MAGINE BEING told that your family home is going to be forcibly bought off you – and probably at a rate that won’t allow you to stay in your neighbourhood. And then imagine you only find out when you open a letter – one day before that action is due to be considered.

That’s precisely what happened to three leaseholders on Walworth’s Aylesbury Estate – who weren’t even afforded the respect of being told face to face that their homes were probably to be taken by compulsory purchase order. And to add insult to injury, the letters were sent Second Class.

What this meant was that families were given one day to prepare themselves for Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting. And whilst a final decision was not made, it was agreed that the forcible purchase of the properties was ‘the direction this is travelling in’.

Quite rightly, Council Leader Peter John apologised to these residents, who had to listen to a council officer saying that letters were sent out last week, and add themselves that they only showed up on Monday. “There’s no nice way of telling you, so we’re sorry you only heard yesterday. I’m sorry about that. That’s not the way we should be doing things”, Cllr John told them. We couldn’t agree more.

There is a whole separate issue with leaseholders and largescale regeneration projects in terms of the rateable value of their properties. The leaseholders of this block beside Dawes Street question the offers they’ve received - £255,000 for a three-bed in one instance – which they contrast with the cost of a one-bed in the area selling for £480,000. The authority needs to secure best value, in order to invest in the regeneration scheme, yet at the same time, what’s the point of regeneration if it means that the existing residents are forced to move elsewhere?

This aside, leaseholders who find themselves in this difficult situation should expect to be treated with respect and sensitivity. Both of these are entirely missing in this instance – and they’ve been treated with contempt.

N A week where terrorism has again hit the headlines around the world, with the attack in New York, it makes us proud that one of our own here was being recognised for his selfless act of bravery at London Bridge.

Peckham policeman Charlie Guenigault was off-duty on the night of the London Bridge terror attacks, but ran to help an injured transport officer. He was then stabbed himself, in the head, back, stomach and leg. Fellow London bobby Wayne Marques, who took on the three terrorists armed with just a baton, shared the Pride of Britain award with him, whilst PC Keith Palmer, who died defending the Palace of Westminster in a separate attack in March, was posthumously honoured.

It’s right that they are seen as heroes.

Brave officer receives Pride of Britain award

A PECKHAM policeman who was stabbed in the head during the London Bridge terror attack has received his Pride of Britain Award.

Pc Charlie Guenigault, 25, on Monday received the Outstanding Bravery award at a special ceremony.

He was off-duty on the night of the attack, but ran to help a British Transport Police officer who was injured. He was then stabbed himself in the head, back, stomach and leg

after confronting the knife-wielding terrorists who had ploughed through pedestrians on London Bridge just minutes before.

Pc Guenigault received the award alongside fellow London bobby Wayne Marques, who took on the three terrorists in London Bridge using his baton.

PC Keith Palmer, who died defending the Palace of Westminster in the March 22 terror attack, was also posthumously honoured with the Outstanding Bravery Award.

The awards were presented by Carol Vorderman, and the two officers were joined on stage by Prime Minister Theresa May, Labour party leader Jeremy Corbyn, and Liberal Democrats leader Sir Vince Cable.

The awards ceremony, held on Monday at the Grosvenor House Hotel, will be screened on ITV on November 7.

Council gives thumbs-up for OVER 70 SITES disability hub - but Queen’s EARMARKED FOR Road day centre could close REGENERATION IN COUNCIL’S DRAFT SOUTHWARK PLAN

COUNCILLORS HAVE agreed to create a disability hub which is “likely” to see Queen’s Road day centre in Peckham close.

Plans to create the hub were waved through by councillors at a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, October 31.

The decision will most likely see the Camden Society-run Queen’s Road day centre close, despite fierce opposition from Liberal Democrat councillors, services users and their families.

The charity’s Riverside Centre, in Bermondsey, will remain open.

The council-owned and operated Southwark Resource Centre, in Walworth, has been identified as the preferred site to house the hub.

In a report, councillor Richard Livingstone, cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion, said: “After careful consideration of the consultation feedback, it is clear that the proposal to establish the disability hub is one that is both safe and improves services, whilst also providing the longterm sustainability of services that people with learning disabilities deserve.

“This report therefore recommends that cabinet agree to implement the disability hub proposals.”

The report also claimed the hub was the most cost effective option as “alterations to Southwark Resource Centre would cost about £40,000.

It said it would cost about £1.3million to maintain Queen’s Road as a day centre and about £175,000 to carry out recommended work, increasing to £210,000 for “desirable work”, to adapt Riverside to accommodate service users from Peckham.

MORE THAN 70 sites earmarked for future regeneration and new planning policies have appeared in the latest draft of the council’s New Southwark Plan (NSP).

Service users and their families were consulted on the proposals to create a disabilities hub in summer this year, followed by a further consultation from September to October after they raised concerns about not having enough information or time to respond to the initial one.

Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, leader of Southwark Liberal Democrat council group, said: “The Queen’s Road day centre is not just a lifeline for those with learning disabilities and their families, it’s also a vital social centre for them to gather together and lend each other mutual support.

“Consultation after consultation has told the Labour-run council that the public oppose their plans, yet they’re still going ahead.

“For many, it seems the council only consults people as a public relations tool to try and cover themselves, rather than actually find out what people think.

“Sadly, this refusal to listen or respect

the needs of the most vulnerable among us has been all too typical.”

Cllr Richard Livingstone said in response: “Throughout this process we have consulted clients and their families, and given careful consideration to how we can secure a high quality service for the future.

“We appreciate that some clients and their families do not want services to change, but we have to balance many factors.

“Given the high standard of the facilities available at the Southwark Resource Centre, we truly believe the hub will offer the best solution for everyone.

“We will work with people at the centre to help them transition to the new services. We are confident that this proposal is one that is both safe and improves services, whilst also providing the long-term sustainability of services that people with learning disabilities deserve.”

The proposal, which has gone through a series of public consultations since work started on it in 2013, was approved by Cabinet on Tuesday.

The council has dropped plans to demolish a block of council homes called Tadworth House, at the junction of Blackfriars Road and Webber Street.

Another proposed 80-home development called Landmark Court, in Southwark Street, SE1, has been changed to include a north/south cycle route through Crossbones graveyard, and an east/west route through the private development at Maidstone Buildings Mews.

Liberal Democrat councillor Adele Morris said she was “delighted” the council had “listened to ward members, residents and local campaigners and made these changes”.

It was reported last month that the Peckhamplex cinema and multi-storey carpark was dropped, following a strong campaign from residents and businesses.

Council looks to get borough up to speed with fast broadband - starting in Rotherhithe

SLOW INTERNET speeds could soon be a thing of the past for Rotherhithe residents.

The council has revealed its plans to roll out broadband speeds of up to 40Mbps across 70 per cent of the borough, beginning in Rotherhithe.

In a cabinet report, Councillor Fiona Colley said the council would sign lease agreements with network operators within the next three months, which would see wireless broadband infrastructure installed on council-owned buildings.

It will be welcome news for Rotherhithe, where broadband speeds are

so slow that some residents trek to Canada Water station to use the Wi-Fi. The council will also agree a ‘wayleave strategy’ for the installation of fibre broadband on council estates and blocks on a “first come, first served, nonexclusive basis”.

“We will continue to work with the GLA [Greater London Authority] and government, seeking to secure funding to fill any remaining not spots and to ensure that full fibre broadband is available in all parts of the borough,” added Cllr Colley, cabinet member for finance, modernisation and performance.

“We have already submitted an expression of interest to access part of the £200million DCMS funding for broadband projects and are awaiting

further information on the next steps of this programme.

“Crucially, we are establishing a digital infrastructure team and a cross-council board to implement our digital infrastructure strategy and to stay abreast of technological improvements and innovations and funding opportunities.”

The council is also involved in a pilot scheme to roll out ten ‘smart benches’ across Southwark. Smart benches are solar-powered seats providing mobile device charging ports and free Wi-Fi access.

Several ‘InLinks’ could also replace traditional pay phones in the borough, providing free public Wi-Fi, phone calls, device charging and a tablet for access to city services, maps and directions.

Although their letters only arrived a day earlier, the leaseholders were gratefully tipped off about the CPO on their homes by a former Conservative councillor Toby Eckersley.

At the meeting, council leader Peter John asked planning officers: “When would the leaseholders have known about this?”

An officer responded: “They [the letters] were sent last week.”

At which point, leaseholder Felix Badu interrupted: “They only arrived yesterday.”

Cllr John replied: “The fact that they only found out yesterday is not good enough.”

the way we should be doing things… We shouldn’t be sending people letters with second-class stamps the day before.”

It was noted that no final decision was due to be made on Tuesday about the proposed CPO. Cllr John said: “It will go through a separate process, but we need to indicate that’s the direction this is travelling in.”

Felix, 55, told the News: “A one-bed flat in this area is £480,000. I was offered £255,000 by the council in August [in compensation for the CPO] and I live with five children and my wife in a three-bed flat.”

Plans to demolish Northchurch are linked to a section of the Aylesbury, referred to as Plot 18, which were approved in December 2016. The plans include a fifteen-storey block with 122 homes (46 social rent), a library, medical centre, and a nursery.

Demolishing Northchurch was not included in the planning permission for Plot 18. But the council now says the site will be needed for use as a temporary car park during construction works, and because leaseholders will “face disruption” during construction of Plot 18.

Elsewhere on the Aylesbury Estate, the council is still locked in a drawn out legal process to gain permission from the government to use a CPO seven leaseholders in the First Development Site (Bradenham, Chartridge, Arklow and Chiltern blocks). A public inquiry into this CPO is due to begin in January.

New Civic Society to be created

SOUTHWARK: The Southwark Civic Association (SCA) has disbanded and will be replaced with a new Civic Society, following a vote by its members.

In a secret ballot, 21 of 26 members voted for a motion, that the SCA should be “wound up”, and the assets transferred to a new Civic Society. One ballot was spoiled and four voted against.

The SCA had each year’s Southwark mayor as its patron, and is the body which helps put on the annual Civic Awards scheme.

Southwark mayor Charlie Smith told the News: “We want to rejuvenate it, like a phoenix from the ashes. The membership has got old, we’re hoping that by doing this we can go our own way, and maybe recruit younger people and increase the membership. We want to promote all the civic things in the borough, do walks and talks and educational stuff. But we won’t be involved in the Civic Awards.”

The SCA’s honorary secretary Ken Hayes, who proposed the motion, said: “We can now move the SCA into a new era as the Southwark Civic Society encouraging civic pride, civic engagement, community spirit, community engagement and volunteering in the London Borough of Southwark. The inaugural General Meeting of the Southwark Civic Society will be held in the New Year when a draft constitution has been drawn up. Corporate businesses in Southwark will be invited to participate in the civic life of the London Borough of Southwark through sponsorship and engagement.”

CAMBERWELL: A film screening and Q&A with authors and campaigners focusing on regeneration and housing issues will be held on November 11.

The event at Cambridge House in Addington Square will begin at 7pm.

At 7:45pm will be a screening of the documentary ‘Dispossession: the Great Housing Swindle’.

The film will be followed by a Q&A with the speakers.

YOUNG LIONS fans had the chance to meet some of their favourite Millwall players as they became waiters for the day at Frankie and Benny’s.

Tom King, James Meredith, Ben Thompson and Steve Morison rolled up their sleeves and mucked in to take orders and serve food and drinks to customers at the restaurant in Surrey Quays Leisure Park last Thursday.

The restaurant was packed full of families enjoying the half-term school holiday and youngsters

dressed in Millwall strips throughout the afternoon from 2pm to 4pm.

Excited young fans queued up to pose for photographs with the players and to have photographs and football shirts signed during the special appearance.

Road changes planned for Borough High Street

TRANSPORT BOSSES are proposing a number of changes to Borough High Street to ease congestion and help pedestrians.

A public consultation has revealed plans to make changes to the busy road at the junction with Marshalsea Road and Great Dover Street.

Transport for London says the proposed changes would reduce congestion and delays, especially for

the eight bus routes passing through the area, and make the road safer and easier for pedestrians.

At the Borough High Street north arm, TfL proposes to install a staggered signal-controlled pedestrian crossing, as well as a short section of bus lane on the northbound carriageway to connect with the existing bus lane to the north of the junction.

At the Marshalsea Road arm of the junction, the plans propose to ban the left turn from Marshalsea Road onto Borough High Street, and to install a

staggered controlled crossing for people walking on Borough High Street.

The proposals include modifying the existing traffic island and staggered crossing at this junction to improve its operation, while optimising traffic signal timings to increase the number of vehicles that can pass through the junction and give pedestrians enough time to cross.

At the Great Dover Street arm, the proposals include plans to realign and reduce the distance between the crossing points at the existing staggered

crossing to help pedestrians cross quicker.

A right turn only lane could be installed at this part of the junction and the existing traffic island narrowed to maximise the width of the new right turn lane. The kerb line at the junction with Borough High Street would also be modified to make it easier for larger vehicles to take the turning.

At the Borough High Street south arm the nearside lane would become left turn only except buses to allow buses to have priority on the approach to the

junction.

TfL also proposes to change the hours of operation of the northbound bus lane to 7am to 7pm Monday to Sunday to improve bus journey times.

Given a rocket over fireworks park closure BERMONDSEY

RESIDENTS ARE campaigning to have the borough’s annual fireworks display relocated, to prevent parts of Southwark Park from being shut off each year.

Parts of the south side of the park, where the running track, outdoor gym and CGP London art gallery are located, will be closed off to the public as part of Southwark Fireworks Night.

The event takes place on November 5, but areas will be closed off between 8am on November 3 and 5pm on November 7.

Residents say this is the longest amount of time the park has been partially closed for the event and that the public usually has access to more areas while it is shut off.

Valerie Hodson, secretary of Hawkstone tenants’ and residents’ association, told the News: “Years ago they used to just put a fence around the middle grass and we could use the other grass areas except from on the night of the event, which was fine, but last year they just closed the whole thing off.

“They are closing the park for five days and the event isn’t until the Sunday evening; in previous years they just

closed it off on the night of the fireworks from about 5pm.”

Residents have set up an online petition, calling for the fireworks event to either be relocated next year or cancelled.

“We want to see if they can at least look at using the other side of the park because

it’s used less,” said Ms Hodson.

“There’s Burgess Park and lots of other places – we aren’t saying don’t have a fireworks display, but there are other places.”

The council said access would remain open for those using the children’s playground, CGP London, Rotherhithe

Primary School, the running track (until 1pm on November 5), the park café, and Hawkstone Road car park (except for November 5).

Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council Cabinet Member for Business, Culture & Social Regeneration, said: “We apologise for any inconvenience,

but we do make every effort to minimise disruption, and each year we review our plans and try to accommodate as many of our local residents’ comments as possible.

“This year, we have responded to feedback by keeping the playground, running track and car park open, and by providing an area around the Hawkstone Gate for dog walkers.

“We are one of very few London boroughs still offering a free fireworks display for our residents.

“It is a lot safer for people to come to our amazing and extremely popular organised event, than to buy, store and set fireworks off around their homes.”

CAMPAIGNERS ARE calling on the public to join the fight for a tube station at Bricklayers Arms at a rally this Saturday.

The rally has been organised in a bid to persuade Transport for London to build a third tube station at the site as part of the Bakerloo Line extension.

Earlier this year, TfL consulted on plans to build two tube stations on the Old Kent Road and a 25 metre-high ventilation shaft at Bricklayers Arms as part of plans for the £3billion extension.

But the proposals came under fire from residents and businesses in the area who opposed the ventilation shaft and called for a tube station instead.

Suhel Ahmed, who owns Tower Tandoori restaurant on Tower Bridge Road, told the News a ventilation shaft would mean six to seven years of major works and disruption to the community “with nothing to show for it at the end”.

He also said the area desperately needed a “transport hub” to survive.

Former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Sir Simon Hughes said he was confident there would be speakers representing the Green, Liberal Democrat, Labour, and Conservative parties, as well as businesses in the area.

Matthew Yates, TfL’s head of transport planning and projects, previously told the News: “We did carefully consider the Bricklayers Arms

junction as a possible station location prior to the public consultation, but we decided it was not suitable as there was insufficient available land to allow for construction. It is also close to the existing Tube network.

“Following the results of the public consultation we will now carefully review our plans for the Bakerloo line extension, while continuing to liaise closely with the local community.”

Speaking to the News, the Labour MP said a viability report concluded the site was not big enough and that homes would have to be demolished to build a tube station.

“Southwark Labour backed the Bakerloo line extension from the word go,” he said.

“They got TfL to do the viability study which concluded that Bricklayers Arms is not viable because the site is too tight but people are being egged on to turn up [to the rally].

“The footprint would have to be expanded and that can’t happen without including existing homes; you are talking at least 1,000 homes to go in order to pay for higher buildings to accommodate the footprint that the new station would need.

“The land grab that would go with it to make it viable would be colossal.”

Mr Coyle said the proposals for two stations on Old Kent Road made more sense as there would be less disruption to the community.

transport spokesperson, said he was told by TfL at a meeting in July that no decision had been made regarding the sites for stations as part of the Bakerloo line extension.

“I have double checked with Caroline Pidgeon AM who co-chairs the mayor’s transport committee and she confirms that no recommendations have come forward and no sites have been ruled out,” he said.

“TfL have since advised that a further consultation will be undertaken in 2018 with a decision on alignment expected by mid-2018. TfL have discussed the possible engineering challenges the Bricklayers site may bring but when pushed, admitted that these are unknown and just concerns. The area they need is underground so no homes would be put at risk. I hope our MP sees that a tube station at Bricklayers would be so beneficial to so many local people in terms of travel time, congestion and air quality.”

Sir Simon Hughes added: “If you don’t fight hard for something, you won’t get it, and TfL have made clear they are considering the case for a tube station at the Bricklayers Arms.”

The News approached TfL for comment shortly before deadline but did not receive a response.

VAMPIRES, PUMPKINS and witches invaded Southwark Park for a spooky run in aid of a breast cancer charity.

Scores of runners donned their scariest fancy dress outfits and descended on the park for the third Trick or Treat Run London on Saturday (October 28).

The popular run was split into two, giving runners the option to enter either the Afternoon Spooky Run or the Evening Scare Run in the dark. The course featured several Halloweenthemed zones, along with a number of spooky surprises around the route, including a grave yard and witches.

Breast Cancer Care was again the official charity for the run, organised by Human Race Events.

A VICTORIAN primary school has had a complete makeover with new buildings as part of an £8million revamp.

Staff and children at Grange Primary School have celebrated the opening of a new building featuring a school hall, kitchen, nursery, library and office space.

The existing school building has also been completely renovated with learning satellite class-rooms and a designated early years playground.

The work has come as part of the council’s school expansion programme to create 3,000 additional school places across Southwark.

As of September 2018, Grange Primary School will have the space to welcome 60 children into its reception class.

Thanks to this expansion, the school has increased its capacity to now accommodate two classes in every teaching year.

Commenting on the completion of the buildings, co-headteacher Maddy Webb said: “I know I speak for the whole Grange community when I say that we are all thrilled with the work that has been done on the school and we wish to thank everyone involved for their commitment to improving opportunities for Southwark children.”

Diana Valcheva, also co-headteacher, added: “We are all thrilled that our children will be able to enjoy the exciting and stimulating learning environment they deserve.”

Councillor Victoria Mills, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for children and education, commented: “It is great to see another one of the schools that we have invested in as part of our expansion pro-gramme welcome children back into their renovated classrooms.

POLICE ARE appealing for help to trace a man and woman suspected of carrying a handgun onto a 12 bus between Camberwell and Peckham.

A “DECONTAMINATION tent” was set up at St Thomas’ Hospital’s A&E on Saturday after two people on a motorbike pelted pedestrians with powder from a fire extinguisher.

The two unknown culprits threw the previously-unknown substance over pedestrians in Walworth Grove Vale and Old Kent Road, between 6:30am and 8:30am.

Police told the News that three separate incidents were initially treated as potential chemical attacks, until it was later confirmed that that the material thrown at a number of pedestrians was “powder discharged from a fire extinguisher”.

One of the victims was a member of staff at the hospital. She was assessed and found not to have been injured.

A statement from the hospital said: “The substance was treated as a potentially hazardous material so we implemented our standard decontamination processes as a precaution.

“This included erecting a

decontamination tent and cordoning off the area where decontamination takes place to avoid cross contamination. The tent was taken down later that morning and the substance was found to be harmless.”

Police confirmed that no arrests were made.

At 5:40pm on August 8, a 21-year-old woman was travelling on the 12 bus, due to terminate at Dulwich Library.

The bus stopped at Camberwell Green, where the suspects got on with another man and a child.

The woman sat down next to the 21year-old, and the man sat in front of her.

The 21-year-old then became the victim of verbal abuse and threatening behaviour from the woman. Shortly afterwards, the man - who was seated in front - leaned over and placed a black handgun into the woman’s handbag, police say.

At approximately 6:25pm, the two suspects, the child and the other man all got off the bus in Peckham Rye. The male suspect is described as black, aged in his 30s, with short hair and a goatee beard. He had a tattoo on his neck and was wearing a white Tshirt, blue jeans and dark blue baseball

Stonework destroyed in Blitz recreated for park

A PAIR of stone plaques have been unveiled at a Rotherhithe park after the originals were destroyed during the Blitz.

The plaques, at the Lower Road entrance to King George’s Fields, show a lion and a unicorn, symbolising the royal coat of arms.

The Friends of Southwark Park applied for cleaner, greener, safer

funding to create replicas of the original stone plaques, which were destroyed during WWII. The plaques, made by Priest Stoneworks, were unveiled by former Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Kath Whittam.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for communities, leisure and safety, said: “These heraldic plaques are a fantastic way to bring Southwark’s history back to life and continue to ensure that these

green spaces are maintained for the public, now and in the future.”

The next round of cleaner, greener, safer ‘winners’ will be announced at community council meetings in January.

The programme gives residents an opportunity to apply for funding to transform their local area with projects ranging from the historic, like this one, to playgrounds, community gardens, and lighting improvements.

The gallery will continue to deliver its educational creative arts project in London’s children’s hospitals after securing funding from real estate company Delancey.

Now entering into its fifteenth year, the programme delivers 80 creative workshops a year, working with photographers, writers, and artists.

Over the last five years, the gallery has created free activity books for young

people in hospitals, specifically during the school holidays when hospital schools are closed.

The books are free and given exclusively to young people in hospital when the gallery is not delivering workshops, and during the school year.

Last year, the National Portrait Gallery gave 3,000 young people in four of London’s children’s hospitals a speciallycommissioned activity book of portraits and illustrations inspired by their favourite writers such as Roald Dahl, J.K. Rowling, Douglas Adams and Malorie Blackman.

The book, called My Magical Journeys, was launched at Evelina Hospital with a workshop given by one of the featured writers, poet John Hegley, and the book’s illustrator Lizzy Stewart.

‘OUR FLATS ARE PLAGUED BY LEAKS AND MOULD’ ROTHERHITHE

RESIDENTS IN Canada Water say they have been plagued by leaks and mould since moving into a newly-built housing development seven years ago.

Paolo Bassoli was among a number of residents who moved into Montreal House, in Surrey Quays Road, in 2010 after the development was built by Barratt Homes.

But just a year later, Mr Bassoli and some of his neighbours began to experience problems with leaks through their ceilings.

The water has led to mould growing on the walls in the flats and, despite Mr Bassoli replacing his ceiling twice and redecorating, the problem has persisted.

The 52-year-old said he contacted both his landlord – housing association Affinity Sutton – and Barratt but nothing has been done to fix the problem.

“I’m probably the one with the worst problems,” Mr Bassoli told the News.

“I’ve had the ceilings changed twice and then you’ve got people in your home creating dust and you have to clean afterwards and you have to take time off work and the problem keeps

coming back.

“We will decorate the flat ourselves and then two weeks later we’ve got the problem back again.

“It never really dries up and eventually it grows mould; it’s so close to the main electricity panel and sockets which is a concern as well.”

Mr Bassoli said there were people with respiratory problems, including himself, living in the damp conditions.

“Since I moved here I’ve had respiratory problems and have been diagnosed with COPD [chronic obstructive pulmonary disease],” he said.

“I can’t pinpoint that this is the cause but I didn’t have it when I moved in.

“We are concerned that it’s not healthy [the mould and damp conditions].”

Mr Bassoli said he and other

residents had “escalated” the problem to the National House-Building Council.

A spokesperson for Affinity Sutton said: “We are aware of the issues relating to damp reported to us by residents at Montreal House.

“Our surveyor is working with the freeholder and its property management agent who is responsible for the apartments above our

residents’ homes in order to help identify the source and to get the matter resolved ASAP.” A Barratt Developments spokesperson added: “The only issue reported to us at Montreal House was a leak earlier this year.

“This was fixed, however it seems that it has reoccurred so we are now working hard with Affinity Sutton and the managing agent to resolve it.”

In 1921, the year the Royal British Legion was formed, ‘Armistice Day’ was formally adopted as the national day of remembrance.The two minute silence is held at 11am on 11 November, when the nation pauses to honour those who gave their lives in conflicts past and present.

The Royal British Legion is the national custodian of remembrance, a role which ensures that those who gave their lives for peace and freedom are duly remembered. Lord Harris pens book about his childhood and success

THE CARPETRIGHT millionaire and Harris Academy founder Phil Harris published his autobiography this month, sharing the story of his Peckham childhood and rise as one of Britain’s most successful businessmen.

Despite leaving school with just one Olevel and struggling to read and write, Harris went from his father’s market stall on Rye Lane to building a business empire. He was made a life-peer in the House of Lords in 1996.

Although officially known as Lord Harris of Peckham, Harris still goes by Phil and continues to feel a close affinity to his childhood home, crediting his success to his early life in Southwark.

Much of Harris’ time is now dedicated to improving education in struggling schools. His chain of Harris Academies includes schools in Peckham, Bermondsey and East Dulwich.

This month, he published Magic Carpet Ride: The Story of my Life, cowritten with Ivan Fallon. Speaking to the News, Lord Harris said: “Growing up in Peckham was one the best times of my life.

“I remember the war, vaguely. I was only about three at the time and remember being carried down, scared, to an air raid shelter.

“What I liked about Peckham was that everyone was friendly, and Christmas especially was a lovely time. When I was growing up, I couldn’t compare it to other parts of the UK. I didn’t know that it was a poor area.”

In Magic Carpet Ride, he reminisces about the working class characters and Peckham landmarks he knew well.

Philip Harris was born on September, 15 1942 in St Albans, where his pregnant mother was sent to avoid the Blitz.

He spent the first seven years of his life in a Victorian terrace on Grenard Road, in Peckham. The family had lived in Southwark since the 1800s. His father, Charles, was born in Camberwell, and his grandfather hailed from nearby Newington.

His mother, Ruth Ward, grew up on Blake’s Road. Her father, a rag and bone man, was quite the character: “Sometimes he went on benders, getting so drunk he forgot where he’d left his horse.”

But in particular he remembers a strong sense of community.

“I remember my dad and mum going

to a Salvation Army club near our Harris Academy today. It was near Peckham Fire Station and a place called Kennedy’s that sold sausage rolls.

“The club was in the basement next door and we went parties once every few weeks. I used to love the Christmas parties at Peckham Town Hall. My nan would take me to Walworth Road to buy chestnuts.

“Little things, like the trough for horses on Blakes Road near Southampton Row, and going to get sarsaparilla drinks by the Walworth Road, stay in my mind.”

Was he always an entrepreneur?

“Aged four, I sold holly and mistletoe at the Half Moon pub in Herne Hill at Christmas for sixpence a bunch,” he laughs.

Harris grew up plying his trade with his father, a war hero who became a professional lightweight boxer after being demobbed. Charles Harris fought in south London and the East End, eventually saving up enough winnings to open a lino stall in Rye Lane market.

By the 1950s the family had moved to Thornton Heath and had opened two shops, one on Peckham High Street and another in Penge.

Harris had no idea that his father was awarded the Military Cross for ‘exemplary gallantry’ until after his untimely death from stomach cancer at 39.

In Magic Carpet Ride, he reveals that Charles served in Germany at the end of the war and helped combat a German counter-attack in the town of Wildeshausen in 1945.

He writes: “Charlie jumped to his feet and, shouting for the troops to follow, he leapt forward shooting from the hip.

“The Germans were overrun and the survivors retreated through the backstreets, followed hotly by British troops. After a thorough search of the area, Charlie reported back that it was clear of the enemy.”

After his father’s death, the Sixteenyear-old Harris left schooling and took on the ailing family business.

How did he turn things around?

“In the evenings I used to catch buses and go round to other shops from Peckham to Penge. I learnt what other businesses were doing. That’s where my success started.”

By 1993, Harris’ Carpetright business had 100 shops across the UK and was valued £114 million on the London Stock Exchange.

overnight, or easily.

In Magic Carpet Ride he explains: “I’ve never read a book, I can’t write a letter and I can barely read a speech.

“But I can read a balance sheet, dictate letters, and if I’ve got to give a speech I can do it.

“Dyslexics have a way of finding creative ways around their difficulty.”

This experience was channelled into a life-long commitment to help others benefit from education.

In 1989 he was approached by Margaret Thatcher to sponsor the failing Sylvan Grove comprehensive in Crystal Palace.

Five years later the pass rate for GCSEs went from 5% to 57% and the school became a blueprint for the chain of Harris Schools he set up in London.

The school’s model later inspired the academy school system rolled-out by the government. Today the Harris Federation runs 44 state academy schools, mostly in south London.

Harris, who lives in Kent with his wife Pauline, visits regularly and is proud to take a hands-on approach.

“I spend a day and a half a week visiting our schools across the country. I do like meeting the kids in Peckham.

I’ve always treated Peckham as my

home.

“We’ve got six schools in the area and I just think it’s a great place. I’m so glad it’s getting back to what it used to be like.”

“One in 44 children in London go to our schools. They may have six or seven jobs but they only get one chance in life to go to school.”

John Major, who wrote the forward to Harris’ autobiography, predicts: “In fifty years’ time, there will be many successful – even eminent – men and women, who will owe their success to the education that Phil Harris made possible for them.”

How did a retailer with a less than distinguished academic record prove so successful in education?

“I think with anything, including running schools, hospitals, businesses, you need motivation and to be able to get on with other people.

“Whatever skills you’ve got, it’s about motivating people to get the best out of them.”

A particular passion is encouraging dyslexic children to aim high.

“The one thing I do when I meet dyslexic children is tell them I am dyslexic and I’m not ashamed of it.

“In my days people thought you were

backward but now we teach dyslexic children foreign languages.

“People just needed to realise that dyslexic kids need a bit of extra help and then they can get over their difficulties and succeed.”

At 75 years of age, Harris is as driven as ever and still has ambitions for Peckham.

“I’d like to take over any failing school in the area and would love to get some of the lovely old buildings cleaned up to what they were like 60, 70 years ago.

“I’d like to see more clubs for kids, too.

We need all the run-down clubs and centres done up.”

Lord Harris explained why he decided to write his book: “It was not so much to give my history, but to motivate children from poor areas that they can be successful and, hopefully, if they are successful, to encourage them to give some money back to society.”

As he writes in Magic Carpet Ride: “Although I was born in the middle of a world war and grew up in a time of austerity and rationing, I wouldn’t change anything about my life.”

A BERMONDSEY art tutor has been nominated for an accolade at the first Black British Entertainment Awards.

Eugene Ankomah, who has worked as an art tutor at Salmon Youth Centre, in Old Jamaica Road, for the past nine years, has been nominated for the Best Creative Artist award.

The awards, which will be held for the first time next month, celebrate the best of black British talent in the entertainment industry in categories including film, TV, music, fashion and social media.

Eugene, who also works as a professional artist, told the News: “It is quite incredible because first of all it is an entertainment award so I wasn’t expecting art to be featured but now I can see why they considered me for it because although I do the traditional art, I’m also a performance artist.

“It’s an incredible honour and I feel I’m helping to blur the lines between your traditional artists and in a sense new media because as a performance artist I tend to use my image as part of it but also use video and audio.”

The 38-year-old was also recognised for his contribution to art at a BEFFTA (Black Entertainment Film Fashion Television and Arts) Awards event on Friday, October 27. The artist said he originally got involved with Salmon Youth Centre because he wanted to mentor other people. “When I was at school doing my

Camberwell woman with secondary breast cancer calls for more research

A CAMBERWELL woman who may only have two years to live is raising awareness of secondary breast cancer, and why the unexpectedly common killer needs more research funding.

Charlotte Hainsworth, 39, has lived in East Dulwich, Peckham and Camberwell for the last five years.

Since her twenties, Charlie has lived the high-pressure life of a propertylaw solicitor, often putting in fourteenhour shifts at her firm’s London Bridge office.

But it all changed in March this year, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer.

“I went to the GP,” Charlie told the News, “because one breast just felt slightly firmer than the other, which probably sounds like some people’s wish.

“They couldn’t feel anything, but said they would refer me just to be on the safe side. Then I came back positive.”

At first she was given reassuring predictions from her oncologist at Guy’s Hospital that she would likely be in remission within a year.

That initial shock was followed two weeks later with the news that her diagnosis was already at a very late stage. Charlie was then given the secondary diagnosis: meaning her cancer had already spread from the primary tumour in her breast, to two sections of vertebrae in her spine.

Charlie said: “I had no idea what secondary cancer was. I had no idea it could spread. And once it has spread, it’s classed as incurable.

“I did ask them how long I have to live. I felt I wanted to ask, but I wanted to ask on my own. You worry so much about people being upset. As well as processing it yourself, you have to think about how everyone else feels.

“So I went on my own and they told me I’ve got a form of cancer that’s rarer and more aggressive. It’s called ‘triple negative’. It’s called that because they don’t know what it is, they only know three things that it isn’t. I’ve got the worst kind.

“Twenty-four months from diagnosis is what they told me. That’s an average, assuming some people have lived less long, other have lived for longer.”

Charlie is all too aware that the treatments she will be given can only extend her life. But so far the treatments have been effective.

“I was given chemo really quickly – within about two weeks of the secondary diagnosis. And I’ve had more chemo which has worked really well for me,” she said.

Raising awareness of the disease

Charlie came to News with her story feeling spurred on by Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and her realisation about the lack of public awareness of secondary breast cancer.

“There’s not enough care for people with secondary breast cancer. And all the news and stories you hear are about primary breast cancer. We’re the forgotten group of people in the club that no one knows about,” Charlie said.

“Everyone who dies of breast cancer dies from secondary breast cancer.

And yet when it comes to research funding, it’s a ridiculously small “The tumour [in her breast] was the size of a grape fruit. The chemo was to shrink it and take it out. I’ve also had chemo to shrink the tumours in my bones, which has helped them.

Next I’ll have radiotherapy, after that I will have more chemotherapy to stop it spreading for as long as possible.

“My team were good at giving as much or as little information as I wanted. At first I was in shock and didn’t want to know.

“When I’d got a chance to process it, I went back to the oncologist and learnt more. And now I know more, I feel I’m participating in it, rather than just being told what to do.”

She adds: “I’m quite a positive person anyway… It could always be worse.

“It’s a massive cliché but things like this really do make you realise there are much more important things in life.”

CHARLIE HAS put her naturally positive outlook into ideas to make a practical difference.

She completed a five-mile walk with friends in July while I was in the middle of chemo. “It was really hard.

I had nose bleeds and I was being sick, but we raised a couple of

Yet we’re the ones who will die from it. And that’s extremely imbalanced to me. That’s the big thing I want to raise awareness of.

“And a lot of people who get breast cancer aren’t made aware that secondary cancer is likely. One in three people are later diagnosed with secondary cancer, and most people aren’t made aware of that.”

PATIENTS AT Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals will receive an extra helping of donated clothes this Christmas, thanks to a Bermondsey storage firm’s charity drive.

Access Self Storage in SE1 asked the News to nominate a beneficiary of their 2017 Christmas Charity Appeal, and we chose the two local hospitals.

Now the firm is challenging locals to get on board and donate old clothes. All donations of clothes should be handed in at the firm’s reception in 61 Willow Walk, by December 15.

Emma Simpson from the two hospitals’ fundraising team said: “Being in hospital can be stressful and upsetting, no matter how good the care you receive.

“But imagine not being able to afford to meet your most basic of needs, such as clothes to wear when you go home. Sometimes, patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’ sadly find themselves in this situation, and this is where support from the local community can be invaluable.

THE BOROUGH’S three MPs were quizzed by a gathering of Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group (SPAG) members in Westminster Palace last week.

Midwife clocks up 32 years without one day off sick A COMMUNITY midwife who retired after 32 years without a day off sick has put her perfect record down to the joy of witnessing hundreds of births and healthy eating.

Christine Goh, who began her midwifery career at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1985 and was based at Gracefield Gardens Health Centre in Streatham, says she has enjoyed supporting women at every stage of their pregnancy including giving birth at home.

Christine, who runs a regular antenatal clinic at Gracefield Gardens, says: “When you deliver a healthy baby it’s so rewarding.

It’s great to see the mother and her new baby and the joy it brings

to the whole family. For me, every birth is wonderful, every birth is unique. It’s a happy place to be.”

She continues: “Sometimes when I visit a new mum at home and I meet the grandmother, they say, ‘Don’t you remember that you delivered my daughter all those years ago, now she’s a new mum.’ It’s lovely that they remember me and are so appreciative.”

Angela Ugen, Midwifery matron for Community Services, says: “Christine is a dedicated and inspirational midwife who has been there for so many women at one of the most important times of their life. Congratulations on her achievement.”

Patient transport crew bring TLC to dementia patients Christine Goh

DEMENTIA PATIENTS are among those receiving extra support from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Patient Transport ambulance crews when they visit our hospitals.

Patients identified by nursing teams as being at risk, including the frail, older people and vulnerable people without the support of a carer, are looked after by a two-person Patient Transport ambulance crew throughout their hospital visit. On arrival to hospital their care is transferred to ward staff.

The crews ensure that patients are never left alone throughout their journey, that the patient’s home is left safe, appliances are switched off and the property is secured. They also make sure that patients have their medication with them when returning home from hospital.

Ian Coshall, a patient transport driver at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “I’ve been trained to deal with patients sympathetically and to recognise the signs of dementia. But in truth we get most of our training on the job. I talk to patients and reassure them along

the journey, maybe pointing out a particular landmark like a church or fire station, that will refresh their memory.

“I treat them like family, how I would like to be treated myself.”

Patient Transport crews are trained to recognise vulnerable patients, undertaking a safeguarding course and watching Barbara’s Story – an innovative training film produced

by Guy’s and St Thomas’ about a dementia patient’s hospital experience.

The initiative is part of the Trust’s Always include me programme which raises awareness of the support needed for carers and for vulnerable patients. Other developments include a new-look Carer’s Passport which enables carers to be more involved in the general care of their loved one.

This could mean everything from supporting patients at mealtimes to flexible visiting arrangements and an overnight stay.

Patients rate their emergency care The Emergency Department at St Thomas’

FINDINGS FROM a survey of more than 45,000 people who used urgent and emergency services provided by 137 NHS trusts in England show positive results for many aspects of care and treatment.

Published on Tuesday 17 October by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the survey reveals the responses of patients who attended A&E departments run directly by an acute hospital trust during September 2016.

The patient experience survey found that Guy’s and St Thomas’ is performing as well as other trusts overall. Areas where we are performing particularly well include: • Feeling safe in the department • Privacy when being examined or treated • Staff explaining test results in a clear way.

Areas for improvement include waiting times, emotional support, and communication when leaving the department.

Dame Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Executive, said: “Our Emergency Department continues to deliver excellent patient care in the face of a sustained increase in demand for our services. This has led to an increase in waiting times which we are determined to address.”

At this time of year, you can also

get your annual flu vaccination from your pharmacy. Washing your hands with soap and water and teaching your children to do the same can help stop you catching and spreading infections.

To help you stay healthy over the winter, now’s the time to check your medicine cabinet. The NHS recommends that everyone keeps a well-stocked medicine cabinet at home, which should contain the following: • Painkillers, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen • Antihistamine for allergies • Bandages • Rub-on anti-inflammatory

Protect yourself from malaria if you are going overseas IF YOU are planning to visit a country where malaria is found, you should seek advice about protecting yourself from infection four to six weeks before you go.

Malaria can be very serious and is found in many African countries, as well as Southern Asia, Central America, and South America.

You will not be immune to malaria if you have previously visited or lived in the country you plan to visit. You need to protect yourself every time you visit a country where there is malaria. If you get ill while you are away, get medical advice straight away. It is important that malaria is diagnosed and treated as soon as possible.

There is no vaccination against malaria, so it's very important to take anti-malarial medicines. These reduce your risk of getting malaria by about 90%. They should be taken before you travel, while you are away and for up to four weeks after you come back.

There are many different types of anti-malarial medicines. In Southwark, they are available either over the counter from a pharmacist or through private prescription from a GP. GPs do not give anti-malarial medicines on NHS prescription. Your GP will advise

you on what anti-malarial medicine would be best for you and what the side effects may be, and they can give you a private prescription if required, so you can get your medicines from a high street pharmacy.

The NHS recommends that you get your medicines in the UK before you travel, as medicines abroad may be fake or sub-standard.

You can also protect yourself from malaria by preventing mosquito bites.

Sleep under a mosquito net, use insect repellent on your skin and wear long trousers and sleeves to keep yourself covered, particularly during early evening and at night.

Mayor Khan has released plans for a protected cycle-lane from Tower Bridge, along Jamaica Road to Deptford. It includes measures for safer walking. 72 people walking or cycling are hurt in collisions every year on this route! 3,500 people are already cycling along it with no space or protection currently.

Khan’s proposal will: * Provide safer cycling route to schools for local kids. * Enable more residents cycle safer to work. * Finally allocate road space for the 81% of Southwark residents who do not own a car. * Reduce need for polluting mini or black cabs, which make up 60% of cartraffic in cczone. * Help tackle Southwark kids’ obesity crisis. * Help Southwark’s 66% of adults who fail to take even 20 minutes exercise a day. * Will reduce Southwark’s carbon emissions, which threaten to flood all of the borough’s north. * Protect pedestrians from pavement mounting car-crashes. * Help many local businesses, as more people will walk and cycle to them, when area is safer. * Reduce pollution breathed by kids walking on adjacent pavement, due to being farther from exhaust pipes.

Nearly all parks and schools used by kids in north of borough break EU pollution safety levels.

Rotherhithe doctors wrote to TfL backing the cycle-highway due to their patients’ car-pollution and inactivity diseases. Southwark has almost the highest rate of obese people in the UK. 56% of adults and 43% of children classified as overweight.

We need urgent solutions to these health and environmental crises plaguing us. For too long local politicians blocked all protected cyclelanes. It is good to finally see some supporting them.

That cap has now been officially abandoned, which means the scandal of huge care bills wiping out the hard-earned assets and savings of thousands of pensioners will continue unabated.

Ministers say a wide range of options is still being considered but, after years of broken promises, who can possibly believe they will find a solution anytime soon.

Because they didn’t have the political courage to tackle the problem, first Labour then the Coalition, kicked it into the long grass; now a Tory government has done the same.

Join in the tube camapign

LOCAL AND London-wide Liberal Democrats are supporting a campaign to have a tube station at the Bricklayers’ Arms.

Transport for London’s current plans to extend the Bakerloo Line look set to include building a ventilation shaft at the large roundabout, at an estimated cost of £70m. This would actually be the bulk of the cost of building a tube station at Bricklayers’ Arms.

Local campaigners, business groups, community organisations as well as thousands of local residents have already signed a

petition calling on Transport for London to amend their plans to have a new station there rather than just a shaft to release hot air.

TfL have said that they are considering the plans and have yet to finalise their decision.

A campaign rally to push the cause is being held at the Bricklayers’ Arms roundabout at 11:45 on Saturday the 4th of November, and local Liberal Democrats are urging all those keen for a new station to be built to join in the all-party no-party event.

Crisis facing young over mental health

RESPONDING TO a review of children and young people’s mental health services by the Care Quality Commission.

This report highlights the urgency with which we need to tackle the crisis facing children and young people’s mental health, and its findings are further evidence that children are not getting the treatment they need, when they need it. It reveals the fragmentation, complexity and variation of a service that investment alone cannot solve.

At the moment we have a mental health system that still says no rather than yes to children when they ask for help with problems such as depression, anxiety, family issues and bereavement.

Councils, which play a critical role in improving the lives of all residents, want the Government’s green paper on children’s mental health to deliver the root and branch reform it so desperately needs.

Mental health must be put on the same footing as physical health.

Greater investment is needed in community-based preventive services, such as counselling in

schools, which gives children and young people the support they need and keeps them out of hospital in the first place.

We cannot continue with a system that is leaving thousands of children and families in distress, causing lifelong damage and preventing them from reaching their true potential.

Over £1million raised by cup cakes

IN JUNE, more than 23,000 people dusted off their baking bowls and whipped out their whisks to unite against dementia for Alzheimer’s Society’s Cupcake Day.

I’m delighted to say we’ve already raised more than £1million and that figure continues to grow by the day. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the families, friends and colleagues who baked and bought cupcakes to raise awareness of dementia and bring together communities to support people living with the condition.

Over 1,700 people in Southwark are estimated to be living with dementia and 850,000 are affected UK-wide.

Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer and could affect us all. Every pound raised through Cupcake Day will help Alzheimer’s Society provide vital information and support, campaign for improved care, fund research and create lasting change for people affected by the condition.

Seasoned traders running family businesses work side by side with spirited young entrepreneurs just starting out. The stalls are a sea of colours and a treat for the senses, brimming with brightly hued fruits and vegetables; fresh meat and fish, and exotic herbs and spices. As you take in this land of plenty, some might find it hard to comprehend that, for too many living in close proximity, there is a very different reality.

If you take a short trip down the road to Peckham, you come to an alternative emblem of contemporary South-East London - the Pecan foodbank. The centre, which saw a 33 per cent increase in referrals between April and July this year, does vital work providing food aid to local people in crisis. Alarmingly, the foodbank reports that 94 per cent of those referrals came as a direct result of benefit changes. While it is heartening to see the generosity and goodwill which keeps this place going, that its existence is necessary, in one of the richest cities on the planet, is shameful.

As the London rollout of Universal Credit progresses, welfare charities have raised grave concerns that food poverty is set to spiral further. This change to benefits, which means claimants will receive a single monthly payment rather than several, has been touted by ministers as a mechanism to streamline the system.

Yet the process has been plagued by administrative errors, with lengthy waiting times plunging people into debt and financial hardship.

Almost 60 per cent of the 2.3 million Londoners living in poverty are in working families – the highest proportion since records began. For the privileged, the capital is awash with opportunity. For others, just making ends meet is impossible - this is a modern-day tale of two London’s.

Last week I raised the impact the government’s welfare policies are having on foodbank usage with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan. The Mayor plans to publish a food strategy for London early next year but this needs to be accompanied by urgent action from central government.

Ensuring that everyone in our society can afford to eat is not a luxury, it is basic humanity. I encourage senior politicians, including government ministers, to visit their local foodbanks to see for themselves the effect their policies are having on some of our most vulnerable people. Food poverty is a stain on our national consciousness and it must not be tolerated for a moment longer.

The Unimaginable

I

t was great to be back at the Union Theatre and to see the bar buzzing with a Friday night crowd. As a fan of their productions, I was pleased to see the place full and thriving, writes Katie Kelly...

The bar did provide an unintentional comic twist in the first half of the show, when a group of actors, in character as Jewish rebels from the 1st Century BC exited straight into it with the resulting moment of culture clash before the door closed behind them.

The musical is advertised as a show set in the Warsaw ghetto, in the shadow of the Final Solution and full of humour and optimism. A tall order you might think. Yet it is exactly that.

A small band of actors, struggling against starvation and oppression, seek to keep hope alive through music and imagination. With Union Theatre trademarks of copious theatrical smoke and great vocal performances, a complicated play within a play unfolds. The Warshowsky players stage a production about the Jewish rebellion at Masada, under the watchful eye of a Nazi commander.

The choice of a play about a Jewish resistance to occupying forces is courageous under the circumstances, though their director Daniel points out that the Nazis should be happy as all the Jews die in the end.

with minimal resistance, they have a very difficult decision to make. Carry on and receive the reward of sanctuary in Zurich or warn their compatriots of the truth about the camp?

The play manages to be entirely uncynical and did contain a couple of powerful moments. It was hard not to think of the Weinstein scandal when a captive Salome is being instructed to dance seductively for the powerful Caesar and guests before being handed to General Silva, as a prize.

There is a small scene between two prisoners who are sentenced to death, praying together as Jew and Christian, with unity and humour, which was surprisingly touching. The play was undermined by the fact that the plot hinges on a ludicrously improbable love story between a Jewish girl and Roman General. Nothing about it rang true and I found their duets tedious despite strong vocals and good acting. The writing just did not convince me. I could imagine a theatre group finding value in art, even in the midst of horror, but as for true love being found between General Silva and Rebecca in a ten second encounter, I’m afraid that with the best will in the world, I couldn’t imagine that.

Railways and carnage in South London Theatre resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses (and the rum flows) tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters.

Celebrated children’s author Edith Nesbit (The Railway Children, Five Children & It) retreats to her attic writing room with her housekeeper and an unexpected, handsome guest, during one of her husband’s tiresome parties, in Philip Meek’s Edith In The Dark. a reading of her work. Not one of her cherished children’s tales, but her terrifying early horror stories. As the stories unfold it becomes clear all is not what it seems… someone in the attic is hiding a deadly secret.

Kops chase, many opening and closing of doors, windows and wardrobes, and before long the one-liners came and came and came in this rollicking romp of a show, that also included the added bonus of a comic cameo from Charles Darwin in the British Museum library!

Yet, and most importantly, beneath all the frivolity, there was a message to remind us of the desperate and the downtrodden. When Marx, in a rare moment of sobriety, considered his life of living off the generosity of others, ’brutalised’, his friend and patron, Friedrich Engels, told him, sternly and squarely, that he had not seen the true misery and inhumanity that he had witnessed in the cotton mills and textile factories of Manchester, never mind lived it. In a speech that quelled any laughter in the audience for quite some time, we all inwardly came to terms with how wretched life was for many - and

not that long ago.

This, though, is the only real nod towards to the Karl Marx that we think we know, because Young Marx has us laughing at his drunkenness, his living beyond available means and his adultery, and perhaps that is okay because we know, from our position 160 years on, what his achievements eventually were.

And because maybe comedy is one way to get people thinking about his ideas again. Personally, I was more interested in Engels and the strange double life he led, but Young Marx is a play worth seeing to get the other side of Karl Marx.

The leather seats are comfortable and not built for thin, malnourished Victorians riddled with rickets. They allow more leg room than one is used to elsewhere; the auditorium is raked so that there is no chance of someone blocking your view of the stage, and on press night they provided scrumptious chocolate brownies at the interval.

The first play in this theatre is Richard Bean and Clive Coleman’s Young Marx, a lively comedy about Karl Marx, who I thought would be a serious man and not a fellow for laughter and jokes. In fact, I found it hard to believe that any of this revolutionary ribaldry was true until I read the programme notes. This political panto, this manifesto of mirth, this farce of theoretical fervour charts some of the 33 years the young Karl Marx spent in London, in Soho and mainly in abject poverty while he was writing Das Kapital and getting drunk.

The scene was set in London almost immediately with fake fog and a Cockney pawnbroker asking if he could ‘have a butcher’s’ at an item brought into his shop. Soon there was a Keystone

ramatic music adding a dramatic backdrop to dramatic set changes was just one aspect of the evening.

David Yelland and Philip Franks dramatically eating up the stage as rival lawyers in Agatha Christie’s acclaimed courtroom drama, Witness For The Prosecution, was another.

But the real star of this show was The Chamber in County Hall, scene of many political battles for most of the 20th century and now a battleground once more, writes Michael Holland.

The oak panelling, leather seats and huge doors - still with Ayes and

LEWISHAM CHORAL Society presents Sounds Imperial, a regal extravaganza of music by Haydn and Mozart, two composers inextricably linked with the imperial court of the Holy Roman Empire, of which their Austrian homeland was a part.

One can see why Mozart’s majestic Coronation Mass, with its glorious music for choir and soloists, was a favourite of the Viennese court. The court later commissioned Haydn’s rousing Te Deum in C for the Emperor’s wife, Maria Theresa. The fiery opening of Haydn’s delightful motet Insanae et vanae curae, describing man’s ‘vain and raging cares,’ contrasts with its lyrical conclusion urging us to trust in God. And following his magnificent performance of the Elvira Madigan concerto last year, pianist Nico de Villiers returns to play the darker tones of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No 20.

The choir is accompanied by Forest Philharmonic Orchestra, one of London’s foremost community orchestras, under the baton of accomplished conductor Dan Ludford –Thomas. A crowning achievement all round!

Noes signs above them - made the auditorium more like a mini House of Lords than the Old Bailey, which is where Christie placed her combatants. A stern-faced judge, his silent clerks and a jury made up of audience members completed the setting. All it needed now was the defendant and his accusers. And it was one of the accusers that was the surprise element in this play - a witness for the prosecution.

We’ve all grown up with Agatha Christie so know how important it is to watch out for clues, and then to sift the red herrings from the real deal. The housekeeper looked like a likely suspect for murdering the rich Emily French; the defendant’s

wife also seemed a tad dodgy under interrogation, and the defendant himself didn’t do himself any favours, but it is the melodramatic last few minutes of a Christie work where all is revealed after the sudden unforeseen twists and turns.

In that respect there are no shocks.

We know what to expect and Agatha Christie supplies that demand.

A treasure trove of Tove

T

his first major retrospective of Tove Jansson’s work in the UK is full of surprises. Famed for creating the Moomin characters and books this exhibition shows that she was a wonderful artist, was sought out as an illustrator of books, had an uncanny talent for dry humour and satire, and was an amazing storyteller, creating tales for all ages, writes Michael Holland.

Born to a graphic artist mother and sculptor father, Tove grew up surrounded by art and when still a teenager she went off to study art in Stockholm, followed by further courses in Finland and Paris, and was contributing to political satire magazine, Garm, in her twenties, depicting Hitler as a petulant child wanting everything and anything, much to the annoyance of the Finnish government who had sided with Germany. She went on to create a hundred cover images for Garm.

In a country ravaged by war and a family divided, life was not easy.

Even forging a career in the art world as a woman meant standing up against the system, and this bold, in-your-face attitude can be seen in a series of self-portraits where she painted herself as defiant and challenging.

Besides working as a graphic artist she developed the Moomins during the war years, bringing together her gift as an artist and her storytelling skills.

Her early artwork has a mystical, fairytalelike style so she was considered perfect to illustrate Swedish versions of The Hobbit, Alice in Wonderland and The Hunting of The Snark. In the 50s London’s Evening Standard commissioned her Moomin comic strips for adults which were a regular feature up into the 1970s.

Through 150 drawings and paintings, many of which have never been seen before, the exhibition shows how Jansson’s work and style developed with time; how she compartmentalised the different aspects of her work, and how she never let being a woman hold her back.

ANOTHER AREA of Bermondsey sees the seeds of regeneration blossoming with the opening of an Italian deli and pizzeria. The smell of new, fresh wood hits you as you enter Pizza Room, and it is from the shiny, new floor and furniture in this double shop that has only been open for three weeks. On one side is a bright, colourful deli selling all things delicious, and the other a dining area, writes Michael Holland...

As myself and my partner for the evening, Wendy, sat down we noticed envelopes on the tables ‘From Pamela and Daniele Tironi’. Inside was a

sweet welcoming letter introducing the couple and laying out their mission plan, plus three loyalty cards for ice cream, coffee and pizza. We read that they will sell artisan bread and have traditional sweets made in their own bakery that will also come in gluten-free and vegan varieties.

Benedetta, the manager, was keen for us to try some of the vegetarian offerings and we were keen for her to choose for us. But first some Italian wine. ‘Benny’ brought a glass of Pinot Grigio that was quite lively and frivolous, and had a sparkling aspect to it; and a rather robust Montepulciano that was quite beautiful in body and taste. ‘Hmm,’

said Wendy as she grabbed the red and wouldn’t let go. ‘This is nice, innit, Mick?’

A selection of starters were laid before us: Mediterranean Olives, Bread and Balsamico Dip, Tomato and Onions and a Rocket and Pecorino Salad. All were fresh, looked fresh and tasted fresh. The sourdough bread was exceptionally nice, as were the light dressings on the salads.

Pizza Room gives the impression of being spacious, the light walls making it bright and welcoming.

Interesting artworks add to the pleasing nature of its interior, as do the smiling faces seen through the hatch into the kitchen.

Benny asked us to try their draught lager, Poretti, a thirst-quenching beer that seems to have a name made up from Peroni and Moretti , both of which they sell in bottles. I liked it but before I could try another one two more glasses of wine appeared. The red was a fruity Nero d’Avola from Sicily that Wendy seemed keen on, while I fell in love with the Vermentino, a smooth, full of flavour white.

While we enjoyed the wines and discussed our respective Christmas plans two large pizzas landed. One, Summer, was topped with Mozzarella, a very tomatoey sauce and three different salamis. It was good. In fact, very good, the meats all adding something different, and

the cheese, sauce and thin base ratio all working perfectly as one.

I, though, preferred the Vegan Veggie pizza. Again it had the flavoursome tomato sauce made to Pizza Room’s secret recipe, plus a dense layer of chopped vegetables. I liked it more because it was not one that I would choose myself, and I thank Benedetta for having me try it.

Wendy and I both agreed that we could quite easily leave meat out of our diets.

To my amazement my dining companion had never had Tiramisu so I convinced her she must try. In Pizza Room they leave out the alcohol so that all the family can have tiramisu, which is a good thing. Wendy loved it so much I had to demand my share.

Benedetta was eager for me to taste the vegan ice cream, a must for restaurants these days where everyone seems to have an intolerance to one thing or another.

She gave me the chocolate variety that was absolutely bursting with flavour but, for me, did not have the defining quality of real gelato. It was good for those that need to keep lactose-free but not good enough for those that can deal with the full fat loveliness of Italian ice cream.

then it came down to 60 and then to 55.

“We’re now on to our third set of buildings; we had a Georgian site, a Victorian site, and a site opened in the 1970s.”

Southwark Charities manages the

parish charities of Christ Church and St Mary, in Newington, today.

There is an almshouse in each parish currently housing 77 elderly men and women who pay a contribution of £25 a week to live in a one-bedroom flat.

“We’ve got a waiting list; the demand has never gone away and people still need the accommodation that we offer,” said Mr Wilson.

“Currently, we have about 64 accommodation units across two buildings and we’re looking to

The Edward Edwards’ Charity was established under a deed of gift by Edward Edwards, a parishioner of Christ Church, in Blackfriars, on November 2, 1717.

Edwards, who lived in Marigold Alley, in Blackfriars, finished his stonemason apprenticeship in 1687, and his working life coincided with the major rebuilding of London after the Great Fire of 1666.

When he died, he left his property to be used for building and maintaining almshouses to provide shelter for “poor decayed housekeepers and widows”.

He specified they would be for people living in Christ Church parish originally and for women only.

Edwards’ motive behind donating his property has never been unearthed, and even his wife was unaware of his intentions until he died.

“In terms of what his motivation was, we really don’t know,” said Chris Wilson, clerk to Southwark Charities’ trustees, who has written a book documenting the charity’s history.

“It’s a shame because there were other founders of almshouses who declared their reason for donating their land to almshouses.

“John Walter said it was terrible that people were dying of exposure because they had nowhere to live so he wanted to found almshouses and places where he lived. Founders often founded them for people of their own crafts.

“The interesting thing is he was married and we believe he had no children but instead of leaving his estate to his wife, he left it to the trustees and she was so upset by that she actually took the trustees to court.”

The group of trustees Edwards appointed saved up the rents from his properties and bought land in 1752.

“The first almshouse was built in 1753 but there was then a delay due to Blackfriars Road being laid out as they actually had to buy some of Edwards’ estate to lay it out,” said Mr Wilson.

Blackfriars Bridge was opened in 1769 followed by Blackfriars Road in about 1771, and the charity continued to build more almshouses from 1774 up to 1794.

“Edwards didn’t specify an age limit [for people to live in the almshouses] but in the words that he used he implied aged,” said Mr Wilson.

“In 1890 it became more formalised and you had to be 65 and

nearly double that within the next five years.”

The charity will celebrate its 300th birthday today with a visit from Princess Anne, who formally opened the Edwards Edwards’ House on May 31, 1973.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable Highway works to be carried out, it intends to make an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: Redcross Way (North) Between Southwark Street and Union Street

The alternative route would be via: Southwark Street, Southwark Bridge Road, Union Street.

INVERTON ROAD - NEW ZEBRA PEDESTRIAN CROSSING

Southwark Council hereby GIVES NOTICE that it proposes to establish a new Zebra Pedestrian Crossing in Inverton Road, as detailed below, under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended.

The Zebra pedestrian crossing (which is between the give way lines) shall commence at a point 10.4 metres northwest of the north-western kerbline of Lanbury Road, north-westwards for a distance of 8 metres.

On the north-western side of Inverton Road, zig zag parking restrictions shall be placed for a distance of 17.2 metres in advance of the zebra pedestrian crossing and for a distance of 4.4 metres downstream of the zebra pedestrian crossing, prohibiting parking from a point 35.6 metres northwest of the north-western kerbline of Lanbury Road, to a point 6 metres northwest of that kerbline.

On the south-eastern side of Inverton Road, zig zag parking restrictions shall be placed for a distance of 17.2 metres in advance of the zebra pedestrian crossing and for a distance of 4.4 metres downstream of the zebra pedestrian crossing, prohibiting parking from a point 0.4 metres northwest of a point opposite the south-eastern kerbline of Lanbury Road, to a point 30 metres northwest of a point opposite that kerbline.

BOXER CHARLIE Wynn has teamed up with Millwall Supporters’ Club in a move that he hopes will increase his exposure and bring the same kind of atmosphere to his fights as Lions fans create in football arenas.

Millwall season-ticket holder Wynn put the word out on social media recently that he was looking for extra sponsorship, and Millwall fan on the board Micky Simpson responded before then helping to organise the link-up.

The year-long deal will involve, among other things, the group assisting in promoting his fights.

Wynn is hoping for six bouts in the next year, with a November 25 welterweight clash at York Hall next on the cards when the 28year-old will be hoping to improve his 2-0 professional record.

Wynn combines his day job as an electrician with six days a week of training. As well as promoting his fights to Millwall fans, there is a commercial element, with limitededition Charlie ‘Chopper’ Wynn badges on sale before the Lions’ next home game against Burton this Saturday.

Wynn is excited by the prospect of a profile boost with people he considers “one of my own”.

“I put a thing on Twitter a few weeks ago looking for sponsors and it got a few retweets,” Wynn said, explaining how the deal came about.

“Micky got in contact saying they might be able to do something with the MSC. “It’s great exposure, and first and foremost exposure among Millwall fans. They’re the people you want to be exposed to. Wynn has had a busy few months.

He has recently moved to Bromley and joined the IBox Gym run by Al Smith and Eddie Lam. It more suits his schedule and the camp also hosts Bradley Skeete and Johnny Garton.

“It’s full-on,” Wynn said. “I train six days a week with usually Sunday off. Last week I was

working Saturday and Sunday, it’s so busy sometimes there’s no time for normality.

“People don’t always see what you put in.

“I’m building up to November 25 at Bethnal Green. It’s a Steve Goodwin show, I signed a threeyear promotional deal. Johnny Garton talks highly of him. It’s a bit more exposure and I’m at the same camp as Johnny, which is five minutes from my house.”

Wynn also explained the benefit of working with his new trainers.

He said: “I’m naturally a fighter, that’s what the game is all about for me. But they get me to think a little more, to work defence as well as offence and not go in with all guns blazing.”

Along with his work and training, Wynn will also continue to be a familiar face at The Den as he looks forward to another packed year.

“Steve Goodwin will get me busy in the next year, he runs shows linked with [David Haye’s] Hayemaker Promotions. There are a few of his fighters on their bills.

It could be a big year next year for me after being a bit stop-start this year moving house and gym.

“I’ll be down The Den every second week and Micky has said they will try to get me on the pitch at some point to introduce me to the fans.”

Double Olympic champion Holmes helping Southwark youngsters get back on track

YOUNG SOUTHWARK people are among those set to benefit from an employment programme led by the charity of double Olympic gold medallist Dame Kelly Holmes.

Over 250 young people facing disadvantage in the capital will be mentored by Olympic and Paralympic athletes and they will have work experience opportunities at 50 London businesses.

The eight-month programme will initially support young people in Southwark, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley, with the aim of delivering long-term employment for some of the capital’s most disadvantaged young people.

The programme, called ‘Getting Back on Track’, is being delivered in partnership with Vi-Ability, London South East Colleges, Shooters Hill College and Lewisham Southwark College, with funding provided by Greater London Authority through the European Social Fund.

Speaking at its launch at City Hall on Tuesday, October 31, Dame Kelly said: “We believe as a charity that every young person – no matter what their background or current circumstances – has the potential to lead a positive life, which includes being able to enjoy career success.

“One of the biggest things we hear from industry is that young people arrive

with a lack of soft skills, which leads to challenges with performance and retention. Our trained athlete mentors have the proven ability to unlock the attitudes and behaviours needed to be successful in the workplace, which includes traits such as confidence, motivation, determination and resilience.

“Employers who recruit from our programmes are consistently impressed by their talent and focus, despite not always having the best start in life. Most importantly, our young people find themselves being given opportunities and progression that they might once never have thought possible.”

Deputy Mayor of London Joanne McCartney AM added: “Deciding

whether to continue with education at the age of sixteen can be a difficult decision, and we know that many students are unsure about which path to take. All young people deserve the chance for a bright future, and the ‘Getting Back on Track’ partnership provides a new way of working which will equip them with vital employment skills and opportunities, should they decide college is not for them.

“This is one of many fantastic employment and skills projects funded

by London’s share of the England European Social Fund programme. It hasn’t been confirmed whether any new funding will take its place after Brexit, and I urge Government to take steps to

ensure there is no gap in support to the young Londoners who need it most.”

Founder and Chair of Vi-Ability, Kelly Davies, hopes the scheme will make a “real difference”.

She said: “We’re delighted to be partnering with the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust to deliver ‘Getting Back on Track’ which sees some of the best elements of our award-winning ‘Run the Club’ programme being combined with Dame Kelly Holmes Trust’s ‘Get on Track’ programme.

“Through ‘Getting Back on Track’ we’re hoping to make a real difference to young people’s lives and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it develops.”

A FIVE-GOAL haul from Bjorn Thomas and a hat-trick from Melvyn M’Bolo earned Docklands their seventh straight win, making it 57 goals scored and just one conceded so far this season.

Docklands under-8s were unlucky in falling to 4-2 and 3-1 defeats to Petts Wood away from home.

Docklands created numerous chances and played some attractive football only for their finishing to let them down.

MILLWALL LIONESSES produced a stunning display to come back from two goals down to extend their unbeaten league run to eleven games after Ashlee Hincks’ penalty gave them a dramatic 3-2 win against London Bees at the Hive last weekend.

Stansfeld started off poorly and were two goals behind within seven minutes, Liam Whittaker putting his side ahead before an own goal from George Martin.

With an uphill battle in front of them, Stansfeld started to get a foothold in the game and were rewarded with a goal in the 29th minute as Harry Gamble finished off a fine move.

But within a few minutes Kent were two goals in front again when Nic Gonsalaves tapped home from close range. The hosts’ poor defending continued and a minute before the break Kent added a fourth goal through Ahmed Dean.

Things were going from bad to worse for Stansfeld and three minutes after the restart Tunde Aderonmu added a fifth.

Stansfeld pulled a goal back in the 52nd minute through Billy Shinners, but slack defending again in the 60th minute allowed Tom Skelton to add a sixth goal for Kent.

Stansfeld brought on all three subs and one of them, Nathan Flaher, pulled a goal back with eighteen minutes left but it didn’t spark an unlikely comeback.

CONOR MCLAUGHLIN believes there is no chance of Millwall being complacent against Burton this weekend – after already being shocked against another relegation candidate at The Den this season.

The Lions faced Barnsley in September after impressive wins over Norwich, Leeds and Reading, but were torn apart as the Tykes repeated their 31 play-off final win in 2016.

It’s been a recurring problem for Millwall in the last two seasons, after they followed up some big FA Cup victories last season by dropping points against the likes of Chesterfield and Bury in the very next fixture.

Northern Ireland international McLaughlin feels they have been warned about the pitfalls of not hitting their normal standards, and knows home form is crucial to Millwall’s survival in the Championship this season.

“In motivational terms they are both very similar, and you have to be to get the best out of the players that you have,” he explained.

“We’re underdogs in this league in terms of budgets and the size of some of the clubs we’re coming up against. With Northern Ireland it’s the same, we have players from League One, League Two, Scottish Premier League, Championship.

“There are similarities but that adds up to why we’ve got such great team spirit in both teams.”

If Northern Ireland can overcome favourites Switzerland, they will reach their first World Cup finals since 1986 in Mexico.

McLaughlin added: “It’s probably the biggest thing you can achieve as a player. There are players in the Premier League who get to play in massive games every week, so for me it would

“The games are coming thick and fast, but I love it.

“I wasn’t properly settled in London for a month because we had to get a house, but that’s all sorted now and

we’re enjoying being it here as a family.

“It takes a bit of time to get used to the way of playing and to new team-mates but I’m really happy now.”

at full-time, but he had been spot on when blowing for a foul when Lee Tomlin flicked the ball away from Archer as the goalkeeper was about to kick out of his hands, before the midfielder found the back of an empty net. There seemed quite a bit of confusion with the decision from the home bench, but the ball is not back in play until it hits the ground after being in the goalkeeper’s possession. A little green tick among all the black marks for the man in the middle.

All in all, both managers were generally pleased with their teams’ performances.

Harris refused to say afterwards that his side have now established themselves in this division, and warned his players he won’t be afraid to make changes when the January transfer window opens if standards drop.

“We’re monitoring situations all the time,” Harris said. “It’s ever-changing decisions because of form and injuries to current players, squad size, league position – there are loads of things in the equation.

“It also depends on who becomes available from elsewhere. We have to make sure that our recruitment department has all the knowledge away from the pitch on players. They also need

all the knowledge from me on what we might need.

“It’s too early to start thinking about who we want to sign in January, if anybody.

“I’m delighted with what we have achieved so far, but there is a long way to go and we can be better. We’ve dropped points this year when we should have got more in games.

“Players are being judged all the time.

Some players have had a really good first quarter of the season and some have been a bit slower and are waiting for opportunities. No doubt they will come over the season.

“A warning to my players would be that if they don’t hit the standards they have set on and off the pitch every week, then someone’s going to come and take their place.

“That’s the reality of the level we’re at.”

IF MISTAKES can make or break a footballer then Jordan Archer has shown he is made of stern stuff.

Since Archer’s error gifted Ipswich a goal in a 4-3 defeat in August he has produced some superb displays and is ranked among the highest percentage shot-stoppers in the Championship this season.

Archer, 24, has saved almost 80 per cent of shots he has faced from over 50, with only Aston Villa’s Sam Johnstone topping that.

His confidence could have taken a hammering after he parried in Joe Garner’s long-ranger against the Tractor Boys, but since then his form has earned a call-up to the Scotland senior squad, first under Gordon Strachan and then, this week, interim boss Malkay Mackay.

Archer was never likely to let the mistake affect his performances and also has goalkeeping coach Kevin Pressman, as well as back-up stoppers David Martin and Tom King, pushing him so much in training every day that he doesn’t have time to worry about the past.

“I had the one against Ipswich where the ball moves at the last second and makes you look like an absolute idiot, but that’s the nature of the game,” Archer said.

“As a keeper you have to be mentally strong and that’s something I have in abundance. If you don’t have confidence you’re going to make mistakes. I’ve made some and I’m going to make more. You see keepers at the top, the best keepers, making mistakes. It’s how you bounce back from it.

“I learn from mistakes, there’s no point beating yourself up. It’s done and I’m confident that when the next ball comes I’ll make a save.

“Kevin Pressman has been so important. This is my third year here and I’ve had my ups and downs but he has been fantastic. He’s been through it all, he had a great career at the top level so to have someone like him give advice when you have that dip in form is crucial. He’ll keep me level-headed.

“I was welcome to David Martin coming in and he’s been fantastic.

He’s an experienced goalkeeper and if he sees things he’ll tell me. To have that along with Kevin Pressman is only going to help me.

“At the same time he’s an established goalkeeper and is at an age when he wants to play. I know he’s going to challenge me and I welcome that challenge.

“It was the same when Kingy [Tom King] was number two, he was always pushing me. I’ve got two good goalkeepers behind me so I know I’ve got to keep my levels up and be as consistent as I can to keep my place.

“We have good relationships and have a good laugh but that competition is there at the same time.

goalkeepers who can be bitter towards each other but here it’s the total opposite, we all get on well.”

Archer has kept almost one clean sheet every two games in his firstever season in Championship football.

The ball being used this season, the Mitre Delta, is different to what he was used to in League One last

season. Archer claims it moves differently, though he doesn’t want that to be an excuse for letting in goals.

“A lot of saves goalkeepers make these days are reaction saves. People probably don’t notice the pace the ball is coming at you. The ball moves a lot,” he said.

“Shots do move a hell of a lot, there

are a lot of different ways of striking the balls now, players know how to make the ball dip and move.

“I’m training every day so there’s no excuses, there’s little use complaining about it.

“This year there’s a different design but we’ve had more than enough time to get used to it, I’ve been using it since the first day of pre-season.

Archer will be hoping for another clean sheet to add to the three in the league at The Den this season when Millwall face Burton Albion this Saturday.

Straight after that he joins up with the Scotland squad. His mum, Fiona McRitchie, is from Clydebank and though Archer was born in Walthamstow the Scottish connection was always present in his home.

He said: “My grandparents had the strongest Scottish accents so I was always around that.

“I was over the moon when I got the call. It was two weeks before the official announcement so I had to keep it under wraps.

“I told my mum and the first thing she wanted to do was phone our family up in Scotland but she couldn’t.

“It was a massive honour for me and my family. I’ve been playing for Scotland since the 19s and 21s so the natural progression was to eventually get the call-up to the senior squad.

“They’ve got Craig Gordon, who is playing Champions League. David Marshall and Allan McGregor are there as well, established first-team keepers, but I’m not going there to make up the numbers. At the same time I’m under no illusions, I just want to take it all in and learn as much as I can. If I keep playing well down here then I’m sure my chance will come.

“I’m a confident lad and wasn’t going to go there and shy away from anything, I wanted to show them what I could offer.

“Thanks go to Gordon Strachan and Jim Stewart, the goalkeeping coach, for giving me my first call-up.”

Archer’s ambitions to eventually be Scotland’s number one goalkeeper will be enhanced if he helps Millwall stay up this season.

And that will continue with keeping up their impressive home form this weekend.

“Coming to The Den as an away team, I can’t imagine it’s very nice,” Archer said. “We’re a very physical team and when The Den is packed it’s a very hostile place.

“I think our home form will be crucial this year. Away from home we’ve had some unlucky goals against us, poor refereeing decisions.

“Still, I think there have only been a couple of games where we have been outplayed. At the start of the season people had us touted to go down.

“It was a motivation, being a club coming up and the first challenge was to stay in the division for that first season. We didn’t know how well we would do but I think we’ve shown we are more than comfortable at this level.

“I think we’ve been the better team in most of the games that we’ve played and we are enjoying the challenge of the Championship.

“We need to pick more away wins because that will be crucial to our survival this season.

“We’re not going into any game fearing any team. Every game we go into we firmly believe we can get the three points.”

Defender sees red as Millwall fall to sixth league defeat

MILLWALL’S RUN without a win away from home in the Championship now stands at fifteen games after defeat at Hillsborough on Tuesday night.

The Lions started at a slower pace than their hosts, who fizzed the ball around from the first whistle and even though it was only three minutes in it wasn’t exactly a shock when Millwall fell behind to Adam Reach’s finish from Morgan Fox’s low cross.

Millwall were stretched, Wednesday obviously seeing the way to open them up was to move the ball quickly and attack with width and rapid movement from strikers Jordan Rhodes and Gary Hooper.

Carlos Carvalhal had made five changes to his side from their 1-1 draw

at home against Barnsley last weekend, and the fact that £10million Rhodes was one of them again emphasised what Millwall are competing against at this level.

Rhodes got what proved to be the winner two minutes before half-time – his fourth career goal against the Lions – nodding in Jacob Butterfield’s corner from eight yards. Millwall had the best away defensive record in the league before Tuesday night, having conceded just five goals in seven games. They certainly hadn’t been giving away easy goals like that.

Only Aston Villa’s goalkeeper Sam Johnstone had a higher save percentage than Jordan Archer in the Championship this season, and the Millwall stopper produced another spectacular effort to add to this season’s scrapbook when he tipped over Barry Bannan’s effort before Glenn Loovens saw his shot from the corner blocked by

Tom Elliott.

Moments later Elliott was at the other end of the pitch tracking towards the back post as Wednesday switched off to allow Fred Onyedinma in on goal. The attacker’s shot was deflected beyond the back stick and Elliott was there to turn in his fourth goal of the season.

Those sequences of play summed up the early part of the game. It was real helter-skelter stuff with the Owls committing to all-out attack and Millwall hitting them on the break with pace.

Bannan and Butterfield were operating cleverly, keeping Millwall guessing with their ability to play short, sharp passes or, alternatively, clipping balls over the top of the opposition defence trying to pick out their strikers.

Ross Wallace and Adam Reach were the wide men on the team sheet but were always coming inside, Wednesday’s width then maintained by

full-backs Reach and Liam Palmer. It was simple but very effective and in the 25th minute Palmer tested Archer with a shot from inside the box that the goalkeeper batted away at his near post.

Millwall managed the hosts better in the second half as the dynamic of the game changed, the visitors pressing and Wednesday now deeper and proving dangerous on the counter-attack.

Millwall probably should have taken at least one of their chances in that period. Jed Wallace picked out Shane Ferguson’s run but the winger was slightly off balance as Keiren Westwood came off his line to block.

Centre-back Jake Cooper strode into midfield before passing to Wallace and continuing his run. Wallace returned the ball to him and Cooper was through on Westwood but the defender stabbed wide as he was closed down.

Craig has featured just once in the Championship this season, as an 89th-minute substitute against Birmingham.

Millwall Neil Harris wants his side to produce the same levels of intensity this weekend that they did when they defeated some of the big guns in the Championship this season.

The Lions have beaten Norwich, Leeds, Reading and Birmingham at home – but lost to Barnsley in one of their worst performances of the season at The Den. Burton Albion, as expected, have struggled this season, but Harris wants his side to approach the game the same way they would a fixture against some of the division’s heavier hitters.

“It’s a massive game between two teams widely tipped to be in and around the bottom three by the majority of people,” Harris said.

“That’s not embarrassing to say, that’s just reality.

“We’ve had some really good

victories against established Championship sides in Leeds, Norwich, Reading and Birmingham, but we came unstuck against Barnsley because we gave away poor goals.

“We need to make sure that on the back of two big games against Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday we’ve got the same intensity, quality and desire against Burton that we’ve had in previous games.”

turned inside on his stronger right foot and that gave Loovens the chance to make the block.

Millwall left more gaps as they pressed, and Rhodes hit the post with a header as Wednesday looked like they would add a third.

Harris’ side failed to really threaten an equaliser in the closing period despite now having Lee Gregory, Steve Morison and Aiden O’Brien on the pitch.

And their Halloween misery was compounded when Cooper was sent off in the 93rd minute after picking up a second yellow card. Cooper will now be banned for the home game with Burton this weekend.

Millwall fans would have been better off avoiding the statistical preview of this game as it made for grim reading.

The Lions had lost each of their last six games on Halloween, while Sheffield Wednesday hadn’t lost on October 31 in

twelve games going back to 1953.

Perhaps wanting to spring a Halloween scare of his own on the opponents, Harris paired Elliott and Onyedinma up front and it was unlucky thirteen for the Owls as that was the minute the duo combined to pull their side level. Elliott made the finish look relatively straightforward after Onyedinma’s shot had deflected in his direction, but it was anything but as he acrobatically flicked up his right leg to finish with the outside of his boot.

Elliott had waited all season for his first league start, and it was some surprise that it came when Harris decided to leave his preferred front two, Gregory and Morison, on the bench at the same time. Elliott and Onyedinma were dangerous opponents when Wednesday’s attacking intent in the the first half meant they left space for Millwall to attack. The duo were less effective after the break with no space to

run into behind the home side’s defence.

Harris has several difficult selection decisions to make before Saturday, with Elliott and Onyedinma pushing for places and someone needed to deputise for Cooper.

Despite the loss on Tuesday night, Harris was in upbeat mood. “I’m really enjoying the games. The SaturdayTuesday-Saturday period is intense and there is a lot of preparation and recovery, but it’s enjoyable going to places like Cardiff, Hillsborough. It’s great for us as a group, it’s where we aspired to get to over the last two years.

“We have to enjoy it even in defeat, we look back on the positives from the game.

“After we weathered the first 20 minutes I thought we were excellent at times. We needed that little bit more quality in our delivery into the box, that little bit better contact at set-pieces and there were a couple of clear-cut

chances we should score.

“That’s the differences between the two sides, their two goals and us not scoring two.”

Wednesday’s win was just their second in eight games, as they climbed above Millwall and moved up to fourteenth in the table.

Carvalhal said his side knew how difficult it would be to break Millwall down. “We didn’t give too many chances away to Millwall. We had some counter-attacks and the header from Jordan Rhodes. We are very happy he scored, it was important in that moment.

“We played a team that defended well. We saw what they were doing and it’s not easy to achieve goals.

“Last week in Cardiff they drew and they are not an easy team to play against. We did well, we were not nervous to play direct balls to the attackers, right and left.

“The first time Millwall were inside our area they scored. We weren’t nervous because we felt we would achieve a goal.

“If we achieved the third we killed the game. But it was more important for the players to keep the score.”

Millwall will be relatively pleased with where they sit after fifteen games, seven points clear of the bottom three, and only six off the top six.

Against struggling Burton they will have the chance to further establish themselves in the division before a twoweek gap until the trip to Sunderland.

“The international break gives some people the chance to recharge their batteries and some people the chance to represent their countries, which is a great achievement,” Harris said. “It gives people the chance to get minutes in the under-23s.

“But before that break we’ve got one hell of a game Saturday.”

resting first-choice front pair Steve Morison and Lee Gregory as well as Aiden O’Brien.

Harris is down to just two fit centre-backs this weekend, but has more options up front after being pleased with the performances of Fred Onyedinma and Tom Elliott, who scored his fourth goal of the campaign this week.

“They were excellent, both of them, they looked hungry to show what they can do,” Harris said. “I was delighted for Tom that he got a goal.

“I made a decision to take players out of the team who had done well on Saturday, Steve, Lee, Aiden, just for fresh legs. It was no slight on their performance at the weekend or this season, because they have been excellent.

“Tony certainly comes into the reckoning. I’ve got a few players that can play there. I can’t protect the decision with Jake, that’s something he’s got to learn from.”

Millwall will be expected to beat second-last Burton this weekend and go into the third international

break of the season in high spirits.

Harris said: “It’s a game that I expect a response from my players in, and I will get a response, no shadow of a doubt about that. We need the fans to come and be up for it as well.

“It’s a huge game for us. I think throughout the season more composure would have given us more points, we’ve not been ruthless enough or clinical enough. That separates players at the top of this level and where we are at the moment, players aspiring to get there.”

Craig is one of a number of Millwall players doing his coaching badges, including Steve Morison, Shaun Williams and Byron Webster.

Craig has been kept out of the first team this season by James Meredith and his current contract runs out next June.

Harris stressed Craig’s future won’t be determined by how much game time he does or doesn’t get in this campaign.

“There’s no link between Tony and James. Tony is the club captain and has had a couple of really good years for me leading the group,” Harris said.

“He played over 50 games last year and led us to Wembley.

He’s a vital part of the squad but has had to be patient this year.

His opportunity hasn’t come along yet, but who knows what is going to happen in football.

“He’s a big part of what we’re trying to do here and moving forward we need the captain of the club for as long as he wants to stay. Time will dictate that one.

“He’s started his coaching badges and I like players doing that because it gives them understanding, an insight into the thought process of some of my methods of coaching.

“They’ve got all the experience of game day but I like them to know the backgrounds of coaching sessions as well. It makes sense to have as much knowledge in the football club as possible.

“Tony will be a good coach one day.”
