Super Sewer has to create a legacy for the river economy

T

IDEWAY’S COMMITMENT to use the Thames as the main means of transportation for the construction of the ‘Super Sewer’ is a good thing.

Local people were of course against Chambers Wharf being used as the base for the eastern section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel. The roads surrounding Chambers Wharf, most notably Tooley Street and Jamaica Road, are a living nightmare for commuters and motorists. The daily grid of tailbacks along these main roads is now commonplace and Jamaica Road has been cited as the slowest road in London. To add 4,000 workers with lorries working around the clock to clear debris from the tunnelling would surely bring the area to a halt.

Many local residents will be dreading 2018, when the work actual begins, but the fact that the Thames is being used over roads will bring some consolation. London is in need of the Super Sewer as we still rely mainly on a Victorian system for our untreated sewage. If, as a by-product of the £4.2 billion project, Tideway can help, in its own words “revitalise the river economy” then this will be a much needed and called for result. Since the closure of the docks in the 1970s, the Thames has been underused in an increasingly congested city.

The tunnelling will be taking place and there will be disruption for local resident, motorists and commuters, but as we work towards the construction date, it is vitally important that Tideaway works with local people to inform them and create new opportunities that will benefit them in the long run, as they take the hit for the rest of London.

When the works are finally finished at London Bridge the situation should be relieved, however, at Canada Water the future is not looking rosy as thousands more people are expected to arrive into the area as part of the Canada Water Masterplan. There should be a coordinated approach involving all our elected representatives, local groups and the commuting public to campaign for more buses, a bridge to Canary Wharf and a public ferry service to the north side of the river. These demands cannot be met over night, so it’s vital that we start working for these much needed services before even more workers and residents descend upon the peninsular.

Almost 100 office cabins to be brought by barge to Super Sewer site in Bermondsey over next 3 weeks

OFFICES WITH river views are the envy of many workers in London, but maybe none more than these - which are actually floating on the Thames.

Over the next three weeks almost 100 office units will be floating up the Thames to Chambers Wharf in Bermondsey to set up base for

construction of the eastern section of the Thames Tideway Tunnel.

The 96 cabins will float along for 22 nautical miles up the Thames from Tilbury as part of the biggest infrastructure project by the water industry, and also one of the most controversial.

Tideway’s delivery manager for the east section Jackie Roe said: “This is our first major delivery to Chambers Wharf and underlines our commitment to use the river to

transport as much as we can, so we can keep lorries off London’s road and help revitalise the river economy.”

Tideway has been set with the task of delivering the new 25km long sewerage tunnel to help tackle untreated sewage flowing into the Thames.

The scheme has not been without controversy, with tunnelling work due to start in 2018.

up to halt the project, with fears of constant noise, vibration and debris caused by huge boring machines running 24-hours a day.

Four thousand workers will descend along the route’s 24 construction sites which includes five shafts leading down to the tunnel.

Dubbed the ‘super-sewer’, the cost of the £4.2 billion project will be borne by residents with a surcharge rising to around £25.

The first set of units were delivered by local barge firm S Walsh on Monday, and a total of 60 cabins will be at the site by the end of the week.

Fewer units are expected to be delivered next week, with high tides hampering efforts.

Chambers Wharf, on the Bermondsey riverside, marks the starting point of the east section of the tunnel which will run to Stratford.

‘You would think it’s the 1970s’

A VAST pile of rubbish was cleared from a busy Peckham car park after a resident alerted Southwark Council through Twitter.

Dozens of rubbish bags were left at a recycling point in Choumert Grove car park near, Peckham Rye train station.

The resident posted the image to Twitter, brandishing the site as a “dump.”

They said: “I thought, for God’s sakes this is ridiculous. You would think it’s the 1970s. Hopefully Southwark Council will get their act together.”

of rubbish has never happened before, but said it came after the recycling bins were moved from one side of the car park to the other.

After the council was alerted to the issue the rubbish was soon cleared by Veolia, which collects Southwark’s rubbish and recycling.

Southwark Council said the site is cleared regularly, but the 120 space car park is being carefully monitored and steps are being taken to resolve the matter in the long term.

The Twitter user, who could see the rubbish from their bedroom window, said they were pleased with the swift response of the council via Twitter and clearance of the rubbish.

showing a strong response to the proton therapy he received in Oklahoma, USA, between December and February, paid for through fundraising by friends and readers of this paper.

His nan, Jackie Summerford, said: “It’s the news we have been longing for. The tumour has started to decrease after nine years of chemotherapy.

“Alfie has been in remission three times, and it’s come back before. Fingers crossed and touch wood this will have finally killed it for good.”

An MRI scan on July 20 revealed that the once golf-ball-sized tumour blocking his ventricles – a communicating network at the centre of the centre of the brain, with cavities filled with cerebrospinal fluid – had “popped”.

But this is the third time the youngster’s doctors have placed him in remission, and he still faces the up-hill climb from coping with aftermath of arduous cancer treatment.

Signs that something may have been wrong with little Alfie appeared back in 2006, when mum Kellie, 36, noticed her son habitually walking on his tip-toes.

He was diagnosed a year later at the Evelina with a thalamic tumour: known to affect sensations such as temperature, pain and touch. “I’ll never forget that day because, it was Valentine’s Day,” Kellie said.

Since then the NHS had tried everything. Even while carrying on at Walworth Academy, Alfie was put through three separate courses of chemotherapy and one round of oral chemotherapy. But in September he was ordered to rest at his home in the Aylesbury Estate.

Alfie said: “I was always just so tired, and in October I relapsed. I’m now getting GCSE books sent home for me.

“I spend a lot of time playing games

like Grand Theft Auto, Fifa and Call of Duty. That’s the only way mostly I have of hearing from my friends.”

His doctors’ next move was to refer Alfie referred for nine weeks of daily treatment at the ProCure Proton Therapy Centre in Oklahoma City (pictured above).

The proton therapy itself was “far more precise” than radiotherapy treatments available in the UK. “You have a mask strapped to your face and the treatment attacks the bad cells in my head but not the good ones,” Alfie said. “After that I would be so tired I would just go to my room and sleep.”

The family lived off the generous donations, and endured the volatile Midwestern winter weather.

Alfie had one scan in April, which was inconclusive, as the doctors could not tell whether his tumour had gone down.

Another idea was to insert a shunt into Alfie’s brain, to drain away the fluid from his tumour.

“I lived in fear. I just spend every day worrying: has this worked or hasn’t it?” said Kellie.

“Now we’ve had one bit of good news with Alfie and now we’re hoping to have a normal life again. Alfie has another scan coming in November, and he can start his GCSEs in September.

“There are so many people we want to thank for all the money raised to help us get there.”

POW PHOTOS BACK WITH FAMILY

LONG LOST family photos, once sent to comfort a WW2 soldier from Peckham imprisoned in a Nazi POW camp, have been reunited with their rightful owner.

The News reported last month that Sydenham man, Stefan Black, had approached the paper with old black and white snaps he discovered in a shop in Krakow, Poland while on holiday.

The photos showed the smiling faces of a doting family, and on the back they were addressed to a Charles Henry Ward, a prisoner in Stalag VIII-B, Lamsdorf (formerly part of Germany).

But what caught his interest was the sender’s address – from 14 Bird in Bush Road, Peckham.

With Stefan’s help, a story was published appealing for help to find the descendant of Charles Ward.

A fortnight later, Kate Ryan, a genealogist from Dartford, got in touch having read the story online, and told the News she found the identity of Charles Ward’s daughter: Jennifer Friend, now living near Maidstone.

We contacted Jennifer, 77, who explained everything. “The two soldiers standing side-by-side are my father, Charles, and possibly his brother Jack,” Jennifer said, “but everyone called him Nobby”.

“The lady and two children shown in another photo taken in the back garden of 14 Bird in Bush Road is of my aunt Ciss (Florence Montague) she was the wife of my dad’s half-brother James Montague, and the two children in the photo are Derek and Joan Montague.

“Aunt Ciss was the person who asked the Red Cross to locate the whereabouts of my dad. He had been reported missing in Crete on October 13, 1941.”

“What I know is that Charles was captured in Crete. He must have been taken him from there to the prisoner of war camp, which is now part of Poland.”

But after the war it appears Jennifer’s mother and father went their separate ways.

“My mother found some else,” she said. “She also had another child.

“It was really horrible after the war because my father hated my mother, and he took me away from her. The photos of my mother have her torn out.

It doesn’t make for happy reading.”

“But,” she says, “My uncle and my aunt were marvellous. They wanted to adopt me so that my father could try and start again after the war.”

Jennifer added that her father and her uncle were two of ten children.

Stefan told the News last month that he believed the photos had made their way to Jennifer’s father, Charles, thanks to an agreement Nazi’s had made with the Red Cross, which allowed prisoners to still receive letters from their loved ones at home.

“My uncle and my aunt were marvellous. They wanted to adopt me so that my father could try and start again after the war” “I was rather touched by it because she was sending him photos,” Stefan said.

“The Red Cross were the ones who organised for the prisoners of war to have post sent to them. But somehow they ended up in that shop where I found them,” Stefan said.

From exploring the public Forces War Records, you can find that Charles, whose service number was 219863, was stationed in Crete before he was captured and sent to Stalag VIII-B. Stefan, who works as an architect, said he also learnt that the camp was overrun by Soviet Russian forces in May 1945.

He said most of the British prisoners of war would have fled as the Soviets advanced, perhaps in such a hurry that Charles would have left the photos behind.

However, the military records show that he was formally reported missing on October 13, 1941.

There is also an unconfirmed note that Ward could have received a Star medal, which was awarded to all soldiers “if their service period was terminated by their death or disability due to service”. But thanks to Jennifer, we now know that Charles made it home safely.

PLANS FOR Southwark Council to roll out an automated switchboard to residents has raised fears after a pilot involving staff led to frustrated callers.

Figures released by the council last month show that only 40% of staff successfully managed to use the system, with just two in five callers getting through to the right person.

Opposition councillors have expressed fear over plans to extend the system in the summer, to save £421,000 from the council budget.

Southwark Liberal Democrat Finance and Performance spokesperson, councillor Hamish McCallum said: “Labour’s ruling councillors must not create a ‘digital divide’ in Southwark where access to council services depends on you feeling comfortable using automated systems while everyone else either has to hang on or just hang up.”

The figures showed 68% of callers had to wait for an operator because the software did not recognise what they were saying.

A council spokesperson said: “We tested the system with staff so that we could identify problems and correct them before residents started to use it.

“We’ve had just one complaint from a resident about an issue we then resolved, and we’re pleased with the system so far, although we will continue to tweak and improve it over time.”

accents, however the council said the software continually learns to recognise more accents as it is used and they expect the success rate to rise to 80% after a few months.

The council cabinet agreed on a wider Digital Strategy in February which will move more services online. Liberal Democrat councillors have received complaints from

residents that the existing switchboard refers them online, despite the council finding 8% of residents have no home internet.

The Digital Strategy warned that the

over 60s, disabled people, council tenants, unemployed residents and those in low-paid jobs are all less likely to have internet access or confidence online.

CANADA WATER and London Bridge tube stations were among the top ten most closed due to overcrowding from 2014 to 2016, according to Transport for London figures.

A freedom of information request made the The Evening Standard revealed that in the period from March 2014 to February 2016, London Bridge had to shut 26 times, and Canada Water 25 times.

Councillor Dan Whitehead, Liberal Democrat councillor for Surrey Docks, said: "The survey results back up what many local residents have been saying for years. The overcrowding at Canada Water during peak hours is getting increasingly serious.

“Before thousands of new homes are approved by the Council in the area, we need practical solutions to the transport issues that Rotherhithe faces. This includes more buses, a bridge to Canary

Wharf and a public ferry service to the north side of the river. If the council doesn’t ensure these projects become a reality soon, the Jubilee Line will come close to collapse.”

British Land is currently proposing to build office space and homes in Canada Water as part of the Canada Water Masterplan, potentially bringing thousands more people to the area.

A TfL spokesperson said: "Record numbers of people are using the Tube, with over 1.3bn passenger journeys last year. London’s success-driven growth means the city’s population is expected to grow from 8.6 million now to 10 million by 2030.

"We have consistently argued that this means that sustained investment needs to be put into modernising and expanding the transport network.

“That is why we have one of the biggest investment programmes in the world. The TfL-run Elizabeth line, which will open in 2018, will serve

Cycle to Rio from Southwark

ELEPHANT & CASTLE: Olympic fever hit Southwark on Friday as one councillor kicked off the ‘Road to Rio’ challenge by cycling 10km at the Castle Centre.

The council challenged residents to run, cycle, swim or row the distance over the weekend, as part of the launch of a free swim and gym programme.

Cabinet member for Public Health, Parks and leisure, Councillor Maisie Anderson (pictured) took up the challenge and cycled the distance from Southwark to Rio. The scheme gives residents free access to swimming pools and gyms at leisure centres, all day on Fridays, and from 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.

FISHER FC played their first match back home last weekend after twelve years in Dulwich, thrashing Farnborough OBG 4-0.

More than 100 fans turned out to support the team and see the new stadium on Salter Road, Rotherhithe, chanting “we’re back in Bermondsey” and debating what each side of the pitch should be called.

The brand new stadium, which features a 3G pitch and clubhouse, only experienced a minor teething issue when the turnstile’s key was misplaced.

Dan Feeney, a Fisher FC Board Member, said: “It’s difficult to put into words, it’s an amazing feeling to see football back in the area. People have worked really hard and a lot of people

really care about Fisher.

“Everyone connected with the club is happy that we have finally managed it – we are finally home! To see eleven people in Fisher kit on the pitch, to see people finally here is a really good feeling.”

Joe Arif, a community member, said: “I’ve been with the club for 30 years.

My uncle used to be a manager! I don’t think them being back has quite sunk in yet. I keep feeling we are playing away.

“I’ve been waiting twelve years for this and I never thought it would happen. To see it is just unbelievable.

I just hope the community will enjoy it and get involved.

“We have put our pride and soul into it but the battle isn’t over. As a club we are getting back on our feet. We are only as strong as our membership.”

GOOGLE PLUS users are well used to leaving pithy, often very negative reviews of restaurants and various venues on the search engine’s social media platform.

But now it seems an anonymous police cell pundit has been bringing the capital’s police stations to bear, including the one on Peckham High Street.

Going by the name Moon Bean, the satisfied author wrote of his short stay at

Peckham Police Station: “OMG had the best time here!

“Such a comfy blue plastic matress they give you to lye on, bet it hadn’t been wiped down since the last occupier, but its fine, sharing is caring!”

He added: “10/10 for décor, amazing views! Hope to be back soon,” also adding “Kisses xxxxxxx” for the hospitable bobbies at the station.

It appears Moon Bean has also left reviews of police stations in Brixton and Tottenham. “Had an amazing stay here,” they said of Lambeth station, “especially liked the stiff blue mattress with holes in it can’t wait to be back.”

A TRENDY new foodie destination opened in Elephant and Castle last week with scenes of dancing, jazz, and an array of hard-to-find, healthy ingredients from across the Mediterranean

The Mercato Metropolitano in Newington Causeway, had a soft opening on Thursday, overseen by food-obsessed entrepreneur, Andrea Rasca.

Andrea, who curated all of the stalls and independent food merchants ranged around the food hall, said: “Look at this.

We’re only 50 per cent open, this is only the audition, but it’s already go, go, go.

“The full opening is going to be on September 15 with a new gym and a cinema. This is just us giving the people a little sample, and they are loving it.

“I invited the band and all the dancers here because this isn’t just a place where people should come and buy food.

Markets are about social cohesion and people socialising.”

Andrea, 49, is a significant shareholder in the Eataly chain of food halls, which can be found dotted around the globe in Sao Paulo, Turin, New York, Rome and Tokyo.

The market includes a bakery, fishmonger, pasta maker, wine merchant and butcher, as well as stalls with delicacies from India and English classics.

ix and a half years into the demands of being Leader of Southwark Council, with his party at war nationally and the prospect of continued funding battles with a Conservative government in austerity-era Britain, Peter John could be forgiven for the odd moment spent dreaming of a quieter life. Yet he insists this is far from the case. “It’s business as usual”, he maintains, when sitting down this week to talk to the News. “I believe we’ve achieved a lot since 2010, but I still feel there’s so much more I want to do. If I’m re-selected then I’ll be standing again in 2018 and we’ll be looking to maintain and build on what we did at the last elections.

I’m not done yet.”

At a time when at a national level the Labour party are in disarray, with a revolt over a leader barely ten months into the job triggering an outright challenge and with fears of a split in the party – paradoxically perhaps, John can argue that Labour in Southwark is stronger and more united than it has been for many a year. Having seen off a Tory/Lib Dem coalition to win power in a neat inversion of what was unfolding in Parliament in 2010, he has since won a more convincing mandate locally, with 48 of his party securing council seats out of 63 in total. This was followed up by a longed-for clean sweep of the borough’s parliamentary seats – add in a new Labour London Mayor and GLA member for Southwark & Lambeth – local party politics seemingly couldn’t be further removed from the chaotic scenes on the national stage.

Not that he isn’t casting a worried eye over national affairs in his party, with his frustration that the Labour party gives scant thought to local government when it looks towards the future. “It’s ironic”, he continues. “At present it’s only really in local government where Labour is actually in power, but the Parliamentary Labour Party just seems interested in a debate about national politics. It forgets that half the country has Labour in local

government and if they’re anything like Southwark, they’ll be defending people from the worst excesses of what’s happening nationally and defending Labour values.”

Yet what exactly are Labour values – and isn’t that precisely what the party at a national level is scrabbling about trying to work out? Does he believe that current leader Jeremy Corbyn represents a return to true Labour values over the years of Blairism, even if that might mean years in the wilderness of opposition? Or is anyone but Corbyn an improvement?

“You can ask whether the Blair government was too pragmatic and too centrist. But don’t forget that back in 1997 we hadn’t had a Labour government for eighteen years. There was always the possibility that we’d drop everything, lose it on election day, frighten people as [former party leader] Neil Kinnock did. People now query whether Corbyn has actual policies that he wants to deliver. And ask any member of the Southwark Labour group – being in power is so much better than being in opposition because you can effect change. I still think what we’re doing represents good Labour values – investing in homes, free and healthy school meals, last week launching our free gym and swim campaign. I’d very happily be prepared to defend what we’re doing as the best of Labour values.”

Surprisingly though, and whilst admitting that he’ll be voting for the other candidate, Owen Smith, John believes that the challenge to Corbyn’s leadership came too soon. “The party have embarked on this assault on his leadership without having a strategy for what will happen next. They hoped he would just go, but he didn’t, and nobody has a view about where it will end satisfactorily for the party. The problem for us is that what goes on nationally affects what we’re doing locally – we’re already hearing it on the doorstep.

“I do think that Corbyn should have been given a greater chance to prove himself. In London we now have a Labour Mayor and we’ve won local by-elections. There’s nothing I can see that says Corbyn has failed as a leader in terms of our results. I won’t be supporting him in the leadership

election. But I wouldn’t be here, having this challenge, in the first place.”

So how can it be business as usual if there’s a chance that Labour could split in the autumn, regardless of who wins the leadership battle? How to provide good governance when half your party is in revolt? “I hope we don’t get there.

There’s one thing having a vote of no confidence in your leader. It’s a completely different thing for those 200 odd MPs to form their own party.

Can you imagine someone like Harriet Harman leaving the party?”

Yet what about Bermondsey MP Neil Coyle – who despite proposing Corbyn as leader was one of the very first to call for him to go? “I’m not even sure he’d do it. I think you might get twenty or thirty MPs at most. I hope there won’t be a split, but if there is, we’ll manage it at a local level.”

Selection of party candidates, with the sudden influx of new Labour members and impact of pressure group Momentum, could prove interesting.

He talks with passion about what he believes Labour should be championing across the country – how it should be his party leading the way on devolution with the northern powerhouses, and arguing for the benefits of immigration before and indeed after the Brexit vote. “I’m not sure we should be trying to out-UKIP UKIP. If we believe that immigration is a good thing, then we have to go out and say we believe in it and this is why. If you’re worried about housing, education, infrastructure, it’s about investing in it so that your fears are not well-founded.”

The key for John is the housing crisis – particularly acute in the capital - and he accuses the government of being ‘desperately flat-footed’ about it. “You have to have government investment – the private sector will never deliver enough. London has built something like 25,000 – 30,000 homes each year for the past 25 to 30 years. It’s not enough.

“I don’t believe limiting immigration is the answer either. The strain of the city growing is a manifestation of that open border policy, so there are consequences. But the way you respond is to build homes. School places we’re dealing

And the jobs are there – last year Southwark’s employment rate was the highest in a decade or more.” He champions the argument that a larger population means a larger economy, although when pressed, concedes that an increase in gross domestic product doesn’t necessarily lead to an increase in the average family income, or reduced child poverty, for example.

Yet still he maintains that if you provide the investment, much of the heat over immigration will dissipate.

“And what I love about London is its vibrancy, how it’s a melting pot – and I think many people feel that way. Do we really want to lose that?”

Newly elected Mayor Sadiq Khan has taken up the London Finance Commission launched by his predecessor Boris Johnson, and John is hopeful that its report will be taken seriously by the government – looking at devolving council tax, business rates and critically, stamp duty. “We need as a country to rebalance the economy away from London,” he argues. “Yet it remains true that in order for the UK to prosper, London needs to prosper. We raise about 7% of London’s investment, whereas other world cities have much higher levels.

So at the moment we’re competing with the government, with ridiculous

controls being put on local authorities.” He uses the three-yearold Southwark Housing Commission as an example: “We set out a thirty year plan for our social housing supply. That is all put at risk by the government’s Housing and Planning Act 2016. We’re funding the government’s national housing association right to buy policy – how is that sensible where we have a thirty year strategy in place locally?

“I’ll give you another example - we had a commitment in our manifesto about rent rises – inflation plus one per cent. But [former Chancellor] George Osbourne declared last year that social rents had to decrease by one per cent per annum between 2016 and 2020.

That has created a hole in our housing revenue account forecasting, so there’ll be delays in our kitchen and bathroom extension programme. The point is, there’s always this tension. If you had some big national house building programme it would be different. As things stand, we expect the new regulations in September and October and we’ll be as creative as possible with dealing with it, as we always are.” (In a heated aside about the News reporting on £15,000 spent on a redesign of the council logo, he insists the council has been imaginative and innovative in its

budgeting and use of resources.)

With 350 new council homes due for completion by the end of October, and 1500 promised by 2018, John believes Southwark is leading the way in tackling the housing crisis – against a prevailing wind. And yet, speak to some of those decanted around the Heygate at Elephant & Castle and they might not share his enthusiasm – has his administration succeeded in reassuring people about largescale regeneration projects?

“I think we have learned lessons.

But with the Heygate, many people were happy to move and we just didn’t capture their story. Then you’re left with a few who aren’t happy and become self-appointed spokespeople for the whole decant process. So suddenly there’s this narrative that it’s all terrible. But there has been a distinct change from the Heygate to the Aylesbury Estate. Leaseholders can carry the value of their equity into their new property – they’re not being penalised. It’s one of the important lessons we’ve learnt.” With sizeable regeneration projects at Canada Water and on the Old Kent Road taking shape, there’s still plenty to be concentrating on – “we need to get them both right. We want people to be comfortable and confident with what’s being proposed.”

With his fiftieth birthday approaching, and after years of speculation as to whether he would seek to become an MP, John revealed to the News in this interview that he had now ruled this out conclusively.

“The idea has interested me in the past, but I think that door has closed now. I am ambitious, but more for what we are trying to achieve here in Southwark.”

He seems quite content to be overseeing the rebuilding of what Labour have always felt was one of their traditional strongholds. Other than his ambitious council housing target, he is chairing a central London review into further education, with an eye on how to improve what’s on offer for young adults in Southwark. And whilst the latest employment figures showed three quarters of adults in work, he asks: “Why can’t we notionally be a full employment borough?” The newly launched free gym and swim campaign and free school meals are, in his eyes, echoes of the kind of policies championed by Bermondsey’s pioneering Labour MP and social reformer, Dr. Alfred Salter.

“We’re getting there… but we’re not quite there yet”, he concedes. “What I would argue is that, in an era when politicians are told they don’t deliver on their promises – we are delivering.”

106-year-old Peckham girl was thrown a touching birthday party on Tuesday, and received a hand written card from Her Majesty the Queen.

It was smiles all around for Winnifred Williams, as she celebrated the momentous achievement in the company of friends and carers at the Greenhive home in Brayards Road.

Although unable to say too much herself, Winnie told the News: “[I’m having a] very good time, thank you.”

Stories were told of her life and times and Winnie’s best friend, Grace Watson, said: “I met Winnie 35 years ago when I was working in another care home in Sumner Road before she moved to Greenhive in 2002.

“She always said ‘you must come and visit, you must come and visit,’ so I have done every year.”

Although hugely popular at the

care home, Winnie has no known relatives, and was an only child.

She was born in 1910 – the year before George V was crowned King – and she attended Rockingham Road Elementary School in New Kent Road.

“She once worked as a nurse in Leytonstone,” said Grace, who also grew up in Peckham and now lives in Orpington.

“Winnie loves music and has hundreds of vinyl records and CDs, and she was a great dancer. Her favourite artists are Aled Jones,

Anne Shelton and Doris Day. “When I first looked after her she was a very big reader, and would love writing letters to people.”

Also at the party was deputy mayor of Southwark, councillor Charlie Smith, and entertainment was provided by a live band, who had residents up on their feet singing and dancing.

THE SMOKERS of Herne Hill demand a general election. That’s according to the irrefutable polling of an ashtray Ballot Bin, which appeared at the railway station four weeks ago.

After the EU referendum turned Britain’s political system upside down, Giles Gibson, chair of the Herne Hill Forum, decided the people needed something light-hearted yet topical.

So on July 7 he erected this Ballot Bin - where smokers could discard their butts in a side to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ - and by August 1, the question: “Should there be a general election in 2016” had been given a resounding “Yes”.

Giles told the News: “It seems to be a land slide. This was a way to highlight the issue, and it was quite fun.

“It turns out Herne Hill was the local area which voted most heavily in favoring of staying in the EU, and we’re in Lambeth, the area of England that was also most in favour. You could probably claim that Herne Hill is the most pro-EU place in the UK.” Now Giles has the idea of making another one, only he has yet to decide on a question.

“I think it needs to be on some kind of issue, maybe it could be ‘is smoking bad for your health?’

“It doesn’t necessarily need to be political, but we do want to keep it interesting. Then again, maybe it should ask whether people would rather have Theresa May or Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister?

“Maybe we will get non-smokers to think of ideas for a question to ask the local smokers?”

The bin itself, was designed by a charity called the Hubbub Foundation, whose environmental campaign, Neat Streets, aims to find innovative ways to reduce litter.

Paralysed woman does own race after being told disabled can’t compete

A PARALYSED Peckham woman has spoken of her gratitude to everyone who sponsored her almostfoiled 10km wheelchair race in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Thirty-four-year-old Sau Tran of Old Kent Road, left for her mini-marathon in the state in April 10 with the help of her childhood friend.

Despite assurances from her touring company who helped book her place in

the international event, Sau said she was heartbroken when she arrived and heard that race officials had decided she could not take part, because of her disability.

Sau told the News: “I chose to go to North Korea because I had travelled all around Asia with a friend, and we promised each other we would go.

“But the committee running the event wouldn’t allow me. They had been deciding before I arrived, but couldn't inform me in time as there is no internet and scarcely any communication to the

outside world in North Korea. When I found out, I actually cried.”

Sau suffered her paralysis after a road collision on her bike in 2013, whilst training for a London-to-Paris cycle ride.

“I didn't even cry when doctors told me I’d never walk again. I had never been told I couldn't take part in something – just because I was disabled,” she said.

But the disappointment didn’t stop the Peckham-born woman from taking on her own race. Using a guide, she took on her own, rough 10km track along random

roads in the mysterious state’s capital.

She said: “I wasn't going to sit back and feel sorry for myself and I wanted to do it and let people know I was grateful for their support.”

Her endeavours raised nearly £3,000 for the specialist charity Back Up – for people with spinal disabilities – who supported Sau since her accident to help her into a career as a wheelchair services manager.

A WALWORTH boozer with over 160 years of history will reopen today with the aim of repositioning itself as a pub for the people.

The Huntsman and Hounds closed in 2014, but has been given a new lease of life thanks to a Bromley-based family pub businesses and the Walworth Society.

Like many pubs of the past, The Huntsman in Elsted Street was sold for redevelopment into flats. But a strong local campaign convinced its developer to retain its newly-refurbished ground floor.

John Whelan of the Walworth Society took a guided a tour of the East Street area’s history for a sneak peek of The Huntsman on July 23. He told the News: “There’s going to be a lot of old photos on the walls of the costermongers [market traders] from East Street.

“It was a strong focal point for the East Street traders and the pub would be a place for wedding receptions and socialising between them.

“The pub was famous for its darts as well. There were five teams that practiced there and two darts boards.

“It was also a place for kids and dads to meet before going for a Beano – the old word for going on a day out to the beach, or to the horse racing or the dogs. The kids would come from far and wide and the people at the pub would chuck them a few bob before they left.

“The current site was laid out between 1850 and 1876, but it changed shape in that time, there was a stables at one point.

It also had a forbearer of the same name in the old Walworth Common.”

John, 44, a theatre director by trade, said the Walworth Society campaigned to get the pub recognised as a community asset.

“For a lot of people, this pub was the community’s lynch pin. To a lot of people it was really horrific to watch it close. It

was a real social network.”

In its recent past the Huntsman would have been a place for old widows to come and have Christmas dinner together, and the locals would make sure they get walked home safely in the cold.

In its latest incarnation, the Huntsman promises to offer real ales and be a place that employs local people.

Peter Birdsall, whose family businesses have taken The Huntsman’s reins, said: “I

went along to the Walworth Society’s meetings and we were really interested to hear they wanted a family pub, so we convinced the landlord to let us have a lease for a few years.

“Being a freehouse means we can have a different selection of craft beers and ales. We will have speciality gins and vodkas and interesting teas and coffees.

“We will also have a book exchange and keep some board games too.”

What’s on the RISE in Waterloo?

ANYONE WHO has passed by Waterloo’s Millennium Green – opposite the Old Vic – in the last week, could not help but be perplexed by a huge structure being created in the park and wonder what hell is being built there.

The answer is the mother of all pop-up

theatres.

Teaming up with Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST), the Old Vic is staging a three-storey theatre production featuring 200 Londoners with actors, a choir, a band, dancers and a team of backstage hands to put on a show written especially for the purpose-built venue.

RISE by Deirdre Kinahan, and directed

by Alexander Ferris will be running from next Wednesday August 10 until Sunday

August 21 and is free, although tickets are already being snatched up. The play, written after many months of workshops with people across London, explores - in the words of the Old Vic - “the impact of living in a city where the temperature is rising.”

As the theme of the show is the environment, the famous Waterloo theatre has pulled out all the stops by building as much of the structure as

possible from reused and recycled materials. It has enlisted architecture and design studio Collective Works, which recently cowdfunded for a pavilion for an Islington nursery, and was behind a new townhouse built just yards down the road from the latest project at the Elephant & Castle.

TWENTY TRAINEES from Bermondsey’s Construction Youth Trust’s Budding Builders course graduated last week, in preparation for employment in the construction industry.

Having completed multi-skilled courses in the construction trades, the students aged between 16–26 years were awarded their certificates by the Deputy Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Charlie Smith.

Speakers at the event included Christine Townley, Executive Director of Construction Youth Trust, Tony O’Reilly, Director of Construction and Development for Grosvenor, and Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle.

The centre was recently refurbished with the support of Willmott Dixon Interiors, and the graduation ceremony was the first chance to see the newlook training centre.

Having opened in April 2015, the Trust aims to support young people in Southwark and across London to access training, education and employment opportunities in the construction industry.

The training centre offers OCN accredited multi-skilled and tradefocused courses with an opportunity to complete Level One Health and Safety in Construction.

This interactive project around the popup theatre is from Flying Objects, whose recent projects include Tate Sensorum, IK Prize winning multi-sensory experience for Tate Britain, the A-Z of YouTube, an animated celebration to mark the site's 10th birthday, and Mix the City, a web based interactive music site for the British Council.

The ten performances are from The Old Vic Community Company that was formed in 2013. The cast are made up from previous members of the company that have put on other plays plus more emerging talent, picked from over one thousand people who auditioned earlier in the year.

The Old Vic have been able to stage such a huge show free of charge through funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies and trusts and foundations.

THE FORMER MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark for 32 years, Sir Simon Hughes, has called for the Liberal Democrats to be “bold like the SNP” if they are to win a snap General Election.

Speaking to the News after being formally appointed the Lib Dem’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, in the event of the new Prime Minister, Theresa May, calling an early vote, Sir Simon said the Lib Dems had “overcompensated for the Tories”.

Speaking about the last general

election, he said: “Labour won it in the last ten days saying “if you vote Lib Dem you would get another coalition”, but what happened is that they voted Labour and just got the Tories.”

“If we had been making bold points in the last election, showing people what you will get if you vote liberal we would have done better. The SNP did it brilliantly. If you want liberalism, if you don’t want ID cards or a big brother state, then vote liberal,” he added.

Asked whether he regretted the decision to join the Conservatives in power, he said: “We made the right decision but regret some of the decisions made. More and more people have stopped me saying they now

realised how valuable we were in [Government], though.”

Building on the hope that May will dissolve Parliament at the beginning of 2017, Sir Simon outlined the need for an MP to be tough with Southwark Council, as well as London Mayor Sadiq Khan, to deliver on local issues.

He said: “There’s a huge issue surrounding transport. The Mayor, Boris Johnson and Sadiq Khan, have

not been gripping the nettle. We need to get them to understand the urgency of the issue.

“There’s no need for the Garden Bridge but there is a real need for a bridge from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf.

“Traffic congestion is another point.

All the roads that feed to Tower Bridge are clogged. All the roads should have warning signs about when the bridge

will be raised, to give people more indication. It’s about doing these practical things.

“The biggest issue that remains is affordable housing. Labour have been really, really dreadful. There are a number of families that don’t have adequate housing and that is unacceptable. We need homes for the community here. Sadiq needs to show that he can be tougher on that.”

Smoking will not be permitted anywhere on the university campus or Guy’s Hospital site. E-cigarettes will be permitted outdoors on the university campus but will continue to be banned on the hospital site.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ banned smoking on its hospital and community premises and grounds in June 2015.

Prince Harry visited Burrell Street Sexual Health Centre

PRINCE HARRY took a rapid HIV test at Burrell Street Sexual Health Centre on 14 July to encourage people to get tested.

It was broadcast live on the Royal Family’s Facebook page as part of his work to focus the minds of his generation on the fight against HIV and AIDS. Robert Palmer, lead health advisor and psychosexual counsellor at Comfort Momoh

Burrell Street, which is part of Guy’s and St Thomas’, carried out Prince Harry’s rapid HIV test which took less than a minute.

He says: “It’s really important for someone like Prince Harry to have an HIV test because it normalises the testing process. It lets everyone know that it’s a simple test, it doesn’t take long, and that it’s important to know your HIV status.

“If Prince Harry can come along and let it be known that a royal can have an HIV test, then everyone can have an HIV test.”

Burrell Street prides itself on using innovative methods to encourage more people to get tested in an area of London with the highest rate of HIV positive patients in the UK. HIV rates in the UK continue to rise despite years of progress in

treating the illness. One of the biggest factors is that up to 17% of HIV positive patients are unaware of their status and so can unintentionally pass on the virus to partners.

Worldwide as many as 17 million people are unaware that they have HIV. Late diagnosis also means people don’t get early treatment to enable them to lead healthy lives.

FGM midwife honoured

A PIONEERING midwife who cares for victims of Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), and has campaigned tirelessly to eradicate the practice in the UK for more than 25 years, has received a national honour for her services.

Dr Comfort Momoh MBE, FGM and public health specialist at Guy’s and St Thomas’, was awarded a Fellowship by the Royal College of Midwives

(RCM). She is the first FGM specialist to be given this honour.

Comfort, who established an FGM clinic at Guy’s Hospital in 1997, says: “It is an honour to be awarded one of the first ever Fellowships by the Royal College of Midwifery. Collaboration and empowerment is the key to changing and saving lives. With the support of organisations like the RCM, together, one day, we will see an end to FGM.”

A HEROIC Scottish tourist has been praised by RNLI lifeboat crew, after she helped save a woman seconds away from drowning in the Thames near Bankside Pier.

The drama unfolded on Monday last week when London Coastguard called the Tower lifeboat crew after reports a woman was in the river near Shakespeare’s Globe theatre.

The crew rushed to the scene where they found a member of the public gripping the hand of a woman in the water. With the casualty in one hand, she herself was being assisted by an employee of London’s Thames RIB

The would-be rescuer, Scottish holidaymaker Natalie Harrison, was keeping the casualty afloat, stopping her from drifting away in the dangerous tidal flow of the Thames.

Steve King, full time lifeboat helmsman at Tower RNLI lifeboat station, said if it were not for her actions, the lady in the river may not have survived, and described what she did as “a risky, but utterly selfless and incredible act of public service”.

Steve said: "As they came into sight we saw this blonde haired figure hanging over the safety barrier and holding onto the woman in the water. I had to squeeze our lifeboat into a very small gap and it

SOUTHWARK: The former chair of Southwark’s UKIP branch has announced her bid to replace Nigel Farage as the party’s next leader.

Elizabeth Jones, who is also the current deputy chair of UKIP in Lambeth, announced her bid on July 28, after Mr Farage vacated his seat after the referendum result.

Ms Jones works as a family-law solicitor, and is a member of UKIP’s ruling National Executive Committee.

"We got in close and one of the staff from the Thames RIB experience boarded the lifeboat to help us pull the woman from the river. If it wasn’t for Natalie’s heroic efforts she may have already gone under and we might not have been able to save her."

The woman in the water, estimated to be in her late 20 or early 30s, was conscious and was breathing when she was pulled onto the lifeboat, but was "wet, cold, and distressed".

Steve added: "Whilst en-route back to our station near Waterloo Bridge we requested an ambulance meet us there.

The woman was assessed and, when we arrived, taken into the casualty care room

until the London Ambulance Service and Marine Police could look after her.

"As a general rule, the RNLI doesn’t encourage what Natalie did – if people enter the river or sea to try to rescue others they risk getting into difficulty themselves, which exacerbates the rescue situation for emergency services.

We normally advise people to raise the alarm and call the Coastguard.

"That said, there’s no denying what she did was utterly selfless, an incredible act of public service. I believe she was on holiday in London and was nearby when she saw the woman in the water, and acted immediately to help. The woman in the river was vulnerable and me and my fellow lifeboat crew members feel Natalie’s brave actions may well have saved that woman’s life."

Two in hospital after car smash

PECKHAM: Two men were taken to hospital after a head-on smash between two silver saloons in Old Kent Road.

Police confirmed the crash happened at about 9.40pm on July 27, at the junction with Peckham Park Road.

One of the drivers, thought to be eighteen or nineteen years old, was taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

The London Fire Brigade were also called to clear a large amount of oil that had spilled into the road from both cars.

The road was reopened at 11.40pm. The second driver was also taken to hospital as a precaution.

We need a summer of calm on our streets

A

S A borough, Southwark can be proud of how we, as a community, pull together to prevent crime on our streets.

We have a tradition of strong partnership work between the Southwark Police, Southwark Council and other agencies, including the Mayor, involved in the Safer Southwark Partnership all working together to make our borough safer.

There are two areas of crime, however, which continue to hit the headlines and continue to cause us a great deal of concern. These are violent youth crime and gun offences. The recent violent clashes between the police and a group of young people on Burgess Park resulting in two young people being stabbed and the two separate shooting incidents in one week in Camberwell are all very worrying.

The surge in offences as we approach the summer months is always a concern for the police and the community.

The Mayor and City Hall have a role to play in working with boroughs like Southwark to help form the right partnerships to address this area of crime.

The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) will be drawing up the new police and crime plan strategy that will set out the Met’s strategy for how the police will be working, with clear targets to help prevent crime across London.

The Police and Crime Committee at the Assembly will be feeding into this plan and I am keen to ensure that the priorities and suggestions for improving crime on our streets across Southwark are fed into this.

Over the next few weeks I am hoping to meet up with the new Borough Commander to hear his priorities for his officers in Southwark. I will also be attending the different Southwark Community Council meetings later in the year and writing to community groups working with young people about how they can feed into the plan. Southwark residents will be consulted on the plan and it is important to get as many people as possible to attend to the consultation meetings. I know from my work with young people and ex-gang members that there is no ‘one-size fits all’ solution to addressing youth crime and I will be pushing for a focus on outreach work with community groups close to the communities affected.

The stark reality is that the Metropolitan Police continues to face financial challenges and they will be required to make considerable changes over the next few years. We have already lost over 100 police officers from the streets of Southwark and any additional reduction will risk undermining the fight against crime and keeping our streets safe.

Local residents campaigning to keep the Odessa Street Red Crane

We must keep our heritage

I AM writing to comment on your recent article re the Odessa Street Red Crane.

I understand you have to give both sides of the story, but this must mean the whole story, not 'soundbites' that distort the truth.

I refer to two points in particular, the first regarding the Red Crane itself.

They [Hollybrook] say it is a 'Health and Safety Hazard' but if this was so, the council would (and should) have acted long before now to correct the situation, regardless of the availability of funds, as peoples lives would have been at stake!

As for the 'viability' of saving it, it is the last Crane of it's type in London and MUST be saved another smack in the face of our forefathers who made the area what it is today - a community that cares for each other.

Secondly, their convenient

deflection of the loss of a FREE playspace for local children, citing that there are facilities available at the Docklands Settlement - at £50 per hour!!

There is an ongoing issue with childhood obesity, and yet we are to accept that a play area that helps to keep our children healthy can be taken away for profit - I don't think so!!

I understand the need for new social housing, but we must keep our heritage as well.

As I know from my experiences as a local resident, worker in the voluntary sector and councillor consultation is a very challenging process.

Capturing the very diverse views of existing residents, businesses as well as commuters from further afield and turning them into a coherent vision for a future which is many years away is very difficult.

Short term political and economic considerations often prevail alongside the selfish (what can I get out of it for me) views.

Expert officers and elected members rarely get the process correct and sadly Southwark Council is no exception in this instance.

What has been going on these past months has not been consultation but a series of meetings at which people have been informed of what is required and what has to be done according to a pre-determined and halfbaked ‘vision’ of the future. What consultation should involve is engaging as many people as possible, listening carefully to their hopes and ideas and then giving clear and straightforward feedback on what might – or might not - be done. It involves building trust and mutuality – doing things with rather than to people.

I suggest an alternative option to the one being promoted by the Council.

That there are no tube stations built on the Old Kent Road and that a cheaper tram route and improved bus services are explored, that the area is not designated as a part of Central London, that 5000 new homes – all Council – are built (we have enough of the other unaffordable ones in the area already), that the needs and potential of existing businesses are clarified and built

upon (it was clear from a recent meeting that many had not been contacted), that there is an urgent audit of open spaces and heritage and community assets. The Council needs to build on the people assets that already exist rather than create blight and uncertainty.

I accept this is challenging but we clearly live in uncertain economic and political times and I am hopeful that alternative ways of doing economics and politics will emerge soon to replace the completely unsustainable models that currently prevail.

Don’t we all want a planet and an affordable and vibrant neighbourhoods for our children and grandchildren to live in?

Macabre and magical extravaganza

I'M REALLY not an interactive theatre type, I'm much too introverted and self-conscious to join in with anything that could attract attention, so having a seat at this production of Little Bulb Theatre’s 'Extravaganza Macabre' was a safe bet…Yeh? writes Susan Hallissey...

Trudging along to the theatre and being told that the play lasts for about 10 hours didn't help. I tried to gasp my last breath of freedom as I walked into Battersea Arts Centre’s newly refurbished and rather lovely Courtyard Theatre. Within five minutes I was singing along with cast and audience about this wonderful city, London! My stale, non-interactive world turned upside down by the somewhat magical and multi-talented cast and creatives Clare Beresford, Alexander Scott and Dominic Conway.

Fast, inventive and extremely funny, this 'Tale of Villainy and Valour in Victorian London' will have you grinning from ear to ear. The melodramatic and 'devilish over the toppery' worked well with this accomplished and confident troupe. Outdoors revealed

TEAM LONDON Bridge have partnered up with arts company Fantasy High Street and commissioned a series of visual arts installations that will animate public space in the north of the borough, writes Michael Holland...

All the artworks are related to nature and the project aims to attract attention to the many parks, gardens and public spaces with a little quirky art and colour.

Artist Janet Caddick and garden designer internationally acclaimed artists ScanLAB Projects. The work represents spatial memories of a dance performance, with digitally fabricated fragments of dancers’ limbs suspended, lingering where their performer once wielded them. Anise puts on graduate show

interest in modular architecture is evident in his installation work ‘Unhabitat’, which incorporates concrete materiality and vernacular design from his home country, Sweden.

Linking the four artists is a passion for the architectural in the environment, whether this is through magnified textures and movements or stories of ‘place’ and ‘non-place’ situated in time.

This is expressed through various media, including video art and screenprinting.

LONDON’S FIRST RAILWAY - WHERE TRAINS STOPPED ONLY ON REQUEST

FOUNDED IN 1836, the now disused Bermondsey Spa Railway Station was London’s first railway, running from London to Greenwich. Built in 1834, the viaduct consisted of 878 brick arches and went through several changes in ownership.

The station was also rebuilt just as many times, before finally closing in 1915 due to cost-saving measures in the First World War. It now stands as part of an industrial state, writes Alex Yeates...

The first part of the station was completed from Spa Road to Deptford and the first train had an engine like Stephenson’s Rocket, and ran on February 8 1836. On December 14 of that year, the Lord Mayor of London rode on the first train out of London Bridge Station. Eventually there were trains every fifteen minutes from 8am to 10pm, and fares were advertised as “Imperial carriage one shilling, open cars sixpence”.

Back in the early days of trains there was no British Rail and it was up to many small companies to construct different routes. In 1833 an Act of Parliament granted the London and Greenwich Railway company to build a four mile viaduct from the southend of London Bridge to Greenwich. Eager to be the first commercial rail line to open, parts of the line were opened in stages before its completion, leading to the company enjoying a stockprice high in 1835.

Spa Station was at the time within the parish of Bermondsey and still surrounded by marshes and market gardens. The station was simple for its time and was based on a narrow two-track viaduct with little room for buildings. It was not even referred to as a “stopping place” due to its size. Accessible by wooden staircases on either side outside the viaduct, the south-side had a wooden hut to sell tickets, and when the

platforms were full, passengers were expected to queue down the steps.

Disaster struck the station only a month after its opening, however, as people began to queue on the tracks as well as the wooden steps. One day,

Daniel Holmes was hit by a train before he could climb back onto the platform. The train’s engine driver, Thomas Millender, is said to have been distracted by Holmes, with the train then colliding with a waiting train already at the station.

Usage of Spa Station dropped

significantly after London Bridge Station opened for business, with drivers beginning to go straight through without stopping if passengers had not requested it. This changed by March 1838 when directors of the company ordered trains to stop there hourly and to reserve half a carriage for passengers to and from the station on Sunday and holidays.

Despite this commitment, the station was shut for the first time in 1838.

In 1840 the owners applied for permission to widen the viaduct to improve the viability of running the station once again. It was finally upgraded in 1843 and the platforms were extended in 1844. By then the South Eastern Railway company took over London and Greenwich Railway, and started rebuilding the station. By March the same year, there was the demolition of the old stairway and the building a new internal one from an arch in West Street, now known as

Marine Street.

In 1867 the station was relocated 180 metres along the viaduct toward the east, with an entrance sitting on Priter Road. It was renamed Spa Road and Bermondsey in October 1877. The station was given a fresh look at the turn of the century in 1899, when the South Eastern and Chatham Railway company was formed out of the South Eastern Railway and Chatham and Dover Railway companies. There it stood till March 15 1915, when it was shut along with Southwark Park and Deptford Stations, as a wartime economy measure.

By the mid-1980s the station was derelict and had become a dump for rubbish. In 1986, British Rail, the Southwark Environment Trust and Southwark Council contributed £50,000 to restoring its façade and installing commemorative plaques. The land was eventually redeveloped into a light industrial site, where it is still used today.

Tropical paradise in SE16 food & drink

IN THE former home of Decathlon, now reigns a utopia of freshly shucked oysters, fluffy Japanese buns, exotic vegan Mexican fare, tiki huts, trampolines and a rum shack. It’s not a mirage. The hipsters really have come to Surrey Quays, writes Laura Burgoine...

Canada Water’s Hawker House Street Feast popped up last year at the same time as its counterparts Dalston Yard, Dinerama in Shoreditch, and Model Market in Lewisham. The brains behind the street food market describe it as ‘tropical car park paradise’. See, this is what happens when they pave paradise and put up a parking lot.

Hawker House (the indoor bit) and the Land of Bamboo (the outdoor expansion) is home to eleven traders with one slot for guest traders. The set up is impossibly charming with a Cape Cod style weather-beaten seafood shack and a kitsch ‘70s diner among the stall holders. Stalls are spread out with ample alfresco chairs and tables and attentive waiters who clear away your rubbish and wipe down your table the moment you’re finished eating; it’s a slick operation. Inside there’s more stalls and an upstairs area with pool tables and retro club lounges.

There are also, pleasingly, puns a plenty with Moister Oyster and Prawnography. The good humoured owner –who runs both stalls- tells me he enjoys making things sound dirty. I imagine this is an occupational hazard when you make your living from shucking.

We were spoilt for choice when perusing lunch options, but strangely there was no coffee to be found on a Saturday early afternoon. “But hipsters love coffee. And there are families here. Parents love coffee,” my friend objected. As the shrill squeals of children on the trampoline pierced the air, we both glanced over at the Whiskey Bar and considered that perhaps a Sippy cup full of hard liquor is what parents love more than coffee on a weekend. Give the people what they want, as they say.

Leaving the day-drinking to the grown-ups, we decided to scope out the Rum Shack for mocktail options. I like non-alcoholic Pina Coladas. And if the bartender hadn’t been so offended by this fact, he might have discovered I also have a fondness for getting caught in the rain. “This is a speciality rum bar,” he sighed, his Hawaiian shirt so ill-matched to his general mood, “but I

suppose I could make a non-alcoholic Pina Colada”. I spent years bartending so I also know how to omit one ingredient from a cocktail recipe, but at least Surrey Quays’ answer to Tom Cruise humoured us enough to ask us what colour cup and paper parasol we wanted. The drinks, served in a pastel pink striped cup paired with a sky blue umbrella, were utterly delicious.

Barkeep just needs to write a melody to go with them and he’s got himself a hit.

I was thrilled to see Club Mexicana represented at Hawker House; I’ve encountered this vegan Mexican joint before at Moveable Feast. The jackfruit tacos, which, somehow, magically, mimic the texture of pulled pork, were muy bueno. The nachos were also exceptionally good. I really hate when nachos are just a mess of beige. Club

Mexicana does the Missoni of nachos: a perfect rainbow of corn chips, cheese, avocado, red pepper, black beans, sour cream and sprinkles of coriander.

Meanwhile, we had a bun in the oven over at Yum Bun. Two in fact –twins. I went for chicken, my dining companion had pork. I have it on good authority this is one of the most popular traders and it’s not hard to see why. Said bun was perfectly light and almost dissolved on my tongue while the fillings were a crispy marriage of simple, tasty flavours.

We finished our feast with a liquid nitrogen vanilla ice-cream from Chin Chin Labs. Apparently the Camden ice-cream brand was the first ice-cream parlour in all of Europe to use quick freezing nitrogen to make their super smooth, gourmet ice-cream. There’s

something of a laboratory vibe to the dessert stand that lured us in; we sensed they weren’t wasting time making ice-cream the archaic way.

The ice-cream had an unmistakable silken texture and at the base of the cone was a pool of marshmallow spread. Like a Cornetto but less obvious.

You’d be hard pressed not to find something to titillate your tastebuds at Canada Water’s most exotic new foodie haven. If you like Pina Coladas and you have half a brain; plan your escape and get down there.

Hawker House is celebrating National Burger Day on Thursday 25 August from 4pm with 18 kinds of burgers, two all-American burger desserts, sliders, pickle eating contests and more.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that they made an order under section 14 (1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 to facilitate highway works by CIK Construction being proposed in part of the above named road.

TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark and in consultation with Transport for London hereby gives notice that to enable development works by Mace to be carried out in the above named road, it intends to make an Order the effect of which will be to close the Cycle Lane in Churchyard Row.

Whilst works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, cyclists and pedestrians will be prohibited from entering the CS7 Cycle Lane in Churchyard Row between it’s junction with A3 Newington Butts and Longville Road.

An alternative route for will be in place via St Mary’s Churchyard or as indicated by the traffic signs displayed.

3.

The permit holders/pay and display bays in Longville Road between Churchyard Row and Dante Road will be suspended as required to allow for ease of movements whilst development works are taking place.

Exemptions will be provided in the Order to permit reasonable access to premises, so far as it is practical without interference with the execution of the said works.

The restrictions will not apply to any vehicle being used in connection with the said works, or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes or anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform.

The restriction will come into operation on the 10th August 2016 for 18 months.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that because of works by Virgin Media made an order the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from making certain movements in the above named road.

Whilst the works are in progress and the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Warner Road Northbound Lane of carriageway between Camberwell New Road and opposite No’s 1-3 Warner Road. (b) Warner Road Southbound Lane of carriageway between Camberwell New Road and opposite No’s 1-3 Warner Road.

The loading bay (Southside) in Warner Road between Camberwell New Road and opposite No’s 1-3 Warner Road will be suspended.

Publication of Member Allowances Scheme: 1 April 2015 – 31 March 2016 / Notice of Alteration to the Scheme

In accordance with the Local Authorities (Members Allowances) (England) Regulations 2003, Southwark Council is publishing details of the allowances paid to members for the financial year 1 April 2015 – 31 March 2016, along with details of the allowances scheme which applied in that year, and giving notice of an alteration to the scheme for the current financial year (2016-2017) and next year (2017-2018).

In January 2015, having considered the recommendations of the council’s constitutional steering panel, the council agreed a revised member allowances scheme from 1 January 2015. The scheme was agreed having taken into account the London Councils Independent Remuneration Panel’s report in 2014. In line with the London Councils’ report, members’ allowances are adjusted in accordance with the national local government pay settlement. Therefore, the allowances were adjusted from 1 April 2016 for the period 2016-2018 as follows: 1% increase payable from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 and 1% increase payable from 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018. The 2017/18 increases will be payable from 1 April 2017. The scheme makes provision for a basic allowance to be paid to all councillors, and for special responsibility allowances (SRAs) to be paid to members who take on significant additional responsibilities. The allowances are grouped in bands, and the amounts for each band are set out in Table 1 below. No member may receive more than one SRA. Members of the licensing sub-committee receive an allowance in recognition of the heavy additional workload of the sub-committee.

Table 1 shows the full year’s allowance for 1 April 2015 – 31 March 2016, plus the current and next financial years’ allowances.

Where cabinet members are appointed in a job share, the average number of hours employed elsewhere are doubled.

At its meeting on 16 March 2016, council assembly agreed a loss of office payment for those members entitled to a full band 3 or full band 4 SRA when their term of office ceases. This payment has been introduced because the need has never been greater for an engaged and responsive leadership in an ethnically and culturally diverse borough. For many members, the decision to relinquish a full-time role elsewhere to serve in cabinet entails a significant reduction in financial security and represents a potential barrier to them accepting a role. Payment for loss of office is likely to expand the range of individuals from groups with fewer financial resources able to take the risk of accepting a cabinet post, and this may have a positive impact. Members must have served at least one year in cabinet to claim a payment for loss of office, which is payable no more than once in any 4-year council term. The level of payment is set at four weeks of the full band 3 or band 4 SRA plus one week for every year in continuous full-time service. The maximum level any member can receive is 13 weeks of the full band 3 or band 4 SRA. The relevant committee will adjudicate on any dispute as to entitlement and any allegation of abuse, and shall be authorised to determine any reduction or withholding of a loss of office payment. All payments will be included in the annual notice publishing members’ allowances.

Statutory co-opted members of scrutiny sub-committees and independent persons for standards issues are entitled to an annual allowance, but do not receive the basic allowance.

The scheme also allows members and statutory co-opted members to claim travelling and subsistence allowances when on council business outside the borough. Disabled members may claim transport costs within the borough. Members may also claim for taxi fares for journeys after 9.00pm in summer (BST) and 7.00pm in winter (GMT). These have remained unchanged. Non-statutory co-optees who do not receive an allowance can claim reimbursement for travel and subsistence.

Members may claim a childcare and carers’ allowance against any costs they incur in arranging carers to look after dependants who cannot be left by themselves by reason of age or other special needs. This allowance is set at the same level as the London Living Wage. The level of the London Living Wage rate which is set annually by the London Living Wage Foundation has also increased to £9.40 (previously £9.15) and applied from 1 April 2016. The allowance may only be claimed in respect of approved duties (see paragraph 27 of the member allowance scheme) and is subject to tax and national insurance deductions at personal rates. Claims are made by completing the childcare and carers’ allowance form which can be obtained from the constitutional team or the scrutiny team.

At present a pension scheme for members is not in operation.

There are 63 elected members of the council. Table 2 includes all members in office at the beginning of and elected during the financial year 2015/2016, as well as appointed statutory co-opted members and independent persons, who were in receipt of an allowance. Please note that the amounts listed are gross figures, before deductions for National Insurance contributions and income tax. Allowances are not salaries but are subject to tax and national insurance as any allowance is considered as income. Any such deductions are subject to personal tax circumstances.

The club have played at Champion Hill in Dulwich for twelve years but the supporters run outfit made a cracking start to life at St Paul’s Stadium in Salter Road by smacking home a quartet of goals.

On the pitch Troy Abbey and Alfie Roche bagged a goal each in the first half.

After the restart interim first team manager Rob Curtis netted before Harry Budgen rounded off the scoring four minutes from time.

Afterwards Curtis told the club’s website: “Today’s game was a fitting start to the journey this club is on.

“All the hard work behind the scenes from the top down was backed up by the performance of the team on the pitch today.

“You could see how much it meant to the lads out there. I’d also like to give a special thanks to the fans who have stuck by us all through thick and thin and have waited a long time to see a 4-0 home win in Fisher’s favour, they deserve it.”

The game had a restricted attendance as it was effectively a test event for the new ground, another friendly game will take place this Saturday before competitive action gets under way on August 13 when Rochester United come to north Southwark.

Saturday's game will be something of a relief for all at Fisher FC as problems with the ground over the summer has meant the club were not able to enter the FA Cup or FA Vase this season.

was our first week with Lee and he’s only just getting to know us so overall it seems to have been a positive start.

“He’s made a good impression on the girls and we’re enjoying training.”

In reply Kent fell 37 runs short of their victory target despite Sam Northeast top scoring with 59 runs from 44 balls.

Two days earlier Surrey dished out a hefty defeat to visitors Gloucestershire in the Royal London One Day Cup. Batting first at the Kia Oval the home side posted an impressive 323 from their

50 overs with Steven Davies knocking off 79 of those runs.

In addition both Rory Burns and Sam Curran picked up half centuries to leave Gloucestershire with a mountain to climb when they took the field to bat.

Skipper Gareth Batty proved to be the visitors’ chief tormentor with the ball as the veteran spinner picked up five wickets at the cost of 41 runs.

By the time Batty had taken the final Gloucestershire wicket the south west county side were 165 runs short of Surrey’s effort.

Kongo début delayed

EX LYNN ABC amateur Chris '2 Slick' Kongo will have to wait until this Saturday to make his professional boxing début after his planned fight last weekend was postponed.

The 23-year-old, who boxed as Chris

Mbwakongo as an amateur, was due to be on a Mickey Helliet bill at York Hall, Bethnal Green last Saturday.

But that event had to be cancelled due to a stabbing incident outside the East London venue, considered to be the home of small hall boxing.

Roy fireworks in vain in T20 Surrey fail

ANOTHER BLISTERING T20 century from Surrey opener Jason Roy was not enough to ensure his side made it to the knock-out section of this year’s NatWest blast competition.

When the home side batted they got off to a more than solid start thanks to knocks of 25 from Suzie Bates and 41 from Georgia Adams.

By the time Bates was bowled at the third wicket down 68 runs were on the board and Lydia Greenway then eased her side home to pick up the win.

Surrey’s first home game in the competition is tonight at the Kia Oval when they take on the Yorkshire Diamonds, proceedings get under way at 6.30pm.

Lodwick seals Dulwich CC win

OPENING BOWLER Jon Lodwick picked up five wickets as he helped Dulwich Cricket Club secure a win in a low scoring encounter against Egham.

The Southwark side batted first on Saturday and they could only accumulate 146 runs by the time they were bowled out in the 43rd over.

Salaar Waqar proved to be the chief run getter on the day as he scored 42 runs with opener Ed Towner also scoring 21 crucial runs to be the next best scorer with the bat.

Egham’s Marlon Cornelius picked up five wickets for 45 runs as he ripped through Dulwich’s top and middle order.

That effort however was matched

by Lodwick, his quintet of wickets costing 48 runs, when Egham batted as he knocked over five of the top six batters in Egham’s batting order.

That left Alexander Gledhill the opportunity to mop up the lower order, he took four wickets at the cost of 25 runs, as Dulwich made it home with twelve runs to spare.

THE MILLWALL traineeship provision is an education and training programme with elements work experience, that is designed to unlock the great potential of young people aged 16 to 19 preparing them for their future careers by helping them to become ‘work ready’.

The programme lasts for 12 weeks and aids the participants with qualification such as the FA level 1 Football Coaching, BTEC Level 2 in the Commercialisation of Football Industries, VRQ Level 1 using Sport to tackle Youth Crime, and the OCNLR Level 1 Award in Employability. As part of the training young people gain the skills

to create a professional CV, appropriate interview techniques, and access to various opportunities of employment. Alongside the education and classroom based activities, there is a strong focus on physical fitness, as we believe in healthy bodies fueling even healthier minds. Elements of personal training, group circuits, and football delivery play a big part of the traineeship opportunity on offer.

Within the structure of the 12 weeks, the staff and young people use team bonding days as a cohesive approach to building trust, understanding, as well as broadening horizons outside of the familiar community settings.

The young people that we work with come from various backgrounds including referrals from Lewisham and Southwark YOS, ex-offenders and those that may have just lost their way. The traineeship is also supported by delivery staff who have graduated from both the Premier League Kicks & London Premier League Kicks (MOPAC) programmes. This highlights the natural progression for those aspiring to make a difference within their community.

Michael is a 17-year-old young man that attended the Traineeship.

He quoted ‘I came to the Traineeship because I wasn’t really doing anything but getting myself

into situations on road. Kelly and Tom really helped me look into my future and aim for something that I wanted to be. I took a few qualifications like the FA level 1 in Football, Employability Skills, Tackling Youth Crime and help with writing my CV. They took me and the others to an information day at Starbucks head office. We got the chance to ask the different people who worked there questions and had an interview to. I was offered a job as a Barista and am waiting for training. I’m also starting at the MTC academy in September to do a BTEC level 3 in Sport. If I hadn’t come to the Traineeship and met Kelly and Tom, I would probably be

even worse than I was before I started. I got a lot to thank them for’.

Scunthorpe have two excellent strikers in Paddy Madden and Tom Hopper and if those two are on fire they could have a decent season.

MILLWALL OWNER John Berylson was among those present at The Den last Saturday to honour Tony Craig for his four different spells at the club since his debut more than thirteen years ago.

Craig, who made his first competitive start for Millwall as an eighteen-yearold in a 3-3 draw at Nottingham Forest in April 2003, was given a guard of honour by both sets of players and took warm applause from those in the stands before his side’s final first-team preseason friendly, which was also his testimonial.

Martin an Wylde do Well for Harris JOE MARTIN and Gregg Wylde were the only two players over the age of 25 included by boss Neil Harris against Welling on Monday night.

Martin was making his first appearance in pre-season after recovering from the calf injury he suffered in the first half of last May’s League One play-off final defeat to Barnsley.

Both players played 45 minutes, with Martin showing no ill-effects after a setback with the injury during the summer which delayed his comeback.

Harris also explained the reasons Wylde was included.

“Some of the players who were here last year told the new boys if you ever get asked to play in a game it’s for one reason, it’s for sharpness, or minutes or

routine,” Harris said. “It’s never a punishment.

“Gregg has always played in a 4-3-3 formation and we play a 4-4-2. He needs that bedding-in period, he didn’t get as many minutes on Saturday against Brentford as someone like David Worrall. I thought 45 minutes (against Welling) sharpens him up. It keeps him in good habits working with and without the ball, and he did really well.

“It keeps him lively and ready to start on Saturday.”

A YEAR ago, Neil Harris was standing in the dugout at Shrewsbury at the start of his first full season as a manager.

It began well, with a 2-1 win, but soon plunged into a mini-crisis after five home defeats in the first six fixtures at The Den. It was an early test of Harris’ resilience, his ability to find out which players had the nerve for a fight and who didn’t. It was also a test of the authority he had to convince his squad that if they kept listening to him things would eventually come good.

Harris started with credit after a superb playing career, so the fans were always going to give him that extra time to show he could start to steer the club on the right course after the turbulent journey that culminated in relegation to League One. Imagine then how Steve Robinson must feel this weekend ahead of the task of revitalising Oldham, his first major job as manager at the age of 41.

The former Northern Ireland assistant manager, who was assistant to current Latics number two Ian Baraclough at Motherwell, takes over from John Sheridan, who saved Oldham from relegation when it looked close to impossible in January after the chaotic spells

in charge of Darren Kelly and David Dunn.

Harris has some empathy for Robinson. He also admits it makes it difficult to assess what kind of challenge Oldham will present, but then he quickly re-focuses his thoughts on his own and his squad’s objectives.

“He’s probably learning a lot about his players every day and in every game,” Harris said of Robinson. “It’s definitely a bit of an unknown for us in terms of what players and what system we’re going to face.

“I’ve obviously been following them for the last few weeks. Steve has changed his system a few times and there’s been a big shift in personnel with the overhaul of the squad at the end of last season.

“What doesn’t change is what we think we’re good at and what we think we need to improve on. We will focus on that this week.

“We’re always diligent about the opposition and think about the threats they’re going to pose to us.

“At the start of the season it’s still about yourself, getting yourself right and making sure you’re prepared and focussed and organised for the first league game.”

That win at Shrewsbury, when Steve Morison and Lee Gregory scored, didn’t indicate subsequent form, and it was a number of months into the season before Harris figured out his preferred starting line-up.

Many of those early problems played out in front of The Den crowd, many of whom voiced their concerns that the task was too big for someone with so little management experience at that level.

Millwall will start this campaign at home, and though Harris said he wasn’t too bothered where the opening fixture was played, he admitted the anticipation is building ahead of the 3pm kick-off this Saturday and he feels the side showed signs against Brentford what they are capable of.

“I think we’ll have a decent crowd, even if holiday time does put a dampener on things with people away,” Harris said.

“Certainly anyone who came last Saturday and saw how we played will be telling friends and family how good we were against a topeight Championship club. And they’ll be coming again this week.

“We have to put in a performance from day one that sets our stall out for the season, that’s what I’ll be telling my players to do, to set some standards that you want to reach and you want to keep to all season.

“The only way to stay in the team is to set standards and keep them up.

“I wasn’t too fussed about whether the first game would be home or away but now it’s coming close it’s a nice thought that we’ll be here at the weekend.”

JORDAN ARCHER is more focussed on team rather than personal goals this season – and he is hoping he won’t be in the limelight for spectacular saves like his headed clearance from Mark Beevers’ sloppy back-pass against Peterborough last February.

Archer kept 20 clean sheets in 49 games in all competitions last season, but they counted for little in the end as Millwall missed out on promotion from League One. With David Forde having departed for Portsmouth for the season, Archer is even more assured of his first-team place.

But he won’t be taking anything for granted ahead of the 2016-17 campaign which starts this weekend with Millwall facing Oldham.

“Last season I had to really come in and prove myself,” Archer said.

“This season I have proved myself a little bit but I still have to improve.

Kevin Pressman will keep on working us hard, the same work ethic is there.

“I’m going into this season hopefully as the number one whereas last season I was second choice.

“It was good to get back in after the break to see all the boys. It was a disappointing end to the season but we’ve brought a few new boys in and it’s been a hard pre-season.

“I’m sure we’re going to be fit and the boys are raring to go for next Saturday at home to Oldham.”

MILLWALL MIDFIELDER Shaun Williams has urged his team-mates to “move on” quickly from the disappointment of missing out on a place in the Championship last season.

And the 29-year-old Irishman believe the Lions have an advantage in terms of fitness after a shorter summer break than usual.

“It was disappointing and I don’t think we turned up on the day,” Williams said of the play-off final defeat to Barnsley. “But it is what it is and we have to move on from that now and build from it.

“I was glad to get back doing a bit of training. A two-week break is probably enough and then you start getting a little bit bored.

“It would have been more difficult had we been off for longer. So we didn’t have as far to go to build back up the fitness, everyone had a decent level. It wasn’t as tough as usual.”

Williams is confident he is starting from a more solid platform after a foot injury towards the end of the 2014-15 season meant he was playing catch-up when pre-season training began last summer.

And he also admitted it took him time to get used to the direct style boss Neil Harris wanted his team to play.

“Last year when I started pre-season it was my first day running in three months,” Williams said. “I’m coming back fit now and that will stand me in good stead.

“This season we have a game plan that we’re sticking to. I think at the start of last year things were a bit up in the air, staff and players didn’t know which way we were going.

“Eventually it clicked so we want to take it on from there.

“I’d never played in a two in a 4-42 in all my career, I’d always been in a team that had passed the ball. It takes time to get used to new things and hopefully a year’s learning will stand me in good stead for this season.”

CENTRE-BACK Shaun Hutchinson may have to wait to make his competitive debut for Millwall after limping off with a tight hamstring in Tony Craig’s testimonial against Brentford last weekend.

If Hutchinson misses out, Craig will partner Byron Webster in the centre of Neil Harris’ defence, with Shane Ferguson starting at left-back.

“Hutch had a scan on Monday and is a doubt for Saturday,” Harris said.

“Any player that comes off during any game is always going to be a doubt for the next one. Hutch will struggle for this weekend.”

Joe Martin played 45 minutes against Welling on Monday night, but Harris is unlikely to risk him with the following Tuesday’s League Cup clash at Barnet a more realistic return date.

Ben Thompson also went off against the Bees after taking a kick to the calf, but he has trained this week and is in contention to start against the Latics.

Harris said: “Ben was more of a caution, it was just a kick. It was like a dead calf and he could have carried on, but there is no need to take any risks at this stage. It worked out quite well that him and Jimmy (Abdou) got 45 minutes each.

“Joe was really good, but a little bit rusty as you’d expect for a first 45 minutes of football. It was good to see him back out there. He could have

John Sheridan, who took over from Dunn after the former Blackburn Rovers midfielder was sacked following the 2-1 defeat to Millwall in January, guided the club from the relegation zone to safety but he left in May to take over at League Two Notts County.

It looks like it could be another season of struggle for Oldham and Millwall will be confident of starting the 2016-17 season with a win this weekend.

NEIL Harris had a one-word answer when asked if he believed Lee Gregory would still be at Millwall after the summer transfer window closes at the end of August.

“Yes,” the Millwall boss said with no hesitation when the question was put to him at the Lions’ training session in front of fans at The Den on Tuesday morning.

Gregory has already been the subject

of three failed bids this summer from Championship Rotherham, with Millwall showing their determination to keep hold of their striker.

However, a source close to the player’s circle told the News that Sheffield-born Gregory, who was Millwall’s top scorer last season with 27 goals, is open to a move back up north should the opportunity arise.

For now, the 27-year-old is part of a Millwall squad preparing for Saturday’s opening League One fixture at The Den against Oldham.

Shaun Hutchinson missed Tuesday’s training session and is a doubt with a hamstring strain. That means Tony Craig could shift from left-back –

where he started all four of Millwall’s first-team pre-season friendlies – to centre-back to partner Byron Webster with Shane Ferguson dropping into the defence.

With the scrapping of the emergency loan window this season, Harris feels having players who can fill in in a number of positions could be crucial this season.

“Versatility is going to be key this year without the loan window,” Harris said.

“I’ve got some players who can play in different positions during a game or for the odd game. I’m not saying I particularly want to play central midfield players at full-back for four

or five games in a row.

“But we’ve got options. In the forward areas I’ve got versatile players like Aiden (O’Brien) and Fred (Onyedinma) who are excellent wide or up front.

“Tony is comfortable at left centrehalf or right centre-half, where he played last year, and at full-back.

“I’m sure there are going to be stages during parts of the season where we’re going to be a little bit light and someone is going to have to play out of position.

“But going into Saturday we certainly have options. There is a lot for me to consider before this weekend.”

The Lions were last week drawn in a group with West Brom’s U23 side, Gillingham and Luton.

Last season, Millwall’s first round win over Peterborough kick-started their season after four successive home losses.

They went on to reach the semifinals of the competition when it was known as the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, which has been revamped and renamed to include a group phase and several Category One academies.

And Harris believes a rethink was overdue as he outlined this season’s plans.

“I was up for a change, that’s for sure,” Harris said. “The competition had been dwindling for a few years.

It’s a good competition when you get towards the end of it. It’s just how you perceive it as a club.

“Last year we took it really seriously because it was a chance to build momentum and get some wins, and we really enjoyed it.

“Other than a crazy 35 minutes at The Den against Oxford we had an excellent competition. It brought us some joy last year and this year we’re taking it seriously but also seeing it as an opportunity to use some of the U21s.

“There will certainly be an opportunity for younger players to play in that. I have to play five players from the previous game but I’ll be playing young players as well.”

The EFL have yet to announce the fixture list for the 2016-17 competition.
