POLICE ARE offering £20,000 for the public’s help to get a man involved with “disturbing” and brutally violent attacks on lone women a year ago in Peckham off the streets.

Police are continuing to offer the reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person responsible for the attacks which happened between December 2015 and January this year.

HERE IS little doubt that it is shocking for a young mum to hide a deadly weapon under her baby’s cot, yet fourteen years is too harsh a sentence.

For officers from groups like Trident, combating the problem of gun crime on our streets, the use of women as a tool to keep hold of the guns poses real issues in gathering evidence to nail those ultimately responsible.

It is for this reason that Judge Downing handed down such a severe sentence.

However, from what we know 21-yearold Kelly Kepple admitted she had the firearm as soon as the Trident officers entered her Walworth home and was not guilty of possession of ammunition.

Interestingly, almost at the same time in nearby Wandsworth a 27-year-old woman, Tahira Nelson-Warburton, was also arrested and has since been sentenced for keeping a shotgun in her wardrobe, as well as ammunition, and was given a five year jail term at the very same crown court.

The difference in sentencing should be looked at, as well as the circumstances that are seeing more and more young woman being used by dangerous gangs as the perfect way to preserve a lively underground gun culture in London.

Historian’s passing is a huge loss tephen Humphrey’s passing is a huge loss to the borough.

Although not a well-known face to many, he was a well of information on the borough’s long and storied history.

Working in Southwark’s local history library, he was a source of information for any researchers, historians or interested members of the public who approached him.

As the borough’s archivist, it was his understanding of the many documents and records that assisted anyone looking into the area’s rich past of individual family history and that will be hard to replace.

He also wrote eight books on the borough, many of which line the office shelves of Southwark News.

Stephen was a friend of this paper and was always on hand to help out with any historical queries our journalists may have had whilst writing our weekly History features.

With his passing we lose a huge source of information on the borough’s history, but we also lose, as his friends have said a ‘true gentleman’.

AN EAST Dulwich couple who cycled 2,000 miles across the US to raise money for a stillbirth charity after they tragically lost their own daughter are back on home soil.

When Orla was born, Andy and Michelle had prints of her footprints and handprints taken, which they copied onto tags for their journey. They left these at the different places they visited throughout the trip

Andy and Michelle Cottle, who journeyed from Vancouver to San Diego, have raised over £12,174 for charity Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Deaths) – and are still counting.

The couple were struck with tragedy in May when their baby daughter, Orla, was still born. Within a week, they knew it was imperative they do something to cultivate hope in their situation.

“We needed to get away. We needed to have time to process things and time to be alone,” said Michelle, 34.

They embarked on their journey on August 15, with Andy cycling and Michelle driving beside him for support in an SUV. “I’d never driven before in the US,” said Michelle, “It was nerve wracking. Everything’s bigger – the cars, the roads.”

The peace and beauty of the route, which saw the couple descend along the West Coast of the US, was exactly what they needed as they grieved.

“Life can never be normal after you lose a baby,” said Michelle, “And you don’t come back from a trip like this recovered.

But it does help you to start the healing process.”

When Orla was born, Andy and Michelle had prints of her footprints and handprints taken, which they copied onto tags for their journey. They left these at the different places they visited throughout the trip.

“It was our way of taking her to these beautiful places,” said Michelle.

Along the route, the pair slept in motels

which actually are “like what you see in the movies” and kept their motivation up on difficult days by remembering why they’d decided to set off in the first place. “We just had so many lovely messages every day,” said Michelle.

The pair have received overwhelming support since they launched their Justgiving page in May. “People say that social media can be bad,” said Andy, “But it’s been really helpful for us.”

Michelle has been documenting the pair’s journey on a blog and on Instagram. “We don’t know most of the people who’ve donated,” said Michelle, “It’s been amazing. People were just touched by what we were doing.”

Michelle has also found herself become a figure of inspiration and hope for other

women who are going through similar experiences. “People who’ve lost babies after we started the journey contact me and say ‘it’s so helpful to see what you’re doing’.”

“We’ve been touched by the kindness of strangers,” said Michelle.

The trip also served up an unexpected turn of events for the couple – they discovered on the road that Michelle was pregnant.

She’s due in four months.

“It was wonderful news – but hard on the road some days with the morning sickness,” said Michelle.

A SINGLE Bermondsey mother of a disabled child vulnerable to infections has had to endure sewage pouring out of her toilet despite asking Wandle to help.

Chantelle Roye, of Cooperage House in Long Lane, has complained of sewage from her neighbours flowing onto her ground floor since she moved there in May, but claims her calls for help have been “ignored”.

“The pump outside does not work, which means everyone’s waste comes into my flat,” said Chantelle.

“They [Wandle] sent someone out five times but they were the wrong people each time. Environmental Health had to get involved and then Wandle put me up in a hotel.

“My eight-year-old has Epidermolysis Bullosa which means she is missing a layer of her skin so it breaks easily and causes blisters. The exposure means she can’t be near germs.

“Wandle have been ignoring me about the problem, saying I need to sort the plumber out.

“I also have a five-year-old and twoyear-old. It’s disgusting that they treat us like that for so long.

“It has ruined all of my stuff.

Everything on the floor is ruined. I was without a toilet for days and had to take a bucket outside like in Victorian times.

It’s been a nightmare.

“I feel stressed and alarmed because of it and need support. It’s our first Christmas here and we might have to

be in a hotel.”

Southwark Council’s Environmental Health took action this week using section 43 of the Housing Act 2004, meaning no one can use the premises for sleeping or “any other residential purpose” due to there being an “imminent risk of serious harm” to the health and safety of the occupiers.

A Wandle spokesperson said: “The wellbeing of residents is always our number one priority. After visiting Chantelle’s home and assessing the situation, we quickly made arrangements to temporarily move her and her family whilst we investigated and resolved the problem.

“The pumps, which serve the entire

building, have been breaking down because nappies, wet wipes and cooking fat have been flushed into the system.

“We have cleared the pumps on numerous occasions and have written to all the households at Cooperage House asking them not to flush such items.

“We understand this is a very difficult and distressing situation for Chantelle and her family and we continue to do everything we can to support her and the other affected households.

“We have been in regular contact with the London Borough of Southwark and are working with them to return the homes back to a good standard.”

The vote comes after the council’s Business and Overview Scrutiny Panel called in the decision by the cabinet in September to approve plans for a 2,400 home regeneration project around Millwall’s land – over questions being raised about the intentions of developers Renewal’s anonymous owners.

The re-vote kept being postponed, however, after an external investigation was launched into a document relating to one of the owners of property developers Renewal.

A report published by the council ahead of the re-vote has now revealed that the document in question was a sales brochure put together by commercial property consultants Lambert Smith Hampton (LSH), on behalf of International Holdings Limited (IHL) – one of Renewal’s owners.

The document outlines possible investment scenarios for the regeneration project, as well as a possible disposal of their stake in the scheme.

Following the investigation, it was established: “IHL engaged LSH in April/May 2015 to advise on the New Bermondsey scheme as an investment opportunity.

“LSH’s original proposed terms of engagement to IHL covered a review of a range of investment scenarios

with potential investors, including outright acquisition, acquisition of IHL’s shareholding, JV structures, partial investment, and later stage option structures.

“LSH noted that at this stage their objective was to source “interest in principle” commitment from potential investors.

“The scope of LSH’s mandate was amended in June 2015 so as to focus exclusively on introducing and brokering financial investors into a fundraising.

“LSH also noted at the time that IHL might decide to sell part or all of their stake in that process.

“It is evident from subsequent correspondence that IHL’s objective was to attract investment into the project, not to achieve an outright sale of its interest in it, and that wished to remain involved in the project.

“In February 2016, IHL confirmed to LSH that it had decided to put a stop to the search for a funding partner until after the CPO process, and decided not to extend LSH’s instruction.

“LSH have confirmed that during the course of the instruction, they produced the LSH Brochure, but that they had not been instructed by IHL or the Renewal Group or any individual in the Group to prepare it, nor was the LSH Brochure seen or approved by IHL or Renewal.”

The report ahead of the re-vote, put together by the council’s Executive Director for Resources and Regeneration, Head of Planning and Head of Law, concluded that “officers remain of the view that there is a compelling case in the public interest” for the CPO to go ahead.

Two hospitalised after ‘knife fight’ TWO MEN were taken to hospital on Monday after reports of a fight involving a man with a “long bladed weapon” near Peckham Library.

Police, including firearm officers, were called at 4:47pm to reports of the fight, where two men aged in their 30s were found suffering slash injuries.

Police appeal after teen sexual assault

PECKHAM: Police are appealing for information concerning an investigation of a sexual offence last week.

DONKEY RIDES, a very tall Santa and an ice rink were just some of the festive attractions that lured people to Bermondsey’s annual Christmas event on the Blue.

Families turned out to enjoy face painting, a UB40 tribute, food, Irish dancing and other treats last Sunday afternoon. The event, now in its sixth year, was sponsored by the Bermondsey BID. More than a hundred pounds was raised for London Evelina’s Children’s Hospital

BID to reduce business burglaries

LONDON BRIDGE: Free kits to help protect businesses in the area from burglaries during the winter are being handed out.

Team London Bridge is taking steps to “eradicate commercial burglary” within the BID (Business Improvement District) by offering businesses forensic marking kits for their equipment.

The kits are supplied by SelectaDNA and include a synthetic DNA solution which can be applied to computers, TVs, mobile phones and cameras.

Accompanied by signs at the premises and on the items marked, it is hoped it will serve as a strong enough deterrent – but if not, the property should be easily found and criminals identified.

Medieval doorway to finally receive blue plaque CAMBERWELL

AFTER SEVEN years of renovations, the latest addition to the Southwark Blue Plaque Scheme will be unveiled by the Mayo of Southwark this morning.

The Medieval St Giles’ Church doorway is the newest addition to the scheme’s list of local honourees, which celebrates the achievements of people and places in the borough.

Most of the Old St Giles’ Church, built in 1154, was destroyed in a fire in 1841.

The porch was the only thing to survive.

It was publicly polled as a plaque winner back in 2009 but extensive renovations were required before the big unveiling could take place.

“The council were using the doorway itself as a binstore,” explained Veronica Alden from Southwark Heritage Association, “and people were using it to urinate. At one point it was derelict. A lot of the stonework was knocked off. We

had to raise funds to pay for the renovations.”

In the following seven years, Southwark Heritage Association secured funds from the council’s Cleaner, Greener, Safer programme and enlisted the help of a specialist to draw up work plans and assess what needed to be done.

“These renovations have probably taken longer than any of the others in the blue plaque scheme, we had to get a lot of specialists in,” said Veronica, “That makes it special.”

“My husband went and took photos all the way through the work, through its stages. A lot of work went into getting that restored,” she said.

The Southwark Blue Plaque scheme was launched by Southwark News and Southwark Heritage Association, with the support of Southwark Council, because the borough’s heritage spots were struggling to get recognition via the English Heritage blue plaque scheme.

Conditions of the pan-London scheme are that honoured sites must still be

standing. Many of Southwark’s sites were destroyed or damaged during the blitz, making it difficult for them to get the nod.

Since its 2003 inception, the Southwark scheme has awarded over 50 plaques across the borough. “The scheme is very important because otherwise, we’ll lose our heritage,” said Veronica.

The much anticipated unveiling will take place at 11.30 this morning (Thursday, December 8), at Benhill Road, Camberwell.

A PECKHAM drug dealer who threw acid in a man’s face in Essex has been jailed for nine years.

Leban Elmi, 22, of Kirkwood Road denied the charge of causing grievous bodily harm but was found guilty by a jury at Southend Crown Court last week.

Elmi was also sentenced to eighteen months for affray and twelve months for possession of an offensive weapon, to run concurrently, after previously admitting the charges.

He was jailed too for three-and-a-half years, to run consecutively, after

admitting a charge of possession with intent to supply crack cocaine.

Elmi and accomplice, Archie Harding, 19 from Southend, went into a convenience store in North Road, Westcliff, on June 30 this year, armed with a bottle of acid.

They sought out their victim, a 19year-old also from Southend, and chased him to the back of the store where they threw the corrosive liquid at him before fleeing the scene.

The victim suffered chemical burns to his left arm, ear and hand. He was taken to a nearby medical centre by a passerby and has since undergone extensive treatment to his injuries.

London Mayor opens consultation on cycle superhighway in the north of the borough

LONDON MAYOR Sadiq Khan has announced plans to start a consultation on cycle superhighway four from Tower Bridge to Greenwich next year.

The Mayor released a statement saying that he will be “the most procycling Mayor London has ever had,” committing to spending £770m on cycling over his five years in office.

The most obvious route for the new superhighway would take it through the top of Southwark before passing into Lewisham.

Mayor Khan said: “With record amounts of money now committed for cycling in London, we will continue to work over the coming months developing further detailed

plans for making cycling a safe and obvious choice for Londoners of all ages and backgrounds.”

Superhighways were introduced by previous Mayor Boris Johnson, and often segregate cyclists from road traffic through kerbs and separate paths.

There had been concerns that Khan would not be as committed to improving cycling infrastructure as his predecessor, but the new TfL Business Plan proposes spending about 5.5 per cent of the budget on cycling.

Ashok Sinha, CEO of the London Cycling Campaign, welcomed the announcement: “This unprecedented investment in cycling shows the Mayor is serious about meeting his promises.

“It will make London a better, greener, healthier and less congested city.”

Only urgent kids’ cases to be treated due to lack of beds

TWO SOUTHWARK hospitals who treat children in intensive care units have been told to only treat urgent cases due to a lack of available beds.

In an email from NHS regional director Will Huxter, hospitals in London who provide the services were asked to delay some planned operations to free up space for emergencies.

Paediatric Intensive Care is a specialised service which is provided in seven hospital across London, with more than half of the demand for the beds being unplanned and higher admissions during winter.

Dr Mark Spencer, NHS England (London) Medical Director, said: “Winter is always a busy time for the NHS and we manage this by carefully monitoring demand for services, like paediatric intensive care beds.

“During these busy periods, it is not unusual for hospitals to reduce planned surgery particularly where intensive care is required which is why we have sought confirmation from London’s hospitals that they are taking action.

“This is to ensure that the sickest patients can receive the care they need when they need it most.”

Because of the unplanned nature of this service and because some children require specific treatment which is not provided in all hospitals they have to travel to receive the specialist care they need. A national review of paediatric intensive care is currently underway and will consider how best to ensure that children are seen in the right place, at the right time and close to home wherever possible.

TRIBUTES HAVE been paid to the much loved Southwark historian, Stephen Humphrey, who passed away last week.

Stephen, who was born near Elephant and Castle in 1952, was well known for his impressive knowledge of local history, and worked for Southwark Council from January 1978 to June 2010, being awarded the Freedom of the Borough in May 2012.

He wrote eight books on the area, including Elephant and Castle: A History, and Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Remembered.

Cllr Peter John, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “Stephen was an esteemed, prolific and influential local historian who was very much respected and loved by his colleagues and the local communities he worked with.

“It was an honour to award his service to the council with the Freedom of the Borough in 2012 and I know he will be very much missed.”

Our thoughts are with Stephen's family and I know that he will be very much missed by all who knew him.”

Author John Constable said: “It’s very sad to learn of the death of Stephen Humphrey, archivist at Southwark local history library and a local legend in his own lifetime.

Our ‘Enry’s Ferrari gets auctioned off

BOXING LEGEND Sir Henry Cooper’s 1973 Ferrari 365 GT and a pair of signed gloves went under the hammer at a Coys auction this week, as part of their yearly True Greats auction.

The car owned by Henry in the early 1980s visited the Fellowship Inn on the Bellingham Estate in Lewisham where he trained before his knockdown of Muhammad Ali on June 18, 1963.

A model statue of Henry was also flogged to raise money for the London Ex-Boxers Association.

Henry later became friends with Ali, who passed away this year, who admitted he was hit so hard in fight that “his ancestors in Africa felt it.”

Following his retirement from the sport, Henry continued his career as a television and radio personality and to date remains the only boxer to be awarded a knighthood.

Chris Routledge, CEO of Coys, said: “He loved his cars, was a great motorsport enthusiast and at one point even did some club racing alongside his great friend Graham Hill.

“Known as Enry’s Ferrari by various marque specialists, the provenance of this car makes it a sound investment and could be the ideal Christmas treat for discerning collectors.”

Triathlete helps launch cheerleading for over 45s

TRIATHLETE ANNIE Emmerson helped launch a new fitness programme in Elephant last week offering cheerleading to over 45s.

The weekly Silver Tuesdays sessions, at the new Castle leisure centre, are coordinated by Silverfit, the charity which specialises in fun and sociable fitness for over 45s.

Sessions cost just £1 and participants can enjoy an hour of exercise, choosing between cheerleading or indoor cycling.

Sessions start at 1.30pm.

Silverfit runs activities in eight London boroughs and they launched their first

Southwark programme in 2004.

“We had a lot of people coming to the launch at the Castle,” said Zsofia Szekere, Project Manager at Silverfit, “We had Annie Emerson doing the cheerleading.

People were really excited to see her.”

“We chose the cheerleading because it’s proven to be very popular. The cycling is great cardio and good for the joints,” she said. Zsofia highlights that Silver Tuesdays are about more than just exercise. “It gives people an opportunity to get together. People usually make friends at sessions and that’s why they keep coming back. It’s a social thing as well.” Silverfit run sessions at other venues in the week. John Samuel, a friend of Henry’s, said after his death: “When asked to explain Henry's enduring popularity, I would explain that if he were to be offered £10,000 to make an after-dinner speech, and it clashed with an unpaid appearance at a boys' club when he had given his word that he would attend, Henry would unhesitatingly refuse the fat cheque and be there for the youngsters.

“He was a good boxer, but an outstanding man.”

£20,000 REWARD for serial attacker of lone women PECKHAM

POLICE ARE offering £20,000 for the public’s help to get a man involved with “disturbing” and brutally violent attacks on lone women a year ago in Peckham off the streets.

Police are continuing to offer the reward for information leading to the identification, arrest and prosecution of the person responsible for the attacks which happened between December 2015 and January this year.

All the offences were against lone females on foot in the street and occurred within a four mile radius of each other.

They all took place in the early hours of a weekend or public holiday, with the level of violence appears to have escalated each time.

The method of the attack was similar in each one, with a man attacking the victims from behind and physically assaulting them.

The first attack took place on Friday, December 4 2015 in Commercial Way, SE15 between 1:15am and 2:15am

where the 31-year-old victim suffered a head injury.

The second incident was on Sunday, December 13 2015 in Hanover Park, SE15 between 6:15am and 6:45am, where the 30-year-old victim was assaulted to the point of unconsciousness and was discovered lying in the street by a passerby.

The third assault took place on New Year's Day 2016, in Creekside/Deptford Church Street, SE8, where the 18-yearold victim suffered serious injuries to her head and face.

All three were originally being investigated separately but intelligence work on the incidents led to them being linked.

Detective Chief Inspector Zena Marshall, who is leading the investigation the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: "These vicious unprovoked attacks left the victims very shaken. Even though it's been a year, the victims still vividly remember the attacks and they are still very distressed. We have released CCTV of the Hanover Park attack on Sunday, 13 December 2015. Anyone watching it

Caught on CCTV at Hanover Park cannot fail to be shocked by its brutality, and therefore understand the need to catch the person responsible.

"I would urge anyone with any information on who the attacker may be, or anyone with any information about the attacks, to come forward and help our investigation.

“It was coming up to a year and we haven’t made a significant breakthrough.

It’s really just getting it back out.

Somebody might recognise the CCTV and pictures. It’s difficult to say [about motives] with these events as we don’t know why they started or why they’ve stopped and we don’t want to speculate.

and absolutely get him off the streets. We give safety advice to people when they are out and about, and at late at night. We are keen to catch him as it’s a serious attack.

“The footage of one of the attacks is disturbing. Hopefully someone will recognise them or their movements.”

Whilst detectives are keeping an open mind regarding the suspect and motive, they cannot rule out a sexual motive for the attacks.

In two of the incidents (Hanover Park and Creekside) the victims had clothing removed.

Officers had previously released CCTV of the Hanover Park attack on Sunday,

December 13 2015 and continue to appeal for anyone who with any information about the attacks to come forward. Appeals also featured on BBC's Crimewatch in March.

On Friday, August 13 detectives arrested a 39-year-old man at an address in Nottingham. He was later released with no further action being taken against him.

Victim: Beware of the moped riding mobile phone thieves

A VICTIM who had their mobile phone stolen in moped mugging while waiting for a bus has called for others to be aware of their surroundings.

The incident took place at around 9pm in Abbey Street last month, and after being told by the police that there was not much they could do, they are warning others.

The victim, who asked not to be named, said: “They took my phone after pushing me and drove off. It happens quite frequently in the area.

“They are targeting people who are by themselves. I called the police when it happened on a Friday and after they called me and said they had closed the case as they didn’t have enough to go on.

“I want other people to be made aware of this as it could happen to anyone. I only got my phone out to see where the bus was and wasn’t waving it around or anything.”

Detective Chief Inspector David Rutter, of Southwark Police, said

they are “working hard” to keep the public safe and are making the streets “hostile territory” for criminals on mopeds, motorbikes and bicycles.

“Our officers patrol daily in cars and on motorcycles and our team of detectives conduct investigations and covert operations to tackle these and other crimes,” he said.

“I want to get the message out to members of the public about the importance of remaining vigilant when using your phone in the street.

It can be snatched in an instant.

"It is important that the public are aware of their surroundings at all times and protect their personal property.

“I would urge people to consider using a hands-free device to make a call and try to avoid texting or using apps by the roadside, where they are most vulnerable to snatch-theft.

"If the public see any suspicious activity or have any information about who is committing these crimes please call police in an emergency on 999 or 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

A CHRISTMAS fundraiser for Bermondsey’s Ruby Longman saw more than a thousand pounds raised in just two hours last weekend.

Held at the Blue Anchor pub in Southwark Park Road, the event saw Santa and a raffle including signed Millwall shirts and play-off tickets.

Ruby suffers from the rare Rett syndrome, which has prevented her

from walking and talking since she was a baby.

“We all had a fantastic night. Simon Davis and Arthur Rodriguez and wife Margaret are truly amazing,” said Ruby’s mum, Timi Samples.

“We can't thank them enough for all they have done for Ruby. It's so appreciated - Simon is like Ruby's guardian angel.

“We thank the Blue Anchor pub for allowing us to hold the event there and all the wonderful people for raising money for Ruby for Christmas.”

£10,000 for Ruby, ten, over the course of this year so she could get a computer to help her communicate.

The new computer made by Smartbox was fitted in September at Alfred Salter Primary School, where she had the chance to play games and write a story.

Simon Davis, an organiser, said: “It was a great success. We raised £1,118 in two hours, it was great.

“We’ve got another event planned for March 4 for Ruby’s birthday charity bash. It will be a charity football match with the aim to raise £3,000 to send Ruby on a holiday.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, was strongly opposed to the policy, along with other councillors from both Labour and the Liberal Democrats.

The Government’s proposals would have required councils to collect higher rents from council tenants earning over £40,000, with all the additional money going straight to the Treasury.

Southwark’s Labour councillors have been campaigning against the policy and Cllr Cryan wrote to housing minister Gavin Barwell to raise concerns about local authorities being forced to means test council tenants.

Cllr Cryan said: “Southwark Labour councillors are completely opposed to Pay to Stay and we have been campaigning against the Government’s plans to make it mandatory for councils.

“Pay to Stay would lead to huge rent

hikes for working families living in council homes, so I’m delighted that the Tories have scrapped their plans and I can confirm Southwark will not be implementing the policy.

“We will continue to lobby the Government to drop their other disastrous housing policies in the Housing and Planning Act, including the end of lifetime tenancies and the forced sale of council homes.

“I would urge also housing associations in Southwark to follow the council’s lead and confirm that they will not implement Pay to Stay.”

Current rules say social landlords can charge tenants with incomes over £60,000 market or near-market rate.

Councillor Anood Al-Samerai, Leader of the Liberal Democrat opposition on Southwark Council, said: “It’s great that the Government has caved in and that Pay-to-Stay will not now be forced on Southwark’s council tenants.

“But Labour should be a bit less arrogant and remember that there were many local residents and groups campaigning hard to stop pay-to-stay.

“Tenants also have concerns about the loss of council housing here in Southwark and it is important that councillors listen to these concerns.”

‘Let council build more affordable homes’ SOUTHWARK COUNCIL’S leader has called on the Government to let local authorities build more affordable homes, while giving evidence at the Communities and Local Government Committee.

Appearing before the Committee last week as part of a panel of local government representatives, Cllr Peter John highlighted the challenges the council faces in delivering 11,000 council homes over 30 years while funding is cut.

Cllr John said: “National changes to the funding of homebuilding mean that local authorities face significant

financial challenges and rely increasingly on private sector partnerships to deliver new homes.

“In Southwark we have successfully used these partnerships to deliver new affordable homes, but local authorities face a real challenge in ensuring developers build the right kind of housing to meet local need.

“Changes to national housing legislation and uncertainty over Government policies are making this even more difficult.”

Anood Al-Samerai, leader of the Southwark Lib Dems, said: “Southwark should concentrate on getting its own house in order rather than just grandstanding in Parliament.”

Southwark has London’s second highest HIV diagnosis rate

SOUTHWARK STILL has the second highest diagnosis rate for HIV in London, new figures have revealed.

The data indicates that there were 153 new cases diagnosed in 2015, which equates to 60.1 per 100,000 people.

The UK average is 11.4 per 100,000 people.

The only London borough with a higher rate of new diagnosis is neighbouring Lambeth, which had 170 new cases, or 62.9 per 100,000 people.

The data was released on December

1, coinciding with World Aids Day, as part of Public Health England’s annual snapshot HIV in the UK 2016 Pan-London diagnosis rates have also raised concerns, with almost half (43 per cent) of all new HIV diagnoses in the UK in 2015 being in London. It’s estimated that 4,420 people in London have HIV but are unaware that they’re affected.

The new data comes just months after it was announced that Southwark CCG would be withdrawing funding from the Terrance Higgins Trust, who’d provided the go-to counselling and advice organisation for people living with HIV in the borough.

Funds have been re-directed into mainstream services such as the Citizens Advice Bureau but staff at Terrence Higgins raised concerns that generalist services would not have the capacity to provide the specialist advice required to people living with HIV. A spokesperson for Terrence Higgins Trust said: “New statistics from Public Health England show that Southwark continues to be one of the worst-hit areas for HIV in the country. This comes just months after it was sadly confirmed that our HIV specialist advice and counselling services were to be cut in the borough.

“In addition, HIV is a stigmatised and complex condition, and we know that many people living with HIV are worried about stigma, confidentiality and outdated knowledge when dealing with staff in mainstream services. It is therefore concerning that people living with HIV in the borough will no longer have access to specialist services.”

To combat prevalence in the borough, Southwark Council has introduced the award-winning SH:24 web service, which allows people to confidentially order a free home testing kit for a range of STIs, including HIV. The website also offers free sexual health information and advice.

Southwark are also working with neighbouring boroughs on campaigns such as Do It London, which is a citywide sexual health campaign aimed at increasing HIV testing and promoting safer sex.

Cllr Maisie Anderson, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure, said: “The importance of early diagnosis can’t be overestimated as HIV can now be managed effectively with the right treatments if it is diagnosed early.

“But it is also vital that people take responsibility for their own health by practising safer sex and getting themselves tested.”

AN 18-YEAR-OLD former Dulwich Hamlet youth coach has become the youngest person in Europe to achieve the UEFA B coaching certificate.

Finn Roberts-Bond, who’s been coaching just two years, is now qualified to teach Pro Academy football – meaning he can teach in the youth wings of professional football clubs.

“This is the proudest moment of my life,” said Finn, who lives in Brixton, “When I was sixteen-years-old, I never would have thought I’d be here [as a UEFA B qualified coach] two years later. The feeling is just unbelieveable.”

Finn first dipped his toe into the coaching game in 2014, when he achieved his Level 1 and 2 England FA qualifications while at Brixton’s St Matthews Project “I decided to pack in playing football and go into coaching,” said Finn, “I had the belief that I could get into the top level as a coach but I knew my opportunities as a player would be more limited.”

With two FA qualifications under his belt and an appetite whet, Finn took the step to approach Dulwich Hamlet First Team’s Manager, Gavin Rose for coaching opportunities. Gavin offered him the position of coaching

Dulwich’s ASPIRE Academy.

“Getting a role at Dulwich was special for me because of how long I have watched the club for,” said Finn, “I felt proud to be working for the local club.”

Shortly later, he was offered a paid coaching role with Chelsea’s Foundation and Development Centre and his first senior role in October 2015, coaching the First Team Coach at Whyteleafe FC, a position he held for a year.

“My plan now is to do the UEFA A License – maybe I can be the youngest to achieve that, too!” said Finn.

“My dream is to be able to coach full time and make a living off it. It’s everyone’s dream to do what they really love, isn’t it?”

Who’s been Finn’s biggest inspiration? “Jose Mourhino. I like him because he never made it to the top level as a player – he took himself to the top level as a coach, though. I admire him. I’d love to make it to his level.”

And off the field? “My mum! She’s my biggest supporter and my biggest fan. My dad died when I was eleven and since then, she’s been my mum and my dad.”

Finn is emphatic that age needn’t be a barrier in coaching. “At this level of qualification, you need to show an understanding of the game and your intelligence as a coach. Which is why it’s usually people who are older than me who get it. But if you work hard,

Borough second for startup funding SOUTHWARK: Southwark has received the second most amount of startup funding alongside Lambeth, according to research carried out by the Start Up Loans Company.

The borough received some £3.9m since 2012, just behind Hackney which received £4.9m over the same period.

The event is funded by The Bermondsey Square Community Fund and also has a contribution from the St Olave and Bermondsey United Charities.

It will take place on Sunday December 18 will run from 12pm until 7pm.

THE LONG-AWAITED Peckham Levels project has taken a stride forward this week after Makeshift, the project’s manager, signed a lease with Southwark Council.

Construction can now begin on the site, which will be transformed from an underused carpark into a thriving arts, culture and community space Southwark Council granted planning permission for the project in July but construction was delayed while lease agreements were negotiated with the existing businesses on the premises, including Frank’s Café and Peckham Plex.

All of these businesses will be remaining on-site and operating as usual. They have separate lease deals with Southwark Council.

Makeshift are a team of designers and entrepreneurs who are responsible for designing, delivering and managing the Peckham Levels project up until its doors close in July 2023. They are the team behind Pop Brixton, which is home to 55 local businesses.

The Peckham Levels development will be spread over seven levels of car-park and cover more than 900,000 square feet. It’s thought that the space will house a working community of up to 600 people.

The creative workspaces will include 50 private and shared studios, a handful of larger offices, shared making spaces, manual workshops, music rehearsal studios, print rooms and ceramics facilities.

The site will also include open public spaces with food and drink outlets and a community café, an event and exhibition venue, and wellbeing and fitness studios.

Cllr Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: "We're delighted to see this key project get underway which will create 600 jobs in the heart of Peckham.”

“Peckham is a huge success already and making better use of the unused parts of the multi storey car park will help the area go from strength to strength, and I look forward to seeing the Peckham Levels opening next year."

Applications for space will be open on March 1 2017 and close April 30. Members will be able to move in shortly before doors open to the public in August.

Crown Court judge gives mum Kelly Kepple 14-years as a warning to others

A WALWORTH woman who stored a sawn-off shotgun under her child's cot has been sentenced to fourteen years in prison.

Kelly Kepple (pictured), 21, of Carter Street was convicted and sentenced on December 5 after a four-day-trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

While being interviewed, Kepple admitted taking possession of the gun for a man weeks earlier and was being paid £65 a week to look after it. She was found guilty of possession of the sawn-off

shotgun with intent to enable another to endanger life, but not guilty of possession of the ammunition.

The court heard how on August 15, detectives from Trident and Area Crime Command executed a search warrant under the firearms act at Keppel's address.

When officers entered, she informed them she had a firearm upstairs in her bedroom which turned out to be sawn-off shotgun in a sports bag hidden under her baby’s cot.

The baby was not in the cot at the time of the search and later examination showed the shotgun could quickly be made viable.

Kepple was arrested for possession of a firearm and was charged on August 16, being kept in custody to appear at court.

DC Mick Grimshaw said: "When she passed sentence Her Honour Judge Downing stated: ‘This sentence should be a deterrent to any others looking after firearms.'

"I want to reiterate that warning.

If you look after a firearm you will be treated the same as those they belong to.

“The storing of a deadly weapon is a serious criminal offence and the consequences are severe. I sincerely hope this sentence will make others think twice before getting involved."

The Jamaica Road Japanese Restaurant was bestowed with the title on December 5 at Just Eat’s starstudded British Takeaway Awards.

Poppy Hanna beat off four other South London finalists, including Village Tandoori and Jaflong, both of East Dulwich.

As well as gaining the impressive accolade, Poppy Hanna walked away with a £1,000 cash prize.

Owner Nadaraj Sivashanker attended the award ceremony with his wife. “It was a fantastic feeling just to be nominated by our customers and being shortlisted, “ said Nadaraj, “We

went to the awards ceremony just to enjoy ourselves and could not ever dream that we will actually be on stage and picking up an award.”

Poppy Hanna opened in 2006 and has strived over the years to raise the profile and appeal of Japanese cuisine locally. Their signature dish is Lemon Sole with Japanese ponzu sauce, which is deep-fried sole dipped in the citrus-based ponzu sauce.

Takeaway Awards were identified via public poll. Winners were selected by a panel of judges, including celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott and star of Dragons' Den, Sarah Willingham. The awards took place at The Savoy Hotel and were hosted by comedian Rob Bryden.

The winner of the ultimate nod – Best British Takeaway – was Lutonbased fried chicken shop Chicken George.

Cinema will remain open for business

PECKAM: Popular independent cinema Peckhamplex will remain open despite work to the neighbouring multi-storey car park, Southwark Council has confirmed.

The upper levels of the multi-storey car park on Rye Lane are being redeveloped by the council, in partnership with Make Shift, into over 28,000 sq ft of studios and media for start up businesses.

During the building work the car park will be reduced to just 50 spaces, but this will be open 24 hours a day, with free use in evenings and at weekends.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “Peckhamplex is an important social and cultural amenity and the council intends to ensure that it continues to thrive.

“As the car park building remains an area of possible redevelopment in the next few years, the council is committed to working with Peckhamplex to identify potential options for relocation within the central Peckham area.”

Peckhamplex Director John Reiss, along with Simone Brown, Marianne Gary and Rakesh Makhecha were recently honoured by the Mayor of Southwark for their services to the borough.

Mr Reiss said: “Peckhamplex values its loyal, local clients and the increasing number of customers coming from across London who can enjoy a wide range of the latest film releases at affordable prices.”

Man jailed for hold ups on Bureau de Changes

A HOMELESS armed robber from Southwark who targeted Bureau de Changes at travel agents between July and October has been jailed for thirteen years.

Robert Darling, 37, (pictured) stole thousands in his robberies in Upminster, Bexleyheath and Kent and was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Tuesday.

In the robberies, Darling threatened members of staff with a firearm and ordered them to empty the safes of money.

He was detained by officers from the Flying Squad at a Rotherhithe address on October 21 – where the gun and money from the Upminster offence were recovered.

He admitted the following at court: - Robbery on September 18, at Thomson Travel Agents, Broadway, Bexleyheath.

- Robbery on October 21, at

Thomson Travel Agents, Bell Corner, Upminster.

- Robbery on July 8 at Thomas Cook, Mount Pleasant Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

- Possession imitation firearm on September 18, at Thomson Travel Agents, Broadway, Bexleyheath.

- Possession imitation firearm October 21, at Thomson Travel Agents, Bell Corner, Upminster.

- Possession imitation firearm July 8 at Thomas Cook, Mount Pleasant Road, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

- Possession/ control identity documents with intent.

In the Bexley robbery Darling stole £67,000, £5,000 in the Upminster raid and in the Kent incident £32,000 was taken – none of which has been recovered.

DC Leisa Johnson, of the Met's Organised Crime Command, said: "This was a terrifying ordeal for all of the people involved. The firearm pointed at them appeared genuine and this was coupled with threats to shoot them from Darling.”

The new building will be used by 400 students and is located on the corner of Rotherhithe New Road and Verney Road.

The centre’s design had a lot of input from current pupils, with students involved with first floor plan layouts and furniture style, colour themes and classroom design.

Christmas time for giving

RECENTLY held a successful Bermondsey Food and Drink reception in Parliament to celebrate our local thriving food and drink sector.

It was a fantastic opportunity to show everyone at Westminster the fantastic produce of local firms like Anspach & Hobday, Maltby and Greek, Southwark Brewery and the London Liqueur Company. Many people ordered gifts for family and friends in the run up to Christmas.

It’ll be my first Christmas as a father and the festive period brings a plethora of positive local community events. It has been great to attend a whole range of local celebrations including the Surrey Docks Farm fête, the London Christian School Christmas Market at St George the Martyr in Borough, the Pullens Yards open studios on Walworth, and the huge Christmas festival at The Blue, Bermondsey. It is fantastic to see the local community celebrating together and wonderful to see everyone mixing together – even if it puts even more pressure on the busy diary!

With Christmas round the corner, it is also important to remember all those less fortunate than ourselves. Foodbank use this Christmas is rocketing with more people, even working people in Southwark, reliant on free food and help with expensive baby products for example.

Homelessness remains a major concern – with higher than ever rough sleeping expected this winter. I slept out for one night with the Robes Project to raise awareness and funding for the food and shelter they provide across Southwark and Lambeth over winter.

Their collections run till the end of January so please do help if you can.

At this time of year, it is vital that local charities working hard in our area have your support and recognition in what can be a hugely demanding time. As the News has covered, Bermondsey Care for the Elderly needs more volunteers after serving food and celebrations for local older people for 40 years now – and I’ll be there again this Christmas Day to serve meals and drinks at Guy’s Tower. SLAM consultations are as I feared

THE SAGA of SLAM (South London And Maudsley) not seeming to understand what a proper consultation is continues.

Even when Scrutiny committees admonish them, they carry on regardless!

Going back to when they closed down Marina House, excepting for methadone users, this was the main Alcohol and Drug abuse centre.

They carried out Mickey Mouse consultations.

Their first one was to leave a few leaflets on the reception desk at Marina House, saying a consultation would be held in a few days at the centre. Someone showed me this leaflet, so I attended.

This consultation was attended by three staff members of SLAM, myself, and a man and his dog. I mean this literally!

A large number of drug and alcohol abusers, are often left with a mental health problem as well.

SLAM said these persons would be seen at a centre at Blackfriars. I feared the large majority would not go all that distance from Camberwell to Blackfriars, not when Kings A&E was only 100 yards away. I was right.

This was the start of the extra pressure on Kings A&E. Having to deal with as many mental health patients as 400 a month. Official figures, not mine. Though I have a huge respect of scrutiny members, I feel they have often been far too soft on SLAM! Tom White, Southwark Pensioners Action Group

Where's the democracy in this from Coyle,where was the democracy in him being unable to accept Corbyn being elected leader of his party? Many of the same people who put him in power voted for Corbyn.

The Brexit vote went through because Joe public was / is sick of being ignored and the likes of Coyle backtracking on manifesto promises when in power.

What a shock to Coyle when things didn't go his way. And his churlish reaction was no surprise,real democracy there.

You may also get a bigger shock come the next election Bermondsey people have good memories and Simon Hughes made a big mistake and paid the price, but he has still done more since losing his seat for local people than you have, soundbites don't wash with us. Actions speak louder than words and you are conspicuous by your absence.

I’m offended Mr Coyle by EU stance

I FIND Neil Coyle's stance on the EU referendum result extremely offensive.

Please correct me if I'm wrong Mr. Coyle, but you, along with the rest of the registered UK electorate, had the chance to vote on June 23rd whether to remain in or leave the EU. Obviously you voted to remain, and you had every right to vote in the way that you did and I respect your beliefs. But in the cold light of day, more people voted to leave the EU than voted to remain in the

EU. The reason that I'm offended, is because the vote didn't go the way that you wanted it to, you now feel that you have the right to vote against the decision made by ordinary members of the public because you're a MP. So, as I see it, you are saying that 17,410,742 people are stupid, didn't know what they were voting for and you know better than all of them!

Let me ask you this Mr. Coyle: Hypothetically speaking, if a snap general election was called and the Labour Party won by a majority of just one seat. If all the other party's said "We demand another General Election because they only won by one seat". Would you say "OK let's have another election"? No, of course you wouldn't.

Face the facts Mr. Coyle. the people who voted for you to be a MP voted for you so that you may be able to help them. Not to give you a platform to voice your own opinions!

Take, for instance, the case of my daughter (who is Bermondsey born and bred). She has two small children, one of seventeen months and one of four months.

Southwark Council (in their infinite wisdom) have placed her in temporary accommodation in Croydon. There is no lift, so she has to climb four flights of stairs with the babies, she has no family or friends around her in that area and on top of all that, she has to keep commuting back to Bermondsey for the baby's regular health checks!

She constantly contacts Southwark Council, to see about them giving her a proper home back in Bermondsey, but they just keep fobbing her off and seem in no hurry to help her.

It's these kind of issues that you were elected to help with, so get off trying to overturn the referendum result and get on with your job of looking after your constituents.

Prepare in case you are unwell this Christmas

HRISTMAS IS just around the corner, so now is the time to make simple preparations to help you and your family should you become unwell over the festive season.

Before GP practices and pharmacists begin the period of limited opening hours, stock up on over-the-counter medicines to help relieve symptoms of common ailments such as colds, sore throats and indigestion.

If you have regular prescription medicine, make sure you have enough supplies to last. This is especially important for those at risk, for example people aged 65 and over, younger children and people living with long term health conditions.

If you need to see a health professional during the bank holidays, remember that an extended primary care service operates from two sites in Southwark, to provide access to a GP every day between 8am and 8pm. This can be accessed by contacting the GP out-of-hours service (SELDOC) this is not a walk-in service and you will need to make an appointment.

Or you could always try the Health Help Now app. It offers up-to-date information on local health service locations as well as opening hours, visit www.healthhelpnownhs.net for more information.

It’s likely many people will over-indulge one way or another, as we are able to relax and spend quality time with family and friends away from the usual pressures of daily life. Also, as routines are disrupted, it’s likely that our usual healthy living habits will be neglected.

While we are all enjoying ourselves, there are some little things you can do to help your holiday time go smoothly from a health point of view. Take opportunities to get fresh air and exercise when you can – a walk around the park is enough to brush off the cobwebs and make cheeks rosy!

If you are drinking alcohol, make sure you also drink water or soft drinks to reduce the hang-over. When socialising, alternate between alcoholic drink and soft drink or water to keep your fluid levels up and reduce the risk of dehydration.

And lastly, New Year resolutions are a great incentive to change your lifestyle and improve your health long term – losing weight or giving up smoking are common ones. Your GP can help with both and there’s plenty of support available if those are your goals.

Here’s to a healthy 2017 for all.

Licensed To Ill (the title of their first album) was written by two of the four man cast and you can see it has been worked on and worked up consistently to get it to the high level it is at today.

Plus three of the four trained at East 15, which is always good in my eyes.

fun and entertaining but with the story being told as fast as a rap I got lost in the LA section when there were contractual and musical problems, though not confused enough for it to spoil any of the fun.

Several audience members got pulled in to help out, which they seemed extremely happy about, and some even got to be in the music video for Fight For Your Right To Party!

Adam El Hagar, Daniel Foxsmith, Simon Maeder look and act very much like the real band, and Tope Mikun does a brilliant job of being everyone else in Licensed to Ill, a production that you do not have to like Hip Hop to enjoy, but it will help.

Jest is best at Waterloo East Theatre

THIS WAS my first visit to Waterloo East Theatre and I don’t think it will be my last, writes Katie Kelly...

Apparently, producer and musical theatre actor, Gerald Armin, discovered an unused railway arch just a couple of minutes from Waterloo, and saw its potential as a small theatre. So far it has welcomed 135 productions in its six years. If half of them have been as funny as Garry Lake’s 'Jest End' then it will have brought much joy to the London Theatre world.

This small local venue, which is funded entirely by ticket buyers and donations, and seeks to champion new talent, seemed the perfect venue for a show that cocks a highly irreverent snook at the commercialised world of musical theatre, North of the River.

The show romps through about 30 songs based on classics from popular West End musicals including Hamilton, Groundhog Day, School Of Rock, Funny Girl, Matilda, Lion King, Wicked, The Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables to name but a few! It had the audience laughing from the opening bars of “Circle is sh*te” - I’ll leave you to guess which musical is in the firing line in that number. Sorry, no prizes.

The energy is as high as the top notes which are perfectly hit. Both singing and acting were very impressive. A small cast feels like a much larger one, so good are they at assuming different characters and executing pit stop speed costume changes. So much so, that at the end I was genuinely taken aback when they took a bow and I registered properly that there were only four of

If I have any criticism it would be that the show errs slightly on the side of selfindulgence. It went beyond its stated aim of critiquing the lack of soul of the West End machine to sounding a little like a representation from equity about the challenges of being a performer.

That said, the humour outweighs this and for a fun pre-Christmas night out you could do a lot worse.

One final word, the publicity refers to fun for theatre lovers of all ages. This is definitely not true. Being unfamiliar with the show I almost took my fourteen year old daughter; which would have resulted in a very awkward evening for us both. A great night out for over 18s.

Scrooge and the Seven Dwarves

A DARK start to Baddies the Musical…literally. The villains of Grimm Brothers’ tales are out of their stories and into a mess, writes Daisy Lukas...

The drama starts with Nigel Barrett’s Big Bad ‘biker’ Wolf. Police jump out just as wolf is going to tear up Little Red Riding Hood. Wolf is arrested under the direction of the Council of Bedtime Stories (or so we think) and is sent to prison! The Clink holds a whole clan of Baddies including Rumplestiltskin and a formidable ex lawyer, Captain Hook, amongst others.

Baddies by Nancy Harris (book, lyrics and story) and Marc Tietler (music, lyrics and story) is directed by Purni Morell and is a re-visit of the original produced by the Unicorn last year. This year’s effort sees a first half which is a little saggy in the script, with a lot of filler round and round the idea of whether Baddies are actually bad all the time.

The excess script, coupled with some lacklustre guitar playing from the prison guard, means they could have easily lost 30 minutes from the production.

In the second half we meet Peter Pan and saccharine sweet Cinders. Are these two the actual Baddies behind the whole thing? Yes! Leaving aside the symbolism throughout, the general gist is these two plotting to re-brand the original villains into fluffy, positive characters without any violence or badness. The moral of the story is that we need the villains to enjoy a story …without them we’d be bored.

The kids in the audience got behind the villains with scathing remarks being thrown out loud and clear. Cinderella uses Wolf’s infatuation with her to gain power, whilst Peter Pan gets us all whipped up

with motivational speeches, and each villain gets their solo bit with lots of singing and dancing. My daughter loved the Urbanite Ugly Sisters with blinged costumes and fabulous dancing.

Some of the production might be a bit scary for the smaller ones in the audience but that is balanced by a load of sing-along catchy tunes. A bit of a long one but a great show.

WHAT A great night out I had at the 503! writes Susan Hallissey...

I’m not a Christmas person and my companion for the night, my son, is even less so! However, on a night when the ‘Christmas Spirit’ is stolen and Christmas was about to be cancelled, our festive mood was induced by the mayhem and pure energy provided by Jamie, Josh and John. (Let’s not forget Ben!) This fast paced piece had us laughing out loud from the off and the play within a play worked well. As we were taken to ‘Fairy-tale Land’ we met up with not only Scrooge and the Seven Dwarves, but also Snow White, Mary Poppins, Munchkins, Santa and Mrs Claus (definitely not to be confused with the Marks and Spencer’s TV ad Mrs Claus!), and the unexpected but hilarious - arrival of a dinosaur! I can say no more – there’s actually a cast of thousands!

Everything was thrown into the mix at this Panto and it worked a treat! I recommend that everyone I know goes along and has a rollicking good night out.

My anti-Christmas son is planning on going back – Trust me. that speaks volumes!

Energetically infectious, I imagine this trio (don’t forget Ben!) must be exhausted at the end of every performance.

A clever set and lots of quick changes also add to the festive cheer (hark at me!)

Great writing, beautifully executed – this troupe work effortlessly together, which relates into comfortable viewing for us!

Ingenious and hilarious, I can’t wait for the next Pantomime from these guys. We sung, we danced, we clapped and booed and cheered! Oh my! Maybe some of that Christmas spirit seeped into my pores!

Go and have a great time – proper good old-fashioned fun brought up to date in a Panto masterclass! These guys proved there’s an art to Pantomime. One of the best I’ve seen! Loved it!

Must See What and Why

GAVIN TURK’S retrospective, Who, What, When, Where, How & Why, at Damien Hirst’s Newport Street Gallery is a glorious exhibition of narcissism, humour and reasons to be cheerful, writes Michael Holland...

Turk places himself where we all want to be: on the cover of a magazine, cast in bronze, moulded in wax, in a portrait and with our name encircled in a Blue Plaque – The work that cost Turk his degree at The Royal College of Art. He elicits the narcissism in all of us but also makes us laugh at the foolishness of it all. Turk lets us enjoy art but with a nod a wink to not taking it too seriously.

He references – or appropriates - other artists’ work almost to the point of plagiarism but dresses it as homage; you never know if Turk is being reverential or the opposite, but I like to think he is being mischievous. He throws back at us naff stuff we had forgotten or discarded and we have to see it as art, because it is art by virtue of it being in an art gallery. And

because it is good to look at. Now. But as well as the art being extremely skilfully created there is a serious side to it.

Turk forces us to question the value of art with his binliners full of rubbish, discarded junk food cartons, and a homeless person in a sleeping bag all cast in bronze and painted, his flat tyre so realistic you have to touch it to make sure it is not rubber.

There are bronzed and painted matchboxes and apple cores scattered about the floor and looking exactly like the real thing that we kick out of our way on the street. All these in a room with his 1996 work, Pimp, a black-lacquered skip, in the middle, a glossy home for the detritus of life.

Who, What, When, Where, How & Why is art for the masses; it has something for everyone. I defy you not to like this exhibition or prod the man in the sleeping bag…

The boy who saw angels in Peckham

W

illiam Blake – what does the name bring to mind? Poet? Almost certainly. Painter? Maybe.

Psychedelic drug use coupled with naked, public reenactments of his work?

Possibly. But Peckham Rye Common? Probably not, writes Kirsty Purnell...

William, born 259 years ago on November 28 1757, was a Soho dweller as boy. As a youngster with delicate sensibilities, the central London location and built-up environment wasn’t agreeable to the young boy’s temperament. As such, as young as seven years old, he used to embark on regular walks out of the City, to the greener pastures of the South.

“He was drawn to the hills,” said Chris McCabe, Liverpudlian Poet and Literary Investigator who has researched and written extensively on William Blake, “His favourite walk was the one down to Peckham Rye and even beyond, as far as Croydon.”

William used to make his six-mile walks alone. “Kind of strange for a young boy!” said Chris.

The strangeness of William’s regular six-mile sojourns down to Peckham weren’t limited to their solitary nature, though.

When he was around eight years old, in approximately 1765, William saw something: “Sauntering along, the boy looks up

It was William’s first – of many – angelic visions, as recorded by his first biographer, Alexander Gilchrist.

“He wasn’t scared by it at all. In fact it was a very positive thing for him,” said Chris.

and time, culminating in the completion of the mural in 1993.

“A collaboration of Blake’s poetry is re-imagined in the mural,” said Georgia, also an artist and mural contributor, “A young Blake is in the central part, looking across the Rye as if he is witnessing the vision of angels.

There are lots of colours and an explosion of light – these are the angelic faces. Around it is the river of life and the tiger is at the right hand side, guarding the mural.”

Sadly, the mural became vandalised in 1996 and a block of it was actually removed – which included the tiger.

“It needed the tiger to protect the river of life,” said Georgia.

Georgia, Stan and community supporters set about raising funds to repair and renovate the mural. In 2009, Stan flew back to London from California, where he now lives, and undertook the renovations.

“Blake was a man who went with his instinct,” said Chris. He reportedly wrote in letters that venturing north of the river made him “feel sick” and he continued to make the walk through Camberwell and Peckham into Surrey all his life, well into the 1820s.

So why does Blake hold such an enduring appeal over two centuries on?

“Because he’s a very mysterious and complicated figure,” said Chris. “You just never get to the bottom of him.”

IF ANYONE remembers Kennington’s White Bear you will hardly recognise it now because it has been knocked right through and had a long

restaurant extension added on that I think ends in another borough! And quite tasteful it is too, writes Michael Holland...

If you can imagine your small, local hipster place with mismatched furniture and quirky pieces of art on the walls and scattered about on shelves, then magnify that by ten and you have the new White Bear.

We first met Ellie our waitress for the evening, and then Charlotte who gave us a rundown on the changes, and before long we had a bottle of Chateau Grand Pascaud Bordeaux in

My partner had chosen the red as she is seemingly on a mission to eat every bit of prime beef in the land and she continued that task with the Beef Wellington.

But first to the starters. Nina went for the Prawn Cocktail with Marie Rose Hollandaise, but this was an old classic with a delightful difference: the dish had been deconstructed with hot, plump, freshly cooked prawns, croutons, warm wilted lettuce and the sauce set out on a rectangular plate rather than cold and in a bowl. Quirky and good.

I had the Chicken Kiev. On its arrival I thought the breadcrumb coating a tad overcooked but once I cut through that crispy shell I found that the chicken had not dried out, and the garlic butter had a real punch to it. Nice.

Next up for me was the Pan-fried Sea Bass with Celeriac, Smoked

Bacon, Chicory and Shallots. The fish was delicious, and the vegetables, cooked until soft, all melded into one intriguing taste.

The bacon bits, though, I found a little too brittle. Even so, putting all these flavours together was a stroke of genius.

Across the table Nina the Wolverina was confronted with two large pieces of red meat in puff pastry that she was about to tear into with her hands until I begged her to use the cutlery provided. The beef must have been very good because she only allowed me the tiniest of tastes, which I found excellent and wanted more, but that plea fell on deaf ears.

However, she was not impressed with the pastry: ‘Not enough puff,’ she said, ‘and it’s gone all soggy’.

She surmised that the blood in her rare beef had seeped into the pastry and not allowed it time to cook. ‘I should’ve asked for medium,’ she added, while washing another mouthful down with a rather large glug of the Bordeaux.

The people in the open kitchen were getting a little busier now as more customers came in but were coping efficiently and quietly.

The time had come for dessert but having dined so well on the first two courses we chose to share a

Chocolate and Orange Brioche Pudding with Vanilla Ice Cream. It was a twist on the well known standard, Bread & Butter Pudding, which worked very well.

Getting our breath back after such a feast, Nina finished off with a Latté while I finished off the wine.

This old alehouse has reworked the pub grub favourites to provide enough choice for everyone to be happy with, so all in all a splendid evening at this newly refurbished White Bear.

AN 80TH minute Dumebi Dumaka equaliser secured a point for Dulwich Hamlet last weekend, as they drew 11 with Folkestone Invicta.

Three minutes from the end of the first half, Kenny Beaney gave away a penalty, which Joe Taylor duly dispatched past Hamlet ‘keeper Preston Edwards, but Dumaka popped up with a goal ten minutes from time to ensure a share of the

spoils.

Gavin Rose made just one change from the midweek draw with Metropolitan Police, drafting in Michael Chambers for Quade Taylor.

Despite Hamlet’s early dominance, they could not edge themselves in front and subsequently fell behind shortly before the break.

The pressure, however, continued into the second half, as the visitors looked for a way back into the game.

Chances from Dumaka, Ibra Sekajja, Vas Karagiannis and Ashley Carew went

begging, but Dumaka became the hero with time ticking away, heading in Nyren Clunis’ pinpoint cross.

Meanwhile on Tuesday night, Hamlet stretched their unbeaten run to eight games after a 3-1 win over Staines Town at Champion Hill.

“Team spirit is something we are really big on and if we’re going get out of this, we all need to stick together - that includes the board and the fans also.

“The support the fans gave us vocally was fantastic. Around 300 people were there and our fans were heard all through the game. I felt that the least we could do at the end is go over and thank the supporters because they will have a massive part to play in this dog fight.

“This is a great club and I’m so pleased to be involved; today has been a very proud day for myself to lead Fisher.”

DOCKLANDS UNDER-12’s secured an emphatic victory last weekend, beating Welling United 50.

Still unbeaten in the league, goals from Bjorn Thomas (2), Frankie Lane (2) and Ollie Sheppard downed the Wings, taking the trio’s total so far this season to 44.

With half the season still to go, all three will look towards a treble figure finish.

LYNN AC Boxing Club had two boxers in the Alliance Youth national semi-finals last weekend.

Eyram Avadzi – at 67kg - won a unanimous points decision against Max Rayner from Rose Hill ABC. Unbeaten before the bout, Rayner was defeated by Avadzi’s quick hand speed and good footwork – a trait drummed into him by his trainers.

Jacob Koutouan (71kg), meanwhile, won by stoppage against Erin Ali from New Addington ABC. Koutouan dominated from the first bell, catching his opponent with big shots, leading to a knockdown in the second round. The third round continued with the same pattern, Ali's corner pulling the boxer out of the bout at its conclusion.

Almost 100 people travelled to the K2 Arena in Crawley to support postman Jimmy, 38, a former Fisher amateur, and though he just fell short he said he had enjoyed “a good old tear-up” in the ring.

“I feel like I’ve been run over after Saturday’s fight, but I know I couldn’t have given any more and I’m proud of myself,” he said.

Harry Smith fires home his second goal last Sunday

Lions manager keen to play down the hype after striker ’s treble

NEIL Harris was probably preaching straight from the manager’s manual when he suggested Harry Smith had just played his “worst game” for Millwall in Sunday’s 5-2 win over Braintree in the FA Cup second round.

It wasn’t a very subtle attempt to play down expectations around the striker, who left The Den with the match ball under his arm after his first hat-trick in just his sixth game in professional football.

When it was put to Smith later he raised his eyebrows as a broad smile plastered across his face and he said: “I’ll take playing like that every week and scoring three goals.”

It wasn’t just his first professional hattrick but his first in senior football. It was something he hadn’t managed for Sittingbourne or Folkestone Invicta but he now has six goals in six games for Millwall, scoring on his debut in the EFL Trophy, League One and the FA Cup. The furthest the 21-year-old centreforward had ever progressed before was the second qualifying round with Sittingbourne last season.

He admitted afterwards that just twelve months ago he was on the verge of

giving up pursuing making a living from football to instead concentrate on building a career as a welder. But things changed when he joined Folkestone Invicta and offers to go on trial with clubs in the Football League convinced him he needed to give up the day job if he was to have any chance of succeeding.

Smith comes across as level-headed and he would probably admit that Braintree did as much to hand him the match ball during 90 minutes before referee Darren Deadman gave it to him after the final whistle.

As much as Smith again caught the eye, it was the return of Lee Gregory that probably pleased Harris more than anything else on Sunday afternoon. For all of Smith’s obvious talent and potential, it’s hard to look past Gregory and Steve Morison being the most crucial contributors if Millwall are to climb out of League One. Sunday’s game, characterised by terrible defending and players from both sides lining up to take shots at goal, was a fun distraction from Millwall’s number one priority this season.

Gregory set up Millwall’s equaliser from the kick-off after Braintree had taken a shock lead in the sixteenth minute. Sid Nelson, playing for the first time since October 4, was beaten too easily by Michael Cheek who then beat Jordan Archer with a rising drive.

Braintree barely had time to consider if they would become the latest side to shock Football League opponents before Gregory nudged Zak Jules causing him to miss a clearing header, and Smith side-footed past Sam Beasant 54 seconds after his side had fallen behind.

Millwall quickly added goals two and three when Smith fired home a halfvolley from close range after the ball had flicked off Calum Butcher and Byron Webster from Shane Ferguson’s corner, before Ferguson finished low past Beasant after Gregory had set him up.

One journalist in the press room afterwards suggested to Braintree boss Hakan Hayrettin that his side’s bright orange, Hi Vis jerseys probably made it more difficult for them to move more stealthily into goal-scoring positions without appearing on their opponents’ radar.

That theory didn’t stand up against what had gone before. Certainly, Webster must have been aware of the close presence of Jack Midson behind him after Cheek had beaten Nelson to head on towards his striker partner. But Webster hesitated and Midson sprinted away to clip the ball past Archer at his near post.

Nelson was taken off after 65 minutes, with Harris saying afterwards that had always been the plan. In a game with quite a lot riding on it given the potential

of a lucrative tie in the third round it didn’t seem to make sense that Harris would be using it to ease players back to fitness after injury. More likely, similar to taking the focus off Smith, Harris wanted to do the same with his young centre-back. Nelson endured a difficult afternoon and the impression again created was perhaps he could do with a spell out on loan where he could play every week, something he hasn’t yet done in his senior career almost two years on from his senior Lions debut.

Braintree still had chances after Tony Craig came on and Cheek, Simeon Akinola and Monty Patterson all should have added to Millwall’s discomfort.

Smith completed his hat-trick three minutes after half-time when the ball broke to him off Ian Gayle and he quickly adjusted his feet to prod home from six yards.

Smith went off to a standing ovation in the 78th minute, and Gregory was given a rest with five minutes left. In added time David Worrall looked like he had botched Millwall’s chance to get a fifth when he failed to square the ball to Aiden O’Brien. But the Lions regained possession and Fred Onyedinama did what Worrall didn’t and O’Brien had the easiest of his nine goals this season.

But all the talk was of Smith, and now Harris must hope the his young striker has the temperament to handle the attention.

MILLWALL BOSS Neil Harris was pleased the club were paired with Premier League opposition in the third round of the FA Cup.

The Lions will play Bournemouth at The Den on Saturday, January 6 and Harris said it will be a “great test” against Eddie Howe’s side, who are currently in tenth place in the Premier League after their dramatic 4-3 win over Liverpool last weekend.

Millwall and Bournemouth have met 78 times, with the Lions having won 38 games to the Cherries’ 29.

Championship in December 2014 when Bournemouth won 2-0 at The Den after goals from Yann Kermorgant and Harry Arter.

“It’s a good one,” Harris said. “I wanted a home game so I’m delighted we got that, and I’m delighted we got Premier League opposition.

“It’s a great test for us, for our young group. It’s a good opportunity for both clubs, we’ll look at it and see it as an opportunity to try to cause an upset against a team that see themselves as a top-ten Premier League club at the moment.

“Bournemouth will see it as a difficult game against an underdog, but an opportunity for them to progress because they’ll be looking at the FA Cup this year and think

they can get to the last eight or last four.

“I played against Eddie at various times. He was a good player before injury cut his career short. I really enjoy listening to him, the way he talks about the game.

“Him and (assistant manager) Jason (Tindall) have really proved themselves now at that level they’re at. It’s a great opportunity for us to test ourselves against a top side and top management.”

There were just 3,345 people at The Den for Millwall’s 5-2 second-round win over Braintree last Sunday.

Harris explained he understands the commitment fans make, but wants them to come out in force for the third-round clash.

“I talk about six home games out of seven this month, and now seven out of nine, and what goes under the radar is that it’s a lot to expect from the fans.

“But that never gets forgotten by me and my staff and my group of players. A lot of us have come from a non-league background and working-class families. And there are a lot of Millwall fans in the squad, so we appreciate what the fans do to support us.

“But we will be looking for a big crowd on that day and I’m sure Bournemouth will bring a good support and it will be a great atmosphere.”

Millwall cast net wider in search for young talent

MILLWALL’S HEAD of academy recruitment Barry Dunn says the club’s “net has got wider” as they continue to search for the best young players.

Dunn worked for Fulham where he was responsible for signing Chris Smalling – who was with Millwall as a youngster.

And he explained the club are expanding their network of scouts as they aim to keep the supply line running to Neil Harris’ first team.

“The only one who hasn’t come in under the academy umbrella is Harry Smith,” Dunn said. “Everyone else has come through the academy recruitment side.

“We’re gradually spreading ourselves

further and further afield. Obviously we want to get people from south London because we’re a south London club. But we’re bringing players in from Kent, we’ve got scouts in Essex and we’re bringing in boys from north London.

“Our net has got wider over the last few years since I came onboard.

“We’ve got about eighteen or 20 scouts with eight or nine of them doing most of the work. The others will go out occasionally.

“If players are U16, for example, we bring them in and give them a threeweek trial. If they’re up to it they stay a full six weeks and at the end of that we make a decision: sign or release.”

Dunn personally scouted Ben Thompson, and he revealed the club had to move to sign the midfielder after Premier League Aston Villa began to show interest.

“Ben Thompson was me,” Dunn said.

“Ben was playing for Dartford and he had been on my radar for quite a while.

But there was always something I wasn’t sure about and then because I left it so long there were other clubs looking at him so we had to move.

“We got him in and he got his scholarship and he’ll tell you himself he found it difficult, but now I think he’s one of the first names on the team sheet. He’s a great lad, a Millwall fan and he lives in the area. So he ticked all the boxes in terms of what we look for.

“One of the major clubs that were looking to take him on were Aston Villa.”

Dunn also spotted Alfie Pavey – “Alfie was prolific and when I brought him in I thought we didn’t have anything like that, he was just an old-fashioned centreforward” – and he outlined the pressure he is under to unearth young players who are talented enough to win

professional deals with Millwall.

“It’s getting tougher, a lot of clubs are looking at players younger and younger where we’re based,” Dunn said. “We’ve got development centres near us, with Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea, all trying to get kids in. Without doubt it is difficult.

“For the last few years when we play a game on a Sunday, even though we know it’s not about winning, my job is I must produce players that can win professional contracts because if they don’t get professional contracts I’m not the man the club are looking for, they’ll be looking to replace me and it’s as simple as that really.”

There are fourteen players in Millwall’s squad who were initially brought in to join the academy who have gone on to make their first-team debuts.

by Harris, and Dunn explained the Lions boss’ philosophy is crucial to the club’s

success.

He said: “I knew Neil when he was a player because this is my eighth year at Millwall. I didn’t know him well but when he came back to us (after retiring as a player) he was doing the 21s and it did help that he knew all about the youth system.

“The fact that he wanted to go down the youth route has benefitted us greatly.

He saw what was below with the 21s.

“It’s a great route for us to go. Take someone like Fred (Onyedinma) who has come through the system. People sometimes forget he only turned 20 recently and he’s played nearly a hundred league games.

“A lot of the fans like to see players come through the system. Maybe I’m old-fashioned but they really care.

Someone like Ben, for instance, is a fan and wants to be at the club, he doesn’t want to be anywhere else.”

BEN THOMPSON is sitting under the tactics board in one of the portable cabins at Millwall’s training ground. A muted monitor shows Judge Judy sternly delivering decisions. Later in the week Neil Harris will show video clips of Shrewsbury to his players ahead of the League One clash on Saturday.

Rows of chairs are set up facing the top of the room, making it look like a classroom. It’s probably apt given the number of young players who have featured this week in cup games against Braintree Town and Wycombe Wanderers.

Millwall don’t overly focus on the opposition, but there are still little details that Harris and his management team will have picked out with video analyst Dan McLoone and important information to be passed on to the players to give them an edge over their opponents.

“It’s normally the day before the game, we come in here and look at videos of the opposition and the tactics they use,” Thompson explains.

“The staff pick up on every little detail, things you wouldn’t even think of. What a player is like, his movement, if he’s left-footed or rightfooted. You have to go into detail because every little percentage helps.

“You obviously look at the players you’re directly up against, what kind of player they are. If they’re slow or quick then you’ll know little things you can do throughout the game that will help you out. For instance, if he’s a little bit slow then you know you can beat him if he’s coming towards you.

“Every little detail is important. If you get the ball around the box and you know a player isn’t going to get out to you quickly, then you’re confident you’ll have time to shoot.

Everyone listens and everyone takes it in. At the end of the day it’s for the players’ benefit.”

It was exactly the scenario he describes that Thompson found himself in the corresponding fixture last season when Millwall trailed Shrewsbury in the second half of a game they were expected to win without too much trouble. When the ball broke to Thompson outside the box he took a touch on his chest and volleyed the ball beyond goalkeeper Mark Halstead to relieve the tension in the stadium and put his side on course for an ultimately comfortable 3-1 win.

Thompson has found himself rested recently, an inevitable consequence of his high-energy approach to every game. Last season he had featured in just thirteen games by the end of November and hadn’t started all of them. By November 22 in this campaign he had played 22 times.

Footballers are known to resist approaching their manager if they are injured or need a break, but Thompson says that’s not an issue with Harris.

“The gaffer gave me a couple of games to rest and maybe it was needed,” he explains. “I’d played

almost every game and I’m raring to go now.

“You can be honest with the manager we have, he’s very good at managing the players. I don’t think I really need to tell him, he knows if I need a rest.

But if ever felt like I needed a rest I could go up and tell him. At the end of the day you want what’s best for the team, you don’t want someone tired on the pitch because that affects the game.

“Sitting on the bench can be frustrating, you want to get out there.

But it’s part and parcel of the game, everyone gets rested or dropped or whatever you want to call it. When you come back you’ve just got to make sure you’re better than the last time.”

One of the things Thompson wants to improve on is contributing more goals, though he doesn’t lose sight of the

main reasons he’s in the team: providing that energy and improving an already impressive engine.

“I want to get up the pitch as much as I can,” he says. “But the main focus is on covering everyone else and doing the dirty work.

“When you first start in the team you’re not used to the tempo, everything is sharper, players are more intelligent. So you’ve got to run at the right times because at the end of the game people tire and then you’ve still got the energy.

“That’s what helps me, I come alive more towards the end of games. Firstteam fitness is a massive thing, the more you play the more it’s going to improve.

“Towards the end of last season I was getting a bit tired. It was my first full season in the senior team so I was

getting used to the tempo of the game.

My fitness is improving all the time and my football is coming along nicely.”

That rest he got recently could be important with so many games coming up in such a short period. Progression in the FA Cup added another fixture to the schedule, pushing the home league clash with Walsall to a later date.

Given Millwall played Bournemouth relatively recently in the Championship, the draw wasn’t quite the one he wanted. But he is excited by the competition and the challenge facing the side in the next four weeks.

He said: “Bournemouth is a big draw, maybe not exactly what we had hoped for. We can go out and do a job against them, it’s definitely a winnable game.

“I don’t watch too much football but I saw their win over Liverpool last

weekend. They’re a good side and it’ll be a tough test. At our place we can turn it into a battle and see what happens.

“The FA Cup is great with lower teams playing higher teams.

“It’s an exciting time, all the games are coming thick and fast. Cup games are important but we have to focus on the league.

“We’ll be in training on Christmas Day but that’s what you’ve got to sacrifice as a footballer. You don’t get the luxury of spending a lot of time with your family at Christmas but there will be some time to rest and see them.

“I won’t be eating too much or drinking, but I wouldn’t swap it for anything and I think a lot of my friends would love to be out there playing football, doing something they love.”

STEVE MORISON and Shaun Hutchinson are unlikely to return from injury in time to face Shrewsbury Town at The Den this weekend.

Both players are back in training but Neil Harris doesn’t want to risk any player unnecessarily with such a busy period ahead in which the Lions boss will have to manage his squad through seven games in 28 days.

Harris made a number of changes to the side that defeated Braintree in the FA Cup last Sunday for the second round of the EFL Trophy against Wycombe on Wednesday night, and he will recall a host of first-team players for the clash with bottom-of-the-table Shrewsbury.

Millwall didn’t climb into the top six until January last season, but if results go their way they could be in the play-off places after this weekend.

Harry Smith will probably continue up front with Lee Gregory in the absence of Morison. There is competition in midfield, with Ben Thompson and Aiden O’Brien, who were both rested for the league game against Bury and the FA Cup win over Braintree, vying for a place in the side.

David Worrall and Fred Onyedinma are options to start on the right side of midfield, while Calum Butcher is gradually getting used to Harris’ 4-4-2 system. There is less competition for places in the centre of defence with Hutchinson still out and that is an area of concern with just three clean sheets in nineteen games in League One this season.

LEIGHT SHOW INSPIRES LIONS

NOEL LEIGHTON scored two goals as Millwall’s U23 side defeated Crewe Alexandra 3-0on Monday afternoon.

Leighton's brace, along with a penalty from Kyren Mundle-Smith, made it just one defeat in their last nine games for Justin Skinner’s side.

The result was all the more impressive given Skinner was unable to call upon a number of senior players with the senior side’s involvement in the FA Cup and EFL Trophy competitions this week.

The result moved Millwall up to third place in the Professional Development League (South) table, a point behind Cardiff and eight off Charlton.

MILLWALL ARE keeping it in the family – after Gary Alexander’s son George was offered a scholarship deal at the club this week.

Alexander senior played 104 games for Millwall and scored 25 goals, including two in Millwall’s 3-2 defeat to Scunthorpe in the League One playoff final in 2009.

He is currently the manager of Greenwich Borough in the Isthmian League Division One South.

Alexander tweeted this week: “Good start to my evening as I’ve just found out my son George has been offered a scholar at @MillwallFC #prouddad so happy.”

“We have to be every bit as good as we have been over the last couple of months. We have to make sure that we defend as a unit and that we are an attacking threat.

“Every game at this level, as we’ve seen this season, is a closely fought contest.”

Harris’ first game in his first full season as Millwall boss was against Shrewsbury on the opening day of last season when Morison and Gregory scored in a 2-1 win at New Meadow.

Millwall fell a goal behind in the return fixture at The Den before goals from Thompson, Morison and Gregory earned three points to strengthen their play-off hand.

Midfielder’s deal ends next summer

NEIL HARRIS is hopeful Shaun Williams will sign a new contract with the club.

Williams’ current deal expires at the end of this season and the club will hold talks with the midfielder to try to thrash out new terms.

Williams, 30, is one of a number of players out of contract that the

club want to keep. They are in talks with Fred Onyedinma, while club captain Tony Craig’s contract also ends next summer.

Jordan Archer, Mahlon Romeo, Byron Webster, Lee Gregory and Steve Morison have all signed new deals already this season.

Williams has featured 23 times in this campaign and scored four goals, and Harris believes his importance to the side has been indicated just as much when he hasn’t played this season.

“All my players enjoy it here,”

Harris said. “I get on very well with all my players and I’d hope the players enjoy playing for me.

“I certainly know the players enjoy playing for this club and I’m really proud to be able to say that, because some had difficult times before I took over. But they’ve really come on leaps and bounds.

“There is a lot that you have to consider when it comes to contract negotiations, simple things like finances, location.

HARRY SMITH has “a long way to go” on and off the pitch, his boss Neil Harris has warned.

Smith scored the first hat-trick of his professional career as the Lions defeated Braintree 5-2 in the second round of the FA Cup last weekend.

Harris understandably wanted to downplay that achievement given the whirlwind start Smith has

enjoyed in his first few months with a Football League club.

Harris was the same age as Smith when he joined Millwall from nonleague Cambridge City in 1998, and he was named player of the year in his first full season with the club.

Smith has scored on his debuts in the EFL Trophy, League One and the FA Cup, but Harris wasn’t heaping the praise on him after his treble helped see off Braintree and set up a third-round tie with Premier League AFC Bournemouth in January. “Harry has done really

well,” Harris said. “On the pitch he’s proved everything that we hoped he would. He’s exceeded everybody’s expectations with the goals he’s scored.

“But he’s still got a long way to go on the pitch and certainly off the pitch. He’s still learning what it means to be a professional. It’s his football that does the talking for me.

“Yes, well done on a hat-trick, but you have to be a top professional and you have to get better every week.”
