Police called to reports of 200 people ‘ransacking’ supermarket, ‘terrifying’ customers and staff’

VIOLENCE ERUPTED in Burgess Park and Old Kent Road on Tuesday night, leaving two boys stabbed and two women injured after over 1,000 youths congregated for the break-up of school.

Temperatures had soared to 32C, and between 500 and 600 had gathered for a water fight advertised on social media.

By 8pm police were scrambled to calls of hundreds more at the Tesco superstore in Dunton Road, off Old Kent Road, where police say teens were “causing damage and stealing items”. Two women suffered minor injuries in the store but refused medical attention.

An inspirational campaign

HE CAMPAIGN to reopen Peckham’s buried lido has been imaginative, inspirational and something that brought the community together.

It’s fantastic to see the target smashed this week.

With the benefit of hindsight, the closing of our lidos seems like such short-termism. In the week that people marked the 150th birthday of Ada Salter, who, along with her husband pioneered healthy living for poor constituents in this part of the city, it’s fitting that such a plan to bring back a facility that encourages active, outdoor living has realised its objective.

Of course lidos also faded in popularity after the cost of foreign travel plummeted and more and more people chose to go abroad in the summer. Perhaps, post Brexit and with a heatwave upon us, we can glimpse the glorious future? Staying put all summer, lounging at the lido? There are worse ways to pass the summer, after all.

Congratulations to all those who got this idea off the ground - and good luck to them in their quest to turn it into a reality in the months ahead.

No deterrent

HE CARE assistant - and we use the job description loosely - who defrauded a 93-year-old woman shouldn’t have been given a suspended sentence - she should have gone to prison.

Angela McIntyre claimed she was shopping for the pensioner and convinced her to give her 23 blank cheques worth £4,800 over five months. She’d then give items from around the care home to the elderly woman, to make her think she’d bought them for her. It was only after her bank became suspicious that the con was uncovered.

As with children, abuse and mistreatment of the elderly is something our society must never tolerate. At her great age, this lady deserved to be treated with the utmost kindness, not duped and tricked out of her money.

McIntyre will have to pay compensation of £50 a month for two years - a pathetic sum - and has been given a twelve month suspended sentence. The message is clear - you can take the lifesavings of a very old woman by tricking her into giving you cheques and you won’t go to prison.

All you’ll have to do is pay a little bit back each month, so it’s not too much of an inconvenience to you.

McIntyre has also been banned for life from working in the care industry, but really this sentence is no deterrent whatsoever.

It’s an added insult to the 93-year-old lady.

Police warn Pokemon Go players: Watch out for moped robbers

POLICE HAVE warned Pokemon Go players about walking around the borough with their phones out, after a spate of mobiles robberies by people on mopeds.

The augmented-reality game officially launched in the UK on Thursday, July 14, after it was released in the USA and Australia, with millions rushing to download

it.

The craze involves going out to landmarks to receive points, with opportunities to catch Pokemon characters along the way. When a Pokemon is near you, your phone vibrates and you use your camera to find it, before trying to catch it.

PC Chris Chapman, Southwark Police Community Engagement Officer, said: “We would encourage any members of the public who are playing the new Pokemon Go app, to be extra mindful of this game potentially diverting valuable attention away from your immediate

environment than usual.

“This may increase your risk of accident or being a victim of theft by those targeting you for your mobile or tablet. Mobile Phone theft is still a very real problem, but one that can be greatly reduced by careful use in public. Please enjoy the game, but stay alert to the outside world while you do.”

Over the past few months there have been a string of moped-related thefts across Southwark, causing police to repeatedly warn walkers when there are a high number of mopeds on the roads.

Council: Catch a Pidgeotto in our parks

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has caught on to the Pokemon craze, using the game to encourage people into parks.

The council tweeted a picture of a Pokemon GO bird in one of its parks, saying: “We caught a Pidgeotto in Leathermarket Gardens... It's #loveparksweek what Pokemon will you spot in our parks?”

As Love Parks Week gets officially underway between July 15 and 24, efforts are being made to help raise awareness of the importance of parks.

A YOUNG man was injured in an alleged drive-by shooting on the Denmark Hill Estate on Monday.

Police and an air ambulance were scrambled to a block in Basingdon Way at 1.38pm.

Officers believe the victim was 20years-old, and was struck in his backside by at least one of several bullets, possibly as he tried to turn and run.

One man who did not want to be named said: “I know the kid who got hit. He was shot in the arse in a drive by.

“I think it was gang-related. I don’t live in this street but I know nothing like that ever happens around here. It’s a nice neighbourhood.”

Sat in a play area just opposite the block of flats where police were guarding the street, a mother and her daughter spoke to the News and retold the moment gunfire rang through the estate.

“I knew straightaway,” the teenage daughter said. “It doesn’t sound like fireworks. It made a really loud echoing sound because the bullets hit the door behind him. It’s ridiculous that people would just do this in daylight like this.”

The mother said: “I had just left my house to go to the shop when it happened.

“Literally two minutes before the gun shots I walked out my door and then my kids rang and said there had been a shooting.

“I can’t believe this would happen in my street. It could have been my boy who walked out that door when they drove past. You warn your kids about people carrying knives, but you never expect it to be guns.”

Another man who was parking his car at the entrance to the estate at 1.40pm said he witness the air ambulance trying to land at the green by the play area.

“The ground is too uneven so they had to lift off and land elsewhere before they took him,” the man said.

The victim is believed to be in a stable condition in hospital after the shooting.

A Met Police spokesman said: “We were called by the London Ambulance Service at 13.38pm on Monday, July 18 to reports of a man suffering a gunshot injury on the Denmark Hill Estate, SE5.

“Officers attended. The man, believed to be aged 20, was taken to a south London hospital where he remains in a stable condition; his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The Trident and Gang Crime Command has been informed.

There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.”

A ROTHERHITHE man is desperately searching for a Staffordshire Bull Terrier called Princess, after she fell into the Thames while on a walk.

Jordan Turner lost Princess on the Thames path toward Deptford and Greenwich on Wednesday July 13 at around 12pm.

The brown and white dog slipped on the algae on the Pageant Steps along the C10 bus route on Rotherhithe Street.

Jordan said: “She was walking off her lead around the Thames path when she slipped down the steps into the Thames. She went under and that’s the last time I saw her.”

HUNDREDS GATHER TO PAY RESPECTS TO SAM KING

HUNDREDS GATHERED at the funeral service of the late Sam King MBE at Southwark Cathedral on Tuesday, to mourn his passing and celebrate his life.

Tributes were paid by his granddaughter Dione McDonald, and his son, the reverend Michael King, as well as by former colleagues and Camberwell and Peckham MP, Harriet Harman.

Mr King will be remembered for his contributions to Southwark as the borough’s first black mayor, and as the first Jamaican man to become a mayor in the UK. He died aged 90 on June 17 at St Christopher’s Hospice.

For those who stood to pay tribute to Mr King, there was an endless catalogue of his achievements to choose from. His story began when aged eighteen he volunteered in 1944 to leave his farmland home in Portland, Jamaica, to join the RAF as an engineer.

Standing at the pulpit and summing up his father’s spirit and achievements, Reverend Michael said: “My father was not born an exceptional man, nor was he exceptionally educated, but he was

exceptionally called of God. “…He was brave to travel to Britain to take part in the war. He volunteered while young men here were being conscripted. He crossed the ocean knowing one-in-three ships were being sunk by wolf packs of Nazi U-boats.”

He returned to the UK in 1948 aboard the famous SS Windrush, and moved to Sears Street in Camberwell to become a postman.

The first ever black publication, the West Indian Gazette, was cofounded in Brixton by Mr King in 1958. That same year, he and his colleague at the Gazette, Claudia

Jones, helped organise the first ever Notting Hill Carnival, then called the West Indian Carnival, which took place at St Pancras Town Hall.

He joined the Labour Party and became a councillor for the Bellenden ward in 1982 and became mayor in ’83.

Mr King spent his later years living in Warmington Road in Herne Hill, where his Blue Plaque was unveiled in January 2009, the same year he received his MBE from the Queen. Earlier this year he was granted the Freedom of the Borough at Southwark Cathedral.

Campaign to reopen lido smashes target

THE CAMPAIGN to reopen Peckham Rye Park’s buried lido has surpassed its crowdfunding target after two big pledges from Southwark Council and a local businessman.

Southwark Council’s £10,000 donation on Monday brought the Peckham Lido project’s total to within three-quarters of its £63,347 target.

On Tuesday afternoon the target was reached thanks to a £3,000 donation from Southwark resident Dan Sutherland, CEO of tech firm Carrenza.com.

Another resident, Fraser Simpson, became the final and 1,108th pledger,

taking the campaign to £63,933, with ten days still to go before its deadline.

Chris Romer-Lee, director and cofounder of Studio Octopi, told the News: “We’re absolutely delighted.

“The rollercoaster of these crowdfunding [campaigns] never ceases to amaze me. Just when there was a little glimmer of a doubt that you’re not going to make it, the unbelievable happened.

“I think Southwark Council putting it that £10,000 really acted as a catalyst.

Maybe when people saw them add their support it really make them think there was something to this.

“The position the council are in is that they can’t spend the money themselves and wouldn’t be able to afford to run the Lido, but they can give their support to people who want to start their own

projects like this.

“We now have to look way beyond and see how we’re going to start building the thing. We’ve got a long way to go but we

have stormed it.”

Donations have also come from London mayor Sadiq Khan, as well as actor James Norton, pop star Katy B and

MP Harriet Harman.

The company who founded the campaign was architectural firm Studio Octopi, who will now use the money to proceed with a planning application to the council: a business plan, commercial strategy, and to undergo public consultations.

The bid to reopen the outdoor pool was launched in May, with the hope of reviving a lido that existed at the northend of the park between 1923 and 1987, before it was filled in.

The new designs from Studio Octopi are for the pool to be 180-foot long, with space for a café and community area.

The pool would also be heated and chlorine free.

Temperatures had soared to 32C, and between 500 and 600 had gathered for a water fight advertised on social media.

Eyewitnesses have said at 6.30pm at least 200 were making their way on both sides of Albany Road, moving towards Walworth Road.

By 8pm police were scrambled to calls of hundreds more at the Tesco superstore in Dunton Road, off Old Kent Road, where police say teens were “causing damage and stealing items”. Two women suffered minor injuries in the store but refused medical attention.

Police were still at Tesco on Wednesday morning.

By 9pm over 100 teenagers were seen sprinting in a panicked “stampede” back up Albany Road, away from Walworth Road, after it appeared three youngsters had been knifed.

Police have confirmed that two boys were stabbed. Local sources have told the News that one was knifed in the back and

the other boy in the leg. Neither are believed to have life-threatening injuries and both were taken to a south London hospital.

One resident told the News: “There were loads of kids up and down Burgess Park because school was broken up. It’s always like this when school finishes at Burgess Park – the police should have known.

“Me and a few other mums in the area called the police at 6.30pm, but all that

came was just four officers, and they were standing there and watching.

“After that the youths were all moving down to Walworth Road. Then later on there were loads of fights kicking off.

That’s when people were telling the four officers to get down there.

“At 9pm there were loads of kids running away and I saw one of the boys getting chased. Suddenly there was blue lights all over the place and it was swarming with Old Bill, and three

ambulances came. There’s always something like this every year when school is over. The police should have known something would happen. We called them and they didn’t act.”

Officers and a police cordon remained at the scene until Wednesday as investigations continued. No arrests had been made at the time of going to press on Wednesday.

Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Messinger, borough commander for

Southwark, said: "While at this stage we do not believe the events at Burgess Park to be linked to disorder elsewhere in London last night, clearly there are similarities with incidents quickly breaking out amongst a large group of youths.

"Two boys were stabbed, fortunately neither suffering serious injuries, and a supermarket was also ransacked which was terrifying for staff and customers alike.

"These are serious incidents and unacceptable. We are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with information to come forward."

Elsewhere in the capital, Tuesday night saw an eruption of riots at Hyde Park in Westminster, when over 2,000 gathered for a ‘water fight’. Scotland Yard confirmed on Wednesday that three police were injured, one with a stab wound and another officer with a head injury.

The night of violence also follows last month’s knife attack at the park, when a fifteen-year-old was ambushed at Burgess Park Funfair on June 5. Similar complaints were made by locals who said there was a lack of police presence.

TWO MEN have been banged up after a gun factory was found in a home in Alvey Street, Walworth.

The two men: Billy Burls and Bradley Walford, who were not from the area, were caught after local people raised their suspicions with the police.

Officers arrested the crooks after entering the flat in November and discovering eight or nine firearms, component parts, ammunition and various power tools.

Two shotgun butts, one long shotgun barrel and quantity of ammunition were also present within this flat, along with a welding machine and a heavy-duty lathe.

The coppers also found a heat-sealed tent, hydroponic light and two cannabis plants and within the tent was a sawn-off shotgun (a twelve-bore Beretta) which had been deemed capable of projecting lethal missiles by the attending forensic scientist.

Shotgun cartridges were also present in a chest of drawers within the bedroom.

Burls, 32, of Mason Road in Rye, Sussex, was found guilty on May 19 by a jury. 29-year-old Walford, of no fixed address, had pleaded guilty to the offences after his arrest.

Some of the firearms found at the premises were bought from a trader who specialises in deactivated weapons in East Grinstead in Sussex.

These were bought by Burls on September 21 and October 26, 2015.

Officers linked the guns to Burls as he provided his passport when purchasing some of these items. The twelve bore Beretta, which was in original condition, had been shortened, and may have been stolen, but this is

yet to be confirmed.

COUNCIL EX TENDS CONSULTATION ON OLD KENT ROAD BY 6 WEEKS

SIX WEEKS of further consultation for the Old Kent Road Area Action Plan has been announced after residents raised concerns, meaning it will now last until the end of October.

At an Old Kent Road community forum meeting, residents emphasised worries over the amount of time Southwark Council was giving residents to take part in the consultations.

With a view to build 20,000 homes in the area as well as two new Bakerloo line tube stations, they wanted assurances that they would have enough time fully to understand the proposals.

Ulrike Steven, an Unwin Estate resident, said: “I think it’s great that they have extended the consultation.

It would be better if it were until the end of December though. It’s just such a big area and there’s a lot to digest.

“Six weeks is a good start and it would be good to also set up a workshop for people to drop into. It’s important that a lot of these decisions are made accessible and that people are engaged. Unless you have a background in housing you can’t access the stuff.

“It’s important so people don’t feel betrayed and that they can trust the council. It’s not about going around saying “it’s all bad”, we just want to understand it properly. That way the proposal will be better.

“It’s a long process and it makes you anxious when you don’t

The News previously reported how a meeting organised by community group Peckham Weeklies saw the issue raised about how there were not enough people getting engaged with the process.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, said: “There is a real opportunity to bring new homes and jobs to the Old Kent Road and we want to hear from as many local people as possible about the proposals so that they can help shape the plan for the area. Significant consultation has already taken place including nine local forums and two business consultation workshops, with the feedback included in the draft area action plan that we are consulting on now, and we have written to 15,000 households and businesses in the area.

“We will also attend local tenants’ meetings, community forums and local events to speak to people directly. We are also embracing new technology like our Dialogue service to encourage people to give us feedback online any time of the day.

“If local people still have concerns or feel there is another way we can get information out to their neighbourhood I would ask them to contact us and we will be happy to speak to them and I would encourage residents to get involved with the consultations now to help shape the Old Kent Road for the future.”

Bike battery ‘may have caused blaze’ CAMBERWELL: Six fire engines and 35 firefighters were called to a flat fire on Sunday afternoon.

The blaze broke out at in the thirdfloor apartment in Camberwell Road at 2.33pm.

Investigators believe it was caused by a lithium-ion battery for an electric bicycle overheating while being charged.

Two people living in the flat called to a neighbour for help, who rang the fire brigade.

London Ambulance Service treated the two occupants at the scene.

A third of that flat was damaged by fire and the flat above suffered heat damage.

Firefighters from Old Kent Road, Brixton, Lambeth, Norbury and Peckham fire stations attended and had the fire under control by 4.31pm.

A BOROUGH care assistant who defrauded a 93-year-old pensioner has been given a twelve month suspended sentence and is banned for life from working in the care industry.

Angela McIntyre, 55, of Falmouth

Road claimed she was shopping for the pensioner in Chelsea and convinced her to give her 23 blank cheques worth £4,800 over five months.

McIntyre would then give items from around the care home to the elderly woman with the impression she had bought them for her.

McIntyre was found guilty of obtaining money by fraud at Isleworth Crown Court on June 30 and ordered to pay compensation of £50 a month for two years.

PC Colin McMeekin, an officer on the case, said: "McIntyre abused her position of trust and care to defraud a vulnerable woman.

"She continued with her scam over many months and was stopped after we were alerted by the bank. The victim was extremely shocked following this discovery.

"This case shows that anyone who is afforded a ‘position of trust’ over vulnerable adults and breaches that trust in a criminal manner will be vigorously pursued and brought to justice by the relevant authorities."

Peckham Palms gets green light PECKHAM

Engineers working to repair sink hole under railway track

SOUTHWARK: Engineers are repairing a sink hole that has opened under the tracks near Forest Hill station, caused delays and rail diversions for days.

The bizarre incident has affected two lines: London Overground services to Brockley, New Cross Gate, Surrey Quays, Canada Water and Rotherhithe, while the other affected line goes to South Bermondsey Station and London Bridge.

All four lines between Norwood Junction and London Bridge were closed after the discovery, while engineers carried out major repairs, Network Rail said.

Police were called out to assist with rush hour crowds at several stations after passengers were urged to travel via Victoria and Blackfriars instead.

“Until the ballast is packed into the hole we won’t know for certain if the hole is stable or not so passengers are advised to check before they travel,” a Network Rail spokesman told the News shortly after the hole was discovered.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has approved its plans to relocate the afro-Caribbean salons to a new shopping area in Peckham before the Peckham Rye Station Arcade is demolished.

The decision by the council’s planning committee means £1m will be invested into building the shopping hub for thirteen units along Bournemouth Close, with proposals also in place for cafés and restaurants.

Designs so far show it will be lined with palm trees, with a roof canopy, and has been nicked named Peckham Palms.

The parcel of land running parallel with Rye Lane is occupied by twelve, mostly disused garages, that were owned by residents of the adjacent Atwell Estate, until the council made a forced buy-out on April 4.

But the decision has upset families living in the adjacent Atwell Estate, whose homes back directly on to the site.

Several residents had raised concerns during public consultations about the added noise, litter and antisocial behaviour they fear will be brought to their neighbourhood.

T&RA, Shirley Nield, 73, said: “The council don’t listen, they will just do what they are going to do. They don’t listen to normal people so we will just put up with it.

“We’re already sick of the noise here and having these shops and a bar at the end of our gardens will make it even worse. On a hot day like this you want your bedroom window

open, but we just won’t be able to.

And this estate is screaming out for parking bays.

“How can the council be allowed to just put a load of shops and a bar next to people’s homes? We have our fingers crossed it will die a death, or that the whole thing will be a flop for the council.”

salon in Blenheim Grove, Omo Rhuasa, 55, said: “I don’t like the idea at all. We have a really strong community here already, and we make money by people coming in and socialising and deciding to buy things as they walk past.

“These salons are famous all over the country. People in Birmingham and Liverpool come here. People won’t notice us if we’re over in Bournemouth Close.

“I understand why the Atwell Estate residents are upset. They don’t want to have loads of noise from businesses right by their houses. It’s a residential area.”

The council announced in May that it was seeking a company to manage its planned Peckham Palms development, which it hopes will be a hub for make-up artists, manicurists and hair stylists, as well as other independent traders.

Councillor Mark Williams, Southwark Council cabinet member for regeneration, said: “We want to not only make sure the businesses relocating to Peckham Palms get the full business and marketing support they need to get their customers to move with them, but also to help them grow and for the area to become the number one spot for afroCaribbean hair and beauty in London.”

‘Cycle Quietway’ to be redesigned after residents say it will create traffic jams

PLANS FOR a ‘cycle quietway’ through Bermondsey Street will be changed after residents claimed it would cause traffic jams on the already busy road.

The original plans for the Quietway, a scheme to create “safer spaces” with fewer buses and lorries for cyclists between Blackfriars Road and Tower Bridge Road, proposed eastbound-only traffic on Leathermarket and Morocco Streets and westbound-only on Tanner Street.

Residents and Liberal Democrat councillors complained that this would cause “all traffic to converge at the intersection with Bermondsey Street” and add to “traffic congestion in an already busy road”.

TfL and the council have now announced that they will respond to the community’s concerns, with proposals that one-way traffic will

now be westbound on Morocco and Leathermarket Streets and eastbound on Tanner Street, dispersing traffic away from Bermondsey Street.

Liberal Democrat councillor for Grange ward, Damian O’Brien, said: “Since last November Southwark

Council and Transport for London have been consulting on the introduction of this Quietway.

“The original design had traffic converging from different directions into the Bermondsey Street junction which would have caused gridlock at

this already congested point.

“Liberal Democrats and residents around Bermondsey Street are delighted that common sense has now prevailed and that the new oneway system will disperse traffic rather than force it on to

Bermondsey Street.

“These changes will make living and working in the area much more pleasant with better air quality, less traffic and less noise. It will also put an end to the infuriating rat-running that we have to endure at the moment, as well as make cycling easier and safer.

“It has taken nine months of discussions with the council and TfL to achieve this result but Liberal Democrats have been determined to fight residents’ corner. It was a real battle to get this change but the fight was worth it in the end.”

Southwark Council will now consult residents on the amended design.

A council spokesperson, said: “The community raised concerns about some aspects of the proposed route.

We listened, accepted the concerns and amended the scheme.”

The News contacted TfL, but received no reply by the time of going to press.

DOZENS OF close friends and family came to the Blue in Bermondsey on Friday, July 15, to put to rest young Bermondsey dad, Jack Wells.

The community saw tens of cars and a horse drawn carriage come down the high street on their way to Honor Oak crematorium.

Jack, 23, lost his battle with cancer on June 27 under the care of St Christopher’s Hospice, Sydenham.

He spent his last months fundraising to make memories with his threeyear-old daughter Scarlett, but passed away before fulfilling them all.

Jack was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone disease, at the start of 2015 after finding a lump on his shoulder.

Jack’s dad, Charles, paid tribute to him at the well-attended service, saying how his two loves were Scarlett and cars.

He said: “This should be the other way around. Jack was a father, a son, a brother, nephew, cousin and friend.

He was born in Camberwell and moved to Bermondsey, where he became a true Bermondsey boy.

“His true love was Scarlett.

Everyone warmed to him and we all loved him in our own special way. He always kept his sense of humour and I once said to him that he could be stubborn now that he’s ill, and he replied ‘like father like son’.

“His second love was his cars. He took after his granddad when looking after his cars. He didn’t want to take his mates to the seaside once because of the mess they would have made!

Jack lived his life with enjoyment. I am sure we will always have memories of Jack. Jack, you will be loved for eternity and will never be forgotten.”

Jack’s stepdad, George White, said: “He was always cheeky and a mummy’s boy. He was kind and caring and very lovable. Jack was a wonderful father, who did everything he could for Scarlett.

“Jack loved life and he lived life to the full. Even when he was diagnosed

A BOROUGH architecture firm’s design for the proposed Rotherhithe bridge to Canary Wharf has won the New London Architecture Peoples’ Choice Award.

Beating more than 300 other entries, reForm and Elliot Wood have been at the front of promoting the bridge, which would allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the river without using the Tube or roads.

Man stabbed after withdrawing money from Rye Lane cash machine PECKHAM

A 36-year-old was stabbed at the Aylesham Shopping Centre in Rye Lane during an attempted robbery on July 13.

The incident took place at about 4.40pm, after the victim went to withdraw cash from a bank in Rye Lane.

Inspector Kelvin Robins, who attended the incident, said: “Initial investigations suggests that the victim had withdrawn money from a nearby bank and had just returned to his car when he was attacked.

“The attacker fled with the money and left in a vehicle, believed to be a Volvo.”

The News learnt on Monday that the victim was in a stable condition and shortly due to be discharged from hospital. “[The victim’s] injuries don't appear life threatening,” Inspector Robins said.

“But, as with any knife injury, a matter of millimetres difference could have

A London Air Ambulance landed at the bus garage in Peckham High Street to take the victim to hospital.

Possession orders adjourned in water bill arrears cases

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has begun contacting 40,000 tenants to whom it will refund £28.6m for overcharged water bills between 2001 and 2013.

Fifty-three possession orders have been adjourned for properties whose tenant had fallen into water-bill arears.

The urgent measures to refund current and former tenants has been the fallout of a legal challenge brought

by Camberwell resident Kim Jones, which the council lost in April.

It was ruled by His Honour, Mr Justice Newey, that a long-standing deal between the council and Thames Water had been illegal. This was because the council had been overcharging residents for water bills, while collecting payments on Thames Water’s behalf.

The authority will now find £28.6m to refund tenants who were billed for water services between April 1, 2001, and July 28, 2013.

The council has also said a letter has

been sent to the Judiciary at Lambeth County Court outlining the case, and its implications to the council’s possession proceedings.

Figures for the largest-possible refunds have also been published. For example the maximum refund for someone who was the bill payer of a three-bed flat for the entire twelve years will be entitled to up to £1,878.50.

The council’s cabinet member for housing, councillor Stephanie Cryan, said: “I am pleased with the progress we have made in issuing refunds to our tenants and ask for patience while the process completes. We will be dealing with each of the 53 currently adjourned possession orders on a case-by-case basis.”

HISTORIANS HAVE released this image of an unknown WW1 soldier and his family in an attempt to find out who they are.

Green re-opens CROWDS FLOCKED to Camberwell Green last weekend, when it was re-opened after a £1m makeover.

The park now has a new play area, a new market square, a bigger lawn, new

lighting and furniture, and feature walls at the entrances.

The Green was spruced up as part of the area’s £13m regeneration project, launched in 2012, which includes a new library and square.

The unknown soldier is pictured with two small girls with their mother, and his uniform bears no distinguishing details.

Embossed across the bottom of the picture is the name and address of the photographer’s studio that produced it: E. C. Watling / 33, Jamaica Road. / Bermondsey S.E. [London]’.

On the back is printed details ‘British Made’ and ‘935’.

The First World War Centenary Partnership, which is making the appeal, is delivering a global programme of events and activities inspiring young and old to connect with the lives, stories and impact of the First World War. The partnership is led by the Imperail War Museum.

PLANS TO demolish the Southwark Park café have been criticised by the Friends of Southwark Park, with calls for it to be turned into community space instead.

While the Friends are happy with the proposals for a new café, they have said it would be “short sighted” of the council to pull the current one down, and have started a petition.

The council have said they cannot afford to both build a new café and

maintain the current one.

Patrick Kingwell, The Friends of Southwark Park secretary, said: “We are very pleased that Southwark Council is going to build a much-needed new cafe in Southwark Park. However, this good news is spoiled by the proposal to demolish the existing café.

“We believe that the current building is far from derelict and with a little investment and tender loving care could be put to useful park purposes.

“It could be a space for local schools and children’s groups when they visit the park; a centre for our bee and other park projects; and a space where we could put

on a free access permanent display about the history of Southwark Park.”

Councillor Maisie Anderson, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health, Parks and Leisure, said: “We welcome any feasible suggestions on how we can keep the old café building. Unfortunately, we cannot afford to do this ourselves, having already

committed a £5.4m in investment to the new athletics track, new café and bringing the old nursery site back into use. The only way to retain the building would be to find a future use that can cover its own costs. We’ve discussed this issue with the Friends’ group already and look forward to hearing their ideas on a sustainable option for the building.”

A GROUPof Rotherhithe residents is campaigning to save the old red crane on Odessa Street, after it was confirmed it will be demolished to make way for a housing development.

The proposed development by Hollybrook Homes would see the crane scrapped and recycled as a sculpture by Surrey Docks Farm’s artist Kevin Boys, to sit by the Thames.

The group are opposing the plans, claiming that it would be a “loss of history” for the area, as it dates back to the early 1900s.

Andy Gibson, one of the residents, said that the development would mean the loss of community space too, including a playground, which he said is still used despite its rundown appearance.

The residents have started a petition calling for the crane to be preserved, so far attracting more than 360 signatures.

Hollybrook Homes said that they explored ways to include the crane in the development over the past eighteen months, but due to it falling into disrepair in recent years it wasn’t deemed viable.

Justin Elcombe, managing director of Hollybrook Homes, said: “Unfortunately over many years the condition of the crane has deteriorated to the point that it is beyond repair and has become a health and safety hazard.

In the wake of Brexit: housing, racism and attendance allowance

T

HE WEEKS following the result of the EU referendum have been a tumultuous time.

It is a horrible shame that, despite voting overwhelmingly to remain in the European Union, people in Southwark are already witnessing job losses and local companies are facing a less secure future.

We’ve also seen a spike in hate crimes with people being told to ‘go home’ despite many being born here or contributing locally. I attended the Citizens UK London Bridge demonstration to tackle racism and encourage people to report incidents. I also met with Southwark Secondary Headteachers and this issue was raised and I’d welcome hearing your experiences too.

The problem came up when I hosted twelve local clergy in Parliament recently where we also discussed housing concerns and other challenges facing local congregations. A ‘praise’ of vicars may not be the collective noun but seems appropriate – and I am very grateful for their advice and prayers.

The complexity of the Brexit fallout has contributed to an intra-parliamentary crisis, with a new Prime Minister and, I hope, a new, stronger, more unifying Labour leader soon. But in the midst of the chaos, I have been holding the Government to account on housing and other priorities. I raised the chaotic and damaging supported housing policy recently which has left the council, local housing associations and constituents in limbo and unable to plan for the future as a result of the Government’s failure to understand the issue. I’ve also pressed the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions on plans to abolish Attendance Allowance for new claimants from 2017.

This support helps older disabled people and almost 2,000 receive it in Bermondsey and Old Southwark alone.

Bin collection at all time high

I WRITE in reply to Lorna Morrison’s letter (Southwark News, 14th July, 2016) concerning domestic waste collection.

Unfortunately Ms Morrison has given no detail of the address where the problem has occurred so if she were to provide to me directly the detail for whatever address it is I can get on and investigate what happened?

It is certainly the first time I have heard that collections have been missed for three weeks. If this has happened as stated it is most likely due to locked gates with no keys provided by a landlord.

For your readers’ information I can advise that our Veolia contract ‘missed waste collection’ rates are currently at an historic low.

Also, in the recent resident surveys (Wave 11, June 2016) the satisfaction levels for refuse collection were very high at 83%.

Ms Morrison also objects to the charging for bulky waste collection.

The £16 charge recently introduced is lower than most London councils (who have had them for years), and it enables more items to be collected, so remains very good value by comparison.

The income from payments (from about 8% of residents utilising the service) enables the council in the face

of Government cuts to protect other vital services that people value the most.

I would have thought as a previous Conservative Party Parliamentary Candidate for Camberwell & Peckham Ms Morrison would have been aware of her own Government’s policies and welcomed our initiative?

THE CEA card is a national card scheme developed by the Cinema Exibition Association (CEA) for UK cinemas.

This scheme was introduced in 2004 and is one of the ways for participating cinemas to ensure they make reasonable adjustments for when disabled guests go to the cinema.

The CEA cards are accepted in approximately 90% of cinemas in the UK and allows the cardholder to obtain one complimentary ticket for a person to go along with them and provide assistance required as a result of the cardholders’ disability during their visit to the cinema. The complimentary ticket can be obtained provided that a full price ticket is purchased by the cardholder for the same film and auditorium.

The person applying for the a card should be in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) Attendance Allowance (AA); Blind Person’s Registration; Personal Independence Payment (PIP); or Armed Forces Independence Payment and proof of eligibility will be needed to support an application. Note the eligibility criteria are kept under review and maybe updated from time to time.

HEN WAS the last time you got out of breath?

Being out of breath when you have just run for the bus or taken part in sport or exercise is normal and healthy. But if you are finding you get breathless doing things that you used to be able to do more easily, don’t ignore it, tell your GP. Despite the impact that breathlessness can have on daily living, doctors often find that patients compensate for it by making changes to how they live and they don’t even mention it during consultations.

Breathlessness or having a cough for three weeks or more could be a sign of conditions such as lung disease, lung cancer and heart failure so it is important that anyone experiencing these symptoms tells their GP. The GP will be able to examine and test the patient, diagnose the problem and if necessary start treatment. Earlier diagnosis has the potential to save lives and improve the quality of life of those living with lung conditions or heart disease.

Difficulty breathing can make people anxious and anxiety can also make it harder to breath. If this is something you experience, tell your GP as they can help.

It is estimated that in England there are around 80,000 undiagnosed cases of lung cancer, one million cases of the lung condition Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and 600,000 undiagnosed cases of coronary heart disease – which means approximately 1.7 million people living undiagnosed with these conditions.

returns to the Lyric Theatre with their vibrant musical attempt at bringing the globally successful Gruffalo storybook to life on stage. The production premiered in London in 2001 and is now returning after a global tour.

Its cast: Steve McCourt as the Gruffalo and narrator, Charlie Guest as the slightly oddly characterized predators, and Ellie Bell as the squeaky mouse make an energetic and cheerful company. There are plenty of jokes, 90s Brit Pop musical interludes and some 'He's behind you!' interaction. Owl's military regalia and Fox's Cockney charm are enjoyable, and The Gruffalo’s final appearance and costume are well worth the wait.

However, the set is largely an oversight. It looks disappointingly bland and with little more than simplistic trees, it does nothing to evoke the magical realm of the deep, dark wood.

The road of kings, rebellions and the ha’penny bumper

AS SOUTHWARK Council starts consulting on plans for the Old Kent Road, bringing huge change to the area and starting a new chapter in its famous story, it’s worthwhile looking into its past to see who has graced the historic route from its beginning to today, writes Alex Yeates…

The road started to take form in the Roman times as a military route, roughly following the route of the Roman’s Watling Street – a route used by soldiers to travel from the Roman ports of Richborough and Dover, and the city of Canterbury to the city of Londinium.

As time went on and the Empire crumbled, pilgrims started to travel along the Old Kent Road to the shrine of former Archbishop Thomas a Becket in Canterbury, often gathering at the Tabard, one of the famous inns of Borough High Street. A usual first stop for the pilgrims was a stream, Saint Thomas-a-Watering, located by the modern Thomas a Becket pub.

Prince and King Henry V returning via the road from their victories in France, with deputations of leading citizens meeting them at the St Thomas-a-Watering.

Come 1660, King Charles II returned for his restoration by landing at Dover and making his way to London, with his cavalcade spreading over the green spaces on the west of the present day Old Kent Road.

Famous rebels also entered London through this route. In 1381 Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasant’s Revolt, marched his followers from Canterbury to London in opposition to a poll tax, and Jack Cade in 1451 leading his rebellion against King Henry VI. Other rebels such as John Penry, a religious fanatic, was executed at St Thomas-a-Watering on the road in 1593. The location being popular with executions till around 1740.

Until 1750, the old London Bridge was the only crossing of the river in London, leading to travellers coming from Kent Road to the city

via Kent Street, which is now known as Tabard Street, and the busy high street of Southwark. In 1565, Kent Street was paved with hard stone as far as Stones End near the present flyover. An Act of 1765 saw the Commissioners for Paving, Cleansing and Lighting established for the streets of Southwark, and appointments of Watchmen.

In the 18th century main roads underwent massive improvement with new road building methods introduced by the Turnpike Trusts, an initiative to upkeep sections of roads. Each trust installed tollgates and collected money from roadusers for maintenance. By 1865 tollgates were abolished and the Kent Road was called the Old Kent Road to distinguish it from the New Kent Road.

In the late 18th and early 19th century came the golden-era of coaching. Better roads meant regular stage-coach services worked reasonably well and there operated a service between the city, the West End, and the villages of

Peckham and Camberwell. From 1784 coaches carrying mail were introduced, sometimes reaching speeds of eleven miles per hour, replacing traditional post boys on horseback.

During the Victorian era of the 19th century, the population of Southwark rapidly grew, replacing fields with streets and housing. The surge of people crowded Borough and the Elephant and Castle, leading to the start of traffic accidents. But despite the prosperity of the Victorian age, poverty affected many residents.

The Old Kent Road slowly stopped becoming the home of well-to-do people, but the shopping streets of working-class neighbourhoods.

The Old Kent Road saw the first horse-tram lines laid in 1871 for a service between Blackheath and Blackfriars Bridge, and in Walworth Road for a service to Camberwell Green. Till 1913 the ‘ha’penny bumper’, a one-horse single-decker, travelled along from the Old Kent Road via Rotherhithe

New Road to Raymouth Road, allowing public transport access to working people.

It was during the Victorian era that the Old Kent Road gained the character for which it is fondly thought of today. Knocked’em in the Old Kent Road was a music hall comedy song written by actor Albert Chevalier in 1891, which told the story of a family who lived in an alley near the Old Kent Road, and is still sang today. Pub-life was also forged in those times and in 1874 there were eighteen in under two miles.

In 1896 motor cars started to appear on the roads and in 1904 Tilling’s, a bus company, made the decision to switch from horses to motor buses. In the same year, electric trams replaced horse-trams on the Old Kent Road, serving London until July 1952.

The Old Kent Road still stands today as an important high street, providing thousands of homes for Southwark and creative spaces for artists. Boasting a rich history of rebels, kings, pubs and Romans, it is cemented as a piece of London’s history.

IT’S ALWAYS good to get invited out for a beer and even more so when it’s Meantime Brewery doing the inviting, Michael Holland...

The Greenwich brewers were one of the first of what is now a huge industry and were the trendsetters when they first began making beer sixteen years ago.

Now, established as experts in the game, they are making the time to try different things with the skills they have, to bring something new to the supping public.

And so, with their Pilot Series of limited edition beers now and up and running the media were invited along to taste the new ales, as well as plenty of the old favourites.

I went along with Paul Brown as he keeps me on the right path and because he loves a good beer. We met in the Meantime bar where every tap is a Meantime ale, so all good there. After a London Pale Ale we were led through to the Tasting Room where the entertaining is done. The entertaining comes from Alexis, one of the tour guides there -a jovial fellow, all hale and hearty with an extensive knowledge of the beers, their history and production process; the tasting comes from the casks and bottles we were surrounded by.

Cieran Giblin, Meantime’s Master Brewer, got our attention and introduced the first beer we tasted which had the odd name of Hop, Collaborate and Listen. A fruity Olicana Pale Ale of 4% Vol made from a new hop created by some beer scientist messing about in the lab. It was okay but lacked that stand out taste that makes you go, “Oooh yer”.

Chatting with Cieran we found that he had been to university to study brewing and had been at Meantime for five years. The word he uses most in his conversation seems to be the word ‘fun’.

This is his ideal job and he enjoys what he does, playing around with recipes and trying different things on the way to creating a good beer. He told us that the small batch Pilot Series are to see what people like and help decide which ones could go into larger production.

A buffet of good pub grub was provided, a veritable feast of pork pie, Scotch Egg, liver pâté and pickles - all homemade by the chef in their pub/restaurant, plus big pink prawns and cheese. I must give a mention to the Scotch Egg that had a Black Pudding outer and a runny egg inner, and was delicious.

As we nibbled and discussed the ale and fare Cieran called us in again to hear about the White Bear, a Berliner Weiss

beer(4.5%) that would be perfect for sunny days in a beer garden. It is pale and misty with a light head and a cool, refreshing, citrussy tang to it.

We were told to drink as much of it as we liked, so we did. Cieran told us it goes well with the pâté, and it did. It also went well with the pork pie and piccalilli, the prawns, pâté…

While watching Mr Brown get in a state trying to peel his prawns Alexis came over to discuss us, himself and the Meantime beers - about which he knows just about everything. It was Alex that got us thinking of clear blue skies while sipping a White Bear even while we could hear the thunder and lightning storm raging outside over

Greenwich. He got us trying the Cali Pale Ale (his current favourite), the Yakima Red, and a London Lager, and the Cali Pale Ale was well worth a return visit…

Before long Cieran was introducing the 4.8% Hop Back, a mild made from an old Manchester recipe. This was malty and nice, and after a couple I thought it the best of the three new offerings.

With early starts for my companion and myself we decided, with heavy hearts, to leave the event, but with promises made to return soon.

Brewery Tours with Tastings are described as “one part stand up comedy, one part history lesson, one part science

lesson, and one part going down the pub!” And with Big Al guiding you through it is well worth the visit.

Meantime beer is available in many outlets now, and with so many to choose from you can never get bored by sampling them all. And at their Meantime Bar you won’t get it much fresher.

Tours are at Meantime Brewery Bar and Visitor Centre, Blackwall Lane, SE10 0AR. Tours last two hours and run from Monday-Friday at 7pm, Saturday every 90 minutes from 12 noon, and Sunday at 12noon and 2pm.

Admission: £20 per person, £17.50 (Monday-Thursday and Sunday).

Surrey legend marks anniversary

S

urrey legend Adam Hollioake recently returned to the Kia Oval to mark the tenth anniversary of the ground’s Ben Hollioake Learning Centre.

Hollioake, based on the Gold Coast but in England for the summer, came into the centre to see it in action before attending a special Awards Ceremony that celebrated the centre’s first decade and honoured the children who have been attending classes in the last term.

The centre was built as part of the OCS Stand and named after Surrey and England all-rounder Ben Hollioake, who was tragically killed in a car accident in March 2002. Over the course of the last ten years it has provided after school activities for over 3,000 pupils from a host of Lambeth primary schools, using the Kia Oval as inspiration to help them with core curriculum topics such as Maths, English and Computing.

The Ben Hollioake Centre is sponsored by global property specialists and club partners Savills, who were also in attendance on the day.

said: “Ben and I used to compete at everything – he’s done alright because he’s got the Learning Centre named after him and I’ve just got a dodgy picture in the Long Room!

Surrey CCC Chief Executive Richard Gould also spoke at the ceremony, expressing his thanks to the staff that run the centre and the local schools who use it every week.

“We’re really proud to have the Ben Hollioake Learning Centre at the Kia Oval”, said Gould. “Ben was a huge part of our club and to honour him in such a positive way is something we’re still very pleased about.

“This centre allows us to be part of our community, inviting children from local Lambeth schools to come and experience the ground and realise there is a world-class sporting facility on their doorstep. If we can use our stadium to help inspire children and facilitate their learning then that can only be a good thing.”

FORTY FIVE primary school pupils from Southwark made a big splash when they took part in the annual Peabody swimming gala.

Six schools, English Martyrs, Michael Faraday, St Peter’s, Victory, St John’s and Townsend sent pupils along to the housing association’s pool in Darwin Court, Walworth.

Event organiser Zahed Abedipour said: “At Darwin Court, we believe strongly in providing access to swimming facilities for children in the local area.

“Swimming is a life-saving skill and one of the most effective

exercises for physical well-being.

“Hosting this gala was part of Darwin Court's effort to encourage more swimming activities within the local area, as well as to reward children with the thrill of competition for all their hard work in their swimming classes.”

Students who took part were aged between six and twelve, and the event was part of the housing association’s community commitments.

Lionesses still waiting for win

MILLWALL LIONESSES long wait for a win is still ongoing after they fell to a 3-1 defeat away at Aston Villa Ladies on Sunday.

The Lionesses have now gone nine games without picking up three points, although four of those contests did end up in a draw.

On Sunday Millwall got off to a perfect start when Grace Fisk gave them the lead after just two minutes of the contest.

But by the break the Villains had turned around that deficit thanks to a brace of goals from Beth Merrick.

In the second half sub Grace Smith added a third goal for the home side, ending a six game win less streak for Villa but extending the Lionesses run of disappointing results.

After the game the Lionesses Rinsola Babajide told the club website: “We definitely deserved something, it's a game we should have won but we need to finish off our chances."

DULWICH CRICKET Club returned to winning ways last weekend by picking up an eight wicket win away at Epsom.

The home side elected to bat on the day and soon lost opener Ben Hudson who was bowled by Jon Lodwick with just two on the board.

After recovering to 96/4 the home sides batting order then collapsed with the final six wickets falling with just 134 runs set as a target.

Ed Stollele led the Dulwich wicket takers with four wickets for fourteen runs, with Leon Sealy and Alexander Gledhill also picking up a brace of wickets.

In reply Dulwich openers Stolle and Tom Savill put on a fine stand of 70 before Stolle fell with 42 runs to his name.

Although Ed Towner then fell for a duck Savill, who ended undefeated on 78, and William Bancroft, eleven not out, eased Dulwich past the winning post to secure 24 points for the win.

A MILLWALL supporter who took on Manchester City after they refused him entry to their ground has urged other fans “to not give up” if they feel they have been unfairly treated by football clubs.

Nick Weavis, a 65-year-old retired schoolteacher, was left standing in the rain with his friend Mike King, and Mike’s two sons Ben (20) and Jimi (13), after a cashier at the Premier League club refused to sell them tickets to the clash with Swansea last December 12.

The group had travelled north to attend Millwall’s fixture with Oldham at Boundary Park before it was rained off shortly before kick-off.

With over four hours to kill before their train back to London, they decided to take in the Premier League fixture in Manchester. However, when it became apparent they were Millwall fans, they weren’t allowed to purchase match tickets.

“We didn’t have any single identifying gear on whatsoever,” Nick told the News.

“We had our winter gear on and we were absolutely drenched.

“We got to the ticket office and to get the cashier’s sympathy we told her we’d hot-footed it over from Boundary Park because our match had been called off.

That’s the only time they would have had any indication that we were Millwall supporters.”

Mike had wanted the group to sit together, as Ben is autistic. The cashier disappeared for 60 seconds before returning to inform them they would not be sold tickets based on police advice.

Nick said: “When I got home I thought about it and I spoke to a couple of mates and said ‘I’m not having this, I’m going to follow this up.’”

Nick complained to City, who refused to budge. Annoyed by their attitude he then contacted Millwall chief executive, Andy Ambler, who referred him to the Football Supporters’ Federation.

Through the FSF, the Independent Football Ombudsman became involved, while a Freedom of Information request, sent by a Manchester City season-ticket holder who is a friend of Mike’s, revealed the Greater Manchester Police had not given the advice cited.

The IPO last week upheld Nick’s complaint, stating: “the Club’s handling...could have been much better.

complainant’s disappointment regarding what had happened, when he was seeking no more than an apology, might well have concluded the matter”. It added it was “wrong in attributing the refusal of entry to police advice” and that the Premier League, who also became involved, “sympathised with the complainant and pointed out that the club’s response lacked empathy”.

Nick, from Peckham, has been attending Millwall games since 1963 and has missed just one match in the last two years – at Scunthorpe last season when he was attending his friend’s 70th birthday.

Nick said he had never been refused entry to a football stadium before, but admitted there is a stigma attached to being a fan of the Lions. “When you say you’re a Millwall supporter you’re on the back foot and you’ve got to defend yourself.

“For many years I was defensive about it but for the last 20 years I thought, ‘No, I am a Millwall supporter and most of us are brilliant’. Rod Liddle, of the Sunday Times, is a Millwall fan, so we’re not all thick! That was a clear taste of discrimination, and the stereotypical image of us being unwelcome.

“We were just four people who wanted

to see a Premier League game. The kids don’t get the chance – we’re taking them to places like bloody Rochdale!

“Anyone with any jot of common sense would have looked at four normal people standing there in torrential rain and let us is.”

Nick praised the support of the FSF’s Amanda Jacks throughout a process that began last January. The IFO, meanwhile, recommended “that the Premier League consider including in their guidance suitable arrangements to cater for casual visitors”. The League is currently assessing those types of purchases.

The story had a happy ending of sorts.

Although Nick is still waiting for an apology from Manchester City, he returned to Boundary Park to watch Millwall defeat Oldham 2-1 in the refixed game in January. City have also offered them complementary tickets to a future game.

Nick, who said “Millwall fans have been 100 per cent supportive” of his position, had some advice for football supporters: “Don’t give up even if you get treated (badly) everywhere you go.

Keep going if you feel you’re in the right, if you feel you’ve got a justified case.

Keep pushing and knocking on doors and see where it gets you.”

MILLWALL DEBUTED their new home strip and their three summer signings at a roasting Hayes Lane last Saturday.

Lions boss Neil Harris’ only complaint afterwards was that his side hadn’t roasted the hosts, but they still ran out comfortable 2-1 winners.

Last season Tony Craig’s lastminute own goal resulted in a 2-2 draw at Bromley, but a year on this side is much more integrated and sure of how Harris wants it to function.

Harris gave first public starts to centre-back Shaun Hutchinson and winger David Worrall, while Gregg Wylde was among eleven substitutions who came on just after the 60-minute mark.

It was two familiar faces who did the damage for Millwall. Fred Onyedinma opened the scoring in the third minute, heading home after Worrall had displayed his dead-ball prowess with an excellent cross.

However, a mistake from Sid Nelson in the 25th minute, when his header back towards David Forde was short, allowed Tobi Sho-Silva in for an equaliser.

Nelson showed last season he is prone to those types of mistakes, but he will hope he leaves that habit behind with pre-season.

by Rotherham to prise him away, put Millwall back in front when he finished Ben Thompson’s cross low past Alan Julian into the corner.

Harris changed his entire side in the 62nd minute. Wylde was one of those who was introduced and he almost set up a third but Jamie Philpot headed wide from the Scottish winger’s cross.

Harris is likely to keep rotating until the home game with Brentford, when a clearer picture of what he sees as his starting XI should emerge.

MILLWALL CONTINUED their fine start to pre-season with a 3-0 win over Dartford at Princes Park on Tuesday evening.

Lions boss Neil Harris rung the changes against the National League South outfit with seven new players in his starting XI from the win over Bromley on Saturday.

It was a cagey opening with the Lions dominating possession as Dartford played a 4-1-4-1 system, allowing

Millwall’s back line to have time and space on the ball to dictate the play.

After just four minutes, Shaun Williams - who as one of the changes from Saturday - hit a free-kick towards goal but it was tipped behind for a corner by Darts keeper Deren Ibrahim.

The visitors, however, took the lead on ten minutes with their second foray on goal.

Fred Onyedinma made it two goals in two games with a fine solo effort.

Onyedinma, who was deployed up front with Aiden O’Brien, surged forward before feigning right, then going left to find space and slot the ball into the bottom left-hand corner of the net from the edge of the box.

Eight minutes later the Lions’ lead was doubled when this time Onyedinma turned provider after winning the ball in the middle of the park.

He advanced towards Dartford’s penalty box Onyedinma before finding

O’Brien free to his right. O’Brien then proceeded to cut in on his left foot before dispatching a low shot that found the same corner as the game’s opening goal.

Much like in Saturday’s win Harris made eleven changes halfway through the second half, with a youthful team continuing to press the home side over the final 30 minutes.

Tom King, who was a substitute for Lions keeper Jordan Archer, wasn't tested by Dartford, only needing to be alert gather up loose balls before setting up more Millwall attacking moves.

Forward Jamie Philpot looked bright as did fellow second-half substitute Kris Twardek, with both combining well for the Lions’ third that wrapped up a second straight victory of preseason.

Philpot started the attack when he tackled Dartford’s Tom Bonner before the ball ricocheted down the line and into the path Twardek. The winger

played a square ball from wide into the box for the striker to smash home into the opposite corner of the goal from close range to seal the victory.

Dartford rarely threatened, Albert Jarrett firing two efforts high and wide of the Millwall. Otherwise Millwall saw the game out comfortably in the Kent heat.

After the win, Lions boss Harris spoke to the assembled media to reveal he was pleased once again with the overall display in tricky conditions.

Harris said after the 3-0 win: “I thought it was a good, solid performance. It was a completely different test for us, with their 4-1-4-1 formation and letting us have the ball a lot.

“It was a difficult challenge for the players in the first half because of the sun being so low.

“We were aggressive with our play early on and some of the football was really good. The goals were top quality.

It was a really good workout for us.

“Aiden was disappointed at half-time, he could've had three or four goals. His work rate was good, his technique was good, but the finishing sharpness will come over the course of pre-season.

“I was delighted with Fred tonight, I thought he was exceptional. Him and James Brown at right-back were outstanding.”

Abdou wants to pen new chapter

JIMMY ABDOU has said that Millwall will “start a new book” this season, as they look to banish the demons of May's play-off final defeat to Barnsley.

The Lions enjoyed a successful campaign last year after relegation from the Sky Bet Championship, but fell foul of the Tykes in the League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium, losing 3-1.

However, Abdou, about to embark on his eighth season at The Den, insisted the defeat has been mentally consigned to the past and that the club should be looking forward.

Abdou said: “Last season and Wembley has gone now. It was a big disappointment, but we are professional, we are looking forward to new games and new wins.

“We're just looking forward now. It's a new start, a new season. We have some new lads coming in trying to help us. We're looking forward to doing the same as last season, and hopefully it'll all go well.

“It's time to start a new book, start a new story. What we did last season, we did well. We now have to use that this season to help us to do the same or even better.”

Along with the likes of David Forde and Tony Craig, the midfielder has been in this situation before – the Lions lost the League One play-off final to Scunthorpe United in 2009, but returned to Wembley the following year to atone for the defeat, this time against Swindon Town.

between the squads.

“There are different players, different qualities,” Abdou said. “I was one of the youngest in previous times, but now I'm one of the oldest.

We have some good young players that came through last year, and hopefully there'll be more this coming season.

“I'm happy with talking to everyone, so the young players can come to me for advice. I ask some of the other senior players for advice, too. We all have a good relationship, that'll help us this season.”

forgiven for thinking that the Den stalwart is entering the twilight of his career. However, Abdou revealed that he plans to continue playing for the moment, but has thought about a future after that career ends.

“I'm 32 now. I'm going to try and start my badges this year. I'd like to help others. At the minute, though, I'm focussed on my football. We'll see what the future holds.”

And future Lions boss?

“Millwall manager? Why not! It's not my plan at the minute, but you never know in football. It's too far away to think about."

Romeo enjoys a little help from his friends

A LITTLE over five months ago, he was scoring on his debut for Millwall in a 3-0 win against promotion rivals Walsall. Now, Mahlon Romeo is currently in the middle of his first pre-season campaign as a first-team regular with the Lions.

It has been somewhat of a meteoric rise for the 20-year-old defender, who this time last year was training with the academy all set for the Lions’ U21 campaign.

This summer, however, expectation levels among Millwall fans are much higher, with Romeo coming off the back of an impressive first six months

as a right-back, a position the defender is rapidly making his own.

But if it weren’t for Carlos Edwards and Shaun Cummings picking up long-term injuries, Romeo may not have had a lookin last season.

Every cloud has a sliver lining and the defender is grateful he was able to take his opportunity, and he also took the opportunity to learn from his fellow defenders prior to making his competitive debut. Romeo revealed Edwards is still a sounding board despite having left the club in the summer.

“It's been a crazy period of time,” Romeo said. “I've just tried to remain focussed and take each match as it comes.

“I was lucky enough to sit and watch Carlos and Shaun. I learned from them and they helped me in the lead-up to my debut. They still help me with advice now, too.

“It has been a tough pre-season compared to last year. But the boys help you through it and you come away feeling fresh.

“I don't really like the heat, but pre-season has been great so far.”

Romeo’s dream start to his Lions career ended, however, on a low.

The defender was shown a straight red card in the final league game against his former club Gillingham.

After an appeal had been rejected he missed both play-off semi-final legs and the League One play-off final at Wembley last May.

But Romeo is quick to emphasise his and the squad’s determination to make sure that history isn't repeated at the end of next season.

“It was gutting to miss out on the play-offs through suspension,” Romeo reflected. “Unfortunately, though, that's part and parcel of football. It happens. You just have to pick yourself up and go again.

“It's about the team next season, not me.

“Personally, my main goal last season was to be as close to the first team as possible. Whether that was in the first team or on the bench, that was my objective.

“Now we have to keep Wembley in the back of our minds as motivation to gain automatic promotion.”

MILLWALL HAVE finally taken Folkestone Invicta striker Harry Smith on a one-week trial.

The 6ft 6ins frontman (pictured, inset) was due to train with the Lions at the beginning of preseason, but a back injury temporarily put paid to that, as well as his involvement in Folkestone's friendly matches.

The 20-year-old joined Invicta shortly before Christmas 2015, and his subsequent form has alerted a

number of English Football League sides, including Millwall and Justin Edinburgh's Gillingham.

Smith finished Folkestone's Isthmian League Division One South championship-winning season in 2015-16 with a goal ratio of almost a one a game.

Millwall have a rich history with regards to picking strikers from nonleague football – most notably manager Neil Harris, who arrived from Cambridge City in 1998, and current striker Lee Gregory, who was bought by Ian Holloway in a £250,000 deal in 2014 from Halifax.

Speaking to the News, Harris said: “Harry came in from Folkestone Invicta on trial (Monday).

“He's going to have a week with us

and we'll hopefully get him into a game. We've seen him play a few times and he's been flagged up by our scouts.

“We're looking for good, young players, especially local ones, that have got a chance to develop. It's early days for Harry.”

Meanwhile, Harris has also spoken about two other youngsters that have appeared in the club's opening two pre-season friendlies at Bromley and Dartford – Noah Chesmain and James Brown.

Operating at left-back and rightback respectively, the manager said that the pair were “excellent prospects”, who could feature in the first team at some point over the coming season.

Harris said: “Livers (David Livermore) and Justin Skinner know them through the U18s/21s.

They're excellent prospects for the future. They've trained really well.

They're good characters and good modern-day full-backs with good engines.

“If they're good enough, they're old enough. If I think they're ready to make the adjustment to first-team football, then I have no problem in playing them. But they have to compete regularly over the course of pre-season first.

“We don't have a big squad, so we have to make sure the youngsters are ready to compete. Looking at them in pre-season is an ideal opportunity for me.”

The likes of Kris Twardek, Kyron Farrell and Jamie Philpot impressed during the last half hour of the 3-0 friendly win over Dartford at Princes Park on Tuesday night. Manager Harris was thrilled with their performances, though he also identified areas where they can improve.

“I was delighted with the young lads,” said Harris. “When you make wholesale changes it's difficult for the young lads to come on and make a difference, but they did.

“That was Dartford's first team, who play at a really competitive level, so I was delighted with them.

“I saw some really pleasing things.

There's a lot of grey areas with them, such as communication, but that's to be expected.

“The young boys should take heart from the ones that pushed through to the first team last season, and the ones on the pitch from 60 minutes onwards have that opportunity this year.”

One young player looking to reestablish himself in the starting XI is Fred Onyedinma.

The pacey attacker was sharp against the Darts and his early goal was followed by an eye-catching display playing up front.

And Harris explained Onyedinma could offer Millwall a different threat this season: “If Fred can be an outstanding striker and an outstanding wide player, then I've got one hell of a footballer.

“It's down to me and my coaching team to develop him as a player in both positions. Aiden (O’Brien) is doing it at the moment and Fred can do it also.

“Different opposition will suit different players. Fred's got blistering pace that will trouble others.

“Last season, when Lee Gregory wasn't available or was struggling with form, I felt like I didn't have another option in attack that could get in behind (defences), so Fred gives us that option going forward.”
