Join together to help Queen’s Road Centre

INALLY THE council have admitted that they plan to build new offices on the site of the Queen’s Road Day Centre.

The uncertainty and the council’s inability to provide a clear answer on what the future holds for the users of this centre is maddening to watch.

Maddening, that after months of speculation the council have now said that it is their preferred site for new offices - why could they not tell the users earlier?

Maddening, because it’s still unclear whether another site will be found for the day centre, perhaps because they fear by listing other sites, there will be a backlash from people occupying those sites.

And maddening because the council are in actual fact trying to use the sites for the common good, but to date they appear to have failed to work with the people they are trying to help.

The offices are in the council’s own words to house those who work with the most vulnerable people in our borough. Currently housed in offices in Sumner Road, this site is earmarked for desperately needed council housing. The irony cannot be missed.

Desperately needed council housing will displace officers, who work with the borough’s most vulnerable, who will in turn effectively evict those very vulnerable people attending the day centre.

Surely, this is not Southwark Council’s plan?

After years of council cuts - with councillors and officers struggling to balance the books, while trying to address escalating problems in housing and adult social care in particular – most local residents must have every sympathy with the predicament faced. So the answer is to be open about the options available, perhaps more open than they have ever been.

For the users and families of this day centre the ten-year stay of execution given to the Riverside Day Centre in Rotherhithe would be welcomed. The uncertainty is crippling. For them routine is everything. Not knowing what the plan is, and living under a 30-day eviction notice causes such heartache.

Users and families at Queen’s Road will need to look at what options they have together and individually. Clearly the council are not in the businesses of stripping resources from the most vulnerable, the opposite it is true. These users and their families, and the community, can join them in a larger struggle, explaining what immediate practical action can be taken – even if that is fundraising. And tell them the options.

This week Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion, vowed that no final decisions could be taken about this “until after the council has consulted those affected”, saying it would happen shortly, and vowing that “whatever changes do happen in the future... service users’ needs will continue to be met.”

UNISON recently wrote to this paper arguing that if the council was building a new complex on Queen’s Road it should provide a new Day Centre at the same time. They said both of these developments would be commercial for profit opportunities, and sharing this profit with the community wouldn’t “sentence a valuable and vulnerable part of the community to imprisonment in their own homes.”

Could this happen? If it can then let’s work towards this together.

Young Millwall fan wins chance to commentate at Wembley

A YOUNG Millwall fan could be the next big name in the sports commentating world after beating dozens of other children in a competition.

Akai Coleman, aged twelve, has won himself a pitch-side spot to commentate at the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Monday, May 29.

The youngster beat 117 other entrants in the competition run by Nickelodeon as part of their weekly English Football League programme, Nick Kicks, on Nicktoons.

For his video entry, Akai chose to commentate on Millwall player Aiden O’Brien’s goals against Scunthorpe and AFC Wimbledon, and Steve Morison’s strikes in wins over Chesterfield and Oxford United.

The News reported last week that he had made it into the final of the competition, and was waiting to hear who had won.

He said he was relieved when his mum, Adede, broke the news to him after she pretended he was in trouble and had to spend the bank holiday Monday in detention at school.

“At that moment I felt very happy and proud of myself for this achievement,” said Akai, who lives

“I love football, commentating, punditry, journalism, and acting, so this is a very proud achievement for

Saturday “electrifying” and that he hoped it would be the same when he commentated on Huddersfield v Reading on Monday.

“I just loved it there,” he said. “All the fans were going wild and having a great time and hopefully it’s the same for Huddersfield v Reading, because I’m going to be in my suit commentating.

“I’m just really excited for it and I

hope everyone tunes into the match and watches me commentating.

“At the end I will be commentating on some highlights as well and interviewing some Huddersfield or Reading players. I want to say a massive thank you to Nickelodeon for giving me this opportunity and to Southwark News for interviewing me and putting me in the newspaper for everyone to see.”

THE NUMBER of council housing fraud cases passing through Southwark Council has fallen dramatically since 2014, a report has shown.

FLAGS FLEW at half mast and the council and Southwark Cathedral fell silent this week, to remember those caught up in the harrowing Manchester Arena terror attack.

Council staff and Southwark Cathedral paused for a moment of silence and reflection on Tuesday morning to remember those killed and injured in Monday’s terror attack.

The attack at the end of US singer Ariana Grande’s concert claimed the lives of 22 people, including children, and left at least 59 injured.

Speaking in the wake of the attack, Southwark Council leader Peter John said the fact the victims were innocent children made it “all the more difficult to bear”.

“Each time there is an attack on our country and our freedom we resolve to stand tall and united, and today is no exception, but first we stop and remember those who tragically lost their lives or were injured in last night’s horrendous attack in Manchester,” he said.

“That the victims were, on the whole, children, young people and families, enjoying what should have

been a fun evening out, makes the attack all the more difficult to bear.

“Our hearts go out to those affected, but we will, as a country, get through this together.

“Understandably Southwark residents will be feeling worried, and I would urge you all to remain vigilant and report anything unusual to the police. And on behalf of all of Southwark, I would like to say to the people of Manchester, our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with you.”

Police stations across Southwark flew their flags at half-mast in memory of all those affected by the

“atrocities” in Manchester.

Police patrols were stepped up across London, with increased presence of both armed and unarmed officers on Tuesday, which the Met said would continue for “as long as needed” to reassure people.

The Met is working with the organisers of events planned across the Capital this weekend to provide them with the latest protective security advice.

The public is asked to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviour to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline on 0800 789 321 or to call 999.

A “special investigation” team within Southwark Council’s Housing and Modernisation Department detected 509 suspect housing-tenancy cases between April 2016 and March 2017, compared with 1,751 in 2014-15.

Investigations in 2016-17 resulted in 89 council homes being seized. 173 applicants were taken off the council’s housing waiting list, while 106 applicants were classed as “bona fide”.

The work carried out by Southwark’s two verification officers, within antifraud services, also saw 22 right-to-buy applications stopped or cancelled.

The council received 1,005 referrals from members of public via its website, by email, and its fraud hotline in 201617. This contributed to 77 “successful sanctions” among the 509 suspect cases that were detected.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said: “The council has an obligation to ensure all applicants on our housing waiting list are genuinely in need and don’t have other properties, mortgages or undeclared changes to their circumstances, for example.

“The council has focused on key areas which will prevent, reduce and detect fraud in order to safeguard and recover

public assets – taking the matter to court where necessary.

“A great deal of work has gone into improving the way the council verifies identities, cross references information and raises awareness of fraud to members of staff and the public.

“Right to Buy applicants are reminded of the gravity of fraud and money laundering. These factors, combined with the push for prosecution for housing fraud, have attributed to a reduction in fraud in all areas.”

The investigators’ scope was to look at unlawful subletting, non-occupation of council homes, succession, assignment, mutual exchange of homes between tenants, and right-to-buy.

Southwark has carried out annual fraud investigations of its housing department since 2014, after new government legislation.

The report on the council’s fraud investigations was carried out by auditing firms BDO and RSM Tenon, and was presented within the agenda for council’s Audit, governance and standards committee, which met on May 9.

The most prolific case to emerge from Southwark’s investigations came last year, when one of its former housing officers was handed a five year jail sentence for handling 24 bogus cases between 2003 and 2005. Five of the officer’s clients were also successfully convicted for offences such as illegal subletting of their council homes, and making applications using fraudulent birth certificates for children they didn’t.

Cyclist and motorbike in collision ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: A cyclist was involved in a collision with a motorcyclist yesterday morning.

The Met and London Ambulance Service were called at 6.45am at the junction of Oswin Street and St

George’s Road.

The cyclist was said to have suffered non-life threatening injuries to their arm. Roads during the rush hour traffic were partially blocked by the incident, but cleared by mid morning.

A PECKHAM day centre for adults could be turned into council offices, it has been confirmed.

Last month, the News reported that the council could be eyeing up the Camden Society’s Queen’s Road day centre for council offices after a report titled ‘Queen’s Road 4’ emerged.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion, has now confirmed to the News that the council’s preferred option is to turn the Queen’s Road site into offices for staff caring for vulnerable children and young people.

However, he was clear that no final decision would be made until the council had consulted with everyone who would be affected.

“The council’s preferred option for the Queen’s Road site is its redevelopment for use by Southwark staff caring for some of the borough’s most vulnerable children and young people,” he said.

“This is because the building is no longer fit for purpose as a day centre and would require significant investment to bring it up to standard.

“Given the current financial climate the council does not believe it can justify this level of expenditure when it already has a modern and purpose-built centre for people with disabilities at the Southwark Resource Centre.

“However, no final decisions can be taken about this until after the council has consulted those affected by the proposals to listen to their views.

“This will happen shortly, and we do want to reassure people that whatever changes do happen in the future that service users’ needs will continue to be met.”

In March, the News revealed that the

Queen’s Road day centre, in Peckham, and the Riverside day centre, in Bermondsey, both faced closure after the Camden Society was served notice on its leases by the council, who own the buildings.

The Camden Society – a registered charity – was given until June to leave the Queen’s Road building, and until November to leave Riverside.

But in a dramatic U-turn, the council recently offered the charity leases for both centres. A ten-year lease was offered for Riverside, while a tenancy at will was put forward for Queen’s Road.

Sinem Quashie, co-chair of the Camden Society Parents’ and Carers’ Association, said she welcomed the offer of a ten-year lease for Riverside – but said it was “not a long-term solution”.

The mother, whose son uses the Riverside centre’s services, also voiced concerns over the deal offered for Queen’s Road – if it isn’t closed and redeveloped for council offices.

“On the appearance of it, the ten-year lease is good but it’s not when you consider that Bede [a Southwark charity] has got a 125-year lease,” she said.

“The tenancy at will means that they [the Camden Society] can get a 30-day notice and we will have 30 days to get out of Queen’s Road.

“Southwark Council once again are able to serve a 30 days’ notice of eviction which would put all the vulnerable attending adults, their families and the Camden Society in the same unacceptable situation.”

In response, Cllr Livingstone said he believed the ten-year lease would offer Riverside a long-term commitment.

“We believe we’ve made a very attractive offer to Camden Society, and that a ten-year lease for Riverside would amount to a long-term commitment by the council to the charity,” he said.

Results of review into Elephant road redesign put off until September ELEPHANT AND CASTLE

THE RESULTS of a review of the £25m Elephant and Castle junction redesign by Transport for London will not be published until September, a spokesman has said.

The public had previously been told that findings from the ‘postimplementation review’, into how the new layout had affected traffic, would be presented by May 2017.

It was announced earlier in the year at a Walworth, Borough and Bankside Community Council meeting that a review of the huge redesign would be carried out in April.

A TfL spokesman has since told the News: “We want to do a twelvemonth review, but as there is normally a three-fourth month lag in stats being turned around from the police to us (which means that to actually do a twelve-month review with twelve months of stats), the report can only be produced around September.”

Following completion of the junction in spring last year, residents in Harper Road have complained of increased traffic from drivers using the residential street as an alternative to the junction.

Pensioner Johanna Hedger died in a collision with a lorry on February 5 last year, at the junction with the New Kent Road.

Charlie Cooper, a 21-year-old motorcyclist, was also killed following a collision at the north-side of the junction on March 16, 2016.

An inquest into Mr Cooper’s death, held in March, heard that the “confusing” layout may have been a contributing factor Mr Cooper’s death.

The inquest also heard evidence from TfL’s senior programme sponsor, Thomas Holmes, whose team oversaw the junction redesign.

Mr Holmes said: “I think the junction is as good as we can get it.

“There is very little more we can do with this layout in this configuration to affect users’ behaviour. I believe any further changes could be detrimental.”

But he added “there are plans to introduce” 20mph speed limits at the junction.

Nail bar owner tells of shock after car smashes into shop

A CAMBERWELL nail bar owner has told of her shock after a car smashed into her shop last week injuring a child.

The collision, which is thought to have involved a learner driver, happened at Elegant Nails Eye Lash Eye Brow shop, at the junction between Camberwell Road and Albany Road on Thursday, May 18 at 5pm.

Shop owner Hguyen Thithu Huong, 44, said a lot of damage had been caused as a result. The windows of the shop and adjacent shop were destroyed and had to be boarded up and there had been damage to the interior of the shop.

She said a child walking past at the time of the incident was forced to flee into the shop as it happened.

After the crash Hguyen immediately called her friend Olayinka Anifowoshe, 55, who rushed to the scene to help.

She said: “There’s a lot of damage and damage to the nail equipment.”

Olayinka explained they had spoken to the landlord and would be speaking to the insurance company to get the damage fixed as quickly as possible. She said: “It’s going to affect business; they have already lost lots of customers today as people walking past will think they are closed.”

Police confirmed that a child aged twelve had been taken to hospital with facial injuries which were not “not life threatening.”

FRESH PLANS to build flats and commercial space on the site of the former Clipper Pub in Rotherhithe have been submitted to the council.

Lighthall Homes has submitted revised plans for the site of the former Rotherhithe Street boozer after proposals submitted last year were refused by the council over issues of “daylight” and “outlook”.

Norton Mayfield Architects has drawn up fresh plans for a commercial unit and six flats which aim to address the issues raised by the planning officer.

The architect firm has focused on “reducing the impact of the massing on the living conditions of the occupants of Timbrell Place with particular reference to

daylight and outlook” in the new plans.

“The overall effect of these changes is to increase the sense of space between the proposals and the flats opposite, contributing to a further improvement in the outlook,” it said in a planning statement.

The proposal is for a commercial space over basement and ground level, with six flats over the first, second and third storeys.

Four of the flats would have two bedrooms to occupy four people, while two of the flats would have two bedrooms to occupy three people.

The four-storey building is expected to have a footprint similar to that of the existing pub.

Manze’s signs deal with Deliveroo so you can get a fresh meal delivered to your door

MANZE’S PIE and mash lovers can now have their favourite order delivered straight to their dinner table or desk in Bermondsey.

The popular pie and mash shop in Tower Bridge Road recently signed a contract with delivery giant Deliveroo, which guarantees to deliver orders piping hot in the area.

Manze’s co-owner Rick Poole told the News in January that the Bermondsey branch was struggling to keep up with the ever-changing times. Mr Poole, who co-owns the chain with his brothers Geoff and Graham, told of how he had just pulled out of a contract with delivery company UberEATS after it sparked

backlash from some customers over claims it could steal business from black cab drivers.

He had sought a contract with Deliveroo, but unfortunately they weren’t taking on any more businesses in the area at the time.

Fortunately for Manze’s, Deliveroo has now taken on the extra business, and although Mr Poole said he didn’t think the Deliveroo orders would play a “major part” in business, he did say business was “picking up” and “every little helps”.

“We were expecting mainly office workers to use them but I think we are getting a few domestic people and locals,” he said.

“For one reason or another they might not be able to get out of the house and can’t make it to the shop such as being disabled.

“We already did a chilled delivery service but this will be a hot service.

Someone put on Facebook the other day how pleased she was because within twenty minutes it [her order] was on her desk.”

The Deliveroo riders are delivering within a kilometre or so of the Tower Bridge Road shop during normal opening hours.

Mr Poole said they aim to deliver an order within ten minutes of picking it up from the shop.

And the shop owner added that there could also be plans to introduce a Deliveroo service at the Peckham branch of Manze’s if all went well at Tower Bridge Road.

Owners thank loyal customers, but are looking forward to rest after years working at local store

A FAMILY that has run an East Dulwich newsagents for By Owen40 Sheppard nearly years are due to sell their last newspapers on owen@southwarknews.co.uk Saturday.

Ajay and Hetal Patel’s family have been at K&V Food&Wine since 1978, and are the second generation to have run the Grove Vale store.

The pair became such a wellknown part of the community that they were recognised abroad by locals on holiday.

Speaking to the News this week, Ajay, 50, told of the times he was spotted on a plane on the way to New York and at a cricket match in India. He also went on to thank loyal customers for their support over the years his family has run the

store. Ajay highlighted one of his favourite memories of working at the shop as getting their first Lottery machine in 2007 - because it took them fourteen years to get one.

When asked if they expected to be running the shop for so long, despite the rise of supermarkets and their ‘local stores’, the pair joked: “Put it this way, we’ve gone through three recessions, two riots and we still survived!”

As for the future, while the Patels are not retiring they have confirmed the shop will be staying open with a new owner - and that they will be relieved to not have to work ‘unsociable hours’ seven days a week.

“We’re going to take two years’ rest and take it from there. We only live round the corner,” Ajay explained.

LABOUR CANDIDATE Neil Coyle has reported Lib Dem rival Simon Hughes to the police over a ‘false statement’ printed in election leaflets.

SOUTHWARK’S FEMINIST Library is hoping to raise £50,000 to move into new premises next year.

Mr Coyle, who unseated Mr Hughes in Bermondsey and Old Southwark in the 2015 general election, has accused the former Lib Dem deputy leader of making a false statement against him which he says was also libellous.

It comes after leaflets, made to look like a newspaper article, were distributed around the constituency with claims Mr Coyle is being investigated by the chief whip for “allegedly being abusive to members of Labour party staff”.

Mr Coyle told the News the statement was “completely untrue” and that there was never an investigation.

“They never said there was an investigation – Nick Brown [Labour chief whip] has clarified this,” he said.

“It’s incredibly disappointing to have to take this course of action; it is an offence.”

He wrote to Mr Hughes asking him to “desist from delivering the defamatory material”, to issue a “full agreed apology” to all those who received the leaflet, and to advise what level of compensation he was willing to make.

“I consider that making this statement is in breach of the Representation of the People Act, section 106 as well as libellous,” he said in his letter.

A Lib Dem spokesperson told the News Mr Coyle was “trying to deny things that have been widely reported”.

“This is campaign misinformation,” they said. “Given the positive response Simon Hughes is getting on the doorsteps it is no surprise that Labour has pressed the panic button.

“Simon Hughes has already shown himself to be a hardworking, kind and compassionate MP and re-electing him will once again ensure the constituency has effective representation.”

The 40-year-old library, located in Westminster Bridge Road, was faced with eviction in February last year after the council asked for an annual market rent of £18,000 along with a £12,000 annual service charge.

A petition attracted thousands of supporters calling for a “rent increase” to be dropped – however, it was revealed that the library had not been obliged to pay rent since moving in, and had only been asked to pay a service charge.

The council extended the library’s lease as a gesture of good will and has allowed it to remain at the premises until it moves into is new home in spring next year.

The library is expected to move into the ‘Livesey Exchange’ – a new community/maker centre in Peckham made up of 60 transformed empty garages.

Neighbours Ulrike Steven, director of what if: projects, and Nicholas Okwulu, director of social enterprise group Pempeople, joined forces to transform the unused garages on the Ledbury Estate, in Old Kent Road.

The garages will be turned into spaces for workshops, studios, cooking lessons

and cultural activities.

The Feminist Library is planning a series of exciting collaborations with the other potential tenants in the building, ones which give women and girls practical skills.

These include the Power Project, a metal/wood workshop for women and girls, and Community Threads, a sewing workshop.

The library has launched a fundraising campaign to raise the £50,000 needed to cover the relocation next year and other costs.

A 21-year-old has said he will need facial reconstructive surgery after a ‘random attack’ by a Bradford City fan before the Millwall match at Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

Lions fan Kasey Conlon spent the duration of the play-off final in hospital, after what he described as an unprovoked attack on himself and his brother.

He said they encountered their attacker because “stewards told us we had to go to the entrance where the Bradford fans were”.

Just outside the stadium, Kasey said a Bradford fan approached them and began ‘throwing punches’.

“He didn’t say anything. He just swung at me twice,” Kasey said. “I took two punches and my brother [aged 29] took one.”

Millwall and Bradford fans pulled them apart and diffused the situation.

Kasey then “got up” and went to speak to the first police officers they saw.

But he said the officers “told us to go to the stewards”. The stewards

then escorted them to a medical room. The brothers were then taken to hospital and were given an X-ray,

which showed Kasey has three misplaced bones around his face.

They missed the match, and didn’t

get to leave hospital until 8:30pm, before they stayed the night with family in Peckham.

Kasey will have to take two weeks off from work in Kent before he has facial reconstructive surgery, and then faces another four weeks off to recover.

He said his swollen eye is now “starting to open” after holding ice against it for hours.

Kasey added: “The fact that we were told to go through the Bradford fans was bad enough, but the police told us they couldn’t do anything about it, and just to go to the stewards.

“Knowing we had won was the only thing distracting me when I was in the hospital. I did cheer a bit. But I was gutted because I had tickets for the bottom tier. They were expensive.”

He has since reported the incident to Kent Police, who referred it to the Met. Despite the incident, Kasey said Bradford fans and Millwall fans had been getting along, and were walking towards the stadium together.

Kent Police have confirmed that they took a statement from Kasey on behalf of the Met. The Met have said they are waiting for information to be transferred to them.

Thousands applaud fan who died the day before Wembley final

THOUSANDS OF football supporters held a minute’s applause at Wembley in honour of a Millwall fan who passed away before Saturday’s match.

Lions fan Antony Murphy sadly died after suffering a cardiac arrest during Millwall’s clash with Northampton on Good Friday.

The 40-year-old had been showing signs of progress but died in hospital at 1am on Friday, May 19.

In a show of tribute to Antony, thousands of fans held a minute’s applause during the 40th minute of the match on Saturday.

Antony, who was from Bermondsey but later moved to Kent, left behind his father, who he cared for full-time.

John Kendall, who regularly visited Antony in hospital over the past month, described his shock at losing his friend.

“I’m absolutely gobsmacked and I’m going to miss him,” he told the News on Friday. “He was my best friend.”

A group of Antony’s friends set up a fundraising page to help Antony and his dad when he got out of hospital.

They have so far raised £3,375 – but John said they would now be fundraising to cover Antony’s funeral costs.

John said he had planned to visit Antony in hospital on Sunday to tell him about Millwall’s match at Wembley.

“I was going to go see him on Sunday, especially if we win, and I was going to tell him,” John said on Friday.

“I had T-shirts made up with a photo of the four of us friends and ‘oi oi China’ printed on the back.

“I’m still going to the match tomorrow and it’s going to be tough.”

Millwall Football Club said it was “deeply saddened” to learn of Antony’s passing.

“Antony fought like a true Lion from the moment he collapsed during the game against Northampton Town right up until his tragic passing on Friday morning,” the club said in a statement.

“Everyone associated with Millwall Football Club sends its condolences to the Murphy family and Antony’s friends at this tremendously difficult time.”

A Millwall spokesperson said the club had “already begun making plans to remember Antony and other supporters who have lost their lives in recent months at a special commemorative game next season”.

Antony’s family and friends have asked for privacy during this time.

CAMBERWELL: The Green Party launched its national Youth Manifesto with a press conference on Saturday at Cambridge House.

The party’s co-leader Johnathan Bartley led the speeches, and the launch was also attended by the party’s parliamentary candidate for Camberwell and Peckham, Eleanor Margolies.

Johnathan told the audience: “This manifesto is the blue print for the caring country we know Britain can be, and must be.

“Everybody here today knows that young people matter. And that a political party that fails to work with and listen to young people, and ignores them in favour of older people, that thinks of the future in terms of their tenure in office and not in terms of today’s youth, is not a political party at all, but a closed-off clique.”

THE 72-year-old artist standing as a pro-Millwall candidate in the general election vowed she would fight to get compulsory purchase law changed if elected.

Willow Winston, an artist living and working next to Millwall’s stadium, the Den, will fight for the Lewisham East seat as an independent in the general election on June 8.

The determined artist has the backing of the Association of Millwall Supporters group, which has launched its ‘Millwall Community’ campaign, promising to “send a message to those sitting in Westminster”.

For the last six years, Ms Winston has faced the threat of losing both her home of sixteen years, which overlooks the Den, and her workshop to Renewal’s ‘New Bermondsey’ development.

She made a name for herself by speaking out at Lewisham Council meetings when the council sought to compulsory purchase land used by Millwall for its café, community trust, and youth academy, to sell to Renewal as part of a 2,400-home development

around the club.

The artist, whose mother Ruth Winston-Fox MBE was the first lady mayor of Southgate, has said she would

be “very much involved” in the law concerning compulsory purchase, and would stand up for anyone who wasn’t being heard.

“I’m standing to be able to speak for anyone who’s being mistreated and is not being heard or represented,” she told a crowd gathered at Millwall’s café.

“That’s what I would do if I got to parliament.

“Any question of using the compulsory purchase order as a tool for regeneration needs to be mostly done away with. There are a few occasions when it might be necessary but in this case it is not going to be used to build a hospital it’s to do with private housing.

“I would be very much involved in the law concerning the CPO, I would want to have it changed.”

Ms Winston is up against former shadow health secretary Heidi Alexander, who was Labour MP for Lewisham East from 2010-2017, and who was also Lewisham’s deputy mayor and cabinet member for regeneration from 2006-2010.

If elected, Ms Winston said she would also be keen on education issues.

“If I got to parliament of course I would do my best to be the best sort of

MP for the locality,” she said. “I would be very keen on any questions dealing with education because I see it as always being mucked around and pushed about.”

Nick Hart, from the Association of Millwall Supporters, said Ms Winston standing in the election was not “some tactic”. “We are offering a choice,” he said. “I see this as a chance for football fans to support this campaign and send a message to those sitting in Westminster.

“It’s an opportunity for Willow to stand and make her case and for us to defend this football club.

“We see this as a first step and the real target will come in 2018. We will look at who voted against us and will look to set up candidates against them.”

GUY’S AND St Thomas’ are aiming to create the ‘next generation’ of Florence Nightingales after launching a new nursing and midwifery scheme.

Launched on International Nurses’ Day last week, the scheme aims to make the NHS Trust a place for nurses to aspire to work and create an influx of nurses and midwives who want to work there by 2020.

The trust admits that this is an ambitious target given the national shortage of nurses and midwives, but hopes by creating a great place to work and giving fully funded professional training they will create the ‘Next Generation Nightingales’, named in honour of the pioneering

Crimean war nurse Florence Nightingale, who established her nursing school at St Thomas’ Hospital in 1859.

Dame Eileen Sills, Chief Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ said: "I want this Trust to be known for developing some of the best nurses and midwives in the country. In the past the Nightingale Nurse has had a national and international reputation – we want to bring this back.”

As part of the scheme they also launched a professional award, The Nightingale Nurse Award, which will recognise the most outstanding nurses, enable them to complete fully funded work-based learning and give staff the opportunity to start or complete their masters programme. The scheme builds upon the Nightingale Project launched last year that improves the consistency of inpatient care, and more than 1,000 nursing staff have completed a day’s training over a six-month period.

As part of International Nurses’ Day the trust also announced the winners of the Trust’s 2017 Nursing and Midwifery Awards, which celebrate the exceptional work of all its nurses and midwives.

Carol McCoskery, Head of Nursing for the Trust cardiovascular service, won the inaugural Dame Eileen Sills Award said: “Although I get the recognition and the award, there’s no way I could have done it without my colleagues across the Trust and cardiovascular unit. This really was a team effort.”

The Peckham boozer, which for fourteen years has been known for its emphasis on music, was served the abatement order on April 18 after a complaint from a neighbour.

Last week, pub manager Johnny Henfrey told the News: “We have reached a marvellous conclusion with the noise abatement issue. It’s great news, really sensible. “[Southwark Council] has foregone the noise abatement order, so there is no need for me to appeal it in court.”

An online campaign had gathered pace under the banner “don’t cut the Gowlett out of Peckham” – as Johnny and his regulars feared that noise restrictions could make the businesses “unsustainable”.

But Johnny added: “The whole campaign has died and I’ve promised to be on my best behaviour.

“I had a very good meeting with the heads of department for licensing and anti-social behaviour.

They recognised my fourteen years of

exemplary management of the building, and I told them I thought the decision had been heavy handed.

“But I have agreed to double our efforts to maintain order outside the pub. We will be retweeting our noise monitor readings, and myself and another member of my team will take a course in crowd management.

“We want to be responsible and we want to be good neighbours for people living here.

“It’s all worked out amicably. The council were brilliant and really understood my frustrations.”

A PECKHAM singer is living the dream after winning the chance to record and produce her own song with industry professionals.

Trinna Carter, 24, only entered the Vodafone Future Breakers competition after being encouraged to do so by her sister.

Now Trinna, whose music is a mix of Reggae and R&B, will get to record her song Too Bad after winning the competition. Trinna said: “I’m hoping to put together a summer EP and a winter

EP and more shows and performances.”

Her music could now be released on Spotify and iTunes.

Speaking about her success in the competition Trinna said: “The best thing about being a Vodafone Future Breaker is being able to get into the studio and work with industry professionals – that’s when this dream became real for me.”

Trinna added that she hopes to work with upcoming rapper Yxng Bane from east London in the near future: “This opportunity has been amazing and I’m now working with a couple of artists, including Yxng Bane to bring out an EP later this year.”

A TASTE of traditional Japan has been brought to Peckham as it is now home to London’s and the UK’s first sake brewery.

Lucy Holmes, 29, and Tom Wilson, 31, of Mundania Road, set up Kanpai, which means ‘cheers’ in Japanese, after a hobby blossomed into a full scale operation, which they hope will see sake gain popularity.

Lucy said: “We would love to see the popularity of sake in London and the UK grow and for more people to enjoy it.”

After a trip to Japan the couple fell in love with the sweet Japanese rice wine and began hosting sake parties for family and friends after Tom began brewing at home. Then three months ago after being ‘inspired by people’s interest’ they opened a small brewery in Print Village on Chadwick Road.

The pair still work full time and spend evenings and weekends at the brewery making their first batch, which will launch in Selfridges next month.

Lucy said local restaurants and businesses had been hugely supportive

and, once launched, Hop Burns & Black Craft pub will stock Kanpai for locals to enjoy.

A batch of sake takes eight weeks to make and their first batch will produce around 600 to700 bottles. Lucy said: “You brew it like a beer and drink it like a wine.” Sake is traditionally enjoyed in small quantities, served either chilled or warm, and Lucy suggests it’s a great addition to cocktails.

The couple, who have lived in Peckham for over four years, are also getting married next week at the Asylum chapel in Peckham.

Lucy said they enjoy working together: “It’s nice to see each other working, normally you say goodbye in the morning and then only see each other at night.”

They have also launched a crowdfunding page this week.

The project jointly run by Age UK Lewisham & Southwark and Pool Reinsurance brought together older people from the day centre and students from Notre Dame Girls School to come up with ideas and designs for the mural and capsule in a series of workshops hosted by artist Eleanor Shipman.

The Trust, which runs sites across south London, including the Maudsley Hospital in Camberwell, was visited by inspectors from the CQC in January.

They rated the Trust as ‘Good’ in many areas, such as child and adolescent mental health wards, and ‘outstanding’ for community mental health services for people with learning disabilities or autism.

But they gave the trust a rating of “requires improvement” in some areas, despite commenting that it had addressed the “most serious issues” identified in 2015.

Staff vacancy rates were over 40 per cent on seven acute wards, leading to cancellations of patient activities. The highest was a 49 per cent at the Powell ward in Ladywell, Lewisham.

Inspectors also objected to Trust’s staff using the “prone position” to restrain mental health patients.

Between May 2016 and January, 360 patients were restrained using the prone method, which involves holding a patient face-down to the ground with two people restricting the patient’s arms and legs. The Department of Health introduced rules in 2013 to limit its use following debates on whether it can restrict patients breathing, or whether it was a needed to keep staff safe. The CQC commented that the Trust had improved its recording of prone-restraint cases, whereas in 2015 “incidents of restraint were not being accurately recorded”.

Patients on four acute wards at Maudsley Hospital raised concerns about pest control, which the trust had “struggled to keep under control”, despite insect infestations at the Aubrey Lewis 3 ward in May 2016.

Inspectors noted some staff had not completed training for care of patients

with autism and learning disabilities, although new training regimes were “being rolled out across the wards”.

However, the inspectors complemented staff on their high morale, and said the majority of patients found them “kind and caring” and “offered practical and emotional support”.

The inspectors found “good working relationships” between ward staff and home treatment teams, which “supported the delivery of effective patient care”.

The report also said the Trust had “significantly reduced” the number of patients being cared for in hospitals outside their local area.

Overall there were sixteen out of 38 points on which the Trust had not sufficiently improved since inspections in 2015, in its services Lewisham, Lambeth and Croydon, as well as Maudsley Hospital in Camberwell.

Responding to the CQC report, a SLaM spokesperson said: “We welcome the CQC’s findings that our acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units have improved so they are now rated ‘good’ for being caring and responsive.

Due to the hard work of our staff, this means that the trust has no 'inadequate' ratings.

“We work constantly to improve our care and the CQC has outlined areas that we need to improve. Our Clinical Director and Service Director are using the report to work with staff to embed the many improvements already underway. Our priority is safe and compassionate care and our focus is on supporting our staff to be able to prevent and to de-escalate incidents.

We are paying particular attention to understanding the use of restraint in our services so that we can improve the experience and safety for people who use services.

“The CQC’s report provides us with an agenda for making these necessary improvements. We are developing an action plan which we will submit to the CQC at the end of May.”

Man found guilty of sexual assault, outraging public decency and exposure

A FOOT fetishist who touched himself in public, and sexually assaulted a woman, has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Aaron Black, 30, was found guilty of committing eight counts of outraging public decency, six counts of exposure and one count of sexual assault.

The Catford man committed fifteen offences in the boroughs of Southwark, Hackney and Lewisham over a nine-month period, with eight female victims.

He sexually assaulted one victim and carried out a sex act on himself in Harper Road, near Elephant and Castle, on September 24 last year.

Another offence was committed on July 26 last year at a bus stop at the Elephant and Castle junction.

The last incident took place while he was on bail awaiting trial, after being charged with committing the earlier offences.

He was found guilty at Inner London Court last week and appeared in court on Thursday to be sentenced.

London CPS reviewing lawyer Varinder Hayre said: “Aaron Black

was a serial offender targeting lone women in a disturbing manner, often at bus stops.

“The women he approached gave evidence of the alarm and distress his obscene acts caused them, with many of them subjected to unsettling comments about feet.

“They were able to give evidence in court shielded from the defendant by screens, as part of the CPS commitment to helping victims and witnesses give their best evidence, and we thank them for coming forward to support this prosecution.”

Siwan Hayward, TfL’s head of transport policing, said: “I commend all these women for coming forward and reporting what they saw.

“Every report matters and helped police build a picture so they could catch Black and he could be sentenced for his offensive, disgusting crimes. This behaviour will not be tolerated on our transport network. Offenders will be identified and will be brought to justice.

“I would also like to thank Varinder Hayre and Paul Rattigan from the CPS who I worked in partnership with to deliver this successful outcome.”

BURGESS PARK care home has been rated 'inadequate' by a health watchdog - almost two years on from being placed in special measures.

The care home, in Picton Street, Camberwell, was first placed in special measures in July 2015 and rated as 'inadequate' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

It later climbed a rung and was rated as 'requires improvement' by inspectors in December 2015, but remained in special measures.

At the time, inspectors found two breaches in regulations for safe care and treatment and good governance and asked the registered provider to send them a plan of how they would meet legal requirements - which they never did.

After its most recent routine inspection on January 23 and 31, the CQC rated the care home 'inadequate' again and kept it in special measures.

Inspectors found evidence that the provider – Four Seasons Limited – had made some improvements, and that a breach in relation to staffing had been met.

However, they found a continued breach of good governance, as well as new breaches of safe care and treatment and need for consent.

An embargo has been placed on the care home and the council cannot place residents at the premises.

The care home, which looks after adults over 65, will be kept under review and will be inspected again within six months – but it could face closure if the CQC decides to take action.

Tower Bridge care home, in Tower Bridge Road, was also previously rated 'inadequate' and placed in special measures in June 2015, but has since been rated ‘good’ during two consecutive inspections in June 2016 and more recently in March 2017.

Cllr Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for adult care and financial inclusion, said the council was concerned about the latest rating for Burgess Park, but pleased about Tower Bridge Road.

“Council officers and local NHS clinicians are monitoring and engaged with the provider to ensure that this independent nursing care home makes all

necessary improvements and maintains safe standards of care,” he said.

“The council and NHS will not be making new placements until the required improvements are effected, which would allow the nursing care home to come out of special measures.

“It is very pleasing to hear that Tower Bridge nursing care home has been awarded a ‘good’ rating by the CQC. I often speak to the families of its residents who tell me how well the home looks after their loved ones.”

Councillor Maria Linforth-Hall, Southwark Liberal Democrat spokesperson for adult social care, said she was “delighted” to learn of Tower Bridge care home’s ‘good’ rating.

"A lot of work has been done to improve the home after I had raised serious concerns with local council officers, and the company that manages the home, about the condition in which many elderly residents lived in,” she said.

“Despite this success, as the recent inspection at Burgess Park shows, there is still significant work to be done to provide high-quality and accessible care accommodation for elderly residents across the borough.”

HC-One Tower Bridge care home manager Arthur Tanare added: “We are delighted with this report which is a testament to the hard work that each and every member of the team puts in day in day out.

“We pride ourselves on providing outstanding care to residents and I would like to thank and congratulate the whole team for their energy, enthusiasm and commitment.

“The health and wellbeing of our residents is at the heart of everything we do, and we are 100 per cent focused on continuing to deliver the kindest care.”

The News contacted Four Seasons for comment regarding Burgess Park care home, but did not receive a response before going to press.

My pledge walking around the green

I LOVE Goose Green and have already walked around it more than 100 times this year.

For the first time ever, on Saturday 20 May, I walked around it six times in a day. What concerned me was that during the sixth visit, after 5pm, I coughed a lot. I suspect that was due to the air pollution caused by vehicles.

At the end of the year I will donate 10p to Hope UK, for their important drug education work, for every time I walk around Goose Green this year.

Where have all the toilets gone?

IT SURELY must be time that Southwark Council replaced toilets in the Blue.

Toilets are not a luxury but a vital facility for stallholders, shoppers and visitors’ rates were increased, but without proper toilets and baby changing plus of course signing to inform all the new residents living in Bermondsey.

The toilet in the Bank public house is very nice, but not always suitable for wheelchair users and their carers. The small toilet in the library likewise.

We local people like the Blue and the stallholders, but without a toilet and essential facilities we hop on a bus and go to Surrey Quays. Of course that is not that easy for wheelchair users.

Age and medication, especially water tablets, make us wary of the absence of toilets too.

Come on Southwark Council return our toilets.

Locals get enagaged on the 3rd runway I HAVE lived in East Dulwich for seventeen years and during that time aircraft noise has become an increasing problem.

HACAN research shows that, since 2009, Southwark has moved from being the tenth most overflown borough to the fifth, with 187,900 flights a year passing overhead.

If a third runway at Heathrow goes ahead, residents in southeast London will experience even more noise pollution as more planes are routed over Southwark on their approach to Heathrow.

The consultation for Heathrow's third runway closes on 25 May and I'm very concerned that there has been no effort to engage with residents in Southwark and southeast London whose quality of living will be affected by a third runway. It's not just those in west London who will be adversely affected by a third runway.

AS GP leaders from around the UK gather for their national conference this week, it is clear that politicians of all parties must finally realise that services across the country are at breaking point.

increasing demand on services.

Underfunding, increased red tape and GP shortages have left many patients struggling to get appointments, while 300 GP practices across the country are facing closure.

With recent BMA surveys revealing that almost a third of GP partners in South London say they are unable to fill vacancies in the past year and over eight in ten said their workload is affecting the quality and safety of patient care, the situation requires urgent attention.

That’s why the BMA is calling for whoever is next in government to commit to bringing NHS spending in line with leading European countries and increase the general practice expenditure to 11 per cent of the overall health budget, which would help plug the £2.5bn deficit.

Politicians must not duck these challenges. All parties must commit to repairing the fractures in general practice before it is too late.

We support strike action at cinema

SOUTHWARK TRADES Council have been busy examining general election manifestos to see which would be of most benefit to the workers of Southwark.

The Labour Party’s promise to end Zero Hour contracts and to restore some trade union rights is clearly the winner. It’s not enough for the Tories to have armies of Home Care workers suffering uncertainty of wages and zero job security. Now they want to heap that insecurity on all of us. Who knows what will finish us off in the end; dementia (soon to be the most common form of death) or worry and stress trying to make ends meet. The Tories really do want us all in this together!

We send a message of support to workers taking strike action at the East Dulwich Picture House and note the Labour Party’s pledge to introduce a minimum wage of £10 per hour would settle their claim. Southwark Council has been a London Living Wage payer so we now know this invigorates the local economy and saves the Government money for inwork benefits. It’s a no brainer!

AY IS a vibrant month and moves us further towards summer; the sheer variety of plants growing is a delight.

One of my favourite flowering trees – the Horse chestnut is in bloom; these towering specimens are at their best in May displaying their newly emerged and over-size bright green leaves plus large candle-like cream flowers.

May can be fine and warm but not usually until mid-month. It started with below average temperatures and brought the first rain for many weeks.

So far spring has been unusually dry; winter had low rainfall making it necessary to water plants from March.

Soil conditions are already dry and compacted; any newly planted shrubs and seedlings will need to be kept well watered, if allowed to dry out they will suffer a check in growth at a crucial time.

Houseplants require more attention water regularly, take off any dead leaves and top up pots with good quality compost. Feed through the growing season to ensure healthy growth, check for pests and diseases regularly and treat quickly if scale bugs or greenfly appear.

Most spring bulbs have finished flowering; allow the foliage to die back naturally. Although this looks untidy it ensures the bulbs to take on energy through the leaves for as long as possible and this will ensure strong growth in the following year.

May is the month when garden pests become more active; the mild winter allowed greenfly, slugs and snails to survive and they were inflicting damage early in the growing season.

There are various organic methods available to control all types of pests.

The dry weather has kept the slugs and snails slightly in check, but the greenfly (aphids) seem to be most troublesome infesting tender new growth on roses and shrubs. Pyrethrum Powder is a useful organic preparation to control greenfly, whitefly, thrips and caterpillars; available as a ‘puffer pack’ which makes it easy to apply.

Pyrethrum powder is made from the flowers of Chrysanthemum cinerariefolium; it sounds harmless but always follow the instructions on the label. It’s a useful product - also effective against weevils, leafhoppers, capsids and flea beetles; these pests are likely to make an appearance at some point during the growing season and so it is best to be prepared. THE STORY of the blind, French genius Louis Braille and the invention of the writing system that bears his name is a great one, and one that deserves to be told. I'm not sure, however, that it deserves to be sung, writes Matt Baker ...

Let me explain. The Braille Legacy felt quite a lot like Les Miserables, big musical numbers, poor kids, evil French men, you know the sort of thing, but the intimacy of Louis Braille's story, whilst heartrending and moving, seemed to lack the panoramic scope of the epic musicals it aspires to imitate.

It's not that the music was bad; many of the songs were catchy and performed superbly by an able cast.

It just felt that the story was not a match for the vehicle. Many was the time I felt, you could have just said that and not sung about it for three minutes.

Nevertheless, there were highlights.

The kids were great, and much was uplifting, including the standout musical number 'We're Friends'.

In the end, however, I left dissatisfied, and more than a bit puzzled. I wanted to enjoy it, particularly as the story is so magnificent. But I left still feeling that this tale would better be served by another vehicle other than a musical. And truly it is a story that deserves to be told.

NEVER MIND ‘CURIOUSER and curiouser’, Les Enfants Terrible’s Alice’s Adventures Underground just got brillianter and brillianter as our journey through a dark underworld, peopled by those we know so well from Lewis Carroll’s books, got more and more nonsensical, writes Michael Holland...

This multi-sensory experience involves interaction, excellent puppetry, circus and optical illusions in a non-stop 90 minutes of being led through tunnels and into a variety of Dystopian rooms by an ever-changing variety of strange characters.

Following his great success with A Chorus Line in 1975, directorchoreographer Michael Bennett received acclaim in the form of a Tony as we watch Lettice guiding her hapless tourists with enthusiasm and vigour through the big house, every word pronounced as though from the stage at Stratford. Soon every speech becomes more and more outrageous and her employer, Lotte Schoen, from the Preservation Trust (Maureen Lipman) finds it all too much and dismisses her from her post.

The original story has been changed somewhat but the Wonderland characters are all there. No one wants to cross the Queen of Hearts whose penchant for lopping off heads was given full rein. In fact, I wouldn’t want to get on the wrong side of any of these dodgy characters for fear of being left alone in this wonderfully scary warren of tunnels and corridors where unseen Mome Raths snarl and snap at your ankles.

On chancing upon The Tweedles we discovered they seemed set on giving everyone a soaking; you cannot fail to be mesmerised by the Cheshire Cat in

Strictly Undazzling Award for its original run yet despite this the piece seems to have fallen into obscurity and become somewhat of a curiosity piece and, while charming, this new offering doesn’t provide enough to prove an alternative fate.

Focusing around Bea Asher, a Bronx widow, and her stale life in her Thrift Shop we see her transform into a Stardust Ballroom darling and a new whirlwind romance with a man that isn’t exactly as honest about his personal life as he perhaps should have been.

As much as Lettice is overplayed, Lovage is the opposite.

Then, as the two of women of a ‘certain age’ strike up an unlikely friendship the comedy almost moves into farce.

Nonetheless, as women of this supposed ‘certain age’ they both look great! The energy from Kendall is stunning, her rolling of her raspy rrrr’s is joyful. Lipman almost persuades us that she is pining for her lost youth and past, but it becomes muddled. This is not due to

veterans excellently through the two hour tale, but it just isn’t enough. While it is a pleasant two hours that passes, it falls fairly on the bland side. While Martin’s performance of the now cabaret classic ‘Fifty Percent’ is moving in its brutal honesty of Bea’s decision to settle for half the married man she has fallen for, the rest of the music is pretty unmemorable.

Overall the piece as a whole is somewhere around the ‘fifty percent’ mark itself. While there are pleasing performances from its older cast members, the occasional witty one-liners

the imbibing of alcohol in this scene either. The revealing of each character’s past could have been moving yet they seemed to be acting in separate vacuums.

With ingenious sets, this play is not without humour. Its promising start, though, merely led to unfulfilled potential. There is some beautifully written dialogue but the relationship between the ‘odd couple’ never seems totally believable. I imagined their friendship to be touching or emotional but it doesn’t quite get there.

Lounging around with him on plump cushions, I almost nodded off myself!

But your personal experience in the Wonderland Underground differs depending on whether you choose the Drink Me or Eat Me route, or whether you become a Heart, Diamond, Club or Spade, though all the groups reunite at the end in the courthouse of the Queen, who is once again looking for necks to slice.

Alice Adventures Underground is a big production and a lot of work has gone into creating the amazing set of walkways and rooms, the visual and audio effects, and the costumes. A lot of people bring it all together and it works.

Hats off to Les Enfants Terrible and the performers who all look like they would be great on a night out but I would fear that I may never be the same person ever again if I did.

Immersive, interactive theatre is not for everyone but if it is then this is a lot of fun.

It looked like some of the young women in the audience had come, guided by the original John Tenniel drawings, dressed as Alice, which added even more weirdness to the spectacle.

and pleasant dance moments, the drama fails to blossom. In a nutshell while there isn’t really anything to dislike about Ballroom, there really isn’t anything to fall in love with either. For any Michael Bennett fans that have been waiting for a British adaptation of this obscure musical, you may as well give it a go out of curiosity but despite a valiant effort from its strong cast this rendition fails to dazzle as one would expect a musical about a ballroom to do.

Lettice and Lovage is an ‘actory’ type of play if that makes sense. By Act Three I felt it had run its course and that it had become as long as one of the Shakespearian plays Lettice continually referred to.

wo theatre lovers have set about chronicling the 145year history of the Coronet in Elephant and Castle, writes Owen Sheppard...

Before the much-loved venue closes its doors for the last time at the beginning of 2018, Constantine Gras and John Whelan will put on a huge celebration of theatre and art to tell its story.

The pair say that the most intriguing phase of its life was a five-year period from when it opened in 1872 as the Elephant and Castle Theatre, at the behest of “playful and entrepreneurial” businessman Edward Smith.

A key figure in those young years was Irish-born actress Marie Henderson, who pioneered the eponymous genre of Melodrama.

“Before arriving in Elephant and Castle she established herself as a leading player at an old theatre called The Britannia,” Constantine said.

“There was a rise in opportunities for women to get involved in theatre in the Victorian period.”

Marie made a name for herself by running Melodrama productions with her husband all through the year, with a big pantomime at Christmas.

Melodrama had made its way to the UK from France and Germany, and was known for including “stock characters” that were good and evil, often placing fun above nuance.

“But there was great variety within that,” Constantine said, adding that Shakespeare became a popular choice for melodramatic adaptions.

The theatre and the genre also played a vital part in the story of bringing black actors to the fore.

Morgan Smith was one of the first black men to be given a more serious, non-comedic role when he starred as Othello, in a cast that also included Marie.

John said Victorian-era Elephant and Castle became known as the “Piccadilly of the south”, helped by its position as a transport hub with a plentiful supply of buses and coaches, and its own railway station.

The Elephant’s theatre scene began to function as a place for bigger producers and casting directors to scout for new talent and new production companies before taking them to the next level.

In true melodramatic fashion, the Elephant and Castle Theatre burnt down in a terrible fire in 1878.

The cause of the fire was not known, but such fires were not uncommon in the days when “gaslights were what everyone used in wooden buildings”, John said.

Marie had been diagnosed with syphilis around the same time as the fire.

It is believed that the mindaltering effects of the disease, mixed with the distress of losing her theatre contributed to her going mad. As well as losing her home, her theatre was where Marie kept all of her treasured costumes.

Towards the end of her life, and as her madness intensified, it was said that she could only speak three words: “jolly”, “yes” and “oh dear”.

She was put in the old Bedlam Hospital, and died in 1878.

with the public as the Victorian era drew to a close, as more sophisticated audiences began to look upon it as lowbrow.

But the pair say the venue remained a home to melodrama in its ever-changing forms, and played host to a renaissance of the genre in the 1920s.

John and Constantine look to Charlie Chaplain and the rise of silent films as another stage in the evolutionary path of melodrama.

The venue re-emerged as an ABC Cinema between 1932 and the early 1980s, when it carried on as an independentlyrun cinema until 1999.

Also in keeping with the theme, the last film ever to be shown at the cinema was Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut.

Since then of course, The Coronet (as it became known) has been a venue for gigs and club nights, but as part of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre regeneration, it is due to close at the beginning of 2018.

Capturing the last breaths of the Coronet ON NOVEMBER 8, John and his colleagues from the People’s Company will host an evening of animated theatre at the Coronet, to tell the story of its relationship Melodrama.

“We hope to capture the last breaths of the Coronet using its history,” John said.

The pair are also appealing for News readers to get in touch and contribute their memories of nights out at the Coronet – anyone who went on dates or hung out there with friends, or if they have old merchandise, ticket stubs, or anything that recalls some memory of the venue’s long history.

“I have a dream of finding someone who is 100 years plus and who went to the Elephant and Castle Theatre before conversion to a cinema in the late 1920s,” Constantine said.

“It was just so important as a venue here. It had a real buzz. It was so many people’s reason for coming to the Elephant and Castle.”

A two-week exhibition of their findings will also be held at the Artworks in Walworth Road.

f you’ve always thought that doner kebabs belong to the boozy recesses of a 2am walk home from the pub, you might want to think again, writes Kirsty Purnell...

The owner of Bermondsey’s recently refurbished Golden Grill & Fish Bar, Oz Ergun, has taken all the best bits of a kebab shop – and then added some.

While you can still get your hands on the traditional trimmings – doner meat, lashings of garlic sauce and fluffy pitta – Oz used his refurb as an opportunity to add a new dimension to the shop’s offering, including a 30-cover seating area, an alcohol license, hot drinks and the good old British favourite, fish and chips.

“We wanted to create a restaurant feel and do something different,”

said Oz, who first opened the Spa Road restaurant up three years ago.

“We wanted to create a better environment here and give people more choice of food.”

They’re certainly on the right track for what they’re trying to achieve.

While you can still pop in for a swift takeaway, if you choose to dine in, you pull up a chair at one of the wooden tables, enjoy a waitress taking your order and marvel as your kebab arrives on a plate, rather than in a polystyrene container.

On the menu front, they’ve got a five-strong starter selection (including Calamari and Halloumi) and for mains, fish and chips, chicken, kebabs (naturally) and falafel for the veggies among you.

Oz said that while the hours can be gruelling for him – up to 80 hours some weeks – he loves working in hospitality, serving customers and being a part of the local community.

“People travel from all over to come here to eat – Elephant and Castle, Greenwich and even Woolwich. People come back who’ve moved out of the area.”

And when my food arrives on a plate which I could only describe “platter” in size, I can see – and taste – why people keep coming back.

Taking the recommendation of Oz, I went for mixed kebab – doner meat and chicken shish – and chips, along with some halloumi.

The chicken was absolutely delicious and definitely a step above what you’d usually get stuffed into a pitta bread in your high street kebab house.

When I tried to lure Oz into sharing the ingredients of the chicken marinade, he remained tight-lipped. It is a family receipt, he informed me, that only his father is privy to...

While I thoroughly enjoyed the food, I did face a bit of a problem though. Largely – actually, entirely - due to the gargantuan size of the portion.

My mother raised me to believe that you should never leave anything on your plate. I am 30years-old now but this mentality is still at large in my food psyche.

So by the time I had finished – having eaten around three quarters of the food, which I continued to be within the realms of politeness – I was probably one forkful away from a food coma. This made for a harrowing tube ride home.

The amazing thing, though – I was full to burst, all for just over a tenner. And there was enough food there for two people. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Golden Grill & Fish Bar is a kebab house with a touch of class – give it a bash.

Floating epicurian boats THE GREENWICH TAVERN

JUST A hop, skip and a jump away from the magnificent main gates of Greenwich Park sits the equally grand Greenwich Tavern.

On entry I was struck by the space and light afforded by the large windows and the white tiling behind the bar reflecting it all back to brighten up the interior, writes Michael Holland...

Some of that light caught the array of beer taps on the bar, which in turn caught my eye. ‘A pint of Greenwich Ale, please’, I asked one of the two smart and smiling staff members.

‘When in Rome…’ I almost said but stopped myself from uttering such an awful cliché.

I was out with Mum, just turned 85 and still as sprightly as a sprite in spring, who had her usual glass of Merlot.

The ale was smooth and velvety; it

was like sipping soft suede. Mum didn’t get all pathetically poetic like me, and merely said her wine was nice.

A compact, succinct menu covered all the right areas of pub grub requirements, with a wine list to match. I was liking it already.

Mum was quickly on to the Crispy Salt & Pepper Squid with Aioli to start. Importantly they looked good when they landed on the table: crunchy rings of goodness that had the perfect bite to them. I had the Breaded Brie with Apricot Chutney a sizeable chunk of warm, soft cheese escorted by delicious bread and a chutney with charm, inasmuch as it did not overwhelm the gentleness of the Brie, but complemented its delicateness.

Arriving early meant the kitchen was not yet inundated with orders, so

soon after our first plates were cleared away so our main courses arrived. That was quick, I thought, while I was still savouring the aftertaste of the chutney.

Mum’s plate looked ideal, a picture of agreeable tones: the bright red tomatoes adding contrast to the deep green broccoli, the chips, crisp and golden against the dark Rib Eye Steak, glazed with melting butter.

The chips were amongst the best I have had the pleasure of biting into for a long while, and Mum said the steak was delicious.

I, on the other hand, went for a Caesar salad with corn-fed chicken.

What was I thinking? When is a salad ever going to float Epicurean boats? I obviously had a moment of madness and can only blame myself.

There was nothing wrong with it, other than the chicken was lacking

any succulence; the leaf was fresh and the dressing fine, although in need of the anchovy saltiness I was seeking; the packet croutons crisp and the egg boiled - just about everything required for a Caesar Salad. It would have made an excellent lunch so I must remember not to order anything with salad in the title for dinner again.

Whereas anything that has ‘tart’ and ‘vanilla ice cream’ included in its description is a must! We decided to share the Lemon Panacotta tart, Raspberries & Vanilla Ice Cream and ‘tart’ was the operative word here.

The lemon and raspberries combined to make you pucker up the lips like an outraged headmistress confronted with boys from Bermondsey mooning at her girls.

The perfect end to a delightful dinner.

Lioness Hincks pounces at the death ‘Guv’nors’ Joseph’s retain trophy

MILLWALL LIONESSES manager Lee Burch said last weekend’s 2-1 win at Watford Ladies was the “perfect way to end the season” after the result stretched their unbeaten run to seven games.

The Lionesses finished third in the FA Women’s Super League Spring Series 2 after Ashlee Hincks’ last-minute winner at Kings Langley.

Billie Brooks headed the Lioonesses in front in the 65th minute before Merrick Will equalised for Watford.

But captain Hincks pounced in injurytime to ensure a successful end to the

Spring Series campaign.

“It was the perfect way to end the season,” Burch said. “I think the way the season’s been going for us, to go and get a victory away on the last day is brilliant.

“Was it a good performance? No, it wasn’t the best performance, we had a few things that went against us as far as players missing, things like that. And we had a two-week break, we never really got over that.

“We maybe didn’t deserve the win, but good teams grind out performances. That’s exactly what I think the girls did and they deserve it,

Chris hopes to knock ‘em for six

maybe not for the 90 [minutes], but they deserve it for the season as a whole. They’ve been absolutely brilliant.”

Millwall’s match-winner Hincks was more positive about the performance: “It's always nice to get a late winner but I think we really dominated the game and overall deserved the win.

“They came out in the second half and put a lot of pressure on us. We also knew they would be strong on setpieces, so our aim was not to let them have any. They didn't have any in the first half but from one their first corners they scored.

“For us that was really disappointing and something we wanted to avoid, but our opening goal was important and we got the result in the end. After not winning the opening four fixtures, it's been unbelievable to then win five games.

“The big thing for us was to target the teams in and around us and match them. Going forward, you can't take anything for granted but we know that we can compete with all the teams in the league, which gives us a good base to build on.”

ST JOSEPH’S RC walked away with the honours in the annual Bobby Abel Cricket Cup for primary schools in Southwark Park last weekend.

Kongo, whose professional record is 3-0, is still competing as a welter weight but is going to fight at light-middleweight against an opponent that has yet to be confirmed.

Dulwich club hopes to inspire women’s rugby newcomers

Developed by England Rugby, the Meet Your Inner Warrior campaign is aimed at women to encourage greater female participation in contact rugby across the country.

Old Alleynians will be holding their event at their Dulwich Common home on Saturday, May 27, starting at 11am, with players of all abilities welcome.

Chairman Mike Lobb is hoping that Old Alleynians’ Warrior Camp will inspire newcomers to fall in love with rugby.

“We’d love to get more people involved with us and hopefully they come along to this event,” Lobb said.

“We’ve got a really good girls’ section at the club.

“We’ve got girls in the county set-up and a really good link with London Southbank University as well – we’ve also held girls rugby festivals in the past.

OLD ALLEYNIANS Rugby Club in Dulwich is extending an invitation to local women to meet their ‘Inner Warrior’ at a free rugby taster event.

The tournament is named for Abel, the cricketer from Rotherhithe who played for Surrey and England and was nicknamed ‘The Guv’nor’.

It was organised by London PE and Sports Network based at Bacon’s College, and St Joseph’s retained the Friends of Southwark Park-sponsored trophy, winning it for the third time.

“It’ll be a real taster session. The games will be all-inclusive and we’ll have a basic strength and conditioning session, too. We’re hoping for good numbers.”

The first round of Inner Warrior camps in January saw more than 1,500 women and girls enjoy their first taste of rugby, many of whom have continued their participation within the sport.

As the RFU look to further expand the number of females involved in the sport, the continued success of the

Inner Warrior campaign is a top priority.

England Women’s player Sarah McKenna said: “The Warrior Camps are perfect for those keen to get involved, get outdoors, keep fit and make friends.

“I’ve gained so much from rugby, both on and off the pitch, and would challenge everyone to step out of their comfort zone and meet their Inner Warrior.”

A ton in each innings for Kumar Sangakkara, the first Surrey batsman to achieve that feat in the County Championship since Arun Harinath in June 2015, led Surrey to the draw.

Goalkeeper will experience Championship football for the first time in his career

JORDAN Archer said the “hurt” of last year’s play-off final loss made Saturday’s win over Bradford “that extra bit sweeter”.

Archer kept a clean sheet a year after Neil Harris’ side were beaten 31 by Barnsley.

They came through a turbulent season, just Harris’ second in charge, and Archer praised “old man” Steve Morison for his Wembley winner.

“The hurt of last year, it makes today that extra bit sweeter,” Archer said. “We’ve been using that all season to drive us on and it’s paid off.

“The boys are over the moon. The old man has popped up again and scored for us. He’s done well throughout the season, and has popped up in big games as well.

“The boys dug in deep and we kept a clean sheet against a good Bradford team.”

Archer saved arguably his best performance of the season for the final, saving from James Meredith in the first half after producing a superb one-handed stop to deny Billy Clarke.

“I was waiting for him to take a heavy touch and he took one and I just came out and spread myself,” Archer said. “I was thankful to get a fingertip on it.

“To get a clean sheet and to win in the 85th minute, the way we did, I was tempted to run up [to celebrate] but we still had five or so minutes left. The boys put their bodies on [the

line] at the end and showed a lot of determination to see the job out.”

There were a tense five minutes of added time, in the last of which Bantams defender Tony McMahon missed the target from a tight angle inside the box.

Archer said: “I kissed the post – I’m

sure it hit the post.

“The team spirit has been unreal.

The manager deserves a lot of credit for today. He has a lot of experience and a lot of young players so he’s selected his squad very carefully.

We’ve got a great bunch. The young boys feed off the older boys.

“I’m going to go away and recharge my batteries,” he said. “We’ve got a big season ahead of us next season.

I’m sure we’ll evaluate what we have to do to stay up.

“I want to play at the very top so the Championship is the next step for me. I’m sure I’m going to enjoy it.”

Romeo was suspended for the defeat to Barnsley a year ago as Neil Harris’ Lions failed to win promotion, but he can now look forward to second-tier football next season.

“It was as good as you could imagine and a bit more on top,” he said. “It was a great feeling.

“We learned our lesson last year and to do it this year is a credit to the gaffer and the staff.

“If there was ever a time to pat yourself on the back as a player it’s now.

“It’s a big occasion, and you’ve got to manage yourself on a big occasion, individually and as a team.

“I think that’s what we did well.

They played well in the first half but we stood strong. That was our game plan, to stay strong. That’s what we’ve done all season.

“It’s something you dream of as a kid, it’s such a blessing.”

THE PLAYER who came back for free, beat the goalkeeper who cost a quid, netting Millwall over £6million by winning promotion to the Championship.

The significance of Steve Morison’s 85th-minute winner against Bradford at Wembley, when he prodded past Colin Doyle from Lee Gregory’s flicked header, went beyond just securing promotion.

Failure to do so would likely have led to the squad breaking up, one that has been put together so carefully and astutely by Lions manager Neil Harris.

Two years ago, Harris’ first big job was to clear up the mess he had inherited. One of the eighteen players he released was his friend Alan Dunne, who cried when he was told his time at the club had come to an end.

It was an early insight into Harris’ steeliness, and the new direction he wanted to take the club.

After releasing one former team-mate, Harris made two others his two main targets during the summer of 2015.

Morison arrived from Leeds United in August, after Tony Craig had re-joined Millwall the previous month. The recruits didn’t exactly capture the imagination of

supporters, but it’s not a stretch to say there would have been no promotion without them.

Before last year’s final, Harris took the armband off Morison and gave it to Craig when Byron Webster got injured in the warm-up. Craig and Harris later played it down; Morison didn’t, admitting it had left him “angry” and “frustrated”. It’s credit to all three and sums up their professionalism and drive that a fallout didn’t spill into this season.

In the second leg of the play-off semifinal against Scunthorpe, it was Craig who crossed to Morison to head in a crucial equaliser that turned the entire tie.

Craig also scored in the last-day 4-3 win at Bristol Rovers that sealed a play-off spot. Morison’s winning strike last weekend made it three goals and three assists for him in the last crucial four games of the season.

He was asked afterwards if the experience of seeing Barnsley lift the trophy in 2016 had spurred him, and he joked: “I didn’t watch it, I was in doing a drug test like I was [Sunday]. My Wembley experience has been ruined twice in two years!”

This was Morison’s fifth Wembley final in club football, and he has now won four

of them.

Harris said the squad had a “gut feeling” this was going to be their year.

Of course it had to be Morison who got the winner, beating Doyle, whom Bradford brought for £1 last summer from Blackpool. It was tough on him and his team-mates, after the Bantams were the better side for most of the first hour.

This was Millwall at their most rope-adope effective. Harris said they always found a way this season to bounce back, and they did it one more time. Three, really, after they got up off the canvas at The Memorial Stadium, and then floored Scunthorpe with a thirteen-minute flurry at Glanford Park.

It was Morison’s second winning goal at Wembley in club football, after he won the Football League Trophy for

Stevenage with a late strike in 2007.

“I brought the knee slide back out, but I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to get back up!” he said.

“I’ve been here a few times, I scored an 88th-minute winner for Stevenage but managed to top that [Sunday].

“Hopefully the headlines will be me and this football club, and not the other stuff.”

That “other stuff” was the pitch invasion after the final whistle, and Morison is smart enough to know that that was probably a forlorn hope: Most of the headline space was given over to news of a police investigation, an EFL statement criticising the Millwall fans, and Millwall’s own statement.

stands, it must be pointed out – don’t need headlines to tell them how valuable Morison is, or the value of his goal last weekend.

Morison and Harris holiday in the same place in Portugal, and it was there one of the first conversations took place about the possibility of him joining the club for a third spell, this time playing for Harris instead of alongside him.

On Saturday he showed his worth again. Morison has another year on his current contract, but shows no signs of slowing, his winning goal ensuring he finished one above Lee Gregory with nineteen for the season.

But it wasn’t all just about Morison, who kissed his right arm where he has a tattoo of the name of his son, Fenton, after he scored his goal.

It was the left arm of Jordan Archer that had saved Millwall in the first half, when Bradford were much the better team.

Shaun Williams would later instigate the move for the goal and provide the final cross, but it was he who gave the ball away in the fourteenth minute and Bradford quickly broke. The ball was transferred to Mark Marshall who looked up and spotted Billy Clarke, who was quickly through on goal.

Shaun Hutchinson sprinted across to try to reach the attacker, but never looked like he was going to get there. Clarke raced through, Archer raced from his line and it was the top of a finger that diverted the attacker’s effort out for a corner.

It was a difficult opening period for Millwall, with the movement of Clarke and Marshall in particular causing problems. But they eventually got to grips with it, Mahlon Romeo – who was suspended last year – growing into the game and in stature. In front of him Jed Wallace finally started to press James Meredith back, after the left wing-back had been mostly on the front foot. He had tested Archer with one fierce drive in the first half.

It was in that period that Webster and Hutchinson had to show their experience and quality, and there was more evidence that had the latter been fit for the majority of the season, rather than small portions of it, Millwall would probably have been closer to automatic promotion.

Oddly enough, it was a double-change

by Stuart McCall, who had set up his team so well, that actually handed the initiative to Millwall. Off went Clarke and Nicky Law, on came Timothee Dieng and Alex Jones, but the Bantams, possibly tiring, didn’t have the same spark. Millwall seemed to sense there was an opportunity to grab a late winner.

The Lions had done the same to so many teams this season, particularly in the FA Cup when they scored in the last five minutes against three Premier League teams. With five minutes left, Williams broke, summoned the energy to surge upfield and exchange passes with Gregory, and Morison was in the right place.

Millwall feel they are back in the place they belong next season.

The next task for Harris is to somehow find a way to trump the financial clout of the likes of Sunderland, Middlesbrough and Leeds, and therefore defy the odds that already place them as one of the favourites to go down.

Harris and this bunch of players have shown they have no problems accepting and overcoming challenges like that.

FRED ONYEDINMA has decided where he wants to play his football next season.

Onyedinma is out of contract at the end of June, and Millwall have been frustrated in their attempts to get him to sign a new one.

Twenty-year-old Onyedinma came on as an 89th-minute substitute in the Lions’ 1-0 win over Bradford in the League One play-off final on Saturday.

He was later asked about his future and responded: “I can’t say anything. I can’t.”

Pressed if Millwall winning promotion could influence his decision, he again refused to give much away, before claiming he has already made up his mind: “I can’t say. I can’t really say anything, but I’ve made a decision.

That’s all I can say. We’ll have to see the next month. I’m just happy now to celebrate with the team, because it’s been a team effort.”

Onyedinma has been linked with moves to London rivals – and now Millwall’s Championship rivals next season – Fulham and QPR, after catching the eye with swashbuckling performances as Millwall defeated three Premier League teams to reach the last eight of the FA Cup. One of those, Bournemouth, are also thought to be keen.

Millwall have offered him a new deal, but his manager Neil Harris expressed his frustration with the player’s representatives in the latter part of the season.

Saturday’s appearance at Wembley was Onyedinma’s 54th game this season, but he lost his place in the side towards the latter part of the campaign as Harris preferred Jed Wallace on the right side of midfield.

But he played a key late role against Stuart McCall’s side as Millwall protected their 1-0 lead.

Onyedinma gave away a foul after taking the ball into the corner in Bradford’s half, before drawing a foul on another break to relieve the pressure as Millwall hung on during five minutes of injury-time.

“Words can’t describe it really,” Onyedinma said. “It’s crazy because last

Harris has insisted that his decision to rarely start Onyedinma in the defining months of the season had nothing to do with his player’s contract situation.

Millwall are working with the Met Police to identify those involved, with Kavanagh warning the consequences of pitch incursions are far reaching.

Kavanagh is hoping Millwall fans – the vast majority of whom stayed in the Wembley stands on Saturday waiting for the trophy presentation and to salute the players celebrating on the pitch – convince others “enough is enough”.

“We’re working carefully with the FA and all the authorities,” Kavanagh

told the News. “There are a number of people that have not only gone on the pitch but goaded the opposition.

“It is illegal to go on the pitch, I think it’s important fans understand that. I met with the Millwall Supporters Club (MSC) Monday night and the supporters want it to stop.

“If you listen to the 27,600 fans or whatever it was in the stands booing and shouting ‘off, off’, if I were one of those people who decided to go and have a selfie on the pitch I would be highly embarrassed.

travelling and are good people, the opportunity of that is gone now.

“There are all sorts of consequences from a few hundred people wanting a selfie on the pitch. Unfortunately there were those who wanted more than a selfie, and those people we will help the police identify because it is a criminal act.

“The fans now, they are upset. We are upset, but they are very upset. I think it’s a vital turning point. People have got to learn they cannot run on the pitch.”

MILLWALL CHIEF executive Steve Kavanagh said promotion is worth £6millions to the club – but warned increased costs are likely to offset any financial gains.

The Lions sealed their place in the Championship when Steve Morison scored an 85th-minute winner against Bradford at Wembley last Saturday.

Championship football will bring bigger crowds and more TV revenue, and Kavanagh says the club “want to be competitive” in the second tier.

MILLWALL WILL release defender Joe Martin this week, as they work on contracts for key players.

Martin, 28, joins winger Gregg Wylde and striker Alfie Pavey in leaving the club after the end of the season.

“There’s a quoted figure of round about £6million, but I would suggest your costs go up by £6million-plus,” Kavanagh said.

“There’s income but there’s a different cost base. We’re competing against teams with 60/70 millionpound budgets now on the playing side.

“We have to go out there and compete, we want to be competitive.

That’s what we’re working on. Yes, there’s an uptick in income, but there’s probably an uptick-plus in costs.”

Kavanagh met the rest of the Millwall board on Wednesday to discuss strategy ahead of preparations

for next season. Chairman John Berylson was also jetting into London later in the week.

Kavanagh would not be drawn on whether Millwall could break their transfer record this summer, the £800,000 they paid Derby County for Paul Goddard in December 1989.

“People have to go beyond just pure transfer fees,” Kavanagh said. “Wages nowadays are as important as transfer fees. If a player is out of contract then the transfer fee is the wages, because they are in demand.

“This idea of it’s all about transfer fees – it isn’t. A number of good players are out of contract because players let their contracts run down.

Martin set to leave Den

Defender Martin was one of Neil Harris’ first signings two years ago, when he penned a one-year deal after joining on a free transfer from Gillingham. He extended it for another year last season.

Martin played 39 times in 2015-16, including an appearance in the League One play-off final when he limped off before half-time against Barnsley.

Martin was a regular in the side in the first half of last season, but lost his place after a 3-0 defeat at Scunthorpe in December, and played just three times in 2017. His last appearance was in the 1-0 defeat to Fleetwood on April 17.

Millwall are expected to announce their retained list this week. It will also include other out-of-contract players that they are working on new deals for.

“The price of the transfer fee goes into the wages, it’s a mish-mash. We have our budget, be it wages or transfer fees, and that’s what we’ll work to.”

Meanwhile, Kavanagh revealed Millwall’s players were on bonuses to win promotion from League One. Some of the squad – including Shaun Williams, Jed Wallace, Aiden O’Brien, Ben Thompson and Tom King – jetted off to Marbella on Sunday, with Las Vegas the next stop on the promotion party.

Kavanagh said: “The whole squad was on a bonus, I’m not going to say what that was. It was a collective effort, that desire and team spirit

showed right the way through to the end of the season, into the play-offs and the final.

“That team spirit was vital in getting us through, as well as a bit of quality.”

Shaun Williams said after Saturday’s League One play-off final win that he is “working out the details” on a new contract with the club.

Defender Shaun Cummings has also been offered a new deal, and Jimmy Abdou is set to discuss his future with the club this week.

Youngsters Kris Twardek and Kyron Farrell see their contracts run out at the end of next month and will also find out if they have done enough to earn new ones.
