Drag explored at the Tramshed Following a raucous Late event at this year’s VAULT Festival, theatre and cabaret company Pecs Drag Kings are coming to the Tramshed in Woolwich, bringing with them a day-long event exploring Drag Kings in the morning and Drag Queens in the afternoon. Open to ‘ladies, gents and non-binary’, the event hopes to arm participants with the basic principles to help them on their own drag path. Drag King & Queen is a collaboration with multi-talented drag and burlesque sensation Dolly Trolley.

Head to Charlton House for an afternoon of tea, cake and dancing. The tea dance begins with an hour-long workshop with host Peter Meager, in which beginners get to grips with the moves of the waltz and cha-cha-cha. The event proper begins at 2pm and features ballroom and latin music, too. Both the workshop and dance welcome all ages and levels of experiences, and there’s no need to bring a partner (but you’re welcome to!).

Greenwich Theatre presents: Thunder Road

It’s Saturday Night Fever at the Churchill Over 40 years since its cinema release, Saturday Night Fever descends on the Churchill Theatre as a ‘spectacularly reimagined’ music and dance extravaganza. Based on Nik Cohn’s 1975 musical and John Badham’s 1977 film, Saturday Night Fever follows Brooklyn lad Tony Manero, who escapes the harsh realities of his working class life every weekend at the local discotheque. Adapted for the stage by Robert Stigwood and Bill Oakes, this new version pays homage to the John Travolta classic, while offering new choreography, drama and music (yep, that means more of your favourite hits by the Bee Gees).

Pitched as ‘part quintessentially British first aid training course, part Thelma and Louise’, RedCape Theatre’s Thunder Road is certainly an intriguing offering. The play tells the story of two women, Maureen and Sylvie, who pack up their medicap supplies and drive off into the sunset, waving goodbye to darkness and disappointment in the rear view mirror. But when things take an unexpected turn in a Travelodge, what was originally meant to be a two-day trip accelerates into the road trip of a lifetime. See this bold and dark comedy for yourself at Greenwich Theatre.

Become a victim of a rapidly spreading virus… at Greenwich Theatre

‘When a mysterious and fiercely contagious virus starts spreading among a major city’s population, causing all infected victims to lose their sight, the government takes emergency action and isolates those affected in unprepared quarantine facilities.’ While this might read like an extract from the blurb of a yet-to-be-written book about the worrisome Coronavirus outbreak, it’s actually the premise of The White Plague, a show on at Greenwich Theatre this week. Through the stories of five infected strangers left to fend for themselves, the show allows its limited number of audience members (60100 per show) to experience ‘white blindness’ in a city beset by an epidemic, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Theatre The immersive – and a little terrifying sounding – production is the work of Ferodo Bridges, a collective of 15 artists from nine different countries headed up by founding member Alexander Raptotasios, who is also writer-director of the show. What can audiences expect from experiencing a show without their sight? “It’s not total darkness, but the audience experiences it in a state of white blindness – meaning there is a lot of light but participants can see nothing else but white,” explains Alexander. “It can be interpreted in various ways, but in practical terms it helps people not feel claustrophobic or unsafe.”

Alexander founded the company back in 2012 with a goal creating interdisciplinary performance work and functioning as a platform for London artists with no support or space to put on work. Today, Ferodo Bridges has found its niche as a company specialising in immersive productions with an international perspective, always with an aim of creating intimacy and proximity between audience and performers.

“We want to create encounters and opportunities to shift perspectives and to foster debate during a show,” Alexander explains. “We use strange spaces, interactive performance, old plays, new writing, pop culture and politics to create a mix that might get it right,” he says. “We also want to make work that can be taken around the country and reach smaller communities, but also to go abroad and speak to different cultures.”

With Coronavirus continuing to spread across the world at an alarming rate, The White Plague certainly feels timely. But the show was not developed in reaction to the current outbreak. The company first staged it in Athens back in November 2017.

Alexander believes stories about dystopian viral epidemics will always have the power to pique our interest. “I think there will always be situations like these,” he says. “A natural or man-made disaster creates a crisis in society; people are victimised, selfishness prevails, a lot of innocent people die and in the end we figure out that the panic we spread caused more damage than the ‘threat’ itself,” he adds, referencing the casual racism against Asian people – from memes on the internet to abuse on the streets – since the Coronavirus outbreak began.

As for The White Plague, Alexander says that films, novels and stories of epidemics were all forms of inspiration. “The idea of a quarantined facility is ideal for drama – everyone is too close to each other and emotions are extreme. It’s an obvious and great example of how you marginalise and then victimise and group of people within a society,” he says. “The whole setup is essentially similar to refugee camps in Greece and the concentration camps of WWII in those regards.”

Alexander moved to London from Athens when he was 17, and studied at Brunel University and later at St. Mary’s in Richmond, where he fell in love with physical theatre and met leading practitioners in the field from companies including

Complicite and New International Encounter (NIE). Inspired by their work, he founded Ferodo Bridges, gathering like-minded artists with whom to make shows, cabarets and exhibitions.

have been behaving far better that we had hoped,” he laughs. “Our aim is not to taunt or intimidate anyone but rather to help them immerse themselves in the story in a deeper and more playful way.”

“The charity 3Space helped a lot in those first steps as they gave us free spaces in courtrooms, offices and warehouses around London to try things out,” Alexander recalls. He later took time out to study for an MA in directing at LAMDA, through which he met artists from Theatre Rites and ATC who went on to offer him work and help solidify his mission with Ferodo Bridges.

While on the surface, The White Plague is a dystopian fantasy, Alexander insists the play has a heart. “It’s a story about community and division; a story of the choice between taking care of yourself and the people who look and sound like you, or having empathy, understanding and solidarity with other human beings,” he says. “I hope it provokes the audience to question the way they see the world and the way they judge or presume things about people around them. I also hope it inspires them to want to look after each other because society and community are only really tangible entities if we believe in them.”

As for the company name, it’s nothing to do with a similar sounding Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings. “We’re named after these straight old sturdy metal bridges scattered all over London,” the director reveals. “Most of them used to have the name ‘Ferodo’ on them in big letters, but they’ve now been painted over,” he says. “It felt right when we thought of it and reminded us of all the commuting and travelling we have to do to get together and make something.”

Creating an immersive production that must be experienced without sight is no small feat to pull off and understandably, requires more safety measures than your typical show. “The environment is quite controlled and from staging this twice before, we know what to expect,” reassures Alexander. “On arrival, we tell people they can leave anytime they want if they feel uncomfortable for any reason. A magical weekend of culture for kids at Blackheath Halls

“They are masters of updating and re-inventing classic fairy stories. Here, not only do we meet Rumpelstiltskin, but he’s joined by a Snail,” she grins.

“Hopefully the children will take away a new love of fairy tales and leave with smiles on their faces!”

Lucy has a wealth of experience as a workshop leader, presenter and singer, and has taught in a variety of settings including schools, hospitals and care homes. She regularly presents concerts for prominent arts organisations including the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra, and recently narrated the UK concert premiere of Dr Zhivago at Cadogan Hall.

Then the following afternoon, presenter and workshop leader Lucy Drever is taking little audience members aged 6+ on a journey through the musical landscape of the Arabian Nights. The family concert, dubbed ‘From Blackheath to Baghdad’ is being performed by the Trinity Laban Symphony Orchestra and also features a plunge into the spirited world of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral

Meanwhile, award-winning conductor Davide Levi is the man behind the baton. Davide has worked with some of the finest orchestras and opera companies in Europe – including Oper Leipzig and Garsington Opera – and is the 2019/20 Sir Charles Mackerras Junior Fellow in Conducting at Trinity Laban.

After the concert, there will be a chance to meet the musicians and get up close to the instruments – even trying some of them out.

ages and a chance to get up close to the instruments themselves after the performance,” says Nicola. “We’ve worked with Lucy before and she has lots of experience in leading music workshops with children and young people all over London. Her upbeat, enthusiastic personality – as well as knowledge of what’s happening within the music and orchestra – mean that children remain engaged throughout and really enjoy what they’re hearing.”

For Nicola and the rest of the team at Blackheath Halls, curating an events programme that caters for the whole community – young and old – is paramount. “Young children are the future of the arts and being part of encouraging that creative side is something we are very passionate about,” she says.

Into the Greenwich Foot Tunnel Mary Mills Continuing our trek along the riverside we come to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel which, under its glass dome, is one of the most prominent features at Cutty Sark Gardens and riverside.

Apparently some tourists think it is the Royal Observatory or a public convenience. Happily there is now an information board to tell us not only what it is but also how unusual.

Crossing the Thames at Greenwich has become a hot topic in recent years – we all know about the proposed Silvertown Tunnel – with talk of tolls. Up to the mid-19th century most upriver bridges were tolled; and east of the Tower there were only ferries. There was a great deal of discussion about this in Parliament and elsewhere. Eventually the tolls on the bridges were bought out by the City of London and it was decided to build a number of crossings east of the Tower - and, most importantly, they would be free.

Quite soon after Tower Bridge opened in 1894. Other crossings, without access to the City’s Bridge House money pots, had to wait. Another complication was the setting up of the new London County Council to replace the Metropolitan Board of Works. They opened the Woolwich Free Ferry and built the Blackwall Tunnel – more about them later, when I get to them. They also built the Rotherhithe Tunnel, outside of our area.

Will Crooks, later MP for Woolwich, had been Chair of the LCC Bridges Committee and through him two foot tunnels– Greenwich and Woolwich - were planned. As far as we are aware there are only three or four other sub-river pedestrian tunnels – all in Britain except one in Holland. Today the tunnels are classed as public highways and are thus permanently open day and night.

The Greenwich tunnel was the earlier of the two. It was designed by Sir Alexander Binnie, the contractors were J. Cochrane and Sons and work began in 1899. It opened in 1902. Construction began with the sinking of a shaft on the north bank of the River in Island Gardens and advanced under the River to emerge in Greenwich by what was then the Ship Inn. The tunnel is made up of a series of 32mm iron plates which are bolted together, lined with concrete and then faced with 200,000 white glazed ceramic tiles. The tunnel dips towards the centre of the river partly to allow for dredging the river above. Care was taken with the health of

workers employed with Medical Officers monitoring their health and progress.

The tunnel is accessed by shafts with a lift, fitted in 1904, and a spiral staircase. There is a brick entrance rotunda below a glass dome. Over the doorway at the Greenwich end is a bronze plaque which commemorates the completion of the work. During the Second World War the Greenwich tunnel was bombed and a narrowed section near the north end remains lined with metal plates and an explanatory plaque has been put up recently. There is also shrapnel damage left unrepaired in the brickwork of the south rotunda.

Hundreds of people daily use the tunnels to cross the River. A survey of 2007 found daily use at Greenwich to be about 2000 on weekdays, and 3000 at weekends and 2000 for weekdays. Pedestrians have been joined by many cyclists and for them these two tunnels are the major crossing points down River of Tower Bridge with the only choice being the Free Ferry, and, to a very limited extent, the Rotherhithe tunnel. Cyclists made up about 30% at Greenwich and these figures are rising. At Greenwich in the morning rush there is double the number of cyclists than pedestrians northbound –and the speeds undertaken by some riders have proved a safety concern.

In 2008 it was decided that the tunnels should be refurbished and work began.

There were a number of problems and a report into them also commented that while work on the tunnel was a small job for the construction industry it was nevertheless unique and complex in a way that had not really been appreciated by contractors.

Eventually in 2013 a group of local people and activists from Greenwich Cyclists decided to set up FOGWOFT– Friends of Greenwich and Woolwich Foot Tunnels. They were however keen to work with Greenwich Council and to help overcome difficulties and once works were finished that there should be an effort to get more public awareness of the tunnels and their heritage.

The clear wired glass on the Greenwich tunnels’ domes had the dirt of decades on them and people assumed the murky look was traditional. English Heritage agreed that the new laminated glass would

have a feint white smoke tint to reproduce that unwashed look! There was also the question as whether the tunnel should be newly tiled or if the old, sometimes damaged, tiles should remain. There was a clear majority of opinion that the traditional tiles should remain although they are never going to return to their original bright white state. All sub-river tunnels leak and stains due to this can be seen on the white tiles. The leaking water is drained to a sump along the whole tunnel and is pumped out at each end.

The original lifts had been replaced in 1992 and the original mahogany interiors reinstalled. They had always been attended at both ends. New state-of-the-art lifts are now in place, complete with the mahogany interiors.

But it turned out that the sun on the listed glass domes caused temperatures to rise and the electronic lift controls to cut out. Permanent cool boxes and air conditioning had to be been installed which has greatly improved lift performance.

As the tunnels have returned to normal use there are still challenges to be met. The by-laws rule that there shall be no cycling in the tunnel. This restriction does not appear to have been in place at first but dates from during the Great War along with a veto on the dropping of orange peel. Orange peel no longer seems to be a problem, but the ban on cycling is ignored by many cyclists. Tower Hamlets local papers ran stories of aggressive cyclists from south

London frightening walkers. The bylaws were rewritten and sent out to Newham and Tower Hamlets Councils for consultation.

So far they have still not been finalised.

The tunnels are used by people from all sections of the community and safety must be paramount. There have recently been complaints from pedestrians about skaters – sometimes in groups – rivalling some cyclists in speed and arrogance. While work was ongoing the tunnel was shut on some nights in order to remove hazardous waste and it was then discovered it was used by a group of runners who found themselves marooned on the Isle of Dogs having left their property in Greenwich. There is now a worry about the increased use of scooters.

Both tunnels continue to do the job they were built for a century ago, and do it efficiently and for free. Modernising them however, while maintaining their traditional features, has been more problematic than anyone thought – and provided some valuable lessons. This makes an important point about the tunnels – they seem so simple – and yet they were major engineering works of their day, and should be appreciated as such. ‘they represent a magnificent feat of Edwardian engineering – impressive ambition of the project - the character is consistent and defined by the finest engineering techniques of the day - the design throughout ... and fabric is coherent, logical and simple and the materials

used are robust and designed to last’.

The ideology of the 1890s and the great legacy of the London County Council have left us these two tunnels, still performing their original functions and still free for everyone, as they were intended to be.

We must learn to be proud of them.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) was recognised at the Houses of Parliament on Monday 2 March, after winning a pair of English Football League (EFL) awards.

CACT was named London Community Club of the Year, and also scooped the Divisional Project of the Year award for its Crime Reduction programme.

CACT impressed the judges with its continued ability to increase engagement, working with more than 46,000 people in the last year.

The Street Violence Ruins Lives (SVRL) strategy was relaunched in January 2019, with the aim of reducing levels of violence in the community through one-to-one mentoring, group work and enrichment

activities following funding from key partners including the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

The project has already had an impact on more than 2,000 young people.

More than 670 have been supported by being introduced to sport, and 351 have been involved in one-to-one mentoring with CACT mentors.

CACT’s Chief Executive Jason Morgan, Director of Youth & Inclusion Charlie Macdonald, Head of Early Help & Prevention Carl Krauhaus and Crime Reduction Mentor Jay Adam all came to Parliament to collect the awards.
