AFTER SETTING out almost four years ago to fundraise £100,000 for Evelina London Children’s Hospital to buy vital lifesaving equipment, the News has just £772 left to go before we reach our target.

Since giving ourselves the ambitious target back in 2013, our own News staff have swum the English Channel, climbed the

three highest peaks in the UK in 24 hours, staged a Full Monty show on the Old Kent Road, painted portraits for auction, sung Christmas carols at Tower Bridge, swum the Hellespont strait between Asia and Europe, climbed Mount Kilimanjaro - the highest peak in Africa, cycled from London to Paris in 24 hours and taken part in the toughest footrace on earth, the Marathon des Sables in the Sahara.

Friends, family and members of the community have gone

above and beyond to help – including seven brave readers who performed a Full Monty in front of hundreds of onlookers at a packed club, after training for months. Even the leader of Southwark Council spent a day performing some of his staff’s toughest jobs, from rat catching to bin emptying.

But now, with just a fraction of our target still left to raise, we’re asking you to help us in one final push to hit our target.

Creating miracles

I

T HAS taken four years and a tremendous amount of effort to get this close to reaching our £100,000 target for the Evelina Children’s Hospital, but that is nothing compared to the struggle the little ones we are doing this for have to endure.

To start life is such a precarious situation is heart-breaking to watch, but for the staff and supporters of this hospital the joy of seeing a little life grow and thrive is truly magical.

For so many of us, luckily, we will never really comprehend the torture that faces parents who find their little baby’s life hanging by a thread, hoping that the nurses and doctors can perform some miracle to get them through.

Love on its own is not enough - state-ofthe-art equipment is what is needed and the hospital will always require our help to get the very latest and the best to pull them through. From severely premature babies, to infants and even teenagers suffering chronic illness, the funding received under the NHS will always have to be added to.

Before we embarked on the campaign in 2013 we wanted to create a shopping list of exactly where your money would go. For Gaby and James Butler, who have been visiting their six-week-old daughter at the hospital’s neonatal unit after she was born prematurely at just 27 weeks, the equipment means everything. Their daughter has been using one of the Sophie ventilation machines, which the News fundraised for, which helps her to breathe and even detects when she has forgotten to take a breath.

And to have on our very doorstep a place where the impossible does come true is something we should all treasure and support.

Blow the whistle

ITH LEWISHAM’S own chief executive now calling for an independent review into the development plans by Renewal around Millwall’s ground, the final whistle should surely be blown on this whole sorry affair.

We have constantly argued alongside Millwall, the football community and growing band of politicians that Renewal’s proposal does not provide anywhere near enough social benefit to justify its approval, which would spell the end of a club that is part of the very fabric of the area.

Now it has been revealed that the Surrey Canal Sports Foundation is alleged to have falsely claimed to have secured £2 million worth of funding from Sport England for the development.

In this week’s edition we have included a timeline to highlight just what a shambles the whole so called regeneration project has been.

Maybe now Lewisham Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, will finally see reason and take seriously Millwall’s own plans to rejuvenate the area.

Finn, Aoife and Orla as they appear on the ad

TWO DULWICH Irish dancers and their carrot-chopping brother have achieved prime time TV fame on the new Sainsburys TV ad.

Orla, thirteen, Aoife, eight and Finn, eleven, star in the supermarket giant’s latest advert, which features a montage of “real people” having fun, dancing and cooking in their kitchens.

Mum Fiona Christmas filmed her kids and submitted the video back in October – but the family didn’t learn they’d made the final cut until they saw their faces beaming out from the screen on live TV. “When it came on the TV we just stood there and screamed and screamed!” said Fiona. “We knew we’d been chosen for the internet version, which is longer and with more people. We didn’t know we’d made the final cut for TV though! The kids were over the moon!”

Sainsbury estimate that they looked at about 250 entries, with just 34 making it into the 60 second TV ad.

Fiona learned about the competition via her lindehop teacher husband, who saw an ad from a casting agency on his Facebook.

They submitted a one-minute audition tape, which showed the girls – who train at Deborah Whelan Dance in Dulwich – Irish dancing and Finn next to them chopping carrots.

They were invited to submit a second video, this one three minutes long but “doing exactly the same thing.”

“I was so excited to see the ad,” said Fiona. “The kids were just over the moon.”

Orla has been training at Deborah Whelan’s since she was four years old and Aoife “since she could walk.”

“They absolutely love it,” said the proud mum. “They love Deborah and they love the other kids there.”

While the girls love Irish dance, Finn is a keen musician and plays guitar.

Fiona said that Orla has recently been out of action dancing due to ill health but “seeing the TV ad has given her a real boost again.”

Dance teacher Deborah, who’s danced with Michael Flatley, said: “I’m absolutely delighted for the girls. It's great that they had the opportunity to showcase their talent and that Irish dancing was even a part of the advert.

We are all very proud of the girls.” * Students from Deborah Whelan Dance are performing at Surrey Quays shopping centre on Saturday, February 11 at 1:30pm (in front of The Range).

Woman attacked as she asked pair to stop having sex on tube

KENNINGTON: A woman was pushed and spat on by a couple whom she asked to stop having sex on the tube, British Transport Police said.

The victim spotted the couple’s night tube romp on January 14 at 1am, as the train passed through Kennington on the Northern Line.

As she approached the brazen couple to demand they stop, the man got up and began his attack on the victim.

PC Suleman Yazdani, who is leading an investigation, said: “This is highly inappropriate behaviour, the woman was simply asking this couple to stop, there was no need for aggression.

“If you were on that train or saw anybody acting suspiciously I would urge you to contact us as soon as possible. Any information, no matter how small, could be vital to our investigation.”

65 SITES EARMARKED FOR DEVELOPMENT IN NEW PLAN

Potential locations for 40,000 homes identified borough-wide by Southwark

SIXTY-FIVE potential locations for over 40,000 homes, infrastructure, schools and businesses have been earmarked by the council.

The New Southwark Plan (NSP) was discussed on Tuesday at a meeting of Southwark Council’s cabinet members.

Highlights include suggestions to reopen Camberwell Railway Station, a new Chambers Wharf shopping destination in Bermondsey, and housing schemes above the Morrisons and 332334 Walworth Road.

Writing ahead of the meeting, the cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, councillor Mark Williams, said the council had an “ambitious target” to deliver 41,040 new homes.

“All areas of Southwark will contribute towards meeting our housing challenge,” Cllr Williams said.

He added that there is a vision to

“strengthen and grow” the local economy and create jobs by providing new commercial space for small, medium and large businesses.

The NSP is broken up into twelve “Area Visions”, each containing specific planning policies on “scale” “design” and “capacity” for each area to help developments “integrate into their surroundings”.

The twelve areas are: Bankside and Borough; Bermondsey; Blackfriars Road; Camberwell; Dulwich; East Dulwich; Elephant and Castle; Herne Hill; London Bridge; Peckham; Rotherhithe; Walworth. Nunhead is the only place where no new developments are specifically mentioned.

The entire NSP will now go to public consultation, before the final stage of being rubber stamped by a government planning inspector. A full list of addresses labelled for future developments will be published with this story on www.southwarknews.co.uk.

IPCC appeal for witnesses after death at bus station Cathedral funeral for local historian News Page 14

The Independent Police Commission (IPCC) is appealing for witnesses following the death of a 63-year-old man in Peckham in December.

The incident began on December 8 at around 11.30pm.

A 999 call was made, concerning the man who refused to leave the bus he had been travelling on when it arrived at Peckham Bus Station. The man had been travelling on Route 381.

The man had had a cardiac arrest and died in hospital a few days later.

The IPPC, which oversees the police complaints system in England and Wales, is appealing for people who may have been in the area at the time or who may have video/picture footage of what happened.

“The IPCC has begun an independent investigation following the death of a man in Peckham, south London. The man was removed from a bus by City of London police and placed in a bus shelter. He subsequently required medical treatment for a cardiac arrest and was taken to hospital where he later died.”

The money we raise will go towards buying baby ventilators which cost £52,000 for two and are crucial for very premature babies to survive.

It will also pay for an infant warming system worth £15,000 which is an open cot providing heat for babies that are too sick to maintain their own temperature, and an intensive care cot worth £19,000 which mimics the womb. £14,000 will also go towards Evelina Hospital School which provides oneto-one bedside tuition for chil-dren at the hospital, many of whom are battling life-threatening illnesses.

To see just how important the equipment is to the Evelina and the countless parents and children who pass through the hospital’s doors every day, we met up with the parents of two babies who are currently being cared for in the neonatal unit.

Based on the grounds of St Thomas’ Hospital, the dedicated team at Evelina London take in poorly babies from as far afield as Luton down to Southampton.

Gaby Butler has been visiting her six-week-old daughter at the hospital’s neonatal unit after giving birth to her prematurely at just 27 weeks.

The 31-year-old, who lives in Kent with her husband James and their other two young children, was out for dinner with friends in Leicester Square

in late November when she suffered a dizzy spell and abdominal pains.

Gaby was rushed to St Thomas’ and remained there for another three weeks before giving birth to her new daughter by emergency caesarean section in mid-December.

“When I arrived I was 23 weeks and five days,” she said. “I had had a scan just two week earlier and that was fine so there was no indication at all [that her daughter would be born prematurely].

“I think everyone has a little niggle of worry at the back of their mind when they get pregnant but you never plan to have this situation happen.”

She is currently stable but Gaby said it had been like “a game of snakes and ladders” with her baby taking one step forward, only to take two back.

“She was really, really poorly at first,” said the former primary school teacher. “After sending the placenta away for research they found out it had become infected.

“When she was born, she weighed just two pounds four and struggled to get oxygen inside her for the first couple of days.

“The first couple of weeks were really touch and go while every day another organ had an issue and we slowly, slowly made a few steps forward and then a few steps back.

“I definitely take each day as it comes because there’s no predicting what can happen,” said Gaby.

“She’s having a bit of a stable time at the moment but we don’t dare dream that she will come home, although we always hope.

“It’s lovely to read about success stories but you know that all of those can come out another way.

Gentiana Jaha, 30, and her partner Florim Deliu, 33, have also been visiting their daughter Erina, who was born prematurely at just 23 weeks and six days old.

Sadly, Erina’s identical twin, Medina, wasn’t strong enough to survive and died just 30 minutes after she was born.

Mother-of-four Gentiana, who also has three other daughters aged ten, five and three, had to wait a few days before seeing Erina properly after the tiny baby was rushed off to the Evelina while she remained in hospital recovering.

“We visited and spent a few hours with her and she was on the phototherapy machine for her jaundice levels,” said Gentiana, who lives in Crystal Palace with her family.

“We didn’t know much about neonatal when we first came here so it was very new to us. It is just amazing what they do in here.

“It was difficult at first because we didn’t know what to expect but now that it’s been six weeks we are much more used to the setting.”

Erina weighed just 500 grams when she was born but has now grown to weigh 800 grams and is getting stronger.

“She is doing well,” said Gentiana.

“She has had quite a few issues and had PDA [patent ductus arteriosus] surgery to fix what was like a hole in the heart – but now it’s just her breathing and her lungs.”

Gentiana and Florim, an Uber driver, travel about 40 minutes by car to visit Erina every other day and believe it could be another three months before their daughter can go home.

Southwark in top 100 for apprentices Pedestrian injured SOUTHWARK COUNCIL is the only London authority named in the top 100 apprenticeship employers in the UK.

Its position among companies like Mercedes-Benz UK and BT plc was announced on January 20 at the National Apprenticeships Awards.

Southwark’s cabinet member for business, culture and social regeneration, councillor Johnson Situ, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for Southwark, to be considered an equal player against so many big businesses with huge budgets.

Southwark’s current policy is to directly employ 100 new apprentices per year, making up three per cent of its workforce.

It aims to create 2,000 new apprenticeships with other employers in the borough between 2014 and 2018. 600 of this number have been achieved so far, and a further 800 are planned for this year.

The council also says a high number of its former apprentices are now in management positions.

BERMONDSEY: A woman in her 40s was treated by paramedics after being involved in a collision with a motorbike.

Police were called to the junction of Southwark Park Road and St James’ Road at about 5.45pm on Monday, January 23. “Officers and London Ambulance Service were called to the scene and treated the pedestrian, a woman in her forties, for non-life threatening injuries,” the police said. No arrests have been made and police inquiries continue.

12 years for stabbing man in his own flat

AN EX-CONVICT has been jailed after breaking into a man’s flat in SE16, stabbing him in the chest, and stealing his possessions.

Twenty-four-year-old Christopher Mayamba-Kusosa, of no fixed address having recently left prison, was on Friday sent back to jail with a twelve-year sentence for the brutal raid.

He was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court for the attack he carried out on August 19 with two other men in their twenties. The three gangsters fled on foot from two bobbies – PCs Whitfield and Wallace – who chased and arrested Mayamba-Kusosa.

The officers were able to recover the victim’s stolen items, and also found class A drugs on MayambaKusosa.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle and Camberwell and Peckham MP Harriet Harman were among the 43 Labour MPs who wrote to the PM. Neil has again said “whatever happens” he will vote against the forthcoming bill to trigger Article 50, which officially kicks off the Brexit process.

Theresa May last week stated that her government will seek to completely remove Britain from the EU, including the common market with tariff-free trade, and the free-movement-of-people agreement.

May hopes to have negotiated a new free-trade deal within two years of the Article 50 being triggered. She added that failure to negotiate a new deal would see Britain adopt World Trade Organisation (WTO) tariffs instead.

Eleven judges of the Supreme Court gave their verdict on Tuesday: that triggering Article 50 and the Brexit process could not be done without a bill being approved by Parliament.

Meanwhile, reports surfaced on Friday that Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn may order his MPs to vote in favour of the forthcoming Article 50 bill, but this yet to be confirmed.

But Neil, an outspoken critic of Corbyn, told the News he has written to Labour whips requesting a free vote rather than a whipped vote.

“I will be voting against it whatever happens, with the interests of my constituents,” Neil said.

“Bermondsey and Old Southwark overwhelming voted to remain in the EU. I made a promise that I would never vote for anything that I believe would do damage to people in my constituency, and it’s becoming more and more clear that this would do damage.

“Every time I visit a college or school

and I ask children what they think, they all say we should have remained, and it’s this group who should have had a vote in the referendum. I also know three businesses that are considering leaving London.”

A spokesperson for Helen Hayes, MP for Dulwich and West Norwood, said her position “had not changed” since the News asked about her voting intentions in November. Helen previously said she will vote against triggering article 50 unless there is a second referendum on the terms of Britain’s negotiation strategy or if a general election is called.

Harriet Harman, in a statement to the News on Tuesday, said: “Today’s Article 50 ruling confirms that Parliament, not the Prime Minister, has the power to trigger Article 50. By choosing to fight this the Prime Minister has wasted taxpayers’ money trying to prevent Parliament having a say on the Article 50 process.

“I accept the referendum result and the will of the British people and will not frustrate the Article 50 process. But this does not mean the Government has a blank cheque. This is just the start of the process. Once Article 50 is triggered we have to make sure that the Government puts the UK in the best position possible to weather the trade storm - including now from President Trump in the USA. “We will press throughout the Brexit negotiations for a deal that prioritises jobs, the economy and workers’ rights and try to amend the Article 50 Bill to prevent the Conservatives tearing up existing economic and social protections and to ensure the legal status of EU citizens in the UK is resolved before negotiations begin and the Government aim to secure full tariff free access to the Single Market. Living standards and EU citizens must not be used as a bargaining chip in Brexit negotiations.

“There also needs to be a proper vote in Parliament on the final Brexit deal – to be held before the Government agrees any final deal with the EU. “This is a difficult set of decisions for those of us who wanted to stay in the EU. But Labour is handling this collegiately and will continue to discuss it together.”

New GCSE league tables show ‘fantastic results’

SOUTHWARK schools have much to celebrate after three ranked among the top in the country for their GCSE results and pupils outperformed the national average in general.

Figures released by the Department for Education on Thursday, January 19, contain the official, revised results for students who completed their GCSEs in 2016, and include a range of data on how each school performed.

This is the first time every school in the country has been rated by the Government’s new measures, ‘Attainment 8’ and ‘Progress 8’, which were introduced with the aim of offering broader information about how a school is serving its pupils.

The Government’s floor target for Progress 8 is -0.5, with a score of 0 meaning a pupil made expected progress, and a positive score above this meaning a pupil made better progress than expected.

The maximum number of points a school can score for the Attainment 8 measure is 80 points per pupil. The national average across all state secondary schools was 49.9 this year.

Following the performance tables shake-up, many schools who traditionally topped the charts have this year been knocked off the top spots.

Three schools in the borough were celebrating on Thursday after making it into the top 20 in the country for Progress 8 scores, according to the DfE. Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich ranked eighth in the country under the new Progress 8 measure alone, with an impressive score of 0.93.

St Thomas the Apostle College ranked thirteenth with a score of 0.91, and Sacred Heart Catholic School ranked eighteenth with a score of 0.80.

As a whole, Southwark achieved above the national average, including scoring 0.22 in Progress 8 and 52.9 in Attainment 8.

The figures show that 69.3 per cent of pupils in Southwark achieved a grade C or above in English and maths GCSE compared to the national average of 59.3 per cent, and 35.8 per cent achieved the English baccalaureate compared with 23.1 per cent nationally.

Serge Cefai, head of Sacred Heart and executive head of St Thomas, said the Southwark community should be very proud of the results.

“To have both of my schools in the top 20 in the country for the new measure I think I need to retire because I don’t think it gets any better than this,” he said.

“We are delighted and Southwark should be proud; it’s a testament to what can be done.

“To get so high up on the national figure is something that everyone should celebrate.

“For me, I would like to thank both schools – Sacred Heart and St Thomas – and I would like to mention Mr Connolly, headteacher at St Thomas, who has been fundamental to us being able to turn that school around.”

“We’re delighted to have achieved such incredible results with our girls, results which mean that girls achieve nearly a grade higher in their GCSEs at Harris Girls’ than the national average,” she said.

their teachers and parents.

“Being eighth nationally for progress and top in Southwark is a bonus. The most important thing for us is that the girls at HGAED leave here ready to take on the world and we’re proud that we’ve helped them to get the qualifications that will enable them do just that.”

How have the league tables changed?

Until this year, secondary school performance has been judged mainly by what proportion of pupils get five GCSEs at grade A*C, including English and maths.

Instead two new measures, known as Attainment 8 and Progress 8, have been adopted. These will now be used by the Government to judge whether schools are performing adequately.

Why have they been changed?

For years teachers and heads had complained that to judge a school by its results in five GCSEs alone was unfair, because it did not offer broader information about the ability of the pupils being taught.

If a high-achieving child comes to a school, it will not take as much effort to get them to a good GCSE grade as it would a lower-achieving child.

There was also concern that the benchmark only assessed pupils who got results at grade C and above. The new measure takes into account achievement from grades A*-G.

What is Progress 8?

In basic terms, it aims to measure how well a school is serving its pupils by looking at where they started and where they end up.

It does this by looking at attainment in eight GCSE, or equivalent, subjects from grade A*-G for each pupil.

These results are then compared against the results of other pupils who came into secondary schools nationally with the same attainment levels.

A figure for those results across the school year group is then calculated.

This result is then set within confidence levels, which set out how accurate the Government believes the Progress 8 score is.

Progress 8 scores generally fall somewhere between -1 and 1. The number (which is pretty abstract to all but the statisticians) is then placed into one of five bands: well above average, above average, average, below average, and well below average.

It is these bandings which will be of most use to parents.

What is Attainment 8?

Attainment 8 is about the raw results across individual pupils' best eight subjects.

But they are not just any old subjects.

English and maths are compulsory and worth double points.

Then there is the choice of three subjects from the English baccalaureate (core academic subjects), and any other three from the DfE’s approved list of qualifications - including vocational qualifications.

The results are only recorded at the school level and an average score per pupil is calculated and published.

The maximum number of points per school is 80 points per pupil. The national average across all state secondary school is 49.9 this year.

LEAGUE tables showing the performance of Southwark students in A-level and equivalent qualifications have also been published by the Department for Education.

This year, the ranking system has been changed, with the average total point score per student no longer included.

From now on, the league tables will focus primarily on schools' average point score per academic entry, which is the total point score achieved by students in all academic qualifications divided by those students’ total number of academic entries. An A* is worth 60, A 50, B 40, C 30, D 20, and E 10.

Schools will also be scored on the proportion of students that achieved ABB with two ‘facilitating subjects’ – subjects including maths, English literature and science which are identified

as preferable by Russell Group universities.

In the revised results, James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) scored the highest in Southwark for average point score per academic entry with 50.86, followed by Alleyn’s School with 48.41 and Dulwich College with 45.50.

JAGS also scored highest for the percentage of students achieving at least three levels at grades AAB or better, at least two of which were in facilitating subjects, with a score of 72.2 per cent.

Alleyn’s School was close behind with 53.5 per cent and Dulwich College achieved 51.5 per cent.

Sally-Anne, headteacher at JAGS, told the News: “It’s really good news and it’s a great tribute to the girls and especially to the teachers and how hard they work because you don’t get those results without the two working together.”

Alleyn’s headteacher, Dr Gary Savage, said: “We are immensely proud of the achievements of our boys and girls.”

A ST Thomas the Apostle College (STAC) student has beaten off the best of the best to land a scholarship to a top US university.

Emanuele Guidi, eighteen, will study Molecular Engineering at the prestigious University of Chicago (UoC) after he finishes his A- levels in the summer.

He was supported through the admissions process by the Sutton Trust’s US Programme, which encourages academically talented low and middle income British students to consider studying at American universities.

The South Bermondsey boy, who’s studying seven A-levels, will be awarded $81,000 from the institution to undertake his studies there.

“I’m really excited,” said Emanuele.

“Nervous – but excited. It’ll be an interesting time to go there in terms of politics, too – with the new president, I

expect there’ll be lots of student activism.

Which I plan to be a part of!”

Following a gruelling admissions process which included three exams, four essays and an interview, Emanuele was offered a place in October. In December he found out he’d secured the scholarship. “I didn’t expect to get the place. It’s so competitive. They only have space for a total of one hundred international students,” he said.

Emanuele is predicted seven A*s in his A-levels, which include Maths, Further Maths and Advanced Further Maths.

When he graduates, he hopes to secure a job in a related field, such as cancer research.

Deputy Head of Sixth Form at STAC, Ms. Clare Rodin, said: “We are incredibly proud of how well he has done. The aim of our sixth form is to ensure pupils make the right future choices for them and to prepare them to achieve to the best of their ability. This is exactly that happening.”

LEWISHAM COUNCIL boss Barry Quirk has cast plans to sell off land around Millwall’s stadium for housing into further doubt after revealing he was looking into an independent inquiry of the charity at the heart of the development.

The chief executive said in a letter to Lewisham’s mayor and councillors seen by the News that he was “urgently” putting arrangements in place to secure an independent external review into Surrey Canal Sports Foundation after allegations of false funding claims surfaced on Friday (January 20).

Mr Quirk’s revelations came after a reports alleged Surrey Canal Sports Foundation had falsely claimed to have secured £2million worth of funding from Sport England for developer Renewal’s controversial New Bermondsey housing scheme which plans to build on land used by Millwall.

“Late on Friday, January 20, I received formal requests by email from the Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, and Cllr Alan Hall, the chair of overview and scrutiny, both asking me to commission an independent review of the matters

recommending the grant of half a million pounds of public money to the foundation and repeated as “a pledge in principle” in CPO documents produced by the council last year, according to the Guardian.

But allegedly no such funding agreement exists and no application for a funding agreement is in process – and Sport England confirmed that it had not had any official correspondence with the foundation since September 2014.

The funding revelations could cast doubt on the future of Renewal’s £1billion project which was set up to deliver 2,400 new homes, a new Overground station, new sports facilities and up to 1,500 permanent jobs.

Lewisham Council’s plans to compulsorily purchase land around the Den currently used by the football club for its community trust, café, car park and youth academy has been the subject of ongoing protest among fans and the public.

The Charities Commission has also confirmed it is investigating allegations that false claims have been made about funding for the scheme.

Lewisham Council still had the February 8 cabinet meeting listed as going ahead as the News went to press.

“I was asked to join the Sports Foundation Trust in 2010 but only limited info & involvement since,” he added.

Mourners pack in to cathedral for funeral

MORE THAN 500 mourners bid a final farewell to the late historian Stephen Humphrey attended his funeral at St George’s Cathedral on January 19.

The 64-year-old was chief archivist at the Local Studies Library for 30 years, and the borough’s most prolific history author and researcher.

Throughout the ceremony, pillars of sunlight pierced through the stained glass windows of the cathedral that was a short walk from Stephen’s home in Kennington, and where he grew up in Elephant and Castle.

Glowing tributes were paid by bishops of the Roman Catholic Church, and former colleagues.

Stephen’s former colleague at the Studies Library, Len Riley, received a round of applause for his eulogy which he rounded off by saying “People in Southwark generally will be poorer without his knowledge and friendship”.

“I have known Stephen since 1977,” Len said.

“Stephen was foremost a very keen historian, endlessly curious and tremendously well read, with an incisive and critical mind. As an author his writing was simple, direct and clear.

“He had a fine dry sense of humour. He had a keen eye for the absurd and no pun was ever too odd.

“He always maintained a degree of affection for the people of Southwark, whatever their background.”

A eulogy was given by the mayor of Southwark, Kath Whittam, who called

Stephen “a source of civic pride and inspiring to young people”.

Cllr Whittam added that Stephen “had a keen awareness of how shared history could bring us closer together”.

Stephen was born in Elephant and Castle in 1952, but his father originally came from Petworth in West Sussex, where Stephen was buried.

As a youngster he attended John Ruskin School from 1957, and Westminster City School from 1963. Mr Humphrey was accepted at Clare College at the University of Cambridge in 1971, as well as University College London from 1979.

He was best known for writing fifteen books and booklets, including: The Story of Rotherhithe (1997, 2004); Southwark in the 20th Century (1999); Elephant & Castle: A History, which was published

after 20 years of research.

He was involved with the Southwark and Lambeth Archaeological Society for 40 years.

His many achievements and contributions were recognised by Southwark Council at the 2012 Civic

Stephen was found dead in his flat in Otto Street, Kennington, on November 30 after suffering a heart attack.

Council appeals to government over Aylesbury leaseholders as judge rules in its favour

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL has written to secretary of state Sajid Javid, inviting him to resolve their Aylesbury Estate regeneration legal battle outside of court.

A hearing at the Royal Courts of Justice on January 18 was the latest attempt by Southwark to overturn the government’s rejection of a compulsory purchase order (CPO) of eight remaining leaseholder flats.

Southwark and the government have been locked in the legal battle since September to decide the fate of the leaseholders in Phase One of the estate: Chartridge, Chiltern, Arklow and Bradenham.

Mr Javid denied permission for the CPO on the grounds that it would “contravene” leaseholders’ human rights. The leaseholders had been offered compensation of less than £300,000, and some even below £250,000, which would force them to leave the area to find new homes.

At the hearing last Thursday, His Honour Judge Collins gave Southwark the right to a judicial review, and challenge Mr Javid’s decision to reject the CPO. Now, the leader of Southwark Council, councillor Peter John, has called on the Mr Javid to resolve the dispute outside of court.

Cllr John said: “I wrote to Sajid Javid last year, asking him to look again at his decision, but his response was effectively that he would see us in court.

“This week a Judge echoed our view that the decisions to date have been based in part on speculation and

misunderstanding, and I would urge the secretary of state to listen to this impartial view, and meet with us to properly consider this important issue.

“His decision threatens the future of homebuilding in London and across the country, and it deserves his full attention. We can also save the taxpayer considerable sums of money if we can resolve this without involving the courts. I have written to him to request an urgent meeting.”

Mr Javid’s staff have refused to comment on Cllr John’s invitation.

While Judge Collins’ verdict fell in

the council’s favour, he commented sympathetically on the leaseholders’ situation saying it should “immediately” be “ameliorated” (or made better).

After the hearing, councillor Mark Williams, Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration and new homes, said: “We still have some way to go, but I am pleased that we now have the opportunity to remake our case and challenge the government’s refusal to permit a CPO.” One leaseholder, Judi Bos, told the News: “After reading the council’s

skeleton arguments before the hearing, I thought we had a problem.

“It’s disappointing. If we had won today the council would have had to negotiate with us for better deals. But this just delays it. Now they have another excuse not to negotiate with us.”

The four blocks in Phase One have already been emptied of 442 tenants and 33 other leaseholders. The plans for regenerating Phase One show some 800 homes will be built instead.

Judge Collins said during yesterday’s hearing that the forthcoming judicial review would

be settled before the end of the legal term, which is understood to be early April.

Southwark will now have until February 22 to present their full case ahead of the judicial review.

Housing campaigners from the 35% Campaign are crowdfunding to pay for a barrister to represent the leaseholders in the upcoming hearing, and have raised £5,800 of their £7,000 target.

Police warning after thrillseeker scales Tower Bridge BERMONDSEY

POLICE HAVE issued a stark warning after a man was caught on video scaling Tower Bridge.

YouTube user CassOnline posted a video online on Saturday, January 21, after bringing traffic to a halt on the bridge when horrified bystanders called the police.

According to his nine-minute-long video blog, the thrillseeker also climbed to the roof of a block of flats in Camberwell and sat with his legs dangling over the edge earlier that day.

He then told viewers he would climb the bridge as he had “wanted to for a long time” and alluded to “plans” for skyscraper The Shard.

The man originally told fans he would scale the bridge if a previous video posted

on his YouTube channel gained 250 likes.

He said to the camera: “We didn't hit it but she's right there. I think we should do it.”

Footage shows the blogger scale a support on the side of the bridge before sitting down at the top to take in the view.

A large crowd gathers below and sirens can be heard as police descend on the bridge. A second video, posted by a bystander and later uploaded by YouTube user Joe Deniable, captured the entire incident unfolding. The crowds lets out a spontaneous cheer when the man finally climbed down after about fifteen minutes.

A spokesman for City Police said the man was not arrested but was detained and interviewed.

The force issued a “strong warning” to others not to copy the stunt over fears they risked “serious harm to themselves”.

The spokesman added: “We were called

to Tower Bridge shortly before 4pm on Saturday, January 21 by concerned members of the public in relation to a man climbing the side of the bridge.

“The man was detained and

interviewed, and an intelligence report was created. No arrests were made.

“While there was no direct harassment or distress caused to the public, we strongly warn the public about copying

this type of behaviour and trespassing onto property. Not only does this have a huge impact on other people who use the property, anyone doing so risks serious harm to themselves.”

We want to breathe easy Mr Mayor

THE MAYOR of London has been called upon by six Southwark schools to clean up the “shameful” air quality in the city.

They are among over one hundred London headteachers who have signed a letter, coordinated by Greenpeace, in which he is asked to take steps to protect youngsters from pollution.

Southwark signatories were Hollydale Primary School, St Joseph’s Catholic Primary, Spa School, Dulwich College Junior School, Snowsfields Primary School and St George’s Cathedral Catholic Primary School.

In the letter, schools ask him to extend the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) beyond Central London and to put shorter, more immediate measures in place, such as making walking and cycling to school safer and easier

Greater London Authority (GLA) data shows that Southwark schools are the worst affected in London for dirty air.

Of 443 London schools which are over the legal limit for Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) - a pollutant from diesel vehicles – 55 are in Southwark. 45 are primary schools and 10 are secondary schools.

St George’s Cathedral Catholic Primary School on Westminster Bridge Road has the highest level of NO2 in

Southwark.

At the event, Khan announced £250,000 funding for “air quality” audits on 50 primary schools in areas which have above-legal levels of NO2.

The audits will highlight ways to dramatically lower emissions and suggest key interventions to reduce exposure.

Sadiq Khan said: ‘Every child deserves the right to breathe clean air in London and it is a shameful fact that

more than 360 of our primary schools are in areas breaching legal pollution limits.”

"Alongside my plans to bring forward the Ultra-Low Emission Zone, and extend it along some of our busiest roads, plus new charges for the dirtiest vehicles and greener bus fleets - these measures will start to deliver real change in the long term. Now it is time for government to get a grip on air quality and match my ambition.”

A TEAM of Southwark police officers have been nominated for a bravery award after rescuing ten people from a raging fire in a block of Bermondsey flats.

PC Ben Davis, PC Tim Andrews, PC Pierce Madden (pictured), PC Jack Wilber and Insp Dan Marshall have been nominated in the Outstanding Bravery of the Year category of the Met Commissioner's Excellence in Total Policing Awards.

At about 2am on Wednesday, November 25, police officers in Southwark responded to a domestic incident in

Grange Road, SE1.

PC Wilber and PC Buck attended and were unexpectedly confronted with a block of flats ablaze with smoke billowing from the entrance.

Two cars had also been set alight at the bottom of the flats and the fire had spread to communal areas, trapping ten residents including a pregnant woman, a frail elderly resident and a baby inside the building.

Officers found a man with apparent mental health issues making repeated threats to kill and dousing petrol near both exits of the building.

He punched PC Wilber before making off but was successfully detained by PC Buck.

Both officers immediately called for London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and police back up.

Insp Marshall arrived along with PC Andrews, PC Davies and PC Madden.

Realising the danger and imminent threat to life, the officers, along with PC Wilbur, took the courageous decision to charge into the blaze.

PC Wilber forced entry with a paving slab while the other officers used their fleece jackets to ward off intense flames and smoke in the hallways before completing a methodical search.

The thick black smoke made this extremely difficult but, despite the risk to their own lives, the officers continued to search every flat within the three-storey

building.

They successfully rescued all ten people trapped inside, including the new baby, and directed them away from the burning cars that were at risk of exploding at any point.

The officers put the safety and wellbeing of the trapped and frightened residents before their own in a remarkable act of bravery.

They are up against three other nominees in the Outstanding Bravery of the Year category. The winner will be presented with their award at a ceremony on February 10. The public vote is open until midnight on Monday, February 6.

Herne Hill’s landmark boozer set to return after years after the flood

HALF MOON Pub devotees will be waiting with bated breath next week, as Fullers look set to announce a re-opening date.

The pub chain had hoped to announce a date this week but are currently waiting for confirmation from utilities companies.

The Herne Hill pub’s been closed since

August 2013, when a burst Thames Water pipe caused a devastating flood.

Since then, it’s been through a lot of changes. Firstly, it moved into the hands of Fullers. Then it changed from a music venue to a restaurant and kitchen in a much-contested planning battle. Finally, it even had its Asset of Community Value Status challenged by Freeholders Dulwich Estates.

However, the pub has weathered the storm and Half Moon enthusiast Peter Barrie is positive about the future.

“The community is in regular dialogue with Fullers about plan for the pub,” said Peter, who spearheaded the campaign to retain the Half Moon’s musical identity.

“All credit to Fullers for that.”

“The Half Moon will be different to what it was in 2013 but there’s a chance for everybody locally to bring the pub back into the heart of the community.”

Managing Director of Fuller’s Inns, Jonathon Swaine, said: “The work carried out by our appointed contractors has progressed well and the pub and

bedrooms are looking fantastic.

“We have also appointed a General Manager – Matt Dutson. Matt has already been meeting members of the local community and I know that he is going to be pivotal in developing the role of The Half Moon going forward. He is a very experienced General Manager and perfect for such an important pub within the Fuller’s estate. I hope that we will be able to issue a more definite opening timescale within the next week or so.”

Pensioner looks for good samaritan bus driver who came to rescue after tumble BERMONDSEY

AN 80-year-old Bermondsey woman is trying to track down a guardian angel bus driver who helped her after a bad fall in Surrey Quays last week.

All Pat Dukes knows about him is that he drives on the P12 route from Honor Oak to Surrey Quays – and that he couldn’t do enough for her after her tumble.

Greener buses hit the streets SOUTHWARK: A new fleet of greener 333 buses has hit the roads between Elephant and Castle and Tooting, Transport for London has announced.

New Euro VI hybrid doubledeckers, operated by Arriva, are part of the TfL’s new Ultra-Low Emission Zone in central London, and emit small quantities of nitrogen oxide (NOx).

Nominations open for new blue plaque

SOUTHWARK: The next Southwark Heritage Blue Plaque will be awarded this year, and the News is collecting nominations.

The fourteen-year-old scheme honours people, places and events which have historical significance and are connected to the borough.

Residents have between now and the beginning of June to submit their nominations to either Southwark Heritage Association or the News.

Suggestions have so far included The Heygate Estate, The Half Moon Pub, and Jacobean playwright and poet Thomas Middleton.

Past winners include Sam King, Henry Cooper, Geoffrey Chaucer and most recently Surrey Docks Farm. There are over 50 plaques installed around the borough.

“If you want history and people to be remembered then the blue plaque scheme is ideal,” said Veronica Alden of Southwark Heritage Association.

“We need people to get out there and say which sites they want to be honoured.”

The Southwark scheme came about in 2003, because many Southwark heritage sites didn’t qualify for the English heritage plaques.

“I’d taken about five steps off the bus and took the pathway through the bushes,” said Pat, who has a visual impairment. “I missed the step up – I couldn’t see the difference in the brickwork because of my sight – and just went down.”

Pat had been on her way to Surrey Quays Shopping Centre to – “funnily” – get a new pair of glasses.

Pat described how passersby flocked to her assistance after the incident on January 17, through which she broke

her little finger and bit through her lip.

The P12 driver, along with another driver, came to lift her to her feet and put her on the bus while she waited for the ambulance.

“I felt embarrassed because all these people were looking at me but the driver told me not to feel bad,” she told the News this week.

While the second driver had to continue on his route, the p12 driver rang the bus garage to get permission to wait with Pat.

He gave her tissues to wipe away her blood and “just chatted” with her to take her mind off things while they waited for the emergency services.

Pat was taken to Guy’s Hospital in an ambulance ten minutes later, where she was met by her son Ian, who lives in Kennington. Now, Pat is determined to find the driver who was “so kind and took the pain away.”

“I would like to meet him again to say thank you. If he drinks, I’d like to buy him a bottle of something,” she said.

Tony Akers, TfL's Head of Bus Operations, said: "We hope the lady is recovering from her fall. We encourage our bus drivers to look out for and after their passengers, and in this case, it's clear the driver went above and beyond this. We applaud the driver's kindness and compassion during a time when this customer needed it most."

DISMAYED RESIDENTS on a Nunhead estate have been slapped with £2,100 bills to fix pot holes, despite asking to have them fixed for a decade.

Twelve leaseholders in Monteagle Way off Consort Road were told in December they would have to pay the whopping charges for the resurfacing work, which will begin on Monday.

But John and Mavis Kibble, both 71, said “there should be a discount for the leaseholders”.

“They’ve not been resurfaced since 1998 and they have only ever done little patch-ups,” John told the News.

“Had they done it properly ten years ago, like we asked, then we would be paying a lot less. But when we asked before, their excuse was always ‘because of costs’.”

Now the residents are facing a tribunal to get the costs down, after their complaint was “barely responded too”.

“I wrote a letter without complaint that was signed by eleven of the leaseholders, and all we had back from them was this innocuous letter that didn’t respond to anything. It was barely worth having.

“We want a proper meeting with the council to discuss this. It’s extreme having to go to a tribunal when we have haven’t been offered a chance to speak to someone executive about this.”

The thought of going to a tribunal is also a daunting one, because they could face paying the council’s legal costs if they lose.

“The resurfacing isn’t going to be paid for out of the service charges we pay, they seem to only go to gardening and what have you,” John said. “The road surface is terrible, it’s virtually down to rubble, or whatever they put down. But it’s a bit patronising for the council to write to us with a bill saying the roads are bad. We live here, so we know they’re bad.

“We’re not complaining about the work needing to be done, it’s the fact that we wouldn’t have [to pay] if the

We did receive a small number of concerns from residents regarding the works which we ensured were responded to in full at the time.”

Window smasher ‘causes damage worth thousands’ BOROUGH

A VANDAL has been menacing local businesses, causing some £20,000 worth of damage by smashing fourteen windows with what is thought to be a catapult.

London South Bank University has been targeted six times, while estate agent Global House Esates, on the junction of Elliott Row and St George’s Road, has had three windows smashed in the space of just a couple of weeks.

Police believe the same person could be involved in each of the incidents, which all took place overnight between January 5 and 22.

King’s confirms place on ‘health tourism’ pilot

PC Steve Woods, dedicated ward officer for Cathedrals Safer Neighbourhood Team, told the News that something like a catapult or slingshot may have been used to smash the windows.

“All we know is that a couple of items were recovered that were projectilebased, such as ball bearings,” he said. “So we think a slingshot or a catapult is the likely cause.

“No one has been hurt; they are not targeting people the incidents always taken place when buildings are closed.”

PC Woods said the windows, which have been boarded up, cost an estimated £1,500 each.

CAMBERWELL: King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (KCHT) has confirmed that it will join Guy’s and St George’s in the NHS pilot scheme against “health tourism”.

The Foundation Trust aims to implement the pilot, which is designed to identify patients who are not eligible for free care, toward the end of Spring.

KCHT, like Guy’s and St Thomas’, already has checks in place to identify which patients need to pay for treatment but participation in the scheme may result in new or extra checks being introduced.

The Trust has confirmed that the pilot will be trialled in “a small number of departments” but is currently unable to confirm which ones.

A KCHT spokesperson has said that one new measure may be requesting patients bring ID to appointments.

The Trust has not yet confirmed how it will manage accident and emergency situations where patients may not be carrying ID. However, it made clear that NHS staff will continue to adhere to guidelines and treat patients with life-threatening injuries or illnesses.

Last year, KCHT wrote off £2.2m in unpaid medical bills from patients not eligible for free care.

A KCHT spokesperson said: “Along with a number of Trusts across the country, we have been asked to participate in the pilot.”

“We already have systems in place to help identify patients who are not eligible for free NHS treatment, and last year (2015/16), the Trust recovered £1.2m from overseas patients.”

“Where an overseas visitor attends the Trust with a life threatening condition or it would be detrimental to their health were they not to be treated.”

‘It’s an overwhelming feeling’ Backing singer on stepping into The Voice limelight

THE PECKHAM mum who dazzled judges and viewers of ITV’s The Voice is no stranger to the limelight – and she can count Eric Clapton as a personal friend, she told the News this week.

Michelle John, 43, has been backing big stars since she was 20 years old and has been singing for Clapton for fourteen years.

“He’s just an absolute legend.

Sometimes I just stand there and gawp at him,” said Michelle.

“I feel like I’m part of the Eric

Clapton family because we’ve been together for so long. My son and Eric’s daughters have grown up together,” she said.

Michelle said that Clapton has been highly supportive of her dreams to become a solo star on The Voice, telling her to “go for it, girl!”

Although Michelle is used to being on stage, her experience on the TV show audition has been a whole new ballgame for her.

“Oh my God, I was petrified!

People think that because I’ve been singing a long time that this is just easy for me but actually, I’ve always sang in a support role,” said the singer, who started off her career supporting artists on Top of the Pops

and ITV’s CD UK. “I’ve never been the main person, so it’s very different. Suddenly, you’re out there by yourself. It’s a really overwhelming feeling.”

Whereas Michelle enjoys her job as a backing vocalist, she felt compelled to take the next step and try to go it along. “I think I just got to a point.

Maybe it was something to do with age or maybe it was something to do with my son being an adult now – but it’s definitely time for me to try,” she said.

Michelle says her son, eighteen, “pretty much grew up” going to concerts with her. He’s also a musician in the making but they’re “on different sides of the spectrum”,

with Michelle’s style being gospelinfluenced and her son preferring hip hop and UK grime.

The singer moved to Bromley when she was eighteen-years-old but regularly returns to Peckham. “If I go down Rye Lane I still see loads of people from my childhood,” she said.

Michelle knows the stakes are high for her as she enters the next round of the talent contest, after being selected by judge will.i.am. “I just think there are no limitations on what could happen. There’d be so many opportunities open to me [if she progresses in the competition]. The most important thing to me is to carve out a career for myself as an artist,” she said.

S THE Assembly Member for Lambeth and Southwark my job is to hold the Mayor of London to account and champion the needs of my constituents.

A lot of this work involves being at City Hall to sit on committees or speak at Mayor’s Question Time. I’m lucky that City Hall falls within my constituency, but I love nothing more than getting out and about to meet the amazing people and organisations that make Southwark what it is.

I recently visited Resolving Chaos, an ambitious organisation that works with people who have multiple needs including mental health problems, homelessness, and substance misuse. Last year they developed the ‘Multiple needs manifesto’ ahead of the Mayoral and London Assembly elections. This highlighted that too often people with complex issues move from one service to another in a costly and unhealthy cycle, and recognised that when the right support services work in partnership the quality of life of people with multiple needs – and the outcomes for communities - can be drastically improved.

One of the projects Resolving Chaos runs is called You First. Funded by a Big Lottery grant, it works in partnership with local councils, the NHS and charities to identify and support high cost service users who experience poor outcomes.

A crucial element of the programme is that each person receives an individual budget to choose to spend on what they need to improve their lives. This can cover immediate needs such as helping them get back on track with food, travel and housing, or it could cover services that will assist their longer term journey to independence.

It was frustrating but heartening to hear from people in difficult situations who had fallen through the gaps between services. I met a man called Dean who spoke about his experience of being admitted at the Maudsley Hospital on three separate occasions, and on his run ins with the police and criminal justice system.

With help and support from the project, he is now helping ex offenders and ex gang members at the St Giles Trust in Camberwell.

The programme has shown it is possible to improve lives and help people get their independence back, and all whilst reducing the amount of public money being spent. This is especially important against a backdrop of government cuts which have pushed social care and mental health services into crisis.

We still have a long way to go when it comes to mental health and multiple needs. One of the first actions we can take together is to mark Time to Talk Day, which takes place next week. It’s a day that brings the nation together to get talking and break the silence: mental health problems affect one in four of us yet people are still afraid to talk about it. For people with mental health problems not being able to talk about it can be one of the worst parts of the illness. So by getting people talking about mental health we can break down stereotypes, improve relationships, aid recovery and take the stigma out of something that affects us all.

Make public all the plans for Green Dale

I READ with some alarm your report about the proposed development at Dulwich Hamlet FC, ‘Hamlet plan could get bigger - with more affordable homes’, Southwark News January 19, 2017.

The article states that "If Southwark Council gives the proposals the go-ahead, developers Greendale Property Development will rebuild the stadium and put more than 155 new homes on the nearby Green Dale Fields".

This goes far beyond the original proposals to build the stadium on Green Dale and should be even more fiercely resisted – the fields are Metropolitan Open Land and

cannot be developed for housing, or indeed for a substantial structure such as a stadium.

We need to see any alterations to the original application as soon as possible so that local people can judge for themselves. Without full disclosure – including substantive matters agreed between the developers and the council which have not yet been made public – it will be impossible to respond properly to these ill-conceived proposals.

At a hearing in the former Southwark Town Hall in Peckham Road some years ago, I heard a Government inspector rule that Green Dale is Metropolitan Open Land and therefore cannot be built on.

It's seven months since Britain voted to leave the European Union. And I'm conscious that while we are hearing a great deal about what Brexit might mean to politicians, few people are asking what it means to those who really matter: the electorate.

It seems their views - indeed, their voices - are being drowned out by the growing cacophony from the Westminster village created by political commentators, analysts,

forecasters and the rest.

I want to create the opportunity for everyone's voices to be heard.

MEET NEW people, learn new skills and gain qualifications with youth charity Sea Cadets, which is encouraging young people and adults to see how they can get involved this February.

We are urging 10- to 17-year-olds seeking adventure and adults interested in volunteering to contact their local unit to find out more about the amazing opportunities available.

Young people at Sea Cadets enjoy a variety of activities, from dinghy sailing to catering, and have the opportunity to experience offshore voyages or to travel abroad to meet cadets from other countries such as Bermuda, Hong Kong and Australia.

Nationally-accredited courses, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, are also available.

But it doesn’t end there. Sea Cadets, an all-inclusive charity, is committed to ensuring young people have a bright future, and with us they develop life skills that set them in good stead

for whatever they choose to do in later life. More than 90 per cent say Sea Cadets has given them higher selfesteem and offered “direction and guidance”.

This would not be possible without our amazing 9,000 volunteers – but we need more like them. You could make more of your free time by showing cadets how to sail, powerboat, kayak or windsurf, we will even teach you how, or by managing finances and budgets or fundraising for your local unit.

Mental health rights!

At the risk of boring people who do not fully understand, I feel I have to explain what several mentally ill health sufferers have said to me.

They have said of the shame they feel having to sit in a busy A&E hospital!

Because their problem is unseen in their head, they sense people look at them, thinking there does not seem much wrong with them.

Unfairly, looking at obviously sick people, they even question themselves if they are entitled to be there.

Dr Mathew Patrick, the main person responsible for not reopening the Maudsley A & E, being a Phychiatrist, must surely be aware of these problems. Bear in mind it should never have been closed in the first place.

Under the Human Rights Act, I think there might be a question as to are the mentally ill being treated unfairly?

Within seconds of the start you knew it was 60s New York with the clothes and the sounds. It was Mad Men with melody, Ray Conniff harmonies, Herb Alpert trumpets - It was music to watch girls go by.

Young Chuck Baxter has ambitions at the insurance firm he works for but no one notices. Not until the middle-aged executives discover he has a bachelor flat that they want to use with their young mistresses in return for a good word towards Chuck’s salary and promotion - The promises, promises in the title.

The ambitious Chuck does get what he wants, in a fashion: with all the good reports put in to HR he is handed the post of Junior Second Administration

Promises Promises is a look at the ‘sexual revolution’ that took place in the 1960s but is really a play about mid-life crises and affluent men taking advantage of younger women with talk of marriage and money when they want nothing but flings - Again, referring back to the (false) promises.

I found it difficult to see the deep love Fran has for Sheldrake so didn’t see the ‘broken heart’ coming, but the show has great music from a band who really pull off that 60s feel, great dancing and excellent singing.

Gabriel Vick holds the production together as Chuck, who is onstage almost all of the time, and because the book is by Neil Simon you expect great lines and great scenes, and this does not disappoint. The Jewish doctor next

Well Fed at Leadbelly

YOU SEE Leadbelly’s large neon sign from a distance. It looks welcoming in this area of Rotherhithe that was largely Ghost Townish after dark until recent months but now has the feel of an emergent, fin de siècle Canary Wharf with its new builds, bright lights vibe, writes Michael Holland...

As you near the door you hear the warming whoosh of the large gas heaters in the seating area and the buzz of the bar beyond the huge windows. Inside, one of the numerous staff quickly take charge of all your wants and needs.

I was with my young ward Haydn,

frozen after a cold tour of the Winter Lights and hungry from having nothing since an earlier packed lunch in school. In no time at all we were seated, warm, watered and provided with menus.

There is a Kids Menu but Haydn is a discerning little chap who was not lured by anything on it, and being quite adventurous around food allowed me to choose starters to share. He did not flinch at the Bubble Coated Chicken with Cauliflower Purée, Charred Cauliflower, Truffle Oil and Coriander Shoots. In fact he claimed the lion’s share of that excellent dish.

He was also quite taken with the Spiced Crab and Lemon Rillete on Sourdough, with Rocket and Samphire. I liked how there was just a hint of citrus so as to not overwhelm the subtlety of the crabmeat. This is a new dish which, seeing as Leadbelly’s has only been open five weeks, is a good sign that the chef is already thinking of new ideas to push the place forward.

As we sipped on our apple juice and Shed Head American Pale Ale, we took in our surroundings.

Leadbelly’s is a big place that cleverly uses its position on the corner of a building to create different areas for different customers. In the restaurant you could still enjoy the music but without the hustle and bustle and chatter of the bar area where people were gathered around drinks and bar snacks.

It has all the signs of a chain restaurant but I happen to know that it’s not, because this is the sister of the historic Mayflower, one of the oldest pubs on the river. Leadbelly’s has been carefully designed to fit in with the modern world. The artwork crosses generations, as does the music played. The staff are hip and informal, and the menu is littered with the keywords that count in today’s world: Fair Trade, Gluten Free, Vegan, Quinoa. Coeliacs and people with allergies are safe here, and that is how it should be.

Our mains arrived. I had the Braised Lamb Shoulder Pie, with Root Vegetables and Mash. It was served up in a bowl looking like a Shepherd’s Pie and was enough to feed a small family. The mash topping was creamy

and the meat below succulent.

Haydn had the Salmon and Smoked Haddock Fishcakes with Creamed Kale and Skinny Fries. He didn’t leave much and what he did leave was merely to leave room for the dessert that he had already decided on.

The lamb pie had filled me up but my intrepid companion was all over his Banana Parfait, Peanut Brittle, Caramelised Banana, Peanut Ice Cream and Puréed Cherry. I don’t know where he put it but put it he did.

His concentrated silence as he went to work told me all I needed to know about how good it was. I could only look on in admiration while enjoying a dessert wine; a beautifully smooth Sauternes.

Leadbelly’s has already made an impact in a notoriously slow month and on this visit I reckon it is totally deserved.

The forgotten poet of Newington who never shied from a jibe

history

IT IS only in recent years that scholars have strung together the story of a daring poet and playwright from Elephant and Castle, who was a contemporary of Shakespeare, writes Owen Sheppard...

Thomas Middleton was born in 1580 to a bricklayer and his wife near Bank, but grew up in a house in Newington Butts: formerly an archers’ training ground, and approximately where you will today find The Castle Centre.

Though his family were originally well-to-do, his fortunes took a left turn at the age of six, with the death of his dad Williams. Middleton then grew up watching his mother Ann’s disastrous second marriage fall into a legal battle over whether the new husband was entitled to William’s inheritance.

Critics have attributed this unromantic first impression of love and family bitterness for Middleton’s tendency towards satire. Nevertheless his talents eventually merited a place at Queen’s College, The University of Oxford.

Despite being an obsessive scholar who “daily rose before the sun, talked and conversed with midnight, killing many a poor farthing-candle”, Thomas cut his time at Oxford short, possibly due to the public outcry that greeted his early works.

Through his unique career he published ten different prose, eight series of poems, fourteen masques (pantomimes of dances and songs) and 23 plays.

His second series of six poems ‘Microcynicon: Six Snarling Satires’ were publicly burnt after they were published on June 4, 1599, by order of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Gary Taylor, the foremost scholar of Middleton, wrote that the Church of England’s clergy viewed the genre as “self–loathing pornography”.

Each of the six poems targeted a particular vice that Middleton saw present in society: cross-dressing; usury (lending money with high interest); prodigality (wasteful and extravagant); pride; cheating; and foolishness.

To Taylor, it appeared early on that Middleton was keen on designing characters that “emblematic sinners” and suggests that he did so vicariously.

In 1601 he courted controversy again, and even a parliamentary

inquiry, when his pamphlet ‘The Penniless of Parliament of Threadbare Poets’ shocked and insulted MPs. Taylor writes that by this time Middleton was writing pamphlets “for an established market of readers” – including people of his own social standing whom he subversively

mocked.

Playwrights had few safe targets after the clergy’s crackdown on satire, so from 1599 to 1602 the so called War of the Theatres became all the rage.

Middleton was partially involved in the war when he took the side of playwright Ben Jonson, who

rivalled John Marston and Thomas Dekker. In the theatres of Newington they designed characters to mock one another as hypocrites or cuckolds. Just think of it as the Jacobean equivalent of a rap battle.

But the short-lived fad for competitive playwriting came to

an end in 1603. In that year, Middleton married Mary Magdalen, and King James I took the throne, but more notoriously it saw the outbreak of the plague, a topic which Middleton wrote about as a metaphor for “social disease”, taking pot shots at social inequality and as a crisis of the social hierarchy.

From there on Middleton really embraced playwriting. Two of his most-acclaimed works were collaborations with Thomas Dekker between 1608 and ’09: The Roaring Girl (biography of the notorious purse-cutting thief Mary Frith), and revenge-tragedy The Bloody Banquet.

Middleton died at his home at Newington in 1627, and was buried on July 4 in St Mary's Churchyard – now a public park.

The original St Mary’s Church was demolished for roadwidening, and its replacement in Kennington Park Road (built in 1876) was destroyed in the Blitz and never rebuilt.

A great deal of what is known of Middleton can be attributed to the work of Taylor, who devoted twenty years to The Collected Works of Thomas Middleton, published by Oxford University Press in 2007.

With John Lavagnino, he led a team of 75 contributors from 12 countries to produce "the Middleton First Folio," designed to establish Middleton’s status as "our other Shakespeare".

Taylor wrote that “as early as 1636” (20 years after Shakespeare’s death and nine years after Middleton’s) the two were people “coupled”.

“Two gentlemen went to see Shakespeare’s ‘Pericles’; one laughed and the other cried. Later, they went to see Middleton’s ‘Mayor of Queenborough’; the first cried and the second laughed,” Taylor wrote.

DRAFT COMMUNITY INFRASTRUCTURE LEVY (CIL) CHARGING SCHEDULE AND REGULATION 123 LIST

The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) is a levy that local authorities can choose to charge on new developments in their area. The money can be used to support new development by funding strategic infrastructure that the council, local community and neighbourhoods want.

Southwark is a CIL charging authority under the Planning Act 2008 and Community Infrastructure Levy Regulations 2010 (as amended). Southwark is proposing to revise its charging schedule which sets out the charging rate(s) (per square metre of new floorspace) to be levied on new development in the borough. These rates need to be supported by evidence including a study of the economic viability of new development and an Infrastructure Plan which sets out Southwark’s infrastructure needs over the next 15 years.

We consulted on a ‘Preliminary’ draft CIL Charging Schedule in 2016. We are now at the second stage of preparation and are consulting on the Draft CIL Charging Schedule. Alongside this we are also consulting on a revised Regulation 123 List which is intended for adoption at the same time as the revised charging schedule.

Following this second round of consultation we will submit the Draft CIL Charging Schedule and all of the representations received during the consultation to an independent Examiner. The Draft CIL Charging Schedule will then be subject to an Examination in Public held by the independent Examiner during Summer 2017.

How to make a representation on the Draft CIL Charging Schedule (CIL Regulation 16 (2)) and Regulation 123 List

The draft CIL Charging Schedule and Regulation 123 List will be published on 30 January 2017 and will be available for consultation for a period of six weeks. All comments must be received by 5pm Monday 13 March 2017.

BERMONDSEY FIGHTER Chris ‘2Slick’ Kongo admits he must “impress to get a good deal” when he makes his television debut next month.

In just his third professional fight, Kongo will feature on the undercard of Chris Eubank Jr’s IBO world super-middleweight title showdown with Renold Quinlan at the Olympia in Kensington on February 4.

Kongo has won both of his previous bouts since turning professional after he missed out on Team GB selection for the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Twenty-four-year-old welterweight Kongo, who trains at Miguel’s Boxing Gym in Brixton, is also using that disappointment as motivation as he looks to catch the eye of promoters next month.

“I got over it once I knew I was turning pro,” he said. “It’s a new chapter for me in my career. The only way to get over it was to turn pro at the time and go on and express my anger and frustration in the ring.

“It’s on ITV and I have to impress to get a good deal. I’m not signed to anyone at the moment so I’m looking to impress and get some promoters knocking on my door from this fight.

“From my debut I made some money because I sold about 260 tickets. I did quite well.

“What’s helped me so far are my sponsors. They’ve been important in my career.

“There will always be pressure on an up-and-coming fighter, pressure to get to the big stage. This game is not like the amateur game, it’s not

Kongo also knows it’s more than just ability that gets a fighter noticed.

New venture for Haye

DAVID HAYE has launched a new boxing promotions company.

The Bermondsey fighter’s Haye Promotions and Richard Schaefer’s Ringstar will be known as Haymaker Ringstar, with the pair hoping to muscle in on the UK boxing promotion terrain and negotiate a deal with a major TV broadcaster.

IN THE end, Millwall boss Neil Harris will have reflected that a point was not a bad result to take away from Valley Parade given the pressure his side found themselves under late on, but it wasn’t the three that looked on the cards when Lee Gregory shot Millwall in front in the 50th minute.

That was Gregory’s third goal against Bradford in three games and again demonstrated his ability to somehow get away a shot when it looks like defenders have him covered.

But immediately Bradford piled on the pressure and got their equaliser ten minutes later through James Meredith’s back-post finish that was almost kept out

by Shaun Cummings.

But for all the satisfaction there will be at extending their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions, Millwall players will realise that they can’t afford to drop many points against sides above them in the league, especially from a winning position.

In most circumstances a point at a stadium that hasn’t seen a League One loss since last May – to Millwall in the first leg of the play-off semi-final – would be considered one gained. But it still leaves the Lions five points off the top six.

It also means the chances of automatic promotion are slowly slipping away if not completely dead. Millwall were ten points off the top two when they

defeated Gillingham at The Den on December 30, but three successive league draws has seen that margin stretch to fifteen points.

The bookies have the Lions at 25/1 to finish in the top two and they seem a bit on the generous side, particularly when you examine Millwall’s record against the sides currently above them in the table.

In eleven games this season against the top eight, Millwall have won just two – both at home against Sheffield United and Fleetwood. In those eleven fixtures they have scored ten goals and conceded 23. It’s a record they will have to pivot the other way against those sides if they are to make sure they are in the play-off places by the end of April.

Another worry for Millwall is that just when Shaun Hutchinson had put a run of games together he is injured again, this time with a small tear in his calf.

With Hutchinson partnering Byron Webster in the middle of the Lions’ defence they had kept three clean sheets in six games, and a first away from home in the league this season, at Charlton the previous weekend.

Hutchinson’s absence meant Jake Cooper was given a debut despite only finalising his move to the club from Reading late on Thursday afternoon. He wouldn’t have had much of a chance to familiarise himself with his new teammates but on the evidence of this performance he will have plenty to offer for the rest of the season. Despite being 6ft 7ins tall he has ability on the ball, at one point flicking it over an opponent

before playing a pass forward. And he was also a threat from attacking setpieces, twice going close to scoring on his debut in the first half, first just missing Shaun Williams’ corner to the back post and then powering a header towards goal that was saved before Gregory hit the crossbar from the rebound.

There were lots of chances for both sides in the 90 minutes, the earliest opening falling to Steve Morison who went close with a volley in the fourth minute.

Bradford started with a 3-5-2 formation and the most dangerous player on the pitch in the first half was Mark Marshall, playing just off striker Alex Jones.

Marshall popped up everywhere and the away side struggled to find a way to pick him up. He moved across the pitch in front of Millwall’s defence and behind their midfield. Bradford were shooting whenever they had the opportunity and Archer had to save from Marshall and Josh Cullen.

But Millwall are generally comfortable absorbing pressure before springing a counterattack, and Bradford’s right-wing back, Tony McMahon, produced an excellent tackle as Aiden O’Brien was about to shoot after Morison had played him through in the box.

Bradford also hit the woodwork just before the break, substitute Timothee Dieng – who had come on for the injured Matthew Kilgallon – beating Archer but seeing his header bounce off the top of the crossbar from Meredith’s cross.

Millwall took the lead five minutes into

the second half, Gregory seeming to spend an age digging the ball out from under his feet after O’Brien had flicked Cummings’ cross to him. Surrounded by defenders, Gregory got a sliver of an opening and shot low past Colin Doyle.

Bradford’s response was impressive, and it was no surprise when they equalised. It was Marshall who set it up, crossing low just out of the reach of Archer to the back post where Meredith applied the finish.

That fired the home fans in an impressive crowd of almost 18,000 – 401 in the away end – and the momentum was with Bradford as they sought a winner. Cullen saw another long-range effort saved before Marshall weaved through a number of Millwall players and seemed set to score but sent his shot curling just wide of the far post.

“I’d spoken on record about defensive cover and bringing in competition for places at the back,” Harris said. “There’s no doubt during various periods during the first half of the season we were short because of various injuries.

“We addressed that with Jake this month, even though we have been defensively sound in the last six or

seven games.

“Also, attacking-wise I felt we needed another threat going forward. Obviously we’ve had Aiden and Fred in wide areas for long periods, though both are possibly natural forwards. Both have played wide and played really well.

“We’ve got a lot of games in February and March and we can’t rely on all the same forward players. So having the opportunity to be able to push Aiden and Fred higher up the park will certainly

“He’ll add really good competition and balance to our squad.

“We’ll see how it goes. It’s an opportunity for us to take a look at Jake, it’s his first loan move away from Reading, his hometown club.

“It’s an opportunity for him to look at us also. He hasn’t played a lot of football at Reading this season but has been involved in almost every match-day squad.

“So there’s certainly something there that they like him, but who knows what the future holds.

“It’s early days but he’s had a god start to his Millwall career last Saturday.”

With Shaun Hutchinson injured, Cooper stepped into a Millwall side at Bradford that had been unchanged for six games.

Cooper had just one training session to get used to his new team-mates, but he took it all in his stride and twice came close to scoring from Shaun Williams corners in the first half.

“That’s what I came here for, to play, games, and there was a chance to get into the team immediately,” Cooper said. “The gaffer showed faith in me and I was delighted, it was great for me to make my debut straightaway.

“That’s what as professional footballers we have to do. I wanted to come here and help this club out. I had to show the gaffer I can play in this team.

“I was gutted to hit the crossbar but I always like to be a threat from set-plays.

That’s what I take into every game.

“I’ve settled in well. We did a few setplays on Friday and I was ready for what came along.

“It was a difficult game but we felt like we could have come away with a bit more. We want to take that into next week and keep the unbeaten run going.”

Cooper is eligible to play for Millwall against Watford in the FA Cup on Sunday.

“It’s a big game this weekend,” he said. “We’re seven unbeaten now and we go into this weekend with a lot of confidence.

“I saw Millwall were doing well in the cup and I wasn’t involved in it with Reading. So it’s a good opportunity now.”

JED WALLACE revealed he ignored interest from the Championship and from one of Millwall’s close rivals in League One.

Wallace and Jake Cooper joined Millwall on loan from Wolves and Reading on the same day last week, with both making their first appearances against Bradford two days later.

Millwall weren’t the only club in the hunt to sign Wallace, who revealed Charlton Athletic were also interested.

“I had a few options, it was a long buildup,” Wallace said. “There were a couple in the Champ, there was another one close to here, no names but they play in red!

“There was another one higher up in this league as well but in football you can’t beat the consistency and familiarity that I’ve got here.

“People know what I’m about and I know what this place is about. It’s a good fit for me and I want to be part of a successful team. We’re very, very close to being a really good team.”

Wallace played fourteen times on loan at Millwall last season before being recalled by Kenny Jackett who put him straight into the Wolves side.

But Jackett left the club in July with Walter Zenga taking over, and Wallace’s first-team chances were limited further when Zenga was replaced with current boss Paul Lambert.

Reading-born Wallace said a move back to Millwall became a possibility last month, and he revealed his relationship with Lions boss Neil Harris was a key factor in his decision to join the club for a

second time.

“In December I realised I wasn’t going to be involved with Wolves,” Wallace said. “One thing I have learned at Wolves is that you can’t take your relationship with a manager for granted. I had a good one with Kenny and he trusted me. The manager here trusts me and you can’t take that for granted.

“People are happy to sit at certain clubs.

Wolves are a massive club and it would have been easy for me to sit there and see if anything changed. But that’s not the reason I wanted to become a footballer. I wanted to play football.

There’s no point me being three hours away from home and not playing. It’s the same as last season really. “ T h e opportunity to come back to a club where I know I’m going to play and will be pushing at the right end of the table was a no-brainer.”

Wallace’s first game back at Wolves last season was at table-toppers Burnley, when the winger started on the right of midfield alongside another ex-Lions loanee, George Saville.

But an injury in that game set him back, and he feels that and other issues involving new owners and a manager wanting to bring in their own players counted against his chances at the club.

“I’ll probably look back at my Wolves career and think my time to really establish myself and make an impact was probably when I went back from here,”

“In my opinion there are a lot of things that happened there that shouldn’t have happened. We finished thirteenth last year under Kenny with a lot of injuries, a lot of key players not being involved. “If he had

Wallace has played just one 90-minute competitive fixture this season, but hopes to put a run of games together for Millwall.

“It was the same selection for six games in a row here and you can see the consistency come through,” he said. “It was the same last year, you could almost pick the team and the subs that were going to happen.

“The manager showed it was important that there were eighteen or nineteen players that can make an impact. Me and Coops now are another two. You look to your left and right and know there are people that can fill in positions. We’re looking to kick on now and get into the Championship if we can.”

There are various things going on behind the scenes to do that. If I can get more time on Sunday I can hit the ground running.

“I’m quite a fit lad but it’s about getting a feel of the ball, you can’t replicate that on the training pitch, no matter how hard you train. You need eleven v eleven games. Hopefully I’ll be ready to go on Sunday.”

Wallace kept an eye on Millwall’s progress this season, and feels despite some bad results earlier in the campaign they are as good as anyone in the league.

He said: “They got themselves into a really good position and then lost four in a row, it went a little bit crazy. You always follow clubs when you’re with another club that you think, ‘Potentially I could be there in three or four years’.

“I’ve followed Millwall for a couple of years and they always seem to be the same, a bit of a slow start and then come strong as the season goes on, like last year. We’re hoping to replicate that this season.

“If we can keep everyone fit, especially the front two, we can beat anyone in this division.”

MILLWALL will be without Shaun Hutchinson for their fourthround FA Cup clash with Watford at Then Den on Sunday.

Hutchinson damaged his calf against Charlton and it was discovered before last weekend’s 1-1 draw at Bradford that he had suffered a small tear that will keep him out for two to three weeks.

On-loan Reading defender Jake Cooper made a commanding debut at Valley Parade and is likely to continue alongside Byron Webster in the centre of Millwall’s defence against the Hornets.

The fixture is the first of nine in 32 days in a hectic period that could decide whether Millwall are in the top-six reckoning, as well as continuing their adventure on this competition.

Watford beat Burton Albion 2-0 in the third round with a team featuring five changes from their previous league meeting, a 2-0 loss at Stoke City.

Watford are fourteenth in the Premier League and with preserving that status their financial priority, boss Walter Mazzarri could again rest a number of first-team players, particularly given they have a trip to Arsenal looming just over 48 hours after their Den clash.

There was speculation Mazzarri’s job was under pressure after that Stoke defeat, but Watford are unbeaten in three games and last weekend forced Bournemouth to come from behind to grab a point in a 2-2 draw at Dean Court.

Harris admitted it will be difficult to predict Watford’s starting XI and their formation, but isn’t doubting their desire to avoid falling to the same fate as AFC Bournemouth in the last round at The Den. “I think Watford will be looking to come and win the game, that’s for sure,” Harris said. “Certainly the manager will be picking a team to do that.

NEW MILLWALL centreback Jake Cooper said Millwall were his “first choice” before he made the move to south London from Reading last week.

A number of clubs were reportedly interested in 21-yearold Cooper, and Lions manager Neil Harris went to watch him in action against Everton U23s last Monday week.

A loan deal was agreed until the end of the season between the clubs, with Cooper revealing he didn’t speak to Royals manager Japp Stam before travelling to London on Thursday afternoon to sign for Millwall.

“I heard a few things last week and then Reading signed a new defender,” Cooper explained.

“After that I spoke with Reading and it was all set for me to go.

“Millwall was my first choice and I’m glad to have made this work. They’re fighting to get promotion and I want to be involved in a team that gets promoted.

“To get promoted out of this league with Millwall would be brilliant.

“I didn’t speak to (Harris) at all, it was all left to the clubs. I didn’t know what was going on at Reading. I’ve had no real contact with Japp Stam, it was all done by the directors but I’m here now and I want to get this football club back to where it belongs.

“I spoke with Reading and the next day I was here with Millwall.

That’s what football is about, you have to be ready for a move during the transfer window and I’m ready to do a job.

“It’s not that far from my home

so I’m happy to be here. It’s been very good, the lads have been great, and the manager and coaches. I’m loving at the moment and I want to keep going and winning games.

“I have to grow up and get used to these situations so I’m more than happy to be here.

Millwall could try to sign Cooper on a permanent deal in the summer, but the youngster isn’t looking that far ahead just yet.

“It’s too early to think about that,” he said. “We’ll have to see what happens between now and the end of the season and take it from there.”

Wallace last week signed on loan for the Lions from Wolves for the second time in a year and made his debut as a second-half substitute at Bradford last weekend.

Unlike last season, when he went back to Wolves in March, he will be part of Millwall’s squad for the rest of the season.

He could make his first start in his second spell with the club in the fourth round of the FA Cup against Watford this Sunday.

Millwall manager Neil Harris has made no secret of his desire to sign Wallace, 22, from Wolves in the summer, and Wallace revealed that nearly happened in January.

“To be honest, I thought there was a big chance of getting it done in this window but for various reasons that I won’t talk about it didn’t get done,” he said.

“For me it’s just about playing, whether you’ve got five years left on your contract or one month left on your contract.

“Every game is a shop window, that’s the nature of football. I’ll do my absolute best and re-evaluate in the summer.

“In an absolutely ideal world Millwall will be in the Championship and I’ll be playing for Millwall in the Championship next season.

“Football isn’t always as easy as you hope it’s going to be but I’ve always said as long as I’m playing football and improving then I’m happy.”
