THE GRIEVING sister of Bermondsey’s ‘gentle giant’ – whom she last heard from almost 28 years ago – has publicly thanked his friends for paying for her brother’s funeral.

A desperate search for Gomer Roberts’ family was launched last May, after the popular local was found dead aged 53 in his room above a Peckham pub.

His Bermondsey friends finally clubbed together and raised money so that he wouldn’t have a pauper’s funeral, after their search proved fruitless...

NHS tax loophole flies in the face of government drive

T

HE GOVERNMENT is under fire for cutting funding to health services, yet somewhat bizarrely, it has created a tax loophole that allows NHS Trusts to save on VAT. Why?

Is it because NHS Trusts are on their knees with soaring demand and the government’s insistence on a seven day NHS? So by giving a sop such as this, it takes a bit of heat out of the funding debate? Or is it ideologically-driven? Yet another part of the NHS that falls into private sector hands.

Certainly it isn’t for the benefit of staff - as we report this week, King’s College Hospital staff fear that the trust’s tax-saving ‘privatisation’ scheme could undermine their pensions and cut maternity-leave pay.

King’s deny this.

KCHT will apparently save £7million from their VAT bill by transferring the procurement staff, technicians and health care assistants to a private subsidiary company ‘KCH Interventional Facilities Management’ - and who wouldn’t try to make a saving of this magnitude?

Documents seen by this paper also suggest that the scheme will free up clinical staff from ‘managing supply chain activities’ to spend more time on patient care and improving the quality of services. Why this should be so, it doesn’t say - and King’s made no mention of this in their response to us. It would be interesting to learn how outsourcing procurement to a private, taxsaving company helps in this regard.

You can’t blame NHS Trusts for searching for each and every saving possible. But it does sit somewhat uncomfortably with a public-funded organisation seeking tax loopholes through private subsidiaries - not to mention the inconsistency of a government that has vowed to ensure that organisations large or small pay their fair share of taxation.

Railing against the wind?

A

NOTHER YEAR, another campaign to bring rail or tube travel to Camberwell - forgive us for wondering just how far down the tracks this latest proposal will go.

Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman and Dulwich and West Norwood colleague Helen Hayes have written to the government, asking for a meeting to discuss re-opening the Camberwell rail station.

It’s a commendable idea, and with a huge hospital round the corner serviced only by Denmark Hill, of course makes much sense. But just as with the discussion to extend the Bakerloo line, you have to fear that it will be ignored both by TfL and central government.

And isn’t it a shame that Ms Harman didn’t champion this idea when her party was in power - rather than write to the government as an opposition MP without the clout she once enjoyed in Whitehall?

A NUNHEAD woman has recalled a “bizarre” trip to a Kent safari park, which ended with her and her partner hiding in public toilets from an escaped cheetah.

It was nearing the end of an enjoyable day at the Port Lympne Wild Animal Park when Alice Stittle, her partner, and their two friends’ were returning to the car park.

“We actually thought everything was fine. We had been watching the monkeys get fed and were walking towards the exit, past the rhinos,” said Alice, 33.

Then out of nowhere came a zoo keeper yelling at everyone to “grab your kids now”.

“I thought they were just making a big deal of getting us out of the park,” she said, but it turned out one of the park’s cheetahs had escaped its enclosure, and was on the prowl.

“The nearest place to run to was the toilets.

“We all just suddenly ran to the ladies’ loos.

“It was bizarre. We didn’t really register what was going on and then we all looked at each other.

“The kids thought it was the most exciting thing.

“We kept poking our heads out of the toilet and there were people in the disabled toilets hiding.”

A statement from Port Lympne has estimated the young male cheetah, named Kitwana, was on the loose for 25 minutes, but was teased to its enclosure with a chicken.

When staff gave the all-clear, Alice said she saw “all these other people emerging” out of other toilets and places around the park.

“It was just the strangest experience, but we had a really fun day anyway,” the freelance journalist added.

The photo Alice provided to the News was one she had posted on Twitter while they were hiding in the loos.

A statement published on the zoo’s website by animal director Adrian Harland said: “The cheetah was calm and pacing the enclosure fence looking to get back in.

“Some food was thrown into the enclosure and the cheetah walked back in to get it. No vet intervention was needed.

“He only climbed out to get back with his mother after having been separated to stop him eating all her dinner. We have secured the enclosures perimeter fencing to ensure that the cheetah cannot climb out again.”

Jailed after death of man following attack

A GANG of five from Bermondsey and Kennington have been locked up after the unintended killing of a Walworth man whom they thought had mugged an elderly woman.

Leon Dixon, 37; his half-brother Mason Adrien-Dixon, 22; and friend Daniel Murphy, 20; punched, kicked and stamped on the head of Reginald Ofei-Berko in an alleyway in Walworth on August 25.

Mr Ofei-Berko, 25, suffered only minor injuries, but is believed to have died of a heart attack shortly after the assault.

Four men and a woman were originally charged with murder, but the prosecution accepted pleas of manslaughter by Dixon, AdrienDixon and Murphy, on the basis they had not intended to cause grievous bodily harm.

On June 28 last year, Dixon’s 81year-old grandmother was robbed of a gold chain by a tall black man with braided hair in Walworth Road.

Prosecutor Crispin Aylett QC previously said in the trial that no evidence had been found to link Mr Ofei-Berko to the robbery.

But Dixon, his half-brother Adrien-Dixon, and another accomplice, believed Mr OfeiBerko had been the robber.

Two months later on August 25, McDonald spotted the victim by chance in the street in Walworth.

He contacted his cousins, who recruited Murphy, Gillespie and Modhwadia to help carry out surveillance while their revenge attack was carried out.

Mr Ofei-Berko, who had been staying in a hostel for people with mental-health problems, was found lying unconscious in Penrose Street at around 3.05pm. He died in hospital later that day.

The post-mortem found no evidence of brain injury or obvious cause of death.

Although only minor facial injuries could be found on Mr Ofei-Berko, a pathologist concluded that Mr Ofei-Berko suffered a fatal heart attack as a result of concussive-type trauma to the head.

At the time of the killing, Leon Dixon was still on licence for an armed robbery at a travel agents in 2002, for which he was jailed for eleven years with five years’ extended licence.

On Tuesday at the Old Bailey, Dixon was handed a ten year prison sentence, while AdrienDixon and Murphy were each sentenced to eight years.

John Paul Gillespie, 43, had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit affray because of his role in the lead-up to the attack, and was given a twelve month sentence.

Mother-of-three Dipa Modhwadia, 36, had admitted assisting an offender – by driving her partner Leon Dixon away from the scene. She will spend three months behind bars.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion, said the council plans to work with the Camden Society to “develop a community hub for people with disabilities”, following a meeting on Tuesday (March 14).

Police hunt continues for man who was beaten and bundled into a car BERMONDSEY

MYSTERY STILL surrounds a man who was seen to be viciously beaten and bundled into a car in Bermondsey.

The victim, a black male, believed to be aged in his twenties, was seen to be kicked and punched by two black males, also described as in their twenties.

He was then shoved into what was believed to be a grey/silver coloured two-door car.

This car was joined by a dark coloured car. Both cars then drove off

towards Bevington Street. Each car contained two males in addition to the victim.

A member of the public alerted the police to the incident in Wilson Grove, off Jamaica Road, at about 7.45pm on Monday, March 13.

A police hunt for the victim and the other men involved is still ongoing.

Officers are studying CCTV footage and say “a number of inquiries are in hand”.

Death in street ‘not suspicious’

The man, believed to be in his 60s, collapsed and died near Times Kebab, on Southwark Park Road, on Monday, March 13.

Officers were called at 3.30pm and cordoned off part of the pavement.

Paramedics were also called, and the man was pronounced dead at the

scene.

A police spokesman told the News: “Police were called at approximately 3.30pm on Monday, March 13, to reports of a man collapsed in Southwark Park Road, near the junction with Galleywall Road, SE16. London Ambulance Service attended and the man, believed aged in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“At this early stage, the police are not treating the death as suspicious.”

Police confirmed the man’s next of kin were informed.

The Camden Society has leased both buildings rent-free from the council for a number of years since it was agreed the properties needed renovation work.

One hundred and sixty adults with learning disabilities use the centres, which provide activities and vital

social interaction for some users who say they would otherwise sit at home alone each day.

The lease on the Queen’s Road centre ended on January 31 and the council has deemed the building not fit for purpose.

The council has allowed the charity to continue to operate rent-free until June to allow for the assessments of its 48 users.

The lease on the Riverside centre will end in June and the Camden Society will have until November to leave.

Tallulah Bluebell, aged nineteen, is one of three members of The Truebelles, described as a “feminist girl group”.

Tonight’s episode will air at 9pm on TV channel Lifetime, with judges, models Abbey Clancy and Paul Sculfor, fashion expert Hilary Alexander and photographer Nicky Johnston.

The show sees contestants vie for the top prize of a modelling contract, which could see the winner appear in cosmetics campaigns, and feature on a fashion magazine’s front page.

Tallulah also indulges in painting, enjoys going to exhibitions, and counts herself as a Tracy Emin megafan.

She said she can become “obsessed' with people, and “can't feel normal again” until she has painted them.

Her bio on the Britain’s Next Top Model website adds that she “despises body shaming and backstabbers”. She also attends Brit School, whose alumni includes Adele and Amy Winehouse.

Glassed in ‘homophobic attack’

A YOUNG man had a glass smashed in his face in a Peckham pub, in what Scotland Yard believe was a homophobic attack.

The attack happened on March 5 at the Kentish Drovers, a Wetherspoons pub in Peckham High Street.

Police confirmed they were called at 10.30pm to assist London Ambulance Service paramedics.

The Met Police confirmed that the injured man, aged 23, was taken to a central London hospital for treatment of facial injuries.

There have been no arrests.

they are looking at CCTV footage of the incident.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating an assault on a 23-year-old man at a pub in Peckham High Street.

“Officers and the London Ambulance Service were called on Sunday, March 5 at around 10.30pm to the venue.

“The victim was taken to a central London hospital for treatment for facial injuries after being assaulted with a glass.

“There have been no arrests and enquiries continue. The incident is being treated as a homophobic hate crime.”

THE “CONFUSING road” layout of the new Elephant and Castle junction may have contributed to the death of a young motorcyclist, a court has heard.

Charlie Cooper, 21, was riding through the north side of the junction on his red Honda on March 16, 2016.

He came to a stop in the third lane at a set of traffic lights before the junction with Newington Causeway. Beside him in the far-left lane was Daniel Inwood, riding a blue Honda.

Both men drove on as the lights turned green.

But Mr Cooper (hoping to turn left into Newington Causeway) crossed paths with Mr Inwood, who was travelling clockwise around the bend to New Kent Road.

As they collided at approximately 27mph, Mr Cooper and Mr Inwood slid along the ground for 20 metres.

Both men mounted the pedestrian island beside Newington Causeway.

Mr Inwood told an inquest at Southwark Coroner’s Court on Wednesday last week that Mr Cooper ended up underneath his motorcycle after this collision.

“We got past the London Road turning, and the lights went green,” Mr Inwood said.

“That’s when before I knew it, this other motorcyclist moved straight into the side of me, and it was too late.

“We basically slid along the tarmac. It felt like an eternity but I guess it was only a couple of seconds.”

“I tried to move his bike. It was crushing him,” Mr Inwood said. “I remember rolling up my jacket and using it to support him.”

Paramedics came via air ambulance, and transported Mr Cooper to King’s College Hospital, after starting open-

heart surgery at the roadside.

After desperate attempts to save Mr. Cooper, surgeons judged that the damage to his heart was “irreparable”, and at 5.45pm, the decision was made not to continue to resuscitate.

junction from a roundabout to a bend.

Despite having commuted via the junction “nearly every day” during the redevelopment works, Mr Inwood told the court: “I’m never sure what lane you can use. Some lanes you can use. Some you can’t on a motorcycle.

“Anyone who used [the junction] for the first time would find it confusing.

There was a lot going on and road works still going on when the accident happened.”

Met Police collision investigator Chris Wright also told the Court that Mr Cooper “may have been confused by road markings pointing straight ahead if he had been planning to continue to Newington Causeway”.

The coroner, Sarah Ormond-Walshe concluded that Mr Cooper, of Walton on Thames, died from a road traffic collision, resulting from multiple

injuries.

Mr Cooper’s uncle, Brett Downing, attended the inquest with the young man’s grieving mother, Christine.

After the hearing, Mr Downing described his nephew as a “mildmannered type of person who could look after himself and was selfsufficient in most ways”.

“He was deeply thoughtful, and caring towards other people and his family.

Mr Cooper had recently been travelling in India, and it was said the he had a keen interest in philosophy.

Mr Downing added: “There were two grievances: the loss of my nephew Charlie, and needing to clear his name.

“At the end of the day we have always got a battle to face in mourning Charlie’s death, and we didn’t want to have to drag up old memories from having to go through all of this.”

CHARLIE COOPER’S family and local campaigners, claimed at the hearing that despite Mr Cooper’s death, the dangers that could have contributed to the accident were still present.

Mr Cooper’s uncle, Brett Downing, spoke at the inquest to direct questions to Thomas Holmes, TfL’s senior programme sponsor, whose team oversaw the junction redesign.

Describing the clockwise traffic lights where Mr Cooper and Daniel Inwood were stopped, Mr Downing said: “The ring road clearly indicates traffic is ongoing to the right [to New Kent Road], but there are two arrows saying straight on [to Newington Causeway].”

“I’m just pointing out that confusion still exists. There is traffic still moving from one lane to the other, and the signs do not improve this.”

Mr Holmes responded: “I think the junction is as good as we can get it.

“There is very little more we can do with this layout in this configuration to affect users’ behaviour. I believe any further changes could be detrimental.”

Mr Downing asked whether a 20mph speed limit could be enforced (The two motorcyclists had been travelling at 27mph as they collided).

Mr Holmes replied: “There are plans to introduce them”.

It was also revealed that green signs positioned before the London Road junction – advising drivers which exits to use – were only erected as a result of post-accident audits.

Mr Holmes was unable to disclose whether accidents had decreased after the redesign was completed, because the most recent data was only from June 2016.

To the family’s dismay, the coroner decided against producing a Prevent Future Deaths report, an option for coroners to encourage public bodies to act to prevent similar incident happening in future.

PLAYERS FROM Millwall’s 1964-67 squad will return to the Den for the annual Dockers’ Day this weekend.

This season is the 50th anniversary of the Lions’ record 59-game unbeaten home run that stretched from August 24, 1964 to January 14, 1967.

Now in its tenth year, Dockers’ Day sponsored by the Southwark News celebrates the club's historical links with the dock workers who formed a large part of Millwall's support in days gone by.

Twenty lucky dockers will get a VIP day out, including a presentation medal courtesy of sponsor Southwark News, and the chance to meet the players who have been invited.

The event will take place at the Den on Saturday, March 18, before Millwall play Bury at 3pm.

Residents’ anger over high rise plan for school playground EXCLUSIVE

LOCAL RESIDENTS have accused the council of failing to consult with them over plans to build a six-storey housing development on the site where the Albion Primary School playground used to be.

Consultation about putting flats on the site began in July 2015, but some residents of adjacent Clack Street, Renforth Street and Pump House say they were in the dark about the plans until as late as December 2016.

Residents believe that the council has consulted with governors and parents, rather than people living in the immediate area.

The opposing residents reiterated they understood the need for extra housing, but were against providing it on the school site, for fear it will rob children of play space.

The council argues that the idea to build housing on the Albion Primary site – as part of their 11,000 new homes pledge – has never been a secret and was included in the initial plans for site redevelopment.

They state that they had good uptake of the six consultation events they ran between July 2015 and February 2017.

However, residents state that most people on Clack Street, Renforth Street and the Pumphouse didn’t receive an invite to any consultation until September 2016 at the earliest.

Albion Street Primary School is currently undergoing a major re-build, which will give it a two form building and enable it to take in an extra 420

pupils.

One of the major bones of contention is the fact that the new build – if granted planning permission – will go on the site of the old school playground. The new building’s playground will be on the roof.

Residents argue that this space should have been retained by the school as a play area, rather than being earmarked for flats.

“The kids won’t be able to do proper exercise up on that roof, there’s no space. We’ve got a massive obesity issue already,” said Pump House resident, Nicky Turner. “The playground is like their garden.”

The council, however, has assured residents that the space provided by the school’s new play area was carefully assessed by the Department of Education before being agreed to.

Height is another major concern, with fears the new block will dwarf everything else in the area. “It doesn’t fit with the surroundings,” said Clack Street resident, Nicky Amor.

“It’s going to feel far too big and built up,” said another resident from Clack Street.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said that the council has spent “significant” time consulting on the “exciting new project.”

“We have worked closely with the school to make sure that not only are pupils not losing out but that the new space will be better for them.”

“We know a handful of residents are concerned about the scale of the building and any issues they raise through the planning application process will be considered by our planners.”

Simon hopes to raise £3,000 to send Ruby’s family on a much-needed holiday.

Timi Longman, Ruby’s mum, said the family is thinking of going to either Disneyworld or somewhere in England depending on how far Ruby can travel as she suffered a particular bad seizure in December.

“She had a two-hour seizure on December 7 and went into hospital for thirteen days,” said Timi. “She was really poorly and has gone back to school for three hours a day but even that is making her exhausted.

“She’s not the Ruby we know; she’s

really struggling to drink and isn’t eating well at all and has an NG [nasogastric] tube. “It doesn’t look like she’s going to get back to herself after the seizure.”

“Simon has been amazing, he’s like Ruby’s guardian angel,” Timi added.

Ruby and her family plan to go to the charity event, which will also have a bar and food, face painting, a bouncy castle, and a disco afterwards.

Everyone is welcome to go along to the event. It will be free entry but the organisers have asked for a small donation towards Ruby’s fund.

Camberwell boy Joshua, 16, offered scholarship to Eton CAMBERWELL

THE MOST prestigious school in Britain, Eton College - attended by Princes William and Harry - has offered a scholarship worth over £70,000 to a Camberwell youngster studying his GCSEs.

Sixteen-year-old Joshua Adeyemi, who attends Ark Globe Academy in SE1, was picked out of hundreds of talented applicants – all predicted to bag a catalogue of A*s.

“It’s funny because it all just happened so fast,” Josh said. “My mum was just thanking God and was jumping for joy.

“Between February 6 and 9 I was there to take three tests and do six interviews.

They were all really rigorous. I arrived there and we had an hour to look around, then straight away we were doing a maths exam.”

Just three days after what could have been a humble goodbye to the college, Josh received the “overwhelming” news that the scholarship was his.

“I was ecstatic to say the least,” said Josh. “But I was also a bit gutted because I made friends with other people while I was there, who I know didn’t get the offer, and who I really got on with.”

Ahmed Roble, who moved to the all-boys private school after completing his GCSEs at Walworth Academy, with four A*s, four As and two Distinction* grades.

“Seeing that Ahmed go into Eton after going to a school like mine made me realise it was possible,” He said.

Now all Josh needs to do is seal the deal by getting six As and a Grade 8 in English Language.

TWO SOUTHWARK MPs have stepped up a campaign to reopen Camberwell’s long-abandoned rail station, by writing an open letter to the government.

Helen Hayes (for Dulwich and West Norwood) and Harriet Harman (for Camberwell and Peckham) have shown their letter for transport secretary Chris Grayling to the News.

The letter said: “We are writing to request a meeting to discuss our proposals for the re-opening of Camberwell rail station, which sits on the Thameslink Line between Loughborough Junction and Elephant and Castle…

“The reopening of the station would come as much needed relief to residents of Camberwell, who have suffered from poor transport links for years, especially following the disappointment of the proposal for the Bakerloo Line extension to only serve Old Kent Road, and with the ongoing disruption to Southern Rail services.

“The proposal is supported by nearby King’s College Hospital, which employs thousands of staff, and from whom constraints in local public transport create significant issues in getting staff, patients and visitors to the hospital.”

Ms Hayes and Ms Harman add that former mayor of London Boris Johnson had stated while in office that reopening the station would be possible if timetable changes could be made to accommodate it.

Mr Johnson was asked a question on the matter in a Mayor’s Question time in February last year, in which he said: “Initial feasibility indicates it would be possible to construct a modern station at this location if timetable changes could be made to accommodate an extra stop.”

Southwark Council has also said it hopes to “work with TfL” on reopening the station.

The council’s draft New Southwark Plans – a ten to fifteen-year vision for the borough – said: “The station area would be transformed into a vibrant cluster of small and medium-sized businesses,” making “intensive use” of the railway arches.

Camberwell Station shut its doors to passengers 101 years ago, and has since been reclaimed by nature.

Located on Camberwell Station Road, the station served the mainland City Line from Herne Hill to Farringdon Street when it first opened in 1862. The line also served another long-gone station, Borough Road, in Borough, which also closed in the early-20th century.

Matthew Yates, TfL’s Head of Transport Planning and Projects, said: “We continue to explore options with Southwark Council and Network Rail to potentially reopen Camberwell station on the Thameslink line, but no final decisions have yet been made.”

A Department of Transport spokesman told the News they would not comment until formal plans had been submitted.

The spokesman said: “We are committed to improving access to rail services for passengers and are happy to support proposals for new stations where these are viable and deliver the quality service passengers want.”

Cyclists’ fear over safety while pathway is closed

SOUTHWARK CYCLISTS have accused the council of “knowingly putting cyclists’ lives at risk” by not signposting a safe cycle route while the Surrey Canal Path is closed.

With the path part closed until late March, the “vast majority” of cyclists on this route are now joining the traffic on the bridge on Willowbrook Road in Peckham.

However, doing this means that cyclists have to turn across oncoming traffic and do it partially blind as they can’t see what vehicles are coming over the hump of the bridge.

With safe alternatives via nearby Colegrove Road, Glengall Road and Sumner Road available, SC have lobbied the council to signpost the way – but say they have been met with refusal.

“They should be doing more to keep cyclists safe,” said Sally Eva, SC secretary. “Cyclists’ safety is crucial here.”

They are particularly concerned about ‘novice’ and ‘inexperienced’ cyclists who may suddenly find themselves in the face of heavy oncoming traffic, including buses and HGV lorries.

“The more shocked you are the less confident you are. This is thrusting new, inexperienced cyclists onto a dangerous route,” said Sally.

Billy Clerkin, ex-cycling instructor and SC member, agrees. “This is definitely a dangerous route for inexperienced cyclists. You have to turn across oncoming traffic, partially blind and going up a hill.”

According to SC counts, the Surrey Canal Path via Willowbrook Road carries 750 cyclists an hour during the morning rush hour.

Andy Cadwell, Chair of Southwark Cyclists, said: "It is irresponsible to knowingly allow cyclists to put themselves at risk in this way when there are easy and safe alternatives".

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “We are aware of the concerns raised by Southwark Cyclists although the temporary route was already in use by cyclists prior to the closure. We’ve taken on-board their concerns and installed additional signage on Willowbrook Road to alert drivers to cyclists joining the carriageway on the signed diversion route. As such, the temporary diversion route should not create any additional hazards for cyclists.

Unfortunately, the route suggested by Southwark Cyclists has been reviewed but cannot be adopted without a formal safety audit. The temporary route will be lifted by the end of the month once the Burgess Park works are near completion.”

Facebook group set up for former tenants waiting for water bill rebates Council has made over 31,000 payments since court decision

A FACEBOOK group has been created for former tenants waiting for water bill rebates, following a court judgement that the council’s bill collection deal with Thames Water was illegal.

Former Bermondsey tenant Kelleigh East set up the group, called ‘Former Tenants Still Waiting for Their Water Refunds from Southwark Council’, after realising many of her friends and old neighbours were still waiting to be refunded.

Kelleigh, 37, told the News: “I set up the group because Southwark is taking the mick.

“I have been waiting 28 weeks for my refund. I’m owed about £130, but I have friends who are owed hundreds. I hope people join the group so people can see what’s going on. There could be thousands who could join.

“At the end of the day they have made a mistake and we are the ones suffering. Waiting this long is completely unprofessional. I’ve called the Complaints Department nearly every day, and they keep telling me ‘it will be a few weeks’.”

Around 74,000 current and former

tenants were entitled to rebates after being overcharged on water-service bills between April 2001 and July 2013, and are all entitled to a refund.

The High Court judgement also pushed Southwark to end its contract with Thames Water. From April, the company will begin billing council tenants directly, rather than through the council.

A Thames Water spokesman said this week: “Customers will be set up on a regular payment plan and will receive their payment cards and bills in April, as well as our full support if they have any questions."

Southwark tenants will also be sent a reply-paid envelope in case they want to request further information, the spokesman added. Thames Water also has a dedicated freephone number for customers.

Southwark Council has given an update on the pace of its refunds, stating that 43,327 cases have been processed (including some to tenants management organisations), while a total of 31,377 payments have been made.

The figures at the beginning of February were 41,857 cases processed and 30,448 payments made.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said the issuing of refunds had been a “complex process”, but that she was “pleased with the progress” that had been made.

“I thank residents for their patience while we continue to refund people,” Cllr Cryan said.

Grieving sister of Bermondsey’s ‘gentle giant’ Gomer thanks his friends for paying for his funeral

THE GRIEVING sister of Bermondsey’s ‘gentle giant’ – who she last heard from almost 28 years ago – has publicly thanked his friends for paying for her brother’s funeral.

A desperate search for Gomer Roberts’ family was launched last May after the popular local was found dead aged 53 in his home.

His Bermondsey friends finally clubbed together and stumped up the cash so that he wouldn’t have a pauper’s funeral, after their search proved fruitless.

Now, almost a year later, his long-lost sister – who was adopted with Gomer in South Africa when they were babies – has contacted the News to give her thanks to readers, after discovering the tragic news online.

Bronwen WynRoberts (now Vearncombe) told the News that Gomer, whose full name was Meurig Gomer WynRoberts, was last seen by his family in1989 when he “disappeared off the face of the earth” at the age of 27.

His sister last saw him when they were both visiting their parents at their family home in north Wales.

She says he was his “usual self” when he disappeared and that he even had plans to buy a flat in north Wales, which made it all the more shocking when years passed and he failed to get in touch.

Bronwen, now aged 53 and married with two children, only found out Gomer had died in Peckham last year, after desperately searching for him online last week.

“It was my birthday on March 9 and I had been to watch that film Lion about the Indian boy who got adopted and it really inspired me that it took him 25 years to find his mother,” said Bronwen, who lives in Hampshire.

“I got home, it was about 11pm and I decided to Google it again and came across the article on Facebook.”

Bronwen, born in March 1964, aren’t blood related, but were both adopted by Wendi and Leslie Wyn-Roberts.

Their adoptive parents, both from north Wales, had lived out in South Africa for about ten years and decided to move to Henley-on-Thames, near Oxford, when Gomer was five, to give their children a good education.

"It was a great upbringing,” said Bronwen. “My father had a good job and Gomer went to a really nice private school and I went to the local comprehensive. We had a happy childhood. He always loved his rugby and he was always huge for his age.

"He didn't go to uni; he wasn't the uni type. He did some work in London and had lots of different jobs. When I started working in London I used to see him regularly.

"He could charm anyone. He was good looking, with blue eyes and blonde hair and women would fall at his feet. He was just larger than life. He knew everybody and was very popular.

"He would travel around a bit and get into a bit of debt and my father would bail him out. He was lovable really, but I think there came a point probably where it wasn't fine.

“When I got married in February 1990 he didn't make the wedding and he didn't get in touch at all.

“He was always flitting about – the longest I knew him to have a job was for twelve to eighteen months and then he would move on – so the first year or so we just thought he was doing something and that he would show up.

“But after about a year or so my parents thought they would go and find him and my dad spoke to the Salvation Army and hired private detectives.

“He spent a lot of money looking for him over the years and before he died in 2004 one of the last things he said to me was about my brother - and it broke my heart to know that he died not knowing what he was doing and my mother just couldn't talk about it anymore, it was too upsetting for her.

"On birthdays and Christmases I would search for him. I was working in London for quite a while and I thought I might bump into him on the Tube. I would go to rugby matches at the Millennium Stadium in Wales and even sang on the pitch and I would think 'you're probably here somewhere'.

“It’s really gutting to think that that hope isn't there anymore and he's gone, and at such a young age.”

When their mother died a couple of years ago, Bronwen had an obituary published in a number of newspapers and online, in the hope Gomer would see it and get in touch.

“I thought he would be devastated,” she said. “I made it searchable so people could find me, but nobody phoned that telephone number.”

"It’s really sad to think that there was no one [from his family] there for him at his funeral, but he didn't want to be found,” said Bronwen. "I have no idea really why he disappeared.”

Bronwen plans to travel to Bermondsey in the near future to meet Gomer’s friends and thank them in person for paying for and arranging his funeral. “I want to speak to his friends and find out a little more about him and some answers and I just want to know that he was happy,” said Bronwen.

“Someone told me he's got a daughter and I would love to meet her.

"I want to thank his friends because he had some great ones by the looks of it, who stood by him and raised money. I

will be forever grateful, because they were there for him and I want to repay them for that.”

“It’s absolutely amazing what they did and I’m just sorry that they couldn’t find me.”

HISTORIC ENGLAND has expressed concerns over plans for a Blackfriars skyscraper, claiming it would affect the view from St James’s Park.

The 178.5-metre residential building dubbed the Jenga Tower - could be built on Stamford Street as part of a wider scheme, if plans submitted by Black Pearl Ltd. and Wilkinson Eyre are given the go ahead.

The plans include a mixed-use scheme of residential, hotel and office space.

Heritage watchdog Historic England has written to the council saying it does not oppose the plans – but that the council must “consider very carefully the extent of this harm, and whether it is necessary to deliver the potential public benefits”.

“The increased height of the residential tower, however, means that this building will have a significant impact on London's historic environment including the grade I registered St. James's Park when viewed from the bridge,” Michael Dunn, Historic England's principal inspector of historic buildings and areas, wrote.

If given the green light by the council, the development would include 227 market residential units, 64 affordable housing units, and 548 hotel rooms. A new public square is also part of the plans.

spokesperson said: “We were called at 7.03pm on Thursday (March 9) to reports of a stabbing at Tower Bridge Road.

“We sent an ambulance crew and an incident response officer to the scene. We also dispatched London’s Air Ambulance.

“We treated a man at the scene and took him as a priority to a major trauma centre.”

Assault near primary WALWORTH: Police and paramedics were called to the Aylesbury Estate on Monday to reports that a man in his twenties had been assaulted close to a Primary School.

Officers arrived at 2pm to Gayhurst, near Michael Faraday Primary School, and found the victim with facial and injuries.

His injuries were not life-threatening or life-changing. No arrests were made, but enquiries are ongoing.

Anyone with information that can help the police with their investigation should call 101.

Hidden warehouse to be bulldozed The former hop warehouse is hidden behind the 1980s building

A CONSULTANCY firm’s plans to redevelop its Borough office and demolish a nineteenth-century warehouse have been given the green light.

PwC submitted plans to replace its existing four-storey 1980s building at 10-18 Union Street with a new building up to six storeys in height.

The development will also involve the demolition of a nineteenth-century

former hop warehouse tucked away behind the 1980s building.

The buildings are within the boundary of the Borough High Street Conservation Area.

The proposed scheme includes office space, as well as retail space.

It will be car-free, with 94 cycle parking spaces – including 83 for long stay and 11 for visitors.

The plans were approved by the casting vote of chair Cllr Nick Dolezal, after a tied vote among members of Southwark’s planning committee.

A DISABLED man who lives in a flat with thirteen steps leading to the front door says he has been left housebound after the council refused to let him bid for a bungalow.

John Ryan (pictured) lives in a council property in Lucey Way, Bermondsey, which he says is classed as a ground-floor flat – despite a staircase leading to it from the front door. The 53-year-old spends each day sat in an armchair as the doorways in the flat are too narrow for his wheelchair – and he can’t get down the stairs to go outside.

Mr Ryan says he and his wife Mary Deadman, 54, ended up in rent arrears of £5,000 after they were both sent to prison in 2012 – and that the council won’t let them bid for a more suitable property because of this.

“We’ve had a fire inspector already come here a while ago and he said it’s unsuitable for me to live here because if there’s a fire I’ve got no way of getting out because I can’t walk,” said Mr Ryan.

“I’ve got narrowing of the spine and damaged vertebrae and damage in my leg. I suffer from memory loss because I’ve got a shrunken brain. I was having falls and it damaged my back, and I have epilepsy.

“A JCB went over my head when I came up from a manhole. I think that was in 1990 and the condition has got worse.”

Mr Ryan said he and his wife were sent to prison after he was caught with drugs abroad.

“We went to Jamaica and me being a bit silly I bought a bit of cannabis,” he said. “Mary didn’t have any cannabis on her and she didn’t know I had it.

“We went away in 2012 and Mary came out in 2013 and I came out in 2014.”

The couple say they have paid £700 of the £5,000 rent arrears and that they want to stay in the area to be near to their son and daughter.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing, said the council would look at reassessing the couple’s housing need. “This case is not straightforward but it is fair to say that we do need to reassess the family’s housing need and look into all aspects of their situation, including the significant arrears, before we move forward,” she said.

“We will rectify any errors and speak with the family directly in order to resolve their housing situation.”

Man from Lake District trying to track descendants of Peckham schoolboy - after finding book given to him over 100 years ago

A BOOK given to a Peckham schoolboy in 1883 has been discovered in the Lake District and now its new owner is looking to trace its history.

David Wood, Cumbria resident and current custodian of the book, is hoping the News and its readers can help him find out more about the novel’s original owner and even locate his descendants.

“I really want to try and track the relatives down. I’m on a one man crusade!” he said. “That book is history looking right at me!”

The 1878 edition of The Swiss Family Robinson, which David got from a friend after a house clear-out in autumn last year, comes complete with clues in an inscription.

It was given to a standard (year) four boy called Bery Hill in Midsummer 1883, for being “first boy in the class” and for “good conduct.”

He was given it by his school, which was called Wesleyan Middle Class School in Peckham. It no longer exists but was on Stafford Street. It opened in 1834, changed name to Stafford Street Temporary School in 1923 and closed in 1929.

It is also believed, due to the “Wesleyan” name, to have been linked to the Methodist church, with John Wesley being the founder of the church.

“As soon as I got the book, I got in touch with Phillip Serrell [an auctioneer who has appeared on daytime BBC show Bargain Hunt].

He told me it was definitely a first edition but not worth very much, because there are a lot of them around,” said the 61-year-old.

“Anyway, I don’t want to sell it. I want to try and track down the living relatives,” he said. “This is family history.”

David described how his motivation for finding the book’s roots comes because “quite simply, history is so quickly forgotten.”

STAFF AT King’s College Hospital have raised fears that a tax-saving “privatisation” scheme will undermine their pensions and cut maternity-leave pay.

King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCHT) has been accused of privatising some of its services, which would save £7million in VAT liabilities per year.

Public sector union Unison has revealed to the News that KCHT has transferred procurement staff, technicians and health care assistants to a private subsidiary company ‘KCH Interventional Facilities Management’ (KCH IFM), set up in June last year.

The plan was recommended by consultancy firm Price Waterhouse Cooper, using ‘Contracted Out Services’ rules created by HMRC in 2015.

The rules allow NHS trusts to reduce VAT bills by letting them transfer staff to private companies that are owned by NHS trusts.

Affected staff now believe they will lose their link to the NHS pension scheme if they change position within the company – even if given a promotion – and would fall back on the statutory pension scheme, which makes a less generous contribution.

Of the 60 or more staff already transferred to KCH IFM, four have resigned because they “did not want be a part of a private company”, Unison has said.

KCHT said: “The terms and conditions that will apply to staff members, who apply for and are appointed to a new role through a formal recruitment process, [are] currently under discussion with staff and unions.”

Frank Wood, executive committee member for Unison, and who has worked as a biomedical scientist at King’s since 1990, said the Trust’s staff community were “very concerned by what has been done”.

“It seems to essentially be privatisation that’s motivated by finance, and not by consideration for the health service,” Frank, 52, said.

“All of these staff, including procurement staff who buy x-ray machines and intensive care units, would lose their NHS pensions if they try and change role.

“The move would also see employees’ maternity pay reduced to

the statutory minimum. Some staff have said they are now questioning whether to have another child.

“And just on moral terms, a public body looking at a private company to affect its tax status beggars belief.

And the Trust would have paid a lot of money to PWC to provide this advice.”

Documents shown to the News confirmed the annual £7million VAT saving, adding that another advantage of the scheme was that clinical staff who “currently spend time managing supply chain activities” could “better spend [that time by] delivering patient care and improving the quality of services”.

A spokesperson for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: “The Trust takes the welfare of all its staff seriously and KCH Interventional Facilities Management will also enable the Trust to continue in its commitment to providing the best care for all its patients.

“Staff who have been transferred under Transfer of Undertakings and Protection of Earnings (TUPE) to KCH Interventional Facilities Management will retain their NHS terms and conditions. The VAT positions follows precisely the same rules that HMRC applies to all NHS organisations.”

The Trust also confirmed that eight technicians who work in sterilising supplies have been moved to a company called STERIS, but did not comment on how those staff could also be affected.

A PECKHAM landmark of six black actors’ portraits has been removed from its home in Peckham Hill Street and will be moved to a new home, Southwark Council has said.

Ibrahim Kamara, whose dad owns a shop opposite the original location of the portraits, reported them missing on Twitter on Monday.

Ibrahim expressed dismay that the “iconic” portraits had been taken down; to make way for the construction site of the Mountview Academy acting school.

Included in the portraits are: Ashley Walters; David Oyelowo MBE; Marsha Thomason; Wunmi Mosaku; Fraser James; Adjoa Andoh; and Rudolph Walker OBE. After Ibrahim’s tweets received over 300,000 views on Twitter, a formal response was given by Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes.

“We have removed the stunning portraits from Peckham Hill Street for safekeeping while work begins on the new Mountview Theatre School, and following some damage caused by recent bad weather,” Cllr Mark Williams said “I’d like to reassure residents that we are working to secure a new home for them locally. Whilst we’re sad to see them move on from this site, we’re keen to unlock the opportunities the school will bring for local people.

“We’re confident that bringing Mountview to Peckham will give local people the chance to follow in the footsteps of the stars depicted in the portraits.”

Peckham-born Star Wars actor John Boyega joined the discussion on Twitter, saying “Phew great.

Southwark has 5th highest flytipping rates - but figures show incidents have declined

SOUTHWARK HAS the 5th highest fly-tipping rates in England, figures show.

The government statistics show that 21,359 incidents were recorded in Southwark for 2015/16, amounting to 70 incidents for every 1000 residents. 21% of incidents were classified as “a small van load” worth of waste.

In 2015/16 fly-tipping cost the council £808,757 in clear-up costs and an additional £48,708 in enforcement action.

Fly-tipping hotspots include Solomon’s Passage in Peckham Rye, where there were eighteen service requests from October to December 2016, Penton Place in Newington, where there were seventeen, and The Cut at Blackfriars, where there were eleven.

Peckham Rye ward had the most flytipping incidents reported by residents in 2016, with 349 in 2016, followed by Cathedral with 331 and Newington with 276.

However, government figures show that the number of fly-tipping incidents has in fact decreased from 25,583 in 2014/15 to 21,359 in 2015/16, despite being the 5th highest rate of any English council.

In May last year the government gave local authorities the power to issue on the spot fines of between £150 and £400 to those caught fly-tipping, instead of having to take them to court.

The BBC reported in January that Southwark Council had not yet used these new powers.

A spokesperson for Southwark Council explained that to introduce a new charge a decision must be made by the council’s cabinet team. As this process is carried out in February each year, Southwark Council continued to issue £80 fines rather than using its new powers to issue fines of up to £400. A decision has now been finalised and the council will be introducing the tougher fines from 1 April 2017.

In 2015/16 Southwark Council undertook sixteen prosecutions for the worst fly-tippers in the borough and issued 208 fines with a total value of £9,250.

Southwark Lib Dem Council leader Cllr Anood Al-Samerai said: "Liberal Democrat councillors opposed Labour's introduction of bulk refuse collection charges because of concerns about flytipping in the borough. The evidence backs up what we, and many locals, have been saying for months - that fly-tipping

in Southwark is amongst the worst in the country.

“The Labour council needs to get on top of fly-tipping - reintroduce free collections and increase fly-tipping collection vehicles. Then it should fine those who fly-tip to help pay for the collection costs.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for environment and public realm, said: “Fly-tipping blights communities and burdens taxpayers with the cost of clearing and disposing of illegally dumped waste. This money would be better spent on valuable services that benefit our residents.

“Despite the challenge, we’re committed to making culprits pay for their crimes. We’re also engaging with local businesses to ensure they have the right waste management arrangements in place as well as encouraging residents to report incidents.”

A NINE-year-old girl’s artistic designs will be showcased before thousands of Tesco shoppers in Elephant and Castle after winning a competition for her school.

Aelwen Hamley entered the competition for youngsters to design a print for hessians bags, to be given away to shoppers at the Tesco in Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre.

The triumphant youngster was announced as the winner with her picture of an apple, made up of smaller

pictures of other pieces of fruit.

Aelwen also won £500 for the school and a £25 Tesco gift card for herself.

Store manager Jonathan Mattai said: “We asked primary school children in the local area to draw a picture to promote healthy eating.

“We had a difficult job to pick a winner, but Aelwen’s design showed a lot of imagination and creativity and really stood out.”

Headteacher Marian Kennedy said: “The pupils are all very excited that Aelwen won the competition and staff, pupils and parents are looking forward to using the new hessian bags.”

Stop trying to build on Burgess Park

F SOUTHWARK’S Environment & Community Destruction Department (also known as the “Regeneration” Dept.) fails to destroy our parks by building on them, they try instead to pen them in with huge new tower blocks.

In the 30 years that I have lived by Burgess Park, they have tried 50 times to build on it.

It has just one nature site not surrounded by poisonous busy roads – New Church Road Nature Site. It is the only one in the entire north-east of the borough. Three times I have successfully been to Public Inquiries, to stop each new Borough Plan from removing its legal open-space protection. Having failed to bulldoze it, the council wants to build a massive largely private tower-block on its southern edge.

This would throw the nature reserve into almost permanent shadow. The human and artificial light impacts caused would destroy its wildlife value.

But it is not only wildlife which will suffer. Studies show that people living in densely populated urban areas need access to nature and green open-spaces for mental health. Burgess Park is a narrow, elongated park. Southwark’s plans to surround it with new part-private tower-blocks for absentee Far-East Asian investors, will turn it into an oppressive claustrophobic traffic island, as well as destroying the existing communities on the Aylesbury.

Southwark is not only building on green open-spaces across its council estates, but is eliminating much of its protected lowrise industrial estates, such as the one adjacent to the nature reserve. This means local working people will have to travel further for work, emitting more carbon emissions.

The Friends of Burgess Park said: “We believe this diminishes natural light, creates shadows and impacts on the open aspects and views afforded into and out of the park. It creates light pollution from the building into the park. The London Wildlife Trust’s report also makes this point”.

ONE HUNDRED years on from the first International Women’s Day, some may be slightly baffled as to why such a day is still needed.

There will be those who argue that women can do what they want here: they have the vote, can work where they want or receive the same education. Everything on the surface may seem fair.

If only. The original aim of the day – to achieve gender equality for women across the world – has not yet been realised. In many countries, a gender pay gap continues to exist, glass ceilings are barely cracked and there are not enough women at the highest levels of business and politics.

Internationally, the statistics are staggering – and frightening: at least one in three women have been beaten, coerced into sex or abused in their lifetime; between 1.5 and three million women and girls die each year because of gender-based violence; between 700,000 and 4 million girls and women are sold into prostitution each year.

Meanwhile 99% of maternal deaths occur in developing countries, 41 million girls worldwide are still denied a primary education and at least 200 million women and girls alive today have undergone brutal genital mutilation.

Of course, huge strides have been made with abuses and inequality being more readily challenged. But there is still a long way to go.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day was ‘Be Bold for Change’. Whether you are a girl or woman pursuing your dreams or a boy or man who wants his sister, daughter or mother to have the opportunity to achieve their ambitions, it’s a message that we should all support.

Council look at own short-term lets

SOUTHWARK DEFEND Council Housing welcomes Cllr Mark Williams’ initiative to clamp down on private property owners exploiting the housing shortage by letting properties at exorbitant rents through websites like Airbnb (Southwark News 23 February 2017).

We share his concern ‘that the transient nature of very short-term lets could cause problems for neighbours due to noise, potential security issues or anti-social behaviour’.

We believe that all available homes should be available to rent at genuinely affordable rents and on long-term secure tenancies, thereby protecting local communities. Perhaps Cllr Williams should also look at the hundreds of short-term lets created by the council on the Aylesbury Estate and convert these to permanent tenancies. And how about the Council making a commitment not to implement the Tory Government’s plans to make all future council tenancies short-term?

THE NATIONAL Lottery Awards 2017 are open for entries, giving Lottery-funded projects a chance to shine in the national limelight.

The Awards recognise the amazing work done by organisations using National Lottery funding to transform communities and change lives. They celebrate the unsung heroes behind the success of local arts, sports,

Every week National Lottery players raise £30 million for good causes and, since 1994, over 500,000 Lottery grants have been awarded.

Seven projects will be recognised at a star-studded awards ceremony broadcast on BBC One later this year and each will win a £3,000 cash prize.

Labour are trying to rewrite council budget MOST RESIDENTS aren’t that keen on politicians going back and forth at each other in your letters pages and I normally agree.

However, Labour seemed to be trying to re-write council budget history in the News.

Residents see Learning Disabilities Day Centres being closed, while Labour can find £1million for the Tate Modern. Labour say they have to increase council tax so we all pay more, but they’ve found money to introduce new pay-outs for their own Labour Councillors. And they say they can’t afford free bulk refuse collections, but they’re not making the money they could from polluters, fly-tippers and developers.

There are clear choices for Councillors when it comes to the council’s finances. Labour keep making the wrong choices. Residents will also have a choice next year at the council elections and the chance to make the right choice - for a Liberal Democrat Council which isn’t focused on helping their own Cllrs and property developers, but which fights the corner of local people for genuinely affordable homes, clean streets and protecting the most vulnerable.

Budget was a test the Tories failed

L

AST WEEK’S budget was a key test for Theresa May’s Conservative government and by almost any measure the Tories failed this test.

The headlines in the days after the budget were dominated by the Tories breaking their manifesto commitment not to raise National Insurance, with low income selfemployed households losing up to 16% of their income from the budget.

At a time when our National Health Service is under tremendous pressure it is an insult to our hard working doctors, nurses and support staff that the additional funds that are so badly needed were not provided. Prominent Leave campaigners promised an extra £350million a week for the NHS but we’ve still not seen a penny of this money, or any plan for it.

There were small measures to try to reduce the impact of the massive Tory increase in business rates on local traders, but local businesses are telling me that these will barely scratch the surface of the problem.

The chancellor failed to mention Brexit in his speech, but he has had to increase Government borrowing by an eye watering £100 billion because of Brexit and the budget deficit which was meant to have been eliminated by the end of the 2010-2015 parliament is now predicted not to be tackled until halfway through the 2020-2025 parliament!

There were no further commitments in the budget to tackle the housing crisis in London, nor steps to reduce the huge further £400million cut to London’s policing budget or to reverse some of the cuts to renewable energy investment that are needed to tackle climate change.

At a time when we need a new station in Camberwell there was no new money for transport and the Tories much vaunted changes to social care funding won’t even restore half of the money that they’ve cut nationally from care budgets since 2010.

Altogether a really poor budget that demonstrated the ineptitude of this Tory government, the real financial cost of Brexit and will fail to reduce inequality or increase fairness in our country.

We see Superman soaring, pushing or just standing there looking cool. Batman is depicted as friendly caped crusader and as the terrifying Dark Knight. Flash is portrayed speeding from one place to the next, leaving Flash colours in his wake. Wonder Woman is still beautiful and still makes me feel like a hormonal 13 year old, even when she is made up of little cubes.

SET IN 1970s San Francisco, Diary of a Teenage Girl follows Minnie Goetze (Rona Morrison) through what is initially somewhat typical teenage debauchery and discovery to stark and uncomfortable vulnerability, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Adapted by Marielle Heller from Phoebe Gloeckner’s original graphic novel of the same name, the piece begins with Minnie embarking on keeping an audio diary of her teen years, recording her innermost thoughts, feelings and experiences into her tape recorder. Documenting her home life with her younger sister and free spirited, bohemian mother, Minnie tells and bares all.

Minnie’s ‘initiation’ into adulthood is her affair with her mother’s very much adult boyfriend, Monroe, played sufficiently sleazy by Jamie Wilkes, and she finds herself thrust, very willingly into a world of sex and drugs. Relaying her experiences either to her diary or to her mismatched, rather slutty best friend Kimmie (played energetically by Saskia Strallen), Minnie revels and anguishes in a storm of emotion and anger.

Played to perfection, Rona Morrison leads as Minnie. A huge chunk of the narrative is monologue, with pauses in the action allowing Morrison to offer her own take on what is happening around and to her. She is enigmatic and endearing, a challenging feat for what could come across as whiny and wearing. While her story may be extreme the teen angst displayed is familiar, heartfelt and at times humorous. Make no mistake, at no point is the audience laughing at Minnie for her dramatic outbursts but rather laughing inwardly at themselves, reminiscent of their own explosive, adolescent ire.

Interestingly, there is very little repercussion for the sad, failed parade of adults surrounding our lead, what we the audience see is what Minnie chooses to share. Her youth means

that she passes no judgement on what is essentially child abuse, perhaps seeing no real fault in Monroe’s actions, revelling in being found attractive and desirable. This ambiguity is remarkably accurate, with Minnie perhaps not seeing the gravity of these events in her young life. But it is not needed, we are privy only to what are essentially vignettes of this teenage life. She sees absolute autonomy in her life to a point and once she experiences the loss of control in the most extreme, embarks on a realisation and change in her own choices.

Staged in Southwark Playhouse’s ‘Little’, Andrew Riley’s set and costume is spot on. With a bed placed centre stage and little else, Nina Dunn’s video design is excellent, projecting Gloeckner’s graphic novel illustrations onto the set. While the subject matter throughout is gritty and graphic, the cast and crew deliver a charm to the piece which makes it timeless and thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish.

AS LONDON was reaching its pre-WWII peak, a Methodist priest had a stroke of genius to create one of the country’s most notable youth clubs: Clubland, below a Methodist church in Camberwell Road.

The Rev James ‘Jimmy’ Butterworth stood just five foot tall, but with towering charisma, and was deeply influenced by his time fighting in WW1.

He founded the pioneering youth club for boys and girls in rooms below Walworth Wesleyan Church when he touched down in the capital in 1922, and gave 52 years of his life to keeping it going.

The young Butterworth grew up in Lancashire, and loathed his first jobs: as a paper boy lugging sacks of the local rag in miserable weather, and at one of the region’s cotton mills.

He studied at Manchester University, where even then he had ambitions to start a youth club – something unheard of in a time when children were to be seen and not heard.

Jimmy saw himself as apart from many of his colleagues, and had a unique take on his role in the community.

In a letter to a newspaper in 1932, he wrote: “It has been desperate hard work, but I have lived with men as a private throughout the war, and knew that the church was fast bound by irrelevances, and was more resembling an organised class apart, and there was more of the spirit of Christianity in the world than was expected. I also knew that was needed was less theory and more action.”

For his convictions, he drew flak from fellow ministers in the Methodist Church, who said he ought to have dedicated himself equally to the old generations as much as the young.

There were no public grants to be had in those days, and it took years of dedicated fundraising for Jimmy to finally see the place open in 1939.

Jimmy had been on the brink of giving in before his prayers were answered with a £20,000 lump sum from Lord Rochester.

When the funds were finally scraped together, a new chapel was designed by esteemed architect Sir Edward Maufe.

A report of the grand opening appeared in the Christian World newspaper on May 25, 1939.

It said: “Rev. James Butterworth, former newspaper seller and millhand stood by the side of Queen Mary as she declared Clubland open.

Every man in his life, I suppose, has his day of triumph, but no one will ever enjoy, and no one ever deserved, a greater triumph than Mr Butterworth.”

The occasion was also marked by appearances from the Duke of Gloucester, the Duke of Windsor, and huge crowds poured into the already-densely populated area to catch a glimpse of Queen Mary.

Their enthusiasm was boundless, and it was infused with a sense of proprietorial satisfaction that they were showing her something of which I believe the district is mightily proud.”

If there was any fairness to the King’s comments, surely Clubland was the antidote.

Inside was a gymnasium, handicraft workshops, art studio, music and drama performance rooms, a canteen, roof garden, and a wirenetted, floodlit roof playground. At its peak, the boys’ and girls’ club boasted some 300 members and could raise £1,000 per year from

donations. The club was bombed and burnt out in a 1941 air raid, just two years after the opening of its new chapel, and ten years of graft goodwill to get it open.

For two decades, Jimmy fought to repair and restore the club, but it continued to be put to good use during the Blitz as a shelter for Clublanders and their families left homeless by the bombing.

He sought help from Britain’s friends to the west, and took five

tours of the USA to find the finances he needed.

He said he found the visits “humiliating”. But nevertheless, Jimmy’s charm served him well, and a donation came from American comedian Bob Hope, among others.

The national spotlight shone on all that Jimmy had worked for when Queen Elizabeth visited Clubland’s grand reopening on May 13, 1964. In addition to the original structure was new accommodation for 35 youngsters.

An early attendee of the reopened club was a certain Michael Caine, known then as Maurice Michlewight. Laurence Olivier, ballerina Margot Fonteyn, and actor John Gielgud were also known to have frequented it.

Jimmy died aged 80, having retired three years earlier and moved to East Hoathley in Sussex.

He left behind his wife and their son and daughter, and was buried in Lancashire.

fter skipping between a multitude of Porsches and BMWs, and ducking under an orange shutter I found myself in The London Distillery Company, where Dodd’s Gin and Kew Organic Gin is created, and soon a whisky that is being distilled there will be ready to go out into the world, which the team are very excited about, writes Michael Holland...

To be honest, they get quite excited about most things alcoholic, though passionate would be a more suitable adjective.

The team, Meeghan Murdoch, Toby Sims, Rob Sutherland and Darren Rook the CEO, have a real love of their products, how they are made, as well as how much their carbon footprint impacts on life.

Toby gave me the history of Ralph Dodd, a 19th century entrepreneur who founded the distillery in 1807, but after falling foul of the law never actually made one drop of drink!

Jump 200 years forward and Darren and an associate, sitting at a bar drinking whisky, decided to begin distilling whisky in London and felt The London Distillery Company would be a good name for their new venture. While they were awaiting the legal three years for their whisky to age in the cask they set about making a gin to fill the time and named it in honour of Ralph Dodd, the original London distiller.

In their relatively short time in business the company has been approached by Fortnum & Mason, no less, to produce gin for them, and made approaches to Kew Gardens with ideas to forage in the Gardens for the botanicals to create a gin in their name, which they agreed to. Toby told me all about the Tufnell Park honey they use in their recipes and how the bees live close to the plant flavours they are looking for in their gin(‘There are subtle, but regional differences’), and where they source their organic ingredients from. Meeghan related tales of her international working life in alcohol, and of her enthusiasm for organic produce to make the world a better place. Ten minutes with Meeghan and I knew that Dodd’s Gin would be a necessary addition to my ten-a-day and will lead to a healthier life.

I jest, but Meeghan takes this stuff very seriously, and rightly so. At their small bar they use glasses made from cellulose which are fully degradable and a far better alternative to the plastic that blights the planet.

It was explained to me how gin has changed in the past hundred years. It was mainly made with juniper but

after the war the price of juniper rocketed so other, cheaper ingredients were promoted, namely coriander.

The Dodd’s Gin, Toby tells me, is ‘a 1920s take on gin, quite junipery…It has eight botanicals in it.’ The Kew gin, I am informed, is more ‘modern’ in that it is made with more coriander, and is a bestseller.

Already they are exporting to China, Australia and Europe so their products have circumnavigated the world from this nondescript railway arch near Tower Bridge. The gin is all made in Christina, the still named after the boss’s wife, which to the untrained eye doesn’t look big enough and ugly

enough to supply the planet, but Toby estimates that Christina can produce about 300 litres a day, which is a constant stream of gin.

Matilda (after the CEO’s grandmother) is the still that will soon be making whisky. This still looked far more domineering than Christina.

Being a small team everyone seems to pitch in when and where needed, whether that is bottling, tasting, distilling or putting the labels on by hand. They have job titles but do not seem too precious about any distinction in their roles.

But I got the feeling that as much as they get on and do their jobs well, the

overarching connection that connects everyone here is a lifetime’s love of good drink, made well with good ingredients. Meeghan explained how she has different drinks for different moods and seasons, describing the richer whiskies she likes in the winter months, or using different tonics for mixing with her gins, depending on how she feels.

Ms Murdoch was keen to emphasise that every company they work with are working towards cutting down emissions, being more organic and decreasing their carbon footprint; The London Distillery Company even changed their energy supplier to an

environmental friendly company.

Of course, I sampled the wares too.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that they intend to make an order under section 14 (1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to facilitate highway works by Hill Partnership being proposed in part of the above named road.

Whilst works are in progress, and whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in Wadding Street, between Brandon Street and Rodney Road.

An alternative route would be via: Browning Street, Walworth Road, Albany Road, Thurlow Street, Flint Street, as applicable.

The existing one way working in Wadding Street, between Brandon Street and Rodney Road along with Content Street, between Brandon Street and Wadding Street will be suspended to allow for access and egress purposes.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will be in place between the 30th March 2017 – 11th May 2017

Out of cup, but Hamlet turn on style to mark International Women’s Day

DULWICH HAMLET tumbled at the penultimate stage in their attempt to reach the final of the Alan Turvey Trophy on Tuesday night.

Alex Akrofi put Tonbridge Angels ahead in the ninth minute before Kenny Beaney levelled with a free-kick for his side.

A much-changed Hamlet were dominating but there was controversy in the 31st minute when Dumebi Dumaka was through on goal before being hauled down by Liam Smith. The referee gave the penalty but failed to send off Smith, who had denied Dumaka a clear goalscoring opportunity. To compound that,

Ibra Sekajja saw his spot-kick saved by Jonathan Henley.

There was another hint of controversy before the home side went back in front five minutes after the break. Hamlet were on the counterattack when the referee stopped the game to allow attention for Akrofi, who went down after a clash with goalkeeper Preston Edwards. From the drop-ball, the recovered Akrofi crossed to former Brentford striker Nathan Elder to nod home.

Gavin Rose’s side again felt hard-done by as they searched for another equaliser when Dumaka appeared to be shoved to the ground in the penalty box.

Tonbridge sealed their place in the final with fourteen minutes left, Akrofi prodding past Edwards for his second.

It was a better afternoon at the weekend for the Dulwich side, who wore special one-off purple kits at Champion Hill to celebrate International Women’s Day. And they turned on the style on the pitch as well, cruising past Merstham 5-0 in their Isthmian League Premier Division clash.

Casey sets sights high

A HOT-SHOT table tennis player from Southwark’s Sacred Heart School says she wants “to go all the way” to the top of her sport after an impressive win last month.

Fifteen-year-old Casey Nickle won the Girls U16 title at the annual Jack Petchey Central London Regional Singles competition, which is in partnership with Table Tennis England.

The event bought together 39 players from five schools from Camden, City of Westminster, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Southwark and Wandsworth.

Nickle defeated thirteen-year-old Arianna Digimmarino from Kensington’s Holland Park School 3-0 in the final of the

round-robin competition.

And she has set her ambitions high: “I like winning and it’s something I am good at. I was happy with my play and wanted to better than last year when I was not placed in the final. I want to go all the way and be a great table tennis player.”

Next up is the Singles finals of the Jack Petchey Schools’ Table Tennis competition, which takes place on Saturday, June 10 at the University of East London in the SportsDock.

The Jack Petchey Schools’ Table Tennis programme is aimed at increasing participation and awareness of table tennis in schools and youth clubs in London and Essex.

Tomlin doubled the lead in the 24th minute and ten minutes before halftime it was three, Tomlin curling home a brilliant free-kick after Green had been fouled.

Hamlet refused to let up, and Tomlin turned provider with still less than an hour played as Dipo Akinyemi’s header crossed the line despite the efforts of Smith.

That all set up arguably the goal of the game. Hamlet swiftly moved the ball from right to left, Beaney and Green then exchanged passes before substitute Panutche Camara sublimely turned in the box and shot past Smith for this first goal for the club.

It was a fitting finish to a celebratory afternoon. Afterwards, Alex Atack, Dulwich Hamlet Supporter’s Trust vice-chair, said: “The International Women’s Day celebrations at Champion Hill on Saturday were fantastic. The kit looked great and the fans really seemed to get behind it with a number of them wearing their own alternative purple shirts.

“What’s more, the team achieved a comfortable 5-0 win to continue our push up the league.’

The point they picked up after the goalless draw was their second of the season, leaving them eighth after four games.

An audacious bicycle kick from Ella Rutherford just missed the target, before experience former Arsenal goalkeeper Byrne produced a fingertip save to deny Leigh Nicol in the second half.

The showcase takes place on Friday, March 31 when there will be at least one current England player, at least one former England player and several current Surrey players taking part.

CLOSE TO the end, at last some time for levity. Millwall fans were watching Tottenham Hotspur run through their team, ramming home the reality of the gulf between the sides with every goal.

Millwall’s reality now is a tough promotion battle, and their supporters embraced it with humour. “Que sera, sera, whatever will be will be, we’re going to Shrewsbury,” they sang and the home fans responded with laughter and applause.

Millwall had taken a hat-trick of Premier League scalps to get to this stage, but were undone by a hat-trick from Son Heung-min, completed with almost the last kick of the game. It was one final, painful kick in the guts for the away side, and a personal ordeal for Tom King, who let Son’s volley squirm through his grasp.

It was tough on King, in just his tenth senior competitive game for Millwall.

He may never find himself this busy in his career again, against a rampant, relentless Spurs team that, unfortunately for Millwall, were ravenously goal-hungry. This was the last-ever fixture at 118-year-old White Hart Lane, and the last incarnation of the team to play it put on a devastating show of power, pace and, especially from Son, precision finishing.

These were most of Millwall’s worst fears being borne out. The problem with the squad that Lions boss Neil Harris has assembled is there is a general lack of pace, and that was brought sharply into focus in a game like this.

It’s fine in League One, but on Sunday Millwall had just one player in the team who had the potential to cause Spurs problems with his speed. As it happened, Jed Wallace really only got one opportunity to show it when he got behind Ben Davies in the first half, but he couldn’t find a Millwall player with his cross.

Otherwise Millwall were rarely on the ball and the stats were frightening: Spurs had 77 per cent possession, 32 efforts on goal – fifteen on target – and won the corner count twelve-one.

King faced five shots inside the first seven minutes, rapid gunfire from Harry Winks, Son, Harry Kane, Winks again and Son again.

Millwall were given slight hope when Kane stayed on the turf after his effort, having rolled his ankle as Jake Cooper tried to make the block. It was clear he wouldn’t be able to continue, and he limped off three minutes later with Christian Eriksen coming on.

At that stage Tottenham had 90 per cent possession and you wondered how long Millwall could hold on. Mauricio Pochettino’s side felt they could profit from targeting Millwall’s left flank in particular, with Kieran Trippier almost playing as a right-sided forward hugging the touchline.

That gave the Lions a problem. Craig and Aiden O’Brien had to be mindful to tuck in to help out in central areas, particularly awkward with Son and Dele Alli, and then Eriksen, prowling around in the inside channels. That left long swathes of space out wide, and Spurs had the quality on the ball of

Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Winks to sweep passes out to the flanks. Spurs were actually sloppy at times, with Trippier failing on a couple of occasions to control passes, and Son on the other side over-hit one ball to the other wing back, Ben Davies.

Those little respites made little difference, however. They did give Millwall their best opportunities to get the ball up the pitch and try to win setpieces or at least throw-ins. But it said much that that was the height of their

hopes. Curiously, when the away side did get throw-ins, they took them short.

Against a side that obviously presses the ball so quickly, that made little sense. Lee Gregory has shown in League One games he can hurl the ball quite a distance, but they ignored that option, for whatever reason.

The closest Millwall came to a goal was as a result of Gregory putting pressure on Alderweireld and Eric Dier.

On 27 minutes, Steve Morison was following up the play with Gregory

proving a nuisance for Dier, and he hit a curled effort first time that for a moment looked like it could find the top corner of Michael Vorm’s net, but the ball went wide.

For all of Spurs’ pressure and creative play, it was actually a Millwall mistake that contributed to the first goal. Ben Thompson rashly went to challenge for a high ball when it seemed Byron Webster had it covered. Alli helped it on to Eriksen and the Dane smacked home a shot low past King.

Ten minutes later it was two, just after one of Millwall’s rare voyages into the opposition half. Spurs broke quickly and snapped the ball wide to Son. His first touch was poor and Millwall could regroup. But Son was not deterred as he took on Jake Cooper, cut inside the defender, and curled a sumptuous leftfooted shot into the far corner.

One legacy of this game was the alleged offensive chants directed at Son which the FA are now investigating.

Son deserves to remember the fixture

for his performance.

Nine minutes into the second half he gave the majority inside the stadium another fond memory when he raced in behind Cooper anticipating Trippier’s ball over the top, and he cracked home a first-time volley to put the tie well beyond Millwall.

More misery was heaped on when Morison went off with a calf problem before there was an hour on the clock.

His replacement Fred Onyedinma combined with another substitute

Calum Butcher but Wallace couldn’t steer his shot on target at the near post.

Millwall were tiring and, worryingly, Spurs were refusing to pull back off the throttle.

Alli made it four eighteen minutes from time, Trippier feeding the ball inside to Eriksen who crossed low to the back post for the England international to finish. That’s been a productive move for Spurs this season and Millwall would have been aware of it, but weary legs and minds meant the fears of a real

battering were raised.

A fifth arrived in the 79th minute.

Vincent Janssen, ignored when Kane went off, had come on in the second half and when Son raced into the box the Dutch striker manoeuvred into space.

Son found him and Janssen found the bottom corner, his first goal from play since joining Spurs last summer.

Still the ordeal wasn’t over. In added time Eriksen lifted a cross to the back post. Son was there but his volley was straight at King, whose traumatic day

was completed when he somehow let the ball slip over the line.

Moments later referee Martin Atkinson blew the final whistle, bringing Millwall’s seventeen-game unbeaten run to a dismal end. It was Tottenham’s biggest FA Cup win since 1973, when they defeated Margate by the same score.

A fitting tribute to White Hart Lane, a cruel lesson for Millwall. They must put it out of their minds quickly and get three points against Bury on Saturday.

ADAM BARRETT knows how to score goals against Millwall – now his task is to help them keep them out.

The Lions’ new first-team development coach was on the scoresheet at The Den last season, grabbing the second to help Southend to a 2-0 league win as Neil Harris’ side struggled to get their campaign firing.

“I pulled my hamstring when I scored so I knew I was getting old then!”, Barrett laughs. The former defender retired in February after a playing career spanning almost 20 years.

He knew Neil Harris and the current Lions manager and Barrett’s older brother Scott are also friends.

After Barrett hung up his boots last month, Harris was on the phone asking whether he would be interested in a role on his management team.

Barrett started his coaching badges eight years ago, and recently completed his Uefa A licence, the fourth rung of five on the professional ladder.

For Barrett, the answer to Harris’ question was easy.

“I’ve known the manager a long while, he’s good friends with my older brother,” he explains. “We always kept in contact. I’d never worked with him but it’s a fantastic opportunity for me to come here, hopefully add something to the coaching team and learn from the likes of Dave Livermore, the gaffer, and Scott Fitzgerald, who has been around the place a long while.

“The manager has a great environment here, he’s done extremely well and it seems like it’s a club on the up. Any way I can help, that’s what I’ll be looking to do.

“It’s got a really good feel, the staff are all together, the players are all fighting for the right thing. The attitude is spot on so it’s an exciting time to come to the club.”

Barrett started his career at Leyton Orient before moving to Plymouth and making his league debut in August 1999. After a season and a half there he joined Mansfield and then Bristol Rovers before his first stint at Southend, where he played for six years and 289 games and where he was captain and regarded as a hardy and honest centre-back.

Spells at Crystal Palace, Orient again, Bournemouth, Gillingham and AFC Wimbledon followed before he re-joined the Shrimpers in January 2015. He played thirteen times this season, all adding up to 735 senior competitive appearances.

That begs the question, then, why didn’t Southend look to retain him as a coach?

“Naturally people will ask that question,” Barrett admits. “I spent a big chunk of my career there and am a local lad, but it is what it is.

“This was always going to be my last season. I’m 38 this year and have been lucky enough to have had a

long career. It felt this was the right time.

“Unfortunately things didn’t end too great for me at Southend. I had some tremendous years there, they were my club growing up and it would have been nice to have gone out on a better note.

“But that’s football, things happen.

(Southend boss) Phil Brown decided to go down a different route and I wasn’t part of the plans there. It was difficult, he had made the decision and I wasn’t part of any squads.

“That’s fine and then you get on with it and look to the next chapter. I decided the time was right. I had had enough of going in every day and not preparing for a Saturday, I found that

tough.

“I had a few options to go out in January and carry on playing, there were a couple of League One clubs, a couple from League Two and some conference clubs. But I had made my mind up to finish playing.

“My passion now is coaching, I really enjoy that side of the game and that’s where my future is. This is my new career now.”

And it’s been a busy start to that new career. On Monday he went to Sheffield United with the Millwall U23s, whom he now has responsibility for after Justin Skinner’s departure last week. That finished 0-0, a far cry from the previous day when he was at White

Hart Lane, watching from the stands as Tottenham ended Millwall’s FA Cup run with a 6-0 win.

“Sometimes you’ve got to hold your hands up and say they were the better side,” Barrett says. “They have taken a lot of teams to the cleaners this year. It was always going to be a tough ask, but the boys have been tremendous to get to that stage. We put it to bed, the players will learn from it and the most important thing for us is the league.

“It was a tough afternoon, but a great learning curve, especially for me as well as a young coach coming through to see the way they play, how they move the ball and how athletic they are.

“It’s back to reality now and the grind of League One. We’ve proven we’re very strong this year and we’re looking to have a very strong end to the season.”

It’s one they hope ends with ascension to the Championship.

Barrett has recent experience of what it takes to make promotion a reality, scoring from the spot as Southend defeated Wycombe 7-6 on penalties in the 2015 League Two play-off final. “It was only a couple of years ago that we went to Wembley and won,” he recalls. “It was a fantastic experience. I’ve won a couple of play-offs and also been on the receiving end and lost.

“Hopefully I can bring that experience into the dressing room and help the lads. It’s a pressure time, this is the business end of the season and we’ve got some difficult games coming up, a heavy fixture load.

“I’ll be drawing on my experiences and what worked for me and hopefully we can get over the line this year.”

There will be some more time to take in his new surroundings this week, before his first involvement as part of Millwall’s management team at The Den, the League One meeting with Bury on Saturday.

“It’s been interesting, it’s been a bit of a whirlwind coming in, especially the last few days. But it’s been enjoyable and hopefully we can have a successful end to the campaign.”

JED WALLACE admitted witnessing up close the levels of Tottenham Hotspur last Sunday has made him question the amount of work he is doing on the training ground.

Millwall were blitzed by Spurs, losing 6-0 as Son Heung-min scored a hat-trick.

Wallace thinks the experience will ultimately benefit the squad, and was at least able to see the amusing side of some aspects of the build-up to the game.

“I said I would have taken 8-0,” he said, referring to his pre-match insistence that the league was all that mattered this season. “Now I’ve taken 6-0 and that’s quite a lot, I’m not sure I’ll be saying that again!”

“We knew how good they were.

There was a funny moment on the Thursday when the manager put the first video clip up explaining how we were going to try to press them from goal-kicks. He said ‘Everton have got it slightly wrong here’, and they literally went ping, ping, ping, ping all the way up the pitch and Kane scored a goal that was offside. The boys sort of looked at each other and had a little chuckle between ourselves.

“For me, personally, it makes me think I’m not doing enough. I’m training but not doing enough to get to the level that those boys are producing.

“It’s a good lesson to the young lads here. We’ve had a few who’ve played in the Championship and a couple in the Premier League, but staying there is even harder.

“The gaffer said after the game that some days we go out there and our passing drills will be at 70 per cent. But with those boys everything is 100 per cent. That’s why their passes were getting through to Dele Alli, because of the quality in training.”

Wallace explained what made Spurs so difficult to play against.

“I couldn’t believe with the 3-5-2 how high their press was, it was ridiculous,” he said. “We were most vulnerable in the rare moments when we had the ball. Their press was so high in the first 20 minutes we must have been caught offside about five

Goalkeeper Archer missed out on facing former club Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup last weekend, and could remain sidelined as Millwall try to put that 6-0 defeat behind them.

“In an ideal world I would have got higher to press the ball, but the transition is so quick from one side to the other.

“I’m a football fan myself and I know people always want a team to press. It’s hard enough doing it in League One. There’s only one thing you can do which is absorb the pressure and try to ride your luck, which is what we did for the first 20 minutes.

Defender’s future is up in the air

MILLWALL ARE not in contract discussions with Joe Martin, whose deal expires this summer.

He said: “It’s definitely given everyone a kick up the bum, which is maybe what we have needed. To be honest, before the Tottenham game we thought we were invincible. We conceded a goal against MK Dons and everyone was like, ‘wow, we’ve let in a goal here’.

“I honestly think we probably got away with one against MK Dons, them missing a chance at the end, Bowditch heading it over. The Tottenham game probably coincided with us getting a little bit of a kick up the bum, which we need for the last (eleven) games.”

Martin has signed two one-year deals since joining on a free transfer from Gillingham in June 2015, but has found himself down the pecking order this season.

Twenty-eight-year-old Martin was the first-choice left-back last season, making 39 appearances, but hasn’t featured since he was substituted at half-time in the Lions’ 3-0 defeat to Scunthorpe in December, their last league loss.

Millwall have offered new contracts to Fred Onyedinma, Shaun Williams and Shaun Cummings.

Lions boss Neil Harris has hinted that Martin could be on the way out at the end of the season.

He said: “Joe’s contract is up in the summer so there is always a thought process as to where it goes.

“Joe hasn’t featured for a few weeks now, but he’s very much part of our squad, very much part of day-to-day work. He’s keeping himself fit and will be ready. If the opportunity comes he’s in.

“He’s a great character and his work ethic is phenomenal. He knows he hasn’t been in the team but every day he works harder than probably anyone on the training pitch to make sure he’s ready to take his opportunity.

“He knows football can change quickly. He hasn’t been involved because of the performances of Tony Craig and the fact that I’ve got options in Shane Ferguson and Mahlon Romeo in the starting XI or coming off the bench.

“He’s been unfortunate to miss out but he’s very much part of it.

“As for next year, with Joe it’s probably not at the forefront of his mind at the moment. He wants to make sure he’s focused and he’s working to get back into the team.

“Joe’s situation will take care of itself towards the end of the season if not in the summer.”

They have very good individual players like James Vaughan. It’s going to be a testing game for us.

“They’ve gone to a five-man defence. Every opposition at The Den now seems to play five against us to give us respect. They have a defensive mindset to be harder to beat than they were before.

The fixture will be former Southend defender Adam Barrett’s first in the league since he joined Millwall’s coaching staff.

“First and foremost, his experience, his mentality and his attitude will be great for everybody from U18s up,” Harris said. “He’s hugely respected by my dressing room for his performances in recent years and his physical attributes to still be playing until 37.

“He’s a huge addition for us. His leadership will be key to us now, he

NEW MILLWALL first-team development coach Adam Barrett turned down approaches from a number of other clubs to join the Lions.

Barrett, 37, retired as a player with Southend last month and was part of Millwall’s coaching staff at White Hart Lane last Sunday.

Barrett, who will also coach the U23s after Justin Skinner left the club last week, was contacted by

Millwall boss Neil Harris after he gave up playing.

“In football word soon gets around,” Barrett explained. “My phone didn’t stop after I had done it. It was quite overwhelming. I had options, which was lovely.

“I was looking at my options but this was a no-brainer. This was the one that really excited me. To come in and work for the gaffer and Dave Livermore and Scott Fitzgerald, that was really appealing to me.

“We started talking and it happened pretty quickly. There were a few people talking to us, I won’t say who.

“But when this came up this was the one I wanted. It excited me and I couldn’t wait to come and join.”

Barrett and Harris knew each other previously and both live in Southend. Barrett completed his Uefa B coaching badge with former Lions defender and coach Andy Frampton, and links up again with Steve Kavanagh, who was Southend’s chief executive before he joined Millwall.

“I know Steve, so the contact was quite easy then,” Barrett said.

“Steve is very good at his job and spoke highly of the football club. It was nice because you come in and

there are a few familiar faces that you’ve worked with before, people like Laurence Bloom as well, the fitness coach I worked with at Southend.

“It just makes settling in easy. I want to get stuck into it now, on the grass every day doing what I enjoy.

It was before I turned 30 when I started to take coaching seriously.

You realise your career isn’t going to go on forever.

“It was good to get to 37. Football is my passion, it has been my life.

This opportunity came up here and I jumped at it, I couldn’t wait to get started.”

The Lions’ seventeen-game unbeaten run came to an end as Spurs ran riot, and Harris said he told his squad afterwards to put the same intensity Spurs showed into preparations for the League One clash with Bury on Saturday.

“First and foremost Spurs were brilliant,” Harris said. “I think we could have played any formation, any personnel, we could have been any opposition, we could have been Man City at the weekend – Spurs would have taken anyone to the cleaners, they were that impressive.

“I said to the players I was proud what we had achieved in this competition, I never would have dreamed we would have beaten three Premier League teams.

“There’s dented pride, definitely, because of the scoreline.

“Is there inspiration for us from that game? Definitely, because of the standard Spurs set. If you look at their professionalism and mentality in how they approached the game, their physical attributes and then their ability, those four things were immense at the weekend.

“I said to the players, every passing drill, every training session, every finishing exercise has to be to the intensity Tottenham showed.

“So we can use the lessons we learned Sunday in abundance. We take inspiration from what we have achieved in the competition.

“We quickly put it to bed, take pride in what we have done and look forward to getting back to league action.”
