This is the question posed by Entita Theatre, who have reimagined both stories in Curtain’d Sleep, their latest show which comes to the Greenwich Theatre stage this week. Fusing together movement, Shakespeare’s words and an underscore of folk music of Seth Lakeman, Curtain’d Sleep aims to be an intensely captivating piece of theatre that stages the previously unseen.

BBC Singers perform on Cutty Sark

T

he BBC Singers, who last year performed on Cutty Sark as an early commemoration of the ship’s 150th birthday (officially being celebrated this month), are back again. This time, they’re performing a selection of choral pieces, including Ralph Vaughan Williams’ ‘The Lark Ascending’ and Elgar’s ‘Nimrod’. The concert is being led by conductor Sofi Jeannin, writes Holly O’Mahony…

The concert marks the third time the BBC Singers have performed at the iconic venue.

“As well as being a beautiful visitor attraction, Cutty Sark also has stunning acoustics for choral music,” points out Jonathan Manners, producer of the BBC Singers. “It's allowed us to explore a range of new repertoire and we are delighted to be bringing some of the best works of choral music to audiences in Greenwich.”

The BBC Singers are the professional chamber choir of the BBC, known for the broad remit of music they cover.

The group have performed everything from Baroque vocal music to the compositions of Laura Mvula in the past. “The great thing about the BBC Singers is the versatility of their output,” says Jonathan.

“Sometimes it’s classical music, sometimes it’s arrangements of contemporary songs by artists such as Elton John and George Michael, and then we’ll perform music from the golden age of jazz with big band.”

The Cutty Sark concert sees all 18 BBC Singers come together to sing the chosen choral works. The choir is also being joined by a special

guest for ‘The Lark Ascending’: violinist Elodie ChousmerHowells, who was a string section finalist in the BBC Young Musician competition in 2018. The arrangement marks the first time the Vaughan Williams’ piece will be heard in the UK with a choir singing the part of the orchestra. “This will be the highlight of the concert,” beams Jonathan. “Audiences will hear ‘The Lark Ascending’ as [they’ve] never heard it before.”

Jonathan and his team have curated a programme they hope will be fittingly relaxing for a Sunday afternoon. “Think of a live chill out playlist,” he says.

“We’re even putting bean bags out for audience members, and they’ll be able to have a drink from the bar during the concert.”

Despite this being the third time the choir will have performed on Cutty Sark, Jonathan says the singers are still impressed by the vessel as a concert setting. “You’re really aware that you’re under a massive ship,” he laughs.

“It’s awe-inspiring to think that this amazing piece of nautical engineering is above you, and the acoustics are so perfect for music. The sound really does wash over you.”

This, he says, is an important reminder for the audience that music can sound great anywhere. “You don’t have to be in a theatre or concert hall.

Amazing spaces to make music are all around us.”

Meet the husband and wife team behind London’s only contemporary print fair

The fair has increased significantly in size this year: 500 specialists and artists are exhibiting their work, up from 350 in 2018. Jack and Lizzie put this growth down to the fair gaining recognition for the high calibre of work on show. “Everything is handpicked and our curated exhibition format reiterates the academic training behind our team, as well as the hand-built nature of the whole fair,” explains Jack, adding that they’ve honed

Brocket London, our gallery in Kennington, we hosted a number of ‘new collector’ evenings to encourage and educate budding art collectors,” Lizzie recalls. The pair found printmaking – with its often affordable price tag – was an excellent way-in for newbies.

“We began to realise that there was a massive misconception around printmaking as a medium, with many of our friends and clients either unaware that a print could be an original artwork in itself, or of the process involved in its creation,” explains Lizzie.

“Furthermore, as a printmaker himself, Jack was keen to promote what is a rich and dynamic contemporary art scene that was very often overlooked.”

off about the up-and-coming art scene in the Royal Arsenal and decided to take a look. “We were immediately taken with the architecture of the buildings and decided to launch a fair in this space,” remembers Lizzie.

As well as offering collectors a chance to browse and buy prints, the fair offers a sizable programme of activities. “Our associated programme is free to ticket holders and includes specialist talks, tours, demos, workshops, collecting advice and family activities,” beams Jack.

This year, there’s also a dedicated ‘print-your-own’ section to the fair, encouraging visitors to get creative. “This year's fair will be bigger and slicker than previous years. We have a template now, having been in this impressive venue last year, and are returning with a greater offering for more visitors,” he says.

oolwich Contemporary Print Fair returns this week for the fourth year running. The fair – which remains the only contemporary print fair in London – was established by artist Jack Bullen and his wife, curator Lizzie Glendinning, in November 2016. Last year saw the fair moved to No. 1 Street in the Royal Arsenal, doubling the

new? “This year our art and interiors space has moved up onto the mezzanine level overlooking the fair, so visitors can enjoy a glass of wine or a colour consultation while getting inspired on how to curate art in the home,” reveals Jack.

In addition to the 500 artists exhibiting their work, the fair is also hosting a growing number of galleries, such as Pratt Contemporary and Atelier Rose Gray.

Of the work on show, are there any pieces or exhibitors Jack and Lizzie are particularly excited to host? “We are really excited to be showing Emma Stibbons and Anne-Marie James this year, as they have some beautiful pieces, and Jack was really taken by Anne-Marie’s Dürer series last year,” says Lizzie.

“Alan Kitching will be showcasing his full portfolio of London A-Z for the first time and we will

also be doing a showcase of 10 works by Hormazd Narielwalla, who has shown with us since our inaugural show in 2016. I personally am a big fan of his work.”

Jack and Lizzie spend all year working on Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair. As soon as one festival is wrapped up, it’s time to start planning the next. While it’s set to be the biggest iteration of the event yet, the planning of the 2019 fair has not been without its hurdles.

One of which has been the delayed opening of Crossrail.

“It’s been a major hurdle to contend with as we had been anticipating that the Crossrail opening would attract more people due to quick transport from central London, but we're confident people will continue to travel to the area to experience the fair,” says Jack.

The year ahead is set to be a busy one for both Jack and Lizzie. The couple have only recently had a baby and are in the process of moving from their Kennington space after four years there. What’s more, Lizzie is starting a PhD next spring and Jack has several big shows to prepare. For now, though, all attention is on the print fair, which the pair believe is fundamentally about creating an exhibition space that makes contemporary prints both accessible and exciting to visitors.

“I hope visitors will come away feeling that they’ve had a full, fun and informative experience,” says Jack. “If they find a piece of work that speaks to them then all the better, as we hope to encourage more people to feel they can comfortably engage with contemporary art.

But ultimately, the discovery of original print through our interactive programme, new artists and the overall experience is our goal.”

Royal Greenwich takes to the water to deliver Borough of Culture bid in style On Monday 28 October the Leader of the Council Cllr Danny Thorpe was joined by more than 120 local people to hand-deliver the Royal Greenwich bid for Borough of Culture 2021 to City Hall.

Boarding the Thames Clipper at Woolwich Pier, the group - made up of local performers, school children, arts, culture and community groups travelled to London Bridge to make their way to the Mayor of London’s office. It was a spectacular morning of performances where, in the spirit of the bid, school children and community groups performed alongside professional artists in an extravaganza of dance, music and song.

Carnival-style drummers from Taru and South London Samba led the procession from London Bridge Pier to City Hall where there were a cappella songs from Plumstead Manor School and performances from local dance groups as Cllr Danny Thorpe handed in the bid. Greenwich Music Hub rounded off the morning with musical entertainment on the Clipper back to Woolwich.

As well as the title award of London Borough of Culture, there are Cultural Impact Awards up for grabs. These will be in the region of £200,000 for individual projects that take place between 2021 and 2023. Winning boroughs will be announced in January 2020.

Lest We Forget: Black History Month and Armistice Day commemorated together on stage

ctober marked Black History Month and in the coming few days, we’ll acknowledge Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day respectively.

Sandwiched between these occasions of historical significance is a play which unites them: Lest We Forget. Written by actor and writer Charlotte Green, the play – which premieres at Greenwich Theatre this week – spans pre-war Britain in 1914 to the race riots of 1919, telling the stories of black British soldier William James and white northerner Edith Booth who fall in love, writes Holly O’Mahony…

It was while co-writing A Day In The Life Of A Bottlehand, a short play about women who worked at the Cannington Shaw bottle factory in St Helens at the turn of the twentieth century, that Charlotte’s first ideas for Lest We Forget began materialising.

These ideas later cemented themselves while she was touring as an actor in France and Germany in 2017, and passing many of the World War One battlefields.

The following year marked the centenary of the end of World War One, something which was often front of mind for Charlotte, whose great grandfather had served in the war and whose grandfather and father had also held positions in the army. She knew she wanted to write a play that would, in part, honour them.

Through researching the time, Charlotte found stories about soldiers from the West Indies regiment; stories that she’d heard little about through mainstream literature and events commemorating the first world war. It was because of this that Charlotte decided to make her play a 'classic' war love story, but from a different point of view. The Greenwich Weekender spoke to Charlotte to find out more about the play.

Holly O’Mahony: The story follows a black British soldier and white northerner who fall in love. What drew you to centre the play around these two characters and are they based on real people?

Charlotte Green: It was very important to me to tell a story with fictionalised truth. I got in contact with two wonderful historians to help base my play in fact: Stephen Bourne's book Black Poppies was an invaluable source of information for me, while historian Paul Reed kindly met with me to tell me all about his research on black soldiers.

Thanks to photographic evidence, we know a black man served in the Royal Fusiliers, so I placed the character William in that regiment, then made his story one of lots of different experiences of racism.

Meanwhile Edith's character is much more fictionalised, but the interracial relationship they embark on together is again based on many people's experiences throughout history.

HOM: In the play, Edith and William find the prejudice they face as a result of their relationship nearly as hard to overcome as the war that brings them together. What made you choose to use WWI as the backdrop of the play,

while telling a story of a more personal prejudice?

CG: When I decided to set the story in World War One, I knew I didn't want to tell the tale of white men in a bunker. I started off by wanting to show the duality of war, on the western front and at home, and of both men and women. When my research led me to explore the black community in Britain at this time, the idea of an interracial relationship seemed like an appropriate route: it brought together two communities, two families and two sides of the war.

As a romantic at heart, I always want to see love triumph in the face of adversity and so I stacked the hurdles high against William and Edith, hoping they'd win out in the end.

HOM: How did you find the process of putting pen to paper and more recently, seeing your work come to life on stage?

CG: It is strange and wonderful to hear your story being told aloud when you are so used to reading it on paper. It’s incredible to see the characters you've created burst into life when the actors enter a scene. I am completely overjoyed at the talent in the room – both our cast and crew.

CG: I wrote the play in 2018 and was delighted when we received Arts Council Funding to stage the production. The play was in its infancy this time last year and we [Charlotte’s company Home Truths Theatre, which she co-runs with director David Hubball] held a research and development process which took place at Greenwich Theatre Studio. We tested scenes, held improvisations and asked for audience feedback. Our run in Greenwich Theatre Studio this week marks the premiere of the full play – I'm very excited and nervous for audience members to see it.

HOM: Speaking of which, how do you hope the audience responds to seeing Lest We Forget, particularly so close to both Black History Month and Armistice Day? CG: It was very important to me to perform over the Remembrance Day weekend and also to rehearse during Black History Month. Both are so poignant to us as a cohort as we feel this is a part of history that is missing from the books. I hope the audience are swept away with the story: from the army humour to the romantic scenes between William and Edith and, sadly, the loss of life during the war. I also hope they pick up on the similarities and differences of Britain then and today. We’ve come a long way as a country but right now, particularly in regards to racism, have we actually come that far?

What’s in store at the London International Festival of Early Music?

he London International Festival of Early Music is the world’s leading exhibition of ‘early music’ and its instruments. This weekend, the festival returns to Blackheath Halls for the fourth year running, bringing with it over 100 instrument makers from around the world as well as a programme of recitals and formal evening concerts.

Holly O’Mahony speaks to festival coordinator Heather Sager to find out more…

Holly O’Mahony: Tell us a little bit about the history of the London International Festival of Early Music. How did it come about and why?

Heather Sager: Since 1973, The Early Music Shop has hosted an International Exhibition of Early Music in London. It was originally hosted by the Royal College of Music, then moved to Greenwich’s Old Royal Naval College in 2002. When the Painted Hall Conservation Project commenced in 2015, it moved to its current home of Blackheath Halls.

As well as involving concerts, the exhibition features a vast display of early musical instruments: crumhorns, shawms, lutes and harpsichords among them. It’s also an opportunity to listen to early music concerts and shop for specialist recordings, books and sheet music relating to the field.

HOM: What qualifies as ‘early music’?

Does the festival focus on a particular era, or eras, of it?

HS: Early music is commonly defined as European classical music from the Middle Ages [500 – 1400], the Renaissance [1400 – 1600] and the Baroque [1600 – 1750] periods. So the festival spans music from all of those centuries.

HOM: Is there a particular concert, exhibitor or workshop you’re excited about having at this year’s festival?

HS: The exhibition is always such a lively hub of activity and we are particularly excited to welcome our headlining artists: Solomon’s Knot, Red Priest and Elizabeth Kenny. I’m also looking forward to recitals from the winners of last year’s inaugural Early Music Young Ensemble Competition

and the chance to listen in on our two recorder workshops led by groundbreaking recorder player Sarah Jeffery.

HOM: As well as recorder workshops, the festival features a solo recorder competition. Many of us remember learning the recorder (albeit briefly) in school, but is it actually an early instrument?

HS: The recorder was first documented in Europe in the Middle Ages and continued to be popular in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. It fell out of favour during the Classical and Romantic periods, but was revived in the 20th century as part of the historically informed performance movement.

The festival has held a recorder competition ever since 1985 and continues to be one of the major platforms for recorder players aspiring to a career as a soloist. Many of the finalists and winners are recognised as distinguished teachers or solo and chamber musicians with highly respected recordings.

HOM: Who does the festival appeal to most and why? Do many people return each year?

HS: We have many visitors and exhibitors who have been coming to the exhibition year after year. One early music publisher commented that it’s recognised as the Wimbledon of early music. It’s a chance for early music experts and enthusiasts to spend three days browsing instruments, enjoying concerts and chatting to some of the world’s leading instrument makers. Our regular attendees range from academics and students to professional musicians and families enjoying a day out.

HOM: For newbies thinking about attending the festival for the first time this year, what can they expect to take away from the experience?

HS: Enjoyment, knowledge and quite possibly a much-longed-for instrument!

n Wednesday 23 October, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Health Jo Churchill, visited Charlton Athletic Community Trust (CACT).

The visit to The Valley took place as part of the launch of the National Academy of Social Prescribing. Churchill had a look first-hand at an example of a programme individuals can be referred to through CACT’s social prescribing.

Speaking about the visit, Jo Churchill said: “Here… the community trust reaches out into the community and they had great programmes of smoking cessation, they had fabulous programmes of how to ease pain.

“But, actually, everyone has said that it’s broader than that. It’s about reaching out to you at the time you feel happy to engage with social prescribing.”

Social prescribing is a means for GPs, nurses and other care professionals to refer their patients to a range of non-clinical local services.

CACT is commissioned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to deliver social prescribing throughout the Borough.

Churchill, Minister for Public Health, Primary Care & Prevention, joined guests from the

Department of Health & Social Care and NHS England on a tour of CACT’s Health Improvement Department.

They visited CACT’s Extra Time Hub, which is supported by the EFL Trust and Sport England, and its Call Centre, another integral part of the social prescribing work CACT undertakes. Staff use a combination of telephone, online and face-to-face support to identify issues and link people to a number of community assets.

CACT’s Live Well Line operates from 8.30am-7.30pm Monday to Thursday, 8.30am5.30pm on Friday and 9am-12pm on Saturday.

James Sanderson, Director of Personalised Care at NHS England, said: “It’s absolutely right for the government and NHS to be looking at ways to support people in the community and programmes like CACT’s are fantastic at bringing together communities in a space that they recognise with that anchor institution that the football club brings to actually develop their health and wellbeing.”

CACT staff later attended a follow-up launch event at the South Bank Centre with Secretary of State for Health & Social Care Matt Hancock.

ROYAL BOROUGH of GREENWICH ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 14(1) [Hyde Vale] PLANNED ROAD CLOSURE (ORDER) 1. The Royal Borough of Greenwich makes this Order in exercise of powers under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. This is to facilitate works by Thames Water who need to carry out Water main repairs.

2. The Order will come into operation on 11th November 2019 and would continue to be valid for 18 months. However the works are expected to take 5 days. The duration of the Order can be extended with the approval of the Secretary of State for Transport.

3. The effect of the Order would be to temporarily prohibit vehicles from entering, exiting, proceeding or waiting (including waiting for the purposes of loading or unloading) in, Hyde Vale outside number 4.

4. Whilst the Order is in operation traffic will be diverted via King George Street, Point Hill, West Grove and vice versa. Prohibitions remain in force, pedestrians are not affected and vehicle access will be maintained wherever possible.

5. Nothing in this Notice will apply to anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or traffic warden, to emergency service vehicles, or to vehicles being used in connection with the works.

6. The restrictions described above will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs as prescribed by the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016.
