Scratchworks Theatre Company rewrite women into the history of Ancient Rome All-female ensemble Scratchworks Theatre Company are presenting their latest show, WOMANS (Like Romans, but with a W), at Greenwich Theatre next week. Through their existing work – including Nel, a charming and heartstring-tugging tale about a foley artist – the trio have built a reputation for creating shows that tell compelling stories peppered with live music, puppetry, clowning and more.

But WOMANS is Scratchworks’ first jaunt back into ancient history, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Set in Ancient Rome, in the time of Julius Caesar, the story follows a fictional character Leta, who has been declared a traitor by the Roman Senate.

Her punishment? ‘Damnatio Memoriae’ – to be entirely erased from history. But Leta is having none of it and instead, decides to rebel against the Republic and get herself rewritten into history.

“We’re an all-female theatre company but we love exploring male-dominated genres and stories traditionally told by men,” says Alice Higginson-Clarke, who is co-artistic director of the company along with Siân Keen and Laura Doble.

“With WOMANS, we wanted to uncover the forgotten women of Ancient Rome.

If you look back through the annals of comedy, you’ll find Monty Python’s Life of Brian, Frankie Howerd’s Up Pompeii! and ITV’s Plebs, but there’s very little which tells the female stories of Ancient Rome,” she points out.

But, with women having received a collective quasi ‘Damnatio Memoriae’, purely on the basis of their sex, the company’s research into Rome’s women didn’t lead them very far. “We found clothes-making and house-keeping

mostly,” Alice recalls. “At the other end of the scale, we found the most famous and powerful female player in Ancient Rome, Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. But there was nothing much in the middle.”

Then, they came across the Vestal Virgins – a holy order of six women, selected during childhood for a prestigious life guarding the sacred fire of Ancient Rome. “At this point in our research we all got very excited,” Alice says. “What if one of the Vestals got distracted one day and the sacred fire went out?”

While no such story of scandal among the Vestal Virgin could be found, the idea was spark enough for the company to build their story. “In our shows, we like to take these nuggets of facts and build our own original story around them,” says Alice. “You have to have some artistic license to play with the facts and make it a really exciting story for the audience.

And just because there’s nothing about these women in the history books doesn’t mean it didn’t happen!”

nationwide tour that sees them perform across the southern counties, and in the West Midlands and Lincolnshire.

Alice believes the tour is particularly timely, falling in Women’s History Month and in light of Sandi Toksvig’s recent campaign to tackle sexism on Wikipedia. “She pledged to ‘rewrite history’, so more women and their stories appear on the site,” she explains.

“At the heart of the show is the forgotten women of history. We want people to think about history as the stories we tell each other and it’s everyone’s responsibility to be part of that.”

That’s the premise sorted, but how does the whole show come together?

“WOMANS is a fast-paced family comedy packed with a myriad of silly characters, physical comedy and catchy tunes,” beams Alice.

“Expect chariot races, gladiator battles and some very dodgy Latin!”

A lecture series celebrating the women who shaped maritime history It’s a well-known fact that women have often been excluded from historical narratives or given lesser roles within them. In reality, women were hugely influential to the shaping of Greenwich, from Mary Lacy, the shipwright who built much of Deptford High Street, to the female ‘computers’ at the Royal Observatory. Here to put history straight is a lecture series at the National Maritime Museum: Women Making Waves Past and Present, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The programme consists of four family-friendly talks running on Friday lunchtimes throughout March.

Each iteration takes on a different overarching theme: encounters in the polar regions, women at sea, queer women in local maritime history, and black women making waves. Together, the talks have been curated to redress the gender balance by showcasing the considerable contributions women made to maritime history.

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us about the Women Making Waves lecture series.

What can audience members expect?

Charlotte Paddock: We’ve programmed the series to explore both historic and contemporary themes for women related to the sea, so that each event appeals and is relevant to a range of local communities. A collection of interventions have also been programmed alongside the talks to showcase creative responses to women at sea. The whole series has taken an intersectional approach to women’s history to ensure that race, class and sexuality are considered.

HOM: What was the inspiration behind the lecture series?

CP: Women Making Waves is an initiative that has been running at the National Maritime Museum (NMM) for three years now. It was first run in collaboration with the development of four new galleries, which aimed to increase the representation of gender, sexuality, migration, race and disability that had been underrepresented in the museum in the past. The series of lectures and interventions have been influenced by themes within the NMM’s collection.

The talks aim to tell the stories of women who have not been fully represented in the past, as well as showcasing the current achievements of women connected to the sea today.

HOM: Why were the stories of women’s contributions to maritime history so overlooked in the past?

CP: When the NMM first opened in 1937, the approaches to collection and curation were closely aligned to opinions on gender, sexuality, class, race and disability that were

prevalent at the time. Although women’s contributions to society, knowledge and discovery are of course equal to those of men, they’re traditionally underrepresented across every area of history, including maritime. Instead, women’s voices are heard through traditional roles such as the mother, wife or object of desire. Their stories are mostly in relation to men’s achievements, told by men or in a negative context. Much of this reflects women’s rights and positions in history, but there are missing stories of women’s contributions to society as leaders and pioneers.

We’ve been working with local organisations to deliver either talks or creative interventions for the events in the hope this will create connections within our local communities and reach different audiences. We’re currently working with a local youth group who access services related to emotional wellbeing and mental health, who are developing a poster for the museum. Students from SOAS university are also working with us to deliver a creative intervention for visitors that explores women at sea.

HOM: Following on from that, why is now the time to put the work and achievements of these women back in the spotlight?

CP: The increased representation of women in history is something the NMM has been working on for several years and we developed Women Making Waves as an annual event for Women’s History Month [ March 1-31]. Doing so is integral to bringing a heightened focus to the achievements of women today, as gender inequality – and it’s relation to race, sex and class – is still an issue in today’s society.

HOM: Finally, would you say there’s a highlight event in the series?

Or anyone you’re particularly interested to hear talk?

CP: All of the speakers will be bringing a unique focus to the series so we’re very excited to be hearing from everyone, especially all of the women that haven’t worked with us before. Bird la Bird’s performative talk will be a real highlight. They’re presenting a queer perspective on local Greenwich history, which follows on from their Fierce Queen’s: House of Queers takeover of the Queen’s House back in February to celebrate LGBT+ History Month.

HOM: What do you hope this lecture series brings the local community and how do you hope they respond to it?

CP: Having four separate events has allowed us to showcase four different themes, each of which relate to women in the NMM collection and are also

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) were recently represented at the Football v Homophobia Awards earlier this month, with LGBTQI+ friendly team scooping the Grassroots Football Award.

Lou Englefield, Football v Homophobia’s Campaign Director, said: “CACT Invicta winning the Football v Homophobia Award is testament to the inclusive work that this Club is doing.”

SCHEDULE 2 FORM OF STATEMENT OF EFFECT OF PARTS II AND III OF THE COMPULSORY PURCHASE (VESTING DECLARATIONS) ACT 1981 Power to execute a general vesting declaration 1 Once The Royal Borough of Greenwich (Morris Walk Estate and Maryon Road and Grove Estate, Woolwich) Compulsory Purchase Order 2019 has become operative, the Royal Borough of Greenwich (“the Council”) may acquire any of the land described in Schedule 1 above by executing a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981 (“the Act”). This has the effect, subject to paragraphs 3 and 5 below, of vesting the land in the Council at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2 As soon as may be after the Council execute a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 4) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in the confirmation notice of the Order. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a period specified in the declaration, of not less than three months,

will begin to run. On the first day after the end of this period the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraphs 3 and 5,vest in the Council together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. Every person on whom the Council could have served a notice to treat in respect of their interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 4) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of their interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

3 The “vesting date” for any land specified in a declaration will be the first day after the periodmentioned in paragraph 2 above, unless a counter-notice is served under Schedule A1 to the Act within that period. In such circumstances, the vesting date for the land which is the subject of the counter-notice will be determined in accordance with Schedule A1.

Modifications with respect to certain tenancies 4 In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, i.e. a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The latter expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

5 The modifications are that the Council may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 4 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than three months from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.
