The Snow Queen gets a modern makeover editor

A brand new adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Snow Queen is showing at the Canada Water Theatre this weekend.

Renamed Frozen Snow Queen, the show is set on an icy landscape where a young woman is searching to find her soulmate who has been kidnapped by the evil titular character. The production features two live performers plus a host of digitalised characters, and incorporates British sign language.

A traditional re-telling of A Christmas Carol

Looking for a last-minute Christmas present for a little someone who’s learning to read? Greenwich residents Charli and Matt Glass have written and illustrated their very own rhyming children’s book, Wes the Windy Walrus, and it’s hitting the shelves in time for Christmas. The colourful, cheeky book tells the story of a very gassy walrus and the adventures of his belly – while sneaking in a healthy eating message.

A Christmas Carol was the first public reading Charles Dickens ever gave of one of his own works. It was a success – so much so, that the author went on to perform it a further 150 times. Here to recreate that original performance is actor John O’Connor, who with European Arts Company is bringing a truly Dickensian production of Dickens’ best-loved ghost story to the borough.

A magic carpet, a talking monkey and a lamp-load of laughs: It’s Aladdin at the Churchill

Did you know, Aladdin is the second most popular pantomime in the world after Cinderella? It’s also one of the oldest, with performance records dating back to 1788. And while the story originates from Tales of the Arabian Nights, the pantomime version is traditionally set in China. But enough about the history. Having brought joy to Bromley with panto supreme Cinderella last Christmas, this year the Churchill Theatre has taken on Aladdin, returning the show to its original panto setting of China, writes Holly O’Mahony…

For those whose only knowledge of Aladdin comes from the Disney films or Arabian Nights books, the panto’s setting in China might feel a bit alien. What’s more, you’ll meet several new characters, too. In this particular production, Aladdin (a handsome Yazdan Qafouri) is joined by his brothers Wishee (comedian Rikki Jay), Washee (ventriloquist Max Fulham) and mother Widow Twankey (stage and TV icon Christopher Biggins). But don’t worry, the magic carpet and wish-granting genie still feature prominently.

With the show now in full swing, a role that’s sparking wonder and delight among audience members is that of Washee and his pet monkey.

We speak to ventriloquist Max Fulham about his unusual talent and his show-stealing side-kick.

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us about your journey as a performer. When and how did you start out?

Max Fulham: As a child, I could often be found performing made-up shows to whichever family members, friends or neighbours would watch for long enough. I've always loved making people laugh. I don't come from a performing background so it has been, and continues to be, an incredible journey of discovery into this world of 'show business'.

HOM: Were comedy and ventriloquism the first mediums you were drawn to performance wise?

MF: I started out in dance classes as a child. I loved a boogie and was obsessed with the film Happy Feet. It made me want to learn how to tap dance. My love of making people laugh has been there for as long as I can remember, though.

The ventriloquism began when I was about nine-years-old and my parents bought me a puppet for Christmas. I used to spend hours practicing in front of my bedroom mirror with this puppet, to the extent that the carpet in front of the mirror was worn thinner than the rest.

Little did my parents know that this particular Christmas present would form the basis of my career!

HOM: How did you come to be in this year’s production of Aladdin?

MF: I happened to be walking past the theatre with my pet monkey Gordon and we thought we looked strangely similar to the odd duo on the poster, so we walked into the rehearsal room and the rest is history!

HOM: Touché. What makes the story of Aladdin so ideal for pantomime?

MF: Aladdin is one of the most traditional pantomime tales. It originates from the Arabian Nights stories but has been performed as a pantomime since the 1800s.

The story is full of action-packed adventure and features the fight of good against evil, which is also a main feature of a pantomime narrative. In the pantomime,

there is also Widow Twankey and several other comic roles, adding another layer to the story.

HOM: Do you have a favourite moment or highlight in the show?

MF: This show is jam-packed with laughter and entertainment for all the family. As a performer, my favourite moments are probably when I get to interact with our lovely audiences and have a good laugh.

I'd also have to say the magic carpet is a highlight – it's truly magical.

HOM: Finally, what do you hope the audience takes away from seeing your production of Aladdin?

MF: First and foremost a sense of Christmas cheer! Pantomimes allow family and friends to come together and spend a few hours in another world, away from the likes of general elections and orange presidents. It's a time to enjoy a good story, be amazed, boo, hiss and have some festive fun!

The Alchemist, Canary Wharf

The Alchemist, a cocktail chain with branches in Covent Garden, Shoreditch, the City and in a spattering of other cities across the UK, has opened a new hub amid the polished skyscrapers of Canary Wharf.

With its specialism theatrical cocktails (those with a focus on showmanship and flamboyance) and a predominantly corporate clientele, The Alchemist’s new site in London’s finance hub seems like a no brainer. In fact, you might wonder what took it so long to set up shop here, or assume it’s been around for years, writes Holly O’Mahony…

We visited the Alchemist on its opening week, lured in by the promise of theatrical entertainment (which there was no sign of in the corner of the sprawling bar – two long floors – in which we were sat). Despite having just opened, both floors were filled to capacity with twenty-something banker types knocking back drinks and looking so at home in the surroundings you would assume it had been their local ever since they donned their first suit and arrived in the dizzy heights of this shiny but soulless part of town.

As for the cocktail menu, forget the current trend for minimalist drinks made with a few select ingredients, half of which have been fermented on site. At The Alchemist, drinks arrive like the product of a fun chemistry lesson: fluorescent in colour and bubbling, foaming, smoking or brandishing flames. Meanwhile, their whipped cream crowns and heady mix of sugary syrups will awaken the giddy excitement of your inner 16-yearold self who only drank alcopops.

You don’t have to get to grips with your chemistry to know which tricks each of the 50+ cocktails will pull off, either. Just browse the ‘chemistry and theatre’ section of the menu and choose your poison from drinks with says-it-on-the-tin names like ‘the colour changing one’ or ‘the caviar one’. It’s dumbed down, yes, but two rounds in and you’ll be glad of the simplicity. Plus, even cynics will admit it’s a refreshing break from hip cocktail menus with their so-exotic-you-haven’t-heard-ofthem ingredients and spirits listed only by their niche brand names.

Me? Feeling a little overwhelmed by the concept and sceptical about the quantity of E numbers muddled in each drink, I eased myself in with a plain old margarita. With just three ingredients, it’s a tough drink to get wrong, and thankfully it passed the test. It also left me brave enough to order a ‘Sailors Punch’ (a surprisingly light mix of rum, banana and tropical syrups), which sits on the newest and most up-to-the-minute portion www.weekender.co.uk

of the menu: augmented reality.

Unfortunately, said augmented reality element proved to be a little underwhelming for the faff involved. As the drinker, I was asked to download an app, scan a code on the place mat and wave my phone at my drink until a sketch of a skull appeared above it. Almost as soon as this vision had appeared, the hovering waitress swept away the magic-inducing coaster to pass it onto the next unknowing drinker, leaving me confused as to what the point of it was. Next time, I’ll take the cocktail straight up, thanks.

We ate, too. With a menu that spans everything from burgers to Asian salads via fajitas and falafel wraps – with no specialities – it’s clear that food is not the priority here. What the majority of dishes have in common, though, is that they’re salty and carby enough to appeal to tipsy clientele looking for sustenance to get them through the early portion of the night.

A starter of duck gyozas reminded me why I usually opt for veggie ones (unless in Wagamama, where they’re consistently spot on).

Four slippery parcels arrived luke warm and housing overly salted, garlicky morsels of a mush one can only hope really did contain duck. A main of Braised Beef Ragu was better: salty sesame noodles acting as a base for a sizeable portion of stewed and shredded meat, infused with a mild kimchi and dusted with toasted coconut.

It’s worth mentioning that there’s no trace of vegetables hidden away in this warm bundle of comfort, which is fine if you’re simply eating to line your stomach. Personally, I wished I’d taken the waitress up on her suggestion of a side.

Though not for everyone, The Alchemist has well and truly found its home in Canary Wharf.

In the bleak mid-winter November was mostly overcast with higher than average rainfall; this left the ground saturated, making it difficult to finish year-end gardening tasks. A cold snap arrived mid-month bringing low temperatures, and a few welcome bright sunny days.

December weather is usually changeable and often becomes milder and wetter as Christmas approaches. This year’s winter Solstice will fall on December 22nd and marks the beginning of winter. All but essential gardening work stops for a month or so.

There is still time to organise gifts; the gardening sections in High Street book shops can provide inspiration on every subject from pruning to companion planting. But if time is limited, why not browse Hive books www.hive.co.uk.

Alternatively a year’s membership for Kew (starts at £71) or the RHS (£63) may be a welcome gift. Tools are a tricky choice; gardeners can be fussy about what they use!

As winter begins, the focus will be on evergreens – Fir/Spruce trees, Holly, Ivy and Mistletoe, as pot or cut plants. They have symbolic meaning in ancient folklore and we continue the tradition of using these plants for festive celebrations. Ivy (Hedera) is often sold as an indoor pot plant (but found in gardens, scrambling up walls and trees) and was used to decorate rooms during mid-winter festivals; it is also supposed to bring luck.

Holly (Ilex) with its spiky dark green leaves and red berries is a symbol of fertility and said to protect from witchcraft. It is a useful shrub to grow as a hedge or single specimen tree; tolerating shade and needing little attention. Mistletoe (Viscum album) is a talented and mysterious plant; a parasitic shrub - it grows on a host tree (Apple, Lime, Hawthorne, Poplar). The berries are ‘planted’ by birds wiping their beaks on branches, the seeds get stuck in crevices (birds do not like the acidic sticky seeds). Mistletoe nestles high up in the tree canopy remaining unnoticed during leaf cover. The twigs and leaves of Mistletoe (not the berries which are poisonous) have medicinal qualities and are used in herbal medicine.

Always seek professional advice from a qualified Medical Herbalist before using plants/herbs to treat any illness. Mistletoe is a sacred plant to the Druids; it is believed the custom of kissing under the Mistletoe originates from Druid ceremonies!

Charlton to host CACT participants at Boxing Day game

CACT organise trips for Extra Time members, with the aim of the programme to reduce social isolation

Participants from two Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) older people’s programmes have been invited to Charlton Athletic’s game against Bristol City on Boxing Day.

Up & At ‘Em, which CACT delivers on behalf of Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, is for over 65s with a mental health diagnosis. It has won two national accolades this year.

Oxleas NHS are supporting the event at The Valley, and their Director of Forensic & Prison Services, Keith Soper, will also attend the day.

The Extra Time Hub CACT runs on Wednesday mornings, with funding from the English Football League Trust, Sport England and the National Lottery, is a chance for over 55s to get together and take part in a range of activities. These include singing for health, exercise to music, table tennis and bingo.

The hub, which attracts more than 60 participants weekly, looks to bring together retired and semiretired people to engage them in active ageing.

Both programmes look to avoid social isolation, and the Club have invited the individuals to help ensure participants do not feel isolated at this time of year.

The participants will enjoy a meal in the Royal Greenwich Suite before the game, while the Club have also ordered hats and scarves from kit supplier Hummel for guests to wear.

Carl Krauhaus, CACT’s Head of Early Help & Prevention, said: “Our Up & At ‘Em project has received national recognition this year for the impact it has for those who attend. We work all year round with Oxleas to provide activities and a platform to help people manage their mental health within the community.

“Boxing Day can be a lonely time which could lead to increased feelings of isolation over the festive period.

Being able to come to the Valley for a matchday experience including a meal in the lounge followed by a ticket to watch Charlton hopefully secure three points will, I’m sure, offer a focal point for people on the day.”

Not me, of course, I had meatballs with pasta; that’s how Charles Dickens prepared for his public readings, writes Michael Holland...

Using Dickens’ original scripts John O’Connor recreates the popular readings that the great writer performed 150 years ago, by playing all the parts, with all the accents and their varying intonations and undulations.

Whether he be a small girl or a wizened ghost, O’Connor painted vivid scenes in our heads. With the minimum of props and set, the actor takes us expertly through the night before Christmas.

The night when Ebenezer Scrooge, a man who had fallen into a life of misery, was given the chance to live a life of happiness if he so wished.

Yes, A Christmas Carol has whole swathes of Dickens own life within in its chapters; his memories of being poor and in debt, and the consequences of a harsh society that put his family into jail instead of reaching out a helping hand. But his writing was a catalyst for change.

Best of all, for me, was meeting and adoring Mr & Mrs Fezziwig, a couple with hearts full of happiness, joy, kindness and generosity - All the human traits that Scrooge once possessed but had now left behind in his pursuit of money.

And A Christmas Carol is timeless.

While O’Connor shows the poor making the best they can from very little, so 4 million children live in poverty in the real world. On the very day that a sick boy has to sleep on a cold hospital floor while the Prime Minister refuses to acknowledge his existence, so Bob Cratchit struggles to provide for his family and crippled son. Where is our Dickens for today? Who is standing up for those that need it now, in 2019?

John O’Connor is the perfect storyteller for this work at this time.

And there is a joyous, happy ending, so Merry Christmas everyone.
