THOUSANDS ARE calling for a Millwall fan to be awarded the George Cross, after he was stabbed several times while trying to protect others during the London Bridge terror attack.

Roy Larner had surgery for his injuries at St Thomas’ Hospital after standing up to the three attackers on Saturday.

The Lions fan shouted “F**k you, I’m Millwall” as he took on the attackers, throwing stools and glasses at them and using his bare fists. He was stabbed in the head, neck, back and front, and had his fingers cut as he stood up to them.

Roy was one of a number of Millwall fans who took on the terrorists, or went out of their way to help terrified people fleeing the scene.

Gerard Vowls threw bottles and glasses at the terrorists, and shouted for passersby to

run for safety - alerting many to the attack.

Bermondsey window cleaner Marz ushered a family to safety in a nightclub as they fled.

Talking of his fellow Millwall fan’s bravery, he said: “We are Bermondsey people. It’s how we behave.”

And Bermondsey-born cabbie Darren Kenny pulled people into his taxi, and spent the rest of the night ferrying people for free away from the scene...

THOUSANDS ARE calling for a Millwall fan to be awarded the George Cross after he was stabbed several times while trying to protect others during the London Bridge terror attack.

Roy Larner had surgery for his injuries at St Thomas’ Hospital after standing up to the three attackers on Saturday.

The Lions fan shouted “F**k you, I’m Millwall” as he took on the attackers, throwing stools and glasses at them and using his bare fists. He was stabbed in the head, neck, back and front, and had his fingers cut as he stood up to them.

He was later pictured holding a Learn to Run magazine as he recovered in hospital.

He told The Sun: “They had these long knives and started shouting about Allah. Then it was, ‘Islam, Islam, Islam’.

“Like an idiot I shouted back at them. I thought, ‘I need to take the p*** out of these b******s’.”

“I took a few steps towards them and said, ‘F*** you, I’m Millwall’.

So they started attacking me.”

He added: “I stood in front of them trying to fight them off. Everyone else ran to the back.

“I was on my own against all three of them, that’s why I got hurt so much.

“It was just me, trying to grab them with my bare hands and hold on. I was swinging.

“I got stabbed and sliced eight times. They got me in my head, chest and both hands. There was blood

everywhere.”

Three other Millwall fans were also caught up in the incident on Saturday. Friends have already managed to raise more than £17,000 for Roy after setting up a Just Giving page with the intention initially of raising £500.

Thousands have also signed a petition calling for Roy to be awarded the George Cross for his act of bravery.

Lions fan Grant Merrall has also been recovering in hospital after he was stabbed twice.

“There were so many people just running around the corner where the

“The fear was in everybody’s faces and the police’s. I’m sure people had seen the vests. It would be fear enough seeing someone with a knife but the way they ran was like more than that. It was sheer panic. I had people jumping over the bonnet of the cab. It was like a scene from Godzilla.”

Darren said at that point his instinct as a father kicked in. “I had the two girls in the back and it transpired they had no parents with them so I said ‘right girls, I’ve locked the doors, put your seatbelts on, I’m going to get you out of here’,” he said.

“I dropped them at their hotel and U-turned round. People by then were making their way towards Westminster so I kept the light on and drove straight back into the middle as close as I could get, throwing people in the cab. I did about four of five trips.

“My phone was going mental – I had my mum and everyone ringing me. But I was trying to calm the public down – they were crying and all sorts in the back of the cab.”

ABERMONDSEY-born “hero” cab driver who ferried people to safety from the London Bridge attack has described that night as “a scene out of Godzilla”.

Millwall fan Darren Kenny, 45, was driving his black cab to London Bridge Station when the terrorists’ van began ploughing into people.

The quick-thinking father-of-two sprang into action and began pulling people into the back of his cab and racing them away to safety.

“I was literally on my way to London Bridge Station taxi rank when it all kicked off,” Darren, who now lives in Rochester,

“I believe they were in the Boro Bistro underneath the Barrowboy and Banker and had been moved from there to near the Wheatsheaf and that’s where they saw the blond girl.

“They [the attackers] tried to get into the bar where they were. They told me they were wearing suicide vests as well – but that didn’t come out for a few hours after.”

Darren said he felt humbled by the response he had received for his actions – but that he didn’t consider himself a hero.

“The response was mental,” he said. “I feel like I’ve done a good deed but I don’t really feel like that much of a hero compared to Roy.”

Out of all the horror, our enduring spirit shines through

W

E ALL know all the places – the Barrowboy and Banker, the Southwark Tavern, Black and Blue, Brindisa – can picture every twist and turn around Borough Market and imagine the horror and the terror, transpose ourselves into the places of the victims and think – that could so easily have been me.

In the aftermath of the appalling, sickening events of Saturday night at London Bridge, whilst people around the world will feel the pain of those involved, for the local community, the horror is that much keener, so very vivid.

We’ve heard so many people say: ‘It’s just so close to home’ – but the reality is that it is home. London Bridge, for all of us in Southwark, isn’t a place to pass through or where you catch a train – it’s part of where we live. And when you read of the horrors of Saturday night, you’re thinking – I sat at that bar, I walked down that street, I was due to meet friends there soon. How would I have reacted? Where would I have run? Suddenly the nagging fears about terrorist attacks are right here on our doorstep, front and centre in our thoughts.

And of course, there is far, far worse. People have lost precious loved ones, their close friends, whilst others have suffered life-changing injuries or are still fighting for their lives. The agony is almost unbearable and we grieve for all of them, and for the families of the victims, who came from differing parts of the world.

Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospital, still reeling from the terrorist attack on their doorstep in March, had to go through it all again – and this time are grieving one of their own, brave nurse Kirsty Boden, who was killed as she ran to help people on London Bridge. They, like their colleagues at King’s and other London hospitals, all our emergency services and police, deserve our heartfelt gratitude and admiration.

Ultimately, horrifically, these types of actions have the opposite effect to that intended – they serve only to reinforce our community bonds.

That said, what Westminster, Manchester and

The chance to choose our political leaders, to reaffirm our belief in our democratic system in the face of those who would have it otherwise, should not be something that we give up lightly.

Sister praises man who pelted terrorists with bottles and pint glasses - but says he now wants to step out of the limelight

THE BRAVE Bermondsey boy who alerted dozens of people to run and hide from the rampaging terrorists has been told by his doctor to stay at home, the man’s sister has said.

Construction worker Gerard Vowls was highlighted as a local hero amidst the chaos on Saturday night, after he told a reporter he pelted the terrorists with bottles and pint glasses.

He also witnessed a woman being stabbed multiple times, and coppers shoot the three knife-wielding terrorists dead.

On Monday the 47-year-old of Wolseley Street also recounted his terrifying experience on TV. Now, his sister, Shelly Vowls, has told the News that Gerard is avoiding talking about the ordeal, after his doctor advised him to “try and move forward” which he can’t do whilst the world’s media has been “hounding him” for his story.

“He’s having flashbacks. The more interviews he keeps doing, the more it’s not going to help,” Shelly said.

“The BBC have been hounding him hanging about outside his house.

“Another reporter jumped out from around the corner at a shop near his house. And a Sun reporter stopped him at the Tesco in Jamaica Road.

It’s been bloody ridiculous.

“Gerard is staying at home and waiting for the limelight to go.”

But Gerard and his siblings have also received messages on Facebook from people he helped on the night, who later recognised him on the television.

Shelly said: “Two ladies have said thank you, because had they not heard Gerard screaming, they would only have had seconds to run away to their hotel. They could’ve died.

SPEAKING TO BBC News live from the scene on Saturday night, Gerard said: “There was a geezer lying on the floor going ‘I’ve been stabbed, I’ve been stabbed’.

“I looked at him, I saw blood all down him.

“The next thing, I saw these three Muslim guys run up with knives.

They ran up and stabbed this girl, the three of them.

“I was defenceless, I couldn’t do nothing.

“They attacked her, and then they stabbed another guy.

“They started running up the road.

I started going: ‘everybody run, they’re terrorists, run run run, they’re stabbing everyone’.

“We went down towards NatWest Bank, towards Borough Market, and then we got around there.

“Then they went into [Southwark Tavern]. They stabbed the bouncer.

They were going in all the pubs, all the bars. I can’t remember all of them but they were going in and stabbing everyone.

“And I was going to people ‘run run run’. I was throwing bottles at them, pint glasses, stalls, chairs.

“I tried to help as many people as I could. At the end of the day I was defenceless mate. I had fell over they probably would have killed me.”

Another eyewitness, who Gerard’s family saw interviewed on the news,

told journalists he recognised Gerard as a man barricading people inside a restaurant, and throwing a table at the terrorists. Gerard, who grew up in Waterloo and used to DJ in Borough High Street bar Belushi’s, also helped direct police arriving at

the scene towards the terrorists, and was there to witness armed officers shoot the three attackers dead.

But Shelly said they are still waiting to hear what has happened to the woman whom Gerard witnessed being stabbed. “We don’t know if

“We had nine patients. They all came in

Richenda Browne, a nurse at King’s College Hospital’s emergency trauma department, said it had just gone 10pm when she heard word of the incident.

“Everyone had been doing their job as normal,” Richenda said. “Five seconds later, patients started arriving. Initially there were two. Then fourteen in total.”

The 26-year-old said events unfolded much faster and with less warning that with the Westminster terror attack. “There was an initial adrenaline flow, and the

thought of ‘is this really happening?’. Then you go into your normal mode.

“We didn’t have a lot of information about what was happening outside. So we kept preparing for more and more patients. I work in the trauma department regularly. EMERGENCY CARE staff from the borough’s hospitals have spoken of their gallant efforts to save lives, after London was hit by its second terrorist incident in just two months.

Katherine Henderson, clinical lead at St Thomas’ Hospital’s emergency department, said she had just cycled to her home near The Globe, when she had the three warnings: colleagues messaging her phone, hearing sirens and helicopters down the road, and switching on the news.

Window cleaner who helped fleeing family praises fellow Millwall fans who fought back against attackers

A BERMONDSEY window cleaner and life-long Millwall fan has told how he helped a family fleeing the terror attack – and has praised the Bermondsey spirit shown by the brave few who fought off the terrorists.

The man, who only wanted to be identified by his nickname Marz, was working at his other job as a club promoter, at Southwark Street club Southwark Rooms, when the terrifying attacks unfolded around him.

He ushered people from the street into the club as a panicked crowd of people fled the attackers, and then, when armed police evacuated the venue, he helped calmly get the revellers to safety. But Marz is adamant he is no hero – reserving such praise for fellow Millwall fans Roy Larner and Gerard Vowls, who directly took on the terrorists.

Marz told the News: “For the bad press we get for being Millwall supporters; we are still people at the end of the day.

“Roy was out having a drink, these people have turned up and the geezer’s put his life on the line. He ain’t trained.”

“We are Bermondsey people. It’s how we behave.”

He carried on his praise for their bravery: “What Roy and Gerard done; the amount of lives they saved because it delayed them [the terrorists] from what they wanted to do.

“We are from south London. You don’t leave a man in the field.”

Explaining why he thinks people fought back, he continued: “This one was on our doorstep. What made people retaliate was that it was so close after Manchester; people were like ‘hold up, we ain’t f***ing having this.”

“If you see a geezer attacking a woman, first up, you don’t stand by. It’s

the moral values if you are brought up round here. You don’t hit a woman and you don’t stand by and let a man hit a woman.”

“Roy should get every accolade and whatever award that is out there. This ain’t a man who is a trained military person or policeman. He has just got his own courage, his Millwall heart and he went at them.”

Describing how he saw the events happen, Marz said he first started hearing reports of a stabbing, and thought it was related to the Champions League final that was on that night.

“We started hearing gunshots. People were saying it was fireworks. I knew it wasn’t fireworks, living in Bermondsey,” he said.

Describing the moment he rescued a family from the street, as ‘a swarm’ of people surged away from the attacks, he continued: “This guy called Adrian was 6’4”; the fear that was in his face made me react. I said ‘get in here, get in here’.

There was about five of them. It didn’t dawn on him until five or ten minutes of getting in and he just grabbed me and started crying.”

Explaining his actions, he said: “A lion always looks after his pride. The people [in the club] are my pride. Being the main lion, I looked after them.”

“On the actual night, the hardest thing for me was my daughter texting me. I couldn’t reply back to let her know I was safe,” he said.

Disputing that he should be hailed a hero for his actions, Marz said: “The most important thing is that I’m a father.”

He added: “100% Roy and Gerard are heroes.”

Talking about the attackers, he said: “This ain’t about religion. These people are fundamentally sick. They are doing this during Ramadan. That’s how you know they are not true Muslims.”

“We locked the door and decided we should carry on as normal. We thought it would be best to keep the music going and keep people happy.”

A BERMONDSEY DJ has told the News how he helped keep a bar full of 80 revellers calm while the terror attack unfolded just up the road.

Lee’s wife Bee Speirs – who spoke to the News as she visited Borough High Street to lay flowers – said they also took friends home who were stranded. She said: “I took a few friends home and we had them stay at ours because there was a 45 minute wait for Ubers and taxis.

“We didn’t get much sleep. We stayed up watching it on the news.”

Bermondsey boy organises walk to ‘pay respects’

Robert ‘Bobby’ Boyd, of Blue Anchor Lane, told the News: “We’re going to meet at 3pm on the bridge.

“We would be happy for people to

Cabbie describes journey through Borough as he went to rescue wife

A TAXI driver who rushed into the scene of the Borough terror attack to rescue his wife and two strangers has likened it to the 7/7 bombings.

Matt Newell, 44, was working in Park Lane on Saturday night when he received a frantic phone call from his wife Laura.

The 41-year-old mother had been out with two friends in Waterloo and called Matt at about 10pm to tell him she was walking towards London Bridge to head home.

But just five minutes later the taxi driver received another call from his wife who said there had been a terrorist attack.

“There was a different tone to her voice and she said ‘I think there’s some sort of terrorist attack here’,” said Matt, who lives in Surrey and has worked as a taxi driver for sixteen years.

“She said she was at Borough High Street and that a taxi driver had just come up to her and said ‘you’ve got to get out of here fast, you need to run, there’s been a terrorist attack and a policeman has been stabbed’ so they started to panic then and so did other people.

“They started running and I was on the phone to her and then she said she had to run and the police were there and she’d phone me back.”

The next time Laura called, she said she could hear shooting.

“I could hear police officers in the background shouting as well giving them directions, it was a bit crazy to be honest,” said Matt.

“By the second phone call I was at Waterloo and I could see police and ambulances coming from everywhere.

“There were normal vehicles with sirens on top and I knew then it was serious so I started heading towards Borough and roads were beginning to be blocked off.

“I noticed police just jumping out of a van and going to a back street bar and clearing everyone out of there within seconds.

“I could see people wandering around and the fear in their faces.

People didn’t know what was really happening because you didn’t know where you could encounter them [the attackers] and they were

Matt directed his wife and her friends to his taxi parked on the outside of the cordon after they reached Borough Station.

But just as they were pulling away, the taxi driver spotted a couple and told them to get in.

“As we were driving away a couple were near me and the woman didn’t have any shoes on,” said Matt.

“She had fear in her face and I told them to get in the cab and drove them away from any sort of danger.

“The lady couldn’t speak, she was so shocked. Her husband was explaining that they were staying at London Bridge at a hotel and they saw the van running over people and they just ran and left whatever they had.

“We dropped them a few miles down the road for some safety and I dropped my wife and her friends home.

“I think the couple lived in Wandsworth but were staying in [central] London for an anniversary or something.”

Matt said he had worked in 2005 during the 7/7 bombings and that the London Bridge attack felt similar.

“It [the London Bridge attack] was scary and worrying because my wife was within the area where it was all happening so from a personal view it was particularly scary although 2005 was a surreal day,” he said.

“We’ve got a nine-year-old son who was with my brother and his wife at the time [on Saturday] and we just played it down that she [Laura] wasn’t that near.”

Foodbank manager saw terrorists on bridge, and thanks homeless man who helped her

AN AYLESBURY Estate foodbank manager has told how she saw the terrorists’ white van mow down pedestrians on London Bridge on Saturday night.

Sister Catherine Msoni, 48, was waiting for a bus outside Southwark Cathedral at 9.45pm that night, when the white van came speeding over the bridge.

Sr Catherine told the News that among the people hit by the van – as it “zigzagged” from left to right – was a young blond woman, who she believed was 30-year-old Christine Archibald, named on Monday as one of the deceased.

“There was this white van that came from the other side, really speeding,” Sr Catherine said.

“I heard people screaming, so I looked up and suddenly on the left the white van was running through people.

“I thought ‘oh my God, he has lost control’ and I started screaming. But he was actually rushing to hit into people. Then I realised.”

She said: “a lady with blond hair… fell on the floor very close to me. I saw her get hit at the end of the bridge by the traffic lights by the Cathedral.

“The woman was lying there, she was not moving and not breathing. I remember telling the police ‘I don’t think she’s breathing’.”

Having seen news reports that

Canadian Ms Archibold was the first to be named among the terrorists’ victims, she said: “I think she might be the one, yes… People were trying to resuscitate her – this lovely blond girl. She looked quite young, maybe in her twenties or thirties.”

Further down the road towards Borough High Street “you could see people on the ground. No movement.

It was a very sad site.”

She saw the van swerve off and “hit into a pole by the Cathedral”.

“And I think [the attackers] came out and started chasing people into the market,” she said.

“I didn’t actually see the three men.

But I did see one guy who was just running in the high road. He started running. He looked like an Asian guy in a white t-shirt.

“I grabbed my phone and I rang the police… I was crying and screaming.

“The police asked me what was happening and I saw ‘oh my God there’s this crazy guy with a white van just running into people’.

“They told me ‘just calm down, calm down’.”

Sr Catherine said a single ambulance was the first to arrive on the scene, and armed police and CID came in eight minutes. They were “coming from everywhere”, and were yelling at people to “run and take cover”.

“We heard a noise like a ‘bom bom bom’,” she said. “I didn’t know if it was gunshots. It was very disturbing, very confusing.

“There was a lot of police. It was hard for me to tell, but there were so many police. They were running towards the scene and then others

were encouraging us to run away.”

She fell on her knee as she was trying to run, but was helped to her feet by a homeless man who regularly visits Sr Catherine’s Divine

Rescue foodbank in Thurlow Street, and had accompanied her to the Cathedral that night.

Together they kept running to the north side of the bridge, towards Monument.

Once at a safe distance, they boarded a bus towards Aldgate.

“We just went and sat inside the bus. We were just scared and nervous and everyone was looking at each other because you don’t know who is who. Everything happened so fast.”

When she at last returned to her home in Ilford, at about 2:30am, she was there alone.

“It was just me by myself. I phoned my friends and family to let them know what happened,” She said.

“I hardly slept to be honest, because I was watching what was happening until 5 or 6am until I dozed off.

“Later in the day the police called me and I said I couldn’t talk to them because I needed to sleep. I didn’t know what to say. It’s very disturbing, even just to start the story. It’s very hard.”

As the manager of the Divine Rescue foodbank, located at the

Thurlow Lodge Community Hall, Sr Catherine knew she had dozens of homeless people who needed her help.

“I didn’t come to work yesterday because I was in shock, so the others opened up and served breakfast. We had 80 people come here for food.”

But by Monday, having still felt like the shock had “not yet hit me” Sr Catherine was back at the foodbank and helping her clients, despite saying she was “still having flashbacks”.

“It makes you realise your time on earth is not permanent and it makes you appreciate your life that much more. I have just been praying.

Praying and praying to make me feel better.”

Most of all, she was keen to praise the homeless man who helped her to her feet after she fell to the ground whilst trying to flee across the bridge – Zbigniew Mikolaj Niejadlik, who is from Poland, and cannot speak English.

“My homeless friend was exceptionally kind. But [asking for] help is not [in] his language, he just acts kindly.

“I wish someone could give him a home.”

‘Bleeding to death’ outside Mudlark EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS

TWO EYE-WITNESSES told the News of their horror as they found a young woman ‘bleeding to death’ outside one pub with more injured inside.

Luke Beau and Harry McCarthy were unaware of the savagery unfolding until they came across the woman in an alleyway by the Mudlark pub below London Bridge, but within moments the scale of the attack became horrifyingly real.

“No one knew what had happened, it had just happened. We were like – is that a body? It just looked like a bundle outside.

And she was breathing like just one laboured breath, like not enough breaths,” Luke told the News.

“Blood was everywhere. She was all stabbed in her back. She had a slice in her arm and then her friends were there. When they ran out they were all over her. I rang the ambulance. We stayed there until the police came, armed police.”

The two friends were on the way to Nandos after enjoying an afternoon out watching the Champions League final in the area near their Bermondsey home.

Within minutes the chaotic scenes around London Bridge were beamed across the globe as yet another terror attack was relayed to the world, the third in the UK since March. At first viewers were horrified to hear of an almost identical attack to that of the Westminster Bridge killings just weeks before, with reports of a speeding van hitting pedestrians on the bridge at 10.08pm.

However, it then became clear that the suspects had jumped out of the van, wearing what police later described as hoax explosive vests and went on a killing spree targeting the area’s busy bars.

“Oh they must have been moments away from us,” Harry said.

“As we looked in the pub they were all just eating their dinner, laughing and joking.” But within moments everything changed. “Everyone was running. The police came, they told us to get inside the

pub, then there is another girl on the floor with her throat sliced in the pub. From what we heard afterwards it sounded like it had happen outside. She’d run in.

“They got us all upstairs in the pub and told us to get away from the windows. We were stuck up there for 20 minutes, then the police kept coming in and said ‘look you are safe there are armed police outside’, and then they evacuated us out the back way and there could have been another girl we saw, or perhaps it was the same girl.”

“If she survived then that’s a miracle from what I see,” Luke added. “I’m 29 – she must have been younger, she was younger than 30. That poor girl.”

Both men were in shock from their ordeal as they told the News their story just an hour after leaving the Mudlark pub and believe that they witnessed the woman die in front of them: “She died in front of us.

Barman first to direct police to the knifing spree in Borough Market EYEWITNESS ACCOUNTS

A BARMAN who ran straight towards the terrorist knifing spree was one of the first at the scene and re-directed police racing to deal with the carnage on London Bridge back towards the massacre unfolding in Borough Market.

The 41-year-old Bermondsey fatherof-two, who works at the Old King’s Head just off Borough High Street, was unaware of the true scale of the attack when he responded to a customer shouting out at the pub that someone had been stabbed at the nearby market.

“I was in the pub and somebody came in and said ‘someone had a knife on the high street’. I stepped outside and there was a group of people - one of them said that he ran down past the Southwark Tavern into the Borough Market. As far as I knew they were talking about one guy with a knife. I rang the police 999, there was no answer.”

The barman, who’d rather not be named, remembers the exact time he made that call. It was 10.12pm. We now know that the van struck pedestrians on the bridge at 10.08pm and that by 10.16pm the terrorists had been shot down.

In these eight minutes three terrorists had unleashed a bloodbath upon people enjoying a night out. For this one barman, unable to get through to the police, he instinctively rushed to help.

“I ran across the road,” he told the News, “to where Leon’s is, it’s right on the corner of Borough Market.

“There was a gentleman on the floor, he had a very significant wound. I don’t know whether it was his neck or mouth.

There was a lot of blood on the floor.

“At that point I noticed the police were going on towards London Bridge. I didn’t know there was anything happening on London Bridge, so I didn’t know obviously where they were going.

“I got into the middle of the road and started directing police down to Borough Market. Two police cars

stopped. One woman police officer jumped out and asked me what I’d seen.

I said there was a man down there in the market with a knife and there was a man on the floor down there who needed help.

“There were then five or six police cars heading towards London Bridge. I obviously thought they were going to go over London Bridge, so I directed them down into Borough Market as well.”

Heading back into the pub the true horror of what was unfolding around him became sickeningly clear and he heard gun shots behind him. “As soon as I saw the guy on the floor I did think it was a terrorist attack. It’s horrific, just horrific.”

Many hours later, at around 4.30am, the police rang the barman back on his mobile to ask why he’d called 999, after they had spent the entire night saving lives, evacuating people from bars, pubs and restaurants, as well as killing the three terrorists, who were intent on butchering as many people as they could.

Salvation Army and Red Cross raced to the scene

HELP AND refuge for residents, paramedics and police caught up in the chaos of Saturday’s terror attack was given by the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Leader of the Southwark Salvation Army church in Elephant and Castle, Ashish Pawar, said: “Being so close

to the scene, we just wanted to do something to help so we opened up our church and community centre at 11pm that night.

“Around 25 police officers came for refreshments, seven people slept here, including people who were not able to go back to their hotels, and a number of others just needed to have a hot drink, chat and charge their phones so they could call family and

friends.”

And early on Sunday morning, Southwark Council and the Red Cross established a relief centre at South Bank University’s sport academy.

Emma Spragg, director of crisis response for the Red Cross, told the News: “We got the call from our emergency response team at 6am [Sunday June 4] and we were at the centre within an hour.

“Southwark Council were asked to set up the centre by the Met Police and we assisted Southwark Council.”

From their base near Tower Bridge Road, Red Cross volunteers dispatched a van full of supplies and a team of six volunteers, who worked from the early hours until 3pm, when a new team came in to replace them.

“We offered them somewhere to be safe and warm and dry, and food and

drink, and things for people to wash, and camp beds to sleep on,” Emma said.

“It was about having a calm quiet place and we had volunteers offering emotional support and people to talk to.”

A dozen or so people took shelter at the relief centre, until they were able to find accommodation with family and friends.

EIGHT PEOPLE are confirmed dead following the terror attack on Saturday.

Australian CHRISTINE ARCHIBALD was the first victim confirmed dead following the attack.

The 30-year-old had been on holiday in London and tragically died in her fiancé’s arms after being struck by the speeding van.

In a statement, Ms Archibald's family said they had lost a "beautiful, loving daughter and sister".

"She had room in her heart for everyone and believed strongly that every person was to be valued and respected,” they said.

“She lived this belief working in a shelter for the homeless until she moved to Europe to be with her fiancé.

“She would have had no understanding of the callous cruelty that caused her death.”

Guy’s Hospital theatre recovery nurse KIRSTY BODEN, 28, died after running to help people injured on the bridge.

most outgoing, kind and generous person who loved to help people”.

“Kirsty was loved and adored by her family, friends and boyfriend,” they said. “Helping people was what she loved to do in her job as a nurse and in her daily life.

“As she ran towards danger, in an effort to help people on the bridge, Kirsty sadly lost her life. We are so proud of Kirsty’s brave actions which demonstrate how selfless, caring and heroic she was, not only on that night, but throughout all of her life.”

Paying tribute, Dame Eileen Sills, chief nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Kirsty was an outstanding nurse and a hugely valued member of the staff team in theatres recovery, described by her colleagues as ‘one in a million’ who always went the extra mile for the patients in her care.”

French waiter ALEXANDRE PIGEARD has been named as one of the victims by French media.

It is believed the 27-year-old from Colleville-Montgomery, in Normandy, was a waiter at the Boro Bistro near Borough Market.

He was reportedly stabbed in the neck in front of friends.

SEBASTIEN BELANGER has also been confirmed dead by

French media.

The 36-year-old, who lived in Leytonstone and worked as a chef at the Coq d’Argent restaurant, had been at the Barrowboy and Banker in Borough High Street with two friends.

Sebastien’s girlfriend of eight months, Gerda Bennet, flew back to London from her holiday in Malta to desperately search for him.

Speaking to the News on Sunday, the 22-year-old said Sebastien had last been online at 10pm and she had last exchanged texts with him at about 5pm.

Gerda posted a picture of the couple on Facebook early on Tuesday morning with the words “mon amour”.

Australian SARA ZELENAK, who had been working as an au pair in Herne Hill, has also been confirmed dead by her grieving mother.

The 21-year-old had tickets to the Ariana Grande concert in Manchester but ended up not going and also narrowly avoided the Westminster attack.

Her mother, who had flown to London to find her daughter, posted on Facebook yesterday, Wednesday: "Sara Zelenak is confirmed dead, they found her body and has DNA tests

confirmed,” she wrote. “Thank you for all the overwhelming love and support from everyone.”

Her best friend, Sam Hetherington, also paid tribute, writing: "Our beautiful Sara Zelenak,” she wrote. “The closest friend to Bea and I since we were in Year 7.

“You brought so much joy into our lives, to me and Bea for so long and also to Mum and Dad, who took you under their wing like no other.

I can't believe we don't get to grow old together.”

The sister of JAMES MCMULLAN fears the 32-yearold business is dead after police found his bank card on a body.

James was last known to be smoking outside of the Barrowboy and Banker just minutes before the van ploughed into people.

Speaking to the News the day after the attack, James’ sister Melissa McMullan, 30, said he had been outside the pub smoking a cigarette and waiting for his friends after bouncers refused to let him back in.

“I think he was out for a bit of a special occasion because he was out with his friends from school and he doesn’t see them very often because he is always working,” she said.

“This is the first time in months my brother has been out.”

Police also fear Frenchman XAVIER THOMAS may have been thrown into the River Thames during the attack.

The 45-year-old had been walking along London Bridge with his girlfriend Christine Delcros, who was badly injured in the attack.

A body was recovered from the river near Limehouse at about 7.44pm on Tuesday by specialist officers from the marine police unit by formal identification had not taken place by the time the News went to press.

“Formal identification has not yet taken place, however Mr. Thomas' next of kin have been informed of this development,” the Met Police said in a statement.

Relatives of Spaniard IGNACIO ECHEVERRIA fear the 39-yearold is dead after he was last seen lying on the pavement after attempting to fight off the attackers with a skateboard.

Relative and journalist Isabel Duran tweeted that he was “in heaven with his inseparable skateboard”, however although he has now been missing for four days, there has been no official confirmation of his death. Although as the News went to press on early Wednesday afternoon police put the death poll at eight.

Many revellers were out in Borough to watch the Champions League final, which had not long finished.

The van then crashed outside of the Barrowboy and Banker pub on the foot of London Bridge.

The three attackers leapt from the van and ran into Borough Market. They entered pubs and restaurants and stabbed people at random. There were three reported stabbings inside Black and Blue restaurant, El Pastor Mexican restaurant, and Brindisa, and outside Roast restaurant, and the Southwark Tavern. A badly injured woman was found outside the Mudlark pub under London Bridge, whilst another staggered into the pub.

Police received the first reports that a van had smashed into six or more pedestrians on London Bridge.

The first London Ambulance Service paramedics and specialist response teams arrive.

The attackers were shot dead by eight firearms officers using 50 rounds outside the Wheatsheaf pub in Stoney Street. Police began evacuating a large area of Borough High Street and Tooley Street.

The Barking council flat of one dead terrorist, Khuram Shazad Butt, was raided by counterterror police. A total of twelve arrests were made in the local area.

THE TERRORISTS who killed eight people and injured dozens have been named by police, while two men continue to be questioned.

Police have released the identities of the three men who mowed down innocent pedestrians on London Bridge with a van just before 10pm on Saturday, June 3, before crashing outside a pub and stabbing people in Borough Market.

Detectives have named the three men as Khuram Shazad Butt, 27, and Rachid Redouane, 30, both from Barking, and Youssef Zaghba, 22, from east London, who is yet to be formally identified.

Butt was a British citizen who was born in Pakistan. He was known to police and MI5, however police say there was no intelligence to suggest that this attack was

being planned. He is reported to have worked as a trainee customer services assistant for Transport for London up to October last year, based at London Bridge, but also working at Westminster and Canada Water.

Redouane had claimed to be Moroccan and Libyan and also used a different name and date of birth. He was not known to police.

Zaghba is believed to have been an Italian national of Moroccan descent. He was not a police or MI5 subject of interest.

All three men involved in the attack were confronted and shot dead by armed officers within eight minutes of the first call.

Officers arrested a 30-year-old man on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of terrorist acts at an address in Ilford at about 1.30am yesterday, Wednesday. He has been taken into

custody at a south London police station under the Terrorism Act 2000 and a search of the property continues.

Butt is reported to have worked as a trainee customer services assistant for Transport for London up to October last year, based at London Bridge, but also working at Westminster and Canada Water

A 27-year-old man was also arrested under the Terrorism Act at an address in Barking at about 8.05am on Tuesday, June 6. A search warrant was executed at an address in Barking and inquiries continue.

Twelve others who were arrested under

the investigation have all been released without charge.

Work is ongoing to understand more about them, their connections and whether they were assisted or supported by anyone else.

It is now known that the van carrying the three terrorists ploughed into people on London Bridge at 9.58pm on Saturday, June 3.

It had been a warm and pleasant day and many revellers were out in the popular night spot in Borough to watch the Champions League final which had not long finished.

The van then crashed outside of the Barrowboy and Banker pub on Borough High Street, not far from London Bridge Station.

The three attackers leapt out of the van and ran into Borough Market, entering pubs and restaurants and stabbing people

at random.

They were shot dead in Stoney Street at 10.16pm.

Both incidents were declared ‘terrorist incidents’ by 12.25am.

Seven people were confirmed dead by police on Sunday, and on Tuesday the body of an eighth person who was believed to have fallen from the bridge into the river was recovered. Forty eight people were taken to hospital, including two Millwall fans who suffered stab wounds during the attack, three Southwark police officers, and a British Transport Police officer believed to have been the first on the scene armed only with a baton.

Hundreds gathered in Potter’s Field Park, off Tooley Street, on Monday, not far from where the attack happened, to lay flowers and remember those affected by the tragedy.

A sea of people gathered at Potter’s Field Park on Monday to pay their respects to the eight people who had died and the 48 who were injured.

“London stands in defiance against this cowardly attack on our city, our people, our values and our way of life,” Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said to those gathered at the vigil.

“As the Mayor of London, I want to send a clear message to the sick and evil extremists who commit these hideous crimes. We will defeat you.

You will not win.

“And as a proud and patriotic British Muslim, I say this: you do not commit these disgusting acts in my name.”

A moment’s silence was held to remember those involved in the attack before flowers were laid as a memorial.

Among those who went to the vigil to pay their respects was Kristina Mansbridge, who founded all-female choir Bermondsey Voices.

The 45-year-old said she had been in Borough Market earlier in the day before the attack.

“I want to show my solidarity and honour the victims because it could’ve been any one of us being in the wrong place at the wrong time,” she said. “It’s the fact that it just happened round the corner.”

King’s College students Brittany Briscoe, 21, Asha Cunningham, 20, and Jenny Donovan, 21, also paid their respects.

The biomedicine students live near to London Bridge, in Weston Road, and said they could hear sirens on Saturday as the horror unfolded.

“We had just been at Borough Market that day,” said Brittany. “We saw the news on social media and could hear the sirens.

“One of our friends had to come stay at our place because he lived on Borough High Street.

“We just want to pay our respects.

It’s just nice for everyone to get together and show the community spirit. It’s a bit too close to home and it’s kind of scary.”

Asha, who is from the United States, said her father was so worried he wanted her to leave London.

Sarah Hill, who works in bereavement care, said she wanted to show that she openly disagreed with the evil of the attack.

“I tend to immediately think of the families of people who’ve died and just think about in Manchester those parents who’ve lost their children and all that hope and cutting

someone’s life short is so evil,” said the 33-year-old. “This is our city and people have lost their lives doing stuff we do and take for granted every weekend. We are coming here to remember them and that they are just like us.

“It’s a case of the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Charlotte Priestley, 32, from Twickenham, said she felt a bit nervous walking to work in central London on Monday morning, but that she wasn’t scared.

“I’m feeling quite emotional seeing the people coming together,” she said. “But I wouldn’t say I’m scared because I don’t think you should be.

Love has to win, love spreads.”

“I’m originally from near Manchester and that [the Manchester attack] really resonated with me because I remember my parents being stood in that foyer waiting for me coming out of a concert so not being able to be there and to do something made me want to feel that unity now that London is my city and come together with others and remember and pay my respects to those for everything that’s happened over the last months,” added 28-yearold Emily Cookson-Williams, also from Twickenham.

With one month to go until the twelfth anniversary of the 7/7, some survivors and witnesses to that horrific attack wished to reach out to anybody who felt affected by the recent act of terrorism to strike London.

Amy Washington, a survivor of the tube bombing between King’s Cross and Russell Square, said: “I want to let them know that they are not alone. You do have your dark days but there is help available for anyone who needs it.

“I felt that I was alone at the beginning for a while and when the group formed (a network of 7/7 victims) it was like I felt a sense of relief.”

Sudhesh Dahad, who was evacuated from the underground explosion at Russell Square, shared the same feelings. “I can remember sharing my story a few months after the bombings with witnesses of the same attack. I had loads of support from my friends and family but they couldn’t relate and give me the feedback that I needed. It was the first point where I felt that I was not alone,” he said.

The London bombings of July 7 2005 struck three underground trains and a bus. Fifty six people from

eighteen nationalities were killed, including the four suicide bombers, and 784 were injured.

Dave Smith was at Tavistock Square when the bus was bombed.

“There are people out there who

understand. You are not alone.

Everyone feels for your situation but they are not able to relate to your experience. It’s helped me a lot to share with people who understand,” he said.

The victims of the 7/7 bombings have received help from the Survivors Assistance Network (SAN), which provides free practical and emotional support to people affected by a terrorist incident.

Public’s response ‘first class’ says top cop

THE BOROUGH commander of Southwark police has praised his officers, including three local bobbies injured in Saturday night’s terror attack, and called the public’s response “first class”.

Taken to hospital from the night of violence were one British Transport Police officer, and three Southwark Police officers, including one who was off-duty.

Speaking exclusively to the News, detective chief superintendent Simon Messinger said: “The off-duty officer is still in hospital and has undergone surgery. He is very much in our thoughts and is still being looked

after.

“The two on-duty officers: one has been discharged after having stiches to his head wound. The other [who was plain-clothed] was discharged on the night.

“These events affect people in different ways. We’re going to make sure everyone gets a chance to rest and [be] looked after.”

Mr Messinger called the response from local people “outstanding”.

“A couple of ladies came into Peckham Police Station and delivered the largest delivery of doughnuts I have ever seen in my life. It was very touching and it was appreciated by everybody,” he said.

“I’ve heard stories of businesses taking them and

letting them use their facilities, offering refreshments and offering them food. I can’t thank the public enough. They have been really supportive. The public have been absolutely first class.”

He added: “In and around Borough Market there is a large police presence while the investigation continues. At the crime scene you will notice there are a lot of officers.

Some are officers who don’t normally work in the borough.

But our officers will be out and about and doing as much as possible and speaking to the local community about what’s going on. We will make ourselves as visible as possible – to reassure people and to

answer people’s questions.”

Mr Messinger also complimented his officers who streamed in to help during the borough’s time of need.

“The good thing about police officers,” he said, “is that when events like this happen, they want to get out and protect the public. We have plenty of extra staff calling in and offering to help. Our people want to come in.

“But we understand there needs to be enough staff afterwards as well.

There’s now been a period of time where we’ve extended officers’ shifts – but that was only so that officers who were working on the night could have time to rest, and we’re back to normal shifts already. We will make sure that support is there for them all and they get what they need individually. There is and has been sufficient police all the time.”

SOUTHWARK MOSQUES leaders have vowed help “tackle all forms extremism” and spoken together to condemn Saturday’s London Bridge terror attack.

The mayor of Southwark, councillor Charlie Smith, also said he fears the attack could provoke a “blacklash” against the Muslim community.

In the first meeting of its kind ever seen in Southwark, Islamic community leaders met on Monday with mayor Smith, and deputy mayor Jamille Mohammed, to give a united response.

Their joint statement said: “We, the leaders of Southwark Mosques, stand together here in Southwark as a united community in solidarity with fellow Londoners. We are shocked and saddened by the recent appalling attacks at Borough Market and London Bridge. Our deepest sympathies and prayers go out to all the victims, their families and their loved ones.

“Such barbaric attacks have no place in Islam and we must not let this cause division and hatred among our

communities. We stand united, shoulder by shoulder and condemn the attacks in London, Manchester and Westminster in the strongest way possible.

“Here in Southwark, we the mosque leaders pledge to build a stronger bond between our organisations and to work closely with authorities to identify and tackle all forms of extremism. This

hatred will not defeat our shared values, our way of life and the civilisation of this country. We pay tribute to the emergency services and fellow Londoners who have worked hard after the horrific incident on Saturday.”

Mayor Smith said: “We fear a backlash to what’s happened. That’s the last thing we want. And we want you

What we are doing today is a show of strength and solidarity, to show that the majority of Muslims in this country will not tolerate the sort of thing that’s gone on, and we condemn it wholeheartedly.”

Mr Coyle added that he visited the Nasfat Mosque on Sunday – an engagement he already had booked to coincide with their celebration of Ramadan.

“I heard their expressions of condemnation of the individuals who carried out these murders. I thought it was important to attend that engagement with them,” Neil said.

“Even during Ramadan [the attackers] sought to kill civilians. They are not Muslims.”

Via a statement on his website, Mr Hughes said: “Along with all other local residents and visitors, I am angry and sickened by this attack on our wonderful communities here in London Bridge and Borough.

“I condemn these evil acts without reservation. Last night has made us even more aware of the bravery, commitment and dedication of our emergency services.

“Millions will pray today for those killed or injured, for their families and

“In the near future, we will again need to review national, London and local policies and practice to minimise risk and maximise the chance of preventing future attacks.

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL leader Peter John, and three local councillors for the London Bridge and Borough area, have offered their condolences to locals caught up in Saturday’s terror attack.

In a statement published on Sunday, Cllr John said: “This was a pointless and horrific attack which has caused real and great harm but will achieve nothing. As ever, the emergency services have responded heroically, and I would like to thank them for all they have done and continue to do following these awful events.

“Just one attack of this sort is devastating, but as a city and a country we have suffered far too much in recent months. Southwark is an amazing borough and we are strongest when we stand together, support one another, and choose unity in the face of hatred.”

The Lib Dem councillors for Cathedrals ward: David Noakes, Maria, Linforth-Hall and Adele Morris said in a joint statement: “Our

“We know that some residents were unable to go home yesterday and that other residents saw and heard the incident as it unfolded.

“We would also like to thank the police and other emergency services for the outstanding and professional way they dealt with the terror attack and for their ongoing work in regards to the investigation and the care and support they are providing to those injured in this attack.

“As ward councillors for the area we are confident that the strength of the community in SE1 will ensure that we come through this terrible event, and that this special part of London will remain the unique and vibrant place it is in this great city.

THE LIBERAL Democrat and Labour candidates for Bermondsey and Old Southwark both condemned Saturday night’s terror attack in Borough.

Labour’s Neil Coyle said the actions of local people recalled the spirit shown in World War Two. The Lib Dems’ Sir Simon Hughes said the general election “must not be derailed”, as this would have been what the Saturday night terrorists would have wanted.

Standing at the Borough High Street police cordon on Sunday, Mr Coyle told the News: “First of all our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives and the 28 people in hospital.

“The local and London spirit came through, with people offering free rooms in their hotels and homes, offering to charge phones so those affected to keep in touch with their friends and loved ones.

“There’s something quite special about all those people who wanted to volunteer and all the help put on for those who couldn’t get home.

“The Second World War couldn’t dim the spirit here, and we saw that spirit again that night.

“The police deserve our respect and support. How quickly they intervened, and their work to keep us safe. I would support [The Met] getting more resources or whatever they need to keep us safe.”

LOVING TRIBUTES have been paid to one of the 22 victims of the Manchester bombing, Martyn Hett, by his former tutors at London College of Communication.

Mr Hett, 29, graduated from the university campus in Elephant and Castle in 2013 with a BA (Hons) degree in Media and Cultural Studies.

“He stood out from the rest of his class, was extremely gregarious, vivacious and colourful, with a big smile and a genuine thirst for life,” said Lab Ky Mo, Contemporary Media Cultures lecturer, in a statement on the university’s website.

“He clearly was loved and will be dearly missed by many. The one single consolation to his life having been cut so tragically short is that he lived his short life to the maximum, squeezing enjoyment and happiness from every second of his life right up to, I’m certain, his very last.”

Mr Hett had a staggering online following, with more than 14,000 Twitter followers, and a total of 6.87m views of his videos on Vyne.

The PR manager was the winner of an episode of the Channel 4’s Come Dine With

Me, and recently appeared on Tattoo Fixers.

Mr Hett was half Turkish and came from a Muslim family. A national newspaper last week published an interview with Mr Hett’s brother Dan, who has called for people to stop using

Specialist cancer centre opens

SOUTHWARK: Guy’s Hospital has opened a new regional centre to specialise in pelvic cancers and complex surgery.

Guy's Cancer Pelvic Surgical Centre will care for patients from the capital and across south east England, and specialise pelvic cancers such as prostate, ovarian and testicular cancer. Teams from the different surgical specialties will now see patients jointly in clinics and have regular theatre days for shared operating sessions, which will improve treatment and outcomes for pelvic cancer patients needing complex surgery. The only other Pelvic Surgical Centres in England are in Bristol and Exeter.

Two housing associations merge

SOUTHWARK: Two housing associations have merged to become one of the largest in the country – with hundreds of homes across the borough.

AmicusHorizon and Viridian amalgamated to form a new organisation called Optivo which has more than 1,350 homes in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

The organisation will provide over 44,000 homes for 90,000 people in London, southeast England and the Midlands, and will have an annual turnover of £306 million.

MILLWALL FANS raised more than £2,500 for local cancer charity, the MumMum Foundation, on Saturday night at the Lions TV End of Season Dinner.

The fundraiser was hosted by Lions TV founder, Dan Goodwin, and was attended by former Millwall goalkeeper Tony Warner, and actor and former Millwall centre-back Neil ‘Razor’ Ruddock.

The charity’s founder, Camberwell man Gary Valentine-Fuller, said: “The money will go towards The MumMum Foundation's new mission, taking poorly children, some sadly terminal, to Disneyland.

The musician is apparently a regular at the Indian restaurant in Tower Bridge Road and the likes of the Beckhams and Daniel Craig have also dined there.

LIBERAL DEMOCRATS and Labour have pulled out the big guns – actor Hugh Grant and stand-up comic Eddie Izzard – in a last attempt to woo voters before polling day.

Eddie Izzard was out in Elephant and Castle canvassing for Labour’s Neil Coyle on Friday.

One activist told the News: “This was Izzard's third visit, as he came down twice before during the [2015] election campaign. He specifically asked to come down.”

Meanwhile, Hugh Grant endorsed Lib Dem candidate Simon Hughes at a private function at the Flat Iron Square on Sunday morning.

Although Hugh has said he is not all for the Lib Dems, Labour or Tories, he “admired” Simon Hughes’ work in campaigning for a more accountable newspaper industry in the wake of the phone hacking scandal and the Leveson Inquiry.

MURDER INVESTIGATION AFTER TEENAGER STABBED

SCOTLAND YARD is appealing for help with a murder investigation, after a teenaged boy was savagely stabbed to death in Southampton Way, Peckham.

Seventeen-year-old Abdirahman Mohamed, from Camberwell, was heard yelling for help after being stabbed in the chest on Friday, June 2.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene at 11.15pm, but he was pronounced dead within minutes.

One eyewitness, who worked at the Tesco supermarket metres from the crime scene, told the News: “I saw him shout ‘help me, help me’. Then he collapsed.

“Two people were with the young man – a white lady and a black boy. I thought they were joking around at first.

“Then I saw blood on the floor. And his friend was saying ‘talk to me, talk to me’.

“I saw people park their cars and a bus driver stopped to come and help. People tried to resuscitate him.”

The staff member said he did not catch sight of who had attacked the young man. He added that Mr Mohamed, who

was born in Somalia, had been in the shop only four or five hours before, and would visit regularly.

The street remained cordoned off by police until the following day, with a blue tent was erected outside the Tesco.

Locals and friends of Mr Mohamed have created a shrine of flowers close to the scene, by the junction with Peckham Grove.

A post-mortem examination held at Greenwich Mortuary on June 3 gave the cause of death as a stab wound to the chest. Detective chief inspector Diane Tudway, who leads the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command, said the family were “utterly devastated”. “[They] cannot understand why he has been taken from them in what is such a

senseless act of violence. The motive at this time is unclear and we are retaining an open mind as to why Abdirahman was stabbed,” DCI Tudway said.

“We want to hear from anyone who saw the attack. If you were driving along Southampton Way, near the Tesco, do you have a vehicle that has a Dashcam?

Images from Dashcams can be helpful in understanding what has happened and helpful in identifying people present in the locality.”

A CANCER survivor says she has put up with a leak in her council flat on and off for 22 years – and now she’s had enough.

Frances Stoatt, 66, says her downstairs toilet is now unusable because of a leak coming down into her two-floor flat in Marden Square, Bermondsey.

The downstairs toilet in her flat is frequently flooded and the water leaks into cupboards containing electrics in her flat, she claims.

The great-grandmother, who has lived on the estate for 31 years, said she had reported the leak to the council on numerous occasions but it had never been fixed.

“The stack pipe in my bathroom floods me out on and off,” said Ms Stoatt, who was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer on her right lung and later suffered a cardiac arrest in November 2015.

“The last time the council came out and put a camera down the pipe was in 2012. Now they won’t come out.

“We went for arbitration in February 2016 and we’ve continued to be flooded. Unless it fills my buckets up within ten seconds they [the council] won’t come out.

“I’ve already had the bathroom and toilet decorated twice.

“My downstairs toilet is out of use.

wet and it’s now dripping into the cupboard on the outside landing which contains the telephone wires and the other side in my kitchen is where the electrics are.”

Ms Stoatt said the damp from the leak had affected her next-door neighbour’s bedroom and caused the wallpaper in the room to fall down. “It’s absolutely horrendous,” she said.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for housing, said the latest leak in Ms Stoatt’s flat was a separate issue to previous leaks and that the council had contacted the leaseholders of the property above to fix the problem.

“I am sorry to hear that there is another leak reported at Ms Stoatt’s property and I can assure her that housing officers will do everything they can to find a solution quickly,” she said in a statement.

“There have been historical issues with leaks in this flat and delays to repairs due to the various problems accessing them, and I can appreciate how frustrating it must be to find another one.

“We have confirmed this is a different issue to the previous leak as it is coming from the properties above, which are owned by leaseholders.

“Our team is speaking to the leaseholders to get access and fix the problem as soon as possible and we can only ask Ms Stoatt to bear with us and apologise again for any inconvenience caused.”

Walworth to get a new Manor

WALWORTH: The company behind trendy boozers like The Elephant and Castle, the East Dulwich Tavern, and The Gregorian in Bermondsey are to open a new pub in Walworth Road.

Antic London published on its website that it will open The Manor of Walworth in the currently vacant Georgian building at 140 Walworth Road, which was formerly used by the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions.

A spokeswoman for Antic told the News: “It is going to be unlike the Elephant and Castle in that it is going to be more of a traditional public house in feel and vibe with local and regional brewers featured on tap and keg.”

The company’s ambition is keep the pubs interior “as close to an old Manor House as possible”. “There will be lots of interesting artefacts on the walls, taxidermy, old paintings etc. There is a lot of exposed brick and some interesting textured walls that have been revealed. There will be lots of lovely old chandeliers, as is fitting to an old Manor House of that period.”

And at the bar, the spokeswoman said the Manor of Walworth will be “supporting great local breweries, great gin selections and a generous wine offering. We’ll also have beer from our own Brewery ‘Volden’ and George Arthur cider which we make in Glastonbury.” A date for its opening is unconfirmed, but the company is aiming for the “end of summer/autumn”.

Help for children affected by stroke

C

hildren and their families can now get help coping with the trauma of childhood stroke thanks to new resources from Evelina London Children’s Hospital and the Stroke Association.

The Childhood Stroke Handbook includes information about what stroke is, how to recover from it, and advice for children on how to talk about their feelings. Four short animations are based on the handbook and bring the advice to life.

Former Evelina London patient, seven-year-old Emily Burgess, and her family, from Greenwich helped to shape the handbook and animations.

Emily was only three when she was referred to Evelina London where specialists diagnosed that she had suffered a stroke.

Emily’s mum, Virginia Burgess, says: “I was completely shocked when I was told the news, and was not even aware that children could have strokes. Emily spent nine days in Evelina London, and it was a bewildering time for her. Luckily Emily made amazing progress and the staff were very supportive.

“Hopefully our experiences can help other young children and families

going through something similar.”

Anne Gordon, Consultant Occupational Therapist in Neurology at Evelina London, says: “Many people think strokes only happen to older people. In fact, around 400 childhood strokes occur in the UK each year – that’s more than one a day. The Child Stroke Project is here for children, young people, and their families, and these resources are the first step in raising awareness of this issue more widely."

Anna Panton, Childhood Stroke Project Manager at the Stroke Association, supports children and families at Evelina London. She says: “The book and animations have been created in collaboration with families affected by stroke in childhood, and the words and images reflect their experiences. They will be a great resource to use when supporting families affected by a stroke diagnosis in childhood - talking to young people affected and helping others to understand their experiences like teachers, friends and classmates."

he London Festival of Architecture is Europe’s biggest annual architecture festival. It runs from 1-30 June 2017 with hundreds of events exploring the theme of “memory”.

Southwark is a fantastic place to live, visit and work. It has many iconic sites, a real depth of diversity and a wonderful community spirit that will not be broken by the few.

• Right to witness the NHS recover the full cost of treatment from health tourists.

• The righto expect those who are allowed to settle in our country to live by our laws and customs.

• Right to a bed in a single-sex ward.

• The right to sit quietly in a public place without having other people’s mobile telephone conversations inflicted upon you.

• The right to refuse to pay Human Rights lawyers out of public funds.

• The right to expect honesty & transparency from our elected members of parliament.

• The right to freedom of speech, even if it offends someone else.

• The right to expect our police force to be properly led and to put our protection above all else.

• The right of victims to be given treatment preferential to that enjoyed by the criminals who attack them.

• The righ to go about your lawful business in a city without being physically assaulted.

• The right to go out in the evening without the fear of being mugged, screamed at or vomited over.

• The right to the decent pension towards which millions of the elderly have contributed to.

• And finally, we wish any future government to confirm the ‘triple lock’, which guarantees to increase the state pension every year whatever is highest between inflation, average earnings or 2.5 per cent. At the moment, this works out at £3.05 a week.

ERE WE go again.

Theresa May has called an early election, despite having a clear majority.

So, what are the key eco-issues facing Southwark & Lambeth? With half of the boroughs on the floodplain and the planet in danger of going over the 1.5C dangerous threshold temperature in the next decade, the climate crisis is THE top issue. The Tory manifesto is disastrous, promising to promote even more UK fossil fuels by reducing their taxes and regulations, whilst increasing them on renewable energies.

Labour are better, banning fracking and promising 60% renewables by 2030 but want to expand Heathrow and spend billions on new roads. Lib Dems also want 60% renewables by 2030 and ban fracking but oppose Heathrow Expansion. The Greens have the most ambitious climate policies. They oppose fracking and Heathrow and will tackle fuel poverty by insulating all homes.

But Brexit is also a huge climate issue, as the Tories are threatening a bonfire of all the climate protections that we democratically agreed with our EU partners. Despite 70% of local voters supporting EU, Labour MPs voted in Parliament for May’s Brexit. Greens & Lib Dems however, believe voters have the right to decide when final Brexit details are known.

The other top Southwark eco-issue is transport pollution. Our parks, schools and streets are all lethally poisoned by vehicles and we have an adult and child inactivity/obesity crisis. The solution is to invest £3 billion a year in a national network of safe cycle-lanes. The Tories & Labour promised a tiny £40 million, Lib Dems £650 million and Greens £2 billion (funded by roads budget).

However, our electoral system is not an opinion poll for our favourite party, but rather a tactical voting system, which means voting for the candidate best placed to form the greenest government we can get. In Vauxhall, it would mean voting Lib Dem to unseat arch-Brexiteer and cycle-lane opponent Kate Hoey, Labour in Streatham, Lib Dem in Southwark & North Bermondsey and Green in both Camberwell & Peckham and Dulwich & West Norwood seats.

So that’s my advice – vote Labour (and Green! and Lib Dem!) depending on where you live.

Vixen of the Vaults Island of screams

HAVING NEVER been to an opera before, walking into The Vaults ‘silent opera’, Vixen, was always going to be somewhat of a surprising evening for me, regardless of what unfolded.

Although, as someone that loves a good drama I did have an inkling that this show would be right up my street, writes Rosie O’Connell...

Daisy Evans, Stephen Higgins and Max Pappenheim have come together to present a gritty and brutal reimagining of the classic Janáček opera, ‘The Cunning Little Vixen’. After arriving 30 minutes early in order to collect headphones, I found myself shuffled into an incredibly cramped bar space, still unsure of what to expect of the evening ahead. A short while later a small band of musicians made their way through the crowd collecting donations for homeless charity ‘Crisis’ with the promise of a rendition of any song for a pound. From this point the show had begun. A tall, imposing man (Ivan Ludlow as Forester) made his way into the audience, soon followed by Rosie Lomas as Vixen, our runaway, homeless heroine. With Vixen begging the audience for help and shelter Forester stepped in and offered her a room for the night. We were off, following the pair down the dark tunnel of The Vaults. This dystopian setting has never felt more appropriate.

surrounded her; Lomas’s energy, spirit and soaring soprano vocals keeping the piece a hopeful distance from despair.

The headphones add an interesting dimension to the experience, with a prerecorded orchestral track playing into them throughout the show, backed up seamlessly by the band, now scattered amongst the audience, playing live. As well as this, the vocals are streamed into your headphones too, creating a full surround-sound in your head. That said, there were a few moments where I popped my headphones off just to listen to the vocals without any barrier.

For a first trip to the opera this was a pretty good introduction into this oft exclusive, inaccessible, and perhaps even unappealing bubble of theatre.

With their tech working flawlessly (for me anyway) you forget it is even there for the most part and allow yourself to become completely absorbed by the music and drama surrounding you. By tearing away any pretence and presenting the audience with a relevant and true portrayal of human struggle, this somewhat unfashionable medium of performance may just end up becoming the new hot ticket for younger consumers looking for something slightly different from their usual theatre experiences.

SASHA REGAN, owner of the celebrated Union Theatre, is used to big stars and big shows – She took her all-male version of The Pirates of Penzance on tour to Australia, and her all-male Mikado is on a UK tour right now, writes Michael Holland...

But when theatre producer Donald Rice, son of Sir Tim Rice, approached her with his father’s new version of his own musical comedy, Blondel, asking if it could be relaunched at the Union, she hid her excitement and asked to be considered for the director’s job. Team Rice know their stuff and gave it to her.

‘I am absolutely thrilled to bits,’ she told the News. ‘It is such a funny, daft, clever musical to work on.’

A century of heavy lifting

IN ITS eighth collaboration with the Southwark Arts Forum (now Agenci) the latest art exhibition on Tower Bridge is Construction Destruction - Reconstruction, which is the theme the thirteen artists were asked to consider before creating their work for the show, writes Michael Holland...

THE ISLAND, by Athol Fugard, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, is set in Robben Island, the infamous South African prison that held Nelson Mandela for so long, writes Matt Baker...

The play tells the tale of two inmates, John and Winston, who put on a performance of the classical play Antigone, with its stirring critique of following laws blindly if they are unjust.

The tension builds as one inmate is informed that he will be released soon, whilst the other must serve life.

The piece starts with a very physical representation of the cruel and inhuman work that inmates were subjected to, and the actors do an excellent job of portraying the pure force and physicality of those labour camps. It is harrowing to see, and the horror intensifies as we are shown the mindless, ignorant violence of the prison wardens.

WHAT’S ON 25

The Island is a truly moving slice of humanity in the midst of hell when we find the comfort of friendship and humour. The dialogue was superb, ranging from fond mockery to tragedy, but mostly showing how the everyday things are the most important.

And that meant a whole range of styles and interpretations, depending on what the artist felt was meant in the brief, which made for an interesting exhibition full of variety.

Elaine Breinlinger’s Blue Horns was an intriguing sculpture created from abandoned musical instruments which she reshaped ‘to reflect their harmony and rhythm… and to recreate the emotional past of their use’.

In Demolition by Imogen Perkin a landscape of debris and destruction lies waiting to be redeveloped. ‘A metaphor for our own experience,’ she says.

I found the quirkiness and fun in Marta Corada’s Picnic Opposite Tate Modern my favourite. A compilation of images taken around the city were surreally placed to create ‘a new image and narrative’.

There was a rather intriguing piece constructed from discarded household objects and deconstructed

Sir Tim will also be involved in the new staging of the musical he wrote with Stephen Oliver, which Sasha is very pleased about. ‘Tim came to the first read through,’ reveals this respected theatremaker, ‘and we were all very happy with the reaction.’ Adding, ‘We will continue to work with him and his team throughout rehearsals for support, criticism and changes that will inevitably need to be made when working on a new piece.’

I wondered if she had a vision of how it would look. ‘As a rule I don’t watch other stagings before I direct a show as I like to keep my head clear for new ideas,’ she says before telling me that she will once again be working with designer Ryan

Dawson Laight: ‘Ryan knows how I direct and I know how he creates, so there is a trust in each other that we both have the same goal for the show.’

Giving an insight into her thinking for Blondel, Ms Regan discloses that the costumes will be quite serious in style to counter the comedy in the script. ‘We are trying to find the right balance between the drama and humour,’ she explains.

She tells of how the early days are going well, working through ideas with choreographer Chris Whittaker, learning the music and ‘learning how each actor works, what they can bring to the show, gaining their trust and pulling together.’

‘With regards to the direction,’ she begins, predicting my next question, ‘I am

Dulwich slip to seventh after disappointing defeat

DULWICH FAILED to chase down a target of 174 in their Travelbag Surrey Championship Division 2 match against Worcester Park, and had to settle for a losing draw.

Dulwich chose to field on winning the toss, and opened the bowling with Jon Lodwick and Tom Savill, who was having his first bowl of the season.

Lodwick was first to strike in his fourth over with the score on 15, while Savill bowled an accurate spell of nine overs which conceded just 19 runs.

Lodwick gave way to Sam Ellison, who took a wicket in each of his first two overs to reduce Worcester Park to 46-3 in the fifteenth over.

Levi Olver also struck in his second over to take the fourth wicket with the score on 66.

This brought together identical twins Joe and Rob Hill, who added 32 in 9.2 overs for the fifth wicket until Joe was caught behind for 32 off skipper Alex Gledhill.

Skipper Rob was now joined by Waqas Sagar, brother of former Kent and Surrey all-rounder Azhar Mahmood. Sagar dominated a stand of 71 in 14.2 overs for the sixth wicket, scoring 48 off 47 balls before being caught behind off Olver for 169.

Mike Arundell fell in the same manner first ball, giving Olver two wickets in his last permitted over for the second week running.

Gledhill and Richard King then mopped up the tail, with Rob Hill last man out for 37.

Keeper Will Bancroft picked up his

fourth catch, while Olver finished with 3-51 off his 14 overs and Gledhill 3-25 off 7.4.

The last five wickets had fallen for five runs in 4.4 overs as Worcester Park were dismissed for 174 in the 50th over.

Dulwich had 50 overs to get the runs.

This was the first Championship match this season in which Savill and

his regular opening partner Ed Stolle had played together,.

They launched the Dulwich reply in familiar fashion, adding 34 in 7.5 overs before Stolle was caught off Joe Hill for 13.

Kristian Williman went in the next over and King one over later to reduce them to 42-3.

Savill reached his third consecutive fifty but required 74 balls, six more

than he had needed to reach his century in the previous match.

The stand had reached 63 in 24.1 overs when Savill fell for 58 (off 87 balls) with the score on 105.

Skinner went 11 runs later, having grafted resolutely for 30 off 97 balls, and Bancroft followed two runs later to make it 118-6 after 38.3 overs.

Dulwich ended a disappointing match with just five points and slip two places to seventh.

Finishing 19th on 28 points saw them bow out of the SCEFL Premier Division and how have plans in place for next season with their warm-up campaign.

The following weekend sees the oldest football club in London visit St Paul’s as we welcome Ryman South side Cray Wanderers on Saturday 15 July, followed by another home game on Tuesday 18 July as Walton Casuals, also from the Ryman South, heading to Rotherhithe.

Former Bradford man adds ‘real quality’ to Millwall defence EXCLUSIVE

NEIL HARRIS is pleased he was able to move quickly to secure the signing of James Meredith from Bradford City.

The left-back will sign a twoyear-deal when he arrives back from holiday, subject to a medical.

Australian born, the 29-year-old has been one of the most consistent players in League One over the last two seasons, and was named in the League One Team of the Year in 2016-17.

And Harris is pleased with the addition of the defender, and revealed the recruitment department are busy trying to wrap up “three or four” more deals.

“We are a long way down the line with James Meredith,” Harris said.

“Joe Martin has been brilliant for us over the last couple of years but he has moved on to play first team regular football.

“Tony Craig has been absolutely immense but just needs some competition. The competition for places all over the park at the next

Meredith told a Bradford affiliated newspaper that Harris was the reason he snubbed former

boss Phil Parkinson and Bolton for a move to London.

And Kavanagh echoed the defender’s sentiments.

“I think Neil is vital in that,” he said.

“He is the important component in that relationship with the player, it’s highly important to making sure they fit into the team and Neil’s understanding of the team ethos.

“He is a young up and coming manager who has already delivered silverware and success.

“He is someone that players will know what he is about, and will want to play for him.

“If you have a player who wants to play for the manager then that’s most of the hard work done.”

Meanwhile, Harris has admitted he is a fan of inbound striker Tom Elliott from AFC Wimbledon.

The 26-year-old will join to strengthen the Lions’ attacking options ahead of Championship football next season.

Harris admitted: “We are getting closer with Tom Elliott.

“Competition for places is important, we look to have an all round balance of attacking players.

“Steve Morison has been talismanic and instrumental in our success over the last two years, but he can’t continuously be flogged three times a week. Competition for places, again, is key.

“Tom is a player I have admired for a long time, he has had an excellent couple of years at AFC Wimbledon under Neil Ardley these things take time but we are getting closer.”

MILLWALL ARE one of the bookies’ favourites to make an immediate return to League One after promotion to England’s second tier last month.

Bookmakers have Lions as one of favourites for relegation

Neil Harris’ men are in the top four to be relegated next May along with Burton Albion, Barnsley and fellow promoted side Bolton.

And Lions boss Harris feels his side will live up to their underdog tag and attack the Championship.

“Millwall are the underdog, that's when we are at our best,” Harris told the News.

“The aim was always to build a young, hungry Millwall squad that can compete in the Championship without going the other way.

“We can’t spend the amounts that the likes of Derby and Aston Villa can.

“We’ve been compiling a squad

over the last couple of years with quality, young Millwall type players that deserve the opportunity at the next level.

“A team coming up through the play-offs the league below are always going to be written off early doors.

“I look forward to seeing how my young squad, with the experience that we have, cope at Championship level.”

Harris added: “We won’t be fazed by it, we look forward to it. We are going to have a right go in the division. Does it surprise me that we are one of the favourites to go down? No, it doesn’t.

“We can’t compete financially with the clubs coming from the Premier League and clubs that have spent tens of millions over the last few years.

“What we lack in finances we make up for in spirit, determination, desire and team ethic.

“We showed it time and time again last season. We showed it against Watford, Bournemouth, Leicester and teams in League One with big budgets like Bolton and Sheffield United.”

“At every level, I’m sure it has always been like that and I've never noticed it as a player. As a manager, you see it and it goes up a level.

“When you get into the Championship you get offered players that were top of League One but also bottom of the Premier League quality.

“It’s finding the mix and getting the right ones in.”

Lions set to have goal-line tech installed

MILLWALL WILL benefit from goal-line technology now they are back in the Championship.

The Lions earned promotion from League One with a 1-0 win over Bradford at Wembley last month.

And during an EFL summit earlier in the year, a motion was passed to approve the goal decision system in England’s second tier for the 2017-18 campaign.

The system has been in use in the Premier League since the start of the 2013-14 season.

Edin Dzeko was the first to be awarded a goal via the Hawkeye system for Manchester City against Cardiff.

The initial cost is thought to be around £250,000, and Lions chief executive Steve Kavanagh explained its implementation: “The cost is taken through central payments, we pay a share like everyone else - that has been worked out and we have had the guys in and it’s all approved.

“We have had the technician in to implement it so that will be in place for next season.”

“Positive strides” made over new deal for 20-year-old

FRED ONYEDINMA has moved closer to agreeing a new deal with Millwall after winning promotion back to the Championship.

The 20-year-old attacker is out of contract in the summer and has been linked with the likes of West Ham, Bournemouth and QPR in recent weeks.

Onyedinma admitted after Neil Harris’ men’s League One play-off final win last May that he had “made up his mind” on his future.

And it now looks like the academy graduate could end up staying in SE16.

Lions boss Harris told the News: “We’ve made some really positive strides in trying to tie Fred down for the future.

“There has been a lot of interest in the young man with the attributes that he

has. I have always had a really good working relationship with Fred.”

“We want to continue working with him. The last twelve months we have been thinking about his future and seeing what level of football we were playing at. We are getting a lot closer to him staying. It is a lot more positive - he is a brilliant young man, and a really good pro at a young age.

“I want to continue to work with him.

Talks are ongoing at the moment.”

Meanwhile, talks are also ongoing with Jimmy Abdou regarding a new deal.

The 32-year-old is another out of contract this summer.

And Harris said: “Jimmy is out of contract at the moment and he has to think about his options, whether he wants to stay in England or if he wants to move back home.

“Jimmy has a lot to consider but talks are ongoing with him at the moment.”
