A NEW street in Walworth has been named after Iraq War hero Private Lee O’Callaghan, who was killed in combat in 2004.

Brave Lee was fatally shot in the chest on August 9 during clashes with Shia militiamen in the city of Basra.

The 20-year-old had been on duty for five months, with one week left

before he was due to fly home on leave and be reunited with his family.

Last Friday, the O’Callaghan Way street sign was unveiled in the nearly-completed section of Elephant Park, and will link Heygate Street with Wansey Street.

The internet is not the end of the line for the phone

W

hile a lot of people use the internet and social media to do their daily business, the phone is not yet redundant.

This week the council ditched plans to change its free[phone 0800 repairs line number to a 0300 one which would see some residents - those on pay as you go mobile - having to shell out more on their calls.

The council argued that it was hoping to encourage more people to report problems online, and we can see why - it would be a lot more cost effective for them if everyone did so.

But some people prefer to use the phone.

It's more immediate, you get to actually speak to someone and you get to ask questions and (hopefully) get answers straightaway. So in some ways it's actually better than filling in a form online or sending an email.

The council made the right choice in dropping its plans. It is here to serve the people; some of those people (and not just the old ones) still prefer to get things sorted on the phone.

Lee lost his life in August 2004, when he was shot during clashes with Shia militiamen in Basra, Iraq. He had been on duty for five months, with only one week left before he was due to fly home on leave to see his family.

Years ago Millwall fans Lee Evans and John Davies campaigned with the News to get Lee honoured with a street name, after a scheme was set up to remember local heroes and historical figures as part of the area's regeneration.

Last Friday the O’Callaghan street sign was unveiled in the nearly completed area of Elephant Park and will link Heygate Street and Wansey Street.

A full unveiling and celebration will take place when construction work has finished at the other end of O’Callaghan Way. Now, in the words of his proud mum Shirley, Lee 'will never be forgotten'.

People who know his story will be reminded of his bravery every time they pass his street. And in the future, curious passersby may want to search online why the street has such a name, and they too will learn for the first time of his heroism.

National Archives shows police mugshots from the early 1900s

A NEW exhibition will shine a light on Edwardian London’s problem drinkers – including reprobates from Southwark.

The exhibition, on display from October 27 at the National Archives at Kew, showcases the “Portraits and descriptions of habitual drunkards” issued by the police in 1903 to public houses across the capital.

In 1902, the government introduced a Licensing Act to prevent problem drinkers from being served. Police circulated mugshots of repeat offenders to landlords, to help crack down on drunkenness and alcohol-fuelled crime.

According to the National Archives at Kew, the majority of barred drinkers were women.

Ellen Sullivan, variously known as Ellen McCarthy and Ellen Carter, was aged 28 when she fell foul of the law. Ellen lived at 27 Lanfranc Street, on Westminster Bridge Road, and was employed at the Jam factory on Borough’s Staple Street.

Despite holding down two jobs as both a factory hand and flower seller, 4’11” Ellen was convicted at Southwark Court on January 5 in 1903. She was fined 20 shillings, or fourteen days’ imprisonment in the event of being unable to pay.

Forty-six year-old Annie King, who lived at 99 Mint Street, was convicted on January 27. Her occupation was listed as ‘charwoman’. Annie was regularly found in a drunken state around Southwark Bridge Road, and received the same sentence as Ellen Sullivan for her misdemeanours.

Borough Market worker William O’Shaughnessy, who also went by the name of John Walsh, lived at St Olave’s Chambers on Borough’s Sylvester Street and was often seen around ‘High-street, Borough.’ He was convicted on January 9, for one month, for drunkenness.

George Whelpley, a 42-year-old waterside labourer, was sentenced to six months in prison on January 8, after failing to find anyone prepared to stump up his bail money when he was arrested for boozy behaviour. Also going by the aliases of George Whatley and James Green, the notice advised that he ‘frequents Tooley-street’.

Alfred Fullerton, of 96 Southwark Street, Borough, worked in Piccadilly as a ‘street hawker’.

Known for frequenting the Jermyn Street area, the Southwark-dweller was described as ‘poek-pitted, front teeth deficient in upper jaw, arms tattooed.’ He was handed a 21 day sentence on January 15.

around the corner from where younger brother Danny, and proud mum Shirley O’Callaghan, both work at F A Albin & Sons funeral directors.

“He was a funny brother. I looked up to him and he was my inspiration,” said Danny, 29. “Now it’s going to be there forever. He’s really left his mark on the area.

“That spot is exactly where our first home was. A lot of our family lived on the Heygate. My dad [Eugene] came here from Ireland and we had aunties and cousins in the blocks.”

Shirley, 58, from Tatum Street, said: “People always come up with these ideas, but you never think they’re going to be put into practice. It went through so many stages, but now we

can actually see it.”

“Lee will never be forgotten. All of his friends who were in the army with Lee come and meet us at the cemetery and come for dinner with us. The army is like a family. They always get in touch without fail.”

The last time one of Lee’s family heard his voice was when the young soldier called home a few days earlier to speak to dad Eugene, on his birthday. The whole family, including sisters Gemma and Kerry, had been looking forward to him coming home on leave the following week. Instead, they got a visit from two army officers saying Lee had given his life helping his comrades to safety, after two Land Rovers were destroyed by

attended shortly after 9pm, and he was taken to King’s College Hospital, where he died of a single stab wound to his groin.

Investigations revealed that a group of twelve youths were on the estate at the time of the attack. It is believed five of these youths attacked Edvin, and another man who was left injured.

But neither of the two victims were believed to have been the intended target.

Two silver-handled knives were later found together by police. One of them was stained with Edvin’s blood.

Last week, Genevive Johnson said

her son was “a wonderful young man” and had been due to start at the University of Southampton.

DI Justin Howick of the Met's Homicide and Serious Crime Command, said: “To date we have not been able to bring the perpetrator to justice. I am convinced that there were people on the Crawford Estate on the night of the murder who saw what happened but didn't feel able to speak with police at the time.”

Danny and Shirley gave thanks to fellow Millwall fans, Lee Evans and John Davies, who led the campaign with the News to cement Lee’s name in the area where he was born and bred.

Lee’s name was put forward with more than 130 suggestions to name new streets and blocks in the borough over the next fifteen years. The family said a full unveiling and celebration will take place when construction has finished at the other end of O’Callaghan Way.

No new leads in unsolved murder CAMBERWELL

POLICE HAVE received no new leads, despite an appeal last week for information about the unsolved murder of Camberwell man Edvin Johnson.

A reward for £20,000 has been offered in exchange for new information that could lead to the conviction of the killer or killers.

Mr Johnson was nineteen-years-old when he was found in a pool of blood near his home on the Crawford Estate, on September 16, 2007.

POLICE HAVE upped patrols in Rotherhithe after two fitness groups were targeted by gangs of youths.

Officers have increased their presence in the area when Bootcamp SE16 and Rotherhithe Runners sessions are held after the groups were on the receiving end of anti-social behaviour.

A push bike was recently stolen and a female runner was allegedly pulled to the ground by her hair after groups of teenagers began loitering around Stave Hill ecological park and Greenland Dock as the evenings draw closer.

A representative of Bootcamp SE16 said the club had strategies to deal with anti-social behaviour – but that they should be able to just enjoy themselves.

“There was an incident recently when one of our members was walking home and there was quite a big group of them, so he knocked on someone’s door to wait inside until they were gone,” said the representative, who did not want to be named.

“He felt intimated because there were about sixteen of them and one of him.

“We are tackling that by trying to get people to walk home together and drive together.

“But we aren’t the only ones having issues with them. The real attack was on Rotherhithe Runners on September 12.

“They are just a local group of mums who run every week and one of them had her pony tail pulled by one of the group of girls and she was pulled down to the floor.”

The bootcamp member said she had noticed a rise in crime in the area since moving there in 2007.

“There definitely seems to be a rise in activity in that area,” she said. “The difference between then and now is the police don’t have the resources because of the cuts so we as a community need to be vigilant.

“We have a brilliant community and we’ve been doing it a really long time so this just kind of puts a dampener on the whole thing.

“We are just trying to keep fit and do our

thing and so are the runners and it’s the fact those youths are just trying to intimidate us.

“We should be able to just have our sessions and enjoy ourselves; we all have the right to live in a safe area.

“What they did to those runners was atrocious.”

Inspector Jim Cole of Southwark police told the News ward officers had arranged to patrol those areas of Rotherhithe when the fitness group sessions were being held.

“We have a neighbourhood tasking team who come in and support the ward officers and once we’ve identified offenders or specific patrols we need to do we will deploy those,” he said.

“If anyone witnessed any anti-social behaviour or has any information about these incidents, please contact police on 101 or @MetCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

A police steering meeting held in Rotherhithe last Wednesday attracted more residents than ever, who voiced concerns over crime in the area.

During the meeting, it was revealed that officers would soon move out of Rotherhithe police station, which is closing, and into a building behind Seven Islands leisure centre, in Lower Road.

Inspector Cole told the News: “There’s a purpose-built base on land behind the Seven Islands leisure centre and the teams are still in Rotherhithe police station at present.”

He added that there had been conversations between British Land and the Met Police about having a police base in the Canada Water Masterplan development once it is built, but this is yet to be agreed.

Surrey Docks ward councillor Dan Whitehead added that there was an “exceptionally high turnout from residents” at the meeting.

“There was a lot of anger about the action needed to handle the increased volume of crime in the area,” he said.

“I therefore promised to write to the Chief Inspector demanding a meeting as soon as possible with local residents.

“Liberal Democrat councillors will keep working with residents to ensure that these crimes are reported and taken seriously."

Peckham Men-ders club for older and unemployed men to meet and do DIY hit in raid

A ‘MEN’S Shed’ for retired gents is appealing for help after nearly £1,200 of donated tools were nicked by burglars.

The Men-ders club was set up by Age UK Lewisham and Southwark, to give older and unemployed men a place to socialise and do some old fashioned DIY. The old library building it moved into in April last year, with funds from the Big Lottery, is now like a second home for its 20 weekly regulars.

The group’s lead volunteer, 60year-old Axel Sabass, told the News: “There’s plenty of things for women to do as they get older and want to socialise. But for many older men, with a lack of purpose or who are becoming isolated, there’s only pubs or betting offices.

“We think these projects should become just as typical as men using the sheds in their gardens. But a lot of people in this area don’t have gardens.”

But on Monday, September 18, staff arrived at work to find they had

been burgled during the weekend.

Police believe the thieves broke in via a store room at the back of the building, which is shared with Pecan foodbank. They squeezed through a small window less than two feet high, and Axel explained that they had unbolted a set of metal bars from the window.

Nikki Burland, an outreach worker for the charity, said the value of the stolen tools was £1,196. But what represents “a bigger blow” was the fact that all the tools were donations.

The Shed’s regulars built all of the worktops out of scrap wood donated to them by local businesses.

Sometimes the donations are more unusual, and Axel pointed to scraps from old pews donated from a church. The volunteers and regulars welcome locals looking for someone to fix their lap tops. A row of sewing machines were also donated from the Aylesbury Estate T&RA. Nikki added: “The idea is someone can bring absolutely anything along and we will try and fix it. The aim is that when the project is more fully and up and running, we will be able to go out and do more community projects.”

A police spokesman said: “Officers have carried out a number of enquiries but have, at this time, been unable to identify a suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact officers at Peckham police station.”

THE FOUR-year-old daughter of late Bermondsey boy Jack Wells has been treated to an “incredible” safari trip, something her dad wished to do with his little girl before he passed away.

Scarlett Flood Wells was delighted by monkeys, giraffes and tigers as she was taken through Woburn Safari Park with her grandma and auntie, on September 23.

Jack’s mum Veronica Carter told the News: “We went off-road in a ranger’s Jeep, and right up close to the animals – face to face with wolves and bears.

“Scarlett really loved the monkeys.

One jumped on the car. It ran on the roof and sat on the windscreen. It was staring at her and she was just laughing at it.

“It was lovely, we all had an

amazing day. I’ve never been before but we’ll definitely be going again,” the 48-year-old said.

The trip was originally planned as one of many things that Jack wanted to do with Scarlett before his death, and was paid for by The MumMum Foundation.

The 23-year-old was diagnosed with bone cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma, at the start of 2015, after finding a lump on his shoulder. But Jack lost his battle with the disease on June 27, 2016, having spent his final days at St Christopher’s Hospice in Sydenham.

Veronica spoke of her gratitude to Gary Valentine-Fuller, who set up the MumMum Foundation, and is of two directors of the Valentine & Turner Funeral Directors. The company led Jack’s funeral, which saw a procession and saw Jack’s body carried by horse-drawn carriage.

Council drops plans to charge callers to housing repair line

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has dropped plans to bring in a housing-repairs phone line that would have charged callers.

The council had planned to gradually phase out its freephone 0800 number, and had already introduced a 0300 number that charged pay-as-you-go callers.

The decision was made by Southwark’s cabinet members on September 12, after Southwark Group of Tenants’ Organisation (SGTO) delivered its petition calling for charges to be scrapped.

Nearly 650 people signed the campaigners’ petition, including the mayor of Southwark, Charlie Smith.

SGTO’s campaigns officer Billy Harding said: “Our chair, Cris Claridge, gave a short speech at the meeting to the cabinet members.

After that the cabinet all agreed to keep it for free.

“They had obviously discussed it before. But Fiona Colley [cabinet member for finance] said they recognised it would really impact on pay-as-you-go phone users, which is

a lot of people in Southwark.”

A report published ahead of the cabinet members’ meeting said that callers could expect to be charged £2 for a ten-minute call (based on average network providers’ rates).

But the report also suggested that the 0300 number would not be intended as a means of raising money, but to encourage more residents to report problems to the council online.

“By ceasing use of a freephone number, we hope that this will encourage customers to go online,” the report said.

Billy added: “We’re all very happy.

We thought there would be more of discussion between the cabinet members, but it was quite quickly dealt with. It was a bad idea in the first place but we’re very glad the council did listen.”

Councillor Colley said: “Keeping our freephone number will ensure that all our tenants can continue to access housing repairs, but we also need to continue helping residents gain the digital skills and confidence they need through things like our free Introduction to IT sessions in libraries and the forthcoming SGTO Digital Tea Party.”

New Peckham hotel plans a four-floor basement PECKHAM

A HOTEL in Peckham is hoping to build a four-floor basement, allowing for 33 new guestrooms, a 74m2 swimming pool, changing rooms, and a gymnasium.

Plans for the ambitious project at the three-star Peckham Lodge in 110 Peckham Road were submitted in August by the London Hotel Group.

If given permission by Southwark Council, the four-storey hotel – run as part of the Best Western franchise – would effectively double in size.

The plans say the huge extension would

be excavated beneath the Victorian building’s front garden. The application also clarifies that nine of the 33 new guestrooms will be located in the existing floors above ground.

More typically associated with multimillion pound properties with subterranean hang-outs in Kensington and Belgravia, this is thought to be the first proposal of its type in its Southwark.

The only similar scheme known in the borough was a basement wine bar and swimming pool build beneath a home in East Dulwich. No comments have so far been submitted by residents, though its consultation period is set to end on October 8.

Peckham Travelodge gets the go-ahead

PLANS FOR a Travelodge hotel in Peckham High Street have been approved by the council.

Permission for the hotel chain to build the five-storey block at no. 125 was given by planning officers on September 8, rather than by Planning Committee.

Its construction will also require the demolition of the Post Office, Liz Dynamic Designs clothes shop, and the Payless convenience shop. But the plans say that a new retail space will be provided for the Post Office to return to, after it moves to a temporary home.

Travelodge, which owns 500 branches in the UK, say it will create five full-time jobs, and twelve parttime jobs. Eileen Conn of community group Peckham Vision previously said the idea of having a new hotel on the site would be “welcome”, but criticised the design

On Saturday, September 7, 1940, German planes dropped thousands of bombs on east London.

A prime target was Surrey Docks, which was reduced to an inferno as fires spread through its timber yards.

South Wharf smallpox receiving station, now the site of Surrey Docks Farm, was caught up in the devastation.

As part of the farm’s Piecing Together Our Past project, funded through the Heritage Lottery Fund, the details of what happened that night have been encapsulated in an

The first air raid began at about 5pm and it wasn’t long before South Wharf was encircled by flames.

The fire brigade had already begun evacuating residents from the surrounding area via the wharf onto a boat at the end of the pier.

The nurses ran down the burning pier and onto the boat, in which the police took them across the river to safety at Millwall Dock.

It was then the boat got into difficulty after a rope became tangled around its propeller.

One of the auxiliary firemen (civilians trained to help with firefighting during the war) Nathaniel Barnes, then 50, plunged into the water to free the propeller.

He was later recommended for a Commendation and although it wasn’t granted, his colleagues spoke highly of his selfless actions.

Meanwhile, auxiliary fireman Frederick Meeks, 26, was at Commercial Pier Wharf when he heard there were nurses stranded at South Wharf.

He attempted single-handedly to steer a small rowing boat along the river, avoiding dozens of barges drifting uncontrolled after having their ropes burnt through and with half of them on fire.

The tide carried him away but he was picked up by a fireboat and he continued fighting through the day and night. He was awarded a Commendation for his efforts.

Firemen Richard Ashton, 47, and James Bowtell, 43, came alongside in a fireboat and towed the barge of about 50 people away to safety at Nelson Dry Dock while bombing continued overhead.

It required a tremendous amount of skill and Ashton, who was in charge of the fireboat, was awarded the British Empire Medal, while Bowtell was awarded a Commendation.

Two firefighters – Timothy Muir, 43, and Samuel Melvin, 44 – rescued Sister Hope, the Matron in charge of the receiving station, who was forced to take refuge in a shed after the pier

collapsed, leaving her stranded.

The pair heard took the risk of going back for her and attempted to drive her to safety but their fire vehicle plunged into a water-filled bomb crater. They lifted her out and into another car nearby but it failed to start. After a frantic search they found an empty taxi and drove it out of the inferno to safety. They were both awarded the George Medal for risking their lives.

William Petley, a 59-year-old general mechanic employed at the receiving station who lived onsite, played a major part in fighting the blaze right from the start and was awarded the British Empire Medal.

Harold Barrett, 43, who was in charge of the crew that evacuated staff and residents and transported them across the river, was awarded a Commendation.

Relatives of the men travelled to an event at Surrey Docks Farm to hear about their bravery. David Reidy, the grandson of Richard Ashton, who had eleven children, organised for 25 relatives spanning four generations to be at the event.

He had already researched into his grandfather’s history but said there was little information about why he was awarded the British Empire Medal in his commendation letter.

“The whole family found it quite an emotional day, if I’m honest,” said

the 59-year-old.

“Even some of them in the generation below me who currently work on the river and have been in the fire service weren’t aware of this, so we found it quite emotional and one of his daughters shed a few tears.

“He [Ashton] did talk about it a bit but not a lot because he wasn’t that sort of person, and he had been in the Navy before that in WWI. “One of my cousins was a fireman and retired about five years ago and one of my cousins’ husbands was with the fire service for 27 years and he was quite tearful - because in those days the uniform was barely anything so they realised how much more difficult it would have been.”

A BERMONDSEY actor has penned a screenplay about a father who takes justice into his own hands after his young daughter is kidnapped.

Eddie Webber hopes to begin shooting scenes for his independent film Rough Justice by the end of the year if funding is secured.

The 55-year-old actor and writer said the film aimed to challenge people about what they would do if they came face to face with their child’s abductor.

“A ten-year-old girl disappears at a party and during a TV appeal her father – a special ops veteran who served in Iraq – just breaks free from all the rules,” said Webber, who has been acting for 30 years.

“He gets up, puts £50k on the table, shouts his mobile phone number out and says ‘this £50k is for anybody who gives me information about my daughter’.

“He gets an anonymous phone call which leads him to the house of a known paedophile and it goes from there. He takes justice into his own hands and so begins a journey of soulsearching and mindful violence.

“What we try to do through the film is challenge the viewer – although this soldier kills thirteen-year-old kids in the name of war, this other guy will do it in the name of desire, so who’s right and who’s wrong?”

Webber, who appeared in The Business alongside Danny Dyer, said Rough Justice was “a very intricate story with lots of twists and turns” – including a big twist at the end.

“I think it’s quite a challenging piece of work really because it’s a topic that’s so prevalent at the moment,” he said.

REVELATIONS THAT Southwark Council had illegally sold water and sewage services to more than 70,000 tenants has led to a flood of similar claims across the country, it has been revealed.

BERMONDSEY: A man in his twenties was stabbed on Tuesday evening.

Reports were received that a fight broke out between a small group of people in Lucey Way. Police confirmed that they were called to Ambrose Road, off Southwark Park Road, at 5:50pm.

The victim was attacked by a number of males. He was taken to a south London hospital, and his injuries were deemed to be not life threatening.

There have been no arrests.

Feminist festival to be held

SOUTHWARK: A feminist festival will be running this autumn, with a variety of events to celebrate Latin American cultural heritage.

The festival has been organised by The Feminist Library in Southwark, and includes activities such as tours, film screenings, open mics and typical cultural lunches to celebrate feminism in the Latin American community. A guided history walk will also be taking place in Elephant and Castle to help people learn more about the contribution of migrant communities to the area.

Southwark case, group litigation firm WaterClaimsUK was created to help tenants bring claims against councils and housing associations guilty of the same offence.

A spokesperson for the company told the News they have been contacted by 30,000 potential claimants, including from Scotland and Wales, but “the greatest number” coming from the Thames Water region.

SOUTHWARK: Condoms are to be given out for free at Southwark Libraries, the council has said.

The contraceptives are currently available at Dulwich Library, and will be rolled out at Peckham and Camberwell “over the next two weeks”. But it is not known whether their provision will be stretched to libraries in the north of the borough.

Ledbury Estate residents take to streets to demonstrate

LEDBURY ESTATE residents marched around the estate on Sunday to express their “frustration” over the lack of heating in their blocks.

Hannah Majid of the Ledbury Action Group said residents had growing concerns about what would be done to heat homes and quickly re-house residents as the weather begins to turn.

“We did a protest last week about the lack of heating, and people being made to live in the cold,” said Hannan, 38.

“They’ve got no gas, and they need adequate cookers to be provided. So it was because of frustration that we called for everyone to come and have a peaceful protest. The reason we have come back this time is because no action has been taken. We’re asking the council to get their brains together and make sure people don’t freeze.”

A DINGY Rye Lane shop could be transformed into a shining example of Edwardian architecture that once dominated Peckham’s town centre.

Local architect Benny O’Looney – the man behind the Peckham Rye Station waiting rooms revival – was hired by the owner of shop no. 211 to give it a touch of class. A planning application shows that three flats could be added above the shop. Benny said: “I love the architecture in Peckham. You see one of the great moments of Edwardian architecture, when the mood was to

Map gives lowdown on Low Line

A MAP showing a new historical walkway that links Vauxhall and Bermondsey has been drawn up.

The map shows a new route tracing a way across railway arches in a passageway known as the Low Line.

The Low Line is a development project supported by Southwark Council, which aims to turn four miles of disused railway viaduct between Vauxhall and Bermondsey into a new cultural environment.

The Low Line also has brand new way markers installed, in addition to their new map.

Hopes of new cycle law after Kim’s death

THE HUSBAND of Kim Briggs, who was killed after a bike ploughed into her as she crossed the road, has welcomed the Government’s urgent review into dangerous cycling legislation.

Matt Briggs said he was “very grateful” to the Government after Transport Minister Jesse Norman announced an urgent review into cycle safety last Thursday (September 21).

The review will look at whether a new offence equivalent to causing death by careless or dangerous driving should be introduced for cyclists, as well as wider improvements for cycling road safety issues.

It comes after the death of mother-oftwo Kim Briggs who was hit by a fixedwheel bike ridden by Bermondsey cyclist Charlie Alliston as she crossed the road in Shoreditch on February 12 last year.

Alliston, now 20, whose fixed gear bike had no front brakes, was cleared of manslaughter last month but convicted under the 19th century offence of "wanton or furious driving".

He was sentenced to eighteen months in a younger offenders’ institution on September 18.

Mr Briggs thanked the Government for being “so swift and so responsive” during an interview with Sky News.

“Kim was the most fun woman, a real fun-loving woman, and I want to do something that’s positive, that’s optimistic, that’s looking forward because in doing that I can stop the shockwaves of this tragedy.”

Transport Minister Jesse Norman said on Thursday: “It’s great that cycling has become so popular in recent years but we need to make sure that our road safety rules keep pace with this change.

“We already have strict laws that ensure that drivers who put people’s lives at risk are punished but, given recent cases, it is only right for us to look at whether dangerous cyclists should face the same consequences.

“We’ve seen the devastation that reckless cycling and driving can cause, and this review will help safeguard both Britain’s cyclists and those who share the roads with them.”

The review, which will seek to improve all elements of cycle safety, will be in two phases, with the conclusions of the first phase are expected to be reported in the New Year.

Audience members will help track down Dickens, Frankenstein and even Boudicca, who have gone rogue around the streets of Blackfriars.

Simon Ryninks, director of Milo Wladek Co., the company which created the production, said: “This is a sprawling, brilliantly bonkers and very fun promenade performance. We can’t wait to be let loose on Blackfriars!”

The spectators are taken into this bonkers world by a wayward sci-fi plot, which will give intrepid people a unique virtual adventure through this historical part of Southwark.

The show won’t include any actual virtual reality, but will create the illusion

of technology through use of innovative costumes, puppetry and other effects.

The designers have been inspired by the likes of Pokemon Go and Minecraft to bring the history of the Blackfriars area alive.

Mr Ryninks added: “For Virtually Blackfriars we’re creating a real-life virtual reality experience, bringing to life the extraordinary history of the area.

We are working with local schools and

community groups to create extraordinary puppets and costumes that will form the foundation of our handmade virtual world.”

Virtually Blackfriars has been created as part of the annual Blackfriars Stories programme which aims to celebrate the local area’s heritage. The shows have been commissioned by Southwark Presents and will be taking place on the 19 to 21 of October.

“Lewisham, like much of London, has been left behind by the Tories and their pro-Brexit, austerity agenda,” he said.

“That is why it is so important that we

have a Labour mayor to protect the most vulnerable and fight to ensure we all have a stake in Lewisham’s future.

“But whatever the Tories may throw at us, Lewisham’s greatest asset is our strong community.

“I care deeply about our diversity and tolerance and will always make sure Lewisham is an open and welcoming home for everyone.”

Cllr Archer said: “I congratulate Damien on his selection as the Labour candidate and look forward to debating the future of our borough with him

ahead of next year’s election.

CPR advice for Millwall fans

BERMONDSEY: Millwall will become the first club in England to promote a public cardiac awareness campaign this weekend.

The club’s Heart4MoreFoundation will mark World Heart Day on Saturday, September 30, by teaching fans how to perform CPR. The foundation was set up by former Lion Academy graduate Tobi Alabi after he suffered a cardiac arrest at the age of just nineteen.

A marquee will be set up outside The Den during Millwall’s home game with Barnsley, where volunteers will train as many fans as possible how to perform CPR. The team at the Heart4MoreFoundation has worked to promote the need for CPR education both in football and the wider community and to highlight how heart conditions are not solely a problem for the elderly or unfit.

On average, fifteen seemingly healthy children lose their lives through cardiac arrest every week in the UK – with over half of those occurring in schools.

We need ‘to turn tide’ on knife crime Sir Simon tells conference

SIR SIMON Hughes called for more to be done to stop the “horrendous and unacceptable” gun and knife attacks plaguing places like Southwark, at the Lib Dem conference last week.

Speaking at the autumn conference in Bournemouth, former Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP of 32 years Sir Simon recited the borough’s shocking knife and gun crime statistics, as well as the tragic cases of young men who have died as a result.

“On the seventeenth of June 2008, in Tabard Park just yards from his home near London Bridge, fourteen-year-old David Idowu was fatally stabbed through the heart by a boy not much older than him,” he began.

Holding up a copy of the News, Sir Simon said all too often people saw headlines such as the one on the front page of that edition: “I’m going to keep trying to find out who killed my son”.

“This one quoting the mother of sixteen-year-old Mohamed, who was stabbed to death, his mother still pleading for witnesses to come forward to identify the killer on the second anniversary of the death of her son – an aspiring engineer who had the world at

his feet until his life was cut short by a single stab wound to the chest,” he told those gathered.

“I want us to think today not about statistics, but individuals with knives at their throats or in their chests or guns in their ribs.

“Each one of these attacks is horrendous and unacceptable.”

Sir Simon moved a motion to crack down on gun and knife crime, put forward for debate at the conference last week. “When a borough like ours has one of the highest rates of gun and knife crime in London and London has the highest rates in the country we believe we have a duty to reassess what we can do better to turn the tide as urgently as possible,” he said.

Southwark has the third worst crime rate of any London borough overall and tops the list for gun and knife crime.

Student digs plan scaled back

Residents and local Buddhists opposed original application for accommodation

PLANS FOR a student development in Bermondsey Spa have been scaled back in response to residents’ concerns.

CKC Properties and Student Urban Living Bermondsey Ltd have submitted revised plans for the site adjacent to the Buddhist Centre, in Spa Road, where they hope to build a residential student development.

The original pre-application plans proposed an eight-storey building with 206 studio bedrooms, but the final plans submitted to the council have been scaled back to seven storeys, including the ground floor, and 205 rooms.

The amount of green landscaping has also been increased to act as a screen between 11-13 Spa Road and the neighbouring building in response to residents’ concerns.

During a public exhibition earlier this year, concerns were raised over privacy issues, the impact to the Buddhist Centre, traffic and congestion during construction, and the size of the development.

Of the 98 people who attended the

exhibition, 66 completed feedback forms which revealed 46 of those people did not support the principle of building student accommodation in the area.

The neighbouring Buddhists from the Grade II-listed Kagyu Samye Dzong Tibetan Buddhist Centre – built as Southwark’s first public library in 1892 – also feared the development would block out their light and ruin their tranquillity.

The proposed development is for a part four, five, six and seven-storey building with 205 studio bedrooms – five of which will be accessible and 20 of which will be easily adaptable for wheelchair users. The site is currently occupied by West Leigh, a window repair and installation company, in one and two storey buildings which would be demolished to make way for the development. Amenity space would include a social space, a quiet study space, a gym, and external courtyards if plans go ahead. A cycle store for at least 108 cycles would also be provided.

The amenity areas, including the common room, would be subject to a curfew at night, which would be managed by an on-site team.

Ltd, said: “We are delighted to have submitted our planning application for 205 student bedrooms in Bermondsey, an area within five miles of six universities that will help address the huge unmet need for purpose built student accommodation.

“Our plans for much-needed student accommodation will also help to complete Bermondsey Spa’s regeneration and have the added benefit to the community of boosting the local economy.

period and we have made some notable changes in response to the community’s comments by introducing more green landscaping as well as reducing the scale, massing and position of the proposals.

“The proposals are further accompanied by a comprehensive student management plan to ensure the building is a good neighbour.

“It’s only right and proper that developers contribute towards affordable

housing, and now that our application has been submitted and validated, we will have discussions with Southwark Council to agree a sizable and appropriate financial contribution towards affordable housing in the borough.”

Student grave break NUNHEAD CEMETERY was broken into in the small hours of Saturday morning, police have confirmed.

The News received reports that “gothic” themed items such as candles, and strange markings had been discovered the following day.

But Southwark Council said no such items were found by its staff.

Local police told the News that students had forced entry, and were found to be filming in the cemetery.

Southwark Council said the intrusion had not been authorised.

A SOUTHWARK based cancer charity set up by David and Jonathon Dimbleby has raised over £42,000 through a starstudded quiz night event.

Pointless host Alexander Armstrong took on the role of quiz master in ‘The World’s Greatest Quiz’ to raise money for Dimbleby Cancer Care charity.

Loose Women presenter, Jane Moore was a guest at the quiz night, as well as several other celebrity faces including comedian, Jo Brand, The Great British Sewing Bee judge, Patrick Grant and Richmond MP, Ben Elliot. Hosted at Rooms on Regent’s Park, the night included a champagne reception which was followed by a challenging quiz created by the team behind The Weakest Link and Pointless. The night was a success, with over £42,000 being raised for the charity.

The charity is based in Southwark and provides practical and psychological support for people living with cancer in south east London. Set up in 1966 in memory of the broadcaster Richard Dimbleby, the charity is predominantly centred at the Guy’s Cancer Centre in Southwark, and also has a centre in Queen Mary’s Sidcup.

Surgery into flats?

THE QUEEN’S Road Surgery in Peckham could be turned into flats, after a planning application was sent to the council last week.

The applicants hope to turn the doctors’ surgery – which planning documents say had been closed since June 2016 – into three flats for market sale. Use the planning reference code “17/AP/3584” to view the plans on Southwark Council’s planning portal.

ST JAMES Church in Bermondsey is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its reopening this month.

The church, first opened in 1821, is a Grade II* listed building and was closed for several years in the ‘60s because the building had reached a state of disrepair.

The church was given a whole new lease of life when Michael Whinney, Warden of Cambridge University Mission in Bermondsey (now the Salmon Youth Centre) became Vicar of St James. He got involved during the restoration process and brought together a congregation of young people who met in the partially restored south aisle.

The building was fully restored and opened again on the 25 September 1967, and the enthusiasm of the new congregation gave the church community a fresh optimism and

A BANKSIDE pedestrian crossing has been given a vibrant makeover to celebrate this year’s London Design Festival.

The “Colourful Crossings” campaign aims to bring creativity and fun to the streets of Southwark by turning public traffic crossings into works of art.

French-born Thierry Noir, the first ever artist to paint the Berlin Wall, has transformed the Southwark Street crossing with his signature brightly coloured style.

This is the second time a seemingly innocuous public crossing has been turned into a work of art.

In 2016, Camille Walala leant her geometric designs to the crossing and, according to Better Bankside, who commissioned the artwork, nearly 70% people surveyed felt happier as a result and 85% wanted to see more creative projects in the area.

Noir’s design will stay in place for the next year, when a new artist will take over.

The initiative coincides with the London Design Festival, held until September 24.

Empty council homes a disgrace

I READ with interest your article 'Housing Crisis? We've got 4 empty homes on our street', Southwark News, September 20, 2017 about empty council properties in Hayles Street and am glad that John Bailey who lives on the street has brought this to people's attention.

I live on the Sunray Estate, North Dulwich, and over the past few years have seen empty council properties left for months at a time.

A house opposite me was left empty for eighteen months after the elderly resident passed away. A house along the road from me was left empty for six months before a family moved in this year. And since the beginning of March there has been another house in the same road left empty and you can't see the front door or get up the front path because of the hedge overgrowth!

A couple of families came to look at this house when it first became empty, but nothing has materialised and it's just been left to stagnate, attracting rats and the threat of it being vandalised or squatted.

This is an absolute disgrace and agree with John Bailey that given the amount of people on the waiting list it is such a waste.

Let's hope that Southwark Council can get their act together to help ease the housing crisis!

There is no need for postal strike

YOUR READERS may have read about a potential strike at Royal Mail by the

Communications Workers Union (CWU), ‘Fears strike could hit Christmas post’, Southwark News, September 20, 2017.

Our postmen and women have the best pay – and the best terms and conditions – in our industry.

They do an amazing job in all weathers – rain or shine. Average pay is 45-50m per cent above the National Living Wage. None of that is changing. There are just no grounds for a strike.

Previous strikes at Royal Mail meant we let our customers down.

Some of our major rivals today were actually established because of those strikes. There really is no point shooting ourselves in the foot.

So, what’s at issue?

Well, not the great terms and conditions postmen and women have, as I said before. On pay, we have made a very good offer. That follows a 10.8 per cent pay rise in the four years since privatisation.

That compares favourably with the 6.4 per cent UK national average earnings increase over the same period.

On pensions, we know how important pension benefits are to colleagues. Our proposal would be by far the best pension scheme in the industry – and one that benchmarks well to other large employers. Many of our postmen and women are in a Defined Benefit scheme - 63 per cent, in fact, compared to just 6 per cent of workers across the UK private sector.

We do need to change to a different type of Defined Benefit arrangement. That’s because every year - it would cost us at least three times more than the cash we generate just to keep the existing pension open. No business could do that.

and conditions.

We are working hard to keep improving our services to customers in a very competitive industry.

HE UK housing crisis is unprecedented. The number of new homes being built in the UK is too low and the number of genuinely affordable social homes being built with Government funding has dropped by a staggering 95% since the Lib Dem-Tory coalition started in 2010.

In response to the shortage of social housing and the spiralling cost of homes to buy, the number of people renting privately has grown enormously in recent years, many of whom are now living in the private rented sector for the long term, including 1.5 million households with children.

The private rented sector is unfit for purpose, with tenants paying above the odds for lower levels of security and often lower quality accommodation. Private renters spend on average 41% of their income on rent, leaving many struggling to make ends meet. The ending of a private tenancy is now the single biggest cause of new cases of homelessness.

The situation is made much worse by the introduction by the Lib Dem-Tory coalition Government of the local housing allowance cap, which increasingly means that almost no private sector housing is affordable to people on low-to-average incomes in London.

We urgently need wholesale reform of the private rented sector. We need longer, more secure forms of tenure; action to curb spiralling rents and new requirements on the standard of accommodation to make every home fit for human habitation.

In the context of the need for reform, banning letting agents from charging fees to tenants is a vital first step. Those fees are presently completely unregulated, and the letting agents are chosen and appointed by landlords. Many tenants move every six to 12 months, leading to a repeating and unaffordable burden.

The Government must act urgently to address the housing crisis, to invest directly in genuinely affordable social housing and to bring forward low-cost homes for first-time buyers. We need urgent comprehensive reform of the private rented sector to make it fit for purpose and to address the impact of housing insecurity and homelessness on families across the country. Banning letting agents’ fees should be a first step, but there is much more to do.

The woman who helped the poor children of Bermondsey - with the Guild of Play

THE PIONEERING work of Dame Grace Kimmins, who helped transform the lives of children living in Bermondsey’s slums, has been documented in a new book.

“It had a women’s section and the women like Grace were effectively doing social work before social workers were invented, as well as district nursing.”

Dame Grace’s motto was for people to be happy with their lot.

“Grace’s great philosophy that she instilled in the children and disabled was that they needed to be happy in their lot,” Black explained.

“She wasn’t giving them sympathy, she was encouraging them to make the most of what they could do.

“She said ‘other charities will provide the crutches, but we are not a charity, we provide people with a reason to use those crutches’.

“The Guild of the Brave Poor Things taught children handicrafts and held literary societies and showed people how to better themselves despite their disability.”

Dame Grace set up Chailey Heritage as a “prep school for crippled boys” in 1903.

The first boys and girls to attend the school were from Bermondsey. There were health facilities and subsequently fully-equipped hospitals.

Despite meeting her husband Charles Kimmins and later moving to Chailey, Dame Grace’s work in Bermondsey spanned 40 years.

Grace Kimmins and her Chailey Heritage by Ros Black will be published on October 12.

A pageant at the Guild of Play & Guild of the Brave Poor Things

Dame Grace is probably best known for Chailey Heritage – a special school set up in Sussex in 1903 for physically disabled children.

But a large part of her early work was spent at the Bermondsey Settlement, run by the Reverend John Scott Lidgett, which changed the lives of many living in the area’s slums in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Dame Grace, born in Sussex in 1870, first worked for the West London Mission as a Sister of the People before moving on to work at the settlement in 1895.

It is there she met political and social activist Ada Salter (who went on to become one of the first women councillors in London, the first Labour councillor in Bermondsey, and the mayor of Bermondsey in 1922), with whom she later shared a flat in Cherry Gardens Street, off Jamaica Road.

Author Ros Black, whose new book Grace Kimmins and her Chailey Heritage captures Dame Grace’s early life and work, said the two women had a “tremendous amount” in common.

“Ada was more politically minded but they shared an interest in open spaces and beautifying the environment,” she said.

“Grace’s interest was in children and play; she felt every child had the right to play, especially the girls in the slums who had a hard life because they were doing women’s work before they even reached puberty.

“She set up the Guild of the Brave Poor Things for the disabled and the Guild of Play so girls had the chance to do more traditional songs and dances – and they had big pageants in Bermondsey.”

Black, who lives just a few miles from Chailey Heritage, said the Bermondsey Settlement was for “educated people with a social conscience” who wanted to put something back into the community.

The main Bermondsey Settlement house was located in Farncombe Street.

“In the late 1800s, if you were disabled you weren’t able to contribute to the family income and therefore were a burden and regarded as a bit of an outcast,” said the 63year-old, who used to run a special needs housing association.

“The Bermondsey Settlement provided a lot of educational opportunities and people were encouraged to come in and even work towards taking exams and

The LIONESSES came from behind to win their first FA Women’s Super League fixture of the season at St Paul’s last weekend.

Visitors Watford took the lead took the lead just five minutes through Simona Petkova, but from that point on the Lionesses dominated and got their reward when Billie Brooks smashed home a header following a perfectly weighted corner 20 minutes in.

Millwall went in front just before halftime as Leanne Cowan made a run through the away defence to get on the

end of a pass and calmly slot home.

The home side took the momentum into the second half and it was 3-1 on the hour when Ellie Mason smashed an effort against the bar but Ella Rutherford was there to convert from close range.

It should have got worse for Watford when Megan Wynne was fouled in the penalty area, but Rianna Dean failed to convert from the spot.

However, it was all but over when Laura May Walkley saw red for a challenge on Leigh Nicol. The Lionesses easily saw out the final ten minutes of the match and claimed the win to take up to Doncaster for their meeting with the Belles next week.

Lionesses coach Lauren Phillips said: “Nothing is a given in this league. It's very important for us to get off to a good start, especially at home, and to build on the progress we made last season, giving us momentum going into next week’s game against Doncaster.

STANSFELD DEPARTED from this year’s FA Vase under a cloud, after a number of controversial decisions went against them last weekend.

The game started in bright and sunny conditions and it wasn't even five minutes old when Saltdean were reduced to ten men.

Carew cuts down Harrow

ASHLEY CAREW struck a brilliant free-kick nine minutes from time to give Dulwich Hamlet their second win in four days to see them rise to fifth place in the Isthmian League Premier Division table.

Hamlet were under pressure for much of the game at Harrow, though the visitors were always dangerous on the break.

In the fourteenth minute, Carew combined with Nyren Clunis to set up a chance for Muhammadu Faal, but he shot over the bar. Marc Weatherstone then headed Carew’s corner off target, before Quade Taylor crossed for Dumebi Dumaka who nodded wide. Gavin Rose’s side had a close escape just after the break when stopper Preston Edwards was

beaten by a deflected cross but the ball hit the post before Dulwich cleared.

Just when it seemed they would have to settle for a point, Nana Boakye-Yiadom was fouled and Carew stepped up to curl a free-kick over the wall. Harrow poured forward late on, and were almost caught on the break but Nathan Ferguson couldn’t finish after racing clear from halfway.

Last weekend, 1,752 fans at Champion Hill saw Hamlet hammer Leatherhead 40 with two goals from Faal and one each from Clunis and Kenny Beaney.

DESPITE THE 2016/17 football season ending in May which saw the Millwall first team triumph in the League One Play Off Final and gain promotion to the EFL Championship, work at grassroots level at Millwall Community Trust continued to have a massive impact in the local community.

The summer kicked with a MEMORABLE Millwall Premier League Kicks Graduation match.

Over many years, the Kicks programme has seen many of its participants progress onto a SUCCESSFUL professional football careers or have signed for professional football academies across the country. As a celebration of the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme, some of it’s very best INITIAL GRADUATES took part in a match against the programmes second generation participants, held at St Paul’s Sports Ground in Rotherhithe, the home of SCEFL FIRST DIVISION side Fisher FC and WSL Millwall Lionesses.

Victor Borode, a former Kicks participant who now coaches on the programme said: “Kicks has been brilliant. We used to go to the programme as kids and it’s good to see everyone come back together. The programme kept us engaged as kids. It was like a home away from home which is the same environment we want to create for the young people that attend now.”

A Summer of Millwall Premier League Kicks

Tiptree, Colchester United and now signed to East Thurrock commented: “Kicks has been very big for me in regards to it being free and how often it was. I had the pleasure of playing in a young session and the older session. The chance to play in structured football session with older boys and getting the chance to play around different people was good.

It gave me a lot of confidence.

Maybe there would be things I wouldn’t do on a Saturday for my team that I could try at Kicks and then take into a game.’

Kicks Community Development Officer Gerry Otim who also attended the programme as a child said of the day: “It was great to see so many old faces altogether for this big footballing festival. The purpose of it was to celebrate the success of former Kicks participants that have either gone onto have careers at professional or semi-professional level or have since become coaches for the Community Trust. All ARE deemed as massive successes in our eyes and is something we are extremely proud of. To have 13 coaches that used to attend the programme now coaching and mentoring the current crop of young people is a big INDICATION of the Trusts belief in investing in young people.

The day was to showcase success and talent, which it certainly did.”

During July, PARTICIPANTS FROM Millwall Community Development PROGRAMMES PAID a visit to the Rennie Estate in Bermondsey for their annual fun day, with the aim of bringing the local community CLOSER

together. The day WAS led by the Chair of Rennie Estate TRA Michael Facey. The day involved free food including a BBQ, drinks, music, face painting, bouncy castle, bungee jumping. Millwall club mascots Zampa The Lion and Bolina also made a surprise visit to the fun day.

Sunday 5th of July saw the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme welcome Arsenal in The Community to the St Pauls COMMUNITY Sports Ground for a friendly fixture between the two CLUB'S girls' sessions. The MILLWALL girls' session called Bellingham Kickstars PL Kicks began in October 2016 initially ORGANISED by The Rio Ferdinand Foundation with the initiative of engage more women and girls in playing football and to offer inclusive skills coaching as well as regular matches against other community groups and football clubs. Millwall Premier League Kicks programme were then approached to work in collaboration with the Rio Ferdinand Foundation to help with the running of the session. The day was hugely successful with all the GIRLS thoroughly enjoying playing in great facility.

The beginning of August saw the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme host a summer football tournament for the 12-15 age group. The aim of the tournament was to bring young people from across Southwark, Lewisham and beyond TO a festival of football, competing against one another in a competitive but friendly

environment. The tournament saw over 200 young people attend and take part with the winners on the day being a team full of young people local to Rotherhithe who called themselves ‘All Stars’. The winners on the day were delighted and said of the day: “We are really happy to have won today’s Millwall Kicks tournament. The opportunity to play in a free football tournament in such a nice stadium was great too. There were so many other kids too which shows how well run the tournament was.

Hopefully, there will be more in the future.”

TWO weeks later saw the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme host their second big summer football tournament targeting the 16-19 age group which again was held at the St Pauls COMMUNITY Sports Ground. The tournament saw over 100 young people from Southwark, Lewisham and beyond travel into Rotherhithe for the day which was fiercely competitive AND played in a GREAT SPIRIT. The winners on the day were a team from Bellingham that attend the Friday Night Millwall Kicks session held at the Bellingham Leisure and Lifestyle Centre in Catford. Prince Amoh, captain of the team on the day said: “It was great to be able to win today's tournament. It helped that the weather was good and the stadium is nice to play inside. The tournament was great fun and we were really happy to have TAKEN PART today.’

The following week saw young people from the Millwall Premier League Kicks sessions at Bells

Gardens and Cossall Park treated to a trip to North London to take part in a football tournament with the Arsenal Kicks programme. The day was a great success with Millwall Community Trust continuing to build on their great relationship with Arsenal in The Community.

To close off the summer, participants from the free Saturday morning Millwall Premier League Kicks session held at the St Paul's Sports Ground for 8-11 year olds were given free tickets to the EFL Championship match between Millwall AND Norwich City for regularly attending the session, which began in May. IT WAS A GREAT DAY FOR THE YOUNG PEOPLE AS Millwall ran out as four nil WINNERS. One of the participants, who had previously never been to a football MATCH was delighted to have attended the game: “The game was really good. There was loads of goals and Millwall won. I want to go to more matches.”

Defender: Home form is crucial this season weekend for the first time since the Tykes’ 3-1 win in the 2015-16 League One play-off final.

The Lions won promotion a year later, and have looked comfortable in the Championship this season.

Millwall have tightened up defensively since Jordan Archer’s

mistake and a number of defensive blunders helped Ipswich to a 4-3 win at The Den last month.

Hutchinson thinks Millwall’s home form will crucial to their final league standings.

“The Den has been rocking this season, it’s been really good and the

fans have stepped up,” Hutchinson said. “Any time we’ve played there they’ve helped us get results. They’ve been brilliant.

“We bounce off each other. Against Leeds we played really well on the day and when you’ve got that support behind you with the noise, it puts you on another level.

“It’s quite intimidating for other teams and really drives us on.

“The manager always talks about game management. After the Ipswich defeat we’ve controlled games better and been really good.

“That Ipswich game really hurt us.

We all made mistakes but we bounced back from that. To come back from that is testament to the character of the squad.

“Clean sheets for Jordan is only going to be good for his confidence, same with the back four.

“It’s not just the back four and the goalkeeper, it’s the whole team. The midfield work so hard, so do the two up top. Whenever we get a clean sheet I don’t take full credit, other people deserve it as well.

“We knew this league wasn’t going to be easy. Some days we are a little bit more direct and get results, some days we do play more with the football. We can speed up the game or slow it down, depending on how things are going.

“When teams looked at footage of us at the start of the season it probably didn’t mean a lot but now they will be saying, ‘listen boys, we’re in for a tough game’.

“Teams are going to have to work hard against us. We’re not going to let teams have points off us easily. We’re going to fight for every single point throughout the season and at The

Den, when it’s bouncing, it’s going to be crucial for us. It’s going to be vital in terms of where we’re going to finish this season.

“We know when we turn up there’s a good chance we’re going to get three points. But it’s the ones when you don’t perform: can you keep a clean sheet, can you nick a 1-0?

That’s vitally important in this league.

“Bristol City away, Preston away, QPR was a bit different, but points away from home keeps it ticking over. It keeps the confidence high.”

Hutchinson is an admirer of Barnsley, who, like Millwall, are not in a position to splash out millions of pounds on players.

“They went up and kept a lot of their squad,” Hutchinson said. “It shows that when you’ve got a good squad they don’t need to be worth millions.

If everyone is fighting for the right cause and believes in the right way to play it can be really effective.

“I’d rather be part of a squad that is together and can grind out results than be alongside someone worth £6million who just wants to play their own game.”

Millwall will hope to dominate Barnsley on Saturday, and Hutchinson admits he enjoys playing in a direct and physical side.

“I prefer playing in a side that gets the ball forward and plays in their half, picking up second balls, rather than pass, pass, pass, pass.

“We’ve shown we can be effective playing the way we do.

“It doesn’t really matter what kind of team you’re facing, though.

Whether you’re up against a side that likes to pass it, or a physical, direct side, if you don’t turn up you’re going to be for a long day.”

Lions dig Deep for Preston point Preston 0-0 Millwall

MILLWALL ROLLED up their sleeves and left Championship high-flyers Preston with a hardearned point after a brilliantly battling afternoon at Deepdale.

The match was no classic but the way the Lions got stuck in and frustrated Preston proved again that there is plenty of heart in Neil Harris’ squad and few draws on the road this season will impress him more than this one.

It was not a day for quality or flair, it was a day for a strong back-four, a committed midfield and plenty of running and while Millwall looked

drab in attack, they were superbly united in their quest to keep a clean sheet.

Preston started this match fourth in the Championship, they had lost one in eight and at both ends of the field they have been on top form recently, conceding only three goals all season and not having lost at home since April.

But those stats meant little against a Millwall side that fought from start to finish.

Byron Webster and Shaun Hutchinson knew they were in for a long afternoon as Tom Barkhuizen, Sean Maguire and the highly-rated Jordan Hugill tried to probe Millwall’s backline but there was no way through.

On ten minutes George Saville had a chance before Steve Morison blasted

the rebound wide.

Five minutes later, Jordan Archer did well to palm a Barkhuizen shot around the post during a match that was becoming increasingly niggly and tense, summed up by Conor McLaughlin’s crunching tackle on Josh Harrop that saw him somehow escape a booking.

As the half-hour mark approached, Preston seemed to find another gear and Fred Onyedinma remained the Lions’ only real outlet.

Just before the break, Maguire squandered a great chance for Preston as he blasted wide from only eight yards out.

In the second half, Preston again saw more of the ball as Millwall looked to dig in and emerge with at least a point.

McLaughlin cleared one Harrop effort just inches from the goal-line while Barkhuizen continued his battle with Webster and Hutchinson.

The Lions' commitment and strength at the back was always in evidence, though going forward Millwall did not offer their travelling support much to cheer about as Morison and Shane Ferguson – who replaced Odenyinma after 55 minutes – saw little of the ball.

But they, along with everybody else dressed in black, ran themselves into the ground in search of a positive result.

Saville went close again but his flicked volley from six yards out following good build-up play from Williams ended up going over the crossbar.

The pressure mounted at the other end during the final stages as Preston pushed harder and harder for a winner but, again, Millwall stood firm.

One Lions shout for a penalty when a Jed Wallace effort was blocked in the box was waved away but most of the action was at the other end where Webster, Hutchinson, McLaughlin and Archer all proved unbeatable.

O’Brien’s first sending off indicated ‘a desire to win’

AIDEN O’BRIEN admits he got a bit of stick in the dressing room after the first red card of his career – but says his sending-off at Wolves was a product of his desire to win.

O’Brien was dismissed for two yellow cards at Molineux earlier this month, but Neil Harris brought him straight back into the side and was rewarded when the attacker got the winner against Leeds United.

Millwall’s second red card of the season came in the game following the defeat to Wolves, Lee Gregory sent off after a collision at QPR. Gregory is available again after serving a three-game ban, and O’Brien explained it’s all part of a learning process this season.

“I just really wanted to win that game,” he said. “These days I’m always hyped up and psyched up. In every game you play if you don’t give everything, it will show.

“You’ve got to be at 100 per cent and that tackle the ball was tapped away from me and was rolling towards one of their players and I had to go for it. I’m not good at challenges, I never really do it so it was worthy of a red card!

“The boys gave me a bit of stick but we’re a team and we all support each other. Lee Gregory got a red card but he’s back and it’s all a learning curve.

“It was the first red of my career. It wasn’t nice walking off, but you learn from it.”

O’Brien’s red card was probably also a result of the expectation on Millwall wingers to try to win the ball back when possession is lost and not shirk defensive duties.

“We all know what we’re doing from front to back. We just need to stay disciplined as individuals and do our jobs,” O’Brien said. “If we do that that to the best of our ability

we’ll keep goals out of our net.

“As wingers in this team we have defensive responsibilities as much as we are expected to produce going forward as well. We can’t just concentrate on attacking all the time because, away from home especially, we will be on the back foot.

“We rely on the counter attack. Me and Jed [Wallace] know our responsibilities, we know what we have to do. We’re suited to this team.”

O’Brien has formed a new partnership on the left flank this season with James Meredith.

He explained how the pair combine on the pitch, and his role when Millwall lose the ball if George Saville and Shaun Williams are out of position.

“As a wide man I’m more of an unpredictable, tricky, what’s-hegoing-to-do-next kind of player,” O’Brien said. “I go inside most of the time which enables James to run outside. It’s a good mix. He’s obviously explosive going wide, I go inside and we’ve got a good understanding.

“Hopefully we can put that into practice more and more. At the moment not a lot is getting down our side, we’re solid there.

“If I’ve run into the box to try to get onto a cross and we lose the ball, I’ll run back through the middle to try and take George’s place or Willo’s place and they’ll fill in for me. It’s not ‘get back to your position’, it’s filling in and helping out.

“We work hard on it on the training ground but it’s also kind of natural instincts. If the move breaks down and I can’t get out wide and help get the ball back one of the central midfielders will push across. I’ll fill their space and once the play stops or the ball goes out of play we’ll switch back into our normal positions.

“It’s about covering for each other

Star receives dream call-up

AIDEN O’BRIEN believes he can make an impact at international level after receiving his first senior call-up this week.

O’Brien, 23, was named in Martin O’Neill’s provisional Republic of

O’Brien is enjoying the new environment in the Championship this season, including playing in front of far bigger crowds than Millwall have been used to in the last two years.

O’Brien said: “Most of the stadiums in this league are big stadiums. It’s nice to travel to big grounds in front of big crowds, it’s what it’s all about really.

“We’re all embracing it but we’re not allowing it to affect anything we’re doing on the pitch. We’re all focused and we always try to give 100 per cent to what we do.

“During the week our focus is on trying to make the game work in our favour. That means listening to the manager and the staff and then influencing the game on the Saturday or the Tuesday.

“We’re doing well at the moment. I can actually see us doing good things this year.”

Next up is Barnsley on Saturday, the first meeting of the sides since the 2016 League One play-off final, which the Tykes won 3-1.

The Lions seem to have benefitted from an extra season in the third tier, though O’Brien isn’t too sure they wouldn’t have made the same impact they have so far this season had they gone up a year earlier.

“Who knows, we could have gone up and got off to a flyer. But now in the present and immediate future, we’ve come into this league a strong outfit. We have the ability and work ethic to do good things in this league.

“We’ve shown we can give any team in this league a run for their money. We can’t wait to get going in every game.”

Ireland squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Wales next month.

That makes it six Millwall players currently in senior international squads, including Jordan Archer (Scotland); Conor McLaughlin, Shane Ferguson and George Saville (Northern Ireland); and Kris Twardek (Canada).

O’Brien qualifies through his

grandparents and has represented the country at under-17, under-19 and under-21 level.

He said: “The manager (Neil Harris) mentioned it in an interview recently, they were kind words from him which was nice,” he said. “I always tune in with my family, we’re big supporters. Nan and granddad were fully Irish.

“I believe in myself and that I could produce at that level.”

Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill, meanwhile, revealed he only

recently became aware of Saville’s eligibility.

The midfielder’s grandmother was born in Northern Ireland.

“I went and watched George on Saturday for Millwall against Preston. He's a player with considerable Championship experience at the age of 24,” O’Neill said.

“He is a player who is proven at Championship level at just 24, he’s keen to be involved and we’re delighted to have him in.”

GEORGE SAVILLE capped a superb week by scoring two brilliant late goals as Millwall came from behind with ten minutes left to beat Reading 2-1 on Tuesday night.

Dave Edwards headed Reading in front in the 73rd minute against the run of play as an unambitious Reading scored from just their second effort on target.

The Lions got a deserved equaliser seven minutes later when Saville headed in Shaun Williams’ corner for his third goal of the season.

And Saville – on the day he was called up to the Northern Ireland squad for the first time – got his fourth five minutes from the end, beating Vito Mannone from the edge of the box with a vicious drive.

It was Millwall’s third win in a row at home and arguably the most impressive of the three, given how late they conceded having been on the front foot for most of the game.

Royals boss Jaap Stam was critical of fans after the 1-1 draw at home to Hull at the weekend, in contrast to the positivity around south Bermondsey after victories over Norwich City and Leeds United. Royals fans thought they would be making the trip home having plundered the points, but by the end The Den was bouncing again after Saville’s match-winning performance lifted Millwal up to twelfth in the table.

Saville and Williams had been Millwall’s most impressive performers, winning the ball back and producing a number of moments of real quality in midfield.

But Millwall had struggled further forward, before Saville came to the

rescue with time threatening to run out.

His first goal was a header that he looped back over goalkeeper Mannone and into the far corner.

“On the training field we go through set-plays before games,” Saville said.

“We have a lot of variation on the corners. Today there had been a few corners and there was nothing really working so we tried my one round the back.

“We have quite a few to be fair and it worked out quite nicely.”

That squared it, after Reading had gone ahead when Edwards was left unattended to power in Sone Aluko’s corner.

“From our side it was sloppy to concede from a set-play given how solid we have been all season,” Saville said.

“We work hard on set-plays, shape, discipline and for us that’s a sloppy goal to concede.”

Saville’s second was a cracking drive, as he latched onto a loose ball outside the box before brilliantly controlling a wicked shot that gave Mannone no chance.

“We do a lot of work on shooting,” Saville said. “Livers (Dave Livermore) takes that with us. We work hard every day as a team and do individual bits. If I can chip in with goals to help the team that’s what I want to do.

“The character we showed to come back and score two goals with maybe 20 minutes left or whatever, it’s credit to the team.”

Stam felt his side had coped well with Millwall’s threat before the equaliser.

“We knew when we came over here it was not going to be easy, we expected them to play like this,” he said. “A lot of balls up front, battles in the air and for second balls.

“When they go forward and play these balls into the box it’s a threat but they didn’t create chances.

“Then you get a corner and you’re 1-0 up and hoping that they stick to what they’ve been doing and maybe even score a second one.

“When they have a little bit of time on

the ball and put it in the box we need to be aware of their physicality. That’s their strength, that’s what they try to do and they succeeded.”

Earlier, Millwall had been the better side in the first half without really properly testing Mannone.

Jordan Archer – one of six Lions players to be called into senior international squads this week – saved well from Roy Beerens, but later Garath McCleary fired well over when he found some rare space behind Millwall’s midfield.

Millwall’s confidence was illustrated especially by Shaun Hutchinson, who on a couple of occasions played the ball confidently out of defence. One of Millwall’s most threatening moments originated through the defender, the ball eventually worked wide to Jed Wallace who whipped in a low cross that hit a defender before bouncing wide off Fred Onyedinma.

Onyedinma had a difficult afternoon on Saturday against Preston, and though he and Morison were closely watched

by Reading’s back three, Onyedinma eventually produced a decisive moment when he won the corner from which Saville scored.

Reading hadn’t really looked like scoring before their goal. Just before half-time, though, Conor McLaughlin had to be on his toes to block Beerens’ shot. Onyedinma then failed to connect after Wallace had pulled the ball back from the by-line.

games here and the game lacked flow.

Reading were playing conservatively, Aluko battling alone up front against a Millwall defence that was relatively comfortable. Aluko had to do it all himself to win one corner, but it was typical of Reading’s lack of potency that it was hit to the edge of the box where Aiden O’Brien cleared.

It seemed the lack of a striker on the bench would prove decisive as Millwall tried to win the game, with Lee Gregory serving the last game of his three-match ban and Tom Elliott injured.

Lions boss Neil Harris tried to vary his attack by ordering Wallace and O’Brien to switch flanks, but that didn’t have the immediate desired effect as O’Brien’s cross was too close to Mannone.

It was a game set up to be decided by a set-piece, though the smart money was on Millwall making the breakthrough.

With just seventeen minutes left, however, it was Aluko again getting through the hard work to win a corner.

He struck it himself, swinging the ball into the box where Edwards rose to plant a header past Archer.

In a game of so few real chances, it looked like that would be the winner.

But Millwall deserve huge credit for the way they turned it around.

Reading piled forward in injury-time, and Archer and McLaughlin blocked at the feet of Paul McShane.

That was the last chance as Reading, like Millwall last year, find themselves struggling at the start of the season after losing a play-off final.

Next up for Millwall is Barnsley at home on Saturday, and Saville is determined to continue his excellent form.

He said: “At Wolves I didn’t get the regular football I wanted. Here I’ve got the opportunity to play a lot of football. It’s in my hands what I do with this season. I just need to keep working hard and that comes on the training field.

“Hopefully I can get more goals and most importantly get Millwall success and get up the table.”

Saville hits brilliant brace after Northern Ireland call

GEORGE SAVILLE was in dreamland on Tuesday night – after hitting a stunning brace on the day of his first international call-up as Millwall came from behind to beat Reading.

Saville struck twice in the last ten minutes as Millwall won their third successive league game at home to move up to twelfth in the Championship.

Saville, 24, spoke to Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill last week after O’Neill discovered his family links. The Lions midfielder’s late grandmother, Patricia, was born in Enniskillen in County Fermanagh

where Saville used to visit as a youngster.

Saville was one of six Millwall players named in international squads this week, with Aiden O’Brien also called up by the Republic of Ireland for the first time.

Northern Ireland are guaranteed second place behind Germany in Group C of World Cup qualifying, meaning Saville could be heading for Russia next summer if they win a playoff tie.

“It’s been a fantastic week for me and my family. I got the news about Northern Ireland, which was a proud moment, and then it was great to get three points against Reading,” Saville said.

but we thought it was the right time now. I’ve been playing regular football for Millwall, and the manager (O’Neill) has found out about it and decided it was the right time to put me in the squad. One of the guys from the IFA rang me to speak about the eligibility and stuff, and the manager rang me last week and seemed keen for me to go.

“I’m obviously very excited. It’s a great opportunity for me to go and play international football.”

Saville will join Conor McLaughlin and Shane Ferguson in the squad.

Saville was keen to recognise his club form this season was key to his call-up.

He said: “Without Millwall the opportunity for international football doesn’t come along. The manager, Livers (Dave Livermore) and all the backroom staff have put their faith in me to perform.

“Hopefully I’m performing week-in, week-out for them and the football club.

“We’ve a very good squad here, very good individuals. I feel the team is coming together quite nicely, we’re picking up results, putting in performances where people had been writing us off before the game had even started.

“There are a lot of individuals that can go on to the international scene.”

HUTCH EYES LONG-TERM LIONS STAY

SHAUN HUTCHINSON believes Lions boss Neil Harris has “built something a bit special” at the south London club.

Millwall have adapted to life in the Championship, and face Barnsley – who defeated them in the 2016 League One play-off final – on Saturday.

Hutchinson, 26, is pleased with how the season is going, and is looking to stay at Millwall for the long term.

He said: “There’s an option in my contract. I’m really enjoying my time here. I had a good pre-season and when you go into the season with that it puts you in good stead. If you don’t get that you’re always playing catch-up.

“I believe that the gaffer has built something a bit special here with his recruitment.

“I think every single player here would say the same thing. We’re all on the same wavelength. Everyone wants to play for him, everyone is happy here.

“When you have that combination it’s written to have success. I’m certainly enjoying it.

“If you’re coming in just to survive in this league you’re going to set yourself up to fail.

“Even now we think about the points we have dropped. We do feel we could be higher up the league. I don’t see why we can’t push on.”
