Award-winning company Sh!t-faced Shakespeare have a simple – albeit bawdy – formula for their shows. The premise: a serious adaptation of a Shakespearean classic, but with an entirely sh!t-faced (aka drunk) cast member. The result: a raucous night at the theatre. The company is bringing its A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the Churchill theatre on November 22. We can’t predict how the evening will pan out, but with the knowledge that one actor will have been drinking for four hours before the show, let’s just hope there’s not more vomit than verse.

“Growing up, I had no idea comedy was a viable career option” Interview with comedian Sofie Hagen

Sofie Hagen started out as a comedian in her birth home of Denmark. Since moving to London in 2012 – where, you know, she’d really like to stay post-Brexit – her career has been on a constant rise, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Sofie was the first female comedian to win the Laughing Horse New Act of the Year Award in 2013 and her first show Bubblewrap – about ‘body image, mental health and boybands’ – received a spate of four and five star reviews at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2015. Her following two shows – Shimmer Shatter (2016) and Dead Baby Frog (2017) – were confessional pieces about her personal experiences of emotional abuse. While more serious, they drew the attention of the national press and took Sofie from ‘one to watch’ to mainstream comedian. This year, she’s back with her fourth show, The Bumswing, which is coming to Blackheath Halls this Friday as part of a national tour.

Whilst growing up, Sofie had no idea comedy was a viable career option.

“I remember discovering comedy aged 10 when I first saw a Danish comedian performing on TV,” she recalls. “I ran into my grandmother’s room and was like: ‘oh my god you have to see this! There’s a man on stage, and he’s talking and it’s funny!’” But it was years later that

Sofie first walked onto a stage, picked up a mic and performed a routine herself.

While still in Denmark, she tried a number of careers first, as well as studying Russian and Persian. “I tried being a social worker, a child psychologist, I worked for charities as a fundraiser and even ran my own department for Save the Children,” she says. “I was good at some of them, horrible at others, but nothing ever really stuck.”

Before discovering the open mic circuit herself, Sofie had assumed that standup comedians simply got up on the stage and improvised a sketch out of whatever came into their head. It was while watching a comedy gig that the penny finally dropped. “I remember someone commenting ‘that joke was so wellwritten’ and I was like, ‘I’m sorry, what?’. I’d always loved writing so when I realised that writing your jokes was not only an option but how it was generally done, I started doing it. A month later, I had my first gig,” she smiles.

Sofie looks back on her early days in comedy with a humbled affection. “We used to do this really nerdy thing after open mics, where all of the comedians would go to the local pub and sit around someone’s phone watching excerpts of Never Mind the Buzzcocks,” she reveals. “I watched it again recently and realised so many of the people on it are now friends of mine.”

Having started out in comedy with no expectations to make any money from it, Sofie never saw her success coming. “Each time I did a gig I just knew I wanted to do another.

I’m still just taking everything as it comes,” she says, matter-of-factly.

“I cannot imagine not performing comedy. Even if I have to get another job to keep me going, I will always be doing this – even if I don’t get paid.”

Sofie needn’t worry about that any time soon, though. The comedian has tour dates for The Bumswing booked through until June 2020. Her latest show is more lighthearted than its predecessors.

“My previous shows were about depression, anxiety and emotional abuse, and I realised talking about those things on stage made me feel sad,” she admits.

“Having to stand on stage and talk about your oppression all the time can be really draining. If your show is successful, you could end up performing it 300 times. The Bumswing is my attempt at talking about something that matters without me being traumatised by it, and while still making sure it hits home with the audience.” So far, so good for Sofie. “It’s my favourite show to date,” she beams. “I really, really love doing it and the audience still gets to hear about important things that aren’t all puppies and rainbows.”

The Bumswing tour is Sofie’s longest to date, but she and her support act, comedian Will Duggan, have found a very specific way to keep morale up while on the road. “We go to this magnificent place called Toby Carvery. It takes British food and makes it into a daily buffet - it’s my favourite thing about this country,” she giggles. “It was Will who introduced me to Toby and together, we basically do a roast a day. I think we’ve been to 15 different Toby Carveries. We always manage to find one, even if we have to travel an hour out of the way to do so.”

Sofie is not just a standup comedian, though. She’s a mover and shaker, determined to use her

voice to overhaul the currently ridgid experience of being an audience member. As well as being a vocal campaigner in the fat acceptance movement, with her Shimmer Shatter tour, Sofie invited anxiety sufferers to contact her before the show, so that she could find ways to make the experience more comfortable for them. What’s more, she asked the venues at which she was performing to provide gender neutral toilets for audience members who identified as neither male nor female.

Despite being on the road with The Bumswing for the next eight months, Sofie is already planning her next show. Those who come to see her perform at Blackheath Halls this Friday might even catch a joke or two from it in the second half of the gig. “Some jokes might make it into my next show, others will only be performed the once.

But I can’t reveal what they’ll be about just yet,” she chuckles.

Anyway, for now it’s all about The Bumswing.

Andrew Pollard gives Sleeping Beauty his panto treatment

For many, pantomimes are a novelty that embody everything camp and silly about Christmas. But to Andrew Pollard, Greenwich’s panto connoisseur, they’re “sacred”. The festive season sees Andrew return to Greenwich Theatre with his 14th panto: Sleeping Beauty. This year, the tradition is particularly special, chiming in with the 50th anniversary celebrations of the theatre reopening, writes Holly O’Mahony…

Andrew has been at the helm of Greenwich Theatre’s Christmas pantos since 2004, when the theatre was under Hilary Strong.

“Hilary wanted to stage a panto at Greenwich Theatre and asked if I wanted to have a go at writing it,” he told the Greenwich Weekender in an interview last year. He chose Aladdin, re-writing the story in panto form to be the theatre’s Christmas show that year. Fifteen years later and Andrew has been writing, directing and often performing as the dame in the theatre’s pantos ever since, taking one Christmas off to tour a production of Around the World in Eighty Days.

For his 14th panto, Andrew is adapting the classic fairytale Sleeping Beauty.

Traditionally, the story tells of a princess who is cursed to sleep for a hundred years until she is woken with a kiss by a handsome prince.

In the hands of Andrew, audiences can expect a modern retelling, in this instance complete with time-travel, continent-hopping, an unlikely hero and an even more unlikely villain.

As well as writing, directing and performing in the pantos at Greenwich Theatre, Andrew has made a name for himself writing pantos for other theatre’s across the country. It’s not the first time the panto meister has adapted Sleeping Beauty, either: he wrote a production of it for the Chipping Norton Theatre in 2017. As to how similar the two productions are is yet to be seen.

Either way, Greenwich remains Andrew’s comedy lab. “With

Greenwich I don’t have to answer to anybody – which I love,” he told us last year. “It gives me the chance to experiment a bit and try new comedy routines. Once I know what works, I can slot similar skits into pantos for other venues.”

For Andrew, part of the joy of pantomime is in its fluidity; it changes to keep up with the times while staying true to its defining traits. “Panto is one of the oldest theatre traditions in Britain and is uniquely British; no one else really does it,” he told us, adding that the key to creating a successful panto is to take a traditional fairytale and populate it with new pop songs, topical jokes and timely references.

In that way, pantos are reactive.

“They change to reflect the tastes of the time.”

While pantos are sacred to Andrew, he acknowledges that their charm lies in the fact they’re essentially a big celebration of silliness. “Pantos are a complete family show; we taylor ours so that everyone in the family can get some enjoyment out of watching it,” he told us ahead of his production of Robinson Crusoe last year. “[Pantos] get a bit of a knock from some quarters but I think that when they’re done well, they’re such a joy.”

Playing the victim card and why it’s never my fault Welcome to my article where I discuss the sticky subject of victim mentality and blame culture. Sounds heavy doesn’t it? However this is a behaviour that we can easily slip into and it has such a negative impact on our lives, that it’s best to be aware of it. You may well ask ‘who me?’ And the answer is yes, all of us resort to this behaviour at least some of the time and it’s a really good idea to recognise it so you can always have a choice about how you want to behave, writes Carrie Brooks...

Playing the victim card is a very comfortable place to be. As a victim you can blame everyone and everything for where you are in your life right now and not bear any of the responsibility yourself. Now be honest here, how many times have you blamed someone else for the circumstances in which you find yourself? We need to be truthful here as it’s a trap we can easily fall into and it can develop into our go to, default reaction. What I mean here by the term default reaction is something that we do automatically without giving it a second thought.

While working with my clients I always highlight when they are reverting to victim mode, explaining that when are playing the victim and blaming other people, we are in fact powerless to affect any change.

The opposite here is to step into our own personal power by taking full responsibility for precisely where we

find ourselves in our life right now.

This is the mindset where we have the power to change what we don’t like or want and move towards positive life enhancing solutions.

Many times we are not even aware that we are giving our own personal power away by playing the victim in a scenario and passing all the blame onto another person. We may feel righteous justification in the beginning, however this will inevitability leave us feeling vulnerable and disempowered in the end. It is so much more courageous and life enhancing to take full responsibility for the events in your life. Yes, my boss may well be a tyrant and a bully but I cannot blame him for me choosing to remain in the job. And yes, my partner may be unfeeling and selfish but where do I fit into this scenario? If I continue to blame my partner for the state of

our relationship, nothing will ever be resolved and doesn’t it take two to tango?

It is a powerful decision to choose to resist adopting the safety cloak of a victim mentality, and once you become aware of this behaviour in yourself and others, you will feel very uncomfortable conforming to it. It’s like Neo in the Matrix being offered the choice of the blue or red pill and once he took the red pill there was no going back! By making this positive choice you can properly take control of your life and sit firmly in the driving seat, instead of just being the passive passenger. We all need to take moments out where we honestly confront ourselves and ask the question ‘what is really going on with me here?’ This ability to step back and take stock and challenge any default behaviour will always stand us in good stead.

Another aspect of adopting a victim mentality is that you are powerless to change any situation you find yourself in and therefore risk things not working out. This brings us neatly on to the concept of failure. When I coach people I introduce the concept of replacing the word failure with re-direction instead. The idea being that you try something and on reflection you can see that it hasn’t quite turned out as you wanted. Now this gives you the perfect opportunity to consider what has worked and what you would do differently next time. This becomes a powerful redirection and as we all know success in both our personal and professional lives does not happen in straight lines but more along the curves of a zig zag. If we can face our challenges and see them as a process for developing our lives in the direction we want, we are

onto a positive win-win scenario.

Also it is far less scary to see any endeavour as a process, a fine tuning leading to promising results, rather than seeing it as failure and a dead end, sabotaging all the best plans and inspired ideas. This positive way of thinking is very evident in how athletes use a losing performance as an opportunity to get back to the drawing board and hone in to how they can improve next time, thereby improving their overall game. Re-direction in its essence.

So let’s become more aware of our behaviour, whether we are having the tendency to blame others for where we are in our lives right now, or are using this mindset to hold us back from making positive changes. Let’s take responsibility and step into our personal power because this is when life gets really interesting!

Participant reflects on CACT’s mental health programmes as WJ King Group extend partnership

WJ King have committed their support to CACT for a further three years

Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT) has announced a new partnership with WJ King for a further three years.

On Thursday 7 November, WJ King’s Woolwich branch provided CACT’s Head of Early Help of Prevention, Carl Krauhaus, with a brand new Vauxhall Grandland X. CACT runs a number of Early Help & Prevention programmes in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, and the car allows Carl to transport participants between them and travel to them himself.

WJ King have supported a number of CACT initiatives over the years, including the annual Upbeats Walk, where Charlton fans walk from the club’s Sparrows Lane training ground in New Eltham to The Valley to raise money for the Down’s syndrome programme.

The Early Help & Prevention strand combines disability programmes like the Upbeats, frame football and autism inclusive football with mental health and mentoring programmes.

Speaking about the new partnership and car, Carl said: “I am very grateful to WJ King for their continued support. I drive to

programmes across South East London and Kent every day to reach the people supported by the Early Help & Prevention team.

“By providing this car, WJ King help us keep our costs as low as possible so we can support as many people as possible.”

Carl uses the car to travel to Early Help & Prevention programmes South East London and Kent.

One participant from CACT’s Up & At ‘Em mental health programme said: “I appreciate all the care and support shown to me.”

Run in partnership with Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust, Up & At ‘Em is a programme for over 65s with a mental health diagnosis. It is designed to reduce social isolation and enhance participants’ physical health and mental wellbeing through activities within the community.
