The last year alone has seen Dillie tour a new solo show Love and Other Bad Ideas, and put pen to paper on a new eco-blog, ‘Shit You Don’t Need’, after years of lecturing her family on the importance of living sustainably.

As for Adèle, while best-known as a member of Fascinating Aïda, the cabaret performer has also acted in numerous theatre productions and pantomimes around the country, directing two at acclaimed venue The Theatre in Chipping Norton.

Liza, meanwhile, puts her love of performing down to having a ‘ridiculously theatrical family’. Her mum is the actress Barbara Young and her father was the esteemed screen-writer Jack Pulman, and so Liza believes she was always destined for a life on the stage. A serious musician, prior to joining Fascinating Aïda, she studied at the prestigious Guildhall School Of Music and Drama and went on to spend three years with Glyndebourne Opera, as their lead soprano. But, she says, it wasn’t until she joined Dillie and Adèle that her talents found their spiritual home.

This Saturday, February 8, the trio are bringing a selection of old favourites along with new material to the Churchill Theatre. Their new show, which premiered at the Southbank Centre back in December, promises to be the kind of uplifting entertainment we all crave in the bleak and dreary dregs of winter. Dillie Keane, Adèle Anderson and Liza Pulman – aka Fascinating Aïda – are being joined by Michael Roulston on piano for their latest tour, which is being directed by Paul Foster.

Aïda began life over 30 years ago in 1983, and between then and now, has consisted of various different members. The group quickly established themselves as a popular ‘comedy singing group and satirical cabaret act’, performing in a West End wine bar originally before catching the attention of the media and securing a TV slot later that year. Current member Adèle Anderson joined Dillie in 1984, but it was another 20 years before the group’s third member, Liza Pulman, came on board in 2004.

Why the Museum of Neoliberalism in Eltham should be on everybody’s radar

What have been the effects of neoliberalism on our society and where do we go from here?

Such is the topic of a timely and intriguing museum which opened in Eltham back in November. Called the Museum of Neoliberalism, the space is a treasure trove of cleverly planted objects, each a stark embodiment of an effect the ideology has had on our society. Curated by satirical artists Darren Cullen and Gavin Grindon, the museum is free to visit and filled with ‘de-brainwashing’ artefacts, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Let’s backtrack a bit. What even is neoliberalism? To describe it in short, slap-dash fashion, it’s the laissez-faire economic liberalism, free market capitalism and individualism that has been associated with our society roughly since the years of Thatcher. The idea for the Museum of Neoliberalism came about when Darren and Gavin learned that a group of conservatives and US Republicans had proposed a museum in honour of Margaret Thatcher, glorifying her years in office (which former prime minister David Cameron was backing at the time).

“It inspired me to think we should create a real Thatcher museum, one that wasn’t a shrine to her, that showed the destruction of her policies and her government,” explains Darren, whose studies in graphic design originally led him into a career in advertising, before he decided it was “a terrible way to make a living” and switched to fine art instead.

Darren has spent the last decade working as a satirical artist, for which he uses the language of advertising to raise awareness about the manipulation of the practice and the immoral ways in which children are targeted. Among his best-known works is Action Man: Battlefield Casualties a campaign made in collaboration with Veterans for Peace that uses the language, look and feel of old adverts for Action Man toys to warn against the dark side of going to war. Another is his Pocket Money Loans for Kids, a pop-up installation that shines the light on the dangers of getting into debt, especially when young or vulnerable.

Darren met fellow art-satirist Gavin ahead of the two working on Dismaland, a temporary installation by street artist Banksy that opened as a ‘bemusement’ park and ‘a sinister twist on Disneyland’ in Weston-Super-Mare in 2015. Darren had been running his pop-up Pocket Money Loans for Kids installation, while Gavin had created a Small Museum of Cruel Designs which featured, among other things, an uncomfortable collection of anti-sitting benches.

The pair began brainstorming ideas for what they initially envisioned would be their own Thatcher museum, but soon realised that in order for it to

work, they’d need to tell the full story of Neoliberalism as an ideology.

“We put it on the side for a bit when other projects came up for both of us, then last summer, the art director of The World Transformed [a political festival that coincides with the Labour Party conference in Brighton] got in contact, saying they’d heard about our idea for the museum and to ask if we could put it on in Brighton,” says Darren. “It was there for four days before I brought it back to Leegate, where my studio is.”

Darren had to dismantle his War Gallery, which previously took up the space in front of his studio. In terms of footfall, his gamble has paid off. “With the War Gallery, it was unusual to get any two people visiting at the same time on a Saturday,” he admits. “But the Museum of Neoliberalism has been so packed on recent weekends it’s been a bit like being in a Wetherspoons!

So far, people are really into it, and are coming from all over London and different parts of the country to see it.”

30 visitors at any one time, who won’t need more than 10 – 15 minutes to explore the whole thing. Currently it’s semi-permanent. “It’s going to be here for a year at least,” says Darren. “But there are plans to knock down Leegate Shopping Centre at some point, meaning we’d have to move it. We want to keep it going for as long as possible and eventually expand it as there’s a lot more that could be said on the topic.”

Artefacts inside the museum notoriously include a bottle of urine from an Amazon employee – a physical reminder of how those working in the tech giant’s factories are monitored and encouraged against taking loo breaks to improve productivity. Also on show is a copy of a Delta Air Lines poster that belonged to an anti-union campaign.

It suggests to employees, why pay a union when you can spend that money on a PlayStation console instead?

Among Darren’s favourite items is a collection of corporate-sponsored Scout badges, including a hypocritical Esso-sponsored forestry badge.

Another is a chilling replica of a wall from Grenfell Tower, showing a cross section of materials: the cladding, outside insulation (which was reportedly even more flammable than the cladding), the wall itself and the wallpaper of a child's bedroom. “We wanted to show how deregulation hits young people’s lives,” Darren explains.

“In a broad sense, we wanted to humanise economic ideology; to show where it’s slamming into people’s lives and in some cases, destroying them.”

How were these items sourced? “It’s been a mixture of recreating some things and hunting others down,” reveals Darren. “For example, we found the Scout badges on eBay, while the bottle of Amazon employee urine came from an online callout.”

The museum concludes with a gift shop and a chance to browse some of Darren’s former work from his recently-converted War Gallery.

On your way in or out of the museum, you’ll probably spot a sign that reveals the museum’s purpose: ‘to look back on neoliberalism, what it has done to our world; and what might lie beyond it’. Does Darren have any idea as to what that ‘beyond it’ could entail? “It depends if we succeed in overthrowing it as an ideology,” he laughs.

“I believe we have two options: we could move on from it to a left-leaning space where the market runs every single aspect of our lives, but the last election was our chance to do that and we missed it. Or, we carry on on this path and reach a climate apocalypse.

Neoliberalism has no solution for global warming, just more ideas on making money,” he says, sombrely. “It’s like if there was an asteroid heading towards the earth, neoliberals would

be selling shares in the asteroid.”

As for what visitors gain from looking around the museum, Darren and Gavin are clear: “We hope it teaches visitors who are unfamiliar with the terms surrounding neoliberalism a bit about what’s going on,” Darren says. “That it’s an ideology and there’s a plan in place for commercialising every single aspect of existence. We also hope the museum inspires some impetus towards getting involved with political action, whether that’s something like supporting the London Renters Union or getting involved with climate change protesting,” he says. “We can’t sit around and wait for the political class to do these things for us; we’ve got to take matters into our own hands.”

Review:

The Greenhouse café, Deptford

The Greenhouse is the café all community-minded people would want popping up in their neighbourhood. Perched on the perfect-forpeople-watching corner of New Cross Road and Watson’s Street, it’s an unpretentious spot (no typewriter-printed menu, no chic interiors decorated only with generic house plants and coffee table books no one really wants to read) that lives and breathes its ethos of supporting the arts and local business, writes Holly O’Mahony…

I sit down with The Greenhouse coowner Monika on a Thursday morning and note most tables around us are also occupied. To my left, students have their laptops open and are busy sharing ideas; to my right is a group of four adults tucking into a leisurely brunch. Most customers are regulars, Monika tells me, while simultaneously waving to someone walking past the window – as if to illustrate her point.

Over a steaming mug of coffee (sourced from Alchemy, a south London roastery), Monika tells me the story behind the café’s opening – and it’s sprinkled with fairytale charm. In short, Monika – who is originally from Poland and has a background as an artist – met her partner Ian, a builder, five years earlier in the Royal Albert pub, which stands directly opposite the café.

They shared dreams of setting up their own café and when the space became available the following year (albeit a little earlier than planned), they jumped on the opportunity.

The following months saw the couple, along with family members and friends, club together to turn the space into the café they’d envisioned: Ian

building its wooden tables and sorting the plumbing, while a friend built the bar and others helped sand surfaces.

The real clinch of this story, that which gives it its romantic, Hollywood-filmlike tint, came even earlier, in fact, when Monika and Ian were signing the contract and needed a witness; they grabbed the first person who walked past, an elderly gentleman named Tony. Later down the line, on the day they were due to open, Tony knocked on the door with a bottle of champagne and became their first customer. They’ve been friends ever since, recently attending Tony’s 80th birthday celebrations. (If that doesn’t make you ‘ahhh’ I don’t know what will.)

So, what exactly is the vision here?

Having spent time in a close-knit community in the US state of Kansas before moving to London, Monika knew she wanted to create a café that supported the arts and served local produce – two goals they’ve achieved (even their oh-so-popular oat milk is from Deptford). The Greenhouse is organic too where possible, and all animal produce served is free-range (the menu detailing where each ingredient was

sourced from). Sustainability – now front-of-mind wherever you sip your morning cuppa – is core here too; the packaging and straws used are compostable, while the café is powered by renewable energy.

As for art, two walls of The Greenhouse are dominated by murals: one featuring local artist Joshua Drewe’s abstract depictions of Deptford’s dockyards, the other a piece by Iva Decheva inspired by materials found along the banks of the River Thames. The lower half of the windows, meanwhile, are decorated with colourful stained glass because, explains Monika, a friend is currently using them to test out how certain materials reflect light.

The Greenhouse serves breakfast and lunch seven days a week with all staff – who Monika insists are a close-knit team – working in all areas of the business, from cooking and serving to cleaning the premises. Monika herself works in the café most days, while Ian is responsible for its management and the sourcing of supplies.

Fully sold on the tale, all that was left for me was to try The Greenhouse’s food. I opted for the scrambled egg

on toast, adding a portion of Sussexsmoked salmon. It was a hearty plate with two slabs of thick and chewy sourdough. My only complaint – along with the café door which hangs ajar, letting in a chilly draft of air – was that the egg itself was slightly dry and bitty. But this quibble was promptly forgotten when I washed the plate down with a punchy and gut-friendly ‘Ginga-ninja’ smoothie.

Having watched other dishes sizzle past – ‘mighty’ salads, an omelette and plates of ‘proper breakfast’ (aka the full works) – I’d certainly come back to try them. As I would a treat from the array of counter-propped cakes, many of which are vegan and all are either baked in-house or sourced from local supplier Cinnamon Tree. And if I had to order one right now? I’d get the signature Green Velvet cake (made with spinach and lathered in cream cheese icing), an indulgence that, laughed Monika, is far from vegan.

Even though my visit coincided with the bleak midwinter, The Greenhouse lived up to its name, with sun and light pouring in sporadically as I sat, sipped and soaked it all up. Its fairytale-esque story is one that suits

Monika, who’s warm, friendly and sunny. There’s talk of a ceramics studio opening up downstairs in due course, but don’t wait for that: this experimental café, full of love and genuine neighbourly vibes, is already worthy of your business.

News from the Royal Borough of Greenwich

The Plumstead Centre will open to library customers for the first time on Monday 10 February.

Over the last 15 months we have refurbished the Grade II listed building which housed the original Plumstead Library.

We’ve created the new library in a manner befitting the historic status of the building as well as providing modern facilities and expanding the centre to include a leisure centre, community rooms and a café.

Since August 2018, Plumstead Library has been temporarily located on part of the Abery Street car park, ensuring that local children and residents had access to all their library services while the renovation took place.

The temporary library will close at 5.30pm on Friday 7 February.

Its store of books and computer terminals will be boxed and transported across to the Plumstead Centre, which will open to library customers on Monday 10 February. Any library items due back on these moving days will be carried over until Monday, so there will be no fines for not returning items due back on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 February.

The leisure centre and other areas of the Plumstead Centre will be open to the public from Monday 17 February.

Children’s social care services at Royal Borough rated ‘Good’ by Ofsted Following a four-day visit from Ofsted inspectors, the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s children’s social care services have once again been rated ‘Good’ in all categories.

Ofsted’s inspectors found that our “well-trained, supported and motivated workforce” is performing well to ensure that “children who need help and protection receive a service that is timely and of good quality”.

Our frontline, senior staff and elected members were all commended by the inspectors, who stated that a “good quality of work…has been sustained and improved” with a “broad range of preventative and targeted services”.

Young people from Hawksmoor Youth Hub went ice skating in December

On Monday 10 February, Hawksmoor Youth Hub will be holding an open evening to showcase its activities to parents, carers and guardians.

Hawksmoor is one of Young Greenwich’s four main youth hubs based in the Royal Borough of Greenwich.

Claire Hallinan, Unit Manager of Hawksmoor Youth Hub, said:

Young Greenwich is the youth service CACT delivers on behalf of Royal Greenwich, and worked with more than 6,000 young people last year.

“The open event at Hawksmoor will provide an opportunity for parents/carers, new members, partner groups including schools and commissioners to come and take part in a youth session at Hawksmoor.

The open evening will take place between 5-7pm.

Young Greenwich’s youth service is for young people aged 10-19 or up to 25 for young people with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND).

Based in Thamesmead, the Hawksmoor open evening will give parents the opportunity to meet staff members, young people from the youth hub and the chance to take part in the wide range of activities Hawksmoor provides.

Young Greenwich activities include residential trips.

In 2019, members went on a residential trip to Wales for a week, following a similar trip to France in 2018.

“They will have the chance to talk to staff and members about how we meet the needs of our young people.

“Our members who attend the club will also share their experiences and reasons why they use our service and how this has made a positive impact on their lives.”

Taster sessions include Box Fit, table tennis, clay modelling and Evidence of Sexual Health and Dangers of Drugs and Awareness Workshops.

The Orders will come into operation on 12th February 2020.

2. The general effect of the Orders will be: (a) to provide electric vehicle charging parking places in the following locations (number of bays shown in brackets):

(i) Antelope Road, the north-east side, between approximately 15 and 31.5 metres north-west of Leda Road (3 bays);

(ii) Banning Street, the north-west side, outside No. 51 Banning Street (2 bays);

(iii) Broad Walk, the north-west side, opposite Nos. 2 to 6 Broad Walk (3 bays);

(x) Shrewsbury Lane, the west side, outside No. 81 Shrewsbury Lane (3 bays);

(xi) Swingate Lane, the south-east side of the main carriageway, opposite Nos. 166 to 170 Swingate Lane (3 bays); (xii) Westmount Road, the north-east side, outside No. 2 Castlewood Drive (2 bays);

(xiii) William Barefoot Drive; the east side, opposite Nos. 62 to 70 William Barefoot Drive (4 bays); and

(xiv) Zangwill Road, the north side, adjacent to No. 10 Corelli Road; (b) to remove advisory parking space and provide electric vehicle charging parking places in the following locations (number of bays

shown in brackets):

(i) Barnfield Road, the north-east side, adjacent to No. 43 Herbert Road (2 bays); and

(ii) Nathan Way, the south-east side, opposite Nos. 123 and 127 Nathan Way (3 bays); (c) on the south side of Abbey Wood Road, opposite Nos. 165 and 167 Abbey Wood Road, to remove 10.5 metres of free

(1 hour max stay) parking space and replace it with an electric vehicle charging place for two vehicles; (d) on the north-west side of Brookhill Road, opposite Nos. 31 to 34 Brookhill Road, to remove 16 metres of Zone WB permit

holders / free (1 hour max stay) parking space and replace it with an electric vehicle charging place for three vehicles; (e) on the east side of Masons Hill, near its junction with Anglesea Road, to remove 10 metres of pay and display (4 hours

maximum stay) parking space and replace it with an electric vehicle charging place for two vehicles; (f) on the east side of Robert Street, adjacent to No. 191 Brewery Road, to remove 10.5 metres of Zone PL permit holders

parking space and replace it with an electric vehicle charging place for two vehicles; (g) on the north-west side of Southwood Road, opposite No. 21 Southwood Road, to remove 10 metres of free (1 hour max stay)

parking space and replace it with an electric vehicle charging place for two vehicles; (h) on the south-east side of Stratheden Road, opposite its junction with Heathway, to remove 15 metres of single yellow line

‘zone BS controlled hours’ waiting restrictions and replace them with an electric vehicle charging place for three vehicles; (i) on the north side of Westcombe Park Road, opposite No. 2 Westcombe Park Road, to remove 10 metres of Zone EG

permit holders / free (2 hours max stay) parking space and replace it with an electric vehicle charging place for two vehicles; (j) to provide that the electric vehicle charging parking places referred to above will be available ‘at any time’ for the use of any

electric vehicles whilst charging at an adjacent electric vehicle charging post and the electric vehicle car club parking place will be

available ‘at any time’ for use by electric car club vehicles only; (k) on the west side of Well Hall Road, opposite the northern kerb-line of Well Hall Parade, to remove 7 metres of free (90

minutes maximum stay) parking space and replace it with an electric vehicles charging place (maximum stay 1 hour / no return for

2 hours) for one vehicle; (l) on the west side of Green Lane, opposite No. 197 Green Lane, to remove approximately 2 metres of single yellow line ‘zone N’

controlled hours’ waiting restrictions and 7 metres of free (1 hour maximum stay) parking space and replace it with an electric

vehicles charging place (maximum stay 1 hour / no return for 2 hours) for one vehicle and charging point; and (m) to update the map tiles attached to The Greenwich (Free Parking Places, Loading Places and Waiting, Loading and Stopping

Restrictions) Consolidation Order 2018 and The Greenwich (Charged-For Parking Places) Consolidation Order 2018 so as to reflect the

provisions referred to in sub-paragraphs (a) to (l) above.

The Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 5. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Orders or of any of the provisions contained therein on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich proposes to make the above-mentioned Orders under sections 6, 45, 46, 49 and 124 of and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

2. This notice is being re-advertised and replaces the previous notice which had the same titles as above and was advertised on the 22nd January 2020. Any objections or other representations sent in response to the previous notice will be considered together with any others received in response to this notice.

3. The general effect of the Orders would be to: (a) provide new Controlled Parking Zones (CPZs) to be called Avery Hill (AH) CPZ and Falconwood (FW) CPZ; (b) retain double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions where they are currently located within AH and FW CPZs and

provide additional double yellow line ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions:

(i) at road junctions and certain other lengths within AH and FW CPZs to prevent obstructive parking; and

(ii) in (1) Alderwood Street: (a) the west side, for 27.5 metres south of Bexley Road; and (b) the east side, for 20 metres south of Bexley Road; and (2) Bexley Road: (a) main west to east arm, the north side, for 10 metres either side of Packmores Road; and (b) access road fronting Nos. 282 to 316 Bexley Road, both sides, for 10 metres east of Alderwood Road; (c) (i) provide that AH CPZ would include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 1 to this Notice, and would operate between 11am and 1pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive (the AH CPZ hours);

(ii) provide business permit holders (or up to two hours free) parking places that would operate during the AH CPZ hours in certain

lengths of the Bexley Road service road fronting Darland House and Nos. 152 to 198 Bexley Road;

(iii) provide free parking places that would operate ‘at any time’ in certain lengths on the west side Avery Hill Road;

(iv) provide free parking places that would operate between 8.30am and 6.30pm on Mondays to Fridays inclusive (two hours

maximum stay, no return for two hours) on the east side of Avery Hill Road, near its junction with Bexley Road and in

certain lengths of the Bexley Road service road fronting Darland House and Nos. 152 to 198 Bexley Road;

(v) provide disabled persons parking places in certain lengths of the Bexley Road service road fronting Darland House and

Nos. 152 to 198 Bexley Road that would be available ‘at any time’ to blue badge disabled permit holders;

(vi) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that operate during the AH CPZ

hours in every length of road in the CPZ not occupied by the ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in AH CPZ referred to in sub-

paragraph 2(b) above or the parking places referred to in sub-paragraphs 2(c)(i) to (v) above; (d) (i) provide that FW CPZ would include the roads and lengths of roads listed in Schedule 2 to this Notice, and would operate

between 8.30am and 10am on Mondays to Fridays inclusive (the FW CPZ hours).

(ii) provide a combination of permit holders parking places and single yellow line waiting restrictions that operate during the FW

CPZ hours in every length of road in the CPZ not occupied by the ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions in FW CPZ referred to in

sub-paragraph 2(b) above; and (e) provide that residents and business users whose postal address is within AH or FW CPZ (for the purposes of AH CPZ, also including Wootton House, Aldewood Road and No. 1 Anstridge Road but excluding properties on the west side of Avery Hill Road) would be able to purchase permits and visitors’ vouchers at the rates set out in Schedule 3 to this Order: 4. A copy of the proposed Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the end of six weeks from the date on which the Orders are made or, as the case may be, the Council decides not to make the Orders, at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 5.
