team@royalgreenwich.gov.uk or in writing if this is not possible to the Traffic Team, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ (quoting reference 05-20 School Streets No.1).
