What can be done to end the gridlock around Elephant?

T

HE SITUATION at the Elephant & Castle is fast becoming intolerable - while the works on the roundabout alongside the ‘Crossrail for Bikes’ scheme will eventually make travelling in the area better – we face at least a year of massive disruption.

The unforeseen burst water main in Kennington this week left commuters utterly miserable as they abandoned buses, residents were stranded as they had the water cut off and businesses were left out of pocket.

This is something that Transport for London (TfL) obviously did not plan for, but since the work has started social media sites have been inundated with posting after posting from frustrated commuters, lost as to how any solution can be found to end the gridlock.

When London’s Transport Commissioner Sir Peter Hendy got the green light for the £913 million Cycle Superhighway he said there would “naturally, be some disruption due to these works” but added “we have some of the world’s leading highway and traffic engineers, traffic models and modellers working tirelessly to ensure that this is kept to a minimum”.

Well apart for TfL asking commuters, drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to avoid the area, especially during rush hours, we have seen nothing to back up his claims that these ‘world leading engineers and traffic modellers’ can keep the disruption to a minimum.

What can be done? Should the work on the Cycle Superhighway be done at the same time as the work by TfL is being carried out to overhaul the northern roundabout and provide two-way traffic and pedestrian crossings at surface level?

Can Southwark Council’s highway and traffic department work more closely with these world class engineers to create better routes, to move traffic away from the Elephant & Castle?

Those living amid the on-going chaos certainly need some reassurance that perhaps things will improve and that everything is being done to deal with the problem.

T LOOKS like it’s going to be a scorcher this weekend for the annual Bermondsey Carnival.

The News has supported the carnival since a group of local people led by Mick Wilmer and Matt Clague restarted it in the early 1990s.

The carnival was introduced by local families in Bermondsey following the Boer War. It has been a favourite since it was reintroduced, especially among those who have moved out of the area but like to come home to see friends and family. For years many feared that cuts to council budgets might see it disappear - thankfully that has not happened!

Hughes turns down offer to appear on I’m A Celebrity...

AFTER 32 years in Westminster, Simon Hughes could be forgiven for dreaming of a holiday – but it appears that the Australian jungle setting of “I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!” is not his idea of a relaxing break.

The former Lib Dem MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark was offered a place in the ITV show’s upcoming 15th season, but turned down the chance to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Jordan, Katie Hopkins and Joey Essex.

The hit show sees a dozen celebrities spend up to three weeks living in an Australian jungle, complete with huge insects, searing heat and stomach-churning challenges.

In past seasons, contestants have been forced to eat kangaroo

testicles, crawl through narrow tunnels infested with spiders and wear a glass bowl filled with maggots over their head to win food and treats.

Mr Hughes told the News: “I have seen the show and I like it.

I’m sure I could’ve coped with the spiders and the creepycrawlies. My brother works at a National Trust site and I once slept in a tower full of bats at a sanctuary, which would make some people feel a bit queasy.

I’ve never eaten cockroaches or anything like that, but that wouldn’t have put me off.”

He said that he received a letter from the show’s producers asking him to be a part of the next series within two weeks of losing out to Neil Coyle in May’s general election, and did give the proposal some thought.

He said: “I held a straw poll in the office with my staff, but the majority voted against me taking part. I am still looking for a slightly more serious job at the moment, and I had already

committed to speaking at a major international conference then, so I did have a legitimate excuse. I want to do something that will change the world for the better.”

Even an appearance fee rumoured to be “somewhere north of £50,000” was not enough to tempt Mr Hughes into the Aussie wilderness. It seems that after three decades in Parliament, he has had more than his fill of unnecessary challenges, squirming parasites and self-indulgent personalities...

THIEVES WHO stole tributes left at a memorial shrine for Tommy Blackmore have been slammed as “vile” and “disrespectful” by outraged mourners.

Since the 20-year-old Bermondsey boy’s passing on June 13, hundreds of flowers, cards, candles and gifts have been left in memory at Queen Elizabeth Street by grieving friends and family.

Last Sunday, his heartbroken brother discovered that callous crooks had stolen football shirts and CDs from the memorial, as well as a nitrous ‘cracker’ used to inflate balloons.

Neil Coyle, MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, said that the thieves’ actions were “so disrespectful and grim” and urged local police to scour CCTV footage to find those responsible.

He told the News: “It is just so insensitive. For Tommy’s friends and family, the memorial is a way of helping them grieve, of helping them come to terms with his passing. The people who stole these sentimental items are denying them the chance to do this.

“It’s just so disrespectful, so insensitive. It’s an incredibly grim thing that I can’t understand. I would urge those responsible, if they are reading this, to return the stolen items. I think it would be a decent gift to Tommy’s friends and family if the items were returned.”

Police’s borough commander Zander Gibson to analyse the area’s CCTV network, which he praised as being “brilliant.”

He said: “The CCTV control centre at Borough Station, co-run by Southwark Council and the Met, is a great facility and has been used to stop and solve crimes in the area. Hopefully we can use it to find those responsible.”

Mourners reacted with shock and disgust on social media.

One person said on a tribute Facebook page: “Absolutely vile - how can anyone do something like that? It’s so disrespectful. Shame on them.”

Another added: “The one thing they can't steal is the love and respect you all have for Tommy. They don't know the meaning of the words.”

Tommy died following an incident at Queen Elizabeth Road in the early hours of June 13. He was found “critically injured” and died soon after being rushed to hospital. *A 28-year-old man, Lloyd Smythe of Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, has been charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Central Criminal Court on June 29.

Local man among the Tunisian death toll PECKHAM

TRIBUTES HAVE poured in for John Stocker, the 74-year-old former Peckham resident who was amongst those killed in last week’s terrorist attack in Tunisia.

The retired printer died with his wife, Janet, in the horrific attack in the resort of Port El Kantaoui last Friday.

Thirty-eight people were killed by a terrorist, who used a Kalashnikov rifle hidden in an umbrella to mow down innocent tourists.

A social media campaign was launched after the attack, to try to track down the “young at heart” couple, who had not been in touch with their family. Their deaths were sadly confirmed on

Tuesday afternoon.

John and Janet’s family said in a statement: “Mum and dad were the happiest, most loving couple, who enjoyed life's simple pleasures as well as the pleasures and love of their extensive family and their many friends, but most of all they were still very much in love with each other.

“They were both young at heart and enjoyed all that life could offer, and especially enjoyed travelling to new places, exploring and appreciating local cultures, and they died together doing what they enjoyed most; sunbathing side by side.

“They made a huge impact on our lives, and touched the hearts of so many people and they will both be sorely missed and never forgotten by the family and all that knew and loved them for all the

Man dies after being recued from flat blaze HERNE HILL

A MAN died in hospital last week after being rescued by fire-fighters from a blaze in a Herne Hill flat.

The fire in Holmdene Avenue occurred in the building’s loft conversion at around 2.30pm last Saturday. Two people managed to escape the building before emergency services arrived, but another remained trapped inside.

Twenty-one fire fighters and officers were called to the scene, where they fought the flames and entered the building using breathing apparatus. They rescued the man from the SE24 property, but sadly he passed away in hospital later that day.

A spokesperson for the fire brigade said: “The Brigade was John Stocker and his wife Janet called at 14:28 and fire was under control at 16:46. Four fire reasons that made them so special as a couple, and engines from Brixton, West Norwood and Clapham fire as the two most honest and genuine people that stations attended the incident.”

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.. they were.”

MYSTERY STILL surrounds the circumstances that led to a teenager being found with a serious head injury at the entrance Rotherhithe Tunnel in the early hours of Friday morning.

Nearly a week has passed since police were flagged down at 4.19am and found the nineteen-year-old collapsed at the south-side entrance to the tunnel.

With investigators continuing their enquiries, the man remains in a critical condition in hospital. No arrests have yet been made.

Police believe they know the identity of the man and have informed next-of-kin.

Rotherhithe Tunnel was closed following the incident, leading to severe traffic problems in the surrounding area.

Anyone with information on the incident should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A BERMONDSEY teenager was left “crying and shaking” after she was sent home from her job at the Savoy Hotel because of her religious headscarf, according to an antidiscrimination charity.

Shaidat Olufowobi was working an agency gig at the luxury hotel on June 13 when she claims she was ordered by a staff member to remove the scarf, which she wears as part of her Muslim faith.

The distraught 18-year-old said: “First off he called it a ‘bandana’, as if it was a gang thing or a fashion choice. He confronted me in front of everyone, it was so embarrassing. So many people were watching and I was really scared.

“I told him it was for my religion and he looked sceptical. Then midway through my shift, a completely different person came over and said there was a problem with the headscarf. He pulled me aside when I was serving a customer and when I wouldn’t remove it he said I should leave.”

Tell MAMA, a charity that fights racism against Islamic people, has slammed the Savoy and accused them of “direct discrimination.”

In a letter sent to the hotel and seen by the News, the charity’s director Fiyaz Mughal said: “Section 13 of the Equality Act (2010) makes clear that direct discrimination involves treating someone less favourably because of their protected characteristic, in this case, the religious belief and Hijab (headscarf) of Shaidat.

“We have advised Shaidat of some of her basic rights on this and she can also take legal advice on this as we have

advised.

“We would like to add that Shaidat was later found crying and shaking by one of her friends and after a conversation with her today, her confidence has been severely shaken by the actions of managers in the Savoy hotel.”

He also told the News: “This is deeply worrying and the Savoy need to take seriously what she has asked for. Large

companies must realise that they are duties on them which they must comply with.”

Shaidat and Tell MAMA are demanding an apology from the hotel, as well as a promise from management that equality training will take place within six months. She also requested a donation be made from the hotel to a charity of her choosing.

Prisoner attacks Serco guard

A SERCO guard is in a critical condition after being attacked by a prisoner she was escorting from Blackfriars Crown Court to a waiting security van.

The woman, in her 50s, was “seriously assaulted” by the man at around 1.30pm on Monday at the SE1 courthouse.

Her injuries were so severe that an Air Ambulance was called. She was treated at the scene before being taken to an east London hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

The 22-year-old prisoner has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and remains in custody in a south London police station.

Shaidat said that, other than “a couple of racist comments from silly kids while walking down the Blue”, she has never been subject to discrimination before.

She said: “I know this sort of thing happens in France where they have different rules regarding head scarves, but it shouldn’t happen in London in 2015.”

A spokesperson for The Savoy told the

News: “We are aware of a misunderstanding that took place between a colleague, supplied by an agency and The Savoy. We worked together with the agency to resolve the misunderstanding.”

They added that they had not yet had time to prepare a response to the letter sent from Tell MAMA on Monday morning.

New campus for LCC in Elephant redevelopment plans

THE LONDON College of Communication is set to secure a new campus as part of the redevelopment of the Elephant and Castle.

The owner of the 1960s shopping centre has announced this week that alongside their plans to create a new ‘town centre’ on that site, it will also be working in partnership with the University of the Arts London to create a new home for the LCC. Delancey, which manages the site on behalf of the DV4 client fund and pension fund asset manager APG, remained tightlipped over the ‘second phase’ of their plans for both sites and said details would be revealed in the next fortnight.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has launched an urgent review after it was announced last week that King’s College Hospital were withdrawing their midwives from a breastfeeding clinic service, which has been running in the borough for ten years.

Last month the News reported that the service, which offers practical support and advice to breastfeeding mums, was celebrating its tenth birthday.

But last week Southwark and Lambeth councils, which fund the scheme, received notification from King’s College Hospital that as of September, they would no longer be able to staff the service.

King’s currently provides a team of four midwives to support the Community Breastfeeding Clinic, at an estimated cost to the hospital of £90,000 a year.

A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed to the News that it could no longer afford to extend the secondment of midwives to the service beyond September.

As nurses and midwives are in such short supply at the moment, the staff are also desperately needed in the hospital’s main maternity unit.

“Breastfeeding is vital for babies, and we provide breastfeeding advice and support for new mums when they

are in hospital and after they go home. However, for financial reasons, we cannot continue to fund breastfeeding support in the community, but hope an alternative solution can be found to continue this valuable service,” said the spokesperson.

Cllr Barrie Hargrove, Southwark’s cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure said: “We value this service, as do many local mothers, and while we regret King’s decision to cease their provision, we will be urgently reviewing our commissioning arrangements with our partners, to make sure that this important service continues across the borough with a minimum of disruption.”

Guy’s Hospital, which currently seconds health visitors to the service in Southwark, confirmed to the News it had no intention of pulling its staff from the scheme.

‘Beauty boulevard’ for disused garages PECKHAM: Disused garages are going to be turned into a ‘bespoke beauty boulevard’ as part of a council project.

Southwark is planning to demolish the vacant garages on Bournemouth Close and transform them into temporary commercial units - mainly offered to hairdressers and nail bars which need to be relocated from nearby Blenheim Grove.

The businesses are being moved temporarily as the council works on creating a new public square in front of Peckham Rye station.

The Bournemouth Close scheme is the first of Peckham’s four Pocket Places projects to create safer and more attractive areas.

Works in Bournemouth Close include resurfacing of paths and roads, sixteen new trees, large planters for community use, improved lighting, new parking away from the shared space and landscaping.

The council is to consult on the redevelopment of the site, and anticipates businesses can move in by summer 2016.

A BURST Thames Water main caused flooding, school closures and traffic chaos across the borough earlier this week.

Kennington Park Road was closed on Monday and Tuesday morning after the water main broke, submerging the street in up to half a metre of water.

Some vehicles, including a large truck and a bus, were abandoned by their drivers in the deluge, while traffic in surrounding areas ground to a halt as the road was closed.

Two libraries and nine schools were closed on Monday, and around fifteen properties along Kennington Park Road were flooded.

The burst main also led to many SE1, SE5, SE11, SE17 and SE24 residents experiencing no water in their homes and businesses. Water returned to some properties, but at press time the problem was still continuing for others.

When the flood was at its height, ten fire engines and 72 firefighters attended the incident.

Gareth Cook, of the London Fire Brigade, said: “Fire crews carried out pumping operations, placed sand bags by affected properties and used booms to guide floodwater down drains. Around fifteen properties were flooded along Kennington Park Road.”

Elephant and Castle roundabout was at a standstill for much of Monday and Tuesday, with dozens of buses struggling to cross the roundabout, many of them empty after passengers realised it was quicker to walk.

As well as that, several emergency services vehicles were spotted trapped in the traffic quagmire, with one commentator on social media claiming to have seen “three stuck ambulances with sirens on.”

Another person claimed that “Elephant and Castle has turned into London's most complicated car park this morning” while another added “first time I've seen twelve buses stuck behind each other.”

London said: “The water main burst in Kennington meant that Kennington Park Road was closed.

This had a knock-on effect and we saw congestion in Elephant and

“We know what an inconvenience this is for many people, especially in this hot weather, and Thames Water

has assured us they are doing all they can to fix the pipe.”

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: “The majority of our customers had their water supply back on Monday evening, however there may be some properties, particularly flats and high-rise buildings, struggling with water pressure today (Tuesday).

“We’re very sorry about this and our engineers are working hard to reroute water across our network of pipes and bring water pressure back up to normal levels.

“One lane has reopened on Kennington Park Road and our teams continue to work around the clock to repair the pipe and return the road to normal.”

THE POLICE officer responsible for overseeing the repatriation of fallen British soldiers through Wootton Bassett has written a book about his experiences and dedicated a chapter to the late Barry Albin-Dyer.

Jarra Brown, MBE, a former army commando and policeman of 22 years, met Barry in 2007 at RAF Lyneham after F.A.Albin & Sons had been given the Ministry of Defence contract to bring our boys and girls home when they had been killed in action.

Barry approached Jarra to ask if he could assist the Bermondsey firm with a police escort for the cavalcade through Wootton Bassett and to the M4.

“I knew straight away this was a man with a presence. He spoke so eloquently with a voice that flowed with so much compassion,” said Jarra, who became such good friends with Barry over the years as they brought hundreds of troops home, that he flew in from Cyprus last week to attend his funeral. Jarra launched his new book, 46 miles referring to the journey he made with Barry between RAF

Lyneham and the M4 – to thousands of people on Saturday.

In it he has dedicated a chapter to the late, great funeral director and his legacy - the family firm.

“I had no hesitation dedicating a chapter in my book to Barry Albin-Dyer due to the huge honour, dignity and respect Albin’s showed to each of our fallen who paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Jarra.

“Let there be no doubt in anyone’s mind, who lost a loved one, the level of care that was administered in returning each precious loved one home, was second to none.”

IT’S NOT every day you see your parish priests locked up in wooden stocks getting pelted with wet sponges, but this was just one of the highlights of the St Peter’s Church Party in the Park last week.

The event at Faraday Gardens last Saturday had something for all the family, from a helter skelter slide to a tug-of-war. There was also face painting, music, fairground games, a merry-goround and food and drink stalls.

The Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle, joined in the fun and games, as did newly-elected MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle, who was entrusted with drawing the raffle for a camera phone.

Footloose pupils wow judges with war dance

FOOTLOOSE PUPILS at Redriff Primary School danced their way to victory at a national competition earlier this week.

The students showed off their moves at the Great Big Dance Off in Birmingham on Monday, seeing off 30 other groups of regional finalists.

The creative kids choreographed and performed an original piece based on World War 2 and inspired by the school’s dockland past.

Headteacher Sheila Cohring said:

“Redriff had the very last slot of the day, which meant they had to wait a long time to perform with nerves reaching a crescendo, it also meant that they were able to watch a lot of the other finalists.

“When their turn finally came around they performed magnificently and with great precision, like true professionals. They won the hearts of the crowd and the judges. Travelling home on the tube at 8.30 in the evening they even treated other travellers to some singing and dancing spreading their joy across London.”

Up to £10k granted to investigate closing residential road to traffic

ROAD SAFETY campaigners in Dulwich received a boost last week when up to £10,000 was granted for a feasibility study into closing their ‘rat run’ of a road to traffic.

Residents of Melbourne Grove are worried for their safety due to the speed at which cars drive along their road,

which acts as a short cut between East Dulwich Grove and Lordship Lane.

A study showed that around 15,000 cars a week use this route, with over half of them driving above the 20mph speed limit.

At a recent Dulwich Community Council meeting, a deputation of speakers made the case for a barrier to be put in the road and presented a petition with 138 signatures.

DCC councillors approved a fund of £5,000-£10,000 to be put towards a feasibility study. Traffic will be analysed further and residents of Melbourne Grove and surrounding roads will be consulted.

Cllr James Barber said: “The deputation was particularly impressive.

They had six speakers and a group of around fifteen to 20 supporters. They had put together a marvellous

information pack.

“While there may be some anticipated issues including knock-on effects for neighbouring roads, it is definitely worth investigating. If I lived on Melbourne Grove, I would want it closed.”

A resident who lives on nearby Tell Grove, who preferred not be named, said: “With two new schools coming I think it is worth looking into. My kids

and I cycle down Melbourne Grove and cars absolutely race by. It’s not so bad on major roads where cars and cyclists expect each other, but on smaller roads it’s a nightmare and a real danger.

“However, I don’t know if I’m for or against the proposal. If it merely displaced traffic onto other roads then it clearly wouldn’t be the best idea.

However, it is certainly something that should be studied.”

Lib Dems call for new consultation on graveyard plan

SOUTHWARK LIB Dems have called for a public re-consultation over plans to develop green spaces in Camberwell Old and New Cemeteries into new burial plots.

Group leader Anood Al-Samerai will table the motion at the upcoming Southwark Council meeting on July 8, where she will question “the validity of Southwark Council’s 2011 consultation process and the lack of financial detail around their proposals. “ They claim that the 2011 consultation “focused on Honor Oak Recreation Ground, not the disputed woodland in Old and New Cemeteries, and the majority of respondents were Lewisham residents.”

At the meeting, Save Southwark Woods campaigners will present the council with a petition of over 8,000 people, who object to the plans to knock down trees to make space for thousands of new burial plots.

We have engaged extensively with London Wildlife Trust and the local community, to ensure that the plans for managing the cemeteries improve biodiversity and create quality open space for local people, as well a respectful place for the deceased.”

ONE OF the Bermondsey’s bestknown photographers passed away earlier this month at the age of 87.

Arthur ‘Alfie’ Wood, who ran the AL Wood (Photographer) shop in Jamaica Road for many years until 1996, died peacefully on June 14.

He was born in St Olav’s Church in 1928 and spent his youth scampering around the borough with his friends.

His grandson Darren Knight told the News: “He used to love exploring the docklands and communities in Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. He loved the boats and the workers.”

He would earn a penny or so every weekend by wheeling homemade

barrows around the area, helping with deliveries.

During WW2, his home off Lower Road was devastated by a bomb, but luckily he and his family were safe in an underground shelter. Later on in the war, they sheltered in Brunel Road, where they watched the relentless bombing of Surrey Docks and the infamous fire lasting several days that followed.

His first job was in the leather industry as a skinner. In 1966, however, he discovered his true passion: photography. He began working at a shop located roughly where the Albins funeral home is now, before later moving to Jamaica Road.

Darren said: “He didn’t sit still from 1966 until he technically retired in 1994 – although even after that no one would

let him rest! He was constantly taking photos of events, and even up until two years ago people were still asking for him.”

“The best photo he ever took was just on a normal London Marathon day. He was walking along and took a quick snap. He printed it and put it in his shop window, and it was his most popular print.

“He completely captured the joy and happiness of the people in the crowd in such a natural way.”

An old article from 1988 in the Southwark News, then called the Bermondsey News, highlighted Arthur’s place in the community, noting that “no wedding or occasion in Bermondsey would be complete without him.”

it’s going to work out for the people here in the community.”

Delighted tennis fans then got a chance to play with the man himself, rallying with the Swiss star on the new courts.

Tribute acts to rock n’ roll greats to play fundraiser in The Blue

A ROCK’n’roll extravaganza will take place in The Blue, Bermondsey, later this month in aid of the London Air Ambulance.

The toe-tapping fundraiser will be held outside the Old Bank Pub on July 19, beginning at 10am and rocking around the clock until 8pm.

Boasting musical performances, food and drink stands and games, the benefit will offer something for all the family.

Fans of classic rock are in luck, with a number of different acts performing tributes to some of music’s best-loved icons, including Elvis, Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison. The first musical performance will begin at 12.30pm, with others beginning at 2.30pm and 4.30pm.

As well as this there will be a bouncy castle, raffles, a disco, karaoke, a beer tent, Indian food and much more.

All money raised will go towards the London Air Ambulance, the life-saving charity that serves the ten million people who live, work and travel within the M25.

They attend five serious incidents per day, providing a level of treatment and reaching areas that ambulances cannot.

They are currently fundraising to buy a second helicopter, which would double the amount of life-saving work the charity would be able to provide.

Mark Davies, Director of Development at London’s Air Ambulance, said: “Our community events are not only a brilliant day out for all of the family, but they also generate vital funds that help us treat critically injured people in London when they urgently need it. Last year we treated 47 patients in Southwark alone, so I’m urging everyone in the Bermondsey area to head on down, have fun, and help us continue to save lives – both in the borough and across London.”

THE MAYOR of Southwark said that her recent hair-raising charity stunt, in which she abseiled down the side of King’s College Hospital, was “just the start” of her year of fundraising.

After braving the 100-foot descent with Michelle Thorpe, the Pearly Queen of Rotherhithe, Dora DixonFyle said she was looking “onwards and upwards” for more ways to raise money for Guy’s and St Thomas’ cancer centre.

She told the News: “Looking back, I’m really pleased. I feel really courageous and that I can do anything. However, on the day itself I was a bit shocked because it was even higher than we expected! It was hard but I could hear people on the ground chanting in support, so I managed to do it.”

The recently-appointed Mayor is already planning her next heartracing fundraiser, a sponsored window-cleaning jaunt up the Shard.

She said: “The response has been great, with even Millwall getting in touch to say I was a ‘lioness’, which was a first! It was definitely worth

She said: “I’ve done this before so I had to coach Dora down a bit, but hats off to her, she did it and we raised a lot of money.

“I’m the only person to ever abseil in a pearly suit! I was going to wear a skirt but it wasn’t a good idea, so I wore bloomers instead. All of the old girls watching were laughing, it was quite funny.

“I’d like to say thank you to everyone who sponsored us and to please keep giving generously.”

Cyclist injured in lorry collision BOROUGH: A woman in her twenties was hospitalised on Monday after a collision between a cyclist and a lorry.

The incident occurred shortly before 10am at Southwark Street, close to the junction with Blackfriars Bridge.

The woman was taken to hospital

with “non life-threatening” injuries, according to a Met police spokesperson.

The road was closed to eastbound traffic following the accident, adding to the borough’s rush-hour chaos which was already at a standstill due to construction works and a burst water main in Kennington.

I

n post-war Bermondsey, everyone knew Wally’s Fish and Chip Shop in the Old Kent Road. People queued down the street most nights and flocked there from as far north as Rotherhithe and as far west as Brixton, to get a bag of chips fried in beef dripping and wrapped up in that day’s newspaper.

Dishing out an extra portion to her hard up customers so they could feed their kids, was Hilda Kemp - or ‘ooray ‘ilda as her boss Wally came to call her... and his beloved greyhound.

The story of Hilda’s violent upbringing in Bermondsey was told in Hilda’s childhood autobiography, ‘We ain’t got no drink, Pa’. Now her granddaughter Cathryn has fulfilled Hilda’s dying wish by telling the story of her adult life on the Redriff Estate and behind Wally’s serving counter in ‘A Fish Supper and a Chippy Smile’.

Even when Hilda was eight months pregnant with her third child, she still walked the thirty-minute route to and from her home on the Redriff Estate and the shop in the Old Kent Road. She would pass the many bombsites on the way, in which the children used to play, and take in the familiar smells of the soot and coal from the factories, the bitter stink of the tanneries and the sweet vanilla smell pumping out of Peak Freans.

Working at Wally’s six days a week, Hilda got a glimpse into the lives of her regular customers.

Like ‘Old Man Bill’, who was ‘a true east end character’. Living alone in his eighties, Bill arrived at the chip shop at 5.15 sharp every evening for a meat pie and chips with a pickled onion – regular as clockwork. Hilda would make a great fuss of him every time, wondering if she might be his only human contact. The only thing she knew about him really was that he had fought in the Boer War and that he had once been married. Hilda always wrapped his hot dinner in the sports page of the paper so he had something to read afterwards.

No one had very much in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe in the 1940s. Most scraped by each week, with a little help from the‘Uncles’ (pawn shops) if the cupboards were bare and buying the kids clothes through the ‘Provy lady’ (Provident Financial doorstep lender) for a few pennies a week.

The queue of locals in the chippie was no different. Queenie and Jack had seven children, lost three as babies and struggled to feed the other four on the pittance Jack got from doing odd jobs.

They lived in the back of a bombed out tenement in Bermondsey with not a clean piece of clothing between them, but they never complained. Queenie always had a smile, even if it was with black teeth.

In the summer of 1950, Hilda and her husband Bert fell on their own hard times. Bert had just got a job as a meat delivery driver at Smithfield Market when an unofficial strike was called. No one would be paid until it was over. There was no Job Seeker’s Allowance or crisis welfare payments to keep you going in those days, so if you didn’t bring the money in there would be no food on the table. With Hilda heavily pregnant and Bert out of work, the spare chips she brought home at the end of her shift

would not stretch to feed the family. For three weeks she eked out the cupboard scrapings until there was literally nothing left. With her wages just barely covering the rent, there was no money for food and Hilda was too proud to ask her neighbours for help, as a lot of them were in a similar position. As she wept in despair at her kitchen table, there was a knock at the door. When she answered, a parcel of bread, sardines and Bovril had been left on the doorstep for her.

That got them out of a tight spot but they were still on the breadline for weeks to come and like so many mothers then, Hilda skipped meals so her children could eat. After giving the last slice of bread to her son Albie, who was seven at the time, she sent him out to play. He came back in unexpectedly to see her eating the scraps of leftovers from his plate. Her face reddened with “the shame of not having enough money to feed your own child”. The realisation spread across his face as he spluttered out: ‘You said you’d eaten earlier’.

Hilda, who had grown up in a slum, was used to just surviving from one day to the next and in a few weeks the strike had ended and life went back to normal With just about two pennies to rub together Hilda counted herself lucky to have a good husband, a home, two children and one more on the way. “I might not have had cars or jewellery but I had what mattered the most: I had love, and I had it in abundance,” she told her granddaughter.

Working in the best chippie in town had its advantages, not least the free leftover chips to take home. Owner Wally and his wife Betty also gave Hilda and her family their first glimpse at a television set. In 1954 Wally invited them round to check out his new Motorola, which he described as ‘Top spec – absolutely the best television on the market’. As Hilda and Ted had just spent months paying off a radiogram, even the idea of having a television in your house seemed out of this world – certainly out of the world of the Redriff Estate.

“Gawd it’s a miracle,” stuttered Hilda as the light came on and there appeared a girl with long hair holding a piece of white chalk against a blackboard. Albie jumped up and down in excitement and the adults spent over an hour staring at the BBC holding screen in amazement.

The television was a sign the shop was doing well. But as the Krays and the Richardsons started to rule the roost, this made Wally very nervous that his success would make him a protection racket target. As it happened it was Hilda and Bert who ended up getting a knock at the door from a shady character in a whistle an’ flute. Sidney used to work with Bert on the delivery lorries but now he was on their doorstep in the dead of night to call in a favour. Producing a bulging black bag in their hallway he asked them to ‘look after it’ for him for a couple of days.

Unsure of the consequences of turning him down, they accepted and put it out of the way until he returned. Several days later Sidney came for his bounty and Hilda handed it over, saying neither her

nor Bert had so much as peeked inside.

Amused by her honesty and naivety, he unzipped the bag to reveal wads of blue bank notes in pristine condition. He handed a bundle to her and let the notes scatter everywhere.

“Well blow me,” thought Hilda. “I’d never seen a five pound note in all my life and here there were hundreds of them covering my floor.”

That was enough to signal to Hilda that life in London was changing. The old close-knit community leaving their doors unlocked was a thing of the past and it was time to get out.

The family moved to Surrey and a few years later Wally and Betty moved to Carshalton, marking the end of an era as the best chippie in Bermondsey closed its doors.

“My dad is my hero”, says Charlotte after kidney op A 15-YEAR-OLD girl has named the kidney she received from her father in a transplant operation “Bobby” in honour of his hero, the legendary footballer Bobby Moore.

Earlier this year Phil Gay had one of his kidneys removed at Guy’s Hospital so that it could be transplanted to his daughter Charlotte, who had kidney failure two years ago.

Charlotte says: “I named my dad’s kidney Bobby because on the day of our transplant he was wearing a top with Bobby Moore on and he told me he was wearing it because Bobby Moore is his hero. Dad is my hero and so I thought the name was perfect.

“Since receiving my dad’s kidney, my life has changed completely. I get to spend much more time with my friends and doing the things I love. I feel a lot more normal and this makes

me so happy.”

Before the transplant Charlotte was dependent on receiving dialysis treatment four nights each week, had to put up with severe dietary restrictions, and could not take part in sports and other activities.

There are almost 30,000 people in the UK who, like Charlotte, are living with a working kidney transplant.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is a major centre for kidney transplantation, carrying out more than 200 kidney transplants each year.

Nizam Mamode, consultant transplant surgeon at Guy’s and St Thomas’, says: “It's great to see that the transplant has been such a success for Charlotte and for Phil. But there are still a significant number of patients waiting for a transplant.

“In the UK three people die each day while in need of a

transplant.

There are currently around 10,000 people in need of an organ transplant. It remains as crucial as ever for people to join the NHS Organ Donor Register.”

Anyone can join the NHS Organ Donor Register. Age is not a barrier to being a donor and nor are most medical conditions.

Repaving St Thomas' main entrance

A resurfacing project to improve the main approach to St Thomas’ Hospital started on 22 June. The work to repave the route will improve the drainage of rainwater and create a smoother and more even surface.

Access for patients and visitors from Westminster Bridge Road to the main entrance of the hospital will be maintained at all times.

The resurfacing work will take place from 8am5pm seven days a week. Any noisy works will be carried out before 9am or at weekends to minimise disruption. The project is due to be completed by the end of August.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ is smoke-free GUY'S AND St Thomas' is celebrating helping more than 1,000 people quit smoking after the Trust went smoke-free on 19 June.

Patients and visitors can no longer smoke anywhere on hospital and community premises. Smoking e-cigarettes is also not permitted. Staff have not been allowed to smoke on Guy’s and St Thomas’ premises since January 2014.

Work starts on ‘home away from home’

TV PRESENTER Jeff Brazier carried out the groundbreaking for a new £13 million ‘home away from home’ for families whose children are being treated in Evelina London Children’s Hospital.

The new Ronald McDonald House Evelina London will provide free accommodation for as long as families need it, so they can be on hand for their

child at a moment’s notice.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity provided the land for the new House on Lambeth Road, just 10 minutes’ walk from Evelina London. It will be run by Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Dr Grenville Fox, consultant neonatologist and clinical director for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and medical specialties in Evelina London Children’s Hospital, says: “We’re

seeing more children having to travel ever greater distances for medical treatment. Some are with us for as little as a day, others stay for many months. This new Ronald McDonald House will provide much-needed support and enhance our family-centred care.”

The new House replaces the Charity’s 20-bedroom House near Guy’s Hospital.

SEVENTIES HITMAKERS Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel will be headlining this year’s Bermondsey Carnival, a day of music and fun that attracts thousands of revellers to Southwark Park.

This year’s programme of live music also features Nine Below Zero, Jo N’Gala Bantu Blues and Mancie Baker.

There will be lots of family activities including the SE16 Dance Hall created by local dancers, musicians and entrepreneur Laura Erwin, Millwall FC, Dockland Bell ringers, climbing walls, the BMX track, food from around the world, a massive second hand market, sports and games and Reuben Bond’s funfair.

The internationally renowned Kinetika Bloco will also return with parade.

Here’s the News’ full run down of the day’s line-up:

Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel – 6.30pm

Steve was born in Deptford and is excited to be returning to his south London roots.

From an early age he realised he wanted to be in a band after being

inspired by meeting the Rolling Stones.

Steve’s musical journey kicked off in London folk clubs and progressed to him forming Cockney Rebel. The band were quickly scouted and signed by EMI Records and went on to release several hit albums which spawned many hit singles, the most notable being the timeless Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me) which became

the top selling hit of 1975 and is regularly voted among the top singles in history and is still one of the most played records on popular radio stations to this day.

Nine Below Zero – 5pm

Nine Below Zero are the UK’s top blues band, renowned for their

tireless spirit, non-stop touring and nailing their home grown blues to the floor of stages, worldwide.

Formed in south London, back in 1977 during the punk era, NBZ honed their sound on the pub rock circuit including regular gigs in the Thomas A Beckett and the Apples and Pears in Bermondsey, where their celebrated harmonica player Mark Feltham grew

up.

Along the way they have shared the stage with a veritable who’s who of the rock and blues scene. They are equally at home in venues large or small and are just as vibrant and unpredictably brilliant as they have always been.

Jo N’Gala Bantu Blues 3.30pm Jo N’Gala‘s Bantu Blues encapsulates a blend of philosophy and human experience in his imaginative musical rhythms and beats to conjure music that brings to the stage a truly authentic flavour of Africa and its culture.

Mancie Baker – 2.10pm

Mancie Baker, 16, is set to create a south east London entertainment dynasty as she follows in her father’s footsteps of fame. The singersongwriter is the daughter of presenter, writer and DJ, Danny Baker, and has been packing regulars into the Pelton Arms in Greenwich with a solo spot every Sunday afternoon.

“All I do is listen to music, that’s all I do.

I just started playing the guitar. I thought, I can do this,” she said. “It was a lot of Googling how to play the guitar and YouTube and stuff. It didn’t take that long because you only learn the basics of guitar and that’s all you need.”

Bermondsey Voice Choir – 1pm

Bermondsey Voices is a community choir made up from people across the world - including Belgium, Australia, Ghana and the UK, and their musical director, Kristina, is from Sweden.

Only two and a half years old, the choir has racked up quite a list of performances including at the Young Vic, the Southbank Centre, they sing with gusto every September at the fun and funky Bermondsey Street Festival and in December, they hold a sparkling and fabulous Christmas concert in a packed St James’ Church.

YOU DON’T need to ask Mark Feltham twice if he is excited about returning to Bermondsey to play with his blues band Nine Below Zero, writes Joey Millar...

“It’s going to be magic!” he said.

“I’ve still got the passion for the area.

I left in 1974 but I still get a buzz every time I go back. It’s going to be tremendous to play in front of old friends again, I’m really happy to be heading back.”

This will be Nine Below Zero’s third time at the Bermondsey Carnival, and the harmonica player has loved each previous visit.

“It’s always great to play in front of Bermondsey people. The area has changed, but the people are still the same. The community spirit is still here.”

Mark began playing with the band during the late 1970s, when they performed at venues including the Thomas A Becket pub in the Old Kent Road and the Apples and Pears on the Bonamy Estate.

They made it big in 1980, releasing their first album and headlining at the Hammersmith Odeon.

The following year they supported The Who and The Kinks on tour, and soon after released their album Third Degree, which spent six weeks in the UK charts.

The band broke up soon after, however, with band members going

their separate ways. Mark went into session music, most notably with Rory Gallagher, whom he spent many years supporting.

However, they reformed in the early

1990s, occasionally touring and releasing new music since. Playing at the Bermondsey Carnival has been a constant highlight for Mark, who still holds fond memories of growing up in

the area.

“My dad ran a fruit’n’veg stall down the Blue and I remember other people selling their wares from wheelbarrows.

It was a different time, everyone had

their doors open. I moved out to Beckenham and it is just a world apart.”

Steve Harley revved up for 'homecoming'

EVEN AFTER all these years, Southwark still feels like home to Steve Harley, writes Joey Millar...

The lead singer for Cockney Rebel, headliners of the Bermondsey Carnival, may be living a tranquil life on the Norfolk border these days, but he has far from forgotten about his old stomping ground.

“It’s a homecoming,” he told the News.

“It’s like playing at home. I don’t get south of the river very much anymore, so it’ll be great to get back to Bermondsey.”

While Steve was born in Deptford and grew up in New Cross, he spent much of his childhood in Southwark.

“I spent a lot of time in Surrey Docks – or Surrey Quays as it’s called now since it was yuppified! My best friend’s dad owned Jay’s Stores, which sold working clothes for the dockers. That’s what Bermondsey means to me, the dockers and the real people.”

He talks fondly of walking to Millwall games at the Old Den during the 1960s, of playing football in Peckham Rye, of talking to his father about his own memories of kicking a ball about in Southwark Park. He’s come a long way since those early days, but he hasn’t forgotten his roots.

Steve took the scenic route into rock’n’roll, starting out as a reporter during the lateSixties. While he enjoyed the newsroom atmosphere, he soon grew tired of the rules and of “hurting people.”

He said: “I was already a bit of a weekend hippy at that point and was getting to be a bit rebellious. In a way I was trying to get sacked, because if you managed that you were straight on the dole, whereas if you resigned you had to wait.”

It didn’t take long for his career to take off once he began focusing solely on music. His band signed with EMI Records in 1972 and released their debut album the following year. Their first hit, Judy Teen, reached number five in the UK charts in 1974, It was their subsequent single, Come Up To See Me (Make Me Smile), that really established Cockney Rebel as rock’n’roll heavyweights. The song went to number one, selling over one million records, and has been covered more than 120 times by artists including Duran Duran and Erasure.

Things have quietened down since, but Steve is still clearly passionate about his music. He speaks excitedly about an upcoming gig at an outdoor amphitheatre in Holt, Norfolk, and reminisces fondly about past shows across Britain, Ireland and abroad.

For Steve, however, there really is no place like Bermondsey. “I can’t wait to play in Southwark Park for real Londoners, for old friends and family. I’m looking forward to coming home.”

We are clear about the need for a twobranch route, to serve Camberwell and Peckham and the Old Kent Road, both of which are currently underserved by public transport.

The recent consultation on the Bakerloo line extension showed clearly that it is a key priority for our residents. The community have been fantastic in campaigning passionately for both routes and we will continue to push for a two-branch extension to serve existing residents, support new development and bring much-needed investment to both areas.

Winners of the Nellie Stockwell Cup - but who was Nellie?

ON TUESDAY 23rd June hundreds of children came to Southwark Park for a primary school athletics festival.

The Friends of Southwark Park sponsored the Nellie Stockwell Cup for the outstanding school, which was won in style by Rye Oak, Peckham. But who was Nellie?

We know she was a pupil at Albion School Rotherhithe in the early years of the twentieth century and that she won the prize as best athlete at the South London Sports Festival five years running between 1908-1912. Reports of the time said she had her portrait displayed in the Albion School hall and that the secret of her success was eating lots of sugar! We decided to remember her achievements with a trophy.

We think she may have married James Tuck in Bermondsey in 1920.

It may not be widely known that two years ago Barry passed over his business to his sons Simon and Jon. He did this before he received the frightening news of his brain tumour and when he still believed himself to be in the best of health. He did this because he had full confidence that his sons were ready to take over the responsibility and running of this great family firm. The way in which the boys have run the firm during Barry’s illness and the way in which they led the mourning and the tributes to their father has shown not only

their unlimited love and admiration for Barry but how right he was that his firm and its future would be safe in their hands.

Simon and Jon, Barry’s partner Jackie, and all staff of Albins will continue to grieve for many weeks as they adapt to a Bermondsey without Barry – something we all sadly have to do. As they go on looking after bereaved families day in and day out, I hope they will all be greatly comforted by the love and support that we will give them now, and in the future.

Save Southwark Woods from becoming graves

CRUB, SCRUB, Scrub....

Anytime Southwark Council wants to bulldoze yet another local woodland, you can be sure some councillor will call it unsightly “scrub” and so not “really” natural or woodland worth preserving.

This is exactly what they did when they barbarically bulldozed Camberwell Green’s only little community orchard. Well it is Cllr Peter John saying it this time. He is reported as describing the beautiful woodland in Camberwell Old Cemetery, that they want to bulldoze to create 4,800 new graves, as “scrubby”.

It really is worth judging for your-self the aerial video of the beautiful “scrubby” woodland that is on the campaign group’s website at www.savesouthwarkwoods.org.uk .

The battle to save these woodlands and the playing fields at Honor Oak Park from being bulldozed into ugly lines of gravestones has been going on intermittently for decades. Southwark will have a population of over 350,000 by 2035, which means over 312,000 deaths during the next century. It is impossible to find burial space for all of us. We must accept that Southwark’s inner city graveyards are full and let them be a beautiful 100 acre nature site. Estimates of the costs of providing the new graves vary up to £15 million. Southwark could instead use the money to buy land in the greenbelt just five miles to the south and establish a green cemetery. Here those, whose religions require them to have a burial, could instead of endless rows of gravestones with manicured grass, have a tree planted in their memory with a little plaque.

In life our generation has wreaked so much environmental destruction on the planet, that the very future of humanity is threatened with the climate crisis.

Surely it is not too much to ask that in our deaths we make a positive legacy and not bequeath yet more destruction?

The campaign is delivering their petition (which already has an amazing 6,400 signatures) to Southwark Council on July 8th. The petition link is on their website and their Facebook page is Save Southwark Woods.

Come on Cllr Peter John, open your heart to the beauty of these woodlands, scrub the bulldozing and create a beautiful new woodland cemetery instead. Yes You/We Can!

Ups and downs of Decision ENTERING IN to Carsten Höller’s Decision is a scary joy, and exiting the exhibition is pure bliss, but these two show stoppers bookended very little in between to raise enjoyment levels, which I’m guessing was the ultimate aim of the artist, writes Michael Holland...

Your first decision is to either enter through a pitch-black corridor where the claustrophobic would go insane but where those not scared of the dark can have a lot of fun as they feel their way forward and around all the twists and turns, or choose an entrance that gets you to the same place by more conventional means. Me and my partner in cultural crime chose the dark side, although he made it clear half way through that he had made his first bad decision…

You emerge to Flying Mushrooms, whose back story were more interesting than the actual piece, and then Pill Clock where a pill drops on to the gallery floor every 3 seconds to create its own artwork. The work includes a water dispenser where you can take a pill. Nice thinking behind it but the whole didn’t amount to much.

Forests, watched through 3D headsets, promised more than it delivered, and the Roaming Beds were a yawn. Walking into the gloom of another room we found Fara Fara, a two-screen video about the Congolese music scene, which I found surprisingly good, but more for the music than any artistic qualities.

Twins was a clever idea but not made enough of. Walking through an avenue of screens with sets of twins facing each other and uttering contradictory statements was interesting but it was over as soon as it began.

Of course we had to try on the Upside Down Goggles that presented the world to you just like that, but they were so ill-fitting you spent any quality time with them making adjustments or holding them on. And, of course, we did not go near riding Two Flying Machines, but stared at those who did have a go and felt pleased that we had

made the right decision to resist. The participants merely hung there, revolving slowly, wishing they could really fly away form the shame.

And so to the Isomeric Slides, the USP of Decision, and the means to leave the exhibition as you swirl down and down and round and round the helter-skelter like tubes and out to the gallery’s exterior. You arrive at speed at the bottom feeling exhilarated and quite light-headed. I’ve paid a lot of money to feel like that.

During the epic rendition of Hey Jude I glanced to my left and saw my previously reluctant friend, eyes closed, hands waving in the air, mouth screaming along, ‘La la la la la la la HEY JUDE!’. ‘Let it Be’ is that sort of show…

IF THE room above the Thomas A Becket pub could talk, the stories it would tell would stretch back hundreds of years.

It was withdrawn from auction last week after the Walworth Society successfully managed to get the historic pub listed as an asset of community value, writes Amelia Burr...

A tavern on the same site was mentioned in Chaucer’s Cantebury Tales and in 1888, a suspect in the Jack the Ripper murder case was arrested after leaving a bag in the pub containing knives and ‘curious

looking scissors’.

More recently, David Bowie used the second floor as a rehearsal room during the early 1970s, when he was writing his iconic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album.

For all these historic accolades, the Bermondsey boozer will always be synonymous with Our ‘enry – the late, great, Sir Henry Cooper OBE. Henry trained in the gym upstairs for fourteen years from 1956, when Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier would drop by for sparring practice while in the country.

Henry and his twin brother George were “the biggest surprise” of their mother’s life when they were born on May 3, 1934. She was expecting one child whom she planned to call Walter. In his autobiography, Henry said the nurse took one look at the two babies and said 'They're a proper little Henry and George. They're going to be six-footers’ – and their names were set in that moment.

Henry and George grew up in Daneville Road in Camberwell until they were six and the family had been in Southwark for generations, with Henry’s grandfather making a living as a horse-trader around the Elephant.

A propensity for boxing ran in the family with Henry’s father, also called Henry, a decent amateur boxer when he was in the forces.

Henry’s brother George also fought as an amateur and a professional boxer, though he enjoyed a less distinguished career.

Henry won 40 of his 55 contests, 27 by knockout, in a seventeen-year career from 1954 to 1971. But it was a fight he did not win that carved out his place in boxing history – the night he floored ‘The Greatest’ – Muhammed Ali on 18 June 1963.

Pre-fight predictions by the then Cassius Clay said Cooper was in for a beating. But in the fourth round a left hook from Cooper left Ali on his pants and within a whisker of defeat.

Henry’s ‘ammer left hook was a feared weapon, estimated to travel fifteen times faster than a Saturn V rocket, but his weakness was how easily his skin was cut by a blow.

After Henry’s rocket punch floored ‘The Greatest’ in front of 55,000 people, a rip in Ali’s glove extended the formal minute interval by six seconds, controversially giving him precious recovery time.

At the beginning of the fifth round Ali came out fighting and landed a punch which opened up a hideous cut on Henry’s face - forcing a stoppage and handing the win to Ali. Cooper would fight on until 1971 when he retired after a controversial loss to Joe Bugner – his last fight was the one defeat he could never come to terms with.

After fifteen rounds, the pair were on a fairly equal footing but it was assumed Henry – the then 37-year-old British and European champion would get the decision. Referee Harry Gibb stunned the crowd when he walked towards Bugner at the end and lifted his arm into the air. Henry refused to speak to Gibb for the next 30 years.

The extensive charity work carried out by Sir Henry, along with his legendary adverts for Old Spice, saw the giving and caring side of the Camberwell giant come out.

Being made a captain on BBC’s Question of Sport for three years made him a household favourite. He was the first person to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award twice (in 1967 and 1970) and became Britain's first boxing knight in 2000.

He proudly received a Southwark Blue Plaque in 2007, four years before his death at the age of 76 on May 1, 2011.

After his death, boxing figureheads

in the borough paid tribute to the local legend.

When the Lynn Amateur Boxing Club were moved from their home in Manor Place in the 1960’s they shared the Old Kent Road club with Sir Henry, which established a 40 year friendship with current club director Keith Walters.

“His cut man Danny Holland said come along and share the gym, so in the ‘60s we used to be there regularly while he trained. Even then he had time for the amateurs as he was a great one himself,” Keith told the News back in 2011.

Fisher coach, Steve Hiser, who knew Henry from the Thomas A Becket gym, said: “He was a lovely man but he did not suffer fools gladly.

“I remember him training there and being on a speedball, he was like lightning on that thing…

“He was a true gentleman.”

THE MOST zen café in London is closer than you think. I don’t mean one of those faux zen venues that puts a plastic Buddha statue on the window sill, a spiritually vague quote on their chalkboard and calls it a day, writes Laura Burgoine...

The Jamyang Buddhist Centre’s courtyard café in Kennington is home to yogis and people fresh from meditation courses. These folks make for ideal coffee shop companions: calm, unobtrusive, respectful. They don’t induce annoyance like the hipster creative posing at a laptop, taking up an entire table and leaving a knapsack rudely flung in the path of the waiters and patrons. Nor do they create irritation and noise pollution like the kids screaming – on all our behalf - that infants and small children have no interest in Fairtrade Ethiopian coffee beans and gluten-free paninis.

No, the Buddhist café is a sublime oasis free from the mania of London’s café culture.

Open Monday to Friday from 10am until 4pm, the charity’s café (right next to the Cinema Museum) serves original vegetarian recipes, Monmouth coffee and a selection of freshly baked cakes at very reasonable prices.

The quiet, spacious paved courtyard is peppered with potted plants and greenery. Sitting at one of the wooden tables in the golden afternoon sunlight, drinking an organic ginger beer, is truly a breath of fresh air. The staff – mostly volunteers - are incredibly friendly and the food is fresh and absolutely delicious. It’s all

the food I wish I could cook. I never eat pasta but I could happily eat their Italian homemade pasta every day.

Flat-ribbon pasta cooked with greens and cubed potatoes, layered with cheese and finished with garlic and sage, lightly fried in butter, Pizzoccheri is the perfect advertisement for meat-free meals.

The ‘quiche of the moment’ served with roasted savoy cabbage and potatoes was simple but rich in flavour, complemented perfectly with a colourful mix of garden fresh salad.

I didn’t have time to stay for coffee but I’ll certainly be back - the Monmouth coffee is cheap at £2.50 and the surroundings make it an ideal location for a mindful latte. Head chef Illaria Mezzogori and the volunteers kindly packed me boxes of cake selections to take back to the office; cakes or any mix of sugar and carbohydrate will always be well received by a bunch of journalists on deadline, but the homemade delights of the Buddhist centre were particularly popular. The double

chocolate and almond gluten-free cake was decadent and disguised its lack of wheat well, with one of my colleagues commenting in a surprised tone “it just tastes like normal chocolate cake. I could get into this health food thing”.

Let’s not kid ourselves, cake is still cake but at least homemade is a better form of rebellion. The flapjacks were a crumbling, mouth-watering mess, heavy on the honey making them the ideal afternoon pick-me-up.

So go on, awaken your taste buds and your spiritual side.

A STUNNING return of seven wickets for 20 runs from paceman Tom Curran helped Surrey defeat Gloucestershire at the Kia Oval this week.

The 20-year-old ran through the visitors order to help skittle them out for a first innings total of just 113, well short of Surrey’s first innings return of 448.

It also allowed Surrey skipper Gareth Batty to enforce the follow on, something he took advantage of, and the visitors fared little better second time around making just 155 as the Kennington side picked up

more crucial County Championship points.

The final victory margin was a comprehensive one of an innings and 180 runs.

The result leaves the Kennington squad in second spot in the second division with Surrey, Lancashire and Glamorgan looking set to duke it out for the two promotion places this season.

When Surrey batted Ben Foakes, with 118, and Dean Elgar, 98, did much of the scoring as Surrey put the West Country attack to the sword.

Surrey finally picked up another T20 win in the last week and once again it was largely down to Jason Roy, who perhaps has not been at his best when on England duty in recent weeks.

But back in the familiar colours of his county the opener once again was

the mainstay of the Surrey batting line up, scoring 61 off 47 balls in his side’s total of 146.

The Surrey attack did enough to defend this against Glamorgan in their own back yard, thanks largely to veteran all-rounder Azhar Mahmood who picked up three wickets for fourteen runs in his four overs.

The win lifted Surrey off the bottom of the south qualification group and they will hope it is a sign of better things to come in the tournament, as the win was only their second in eight outings.

The Kia Oval side were back in T20 action last night, on home turf, where they took on Gloucestershire once again.

A TENSE and tough south London American Football derby was won by the Peckham based Renegades at the weekend, an historic win for the Southwark club.

In the first ever meeting between the sides the Renegades overcame a side used to winning, leading to the Warriors being crowned British Champions three times.

Throughout the first half on Sunday defence was the name of the game as both teams struggled to

move the ball.

This game was no place for the faint hearted as the two teams went head to head in a battle to impose their will on the other side.

Renegades man of the match Ade Labisi led the way with his relentless power running at the Warriors defensive line.

His relentless hammering paid off when the Warriors were forced to stack the middle of the line to stop him, leaving the outside exposed for tailback Andy Owusu to run in a 30 yard sweep for the game’s first touchdown.

The Renegades defence held firm as the Warriors struggled to get back in the game, every Renegade player was determined to stop the Warriors gaining even an inch.

Renegades cornerback Khalid Shittu had the game of his career and defensive tackle Victor Ikpehai made several key tackles in the Warriors backfield in the third quarter.

The Renegades offense struck again in the fourth quarter with Tigie Sankoh torching the Warriors defence on a reverse play.

The Warriors fought back scoring on a quick slant play which split the Renegades defence wide open. With time running out and the score 12 - 6 the Warriors secured a key first down on the Renegades four yard line, after a pass interference call against the Renegades.

Collapse leads to Dulwich loss

A LATE order collapse saw Dulwich squander a strong position to lose by 57 runs in their Ryman Surrey Championship Division Two match at home to Purley.

The visitors managed to accumulate 238 before being bowled out in the 55 over, despite an early setback when Naeem Iqbal dismissed both openers to reduce Purley to 28-2.

Dulwich were left with just 45 overs to get the runs needed for victory. Nick Hudson got them off to a flying start with 35 off 31 balls before becoming the second wicket to fall but Dulwich were dismissed for 182 off the first ball of the 44 over.

Their last five wickets went down for ten runs, with four of them falling to off spinner Razi Khan who finished with 6-52.

Dulwich took just five points from this match and therefore slip one place to eighth in the table.

Young keeper ready for battle with experienced colleague EXCLUSIVE

AT 22 YEARS of age, Jordan Archer felt it was time to leave Spurs permanently after five years at White Hart Lane.

He had seen Harry Kane, Andros Townsend and Ryan Mason all benefit from gaining time in the starting eleven at Millwall and from what he had heard from them it seemed like the ideal place to continue his football development, or at least progress it at a club

where he had a better chance of getting regular first-team football.

With Hugo Lloris and Michael Vorm firmly established as the goalkeeping hierarchy in north London, Archer, though he expresses absolute confidence in his ability, recognised the stark reality of trying to force his way past two internationals.

He had made it as far as the bench at Spurs but never further and though the curve turned upward in terms of the leagues he played in at Bishop's Stortford, Wycombe, Northampton and Millwall, there are only so many times a player can go out on loan from a parent club before the umbilical cord has to be cut for good.

Not that it’s a foregone conclusion that he’ll claim the number one jersey at The Den: over 300 senior first-team appearances and 23 international caps, not to mention a thirteen-year age difference, surely gives David Forde the edge over his challenger.

Forde is still away on a break after his season extended into the summer with Ireland and their Euro 2016 qualifier and his future is still the subject of speculation.

But Archer isn’t letting that be a

distraction as he focuses on what he needs to do to put himself in the frame for a place between the sticks away at Shrewsbury Town on August 8.

“David Forde is a top, top keeper and he has been for a long time now,” Archer said. “But I’ve got to start playing. I believe in my ability and hopefully come the first game of the season I’ll be starting.

“But it’s not going to be easy because David’s still a great keeper. It’s not going to be easy to dislodge him but that’s what I’ve come here for, to play games.”

For most players it might be considered a wrench leaving a Premier League club to drop down two divisions and stake your chances of starting on winning a battle with an experienced international, and though Archer enjoyed his time at Spurs where he lived not far from Kane and Townsend and was close with the pair he had to be realistic about his prospects.

He said: “I was there since I was fifteen so that’s seven years. Obviously in football people come and go but there were a few who were with me from the start, like Harry Kane, players

like that who’ve been here as well.

“Obviously I was here from the end of January last season so I’m familiar with most of the staff and players, apart from the new additions.

“I’m settling down. They are a great bunch of lads, great staff and coaches and it’s made it easy for me.

“As a goalkeeper it’s slightly slower [progress] but I’m looking to push on with my career now.

“It’s tough because obviously there’s only one position. During training we’re all friends but at the end of the day we all want to play so it is competitive for that starting jersey. It’s part and parcel of the job really.”

Away from the football pitch Archer is a bit of a sports nut - Kevin Pietersen and LeBron James are two of his favourite sportspeople outside football and he’ll have his feet up tonight watching England’s women, with former Millwall Lionesses Katie Chapman and Claire Rafferty in their squad, battling Japan for a place in the World Cup final.

“I can’t say I followed it prior to the World Cup but they’ve been doing so well,” he said. “It’s captured the attention of the nation better than what

the men’s team have done so it’s great to see them do so well. Hopefully they can make it all the way.”

There are certainly similarities between England’s young coach Mark Sampson and Neil Harris, only two years after his retirement from playing and now dealing with unusually hefty expectations for a club that was relegated last season.

Archer believes the Lions have the right man in place to take them forward, continuing with next week’s trip to Portugal as the year’s first pre-season warm-up draws closer.

“I’m looking forward to it. The weather’s going to be hot, even though it’s picking up here at the minute. We’re going over to work hard, add to the fitness, get some ball-work done and as soon as we come back there are the friendlies to fine-tune the fitness.”

“When the boss came in for the last ten or eleven games of the season he showed great confidence in us. He gave us great belief so going into this season we’ve got the players and infrastructure - it’s a big club - to really push for promotion. That’s our target as a group and with the group of players we have here we’re more than capable.”

Defender’s move excited former Hammer EXCLUSIVE

NEW MILLWALL left-back Joe Martin says his dad Alvin was “delighted” when he heard that the Lions were interested in signing him.

Martin senior played over 600 times for London rivals West Ham United but left the final decision over whether to join Millwall with his son.

“He was delighted, yeah,” Martin said. “When he heard that there was a chance of coming here he was really happy. He knows what a big club it is.

“I think as I’ve got older I kind of just make my own decisions. I might ask him what he thinks but he stands back a bit, he doesn’t get involved as much as he used to. Obviously I’ve played quite a few games now and can make my own decisions but he is there for advice when I need it.”

Alvin personally witnessed an often spiteful - and worse - rivalry between the clubs, being involved for the Hammers against the Lions in three separate decades, including the only

two top-tier meetings between the sides in 1988-89.

Twenty-six-year-old Joe has never played at The Den but is well aware of the reputation it has and of the noise its fans are capable of generating.

“I think I played against them when I was at Blackpool when I was nineteen,” he said.

“So I’m looking forward to sampling the atmosphere at home. I think everyone knows all about the Millwall fans, what they’re about. They’re well known around for their passion. I’m looking forward to seeing it, hopefully winning a few games as well and getting the season rolling.”

In preparation for that the former Gillingham defender has been getting used to the early starts, travelling to the training ground every morning from Essex to be ready to start work at 8am.

He knows John Marquis and Andy Frampton from his time at Gillingham and says that has aided the bedding-in process.

“It always helps when you’ve got a few people that you know already.

AFTER USING the club’s new GPS performance-monitoring technology this week, Millwall physio Bobby Bacic says the squad will be relying on some old-fashioned methods with temperatures set to soar.

MILLWALL COACH David Connolly’s father Tom, who moved to London from Ireland in the 1960s, spoke to Sky Sports this week about his son and said:

“We’ll have the Factor 50 out this week and it’ll obviously be important to rehydrate properly,” he said. “It’s the same advice as you’d give the general public in this heat.”

The squad have been avoiding the worst of it by doing the more intensive fitness work early in the morning and Bacic also said there will be indoor training this week with the mercury set to rise to 36°C.

“At thirteen he was club captain at Watford and Kenny Jacket was involved. When he was sixteen, there were eighteen of them offered a development contract.

From that eighteen, I think he was the only one to go and make a career out of it.

“David was only small, but if there is one thing that went from father to son then it’s that he always gave 100 per cent.”

The Lions will play Sheffield United at 12.15pm on Saturday, October 24 instead of 3pm.

There is also a change to the Christmas schedule with the game at Southend kicking off on Monday, December 28 at 1pm rather than 3pm.

Shrewsbury Town, meanwhile, have confirmed that the first league game of the season on Saturday, August 8 will be an all-ticket affair.

of testing. We’ve had a good few mornings running so I’ve settled in well with the boys. They’re a good bunch of lads from what I can see.

The squad have been using a new performance-monitoring system the club imported from Australia and Martin says it’s a reminder of the size of the club he’s just joined.

“Basically there’s no hiding place nowadays! It’s a little bit different here, a really great set-up, it’s a big club.

“We have GPS and heart-rate monitors and it tracks the distance you’re covering, your heart-rate and how hard you’re working in each session. So the medical and fitness staff can take a gauge of whether you need to do more or less.

“Personally I forget it’s there. It’s just about working as hard as you can in the session and then you don’t have to think about it.

“At the minute we’re doing sets of 1,000- and 800-metre runs. We do that first thing in the morning before training again at 10.30am and then there’s gym work in the afternoon.

They’re fairly intensive days.

“But it’s good, we need to get that base over the next few weeks and it’ll stand us in good stead.”

HARRIS PLEASED AFTER FIRST WEEK

Boss says preparations are ahead of schedule

WITH THE first week of preseason training almost complete Millwall boss Neil Harris says the squad are in “great condition”.

After spending the first two days last week assessing the players’ physical levels Harris and his management team have been overseeing football drills this week with a heavy emphasis on possession.

The players have had early starts all week, arriving at the training ground before 8am and working through the morning, before finishing with gym sessions in the afternoon.

Temperatures have also risen as the week has gone on, but Harris believes

the care his players took with their fitness after the end of last season has given them a headstart.

“The boys are in great condition so we’ve really been able to step up the football work quite quickly,” he said.

“They minded themselves in the offseason really well, which shows they all want to be at their best all the time.

“We’ve got a real good bunch of pros. We’re a few days ahead of schedule. We came back early anyway, so we’re happy with where we are.”

Harris also confirmed midfielder Shaun Williams had been able to participate in the football sessions this week.

“Shaun’s done really well,” he added.

“He’s ahead of schedule. He’s where we hoped he would be and the hope is

he continues to tick along.

“We have to be mindful that he had a really nasty injury so we have to be cautious. But he’s a naturally fit boy anyway as well.

Meanwhile Harris says that despite having achieved the aim of reducing the average age of the squad, he would consider bringing in a player in his 30s if he was the right fit.

He said: “When we’re talking about one player in a specific position it’s irrelevant for me how old the player is.

We’re doing our homework on all aspects of players, from fitness to mindset and all the rest of it.

“We want to bring in the right character and whether he’s eighteen years old or 33 that’s not important to me.”

POSSESSION WITH A PURPOSE IS HARRIS’ MANTRA

NEIL HARRIS hopes the work carried out on the training ground this week will be reflected in how his side plays next season.

The Lions boss has consistently outlined his vision of the game all summer and this week offered the first opportunity to start imprinting that vision on his squad.

He has again been emphasising his belief in passing football and pressing quickly and sharply to regain possession.

He was therefore determined to begin ball-work as soon as possible this pre-season.

“At the moment it’s general football conditioning,” he said. “It’s hard work, but with the football. We do a lot of possession drills where the ball changes between players quite a lot.

“It means when you’re in possession you’re working hard with the ball with a clear purpose in mind, but when you lose the ball you know how to win it back quickly.

“We want to play high-tempo football, that’s the style I like.”

Coach Andy Frampton has also been on the training pitch this week for the first time following his return to the club and Harris believes he will prove the ideal sounding board for his young squad.

“Framps has come in and he’s got a wealth of experience,” Harris said.

“He’s a good guy and a really good leader so if the boys want any thoughts on playing for the club, any honest advice or one-onone coaching then Framps is a great person for them to go and ask and learn from.”
