The news you can trust THE VAST majority of the people across the UK have taken the official advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.

People are hungry for accurate information about how to protect themselves, but following the official advice and ignoring the swirling mass of uninformed conjecture, opinion and speculation is not always easy.

However, there are ways to identify who to trust, and who to ignore.

Similarly, there are ways to identify the small but persistent group of unscrupulous individuals who have decided that they want to use the pandemic to try to make financial gain through fraud.

There have been a lot of examples of false information and attempts at fraud.

For example, holding your breath for 10 seconds is not a test for coronavirus, gargling water for 15 seconds is not a cure and phone masts cannot cause coronavirus.

There have also been comments and suggestions from people claiming to be medical experts who are simply not.

The Government has a checklist to help people protect themselves from cyber fraud: Take a breath - a moment - before you part with money or personal information. It sounds simple, but this alone could end up preventing fraud from taking place.

Ensure you are using the latest software, apps and operating systems on your phones, tablets and laptops and update them regularly.

And if you get an unexpected or suspicious email or text message, don’t click on the attachment or message.

Analyse the facts. If something sounds unbelievable, it very well might be.

Independent fact-checking services are correcting false information about coronavirus every day.

RETOUCHED

Watch out for misleading pictures and videos in stories about coronavirus. They might be edited, or show an unrelated place or event.

ERRORS

Look out for mistakes. Errors might mean the information is false. Official guidance about coronavirus will have been carefully checked.

Checklist to help fight cyber fraud Don’t be afraid to challenge messages and messengers. It’s okay to refuse or ignore requests for your money or details if you are suspicious - only criminals will try to rush or panic you.

The police and banks will never ask you to withdraw money or transfer it to a different account. Neither will they ask you to reveal your full banking password or PIN. You can check that requests are genuine by using a known number or email address to contact organisations directly. And if you think you have fallen victim to a scam, then contact your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud.

You can report suspicious texts by forwarding the original message to 7726, which spells SPAM on your keypad.

Journalists are trained to ask right questions Regional newspapers such as this one employ fully qualified journalists who are trained to ask the right questions and share accurate information in a simple and understandable way.

Severndroog Castle in Oxleas Wood is ordinarily a hidden gem of London’s summer music scene. Its Lates, which usually take place in the woodlandshrouded courtyard in front of the castle, giving the events a mystical feeling and see musicians of all genres come to perform to a small, in-the-know crowd. With the castle closed to visitors for now, the team behind the Lates are determined to bring some of that same musical magic to audiences remotely, while hoping to keep the castle in the minds of potential future visitors, writes Holly O’Mahony… www.weekender.co.uk

“But the circumstances have meant live events at the castle are off until July at the earliest.”

hope to do several different things: bring in some much-needed income for the castle and for our artists at this difficult time; keep Severndroog Lates in people’s minds for the shows later in the year, and also keep our online community going,” says Paul.

Noticing how other cultural venues were experimenting with online events, Paul and his fellow trustees decided to trial running Severndroog Lates at Home. The format is largely similar to the live version: weekly Friday night performances (at 8pm) by some of the castle’s regular, much-loved acts.

While many organisations have opted to run their online events via Zoom, which among other pros allows the organiser to have control over who is watching the content, the team at Severndroog Castle have decided to broadcast the live performances via Facebook Live. “We did some research and decided that, because we have a lot of followers on Facebook already, this was where Severndroog Lates at Home should be,” explains Paul.

“It wasn’t something we’d ever done before, but we made the commitment that if the audience couldn’t come to the castle, we’d go to them with weekly music and dance,” explains Paul, adding that these online gigs are supplementary to the live shows they still hope to run later in the year.

Instead of selling tickets – which even to the live shows were always reasonably priced – the team are asking for donations of £5+ from those who tune in to enjoy the events from home. “With these events, we

of our Severndroog audience as possible over the weeks,” he adds.

The hour-long Lates at Home kicked off on April 24 with a motown night from the musical duo and Severndroog regulars, Razamataz.

“We had over 600 viewings during the show… and in the days afterwards we had 700 streams to add to that,” beams Paul. Since then, Severndroog Lates has hosted a salsa night with Ify Hague of Salsa Motion (May 1) and an opera Late with Tamara von Stein (May 8).

Coming up on May 15, audiences can catch a jazz night with musician Jess De Giudici, who will be ‘paying homage to the ladies of jazz, in a programme of vintage jazz and swing from the twenties to the sixties’.

The following week on May 22, Severndroog regular Sabrina Bell will be picking up the mic, performing her signature ‘upbeat classic pop’ tracks.

Also scheduled, for May 29, is a dance class with Rachel Sparks, who will be teaching and demonstrating a range of dances suitable for dancing alone or with others during lockdown.

If you’re yet to tune in, there’s still plenty coming up to enjoy. “Right now we are programming up until the end of June, as we hope it will be permitted to start running small live events after that date, but of course, if restrictions continue, then we will extend Severndroog Lates at Home,” says Paul. “Each online Late at Home is about an hour and one of our guiding principles in putting together the programme has been to make it eclectic, so we can reach and entertain as many

There are also further projects in the pipeline for when the castle is able to reopen to the public. “Just as lockdown was beginning to happen, we were developing some very exciting stuff with the Lewisham-based immersive theatre company Tea Dance for Little People, and we can’t wait to launch that,” reveals Paul. “Lockdown also temporarily halted a project with pinhole camera photographer Wayne Foskett – we sought him out when we spotted his extraordinary and beautiful photographs of Greenwich

Park – and once [social] distancing is no longer required, he will be installing a pop-up darkroom in the castle to run workshops for our visitors.” In the meantime, without the footfall of visitors, the castle is at risk of losing the funds it needs to keep its doors open. Severndroog Castle was saved by members of the community once before in 2014 and now its trustees are asking for the public to help protect it again. Those keen to help can visit the venue’s website, where a ‘Save Severndroog’ scheme is running.

“What everyone involved in Severndroog is longing for most is to be able to throw the doors open once again and have members of the public back inside the building,” concludes Paul. “Unfortunately, that’s not guaranteed right now.

This is a critical time for the castle and that’s why we are asking for the community to help save Severndroog for a second time.”

They would have patrolled the streets at night during ‘black out’ making sure that no lights were visible. If a light could be seen, then bombing planes could get their bearings. Three dancers on the challenge of staying fit during lockdown

The government-imposed lockdown to prevent the further spread of Covid-19 has been a challenging experience for us all. While for many of us non-essential workers this has meant working from a makeshift desk and having regular Zoom meetings with colleagues, for those in highly physical professions, such as dancers, lockdown has necessitated turning homes into studios and gyms, and trying to practise movements that typically require a large amount of space in often tight confines, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Unperturbed, dancers are finding resourceful ways to continue their intense and rigorous training practices while stuck at home – ensuring that as soon as curtains across the country are able to rise once more, they’re able to rise and perform with them. Here to tell us more about it are three dancers from Trinity Laban’s prestigious Transitions Dance Company: Sarah Hirsch, Joe Mathew and Lewis Sharp.

Holly O’Mahony: As a dancer, what's been the hardest thing about the lockdown and continuing to train from the confines of your home?

Lewis Sharp: For me, the hardest thing is ensuring I have adequate space for technique classes and workshops. I’ll find myself relaxing on the sofa watching the TV, and then I’m reorganising furniture for my ballet class, trying not to hit the lights and making do with using furniture as a barre. Thankfully, my family are great at understanding.

I’m also fortunate to have a garden, but it isn’t ideal in bad weather!

Joe Mathew: As a high velocity, fast-paced mover, I’ve found it a little unnerving to have less space to dance. I miss the ability to jump, glide and throw myself across the floor without the fear of banging my body into the corner of any furniture.

company members and teachers in person. Remote lessons have been surprisingly good, but nothing beats that studio vibe where you are surrounded by so much energy and movement that it becomes infectious.

I miss company rehearsals of our repertoire pieces and also performing on stage – there is nothing quite like it.

HOM: You're used to devoting hours of the day to rigorous training.

Without your studio and fellow dancers, how much of your usual routine are you able to uphold?

JM: Initially, I felt like my routine was gone. But after a week of slothing about in the house, I found myself wanting to experiment, create and play. Now that we have online classes, things are a little more streamlined.

Although I don’t have my original routine, I’ve found creative input from anywhere keeps me engaged.

SH: I am still training rigorously, trust me! I work on my conditioning every morning, alternating strength and cardio training and I do at least one dance lesson every day, alternating between ballet and contemporary, depending on the class schedule provided by Trinity Laban. I do one new class each week as this helps diversify my training and keep it fresh.

This is also a time to watch all those performances and shows you didn’t have the time and money for – Sadler’s Wells, Marquee TV, the Royal Opera House and the Barbican Theatre are among those streaming past performances online.

Find your pace. You might just end up learning a lot more than you thought.

SH: Aside from travelling to see my family, I cannot wait to get back to dancing on stage, where dancers belong. That and being able to dance in a big studio where I can jump high and run far without knocking down anything!

HOM: What are you most looking forward to, dance wise, once lockdown lifts?

JM: I’ll be on the lookout for professional dance auditions when things start going back to normal again and I’d also love to start teaching classes. But most of all, I’m excited

LS: I’m looking forward to returning to Trinity Laban in person to take part in class and rehearsals with my peers. I’m sad that this situation has affected the remainder of my time at the school I love, but I know I will always be able to return to the Trinity Laban community.

out. We are using digital platforms for technique classes and workshops where I can take-part in real-time with my teachers and fellow dancers. It has meant I don’t feel too isolated while dancing at home.

HOM: Why is it so important for dancers to keep fit during lockdown?

JM: Dancing is a physical activity where your body needs to respond to your mind just as much as the other way around.

In lockdown, it’s like looking after a machine so it doesn’t get rusty.

SH: Dancers spend so much time honing and refining techniques. We need to maintain these so we don’t regress. We need to do all we can so that when we get the chance, we can get back to work in the post-Covid world with healthy bodies and minds intact.

HOM: Have you learnt any new techniques while practicing at home? Or have there been any weird and wonderful moments?

LS: Dancing in the garden has been interesting. I don’t think my neighbours know I’m a dancer, so they have been intrigued as to why I’m throwing myself around outside. Also, Indian dance is an interest of mine, so I’ve been spending some time learning Indian dance techniques.

JM: I’ve rediscovered the iPhone’s slomo feature so I keep throwing my phone around to see what sort of crazy improvised visual I might find after I stop recording.

SH: My living room has become multifunctional. It’s now a dance, yoga and filming studio, a gym and my partner’s office – you name it! I’ve been trying to learn Flamenco and the Japanese Butoh dance. It’s so easy to find great lessons online, so I’m making the most of it. Best of all, I’ve been able to support the dance community. As well as taking part in online classes, I’ve led a few weekly lessons since the start of lockdown, including teaching toddler ballet and an adult class in contemporary dance for charity.

HOM: What advice would you give to a fellow dancer struggling to maintain their practice while at home?

LS: Try not to feel overwhelmed and pressured to do absolutely everything. Be realistic and do what you enjoy. Whatever your practice is, be creative with how you engage with it.

Take some time to read, watch videos, or listen to podcasts that relate to your interests or allow you to discover something new.

SH: Remember it’s okay that dance does not feel the same as what you are used to in the studio, but don’t let that stop you. This is an amazing opportunity to slow down and www.weekender.co.uk

Baba G’s Bhangra Burgers You might recall the name Baba G’s. The Indian fusion pop-up won the BBC’s Million Pound Menu initiative back in 2018. Today, Baba G’s has four London sites, including one at street food hub Pop Brixton, which delivers to New Cross. The offering? Burgers with an Indian twist (the patties come served in a buttermilk naan and nestled against a crushed onion bhaji) and ‘naanwiches’ (yep, sandwiches served up in naans instead of regular bread). History

The Granite Wharf Me and my mum and the Globe

A couple of weeks ago I described how Coles Child leased land on the Greenwich riverside from Morden College and used it to build houses and factories. Walking down river from Ballast Quay through Riverside Gardens, we first passed Coles Child’s own coal wharf, which was later know as Lovell’s Wharf. His next wharf was ‘Granite Wharf’ and I am very glad that one of the blocks of flats in ‘Riverside Gardens’ is now “Granite House”.

Mary Mills Records show that Granite Wharf was leased by Coles Child to Mowlem, Burt and Freeman in 1852. John Mowlem had worked in the Dorset stone quarries and in 1823 founded the famous contracting firm.

Mowlem’s main yard was on Millbank at Westminster and their Greenwich wharf was ‘the stone yard’. Records tell us about ‘substantial buildings’ there and on the 1869 Ordnance map it is marked as ‘Stone yard’ The map shows two tracks of rails crossing the yard and there is a slip into the river as well as ‘mooring posts’ and a crane.

When I was seven we went on holiday to Bournemouth and most of all I remember the visit to the Great Globe at Swanage. I still have the photograph my dad took of me and my mum at the Globe but obviously I had no idea I was to return to there fifty years later as part of my research on the Greenwich riverside.

John Mowlem eventually retired back to Swanage in Dorset and the firm was managed by his nephew, George Burt.

But Mowlem took back to Swanage an extraordinary collection of bits and pieces from the London streets.

Park on a hillside above the town. The Globe and the various things which surround it are well worth a visit.

The whole experience is extremely bizarre. At th top of the cliff is a strange mock castle and all around are bollards, stone tables, boundary stones, etc. many taken from London streets. The Globe itself is carved with a map of the world and various astronomical statements about The Sun, Moon and Earth. There are also stone tablets carved with homilies on the subject of Temperance, Prudence and so on as well as ‘clock times of the world’ , ‘convexity of the ocean’ and much else.

Among the postcards on sale at Durleston is one which has been identified a picture of Greenwich – it comes from an unpublished history of John Mowlem which I have not seen. The picture shows the Great Globe under construction at Mowlem’s yard at Granite Wharf..

Two stone carvers sit on top of the Globe, behind it is a great crane – perhaps the one shown on the map – and in front three figures. That on the right has been named as John Mowlem Burt, George Burt’s son.

The Globe seems to have been the idea of George Burt who, a few years earlier, had commissioned a smaller www.weekender.co.uk

granite globe which is now on display in Beaulieu. The Great Globe is made of 15 pieces of Portland stone – held together with granite dowels. It was taken from Greenwich to Swanage in sections on one of Mowlem’s sailing vessels and erected at Durleston by a Dorset builder. Whether the stone was taken originally from Swanage to Greenwich for carving is not known – but the expense of carting 40 tons of stone between the two must have been considerable.

Until the new flats were built at what is now Riverside Gardens a roadway ran from Banning Street to the river along the boundary between Lovell’s and Granite Wharfs. This was known as Paddock Place, later it was Cadet Place and it has now vanished. The wall of Granite Wharf along this pathway was simply extraordinary, consisting of what appears to be pieces of random stone, some of it set up as a sort of blocked up gateway.

Leding geologist, Eric Robinson, took an interest in this wall – dubbing it ‘Cyclopean’. He said the stone from which its was made was probably part of the stockpile which Mowlem’s had in the yard and he thought that stone quarried in Dorset was shipped to Greenwich to be held here until it was needed elsewhere. It would then be shipped out by Thames Barge. The wall included, he said: ‘White Portland Stone, some of it dressed with the stone pick, pink and red sandstone

– not necessarily as hard as the Coal Measures York Stone - they are joined by ‘Bluestone’ (Diorite) ... at either side the blocks sit at unusual angles with an infill of angular pieces of dark bluestone – this dark stone came from Guernsey in the Channel Islands and was much used in kerbs and cobbles’. It is pointed out this miscellany of stone pieces might serve as a museum of the sort of stones which made up the stone cartage trade in the English Channel – ‘just add some granites’. He continued ‘look at the cobbles and smaller cube setts in the entrance to the yard and you see all of these granitic rocks polished by cart wheels and cars’.

So, what happened next? As development plans proceeded I began to put under the noses of planners and developers many ideas for retention of items on the site, I was ignored until I pointed out that this one site has academic approval from a famous geologist, not just from me. So it was agreed and part of the planning consent was that the stone from the wall must be saved and re-erected as a feature on the site. Now I am sure that the masons who worked for the developer did what they thought was right – but no one seems to have shown them what the old wall had looked like, and what was important about it. By the time the developer proudly showed us the new wall they had tidied up all

the rough stone, squared it up and made a nice neat looking wall – but cyclopean no more. They had also put up a nice little plaque about it entirely taken from Wikipedia.

Thanks to the Greenwich Society we managed to get that changed.

I only hope Eric Robinson has never seen the rebuilt wall. He lives in Wachet in Somerset, and if you go to Wachet station, which has nice preserved trains, there is a replica of our Cadet Place wall. Only a small win, but better than nothing.

Granite Wharf continued in use right into the 2000s. By then it was used

by Tarmac and there were always boats calling. The riverside stretch along the front of the wharf had a concrete awning to stop gravel and stones from their overhead conveyor falling on to walkers.

They eventually moved out, apparently very reluctantly, to Charlton, and the developers moved in to build flats.

Lockdown Parties bring young people together during pandemic

Young Greenwich, the youth service Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) delivers on behalf of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, is hosting virtual parties over Facebook and Instagram.

The first Lockdown Party was held on Friday 3 April, and the concept has proved popular with young people in the Borough ever since.

The live sessions take place following COVID-19 causing youth hubs to temporarily close from 21 March, and they help keep young people engaged with their youth workers and friends they have made at hubs.

The parties take place twice a week, with a parent-focused one on Wednesday via the Young Greenwich Facebook page, and Friday’s youthfocused one held on Instagram.

Youth workers play and dance to music and take song requests.

A chat function allows participants to socialise with one another, while they can also join in more directly via video call to speak to the youth workers hosting.

Families and young people have responded positively to the live sessions, with a number of young people commenting about how they miss the youth hubs but expressing positive feedback about the parties nonetheless.

Post-16 student Miriam said: “The live stream was great and lots of great tunes. I will definitely be watching again next week”.

The Facebook live takes place each Wednesday evening from 5pm-8pm, while the Instagram live takes place every Friday evening from 6pm-9pm.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make three Orders to accommodate carriageway resurfacing works or carriageway maintenance.
