Celebrate the Year of the Rat on Cutty Sark

The

If you missed the Chinese New Year celebrations at the National Maritime Museum last Saturday, there’s still a chance to celebrate the Year of the Rat in Greenwich.

Cutty Sark is hosting an art workshop inspired by its voyages to China as a tea clipper. Visitors will have the chance to create their own original pattern on a fan and take it home with them after the session.

We publish every Wednesday, covering every postcode sector of the borough, and boasting, by far, the highest weekly circulation in Greenwich.

Each week, we deliver to homes in every Greenwich neighbourhood, with further copies stocked at convenient public stands. We are also the highest distribution newspaper in Lewisham.

A deep-dive into history with Roan Theatre Company Last year, they brought us two oneact plays under the umbrella title Dinosaur Pieces. This January, Roan Theatre Company is back at Greenwich Theatre with their latest production: Atrocity, a play by Charles Evans that examines occupied France in the early 1700s, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Through the eyes of a Bristolian innkeeper and his artistic daughter, Atrocity follows the lives of those engaged in war and those who witness it.

“Atrocity arose from the playwright Charles Evans’ involvement with the Geneva Convention and what constitutes a war crime,” explains Graham Johnson, artistic director of Roan Theatre Company and also director of the production.

“Working for the Royal Navy at the time, he wanted to write a play about the Vietnam War as seen through the eyes of a war photographer, but was prevented from doing so by his commanding officer because it was, at the time, an existing conflict,” he says. “Thus, the idea to set the play much earlier, and seen through the eyes of an artist, came about.”

Roan Theatre Company started life in 1927 as ‘The Old Roan Dramatic Society’, when a teacher at Roan Grammar School for Boys in Maze Hill created it for expupils. Graham, himself a former pupil of the school, has been involved with the company since he left school over 50 years ago. “I was involved with a couple of Shakespeare productions (Macbeth and Julius Caesar) at school which whetted the appetite somewhat,” he recalls. “The ‘Old Roan Dramatic Society’ was a continuation of being involved with theatre after leaving school for quite a few ex-pupils.”

team who have the added pressure of fitting in rehearsals around other work commitments. That said, Graham insists the rehearsal process for Atrocity, which began back in November, has been a smooth one.

“Directing a non-professional production, you are aware that your actors have busy lives, so learning lines is a hurdle you like to overcome as soon as possible,” he says.

“With that achieved, we’ve been able to explore in some depth the relationships between the characters, what prompts their actions and reactions, and how the characters develop throughout the play.”

Peppered with black humour and culminating in a ‘horrific denouement’, Atrocity might not be to everyone’s tastes, but Graham is confident the play will grip its audience to the end.

“In my opinion, it’s an extremely wellwritten piece, containing some tense moments and tight dialogue,” he concludes.

Family A heart-warming tale of girlbefriends-dragon at the Albany

Encounter historical characters at the National Maritime Museum

Michael Morpurgo’s warm and fuzzy tale Mimi and the Mountain Dragon springs to life in a stage adaptation which comes to the Albany theatre in Deptford this Sunday.

Set in the snowy mountains of Switzerland, the story follows a brave young girl, Mimi, who discovers a lost baby dragon. With plenty of snow, lively songs and captivating puppetry, this production has all the ingredients needed to drive away any memories of John Lewis’ Excitable Edgar and instead, reinstate Morpurgo’s story as the ultimate tale of girl-befriendsdragon.

Every Saturday, historical, seafaring characters are resurrected at the National Maritime Museum as part of the organisation’s Character Encounters programme.

Part performance, part educational journey through history, the programme hopes to bring maritime history to life. From Chinese lascar James Robson, who served on the fastest and greatest of the tea clippers, to Pearl Morris, a Caribbean woman who travelled to Britain in 1948 on the Empire Windrush, each historical figure has their own fascinating story to tell.

Coding for kids: Coder Dojo Coder Dojo at the Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre is a chance for kids aged seven – 17 can learn to code for free. As well as learning the nuts and bolts of coding, they’ll be able to have a go at developing websites, apps, programmes and games – all in a fun and creative setting. The monthly club is a chance for budding young coders to meet likeminded peers and learn valuable skills for the future.

You won an award for the incredible amount of charitable work you do for the Greenwich community. Can you tell us more about yourself?

Greenwich is my home and has been since my husband Warren and I moved here from Australia. I’m so proud of this borough, and the vibrant network of voluntary organisations, many of which are supported by the Council. As well as being the CEO of METRO Charity, I chair the Greenwich Charitable Trust, am an Honorary Fellow at the University of Greenwich,

Why do you think looking after your local community and fighting for people’s rights is so important?

I believe in equality, and I believe in diversity. We build stronger communities if everyone is seen and heard and respected for their difference. Greenwich is incredibly diverse, and yet access to health and other services can be more difficult for disabled people, people from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds, older people and LGBT people. I’m determined to fight the good fight for celebrating difference and ensuring that everyone is included.

What has been the highlight of your work so far?

I have worked at METRO Charity for 15 years, and in that time we have grown from being a charity of eight staff and ten volunteers to being a charity of 100 staff and 65 volunteers. Seeing this charity grow across London and south east England, while knowing that Greenwich is home and always will be, makes me proud to be a Greenwich resident.

Were you surprised to have been nominated?

I was utterly surprised to be nominated for a Civic Award.

I know so many people in Greenwich who are doing extraordinary things, supporting others in outstanding ways, so I knew I was in exceptional company.

How did you feel when you found out you won?

I was absolutely delighted and felt about 10 foot tall. On the night of the ceremony, when I heard the compelling stories of others who had won Civic Awards, I felt really proud to be in such company.

What was the ceremony like?

In one word, glittering! Woolwich Town Hall looked even more fabulous than it usually does, and being able to hear about the achievements of other winners was really encouraging.

Would you encourage people to nominate people they think should win an award?

I really encourage people to nominate people they know for the Civic Awards. So often the outstanding work of individuals goes unacknowledged and unrewarded, and these awards provide a brilliant opportunity to sing from the mountain tops about the achievements of our fellow Greenwich residents.

What have you got planned for the future?

I will continue to lead METRO Charity, with our other senior leaders, including our remarkable Board of Trustees, led by the Chair, Gwen Bryan. METRO will continue to have a significant role in Greenwich, through the range of work we do including through METROGAVS and METROGAD. Greenwich is METRO’s home – always was and always will be!

NCS programme to take centre stage at Charlton game

CACT runs the NCS programme every summer and at various points of the year

On Saturday 1 February, Charlton Athletic’s fixture against Barnsley will be dedicated to the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme.

A number of free activities will be on offer for young people on the day, including a climbing wall by the Family Activity Zone and a scavenger hunt.

The NCS programme is designed specifically for 15 to 17-year-olds and runs every summer and autumn in the school holidays. Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has been delivering the programme since 2011.

CACT has delivered NCS to more than 4,000 young people, who have contributed 130,000 voluntary hours giving back to the local community.

CACT is the local delivery partner for NCS in Greenwich, Bexley and a number of districts across Kent.

Six new NCS participants will take part in a half-time penalty shootout.

Last year, more than 1,500 young people attended CACT’s summer NCS programme, and this year the aim is to get even more young people involved.

From living away for a week to get a taste of independence to creating and delivering a social action project in their local community, participants will gain a number of life skills.

There are three phases of the programme.

The ‘Be Epic’ week, the first phase, where participants live away from home for five days and spend four nights at an outdoor activity centre.

The ‘Live Life’ week, the next stage, where another five days is spent at a university campus.

And the ‘Do Good’ stage, the third, which sees participants on a community project, implementing the skills learnt during the previous phases to raise money for a charity of their choice.

Johnny Soutan, CACT’s NCS Manager, said: “NCS is a phenomenal youth programme where young people learn skills that will help them reach their goals in later life, while bringing communities together through youth social action.

“It is this part of the programme that really changes people’s perception of the youth for the better and this is the reason I love my job.”

public notices ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Thames Path] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Jacobs who need to carry out improvement works to the Sluice gate.

2. The Order will come into operation on 27th January 2020 and would continue to be valid for 6 months. However the works are expected to take 6 months. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prevent pedestrian and cyclist access to the lower footpath between the Sluice gate and Princess Alice Way. 4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted via the raised footpath alongside.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that the Council of the Royal Borough of Greenwich (hereinafter referred to as “the Council”) on 29th January 2020 made the above-mentioned Orders under section 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended. The Orders will come into operation on 5th February 2020.

2. The effect of the Orders will be on an experimental basis to change the hours of operation of the westbound bus lanes in Plumstead Road, between Pettman Crescent and Burrage Road and the waiting and loading restrictions that apply within those lengths so that they will operate between 7am and 7pm on Mondays to Sundays inclusive. [Note: waiting and loading restrictions on the south side of Plumstead Road at its junctions with Foreland Street, Lenton Street, Villas Road, Invermore Place and Maxey Road will continue to operate ‘at any time’].

The Orders provide that in pursuance of section 10(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the Assistant Director of Strategic Transportation at Greenwich Council, or some person authorised by him, may, if it appears to him or that person essential in the interests of the expeditious, convenient and safe movement of traffic or for preserving or improving the amenities of the area through which any road affected by the Orders extends, modify or suspend the Orders or any provision thereof.

The Orders and other documents giving more detailed particulars of the Orders are available for inspection during normal office hours until the Orders cease to have effect at the Directorate of Regeneration, Enterprise and Skills, Strategic Transportation, Royal Borough of Greenwich, The Woolwich Centre, 35 Wellington Street, SE18 6HQ. 6. If any person wishes to question the validity of the Orders or of any of the provisions contained therein on the grounds that they are not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, or that any requirement of that Act or of any instrument made under that Act has not been complied with, that person may, within six weeks from the date on which the Orders were made, apply for that purpose to the High Court.

The Council will consider in due course whether the provisions of the Orders should be continued in force indefinitely by means of a permanent Orders made under sections 6, 45, 46 and 49 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. Any person may object to the making of the permanent Orders for the purpose of such indefinite continuation, within a period of six months beginning with the date on which the experimental Orders come into force or, if the Orders are varied by another Order or modified pursuant to section 10(2) of the 1984 Act, beginning with the date on which the variation or modification or the latest variation or modification comes into force.
