‘A battle cry for kindness in the 21st-century’ Andy Craven-Griffiths presents Joygernaut: a one-man show and ‘modern fable’ all about kindness. The product of 18 months’ research into the psychology, sociology and biology of kindness, Joygernaut is a spoken word play that uses a mixture of personal stories, physical theatre, comedy and even origami to explore how acts of kindness – and cruelty – gain momentum over time.

This month’s edition of Off The Kerb at Blackheath Halls sees a trio of talents from the comedy circuit take to the stage of the Hearn Recital Room.

Grab the prune wine! Revel in queer royal history at the Queen’s House Take part in an evening of gender-diverse performances and immersive experiences at the Queen’s House. Macbeth gets a contemporary makeover for new Greenwich Theatre production

With its prophesying witches, brutal regicide and underlying warning of the dangers of being too power hungry, Macbeth is one of the Bard’s most famous and frequently adapted plays – and still our appetite rumbles on for new takes on the story. This is in fact the second time Lazarus has produced a version of the play, having staged a Macbeth at The Blue Elephant Theatre in Camberwell back in 2011.

“Our new Macbeth has been designed for the Greenwich Theatre stage and is set in present day. Not with iPhones, but it’s fresh and contemporary,” reveals Ricky Dukes, artistic director of Lazarus. “It’s fast-paced, energetic, scary and very, very bloody,” he grins.

“We remain faithful to Shakespeare's text and intentions but we have created a physical and theatrical contemporary experience.”

Ricky originally trained as an actor, but after becoming frustrated with the types of work and roles he was being offered, took the advice of a friend and established his own theatre company.

“Initially, I didn't want to set up my own company. I saw this as something you did when you couldn't get work,” he recalls. At the same time, he knew he had the outlook of a director. “As an actor, I always had a kind of third eye, aware of how [what was happening on stage] looked to the audience.”

Leapfrogging smaller, lesser known works, the company’s first production, back in 2007, was a take on Euripides’ Medea. “I love Greek tragedy,” Ricky reflects. “The boldness, the raw emotion and the huge scale of the work; it’s so exciting.”

Ricky may not have foreseen a career for himself as a director specialising in the classics, but a friend of his from university certainly did. “I was nicknamed ‘Lazarus’ after the biblical story of Lazarus rising from the dead,” he says. “My friend claimed that’s what I did with the classics [when we produced them on our university course]: gave them a new lease of life.” Ricky didn’t know the reason behind the old nickname until years later, when he rang the friend to ask.

At the time, he was looking for a company name to stage his Medea under, and on hearing the story behind his former nickname, he knew the company had to be called Lazarus.

Ricky is as passionate about the works of the Bard as he is the Greek tragedies, and has staged over a dozen with Lararus alone. “From a personal point of view the classics are just so meaty, raw, emotive and big… They ask so many questions about us, humanity and the world we live in,” he says.

“They [continue to] feel immediate, urgent, compelling and ‘now’.”

Over the next six months, Lazarus will bring two further productions to Greenwich Theatre: a take on Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler (25 March – 4 April) and JM Barrie’s magical children’s classic Peter Pan (24 June – 11 July).

With each of their shows, the company hopes to create work that speaks to, and excites, the local audience.

“We want to produce work made for the Greenwich stage and our community,” affirms Ricky, adding that each of their seasons has been conceptualised under the invisible banner of ‘Greenwich Made, Greenwich Played. “We’ve been struck by the support we’ve had from local audience members, organisations and businesses,” he says.

“Macbeth is a fantastic play for those for whom Shakespeare seems out of reach as well as those wellversed in the Bard’s work,” he adds, pointing out that as a play, it works for all ages. “It excites, scares, seduces, entices, enthralls, bites and blasts you as an audience.”

For Ricky, one of the most important things is creating live art the community can experience together.

“It’s really important to us that people come and experience live theatre together, across the generations and social divides. These great plays really do belong to us all, and we want to share them with all.”

Lazarus Theatre Company kick off their third and final year as associate artists at Greenwich Theatre with a contemporary production of Shakespeare’s gory tragedy, Macbeth. Following an intense, three-week rehearsal process which has seen the company pull together an entirely new adaptation, they say it’s taken “guts, stamina and rigor” to create a fresh take on the epic tale, but they’re how excited to share the final product with the local audience, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Look and learn: Queen’s House unveils Woburn Treasures lecture series The Queen’s House has unveiled a lecture series to complement its current Woburn Treasures exhibition. The talks will be held weekly on Thursday mornings between February 27 and April 2, and are a chance to hear leading scholars and curators divulge what they know about the treasures: a significant collection of artworks from Woburn Abbey, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The Woburn Treasures features works by Van Dyck, Reynolds, Gainsborough and Canaletto, while the exhibition itself marks the first time in over 60 years that pieces from Woburn's private collection have been on public display in a national museum. Pieces of particular interest on show in the exhibition include a portrait of Elizabeth I’s ladies-in-waiting; a double portrait of Elizabeth I’s half-sister Mary and her husband Philip II of Spain (who subsequently attempted to invade England in the Spanish Armada of 1588); and a portrait of Anne of Denmark, who commissioned the Queen’s House.

Kicking off the lecture series is a talk by Victoria Poulton, assistant curator at Woburn Abbey. Others speaking on the artworks include David Taylor, curator of pictures and sculpture for The National Trust (March 12), and art historian Charlotte Bolland, a senior curator for the National Portrait Gallery (March 26). The series concludes with a talk by Woburn Abbey’s curator Matthre Hirst on April 2.

Doctor Allison Goudie, curator of art for Royal Museums Greenwich, said the lecture series would be “a wonderful accompaniment” to the Woburn Treasures exhibition. “We are extremely excited to be able to host a brilliant line-up of esteemed art historians and curators as part of the Woburn Treasures lecture series,” she said. “It will bring to life the fascinating stories behind some of these special loans.”

The Woburn Treasures are currently on show alongside a second exhibition, Faces of a Queen, which sees the three surviving versions of the Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I go on show together for the first time in their 430-year history.

The portraits commemorate the most famous conflict in Elizabeth I’s reign: the failed attempt by the Spanish Armada to invade England in 1588.

As for the format of the lectures, each talk will begin with an introduction to the Woburn Treasures exhibition, followed by a deep-dive into the stories of some of the key figures who shaped the collection of artworks.

The accompanying lecture series offers visitors the chance to delve into the history of Woburn Abbey and learn about its world-famous art collection.

“The Woburn Treasures will be a real treat for art lovers and history buffs alike,” enthuses Allison.

“The collection at Woburn Abbey is among the most important in private hands, and we’re absolutely thrilled to be able to display highlights from the collection at the Queen’s House,” she says.

Agrippina: From the Met Opera of New York to Greenwich Picturehouse The Metropolitan Opera of New York is staging its first ever production of Handel’s darkly funny opera Agrippina about power and lust in ancient Rome.

The same production was staged at the Royal Opera House in London last autumn, where it was received with critical acclaim.

But if you missed it there, you won’t have to travel to the Big Apple to see it: a screening of Agrippina on the stage of the Met is showing at Greenwich Picturehouse on February 29, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The story follows the titular Agrippina, who, on believing her emperor husband Claudio to have drowned, loses no time in installing her mollycoddled son

Nerone as his successor. However, Claudio has in fact been saved from the waves by the noble Ottone, to whom he promises the same crown in thanks. Ottone soon reveals that his love for the courtesan Poppea is greater than his desire for power.

But Nerone, too, desires Poppea, and so a bedroom farce ensues, with the two women – Agrippina and Poppea – very much in charge.

Matters don’t end there, however; Agrippina’s bitter scheming and ruthless desires to see Nerone win the crown continues with insatiable force.

Handel wrote Agrippina towards the end of a prolonged stay in Italy. The opera had its premiere in Venice in 1709, and was his first notable operatic achievement. It proved an immediate success, with 27 consecutive performances following. However, despite the public enthusiasm for the

work, Handel did not promote further stagings. There were occasional productions in the years following its premiere but Handel's operas, including Agrippina, fell out of fashion in the mid-18th century.

It wasn’t until the 20th century that Agrippina was revived in Germany and premiered in Britain and America. Today, Agrippina is widely regarded as Handel's first operatic masterpiece, full of freshness and musical invention, which has made it one of the most popular operas of the ongoing Handel revival.

The Met’s current production stars mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato as the scheming Empress Agrippina; countertenor Iestyn Davies as the noble and ambitious commander Ottone; and Brenda Rae as the seductive but steely future empress, Poppea.

Barrie Kosky's production is nothing if not gorgeous. Designer Rebecca Ringst enlists the help of rising and falling Venetian blinds to reveal rooms, corridors and vertiginous stairs, in what Claudia describes as “a labyrinthine metaphor for the devious shenanigans in play”.

Klaus Bruns’s parade of gowns, meanwhile, “are worthy of any world-leading fashion week”.

Since Picturehouse launched its Screen Arts programme in 2011, the

screenings have been enormously popular and praised for making some of the UK’s most prestigious theatre, dance and opera accessible to audiences beyond the locations where the productions are being staged.

What’s more, tickets are usually far cheaper to see these productions in the cinema than at the live venue and thanks to the close up camera angles, you often have a better view, too. Advance booking is usually made available to Picturehouse members first, and screenings vary in popularity, but it’s worth booking in advance when you can to avoid disappointment.

With this in mind, here are some of the different types of funerals on offer.

Burial services

1) Arranging a funeral?

Know your options Gone are the days when a funeral service followed by a burial was the norm when saying goodbye to a loved one. According to Dignity Funerals, one of the largest providers of prepaid funeral services in the UK, 77% of all UK funerals are in fact cremations.

What’s more, alternative options such as eco-funerals, woodland burials and humanist ceremonies are on the rise.

If you’re in charge of arranging a funeral for a loved one, the first thing to take into account is the wishes of the deceased. Were they religious?

Did they leave specific instructions or requests for their funeral?

“With 20 years’ experience, nothing can shock you however unusual a request maybe, and it’s your job to do your utmost to deliver what the family wants,” says Matthew Uden, a funeral director with Elthambased company W. Uden & Sons.

“Whether its horses in the snow or a motorbike hearse in a field, we go the extra mile to fulfil these wishes,” he says. “Once I surprised a family with a milk float leading the procession. When arranging, they mentioned that [the deceased] was a milkman all his life and loved anything to do with his trade.”

In the UK, a funeral held in a church, followed by a graveyard burial, is still the most traditional type of service.

It’s up to you, the organiser, who attends the actual, in which the coffin is lowered into the ground and further readings and prayers are read.

Burials are usually more expensive than their alternatives, what with a headstone, the burial plot, the opening and closing the plot, and the coffin or casket all needing to be bought. Research from life insurance company SunLife found the average burial cost £4,975 in 2019, compared to £3,858 for cremations.

Cremation Cremation ceremonies, whereby the body is disposed of through burning instead of burial, take place after the funeral service in a crematorium and usually last 45 minutes. Typically, the coffin remains on the catafalque whilst the service takes place, and is then lowered or hidden by curtains for the committal. It’s then up to you as the organise to decide whether the ashes are scattered or buried in the crematorium garden.

Direct cremation Favoured as a low-cost, fuss-free alternative to traditional funeral practices, direct cremations place all aspects of organising the farewell ceremony or memorial event in the hands of the family or friends of the deceased. Neither a minister or funeral director’s services are required, nor will there be a formal procession, limousines or pallbearers to carry the coffin. Instead, it’s down to you to organise a doctor to complete the necessary paperwork, collect your loved one’s body from the hospital or morgue, sort transport to and from the crematorium, and make arrangements for the safe return of the ashes following the ceremony. According to SunLife, the average cost of a direct cremation in the UK in 2019 was £1,626.

Woodland burials & eco-funerals Our growing concerns for the welfare of the planet, coupled with our becoming more secular as a nation, has seen a rise in the number of woodland burials and eco-funerals in the UK. These ‘green’ alternatives typically take place in a designated woodland burial site and see graves marked with plants or trees instead of gravestones. Coffins, too, are made with biodegradable materials, such as cardboard, bamboo or willow, and you might choose to wrap your loved one’s body in an eco-friendly burial shroud.

If possible, you may wish to make travel arrangements to the site that also help reduce your carbon footprint too, such as walking or cycling, rather than driving a vehicle. If you’ve chosen to cremate the body, you might choose to bury the ashes in a

biodegradable urn. Or perhaps you’ll opt for a tree pod burial, whereby the body is placed in the ground in the foetal position to represent rebirth, with a tree planted above them.

The cost of eco-funerals and woodland burials varies significantly depending on the site and can cost anywhere between a few hundred pounds to several thousand.

Humanist funerals Humanist funerals are non-religious services that can be tailor-made to say goodbye to your loved one in whatever way feels right.

“The celebrant will help the family or friends responsible for organising the funeral to put together things like tributes and music, to create the best possible farewell,” says Hester.

Humanist funeral ceremonies centre around a tribute section, which typically lasts up to 15 minutes, and can be held at a cemetary, a woodland burial site or crematorium, depending on your preferences.

While often conducted by celebrants like Hester, humanist funeral services can also be led by a family member or close friend of the deceased. “People who have not been to a humanist funeral before often say how much they liked it because it was about the person who died, it focused on what was special about them and allowed family and friends to speak, to choose favourite music, to dress the coffin if they like, and to express their feelings in their own way,” says Hester.

“Ultimately, the goal with humanist funerals is to respect the views of the person who has died.”

2) How to plan a funeral Planning a funeral is often an emotional process. Regardless of whether or not the deceased passed away suddenly, preparations need to be made while you, their loved ones, are still in the early stages of grieving your loss. Here is a breakdown of the types of considerations that need to be taken into account.

First things first: the will You will need to locate the will of the deceased, if they made one, and take into account any wishes they expressed for their funeral.

For example, is there a particular hymn they want sung? Did they want to be buried or cremated?

Preparations on the day By the day itself, you will already have decided on a dress code for the funeral. You’ll want to pack tissues, an umbrella (if there’s a chance of rain), and think about whether you want to take a guestbook for people to write down their thoughts and memories. The funeral procession typically begins at the home of the deceased, however you can make alternative arrangements if you wish.

Following the funeral

Costing up a funeral Next, it’s a case of looking into costs for the funeral. If this is your first time organising one, it might come as a surprise to learn that the average cost of a funeral in the UK is over £4,400 (with burials costing slightly more than cremations) according to Guardian article published in January 2020.

You will need to look into whether the deceased had a life insurance plan and if so, whether it covered funeral expenses. If not, and you think you might struggle with the costs, you might want to look into the Government’s Funeral Expenses Payment: a scheme established to help those on low income cover the essential expenses associated with a funeral. On average, the government pays out £1,400 to those who apply, covering burial or cremation fees, travel costs for transporting the body and up to £700 of funeral expenses.

It’s worth noting, though, that your

If you’re the next of kin, a sudden passing also carries a wealth of responsibilities – all of which need taking care of while you’re in the early stages of grieving.

“Any and every death is always an incredibly sad occasion, but when someone’s passing is sudden or tragic, it is so much harder for the families involved,” says Matthew Uden, a funeral director with Elthambased company W. Uden & Sons.

Choosing a funeral director The next task is choosing a funeral director to organise and oversee the funeral. It’ll be their job to coordinate with whoever is conducting the service and ensure everything runs smoothly on the day. “Firstly, it’s important that you find a funeral director you feel happy with and confident they will care for your loved one,” points out Matthew Uden, who has been a funeral director with Eltham-based family-run business W. Uden & Sons for 20 years.

First things first: who to tell As with any death, once you’ve alerted a doctor and the body is in the care of professionals for the time being, you’ll want to inform those closest to your loved one of their passing. If you’re still in shock, you might find it easier to have a trusted friend or relative make these calls. “Talk to any other relatives, friends, colleagues or neighbours who you know were important [to the deceased] and would like to be involved,” advises Hester Brown, a Lewisham-based celebrant with Southeast London Humanist Celebrants’ Group. “You can share some of the emotional strain and the tasks with them.”

Dignity Funerals, one of the largest providers of funerals in the UK, points out that if there is any uncertainty over the cause of death, or the death was sudden or unnatural (such as a road accident or unexplained death when the person was presumed fit and healthy), the doctor will need to contact a coroner, who may request a post mortem examination or inquest.

A death cannot be officially registered until the coroner’s investigation is complete, nor can a funeral take place before the cause of death has been established.

Making decisions for the ceremony itself Once you’ve chosen a funeral director, you will need to decide on several important things: the coffin, type of burial, music for the service, a dress code for the funeral, transport to and from the venue (for the body of the deceased as well as friends and family members),

interim death certificate to allow you to notify relevant organisations, such as your chosen funeral directors, and apply for probate.

Register the death Once the cause of death has been established, you’ll need to register the death of your loved one.

According to Dignity Funerals, you’ll need several documents to do this, including the deceased’s passport, proof of address, marriage certificate (if applicable), birth certificate and medical certificate of cause of death.

You’ll also need to bring a valid form of identification for yourself, too.

Inform any relevant organisations While it might be the last thing you feel like doing when you’re grieving, it’s important you inform any organisations closely associated with your loved one of their death.

This includes their employer, utility providers, banks, HMRC, mortgage provider, gym and these days, even social media organisations. The last thing you want is to receive a call, email or letter through the post from any of the above, assuming your loved one is still alive and well.

The content included in the ceremony is entirely up to you, the organisers. Music, hymns, poems and readings are all things to think about, as well as whether you would like religious readings.

In addition to the ceremony, you will need to make plans for the committal service (the rituals held at the graveside or in the cremation chapel), and whether you will be holding a wake before the funeral and/or a reception afterwards, both of which are a less formal chance to celebrate the life of the deceased. Matthew believes it is essential to check in with your mental wellbeing when you’re grieving. “In a climate where mental health is so apparent, I cannot stress enough that however hard things are, it’s important to talk and communicate your feelings,” he says.

If you’re feeling low or struggling to cope in the days or weeks after the funeral, it might be worth looking into options for counselling, or speaking to your GP for further options for support.

Both Matthew and Hester advise being open about your feelings with family and friends.

“Allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling, don’t judge yourself and remember that feelings can emerge quickly or slowly” says Hester, adding that seeking help from a professional, such as a counsellor, can also help you on the road to recovery.

“Those who are closest to the person who has died will need the comforting and support of their family and friends, and it’s so important that we all communicate, if only to reassure the bereaved that we are here when they need us,” says Matthew.

As a final, cautionary note, Hester points out that while talk of death and funerals is usually a taboo among people who are fit and healthy, having the chat can make decisions like funeral arrangements easier if someone suddenly passes. “It’s good to talk about these things with your loved ones now, not wait till they, or you, have died,” she says.

“Each one of us is important and special, and deserves a decent send-off.”

HELP!? I CAN’T FIND A WILL

acing the loss of a loved one is hard enough to deal with, without the added complication of realising that they have passed away without a Will.

Unfortunately, many people find themselves in this situation every day. The mistaken belief that “when I die everything will go to my children” or “my family will sort it all out” often leads to loved ones inevitably either missing out completely on a share of an estate, or not receiving as much as the deceased would have wanted.

Having a Will in place ensures that those who are left behind, have a set of instructions available to them setting out how an estate should be dealt with.

But, what happens when there is no Will and therefore no instructions setting out what must be done?

DYING INTESTATE

In the event that a loved one passes away without a Will, they are said to have died ‘intestate’.

If someone dies intestate, this means that everything they own (often referred to as their assets) will

be distributed according to the law in the UK, specifically the intestacy rules.

THE INTESTACY RULES

The intestacy rules determine how someone’s assets are to be distributed when there is no Will in place. This therefore means that there is a set order of priority of who will inherit.

ORDER OF PRIORITY

Married (no children) If there are no children (whether shared or from a previous relationship) then the surviving spouse will inherit everything. This may not be what you want.

Married (with children) The surviving spouse will inherit up to the value of £250,000. If the estate is worth more than £250,000, then the excess value will be divided into two and the surviving spouse will be entitled to one half and the surviving child/children will be entitled to the other half, shared equally between them.

“Children” means birth or adopted

children. This does not include stepchildren.

Contrary to popular belief, this is not the most tax efficient way to leave your estate and can lead to Inheritance Tax implications. It can also cause complications between your spouse and children.

If the estate is worth £250,000 or less, then the children will inherit nothing as the surviving spouse inherits all assets.

This poses problems for a spouse who passes away with children from a previous marriage/relationship with an estate below the £250,000 threshold. In such a scenario the new spouse would inherit everything, including any jointly held assets.

Unmarried Partner (with children) Regardless of how long the surviving partner has lived with the deceased, they will not be entitled to anything. Everything will be split equally between the surviving children.

This could leave your partner without any security on your death.

Unmarried Partner (no children) Once again, the surviving partner

will not be entitled to anything and the estate will be shared equally in the order of priority listed below: • Parents • Brother/Sister • Grandparents • Aunts and Uncles • Cousins Therefore if parents are still alive, they will inherit everything. This may not be tax efficient if your parents already have a large estate of their own.

If parents are not alive, then the next in order of priority, i.e. brothers and sisters, will inherit everything in equal shares. It may, in this scenario, be sensible to “skip generations” and leave the estate directly to nieces and nephews.

It is always recommended to be prepared and have a Will which is up to date and suits your current circumstances. Having a Will in place ensures that an estate will be distributed exactly how you would want it to be.

Short Breaks trip, highlighting examples of the different activities the group go on.

The parent of a young person who attends the Short Breaks sessions Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) runs for young people with disabilities and special educational needs has praised the impact of the programme.

Chloe, aged 15, has a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and will often use sign language to communicate.

Short Breaks, which CACT delivers in the Royal Borough of Greenwich and London Borough of Bexley, is a targeted programme for 13 to 17-year-olds.

The programme allows young people to experience new activities, while also giving parents respite care.

1. Notice is hereby given that the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government in exercise of his powers under the above Acts, on the 11th day of February 2020 confirmed with modifications The Royal Borough of Greenwich (Morris Walk Estate and Maryon Road and Grove Estate, Woolwich) Compulsory Purchase Order 2019 submitted by the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

2. The Order as confirmed provides for the purchase of the land described in Schedule 1 for the purpose of facilitating the carrying out of the development, redevelopment and improvement of the Morris Walk Estate and Maryon Road and Grove Estate to provide new residential units, associated access, parking and private and public open spaces.

3. A copy of the Order as confirmed by the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and of the maps referred to therein have been deposited at The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, Woolwich, London SE18 6HQ between the hours of 9am-4pm Monday to Friday.

4. The Order as confirmed becomes operative on the date on which this notice is first published. A person aggrieved by the Order may, by application to the High Court within 6 weeks from that date, challenge its validity under section 23 of the Acquisition of Land Act 1981. The grounds for challenge can be that the authorisation granted by the Order is not empowered to be granted or that there has been a failure to comply with any relevant statutory requirements relating to the Order.

SCHEDULE 2 FORM OF STATEMENT OF EFFECT OF PARTS II AND III OF THE COMPULSORY PURCHASE (VESTING DECLARATIONS) ACT 1981 Power to execute a general vesting declaration 1 Once The Royal Borough of Greenwich (Morris Walk Estate and Maryon Road and Grove Estate, Woolwich) Compulsory Purchase Order 2019 has become operative, the Royal Borough of Greenwich (“the Council”) may acquire any of the land described in Schedule 1 above by executing a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981 (“the Act”). This has the effect, subject to paragraphs 3 and 5 below, of vesting the land in the Council at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2 As soon as may be after the Council execute a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 4) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in the confirmation notice of the Order. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a period specified in the declaration, of not less than three months,

will begin to run. On the first day after the end of this period the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraphs 3 and 5,vest in the Council together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. Every person on whom the Council could have served a notice to treat in respect of their interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 4) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of their interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

3 The “vesting date” for any land specified in a declaration will be the first day after the periodmentioned in paragraph 2 above, unless a counter-notice is served under Schedule A1 to the Act within that period. In such circumstances, the vesting date for the land which is the subject of the counter-notice will be determined in accordance with Schedule A1.

Modifications with respect to certain tenancies 4 In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, i.e. a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The latter expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

5 The modifications are that the Council may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 4 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than three months from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

ROYAL BOROUGH OF GREENWICH TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING ACT 1990 – SECTION 247 PROPOSED STOPPING UP OF THE HIGHWAY - THAMES PATH, PENINSULA QUAY 1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich intends to make an Order under section 247 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, entitled the Royal Borough of Greenwich (Stopping Up of Highways) (No. *) (Thames Path, Peninsula Quay) Order 2020.

2. The general effect of the Order would be to authorise the stopping up of land referred to as the Thames Path used by pedestrians and cyclist and situated between Tunnel Avenue and the River Thames so as to accommodate the development known as Greenwich Peninsula Driving Range.

The term “stopping-up” means that this area of highway would cease to be public highway.[Note: A new path for pedestrians and cyclists linking the River Thames and Tunnel Avenue is provided as part of this development].

If the Order is made, the stopping-up would only be authorised in order to enable the provision of the development referred to in paragraph (2) above to be carried out in accordance with the planning permission granted to Knight Dragon Developments Ltd on 9th February 2015 (the planning application reference is 14/2161/F).
