Ditch romance and enjoy a treat from London’s underground music scene instead Since coming together as a group in 2016, Nihilism have made their mark on London’s underground music scene. Theatre You’ll find none of the soppiness and mush associated with the most romantic day of the year at Greenwich Theatre this Friday. Instead, you can take your seats for a ‘Valentine’s burning of an 18th-century rom-com’ in the form of Polly (The Heartbreak Opera).

Devised by Marie Hamilton and Sharp Teeth Theatre, the show is a gritty and contemporary adaptation of John Gay’s Polly, his banned sequel to The Beggar’s Opera, featuring techno, tracksuits and, er, palm trees, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Peppered with pop songs inspired by a broad range of artists – from Peaches to Britney – this ‘not-quite-musical’ whisks its audience to a tacky beach resort where jilted brides, pregnant murderers, politicians and pirates are swapping notes on love, loss and revenge. It all sounds pretty experimental, which is precisely the aim of all Sharp Teeth Theatre’s shows.

Since then, the company’s productions have included a drag history show about the failed revolution under Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and a modern version of Bluebeard. Looking ahead, there are ideas bubbling away for them to create a play about the moment Winston Churchill lost his job as prime minister to Labour’s Clement Attlee during the Second World War. But for now, all energy is being thrown into touring Polly.

“We want to lure the audience off the path and into the forest, but instead of being eaten by the wolves, we want them to join the wolves,” explains artistic director Stephanie Kempson, metaphorically.

“As a company we are interested in exploring topics which tell us something new about the world, breaking form gently but persuasively and provoking audiences in an entertaining way.”

Inspired by the works of author Angela Carter, filmmaker Chris Morris, theatremaker Emma Rice and director Sally Cookson, Stephanie created Sharp Teeth Theatre five years ago while she was running a night of music, theatre and

Far from being a loyal retelling of the original Polly, which premiered over 200 years ago, Sharp Teeth Theatre’s adaptation has its feet firmly planted in 2020. “We’ve taken aim at Boris Johnson, the British and the cool girl trope among other things,” reveals Stephanie. “These things are hilarious and ridiculous. We try to walk a really mad line between horror and hilarity,” she says.

To create the show, Stephanie and her core team – which includes actor and theatre-maker Marie Hamilton, and composer Ben Osborn – looked at the central themes explored in the original play, then wrote their own list of things they wanted to explore concerning women,

romance and power structures. “These ranged from women’s voices being called annoying, to women not being allowed to be interested in sex without being degraded, to how ‘bad boys’ get away with awful behaviour,” says Stephanie.

It was these core issues that informed the play’s songs. “We’re all massive music lovers, so it was incredibly exciting.

Expect some Peggy Lee, Berlin techno, Britney Spears and, most horrifying, UKIP reggae,” she says. Does Stephanie have a favourite song in the production?

“The song I’m proudest of is ‘I’m a Man’, which is inspired by Ricky Martin’s ‘Livin’ La Vida Loca’ and features some of the grossest lyrics I’ve ever written,” she giggles. “But probably my favourite song in the show is a sad number called ‘Love is a Terrible Thing’, which Madeline Shann wrote. It’s heartrendingly beautiful.”

At the time of writing, the company are only just embarking on their Polly tour, but they’ve already had a chance to gauge their audience’s response thanks to earlier work-in-progress performances in Bristol, Manchester and as part of last year’s Les Enfants Terribles (LET) Awards at Greenwich Theatre.

“They loved it,” beams Stephanie. “We had men and women telling us that they couldn’t wait to see the next version, even after we performed a bluesy song about colonialism and the patriarchy,” she laughs.

So, who will the show appeal to on Valentine’s Day, and who should maybe wait until the must less romantic February 15 to see it? “It will appeal to everyone who has ever noticed something funny about heterosexual relationships, or listened to a romantic song and thought ‘this is ridiculous’, or been heartbroken, or has even the tiniest amount of cynicism in their bodies,” insists Stephanie.

“This musical is pure fun, pure story and pure enjoyment. We want people to fall in love with intersectional feminism and empowerment, so that they never, ever, ever mutter the phrase ‘it’s political correctness gone mad’ ever again in their lives,” she concludes.

See history in the making at the Queen’s House Two exhibitions of historic significance are landing at the Queen’s House in Greenwich this Thursday, February 13.

Faces of a Queen sees the three surviving versions of the Armada Portrait of Elizabeth I go on show together for the first time in their 430-year history.

The collection at Woburn Abbey is among the most important in private hands, and we’re absolutely thrilled to be able to display highlights from the collection at the Queen’s House. Many pieces on show as part of the Woburn Treasures exhibition relate to the history of Greenwich as an important site of the Tudor and Stuart monarchy.

Holly O’Mahony: This is the first time in history that the three Armada Portraits are going on show together. What does it mean to Royal Museums Greenwich (RMG), and you as the curator, to be able to show these works to the public?

Dr Allison Goudie: We are absolutely delighted to be able to bring these three portraits together on public display for the first time ever. It will be so exciting to see all three together and we can’t wait to share this historic moment with our visitors at the Queen’s House. Elizabeth was in many ways a ‘Greenwich’ queen and many defining events of her reign took place at Greenwich: it was at the Tudor Palace at Greenwich that she was born, it was from Greenwich that she witnessed the return of Sir Francis Drake from his first circumnavigation of the globe, and it was ‘from Greenwich, in haste’ that she signed the death warrant for Mary, Queen of Scots – one of the factors that contributed to Philip II’s decision to launch the Spanish Armada, the defeat of which the Armada Portrait commemorates.

HOM: Which pieces will visitors to the Woburn Treasures exhibition get to see?

AG: Look out for a splendid portrait of one of Elizabeth I’s ladies-in-waiting; a fascinating double portrait of Elizabeth I’s half-sister Mary and her husband Philip II of Spain (who subsequently attempted to invade England in the Spanish Armada of 1588); and a magnificent portrait of Anne of Denmark, who commissioned the Queen’s House.

HOM: Tell us a bit about the three very similar looking portraits.

How do they differ?

HOM: Why are the portraits so important as historical artefacts as well as pieces of exquisite art?

AG: The three portraits are all slightly different and I think seeing them together reminds us of their history as objects and the lives they’ve lived. For example, the Woburn portrait is the only version with the original 16th-century seascapes intact; in the National Portrait Gallery’s version the seascapes have been truncated at some point in their history, while in the RMG version the seascapes you see today were painted in the early 18th-century, but we know from technical analysis that the original 16th-century seascapes are still underneath.

AG: The Armada Portraits are not only among the most iconic portraits of Elizabeth I, but they are among the most iconic images of British history. In a way, because this image of Elizabeth I is so familiar, it’s easy to take it for granted.

But the Armada Portraits are absolutely bursting with symbolism and you could spend hours immersed in their intricate detail. They’re mesmerising and will be all the more so when seen together.

AG: This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for people to see all three Armada Portraits together and through them, to encounter Elizabeth I like never before. It will be a real feast for the eyes, and I hope visitors will linger and take their time to immerse themselves in the magnificent detail of these paintings. More fundamentally, however, the experience of seeing the three side-by-side allows us to explore themes that are as relevant to us today as they were in the 16th-century, such as the relationship between women and power.

HOM: What do you hope visitors take away from seeing the paintings ‘in the flesh’?

HOM: How did you go about securing the loan of the paintings?

AG: We’re very grateful to the Duke and

Duchess of Bedford and to the National Portrait Gallery for generously agreeing to part with their Armada Portraits in order to unite them in this exhibition.

Needless to say, without their collaboration, this exhibition would not be possible.

It has been a pleasure to work with them towards this exciting moment.

HOM: A selection of artworks from Woburn Abbey are also coming to the Queen’s House at the same time as the Armada portraits. How do the Woburn Treasures complement the Armada portraits?

AG: The Woburn Treasures will be a real treat for art lovers and history buffs alike

HOM: Finally, how do you advise visitors split their time between the two exhibitions? Should they see both in one go or make two separate trips?

AG: Faces of a Queen and the Woburn Treasures are two separate exhibitions.

Both are free and you don’t need to book. So really, it’s up to you whether you see them both in one go or decide to come back as many times as you like!

Review:

You can’t beat too much Toomai

Toomai Square, the Pan-Asian restaurant that has turned heads and changed palates in Greenwich in the few months that it has been open, has now introduced more Indian dishes to its already diverse menu, writes Michael Holland...

Owner brothers Kumar and Bhola explained ‘Customers were asking us to put certain things on the menu, which they enjoyed so they asked for more, so in the end we decided to go the whole way and now we want Greenwich Weekender to be the first to taste the new dishes.’

Myself and Mum were welcomed with warm smiles and cold beers and a catch up on all the news since our last visit. We decided to allow the experts to choose for us so Bhola returned to his kitch-en while Kumar brought poppadum and pickles and teased us with tales of the Aloo Chat he would be bringing soon; a creamy, rich potato dish with spices, yogurt and chutney. But before that we were enticed with Veggie Samosas: crispy, flaky affairs with a filling with a kick that I subdued with an Indian beer.

Kumar saw we needed a break after all those starters and allowed us ten minutes before the next plate. At this point I was already telling myself I shouldn’t have had that last samosa.

Lamb Chops appeared with salad and dip. I cut into one and knew it was excellent meat, and too good to pussyfoot around with so we both picked them up to have a good gnaw to ensure no meat was left on the bone. Silence set in as we ate, broken only by an occa-sional ‘Hmmmm’.

Next was the Ajwain Jhinga, a shoal of grilled prawns. But not just prawns, these were giant prawns that were meaty and meant business. Prawns that I’d back to

to the table and asked how spicy we liked our curry! More? I almost pleaded with him to stop, but I heard ‘Rogan Josh’ and all thoughts of retiring went the same was as

the prawns and chops. ‘Medium hot,’ said Mum. ‘But give us a few minutes before you bring it.’

Fortunately, Kumar left a while for us to prepare for the next round but once again the table became laden with a fall-off-the-bone Lamb Shank Rogan Josh and an exquisite Butter Chicken. And this was when they really peaked.

With the rice and bread it was all too much to finish so I returned home with a full bag of Indian delights.

Toomai Square is different. Toomai Square is big, bright, on trend and more like a cocktail bar and diner than an Asian restaurant.

But that is not its USP, it’s the cooking and service that brings peo-ple back again and again.

The restaurant is planning to start an exclusive Kids Zone during afternoons, with a separate Kids Menu. An all inclusive express lunch menu (£5.99) will also be unveiled soon.

History

Dreadnoughts, wharves and ferries

Mary Mills Leaving the Creek, Waitrose and the old gas works site you can now walk along a bland river front walkway or go on the parallel Thames Street. There were several wharves along this stretch plus a jumble of cottages and pubs and a ferry. Many small enterprises came and went. The Travers Survey of 1695 shows this as an empty space – marshland with maybe osiers growing and perhaps some gardens – but by the end of the 18th century some wharves were busy here. In the mid-1970s there were still six barge repair yards along here before you got to the Greenwich Foot Tunnel – but now there are just modern flats offices and new pubs with no sign of the bustle of previous years.

Dowells Street is a new road which runs from Waitrose and the old gas works site to join up with Thames Street. It is named for a local coal merchant. The riverside path is ‘Dreadnought Walk’ named for the next wharf we come to after the gasworks which was called ‘Dreadnought Wharf’. It seems to have been in use from the mid 18th century when it is marked as ‘Boat/Ship Building’ on Searles’ Map. I had assumed - as I’m sure many people do - that it was called ‘Dreadnought” because it had some connection with the famous hospital ship which lay out in the river nearby. Perhaps, I thought, it was the wharf which the ship used to unload or load goods and people.

But, no, apparently not. The Dreadnought ship apparently used a wharf on the north bank of the River. Perhaps it was just called ‘Dreadnought’ because that ship was one of the local ‘sights’ nearby.

Dreadnought Wharf seems to have been used as moorings for some of the Greenwich fishing fleet. I’ll say something about Greenwich fisherman in another article but it was a very big industry which would have dominated this area.

In 1859 the wharf was taken over by Rennie and Sons for iron ship building; they had had a site on Deptford Creek since 1837 and then were at Dreadnought for the next 56 years. They were John

and George Rennie, sons of the famous civil engineer. At Dreadnought Wharf they built iron ships -steamboats for the Indian government, gunboats for the Royal Navy and the Brazilian Government, tugs, a bucket dredger, and a torpedo gun boat. In the early 20th century they built paddle steamers of 200 passenger capacity for the London County Council pleasure boat service Christopher Wren, Marlowe, Pepys, and Rennie. In 1915 they built a train ferry for 500 tons and they then left Greenwich and went to Wivenhoe in Essex.

The wharf was then bought by Tilbury Contracting and Dredging Company for the maintenance and repair of its vessels – they previously had a works on Providence wharf in East Greenwich as Hughes & Co. They had a large fleet of tugs, hoppers and barges which they used to provide river services. In the two World Wars, they focused on the construction and repair of small ships for the Admiralty, while the machine shops turned out components for mine-sweepers. They left Dreadnought in 1963 and are now Interserve, which is a multinational; the Hughes family remained on the Board until the 1970s.

Dreadnought Wharf was later taken on by the Anglo Swedish Electric Welding Company which was on several local wharves in this period. They promoted a new type of electric welding pioneered in Sweden by Oscar Kjellberg.

Next after Dreadnought was Norway Wharf. In the 1840s it was used by William Joyce, the Greenwich shipbuilder, whose works were nearby at Kent Ironworks – and who I wrote about in a previous issue of the Weekender. He built a number of ships here, but sadly died very young. The wharf was taken over by another engineering firm, T. W. Cowan, who made agricultural steam ploughs, road rollers and other such heavy equipment. There was also a stone merchant here and later Harvey – whose huge factory eventually stood in Woolwich Road and made boilers, fractionating towers, and perforations (yes, holes). They were followed by a string of businesses so typical of areas like this – building industry materials, skip hire, barge repairs, and so on.

The walk along the Riverside continues but the walk way is very plain with no reference to the past. Up until the 1980s all of these wharves were busy with numerous small businesses, which may not have been very beautiful but were essential to the metropolitan area. Eventually everything was swept away to be replaced for the current houses, flats, offices and superstore and with no reference to the works which had stood there Thames Street runs parallel to the river going toward the Cutty Sark. There was once a parallel road between Thames Street and the river called Wood Wharf.

This area has been described in detail in a great book by Ron Richards whose working life was spent in boat building and repair here – it is called Victorian Wood Wharf and Greenwich riverside 1820-2010. A number of buildings here, numbered 32-36 Wood Wharf were themselves known as ‘Wood Wharf’. In the 18th and early 19th centuries the area belonged to the Bishop family – and there was a lane here which went to Bishops Buildings’. I know that Ron Richards tried, and failed, to get the name used again when the new flats and offices were built. The Bishop family built barges and maintained a workshop and a sail making business here.

In the late 19th century boat building began to be replaced on these wharves by ‘lighterage firms – these were businesses which managed lighters, ‘dumb’ barges with no power which carried goods around the port. In 1967 Pope and Bond took over much of the site. They undertook boat and barge repair and were one of only a few such businesses left on the Thames – a vital facility for all craft using the River. Eventually they lost a major contract and were forced to close. Ironically the Government had ‘safeguarded’ working wharves along the River but had failed to do so for boat and barge repair works. There was a huge effort made to save Wood Wharf but it was soon taken over by developers.

There was another industry at Wood Wharf from the early 1970s – as a rehearsal studio run by the Lewisham musician, Billy Jenkins. His Voice of God Collective recorded tracks wt titles like ‘The Greenwich One Way System’ for Wood Wharf Records. However – others worked there too and for ten years the premises was used by musicians you will have actually heard of, seen on TV and

whose records you will have bought..

Horseferry Road goes down to the River from Thames Street - and ferries once ran from here to the Isle of Dogs. There had been several ferries from Greenwich over to the Island over the centuries. It is not always clear where they actually landed, although some used Billingsgate Dock, near the current foot tunnel. By the 17th century there was ‘Potters Ferry’ although its antecedents are very unclear. It was owned by the Warner family but there were also various watermen’s groups who felt they had claims and there were many disputes. In 1812 an Act of Parliament established a Poplar and Greenwich ferry.

This was a horse ferry – which carried horses and cattle and was part of the general expansion on the Island including the West India Docks. The watermen involved in the Potters Ferry were not happy about this and managed to get the exclusive right to take foot passengers.

Much aggravation ensued. The two ferries continued in parallel but it was not until the 1880s that things changed.

In 1888 a steam ferry took over the old horse ferry site. ‘Ambitious and mechanically daring’ it was designed to carry large vehicles onto steam ferry boats regardless of the state of the tide. A concrete slip was built at the end of Horse Ferry Road and down this travelled a 270 ton landing stage on rails. Underneath the end of Horse Ferry Road was a large chamber with steam engines which ran the platforms on the slips by steel cables. 20 ton weights counterbalanced these 145 feet below. This amazing device lasted less than ten yeas before it closed.

Relics of its rails can still be seen on the foreshore and the underground chamber may still be there. In the mid 1990s investigations were carried out and Clive Chambers, who was not a young man, dived down into the chamber and managed to take some pictures. Activists hoped that a Museum of the Working Thames could be established here Inevitably a developer moved in to Wood Wharf and like the rest of the area it became identikit flats and offices.

Finally – to go inland to a more recent planning battle... Until recently on the corner of Thames Street and Horse Ferry Road stood a pub. There were lots of pubs along these streets and alleyways but this one stood out because it looked a bit odd with big double doors. It has even

been suggested that it was an old fire station although Ron Richards says it had been a pub since 1840. It was called 'The Old Local Britons" - a name sometimes associated with working men's clubs and Friendly Societies particularly in the 1790s when such clubs could be contrasted with the revolutionary French.

An Amicable Society of Loyal Britons was indeed set up in Greenwich in 1834 and maybe this was where they met. This interesting building became a posh restaurant (I remember their bang bang chicken with affection) but then became vacant and has since fallen to the developers.

This was a quick look at an interesting and crowded area.

Chief Exec responds the appointment of Dr Michael Seeraj to Charlton Athletic

of equality and diversity.

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) announced that its Head of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI), Dr Michael Seeraj, will also take on the role with Charlton Athletic Football Club.

“We have a long history of working closely with the club on a range of topics, and have worked in partnership around equality, diversity and inclusion over a number of years.

The new role will see Michael spend one day a week with the club tackling EDI issues and raising awareness on equality and diversity. He has also begun delivering training to steward supervisors who work at The Valley on matchdays.

Michael has a long history of working in EDI, and currently represents Charlton as the Chair of the EFL EDI London and the South East Regional Forum.

As part of CACT’s EDI work, Charlton Invicta FC became the first LGBTQI+ friendly football team to be affiliated to a professional football club’s community trust in 2017 Staff have recently completed bespoke EDI training delivered by Michael, which is being extended to partners and external organisations to emphasise the importance

“We are committed to promoting and embedding a culture of EDI at CACT… We’re delighted that Michael will be a key part of the club’s EDI set up going forward. EDI issues are important within football and outside, and it’s great that this is being acknowledged.

1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Tideway who need to carry out an abnormal load delivery.

2. The Order will come into operation on the 15th February 2020 and the 22nd February 2020 and would continue to be valid for 18 months.

However the works are expected to take one night on each date. With backup dates of the 7th March 2020 and the 14th March 2020. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in the roads listed in Schedule 1. Whilst a rolling road block is in place to move the abnormal load 4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will not be diverted as this is a rolling closure however when the works Reach Greenwich Church Street Traffic will be diverted via Creek Road, Deptford Church Street, Deptford Bridge, Greenwich high and Vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
