Torrent of sewage pours through ceiling and walls of flats after bottle gets stuck in pipe

RESIDENTS OF a Rotherhithe estate have told how their flats were flooded by a torrent of sewage, with filthy water leaking through a ceiling, light-switches and walls, after a soft-drink bottle got lodged in a pipe.

One resident filled fourteen buckets worth of the foul waste in just one hour, with another reportedly resorting to hurling it out of his window, after it started pouring over the rim of a toilet.

It was also claimed that one resident “had to use an umbrella when she went for a wee” due to the leaks.

Government needs to step in to help commuters

T

HE GOVERNMENT, or what is left of it, needs to take urgent action to allow commuters of the Southern Railway and Thameslink services to get on with their working lives.

After weeks of delays and cancellations, some passengers are now complaining that their actual jobs are on the line as they struggle to get into work. Labelled by many as the worst rail company in Britain, it has made the unprecedented decision to introduce an emergency timetable, allowing it to cancel another 350 trains a day.

As a war of words rages on between the rail company and unions over high levels of staff sickness and strikes, in a row over the role of conductors, passengers are left high and dry.

Despite imposing fines amounting to £2 million, the situation seems only to worsen. Maybe the only way to stop this in the long-term and to show other rail companies that they cannot mismanage their services to this level is for the Government to do what was done on the East Coast and allow Directly Operated Railways to run the routes under public control and in the interest of the general travelling public.

Gomer’s death highlighted community spirit

D

ESPITE FAILING to find the family of the much-loved Meurig Gomer Wyn-Roberts, his funeral this week was a shining example of how well a community can come together.

Better known as Gomer, this man mountain was respected by the people of Bermondsey for rolling his sleeves up and joining in local events like Christmas fairs and fundraisers for charities like Help for Heroes.

Regularly dressing up as Santa for the kids in the Blue Market Square, Gomer did his little bit to be part of a community spirit many claim is disappearing. His friends were determined that his untimely passing would not go unnoticed and fought hard to find family members.

The Old Bank pub paid into and spearheaded a fundraising appeal to give him a fitting funeral. For weeks the police and the coroners’ court did little to communicate what was happening to his body and how much effort was being put in to find his family. After Albins funeral directors stepped in, friends of Gomer were able to take charge and they did him proud.

If and when his family are found they will have the comfort in knowing that even though he died alone above a pub in Peckham, he was loved by those who knew and obviously admired him.

Man starts search for driver incarcerated in German camp after he finds family photos

FAMILY PHOTOS sent to a Peckham soldier incarcerated in a Nazi prisoner of war camp have been discovered, with the hope of reuniting them with the late soldier’s relatives.

Stefan Black, from Sydenham, was rummaging through a second-hand shop while on holiday in Poland, when he saw a bundle of black and white photos with messages on the back addressed from Peckham.

It appeared to Stefan that the photos had been sent by the doting wife and children of Charles H.

Ward, of 14 Bird in Bush Road, who served as a driver (Private).

They had sent the photos to Charles, with the help of the Red Cross, while he was imprisoned in Stalag VIII-B, in Lamsdorf, Germany.

Stefan, 77, said: “I was on holiday in Krakow when I came across the photos in this memorabilia shop, and I bought them for the equivalent of 25p. I was curious because they were addressed from Bird in Bush Road in Peckham.”

Stefan said he felt “touched” by the photos, which show Mr Ward’s young daughter Jennifer growing up, and of his new-born baby,

Other photos show his brother James Ward posing with Charles, and another photo shows his wife and two children at the front garden of their home in Bird in Bush Road.

“I wonder if there might be anyone in Peckham with the surname [Ward], or who might know what happened to the family who lived at their address? His children could certainly still be around,” Stefan said.

“I happen to know one person whose grandfather had the surname Ward, and lived in Peckham, but it would be great to see who might come forward.

“I was rather touched by it because she was sending him photos. The Red Cross were the ones who organised for the prisoners of war to have post sent to them.

“But somehow they ended up in that shop where I found them,” Stefan said.

From exploring the public Forces War Records, you can find that Charles, whose service number was 219863, was stationed in Crete before he was captured and sent to Stalag VIII-B. Stefan, who works as an architect, said he also learnt that the camp was overrun by Soviet Russian forces in May 1945.

He said most of the British prisoners of war would have fled as the Soviets advanced, perhaps in such a hurry that Charles would have left the photos behind.

However, the military records show that he was formally reported missing on October 13, 1941.

There is also an unconfirmed note that Ward could have received a Star medal, which was awarded to all soldiers “if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service”.

A TRIAL of mini-zebra crossings to go on cycle routes that go behind bus shelters and onto pavements has been announced, after a protest against one being built outside St Thomas’ Hospital was held on June 28.

Last week, a protest was held outside the hospital in opposition to plans for a ‘floating bus stop’ being built because of worries surrounding the high concentration of disabled people.

In a question to London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Liberal Democrat Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon asked whether he was “satisfied” with the level of consultation Transport for London (TfL) were undertaking with pensioner and disabled groups.

In his response, the mayor said a group consisting of disabled charities and cyclist campaign groups had come up with a trial of mini-zebra crossings on Whitechapel High Street, Stratford High Street and Blackfriars Road.

News of the trial was met with scepticism at the hospital, however, as one blind resident told the News that the stops “denied blind people access to bus stops”.

Kate Portal said: “On the islands itself you are isolated. You don’t know what number is coming, you don’t know if the one you want is stopping behind the other one either.

“I feel that it should have been covered under the Disability Discrimination Act as it does not allow some people access. I would have thought it would not be allowed.

“They’re coming to realise that a lot of people are very worried. I didn’t realise how extreme these islands would be when they came out.”

Sir Hugh Taylor, Chairman of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, questioned whether the mini-zebra crossings would help with the proposed stop outside St Thomas’ in particular, but remained open to dialogue with TfL. He said: “We remain sceptical about whether mini zebra crossings would help with the particular one we are concerned

with, because our concern relates to the volume of buses and the proportion of vulnerable users.

“We are worried about people being forced onto the cycle paths and whether various buggies will be able to move properly. We are open to dialogue with TfL and we are expecting to have further discussions with them and other parties.

We want to listen to what they have to say as well.”

Leon Daniels, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: "We understand the concerns of local stakeholders about aspects of the design of this segregated cycle route.

“We're confident that our continued engagement with those stakeholders, including St Thomas’ Hospital, will result in a final design that meets everyone's needs."

Councillors on the authority’s Planning Committee approved the scheme on Tuesday, which will open up 8,731 square metres of space in ten levels of the six-storey car park.

Carl Turner, whose architectural firm were behind the plans and collaborated with other grass roots community groups, said he was “Extremely excited to be bringing an innovative project to Peckham”.

“With planning committee it’s always nerve racking, but this looks to become a big success that can build on the strength of the Peckham Plex, the Bussey Building and Frank’s Café,” Carl said.

“We’re going to build it in phases, with levels one and two hopefully completed by October. It has had already had a massive amount of interest with artists and professionals wanting to enquire about booking studios. We’re looking to optimise our

profits, not maximise them. We’re offering very cheap workspace time for ordinary local folk and in return we ask that they commit to one hour a week and give a little bit back.”

According to the plans, the basement and ground floor of the Levels project will become a main entrance for tenants and visitors, while retaining 31 public parking spaces.

In the basement, and up to floor two, there will be a focus on artist, with studios, workshops, dark rooms and rehearsal spaces. Three to four will focus on start-ups and digital media and include co-working spaces, editing suites, photography studios and meeting rooms.

On floors five and six, (levels seven to ten) Frank’s Café will remain on the roof with capacity for over 1,000 people. A children’s play area, events space, dance studios and terraces will fill the rest of floors five and six.

Many of the studios on each floor will be free to use until 1am, seven days per week, while workshop spaces for ceramics, photography, printing, laser cutting, and dark rooms will open from 8am to 9pm daily.

The change-of-use permission was awarded by the council on a five-year temporary basis.

SOUTHWARK: Applications have opened for all Southwark residents to get free access to six council leisure centres as part of its new ‘Free Swim and Gym’ programme.

Those who sign up will be able to use the leisure centres on Fridays (subject to timetabling) and before 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays, from July 29.

The six Southwark Council leisure centres included in the scheme, now managed by Everyone Active, are: The Castle Centre, Camberwell Leisure Centre, Dulwich Leisure Centre, Peckham Pulse, Seven Islands Leisure Centre, and the gym at Surrey Docks Watersports Centre.

Over-60s will also be able to participate in silver sessions for free and disabled residents will have free access for seven days a week. For more information, and to apply, visit the council’s website or visit your local library or leisure centre for a paper application form.

1135 people have applied for the scheme so far.

Mayor splashes cash for lido

PECKHAM: A crowdfunding project to get a new state-of-theart lido has received an extra splash of funding from the mayor of London.

The £7,500 boost from the mayor, Sadiq Khan, has now put the lido campaign within a whisker of a twothirds milestone before reaching its £64,797 total.

The bid to reopen the outdoor pool was launched in May, with the hope of reviving a lido that existed at the north-end of Peckam Rye Park between 1923 and 1987, before it was mounded over.

Chris Romer-Lee director of Studio Octopi, the company behind the lido project, said: “It’s going at a steady pace and we’re on course to do it.

“It looks like we’re also going to beat all the Spacehive crowdfunding records. We raised the most money in 48 hours.

“The amount of pledges we have had is now at 881m which is fast approaching the record held by the Peckham Coal Line project.”

The new designs from Studio Octopi are for the pool to be 180 foot long, with space for a café and community area. The pool would also be heated and chlorine free.

A ‘Splash Mob’ community picnic event will also be held at the proposed lido site on Sunday at 12pm, with around 100 expected to attend.“It’s a low key picnic which we hope will give us another little boost,” Chris said.

“People are invited to bring all sorts of swimming paraphernalia and we we’ll hopefully have a slipand-slide and rounders. We will also have a massive group photo with everyone acting as though they are swimming, to show what it could all look like if we had the pool.”

Pals lay ‘gentle giant’ to rest after trying to trace family

CLOSE FRIENDS finally put a much-loved Bermondsey “gentle giant” to rest on Monday, two months after his death sparked a campaign to raise money fior his funeral.

Meurig Gomer Wyn-Roberts, 53, known as Gomer, was cremated at Honor Oak on July 4 after a service was organised and attended by more than 30 of his friends.

The send-off came following months of uncertainty about what would happen to his body, after he was found dead above the Greyhound pub, Peckham in May, because no one could find his next of kin.

Gomer’s body was released to friends at the end of June and after one last appeal to find members of his family, a funeral was arranged by publicans across the borough.

Pam Grogan, a close friend who would often have Christmas dinner with Gomer, paid tribute in the service.

She said: “Gomer reminded me of a schoolboy with dirty knees, shorts and hat. Gomer was always smiling and had such a big heart.

“He came down for a funeral once and was wearing a suit that was five sizes too small and was wearing white trainers. He was the kindest and most caring man. Goodnight and god bless sunshine.”

Music played at the service included the Welsh national anthem to recognise Gomer’s country of birth, YMCA by The Village People and Bring Me Sunshine by Morecambe and Wise.

Canon Owen Beament said in the service: “Gomer gave a part of

himself to all of us and we should all say thank you for giving it to us.

Death is not just an end, it is also a new beginning.”

On Saturday July 2 friends of Gomer went on a charity walk to the London Eye from the Old Bank pub to help raise money for the funeral.

FIREFIGHTERS HELD a parade through Borough and a special service at Southwark Cathedral on July 5 to mark the London Fire Brigade’s 150th anniversary.

The parade set off at 2pm from Winchester House, Southwark Bridge Road and ended up at the cathedral at 2:30pm for a service to commemorate the Brigade’s relationship with the cathedral.

A colour party of four serving firefighters carried the Brigade’s iconic Watling Street bell – which used to hang in the former Watling Street fire station - along the parade route.

They were joined by the Brigade’s Ceremonial team who carried the current London Fire Brigade Standard.

London Fire Commissioner Ron Dobson said: “London Fire Brigade has had a long and close relationship with both Southwark Cathedral and the borough of Southwark so it’s very fitting that we mark our 150th year with this service at the cathedral.

Owner pleads guilty after Staffie mauls Chihuahua

A DOG owner whose Staffordshire Bull Terrier mauled a boy’s pet Chihuahua to death has pleaded guilty in court.

The Brigade’s relationship with Southwark and its cathedral goes back many years, with fire crews attending a number of historic blazes in the borough since the Brigade’s formation in 1866. These have included the 1890 fire at WA Rose & Co’s oil mills in Bankside, one of the largest petroleum fires of the 19th century and the 1920 blaze at The Hop and Malt Exchange.

Southwark was one of the most heavily bombed areas of London during World War Two but its cathedral, like St. Pauls, emerged relatively unscathed, only suffering external shrapnel damage.

This was largely a result of the local Auxiliary Fire Service, and later the National Fire Service firefighters who protected the cathedral and the surrounding area together with Air Raid Precautions Wardens and fire watchers.

The savage attack happened on March 21, when a boy aged ten was walking his ten-month-old Chihuahua down Red Cross Way in Borough.

The Staffie was loose in its garden in Windmill Walk while its owner went to the shop. It then escaped after the owner’s child left the front gate open. It was then that the Staffie escaped and crossed paths with the little Chihuahua.

During a hearing on Friday at Camberwell Magistrates’ Court, it was said that a neighbour saw the gruesome attack and ran outside with her husband armed with a stick.

They bravely tried to shoo the Staffie away as the young boy stood screaming with his Chihuahua’s lead still in his hand.

Prosecutor Edward Aydin said: “This occurred at 8.20am in the morning and it was a scene of horror, carnage and bloodshed.”

The owner of the Chihuahua, who

cannot be named for legal reasons, spoke to the News after the attack.

She said the tiny one-and-a-half kilogram pup was “like a part of their family”.

“We keep having flashbacks. Just thinking about it now makes me upset,” they said.

Elizabeth Campbell, who spoke for the defendant, requested an adjournment for expert reports to be prepared in relation to his temperament.

“It was not an expected attack and not one which there was warning for,” said Ms Campbell.

“It is extremely unfortunate. There is no doubt that the other child who was in control of the dog would have been affected.”

Chair of the bench Malcolm Giordano agreed that there was so far insufficient evidence to make a sentence.

“We are adjourning for a report to be prepared and for experts to bring the case back to court with more evidence,” Mr Giordano said.

The defendant, who also cannot be named by court order, was bailed to attend Croydon Magistrates' Court to be sentenced on August 12, for offences relating to two breaches of the 1991 Dangerous Dogs Act.

Craig is making a donation from his testimonial at The Den against Brentford on July 30 to the Centre, which treats injured members of the British Armed Forces.

Millwall have a connection to Headley Court since a home game with Brentford in November 2014 when the players wore a special one-off camouflage kit to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the First World War. Craig spoke to a number of soldiers at the Centre on a tour through the hydrotherapy and neurological units and the gym. He was also shown around the prosthetic workshop, where a prosthetic leg can cost up to £45,000.

“It was a humbling experience and a day I'll remember for the rest of my life,” Craig said. “It opened up my eyes.

“I learnt an awful lot and I'm so proud and pleased they want to be a part of my big day. Walking around, you're sometimes speechless – the people here are smiling, happy and get on with things. There's a lot of people who moan out there and you come here (and realise) we've got nothing to moan

about. It was an eye-opener and I enjoyed being there.

“The most striking experience was speaking to the servicemen and hearing some of their stories. To see how they made the prosthetic legs and arms, and the cost is unbelievable. I'm so pleased I can donate to a good cause.”

Craig’s grandfather, Doug Craig, served in the British Army, but the current Millwall captain never thought of following in his footsteps. Instead, he chose football, and he has now been rewarded by the club for ten years of service.

“When I was younger, all I wanted to do was be a footballer,” Craig explained.

“When I was fifteen or sixteen it didn't look as if I would be one. I won't lie, I did do a carpentry course. To have the career I've had so far, I feel very honoured and very lucky. I've sacrificed a lot and there are a lot of people I've got to thank who I will be thanking.

“It was a no brainer (to donate to Headley Court). It is a charity close to me and close to everyone. It's great to have a cause like that.”

“It now adds insult to injury to discover that two and a half years after the closure of Southwark fire station, in addition to a reduction in response times, so much public money has been spent simply maintaining and protecting an empty property.

“In 2013 I firmly rejected Boris Johnson’s argument that the closure of Southwark fire station could be justified due to the savings it would create.

“Sadly it seems that even the promised savings have not been as significant as he promised due to the high costs of maintaining and securing an empty building over two and half years.”

Plans for the old fire station include turning it into a new 900-student secondary school with a multi-use games area by developers Hadston.

There was a recent consultation on the plans at the end of May with 174 people attending.

London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “The cost of security is a one off payment and will be more than offset once the station has been sold.

“Once closed, it was important to make sure the buildings were safe and secure in order to achieve resale and avoid squatting and other public nuisances.”

MAINTAINING THE old Southwark fire station, on Southwark Bridge Road, despite it being closed has run up costs of £163,686 in the financial year of 2015/2016, it has been revealed.

In a question to the London Mayor Sadiq Khan, Liberal Democrat London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon asked what the security and other costs was of the ten fire stations that shut in 2014.

The Mayor replied that of the ten that closed, seven had been sold off and of the three remaining, Clerkenwell, Westminster and Southwark, Southwark had incurred the sum through maintenance, security and utilities.

The closure of Southwark fire station proved controversial under the term of former London Mayor Boris Johnson, with him arguing that it would provide vital savings.

Pidgeon told the News that the cost of maintaining the station even though it is not being used was an “insult to injury”.

She said: “Back in 2013 a huge number of people in Southwark came together to fight against the closure of Southwark fire station knowing that it

A ROTHERHITHE resident filled “fourteen buckets” of sewage in just one hour on July 4 as it poured out of the drains and leaked through the ceiling and walls in her flat.

Four flats of Regina Point on the Canada Estate were filled with sewage due to a soft-drink bottle clogging up an important pipe, forcing faeces, urine and dirty toilet roll to be pushed out.

Horrified residents called Southwark Council’s emergency call centre late at night as the flooding begun, but were told to “put a bucket underneath it” and that they “couldn’t do anything at night due to health and safety”.

Candice Copley, one of those affected, told the News how she became increasingly frustrated with the call centre as she tried to stop more damage being done.

She said: “My main issue was with Southwark Council’s call centre. All they kept saying was “you’re just repeating yourself” and “put a bucket” underneath the leak.

“One of the people I spoke to went home before it was resolved. I work in customer relations and that’s appalling.

“They told me they could send an assessor afterwards to fill out a form to see what they could help us with.

“At one point they said “we can’t do anything during the night because of health and safety”, but what about our health and safety?

FIRE ENGINES were rushed to the Aylesbury Estate on Monday to tackle a car fire that sent huge plumes of smoke over Walworth.

Police and fire officers are carrying out a joint investigation into a suspected arson attack on the car, which was parked on the first floor of the Wendover block car park A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade has said they were first called at 3.55pm and responded with four fire engines.

Thurlow Street and Beaconsfield Road were also closed temporarily, and the fire was under control by 4.20pm.

The location of the leisure centre was a key topic during the recent Surrey Docks ward by-election, and was part of the victorious Liberal Democrat candidate Dan Whitehead’s campaign.

Councillor Whitehead said: “It’s good that all our pressure has forced to the council to finally listen to the community and say that it wants to ‘reset’ its relationship with residents. It is a shame that it has taken almost a year to get to this point though.

“There are other possible sites that should be looked at and I am glad that residents and Liberal Democrat councillors have pushed the Council to slow down and look at all the options properly. I will continue to fight residents’ corner.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has agreed to “go back to British Land” to ask them to “look at all of the potential sites” of the new Canada Water Leisure Centre, after months of pressure from local councillors and residents.

News of the council’s decision was welcomed by the Canada Water West Residents’ Action Group, a collection of residents opposed to the preferred location on the western side of Surrey Quays Shopping Centre car park.

Southwark Council said it expected half of the borough’s schools to be affected by the National Union of Teacher’s (NUT) strike, who claim 2,000 members in Southwark.

The News has learnt that Bacon’s College in Rotherhithe and Charter School in Dulwich were among several that asked entire year groups to stay at home.

The joint secretary of Southwark’s NUT branch, Michael Davern, told the News: “The NUT is aware strike action can be disruptive to parents and carers and for that we wholeheartedly apologise. Equally, teachers do not take strike action lightly. The problems facing education are too great to be ignored and we know many parents share our concerns.”

Teachers from across the country also joined a 15,000-strong march through central London, which started at 11am in Portland Place and finished in Parliament Square.

A letter written by the NUT’s general

secretary, Kevin Courtney, to the secretary of state for education, Nicky Morgan, also set out their case for industrial action.

Mr Courtney cited the Institute of Fiscal Studies forecast that schools could lose eight per cent of funding in real terms in the coming years, and referenced increasing class sizes, fewer subject choices, and staff cuts.

Mr Courtney’s letter said: “The main cause of this is increasing pressure on school budget due to the per-pupil funding freeze, exacerbated by the higher national insurance and pensions costs imposed by your government which are adding an extra five per cent to the cost of employing teachers.

“We make one last appeal to you to avoid this action: Fund school sufficiently… Tell academies they must at least have regard to the national terms and conditions…

Promise meaningful talks to look for a full resolution of the dispute.”

In a letter responding to Mr Courtney, Nicky Morgan accused the NUT of “playing politics with children’s futures”.

Ms Morgan said: “We are investing more than any previous government in our schools. This year the schools budget will total £40bn, an increase of £4bn since 2011-12.”

Southern and Thameslink commuters face cut in trains

COMMUTERS ON the borough’s Southern Railway and Thameslink services face reduced services next week, after it announced 350 services will be axed.

A raft of emergency weekday timetables will take effect on Monday with services throughout the south east into London cut short.

There will be a fourteen per cent reduction in AM services to London Bridge, with PM services reduced by sixteen per cent. Services to Victoria will also be reduced by five per cent throughout the day.

Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), who own and manage both the Thameslink and Southern franchises, has said the emergency brake is down to “unprecedented” levels of crew sickness with other staff unwilling to work overtime.

Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood – areas where many commuters will be affected – yesterday said Govia Thameslink Railway’s performance was “simply not good enough”.

“Every week I am contacted by residents frustrated at the terrible rail services in my constituency,” Ms Hayes said.

“Too many passengers are made late for work, left stranded, forced to travel in unbearably crowded conditions or find themselves unable to board trains during peak times because they are full.

“I met the Rail Minister, Claire Perry MP, and the Chief Executive of GTR,

Charles Horton, to discuss the unacceptable levels of service that my constituents are experiencing. I was absolutely clear with them that the current situation is unbearable and is causing untold misery for my constituents on a daily basis.”

As well as sick leave, the staff shortages have also been blamed on Govia’s ongoing battle with the Rail, Maritime and Transport trade union (RMT) who have taken industrial action against the firm’s plan to start using driver-only operated trains. However the RMT denies allegations that increases in staff sickness have been planned to coincide with their industrial action.

Southern’s Passenger Services Director, Alex Foulds, said: “We are introducing this temporary weekday timetable with reluctance, but it is the best thing we can do for our passengers who have been suffering daily cancellations ever since this dispute with the RMT began, and for which we are sincerely sorry.

“It should give the majority of our passengers a better, more consistent service that they can plan around.

“Whilst our first priority is our passengers, we also understand that this has been a difficult time for our staff.

Conductors already know that their jobs are guaranteed, that there will be no reduction in salary and that the independent rail safety body has confirmed our plans are safe.

“Now, after listening to our staff, we have also decided to restore leisure travel benefits. All of this, we believe, should help our staff feel able to return to work and so reduce the issues causing the current high level of train cancellations.”

The services affecting Southwark residents

There will be no service between London Bridge and Beckenham Junction.

GTR are asking customers to use alternative Southern, Tramlink, London Overground and Southeastern services to complete their journeys.

Southern tickets will be accepted on buses between West Norwood and Tulse Hill and between Crystal Palace, Birkbeck and Beckenham Junction.

There will be reduced services between: • London Bridge and Tulse Hill, affecting customers wishing to alight at South Bermondsey, Queen’s Road Peckham, Peckham Rye, East Dulwich and North Dulwich stations.

• Direct trains between London Bridge and East Croydon • Trains between West Norwood and Birkbeck, Norwood Junction and East Croydon, also affecting Gipsey Hill and Crystal Palace

AN ASYLUM seeker charity based in Peckham and Elephant and Castle is appealing for backers to help keep it afloat, after losing nearly £40,000 of funding.

The Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers assists some 600 clients with 40 volunteers, and says it “helps with the relief of poverty and distress” and promotes health and education for asylum seekers and refugees.

The charity’s coordinator, Pauline Nandoo, said: “We’re still in a critical situation and we’re fundraising like crazy. We are finding fewer agencies who can work with us and we may have to lose staff.

“We have about 80 families with young children and we are very conscious that many of them don’t have anything and are in desperate need.

“Our strategy is to raise funds that might not be huge amounts but will see us through while we look for long-term investment.

“We lost £30,000 from Southwark Council after they cut spending on youth services earlier in the year, which was the largest chunk of funding we were getting. Then we lost £8,000 from the Community Choice Programme.”

One of the volunteers, nineteen-yearold Jonas Wesfendorf, said: “The majority of the asylum seekers we help come from Iran, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria and we saw an increase in demand last year with what’s happening in the Middle East.

A BLOCK of flats on the Abbeyfield Estate has had a yellow makeover after builders Keepmoat finished off works with a bright-yellow render on the balconies.

The seven-storey Bradley House received different shades of yellow to mirror the rising of the sun each morning.

Sandie Warren, a Bradley House resident, said: “I think the block is so much nicer now – the yellow colour is beautiful. The brickwork was crumbling away before, it’s more pleasant now.

“I like the yellow colours and love how they get lighter and lighter at each floor.

We were all unsure about the new colours at first but seeing it all finished now, I think it’s beautiful.”

Tilly’s thanks after fundraising walk

THE SUN came out for Tilly’s Walk for Life on Sunday July 3 as hundreds showed support and raised money for the Bermondsey girl with cancer.

Tilly Browne told the News that she would like to thank everyone who came out.

She said: “I would like to say a big thank you to everyone and their sponsors for their kindness and generosity, and to everyone who

donated the wonderful gifts for the auction and raffle prizes. Your love and support has given me such hope and inspiration.

“A special mention to Sue Slater, my mum's friend who understands what we are going through and organised my charity walk. She has been amazing, and my family appreciate all her hard work.

“My brilliant medical team at Guy's hospital, including Dr Anne Rigg who has operated on me, my mum and three sisters in the last few years. As one of us came home another went in, due to

the BRCA2 gene (Breast Cancer). It has taken its toll on the family.

“I also have the very rare Li Fraumeni Syndrome gene, and I would like to thank Suzan Crawley for her help in introducing me to Pan Pantziarka, at the first LFS conference in the UK, where my mum, sister Jemma and I met scientists, clinicians and researchers who have a special interest in this rare form of cancer and support families, as there is not enough information out there.

“Hopefully, they will find a cure which will be an annual event. Their

website is: The George Pantziarka TP53 trust and we collected for them during the walk.

“I would also like to mention Gary Valentine-Fuller of the MumMum Foundation, who supports local families who have loved ones suffering from cancer. He is a kind, wonderful man and arranged for a friend and I to go the 'Summertime Ball' at Wembley to see Jess Glynne, Tinie Tempah, Zara Larsson, Ariana Grande and Flo Rida, it was an amazing day.

“Gary has also arranged four premium tickets for the Tamla Motown musical

and a meal and I am taking my mum, Sue Slater and Suzan Crawley.

“I am enormously grateful to the Southwark News for highlighting my condition and I hope it has raised awareness about the BRCA2 (and BRCA1) gene and Li Fraumeni Syndrome (LFS).

“Also to Mick Hannon for our after party venue, St Peter's Catholic Club.

Thank you to my family and everyone involved, it was a great day.”

A ROTHERHITHE nursery has received an ‘Outstanding’ report from Ofsted as it enters its 25th year.

Playshack Nursery on Rotherhithe Street was hailed for its “inspirational manager” and “excellent”

partnership with parents.

The report said: “This inspirational manager and her deputy work tirelessly to drive forward improvement.

“Extremely well-established relationships with a multitude of other agencies help them work towards reaching the highest possible outcomes for children.

“Partnerships with parents are excellent. The staff involve parents in their children’s learning.

“For example, parents regularly accompany their children on wellplanned outings to places such as the swimming pool and library.”

The nursery of fifteen children celebrates their different backgrounds and constantly seeks

strong links with the local community.

Jackie Defalco, Playshack’s manager, said: “Most of our children come from the surrounding area and some come from quite far to come here. We’re very engaged with the local community and are supported by them.

“We’d like to thank St Mary’s

Church, Rotherhithe, the Amicable Society, Albins and the Friends of Southwark Park. We often go on field trips and take the children swimming. We’re always out at museums and go down by the river.

All the parents come into help at some point as they’re all good at something. We had one parent come in a read a story in Russian!”

Pearly Queen’s award for helping homeless heroes ROTHERHITHE

THE PEARLY Queen of Rotherhithe won a We Are the City Rising Stars award on June 30 for her work with the charity Homes for Heroes.

Michelle Thorpe received the award at a ceremony in Canary Wharf in recognition of her charity work for homeless former members of the British armed forces.

Together with the Pearly King of

Bermondsey and Camberwell, Jimmy Jukes MBE, Michelle has worked tirelessly to provide ex-service personnel with support.

Homes for Heroes goes out onto the streets to offer food, clothing and help to get them back into work if possible.

After receiving the award, Michelle said: “It went really, really well. We were there for about two hours and it was a lovely night. The entertainment was great and we saw the military choir.

“There were 21 independent judges and nominations from 110 countries.

It’s great to have a bit more recognition for the charity.”

Michelle has remained committed to raising money for charity and as part of her role as a pearly queen she has abseiled, bungee jumped and skydived. MORE THAN 10,000 people enjoyed the Bermondsey Carnival on Saturday, July 2, at Southwark Park as music, drink and laughter saw revellers refuse to let the rain dampen their spirits.

Carnival goers enjoyed music from 1980s music icon Paul Young, face-painting, food stalls, rides and a petting zoo.

The music, organised by Bermondsey Beat, attracted people from all corners of London and showcased the best Southwark has to offer.

Councillor Johnson Situ, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Business, Employment and Culture said: “Over 10,000 people attended our annual Bermondsey Carnival and I want to thank everyone involved for keeping this big community festival going year after year.

“Continuing to run these free events for residents is an increasing challenge, but it is fantastic to see so many people getting behind them and making them a success.”

Family pays tribute to young dad who lost his battle with cancer

JACK WELLS’ family have paid tribute to a loving father and dedicated friend, saying he “kept his sense of humour and kept trying to laugh” right up until he passed away from terminal cancer.

Jack, 23, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone disease, at the beginning of 2015 and spent the rest of his life raising money to make memories with his three-year-old daughter, Scarlett.

He died before he was able to fulfil every wish, however, on June 27 at 6:45am under the care of St Christopher’s Hospice, Sydenham, where he was sedated for comfort and watched over by his mum, Veronica.

“I was up right through the night watching him. He was thinking of others all of the time,” she said.

“He just wanted it to be me and him.

He wanted to be sedated and he was in a comfortable sleep. He was breathing then stopping, then breathing again.

“The hospice did everything for him.”

Born on July 1, Jack was an unashamed “mummy’s boy” and remained committed to his family and his friends, none more so than his daughter.

Veronica said: “On the day that he was given hours to live, all he wanted was to see Scarlett. Even with all the drugs he managed to sit up and hug her.

“He kissed and cuddled Scarlett. When he was well he used to jump her and scare her to make her laugh.”

“He loved his daughter. She will come here now and probably say “where’s daddy? Where’s daddy? And he’s not going to be here,” added George, Jack’s stepdad.

George met Jack when he was fiveyears-old and proudly watched him grow up.

“He was five when I first met him. I just didn’t think this would happen. He grew up and got on with everything, getting a job with the council. He loved football and computer games,” he said.

“I didn’t want to accept it when he was diagnosed but Veronica told me he would die eventually. I just remember seeing Jack get up and have a bath, have a drink and get on with it though so I thought the day would never come.

“But once months started passing I saw little changes. Then I thought his mum

“We bonded over the phone & had regular conversations as well as inviting him out places with me, the world has really lost a positive soul. With everything that he was going through, he still managed to check in with how I was doing & how my mums cancer was, he was a fun cheery character & I will never forget him for that.”

Jack was full of energy from a young age which sometimes saw him end up in trouble, such as breaking his ankles numerous times playing football.

His sense of adventure would often see a young Jack tell his family how he would grow up to be anything from a sports star to a policeman.

Veronica said: “You name it he wanted to be it when he was little. Policeman, fireman or footballer. The last one didn’t work out because he was always in a cast."

Jack grew up with his younger sister Becky, who admired his ability to carry on no matter the weather and his cheeky sense of humour.

Becky said: “We used to muck about a lot around our mum. He used to poke me to get me annoyed and mum would tell us to shut up.

"He was a nice hearted boy with loads of friends. If you didn’t know he had

cancer you would not think he did by the way he was.

"He just got on with it."

As Jack's cancer turned terminal in May this year, his focus remained on trying to enjoy life to the best of his ability and create memories with Scarlett.

His uncle, Ian Wells, spoilt Jack with attention since he was born, taking him on holidays to Disneyland and Spain, and in Jack’s final days went one step further and organised a last trip to Amsterdam.

“When Jack spoke to Ian last, Ian told him “I’ve always seen you as my son, and I will always treat you as my son,” said George.

Through the kindness of strangers, family and close-friends, Jack was also able to enjoy the chance to drive a Mercedes, but he was unfortunately too ill to go on a hot air balloon ride or go on a VIP safari trip with Scarlett.

His friendliness was infectious wherever he went though and he always managed "to put a smile on doctors and nurses in hospital".

The money that was raised will now be split in half, with one share going to St Christopher's Hospice and the rest going toward Scarlett's future.

Jack will be cremated on Friday July 15 at Honor Oak Crematorium, with a wake at the Stanley Arms afterwards.

The family have asked that instead of flowers, donations would be welcome for St Christopher's Hospice and Scarlett's fund. To donate, please contact Gary Valentine-Fuller on 01689 798 448.

‘We’ll still take Scarlett on safari’

THE MUMMUM Foundation, who helped arrange for a VIP trip to Woburn Safari Park for Jack and his family, have said they will still take Scarlett.

Gary Valentine-Fuller, who founded the charity and gave it his nan’s nickname, said: “I was deeply saddened to hear of Jack’s passing.

We spoke a couple of weeks ago on the phone; he wanted to thank me for thinking of him and his little girl.

“I was so truly humbled and with a lump in my throat I replied, ‘I would

want someone to think of me if I was poorly’ and assured him that The MumMum Foundation would do everything in our power to help him achieve his last wishes with his little girl; We hoped that the safari we were planning was going to be the first of many bucket-listers and it broke our hearts that he sadly lost his brave fight to cancer before we could even get him there.

“Jack’s family have asked me to conduct his funeral, which I consider a great honour.

“It was heart breaking to witness his family celebrate his 24th Birthday in our family funeral home on Friday, but they said that Jack wouldn’t of wanted it any other way. His family are the most beautiful and strongest people you could ever meet.

Bermondsey has lost one of its last remaining treasures. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this very sad time.

“May he sleep in perfect peace.

ADULTS AND children rolled up to Peter Hills School’s fundraising circus last week, on its new football pitch.

The event saw people pack in to a tent for two showings from Popup circus.

Katie Boyle, Friends of Peter Hill treasurer, said: “It’s great for the children because it’s a big fundraising event. We sold out for both shows and it’s also about putting the school back on the map.” The school used the event to help pay back the money used on the pitch, raising around £2000 in the process.

The event’s sponsor, Metro Village, is hosting a summer ball on July 15 on the roof gardens at Ontario Point, with proceeds going to the school. Tickets cost £20 and are available on 02071124972.

Apply for Peabody pounds COMMUNITY GROUPS and charities in Southwark have sixteen days to apply for a share of £100,000 from the Londonwide Peabody Community Fund.

The Peabody Trust housing association is offering grants of up to £5,000 with a deadline of July 22.

Local projects that have benefited in the past include the Mint Street Music Festival and the Bermondsey Community Kitchen, which trains young people to get qualifications

and jobs in the catering industry.

Applicants will be drawn into a shortlist, and contacted for an informal chat to find out more about their project and will be presented to a Peabody Community Fund panel.

Learning to fight cancer

PEOPLE LIVING with learning disabilities in Southwark are being helped to get early diagnosis and treatment of cancer thanks to Guy's and St Thomas' learning disability community health team.

people with learning disabilities need better support to spot the signs and symptoms of cancer early and to overcome their potential fears of health professionals.

To combat the problem, nurses from Guy’s and St Thomas’ learning disability community health team encourage people with learning

disabilities to get regular health checks with their GP and to attend hospital and GP appointments.

The team of community nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists provides services to an estimated 6,000 people living with learning

disabilities in Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham.

Learning disabilities can affect the way people learn new or complex skills and how they communicate. A learning disability can be mild, moderate or severe.

Sylvia Barnes, 75, was diagnosed with cervical cancer last year and received treatment at Guy's and St Thomas'. The learning disability community health team attended important hospital appointments with her and informed the hospital cancer teams of her disability and concerns. With their support, she was able to overcome her fear of hospitals and get the treatment she needed.

Jackie Downing, Deputy Head of Nursing for Health Inclusion at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: "There are many reasons why people with learning disabilities are less likely to get a cancer diagnosis than the general population.

"It could be because they don't tell their parent or carer about the symptoms they've been having because of fear of going to the doctor. Or it could be that health professionals are missing the warning signs or making assumptions about whether people with learning disabilities can tolerate diagnostic tests like a cervical smear test or treatments like chemotherapy.

“But there are many things that we can do to encourage people with learning disabilities to get the care they need. It's about improving understanding and taking away the fear associated with cancer.”

Patients rate their hospital care Recent research suggests that

88% OF patients rate the quality of care they receive at Guy’s and St Thomas’ as 7 out of 10 or higher, according to the Care Quality Commission’s national inpatient survey which was carried out in July 2015.

The results, published last month, show that Guy’s and St Thomas’ overall patient satisfaction rating is 1% higher than when the survey was last carried out in 2014.

Cancer Centre at Guy’s - drop-in session

THE NEW Cancer Centre at Guy’s Hospital will be open to patients in September. Throughout the three years of the building’s construction, drop-in sessions for public and staff have been held. The final drop-in session will take place inside the Cancer Centre on Tuesday 26 July from 57pm.

Speakers will include Dr Maj Kazmi (Clinical Director of Cancer Services), Alastair Gourlay (Cancer Centre Project Director) and Diana Crawshaw who leads the Patient Reference Group which has played a key role in shaping the new Cancer Centre at Guy’s.

There will also be stalls showcasing: • The building and installation of medical equipment • New technology to be used within the centre • Information about the art installations • Clinical services for patients • Fundraising.

Please come along if you would like an opportunity to view the ‘Villages’ within the new centre and to see a display of some of the artefacts unearthed during the construction of the building from the Museum of London Archaeology.

Annual Public Meeting - save the date

THIS YEAR’S Guy’s and St Thomas’ Annual Public Meeting will be held at 6pm on Thursday 15 September in Shepherd Hall at St Thomas’ Hospital.

Refreshments and an exhibition of information stalls will be available in Central Hall at St Thomas’ from 5.30pm.

This is a chance to hear about the last year in the life of Guy’s and St Thomas’, and to learn more about our future plans. There will also be an open question and answer session with the Trust Board.

Everyone is welcome and there is no need to book a place in advance as this is a public meeting, open to all.

IKE MANY I was sadden by the recent Brexit referendum results and I am proud to have voted for the UK to remain.

I benefited from the Erasmus EU Student Exchange programme and had the opportunity to study at Utrecht University for six months during the final year of my undergraduate degree studies. My student exchange programme was the first time I experienced living and studying abroad. As an European, I made a number of new friends during my six months, many of whom I am still in touch with today. As a member of the EU, I was not required to pay extra tuition fees at my host university and I was able to apply for a grant to help cover my accommodation costs in Utrecht.

Without this vital EU grant, this opportunity would not have been possible. I now fear that programmes like this will be denied to millions of young students not only across Lambeth and Southwark, but right across the UK. I have been a longtime advocate for encouraging young people to get involved in the democratic process and a keen supporter of reducing the voter age to 16 and it was good to see so many under 25yr olds casting their votes for the first time. Unfortunately, for the majority of them, this was not the result they wanted.

I am worried about the increase in racist attacks after the referendum results. There has been a steep increase in intimidation, violence and calls for people to ‘go home’ directed at non-white people and European nationals. It is important that we all work together to defend and champion the diversity across our city, especially in boroughs like Southwark. At the recent London Assembly Police and Crime Committee meeting, of which I am a member, it was reassuring to hear the Deputy Police Commissioner and the new Deputy Mayor for Police & Crime highlight that the police will be on alert with extra vigilance on race hate crime, and will take action on any incidents and attacks. It is important for residents to ensure that any incidents they witness or become aware of, are reported to the police.

The full implications of our exit from the EU will become clearer over the weeks and months ahead. The Mayor and London Assembly will be pushing for London to remain in the single market, which will undoubtable benefit Southwark businesses.

The electorate is always right

IN HER column (30 June) Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich & West Norwood, calls for a second Referendum.

She cites that Leave won with just a small majoirty. So a majority of 1.2 million is small is it?

In politics a majority of one is sufficient. Ms Hayes goes on to claim the Leave campaign told lies. So the Remain campaign were completely honest were they? They ran a negative campaign. All doom and gloom.

The Remain campaign had the goverment machinery behind it. I do not believe for one moment that No10 did not coordinate world leaders and other overseas politicians coming out in favour of the UK staying in the EU. Leave had to fight against all the odds and still triumphed.

Ms Hayes is a London based MP but London is not England. Not by a long chalk.

I recently went to France to watch England play in Euro 2016 and asked Northerners I met what the feeling was up there. To a man they told me everyone they knew wanted out because of genuine concerns about immigration, a taboo subject for the Labour Party. To these Northerners It was not the main issue. It was the only issue.

They said they kept being reminded by the politicians that immigration is beneficial to the country but for the life of them, they could see absolutely no benefits where they lived.

Has Ms Hayes ever spoken to people from the back streets of places like Barnsley or Huddersfield? If she had, she would have got a different picture.

It is ironic that Leave won due, in no small part, to Labour voters ignoring the party line because they do not feel the Party represents them any more.

Indeed, when it came to the Referendum they had more in common with the voters in the Shires.

Hadley can afford affordable homes

YOUR REVELATION last week that Hadley group is trying to escape its obligation to build 35 per cent affordable housing on grounds of 'viability' needs to be challenged.

It claims it meets its section 106 'planning gain' duty by building a new stadium on Metropolitan Open Land (MOL). Hadley says this may cost £5 million.

If you divide the purchase price by 155, the number of units proposed, it arrives at £38,000 per unit. London developers normally expect building land to cost about a third of the eventual selling price.

Working on an average selling price of £500,000 per unit, that would suggest a ‘normal’ land cost of £166,667 per unit, giving a difference of £128,667 per unit. Multiply that by 155 and you obtain a notional gross profit on the land alone of £19.4 million. That’s all before building begins.

So Hadley could well bear the cost of affordable homes. The development is more than viable. And so is the football club with a four-fold rise in average attendance of more than 1,300, rising to more than 2,500 for some games, plus proportional profits from beer sales.

But by far the club's greatest asset are its loyal fans and hardworking volunteers who last year worked an estimated 2,500 hours for the club.

Sight test for those with learning disabilities IN A report launched in parliament we at SeeAbility say NHS England’s national sight testing and funding system is letting down the one million people with learning disabilities in England.

Us and leading eye health organisation the Local Optical Committee Support Unit (LOCSU) are calling for an urgent overhaul of the system as there are huge levels of sight problems amongst people with learning

disabilities and people are currently missing out on the eye care they need.

Some are even tragically losing their sight.

SeeAbility’s report, ‘Delivering an equal right to sight’, finds numbers in England are at their highest level yet: • one in ten of the learning disability population will be blind or partially sighted • six in ten people with learning disabilities will need glasses • studies indicate four in ten of the 100,000 children in special schools have never had a sight test and up to half of adults with learning disabilities have not had their eyes tested in the recommended period • Children with learning disabilities are 28 times more likely to have a serious sight problem than other children People with learning disabilities, their families and supporters are being asked to sign a petition calling on NHS England to deliver a more inclusive system and offer free sight tests for all working age people with learning disabilities.

Sight tests not only help people get the glasses they need, they can identify serious sight threatening conditions like cataracts and glaucoma. There is currently no NHS plan for eye care and little mention of the high risk of sight problems or the need for checks in new national learning disability strategies.

The current NHS contract for sight tests fails to recognise that people are likely to need additional time or appointments to complete a sight test, as well as better support with glasses.

Those of working age may not be eligible for NHS funded sight tests, unlike other high risk groups which are, such as those with a family history of glaucoma.

SeeAbility also says there needs to be awareness training in health and social care on the risks and signs of a sight problem in people with learning disabilities. Eye care services need to provide accessible information and reasonable adjustments, and the report features projects across the country supporting people with learning disabilities that others can learn from, including SeeAbility’s work to deliver sight tests and glasses to children in special schools.

Living well with diabetes VER 14,000 adults have diabetes in Southwark – that's around 6% of the population.

Around ten per cent of these are for Type 1 Diabetes (also known as juvenile onset or insulin-dependent diabetes), meaning that the vast majority of diagnoses are for Type 2 Diabetes – a condition normally associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity or lack of exercise.

Diabetes has been grabbing the headlines for some time, due to the huge increase in the number of people diagnosed with the condition in recent years. As a result, we often read conflicting stories about diabetes, what causes it and what it's like to live with the condition.

It's important that people have access to the right information about diabetes, such as the signs and symptoms of the condition, what you can do to lower your risk, and also the help and support available locally to help you get on with life.

Symptoms of diabetes includes feeing very thirsty urinating more frequently than usual, particularly at night, feeling very tired, weight loss and loss of muscle bulk, cuts or wounds that heal slowly and blurred vision.

Southwark residents will be some of the first in the country to be offered places on the Healthier you: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme South London. This is the world's first evidence based behavioural programme to help them avoid developing Type 2 diabetes. People suitable for the programme, will be identified via their NHS Health Check or their GP practice.

Referrals will begin this summer and those who join the programme will get tailored, personalised help, including education on healthy eating and lifestyle, help to lose weight and bespoke physical exercise programmes, all of which together have been proven to reduce the risk of developing the condition.

Descending into deepest darkness

T

his week of high political drama and the unexpected fall of the country’s leader seems an appropriate backdrop for the opening of Macbeth, writes Katie Kelly...

The fear and rage that we have seen enacted on our public stage all find themselves echoed in this play about the taking and losing of power, and its potential to corrupt and destroy.

The arresting music that opens the performance both heralds and sustains the strong supernatural thread interwoven into the story.

When going to see a production of ‘The Scottish Play’ at the Globe, I imagine an audience is hoping both for an original interpretation and great performances of iconic roles. The first hint of originality comes with the appearance of the ‘Wyrd sisters’ and a brilliant use of puppetry in their portrayal. This ‘disembodiment’ is wonderfully macabre and suitably chilling.

Other strokes of creative genius include the scene in which Banquo's ghost appears to Macbeth and also the amount of humour in the production. King Duncan is played for laughs until he meets his unfunny end. His murder is followed very quickly by a superbly comic turn by Nadia Albina as the porter.

convincing Lady Macbeth, from the first scene where she is provocative, powerful and terrifying as she ‘unsexes’ herself and commits all she has to a bloodthirsty quest for power, through her descent into a more vulnerable looking madness.

Ray Fearon seemed to warm up in the role of Macbeth as the play went on - I was unconvinced at the interval but more impressed by curtain call.

Scarlett Brookes deserves a mention for her heartbreaking Lady Macduff. This is a small role that has the potential for huge impact and, for me, her murder was the most sinister and heartbreaking scene of the night.

The Globe also played its unique part in the play - the benefits and drawbacks of an open air space were all in force. Many might have bemoaned an evening standing in the unseasonal rain, or been distracted by the occasional incongruous noise of overhead aircraft, but this was surely outweighed by the power of night falling and light fading as Macbeth descended into deepest darkness and death.

20th Century Southwark caught on camera

THE TIMES and The Sunday Times newspapers have put together and opened an exhibition at Southwark Cathedral, which showcases pictures of the borough from the 20th Century, writes Alex Yeates...

The “Times Past” exhibition will feature pictures from all over the Southwark area, and opened to the public on Saturday July 2 to run to Wednesday September 7.

It is free to view the pictures and is open to the public from 9am to 6pm.

Robert Hands, TNL Executive Managing Editor, said: “The Archive team have put together an evocative collection of photographs that showcase life in Southwark going back to the early 20th century and it’s fascinating to see how the area has evolved.

“This has been a great partnership with the cathedral team.”

Strange brew, look what’s inside of you LONDON HAS brewed beer since time immemorial, with its presence a constant liquid rung upon which the capital’s citizens have climbed through history.

From Falstaff’s buffoonery in Shakespeare to Southwark’s historic Anchor Brewery, London has thrived from the cultivation of hops and malt, writes Callum Burroughs...

Southwark has been home to many excellent breweries, but lately it has staked a real claim to being the hotbed of London’s craft beer scene, with the now infamous Bermondsey Beer Mile.

London Brewery Tours have been operating Saturday tours since 2014 and aim to highlight some of the new beers and ales which have revitalised the commercial area of Druid Street market.

The first stop on our tour was Southwark Brewery, situated on Druid Street alongside a number of other exciting local businesses nestled under the railway arches.

Founded in 2014 the SE1 brewery has gone from strength to strength offering a variety of traditional ales, including its Bermondsey Best, to more experimental hoppy alternatives such as the citrus fuelled Cascade.

The brewery’s location might seem odd but there is logic to the railway arches as they provide cool temperatures and decent storage space, allowing them to produce around 2700 pints per brew.

The challenges of producing exciting new beers on such a regular basis is one relished by the team at Southwark Brewery, with brewer Kieran Leeks citing a real community feel for brewers under the arches.

He said: “It’s a really friendly environment. We can talk about beer all the time and everyone gets on well. It’s about doing something that we’re passionate about which is key.“ Our willingness to stay is quickly curtailed as our guides agitate for us to move on to our next stop.

Just a few hundred metres away past some artisanal bakeries and food stalls sits Ansbach and Hobday with a sprawl of people standing outside in the street chattering intently.

We pick up a Framboise IPA expecting sweet, fruity tastes but instead find a funky sourness that hits our unprepared pallets hard.

We then sample the brewery’s new White Session IPA a new concoction made possible by recently purchased equipment.

The variety of options matches Southwark Brewery but the overspill of beer lovers into the road suggests at a more expectant crowd.

“We have a focus on quality,“ I’m told by founder and proprietor Jack Hobday, one half of the branded started in 2012. “I think it’s the fact that the better beer we produce the more of a crowd we can attract.“ Other thriving businesses here fill

the air with tempting smells and noises but as ever we are made to move on with our next beer stop looming in the distance.

Our approach to Fourpure brewery makes it clear that the ‘beer mile’ is in fact a misnomer.

It’s easy to see why distance is so arbitrary as we trek through Bermondsey’s streets buoyed by beer and expectant of what we are told is the biggest brewery on our tour.

Hidden away in an industrial estate near South Bermondsey station, Fourpure is indeed the biggest we’ve seen so far today with its hangar sized space full of mash vats and boilers.

Some of their beer, most of which comes in cans, is actually aged in oak barrels which formerly housed Bordeaux reds supposedly enhancing their flavour and strength.

Founded in 2013 by brothers Tom and Dan Lowe, Fourpure is a nod to beer’s four main ingredients - though their stylised cans show their inspirations come from all over the world.

The room is abuzz with keen customers and despite previously expanding they are unable to meet demand, even at full capacity, which might lead to yet another move and perhaps greater prominence.

British weather intervenes and we leave for our final destination, the decidedly cool Partizan Brewery.

We attempt to cram inside out of the rain but struggle as yet another of

Bermondsey’s breweries seems packed once again, this time under arches on Almond Road.

Yet again there’s an astonishing range on offer with lemon and thyme, another (potentially more delicious) raspberry effort and a punchy IPA which at 6.5% reminded you of its presence.

Our stay was short-lived as the bar was closing but founder Andy Smith also stressed the two key factors in the emergence of Bermondsey’s craft beer scene, cost and community.

He said: “It has since turned out that it’s been incredibly nice being neighbours as they are a lovely bunch.“ “From time to time we can help each other with stock and such if there’s [an] emergency shortages and so on.“ Some of the first equipment used

by Partizan came from nearby Kernel Brewery, the forerunners of Bermondsey’s craft beer neighbourhood, while Andy praises the work done by Anspach and Hobday and Southwark Brewery.

We’re forced to depart with flavours still mingling in our mouths as the previous crowd dispersed towards the rest of their evening, rain drenched but content.

The future looks bright in Bermondsey with a group of passionate and exciting brewers continuing the borough’s trend of providing great beer in the heart of London.

1.

1. Transport for London hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable resurfacing works to take place on A201 New Kent Road.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

SURREY FAST bowler Stuart Meaker has signed a new two year contract with the club this week.

The Kennington club announced on Saturday that the 27-year-old, who made his début for the club in 2008, will now remain at the Kia Oval until at least the end of the 2018 season.

This season Meaker has taken fourteen wickets in the three Specsavers County Championship games he has played.

His game time has been limited recently due to injury, but his form before that brought him to the attention of the international selectors.

The two teams were set to face up in Division Two, for first elevens, of the Travelbag Surrey Championship but in the end both sides had to settle for four points each.

That outcome leaves the Southwark side in fifth place in the table on 103 points, four points ahead of Esher but 21 behind Farnham CC who sit in the second promotion spot in the table.

So far this campaign Dulwich have picked up four wins and four defeats in nine contests, with Saturday’s contest being their first abandonment of the season.

Adeniyi led the Pink and Blues side that won the Ryman League South title in 2013, playing an integral part in Hamlet’s first league title in 35 years.

In the close season Adeniyi was appointed as boss of Carshalton, who play in the Ryman League South, and they will take on Dulwich on August 2 at the War Memorial Ground at Colston Avenue, kick off time to be confirmed.

Hamlet’s game against Beckenham Town next Thursday will now not take place as the Kent side will be playing Crystal Palace next Friday.

Peckham Town promoted

PECKHAM TOWN will play in the Kent County League Premier Division next season after their promotion was confirmed in the last week.

The Menace will operate at the seventh tier of the non league pyramid, two levels below Fisher FC and four below Dulwich Hamlet.

However the promotion means they are now in the same division as another Southwark team, Stansfeld O&B FC. Peckham Town were established in 1982 and have a number of teams at both senior and junior level.

They currently play their home games at the Menace Arena which is situated near Dulwich Park.

MILLWALL LIONESSES returned to league action last week and picked up a point against London Bees, but they came agonisingly close to securing a win in their derby contest.

The Women’s Super League has been on a break during Euro 2016 and Millwall had hoped to pick up three points on the season resumption last Wednesday.

That seemed to be the case when Rinsola Babajide gave the Lionesses the lead ten minutes before the break.

The home side, who were playing this fixture at Sutton United, looked set for maximum points only to be denied three minutes from time.

That is when the Bees Merrick Will popped up to equalise and deny Millwall what would have been their second league win of the campaign.

Lionesses débutante Bonnie Horwood told the club’s website: “We played well, we were just unlucky to concede in the last few minutes, but in our next game we can build on our performance and keep progressing.

“There was a lot of pressure at the end so I think it [the goal] was coming, but I just think we were unlucky with that chance at the end.

“We’re just going to build on the positives.“ Millwall’s next game is this Saturday away at Bristol City Women, a game that kicks off at 6pm at the Stoke Gifford Stadium.

Craig ready for new battle

TONY CRAIG has promised there will be no League One play-off final hangover when the Lions’ 2016-17 campaign gets under way against Oldham on August 6.

Millwall missed out on a place in the Championship after the 3-1 defeat to Barnsley at Wembley in May, but are joint-second favourites at 10/1 to win the League One title next season and just over 3/1 to get promoted.

Neil Harris’ side made a poor start last season but will be expected to justify those odds in his second full campaign in charge.

Millwall’s form after the turn of the year has also raised expectation levels, while the quickly finalised acquisitions of wingers David Worrall and Gregg Wylde and defender Shaun Hutchinson have been well received by supporters.

The last time Millwall lost a League One play-off final, in 2009, they were promoted via the same route the following season.

However, the last two sides to lose League One play-off finals offer more cautionary tales: Swindon were beaten finalists in 2015 and slumped to a fifteenth-place finish last season, while Leyton Orient were relegated the season immediately after they lost out to

The south London derby against Charlton Athletic on Saturday, October 8 will now kick off at the earlier time of 1pm.

STEVE MORISON believes Millwall strikers will be marked men in League One this season.

Morison and Lee Gregory were boss Neil Harris’ regular front two last season, and they fired 46 goals between them in all competitions as the Lions reached the semi-finals of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and the final of the League One play-offs.

Aiden O’Brien also chipped in with thirteen goals as Millwall finished as the third-highest scorers in League One last season, behind Wigan and Peterborough.

Harris has added exciting wingers Gregg Wylde and David Worrall to his squad this summer, and they will be expected to provide the ammunition from the wide areas for Morison and Gregory this season.

The strike duo scored 29 of those 46 goals after the turn of the year as Millwall’s form really took off, and Morison wants that kind of goalscoring rate to continue from the beginning of the campaign this time.

“I think if we can replicate what we did last year, but do it from the start of the season, we’ll be in a very, very good place,” he said.

“We might have been the best partnership in the league, that’s based on stats as well, not just what people think.

“It’s going to be harder this year.

Everyone’s going to be looking for it and expecting it and trying to stop it. So we need to up our game and I’m sure we can do that.”

This pre-season is Morison’s

sixteenth as a senior professional footballer since his first with Northampton Town in 2001. He was the oldest member of the first-choice starting XI last season, but still managed the most appearances, 57 in all competitions.

Morison will celebrate his 33rd birthday in the first month of the season but he remains a crucial component in Harris’ tactical plan, providing a robust target that Millwall use to release pressure and set up attacks.

Morison has spoken of his sensible approach to diet and his lifestyle off the pitch. He says he has come back with a good level of fitness ahead of the new season after a two-week break in Portugal with his family and a stint working as a pundit for ITV for the England-Wales Euro 2016 clash.

Millwall’s players were given exercise programmes to follow during their break before the real work started last Friday, and Morison admits the approach now is entirely different to what it was when he was breaking into the Northampton side.

“It was a lot more old school than it is now, no heart-rate monitors, no GPS, just run until you drop or someone’s sick,” Morison explained. “You do the runs just trying to get in and if you’re last you’re last.

“It’s all changed nowadays, and for the better I think. Now you almost have a pre pre-season before you come back. It’s been quite nice this year finishing so late, there were a couple of weeks not doing anything and just ticking over doing a few bits, we didn’t have to do as much as we normally do.

“We’ve come back in good shape and that’s shown in the results of the tests we’ve done so far. Now it’s about getting fitter and staying injury free.”

last season before their 3-1 defeat to Barnsley in the play-off final, and Morison believes there is plenty of room for personal and team improvement.

“We want to come back and go again,” he said. “We want to do

better than we did last year. People are always looking at you when you get a bit older to start falling off. I want to stay on the wagon and replicate what I did last year. I think I can do better than I did last year.

“I’ll be ready the season.”

Chopper happy with squad fitness, hopes to trial striker

“All the testing was done Friday: jump testing, body fat, players being weighed,” Harris explained. “There were also strength tests, bench presses and other similar exercises. They also do a yo-yo run (a variation of a beep test), which is an endurance test of 20 metres.

“It’s to establish the base levels and then the sports science department and medical department can use all that data to see where people are at physically.

“Some need more gym work, some need more aerobic capacity workouts.

Fortunately most were in shape, they worry about diets which is quite common these days compared to the old days where players came back overweight.”

Meanwhile, Shaun Cummings and Christian Mbulu are the only current injury absentees. Cummings could return to first-team action in August and is currently working away from the squad with club physio Bobby Bacic as

he recovers from a knee injury that has kept him out since February.

Mbulu damaged his knee last season and is not expected to be back in competitive action until October or November.

Harris also confirmed that Harry Smith, the Folkestone Invicta striker, is not on trial at the club this week as was originally planned.

Smith, 21, is interesting the Lions and their League One rivals Gillingham, whom he trained with last season. He

has also been on trial at Scottish club Aberdeen.

The 6ft 6ins centre-forward helped Folkestone Invicta to promotion to the Isthmian League Premier Division last season, and Harris still wants the club to take a look at the player.

“Harry unfortunately has not been able to come in this week, he picked up a minor knock doing some personal training,” Harris said. “Hopefully he’ll be in next week as soon as he’s fit to do some work with us.”

MAHLON ROMEO barely got a summer break – but he’s ready for the intensity of Millwall’s training camp in Portugal.

The 20-year-old defender flew to the Caribbean a few days after Millwall’s play-off defeat to join up with his international colleagues for their 2017 Caribbean Cup qualifiers.

He was on the Antigua & Barbuda team for their 2-1 defeat to Puerto Rico on June 4, before hopping on another flight to Antigua, where he played in the 5-1 win over Grenada three days later that secured a place in the next round.

And while his Lions team-mates were enjoying themselves in Portugal, Bulgaria and Miami, Romeo had to make do with a couple of weeks’ break back in London before the start of preseason training last Friday.

Romeo will get to go to Portugal this Thursday, but it will be far from a holiday, with almost a week of three-aday training and fitness sessions awaiting the Lions squad.

But little over a year after his future was in doubt following his release by Gillingham, Romeo isn’t fazed by his truncated summer holiday.

“I just tried to get as much rest as possible [after the international fixtures],“ Romeo explained. “I didn’t go anywhere, I just put my feet up.

“Last summer, training in Portugal was a great experience. I had only signed in the last week of the season so it was really important to get involved with the team.

“A lot of our work [with Antigua] we were doing at night, but I don’t think that’s going to be the case in Portugal.

“It was really intense last year and I don’t think it’s going to be any different.“

MILLWALL MADE Irish defender Paul Rooney their fourth signing this summer.

Rooney, 19, (pictured), will initially link up with Justin Skinner’s Elite Development Squad after his move from Dublin club Bohemians.

Rooney made one senior start for Bohs in the League of Ireland this season and was previously with St Patrick’s Athletic.

Millwall boss Neil Harris, who had already signed David Worrall, Gregg Wylde and Shaun Hutchinson, welcomed Rooney to the club this week and outlined his hopes for the youngster.

“Paul came in for a few days last year to show us his talent,“ Harris said. “He's been playing in the League of Ireland as a young man in a men's division so physically he can compete.

“Paul is at a good age and will come initially to work with Justin in the U21s with the hope that in the long run he can develop into a first-team player.

“But I'm not putting any pressure on him.

He needs to come in, find his feet and enjoy himself. Fingers crossed it works out.“

Boss Harris could still recruit – but not at expense of youngsters

NEIL HARRIS isn’t ruling out signing another central midfielder – but he is wary of blocking the path to the first team for some of Millwall’s young prospects.

Lions manager Harris wants two players for each position, but at the moment has just three senior players – Jimmy Abdou, Ben Thompson and Shaun Williams – competing for two midfield spots.

Harris signed George Saville on loan from Wolves last season, and he could go down the same route if he feels the squad needs strengthening before League One kicks off on August 6.

Midfielders Kyron Farrell and Kris Twardek, who have come through Millwall’s academy, signed new oneyear deals in May, and both could challenge for spots in the first team this season.

Harris decided against offering Ed Upson a new deal this summer, with the midfielder moving to MK Dons.

Jack Powell was also released after his contract expired at the end of June.

Harris gave youngsters Thompson and Mahlon Romeo their breaks last season and watched their influence grow after they cemented their firstteam places.

The Millwall boss could still add to his squad, but he also wants to continue with the policy that was so successful last season.

“We monitor every position,“ Harris

said when asked if there were still areas that needed strengthening. “Yes I’d like two players for every position but it doesn’t necessarily have to be two first-team players at an experienced age with lots of games.

“If I take two first-team players for every position, where do the young players go? It’ll be two players for every position, or we have someone like Aiden O’Brien, for example, who is an excellent centre-forward but is also very good in the wide areas.

“In central midfield last year we had Ed Upson who only started two games there after the first week of the season. We always had the option of playing him there, as we did with Chris Taylor.

“I am conscious of the fact that with Shaun, Ben and Jimmy we have three excellent players and all three are

very capable of playing in a pair in midfield.

“But I’ve also got Kyron Farrell who is a central midfielder. And if I follow the same policy as I have since I took over then Kyron will be given an opportunity to impress in central midfield while we’re away in

Portugal and when we get back.

“The young lads will get the opportunity to impress and if they’re ready to take it, like Ben was after Christmas, then brilliant. If they’re not then we’ll have to nurture them a bit more or they might go out on loan and go from there.“

STEVE MORISON has admitted he was “upset” and “angry” after he was denied the opportunity to lead Millwall out at Wembley in May’s League One play-off final.

Morison was set to skipper the side against Barnsley, but an injury to Byron Webster in the warm-up meant the armband reverted to club captain

Striker Morison had captained the Lions for 37 games after Craig suffered a knee injury at the end of October. Much of the pre-match build-up had focussed on Morison’s career journey from the non-league to what it would mean to wear the armband at Wembley.

Instead, Craig was given that honour as he started a senior competitive game for the first time in seven months.

It was a frustrating afternoon for an injury-hit Millwall as Barnsley

claimed their place in the Championship with a 3-1 win, and Morison, speaking exclusively to the News, revealed the emotions he felt in the dressing room before kick-off.

“It was a tough one,” Morison said.

“I’d done all the formalities before the game and obviously I expected to walk out [as captain]. When I didn’t it hurt me, but it was a decision the manager made and you have to respect that.

“It wasn’t the best five minutes of my career but it’s done and dusted now and we move on.

“As soon as people start looking into it they find things that aren’t there. Don’t get me wrong, I was frustrated, I was hurt, I was upset, I was angry, but I thought I had a pretty good game on the day and it didn’t affect my performance.

“I always play angry, it’s just people don’t really notice it. I always got told off when I played nice.”

Morison, however, had no complaints about the result.

“It was just one of those things, a few things went against us on the day, we never really turned up.”

The arrival from Fulham of Shaun Hutchinson means Millwall boss Neil Harris has four senior centre-backs competing for two places.

Byron Webster will likely start the season as first choice in the centre of defence, with Hutchinson and Craig scrapping to start alongside him, and Sid Nelson, 20, in reserve.

Webster and Mark Beevers established themselves as Harris’ preferred centreback pairing in the second half of last season, but Beevers left to join Bolton this summer after his contract expired.

Craig missed six months last season through injury before being unexpectedly thrust back into the side for the play-off final against Barnsley in May, after Webster injured his hamstring in the warm-up.

Lions captain Craig, 31, can also play at left-back, but Joe Martin and Shane Ferguson are the more natural options in that position.

Hutchinson said when he signed that he will be immediately targeting a place in Harris’ starting XI, but Craig stressed that’s nothing he hasn’t faced before.

“I’ve had competition for my place my whole career,” Craig said. “That’s part and parcel of being a footballer.

“We’ve got four very good centre-backs here now and competition brings out the best in me. I had six months out last year which was a very, very long time. For me pre-season is big. I look forward to the competition, that’s what football is all about.”
