The historic pub Thomas A Becket must be saved

T

HOMAS A Becket is one of Southwark’s most notable pubs and for it to be lost would be a travesty for local history.

This is a pub with a history that stretches back to the 14th century. An inn on the site is mentioned in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and the current building has a celebrated boxing past that has put it on the world stage.

Yes, recently, the pub did lose its licence following a “serious assault” but that should not be used as an excuse for developers to move in with the obvious intention of building more luxury apartments.

Thank God for the likes of Jeremy Leach and the Walworth Society who have already done so much to save what little historic buildings we have left from the bulldozers.

Only last week we reported how the Walworth Society stepped in to protect the Elephant & Castle pub from being turned into estate agents. This 1960s boozer does not have the same historical credentials as Thomas A Becket, although there has been a pub on that site since the 1700s. The Society also helped the Manor Place development retain its historic frontage and is in the process of getting the Walworth Road listed as a conservation area.

Its plan to get the Thomas A Becket listed as a community asset is the first step in retaining it for generations to come. This is more than a gesture as it will automatically flag it up as an important community asset, making it harder for any developer to get a change of use and potentially stop it becoming a block of flats. It is important that people start to take part in a pilot scheme currently running between Southwark Council and the News to make planning applications more accessible. By registering an interest in an area post code or street you will be notified when an application on a building like the Thomas A Becket is lodged with the council. You can register at www.southwarkcouncil.co.uk/register This is important to ensure that not only historic buildings are kept but that the character of our high streets and town centres are preserved in the face of extensive development. See our story in this week’s edition on page 23 about a group of residents fighting to protect small businesses in ‘higgledypiggledy’ Peckham as Foxtons prepares to move in.

There is little doubt that local residents value the historic significance of the pub after it was awarded a Blue Plaque by popular vote in 2011 in honour of its connection with Sir Henry Cooper. The British, European and Commonwealth champion trained upstairs for fourteen years from 1956. You’d hope that the hundreds that voted for the plaque will do the same to save the pub.

IT’S THAT time of year when we’re all dreaming of sun, sea and sand – but we had two out of three last week when pop-up ‘beaches’ started appearing in Southwark’s parks.

As temperatures soared, families flocked to the mini seasides-withoutthe-sea in Peckham Rye, Dulwich and Southwark Parks.

There was some confusion as to their purpose, though, as James Dallison

pointed out on Twitter when he posted about the Peckham Rye sand pit saying: “Dogs p*ss all over it in the morning, kids play on it in the afternoon, aaah life's a beach.”

With no signs declaring the point of the sand mounds, the canines and the kids both got in on the action.

While children gave the Rye its first sand volcano it is best not to dwell on the contribution made by Peckham’s pets.

Southwark Council revealed to the News that the sand was delivered to the three parks as part of their sports pitch renovation programme and will be used to help mark out football pitches.

The work was delayed until the beginning of this week so we got to enjoy a little taste of the seaside instead.

Chris Foster’s mum in new police appeal to find suspects

THE POLICE have released a picture of a man they are hunting in connection with the Chris Foster murder.

Aydin Salih fled to Northern Cyprus after a botched revenge attack led to the death of an innocent man in November 2013.

He is one of two outstanding suspects thought to have been there on the night seven hooded men set out to take revenge for a previous knife attack and ended up getting the wrong man.

similar jacket to the intended victim, was stabbed by mistake outside St Christopher’s Inn in Borough High Street and died that night, leaving behind his daughter, Christina, who was just four-years-old at the time.

A behind-the-scenes BBC documentary on the MET Police aired on Monday night, showed the murder investigation from when Detective Chief Inspector John Sandlin arrived at the murder scene to the crushing moment Chris’s daughter Christina watched the scattering of her daddy’s ashes. On the back of the prime-time programme, the police have launched a fresh appeal for information to find the two remaining suspects and Chris’s mum, Jean, has vowed not to rest until the pair have faced a jury.

"Our loss is immense,” said Jean, “but nothing compared to the loss of the only parent Christina knew and whom she loved dearly. She will have to endure a lifetime of upset and anguish at the way her father was taken from her. More than anyone else Christina needs your help in getting

justice for her daddy.”

Speaking to the News Jean said: “The net is closing” on both Salih and the second man known only as ‘suspect four’.

“Number four, come forward and do the right thing,” she urged. “Don’t wait to be traced down like the others. It’s better to do this now than look over your shoulder for the rest of your life because rest assured our family and the police will continue until all of you have been before a jury.”

Salih’s cousin, Aytach Lisani, of Sir Francis Way, Brentwood, was found guilty of murder in December last year and three other men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to cause GBH to their intended target.

Cyclist hospitalised after collision with lorry LONDON BRIDGE: A bicycle was “crushed” by a skip lorry during a horrific rush-hour incident on Wednesday morning which left a female cyclist hospitalised with leg injuries.

The woman, thought to be in her late 20s, collided with the lorry at the junction of Duke Hill Street and London Bridge Walk at around 7.30am.

One Twitter user said: “Sad to see a crushed bike underneath a skip lorry at #londonbridge

shocking to see. Hope the cyclist is ok.”

Another posted: “Just passed a serious accident with a cycle crushed by a lorry at London Bridge. Hopefully the cyclist is ok on his/her way to hospital.”

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “She has been taken to a central London hospital with leg injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.”

The driver of the lorry stopped at the scene and no arrests were made.

A MEMORIAL march will be held this Friday for Tommy Blackmore, the 20year-old man who died following an incident near Tower Bridge last weekend.

Mourners will meet at Docklands Settlement in Rotherhithe at 11pm before walking to Tower Bridge, where they will light memorial candles.

Police were called to Queen Elizabeth Street at 2.35am early on Saturday to reports of a “disturbance”. They found Tommy “critically injured” and rushed him to hospital, where he died around an hour later.

Tributes have been paid to Tommy from all corners of the borough, and hundreds of bouquets of flowers have been left at the site of the incident, along with football shirts, cans of beer, photos, balloons and messages of condolences.

On Saturday, over 150 friends and family members took part in a walk from Tommy’s home in Rotherhithe to Queen Elizabeth Street. Boats passing along the Thames flew there flags at half mast as a sign of respect.

at the memorial, emphasising the strong link between the Rotherhithe resident and the club.

Current and former players posted tributes on social media and the club released an official statement expressing its shock. Tributes were also paid by politicians, members of the public and his former teachers at Redriff School.

Police are urging witnesses to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Reeves, said: “The area around Tooley Street has a popular nightlife and I would ask that anyone who had been to a club in the area and may have witnessed the assault to contact us.

“A number of night buses also use this route and it is possible that someone travelling to work, or heading home, may have seen something that will assist our investigation.”

A BERMONDSEY home that was being used as a cannabis factory earlier this year has been repossessed

by Southwark Council and will be made available to a housing applicant.

Using new legislation, the council were able to immediately take control of the Pope House flat on the Manor Estate after the culprit was sentenced to nine months in prison.

The council applied for a mandatory eviction under the new Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act, which gives councils the power to seek possession of a property where a tenant has committed a serious criminal offence.

This is the first time the new order has been used by Southwark Council.

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark cabinet member for housing, said: “Council properties are a precious resource that should go to those in the most need. We cannot allow for a small minority of irresponsible tenants to bring misery to their local community, and I‘m sure most of our tenants will be really pleased to see us taking action against criminals.”

Councillor Michael Situ, Southwark cabinet member for communities and safety, added: “I hope this case sends out a clear message that we will use all of the

powers available to us to close down properties linked to drug activity and antisocial behaviour, to help keep Southwark a safe place to be.”

Historic boozer where boxer trained goes to auction for £2m

A COMMUNITY group is fighting to protect the historic Thomas A Becket pub, which is set to be sold at auction next Monday with a sobering guide price of £2m.

The storied boozer dates back to 1898 but there has been a pub at the site for centuries, with one referenced in Geoffrey Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales way back in 1392.

In 1888, a suspect in the Jack the Ripper murder case was arrested after leaving a bag in the pub containing knives and ‘curious looking scissors’.

More recently, the pub played host to some of Britain’s biggest sporting and musical names.

Boxing legend Sir Henry Cooper trained upstairs for fourteen years from 1956, while Muhammed Ali and Joe Frazier were among the other stars of the sport to drop by for sparring practice while in the country.

A Southwark Blue Plaque was unveiled on the pub by Sir Henry in 2011, after winning the vote in the scheme run by Southwark News and the council.

David Bowie was also a frequent visitor, using the second floor as a

rehearsal area during the early 1970s, during which time he wrote his iconic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars album.

The pub is up for auction with Savills this Monday, where it is being advertised as “a local landmark” with a guide price of £1,900,000.

However, the Walworth Society is desperate to protect the venue and have submitted an application to Southwark Council to get it listed as an asset of community value. Jeremy Leach said: “It is so much more than a pub. It has an amazing history stretching back hundreds and hundreds of years to Chaucer, and the boxing tradition during the 1960s and 1970s.

“However even more recently it reemerged as a place where people could go for community meetings, for coffee, for jazz nights. It became a recreational area for everybody to use, and we want to protect this.”

As reported by the News in March, the Old Kent Road boozer lost its licence following a “serious assault” in which one punter slashed another in the neck with a broken beer bottle.

Jeremy worried that the potential sale of the pub reflected the negative side to regeneration. He said: “What will the Old Kent Road offer if it just becomes a regenerated area? There will be no pubs between the Lord Nelson and the Blackfriars Arms. You want to create a town centre, but where are the amenities?”

The auction will take place at 9am this Monday at the Millennium Hotel in Grosvenor Square.

QUEEN’S BIRTHDAY HONOURS

THE QUEEN is going to knight a former Southwark MP and honour a pearly king for his charity work to celebrate her birthday this year.

In Her Majesty’s honours list released last week Simon Hughes, former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, said it was a “great surprise” to see his name next to the word “knighthood.”

The Liberal Democrat veteran, who had served his constituency for 32 years when he lost his seat at the election in May, said he was ready for some good news.

“It’s been a rollercoaster year,” said Mr Hughes. “The election defeat and then Charles Kennedy’s death was a

real blow. I was with Barry AlbinDyer in his last few days and that was very hard and then suddenly out of the blue came this good news.”

When he receives the honour at Buckingham Palace, Mr Hughes says it will be an honour for him, his team and everyone who has helped his work in the constituency over the last 30 years.

“This honour is a testament to the hard work of so many different people and belongs as much to them as to me,” he said. “I think it gives recognition to the area as well.”

Although Mr Hughes has met the Queen before, he confessed he would still be quite nervous about being alone with the “most well-known head of state in the world. It doesn’t get much bigger than that,” he said.

up the Rotherhithe based Homes4Heroes charity – housing exservice personnel.

He very nearly knew nothing about it, though, after he threw the letter informing him of the honour in the bin.

“I thought it was a tax demand,” said Jimmy. “It was a brown envelope with her majesty’s service written on it and I thought ‘I don’t fancy that’.” When he retrieved it and finally opened it, he thought someone was playing a joke on him.

“I’m just an ordinary bloke. People like me don’t get awards do we? I was shocked.”

As a staunch royalist, Jimmy is hoping the Queen will be the one to give him his medal. “That would make my lifetime that would,” he said, joking that he had better be on his best behaviour after his sense of

humour once left Princess Anne lost for words. “I told her I wasn’t going to bow to her because she was a Princess and I was a King. Princess Anne wasn’t too happy with that,” he said.

A former Southwark councillor who organised ten years of Christmas parties for thousands of OAPs is also to receive an MBE. Les Alden, 71, has recently retired for the second time to Shoreham by Sea, but spent over 40 years serving the people of Southwark as a civil servant,

councillor and charity leader.

“It’s a great honour but I couldn’t have done it without my wife and all my friends who supported me,” said Les, who was nominated by current Faraday ward councillor, Lorraine Lauder.

Charles Kennedy’s brother-in-law, James Gurling, who lives in Southwark, has been awarded an OBE for political service and Dulwich College’s Chiwetel Ejiofor, has been awarded an OBE for services to drama.

Thousands expected for Mr Bermondsey’s final farewell

THOUSANDS ARE expected to turn out for the funeral of community stalwart, Barry Albin-Dyer on Saturday.

The service at The Most Holy Trinity church, Dockhead, will be ticketed to ensure family and close friends can be seated inside.

For the crowds expected to gather outside, there will be three large screens showing the ceremony

The cortège will leave the Albin’s office in Culling Road at 9.45am and follow a route marking some of the milestones of Barry’s life along the way, due to arrive at the church at

The first stop will be at Barry’s home in Sovereign Crescent, where a flower will be laid on the doorstep.

After going down Jamaica Road the next stop will be in Salter Road at the old home of Fisher FC – which Barry gave a lot of time and money to over the years.

The procession will pause for ten minutes in the Blue market square where doves will be released and an audio recording of Barry reading the poem Bermondsey, my Bermondsey, will be played.

The cortege will also pass by where the original F A Albins was in Snowsfields and the branch which Barry lived above as a young boy in Old Jamaica Road.

Due to the large numbers expected, parking is going to be very limited so where possible, attendees are advised to travel on public transport.

Following the service, Barry will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at the Albin’s memorial garden.

Floral tributes are welcome and should be delivered to Albin’s in Culling Road by 8am on Saturday.

A heartfelt thank you from Barry’s boys SINCE BARRY-Albin-Dyer’s passing on June 6 after a long battle with cancer, his sons, Simon and Jon, have been inundated with messages of love and support. Now they would like to send their own message of thanks for every kind word.

“Throughout dad’s illness over the past two years, there wasn’t a day went past without people approaching us or contacting us to ask how he was and offer their support and prayers, all of which were part of the reason our Dad did as well as he did and managed to carry on as well and as long as he did.

“Never more so than since Dad’s passing has this meant so much to us, our families and all the staff at Albins.

The continued support we have received via calls, cards, e-mails and social media has been a constant comfort to us all and is absolutely overwhelming.

“We have so many people we would like to thank starting with Jackie, who was at Dad’s side throughout his illness with her love, care and support which never wavered right up until he passed away.

“We also want to thank our wives Michelle and Jane for not just supporting us as they always do, but keeping our households strong and showing our dad a daughter’s love.

“We have a very special thank you for our mum, who has always supported us

and has helped to look after our children throughout this time, which has been invaluable to us.”

Simon and Jon also wished to thank the following people: - The staff of Albin’s, who have been wonderful and have stepped up to support us and very importantly, to ensure that the families we serve receive the same care as we always strive to give them, and never before has their love and support been realised. New park proposed for Barry

FISHER FC supporters, local activists and Rotherhithe councillors have backed proposals to name the planned new park at the old Surrey Docks Stadium after the late Barry Albin-Dyer.

Barry, who passed away two weeks ago, was heavily involved with Fisher FC and was a “driving force” in reforming the club after it was wound up five years ago.

He was the club’s president and a regular at matches, once even pulling on the boots himself to score in a charity match.

The old stadium site is set to be developed into a 100-apartment complex called Anchor Point, but a community group managed to secure the preservation of the pitch area itself as a community green space. They hope to develop it into a park and are pushing for it to be named after the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe stalwart.

Fisher FC fans, including the club’s ex-communications director Joe Arif, supported the proposal.

He said: “Barry was the driving force behind forming the new club, it just couldn’t have happened without his generous support. It would be a fantastic tribute to him.

“I do hope that the club itself commemorates him in their own official way, too, perhaps by naming a stand at the new ground after him. It’s the least he deserved and would preserve Barry’s place in the club’s history.”

David Hubber, Lib Dem councillor for Surrey Docks ward, said he “absolutely” backed the “excellent gesture” and would push for it to be chosen when the decision is put up for public selection.

He said: “We talked about it before Barry died and it’s even more appropriate now. Everyone knew him at the club, he interacted with everyone. Naming the park after him would be a great way to reflect his work here.”

The proposal has gained crossparty support from both Surrey Docks’ three Lib Dem councillors as well as their Labour colleagues across the ward boundary in Rotherhithe.

After his death, a statement from Fisher FC described Barry as “instrumental” in the club’s reformation.

It said: “Awfully sad news that Barry Albin-Dyer has passed away after an illness. Our thoughts are with his family.

Barry was Fisher FC club president, and a long-time supporter of the Fish. He was instrumental in our reformation in 2009. RIP.”

Jailed for shouting at bus passengers WALWORTH: A Southwark man has been jailed for eight weeks after shouting at two passengers on a bus.

Ricky Appiah, of Thurlow Street, Walworth, launched an ‘unprovoked’ verbal attack on a couple of bystanders on the 227 to Beckenham on April 18.

A “disturbance” on the route was reported to police, but when they attended the victims did not want to press charges and 27-year-old Appiah had fled the scene.

Following witness statements, Appiah was arrested and pleaded guilty to using threatening words or behaviour likely to cause fear of violence at Bromley Magistrates' Court on June 4.

Inspector Jas Sandhu said: "We are in the business of safeguarding the travelling public and transport staff.

We will use all tools available to us to bring perpetrators of crimes on the transport network to justice and maintain a safe, low crime transport network for our transport community."

Burglar jailed after being outfoxed by TV show’s animal camera

A BURGLAR, who was outfoxed by a hidden TV camera, has been jailed for four and a half years.

Nigel Batton was caught on a Springwatch camera set up to film a fox family after he broke into a neighbouring property in Hollingbourne Road, Herne Hill last year.

The 43-year-old of Marischal Road, Lewisham, can clearly be seen climbing over a garden fence and trying to enter another property on the infrared footage, which streamed live to a wildlife website in the early hours of January 12.

Batton continued to plead not guilty at his trial at Woolwich Crown Court.

But the overwhelming evidence, including a scarf found at the scene with his DNA on it and clothing matching those worn on the footage found at his address, mean this nocturnal forager won’t get out of prison for four and a half years.

Southwark police released the CCTV footage and were inundated with calls identifying Batton as the culprit before he was arrested on January 31.

Detective Constable Marie Hamilton, from Southwark police, said: "The images from the fox family camera were brilliant and together with the forensics we have been able to ensure that Batton has been brought to justice."

Batton was found guilty of one count of burglary and one count of attempted burglary on Monday.

Action! Draper kids make own movies

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: A group of kids have shot to the top of the class after making two short films together.

The nineteen-week Saturday project at Draper House in Elephant and Castle taught eight children how to write and produce their own films.

Led by filmmaker, Andy Lee, the nine to twelve-year-olds decided to make one film about ‘Pancake Magic’ and a documentary entitled ‘Draper Voices’, where the children interviewed residents in their tower block home.

War veteran, John Bishop, makes an appearance as the 96-year-old resident tells the kids about his part in the D-Day landing in Normandy.

The Draper Film Project is now in its second year after it was first established in 2014 by Draper Estate chair (and filmmaker), Luisa Pretaloni, and deputy chair, Julian Adamoli.

Resident resuscitated in street after being pulled from his burning home

FIREFIGHTERS fought desperately to save a Bermondsey man from a flat fire last Saturday, drawing a crowd of worried residents that included his partner.

Wearing special breathing equipment, the fire-fighters rescued the 61-year-old man from his Neckinger Estate flat and brought him outside into the street.

A group of concerned residents gathered to watch the emergency services fight to save the man.

He was rushed to the Royal London Hospital, where he remains in a

critical condition, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation.

Katrina Hogg, chair of the Neckinger Estate TRA, said: “There were loads of people there, including his partner, who just had to stand and watch. The police and the ambulance crew were just great. Everyone was watching them working on him and getting him back with us.

“I’ve been getting updates, and he is still alive and doing okay.”

Councillor Damian O’Brien also indicated in a Twitter post that the fire could have been started by a lit cigarette.

Police and fire officers are investigating the cause of the fire, although at this early stage it is not

Ten fire fighters attended the scene, as did an ambulance crew and a London Air Ambulance, which landed in nearby Bermondsey Spa Gardens.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: “The living room of the first floor flat which was in a four-storey

block, was partly damaged by the blaze.

“Two fire engines and ten firefighters and officers from Dowgate and Old Kent Road fire stations attended the incident.”

Fire fighters were called at 7.21pm and had the fire under control exactly an hour later.

AN ONLINE fundraising page has been set up to help a grieving charity volunteer pay for his partner’s funeral after she mysteriously passed away a fortnight ago.

Friends and neighbours of former Sunday School teacher, Debbie Watts, said it was like a ‘light had gone out in the street’ when the 48year-old suddenly fell unconscious and died at her home in Chandler Way, Peckham on May 29.

Debbie’s partner of eight years, Jamie Bromfield, said he is “lost without her”, especially as he is now faced with the problem shared by many – how to give a loved one the send-off they deserve when there is no money in the coffers.

Garry Waller, a co-worker at the ex-offenders charity User Voice where Jamie volunteers, has set up a fundraising page online to help his friend give Debbie a final farewell he can be proud of.

“Unfortunately, whilst James has worked so hard over the last two years to help people change their lives around for the better, he does not have the financial ability to pay for a funeral,” said Garry.

“This is a plea to raise money to cover funeral costs to provide a fitting funeral for an incredibly deserving woman.”

“It’s been amazing,” he said.

“Debbie always said to me ‘I hope I die before you because otherwise there’ll be no one at my funeral’ -

“She wouldn’t believe all the people who’ve got involved.”

Jamie cannot proceed with the funeral until the coroner has established and recorded the cause of death, which he estimates will still take another two to three weeks.

DULWICH PRIMARY school pupils went wild for conservation earlier this month, holding a themed fundraising day that helped raise nearly £500 for the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Students at Goodrich Primary School dressed up as every animal possible for the special event, with even the teachers joining in on the roar-some fun.

The idea was thought up by eightyear-old Campbell Rogers, who was motivated after reading in his WWF newsletter about the startling rate at which the world’s rainforests are disappearing.

He decided that he and his fellow pint-sized eco-warriors should do something to help protect vulnerable natural habitats. He proposed a special fancy-dress fundraising event, which was quickly embraced by the whole school.

He said: “All the kids could dress up as any creature they wanted and if someone didn't have time, or the older kids didn't want to, they could just put on something green to represent Earth or blue to be the sea.”

TOWER BRIDGE is set to be closed to pedestrian and motor traffic for three months next year.

The closure will take place from October to December 2016, while engineers replace the ‘bascules’ - the part of the bridge which can be lifted to allow large boats to pass through.

The timber decking is due to be replaced as part of the £3.35m project.

“To facilitate the bascule works, a

road closure of three months is estimated as necessary,” said senior engineer Mark Bailey.

“The programmed date for October to December 2016 coincides with those months of the year that the bascules are typically least lifted – hence limiting disruption to both river traffic and the construction works to maintain the bridge.”

The bridge will still be lifted to allow boats to pass through and the Tower Bridge Exhibition will not be closed during the road closure.

A 'TWITTER terrorist' from Southwark, who was considered to have one of the most important online accounts by Al-Qaeda, has been jailed for three and a half years.

Iraqi Alaa Esayed, uploaded 45,600 Tweets in just under a year, encouraging Muslims to take up arms and ‘strike the English’.

The 22-year-old, of Austral Street, Kennington, also posted “gruesome” pictures of soldier's corpses and prisoners being beheaded on her Instagram page.

Her tweets included a poem called 'Mother of the Martyr' which told mothers to build training camps in their back gardens and give young children weapons 'instead of Playstations'.

Another post called on 'Muslims everywhere in the world to strike the English' and kill 'Crusaders and Jews'.

Jailing Esayed at the Old Bailey on Thursday last week, Judge Charles Wide said: 'This material and its dissemination is an important factor in the encouragement of young men and women to travel abroad and engage in acts of terrorism….. It's a matter of great and justified public concern.”

Esayed, who was accompanied to court by her father, used the Twitter account @bentalislam_i to post approximately 58 tweets per day to her 8,534 followers.

The court heard how Esayed became very isolated after coming to the UK in

2008 with her family to join her father, who fought in the Iraqi military and fled to Britain in 1999.

Tanvir Qureshi, defending, told the court that as a child: “All she ever saw was war-torn Iraq, people getting killed and explosions around her which shocked and horrified her… She was socially isolated as a result of the

experiences of her childhood.”

PUPILS AT Michael Faraday School raised nearly £250 by running a “collective marathon” earlier this month in aid of the Nepalese earthquake relief effort.

All 28 kids ran 1.5 kilometres each, completing the full length of a marathon as a team effort. They were sponsored to finish their section in less than ten minutes, motivating the fundraising runners to dig deep in the final straight.

All money raised went towards the relief effort in Nepal following the devastating earthquake there last month.

Entrepeneur to give top tips

SOUTHWARK: A successful entrepreneur will run a “transformational” workshop for the borough’s young people next Wednesday.

Mark Atwood, whose digital skip company TopSkips.com has made £40m, is teaming up with Southwark Council’s SEEDS project, Inspire and The What If Academy for the event.

He said: “I know what it’s like to be surrounded by people telling you can’t do something because you’re not educated, you’re too poor, or because it’s not possible, and I know how to get past that. That’s why I want to pass on my knowledge and experiences to these inspirational young people.”

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Southwark Cabinet Member for Business Employment and Culture, said: “SEEDS is a brilliant project and we want to reach as many young people as we can to help them find jobs in Southwark.

THE LIVESEY Ward Big Lunch was as big as ever this year with around 500 revellers enjoying the party.

The now renowned community event attracts large crowds every year so Nicholas Okwulu, who leads the charity People Empowering People, has now roped in other local organisations to lend a hand.

“The Big Lunch has brought the community together and has now become a look-forward-to event, as it gets bigger we have been to get local organisations such as Lloyds Bank Camberwell who supplied their staff to come and help out,” he said.

“It’s been good at bringing out the diversity of our area in Peckham, creating collaborations, friends and knowing what’s happening in the area. It’s about bringing people together,” added the community champion who has recently been awarded the freedom of Camberwell.

Nicholas also wished to thank Wandle Housing, Hyde Housing, L&Q Housing, Diabetes UK, Mears, Peckham Park Baptist Church, Christ church SureStart and Southwark Council and the Safer Neighbourhood Team together with Community support wardens, Leyton Square Adventure Playground, and JB’s Soulfood for their contribution to the free family festival.

‘High risk’ sex offender on the run… again

POLICE IN Southwark are hunting a ‘high risk sex offender’ who has gone on the run for the second time.

Christopher Trinnaman was released from prison at the end of May after he served four years for grooming schoolgirls on Facebook. He should have registered with the police as a requirement of the Sexual Offences Act but instead he jumped on a train in a possible bid to flee the country.

Police are now hunting the married man from Melford Road in Dulwich for the second time after he first went on the run before his trial began in 2010.

Trinnaman befriended two teenage girls online in 2008. He was 32 but posing as someone their age, before introducing explicit chat, sending them graphic photos of himself and encouraging them to perform for him on a webcam.

In his trial at The Old Bailey, the jury

heard how he had asked the schoolgirls to discuss their sexual experiences with him, before bragging he had sex with “loads of girls their age”, even with eleven-year-olds.

One of the girls, who lived in Hull, said she received over 70 telephone calls from the predator.

Police only became involved after one of the girls’ school friends alerted her mother to what was going on.

As part of the police investigation, 28 indecent images of children were found on his computer, including those depicting “penetrative sexual activity involving a child or children, or both children and adults.”

The internet pervert was found guilty of two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity between February 1 and April 1, 2008, and three counts of possessing indecent images of children.

His sentence was passed in his absence in May 2010, as he remained on the run. Police scoured the country for almost a year before he was finally

found and jailed in 2011.

Trinnaman has been described as a ‘high risk sex offender’ by officers who are now hunting him once again to force him to comply with a Sexual Harm Prevention Order.

Now 37, Trinnaman also has a history of violence. In March 2007, he hit a fifteen-year-old girl in the face after she rejected his advances. He knocked her unconscious with a blow to the cheek after asking if she was single, the court heard at the time.

He is described as 5ft '9ins in height and of medium build with cropped brown hair, although he may be shaven headed now. He usually wears glasses.

‘Keep our Rye Lane ramshackle’ say residents PECKHAM

A GROUP OF residents are fighting to protect small businesses in ‘higgledypiggledy’ Peckham as Foxtons prepare to move in.

Southwark Council has received 35 objections so far to an application to change an independent furniture business on the corner of Rye Lane and Highshore Road into a branch of the large chain of estate agents.

A group of neighbours is now calling for “careful management” of any changes which could affect the personality of Peckham’s most vibrant thoroughfare.

“JSF Furniture isn’t to everyone’s taste,” admits Michelle Male Shaw, who has lived in Highshore Road for eleven years, “but it’s still part of the character of Rye Lane.”

“The special character, which should be protected, is the higgledy-piggledy ramshackle nature of it,” added the architect.

Neighbour, Ruth Kennedy, said she became concerned when she realised five planning applications had gone in for the area of Rye Lane near where she lives in Highshore Road.

“What we want is a thoughtful planning process particularly for this bit of Peckham,”said Ruth, who fears the big chains moving in will push up rents and force the smaller independent traders out.

Southwark Council has not yet made a decision on the change of use application at 38-40 Rye Lane, but a Foxtons spokesperson told the News, the firm is “very excited at the prospect of opening an office in Peckham.”

“Whilst we've been operating in the area for many years from our office in Dulwich, opening an office in the heart of

the town on Rye Lane will allow us to provide exceptional service and local expertise, whilst playing a more active role within the community, in particular with our local school sponsorship programmes,” the spokesperson added.

Linda Drake, local nurse and diabetes lead for NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group said: “If you have any of these symptoms, go and see your GP or practice nurse – especially if you have a history of diabetes in your family.

“They can provide you with the information and support you need to manage your diabetes and to reduce the risk of developing other health problems associated with the condition.”

Earlier this year, Southwark was chosen to be part of a national diabetes prevention programme, which aims to significantly reduce the four million people in the UK expected to have Type 2 diabetes by 2025. Southwark was chosen on the basis of plans to build on the existing ‘Walking Away from Diabetes’ programme - an educational scheme that teaches you how to reduce the risk of diabetes through increasing physical activity and making lifestyle changes.

Anyone diagnosed with diabetes can also join a free education programme that can help you to

become an expert in managing the condition.

Groups meet regularly to discuss healthcare and share ideas on how to make improvements. It is also an opportunity for the practice to give an update on their activity and discuss any plans they have.

He said: “Attending your local PPG is an opportunity to play an active role in developing health services. The groups can help improve communication between the practice and its patients and help patients to take more responsibility for their health. Feedback from our patients is vital for influencing

and shaping our work and making sure local people get the health services they need.

“We know many people who join a group find it extremely rewarding and I’d encourage all Southwark patients to get involved.”

PPG members also play a fundamental role in the CCG’s work to involve patients in decisions about health services across Southwark. PPG members can come to meetings where wider healthcare services are discussed such as communication between hospitals and doctors, improving Southwark GP and pharmacy services, and developing healthcare across south east London.

ITH 12,000 people on Southwark Council's housing waiting list, and house prices sky high, many turn to the private rented sector. But because Southwark is so close to the centre of London the average cost of a privately rented two bed flat is £2,000 a month. Such high rents mean that local people are forced to move away.

Many people in Southwark either own their own home or want to. But with house prices also sky high, many can't afford to. One of the reasons that house prices in central London are so high is that there are not enough homes being built. Under this Government house building fell to its lowest level in 30 years. And ‘Help to Buy’ still doesn’t get people on to the housing ladder because, even if they can afford a mortgage, they can’t get a deposit. That's why we need more shared ownership properties.

It’s so important that Southwark Council is building 11,000 more council homes. Council tenants currently have the right to buy their homes at a discount. But the problem is the Government didn't keep its promise to replace them. Now the Government is planning to give tenants in housing associations, like council tenants, a discount to buy their own homes.

There are currently 16,500 housing association tenancies in Southwark and under the new policy an estimated 8,600 of these homes will be opened up for tenants to buy.

Southwark's housing associations tell me that this is not the right policy for London.

To pay for the housing association discount, under these new proposals, Southwark Council will have to sell off its most expensive properties, when they become empty, including 30% of the homes they’ve just built.

The Government has promised that under this new scheme sold off properties will be replaced on a one-for-one basis. David Cameron promised the same thing for every council home but that did not happen – for every ten homes sold, only one has been built.

The Government should be building more homes for sale, helping people get the deposit they need to get on the housing ladder and helping councils and housing associations build more homes to rent. But instead their only housing policy is to extend Right to Buy to housing association tenants which will mean a very few people will get on the housing ladder while waiting lists for council and housing association homes will only grow.

Since 2011 I have been conducting research in order to gain intelligence and understanding of the illicit trade in cigarettes across the United Kingdom and the experience in Southwark is far from unique.

A KPMG report published two weeks ago shows that the UK has seen nearly a 50% rise in the consumption of counterfeit and contraband cigarettes in 2014, the second highest increase across the whole of the EU. This has been driven by an increase in black market tobacco coming out of Belarus and Pakistan and it is a growing problem, the report warns. One in two illegal cigarettes in the UK now comes from those countries and Poland.

The illegal trade in cigarettes is not a victimless crime. Illicit whites, unregulated cigarettes made predominately for smuggling, are not brought back by visitors abroad but smuggled in by the container load by organised crime and terrorist groups. By purchasing illegal tobacco people are supporting organised crime.

Every cigarette funds the availability of drugs on our streets, gun crime or terrorist attacks, making our communities and our streets less safe.

The widespread availability of illicit tobacco has a devastating impact on our local communities.

It not only undermines legitimate retailers but leads to a knock on effect in local crime generally.

Affording a home is tough for many people in Bermondsey and Old Southwark. At an average of £455,795, house prices are 15 times the average take home pay of people who live in the area. Rents in the private sector are no better – taking up an average of 58% of local people’s pay checks. For many, buying a home of their own is a distant dream.

We have a housing crisis and at its heart is the reality that not nearly enough homes have been built for generations. Housing associations are a key part of the solution to this crisis both across the country and in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

They build 45,000 homes a year – for rent, for sale and shared ownership – but want to do much more. Their vision is to deliver 120,000 of the 245,000 homes this country desperately needs each year by 2033.

The National Housing Federation represents over 1,000 housing associations that provide homes to more than five million people across the country. Our new Government has committed to end the housing crisis within a generation, now it must free up land and provide proper investment. We look forward to

EMPERATURES WERE below the seasonal average during May.

June has brought occasional warm days but generally it has been cool and windy. The sun is now at its strongest as the season moves round and summer officially begins with the Solstice on Sunday 21st June.

Plants to enjoy are annuals such as Calendula (Pot marigold) Cornflower and Nigella; there are biennials and perennials like Foxglove, Iris, Delphiniums (pictured) and Peonies. The star of the flower border for many gardeners are roses.

Roses require constant attention; they are prone to pest and disease attacks, although many modern roses are bred to be resistant to diseases such as rust, which mottles foliage. Classification of roses divides into several types - Hybrid tea, Floribunda, Climbers and Ramblers. The Floribunda has sprays of large soft silky flowers on one stem, the buds do not all open at once, so each flower head lasts many weeks. They come in a stunning array of colours and most have scent. Two unusual Floribunda types are ‘Ebb Tide’ and ‘Friesia’ which have spicy fragrant blooms.

In contrast, the Hybrid tea rose has one flower to a long stem. They are elegant, come in a range of gorgeous colours and are used for cut flowers; one in particular ‘Forget-Me-Not’ has a strong citrus perfume.

Hybrid teas have drawbacks, generally they are fussy and difficult to grow, susceptible to disease and cold temperatures and most varieties do not possess any fragrance.

Rambling roses are vigorous and need lots of space. They quickly grow over buildings or become entwined in trees and hedges. Climbing roses need to be trained around strong supports (pergola or trellis) and require pruning at certain times of the year. Both types do produce flowers with some trace of perfume. Roses don’t usually thrive in containers, but there is a compact variety called ‘Patio Roses’ suitable for pots; they produce lots of flowers on one main stem and come in a range of bright colours. There is still time to organise container grown vegetables and fruits. Try tomatoes in hanging baskets - varieties such as ‘Hundreds and Thousands’ and Firecracker which has little stripy fruits.

Salad leaves and lettuces can easily be grown in window boxes. Courgette ‘Patio Star F1’ is happy in a large pot and will produce little courgettes all summer long.

Strawberries happily grow in hanging baskets or window boxes alongside herbs such as Basil, Mint, Thyme and Parsley. And so even with no garden it’s possible to have some home grown fruit, vegetables and herbs through the summer months.

A production with punch

ONE ARM is a story that can easily be true, a story about an unforeseen turnaround in the destiny of a young man, writes Milena Kanakova...

It is the story of Ollie Olsen, a young boy who becomes a boxing champion in the Navy. Sadly, soon after his big success, he loses his right arm in a car accident and pushed by economical needs turns into a hustler in the New Orleans’ hard and unjust underworld.

One Arm was published in 1948 - the first volume of Tennessee Williams’ short fiction stories. In 1967 Williams adapted One Arm into a screenplay.

Later on Moisés Kaufman reordered Tennessee’s chronological order to the way we see it now in the cosy Tom Varey as Ollie Olsen (left) and Southwark Playhouse theatre.

IN THE fifteenth century, ‘the most beautiful woman in the Island of Britain’ was embroiled in an explosive royal scandal which led to the deaths of thousands of men, before she was banished to Bermondsey, where she later died in relative obscurity, writes Amelia Burr...

Elizabeth Woodville was considered a woman of great beauty in the 1400s, with ‘heavy-lidded eyes like those of a dragon’. But although she was from a genteel family, she was not of noble descent and certainly not a suitable match for the King of England.

Edward IV was clearly not thinking with his head when he snuck off to marry the young widow in secret at her family home in Northamptonshire in 1464, making him only the second King of England ever to marry one of his subjects.

This union turned out to be one of the most dangerous liaisons in our country’s history, reigniting the bitter war of the roses into bloody battle.

The ‘two households, both alike in dignity…’ were that of York and Lancaster. They had been at war for over ten years when Edward IV took the throne in 1461.

He usurped Henry VI when he led a defeat of the Lancastrians at the Battle of Towton ( in which Elizabeth Woodville’s first husband was killed, leaving her widowed with two children).

With Edward at the head of the Yorkists and the Woodville family known Lancastrian supporters, theirs was an ill-advised match just three years in to his reign.

Edward’s power balanced precariously on the support of his cousin, Richard Neville, the Earl of Warwick, who felt at once snubbed and outraged by the clandestine courtship.

The Privy Council – the most senior advisors to the King – were also openly against the marriage, telling Edward with great frankness that Elizabeth was ‘no wife for a prince such as himself.’

As the Woodville family began to climb the ranks in society, posing a threat to the Earl of Warwick, he plotted to take his revenge. He effectively swapped sides, forming an uneasy alliance with the Lancastrian Queen, Margaret of Anjou, to restore Henry VI to the throne in 1470.

Just a year later, there was yet more bloodshed when Edward came out of exile and defeated Warwick at the Battle of Barnet and the Lancastrians at the Battle of

Tewkesbury.

When Edward IV died suddenly from ill health in 1483, he and Elizabeth had had ten children together and spent a total of twenty years on the throne.

But as their son Edward V took the crown, the vultures were already circling. Richard, Duke of Gloucester, Edward’s nephew was to be the young King’s Lord Protector, but instead he conspired to take the seat at the head of the table for himself. In his quest for the crown he moved to have Elizabeth and Edward’s marriage (and therefore their children) declared illegitimate. A Bishop came out of the woodwork to claim he had previously married Edward to Lady Eleanor Butler and the pair had allegedly signed a ‘pre-nup’ making all future marriages null and void.

Elizabeth Woodville was also accused of being a witch – a dangerous charge in those days – and two of her sons, Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, were held captive in the Tower of London.

Richard Duke of Gloucester ultimately took to the throne as Richard III and the two boys were never seen again.

In 1484 when King Richard publicly promised not to harm

Elizabeth or her daughters, they came out of hiding and re-joined the royal court.

The following year, Henry VII invaded and defeated Richard at the Battle of Bosworth, finally bringing a bloody end to the war of the roses.

He restored Elizabeth’s title and honours as a queen dowager (the widow of a King).

Historians disagree as to whether she was then banished to Bermondsey Abbey or whether she chose to retire there to a life of religious servitude.

Either way, she was certainly treated well at the eleventh century Benedictine monastery (located where Bermondsey Square is today) - and continued to receive an ample pension of £400 a year from the King. She died at Bermondsey Abbey on June 8, 1492 in her midfifties.

Before she died she had the satisfaction of knowing that her daughter, known as Elizabeth of York, had married Henry VII. Once a lowly King’s subject, Elizabeth Woodville would become the ancestor of every English monarch since Henry VIII.

Surrey Launch Lyca Mobile Cup

SURREY CCC have launched the Lycamobile Cup – a countywide Kwik Cricket competition that will culminate with twelve teams competing for the trophy at the Kia Oval.

Throughout the summer, over 4,000 children will take part with competitions being run in eighteen different boroughs throughout south London and Surrey.

Competitions take part in all regions of the area covered by the Surrey Cricket Foundation, from the London Borough of Lambeth in the north to Waverley in the south and Tandridge in east Surrey across to Surrey Heath in the west of the county.

Each region will stage a Finals Day of its own – the Lambeth Finals Day were held at the Kennington Park

The winners of each Finals Day progress to a competition held at Epsom College in mid June with the six best boys and girls teams from the day in Epsom qualifying for the big Finals Day at the Kia Oval on Monday June 22nd.

FOOTBALL STARS Demba Ba and Eden Hazard have lent their support to 300 children in Southwark who are raising money to change the lives of street children in Africa.

Peckham and Camberwell junior football club United AllStars will start a fundraising effort on Sunday that will raise funds for their own club and a charity in Senegal that rescues children abandoned on the streets of Dakar.

At a swish hotel in Mayfair, the football stars signed shirts for the club to auction and Senegal striker Ba said: “Help these children raise money for Senegal.”

Through a series of sponsored runs, swims and

cycles the kids at United AllStars are seeking to raise as much money as possible to go to the two charities that do so much to help change children’s lives. Starting as a children's football club on the North Peckham Estate twelve years ago, AllStars are now a registered charity providing open access football coaching to all children in Southwark.

The club also targets children struggling with behaviour at school or at home and also provide the opportunity for children to attend residential trips to the countryside, visits to universities and this year have started work to encourage the children to take an interest in the upkeep of Burgess and Peckham Rye Parks.

AllStars head coach Dominic Welch said: “There are lots of big charities who see Peckham and Camberwell as places they can come to in

order to get some publicity for their work and that helps them raise money to pay their workers’ wages.

“As soon as that money dries up, you don’t see the charity for dust. We are a genuine local charity, we are run by local volunteers.

“The kids know we are here for them. We see the children from our neighbourhood and the challenges many of them face. We have kids who are very confident and eloquent, the high achievers to those who struggle emotionally or with their behaviour.

“There is such a pull towards gangs and negative behaviour. But we won't accept that as the fate for our kids. We fight to show our kids there is another choice.”

But the children at the club did not want to just help themselves and they decided they would

also support the Empire Children’s Centre in Senegal.

Welch added: “Our kids came up with the idea that they should raise money for other children who have even less than themselves.

“The Senegal project seemed a perfect fit, they also work with five to sixteen-year-olds, they also love football and a lot of our own kids have roots in West Africa.

“It’s good our kids can see that whilst their own lives may not be easy, compared to others they have a lot of opportunities. We try to nurture our kids so they can take those opportunities and achieve their potential.”

EX-FISHER boxing club amateur Joe McCorry picked up the first win of his professional career at York Hall on Saturday night.

The light welterweight got off to a flying start in his first bout in the paid ranks when he floored Alec Bazza in the first round of their contest.

But in the end the Southwark man

picked up a points victory over the four contested rounds to secure a win in his maiden outing as a pro.

McCorry was on the ‘Thunder at Night’ bill hosted by Goodwin promotions and will fight out of the iBoxGym in Bromley where he will be a stablemate of Peckham welterweight Johnny Garton.

DULWICH BASED Wanderers FC have been given a £3,000 Football Foundation grant to support its work supporting grassroots football across south London.

“Wanderers would like to express our gratitude to the Football Foundation for sensibly investing their money in a growing club with a track record of success on and off the pitch.”

Formed in 1859 Wanderers FC were founder members of the FA and won the first FA Cup in 1872. A further four FA Cups followed before the club disappeared in 1887 before they reformed in 2009.

The money, payable over the next two years, will be used by the club to recruit and train new coaches and players.

DULWICH HAMLET may have made their most important signing of a busy summer after manager Gavin Rose agreed a two year contract extension this week.

club’s longest-serving manager, Dulwich has enjoyed a period of sustained success, securing the Ryman League South title and the Isthmian Charity Shield in addition to two League Cup final appearances.

“I am really pleased to sign this extension with Dulwich,” said Rose.

“I have a great affinity with the club, the players, the fans, the board and the community in and around Champion Hill.”

Rose has been busy signing players for next season with four new faces, Mitchell Nelson, Jacob Erskine, Danny Waldren and Charlie Penny coming in and the

Dulwich boss told the News this week that one or two others are due to follow imminently.

Three players, Nyren Clunis, Ethan Pinnock and Ashley Carew, have signed one year deals to tie them to Dulwich next season.

The remaining members of last season’s squad who stay at Champion Hill will do so on a noncontract basis.

Speaking about Rose’s commitment to the club Matt Rimmer, Group Head of Communications for club owners Hadley Property Group, said: “We are delighted that Gavin has committed to Dulwich Hamlet FC.

“That is a positive step and matches our own commitment to securing the future of the football club.”

Hamlet Chairman Jack Payne added: “Gavin has been key to the club’s success in recent years so we are really pleased he has signed an extension.

“Gavin’s continued commitment to the club will hopefully be the springboard for future success as we seek promotion next season.”

Dulwich were recognised for their community work at the weekend when the club were given the Barry East Award at the Ryman Football League Banquet.

Burns meanwhile was kept in hospital overnight after receiving stiches to head and facial injuries.

A club spokesman said on Monday: “The latest update from the hospital is that Rory is expected to be discharged this afternoon.

“Moises will be spending another 24 hours in hospital and will require further dental surgery.”

Surrey Director of Cricket Alec Stewart added: “The attention both lads have received from the hospital and the medical teams at both Surrey and Sussex CCC has been top class.

“I would also like to thank all our fans and the wider cricketing family for their thoughts and messages. They are very much appreciated by the lads and everyone at the club.”

of Burns sitting up in his hospital bed smiling with his wounds for all to see.

Renegades snare Cats in season opener Hockey sides book place at Youth Games Cambridgeshire Cats 12 South London Renegades 28

PECKHAM GRIDIRON outfit South London Renegades started their season in style by picking up their first ever win over the Cambridgeshire Cats.

The victory comes on the back of a successful campaign last time out when the Renegades reached the quarter finals of the British American Football

Association Junior championship.

The under nineteen team began the game on Sunday slowly and were soon twelve points down when they gave up two early touchdowns in the first quarter.

On both occasions extra point efforts were blocked by the Renegades giant defensive tackle David Japhet-Mathias.

Having shaken the cobwebs away the Peckham side got into the game when man of the match Stephen Adeoye returned a kick-off the length of the field to score a touchdown for the away team.

In the second quarter the Renegades’ Great Britain star Tigie Sankoh

The South London Renegades picked up a win in the opening encounter of this season

intercepted a Cats pass attempt in his own half and ran it back for a touchdown to level the scores.

After half time the Renegades’ defence went to work shutting down the Cats offense with outside linebacker Sharif Hussein sacking the Cats quarterback three times.

The pressure eventually paid off when the Renegades forced a fumble and took over possession. From then on the Renegades’ offense controlled the game with their powerful running attack and key third down pass conversions from quarterback Conor Lloyd to Sankoh.

At the end of the third quarter a 60 yard run from a reverse play by Adeoye put the Renegades up for the first time.

Towards the end of the game a powerful run from rookie running back Ade Runsewe sealed the win.

The Renegades’ next home game against London Warriors Juniors takes place at Peckham Rye on Sunday June 28 kicking off at noon.

BOTH MALE and female hockey sides will compete at the London Youth Games finals after a successful qualifying campaign in Redbridge at the weekend.

The squads can now look forward to competing at the finals at Crystal Palace next month against the cream of young London sporting The Southwark boy’s hockey squad for the London Youth Games talent.

Hockey team manager Julie Ferrett was saying I’ll retire, but they won’t let me.

“I’d love a medal. The boys deserve it. delighted her teams went through unbeaten on the day. She said: “It makes It’s been a long time since they got a a change. We normally get beaten a bit. medal. Today though it was all about I’m very chuffed. This is my twentieth playing the team game.”

MILLWALL OVER 50s ON TOUR – HASTINGS

THE MILLWALL Over 50s Club meet every Thursday at the Lions Centre next to The Den, home of Millwall FC.

On a couple of occasions each summer they make a day-trip to the seaside and last week’s trip was to sunny Hastings.

Two staff members from Millwall Community Trust borrowed the Minibus from Millwall FC’s Youth Academy and transported the Over 50’s Club down to Hastings.

The weather was probably the best it had been for quite some time and on the journey down everyone was in high spirits and the two Community staff were laughing and joking with the Club members about Hastings’ famous “Winkle” statue.

Most of the Club came together for lunch and a chin-wag at Maggies fish and chip restaurant on the beach.

For the afternoon, we split up into like-minded groups and

enjoyed a walk or a game of “pirate-golf” or an ice-cream and a sit down, Phew!

Those of us who had ordered fish from “Peter the fishmonger”

went and collected our orders (five plaice for a fiver!) and then hopped on the minibus for the journey home.

Centre-back welcomes high-tempo approach EXCLUSIVE

SID NELSON was eight when he signed for Millwall, the same year the Lions reached the FA Cup final where they lost to Manchester United.

He was 10 years old when they were last relegated to League One in 2006, and 14 when they won promotion back to the Championship.

Four years later he was making his first-team debut for the club his family are steeped in and attempting to stop history repeating itself all too quickly.

After growing up travelling down to The Den decked out in blue and watching his favourite team rise and founder, he was suddenly thrust into a relegation battle.

Millwall were just coming off the back of a 6-1 defeat against Norwich City last December that wounded more than the Lions’ pride when Ian Holloway ran his finger down the list of available defenders for a fixture against top-of-the-table, free-scoring Bournemouth and landed on an 18year-old skinny centre-back who’d only turned professional a few months before.

Millwall lost that game 2-0 against Eddie Howe’s side, but Holloway picked Nelson out of the debris of Millwall’s ruinous Christmas run as at least one reason to be positive about a future that looked increasingly like it would continue in the league below.

His then boss named him man of the match and anointed him the future of the club.

If that was daunting to hear just three days before his 19th birthday when most lads his age were planning where to party on New Year’s Eve with their mates, Nelson took the endorsement in his swift stride and prepared for a third round FA Cup fixture against Bradford City.

Holloway didn’t survive long into the new year but Neil Harris saw the same promise in the centre-back and picked him for nine of his 10 games in charge last season when Millwall kept three clean sheets but couldn’t preserve their Championship status.

A new contract offer followed and, though he kept Lions fans waiting a few weeks, there was little question that Nelson would commit his future to the club and he signed a new threeyear deal last month before jetting off to Egypt for a break.

He arrived home last week ready for pre-season with a club with a markedly different emphasis and a stated commitment to building from the bottom up.

“I can’t wait to get back into it,” Nelson says. “This is my boyhood club. Obviously Chopper has shown faith in the young players and that’s great for confidence.”

He didn’t let his fitness slide over a summer in which other prominent young players prolifically documented their over-indulgences on social media. Nelson stuck to the daily off-season fitness programme that was given to each player after the end of last season.

He’d only have to listen to Harris and his boss’ plans for attacking, high-tempo football to realise that was probably the wise option and might make the three-a-day physical sessions in the heat of Portugal in a couple of weeks that bit more bearable.

After that there will be three away friendlies before the first team get the chance to test out the bigger dimensions of The Den pitch which, while resized to give Millwall’s mobile attackers an advantage, also means more space for opposition forwards.

Is Nelson worried about the extra space potentially behind the Lions

defence?

“No,” the 19-year-old says.

“Personally, I like to play a high line. I’m confident in the pace that I have that I can defend the space in behind.

“I grew up watching Millwall and that’s the style of play I got used to seeing from them. It’s exciting that he wants to play that type of football, and it’ll be exciting to be part of it. That’s the way that the fans will expect us to play.”

That style of play will necessitate a high level of fitness. Assistant manager Dave Livermore went to Holland last month to observe the coaches at Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar and noted the exceptional standards clubs set for their coaches and players.

It’s clear from listening to Harris and Livermore that there will be little left to chance in their preparations, and the physical foundations for their favoured style will be laid over the next six weeks.

“Running will be the key,” Lewisham-born Nelson explains.

“We’re obviously going to be fit and hungry so it’ll be of huge benefit to us the six or seven weeks we spend working on fitness.

“I didn’t go to Portugal last year because I was injured, but the lads told me how tough it was. It’ll benefit me to have six or seven weeks to get into shape.”

He also wants to work on an area he feels will be tested more in League One than it was in the Championship as he pursues his personal objectives for the season.

“I want to improve my upper-body strength. We were given off-season programmes to do some work so I’ve been doing that.

“Next season I think there’s going to be a lot more balls played directly up front with the strikers in League One being a bit more rough and ready.”

“I want to play as many games as possible next season and then obviously from a team perspective help the club win promotion back to the Championship.”

And he believes that having only relatively recently finished playing, manager Neil Harris and assistant Dave Livermore will know exactly the level required.

“The manager is on record as saying he wants a very dynamic, fit squad so to achieve that you’ve obviously got to push them hard,” Bacic said. “You could argue then there’s more likely to be injuries happening but if you don’t push them hard and you get no injuries then you also get an unfit squad.

“So it’s kind of a catch-22 situation.

ROMEO CONTINUES WORLD CUP ROMANCE

MAHLON ROMEO’S World Cup qualifying adventure continued in extraordinary fashion last Sunday night.

The Millwall defender played 90 minutes as Antigua & Barbuda recovered from 4-2 down on aggregate with five minutes left of their second round, second leg tie against St Lucia to win 5-4.

The long CONCACAF process to qualify for Russia began last March and Antigua & Barbuda must next negotiate a two-legged third round tie before a potential fourth round comprising a round robin stage.

“For all you speak about technology, the coaches have an eye for it and there’s plenty of experience there.

“They know how long to make a session, when to progress it a little bit as well. We back it up with state-of-the-art equipment.

“The stats from the independent FA audits from last season and the season before show that we had one of the lowest rates of injuries in the Championship. We’re always in the top half if not the top quarter of lowest recorded injuries.”

“And though there is no FA audit of injuries in League One, we will continue to do an audit to compare ourselves to clubs in the Championship.”

BRENTFORD DEFENDER Alfie Mawson will prioritise first-team football in making a decision about his future - putting Millwall in a strong position to win the race to sign the centre-back.

The Lions held discussions with the 21-year-old this week and are confident of landing the player.

Mawson spent last season on loan at Wycombe Wanderers, who are also interested in signing him on a permanent basis, but, having played 45 times in League Two, the News understands that he wants to test himself at a higher level.

There has also been interest from the Championship but any potential move there would come with less of a guarantee of first-team football.

Mawson is keeping his options open, though, and will speak with at least two other clubs this week before possibly making a decision about his future next week.

He was offered a two-year deal by Brentford in April after his positive form for Gareth Ainsworth’s side.

The former Luton Town loanee proved a hugely popular acquisition for Wycombe and carries a serious threat at set-pieces.

He scored seven goals last season, including the winner in the 2-1 defeat of Plymouth Argyle in the League Two play-off semi-final second leg.

Mawson scored in the penalty shootout as Wycombe lost 7-6 to Southend in the final but watching Millwall boss Neil Harris was impressed with what he saw.

The imposing centreback won five awards at the club’s end of season dinner, including the supporters’ and players’ player of the year. He also finished third in League Two’s player of the year race.

Philpot and Williams move to next phase of rehabilitation

MILLWALL STRIKER Jamie Philpot will have the brace removed from his knee next week as he continues his rehabilitation from surgery last month.

The 18-year-old was injured just eight minutes after scoring with his first touch in professional football against Wolves on the last day of the season.

Club physio Bobby Bacic also said the player’s age was a factor in choosing a more difficult surgical procedure.

“He’s a young lad so we’ve been taking things very slowly with him,” Bacic explained.

“It was his first major injury as well and there’s a psychological aspect to it.

He’s going well and working very hard.

“We’ve got a moral obligation to young players and we have to think about career longevity. So we went for a slightly more complicated operation with a longer rehabilitation period where we actually repaired the meniscus rather than trimming it.

“Because of that we had to have a more steady, slow rehab.

“He’s still got another week in his

brace but he’s been working hard in the gym to get out of that brace. He’s on schedule.

“When he loses the protection of that he becomes a little bit more vulnerable, so we have to be careful not to upset the natural healing.

“The easy option would’ve been just to trim it but we went for the more expensive long-term option.

“If he were at the end of his career it might have been a different story but at this stage we felt that was the right thing to do. It meant a longer operation and a longer recovery time because he hopefully has a long future ahead of him.”

Meanwhile, midfielder Shaun Williams is out of his protective boot after the impact fracture he suffered to his foot against Wigan in April.

“He got quite a boring injury in some respects,” Bacic said.

“Because you’ve got to be extremely disciplined with it and protect it in every way.

“He had to show some mental dedication because it’s a quite tedious injury, but he’s progressing well and we’ll see how he is over the next week or so.”
