AYOUNG Bermondsey father suffering from cancer is trying to raise money for his daughter and complete his bucket list, after being given just months to live.

Jack Wells, 23, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone disease, in March 2015, after he noticed a lump on his shoulder.

Now his illness has progressed to its final stages, despite receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy from University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre.

ODAY YOU can vote on the future direction of the city you live in - so please make sure you get out there and cast your vote!

We always appeal to our readers to make the effort to take part in the democratic process, as everyone is affected by politics - and with the London Mayoral and GLA elections, your vote is arguably even more effective.

With the first-past-the-post system in general elections, your vote, while still important, is only for a Parliamentary constituency, and if enough of those are totted up by one party, they become the government. So your actual voting impact is fairly oblique - not to mention that you’re voting for a party, rather than a person.

With today’s elections, you can put your cross next to the mayoral candidate whom you think will best lead the capital forward for the next four years, along with your second favourite. Simply put, if enough people vote for a candidate, they become the next Mayor - so your vote, and every vote, counts.

You’ll also be voting for your GLA member, as well as for the party that controls the GLA, and again it’s important that you vote for this representative. The Mayor of London is given huge powers by the electorate so it makes sense that as they’re voted in, you’re also deciding who will scrutinise their decisions and hold them to account. They can also petition the Mayor on behalf of your GLA constituency - in our case Southwark & Lambeth.

So it’s clear that your vote counts and the only reason remaining as to why you wouldn’t take part in today’s elections is because you simply can’t be bothered.

Of course, if you’re unaffected by the city’s housing crisis, if traffic congestion and pollution doesn’t impact on your daily life, if crime in your area doesn’t concern you, or the make-up of your local high street not interest you along with one hundred other issues then you’re probably right not to cast your vote.

Chances are though, that there isn’t a Londoner among us who won’t be affected one way or the other by the new Mayor we vote in today.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

Both directors live in the borough. A dedicated team of staff work tirelessly to cover as much of what is going on as possible and strive to ensure that a community-led, independent newspaper can survive and excel in a market dominated by national and multinational media groups.

Millwall fans to travel from Den to Gillingham by foot to raise cash for charity

TWO LIFE-long Millwall fans will walk 30 miles from The Den to see the Lions take on Gillingham away, all to raise money for charity.

Kevin Kempster, 61, predicts the marathon march on Sunday morning will take him and his pal Philip O’Regan ten hours to complete.

“I’m going to be raising money for Prostate Cancer UK,” said Kevin, who comes from Bermondsey and now lives in Welling.

“My dad is 84, and he’s dealt with prostate cancer for eight years, but he has been given the all-clear. Dad and I are Millwall through and through, but he can’t make it to the games anymore.

“Basically I was getting some high blood pressure, so I wanted to do a bit of walking to improve my health.

“Phil and I are both season ticket holders, and we had the idea to do something constructive, and thought we might as well do it for charity.

“It’s going to be a challenge for an old git, but there’s no way we won’t be able to do it.”

Meanwhile Philip, aged 42, is raising money for local cancer charity, The MumMum Foundation.

A YOUNG Bermondsey father suffering from cancer is trying to raise money for his daughter and complete his bucket list after being given just months to live.

Jack Wells, 23, was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone disease, in March 2015 after he noticed a lump on his shoulder.

Now his illness has progressed to its final stages after receiving chemotherapy and radiotherapy from University College Hospital Macmillan Cancer Centre.

Jack said: “The chemotherapy has stopped as there’s not much point in carrying on with it. I now just get on with life every day as there’s not much else you can do.

“It would be great to go to Florida for a memorable trip with my daughter and tick off a few things on my bucket list but the insurance costs are quite high.”

The News previously reported that Jack was trying to raise money for a trip to Florida in the USA with his three-year-old daughter, Scarlett.

But as the cost of insuring the trip rose, efforts are now being turned to

creating a fund for Scarlett for when she’s older and to fulfil some life-long dreams.

Things to do on Jack’s bucket list include seeing the northern lights, swimming with dolphins, seeing tiger cubs and driving a sports car.

His wish of riding a hot air balloon will come true on May 31 in Maidstone, Kent after his uncle helped organise it.

Veronica Carter, Jack’s mum, said: “Jack is coping but he is in pain. He’s now receiving painkillers from Guy’s Hospital and we’ve decided he won’t go to a hospice.

“Now is the time for making memories. We want to take him away even for a week as a family holiday and to spend some quality time with him. We would go wherever he wants.

“Jack is admired for his bravery and always manages to bring laughter and smiles wherever he goes. The staff at the hospital are very fond of him.”

The primary tumour was in Jack’s right shoulder blade but has since spread to other bones such as his spine and pelvis and also his lungs.

Bermondsey Best beer makes a guest appearence in Parliament

SOUTHWARK BREWERY were in Parliament’s Stranger’s Bar on Tuesday night pulling a pint of their very own Bermondsey Best with Labour MP Neil Coyle.

The Member of Parliament for Bermondsey and Old Southwark was

joined by the brewers to mark the start of their beer being on the pumps in Westminster.

MP Neil said: “I’m super-pleased that Bermondsey Best is the guest beer in the Strangers Bar in the House of Commons.

“I asked for Southwark Brewing to have this fine brew in the Commons last year and it’s great to showcase this fantastic product in such a unique place.”

MP: WHERE DID A&E £6.5M GRANT GO? EXCLUSIVE

AN MP has called on King’s College Hospital bosses to disclose what happened to £6.5m they received in 2008, after Maudsley Hospital’s mental-health A&E closed down.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP, Helen Hays (pictured), has lent her voice to the Southwark Pensioners’ Action Group (SPAG), who are driven to see the mental health ward at Maudsley reinstated.

SPAG member Tom White says his many meetings with doctors and health professionals at King’s have consistently indicated the hospital struggles to cope with its volume of mental-health patients.

“SPAG is lobbying for the A&E to reopen as soon as possible,” Tom said.

“The A&E at King’s College Hospital is not the right place for mental health sufferers to be treated when they are in crisis. The Care Quality Commission clearly states that mental-health sufferers must be treated in the right environment.

A busy A&E such as King’s doesn’t fit this category.”

Ms Hays has now turned her attention to a question also raised by SPAG, of what became of a £6.5m grant King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust was awarded to help it facilitate the influx of mental-health patients since Maudsley A&E was closed. “[The funding] was given on the premise of new facilities being opened at King’s A&E for those suffering a mental health crisis and needing a place of safety,” Ms Hays said.

“What became of that money? Was it actually allocated? What was it spent on

and why?

“There is also the absolute need for added emergency mental-health relief.

King’s is one of the biggest mentalhealth units in the country, and in Lambeth we have the highest instances of people who suffer a mental-health crisis.

“I have written to the minister responsible for mental health and I have met doctors at King’s A&E and with the CEO of the South London and Maudsley Trust. I want to get to the bottom of why the emergency room wasn’t opened and I want to lobby the government to get it opened.”

A spokesperson for King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust said: “We are sorry that the redevelopment of our Emergency Department (ED) has taken longer than expected.

“The bulk of the funding allocated to the project has been spent on completing the external building works, as well as reconfiguring the inside of the ED to better cater for the patients we treat. This includes for mental-health patients.

“We will complete the improvement works, but it may take time. One of the key reasons for the delay is the fact that we have to keep the ED running 24 hours a day, all year round. We now see over 450 patients a day, which makes completing even minor improvement works to the department a major logistical and practical challenge.

“We continue to have protocols in place to support mental-health patients who attend the ED. For example, we have a dedicated SLaM psychiatricliaison team in the department 24/7, as well as a dedicated assessment room for mental-health patients. We are confident the improvement works, once finished, will improve even further the care we provide to this specific group of patients, as well as others presenting to the ED.”

Woman led to safety after flat fire

A PECKHAM woman was led to safety after a fire started in her flat on Monday.

More than 21 firefighters were called to the flat fire in Bournemouth Road, off Rye Lane, at 12.40pm.

The woman was said to be suffering from smoke inhalation, and was taken to

a south London hospital by London Ambulance Service.

The fire was under control by 1.55pm, and was attended by London Fire Brigade crews from Peckham, New Cross, Brixton and Dockhead.

The fire is under investigation by fire officers and the police.

A CAR company near the Old Kent Road staged an anti-TfL demonstration on Tuesday in protest of proposed double red lines being put down outside their business.

Kent Carriage Company displayed banners and was joined by over 35 people holding placards and chanting as they blocked Pomeroy Street for fifteen minutes with three of their cars.

The company’s owners believe that if TfL puts down the double red lines it will drive business away.

The short protest attracted much attention as a long line of cars up the Old Kent Road quickly formed with the sounds of horns filling the air.

TfL have said that they are yet to begin the consultation period for the proposed double red lines and that

they are for the smooth running of the junction. Nigel Hardy, Head of Sponsorship and Surface Transport at TfL, said: "No decision has been made on proposed changes at this junction. We've been engaging with Kent Carriage Company for some time and we will hold a consultation into proposed safety improvements later this year."

A MOTORCYCLIST was killed in a collision with a pick-up truck in Peckham on Saturday afternoon.

The 51-year-old man’s collision with the Volkswagen Amarok truck happened in Consort Road at 5.33pm.

Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene of the crash at 6.52pm.

Borough girl born with lung disease to run 5km for Great Ormond Street

A BOROUGH girl who received life-saving care for her lung condition at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) will take part in a 5k race on May 15 to raise money for them.

Amecia Hytlon, ten, was born at 25 weeks and weighed just 1lb 7oz, with a chronic lung disease leaving her in need of frequent hospital visits.

After a year her condition worsened to needing ten days on an ECMO machine to replicate her lung function.

GOSH’s care helped her to recover and now Amecia wants to say thank you by raising money in the Royal Bank of Canada’s Race for the Kids 5k at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park with her family. Amecia’s mum, Caroline, said: “It was so frightening to see her in this way but the doctors and nurses were so lovely they really helped us during a very difficult time.

“They took the time out just to prepare us, they were amazing, you just had every confidence that Amecia was in the right place and they would do what they could for her.”

A record 10,000 people are expected to take part this year with the money raised helping to fund new world-class facilities at GOSH. Alison Rulton, Senior Fundraising Manager at Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity, said: “We’re thrilled that Amecia and her family are taking part this year. “All the money raised will help us make a real difference to seriously ill children and their families from across the UK, so we’d like to say a big thank you to the family for their support.

“The RBC Race for the Kids is a fantastic family fun run, with people of all ages and abilities getting involved. It’s a great day out, with activities and entertainment for all the family.”

Long-serving councillor to step down, triggering Rotherhithe by-election ROTHERHITHE

A LONG-serving Liberal Democrat councillor has announced she is stepping down after fourteen years serving the Surrey Docks ward, triggering a by-election on June 9.

Lisa Rajan has said caring for her young family, her full-time employment and her husband’s job moving to Manchester has meant giving the community the commitment it deserves more difficult.

She said: “It is with huge sadness that I am standing down as one of the Liberal Democrat councillors for Surrey Docks.

“For fourteen years I have had the greatest privilege of representing an incredible community and helping win the fights for the new Canada Water Library and the C10 bus route.

“Being a councillor needs serious

commitment though and I'm very sorry that changes in my personal life mean that I can no longer serve residents the way Liberal Democrat councillors believe we should always do.

“Fourteen years after first being elected, there are still huge issues in Surrey Docks. Most importantly, we need to make the council's regeneration process happen 'with' residents and not 'to' them.

“We also need proper infrastructure in place - GPs, schools and transport - before further huge development takes place at Canada Water.

“I really want to thank residents for their support over the years and hope they will continue to back the Liberal Democrats as the best choice to fight residents’ corner in Surrey Docks.”

Two years ago Lisa ran the London Marathon dressed as Wonder Woman to raise funds for the Rotherhithe Time and Talents community centre.

This will be the third council byelection this year after MPs Neil Coyle and MP Helen Hayes announced they were to stand down from their councillor roles in the Newington and College wards.

The by-elections for both seats are today, Thursday, May 5.

Primary pupils in school walk-out in protest against Sats exams

PRIMARY SCHOOL pupils across Southwark joined protestors around the country by staging a ‘kids’ strike’ on Tuesday, against new government-imposed Sats exams.

Parents and ten-to-eleven-year-olds from Ivydale School in Nunhead, and Fairlawn School near Dulwich, took part in the walk-out, led by the Let the Kids Be Kids campaign.

Steve Rose, a parent of three children among the 140 to miss school from Ivydale, told the News: “It’s reached a point where six-andseven-year-olds are expected to learn what a subordinating conjunction is – something that would be lost on the vast majority of parents.

“To me it reflects an incredibly narrow curriculum, and to many parents it comes at the expense of better, more joyful learning.

“With [secretary of state for education] Nick Morgan’s policy for making all schools into academies, its looks even more like education is being taken out parents’ and councils’ hands.

“There are scores of angry and concerned parents who can’t stand that this style of testing is happening but can’t think what to do about it. So we held an alternative "fun day of learning" at the Horniman Museum on [Tuesday] morning.”

Similar events were also held around the country and an online petition had gained 47,000 signatures

by Wednesday, calling for teachers to boycott Sats exams.

The petition, created by the Let the Kids Be Kids group, said children are

“over-tested, over-worked and in a school system that places more importance on test results and league tables than children’s happiness and joy of learning”.

Deputy head teach of Ivydale Primary School, Helen Ingham, told the News: “While the school is sympathetic with the views of parents about the government’s education reforms and we understand why some parents have decided to take this action, we have made it clear to

all parents that school is open as usual on Tuesday.

“Children who are absent from school as a result of this action will be recorded as having an unauthorised absence.”

Steve, a writer for The Guardian, added: “It was short notice, and the idea spread around the country quite quickly.

“In the end only one parent from our school said they are not in favour, and many couldn’t take part because

they couldn’t get off work. But we had another 200 letters of support from those parents who couldn’t take part.”

In defence of the exams, due to continue next week, education Secretary Nicky Morgan said: “To those who say we should let our children be creative, imaginative, and happy – of course I agree, both as a parent and as the Education Secretary.

“But I would ask them this – how

Denis Pougin, the All People's Party College ward candidate, said: “If I am elected, I will work hard every day to provide better housing for residents and ensure that leaseholders are given value for money from the council.

"I will protect and support local business owners so we can continue to build a vibrant local economy and take measures to ensure there will be enough school places for our children in Southwark."

The Dulwich Festival returns with two weeks of family fun

The doctors undertook industrial action on Tuesday and Wednesday last week in the ongoing contracts dispute with the government.

But the medics, who received plenty of biscuits and other snacks during their time on the picket line, opted to donate their haul to Southwark Foodbank, part of Pecan.

Felicia Boshorin, the foodbank’s project manager, said: “They got in touch and donated food and people started giving money and that’s how it came about.

“It was really humbling to think that while they were going through their own struggles they were thinking of the needs of others.”

Southwark Foodbank has been running for six years and last year served around 4,000 food parcels to residents in need of their services.

They are run mainly by volunteers, with only two paid members of staff

A MUM of two is taking on a daily 5km challenge this month to raise money for the cancer support charity she works for.

Hannah Monteith, a fundraiser at Dimbleby Cancer Care, is going to be taking part the Every Day in May sports challenge and hopes to raise £150 for the charity.

The 38-year-old, from Beckenham will cover 5km every day during the month of May for the challenge organised by fitnaturally.

She said: “I’ve recently let things slip a bit and with two young boys to run around after I was finding that my sedentary desk job and gym phobia were getting in the way and making me feel old and unfit.

Walking is great low impact exercise and I know this will help boost my energy levels and get me out in the fresh air, something I really need after this long winter.”

Participants will cover either 5km or 10km by any self-powered means, so anything from walking, running, swimming, cycling and skating and it doesn’t matter about location or time of day.

Every Day in May is a global sports challenge with people all over the world taking part.

This year marks the start of the 50th

LEGAL ACTION has been dropped against the notorious Kingdom Church in Camberwell, which previously faced fines from the council for its noisy mid-night sermons.

The church and its leader, Bishop Climate Irungu Wiseman (pictured), had been fined £7,500 after Southwark Council received more than 100 noise complaints in response to its various sermons, including a weekly 3am healing ceremony.

But in a “miracle” turnaround, the judge at the Inner London Crown Court hearing on Friday upheld the church’s appeal against the fine.

After the hearing on Friday, Bishop Climate said: “We couldn’t believe the outcome, as a spiritual man, I believe it was the hand of God. He did intervene.

After having our monthly Fire Service last month I knew God was going to perform an extraordinary miracle.”

“We admit we made noise, but we were appealing against the size of the fine, and the judge has found in favour. He has quashed the whole thing. We want to live

in peace with our neighbours. People have the right to complain, but some of the things the council said about our church were not true.”

Bishop Climate claims to oversee hundreds of churches across the globe including The Kingdom Church in Camberwell Station Road. He also said that news of the fines had spread worldwide, with people even coming up to him in the street during a recent visit to Africa.

A Southwark Council spokeswoman confirmed the conviction was upheld, and the sentence amended after the Bishop presented evidence suggesting he was unable to pay the fine. The church’s licensing review, undertaken by the council, has also been adjourned.

Foundation celebrates its charitable status

A GRASSROOTS cancer charity, The MumMum Foundation, is celebrating being officially given its charitable status - by giving a Bermondsey woman battling the disease a night at a West End musical.

Camberwell man Gary Valentine Fuller set up the charity in memory of his late grandma, Carol Rogers, whom he his family and “everyone she knew” used to call MumMum. The 25-year-old said: “MumMum passed away in November 2013. I absolutely worshiped her. She was my world.

“She had cancer for five years and it got the better of her. I know losing a loved one can be such a traumatic time that I decided I wanted to help other families.

“I’m an undertaker by trade, so I’m used to dealing with bereavement, but we set the charity up partly as a coping mechanism. Doing good things for other

people can really be a powerful way of helping you through.”

They took the decision to create The MumMum Foundation on the one-year anniversary of Carol’s death, and to carry on her legacy of dedication to charity work.

Gary has said their donation will be to support the family of 24-year-old Tilly Browne, who has been diagnosed with incurable breast cancer.

Tilly’s chronic relationship with the disease is caused by her suffering from LiFraumeni Syndrome, an extremely rare genetic disease that makes carriers prone to developing cancer.

Gary said: “We’re going to pay for Tilly and her family to go and see Motown the Musical at prime time on Saturday night, and have dinner out wherever she likes.

“Tilly’s fighting spirit has been inspirational and we would also like to support her throughout her treatment.

“With cases like Tilly we want to put a smile on her face and show her people really care about her.”

“We also want to thank everyone for their support in the last year who supported out charity.

The Mum Mum Foundation will also hold a fundraiser at the Nag’s Head pub in Camberwell on June 18.

Another fundraising event for Tilly will take place at the Lightbox in Lambeth Place on Saturday, with a house music club night starting at 10pm. Tickets will be £20 on the door.

Local traders Suncatchers and Mirrors are also due to host an online auction on their ‘Sun Catchers and Mirrors’ Facebook Group this Sunday, with prizes including a new TV and signed prints of Formula One legend Michael Schumacher.

New team helps Ethan get home quicker

FIVE-YEAR-OLD Ethan Rigby is one of the first youngsters to benefit from a new service that helps children with short-term illnesses get expert nursing care at home rather than in hospital.

The Evelina London Children's Hospital @home team helps children get home from hospital quicker and, in some cases, means they don’t have to come into hospital at all. The service runs from 8am to 10pm, seven days a week.

Ethan’s mum, Megan Rigby, says: “Ethan was diagnosed with eczema when he was six weeks old.

"His skin gets very itchy so he’ll bite it and rub it against rough surfaces, like the edge of the table or carpet, to scratch it.

When the skin breaks, it makes Ethan prone to infections.”

Ethan was admitted to hospital in February with cellulitis, a skin infection that can lead to septicaemia, a potentially life-threatening blood infection. He was given antibiotics through an intravenous drip and stayed in hospital for two days.

Megan says: “The doctors said Ethan could stay in hospital or be helped to get

better by the @home team. Evelina London is not just round the corner for me and I knew it would be better for Ethan to have his things around him and still be able to go to school.

“The @home team came out to check his progress and make sure his hand was healing properly. I was given lots of help and advice including a refresher course on using a special tape with steroids. It helps the skin to heal when the eczema gets very bad.

“I think this is a brilliant service which saves a lot of time, money and stress, and it feels personalised to you. Ethan would have been taking up a hospital bed which could have been used by a child who really needed it. Now I have the @home team’s telephone number and I know I can call them anytime for advice.”

The service, which has seen more than 80 children since February, is being piloted for 18 months and is available to children living in or registered with a GP in Southwark and Lambeth. Currently referrals are made by the Trust’s hospital consultants.

Homelessness nurses shortlisted for photo prize

TWO NURSES working with London's most vulnerable people have had their photographs shortlisted for the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Care on Camera Award.

Kendra Schneller and Rachel Smith, who work for Guy's and St Thomas' health inclusion team, entered the competition to highlight the challenges faced by community nurses caring for homeless people, refugees, asylum seekers, and drug and alcohol users.

The duo’s three photographs are among just 50 images shortlisted from more than 800 entries to tour the UK as part of an exhibition to celebrate the RCN’s centenary.

The competition's winners will be chosen by a panel of judges and there is also a 'People's Choice' award for the

public to cast their vote for the photograph that best represents nursing in 2016.

Nurse practitioner Kendra has two photos - 'Open all hours' and 'Help...I need somebody...Not just anybody' - on the shortlist.

She says: "Homeless people move around a lot, we never know when we will see them again. So we've become a onestop shop.

"We may be dressing an ulcer, taking bloods or prescribing medication but we're also making use of that opportunistic moment to address other issues like getting them new clothes or giving advice on sharing needles."

Dame Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse at Guy's and St Thomas', says: "Kendra and Rachel's shortlisting is a fantastic achievement. Their photos show how far the role of the nurse has come in 100

years.”

Grateful family’s ‘thank you’ for intensive care team THE FAMILY of a patient who received lifesaving intensive care have raised £23,000 for Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Simon Dredge was so seriously injured in a power boat accident in May 2015 that at first doctors thought it was unlikely he would survive. However, he was brought to the Intensive Care Unit at St Thomas’ Hospital where an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine was used to support his heart and lungs.

ECMO removes blood from the body, artificially pumping out carbon dioxide and replacing oxygen. It is used in intensive care medicine to help patients who are unable to breathe for themselves.

My definition of affordable is different to the Tories’ which includes starter-homes costing up to £450,000 – how that is ‘affordable’ to most people I don’t know. My definition of affordable is one of three things – available at a social rent, available at a London Living Rent which is one third of average local earnings, or part-buy part-rent. With me as Mayor 50 per cent of the new homes built across London will have to meet this definition.

How are you going to tackle knife crime?

I have a ten-point plan to tackle violent crime.

The plan includes restoring real neighbourhood policing which has been devastated by Tory cuts, better prevention programmes, engaging with young people in schools and in the community to stop them joining gangs, a requirement for hospitals to report knife injuries, and pushing for more powers to ensure tough community payback on top of their sentencing for those caught carrying a knife.

Will you look at removing the Elephant and Castle roundabout?

I think with a lot of big schemes it often takes a while to let them bed down, so it’s important we give it a bit of time. But, of course, if it is

proven that things have got more dangerous I’ll look again. One of the things I’ll do is have an urgent review of the most dangerous junctions across the city, identifying dangerous intersections and getting on with the job of making them safer.

Should the Bakerloo Line extension go to Camberwell?

Areas like Southwark and Lewisham have been disadvantaged by not being part of the tube network. When deciding on a final route TfL should take into account which area can most benefit, what additional housing can be developed as a result of the link, what the costs will be and what the business benefits will be, as well as the opinions of local residents. But rest assured, I’m 100 per cent behind extending the Bakerloo line into south east London.

What can the mayor do to help reinvigorate our high streets?

It’s important we protect the character of our high streets. Rising land values in London are causing real pressure on many high streets and we are losing a lot of smaller retailers. I don’t want London’s shopping areas to all look the same, that’s why I’ll be tougher in using the Mayor’s planning powers to protect London’s smaller shops and markets which contribute to some of the city’s best shopping areas.

s well as voting for London Assembly members on Thursday, voters will also choose the next Mayor of London.

With Conservative incumbent Boris Johnson vacating the position after eight years, twelve candidates from a variety of parties are up for the role.

This will be the third mayor to run City Hall since the position was created in 2000, with Labour Ken Livingstone being the first.

Voters will be given a pink ballot paper on May 5 with the option of selected two of their preferred candidates.

ZAC GOLDSMITH - CONSERVATIVE

IT’S ACCEPTED Affordable Housing isn’t affordable. Will you change the definition to make it affordable?

Affordable housing policy is one that enables mixed community. I'd back starter homes, shared ownership, the London Help to Buy and social housing.

It's about making sure that when you build new homes on publicly owned land that those homes aren't sold off as investments so they have to be sold to Londoners.

I'd make that a rule for homes built on mayoral controlled land.

How are you going to tackle knife crime?

We need greater use of intelligence-led stop and search. We've gone too far in the wrong direction and people walk around carrying weapons with impunity.

I'll continue to make the case for devolution of youth justice funding so we could be more imaginative. It costs £60,000 a year to lock up a young person and it costs a fraction of that to invest in preventing them getting into trouble.

Will you look at removing the Elephant and Castle roundabout?

I've already spoken to councillors and supporters in the area about the Elephant and Castle problem and I made a commitment to

I'm committed to making the extension happen and to deliver as much it as I can. I will work with authorities, councillors and communities to make sure all these extensions are actually regeneration projects to help areas that need regeneration the most.

I don't want to make the commitment to Camberwell now because there are so many projects that I need to go through.

What can the mayor do to help reinvigorate our high streets?

I found a £20m underspend in the budget which I'm going to put towards helping High Streets throughout London. We haven't identified all the areas that are going to be helped but it will be spent by the local BIDs. The big opportunity we're going to have soon is devolution of business rates which will allow the next mayor working with business minded authorities to tip the balance in favour of small and medium sized businesses, start ups and high streets.

I'd like the budget to be bigger but I'm not committing to spending money that I'm not convinced we have. And there will be plenty of savings that we could find by taking a ruthless approach to inefficiencies in TfL.

IT’S ACCEPTED Affordable Housing isn’t affordable. Will you change the definition to make it affordable?

I want to change the definition of affordable housing from the current 80 per cent of market rate measurement the Conservatives use – it just isn’t affordable. We need to be talking much more about social housing, which is 30 per cent. My plan is to raise £2bn for new housing while keeping council tax at last year’s rates, and using the tax revenue to borrow more money against it.

How are you going to tackle knife crime?

The police have got to invest in preventative work. I also want to see more work done in A&E departments where victims can talk with youth workers about their experience, so we can get better evidence and help steer them away from knife crime in future.

It’s a scheme that I have already seen in King’s College Hospital, run by a charity called Red Thread, and Oasis at St Thomas’s Hospital. This idea should be rolled out across London.

Will you look at removing the Elephant and Castle roundabout?

I’m in favour of doing something that can

make cycling in London safer. But I have to say I find the Elephant and Castle very confusing as a cyclist, pedestrian or when I have been through on the bus. I understand that people worry it’s not safe. We have also seen two fatalities there. But we need to see how it settles down.

Should the Bakerloo Line extension go to Camberwell?

I have long campaigned for more than one station to be added to the Bakerloo extension. I like the two-loop suggestion: one going down Camberwell Road and one going down Old Kent Road. Otherwise a new Thameslink Station could be revived at the old Camberwell Railway Station.

What can the mayor do to help reinvigorate our high streets?

I had not picked up that they [Co-Op and Santander] were leaving the Blue. It’s a shame. I spent a lot of time campaigning there. I would continue the fund that councils can bid for from the mayor to invest in their high streets and town centres. We are seeing towns move more towards a model where attractions are bringing people in. Also, it’s really important we do invest in our highstreets, and makes them more accessible with more cycling-parking and by making them more pedestrian friendly, whatever we can do to attract people to shop there.

Working with the big developers on big schemes and trying to persuade them to deliver us affordable housing doesn't work.

We need to work outside that system.

We need to use the public land, work with cooperatives and people who want to set up community land trusts.

Will you look at removing the Elephant and Castle roundabout?

The right thing to do is peninsular-isation, which is taking a roundabout and joining up one end. We're doing the same thing in Archway. These big roundabouts are bad but getting the details right is always important and difficult.

Should the Bakerloo Line extension go to Camberwell?

We need to re-open the station on the [overground] line as well which goes north to Elephant. We need something to fill in that gap and what I've said I will do in terms of raising money for that is the workplace parking levy. There are lots of people driving into London and if we put a levy on the parking spaces they use we can raise a bit of money.

What can the mayor do to help reinvigorate our high streets?

I want a Town Centre Fund that can be used

by BIDS and local communities. I'd get it from a levy on the big supermarkets.

It would be places that have very large floor space that pay an extra levy on business rights to go into funds that the town centres can use.

How are you going to tackle knife crime?

I would get more community officers on the streets and re-prioritising what the police does. I would work with communities around London to understand what the police need to do.

We've got a problem with young people living in overcrowded homes, not really being able to socialise We have a duty in London to young people for them to have things to do that are constructive after school and in the evenings and so youth services need to be funded.

I would do this by increasing the council tax precept that goes towards the police by how much you can which is 2 per cent.

I would also get the police to be more representative of Londoners. I will make sure we have a gender balanced police force and one that is actually 40 per cent from London's ethnic minorities.

Tackling air pollution is also really important to me. This crisis is taking the lives of thousands of people and costing the European economy £1tn a year.

To solve this I will adopt electric and hydrogen powered buses.

Other policies I would introduce connection to the internet through a thing called Li-Fi where an internet connection is transmitted on the light spectrum via LED light bulbs 100 times faster than WiFi. I’d also legalise cannabis to cut crime through controlling it. Otherwise the trade just funds it.

LEE HARRIS - CANNABIS IS SAFER THAN ALCOHOL

LEE HARRIS, 79, is the Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol party candidate for London Mayor. Lee is a cannabis pioneer and is the editor of Homegrown, Europe’s first cannabis magazine.

Lee was unavailable for interview but sent the News a quote about why Londoners should vote for him on May 5.

He said: “As Londoners turn to the polls next Thursday I ask them to picture a city where ordinary people aren’t criminalised for cannabis.

“Cannabis prohibition is clearly not working and divides London’s communities, wastes the resources of the police, and criminalise the young in particular.

“Ending prohibition and introducing sensible regulation will help to heal our city.

“We can take money out of the pockets of criminal gangs and instead raise tax on cannabis to invest in London’s infrastructure, the NHS, housing, and public health.

“The world’s attitude to cannabis is changing while London is being left behind.

A vote for me is a vote for a progressive, procannabis London.”

Lee’s party centres around opposition to the War on Drugs and believes that prohibition is always doomed to failure.

If elected Mayor Lee will work to change the public’s perception of cannabis and its legal status. The Cannabis is Safer Than Alcohol party was launched in Febuary last year and contested the 2015 General Election campaigning for a Royal Commission to review the UK’s drug laws.

PRINCE JOHN ZYLINSKI - INDEPENDENT

PRINCE JOHN Zylinski is a Polish aristocrat from old Russian nobility born in London in 1951. He is the owner of the famous grand White House in Ealing and is an independent candidate for London Mayor.

On Housing It’s a matter of supply and demand and we’ve been starved of supply. I’ve been a builder all my life and I know how to deliver genuinely affordable housing. I want to build a million homes.

We need to cut the red tape, allow builders to build and then sales will stabilise.

As mayor I would provide a 5 per cent mayoral mortgage guarantee to top up the national Help to Buy scheme to enable every Londoner to buy a home.

On the Elephant roundabout The answer to traffic problems is to alter things on a micro level and locally. Just moving something a few feet can ripple to help out on a larger scale. We need site specific answers.

Other policies I want to plant a million trees in London to help it become the greenest city on the planet as well as cut the bus and tube fares by half to make travel more affordable for all.

In recognition of the polish community in London I will also build a monument to the Polish airmen who fought in the Second World War on Hyde Park Corner.

I also think it is important to fight for more money for arts and cultural exchanges that reflect the diverse population of this great city.

DAVID FURNESS - THE BRITISH NATIONAL PARTY (BNP)

On housing:

We want to build high-quality housing on brown field sites. There’s a lot of horded land and some sort of land tax should be used to make sure brown field sites get built on.

We’re not advising building on green belt land, and we do want to see more use of solar panels on new builds.

On knife crime:

We want five-year minimum prison sentences and a zero-tolerance approach to knife crime. It seems that now they cut back on stop-and-search that knife crime has increased.

We also want to reduce crime by improving street lighting. It helps people feel safer and reduces accidents.

On the Elephant roundabout: It’s very congested and confusing. I took a wrong

turning and ended up in a congestion zone by mistake and got walloped with a fine. They are trying to please everyone with it but it’s gone too far, but the root problem is congestion and overuse, and that is down to immigration, which is the key theme of our London policy: to stop immigration now.

On extending the Bakerloo Line:

If there is an obvious gap for it then it should be filled. They could pay for it by cutting waste and vanity projects elsewhere. For they should scrap the Garden Bridge which is expected to cost £170m to build and another £2-3m to maintain every year.

On rejuvenating high streets:

People are avoiding high streets because of high car-parking charges. We need a scheme where perhaps you can park for free for the first 30 minutes.

SOPHIE WALKER - WOMEN'S EQUALITY PARTY

What the party stands for:

Women are often treated as a special interest group and not realised as half the population. We’re black, disabled and LGBT and we all deserve equal opportunity and equal pay. We are the only party offering joint membership with other parties. We are using the same methods UKIP used to put the EU referendum to the top of people’s agendas, and the same tactics the Greens use to get everyone talking about the environment.

On housing:

The pay gap between men and women is 23 per cent and women are twice as likely to spend more than half their wage on rent. Our party wants funding to be ring-fenced for women and children fleeing domestic abuse, of which there were 100,000 incidents reported last year. Too many refuge centres are closing due to lack of funding

On housing:

Make all state benefits, housing and assistance available only to British citizens; house London’s 3,000 homeless veterans.

On crime:

Implement a radical reversal of the legal and policing focus on the “rights” of criminals and its replacement with the traditional focus on putting the victims of crime first. Greater use of National Service for habitual offenders; the restoration of Capital

On housing:

Social housing should be prioritised for people who have lived in an area for more than five years.

To find space to build new homes I recommend setting up a London-wide register of brown field sites. There are huge amounts of areas we can use, and we should incentive developers to build on them.

A key part of UKIP’s message is the increase in demand from immigration outstripping supply, which is greatly down to our membership with the European Union. Our party is not anti-immigration, but we need to control it to stop this growth in demand.

On crime:

We support the use of stop-and-search because it does work and it saves lives. But it needs to be intelligence-led, it can’t be indiscriminate and arbitrary. It needs local policing with officers being kept in the same areas, not moved around. We also

need commissioning powers to be devolved to borough commanders with local knowledge.

On congestion: Something people will find hard to believe is that one in ten cars on the road are private hire vehicles.

This colossal increase is leading to the possible extinction of the black cab trade, as well as adding to congestion. We would freeze all new licensing of private hire vehicles and or double their congestion charges.

On the Bakerloo Line: Having grown up in south London I can tell you what it’s like to have hardly known what it was like to use the Tube. It would be great if it could go to the Old Kent Road and New Cross.

On saving our high streets: A scheme like 30minute free parking through the week and free at the weekend for longer periods would incentive people to come back to their shopping centres.

On crime:

There were 3,000 stabbings last year, but there were five times more incidents of rape. If we start taking rape seriously and have a diverse police force that’s better trained, we will be better able to tackle this.

On transport:

TfL has got to get better at collaborating with communities when consultations happen. Most of all we need to get back to basics with making buses and the underground more accessible to the elderly, people who are disabled, and parents with push chairs. Any new Bakerloo Line stations should be accessible to all.

On technology:

We need to invest in tech skills for schools for children and teach coding. We also need to do more to make education of computer skills more widely available to the public to make more people employable, and to increase diversity in employment.

Punishment for paedophiles, terrorists and murderers. Make prisons a place of hard labour rather than cosy holiday camps; Introduce the use of “chain gangs” to provide labour for national public works.

Free the police from politically-correct restrictions and unnecessary bureaucracy.

Implement new laws guaranteeing citizens the right to protect their own homes.

Voting day and a protected cycle-lane

T

ODAY IS election day in Southwark. We have three votes: for the London Mayor, for our own single Southwark and Lambeth Greater London Assembly (GLA) member and for the party proportional London wide GLA members.

The two biggest challenges facing London are the threats posed to it by flooding due to the climate crisis and the horrific levels of deaths and lifeincapacitating illnesses caused by transport pollution. The estimated deaths over the next four years from pollution in Southwark is 1,200 people.

Recent studies have confirmed that children living or going to school near heavily polluted roads can have their lung development stunted for life.

Research has also confirmed the link between asthma and transport pollution.

There are over 12,000 registered asthma sufferers in Southwark, including thousands of kids. The NHS estimated that £20 billion a year or 16% of its budget is spent treating the huge numbers of people affected by pollution caused diseases. A recent survey showed that this was parent’s top worry about their children in Southwark and across London.

The creation of a protected cycle-lane network in Southwark and across London would be a major positive contribution to tackling both problems, as it eliminates both carbon emissions and results in cleaner air. It would also enable our kids to cycle more safely to school, as they do in Holland in huge numbers.

So where do the major parties stand on the issue?

The cycling campaign group Stop Killing Cyclists challenged all of them to commit to raising the current tiny Transport for London safer cycling budget of 1.4% to 10% by 2020. Tory Zac Goldsmith refused to raise the budget by even a penny. Labour’s Sadiq Khan said he would raise it to 2.8%. Lib Dem Caroline Pidgeon, who is a former Southwark councillor promised 3%. Only the Green Party’s Sian Berry promised to deliver the full 10% needed by 2020 and she also detailed exactly where the funding would come from. UKIP did not give any answer but their policies historically have been deeply anticycling.

But whichever way you vote, I do hope you go out today and exercise your hard fought for right to vote.

Kids go on strike over government school plans We are doing all we can to help residents

It was with great concern that we read in your newspaper last week of the ongoing anti-social behaviour issues at Arch Street ‘Hallway to hell, Southwark News, April 28, 2016.

This is something we, as local councillors, have been concerned about for some time.

Over the last few months, we have been in discussions with some residents and the management at L&Q about these issues, but it is clear to us that actions taken so far have not been urgent or effective enough. We also regularly raise anti-social behaviour issues around the Elephant and Castle with the local police.

As part of our communication with residents in the ward, we and Neil Coyle, MP, hold regular surgeries in the area, details of which can be found on the Southwark Council website. We urge residents to meet with us at these surgeries, and to get in touch whenever issues like this affect them. We also knocked on all residents’ doors a couple of weeks ago as part of our regular walkabouts, and we would encourage people to report issues like this when they see us in the ward.

It is clear that there have been antisocial behaviour issues not only in Arch Street but in this western corner of the ward for the last eighteen months. Councillors have met with venues and residents on the Rockingham Estate, Meadow Row, Smeaton Court and Albert Barnes House in order to develop a coordinated response by the police, parking team and night time economy teams but there is still much work to be done to resolve the issues.

We make representations to Cllr Mark Williams and Cllr Michael Situ

regularly in order to ask them to ensure that these issues are considered during the ongoing regeneration of Elephant and Castle.

It is our hope that this, along with the development of the Low Line along the route of the railway line, will design out these problems so that the area does not attract anti-social behaviour in the future.

We will continue to raise anti-social behaviour issues with the policing teams, whose strength has been cut due to the actions of Mayor Boris Jonson in City Hall.

However, we recognise that this does not solve the problem right now, and so we have written to L&Q following the most recent incidents to express our dissatisfaction with their response so far. We will also arrange to meet with residents to discuss actions we can take in the future so that they can enjoy their homes without fear for their children’s safety.

ON THE 23rd April Bonamy and Bramcote put on their 11th St George’s Day event at Ilderton Road Primary School.

The weather was cold but the rain stayed away so the children had their bouncy castle and the Punch and Judy show. I think the adults enjoyed it as well.

Dora pooped in to say hello. We had two Chelsea Pensioners – always a pleasure to see them.

There were so many people who helped on the day. We would like to thank Ann Clayton, Kiri Mary and all our friends from the Ledbury Estate, Caroline Gardens, Copic Astley Cooper and Avondale Estates - well done all.

The children enjoyed the popcorn, candy floss, face painting, tattooist and flower bouquet lessons from Vicky. Millwall came and did the beat the goalie competition. We had twenty raffle prizes and would like to thank Tesco’s for their voucher, Russell our fish man down the Blue for his voucher and Simon in the butchers also gave a voucher, and Mike in the Deli who gave a meal for two – so a big thank you to them.

The reptile man with his snakes, lizards etc. was a big favourite with the children. The children had the chance to dress up as St George, a prince, a princess or a dragon – great fun. Even the adults joined in and the photos taken by Steve Daszko were brilliant and fun.

Part of the entertainment was given by the Big Local South Bermondsey Choir – they are very good. There was stalls with jewellery, books, chutney and craft.

The entry charge was 50p and that included their picnic lunch bag and a free raffle ticket and all money raised, £250, will be given to Bede House for learning disabilities.

Thank you also to Sue Sexton and Gary Maygold for signing everyone in and Bob Roberts for the PA system. Last but not least was all of you who came. Without you we would have looked a bit silly so thank you so much for your support.

Holocaust Exhibition (Over 14s) Film

When author J M Barrie gifted the rights of Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital, he bestowed one of the most generous bequests ever given to a hospital. This resulted in the hospital receiving royalties from every adaptation or production of Peter Pan ever staged. The result of a partnership between Great Ormond Street and the Florence Nightingale Museum at St Thomas’ Hospital, this exhibition will showcase a number of artefacts never seen before in public.

The exhibition will include early editions with classic illustrations of the story including works by Mabel Lucie Attwell and Arthur Rackham, and Peter Pan’s Postbag, a collection of children’s letters sent to Peter Pan from 1906-14. Also on display is the original bell that was used as the “voice” of Tinker Bell in the 1904 play and a selection of Peter Pan memorabilia never before displayed in public.

LESS THAN a year before allied forces reclaimed Europe, the world’s first ever ballistic missiles, launchable from hundreds of miles away, and able to penetrate the Earth’s atmosphere, were beginning to fall on London.

At fourteen metres from nose to fin, weighing 12,500kg and equipped with sophisticated targeting systems, they were arguably the most influential military invention of WW2, setting the path for technology used in America’s space exploration.

The day of the first V2 bomb attack was September 8, 1944, and the unpredictable raids continued until March 27, 1945.

Records of tragedies in Southwark are among the items in an exhibition that has been collected and curated by Françoise Dupré, the niece of a French military prisoner Robert Berthelot, who endured and survived life in concentration camps.

Her work for the DORA art project is inspired by her visit to the Mittelbau-Dora Concentration

Camp Memorial in Germany, where her uncle was imprisoned.

The tortured image of mangled brick-work and steel was taken after a blast on the John Bull Arch railway bridge across Southwark Park Road was struck on November 5 at 10.55pm.

The blast catapulted a panorama of shrapnel, and debris across 123 surrounding houses and shops, as well onto the Shuttleworth factory.

Three were killed, 51 were injured, 16 of them seriously.

On the evening of Sunday December 17, as workers would have been turning for home, the R White’s water bottling factory in Albany Road and Bagshot Street was destroyed beyond repair by a V2 hit. Such was the immensity of the explosion that some 40 little terraced homes were taken with it. Families huddled in their garden Anderson Shelters up to 400 yards away had felt the effects. The level of destruction was counted as 17 killed and 50 injured; 22 of them seriously.

Today, the area forms part of Burgess Park.

“In London people remember the Blitz, but that was only stage of the war. There was this later stage of V2s,” said Françoise.

Indeed, the raids were less

frequent, and came with almost no warning, but a skim through the statistics shows their destruction was far more wide-ranging.

Not all targets turned out to be strategic, and residential spaces like Lordship Lane in Dulwich were similarly left cratered by a strike on

January 4.

Two days later, a Peckham neighbourhood between Azenby Road and Lyndhurst Road was razed to the ground. What had been the site of a railway workshops and railway carriages, as well as a toilet paper factory were severely damaged, along with 150 homes. Incredibly, none were killed, but 41 were injured. Part of Azenby Road was rebuilt as Warwick Gardens in 1963.

The collection form the DORA projects lists 21 separate strikes in the historic Camberwell and old Southwark areas alone.

Françoise’s fascination for the V2 comes from her uncle’s accidental contribution as a slave labourer to the construction of Nazis’ V2 rocket project.

She says two-thirds of those who were victims of the V2s were the men enslaved by the Nazis, handpicked from concentration camps, and forced to dig the vast, secretive factories where they were the rockets were developed at the Peenemünde Military Test Site.

underground factory. It was extraordinary in scale,” Françoise said.

“He was involved in digging the tunnels where the colossal V2s were developed at the Peenemünde on the Baltic island of Usedom.

“My father was selected for his engineering ability. He was taken from another camp called the Buchenwald and was moved from digging to the assembly line.

“The aim was to link the two sites of terror: the concentration camps, with south east London, where there were a lot of hits, and was a working-class area and had a huge impact on people’s lives.

“At the same time I wanted to tell the story of the V2 and my uncle’s journey.”

Terrazza on the Thames, housed at the Columbia restaurant in Rotherhithe Street, is the peninsula’s newest pop-up bar. Themed on the

romantic and storied Italian city and dreamed up by Venetian winery Bolla, the bar will be open from 4pm every day this summer.

And while the boat trip from Embankment may be a touch unnecessary for SE16 residents, it is certainly a more authentic way to arrive at a Venice-themed bar than the C10 – especially when free drinks were provided on board to celebrate the terrace’s launch night.

We disembarked and made our way to the terrace, which boasts incredible panoramic views of Canary Wharf and the Thames – a more than acceptable substitute for St Mark’s Square and the Grand Canal. There were no gondolas in the water, admittedly, but if you squinted just right when one of those waste transportation boats drifted by you could almost trick yourself.

After admiring the view for the customary 30 seconds or so we decided to source some drinks, the Prosecco from the clipper now either drunk or spilt. We started with a

couple of glasses of Bolla Sparkling Rose before graduating to Bolla Prosecco DOCG. After that it was time for a couple of Bolla cocktails.

And while the menu can seem a little Bolla-heavy at times, when the drinks were as enjoyable as they were it is hard to argue.

They say there is no bad time to visit Venice but unfortunately the same cannot be said for Rotherhithe. Late April is perfect to open a summer pop-up bar in theory but, unfortunately for the organisers, the day itself was bitterly cold and windy.

Attendees flocked like moths to the electric heaters or ventured inside to the comfort of central heating and sofas. An optimistic ice-cream seller stood forlornly at a stand, her back turned to the icy breeze skipping off the Thames.

Hattie and I braved the cold for the sake of food, which came in the form of freshly-made ‘pizzette’ – a far fancier way to say ‘mini pizzas.’ We chose one each of The Florita, made with spinach, egg and parmesan, and

The Dock, with pulled pork, pepperoni, salami and mozzarella, before hurrying inside, throwing sympathetic looks to a pair of scantily clad dancers who were doing a remarkable job of not shivering on a podium.

Inside we finished off our pizette and helped ourselves to some more cocktails – first a Bollini and a Rossini, which were made with peach and raspberry puree mixed with Ballo Prosecco respectively, and then two glasses of One Night in Venice.

Like many others by this stage, we were suitably warmed by a combination of the radiators and the alcohol, so we wandered outside to take in the view once again. With the towers across the Thames sparkling in the growing darkness, and the ice cream seller now doing surprisingly brisk business, Hattie and I sat down on a bench shaped like a gondola to enjoy a final glass of Bollini each.

Life in Venice, SE16, is certainly bene – even if Rotherhithe’s Thameschilled weather refuses to play along.

The London Borough of Southwark (hereinafter called the Acquiring Authority) may acquire any of the land described in the Schedule hereto by making a general vesting declaration under section 4 of the Compulsory Purchase (Vesting Declarations) Act 1981. This has the effect, subject to paragraph 4 below, of vesting the land in the Acquiring Authority at the end of the period mentioned in paragraph 2 below. A declaration may not be made before the end of a period of two months from the first publication of a notice which includes this statement except with the consent in writing of every occupier of the land affected.

Notices concerning general vesting declaration 2.

As soon as may be after the Acquiring Authority make a general vesting declaration, they must serve notice of it on every occupier of any of the land specified in the declaration (except land where there is one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) and on every person who gives them information relating to the land in pursuance of the invitation contained in any notice. When the service of notices of the general vesting declaration is completed, a further period begins to run. This period, which must be not less than 28 days, will be specified in the declaration. On the first day after the end of this period (“the vesting date”) the land described in the declaration will, subject to what is said in paragraph 4, vest in the Acquiring Authority together with the right to enter on the land and take possession of it. Every person on whom the Acquiring Authority could have served a notice to treat in respect of his interest in the land (other than a tenant under one of the tenancies described in paragraph 3) will be entitled to claim compensation for the acquisition of his interest in the land, with interest on the compensation from the vesting date.

In the case of certain tenancies, the position stated above is subject to modifications. The modifications apply where the tenancy is either a “minor tenancy”, ie a tenancy for a year or a yearly tenancy or a lesser interest, or “a long tenancy which is about to expire”. The later expression means a tenancy granted for an interest greater than a minor tenancy but having on the vesting date a period still to run which is not more than the period specified in the declaration for this purpose (which must be more than a year). In calculating how long a tenancy has still to run, where any option to renew or to terminate it is available to either party, it shall be assumed that the landlord will take every opportunity open to him to terminate the tenancy while the tenant will use every opportunity to retain or renew his interest.

The modifications are that the Acquiring Authority may not exercise the right of entry referred to in paragraph 2 in respect of land subject to a tenancy described in paragraph 3 unless they first serve notice to treat in respect of the tenancy and then serve every occupier of the land with a notice of their intention to enter and take possession after the period (not less than 14 days from the service of the notice) specified in the notice. The right of entry will be exercisable at the end of that period. The vesting of the land will be subject to the tenancy until the end of that period or until the tenancy comes to an end, whichever happens first.

Every person who, if a general vesting declaration were made in respect of all the land comprised in the order (other than land in respect of which notice to treat has been given), would be entitled to claim compensation in respect of any such land, is invited to give information to the authority making the declaration in the prescribed form with respect to his name and address and the land in question. The relevant prescribed form is set out below.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable filming to take place, intends to make an order the effect of which would be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

The Pink and Blues had raised fan hopes of promotion after a stirring semi-final victory over Bognor Regis Town last Thursday, but a listless showing from Hamlet in Essex ended hopes of promotion to the Conference South.

Conditions, a bobbly pitch and a gusty wind, played a part in so much as the home side dealt with them whilst the Champion Hill team seemed at a loss at how to get going at all.

By the time there was 35 minutes on the clock Dulwich were three goals behind, all coming courtesy of an inability to defend inswinging corners.

The first goal came after eleven minutes when a George Craddock delivery caused havoc in the visiting defence and found it’s way into the net.

Two subsequent set pieces were then bundled in by centre half Rickie Hayles leaving Hamlet with a mountain to climb they never looked likely to scale.

They briefly stirred two minutes after going three goals behind when Roman Michael-Percil was deemed to have been fouled in the box resulting in a Dulwich penalty.

Ashley Carew had his spot kick saved by home stopper Lucas Lidakevicius but Jordan Hibbert saved Carew’s blushes by expertly volleying in the rebound off the keeper.

Hamlet then upped the pace of the game and troubled the home defence and should have had a second penalty when Nyren Clunis was clearly fouled in the box.

That penalty didn’t come and neither did a second half onslaught from the visitors as Thurrock held them at arms length to secure promotion.

SHANE FERGUSON isn’t going to have much time off to recharge his batteries this summer – but after not playing a lot over recent seasons he’s not bothered about that.

The Northern Ireland international has made 48 appearances for Millwall this campaign, more than in his previous five seasons as a professional footballer combined.

With Ferguson’s goal against Oldham last weekend helping Millwall to the play-offs, his club season will be extended until at least May 19. Then, depending on whether they make the final at Wembley at the end of May, he will be dashing to either Austria for a training camp or to France to link up with his international colleagues to prepare for Euro 2016.

Northern Ireland’s tournament begins with a clash against Poland on June

12, with the final a month later on July 10 at the Stade de France in Paris. Then there is another trip back to England, where his girlfriend, Grace, is set to graduate with a business degree from Newcastle University.

If it seems a long shot that Ferguson will be playing competitive football all the way into July, then he doesn’t have far to look for evidence that the seemingly impossible can happen.

Tottenham’s draw at Chelsea on Monday night that handed a first-ever top-flight title to 5,000/1 outsiders Leicester meant one of Ferguson’s friends is an example of what can be achieved in football.

“I used to play with (Leicester defender) Danny Simpson at Newcastle,” Ferguson explained. “I got on really well with him. Once I broke into the team he helped me a lot, he’s a really nice person. I’m really happy for him.

“But I don’t think anyone would have seen Leicester doing that.

Ferguson scored the second goal, his third of the season, and said Neil Harris has been urging him to get into positions to add to his tally.

“There was a bit of pressure before the game but the manager didn’t put it onto us,” Ferguson said. “We stayed nice and calm, there was a lot to play for to make sure we got the play-offs. The lads played brilliantly

and getting the early goal was important.

“It never changes when you get a goal, it’s always the best feeling. I don’t get many of them but hopefully I’ll get a few more.

“The manager always jokes with me about getting in the box more and telling me I owe him a goal so it was nice to get one.”

Only Wigan and Peterborough have scored more league goals than Millwall this season. And with a defence that has conceded just one goal in their last seven games at home, the groundwork is there for a tilt at the Championship.

“Whenever we’re on our day we’re a very exciting team,” Ferguson explained. “We work a lot on that in training and you can see it paying off in matches.

“We all know our jobs. We do a lot on the training field in terms of team shape and we know our roles. We’d do anything for each other as well, we’re a really close team. We just want to try and be as successful as we can and hopefully we can do that this season.”

O’Brien scored ten goals between September and December, but then struggled for a starting place in the side after Harris signed Jed Wallace and Chris Taylor.

An injury to Lee Gregory has given him his chance to play up front recently, and though he regrets doubting himself when he was out of the team, he said his manager’s encouragement was crucial.

“I was scoring a lot and thinking, ‘This is what it’s all about, winning games for your team, for your manager and your supporters’,” O’Brien said.

“I was scoring winning goals, hat-tricks.

Scoring goals is what I dream about and then it kind of just faded out. And I was thinking, ‘Okay, that’s fine’, but a couple of games later I still hadn’t scored.

“So I kind of wondered what was going on. Now I think that was wrong of me because I shouldn’t have questioned my ability, I should have carried on playing with a smile on my face to get back my form.

“But the man-management from the gaffer was spot on. He kept saying, ‘Look at what you’ve done this season, class is permanent, form is temporary’. I kept that in my head and I knew he was right. I’m not going to be on form all the time, I’m going to have dips.

“As much as I can be on my game, that’s all I want to do, whether it’s working for the team, scoring goals, getting assists, defending, I just want to be part of a winning team and keep my place in it.”

O’Brien explained his father, David, is also a vital influence in shaping his career.

“My dad is a massive role model for me,” O’Brien said. “Anything I’m in doubt about on or off the pitch I turn to him and ask him his opinion, he’s always been honest with me. If I were to score two goals in a game at The Den but my ball retention, for example, was 20 per cent, he would tell me straight out that it wasn’t good enough.

“And I like that, I like criticism. I don’t think you can learn from people telling you you’ve done well every time when you haven’t. My dad is key to that.”

LEE GREGORY is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to Gillingham, Millwall’s last Sky Bet League One game this season.

The Lions confirmed their place in the play-offs with that win at The Den last weekend, and can end the Gills’ hopes of achieving a top-six finish on Sunday.

There was some tension as the players were leaving the field at full time when Oldham defender Anthony Gerrard claimed he had been struck by a Millwall fan, and the FA announced they would investigate the incident.

That was the only dark moment on a day when Jordan Archer was handed his player of the year prize by former heavyweight world champion David Haye and then kept his sixth clean sheet in his last seven games at The Den. Young player of the year Ben Thompson set the tone for Millwall’s domination of the contest by snapping into an early tackle on midfielder Liam Kelly.

And the ease of Millwall’s win was illustrated by the fact centreback Byron Webster came close

to snatching a hat-trick in the second half but lifted a closerange shot over the bar.

Maybe after Oldham had secured their League One status with a 1-0 win over Crewe the previous weekend, it was inevitable there would be a big drop-off in their performance level.

They had built their successful survival push on a the strength of a resurgent defence after they looked doomed when Millwall beat them 2-1 in January to leave them five points from safety.

Webster put the Lions ahead in straightforward fashion in the fifth minute when he nodded Chris Taylor’s corner past Joel Coleman. A little over twelve months ago Webster was in a Yeovil side rooted to the bottom of League One. Now he is a mainstay in a side three games away from achieving a return to the Championship.

Millwall had won only one of the other four games in which Webster had scored this season but it never looked like they would leave three points behind against an Oldham side that might already be thinking where to spend the summer holidays.

Webster scored his sixth of the season in even easier circumstances to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute. And it was again

Steve Morison showing his importance to the side, with his strength, vision and skill key to guiding Shane Ferguson’s freekick towards Webster, who headed in. With Lee Gregory out after surgery on a stomach muscle and still a doubt for the play-offs, Millwall will hope Morison, who has played 53 times this season, avoids injury between now and the end of the campaign.

Harris had mentioned in his match programme the contributions of Webster and Morison to Millwall’s climb up the table, and the current captain almost scored what would undoubtedly have been the goal of the season had a first-half effort from near halfway, after he had seen Coleman off his line, crept under the crossbar instead of over.

Joe Martin also clipped the woodwork after Mahlon Romeo had been fouled 25 yards out.

Morison never stops working and it was from another of his channel runs that Millwall doubled their lead five minutes before the break when he ran onto Romeo’s ball down the line. He looked up to find Aiden O’Brien running towards the near post and when his flick behind his standing leg didn’t find the target, Ferguson, starting after missing the last two games, took

advantage and swept home his third of the season at the back post. Harris has been teasing his wide players about their lack of goals recently, but that’s three in two games, as well as two assists, between the pair.

For all their dominance, the home side let their concentration lapse late on and Oldham should have scored twice to give their small travelling support something to cheer. First Jonathan Forte seemed to think he was offside before shooting straight at Archer from eight yards. Worse was to come when Latics substitute Dominic Poleon somehow fired over the bar in space just four yards from goal.

There was some disappointment when news came through that Burton had beaten Gillingham 21, meaning they and Walsall will fight for second on the last day.

But that barely dampened the mood as Millwall ended the regular league season with six successive home wins.

There was a lot of frustration among Millwall fans when it was announced there would be just over 1,000 tickets made available for the last League One game of the season at Gillingham.

But that will give over to excitement at the prospect of Millwall’s involvement in the play-offs.

A YEAR ago, Jordan Archer was preparing to depart Millwall without having made a senior appearance, with the club relegated to League One.

He was heading back to Tottenham Hotspur after his loan uncertain about his future, but fairly sure he didn’t have one at the Premier League club, where he had spent four years without ever really coming close to breaking into the first team.

Hugo Lloris, Heurelho Gomes and Brad Friedel were blocking his route at White Hart Lane and Archer’s experience of competitive football amounted to time on loan at Bishop’s Stortford and Wycombe.

The closest he got to the Spurs first team was in March 2013 when Andre Villas-Boas put him on the bench as understudy to Brad Friedel in a Premier League fixture at Swansea. Archer’s squad number that season was 57, a reminder of how far he was from making that a regular experience.

Coming up against players of the calibre of Harry Kane, Gareth Bale and Jermain Defoe in training helped hone Archer’s shot-stopping ability, and another loan spell at Northampton deepened the sense he need to get away to advance his career. “There were indications, Spurs hadn’t said anything about renewing anything,” Archer explained. “They’re a massive club with a lot of top goalkeepers, the France captain (Lloris) is there.

“I wasn’t under any illusions that I was going to get any game time anytime soon. That made it easier to make the decision to leave.

When I heard Millwall were interested in taking me permanently I was delighted.”

Archer witnessed Millwall’s decline last season from the bench, but he showed enough on the training pitch to convince Neil Harris he could have a future at the club.

When Harris decided to offer Archer a deal, he told the young goalkeeper he would be joining as number two to David Forde, who had won the club’s player of the year award in 2013-14.

At 22, Archer was getting close to the point where he had to make a first-team breakthrough

somewhere, but it was still a risk joining a League One side as a reserve to a goalkeeper who had been at Millwall for seven years and was an established international.

He knew he might have to wait a season before getting his chance, but nine months after making his competitive Lions debut he was voted the club’s player of the year for 2015-16.

And in the same week that Tottenham’s chances of claiming the Premier League title ended, Archer was helping Millwall ensure they have a chance of winning a trophy of their own after they confirmed their place in the League One play-offs.

Archer admits his chance to make an impact in the first XI came sooner than he had thought.

Millwall were a defensive mess in the early part of the season. Forde conceded eight goals in the first three league games and was dropped.

If Archer was nervous about being thrust into the side, with Harris still trying to figure out his best eleven, he didn’t show it and kept a clean sheet on his league debut at Scunthorpe.

Forde said earlier this season he let

Harris know he wasn’t happy with the decision, with the unavoidable perception he was being made a scapegoat.

But Archer said it never affected their professional or personal relationship, and praised his goalkeeping rival for his help this season.

“Obviously Fordey was established here but the manager said to come in, work hard and take it from there,” Archer said. “I’ve always backed my own ability so once the chance came I knew I had to go and perform.

“Fordey’s been outstanding and I can’t thank him enough. Often you see in football that it’s easy for another goalkeeper to be bitter and spiteful but it couldn’t be further the other way with Fordey.

“He has helped me massively on and off the field. He is always talking me through things, passing me on the benefit of his experience.

“He’s one of the funniest guys in the squad as well so us goalkeepers have a great laugh. It’s good that we can enjoy ourselves and have fun. It makes the day job a lot easier.”

competitive division after a summer of changes to the squad.

“League One is a tough league, as everyone has seen,” Archer said.

“We started off very slowly but as we adapted to it we went on a great run and haven’t lost many games recently.”

Archer will have added motivation at Gillingham this weekend. He was sent off against Justin Edinburgh’s side in December and Harris stuck with Forde until the veteran’s error against Oxford five games later let Archer back into the side.

But the 23-year-old prefers instead to focus on the team keeping their current good run of form going than on any notion of personal redemption.

“I think it’s important for us to keep up the momentum,” Archer said.

“Walsall can still slip up as well so we can still finish third.

“We’re going to go into this game looking for three points. It’s obviously more important for Gillingham because they’ve got to try and make their way into the play-offs.

“So we’re not going to go there and take it lightly, we’re going to go there for three points and carry on our run.”

MILLWALL WILL find out their play-off opponents after the last day of the 2015-16 season this Sunday.

Lions boss Neil Harris said his side were “hurt” when they lost to Gillingham at The Den in December.

Justin Edinburgh’s side were strong favourites to clinch promotion after that result, but Millwall can deny them a top-six place this weekend with a win or a draw.

Millwall know they will finish in the

play-off spots, and the final league positions in the table will determine whether they meet Bradford, Barnsley, Scunthorpe or the Gills in the semi-final.

Even though Millwall lost 3-0 to Gillingham last year, Harris saw signs to be encouraged by their performance that day.

“We’ve come a long way since then,” Harris said. “There were a lot of positives in that game. We played well until Jordan Archer got a red card and then they scored the penalty.

“After that we were fantastic, we were the better team with ten men.

That gave us a lot of confidence.

“It’s a local derby in this division.

There is a rivalry between the clubs and the fans because we’re close to each other. So we are conscious of that.

“It’s a game I’m excited about, we want to finish with real momentum.

“The result at The Den hurt us and we want to put that right.”

Millwall need to win at Priestfield Stadium to be in with a chance of finishing third in the table, and Shane Ferguson has been made aware by supporters how much a positive result in the fixture would mean to them.

because we obviously want to finish as high as possible,” Ferguson said.

“I was speaking to a lot of fans at the club’s awards dinner the other night and they were saying they really want to get one over on Gillingham.

“We know it’s like a derby as well and we’re really looking forward to it.

“Hopefully we can get the win because it wasn’t one of our best performances against them last time out and we want to make up for that.

“It just shows how far we’ve come since then. We didn’t get off to the best of starts but you can see how much we’ve improved as a team.”

Gregory, 27, underwent surgery on a stomach muscle tear two weeks ago and has missed the wins over Bury and Oldham.

The former Halifax Town striker may not be risked for this weekend’s clash at Gillingham, with Millwall already assured of a top-six finish.

The first leg of the play-off semi-final will take place either six or seven days after the clash at Priestfield, depending on where Millwall finish in the league.

Gregory has been struggling with his injury for a number of weeks, and Millwall finally decided he needed surgery after he went off at half-time in the 1-0 win over Fleetwood on April 19.

Gregory’s sixteen league goals this season have been crucial to Millwall securing a shot at a return to the Championship, with twelve of them coming in 2016 as the Lions have climbed from tenth to fourth in the League One table.

But manager Neil Harris is likely to give him the extra time to prove his fitness for the first leg of the play-offs on May 14 or 15.

“It’ll be unlikely he’ll be available for this weekend,” Harris admitted. “He’s on a road to recovery but he has a chance, we’ll leave it until the last minute before deciding.

“If he can train before that then that’s brilliant. If he can’t then we will look at having him back for the play-offs.”
