While Greenwich Theatre remains closed to the public, rest assured there’s plenty going on behind the scenes. In fact, it’s been an exceptionally busy month for James Haddrell, the theatre’s artistic director, writes Holly O’Mahony...

No sooner had he locked the doors to the building itself, complying with government measures to prevent the further spread of Covid-19, than he was looking into ways to bring the theatre’s content online. The following week, James announced the launch of Greenwich Connects, an online programme of weekly interactive theatre opportunities.

“In a situation like this, any publicfacing arts organisation has a choice about how to respond: they can either close their doors and send out a ‘see you when it’s all over’ type message or they can think creatively about how to continue to engage with their artists and their audiences,” says

James on his decision to keep the theatre’s presence alive online at this time. “That’s what we’re striving to do – to maintain a programme of online performances and artists’ development activities, so that people feel creative, continue to learn and continue to be entertained,” he adds. “Putting together Greenwich Connects was a complete team effort, working out what we wanted to offer, who we wanted to offer it to, and how we could make it work.”

Four weeks on and Greenwich Connects is thriving. The weekly schedule begins with Monologue Mondays, a chance to watch selftaped monologues by budding

professional actors (or amateurs) that are streamed on Greenwich Theatre’s social media channels.

“While we welcome tapes from anyone, our hope is that [Monologue Mondays] provides a creative outlet for professional actors,” says James. “It is as much about offering them a showcase opportunity as it is about giving audiences something to watch,” he adds, pointing out that while the actors won’t get paid for submitting their work, part of his job will be making sure these tapes get seen by casting directors and agents.

“Actors all have monologues ready for auditions, or pieces that they learn for practice, so at a time when

nobody is able to create a whole show or to perform on stage, we decided to offer a way to share those monologues instead,” says James. “Wouldn’t it be amazing if, every week, an actor who’s struggled to find representation secured an agent, or an actor was shortlisted for a big acting job later in the year? As a sector we have to find ways to secure positive outcomes from this situation, and this could be one of them.”

Then there’s Wednesday Wisdom, which sees an expert from the theatre industry take over Greenwich Theatre’s Instagram account for a Q&A session. From learning how to run a tip-top PR campaign to the ins and outs of working as a professional theatre director, the programme covers all angles of working in the industry. “So many of the artists we support are at an early point in their careers,” says James on his decision to launch the scheme. “I usually spend a lot

of my week meeting with artists and answering questions, so we decided to take that programme online.”

On Flashback Fridays, you can watch some of Greenwich Theatre’s greatest past performances, including acclaimed 2012 productions of School for Scandal and The Duchess of Malfi. Tune in to the theatre’s Facebook page every Friday at 7:30pm and you can enjoy a night at the theatre without leaving your sofa. “We will also be offering a range of our partners’ productions to watch for free,” adds James.

Audiences can look forward to When The Eye Has Gone by the Roughhouse Theatre, My Love Lies Frozen In The Ice by Dead Rabbits Theatre Company and GULP!, a production for families by the Bone Ensemble.”

Finally, there’s Short Play Submission Sundays, a chance for writers to pen a short piece (no longer than 15 minutes) around a particular theme, to be submitted to the theatre by the following Sunday. James and his team will select their favourites, offering the authors the chance to have their work performed as an

online table reading – or even at the theatre itself once it’s reopened.

“New writing initiatives are incredibly important, not only to writers but to the sector as a whole,” affirms the director. “While we’re all in lockdown, the performance evenings may not exist, but we are still looking for material to produce in the future – and at the same time, for anyone who is, or who aspires to be, a writer, having a reason to stretch your imagination and actually sit down and write is going to help you fend off the pressures of isolation.”

Greenwich Theatre’s busy online programme is certainly enough to keep audiences entertained, inspired and connected, but these free-to-enjoy activities won’t help fund the theatre through the lockdown. Is James concerned about its financing?

“This has been a massive test for everyone in theatre. For me, it was quite emotional to close the theatre building. I’ve been working at Greenwich Theatre in a variety of roles since 2001, and

I have never seen it dark like this,” he admits. “Similarly, calling the producers of the shows lined up for the months ahead – including the annual Greenwich Children’s Theatre Festival – was painful; many of them have lost whole tours, having invested in the creation of the shows already, so it’s tough,” he adds.

“Yes, this is going to be an incredibly hard time for us financially. We are certainly asking any members of the audience who had tickets booked for shows that have been either postponed or cancelled to consider donating those tickets back to us instead of taking a refund,” he suggests. “However, we are also encouraging anyone who would like to support us through this time to buy a Friend’s Membership – which means they’ll be able to come and see shows for half-price as soon as we’re up and running again, and which will help us with cash-flow now. Supporters can also participate in our Buy A Brick campaign and permanently add their name to the fabric of the theatre, helping to ensure that it is still there for years to come.”

As optimistic as he’s been resourceful, James is determined to find a positive in all of this.

“I think the theatre industry is a well-bonded community of people but as we’re also all running businesses, or developing careers, we can become overly competitive.

In an incredibly short time, I’ve witnessed that competitive spirit disappear completely,” he says.

“Artists are supporting each other, online collaborations are developing and people are making plans for the future. Nothing will stop us all trying to produce exceptional art, but I suspect that this whole experience will remind us that we can do that together, not in competition with one another.”

News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

Community spirit stronger than ever as volunteers rally round the vulnerable The Royal Borough of Greenwich has launched a major new initiative to support residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Over a thousand people have come forward to offer their support and many have already taken to the streets to help vulnerable people who need it most.

Working with partners at Charlton Athletic Community Trust to coordinate the effort, an existing council call centre has doubled its capacity to create the new ‘Community Hub’.

Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Council, who visited the Hub on Thursday (pictured) said: “There are going to be many difficult days ahead and we are all going to need to pull together and dig deep to support and protect the most vulnerable people in our communities.

That’s why we are working with charities, voluntary organisations, businesses and partners, to do as much as we can to help.

Our team of volunteers are already starting to make a real difference.”

John Butcher (pictured) was the first volunteer to start supporting local residents via the council’s campaign. He said: “I delivered a letter, did shopping trips with Charlton Athletic Community Trust and I’ve also been helping someone sort out their energy bill and put money on their card.

Everyone needs to pull together, and if you’re able to help, you should volunteer. It’s just about working together if you’re able to.”

How to work, school and live under one roof

Peckham productivity coach Karen Eyre-White shares her tips on staying productive during the Coronavirus outbreak The dog wants feeding. Your son is supposed to be following his lesson plan but you’re pretty sure that’s Fortnite you can hear rather than French vocab. Your other half needs to go on a conference call in twenty minutes.

Life seems to have turned upside down in a matter of weeks, and yet you’ve still got work which needs doing. The question is: how on earth are you meant to get anything done right now?

As we become a nation of homeworkers, home-schoolers, homeeverything-ers, families across the country are trying to get their heads round how the entirety of our life, 24/7, can happen under one roof without us all totally losing the plot. And that’s in addition to the work, financial and health worries many of us are facing.

It’s a unique challenge even for someone like me, who helps people to get things

done for a living. I’m a productivity coach, and this is an experience that none of the people and businesses I work with have ever had to grapple with before. There is no magic bullet, yet even in this new reality, there are steps we can take to organise ourselves and our time to help us get everything we need to done and still stay sane.

The first priority is to work out a household schedule. You won’t get this right first time, so don’t over-complicate it – just give something a try. If you’ve got kids and you’re sharing childcare with someone else, agree a basic schedule of when you’re each on duty.

Then sit down with the kids and devise a timetable for what activities they’ll do when (learning time, exercise time etc.). Plan out when household chores are going to be done, and don’t forget to build in downtime for everyone.

Next up: find yourself a specific place to work. Ideally, this will be somewhere warm and light, away from distractions, but the most important thing is to choose one place and only work there.

Your brain will start to associate that place with work, making it easier to focus. It’ll also make it easier for everyone else to know when you’re working and not available. Make your space as appealing as possible and have everything you need to hand.

Decide on your working hours and stick to them. To work from home effectively, we need to separate home and work in our mind. It helps us to do this if we develop some predictability about when we’re working and when we’re not.

Aim to start and finish at roughly the same time each day, and don’t forget to build in breaks during the day as well.

health control and keeps us motivated, so set yourself up to succeed. Write a short, realistic, list of things to do each work day and celebrate when you achieve it. If you’re yearning for connection with your colleagues, pair up with someone and share your list with them at the beginning of the day then update them on your progress at the end of the day. Accountability is a powerful motivating force.

Finally, make the weekends feel different. The rhythm of a working week following by a more relaxed weekend is important to maintain in these unsettling times. Think about a Friday night activity or weekend breakfast which helps everyone to click in to weekend mode. Cover up your work area, stay away from your laptop, and try to relax.

There is no magic bullet, yet even in this new reality, there are steps we can take to organise ourselves and our time to help us get everything we need to done and still stay sane.

From the edge of things right up to Greenwich Power Station

We must continue on along the riverside, past Trinity almshouses, and up to the bulk of Greenwich Power Station and its huge jetty. Clearly this is industrial. However we are on the edge of an complex and interesting area, and although there will be a lot more about this once we get to Anchor Iron Wharf, we need to look at some of it in relation to the power station site. editorial@weekender.co.uk

We are on the edge of things here – on the edge of the lands that the Saxon Princess left to St.Peter’s Abbey in Ghent, which means we are also on the edge of the Morden College Estate – the Blackheath based charity which owns so much of this area. It is also the edge of an early 18th century industrial empire –and, of course, the Greenwich Meridian runs through the Power station itself and the line of it is marked on the riverside path in special paving. More of all this next time.

Highbridge, as we have seen, was once the site of some rather nice riverside houses, - as Julian Watson, for years our local history librarian, says ‘rather smart’ - homes of courtiers and the like.

The most easterly was owned, in the late middle ages, by John Gunthorpe.

I mention him because he was typical of these meritocrats. He was a monk – although monks are supposed to be in monasteries not living in their own rather grand house on the riverside.

Among other things Gunthorpe was appointed to a high office of state by Richard III and kept it under Henry

VII, post Bosworth. He undertook the sort of roles we would now assign to very, very senior civil servants.

Eventually Gunthorpe’s house was demolished and in its place in 1647 was built another palatial residence. It went through various hands but, as royalty left the palace, so the courtiers too left Greenwich and in 1704 the house was bought and lived in by an industrialist.

The story of the Crowley warehouses in Greenwich really belongs in the next section of riverside but Sir Ambrose himself lived was in what was by then called Crowley House. The Crowleys had begun in the Black Country with small scale iron working but Ambrose had risen and risen and by the time he moved to Greenwich he was a wealthy man with a position in the City of London Corporation. In 1707 he was knighted.

His son also lived at Crowley house but his widow moved out and it became an office building with space in it to house the site manager. In 1782 the Crowleys handed most of the business over to Isaiah Millington and he too lived at

Crowley House. In 1821 Elizabeth Pearson from the Deptford copperas owning family recorded in her diary that she visited the house because ‘our good old friend Mrs, Millington died this morning in her 89th year.’ By 1850 the Millingtons too had gone and in 1856 Crowley House was demolished. More about this next time under Anchor Iron Wharf.

After this the site became a depot and stable for horse tram operators. It is said that this was initially the Pimlico, Peckham and Greenwich Street Tramway which had been set up in 1870 and taken over by the London Tramways Company on its second day. Soon after that a legal dispute arose, initiated by the Greenwich local authority, as to whether tramway companies should pay rates to the local authority for its street rails. The result was a ruling that as the sole occupier of the rails they were liable for rates, a decision which is said to have influenced

showing the power station chimneys were sometimes altered to show structures which had never ever been built. A Committee of Enquiry was appointed and as a result of their recommendations two of the chimneys were built at a reduced height – as can still be seen today.

The Greenwich depot is said to have been opened in 4th March 1871 by the Pimlico, Peckham and Greenwich Street Tramways although a newspaper report of 1882 describes it as ‘near completion’ and says that a line has just been laid from Trafalgar Road. It is said to have included a stable which was the largest of all London tramways and held 1,000 horses. It was taken over by the London Tramways Co. in 1873 and by the London County Council on January 1st 1899. The County Council was keen to electrify the tram system and do away with the horses. It is said that they converted the depot to Conduit Electric in 1904.

The County Council had plans to build a large generating station in

Camberwell but then decided to close the Greenwich tram depot and use the site for a power station. It was a better site because of its handy river access for coal supplies. They also took over a number of other properties in the area including the Golden Anchor pub which was on the corner of Hoskins Street (only then it was called Bennett Street) which had belonged to the City of London Brewery. Like other riverside pubs it had bay windows facing the river, and it is possible it was in a much older house.

The new power generating station was large enough to supply the entire tram net work and became one of the largest power stations in the country.

It was designed in house by the LCC’s Architects Department and in 1906 was estimated to cost £900,000.

Overall in charge was the chief officer

of Tramway, A.L.C.Fell – Felltram Way in Charlton is named after him.

A dispute arose however over the height of the chimneys – and this has popularly been ascribed to the Astronomer Royal up the hill in the Royal Observatory complaining about problems caused to his instrumentation. It appeared that the observatory had not been consulted on the building of this large generating station directly on the Greenwich Meridian. This whole story and the ensuing storm in the press has been described in detail by Graham Dolan in a number of recent talks and presentations and is on the Royal Observatory web site www.royalobservatorygreenwich. org/articles.php?article=1243. It is a fascinating story and rather different from the popular version. Graham has unearthed all sorts of interesting details – like, for instance, that postcards put out

There have been many modifications and changes to the Power Station over the past 110 years. In the 1920s the original engines were replaced and in 1930 there was more modernisation and the ownership was passed from the London County Council to the London Passenger Transport Board. It was modernised again in the early 1970s and converted from coal to oil and gas. It then became a back-up station to the then London Transport Power Station at Lots Road in Chelsea. In 1998 Lots Road was closed –and has since been more or less demolished. London Underground began to get its power from the National Grid and Greenwich became the emergency backup station. Since then there have been various plans put forward which would use some of the vacant space within the building and use its capacity to generate power – but perhaps in a different sort of way.

It is a good looking building and inside are vast and dramatic spaces – modern equipment takes up much less space than its early 20th century counterparts.

It has decorative external features –like the rainwater heads – and a lodge. It is however a ‘security’ space which limits who is able to see it and what can be done there. Its internal spaces and the history of power generation in them have been described by Peter Guillery in great detail and anyone interested should read his article (details below).

and hideous. Recent enquiries about demolishing it have met with resistance from the Trinity Almshouses next door, as apparently it does wonders for the acoustics at their garden music events.

There is also a vast and unused coaling jetty through which 1,000 tons of coal a day was one loaded. Various people have suggested uses for it, but it has no external access points, although that, of course, could be remedied.

I know a lot of people don’t like the power station and think it is inappropriate near ‘Royal Greenwich’. Which leads to a question as to why they think all the activities in ‘Royal Greenwich’ and/or the Royal Hospital; were either beautiful or sanitary? The power station is a handsome building although it would be better if they removed the oil tanks! It is probably one of the oldest power stations in the world and is still usefully performing its original functions – although it has swapping trams for underground trains.

Isn’t it something Greenwich should be proud of - one of the great buildings of Greenwich. (Anyway we understand that it would cost an absolute fortune to replace, much more than the value of the site it sits on). Stop knocking it!

Volunteers aid CACT & RBG with COVID-19 response Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) is one of the organisations commissioned to deliver major aspects of the COVID-19 response in the Royal Borough of Greenwich (RBG).

RBG has teamed up with the community sector to ensure volunteers are able to help vulnerable residents during this time.

Royal Greenwich launched an initiative to support residents following the COVID-19 outbreak, helping CACT and a range of organisations deliver essentials to people across Greenwich.

CACT is working closely with partners such as GCDA, METRO GAVS and Volunteer Centre Greenwich, and a number of CACT staff have been out in the community picking up shopping and prescriptions, delivering them to vulnerable residents who are unable to leave their homes due to COVID-19.

John Butcher, a Road Safety Officer for RBG, has been volunteering with CACT and helping staff with deliveries.

John said: “Everyone needs to pull together, and if you’re able to help, you should volunteer. It’s just about working together if you’re able to.”

There’s a number of ways for people to get involved with volunteering.

People can sign up to RBG’s Community Hub volunteering scheme on volunteer.royalgreenwich.gov.uk.

Residents in the Royal Borough of Greenwich who need help because they are vulnerable, can call the Greenwich Community Hub on 0800 470 4831 to speak to a friendly advisor. The line is open from 8.30am to 6pm seven days a week.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out cover replacement works.

The Order will come into operation on 12th April 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 2 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from proceeding left into Anchor and Hope Lane from Woolwich Road (Eastbound).

Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via Woolwich Road (Eastbound), U-Turn at the roundabout with Gallon Close, Woolwich Road (Westbound) and Right into Anchor and Hope Lane. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
