Election day - its now down to you!

T

ODAY WE get to decide who our MP is and hopefully now that the hype of the last few weeks is over a government will be formed.

Not since the 1970s have we been so unsure of an outright winner in a general election.

The race is as tight as it gets and so it is vital that everyone has their say in who they want to represent them in Parliament.

Given that for many people politics isn’t of major interest week in week out, suddenly to be bombarded with political debate, endless claims and counter-claims, slogans and promises, and leaflets in your letterbox or canvassers on your doorstep, no wonder perhaps that election day gets greeted with a collective sigh of relief.

But as voters take to the polling stations the pundits are suggesting that we could have another few days to wait as the parties try and form another coalition or worse still a minority government is formed and another election awaits us in the not too distant future.

Yet having said that, because many people get turned off by some aspects of politics, it doesn’t mean that they don’t care about the vital services that politics oversees. While the TV debates focused around what deals could be struck in ‘dark rooms’between the main parties and some of the now well-known smaller ones, there is little doubt that the debates themselves did drum up interest in a variety of issues.

It is to be hoped that there is a high turnout at this election. As we always argue, you can’t really complain about your children’s schools, the homes you live in, the transport you use or the health service you receive if you haven’t bothered to go out and vote. And whilst some constituencies enjoy such majorities that people feel their vote doesn’t make a difference, just about anything is possible in an election. Your vote does count, and not bothering to take part in the political process really just amounts to laziness.

Couple first to take part in new scheme

A GREEN-fingered couple are ‘literally and figuratively putting down roots’ in Bermondsey after proposing to each other beneath a tree they adopted in Southwark Park.

Emily Collins and Gemma Ellis got engaged last week as they became the first people to take part in the council’s upcoming ‘Adopt a Tree’ scheme, which sees participants plant and care for a tree.

Emily said: “I’ve been thinking about proposing for a long time, but then realised that everything we do, we do together. So I talked to her about it and we planned a special joint engagement.

“Gemma had the idea and I helped sort it out. That’s a nice example of our relationship: Gemma comes up with ideas and I make them happen!”

The pair contacted the council, who allowed them to take part in the scheme before its official launch later this year due to the special romantic circumstances.

They planted the tree and then returned soon after to propose to each other. They celebrated with a champagne picnic in glorious sunshine.

Emily said: “We’re both

environmentally-minded and adore the park - it’s been a big part of our life since we moved nearby. The park is just around the corner from our house and we think it is beautiful. It’s a great place to go for a walk, or have a picnic.”

While the pair moved from Oxfordshire last year, Emily’s father

came from Bermondsey, and she hopes the tree will be a big part of the next chapter in her family’s life in the area.

She said: “The tree is going to grow as our relationship does. I love the idea of having kids one day and bringing them to water it and see it, The loving couple, Emily and Gemma with their tree; and (left) planting it and to watch it grow together.”

After returning home with her husband David Whelan last week, Martha said she has been hit by “the realisation of what we went through and how close we came to being crushed.”

She was just getting out of the bath in her fourth floor hotel room in the heart of Khatmandu when the 7.9magnitude earthquake hit.

“I tried to stand up, but I stumbled,” she said. “I grabbed a

towel and once I found it was too unstable to stand up I crouched down to dry myself.

As she heard the wardrobe crashing into the television in the bedroom next door, Martha said three things went through her mind very rapidly – “I need to get dry, I need to get dressed and I need to get out of this building,” she said.

As she was getting dressed, husband David, who had been evacuated from the lobby, ran back in and up the four flights of stairs to get to their room against all advice

not to return to the building.

After he had found Martha, they both ran out of the hotel together and stayed on a nearby grassy area, one of the only spaces in the city not surrounded by buildings.

“My legs were too shaky to stand up so I sat down on the grass and we stayed there for hours,” said Martha.

The couple went to the airport to see if they could get their flight at the scheduled time but Martha said it was “pandemonium” as thousands of people clamoured to escape the devastated city.

“I saw a couple of different fights break out. Tempers were very short,” she said.

“One of the scariest things was when there was another tremor inside the airport and I turned and saw a thousand people running towards me. You have to be alert to the crowd in a situation like that,” she added.

After being told that their scheduled flight would not leave until the next day, Martha and David returned to the hotel to find everyone sleeping in the lobby.

“Then there was another big aftershock and everyone jumped up and ran outside,” she said. With many people choosing to remain outside for the rest of the night, Martha and David bedded down in the entrance hall but had to run outside another two times during the night as further aftershocks hit.

The hotel staff, who stayed on site the whole time, sharing their food with the guests when the hotel had run out, sang traditional folk songs through the night.

Driving back to the airport the day after the first earthquake, Martha saw Nepalese people crowded onto every open space they could find, even seeking safety in the middle of the road.

“One memory that will never leave me is of a Nepalese family with two children and a baby who had pulled their sofa and a couple of chairs in to the middle of the road and were just sitting there,” she said.

After having visited places like the ancient city of Bhaktapur just days before it was largely flattened, Martha said: “I really do feel lucky to be alive. I’m humbled by it - that my experience was so painless compared to what so many people did go through and are going through. If it had happened on any of the previous thirteen days we had been in the country, I think we might not have gotten out,” she said.

With the death toll now higher than 7,500, Martha is appealing to News readers to give now to the Disasters Emergency Committee appeal. “The Nepalese people are gentle and hardworking and many of them have lost everything. To rebuild from scratch requires enormous help form all of us,” she said.

recently been the focus of a dispute between Southwark Council and the Save Southwark Woods campaign group, who are opposing plans to use the cordoned off woodland plot to create 1,000 new grave spaces.

This week the council has confirmed to the News that when it was taking soil samples from the site a “small incendiary device” was discovered there in September 2011.

The bomb was safely removed by the Ministry of Defence at the time but David Kurten, UKIP

parliamentary candidate for Camberwell and Peckhamm, is now calling for the site to be closely examined before the contaminated waste is removed in case other bombs are lying hidden.

“I want the council to make a thorough investigation of the site to make sure there are not any other bombs there because that could be a danger to human life,” said David.

“I’d rather it remain woodland for us to enjoy,” he added, “but we need to make sure it’s bomb free for human safety.”

A spokesperson for Southwark Council said: “There is a chance, as there is in many parts of London, that further devices will be uncovered, which is why we have factored this into our plans to clear the site and all normal precautions will be taken once we start work so we are not expecting any further significant delays.”

Although a scan of the site in 2011 showed up numerous metal objects on the site it will be impossible to tell if any of these are incendiary devices until the clearance work

begins.

An unexploded World War Two bomb in Bermondsey led to a mass evacuation of the surrounding area in March and a smaller undetonated device was also discovered and disposed of in Rotherhithe last month.

Save Southwark Woods will be making their case to the council at a meeting of the full assembly on July 8 and has also applied to register Area Z as an asset of community value to try and protect it from redevelopment.

Jack Wells, 22, wants to take little Scarlett on a holiday to Florida before he loses his battle with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone disease.

He went to the doctor in March when his mother noticed a lump on his shoulder.

He was sent to a specialist who diagnosed him and told him it was inoperable. He has since begun chemotherapy, but this will only temporarily slow down the cancer, which has already spread to his arm and pelvis.

“It’s something you don’t expect,” he told the News. “I had no idea.

Once they told me I had cancer, I wanted to know how long I had left. The doctors just stared at me when I asked - I think most people don’t really want to think about that.”

He said that while he was hesitant to ask for money for himself, he wanted to give his daughter the best life possible while he was still with her.

He said: “She doesn’t understand what is happening, but while I’m still here I want to support her and make her happy. It would be amazing to take her to Florida for a dream holiday, to give her one last great memory.”

Police launch urgent appeal in Ola Raji murder

THE POLICE have launched an urgent appeal to speak to the occupants of a BMW spotted at the murder scene of 21-year-old Ola Raji two weeks ago.

The black 2011 vehicle was parked in East Surrey Grove opposite the Damilola Taylor Centre either during or immediately following the fatal stabbing and shooting of the former Sacred Heart pupil dead in the street around the corner from his old youth club on April 21.

It is believed that there were at least two people inside the car who were joined by a woman for around twenty minutes while she spoke to the driver.

The woman then got out and ran towards the scene of the shooting while the BMW stayed put. The driver then did a u-turn in East Surrey Grove and drove off towards Commercial Way with its lights off.

Police are keen to speak to the occupants of the car, its registered keeper and the woman who approached it.

Detectives believe that on the night of the murder, Ola made his way onto the estate riding a push-bike when he was confronted by two people who shot and stabbed him at around 10.30pm.

When police officers arrived they found Ola in a critical condition and he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at a central London hospital that night.

A post-mortem examination took place at Greenwich Mortuary on Thursday when the cause of death was found to be a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Detective Chief Inspector Will Reynolds, from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command, said: "I would like to be very clear that the keeper and occupants of this vehicle are not suspects.

"We previously appealed to find the driver of a car travelling down Rosemary Road at around 10.30 on April 21. That driver has since come forward and been spoken to purely as a potential witness,” he added.

A 21-year-old and 24-year-old arrested in connection with the murder were bailed to return in early June pending further enquiries.

Okafor was arrested in September last year in Warri, Delta State by the Nigerian police and extradited back to the UK in November, where he was arrested and charged with Carl's murder.

He was found guilty of murder on April 30 and sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday. He will serve a minimum of seventeen years before parole.

Detective Inspector Alison Hepworth said: " In the five years he [Okafor] was on the run he was living a life that Carl should have been living.

"Carl's death has had a profound effect on his family and they have waited a very long time to see justice served.

A DULWICH man has been jailed for life for the murder of a children’s television star.

Jeffrey Okafor fled the country after stabbing nineteen-year-old Carl Beatson-Asiedu in a fight in Vauxhall in 2009.

A five year international manhunt traced Okafor to Nigeria, where a £10,000 bounty was put out on his head.

The jury at Woolwich Crown Court heard how in the early hours of Saturday, August 1 that year Carl, who appeared in CBBC series, M.I. High, died in the street after being stabbed in the heart.

Also known as DJ Charmz, Carl had just played a set at the Club Life nightclub in Goding Street, Kennington and was walking to his car with a group of friends.

A group of men approached them, who Carl and his friends had had some trouble with in the past.

A fight broke out and Carl was separated from his friends and fatally stabbed by Jeffrey Okafor.

Carl collapsed in the street and was found lying in the road by other friends who were driving past. They placed him in their car and drove in the direction of the hospital.

On route, the police stopped the car in Bayliss Road and saw the injured university student in the back. They gave him first aid and the London Air Ambulance also treated him, but he was pronounced dead before he ever reached the hospital.

A post-mortem held at Greenwich mortuary that same day gave the cause of death as a single stab wound to the heart.

The police tracked down Okafor’s girlfriend who handed them a pair of black gloves and a T-shirt he had asked her to get rid of after he confessed to her within an hour of the killing. He told her "there had been a madness" and later said he had stabbed ‘Charmz’ in the stomach.

Landcroft Road in Dulwich in the early hours of August 13, 2009, he legged it out of a back window and into a neighbour’s garden where he waited until the officers had left.

The 24-year-old then went to the bank and withdrew all his money before heading to Barking where he checked into a hotel for three days. On August

17 he was caught on CCTV with his brother Junior at Heathrow Airport.

They swapped clothes before Okafor got on a flight to Lagos, Nigeria, using his brother’s passport.

AS ELECTION Day neared, candidates in the borough’s closest election battle called in some famous faces for their final campaigning push.

Labour candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle was supported by comedians Jo Brand and Steve Coogan, with the duo campaigning alongside Coyle in Surrey Quays and Canada Water respectively.

No queues at the polls?

THE COUNCIL has drafted in extra staff for the borough’s polling stations this year, after some voters were left queuing round the block last time.

A close second, ‘cuts to services’ were a priority to 21 percent with Immigration trailing on eleven percent.

‘Cost of living’ was the most important issue for nine percent of our survey’s respondents and seven percent said

‘crime’ and three percent said ‘jobs’.

Fifteen percent of respondents said that secondary school places were also high on their priority list as Southwark is expected to face a shortage of available places in the next ten years.

Education, health, social services and tackling anti-social behaviour were also mentioned.

At the 2010 general election there were reports of confusion and long delays at some polling stations in Southwark after the turnout was much higher than expected possibly because the local elections were on the same day.

Voters waited for up to an hour in some places with Dulwich Village polling station described as having ‘queues out the door’ and Charles Dickens Primary ‘chaotic with long queues’.

This year Southwark Council’s returning officer, Deborah Collins, has told the News it is ready for a “high voter turnout.”

“We are preparing for a high voter turnout across the borough on May 7,”she said, “and are staffing our polling stations accordingly, particularly in areas where turnout has been high historically.

“In 2010 queues were a problem for the whole country and, although we managed in this borough much better than in many

places, we’ve learned from that experience. “We have extra technology and staff to try to speed up queries on registration that come up at polling stations, and we have standby staff who can get swiftly to polling stations to help out if queues do build up.

“But it always gets very busy in the last hour of polling, so I would encourage voters to try and visit their polling station earlier if they can on election day,” she added.

Although voting closes at 10pm, the law has recently changed to allow people in the queue at that time to place their vote.

Last election, Dulwich and West Norwood had the highest turnout with 66.2 percent, up 9.3 percent on 58.1 percent in 2005. Camberwell and Peckham came in second with a turnout of 59.3 percent, up 7.3 percent on 52 percent in 2005 with Bermondsey and Old Southwark on 57.5 percent, up 8.8 percent from 48.2 percent in 2005.

Fire crews cut roof from vehicle

TWO PEOPLE were trapped in a car after a crash on Sunday morning and had to be set free by firemen cutting the roof off the vehicle.

The fire brigade were called to Camberwell Road just after 10am after two cars were involved in a collision, and found a man and a woman trapped in one of the damaged vehicles.

The police cordoned off the road, causing traffic tailbacks through Camberwell and up to Walworth, while the fire brigade released the pair. They were both taken to a south London hospital by the London Ambulance Service, with injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

Road closures remained in place for most of the day while the police investigated the circumstances of the collision. No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

Cross party support to re-open Maudsley’s emergency clinic Southwark News, Thursday May 7, 2015

PROTESTORS GATHERED outside the Maudsley Hospital on Saturday to demand that the emergency clinic for people in mental health crisis be reopened.

There was huge public opposition to the closure of the Maudsley emergency clinic in 2007 because of a fear that the local A&E services would be overwhelmed and people in mental health crisis would have nowhere suitable to go.

A report reviewed by Southwark Council last year expressed concern that King’s Hospital had seen a 75 percent increase in the number of patients requiring mental health assessments since 2009 with 3,780 in the year 2013-2014.

After some significant delays, King’s told the News last year that it is now in the process of building a mental health assessment suite which will provide a separate space for mental health patients, but campaigners and crossparty politicians are calling for the specialist clinic to be reopened instead.

and said the emergency clinic had saved her life.

“It was either go to the off licence or come here. If that hadn’t been available it probably would have been the off licence and I probably wouldn’t be here. It saved my life twice and I’m just one of many,” said the mother-of-one who has now been sober for nineteen years.

Tom White of the Southwark Pensioner’s Action Group, who has been leading the campaign to reopen the clinic since it was closed, said: “I defy anybody to go into King’s A&E and tell me that that is the right and proper place for someone in a mental health crisis. This is the right place for them, because they are the world’s experts here.”

A spokesperson from the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust (SLaM) said: “While we recognise that a busy A&E is not always the best environment for people in mental distress it is important to remember that many people attend A&E when they experience a mental crisis for the first time.

DESPERATE JANET IS OFFERING HER PENSION TO GET HER STOLEN JEWELS BACK A DEVASTATED Rotherhithe widow is offering a fortnight’s worth of her pension as a reward for anyone who can help find her stolen jewellery, including her wedding and engagement ring.

Janet Gentleman, 81, is desperate to get the priceless jewellery back and will pay £500 to anyone who can return it.

As reported by the News last week, the great-grandmother was left ‘embarrassed and let down’ when conmen tricked their way into her Brydale House home by saying they were there to fix a leak problem.

The crooks distracted her and stole the rings given to her by her late husband Tom, as well as a 100-yearold ring that belonged to her late mother and some watches and necklaces.

She said: “I don’t get much from the pension, and after paying for rent and food and bills, there’s not a lot left over.

But those rings were incredibly sentimental to me. It’s bad enough being robbed but they meant so much.

Stars of the show

YOUNG DANCERS from Cullen Whelan Irish Dance School in Dulwich brought home a haul of medals after taking part in a competition in Luton last month.

Ella Lane (top) was the star of the show as she won the coveted U17s open category at the Conway Lally tournament after only fourteen months of competing. This is the first time a dancer at the school has won an open championship.

Amelia Pease (bottom) also did well and won the U11 preliminary category, while some of the younger girls also collected silverware, including Lexiemae who received four medals from four dances.

RUSH-HOUR COMMUTERS avoided disaster last week when a car careened onto a busy pavement outside Southwark tube station.

Two cars were involved in the accident at around 7pm on April 30, which luckily involved only minor injuries for one of the drivers.

Both cars were badly damaged in the incident at the junction of Blackfriars Road and The Cut. Blackfriars Road was closed to northbound traffic, although re-opened around an hour later.

A police spokesperson said: “It wasn’t too serious in terms of injuries. One driver received minor injuries and no arrests have been made.”

In Southwark, the Soviet War Memorial has provided the site for an annual remembrance of the 27 million citizens of the Soviet Union, military and civilian who lost their lives in the war.

ROBERT KASANGAwas about to take his first step out of gang life and into a football career as he prepared to go on the pitch to play for Ashford Town’s first team. Then his phone rang and he was told his friend and fellow Peckham Boys gang member had been stabbed and lay fighting for his life in hospital.

The next week would see an innocent schoolboy gunned down in his bed and Robert arrested for his murder as his life spiralled out of control.

At the height of a gang-led crime spree in Peckham in 2007, fifteen-year-old Michael Dosunmu was murdered in a tragic case of mistaken identity.

After carrying out a spate of security van robberies, the Peckham Boys had started turning on each other as they scrambled to get their fair share of the proceeds. Twenty-one-year-old Javarie Crighton was stabbed to death in a row over the money on February 3 2007 and days later two ‘soldiers’ went to take their revenge. As Orando Madden had already confessed to the Crighton murder, they targeted his friend, Hakeem Dosunmu.

bedroom and his younger brother, who was not involved in gang life in any way, was shot several times with a Mac-10 sub-machine gun while he slept.

The next day aspiring footballer Robert, who was 20-years-old at the time, got a call which turned his world upside down – saying someone had named him as the prime suspect. Robert had been involved in the robberies and was good friends with Crighton so he had motive enough and before long he was arrested and taken into Walworth police station for questioning.

“When I found out Javarie had been murdered.... I broke down in tears and all the lads from the first team were consoling me in the dressing room.

“I thought to myself this is a dangerous situation and then a couple of days later Michael got killed and I was arrested -

everything was spiralling.”

With his involvement in the robberies hanging over him, Robert was in deep trouble but he had a strong alibi and was ultimately cleared of being involved in the murder.

A month later he did another cash in transit robbery which led to his first stint in prison.

Robert spent nearly eight years inside in the end for different robberies but says he put his time to good use, writing a fictionalised account of his gang life, getting a degree and warning other inmates against being in a gang.

“While I was in prison I met so many talented kids – just wasted. When you’re good at something stick to it otherwise in the end you’re going to end up dead or in prison,” said Robert, now 28years-old.

“I should’ve been a footballer so of course I regret it. I wasted my life but at least now I’m trying to make the most of my situation.”

Robert says there weren’t many choices growing up in Peckham where young people turned to a life of gang crime in their droves.

He said: “In that sort of area, everyone wants a name. If you haven’t got a name you’re a nobody. My brother had a name so I followed in his footsteps. I used to look up to him and I wanted to be in with the cool kids.

“I say in the book – all the time I was thinking ‘you should be doing something good’ – but the lure of money and the fast life was too strong.”

THE PECKHAM BOYS’ ROBBERIES

IN JANUARY and February 2007, a group of the Peckham Boys were involved in a number of armed robberies of security guards delivering or collecting money from banks, building societies and supermarkets across south London.

The unsophisticated heists took little planning and netted the group between £1,000 - £25,000 a pop.

The gang would keep watch on a particular bank or building society and one of them would then rob the security guards while waving a gun at them.

The haul from the last robbery they did together was £18,000. Some of the gang became suspicious when Orando Madden claimed one of the boxes was empty.

Javarie Crighton and Mohammed Sannoh went to confront him and demand their share but the argument got out of control and Madden stabbed Crighton to death before running away - only to hand himself in to police a few days later. He was found guilty of murder and sentenced to a minimum term of fourteen years.

In June 2008 Mohammed Sannoh and Abdi Omar Noor were both found guilty for the murder of Michael Dosunmu and sentenced to a minimum of 30 years.

A NINE-YEAR-OLD leukaemia patient ‘couldn’t stop smiling’ at a benefit night raising funds for a dream trip to Disneyland in Peckham last month.

Brave Lewis Brooke was diagnosed with blood cancer a year ago and has been receiving intensive chemotherapy, morphine and tablets ever since. He is rarely well enough to attend school and is too sick to play football with his friends.

At the special event at the White Horse pub in Peckham Rye, however, Lewis was all smiles, with around 70 people coming together to try to make Lewis’s dream a reality.

“It was a really good night,” said his mum Debbie. “We raised £3000 and there is still a bit of money to come in from some of the items we auctioned off – we’ll hopefully get up closer to £4000.

A highlight for many – although presumably not for one person in particular – saw Lewis’s dad Tom brave a sponsored chest wax. For £5, people could rip a strip of hair off the brave dad, with Lewis saving up his pocket money for the first go.

Lewis was also celebrating becoming a big brother, with little Bobby born just five days before the benefit night.

“Lewis is so excited,” said Debbie. “He checks on him all the time and he’s the only one allowed to push him in his push chair! He’s an amazing big brother already.”

Debbie was ‘amazed’ at the generosity of the people who attended, with the funds going some way towards the incredibly expensive cost of travel insurance for sick children.

A signed Chelsea FC shirt received a bid of £500, while professional boxer Johnny Garton turned up with a signed glove.

Local businesses, including Canavan’s Peckham Pool Club, turned up with their

own fundraising collections.

“We are so grateful,” said Debbie.

“We’d like to thank everyone who came along and donated, and especially Michael, the landlord of the White Horse, and our friend Grant Campbell, who organised the whole event.

“Also can I thank Jacqueline Wheatley, Karen Scott, Sugar Mountain in Forest Hill, Pizza Hut, Odeon, Tesco, Marks & Spencer and Millwall Football Club for their help, raffle prizes and donations.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ shortlisted for quality of care award GUY’S AND St Thomas’ has been shortlisted for a CHKS Top Hospitals Quality of Care Award.

The award recognises excellence in providing high quality patient care.

Donation saves service for domestic violence victims Award success for pressure ulcer nurse THE EMERGENCY Department (A&E) at St Thomas’ Hospital will be able to maintain a unique service that offers

help and support to victims of domestic violence – thanks to a generous charity donation.

The Reach service provides a multi-lingual advisor who speaks to patients attending the Emergency Department who have been affected by domestic violence. The advisor liaises with police and housing services to try and help their situation.

The Better Community Business Network (BCBN) has donated £18,059 to continue funding the service, which supports men, women and children in vulnerable situations.

Dr Nicola Drake, a consultant in the Emergency Department at St Thomas’, says: “Having staff trained to recognise domestic violence makes the entire department feel more able to broach the subject and to do something to help. The Reach service is reducing both the risk of recurrent harm to our patients and the number of attendances to the Emergency Department.”

BCBN was founded four years ago by the directors of Henley Homes and a network of professionals across several sectors who have come together to support local community projects.

Tariq Usmani, Chairman of BCBN, says: “BCBN is proud to partner with Reach and to support its life-changing work in providing assistance to disadvantaged people in vulnerable relationships and social support to families in crisis, helping to rebuild their lives.”

A BRAND new office for the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) has opened at the main entrance to St Thomas’ Hospital.

Prominently positioned close to the hospital’s main reception desk, the PALS office is easily identifiable and contains a private room so that patients can talk to members of the PALS team.

The team gives patients and carers information about healthcare services and the choices available to them at Guy’s and St Thomas’. It also receives comments, compliments or concerns about patients’ experiences.

The PALS team has offices at both Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals, which are open from 9am-5pm, Monday to Friday.

A NURSE has been commended for helping to heal severe wounds in local people faster by using a new treatment method.

Luxmi Mohamud, a Guy's and St Thomas' tissue viability nurse based at Dulwich Community Hospital, won the Journal of Wound Care’s award for best clinical research.

Luxmi uses an oxygen-based spray to increase the amount of oxygen that gets to wounds, helping them to heal quicker.

Pressure ulcers can affect people who sit down for long periods or who are unable to get out of bed. They may start to see redness and skin blistering over bony parts of the body.

Luxmi says: "Our team treats about 240 patients a month and I've seen some fantastic results from the oxygen spray. It can speed up healing when other methods haven’t worked.

"I've had patients who are now able to wear clothing such as shorts after years of keeping their legs covered because of their wounds."

The 22nd annual Dulwich Festival is blending traditional cultural heritage with fresh new talent, with the latest Edinburgh Festival improv acts, historical talks and modern music.

Some of the best established and upcoming folk and indie talent will perform in local venues. London indie folk band Joe Innes and the Cavalcade has built up a reputation for lively and energetic live shows.

Comedian Milo McCabe previews his Edinburgh Fringe show at Dulwich's Bel Air House evening

C

omedian Milo McCabe is flexing his stand-up muscles for Dulwich audiences, warming up for this year’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival at Bel Air House, writes Laura Burgoine...

Bel Air House’s Belairious evening is an exclusive Edinburgh Festival preview with stand-up comedian Milo McCabe joined by comedian Diane Spencer, both performing a 45 minute set.

Two-time Amused Moose Best Show nominee, Milo’s one-man sketch narrative is a combination of gentlemanly wit and eccentric comedy.

“It’s pretty complicated”, Milo told the News. “My wife and I had an argument and normally I’m in the wrong but this time I was 100 percent in the right – she went out for three hours and in the midst of this righteous indignation I sat on my laptop and started writing”, he explains.

“Later I found I had a narrative coming

through this two hours of weirdness. I basically crafted this story out of what I’d written. The show symbolises my subconscious method of resolving conflict”.

Milo has been performing at the Edinburgh Fringe every year since 2011.

“You go for a month and you do your hour long show every day, then three gigs at other places, you get to see some other shows but the big thing is to read reviews”, he says. “I’ve been fortunate to get good reviews but they’re very subjective so this year I’m not reading reviews. I say that every year”.

He describes Edinburgh Fringe as an intense experience. “It’s full on, really odd. It’s over in a flash, and you can’t remember anything before you went. It can be consuming so I get up early, go to the gym, try to eat healthily and if I go out after a show I’ll have three drinks, get a minor buzz, then decide it’s time to go home. That normally kills me by

the end!”

The comedian is performing previews in London, the Midlands and Brighton Comedy Festival and describes the process as invaluable.

“Primarily the previews are for people to have a first run at their material.

"I did previews in Leicester in February but the crowds are so nice in Leicester that get a disproportionate level of acceptance, so you need to try different crowds”.

“Previews are completely helpful; I did 20 last year. It’s always a work in progress”.

Pharmacy first for common illnessess

M

OST OF us experience common illnesses from time to time. Whether it’s a cough, cold, hay fever or indigestion, people often find themselves under the weather for a few days.

Whilst the majority of these illnesses will simply get better on their own, there are a number of treatments that can help us bounce back a little more quickly, and reduce some of the unpleasant symptoms we experience. Most of these treatments are available directly from your local chemist and, if you don’t pay prescription charges, it’s now even easier to get medicines for minor illnesses from pharmacies in Southwark.

Through the new Pharmacy First scheme, you can get a number of treatments for common illnesses free from your local chemist without needing to visit your GP. As well as saving you time, you’ll be able to speak to a pharmacist who is trained to offer advice on minor illnesses and medicines to help you manage any symptoms you are experiencing.

The pharmacist will ask about your symptoms to work out what is wrong and give you advice on what treatment is suitable for you.

Anything you say to them is completely confidential and most pharmacies have a consulting room so you can talk in private.

Everyone can get free advice from any pharmacist and pay for treatments available over the counter, but to use the Pharmacy First scheme you will need to be registered with a GP and entitled to free prescriptions.

You won’t need to wait to see your doctor and you won’t need an appointment to see the pharmacist. Just remember to take along evidence that you don’t usually pay for your prescriptions.

MPs please take cycling more seriously Borough Commander: It’s hardly The Sweeney

HAVING READ the follow-up report in the News last week (‘Police release CCTV after cycle collision ‘left woman scarred for life’) of the poor police investigation into the thug on wheels, who caused dreadful injury to Mrs Andrea McVeigh, I was deeply disappointed by the comments of the borough's police commander.

While Zander Gibson expressed sympathy for Mrs McVeigh and apologised for the delay in investigating the - in my view - serious common assault, he went on to say: “I think that the person responsible for knocking the victim over needs to explain their actions to us".

But what exactly does our local police chief need explained about the ‘actions" of a thug on wheels breaking the law by cycling on the pavement, and injuring an innocent pedestrian who a perfect right to be there?

Does he tell his officers to take the same approach with ‘hit and run’ criminal incidents on the road - just ask the driver to explain their actions. He also said: "..the vast majority of cyclists are decent hardworking people".

Perhaps they are. A great many

pedestrians feel a growing number of cyclists behave very badly.

But why did Commander Gibson feel the need to defend cyclists?

Pedestrianised areas in London are increasingly being invaded by thoughtless inconsiderate people on wheels. It's not just the pavements, but quiet river walks, parks and other areas also.

But is it any wonder? Cyclists know they, almost alone as a group, can break the law with impunity. Neither police nor politicians act.

What's the worst that might happen even if they do cause serious injury to an innocent pedestrian?

The local police commander might invite them in for a wee chat to "explain their actions".

Not exactly The Sweeney then.

on 26th January 2015 or if the minutes for the Tenants Council meeting had been uploaded to the Southwark Council website he would know that I was there.

This was my first Tenants Council meeting as a delegate of East Walworth Area Forum.

He would also have seen that I spoke up against target rents for new council tenants. Tenants Council voted overwhelmingly against the imposition of the new, higher target rents. Our vote was subsequently ignored by Southwark Council.

I am a supporter of Southwark Defend Council Housing, and I will work with any tenant group which wants to resist the Council’s unaccountable use of power.

I look forward to seeing James at Tenants Council in future. I hope he will join me and the other tenants who want to fight against the demolition of our council estates and the social cleansing of working class people out of Southwark.

Let’s work together on the Tenants Council to give it the teeth we both want. Let’s ignite that fire so our side can win.

Y THE time you will be reading this voting will be taking place across Southwark on election-day.

All the party manifestoes have now been published and the bids for the procycling votes are in. The amounts they propose should be spent per person on making our streets safer for kids and adults to cycle on are: Greens £30, Lib Dems £10, Labour £3.70, Tories £0.79, UKIP Zero. The Dutch are spending £28 per person and have been doing so for decades. The UK under the coalition spent a minuscule £2 and New Labour spent a derisory £1 when in office.

Transport in Southwark is one of the biggest killers in our communities.

Hundreds of local people are dying every year from horrendous cancers, diabetes, heart and lung diseases due to transport pollution and inactivity diseases due to fear of cycling.

Thousands more are living with terrible disabilities and injuries. Our kids are suffering epidemic levels of obesity and unfitness. Transport pollution is a major contributor to the climate crisis which threatens to flood Southwark up as far as Peckham in future generations. And investment in cycling returns over £10 per pound invested to the local economy.

So the above figures represent how seriously the major parties really care about Southwark’s health crisis, our local economy and the terrible threat the climate crisis poses to the Borough.

The cycling campaign group Stop Killing Cyclists met six months ago with the Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes to raise our concerns after he tried to gate-crash one of our die-ins.

But nothing more was ever heard from him. Cllr Neil Coyle (who is opposing Hughes) was part of the Labour Council which outrageously banned all new cycle-lanes in the borough.

Peckham’s Harriet Harman MP did nothing to stop her Labour colleagues removing all existing cycle lanes in the plans for Peckham & Nunhead.

Interestingly the All People’s Party election leaflets of Prem Goyal are the only ones to feature a promise to spend 10% of the transport budget on protected cycle lanes in Southwark.

Whoever wins today’s election, let’s hope our new government and MPs usher in a new positive era for cycling in Southwark.

A BAND of troubadours accompanied the audience’s entrance to Shakespeare’s Globe with music to dance and clap along to, creating an air of merriment for all to absorb. But the mood changed very quickly when that erstwhile band of merry men set upon a Jew that happened to walk by. Welcome to Shakespeare’s Venice, writes Michael Holland...

Old Bill’s Merchant of Venice is a mash up of plotting and planning with a bit of skulduggery thrown in for good measure, plus a lot of courting of the pretty Portia.

Portia’s got a few quid so has several suitors, though she has eyes for just one – Bassanio. Luckily for her he has similar feelings so he borrows a chunk of money from the Jewish moneylender Shylock in order to visit Portia in style and give it the big ‘un. The money, though, comes with a proviso that his friend Antonio must give a pound of his flesh if the debt is not repaid. Harsh but fair, considering Antonio has and ecstasy, a celebration of the struggles of living and the fear of mortality. Studio Sienko, May 6-13, 11am-7.30pm, free.

victory before I lost count of the antiSemitic points rapidly mounting up.

What a surprise.

There was a nice pairing of Jonathan Pryce as Shylock and his real daughter Phoebe as Jessica, and there were a couple of stand-out scenes for me: when Launcelot Gobbo coerces two innocents from amongst the Groundlings on to the stage to be his dual conscience – One to goad him on and one to hold him back; and another when the Prince of Arragon chose his box in the style of Larry Grayson. I think we were all pleased for Portia that he chose wrongP In this production there is no big joyous finale, but one where we see the damage done to Shylock and his daughter. A more fitting end than what has gone before methinks.

he first mayor of Bermondsey is about to get a long-awaited make-over after standing in all weathers for more than a hundred years, writes Amelia Burr...

The statue of Samuel Bourne Bevington in Tooley Street was erected in 1911, so by now the Grade II listed bronze memorial could do with some TLC, but who was the man behind the memorial?

Although considered a 'man of the people', well-loved by the working classes in the former Bermondsey Borough of the 1800s, Bevington was born into an eminent family associated with the founding of the Quaker movement.

William Bevington of Eatington was thrown into a Warwick jail for consorting with George Fox, the founder of the rebellious sect.

His descendants moved to London in the eighteenth century and set up Bevington and Sons, the leather firm of the Neckinger Mills in Bermondsey.

Baby Samuel was born in 1832 and by the age of nineteen he had joined the family firm and went on to become a senior partner. In his 75 years he was a Colonel of the West Surrey Regiment, commanding 700 men, a Justice of the Peace, a member of numerous school boards and a Bermondsey librarian.

In November 1900 when the Bermondsey Borough Council was established, Bevington was unanimously elected to the post

OUR COLONEL REALLY CUT THE MUSTARD Samuel Bourne Bevington was an “example to all” and a religious revolutionary

of first mayor of the borough, an honour which was renewed the following year.

This was surely because with his wealth and position he chose to try and help those less fortunate.

He set up hot meals for poor families and better housing.

Bevington was a truly philanthropic gentleman whose faith was the cornerstone of his desire to better his community.

But his religious life holds some surprises. Although brought up and schooled in the Quaker tradition, Bevington went on to become a member of the New Church – based on the teachings of controversial Swedish inventor and philosopher, Emanuel Swedenborg.

The same portrait of Bevington which hung in the council chamber of Bermondsey Town Hall, also hangs in the headquarters of the Swedenborg Society in Bloomsbury, where Bevington was Chairman at the time of his death. The purpose of the society was to translate Swedenborg's extensive commentaries on the bible from Latin into English and espouse his message to the masses.

Swedenborg was a capable and respected scientist in the 1700s often put on a parallel with Da

Vinci for his inventions.

In 1745 he had a vision of Christ in a London pub and from then on claimed to be an instrument of God – intended to interpret the Bible.

Through 35 volumes of theological writings, Swedenborg hoped to bring the every-man closer to God, encouraging Christians to know the Lord through love and good deeds, rather than adhering to a set of strict rules set out by the Church.

However, he is also remembered

He read lessons at the New Church in Bromley and minutes show he was quite the evangelist of his faith at meetings held in Bermondsey at the Drill Hall he had built.

Colonel Bevington was driven by his belief that the good deeds you do in this life will save you in the next and following his death in 1907, it was clear his generosity of spirit had touched the hearts of the Bermondsey community.

At his packed out funeral Rev'd H.Lewis said: “Bermondsey has lost one from whom it had received much during his life; one whom they all delighted to know, and all felt the better for having been associated with him.” The internment then took place at Snodland where a New Church service for burial was read. The following day, Rev'd E Murnane, of the Catholic Church in Dockhead, made an unusually personal address from the pulpit when he said: “I must break through our customary

The Rev’d said: “That he had touched and won the hearts of the people was shown by the wonderful spontaneous manifestation of popular sorrow at his death and funeral. It was creditable to the people of Bermondsey and a striking tribute to the character and life-long work of Colonel Bevington.”

The bronze statue of Bermondsey's upper class hero of the working classes depicts the distinguished Colonel in all his mayoral grandeur and tells the story of his impact in a short inscription reading: “Erected by his fellow citizens.”

ith jazz being such a cult musical genre any whiff of there being any to be had locally is a must for fans, and that is why I found myself at The Yellow House for their regular FirstSaturday-Of-The-Month jazz night, writes Michael Holland...

Not because I could in any way be labelled a jazz fan but because I like to keep on top of what’s going on in the borough.

The Mod Queen of Bethnal Green, who offered to take us on her souped up scooter, accompanied me but I declined her kind offer, quoting a weather report of rain as a get out clause. I asked if she liked jazz and her hard nut stare gave me an answer.

The Yellow House has an impressive menu and wine list but the Ace Face was not messing about and quickly ordered the beef followed by the, er, beef! I like to mix it up a little so went for a fish dish followed by a game option.

As we quenched our thirst with a drop of Peroni the two-man combo set up their equipment.

The Yellow House earnt its spurs when it opened in Plough Way and built up such a reputation and custom it found itself compelled to transfer to larger premises, so took over the former Jolly Caulkers.

Those who knew the old pub will be amazed at the transformation. It is much brighter now, though still has traces of what went before: the fireplace and the dark wood panelling. The sticky carpet has gone and oak boards have taken its place. The bar has also been altered to fit the more modern look. With an open kitchen we could see the pizza chef working maniacally to keep up with orders, and managing. Well done that man.

My House Fish Fingers arrived looking a little scorched but that extra crispiness added to the overall effect. My companion’s Roast Scotch Beef slices in Lentil Salad with Horseradish looked utterly scrumptious, its pinkness shining through the scattered salad leaves. The lady confirmed my suspicions that it was very nice.

Robert, one of the Grand Fromages at The Yellow House, came over to say hello and talk us through recent changes and future ideas, which do sound a little exciting.

I ordered a glass of Rioja, a medium-bodied red with lots of lovely flavour, and Scooter Boots had another Peroni before reminiscing about driving down to Margate to have a row with some Rockers. Luckily our main courses came just before she was about to

give a demonstration of how she used to ‘put the boot in’!

As stated before, Mod Bird had chosen the Fillet Steak, a sizeable chunk of meat still sizzling from the grill, that she said was delicious. It certainly seemed to cut very easily under the knife. I had the Roast Wood Pigeon, which was as game as the bird opposite, and was a perfect counter for the soft and tasty Potato Dauphinois and Blueberry Jus. Mark Jennett got another round of applause then sang another easy listening song, while I listened to some frankly dodgy buying and selling deals from my dining partner. With the music playing I couldn’t quite hear and at one point I wasn’t sure what she meant when she mentioned ‘body parts’; I’m hoping it was Lambretta spares…

Our waiter had shown us the Pudding of the Day, which was a glazed Apple Tart. I immediately said I would have it, but then got gazumped by my better half.

‘Ladies first,’ she said determinedly… I rescheduled for a Chocolate Pudding but demanded that we share halvesy, to which she agreed. We paired these with two amazing dessert wines that really set those puddings off.

I’m more a savoury than sweet man but I have to say that the desserts – all made in-house – were superb.

We both struggled to decide which was better, though we both came down on the side of the Chocolate Pudding. Just.

All in all we had a very enjoyable evening in The Yellow House.

Dulwich Hamlet are still waiting to hear when they can complete their season.

The delay stems from Enfield Town, who are set to play Hendon in their semifinal, being deducted three points as they fielded an ineligible player in January.

If the status quo remains Enfield will drop out of the play off picture and Metropolitan Police will replace them.

However Enfield are appealing the decision, a hearing which is set to take place tomorrow, as they claim they had settled the issue with the FA by not playing the individual in question in games after informing the football authorities of the mistake.

On Enfield’s website they have already issued a plea for funds from fan’s should the north London club decide to take their appeal any further, assuming the hearing on Friday goes against them.

SURREY DUO Jason Roy and Zafar Ansari are in line to make their international one-day debuts in tomorrow’s England game against Ireland in Dublin.

The pair are in the squad named by the ECB earlier this week and they could line up against another Surrey man in the shape of Gary Wilson, who was named in the Ireland squad announced last week.

All three players participating in the contest will be available for the Kennington sides’ next Championship fixture against Leicestershire, which is due to get underway at the Kia Oval on

Last week Surrey drew their second first class fixture of the new season when rain brought a premature end to their contest against Essex.

Surrey appeared to be in some trouble going into the final day of the contest as they had eight wickets remaining and would need to bat out the day to secure parity.

But in the end the rain came down and there was no play at all at the Kia Oval meaning Surrey had to settle for nine bonus points whilst the visitors secured twelve points.

The home side mustered 340 in

their first innings thanks largely to knocks of 78 from Rory Burns and 81 from Steven Davies.

But Essex compiled a massive 610 in reply, with teenage debutante Daniel Lawrence top scoring with 161, leaving the Kia Oval outfit with their backs against the wall when they batted again.

The Essex attack managed to remove opener Ansari, for a duck, and Kumar Sangakkara for 43 before stumps on day three but that was the end of the action as the weather washed out the final day.

Jason Roy is in line to make his one day international debut tomorrow

THE DULWICH first team will be in action this weekend as they will fulfil a pledge to play a charity fixture for Walworth mental health group Cooltan Arts.

Hamlet played a similar contest two years ago for the News’ Evelina Children’s Hospital efforts which raised more than £1,000.

This Sunday at Champion Hill Hamlet will take on Peckham Town, kick off 2pm, in order to support Dulwich’s new official charity partners.

Mishi Morath, from the Dulwich Hamlet Football Committee, said: "With our link-up with Cooltan Arts, and wanting to highlight Mental Health Awareness Week, this seemed the perfect match to stage.

“And as always, [Hamlet manager] Gavin Rose, his staff and players have been so supportive in giving up their time to play the game."

Garton back in action

WELTERWEIGHT JOHNNY Garton will once again defend his Southern Area title on Saturday week at York Hall, Bethnal Green.

NEIL HARRIS has made his intentions clear - his Millwall team of the future will be “young, hungry and athletic”.

And that is music to the ears of the Lions’ academy stars who Harris coached and managed during his time running the U21s.

Harris’ view is that if the kids are good enough, they’re old enough to play for the Lions’ first team.

He has already demonstrated his faith in youth by starting Aiden O’Brien in each of his ten games as a manager so far, and Sid Nelson in all but one.

For Jack Powell, who was limited to seven senior appearances in the season just gone, and Ben Thompson, with only one outing under his belt, their breakthrough year lies ahead of them.

But 2015-16 could be that year. And the opening day of the League One campaign, on August 8, is only 93 days away.

Nelson, O’Brien, Powell and Thompson are sitting in a small room at the club’s training ground this week, reflecting on their individual trials and tribulations of the past ten months.

The crop of exciting youngsters coming through at The Den is by no means limited to this quartet; good things are also expected of Jamie Philpot - on target at Wolves - and Alfie Pavey, both of whom made their league debuts last Saturday.

Having won the club’s Young Player of the Year award, Nelson is the first to look back on a whirlwind introduction to first-team football.

“I’m chuffed with that award,” the centre back told the News. “It’s not something I expected at the start of the season and I didn’t expect to get a good run in the team like I did at the end. It’s all come as a bit of a shock for me, but I’m buzzing.

“I was thrown into a difficult situation after a run of defeats and then, within the space of my first five games, I was sent off and scored an own goal.

“And the Wolves game was probably my most difficult afternoon in a Millwall shirt against a quality forward line. But those experiences will really help me for next year.”

The last eight weeks are also worth their weight in gold to O’Brien.

Coming into a team that has struggled to score goals for the past three seasons was never going to be an easy task, but he threw himself into the challenge and improved game-by-game - netting twice.

“Right now I’m just over the moon to have played games in the Championship,” O’Brien said. “It seems unreal because I wasn’t getting a look-in at the start of the season - at best I was getting five or ten minutes here and there.

“But I’ve had a good run under Neil and I’ve paid him back with some good performances and a few goals.

Hopefully next year I can play a full season and get more goals under my belt.”

Ian Holloway had used O’Brien as a winger but Harris was quick to restore him to a striking role.

“As a kid I played up front or just behind the striker,” O’Brien added.

“Playing out wide was very different and very difficult for me. I played out there numerous times under Holloway but he didn’t really get the best out of me.

“I always work hard for my teammates and the manager but I need the ball to feet - I’m better on the ball than off it.

When I’ve got the ball at my feet I feel I can make things happen and create something out of nothing.”

O’Brien starting the last ten games alongside Lee Gregory could prove invaluable come next season.

“We’re starting to connect now,” he said. “It’s not easy to connect straight away because we were two different

players who didn’t know each other’s style, and Lee only came to the club this season.

“We’ve just started playing together but it’s a joy for me. I look up to my strike partner. What Gregory does off the ball is something that I want to reproduce one day soon. We’ve got a lot more to offer next year.”

Thompson and Powell’s feelings about this season are more mixed.

Despite regularly travelling to away games with the first team, Thompson’s only appearance came in a League Cup tie against Southampton way back in August.

He was stripped and ready to come on as a substitute at Molineux last weekend - but an injury to Philpot, who had

marked his debut with a goal, saw Pavey brought on instead.

“I was devastated but also very pleased for Alfie to get on the pitch,” Thompson said.

“Jamie came on, got his goal and then had to come off four minutes later.

That’s football and that’s what happens.

At the time I wasn’t too happy, not at all, but I’ve got next season to look forward to.

“It’s been a long wait for me. I’ve been in and out of the senior squad a lot this season and been in the squad for a lot of games, so it’s definitely coming for me.

“Watching Sid and Aiden get a chance has given me more and more confidence that I can do the same.

They’re great young players and we’ve

been playing together in training and for the U21s, so it’s great to see.”

Of all Millwall’s youngsters, Powell was the first to burst onto the scene this year.

But despite making a hugely impressive debut against Blackpool in August, regular starting opportunities weren’t forthcoming.

“It’s difficult getting one game in the team, having a few months out and then getting a game again to show your full potential and how well you can really do,” Powell said.

“Sid and Aiden will say that it’s taken them a few games to play at their best and I never really got that opportunity. I thought I did fairly well in my first few games but it was a long, long time until

“My last three appearances were quite spread out. It is difficult but it was good to be back out there against Wolves. It was a tough game but I enjoyed it and I thought I did alright.”

Powell was substituted at half time by Holloway in only his second Championship outing - away at Ipswich.

The midfielder added: “I’ve been dragged off quite a few times now, so I’m used to it!

“Ipswich was my first-ever away game and it was a little bit different. I found it difficult. Ipswich were physical, they played at a high tempo and we didn’t have much of the ball, which doesn’t particularly suit me.

“It was a tough one. We conceded right before half time and Holloway brought me off. I don’t know whether he’d have changed things at 0-0.

“I suppose it’s all part of the experience because the youngest player takes the rap a little bit.”

Powell wants to bulk up in preparation for a bruising League One campaign.

“A few people have said that to me and

it’s always a goal of mine,” he said. “It’s not particularly easy for me but I do try throughout the season.

“The summer is an important time because you don’t have a lot of training to do so you can get in the gym more often.”

Nelson jumps in.

“We can go to the gym together, can’t we?” he says.

“Yeah,” continues Powell, “we can put on a few pounds so that you can start muscling strikers out the way!

“But yeah, it’s always been a goal of mine to improve physically and get stronger because that’s something I need to work on. I want to come back fit, come back strong and get into the team as quickly as possible.

“I want a run of games because that’s what I missed out on this season.”

Nelson, O’Brien, Powell and Thompson have each had different experiences but all share the same excitement for the future with Harris at the helm.

“It’s exciting when you see another of the young lads playing in the first

team,” Nelson added.

“When I saw Jack and Aiden coming in at the start of the season, I was buzzing for them. We’ve been playing together for the last few years, week in, week out.

“In first-team football the line-up changes all the time - the manager picks the best team he can to win a game. But in the U21s, it’s the same group every week and that becomes your group. It’s good to see everyone playing now.”

Thompson has had the least playing time in the room - so he’s doubly determined to impress during preseason.

“I think the manager likes me as a player and he’s tried to get me in and around the first team this year,” Thompson said.

“I’ve been looking at Nicky Bailey and thinking ‘I want to play like that’.

He’s aggressive, loves a tackle and he’s got great vision as well. His positioning and talking is all second to none.

“I think I’ll have a good chance next season to show people what I can do.”

Philpot, who only signed a professional contract last week, tapped in from close range on an afternoon when another academy product, Aiden O'Brien, was also on target.

But the pace and power of Kenny Jackett's side was often too much to handle for the visitors, although Wolves' four-goal haul wasn't enough to get them into the play-offs.

They held a slender lead at half time thanks to Nouha Dicko's 20th-minute strike and he thundered in a terrific second goal after the restart.

O'Brien pulled one back from Lee Gregory's centre only for Ethan Ebanks-Landell to make it 3-1.

But Ed Upson's cross was converted

by Philpot eight minutes from time to move Millwall back to within a goal of their hosts.

Bakary Sako made the game safe, however, when the Lions switched off at a free kick and his shot from a narrow angle went between David Forde's legs.

This was Neil Harris' first game since taking over permanently and, despite some chaotic defending, he'll have been pleased with much of the performance.

With one eye already on next season, Harris named a youthful squad at Molineux including no less than six recent graduates of the club's youth system.

Sid Nelson and O'Brien, who have both been regulars under Harris, were joined in the side by central midfielder Jack Powell.

Mark Beevers and Upson also returned to the line-up after illness and suspension respectively.

Ben Thompson, Alfie Pavey and Philpot were on the bench, but Jos Hooiveld, Nicky Bailey, Martyn Woolford, Ricardo Fuller and Gary Taylor-Fletcher weren't involved.

After an early Millwall corner was only-half cleared by the Wolves defence, Gregory looped a header over the bar from Nelson's cross.

In the 15th minute, Jimmy Abdou's appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears when his header from Dan Harding's centre appeared to be blocked by an arm.

and, after a lightening-quick counterattack, Rajiv van La Parra got goal-side of the Lions defence only to be denied

by Forde.

But Wolves took the lead when Beevers' attempted tackle on Sako diverted the ball into the path of Dicko, who scored from close range.

Lee Martin wasted a good chance to equalise when he made a mess of his attempted lob over Tomasz Kuszczak after beating the offside trap.

Powell then drilled harmlessly wide from distance before playing an almost-perfect through ball to Gregory, who was unable to control inside the box.

Following a change of formation at half time, Millwall made a strong start to the second period and Harding fired an early chance wide.

Martin then crossed for O'Brien at the near post and after a couple of bites at the cherry, he finally got a clean strike away and his effort was cleared off the line.

But Wolves doubled their advantage on the break when Dicko rolled Nelson, cut in from the left flank and drove an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

O'Brien quickly made it 2-1 when Powell's free kick was parried to Gregory, who fired the ball back across goal to leave the youngster with an easy finish Millwall enjoyed a spell of dominance after the goal, with Upson and Gregory shooting over from good positions on the edge of the box and Martin testing Kuszczak.

But after Harding brought down Afobe in the right channel, Sako's ferocious free kick went through a crowd of bodies before being turned in

by Ebanks-Landell.

Back came the Lions, however, and Philpot, minutes after coming on for his debut, slid in at the far post to convert Upson's deep cross and make it 3-2.

The youngster had to be substituted moments later after picking up an injury – meaning he was on the field for a total of just eight minutes.

Sako put an added gloss on the scoreline with Wolves' fourth goal in stoppage time, taking advantage of some lapse defending before firing through Forde's legs.

Long-serving director feels club betterequipped to rebuild after relegation

CONSTANTINE GONTICAS is the only board member at Millwall who has experienced relegation before.

But no two relegations are the same, and Gonticas believes the circumstances of the Lions’ drop into League One this time around are very different to nine years ago.

When the club lost its Championship status in 2006, Gonticas says Millwall “were in disarray”.

Nigel Spackman was hired to rebuild the squad and subsequently signed 17 new players. Spackman was sacked in September after a disastrous start to the season and five consecutive defeats.

The Lions eventually stabilised under Willie Donachie and rallied to a tenth-place finish but it was clear that the road back into the second tier would be a long and bumpy one - and so it may prove again.

But Gonticas is confident that with Neil Harris and Dave Livermore at

the helm, Millwall can make a stronger challenge upon their return to League One than they did last time.

He said: “We had to start completely from scratch during the close season nine years ago. This time round, the people that are going to be taking us into next season have had the last ten games in charge.

“We finished the season not necessarily with brilliant results, but strongly in terms of performances.

The team played with spirit and finished on an upward curve as opposed to last time when we ended with a series of defeats.

“Therefore in a sense we are ahead, preparation-wise, of where we were nine years ago.

“The youth system is also in a much better place and we’ve known for the last two months who our management team was going to be.

“That’s a big difference to last time and a big difference to most clubs that are relegated - normally the first task of a relegated club is to find a new manager. We won’t have to do that so we are hitting the ground running.

“That said, it will be important to carry on preparing over the summer, to be absolutely ready for the new season and to go into it with confidence but also with an awareness of the competitive nature of League One.” Gonticas hopes that Harris and Livermore’s thorough understanding of the club will give them a head-start on previous management teams.

“These two have old heads on young shoulders,” he said. “I’ve been incredibly impressed with the maturity they’ve both shown and their wisdom.

“Yes, they are a very young coaching duo but they’re the first coaching duo for a long while that has come from our own ranks. They’ve played for the club for an extended period and grasp the ethos of playing for Millwall.

“That gives them a significant advantage over outsiders. Even successful managers here have taken time to understand the Millwall ethos.

With Neil and Dave, we are starting immediately - we won’t have a

bedding-in period on that particular aspect.”

But while there is undoubtedly optimism for the future, Gonticas is under no illusions about the size of the task ahead in a lower division.

“There is still a rebuilding job to do,” he added. “The club has to get used to winning again and used to winning at home again.

“One main characteristic of successful Millwall seasons has been good results at The Den. When we were relegated nine years ago, our home form was significantly worse than our away form, as was the case this time around.

“Everyone hates losing but we’ve become numb to it, and that has to change. We’ve put up with losing for too long. Any team that takes points off Millwall needs to feel they’ve earned those points in blood. It cannot be easy for teams to take points off us.

“We will be one of the bigger scalps next season. Historically this club has risen to challenges against more fancied sides but found it more difficult to impose itself in situations

where victories are expected.

“Dealing with expectation is one of the challenges that we face.”

The weeks immediately after the end of the season give the Lions a chance to reflect on a tumultuous year.

Gonticas says an ongoing dilemma for him personally is knowing when and when not to question a manager’s decisions - be those his choices in the transfer market or team selections on a Saturday.

“You have to back a manager wholeheartedly until you sack him, especially if you have a manager who wears his heart on his sleeve or is emotional,” he explained. “You have to be extremely careful about questioning or putting any doubts in his mind.”

But the board’s approach is changing slightly, Gonticas says.

He explained: “We are removing some of the burden from the manager’s position by providing much more assistance on analytics and recruitment. We want the focus on coaching to be more pure.”

Harris putting in long hours

IT’S BEEN a hectic few days for Neil Harris.

24 hours after Millwall bowed out of the Championship at Molineux, Harris was standing in front of a room of Lions supporters giving a rousing speech at the club’s end-ofseason dinner.

On Bank Holiday Monday, he was in Hertfordshire for the first of two intense days of strategy meetings with the board.

And the following night, the 37year-old played 70 minutes - and scored - in a charity game at The Den. It’s 7am on Wednesday when the Lions legend answers his phone for this interview, and he’s already been on the road for an hour.

These are the realities of football management but a few late nights and early mornings haven’t dented Harris’ enthusiasm one little bit.

“Me and Dave Livermore are young - we’ve got a lot of energy in us and a lot of man hours we can work,” he said.

At The Grove hotel near Watford, Harris set out his vision for next season and beyond to the Millwall hierarchy.

“It was eye-opening, definitely, to see for myself the difficult decisions that have to be taken at boardroom level,” he added.

“I don’t think any of us can really imagine what goes on behind-closeddoors and the decisions the board have to make on behalf of the club, especially after relegation.

“But it really was a fantastic couple of days. We’ve got a chairman and a board who are fully committed to supporting the club, and it was a time for us to get together and plan for the next few months and the next few years as well.

“I’m certainly not taking it as a given that I’ll be sitting here in two years as manager - although I certainly hope to be - but for the longterm future of the club, the board are desperate to plan for the future. They don’t want an overnight fix.

“For too long we’ve been worrying about tomorrow without looking far enough ahead. We’re spending a lot of money on the academy and on the future players of the club, and they have to be the focus of what we put into place.

“If it’s not an immediate success with results on the pitch next season, that’s because these boys need more experience. We’ve seen with Sid Nelson and Aiden O’Brien that they’re not the finished article. They need time to develop.”

Harris says his optimism for the future is shared by the decisionmakers at The Den. “All of the directors - those who have supported the club for years and

“This is hugely encouraging for the club and an indication of how much optimism and belief there is here,” said commercial director Alan Williams.

“There is a genuine sense of unity here again.”

Romeo has played in a handful of U21 games for the Lions in recent weeks and is expected to begin his career at The Den in the development squad.

Born in Westminster, Romeo had spells at Arsenal and Wycombe during his academy days before signing a scholarship with the Gills, where he made one senior appearance.

“Everyone has been really friendly here already and I'm delighted to sign for Millwall,” he said.

Harris’ root-and-branch review of his squad is likely to result in a large number of players departing the club this summer.

And after three seasons of struggle, the Lions boss feels big changes are necessary.

“First and foremost, we’re not just looking at results from the last ten games,” he said. “We’re looking at a period of time where we’ve not achieved what we feel was acceptable in terms of results and performances.

“We need to make changes to enable us to rebuild and start again.

I’m looking to the future so the average age of the squad is something that I’m certainly very interested in.

“You need experienced pros to work with the young lads and you need a camaraderie and a togetherness. We need to get that mix right.”

FORDE FUTURE IN DOUBT?

NEIL HARRIS admits David Forde's future at Millwall could be in doubt following the club's relegation to League One.

Forde, who only signed a lucrative long-term contract last summer, is one of the Lions' longest-serving players.

But Harris expects the 35-year-old to be the subject of offers from other clubs during the close-season.

“Fordey is an international goalkeeper,” said Harris.

“With his international aspirations, will he stay and play in League One? That's only for us to follow in time.

“But I would be absolutely amazed if there wasn't any interest in David.”

WOOD AND THOMPSON PEN DEALS

YOUNGSTERS BEN Thompson and Keaton Wood have signed 12month contract extensions at The Den.

Midfielder Thompson, who has made one senior appearance, was on the bench for Millwall's final-day defeat to Wolves last weekend.

19-year-old Wood, a defender, has recently returned from a loan spell at Billericay.

He said: “It was a different experience to playing for the U21s. It's all about having a decent challenge.

“I have worked so hard to get here, but that doesn't mean I can stop. I am only 19-years-old and have still got so much to learn.”

NEIL HARRIS won’t stand in the way of anyone who wants to leave Millwall after relegation to League One.

The Lions boss will demand total commitment from his squad next season and insists he won’t put up with any unhappy campers.

Harris was yesterday meeting with the club’s out-of-contract players to finalise his plans for 2015-16, with many expected to move on.

Harris told the News: “There are always going to be surprises over the summer and difficult conversations for me to have. All sorts of things come with relegation.

“There might be the odd player who is unsettled or who thinks their future lies at a higher level. If that’s their opinion, that’s not a problem.

“We want players that are committed to this club and who are ready to come back for pre-season training on June 25 for a tough and challenging year.

“If the players are committed to the cause, then they will be part of my squad. If there is any ounce of them that isn’t committed or isn’t sure, I’ll give them the opportunity to see me and we’ll look at moving them on.”

Harris is ready to make his first moves in the transfer market as Millwall head into an important summer.

have a better idea about who is moving on,” he added.

“We’ve got targets in mind already.

Can we deliver them? I hope so and I expect to. Within two weeks, we’ll definitely know who is staying and that will give us a guide in terms of how many signings we need.

“We’ve not committed to having a certain number of players in the squad, but it’s been clear to see that we’ve had too big a turnover of players. Our squad has been too big.

“We’re looking at having a tight-knit squad that’s mixed with youth and experience. We can’t have ten or 12 players who aren’t in the squad each week - you become divided that way.”

The Lions’ budget for next season, which will be one of the biggest in League One, was decided at a board meeting this week.

And Harris will have the opportunity to pay transfer fees for new players.

“The chairman is certainly committed to supporting us,” he said. “We’re not just going to be taking free transfers because they’re cheap, we need the right people to fit into the club and our style of play.

“If we have to go to a club and ask about a player’s availability or price, we will do that. We have a budget to work to and we’ve cut our cloth accordingly for League One but if we want to spend money on a player then we’ll do it in the right manner.”

MILLWALL HAVE confirmed that all of their contracted players will be taking wage cuts this summer.

Harris tells squad of his plans and won't keep any "unsettled" stars

Every player agreed to a salary decrease triggered by relegation when they joined the club - and those changes will now come into effect.

It means the Lions are protected from the financial impact of losing their Championship status, estimated to be £3million-a-year in annual revenue.

Chief executive Andy Ambler said: “That’s been our policy. If a player hasn’t accepted that policy, then they haven’t signed for us.

“It’s a best practice for all clubs and it’s absolutely right - you reward players if they do well and they have to take the consequences of failure.”

Ambler says preparations for League One are well-advanced and that player recruitment will begin immediately.

He said: “There are some gaps that need filling but the majority of the team that finished the season are contracted for next year.

“Left back is certainly a position that needs addressing and it’s clear that we need an experienced striker and centre back. We can go from there.

“There will probably be at least five new signings but it’s not a wholesale change. What we want to see is some of our younger players come through, do well and fill those holes in the squad.

“But we know we have to recruit, we know that we need experience to supplement our home-grown talent and we’ve been working hard on that for weeks.”

Manager Neil Harris intends to strengthen one area of his squad in particular.

“Striker-wise we’re definitely looking to boost the ranks to add to the quality and mix we’ve got already up front,” he said. “We’re definitely looking at strikers but there is room to improve in all areas.

“Once we’ve settled on who’s staying for next season, it will be clear to see where we’ve got competition for places and where we don’t.”
