Unusually, Coyle was firm in his support for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn’s tack, claiming the Labour Party was doing everything it could to win an extension or revoke Article 50 before having a general election, differing to what Corbyn has said on other occasions about backing a poll in any event.

Ladbrokes say the Liberal Democrats are favourites to regain Simon Hughes’ former constituency in an early election – looking likely for October.

Before then Coyle has to shore up his position as he fights an internal battle to keep his seat in the face of deselection by his own party.

Two affiliates have declared their support so far – including the Co-Operatives, and his local constituency party branches will meet next week to decide whether to kickstart an open contest.

‘Rapid review’ on IVF as singles are denied

AN URGENT review has been launched by the NHS into South East London’s IVF eligibility rules, after it emerged single women and couples who weren’t living together were being refused on the grounds they would ‘disadvantage’ the child.

The policy document from NHS South East London, which covers Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bromley and Bexley, implemented a policy that refuses treatment to single women – such as those using sperm donors - or women who do not live with their partners.

The document states: “Because of the known disadvantage that providing assisted conception to a single woman would cause both the child and the mother, funding of assisted conception for single women is not available in SE London”, while “couples should be living together and in a stable relationship.”

The decision was decried by Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman, who chairs Parliament’s Human Rights Committee.

She described it is discriminatory and blasted the old-fashioned view of family life, and wrote to Matt Hancock MP, secretary of state for health

and social care, urging him to intervene.

Harman highlighted the cost of private treatment and “terrible message” the policy sent to single parents and their children: “It is nothing less than offensive to both single mothers and to the children of single mothers to assert that they exert less control on their children and that their children are a burden on society.”

Southwark CCG has apologised for the policy’s use of language, and committed to a ‘rapid review’ of its IVF policy for single women.

A spokesperson for NHS Southwark CCG told the News: “Infertility is a condition that requires investigation, management and treatment in accordance with national guidance.

“As part of the provision of prevention, treatment and care, south east London commissioners are committed to ensuring that access to NHS fertility services is provided fairly and consistently within the limited resources we have available.

“South east London CCGs follow the criteria for IVF treatment set out in the South East London Treatment Access Policy (TAP) and at present, routine funding of assisted conception for single women is not available.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

“We are sorry for any offence that has been caused by the wording in the treatment access policy and the review document referenced in the section on single women’s access to IVF. “We review and update the treatment access policy on a regular basis and we will prioritise a rapid review of the policy in relation to single women.”

The policy highlights difficulties for wouldbe parents in accessing the treatment, which can be prohibitively expensive when given privately.

Although NICE guidelines state that women under 40 should be offered three full cycles of IVF if they have not got pregnant after two years of trying, or tests show there is no chance of conceiving naturally, what treatment is available varies across regions and even London boroughs.

Just a few miles away in Croydon, for example, IVF is not available at all on the NHS. The cost of going private can be up to £5,000 or more per cycle.

A petition to Parliament demanding the end of the IVF postcode lottery, and equality of treatment, has nearly 5,000 signatures, but needs double that to gain a government response.

No indication on how many police levy will bring

THERE IS still no indication how many of Boris Johnson’s promised 20,000 extra police officers will be placed in Southwark.

As the News reported last week, Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle has called on the government to make sure Southwark benefits from the Tories’ pledge, but Southwark Police were unable to confirm any details when requested this week.

Simon Messinger, commander of Southwark and Lambeth and MPS, told the News: “We continue to work with our colleagues within the National Police Chief’s Council and the Home Office over the detail of the government’s recruitment announcement and look forward to what this will deliver for London’s policing service.”

Wholesale cuts have led police and local authorities to find alternative creative funding sources for officers and enforcement activity.

As the News has reported, the new Late Night Levy, a tax on alcohol-selling businesses open after midnight, is helping to pay for police.

Although Southwark Council has cited Mr Messinger’s support as a key factor in its introduction, when asked why Southwark police support the scheme, a spokesperson declined to comment, saying the matter was a local authority decision and not a policing one.

The levy has been criticised as an indiscriminate tax on venues, whether they are responsibly or irresponsibly run.

New landmark for Bermondsey Street

A STRIKING community art project will be coming to Bermondsey Street after a successful ‘all or nothing’ crowdfunding bid.

The Cornerstone sculpture will be installed on Bermondsey’s Whites Grounds Estate on the corner of Bermondsey Street, weighing approximately the same as three wooly mammoths.

The crowd funder had to raise £86,000 for the installation to go ahead, with pieces of the artwork being crafted by residents of the estate under the tutelage of stonemason, Austin Emery.

“Thank you so much, everyone, for your support with the crowdfunding campaign for this absolutely unique public art installation,” said residents’ group, Bermondsey Street London.

midnight deadline, hurrah! So we can all look forward to a new landmark at the heart of Bermondsey Street.”

Major donors to the artwork include City Hall, Southwark Council and Leathermarket JMB. Once completed, the artwork will range from eight-and-a-half metres long and two-and-a-half metres at its tallest point.

Mr Emery, 48, has previously unveiled a structure alongside residents of the nearby Tyers Esate

called The Shared.

“Our project helps overcome the divisive challenges of gentrification and the ever increasing social gap within inner-city multi-cultural areas,” he has previously told the News.

“By celebrating our diversity and creating opportunity for life-long established Londoners to work alongside immigrant new-comers, we form bonds based on equality, mutual respect and positive partnerships.”

LEO AND ISABELLA have been revealed as the most popular baby names in Southwark last year according to newly published data.

The stats, from the ONS, show that 28 baby boys were called Leo in Southwark in 2018, claiming the most popular choice in the borough.

Meanwhile Isabella was the favourite for new Southwark parents of baby girls, with twenty children being given that name in the year.

Nationally, Oliver was the most popular boy’s name in England and Wales for the sixth year running, while Olivia remained the third most popular girl’s name for the third year running.

“Oliver and Olivia remained the most popular baby names in 2018, although

there are the first signs that Oliver’s sixyear reign as the number one name for boys is under threat,” said Nick Stripe of the ONS. “Arthur surged into the top 10 boys’ names for the first time since the 1920s, and Ada jumped into the girls’ top 100 for the first time in a century too, both perhaps inspired by characters in the BBC TV drama Peaky Blinders.”

But among the other noticeable

changes was the halving of the number of baby girls called Alexa since 2017 – partly due to Amazon’s voice activated assistant of the same name.

New entries into the most popular 100 baby names in England and Wales in 2018 included Grayson, Jasper, Rowan, Tobias, Sonny and Dominic.

For girls, new entries into the top 100 names included Ada, Delilah, Ayla, Zoe, Margot and Felicity.

Figures released by the Greater London Assembly this week show that the number of pubs in Southwark, 175, did not change between 2017 and 2018.

This means Southwark’s pubs account for around five per cent of all the pubs in the capital.

Neighbouring Lewisham saw the capital’s greatest percentage increase in the number of pubs with an additional twenty boozers opening in the borough in the year.

Meanwhile east London’s Newham saw the greatest fall, losing ten per cent of all its pubs between 2017-18.

However, only a third of boroughs saw their pub numbers grow – with thirteen of them seeing their number of boozers shrink.

Previous research had revealed the number of pubs in London had fallen by a quarter since 2001 as publicans struggle with high rents.

“London pubs have been a key part of our capital’s heritage for generations, helping to unite Londoners and acting as a vital hub in the community,” said Mayor Sadiq Khan.

“Sadly their numbers have been falling for decades, which is why I’ve been doing all I can to support the trade and turn this tide of closures.”

It comes amid community efforts in Southwark to fight-back against pub closures in the borough. Among them are an effort to re-open the former Old Justice pub as a co-operatively owned boozer in Bermondsey Wall East.

SANTANDER BIKES will be coming to Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, Mayor Sadiq Khan has pledged – but questions have been raised about the scheme’s announcement.

Mr Khan revealed the roll-out as he visited the Rotherhithe roundabout last Tuesday, August 27, to see ongoing work on Cycleway 4.

The major project will construct 10km of segregated cycle track from Tower Bridge to Greenwich, with work currently ongoing along Bermondsey’s Tooley Street and Jamaica Road.

“Expanding the Santander Cycles scheme to Bermondsey and Rotherhithe for the first time will provide a further boost for cycling in south east London,” said Mr Khan.

Cllr Damian O’Brien, the transport spokesperson for the Southwark Lib Dems who have campaigned for the roll-out of bike hires across the peninsula, said: “This news has come as quite a shock.

“I would have expected such a major initiative to have been consulted on and for the council to have been aware of it, and they know nothing about it.

“We are massive supporters of an extension of the Cycle Hire Scheme into Bermondsey and Rotherhithe but don’t understand how this announcement has arrived out of the blue.”

In response to questions about the funding and number of docking stations on the scheme, David Eddington, TfL’s Head of Cycle Hire, said the quango would fund an initial five docking stations and their

A REPEAT sex offender, who sexually assaulted a lone sleeping woman on a train from London Bridge, has been jailed.

Reece Francis, 27, of Compton Place, Bexley, pleaded guilty to sexual assault and for breaching a Sexual Harms Prevention Order at Blackfriars’ Crown Court on Friday August 16.

Now Francis must spend 21 months behind bars.

The court heard that the victim, who was on her own, had fallen asleep against the window of a train from London Bridge at around midnight, May 25.

But when she woke up, Francis was sat next to her and was sexually assaulting her. She rushed to another carriage before reporting the assault to police, and Francis left the train at

REPEAT SEX PEST JAILED

In 2017, the 27-year-old had previously sexually assaulted a sleeping woman on a Dartford train.

Just over two weeks later, in November 2017, Francis subjected another woman to a sexual assault while she was sleeping on a train from Cannon Street. The court heard the victim woke to find Francis exposing himself and touching himself inappropriately.

He was convicted of both offences in January 2018 and sentenced to 54 weeks in prison.

As a result of the convictions, Francis was subject to an order banning him from travelling on public transport

between 11pm and 6am, and sitting next to or opposite any lone female on any form of public transport, both of which he breached.

Detectives swooped to arrest the sex pest after recognising him on CCTV. “Francis is an extremely dangerous individual who clearly has a habit of preying on sleeping women on public transport,” Detective Sergeant Andrew Edwards said.

“His offences are abhorrent and I am relieved to see him back behind bars as I’m sure his victims will be too.

“I hope this sends a strong and clear message that we take every report of sexual offences on the railway seriously, and it absolutely won’t be tolerated."

His Sexual Harm Prevention Order remains in place and has been extended to five years.

The funding of further stations along the route would come after discussions with the council over funding, he said.

The stations are planned along Jamaica Road, Rotherhithe roundabout and near Canada Water and Bermondsey stations.

Labour’s three councillors in Rotherhithe ward said they were “really pleased” that TfL had listened to their campaigns to extend the hire scheme to Canada Water.

“The new docking stations in Rotherhithe will make cycling more accessible for our residents,” said Cllrs “However, we also need TfL to bring back the plans for the Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf Bridge.

“We want people to be able to pick up a Santander cycle in Rotherhithe, cycle it across the river and return it to a docking station in Canary Wharf.”

Cabinet member, Cllr Johnson Situ, also added the council would “continue to work with TFL to extend the Cycle hire scheme further into the borough.”

Work began on the route in July, and is expected to finish in April next year.

Motorists should expect particularly long delays on Tooley Street and Jamaica Road itself, as well as the areas approaching Rotherhithe roundabout from the Tunnel and nearby Lower Road.

When completed, Cycleway 4 will form a continuous segregated cycle route from Tower Bridge to Greenwich.

Mr Khan has also said that construction of the next section of the route, at Deptford, would begin later this year. It originally had a start date of April 2020.

Nine charged after police drugs raids

A POLICE swoop across Southwark and Lambeth has led to nine charged including alleged drug dealers from Bermondsey, Peckham and Surrey Quays.

Twenty-four people were initially arrested after a series of dawn raids in August with the Met confirming nine had now been charged.

The four from Southwark are Ricardo Gayle, aged 25, from Concorde Way in Surrey Quays, who was charged on Friday, August 23, with two counts of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs and possession of crack cocaine with intent to supply He was joined by Kemar Smith, 30, of Law Street in Bermondsey, who was charged with two counts of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs, and possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply Also charged was Rushard Brown, 23, of Hastings Close in Peckham, who faces two counts of being concerned in the supply of class A drugs, and possession of crack cocaine and heroin with intent to supply.

On Wednesday, August 21, twentyyear-old Joel Stennett, from Rommany Road in Gispsy Hill was charged with two counts of conspiracy to supply class A drugs.

Teenager stabbed A TEENAGER was stabbed in Kennington Road on Monday night.

Police say they were called at 11.30 on Monday, September 2, after reports of a stabbing. The teen, whose age has not been confirmed, is said to be in a stable condition. His injuries are believed to be ‘not life-threatening’.

There have been no arrests and inquiries continue. Anyone with information should call 101.

£83M SE1 development given go ahead

AN £83MILLION development of luxury flats for Bermondsey’s Tower Bridge Road has been given planning permission.

The Newhams Yard scheme, at 151-157 Tower Bridge Road, will see three new buildings of up to ten storeys arranged around a courtyard, with retail, office and restaurant space on the ground floor.

Approved plans for the development, close to Bermondsey Street and Tanner Street, include 86 ‘deluxe’ apartments, ranging from studios, one-bed, twobeds and three-bedroom homes.

A 143 ‘aparthotel’ residence apartments that residents can check out

of as they would in a hotel – is also included, alongside a café, co-working space and a ‘state-of-the-art’ gym.

David Galman, Sales Director at Galliard Homes commented, which proposed the scheme alongside Acorn Property Group, said the company was ‘delighted’ to be given planning permission.

“The scheme is in a prominent position providing easy access to Tanner Street and Bermondsey Street and is immersed within the vibrant local Bermondsey community,” he said.

“The scheme will create a new communal hub for the local area with a variety of cafes, restaurants and retail opportunities which we anticipate will be very popular with local residents.”

MERTON AND THE BANJO TRIAL THAT SAW HIS BERMONDSEY GREAT-GRANNY JAILED

COMEDIAN PAUL Merton’s discovered his Bermondsey ancestors include a teenage busker imprisoned for her part in a violent robbery with a banjo during his appearance on BBC One’s Who Do You Think You Are.

At a trip to Southwark Archives, Merton learned that his father’s side of the family – the Martin’s originally hailed from Bermondsey.

His grandmother, Elizabeth Lawford, died four years before he was born. Born in 1903 she was one of twelve children. Her father was a ‘car man’ – who delivered items via horse and cart.

Further back, Merton’s greatgreat-great grandfather William Simmonds, who died in 1886, was a musician. As no records survive of him performing in the West End, it is likely he was a street and pub performer.

His son, also named William, was also a musician, and married a ‘vocalist’, likely a busker, named Caroline Plunkett. They were poor – as evidenced by her time at Mint Street workhouse, where she gave birth to their first son.

Although there is no record of her performing on stage, Caroline did leave a record of her trial at the Old Bailey, where she was accused of robbing a pocket handkerchief

and six shillings and a sixpence from a couple in Norwood, with a gang who were accused of attacking them on their way home from a pub.

The only thing she said at the stand was: “I didn’t touch the woman” after it was claimed her accomplice hit the man over the head with the banjo as Caroline lunged forward to scratch his wife across the face.

Although the prosecution’s case didn’t stack up, Caroline was sent to prison for six months.

As was decreed at the time, all prisoners were forced to stay in solitary confinement except for one hour of single file, silent exercise in the yard. During their time inside, they had to entirely cover their faces. She was just fourteen.

Caroline was released in 1868, and two years later married Merton’s great-great grandfather, with whom she continued performing and had many children.

“It is so extraordinary that such a young person goes through this huge contrast in life,” Merton said.

“She didn’t let that define her, she goes on to have a wonderful life.”

Reflecting on his family’s musical history he said: “It’s great to learn that there’s a performing gene somewhere back in in my deep past - that I wasn’t the first one to embarrass myself publicly.”

Watchdog clears officers

A WATCHDOG has cleared police officers of any wrongdoing over a Bermondsey man who died after swallowing cocaine while in custody at Walworth police station.

A jury inquest into the death of Oghene Abboh, reached a narrative verdict last Tuesday, finding he had died of multiple organ failure as a result of swallowing the drug.

An investigation by the police watchdog, the IOPC, into officers’ conduct surrounding the 26-year-old’s death – which finished in December last year but published after the inquest concluded - found that officers had not breached professional standards.

Now the IOPC has issued a warning of the dangers of swallowing drugs to avoid prosecution following the ‘tragic’ death of Mr Abboh in March last year.

“The death of Mr Abboh was tragic and my thoughts are with his family, friends and all those affected,” said IOPC Regional Director Sal Naseem.

“This death once again reveals the huge dangers in people trying to conceal illegal drugs from police by swallowing them.

“Our investigation revealed that despite officers’ best efforts both before and after Mr Abboh ingested drugs, they and the medical staff who attended him were unable to save his life.”

Officers at the station were ‘polite, informative, respectful and courteous’ in their dealings with Mr Abboh, found the investigation, and had followed correct policies in attempting to treat him.

The 26-year-old had been stopped and searched by police on Walworth’s Brandon Street after they observed him driving in an ‘illogical’ pattern shortly after 11am on March 30 last year.

Officers found an illegal pocket knife in his car, and arrested ‘compliant’ Mr Abboh, taking him to Walworth police station for custody.

While booked into custody, CCTV showed Mr Abboh reaching into his waistband, and potentially retrieving

an ‘item’, which was later visible in his mouth.

Police restrained him on the ground, warning him that his actions could be fatal, the inquest found.

An ambulance was called, and police strip searched him while waiting for it to arrive – but found nothing.

Mr Abboh denied having swallowed anything.

His vital signs were checked en-route to hospital and were in a ‘normal range’, while officers accompanying him urged him to provide details to medical staff – even moving out of earshot to give him the privacy to do so.

But within minutes of arriving at St Thomas’s Hospital, he suffered a seizure while in triage in the accident and emergency department, the inquest established.

Despite the best efforts of hospital staff, Mr Abboh’s condition deteriorated and he died shortly before 7am the following morning.

Mr Naseem added: “We work hard with police forces to ensure officers are trained on best practice when it is suspected that a person may have swallowed an item.

“However, when someone chooses to swallow an item to try and hide it from the police they risk fatal consequences and this can never be a worthwhile gamble to take.”

The inquest also found that the decision by officers to use a ‘front stack’ handcuff position was appropriate, “given the compliant nature and physical stature of Mr Abboh.”

The watchdog’s drugs warning comes after a series of cases of individuals dying from swallowing drugs, including Rashan Charles in Dalston, east London and Edir Frederico Da Costa in Beckton, also in east London.

A NEW campaign to raise awareness of sickle cell disease and encourage more black blood donors to come forward was launched in Peckham last week by a ‘sickler’ from London, who says the condition won’t stop him ‘living my best life’.

Twenty-five-year-old account manager, Chris Abdullahi, launched The Sound of Sickle at Peckham Levels last Wednesday evening with a panel discussion about the impact of the disease, and its treatment.

Chris was diagnosed with sickle cell at birth, and started experiencing symptoms at eleven months when his joints swelled up and became painful.

“When I was younger, I hated myself for having the disease and I never knew why I was so different from other kids,” he said.

“They could do activities like run and swim but I had to be mindful in case I had a crisis.”

Sickle cell disease is the name for a group of inherited health conditions that affect the red blood cells. The most serious type is called sickle cell anaemia.

People with the disease produce unusually shaped red blood cells that can cause problems because they do not live as long as healthy blood cells.

The main symptoms of the disease cause painful episodes called ‘sickle cell crisis’ and an increased risk of serious infections.

Chris didn’t want to let the condition hold him back, but in his mid-teens, he did experience a crisis that developed into Bronchopneumonia and gallstones.

“I coughed up tonnes of blood and my body was just unable to defend itself,” he recalled.

“I ended up having to undergo surgery to remove my gall bladder and then I had complications with my chest, which almost left me on the brink of death.

“It was the scariest experience I had ever been through in my entire life.”

Though the marketing graduate rarely falls ill, he still experiences regular flare-ups which surprise those who are unaware of his diagnosis or have limited knowledge of the condition.

Whilst Chris was studying for his marketing degree, he noticed the lack of awareness and misinformation about the disease – and idea of The Sound of Sickle was born.

“Most people don’t have a clue about the illness so at workplaces I used to keep it quiet,” he said.

“I never used to disclose it in interviews but as I have got older, I have learnt it is better to tell managers ahead of time so they are aware of my flare-ups or my down days.

“When I tell people I have sickle cell, the responses are hilarious.

“Most of the time it is the same thing, like ‘Eh what? You don’t look ill’ or ‘seriously?

But you don’t have yellow eyes!’

“The common one is ‘Oh really? I’ve heard of that but I don’t know what it is.’

“That’s when it hit me and I felt like it was a part of my purpose to educate others.

“That’s why I decided to start the TSS charity. Everyone experiences sickle cell in a variety of ways.

“What one sickler may go through could be entirely different to another sickler.

The event gave people the opportunity to find out their blood type and register to become a donor, with NHS Blood Donation staff on hand to give finger prick tests.

According to the NHS, 40,000 more black donors of all groups are needed to meet the increasing demand for a better-matched blood and a special subtype of blood more common in black people.

However, only one per cent of people who give blood in England are black.

Chris, who loves organising events and enjoys traveling to party locations like Ibiza, said: “I’m often described as a person that is so happy and healthy, but I just live my best life and I know my limits and push them regularly, but I love it.

“However, what I can handle is different.

Another friend of mine receives blood transfusions weekly, whereas I do not.

“It is incredibly important to educate yourself on the disease for yourself and the next generation - especially if you are black.

“I have received a blood transfusion once in my life but I know people who receive blood regularly.

“So it’s really intense for those guys and we need to receive blood from like for like people.

“Setting up the charity has been stressful but I only really want to spread awareness about Sickle Cell and get people thinking about donating blood.”

Boy breaks both legs after ‘falling’ out of funfair ride

A TWELVE year old boy was hospitalised with two broken legs, a broken hand, and a head wound after ‘falling’ from a fairground ride at Benson’s family funfair in Brockwell Park last week.

Police and paramedics were called after 12-year-old Theo Shaw from Herne Hill fell from the ‘Extreme’ ride in the early evening of Tuesday, August 27 while visiting the fair with friends.

His mother, Aileen O’Brien, has been left dismayed by the response of the fair owners and Lambeth Council.

Despite the seriousness of his injuries, the fair remained open – with just the ride closed.

On Monday she tweeted: “How am

I meant to feel driving to pick up a wheelchair for my son when passing Benson’s fair still going at the park?”

Lambeth Council and the government’s Health and Safety Executive have said there will be an investigation into the terrifying incident, but this could take months.

A council spokesperson told the News: “We are aware of this incident and wish the teenager a speedy recovery.

“We are working with the HSE and the police to investigate the cause of this incident, and to determine what action needs to be taken.”

The Health and Safety Executive told the News it attended the scene and although enquiries were at an early stage, “there will be an investigation”.

The News contacted Benson’s Family Funfair for comment, but did not receive a reply.

ALGAE ALERT

POSTERS HAVE been put up in Burgess Park advising people to keep themselves and their pets from coming into contact with the water due to naturally occurring algae.

Southwark Council said the algae is being monitored for bacteria levels and current readings show the risk of coming into contact with harmful bacteria is low.

But as a precaution the council is encouraging people to keep a wide berth - including their pets.

Cllr Rebecca Lury, Cabinet Member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said: “Low level, naturally occurring algae blooms have been identified on the lake.

"These are extremely common in the UK this year and we are currently working with the Environment Agency and monitoring the water.

“Initial analysis of our water sample indicates that the risk of potentially harmful bacteria is low.

"But, as a precaution, we have put signs up around the lake, asking people to protect themselves and their animals, by keeping away from the algae and the water.”

Southwark IVF scandal has ‘no place in modern Britain’ N OT BEING able to have the baby you long for causes untold misery and suffering. IVF is a medical advance which has ended this misery for thousands.

So I was appalled that NHS South East London has adopted a policy to deny single women IVF treatment. To deny this treatment to single women is not only cruel, it’s discriminatory.

NHS South East London’s guidelines lay down that women won’t get fertility treatment unless they are in in a “stable relationship” claiming that single mothers “place a greater burden on society in general”.

But there is no evidence that children brought up by unmarried mothers do worse than those brought up by those who are married.

If the NHS Commissioners sat in a classroom in Southwark they would not be able to tell which child lives with one parent and which lives with two.

With 1 in 3 marriages ending in divorce and many lone parents subsequently marrying, it is

wrong to seek to justify denying IVF to those who are single at the time they seek treatment.

This will only deepen the divide between those who can afford to pay for IVF and those who can’t.

Unmarried women who can pay will still be able to get IVF but those who work hard but are on lower incomes will not.

And if that wasn’t enough, what a terrible message this policy sends to all lone mothers and to all the children of lone mothers that there is something wrong with them.

It is a particular affront for NHS South East London to have done this in view of the fact that 10 per cent of children in Southwark are

being brought up by lone parents.

This is a slap in the face to all of them and their children.

I thought we had long ago recognised that families come in all shapes and sizes and that there’s no one way to have your family in Britain in 2019.

Loving, solid families comprise single parent families, married heterosexual parents and same-sex couples. This is one of the great freedoms of our society in the UK. We cannot allow government cuts to the NHS to mean we are rationing services on a discriminatory basis.

s we report this week, a study shows that the number of pubs in Southwark has not changed in net terms between 2017 and 2018.

The study defines pubs as those businesses who define themselves primarily as a pub – meaning some pubs, such as hotels, or indeed brewery tap-rooms, may not be counted. It has been hailed by the Mayor and City Hall as evidence that London’s long-term boozer decline has been arrested for the time being.

We welcome this news: pubs are not just places to grab a pint, but often focal points of the community.

The demise of local watering-holes is always a blow, and any data showing that their numbers have not thinned yet further is good news for residents.

However, as to be expected from its methodology, the data does not tell the complete story. To be sure, there have been no net losses in the number of the borough’s 175 pubs in the past year.

But there has still been significant changes and losses in Southwark’s pub scene.

While a new pub may have sprung up to take its place elsewhere in Southwark, the closure of the China Hall in Rotherhithe earlier this year was a devastating blow, not least to its landlords who had to forgo their business and home of over thirty years.

In nearby Bermondsey, the Queen Victoria – said to be the inspiration behind the famous EastEnders boozer – changed hands after being brought back in-house by the brewery.

The prospect of losing their lease after being bought out by the brewery is a common concern of publicans in the borough – and will not show up on the statistics.

More broadly, landlord groups have raised fears over the introduction of a late night levy by town hall chiefs, which will add an extra tax burden on any establishment serving alcohol past midnight.

Compare and contrast this with the stats in our neighbouring borough, Lewisham.

While Southwark recorded no net loss, Lewisham recorded an almost thirty per cent increase in its number of pubs in just one year.

The picture then is not simple – and the authorities cannot afford to rest on their laurels when it comes to Southwark’s old-school pubs.

FORMER CONSERVATIVE party leadership contender, Rory Stewart MP, was the subject of some mockery after appearing distinctly grumpy-faced in a photograph last week.

He did not make the same mistake again: pictured in Peckham on August 30, Rory made sure to have his pearliest smile on display.

One group of park goers who had been enjoying the sunshine in Camberwell Green had a novel solution to the issue of overcrowded bins.

Instead of attempting to collect all the park’s litter and putting them in the full bin, parkusers instead uprooted a tree and used every single one of its branches to hold a bottle or can – before then ramming the tree itself neatly into the bin.

Residents were divided – ‘treemendous’ joked one, while another pondered whether it counts as littering with no litter being on the ground.

He previously hit headlines after branding Chris Williamson, the MP suspended from the Labour party, a “sh**”.

SJ murder trial due to start

A MAN who died after a double stabbing in Elephant and Castle Underground station has been named as 24-year-old Norman Bertran-Tavarez.

TWO ALLEGED killers - one of them a 16-year-old – were due to go on trial accused of murdering Joshua Boadu in Bermondsey as the News went to press.

Potential jurors were told Mr Boadu, 23 – known affectionately as ‘SJ’ - suffered multiple stab wounds to his chest, shoulder and arm.

Denilson Davis, 21, and the 16-year-old, who cannot be named, are accused of murdering Mr Boadu on Linsey Street shortly after 6pm on June 11 last year.

A panel of 14 - eight men and six women including two reserves - were told Davis accepts he was present at the scene but

denies involvement, while the youth denies he was there.

Judge Mark Lucraft, QC, said the allegation was one of murder and Mr Boadu suffered injuries to his chest, left shoulder and right arm. The judge also said the two suspects were part of a gang of three.

He asked the panel to go home and make sure there would be no issues with them sitting until the trial concludes on Friday, September 27.

The case was due to open on Wednesday, September 3, once the twelve final jurors were selected and sworn. Davis, of Hemel Hempstead, Hertfordshire, and the 16year-old, deny murder.

He succumbed to his injuries in hospital on Monday morning.

The News understands he was originally from the Dominican Republic and was living in Camberwell.

The other victim, a 25-year-old, is now said to be in a stable condition.

Two 20-year-old men, both from Southwark, have been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder and released on bail.

Detectives are still appealing for witnesses to come forward as their hunt for the killer, or killers, continues.

They confirmed they were “keeping an open mind” as to whether an incident earlier in the day – when a group of men were reported to have aggressively threatened shopkeepers and security staff in Elephant and Castle shopping centre - was linked to the

murder.

Both men are believed to have been stabbed inside the underground station after a fight between two groups of men.

Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn said: "This was a shocking act of violence and we are working tirelessly to identify and trace those responsible.

"While the investigation is still at an early stage, at this time we believe there was an altercation between two groups of men inside the Underground station and it is here the victims sustained their injuries before making their way onto the street.

"My team are painstakingly reviewing any CCTV evidence, to understand exactly who is responsible for this senseless killing.

"We continue to have a number of reassurance patrols in the area so passengers can expect to see an increased police presence on their journey.

PARKING ZONE PLAN FOR THE BLUE AREA IN BERMONDSEY

TOWN HALL officials are proposing a controlled parking zone (CPZ) for the area surrounding Bermondsey’s Blue.

A parking study, with the aim of introducing a CPZ, is being consulted upon, affecting the area between St James’s Road, Lynton Road and the railway arches.

Officials say the move is necessary following the introduction of parking controls in nearby Thorburn Square in October 2018 to address “increased parking pressure.”

“The council has received a number of requests for parking controls to be introduced in your area as well as a petition from residents south of The Blue,” states council literature advertising the consultation on the parking changes.

“Local residents are finding it very hard to park near their homes or to exit and enter their drives which is causing significant stress and

inconvenience.

“We have also had reports of businesses finding it hard to park in the area and of commuters taking up space that could be used by visitors.”

Under the parking study, a questionnaire has been sent to all the addresses living within the proposed zone, asking whether they would like a controlled parking zone and of what kind.

A consultation into the plans which opened on August 31 closes on September 22. It can be found online by searching south east Bermondsey CPZ. Officials also said that the proposed boundary of the parking changes was not fixed and could be changed or not introduced at all depending on consultation responses.

Consultation responses are expected to be finalised in autumn, before being sent to council cabinet in late autumn or early winter.

If approved, any changes would be expected to come in around spring or early summer next year.

Twenty-eight-year-old admits rape and kidnap in the Borough

A 28-YEAR-OLD man has pleaded guilty to rape and kidnap after attacking two women in Borough.

Wilfred Marodza (pictured), of Kingston Road, Eastbourne, pleaded guilty at Inner London Crown Court yesterday (Monday, September 2).

His first victim, a 21-year-old woman, had been walking home on Great Dover Street shortly after 2.30am on Saturday, July 20 after a night out.

The court heard that she was approached from behind by Marodza, and marched to a nearby wooded area – where she was threatened and raped multiple times.

The woman managed to escape and ran to a nearby street where a passing motorist stopped.

Marodza is said to have told the motorist they were having a domestic argument, before the victim got into the car and was taken to a local police station.

The victim was so traumatised, said police, she ran into an adjacent fast food restaurant, whose staff called officers.

Only an hour later, a second woman, aged 25, was waiting for a bus on Borough High Street when she was approached by Marodza.

He began speaking to her by offering to escort her to a cab office, heard the court, but soon grabbed her and pulled her into a side street.

He then threatened her, telling her to do as she was told, before pushing her to ground. The victim screamed and Marodza fled the scene.

An urgent investigation by the Met meant Marodza was identified and arrested later that same day.

He was charged on Wednesday, 24 July and remanded in custody.

Despite mobile phone and CCTV evidence linking him to the attacks, Marodza had answered ‘no comment’ during interviews about his offences.

"These two young women were subjected to ordeals that no person should ever have to endure. Marodza is a dangerous predator whose actions left both victims in fear of their lives,” said investigating officer Detective Constable Jonny Norman.

“Marodza will now, I hope, face a substantial amount of time behind bars, and I am sure London will be all the safer for it.

“I would like to thank the investigative team who worked tirelessly to track and arrest Marodza.

“Most importantly I would like to thank the victims, whose bravery and courage in supporting our investigation has been instrumental. I hope that, in time, this will allow them some form of closure and that they can begin to move on with their lives.”

Marodza pleaded guilty to four counts of rape, one count of kidnap in relation to the second attack, and one count of committing an offence with intent to commit a sexual offence.

Raucous entertainment at Southbank’s Rouge

WITH THE summer drawing to a close I went to the Underbelly’s Speigeltent on the Southbank for an evening of cabaret entertainment. This time in the form of Rouge, an adult circus show from Australia, fresh off the back of winning Best Circus at the 2019 FringeWorld Weeklies, writes Christopher Peacock...

Advertised as ‘subversive and supremely sexy circus’ I was certainly intrigued as to what the show might bring. Unfortunately, upon arrival I was informed that the opera singer among the cast had come down with laryngitis and was unable to perform. However, she would still take part in the show and soldier on. So cliché became reality for the guys in the troupe because ‘the show must go on’.

This medical upset inevitably meant that the running time was reduced to around 55 minutes, which certainly didn’t reduce the enjoyment of the show. From the start there were displays of excellent strength work on the floor and on the silks and rings. Even with a couple of hula-hoops

mishaps you were still in awe of the incredible high level of high-energy skill. The only area where the show slowed down a touch was the transitions between acts, the necessary stage handling to set up each act was, at times, a bit clunky. I can only assume that with the absence of one of the main acts of the show, what we were watching was not originally how it was meant to be.

Certainly not afraid to titillate and create a raucous atmosphere, Rouge certainly entertains.

There is some nudity and strobe lighting, which makes it not suitable for everyone. Nevertheless, it is all done with joviality and a carefree attitude, which, with humour at its heart, broadens the appeal of the show.

Secret River carries you away to another world

I WASN’T convinced about seeing The Secret River, and when the first lines uttered were in a form of Australian Aborigine I was ready to bound out of the Olivier Theatre like a kangaroo on out of date Fosters.

But I stayed and got to see a phenomenal piece of work, writes Michael Holland...

The drama was heightened and, perhaps, made even more emotional than the subject already was by the fact that Ningali Lawford-Wolf, the Narrator, died suddenly during the play’s run in Edinburgh last week. Pauline Whyman was quickly flown over from Melbourne to learn and perform the role.

The Secret River, adapted from Kate Grenville’s novel, tells of two families divided by their cultures and land. It is a tough look back into Australia’s dark past - and Britain’s.

Rotherhithe criminal William Thornhill is transported and takes his wife Sally and

children along with him. After many years of hard work and showing his rehabilitation, William earns his pardon and hears that if he stakes a claim on a plot merely by calling it his own, then that land is his. But he finds that the land is not his to take; others live there and have done for millennia.

The area that Britain’s dregs tried to settle was a lawless place, where racism was rife and the indigenous people were treated no better than animals. Many had learnt to keep a buffer between them and the tribespeople with guns, whips and vicious dogs, although some longterm settlers had learnt that a little give and take was all it needed for everyone to live together in a kind of harmony.

The Thornhills were honest, hard-working folk who had believed the tales of free land and the chance to be someone, all of which they had never enjoyed in London. So he laid his rucksack down on the bend in the river and called the surrounding 100 acres

Thornhill Creek.

Members of the local Dharug tribe soon come to investigate, spears at the ready, but the language barrier kept communication to a minimum. The Thornhills warily soldiered on and before long Dick Thornhill, William’s youngest, soon made friends with the Aboriginal children, playing freely as kids do. Next, the womenfolk came together to exchange food and clothes, and all this while the men ranted about ‘the blacks’ and ‘savages’ over glasses of rum.

More prisoners arrived, though William, with an air of faux superiority, made an old friend address him as Mr Thornhill when he gave him work on his ‘property’. But any upward mobility was just in William’s head, as it was the convicts who were the savages, while the Dharug were majestic in how they carried and conducted themselves. Even in the face of lethal firepower that they could never overcome, they would never lose. Their dignity and

honesty would see to that, even if it has taken centuries of rewriting and correcting history.

Notwithstanding almost every cast member having to produce an accent not their own, the Sydney Theatre Company has excelled itself here. The performances were tremendous. The set evoked a cruel outback, and the music and singing was just beautiful. Isaac Hayward’s one man band of instruments created such a sad and haunting atmosphere it was difficult not to get emotional at the play’s end.

As in the Britain of today, the sensible in The Secret River were led by fools into making foolish decisions that they would live with for the rest of their lives.

What’s next at Surrey Quays?

THE FINAL piece of the community artwork jigsaw at Rod Kitson's Machines For Living In exhibition has been completed by this creative duo, Henry and Matthew. Kitson now wants the community to decide what the next interactive project should be at his open studio in Surrey Quays now that the management have asked him to stay onsite indefinitely, writes Michael Holland...

So far visitors have - in one square foot canvases - painted an intricately patterned rug that lies on the studio-gallery floor, and created their own screen printed T-shirts, but the artist wants something new and exciting to take this project to the next level.

'I was thinking about a life drawing class,' he says, 'but the opportunities are endless now that Surrey Quays Shopping Centre have asked me to continue here, so that's why I want the community to come up with ideas for what they would want from a community art centre... It's been so successful so far that it will be great to take it further,' he says excitedly.

'No one gets judged on their skills, just encouraged to have a go,' he claims.

'Parents have returned to say how much more interested they and their children had become in art since visiting and having a go themselves: One dad said that his whole family now look at art differently since they were here and painted a couple of canvases!'

Rod Kitson explained that his exhibition is not about his own ego, and not about people coming to the gallery to look at his work, but about people coming to take up a brush themselves. He says the finished piece of 24 one foot square individual paintings is about the community, and not just the artwork. 'People have come together to create this work and they should be proud of that,' he de-clares with the passion of a true artist.

Taking a turn around graveyard

A GROUP of local history and wildlife enthusiasts have created a self-guided walking tour Camberwell Old Cemetery, highlighting the history of its landscape and the stories of those buried in its grounds.

So far, visitors can see thirty different graves and memorials of note, and learn more about the trees, meadows and sites of now-lost buildings.

Alongside local politicians and the odd MP, there were also more radical, non- establishment figures, and cultural icons from all over the world – who played a part in some of the biggest conflicts and political upheavals in the last hundred years.

You may not know that Southwark has a historic link to Armenia.

In the cemetery, a memorial commemorates three Armenian exiles, seen as martyrs, who were assassinated in Peckham Rye and Nunhead in 1093: Tigran Krikorian, Arani Krikorian and Sagatiel Sagouni.

All three were members of the proindependence Hentchakist Party, and killed by member of a rival political faction.

Between the fourth and 19th centuries, Armenia was conquered and ruled by various imperial dynasties from the Persians and Byzantines to the Russian Czars and Ottomans.

Throughout the 1800s and early 1900s, it remained divided under Ottoman and Russian imperial rule, but the nationalist movement was growing.

They exiles met at the Armenian Club in Peckham Rye, which was a front for their political activities fighting for independence.

George Yanni, who was convicted of their murders, is also buried in the cemetery.

It wasn’t until 1991 that Armenia gained true independence – with the fall of the Iron Curtain.

Before then, its people faced much suffering during a genocide when up to 1.5 million were deported from Anatolia to present-day Syria or

massacred by the Ottoman authorities between 1915-21, and further invasions

by Turkey and the Bolsheviks, before annexation into the USSR. Another nationalist buried in the cemetery campaigned for independence a little closer to home. Although Southwark’s Irish heritage is well documented, it has a particularly close link to Hurling.

Liam MacCarthy (1853-1928), was a businessman born in Southwark to Irish parents from Cork, a fluent Irish speaker, and Irish nationalist who owned a ‘fancy box’ factory in Peckham called St Brigid’s works.

A keen supporter of Gaelic sports, in

particular hurling which he played on Clapham Common, MacCarthy was chairman for the London GAA county board for a decade, where his fellow board members included Michael Collins and Sam Maguire.

MacCarthy created and donated a trophy to the Gaelic Athletic Association for the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship, the eponymous Liam MacCarthy Cup. After he died in East Dulwich, in 1928, the association erected a monument on his grave in recognition of his support, which includes portraits of those who joined 1916’s Easter Rising.

Throughout the 1900s many exiles and refugees found a home in Southwark – including those to flee Russia after the revolution.

Alexander Dourof ended his days better known as the owner of Dourof’s Carpet Warehouse on Rushey Green in Catford.

But he had a very different start in life.

Born in 1881 in Russia, Alexander’s Dourof family were part of Russia’s Royal Circus, and performed for the Czar.

A famous family of animal trainers,who escaped to England in 1917 after the Bolsheviks took power in the revolution, Alexander’s skill

was as a sword swallower.

Eventually Alexander settled in Peckham where he gave up performing to become a carpet merchant.

He did, however, still put his talents to good use – helping Guy’s Hospital develop a new type of stomach pump.

Alexander died in 1949. Inscribed on his memorial is the description: ‘A Great Showman, and Last of the Sword Swallowers’.

Southwark Council hereby GIVES FURTHER NOTICE that it has approved under section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the provision of raised ‘zebra’ pedestrian crossings at the following locations. Zig-zag markings, on which vehicles would be prohibited from stopping at all times, are defined for each crossing as the ‘controlled area’:- BELLENDEN ROAD, the centre of which would be located 7.5m north of the north-western kerb-line build-out of Chadwick Road the controlled area would be 8m north of this crossing and 4m south of this crossing; CHADWICK ROAD, the centre of which would be located at the common boundary of Nos. 61 and 63 (Windsor Court) Chadwick Road the controlled area would be 8m east of this crossing and 4m west of this crossing; HOLLY GROVE the centre of which would be located 5m east of the eastern kerb-line build-out of Bellenden Road the controlled area would be 8m south-west of this crossing and 4m north-east of this crossing; and LYNDHURST WAY the centre of which would be located 7m north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Holly Grove the controlled area would be 4m south-east of this crossing and 12m north-west of this crossing.

SURREY CHIEF executive Richard Gould has hailed his county’s achievement in attracting a total of 165,461 people through the Kia Oval gates for this season’s Vitality Blast.

Including all revenue streams generated, each of Surrey’s seven home games was worth approximately £1million to the club.

Gould believes that Surrey’s recordbreaking summer, with the club’s overall Blast attendances up by 15 per cent on 2018, was also a reflection of the continued growth in popularity of the competition throughout the

“Effectively, six out of our seven home matches in the south group were sell-outs, with the other game watched by almost a capacity crowd too,” he said.

“Additionally, of our 13 group games home and away – we had one washed out – there were 11 attended by full house crowds.

“Ticket sales for T20 games have seen constant growth since 2012, right across the country, and I think we are now reaching a tipping point in terms of attendances for a lot of clubs.

“When you look at the numbers, can we do any better?

“Well, here at the Kia Oval, work to build an additional 2,000 seats – taking our capacity to 27,000 – starts on October 1 so that’s one good way of trying to accommodate more people!”

Gould said a key statistic from Surrey’s bumper Blast season was that 50 per cent of all ticket sales have been to new people – in other words, people not previously on the county’s database.

“This summer there is no doubt that England’s World Cup win, and then the excitement surrounding the Ashes Test series has provided cricket with a lot more profile, but it’s also true that we were on track for record T20 ticket sales – in terms of our advance sales – even before the World Cup finished,” he said.

“People really want to come to cricket matches at the moment.”

Gould is also keen to point out the “outstanding” experience that Vitality Blast spectators receive not just at Test match venues such as the Kia Oval, Lord’s, Emirates Old Trafford, but also at smaller venues such as Hove and Taunton.

“It is very clear from the numbers across both the South and North Groups that more and more people are enjoying their experience of attending Vitality Blast games and watching their local counties,” he added.

“What was particularly striking this season, for us, was that we had three Tuesday evening games, for which in the past we have struggled to sell

just reward for another fine opening spell by Samir Hussain. Jon Lodwick was more profligate, but took the second wicket with the last ball of his fifth over to reduce Park to 20-2. Joe Spicuglia and Rob Hill took the score to 46 in the 13th over without undue alarm before Spicuglia was lbw to Simon Harwood for 13.

Harwood struck again four overs later to take two wickets with successive balls and reduce them to 52-5 after 17. By now Alex Gledhill had replaced Hussain. He took the sixth wicket with the score on 59, and Harwood took his fourth to make it 70-7 after 23 overs.

Harwood came off after bowling

eight overs and taking 4-21, nine of which had come from a wayward first over before he settled. He was replaced by 14 year old leg spinner Ahmed Khan, who required just three balls to remove Hill, who had remained in control while the wickets tumbled at the other end. His 28, off 72 balls, was comfortably the highest score of the innings.

Khan’s next over was too much for the last two batsmen as he bowled them both to dismiss Park for 84 off 28.3 overs, the last eight wickets having fallen for just 38 runs. Khan finished with 3-9 off 1.3 overs, while Hussain and Gledhill both had miserly figures

of 1-9 off six and 1-14 off eight respectively. Lodwick finished with 1-25 off five (though not all of those runs had come off the middle of the bat!), while keeper Will Bancroft held four catches.

Khan then opened the batting with Chris Purshouse, and they added 18 together before the youngster was bowled by the first ball of the sixth over for 7. Purshouse was joined by Matt Marfani and the pair added 37 for the second wicket, comfortably the highest partnership of the match, before Purshouse fell to a diving catch off a skier for 22, off 38 balls.

DULWICH RECORDED a comprehensive victory by seven wickets over Worcester Park to retain third place in Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship.

Worcester Park chose to bat but lost their first wicket in the fourth over as

the score on 67, but Nick Gunning joined Marfani to see their side home.

Marfani survived a blow to the helmet to finish unbeaten with 36, his highest score of the season, off 56 balls. The victory had come after just 21 overs.

Stoke D’Abernon also won to remain second, so Dulwich stay in third place.

In their final game this weekend Dulwich travel to Bank of England, who were top of the table before Dulwich beat them in their first encounter but who have subsequently fallen away and are now fifth. To achieve promotion Dulwich will have to win, and hope that Stoke fail to win their last match, away to Farnham.

The rise of the women’s game has been obvious over the last few years, last year in particular, with more female presenters such as Laura Woods and Alex Scott getting prominent roles on Sky Sports, and Reid thinks that this is only the beginning of the rise of the game. “There are particular programmes that are based around women’s football and I think it just needs more exposure.

Because of the good work that you have seen at the World Cup and how well we have done, girls are now wanting to play football, parents are going to go and watch and the quality of football is improving. I think it’s about the quality.”

Millwall have announced that admission to watch the Lionesses at St Pauls’ in Rotherhithe this season will be free, and Reid is urging fans to go along and support the team and see what it is they are going to offer. “I would say to everyone, ‘come and have a look at us’.

We welcome people and the fact is at St Paul’s we aren’t charging, so come in and have a look at us, and then judge us. I’m quite happy if they see what they see, and people are surprised and say, ‘you played a game like it looks on the telly’. I’m really looking forward to it, I think it’s really important that it gets the exposure it needs.”

After Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Dorking Wanderers, Gavin Rose’s side lost to Ibby Akanbi’s goal five minutes from time in front of 1,565 fans in east Dulwich.

The Hamlet didn’t have a shot on target in a scrappy game.

Kieran Monlouis had a half-chance after breaking forward and exchanging passes with Barnes, but United got enough players back to snuff out the danger.

With five minutes left, substitute Akanbi cut in from the left to fire past Maynard-Brewer.

Mills had a late chance from Jeffrey Monakana’s cross, but the striker couldn’t hit the target.

The result saw Maidstone go above their hosts in the table. Hamlet are eighth with fourteen points from nine games.

FISHER FELL to a fourth consecutive defeat as they lost 41 to Canterbury City in the SCEFL Premier Division last Saturday.

Allan Fenn’s side took the lead through Billy Brown, but were 2-1 down at half-time after goals from Liam King and Dean Grant.

A Charlie Dickens brace in the second half confirmed the points for the hosts.

The defeat followed a 3-1 home loss against AFC Croydon Athletic the previous weekend. After that game, Fenn posted an angry

Following the summer breakaway of London City Lionesses, the new Millwall team will be in the sixth tier with a group of new players and a new manager as the club begin their journey back up the football pyramid.

New Lionesses boss Colin Reid is embracing the challenge of getting Millwall back up the leagues. “I’m massively looking forward to it, there’s a big history with Millwall. The players are also looking forward to it. I’m honoured and privileged to be considered as that manager [that can take them up].

I take the position seriously and think what a great opportunity in women’s football and can’t wait for the season to start.”

While Reid is keen to get up the leagues as quickly as possible, he admitted that the Lionesses will have to “earn the right” to make their way back. “First thing I will say is that we are grateful for being accepted at the level we’re at, we have to deal with that, as I’ve said to the players and any players that come in, we are where we are.

“We’re grateful for that opportunity and we want to push back to where we rightfully think we want to be or should be, but you have no rights in football. We have to earn the right to get back to where we want to be.

“I think there will be a lot of people looking at what we do and I’m saying to the players they should embrace that because it’s a challenge for them, it’s a challenge for everyone.”

Reid is also the Technical Director of Millwall’s Regional Talent Club (RTC) and has decided to continue in that post alongside managing the team. The RTC is something he thinks could benefit Millwall in the future, making them “unique”.

“I think what’s nice for me and for

Millwall is, I’m the Technical Director of the RTC. We always talk about pathways in football. I think it’s really important to recognise what we offer at Millwall. We are probably very unique. There’s going to be a genuine pathway and we’ve got two or three girls at the moment who have come through the RTC and are playing in the first team.

“They probably wouldn’t get that chance at another club, so for us it’s a selling point, a very positive thing that can attract people to the RTC. For me it’s about progression. The girls can see a pathway that they maybe wouldn’t get at other clubs. We’re going to use that as a unique selling point, ‘come and apply to Millwall’s RTC’.

“The way we play is the same, so the continuity is there and having that means there’s no difference in coming through in the RTC to the first team. It’s a golden opportunity for anyone to be seen, to get some publicity and get us to where we want to be.

“People will be looking at us and I’m saying to the girls, ‘that’s your opportunity if you want to kick on, you can use Millwall to get us to where we want to be’. Hopefully then they’ll want to stay because we’ll be at the next level and be able attract players. It’s a good opportunity for everyone at our club – the RTC and the first team.”

Playing out from the back has become popular not just in the men’s game but in the women’s game too, with both national teams adopting that style of play at their most recent World Cups.

It’s also the style that Reid wants his team to play. “Obviously, we’ll have our own identity. What the fans will get – and we welcome the fans to come and see us and see what we’re offering – we’re going to have possession, we’re going to be aggressive, we’re going to win the ball back early and we’re also going to know how to defend a bit deeper if we need to.

“In terms of how we play, I’ve said to the girls, I take responsibility for that, we’re going to play from the back. We don’t have that physicality, or the players to hit 70-, 80-yard balls. We have got some players who can hit 50-, 60-yard balls and we’ll educate them to play the

At the final whistle on Saturday there were some boos, after a ponderous piece of play that summed up the second half.

Ryan Leonard, when maybe he could have turned, limped a ball with no real conviction back to Ben Thompson in the 95th minute.

Thompson showed more urgency to get the ball wide but just as an opportunity to cross presented itself referee Oliver Langford blew the full-time whistle.

Matt Smith stood in the box, hands on hips, looking the picture of frustration.

Neil Harris revealed afterwards Smith had been unhappy with the service he had received. Harris didn’t spend money on a 6ft 6ins hulk of a striker to have him standing in the box checking the timetable and looking up and seeing nothing on the horizon.

Harris picked out Connor Mahoney for criticism. He set up the Lions’ two winners in their opening two games at The Den this season. But he was quiet on Saturday and has gone into his shell a

little bit recently.

Harris doesn’t randomly criticise players, there’s a reason behind it. He wants a reaction from Mahoney. When Millwall returned to training this Wednesday Harris would have wanted to see an I’ll-show-you attitude from his winger. He’s testing his mettle.

But that perspective. Yes fans were entitled to show their frustration on the final whistle, especially as Hull only had nine players on the pitch. But overall it’s been a very positive start.

One defeat in six league games and nine points. This time last season the Lions went into the international break after three consecutive defeats and there were problems in the dressing, something that Harris would not shed light on until the second-last game of the campaign against Bristol City when safety had been secured.

The players talk about a much tighter group, much more tempo and intensity in training. Mahoney will be a quality addition, he’s shown that already, and will improve once he has more time to get used to and practise what Harris wants from his wingers.

He should look back on Jed Wallace’s performance for an indication. Wallace tried and tried and tried to engineer

something for his side. Not everything worked, but that didn’t stop him. He almost scored his second early in the second half when he cut inside from the left but his cross-shot deflected wide.

He had given Millwall the lead from the penalty spot in the tenth minute. It was Wallace who had shifted the ball through to Smith after the Lions had pressed high up the pitch. Smith was fouled by Jordy De Wijs and Wallace slammed the penalty down the middle past George Long. Harris hailed Wallace’s “bravery” for stepping up after his return from a three-match ban.

At that point you thought it would be nice to finally see Millwall put someone properly to the sword at home, to hand out a beating that the home fans could savour rather than being put through the wringer.

But then the wind was completely knocked out of their sails by the equaliser. There should have been little danger when Kamil Groosicki stood over a free-kick 40 yards out on the left touchline. Grosicki was crossing, but the ball drifted over Bartosz Bialkowski, who had been flawless in keeping two clean sheets in the previous two games here this season.

Millwall were the better side in the

second half but Harris was unhappy they didn’t get more balls into the box to Smith, Tom Bradshaw and later the latter’s replacement Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

Shane Ferguson, Harris’ most reliable substitute who turned the third round of the FA Cup against the same side on its head last January with two goals off the bench, came on with instructions to aim for the big men as early as possible.

From one Ferguson cross Bodvarsson nodded back across goal to Leonard, under pressure, who headed wide from six yards. It was from around the same area that Kevin Stewart had somehow dragged a shot wide of an open goal in the first half for one of the worst misses of the season.

There was one more Millwall halfchance when Jake Cooper headed down Ferguson’s corner but the ball deflected just wide.

After third substitute Jon Toral had gone off injured with ten minutes left, former Charlton striker Josh Magennis was sent off in injury-time for a second booking.

But it wasn’t exactly Hull’s last stand, rather a tame effort from the home side until Langford’s whistle.

Lots of positives, but lots to work on over the international break.

Competitive training ground contests bring out the best in players

RYAN LEONARD says Millwall’s training sessions this season are “no holds barred” – but insists the players are “mates” who all want the best for each other.

The Lions play first-team against secondteam games at Calmont Road, with boss Neil Harris urging more intensity and competitiveness on the training ground this season.

The results have been evident on matchdays. Millwall are unbeaten at home where they haven’t conceded a goal from play in three games.

They also got draws at West Brom and Middlesbrough, their only defeat coming at Fulham.

“This year we want to put things right that we didn’t do last year. Before the Fulham game we would have taken seven points from three games, every Millwall fan and everyone involved at the club would have.

“We had a bit of a reality check against Fulham but to bounce back the way we did was a good sign. We can go into the

international break and have a bit of a rest.

It’s been a really tough month but it’s good that we’ve got a competitive squad this year, the gaffer has put together a group that are chomping at the bit before every game.

“He’s been able to change the team up as well and more and more it feels like a positive start to the season.

“All over the pitch now we’ve got really good strength in depth, in training we do eleven v eleven and you look at the team not playing and you think most of them could be in the starting side.

“Not just forwards, but we’ve got good depth in defence and midfield. Aiden [O’Brien] can play up top, Jon Dadi [Bodvarsson] hasn’t yet got the game time he would have wanted, and he’s raring to go as well.

“The recruitment that the club has done this summer has been brilliant and in the long run over the course of the season, playing maybe 50 games in all competitions, it’s going to be massive for us to have a good squad.

“We’ve got a really good tight-knit group and it shows around the training ground and on the pitch. That will be a massive help for us.”

Leonard has more competition in midfield this season, with Jayson

Molumby set to push for a starting spot after the international break.

“Jays is a good player, he’s technically a very good footballer,” Leonard said.

“He’s at Brighton for a reason, they obviously like him. It’s good for us, we’ve got four midfielders now that can change and play in any game. Going into training sessions it’s competitive, there’s no holds barred, everyone wants to play.

“We’ve got a good connection among the lads. Everyone wants everyone to do well, which is nice, and then people on the pitch want to do their best. It’s all positive signs and if we can carry that on then great.”

Millwall lost just that one league game in August, 4-0 away at Fulham when the hosts posted record possession and passing stats for a Championship side since Opta started recording such numbers in 201314.

The Lions bounced back in the next game when they drew 1-1 at Middlesbrough.

Leonard believes that response showed their character after their Craven Cottage mauling.

“I think [Fulham] were one of the best teams I’ve ever played against,” Leonard said. “I’ve played against a few top-flight teams in the cup and in friendlies but, for

me, that performance was one of the most difficult I’ve faced in my career.

“Getting beat 4-0 was very disappointing, we were all a bit gutted, but we’re not going to come across a performance like that every week. We’re a good side, we know that, we can pass the ball, we can play direct when we need to. We need to concentrate on ourselves and we put that defeat to bed after the game.

“There were a few words spoken and we weren’t happy with how we played.

Everything Fulham did seemed to work out perfectly and that shows that every team you play at this level that can happen.

“We all said on the Thursday morning when we got together we were happy we had a game so close. If we’d had to wait a week it would probably have lingered too long.

“It wasn’t just the result going away to Boro, the performance put a lot of things right that we didn’t do at Fulham. That was the most pleasing thing rather than the result.

“The gaffer said we needed a reaction and I think the performance showed that we did get one.”

The game at The Riverside saw Millwall’s record signing Leonard do

battle with their record sale, George Saville.

Leonard said: “We were pretty much up against each other, there were a few headers and a few 50-50s. I’ve played against Sav a few times and we can kind of have a bit of a laugh and chat during the game.”

Millwall returned to training this Wednesday minus their players away on international duty.

But there will be no lack of competition on the training ground among those preparing to play Blackburn, especially in those intra-club matches.

Leonard continued: “You obviously can’t play it like a [league] game which is much more intense. But for me training games are as hard as those games in terms of physically, running hard, competing, you still go in for everything: headers, tackles. But you have to be a little bit careful because you’re playing against your mates, it’s not a league game or a cup game.

“It’s still very competitive and that’s what the gaffer wants this year, he wants everything to be more competitive, he wants training to be more intense. You should train as you play and we need to then take that into matches. If we do that then I know we’ll do well this season.”

IN THE first of a two-part feature interview, we take a look at Millwall’s transfer activities and processes with the club’s head of recruitment.

lex Aldridge joined Millwall as a recruitment officer in the summer of 2015 before taking on the role of the head of the department after the departure of Andrew Mills towards end of the 2015-16 season.

Along with boss Neil Harris and chief executive Steve Kavanagh, in the most recent transfer window Aldridge oversaw the biggest squad rebuild since Harris took over as manager in April 2015.

Millwall signed nine first-team players on permanent or loan deals, while ten of last season’s squad departed.

Harris said last April that he would be re-shaping his squad, feeling it was the end of a four-year cycle. He also made reference, after the last home game of last season against Bristol City, to a lack of professionalism among some players, and the club followed through in the summer by recruiting their main targets.

Aldridge heads a department that includes chief scout, Terry Bullivant, two analysts based at the training ground, Nicholas Tyler-Hicks and Josh Kennard, as well as scouts based in Britain and Ireland.

Aldridge gave an insight into what goes on behind the scenes when he spoke to Southwark News this week. *****

Southwark News: When was the decision made that there would be a large turnover of players after the end of last season?

Alex Aldridge: It probably wasn’t a conscious decision or conversation internally because I think it was to a lot of us quite obvious that the cycle of the squad Neil had spoken about was coming to an end. That once we got over the line [securing Championship status] there was going to be the need to change things around.

In January we wanted to do a little bit more than we were able to. Once we got over the line Neil was quite clear that that cycle had reached an end and he needed to freshen it up.

We sat down with the board and the chairman the week after the season finished and went through a lot of

scenarios that could pan out over the summer with positions that we were looking at.

There were players coming out of contract, we were making decisions on players that we could let go and move on, and the knock-on effect that would have on our incoming business.

No one from the chairman down to the recruitment department was unaware that there was going to be change in the summer.

Because Neil was honest with the supporters after the Bristol City game in his interview, when you say things publicly as a club then you have to do them because otherwise people will judge you against the expectations that you set.

That spelt it out to everyone – supporters, people inside the club, the board – that we needed to freshen it up.

Not start again, but rebuild it a little bit.

SN: Neil Harris said it was a tougher window than he had expected – what were some of the reasons for that?

AA: There was a big drop-off in the amount of money that was spent in the Championship this summer compared to 2018.

There was a little bit of a late surge from a few clubs that probably brought the numbers up but we were well over three-quarters of the way through the window this year and the spending was a third [compared to last year].

That meant that there wasn’t much liquidity in the market in terms of players and money moving around. It’s one big spider’s web, it’s all linked in together and if the big boys – whether in the Premier League or the Championship, for us probably more the Championship – are not spending and bringing players in then they’re not letting players go.

If there’s not much movement then clubs in League One, for example, which is a big market for us, aren’t in any rush to sell players because they’re not getting any offers. They feel like the market is still to get going.

We had that with a few players when, as soon as the season finished, or as soon as clubs finished their play-off campaigns, we were straight in with making bids but actually most of the market had barely got out of bed.

We found that clubs just weren’t in a mindset yet of wanting to do business or feeling a need to do business. They were waiting for the merry-go-round to get going, which it never really did. There

was a little bit of a surge at the end but a lot of clubs, including ourselves, apart from bringing in Luke Steele on the back of Frank Fielding’s injury, had done their business by the time there was the late merry-go-round of things happening.

I remember the changeover between May and June we made a bid for one player and I think it took us eleven days to get a response. From a negotiation point of view, as frustrating as it is to not get a response, you can’t chase your own bid. You have to wait to get a response or you end up bidding against yourself.

It was quite slow at the start and maybe there was the perception that because nothing was happening nothing was being done, but that certainly wasn’t the

case. In fact, we were very active on lots of fronts compared to most clubs. We were one of the most active in the Championship.

Behind the scenes, making bids and trying to get things moving, we were very active as soon as the season was finished. It just took a while for things to get going and fall into place.

SN: Given the scale of the rebuild, did you feel pressure or were you confident the club would complete the deals they were chasing?

AA: There’s a little bit of both.

Confident in the sense that we were well-prepared and organised and we know what we’re doing in how we go

after players. We know Neil’s expectations for style of player and we’re confident in how we recruit and how we identify players. Our track record and judgement has generally been pretty good, so we were confident in that sense that we would make the right decisions.

But obviously because of the sheer volume of change, in every single transfer there are so many variables and so much potential for it to go wrong, sometimes through no one’s fault in particular.

Sometimes the hardest part is not in identifying new players, the players that will suit us, the difficult bit is getting them and executing it.

INSIDE MILLWALL’S TRANSFER STRATEGY

The lowdown on identifying targets, why transfers can take so long to complete, this summer’s rebuild, and how many players Millwall are monitoring at any given time

That’s probably where myself, Neil and Steve as a trio felt pressure to actually put into action what had been discussed and agreed upon in theory, in terms of players we were going to go after and the areas we wanted to strengthen.

Putting the plan together is often the easy bit but then you have to do it.

Particularly at the start of the summer when we were facing such a slow market, it was frustrating, but equally we weren’t panicking. The week before preseason started [for Millwall on June 26] the market got its act together and people started moving. Then the deals that we had progressed to a good point, without getting them done, suddenly started to move and fall into place.

That’s when with every one you do the pressure drops off a little bit. But until you complete the last one you still haven’t finished what you set out to do.

I think everyone knew it was a really important time to get right and the proof will be in the pudding long-term whether we’ve done that. In terms of getting the players that we set out to get, I think we’re relatively happy with what we were able to do.

SN: Millwall signed nine first-team players in the summer – but how many potential targets, or second- or third-choice targets, had the club identified?

AA: When we sat down with the board

after the season had finished we went through a dossier and there were probably around 30 players on the list in terms of ones that were an A, a B or C. Obviously categorising players A, B and C is a bit fluid as well.

But that’s 30 players whittled down from 100 and 100 whittled down from...I wouldn’t necessarily put a finite number on it.

What was pleasing from one perspective was the players that we got were always in the forefront of the early discussions. Either because someone has blown you out of the water financially or a player has decided he doesn’t want to come to Millwall, sometimes you do have to move on to the next one and the

But actually we stuck with the ones we really wanted and some took longer to get than we ideally wanted them to.

Someone like Jason McCarthy is a good example. That deal in particular took a long time because of the element involving Fred Onyedinma. It was quite complicated. It probably took two weeks longer than we wanted but in the end we stuck at it and we got what we wanted.

Thankfully we didn’t have to come away massively from the list that we started with in May, beginning of June.

SN: Can you give a little bit more detail on why those particular deals took longer than expected to complete?

AA: Fred going to Wycombe and Jason coming to us were two separate transactions, but obviously they were being negotiated at the same time. You will see swap deals spoken about in the press, not necessarily with Millwall but just in general, they get discussed all the time – Neymar [during the summer] with Barca players going to PSG – and it all sounds very exciting.

It very, very rarely happens. I think in the past it was much more common whereas now I think to get clubs to match up on valuations of players is very difficult. When you’ve got a buying club and a selling club it’s difficult enough to get them to agree on a valuation of one player, so when you then get two players, to get them to agree on valuations is always more difficult.

You’ve then got potential wage disparities and it just gets very complicated. The circumstances where it all matches and every party in that, the two clubs and the two players, find a solution that works for everyone is just very rare.

They get talked about all the time, swap deals, but very rarely happen. That’s just one example.

SN: How do you identify players that fit into the way Millwall play under Harris?

AA: We have a team of scouts at firstteam level, approximately ten scouts including someone in Scotland, in Ireland and then the other guys are dotted around the country. That’s including Terry Bullivant, who is our chief scout. Our scouts are out constantly watching players.

In terms of identifying a player, where can that start? Well it can start from the data that we have. We have two fulltime analysts in the recruitment department. We get data from Opta and we get data from Wyscout, and other sources as well. [The analysts] are constantly working with their algorithms that are designed to flag up players that suit what we want from a player in that position.

Connor Mahoney is a good example of this to illustrate the point. On a very basic level, the requirements of a Millwall winger: Crossing the ball is obviously very important; carrying the ball up the pitch is very important; and then also having a level of defensive responsibility to track back and win the ball back.

Someone like Connor Mahoney would have and did show up very well in all those areas. That’s not to say we signed him based on that alone, that’s just an identity tool to then feed into the scouting process. That would have happened relatively early last season

when Connor was getting into the team at Birmingham. We watched Connor in the under-23s when he was at Blackburn, so we’ve got historical information on him going back three or four years.

But in terms of his impact in the Championship last year, he was second [in the] Millwall-winger algorithm, if you like. So his games then get prioritised in terms of the games that we cover, that the scouts get sent to. By the turn of the year, January, February time, we’ve got a really good pool of reports to see whether what the data says about Connor matches up with the opinions of our scouts.

Generally the players that we recommend to Neil and the players that we go after are the ones that match up between what our scouts see and what we can infer from the data.

Obviously you’ve then got to be able to afford the player and the player has got to want to come to you. That process is going on constantly with hundreds of players. Then you start to filter them out. You take out the ones you can’t afford, you take out the ones that aren’t quite good enough or there’s a big difference between what the scouts say and what the data says.

The third-party data sources are quite good, and most Championship clubs now have the same level of data, the same quality of data, so it’s very rare you would get a massive disparity between what the scouts see and what the data shows. But we would never do one without the other, they would always go hand in hand.

Within that process we would also make sure that Neil had the opportunity to see those players, certainly on video but almost always at a live game as well. So by the time we get to Easter, towards the end of the season, we’ve done all the work we need to do.

SN: Is one method seen as more important than the other in identifying players?

AA: As long as a player goes through both parts of the process, the live scouting and the data scouting, it doesn’t really matter in what order.

The data scouting is probably a more efficient way of identifying players at a basic level. There were probably 500 or 600 active players in the Championship last season and we can go through them quite quickly and pick out some interesting markers. Obviously scouts are watching games but there are only 22 players on the pitch, you have to see them at the right time having a good game to flag them up, for example.

You get players that catch the eye, the scout flags them up and we check them out on the data. If they didn’t have anything outstanding on the data it doesn’t mean that we then just discard them.

Obviously our market, up to this point, has almost exclusively been the UK so there are only a finite number of players. The reality is that we have a lot of information on a lot of the players in the lower leagues, anyone that would be good enough to play in the Championship. Whether they would suit our style of play or not we’ve got resources and the time to cover them all in detail so that we're not missing anything.

It happens all the time that a scout identifies a player and they feed into the process at that point.

Millwall already planning transfer activity a year ahead EXCLUSIVE

MILLWALL HAVE already turned their attentions to next summer’s transfer window – but will have plans in place should Neil Harris decide he wants to boost his squad in January

Harris has a first-team squad of 22 players, one of the smallest in the Championship. Billy Mitchell and George Alexander have also both made senior appearances but won’t be rushed into league action.

Millwall had to react to an injury to Frank Fielding on the opening day by

quickly adding to the squad with the loan signing of goalkeeper Luke Steele before the transfer window closed for Championship clubs on August 8.

There is no rest for Millwall’s recruitment department despite the closure of the window, and they are identifying targets long-term.

Clubs can also still sign free agents.

Last year Millwall brought in Jem Karacan, who was without a club, after Ben Thompson moved on loan to Portsmouth.

Last January Harris signed Alex Pearce and Ben Marshall on loan.

“We’ll be looking for next summer as much as January,” Millwall’s head of recruitment, Alex Aldridge, said. “What could develop in January would be reacting to the short-term needs of the

manager. It could be injuries, it could be loss of form, it could be that once we get into the autumn Neil feels we’re lacking something.

“The requirements for January will probably evolve over the next weeks and months. For next summer, because of contract positions with certain players or we’ve got players here on loan who aren’t contracted beyond next season, there’s a bit more of a clearer cut-off point. We can see where the gaps are more clearly.

“We’ll be looking straight away towards next summer and when things become clearer mid-season then we start working towards January as well.

“So far we haven’t had to really react in [the free agent] market and ideally we won’t have to. But we’ve done it in

“It’s a slightly different example last year with Thommo going to Portsmouth and getting someone like Jem in on a short-term contract. There’s probably nothing in the planning this time around, again it would probably only be a reaction to severe injury problems.

“There are always players floating around and we still get called quite regularly by agents, by players making us aware they are without a club and either training somewhere or asking if they can train with us.

“We’re not actively looking at free agents at the minute. But we’re always mindful of who might be out there in case we need to react to something that happens and we need to bring someone in on a short-term basis.”

Striker stays after window closure

TOM ELLIOTT will stay and battle for his place at least until January after the transfer window closed for leagues below the Championship this week.

Elliott, who is in the last year of his contract, was made available for transfer this summer and was close to joining Ipswich on loan last month before that deal fell through.

Lee Gregory and Steve Morison left in the summer, but Millwall signed Matt Smith and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to further limit Elliott’s chances of playing. Tom Bradshaw returned from a long-term injury and Aiden O’Brien is seen as more of an option up front this season than on the wing.

That leaves Elliott with a real battle to see any action. He did start in the second round of the EFL Cup against Oxford United and set up a goal for Bodvarsson.

Elliott, who will be 29 in November, has started just 24 league games for Millwall in just over two seasons.

Millwall boss Neil Harris told the News recently: “He’s a big part of the squad and popular with the group. He’s liked by the staff and the players and will crack on. He’ll battle hard to get himself in the team or on the bench.”
