THE CAMPAIGN to get an ill Bermondsey girl a computer, so she can tell her family she loves them for the first time, has smashed its target.

Thousands of pounds were raised by Millwall fans, News readers and strangers, including a mystery £3,000 donation, to help give ten-year-old Ruby Longman the chance to communicate.

Ruby suffers from the rare Rett syndrome, which has left her unable to walk or talk since she was a baby, and will now be assessed for the computer in September.

Old Kent Road: You have to be in it to win it

N ALL fairness to the council the plans for the Old Kent Road appear to be at a very early stage - with no concrete plans laid out yet apart from the two new tube stations.

In the draft Old Kent Road Area Action plan the council says this regeneration is expected to take place over the next 20 years. Residents have perhaps understandably complained that they feel they know nothing about what is happening and have concerns.

The difficulty is that at this early stage in the process residents have no drawings and plans to look at yet. The council has set down general targets of what it would hope to achieve in the area, including 20,000 new homes and 5,000 jobs. Where they will be and in what shape they take has not yet been decided. The purpose of the new wave of consultations that will be taking place in the coming months is an exercise to engage with residents and business owners to shape these generalised plans.

It is vital that people take part in shaping these plans now so that they get what they want. Unfortunately we all too often report in the Southwark News complaints from residents who feel that they are promised something very different at this early stage to what they get. However, while this might be the case you have to be in it to win it. Without getting involved you will be leaving the vision solely in the hands of planner,s who might not see what is worth keeping or properly improving in an area deemed ‘in need of regeneration’.

Dropping the ball

ORGIVE THE pun, but the council has really dropped the ball with its handling of the reopening of Fisher FC’s stadium in Rotherhithe.

For years, Fisher have had to groundshare with Dulwich Hamlet FC - miles from their spiritual homeland.

Many a small club would have gone under in such difficult circumstances, so for Fisher to be returning home should be cause for celebration.

Instead, the club have first found themselves having to tender to lease the ground, and then due to delays in the tender process, have now been informed that they have been ejected from the FA Cup and FA Vase for the upcoming season, as finishing touches that are required for the competition haven’t been carried out.

Preserving the stadium in an area of intense development was a real achievement. It’s a great shame that Fisher have been made to feel like an unwelcome afterthought.

The spy who loved swimming - Bond fave backs lido

THE MAN bookies favour to become the next 007 has lent his support to the campaign to reopen the old lido.

A ‘SPLASH Mob’ community picnic was held at the site of the former, and potentially future, Peckham Lido site on Sunday.

Just short of 100 locals turned up to enjoy the weekend sun and chill out in their trunks – all in the name of helping the Peckham Lido crowdfunding campaign.

Chris Romer-Lee, whose company organised the big picnic, said the aim was also to get a big group photo recreating a 1920s black and white photo of swimmers taken at the old lido site.

The photo, provided by a former Peckham resident, John Ellis, is believed to have been taken in 1928. John, who

was born in Peckham in 1950 and left the area in 1973, wrote to Chris to say his dad and an uncle were in the picture.

Thirty-year-old Peckham Rye resident James Norton, who starred in the BBC’s War and Peace adaptation, has appeared in a short film to voice his support for the lido’s crowdfunding project.

James, who is also second favourite on betting companies’ aggregators to become the next James Bond, said in the video: “I’m here sitting on this beautiful blue fountain which is the original fountain for the original lido.

“I’m here to support this extraordinary opportunity to have our very own lido here in Peckham – Peckham Beach. We would love you to support it too. So if you could go onto Spacehive.com, Peckham Lido, and offer what you can. See you for a dip in the near future – fingers crossed.”

Chris Romer-Lee, director of Studio Octopi, the company behind the lido project, said they got in touch with James after he made a £100 pledge of his own.

Chris said the scheme has also been backed electronic pop star Katy B, and a £7,500 boost from London mayor, Sadiq Khan. With eighteen days to reach its £64,691 target, the crowdfunding page is now at £43,853.

‘This is going to be life changing for Ruby’

THE FAMILY of an ill Bermondsey girl’s campaign to buy a computer, to help her speak to them for the first time, have smashed their target after just three months.

Ruby Longman, ten, saw donations reach the needed £10,000, but they kept going to more than £11,500, after a series of fundraising events took place to help her afford an eyegaze computer.

Ruby suffers from the rare Rett syndrome, which has prevented her from walking and talking since she was a baby, and her family now hope they will be able to talk to her once she is trained to use the computer. The machine works by enabling the user to choose words on a screen, which are then said.

A charity football match between Millwall and Charlton Athletic fans helped with the total by raising £1,141, with 157 people turning out to show their support for both the team and Ruby, leading Millwall fans onto a 7-0 win.

Simon Davis, an organiser of the match, said: “It was a superb success.

We raised a great amount and had a great result too, 7-0! Normally they beat us.

“It was a really good day all round, and the parents seemed to be overly grateful with what we did. It’s got to be some sort of struggle for them. So now I’m going

to do two events a year for them.

“For Ruby’s birthday I’m going to do collections at Millwall and another football match for her. For Christmas there will be something too for her, like this year I will do a fancy dress party.

They can do anything they want to do with it such as buy extra stuff for Ruby.”

The football match followed a

fundraising day by Alfred Salter Primary School, where Ruby is a pupil, with the mums’ alone raising more than £700. A grand total from the children is yet to be announced.

Speaking after the football match, Ruby’s mum, Timi, told the News how thankful she was for everyone’s support.

She said: “Ruby had an awesome time

Ruby is now to be assessed by the manufactures of the computer in September.

Sunbather attacked with a branch WALWORTH: Police are appealing for witnesses after a man sunbathing was thrashed with a branch and repeatedly punched in Burgess Park.

The attack took place on Saturday, July 2 at 1.50pm, when the man was disturbed from his relaxing sunbathe by another male in his thirties.

The attacker immediately began hurling punches at the sunbather’s head.

The suspect then picked up a large branch and hit the victim numerous times on the head, before calmly walking away.

The London Ambulance Service took the victim to a south London hospital where he was treated for cuts on his head and face.

The suspect is described as a black

man, with short black hair and a beard, and was wearing a black denim jacket and jeans.

Detective constable Adrian Lane, from the Southwark Community Safety Unit, said: “This was an unprovoked attack which happened during daylight hours.

There are witnesses still outstanding who could provide vital information to the investigation, and I would urge anyone with information to call me.”

Southwark has third highest rate of STIs

SOUTHWARK HAS the third highest rate of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in London, according to 2015 figures released by Public Health England (PHE).

With a rate of 2515.4 STI diagnoses per 100,000 people, the borough contributes to London having the highest rate of new STI diagnoses in England, 81 per cent higher than any other region.

Dr Yvonne Doyle, regional director for PHE London, said: “Worsening sexual health is one of the biggest public health concerns facing London and it is very worrying to see another year where STIs have increased in the capital.

“Rates of infection among young people are still increasing. We need to continue to engage with them and drive home the messages about safe sex, including using condoms, regularly being tested and avoiding overlapping sexual relationships, all of which will reduce the risk of STIs.” In recognition of the figures, along with Lewisham and Lambeth councils, Southwark Council recently helped fund a partnership between four charities to provide sexual health services.

The Rise Partnership consists of GMFA, The Race Equality Foundation, NAZ and Antidote and will help provide HIV prevention and sexual health services to minority groups.

From April 2016, services including rapid HIV testing, peer support, condom distribution and chem-sex harm reduction will be available.

Vision to make Peckham cleaner to be unveiled

PECKHAM: A strategy for how to make Peckham cleaner will be unveiled by community group, Peckham Vision at an exhibition on Tuesday, July 19.

The project is a collaboration between Peckham Vision with Rye Lane Traders’ Association and Copeland Park, who launched a joint investigation into how to keep Rye Lane litter free.

Eileen Conn, of Peckham Vision, said: “This has been an enlightening investigation. It has confirmed that working together across the town centre and with the Council is essential to begin to solve the waste management problems.”

The Cleaner Peckham Project exhibition will take place in 128 Rye Lane between 3pm and 8pm, with a meeting and discussion forum between 6.30pm and 7.30pm.

20,000 new homes and 5,000 jobs could be created

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has announced the start of a major consultation for the Old Kent Road regeneration plans, including plans to open two new Tube stations and revitalise the old Grand Surrey Canal.

The News reported in June on draft plans for the area include the potential for 20,000 new homes, 5,000 additional jobs, new schools, new parks, and two new underground stations for the extended Bakerloo line.

The plans also set out making significant improvements to the Old Kent Road itself and transforming it into a ‘green boulevard’ with better provision for buses, cyclists and pedestrians.

One other proposal the News reported on in April, is a development at Malt Street where work will be done to connect the Old Kent Road to Burgess Park via the old Grand Surrey Canal route.

Berkeley Homes announced in April plans to revive a section of the old canal route, as part of a project to build new homes and make the area more accessible.

The route is intended to incorporate art features as well as stretches of water, to remind residents of the area’s history.

The canal was officially opened in 1826 to transport timber to the Surrey Commercial Docks and was filled in the 1970s to become an industrial estate that has since shut.

There has been some concern over the general plans, however, with residents previously telling the News that they feared local people were not “engaged” enough.

Veronica Simpson, of Peckham Weeklies, said after a community meeting at the end of June: “Local people don’t seem to know anything about what is happening.

“The general feeling is hard to say, most people there know either a little or a lot, and they have concerns. One business owner pointed out how many people work in the area on the places where the council want to build.”

In order to engage residents over the plans, the consultation is being broken down into five main areas: quality new homes, revitalised neighbourhoods, cleaner greener and safer, local economy and getting around.

Southern Railway operator, Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), last week announced cancellations of 341 services and unveiled the new timetables for lines throughout London and the South East.

But it became apparent on Monday morning that the damage would be far worse for Southwark residents than expected.

Services between London Bridge and North Dulwich (stopping at East Dulwich, Peckham Rye, Queen’s Road and South Bermondsey) have been limited to only six services between 6am and 10am. Fourteen services have been cancelled.

For the journey home, there are now ten services running between London Bridge and North Dulwich, with twelve cancelled.

A GTR spokesman said on Monday that 85 per cent of services were still running as normal with the new timetable, suggesting Southwark services had been cut most severely.

The spokesman also said eighteen per cent of trains on the new timetable were not “running to time”.

Nuala Ginty, 38, said her commute on Monday was a “complete nightmare”.

Southwark Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, councillor Mark Williams, has written to the secretary of state for transport, Patrick McLoughlin, to speak on behalf of “furious” commuters.

Cllr Williams said: “It’s the equivalent of the council attempting to resolve an issue with the services our staff provide by moving to monthly waste collections or only opening schools on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

“Our residents would not put up with this, and neither should they have to put up with this inadequate and insulting service from Southern.

“I urge you to take them out of the equation immediately and pass the franchise to Transport for London as soon as possible, putting any necessary interim measures in place.”

The emergency action by GTR has been taken due to severe staff shortages.

The operator is in an ongoing battle with the Rail, Maritime and Transport trade union who have taken industrial action against the firm’s plan to start using driver-only operated trains.

Southern’s Passenger Services Director, Alex Foulds, said: “Conductors already know their jobs are guaranteed, that there will be no reduction in salary

“The driver said everyone was off sick and hadn’t come to work, so I’ve had to get busses everywhere.

“I have one friend who has had to quit his job in London because the commute is so unpredictable. Another friend further south with two small kids has moved back to London with his parents because it’s all he can do.

“I don’t know how the bosses of this company can just blame the poor drivers for wanting to protect their jobs and their right, while they get paid such massive bonuses, it’s vile.”

Jess McCabe, of Herne Hill, said on Monday:

“This morning there was almost no service when I got to North Dulwich.

and that the independent rail safety body has confirmed our plans are safe.”

FISHER FC has been ejected from the FA Cup and FA Vase for the upcoming season due to its new ground on Salter Road, Rotherhithe not meeting “essential standards”.

Despite the stadium being completed in March this year, delays in deciding a leaseholder has meant finishing touches to qualify them for the competitions remain incomplete.

According to FA guidelines, the stadium needs various essentials such as hooks and benches in the changing rooms, as well as a catering service, which are all supposed to be completed by the leaseholder.

Dan Feeney, a Fisher FC board member, said: “It is frustrating to be so close to coming home, especially having put in so much hard work as a club to secure the building of the new stadium, to find that unexpected hurdles are impacting not just on our ambitious community plans, but also on the First Team.

“We are realistic enough to accept that Fisher were not going to win the FA Cup, yet to lose the ability to play in the competition, alongside the high profile non-league FA Vase, means that significant potential revenue from prize money in these cups has disappeared.

“In better news, we can confirm that the club has lodged applications to play in the SCEFL Challenge Cup and Kent Senior Cup once again, and will be focusing our efforts on progressing in these trophies once we can start playing at home.”

Mr Feeney added that Fisher has since had “productive conversations” with Southwark Council to help smooth Fisher’s return to the north of the borough.

Prince Harry speaks with HIV specialists

PRINCE HARRY visited King’s College Hospital on July 7 to talk to leading specialists at the Trust about their work in diagnosing and treating people with HIV.

The specialists held a roundtable discussion with the Prince to discuss the issues the Trust faces, as well as national and global challenges in the fight against HIV. Raising public awareness of the ongoing challenge presented by HIV, both in the UK and around the world, is a significant priority for the Prince after he set up the charity Sentebale in 2006, to help young people with HIV in Lesotho, southern Africa.

No supermarkets allowed in plan

BOROUGH: High street supermarket chains will be banned from the Vinopolis wine complex development in Borough, after plans were approved by Southwark Council’s planning committee on Tuesday night.

It was decided that a clause in the legal agreement between the council and the developers, Sherwood Thames Ventures, would prevent big supermarket chains from setting up shop in the railway arches.

Plans for the area by Sherwood Thames Ventures, which bought the site after Vinopolis closed at the end of last year, include retail and office space, as well as a two-screen cinema and gallery.

Another condition on the planning permission is to limit the amount of floorspace for restaurants and bars to 30 per cent. Historical street names will also be revived in the development including Dirty Lane, Soap Yard and Clink Yard.

Dirty Lane will run from Clink Street through to Park Street, and the old Brew Wharf on Stoney Street will make up Soap Yard, which will connect to Dirty Lane through the railway arches.

The planning committee voted unanimously in favour of the scheme but concerns were raised about whether the new shops and restaurants would negatively impact residents nearby. It is claimed that the new scheme could create more than 1,000 jobs for the area.

Separate buildings to be created ‘off-site’ for affordable housing

A GIANT block of 421 apartments has been approved for Elephant and Castle, with zero on-site affordable housing.

Southwark Council’s planning committee voted six-to-two in favour of the two blocks, each made of three triangular towers between seven and 39 storeys tall.

Nicknamed the ‘Toblerone Towers’ by architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the £744.7m buildings will replace Skipton House on the Elephant junction’s northern edge – currently used by the Department of Health.

In its application, the developer London & Regional Properties Ltd, said 216 of the 421 flats will be twobedroom, with the rest mostly onebedroom.

At the meeting on Tuesday, campaigners spoke out against council

officers’ recommendation to approve, as it emerged that the only affordable housing will be built “off-site”.

London & Regional insist on having 80 affordable flats (20 percent of the overall development) built away from the proposed Toblerones. Salisbury Close, Manor Place and Braganza Street have been earmarked as potential sites.

Council planning policies state that large developments should provide 35 per cent ‘affordable’ housing, unless developers can reasonably claim this will reduce their profits and make a scheme unviable.

The developer set out its reasons in a viability scheme submitted to the council last week. It shows an expected profit level is £74.4m, with £16m set aside to build the 80 affordable flats elsewhere.

The development was recommended for approval by council planning officers, who had questioned the developer claim that its profit level (dependent on its office space lease from

the Department of Health) could range between a deficit of £52.3m to a surplus of £16m. “By contrast,” the council’s report said, “consultants conclude the profit surplus will range from a deficit of £1.2m to a profit surplus of £67.1m.”

However, the developer will be asked to hand over half of any excess profits to the council, who will use the money to fund its own social housing projects.

The developers has also been told the pay the council a £7.35m Community Infrastructure Levy, of which 25 per cent will be spent locally.

Jerry Flynn, of the 35% Campaign for affordable housing, said at the meeting: “We object that the applicant only provides 20 per cent affordable housing, fifteen per cent below the policy requirement of 35 per cent.

“The applicant is proposing to only fund affordable housing to the value of £16.88m. We can see no justification in settling for the low value.

“The Officer’s Report offers a Viability Review as a solution to these differences and states that the applicant will make financial payments for more affordable housing, should the viability improve.

“We do not believe this justifies accepting the low figure offered by the Applicant in the first instance.”

London & Regional will be made to sign a deal to honour these agreements

by December 16. It was also decided that the developer will not be obliged to begin construction for five years.

Failure to do either will give the council power to withdraw planning permission.

A spokesperson for London & Regional said: "We are extremely pleased to receive planning permission which will deliver over 3,000 jobs and fuel growth in Elephant & Castle.

“We are very excited that we will be presenting Elephant and Castle with its first free and publicly accessible roof garden and a new performing arts venue, which will include community outreach programmes.

“There will also be significant improvements to the public realm, with twice as many trees, more open space and improved links, such as the new 'Skipton Street' providing a new pedestrian route from Elephant Square to London South Bank University.

“In developing our proposals, we have liaised with and listened to many local residents and community groups. There has been strong support for our plans and we look forward to continuing this dialogue.”

Councillor Mark Williams, cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “The planned new development at Skipton House in Elephant and Castle will see an uninspiring office building replaced with more commercial space, a brand new cultural space, new housing and a beautiful, publicly accessible rooftop park. The benefits for the area are huge: job creation, increased business rates for the council to spend on services for local people, new homes onsite and muchneeded social rent homes provided nearby, and payments from the developer for investment in the local area.

“The design also opens up the pedestrian route into Elephant and Castle with the recreation of Skipton Street.

Although Southwark’s number one priority is delivering new affordable homes, homes alone don’t make a thriving area, and we want Elephant and Castle to function as a proper town centre and be a destination for work and leisure, as well as a great place to live.

“We would ideally like all new developments to achieve 35% affordable housing, and this is still possible with this development should profits exceed current estimates, but we should also recognise that it will bring many other benefits to the area.”

Demolition of the current site will also require the London South Bank University’s Perry Library to move, and a council-run homeless shelter in Keyworth Street to be relocated.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL will “revise plans for new homes” in Rotherhithe’s South Dock Marina, after there was opposition from residents to plans for tower blocks reaching twenty storeys in height.

Original plans for the marina involved a 213 flat development in multiple tower blocks, which residents feared would put the boatyard out of business and ruin the appeal of the area.

The Save South Dock Boatyard campaign raised £7,475 for a lawyer to challenge the plans if they went ahead, but the council have now said they will look at them again, with revised plans being presented to the public in September.

Councillor Mark Williams,

Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and New Homes, said: "In Southwark we are tackling the housing crisis head-on by building more homes of all kinds for our residents.

“At South Dock Marina we want to build new homes and a new, modern, boatyard which will secure local jobs for decades to come. By investing in the boatyard we can ensure it is able to thrive and go from strength to strength.

“We do recognise that there are genuine concerns regarding the original housing proposals, so we have asked the architects to do further work over the summer, and we hope this will balance the need for new homes and a new boatyard, and the views of local residents.

“We will be writing to all local residents and will invite them to view the revised proposals in the autumn.”

Southwark Council has maintained that the work they would carry out on

the boatyard would “enhance” it by giving it “new facilities” including “five undercover workshops and eighteen business units”.

Gary Williams, an organiser of the campaign, said: “If Southwark are proposing another consultation, then it needs to be just that. At previous events they have clearly not listened, even responding to concerns about the proposed height of towers by subsequently making the towers higher, for example.

“For them to continue with an empty sham of consultation would be pointless and a waste of everyone's time. We would however welcome proper engagement which sees the Council take on board the concerns of local people.”

Southwark Council will publish the feedback paper from the original consultation on July 18, with a new consultation taking place on the revised proposals in September.

The new borough commander, Simon Messinger, started his first day of the new job on July 4. His appointment follows the departure of Zander Gibson, who held the position since March 2014, and was transferred to the Met Police’s royalty and specialist protection command.

Mr Messinger said: “At the end of my first week as borough commander at Southwark, I wanted to say how

pleased I am to have taken up the role.

“I first came here for a week’s work experience when I was fifteen, and then as a detective sergeant between 2003 and 2005, so returning as borough commander is an absolute privilege.

“I'm naturally keen to continue the strong performance that has been established. Southwark has a long history of engagement between its residents and police, local council and voluntary organisations and we are striving to not only continue but expand on this area of Policing where possible.

“Working together with all the interested parties on any given issue we can make the most of what we have by coordinating our efforts and focus.”

Historic pub to re-open THE HISTORIC Elephant and Castle pub reopens today under new management, one year since it was taken over by squatters.

The old boozer will now enjoy a retro, seventies facelift, with an offering of “good British food and beer” after it was bought by Antic London.

Max Alderman, managing director of the Antic brand which runs the Tiger in Camberwell, the East Dulwich Tavern and John the Unicorn in Peckham, said he wanted the pub to become a home for all.

“The Elephant and Castle is a longestablish pub and we’re not going to ignore that,” Max said.

“Our offering will be broad ranging

and we will try and to inclusive to everyone. We have a 2am licence for Friday and Saturday, so we want people to have a fun night out, come in for a roast dinner on a Sunday and a good drink after work.

“It will be all hands on pump and finding our feet, as we’re opening our doors to welcome people in for a drink, then we will open to kitchen perhaps in a couple of weeks.”

In July last year, squatters held a month-long demonstration against gentrification, before they were evicted by police in a dramatic earlymorning raid. A local shop keeper described seeing 20 to 25 squatters being led out in their underwear at 4am on July 23.

Public enquiry date set for rocket tower BOROUGH

Appeal launched after 30 storey block rejected by council last year

A PUBLIC enquiry into the 100m-tall Borough skyscraper shaped like a rocket ship has been announced for March 28 2017, after plans were aborted following a rejection by Southwark Council’s planning committee last year.

The 30-storey tower was planned to sit next to the Menier Chocolate Factory Theatre with nine large flats,

sitting above a new theatre, museum and restaurant in Southwark Street.

But the plans by Nikita Yavein, of Russian architects Studio 44, were rejected by Southwark Council’s planning committee in October 2015, calling it “incongruous, isolated and alien”.

The development’s design, according to its website, was inspired

by Yuri Gagarin, the Russian cosmonaut who achieved “one of the most important and spectacular events of the 20th century” when he

became the first man to orbit the earth.

But as the development would only consist of nine large residences, despite having space for “around 30”, it meant that it also fell foul of the council’s affordable homes provision.

An appeal was launched against the decision in April this year and the public enquiry is expected to sit for seven days. The scheme proposed demolishing the current site at 55 Southwark Street, which is an art school and car park.

Cuts to school nurses and health visitors

FEWER NURSES and health visitors will be available at Southwark’s schools and for vulnerable families due to cuts from the government, the council has claimed.

The cuts will come in two strokes, with Southwark Council’s allocation for these services from the public health grant falling from £1.472m to £1.354m, and local health commissioners losing £533,232 from its budget.

The announcement was made on Wednesday, July 6, where health professionals explained plans to reduce the total number of school nurses and visitors to local councillors, which, they were told, will leave nurses with less time to see vulnerable children in their case loads. A report published ahead of the meeting said: “A reduced number of health visitors who have an increased number of children on their case loads,” and that case loads of school nurses will need to be “reconfigured”.

School nurses will also be left with less time to see vulnerable children or to hold confidential drop-in sessions, where

children can discuss issues such as sexual health and bullying. The report says each nurse will been assigned six schools to visit each week.

Richard Frack, the council’s director of commissioning children’s and adults services , said: “We have 77 whole-time health visitors servicing Southwark. Guy’s Hospital say 20 of those posts will need to be reduced. We have 25 school nurses and we will need to reduce between five and eight. But because we currently have that number of positions that need filling, we will not need to make any redundancies.

“I am confident we will still be able to meet the needs of children and families already known to us. The risk is more around early identification of sexual health and other problems.”

This new round of cuts to the council’s budget for health services follows an even bigger cut last year of nearly £1.2m, after Mr Frack told the committee it had been increased in 2014. The public health grant for the financial year 2016-17 will be £22.5m. The reforms will take effect in Southwark as of this month. The committee also heard that services in Lambeth have similarly been cut, as of May 12 this year.

Aslan Gergov, 29, of Bath Terrace, Borough, was handed the sentence at Southwark Crown Court for two counts of conspiracy to defraud the UK Clearing Banks, and two counts of converting criminal property contrary to section 327(1)(c) of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

He joins fellow Russian Aslan Abazov, 30, of Cromwell Road, Kensington, who was sentenced to seven years and six months' imprisonment for two counts of conspiracy to defraud the UK Clearing Banks and two counts of converting criminal property contrary to section 327(1)(c) of the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002.

On November 9 2014, five business accounts held at a leading high street bank were compromised by cyber criminals, who used malware to transfer funds into 'mule' accounts opened by employees of Gergov and Abazov. The funds siphoned from the five accounts totalled almost £1 million.

One of their mules, Sergo Sahin, 26, of no fixed address, was sentenced to 18 weeks' imprisonment for conspiracy to defraud the UK Clearing Banks between January 1 2014 and November 10 2014.

At earlier hearings, Andrejs Ignatjevs, 48, Victoria Road, Ruislip was sentenced to five months' imprisonment and Kazbek Varitlov, 33, of Wesley Avenue, E16 was sentenced to seven

and a half months.

After the funds were transferred from the original business accounts, the cash was laundered through 166 mule accounts prior to being withdrawn at a number of venues across London including Heathrow Airport.

Typically, the gang would exchange 2000-4000 Euros at each currency exchange they visited.

Activities undertaken by the gang to launder the funds included Sahin buying items of women's jewellery at Cartier, a white gold bracelet for £3,400 and a white gold, diamond necklace for

£2,970.

Ignatjevs and Varitlov were arrested as they attempted repeatedly to buy large sums of Euros from foreign exchange outlets at Heathrow Airport.

A subsequent search of Vartilov's address resulted in the recovery of a large quantity of bank debit cards, none of which were in his name.

Abazov and Gergov were arrested on October 14 2015 and they were charged the following day - both were remanded in custody.

They were also found to be controlling similar money laundering operations throughout Germany, Austria and Poland.

Another method the gang used to

move funds abroad was to buy high value watches or jewellery in the UK and employ a mule to take it to Russia, possibly by wearing it on a flight. When it reached Russia the item would be resold to recoup the funds.

Detectives established there were further victims. Information obtained from a number of devices belonging to the gang evidenced further losses to additional victims of around £3.5 million over a two-year period, bringing the known total of their fraudulent activities to around £4.5million.

However, total losses to victims due to the activities of this network are thought to be far in excess of this figure.

Abazov and Gergov were also using their illegal earnings to fund a building project in Nalchik, Russia, that had been underway for twelve months.

The network was run via a system of hierarchy, with the mules being at the bottom and Abazov and Gergov at the top - they liaised with the cyber criminals who had originally hacked the business accounts.

Detective Inspector Jason Tunn, of the Met's Operation Falcon, said: "The evidence in this case showed that Gergov and Abazov were the head of a sophisticated, highly organised, international money laundering project operated to support global cyber crime activity.

"Their convictions demonstrate the determination with which the MPS will actively pursue these criminals to disrupt their activities and arrest them."

Legal proceedings will now commence under the Proceeds of Crime Act to confiscate assets.

To date, just £190,731.68 of the cash taken on November 9 has been recovered.

Junior Dr takes aim at Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt in his own pop video

A JUNIOR doctor from Elephant and Castle has produced a pop song in protest at the government’s health reforms, and wants to raise £1m for charity.

Rishi Dhir, 35, wrote the song Stand Up with David Randall, the guitarist of electronic legends Faithless, and had the music video shot at Camberwell Film Studios.

He was inspired to write the protest tune about the changes to NHS junior doctors’ contracts. Health secretary Jeremy Hunt announced this week that working contracts will be imposed on junior doctors.

Many within the profession argue the new contracts will risk patient safety by forcing doctors to work more unsociable hours, while not employing the extra staff necessary, or increasing doctors’ wages to compensate.

Rishi, who has worked in the NHS for ten years and is training as an orthopaedic registrar, said: “The lyrics of the song are ‘it’s not safe, not fair, we didn’t sign up to this’.

“The government don’t care for what our point of view is. We just want to look after people, not to be forced to play politics and be degraded.

“Although the music video and the

song are political, the style of both is meant to be quirky and memorable, but with thoughtful lyrics. I think that’s the way to leave an impression on people.

“If you listen to ‘Imagine’ or ‘What’s going on’, they are both very political songs, but they’re beautiful pieces of music.”

Rishi, who trained at Guys’ and St Thomas’ hospitals, said he met the Faithless guitarist through a mutual friend, and through his own career as a singer and sitar player.

“David is a bit of an activist too. A friend of mine put us in touch and he liked my voice and song writing,” Rishi said.

“I recorded the song myself and Dave produced it and is releasing it on his record label, Brixtown Records. It would be great if it went viral, maybe made it into the charts so it could make a statement.”

A BOROUGH business that is creating ‘logs’ from ground coffee beans to burn in home fireplaces, has won a slice of a £1,000,000 prize fund.

Bio-Bean, based in Cole Street, recycles coffee ground waste into sustainable biofuels, and was founded by Arthur Kay, 25, after he saw an opportunity to use coffee waste to power cities, buildings and cars.

It now processes 50,000 tonnes of waste a year and has just launched a new product, Coffee Logs, a carbon neutral consumer product that replaces coal and wood.

The Virgin Media Business Voom 2016 competition, now in its fifth year, saw 20,000 registrations, 750,000 votes and a 29 hours ‘pitch-athon’, where they were judged by a panel including Sir Richard Branson and Tyra Banks.

Bio-Bean will receive £50,000 to help grow the business, mentoring from Virgin StartUp and from VOOM Professionals recruited via LinkedIn, a £250,000

funds, which will go toward providing 1,580 meals for vulnerable families.

Kay said: “Winning Virgin VOOM is a real vote of confidence in bio-bean, the green energy company I founded to recycle waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels.

“The prize will support bio-bean in rapidly bringing our new product, Coffee Logs, to market. I founded bio-bean as an architecture student at The Bartlett, UCL, to turn waste into resources. It's been an

incredible journey, with pitching to Richard Branson at VOOM being a real highlight!”

Richard Branson, Virgin Founder, said: “I love seeing entrepreneurs pitch an idea to me which they are incredibly passionate about and it was both a difficult and inspiring task to choose just two winners. All the finalists of the Virgin Media Business VOOM competition showed they have the dedication and intense desire to take their business to incredible heights and I believe they will all do so.”

The location used to be a garden nursery and is closed to public use, but the plans now include bringing it back into public use and providing 1,000 burial spaces in recognition of a London-wide shortage.

Councillor Ian Wingfield, Southwark Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Public Realm, said: “The council’s aim is to create a long term sustainable solution to burial services.

“This will take some time to develop and we’ll need local people to help shape this vision, but in the meantime the old nursery site within Camberwell New Cemetery provides a short term solution to ensure the service continues as normal.

“I hope as many people as possible feed into the consultation and shape

what the new site will look like.”

There has been opposition to the plans for the site, however, with concerns that it may not be the best use of the land.

The campaign group Save Southwark Woods, Friends of Camberwell Cemeteries, have recently launched a competition to come up with alternate ideas for what it could be turned into, to be presented to the council.

THE ROTHERHITHE Festival took place on Saturday July 9 at King George’s Field, with residents enjoying free rides and music from bands including Proper Ghanda, Tommy Smith and Basie Millers.

Southwark Mayor Kath Whittam opened the day and even sang happy birthday to a little boy in the crowd.

Barry Duckett, an organiser of the festival, said: “This year’s festival was our biggest yet and it was a great success according to all those who turned out, with people from all communities turning out.

“The mayor [of Southwark] opened the festival and MP Neil Coyle and his wife were there. A great big thank you to the mayor, who made a little boy's birthday special by singing happy birthday to him on stage.

“A big thank you to our sponsors and the bands who did a great job of entertaining the crowd and a special thank you to our friend Richard Livingstone, who stayed all day and closed the festival.

“Thanks to the stage people and the stage hands too, who did a great job.”

FAMILY AND friends of Jimmy Mizen, who was murdered in 2008, aged sixteen, have raised over £1,000 for his charity – including with help from Bermondsey youngster Harvey Brown.

Saturday, July 2, saw walkers set off from Richmond and Battersea to raise money for the Jimmy Mizen Foundation.

Among the group who set off to walk seven miles from Battersea Park to the Tower Bridge House pub was sevenyear-old Harvey, with his mum and dad, Vikki and Dean.

“It was a brilliant day,” said Dean. “It didn’t even feel like we were doing that distance. We just strolled on and enjoyed ourselves – although my legs did ache on Monday.

“It rained a couple of times but we stopped at a different pub for each mile,

and took shelter if it started spitting.”

The family were also in high spirits for little Harvey “full of energy” and “happier than ever” since starting his Vimzim treatment for his debilitating disease, Morquio.

“Harvey loved it, he spent some of it walking and some of it on my shoulders.

He was trotting ahead of us at the beginning and then he took it steady.

“We gave out little cards to people who we saw on the way just to explain what the cause was for. It was incredible. There was a lot of generous people giving money and on our own we raised more than £1,243.

“We did the last mile with [Jimmy Mizen’s mother] Margaret. They were a huge help to us in our campaigning to

help get Harvey’s treatment. They are an incredible family, who work hard to make the streets safer for young kids.”

Vikki said: “We’re helping out because they were so much help to us.

“We can’t believe all they have done.

They have worked so hard to try and make their streets safer for kids. They are an amazing family.”

The money will go to the Jimmy Mizen foundation, started by Jimmy’s parents after their son’s death.

While Dean, Vikki and Harvey took their walk for seven miles, others took on the challenge of crossing 21 bridges on their route from Richmond to Southwark, to mark Jimmy’s recent 21st birthday.

Vandals used red paint to cover the main sign of the park as well as decorative boulders along a path.

Steve Cornish, a Rotherhithe resident, told the News that he was keen for the graffiti to be removed as quickly as possible as there were two schools nearby.

He said: “I’m hoping it’s gone soon as it’s been reported. I was walking the dog over the weekend and saw the graffiti all over the place, including on the sign.

“It’s not easy to get off, especially as some of it’s on granite. We have definitely got an increase in graffiti recently. We want it dealt with as quickly as possible, so it doesn’t encourage other people to do it more. It’s near two schools as well and the children shouldn’t see it in case they start to think it’s normal.”

Southwark Council said the matter was now with the cleansing team and should be cleared up soon.

“Hospitals are very busy places all year round, including summer, with A&E staff dealing with life threatening emergencies, like strokes and heart attacks.

“If you become ill over the summer it is important to think about which local health service is right for you, rather than just going straight to A&E.” A basic first aid kit at home can help

with minor ailments, such as stomach upsets, allergies, headaches, sunburn and insect bites.

Summer is also the time of year when allergies such as asthma, eczema and hay fever can get much worse, with symptoms including sneezing, coughing, skin rashes and shortness of breath. But there’s no need to get bogged down by runny noses, itchy eyes, irritated skin and tickly throats.

Allergy sufferers can prepare for summer months by getting the medicines they need from their local pharmacist.

TIPS TO STAY COOL AND REDUCE HEALTH RISKS

Making integrated care a reality in Southwark and Lambeth

SOUTHWARK AND Lambeth Integrated Care (SLIC) has had a positive impact on improving care for local people, and has built a strong foundation for further integrating health and social systems across the two boroughs, according to a new report.

Set up in 2012, Southwark and Lambeth Integrated Care was four year programme involving a partnership of local health and social care professionals, and residents in Southwark and Lambeth.

‘Integrating Care in Southwark and Lambeth: What we did and how we did it’ outlines the achievements of

SLIC, highlights its key successes and challenges, and shares lessons learned.

HEADLINES IN THE REPORT INCLUDE THAT:

• During the four-year lifespan of SLIC (2012-2016), despite the population of Lambeth and Southwark aged 65 years and over growing by 5%, hospital admissions and bed days were stabilised, and residential and nursing home placements were reduced 61% • 100% of patient records are now available to GPs and the three

hospitals as a result of the Local Care Record, leading to 75% fewer calls from GPs to hospitals chasing information • 14,500 people have benefitted from a Holistic Assessment (HA), creating with their GP a care plan to address their needs • 1,500 calls to the Telephone Advice and Liaison (TALK) service have resulted in 720 people avoiding admission to hospital • 75% of people attending Strength and Balance classes reported increased confidence and quality of life, and no hospital admissions due to falls

Of the 27 projects associated with SLIC - ranging from large-scale system change to low-cost, smallscale interventions that were codesigned by professionals, clinicians and citizens - 24 have now been mainstreamed or chosen for continued testing.

Some of the measures of success, says the report, are the experiences of the people SLIC has affected – both those who provide care and the recipients of it, from the 72-year-old woman who now has a reduced risk of stroke and a better quality of life due to an holistic assessment, to the professionals who are benefitting from the trust and relationships across the

health and social care system SLIC has created, for example GPs and Age UK Care Navigators working together to provide a more holistic approach to care.

The SLIC phase of the partnership ended on 31 March 2016 to make way for its next incarnation – the Southwark and Lambeth Strategic Partnership. The Strategic Partnership is using the lessons learned in SLIC to continue working towards achieving the vision of improving the value of care for local people.

S

O NOW, after the disastrous and divisive referendum campaign, we have a new Prime Minister.

And for only the second time in our history it will be woman. I offer Theresa May my congratulations. Having a woman at the top of our country sends a strong message that no girl or woman can be told "you can't do that because you're a woman".

The overwhelming majority of Conservative MPs are men and she beat them all to the top spot.

But what will she, as a woman who has now reached the top, do to change things for other women?

Here are the 8 U-turns we need from this new woman Prime Minister.

1. She should start with a U-turn which ensures that our public services, like the NHS and care for the elderly, have the resources they need.

2. She must ensure that every family has accessible, affordable childcare to care for children while the parents are working.

Too many women have to limit what they do in their work because they can't afford childcare. She should re-open the children's centres that her government has closed. And set about opening new ones.

3. She must give parents strong rights at work. Most of the people at work are someone's parent. Parents need to be able to spend time with their children as well as earn money to spend on them. There should be longer maternity and paternity leave and higher maternity and paternity pay.

4. She must give grandparents new rights at work. Grandparents need new rights to take paid time off work to help with their grandchildren 5. She must give the police the resources and the leadership they need to step up tackling domestic violence. A woman prime minister should make it a priority to prevent the deaths of two women every week at the hands of domestic violence.

6. She must ensure that what we do internationally, through our Foreign Office and through our development aid, helps empower women around the world who are suffering poverty and oppression. 50% of our ambassadors must be women.

7. She must implement Labour's Equality Act, now and in full. That will strengthen the law on equal pay and against discrimination for everyone, not just women but people of all backgrounds.

8. She should appoint a cabinet and ministerial team which is half women.

When Margaret Thatcher was a Prime Minister we had a slogan "The First Lady puts women last" Being the Prime Minister is not just about who you are. It's about what you do - for this country and all the people in it. A woman Prime Minister should deliver for women in the country she will now lead.

AFTER BREXIT this might not seem so exciting but our bins have not been emptied in three weeks.

It has been a long time since this has happened.Under the Lib Dems it was not so prevalent but when it happened, we didn't have the juxtaposition of a sign reminding us that the council is spending £300 million repairing flats that looked perfectly fine.

It's also galling as many of us live in properties for which we have paid hefty council taxes for years but unable to repair our own rotting windows, Adding insult to injury, the council used to take away bulk items for free.

Now it is charging £16! Of course this will disproportionately affect the poor and the old who have neither the means to transport the stuff themselves or the money to pay the council.

I knew it wouldn't be long before we started feeling the effects of a socialist council who have no idea of the unintended effects of its policies.with the large council tax charged by this council the least we can expect is our bins emptied on a regular basis.

Give us the 50 metre pool you promised

FURTHER TO your article in Southwark News on 2nd June 2016 concerning the promise Southwark made to its residents about the length of the new [Surrey Quays] swimming pool:

Southwark has now broken this promise, which was to build a 50m pool, and have stated their intention that the new pool should be 25m – shorter even than the existing pool of 33m.

Given that the council needs to use its funds wisely, and at the same time must benefit as large a part of its residents as possible, an alternative

suggestion could be to retain the current length of 33m, and in addition to adapt the learner’s pool into a multiuse pool. This would meet the council’s commitment to deliver a sustainable state of the art modern leisure pool complex.

As the proposed plans already include a learner’s pool, this pool could be made into a multi-purpose pool by having an adjustable floor, making it suitable as a learner’s pool when the floor is raised, and a diving pool when the floor is lowered. There could be at least one and three metre spring and platform boards. This technique is already used in several pools, including the diving / learner pool at the London Aquatics Centre at Stratford. (Photo attached).

If the learner’s pool had an adjustable floor, then it would be a multi-use pool: for leaners, diving, synchronised diving, synchronised swimming, scuba diving and possibly even for canoeing practice. This opens the door to many more actives and to a much larger number of residents in Canada Water. It would be realistic for the council to consider building a pool with these assets.

The assets of having a multi-use pool and a 25 or 33 meter pool rather than only a 50 meter pool would be: - Learners area away from main pool - Diving from spring and platform boards - Scuba diving and practice - Synchronised swimming - Synchronised diving - Practice for canoeing The advantages also of having a pool for swimming and a composite pool would be: - The leisure centre would be a leading centre for Aquatics in Southwark - There would be training facilities in Southwark for three Olympic water events - More than one swimming event can take place at the same time Andy Hind, via email

Fag packet calculations on Dulwich Hamlet

I REFER to Jonathan Hunt’s letters over the last few weeks giving his views and cannot let these pass as they offer a very simplistic view of both Dulwich Hamlet FC finances and the development that is proposed.

Whilst I welcome Jonathan’s attempt to calculate the viability of the scheme, there appears to be absolutely zero thought for any of the multitude of variables that can affect a development. Perhaps Jonathan can simply advise the council and the mayor’s office per se and save everyone the cost of any appointed consultants? It all seems very clear from the fag packet calculations that he’s sent across as gospel here.

The raising of the issue of affordable housing is indeed relevant, and one that we as a progressive, forward-thinking and community focused club have also raised with the scheme’s applicants. The answer that came back loud and clear is that 35% is indeed manageable, but not if there is a stadium to build!

This is not a residential development but a stadium-led one.

They could cut costs, but we would be faced with the same situation that Fisher are in; a stadium suitable for the Southern Counties East League, no form of revenue from the leisure facility – and a sustainable future in nothing but name. If 35% is the amount that is asked of applicants without any other additional costs, then how can we expect this one to generate an extra £5,000,000 worth of costs for the stadium AND the borough’s requested level of affordable housing?

This is where the fag packet calculations fall apart completely.

Thankfully, the almost daily torrential downpours finally stopped as July began. and it looks like summer has arrived with warmer days and clearer skies.

Due to last month’s challenging weather there are extra tasks to be done in the July garden. Leaf loss from trees has been dramatic, it is sad to see so many swirling around during the summer months. Tidy leaves and any fallen branches; trim back damaged stems and support plants that have been weakened by the weather, using stakes.

Continue deadheading roses and apply a liquid feed (or seaweed tonic). Summer pruning of some fruit trees can also be done; read up before tackling this job; it needs to be done correctly for each type of tree or future flowering and subsequent fruiting could be affected.

July is the month to start planting autumn flowering bulbs. And although it seems a long way off until next season’s displays, it is a delight to see these blooms in October time when most plants are dying back. Cyclamen is always a good choice, there are many different types - Cyclamen ciprium has white flowers with a splash of pink and a lovely perfume or there’s Cyclamen persicum also scented. Colchicum is the purple-pink autumn crocus, best planted in clumps for effect. Or try the more unusual and showy Amaryllis (Belladonna lily) – available in garden centres or from online suppliers.

Growth in the garden is now reaching its peak, and is especially luxuriant after the monsoon like conditions in June.

There is such a variety of beautiful shrubs, herbs and annuals in bloom including Hollyhocks, Hebes, the summer Jasmine, Lavenders and floribunda Roses. Some of the traditional medicinal plants also flower at this time; St John’s wort (Hypericum) has golden flowers which radiate light; it is used by Herbalists to treat depression (as well as other ailments). Passionflower (P. incarnata) with its curious frilly purple flowers is used as a sedative for sleep problems. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is a versatile medicinal plant traditionally known as a wound healing herb, but having a wide range of uses for different ailments (beware the foliage can cause skin irritation). Always seek the advice of a qualified Herbalist before using any plants for medicinal purposes. The cultivated Yarrow, grown as an ornamental, has feathery leaves and compact red/pink flower heads.

Gray over Shoreditch

HE SOUTH London cognoscenti, literati and glitterati were out in force over in Shoreditch, as well as art lovers from all other parts of London and beyond, for a new show in Bethnal Green Road, writes Michael Holland...

Rotherhithe artist Ed Gray had the whole place abuzz with two new works being exhibited for the first time: one depicting The Thomas à Becket in the Old Kent Road - an animated moment in time of the people who make that part of the world so remarkable - and a large acrylic, ink, charcoal and Rotherhithe chalk rendition of the Bermondsey Carnival, so fresh from last Saturday’s event you could still hear Paul Young singing! The artist forages on the Rotherhithe foreshore for the chalk and is created from trilobites, a fossil group of marine arthropods that became extinct 250 million years ago.

The grand party for nurse Mary Seacole

The giant bronze £500,000 tribute to Mrs Seacole, positioned outside St Thomas’ and facing the Houses of Parliament, was a token of gratitude for the compassion and courage she showed to hundreds of Britain’s soldiers during the nineteenth century conflict.

Mrs Seacole was born in Jamaica in 1805 and died at her home in Paddington in 1881, with few personal ties to the borough.

But local historian and black history author Stephen Bourne has uncovered an incredible story from 1857, of a huge four-day celebration – better yet, a ‘grant military festival’ – thrown especially for her in the ornate old Music Hall of Surrey Gardens in Kennington with thousands of guests.

The giant party for Mrs Seacole, who sat along a banqueting table between Lord Rockeby and Lord George Paget, was twice covered by The Times newspaper: on day two (July 28) and day four (July 30) of the prolonged party.

Though no by-line was given, the reporter described the scene vividly. The “crammed” hall was “tastefully decorated, with English, French, Sardinian and Turkish flags” while an orchestra played for the hundreds who gathered for her.

Performances were made by “united military bands” of the Royal Navy and Army, with music composed by the 1st and 2nd Life Guards, The Royal Horseguards Blue, the Grenadier Guards, The Coldstreams, Scots Fusiliers, Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery and Marines Nine, and a 1,000 strong outing by the Royal Surrey Choral Society.

“Never was the strong sentiment of loyalty, which is a distinctive and happy characteristic of the British people, expressed through the medium of sound with more overpowering grandeur,” the reporter added.

The atmosphere climaxing with encores of Rule Britannia, and Partant pour la Syrie, though the night went on until an “usually late hour”.

The reporter concludes that at the end of the concert, “the name Mrs Seacole was shouted by a thousand voices” as the party rose to say cheers.

The writer continues: “Few names were

more familiar to the public during the late war was than that of Mrs Seacole. “…Never did woman seem happier, and never was hearty and kindly greeting bestowed upon a worthier object.”

Saying her personal praise to the war nurse, often credited as having as much influence as Florence Nightingale, the reporter wrote: “Here the medical knowledge she acquired in the West Indies proved of eminent service.

“Her hut was daily besieged by Army Works and Land Transport men, for whom she would prescribe in cases of diarrhoea, dysentery, and other camp maladies.

“Not satisfied with this, she supplied them with creature comforts from her store, in most cases without payment or any hope of it.”

Mrs Seacole is herself quoted in the July 30 article, having given an interview to the secretary of state for war. The question is unknown, but her carefully chosen words were: “Give me my needle and thread, my medicine chest, my bandages, my probe and scissors, and I’m off.”

It was also noted that the four-day festival in raised hundreds of pounds for Seacole personally to “recommence her career if usefulness and activity”.

Included in The Times’ article from July 28 is a quote that emblazons the website of the Mary Seacole Memorial Statue Appeal, whose members campaigned for over ten years.

It reads: “Trust that England will not forget one who nursed the sick, who sought out her wounded, to aid and succour them, and who performed the last offices for some of her illustrious dead.”

ednesday evening has got off to a good start. I’m melting into a leather, lemon yellow couch with a cocktail in hand and an unobstructed view of Big Ben. Outside, a crowd pushes past the window - it’s the usual Southbank scrum - but inside all is cool, calm and utterly civilised, writes Ellie Ross...

Welcome to Gillray’s Steakhouse and Bar, located inside the Edwardian Baroque-style County Hall on Westminster Bridge. It is part of the 5* Marriott Hotel, but a room reservation isn’t necessary to warrant a visit.

My first stop is the bar, which has a sophisticated but unpretentious feel with its Chesterfield sofas, carved wooden walls and crystal chandelier shaped like a flower. Vast windows overlook the river and Houses of Parliament, and thoughtful touches include photo frames on the window sills and flowers decorating the marble tables.

The bar boasts over 100 types of gin, and my tipple of choice (recommended by the barman when I tell him I like my cocktails sweet but not sickly sweet) is Childhood Memory. It is something to behold - a coupe filled with apricotcoloured, elderflower-flavoured liquor, with two edible pansies floating on the top. “It was named by one of our bar staff,” the waiter tells me as he lays the glass down for me. “She used to pick elderflowers when she was young, so she created this drink as a nod to that childhood memory.”

I walk through to the restaurant - all parquet flooring, chandeliers and more river views - and slip into a teal leather chair. I’m greeted by my friendly waiter Tiago, whose knowledge of the menu is impressive. The chicken parfait has no fewer than 30 ingredients, he tells me.

And the Regardez Moi cocktail - a whiskey, bitters and sherry concoction is a great aperitif to stimulate the appetite. “And you’ll want a big appetite for what’s in store,” he adds.

I order both. The cocktail arrives in a miniature carafe with an orb of ice on top, acting as a lid to contain the smoke (the drink includes smoked camomile).

It is ceremoniously poured into a glass, and as the smoke billows out of the cup, Tiago explains that the cocktail is based on the story of the Fire of London, which was sparked just two miles from here in 1666. It tastes good - and as smoky as it looks.

The parfait is smooth and flavoursome, and the meaty taste is complemented by the lightness of

poached pears, while the ginger bread crumbs add texture. Another standout starter is the Kidderton goat cheese, which is served on a bed of watermelon, crushed pistachios and aged balsamic dressing. It’s a delicious, bright and beautiful combination - and just one of the highlights on head chef Sylvain Chevereau’s menu.

Between courses I glance up at a cartoon on the wall. It shows Napoleon and William Pitt sitting at a dinner table, carving their knives hungrily into the globe in the form of a steaming plumpudding. It’s a copy of The Plumbpudding In Danger, arguably the most famous work by eighteenth-century caricaturist James Gillray, whom the restaurant is named after.

Soon I’m carving into my own meal, a perfectly cooked, juicy fillet of beef. The restaurant is known for its Aberdeen

Angus steak, aged for 35 days and primarily sourced from Kent and Essexbased farms. Yet there’s a good choice all-round, with stone bass, vegetarian risotto and pork steak among the other dishes. And though ordering a la carte isn’t cheap, the Market Menu option offers three courses and a glass of Prosecco for £27.

As you may expect from a steakhouse, my fillet is near perfection and the fistsized portion is ample. My companion’s T-bone is also impressive in both size and taste, though hers is slightly overdone and served with Bearnaise sauce that is so thick you have to spoon it out instead of pouring.

We sample an ingenious take on Yorkshire puddings - twice baked and filled with oozing hot cheese - as well as chips that are crisp outside, fluffy inside and flavoured with just the right amount

of fragrant rosemary and earthy truffle.

The spinach has a zesty kick of lemon with a good amount of heat from the chilli.

While meat dishes are stripped-back (there’s just the steak and a Portobello mushroom on my plate), the starters and dessert are where the chefs display their artistic flair. The chocolate bomb arrives on a bed of summer fruit coulis, with triangular slices of strawberries and a pop of green dill scattered around the edges. The chocolate orb is drizzled with more coulis, and when I crack the thin cocoa shell, a colourful mix of summer fruit is revealed. Blending the heady richness of the chocolate with a refreshing tang of fruit, it’s another menu triumph - and, along with the fine views and unique cocktails, is just one of the reasons I’ll be making a return visit.

AUSSIE OPENER Aaron Finch blasted a quick fire 50 that helped Surrey comprehensively defeat Somerset in a crucial T20 encounter.

The 29-year-old ended up hitting 51 off 26 balls, a knock that included five fours and three sixes.

MILLWALL LIONESSES manager Rebecca Sawiuk has left the club part way through her first season in charge of the club.

Sawiuk took up the post during the close season but the club has announced she would be stepping down to focus on other career opportunities.

A club spokesman said: “We wish Rebecca the best in her future endeavours. We are looking to appoint a new First Team Manager as soon as possible, with [assistant coach] Lauren Phillips taking interim charge of all first team operations, supported by Development Manager Andy Hill.”

Southwark Youth Games Basketball Champs SOUTHWARK TEAMS won both the male and female basketball tournaments at the London Youth Games last weekend.

The girls won their fourth title in five years and the boys team backed that up by defeating Haringey in their final to secure the double victory.

the end of another tough year of competition at the London Youth Games in which Team Southwark secured twelfth place overall, out 33 London boroughs, taking part in 25 sports over 43 competitions.

Elsewhere youngsters from Southwark picked up gold medal wins in girls Hockey, BMX, Cycling and Waterpolo. Southwark were also

awarded silver in the boy’s crosscountry race back in November.

MILLWALL GOALKEEPER Jordan Archer spent some of his time off this summer in Miami, Aruba and Bulgaria, but he obviously didn’t over-do it judging by his first day back at pre-season training.

“My fitness was decent,” Archer said.

“I beat a few outfield players in the running tests, though I’m not going to name any names! I woke up on Saturday morning and could barely move. That’s expected, it’s part and parcel of pre-season.

“But we’ve got a good sports science team, a good medical team that help us keep in shape. We’re well looked after on that side of things, hopefully that will take us to another level and take us one step further.”

Archer went to Bulgaria with Alfie Pavey, Sid Nelson and Paris CowanHall. A year ago, those players were welcoming Archer to the club after he had joined permanently from Tottenham, and at 22 years old, getting close to the last-chance saloon to establish a professional career.

Twelve months on he is one of the most important players in Neil Harris’ squad, and he admitted he was eager to resume training and start the process he hopes will end with promotion to the Championship.

Archer is also familiar with one of the new signings this summer.

“I played with Gregg (Wylde) with the Scotland U21s,” Archer said. “I knew him before so it was nice to see him come in. I’ve been away a few times with him. He’s a good player, he’s going to be a great addition to the squad.

“I was new to the group last summer but this time I’ve got a year’s experience behind me. There will be some younger guys in the position I was in last year.

“I was excited coming back. The first two weeks it’s nice to get away and chill out but after that you’re itching to get

“I took a complete break. When I was in Miami I watched Euro 2016, I just wanted to completely recharge my batteries.

“I had a month of doing nothing so you need to get into shape and be ready to go. It was nice to see the boys again and see a few new faces.”

Ambler hopes for EFL Trophy success despite Premier withdrawals

THE NEW English Football League Trophy is hitting problems before it has even started.

The competition, which replaces the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy for the 201617 season, has been expanded from 48 to 64 clubs, with sixteen Category One academies invited to join the 48 League One and League Two teams.

Fifteen Premier League Category One clubs were invited to take part, as were Newcastle United.

However, Arsenal, Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester United,

Manchester City and Liverpool are all set to snub the competition.

The new format has angered many lower-league fans, who claim it’s the first step to eventually introducing a B league in the English football pyramid structure.

Supporters of the revamp say it will give Premier League players who are not in their first team the chance to gain experience in senior competitive football, but that claim is being undermined by the apparent lack of interest from the top sides.

Millwall reached the semi-finals of the JPT last season, where they lost to Oxford United, and Andy Ambler is

still hopeful the new structure will work if other clubs accept offers to take part.

“I know a number of big clubs are rumoured to be pulling out, which is disappointing,” the Millwall chief executive said. “The Football League went into this with the Premier League thinking all the big clubs would participate.

“I think there are 23 Category One clubs and there were sixteen invited.

We shouldn’t forget in all this that this is a one-year trial. If after this year it is deemed to be unsuccessful then we just pull the plug on it.”

Romeo: We will use play-off pain to inspire us

MAHLON ROMEO could give his manager Neil Harris another option this season – as a centreback.

Romeo played eighteen consecutive games as a right-back from his debut against Walsall in February until his red card on the last day of the season at Gillingham ruled him out of the playoffs.

In early June he joined his Antigua & Barbuda team-mates for their 2017 Caribbean Cup qualifiers against Puerto Rico and Granada. Romeo, who will turn 21 on September 19, played as a right-wing back in the first game, a 2-1 defeat, and in the centre of defence in the 5-1 win over Granada.

Former Gillingham defender Romeo believes he has developed physically in the last number of months with his involvement in the first team, but he is not taking his place in the starting XI for granted despite taking the league by storm as Millwall finished fourth last season.

“I’ve been doing a lot of gym work whenever I’ve got the chance after training.” Romeo said. “I think I’ve naturally grown as well.

“I wouldn’t say I’m a first choice, it’s completely up to the manager. It’s a new season and it’s up to him to choose between me and whoever else is available for that position.”

Despite his modesty, Romeo will start the campaign as Harris’ first-choice right-back. Carlos Edwards departed the club earlier this summer, and Shaun Cummings is still a number of weeks away from a return to competitive action.

Injuries to those two last season forced Harris to thrust Romeo into his side, but a series of powerful performances, typified by his astute defensive reading of the game and rapid, intelligent surges into attacking positions, meant he was soon an established regular even after Edwards had regained fitness.

His suspension for the play-off final against Barnsley unbalanced Millwall and ultimately contributed to the defensive uncertainly that cost them the game.

Romeo wants the squad to use the memories of that day to inspire them this season.

“I was in the dugout with the boys and it was one of the most gutting experiences to not be involved,” Romeo admitted. “But it’s part and parcel of the game. I was still proud watching the boys and it was a great experience even though I didn’t play.

“I think this season we’ll definitely have that in the back of our heads and use it.”

BEN THOMPSON was so keen to get a head-start in pre-season he went to the training ground over the summer break to keep his fitness topped up.

That’s the kind of eagerness and professionalism that has endeared him to Millwall fans and he is arguably the epitome of the club’s current success in bringing through young players from the academy and equipping them to make a real difference to the first team.

Twenty-year-old Thompson certainly did that last season, particularly in the final few crucial months as Millwall reached the League One play-off final at Wembley.

Thompson did spend part of his time off during the closed season in the Caribbean island of Aruba, but when he returned to London he was straight on the phone to club physio Bobby Bacic to enquire if it was okay that he went down to the training pitches on Calmont Road.

When he was there he met another squad member keen to make the right impression from the start: Shaun Hutchinson was company for the young midfielder as he began preparing for the new season.

“The first two weeks I had off and the second two weeks I started training,” Thompson explained. “It was a short break so not as difficult (to maintain fitness) as if we had had longer off.

on too long you get bored. I was pleased to get back but it was tough work with all the fitness testing the first day.

“I came back pretty fit, fitter than I have been in other seasons. I feel good and ready to go. I enjoy getting stuck in and getting on with it.

“During the off-season I came in a few times to keep my fitness up. I met Hutch then and the other two (new signings David Worrall and Gregg Wylde) I met on the first Friday.

“I texted Bobby to ask him if anyone was in and then I’d come in and do a bit. We’ve got good facilities available, we’ve the gym here and I did some running outside, so it was good. I was

excited to get back.”

One notable feature of Thompson’s performances last season was the energy he provided the team from the middle of the pitch, driving into tackles and bursting forward to support the attacking players, something he did more frequently as his confidence on the ball grew with the increased amount of time he spent in the side.

Thompson says the squad have come back with higher levels of fitness this season than last, which was probably helped by their shorter summer break.

Sidcup-born Thompson did force himself through one painful experience in June when he watched back the 3-1 defeat to Barnsley that denied Millwall

promotion.

He had no complaints about the result and is hoping that lessons have been learned from the experience.

“I didn’t watch the game again for a good few weeks,” Thompson said. “I wanted to clear my mind, it was a disappointing day for the club and for me as well. We didn’t turn up on the day but hopefully this season we can put that right.

“They were the better team, they turned up and played very well and we didn’t, whether it was the occasion, I don’t know.

“But it was still a good experience for us. It was my first time playing at Wembley and hopefully next time we go there we’ll play much better.”

THE NEXT wave of Millwall youngsters will be looking at Ben Thompson as the inspiration as they look to break into the first team.

A REPEAT of the first preseason friendly last season, Millwall make the short hop to Hayes Lane to take on National League Bromley on Saturday.

Last July, an own goal from Tony Craig in the 89th minute handed Bromley a 2-2 draw as eager Lions fans got a first glimpse of new signings Craig, Jordan Archer, Joe Martin and Mahlon Romeo.

Two of the players who started that day, Ed Upson and John Marquis, have moved on this summer. Lions boss Neil Harris says supporters can expect to see summer recruits Shaun Hutchinson, David Worrall and Gregg Wylde against Neil Smith’s side this weekend. Irish youngster Paul Rooney could also feature.

Millwall returned from their training camp in Portugal on Wednesday, and will be back at their training ground on Calmont Road on Friday to finalise their preparations for the encounter with Neil Smith’s side, who finished fourteenth in the National League last season.

Bromley have been busy in the transfer market this summer ahead of their attempts to reach the Football League for the first time in their history. They have signed Joe Howe, George Porter and David Martin, the latter of whom was part of the Millwall squad that won promotion from League One in 2010.

Shaun Cummings and Christian Mbulu are currently Millwall’s only long-term absentees through injury.

“We’re conscious that we want to fulfil fixtures against local sides,” Harris said.

“It’s an opportunity to link in with Dover, for example, and visit them. We have excellent relationships with local teams, whether through playing games with the clubs or players going on loan. We had good working ties with Braintree and Aldershot last year.

“If we have players that need to go out and play and are wanted by the clubs, we have good relationships with them.”

Meanwhile, Harris said there are no plans currently to replace Andy Frampton, who left his position as a first-team coach last season. U21 boss Justin Skinner will continue to help out with Harris’ squad.

MILLWALL CHIEFEXECUTIVE Andy Ambler has labelled as “mischievous” a report last Sunday that claimed Lee Gregory had handed in a transfer request at the club.

Sky Sports reported last weekend that Gregory had formally requested to leave the Lions, in order to force a move to Championship side Rotherham United.

Millwall did confirm they have so far turned down three bids from Rotherham, who seem determined to secure one of their main targets this summer. New Millers boss Alan Stubbs has also been linked with a move for Walsall striker

Tom Bradshaw.

Gregory later on Sunday posted a somewhat cryptic message on Twitter that didn’t entirely clear up the situation. The 27-year-old centre-forward was with the rest of the Millwall squad at their training camp in Portugal as speculation built at home that he had made his mind up that he wanted to move back up north.

Gregory, who was born in Sheffield, scored 27 goals in all competitions for Millwall last season and has already seen Mark Beevers get his wish to move closer to his family when he joined Bolton Wanderers earlier this month.

Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart also said this week that the club were on the verge of completing deals for their principal targets.

But Ambler told the News that there hadn’t been a

fourth bid for Gregory, who returned to London from Portugal with his teammates on Wednesday.

“We turned down a bid last week and they haven’t come back since,” Ambler said.

“The nonsense that was going on last Sunday was clearly put out by somebody being mischievous and hoping the media would pick up on it. And everyone did.

“That’s what it was, in my book.

“As far as I’m concerned, they made a bid, it wasn’t good enough, and that’s where we are.”

Millwall signed Gregory on a three-year deal from Halifax Town in 2014. He has scored 36 goals in 95 appearances for the club, but it appears the Lions have a battle on their hands to hold on to him.

Lions boss Neil Harris came within 90 minutes of guiding the club to an immediate return to the Championship in his first full season in charge, and brought through a number of inexperienced players such as Ben Thompson, Mahlon Romeo and Aiden O’Brien.

This season, the likes of midfielders Kyron Farrell and Kris Twardek as well as defender Noah Chesmain will be trying to make a first-team breakthrough, and Archer believes the younger players have the quality to play at a higher level.

“I don’t think going up would have been too soon,” Archer said. “We have a lot of great young players like Ben Thompson.

But an extra year’s experience in this league should help us.”

Archer was another player who was given his chance by Harris, and the goalkeeper literally grabbed it with both hands to firmly establish himself as the club’s first choice between the sticks.

However, the former Scotland U21 cap is not thinking about adding senior international honours to his CV just yet.

“I haven’t focused on that at all,” he stressed. “I just want to help get this club back into the Championship. Any international recognition would be a bonus. I’d obviously be delighted to be in an international squad but that’s not my decision to make. I want to keep my focus on playing for my club.”

Meanwhile, Jamie Philpot scored as Millwall lost 2-1 to Nottingham Forest in a behind-closed-doors friendly in Portugal on Tuesday.

Romeo’s international team-mate Dexter Blackstock and Oliver Burke scored the goals for Forest.

The Millwall squad and management team arrived home from their training camp on Wednesday and are back at Calmont Road on Friday to prepare for Saturday’s clash with Bromley at Hayes Lane.
