ONE PESKY pooch is going straight in the doghouse after he managed to turn the oven on while his owners were out, starting a fire which destroyed their kitchen and very nearly burnt their house down.

Leo the Staffordshire-Boxer cross sat looking sheepish as fire investigators pawed through the blackened remains of Allen Mosey’s kitchen in Chandler Way, Peckham after the blaze on March 3.

They concluded the electric hob had been turned on, causing a child’s booster seat resting on the hob to catch fire.

Get rid of bailiffs but for everyone

N

OBODY SHOULD suffer the indignity of having bailiffs invade their home and remove their property - an outdated, unnecessary measure which this paper has argued against for many years.

The Children’s Society has released figures this week, showing that thousands of children in Southwark have witnessed bailiffs removing their parents’ furniture, or acting aggressively on the doorstep, with more than fifteen thousand referrrals to bailiffs made in the borough in just one year.

Southwark Council, in its defence, says the statistics used by the charity are from 2014 data - and that the use of bailiffs has since reduced by 73 per cent. And the local authority should also be applauded for pursuing those who refuse to pay their taxes or rent - as it’s all the other residents of the borough who suffer as a consequence.

Whilst it is undoubtedly traumatic for a child to see a bailiff enter their home, the charity’s call to bar bailiffs from all homes with children isn’t, in our view, a sensible suggestion. You shouldn’t feel that because you have children in your home, you’re exempt from the most serious measures to reclaim taxes - whilst homes without children still suffer from this.

Rather, a blanket approach should be adopted - take the debt in manageable instalments direct at source, either from salary or benefits, and rid us of this throwback to Dickensian times.

On-site inspections no overreaction

HE LEADER of the Council is right when he says that unexploded bombs are a rare occurrence in London - but instigating on-site inspections would hardly be an overreaction.

Peter John responded to calls for a change in the borough’s bomb-detection policy by pointing out that only seven unexploded WW2 bombs had been found across the capital in the past five years.

He defended the council’s response, and sympathised with the disruption suffered by businesses and residents, but essentially, he suggested, it was just ‘one of those things’.

As we said last week, the council did respond well to the emergency, and they should be congratulated for that. But going forward, it’s not unreasonable to look at bringing in on-site inspections, rather than just relying on a ‘detailed desk-based’ approach.

Does the council really think that developers and contractors would be put off building on Southwark’s richly profitable land, just because they were obliged to carry out physical searches for something that could have catastrophic consequences if missed by theoretical analysis? Unlikely.

Allen, 67, said there were some biscuits on the top which the canine culprit was trying to get at when he must have accidentally turned one of the oven top knobs. Thankfully no one was hurt as the flames took hold, leaping across the kitchen and causing the tumble dryer to explode.

Allen and Jean Mosey’s son and their daughter’s boyfriend were upstairs but unaware of the blaze until the smoke started rising.

They raised the alarm and managed

to escape, saving Leo, two turtles, a snake and the hamster - renamed Smokey by the firemen attending from a fiery fate.

The Moseys are now living off sandwiches while they wait for their kitchen to be replaced, but they say they make no bones about it with their beloved pet. “You wouldn’t think butter would melt in his mouth to look at him,” said grandfather of five, Allen.

“He’s the most docile dog you could think of,” he added. “He’s a part of the family, we wouldn’t part with him,” said Allen’s wife, Jean Mosey, 45.

There was a lot of smoke damage to the property and the family “lost

everything” in the kitchen, but their neighbours are now rallying round with donations of white goods and crockery. “It’s all going to take time but we’ll get there,” said Allen.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “We’re naturally extremely pleased that no one was injured in this fire and while unusual, it’s not unheard of for our crews to deal with incidents like this. “It shows just how important it is to keep pets away from naked flames or cooker controls and to make sure kitchen surfaces and cookers are clear of food and other items that can easily catch fire.”

Man hanging over Thames wall caught by lifeboat crew

A LIFEBOAT crew caught a man in mid-air as he fell from a 12 foot high river railing in Rotherhithe last week.

The man found himself on the wrong side of the railing last Thursday evening as he dangled with his legs entangled in chains above the Thames.

Peter O’Sullivan, manager of nearby pub, The Angel, said: “I saw a man in his 50s-60s standing on the other side of the river railing with an empty bottle of sherry in his hand. I asked him twice to come back behind the railing but he refused.”

The 24-hour search and rescue service were called at the request of the London Coastguard and quickly arrived on the scene, spotting the man hanging from the river wall.

Mick Nield, Tower Royal National Lifeboat (RNLI) helmsman, said: “With only a few seconds to act before his arms would have given way under his weight, we rapidly manoeuvred the lifeboat underneath him to avoid

him entering the river.

“One of my crew then quickly untangled the man’s legs from the chains and as he did, literally caught him as he fell before getting him onto

the foredeck of the lifeboat.”

The RNLI lifeboat crew took the man across the river to Wapping Police Pier, where he was handed into the care of police officers.

A MAN was left paralysed on the floor after being tasered by robbers as he sat reading a newspaper in a Bermondsey bookies.

Steve Coughlan, 56, was attacked from behind in Ladbrokes in Southwark Park Road on March 19 by two men, who made off with his bag. Steve was unable to get up and confront his attackers because of the taser shock.

Steve said: “There was absolutely no warning. I was just sitting at the table, reading my paper. Then suddenly there was someone with their arm around my neck and I was being shocked.

“They kept doing it until I fell off the chair onto the floor. They took my bag, with my iPad, credit cards and cash in it.”

Steve thinks that, as a well-known face at the betting shop, he may have been specifically targeted by the two men.

He said: “I’m in the shop all the time,

so maybe they saw that I was doing well.

I’m not going to let them keep me from doing what I enjoy though. They don’t scare me – I was back a few days later.”

Dave McCuster, manager of Ladbrokes, knew that something was wrong as soon as the two men entered the shop.

He said: “One of them was wearing his hood up, which didn’t seem right. I know all my locals and he wasn’t one of them.

He walked past Steve as if he was coming up to the main desk, but then walked back to Steve and attacked him.

“Steve managed to crawl towards the middle of the room but they kept tasering him. The customers were great and were trying to help, but they couldn’t get near the man because he had the taser.”

One of the men was described by witnesses as being at least 6 foot 6 inches high. A police spokesperson said that the alleged attackers were both white males thought to be between the ages of 28 and 33.

Bermondsey gets its own bomb beer!

Bermondsey UXB, which refers to army shorthand for unexploded bomb, was launched by the Southwark Brewing Company last week. The company is located in Druid Street, not far from the discovery site of the 1000lb, WW2 bomb.

Brewer Peter Jackson told the News: “We were in the final stages of fermentation for a new beer when the bomb was discovered. We thought it would be a nice way to make a little link to the situation.

“I still have that vivid image seared in my mind of the brave soldier almost hugging the bomb during the operation. I can’t imagine going through that, especially after seeing the

bomb safely exploded in Kent. That is why we decided to donate 50p from every pint to the Help for Heroes charity.”

The beer is being sold at the Grange pub in Grange Road, which was forced to close for two days while army personnel made the explosive safe.

Landlord Matt Downie said: “It was a bit of a bugger but I’m not the type of person to jump up and down about things. The beer is a bit of a novelty but is going down well with customers, and we’re happy to be involved.”

SOUTHWARK COUNCIL will not push for a change in the borough’s bomb-detection policy following last week’s discovery of an unexploded WW2 device, despite calls for a rethink from Bermondsey business owners affected by the drama that followed.

Developers and contractors are currently responsible for carrying out their own assessments of the sites on which they work, which in the case of the Grange Walk development was a “detailed deskbased” approach as to whether a bomb may have been dropped on the area during WW2.

This tactic only analysed the theoretical probability and consequences of a bomb being found, but the council has ruled out changing the approach to a more detailed, on-site investigation.

Matt Downie, landlord of the Grange pub in Grange Road, was forced to close his business for two days during the operation, a necessity that cost him “thousands of pounds.”

He said: “With the modern technology available like infra-red, any sensible person can see that there has got to be a better way than a desk-based approach.

It’s too risky and chaotic, especially for an area like this that was bombarded with bombs during the war.”

He argued that the “haphazard”

evacuations could have been avoided if the bomb had been detected before it was unearthed, which would have allowed a well-planned evacuation timetable that could have been publicised in advance.

Simon Hughes, Liberal Democrats parliamentary candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, urged the council to “never gamble with the safety of our local communities.”

In a letter written to the council he added: “As you will know, Bermondsey and south London suffered heavy bombing during the air raids of World War Two. I am therefore concerned that more findings like the one of Monday 23rd will be unearthed as London and our community continue to undergo extensive redevelopment. Can you assure me that a suitable risk assessment was carried out on the site where the bomb was found, as part of the Construction Management Plan?”

Council Leader Peter John told the News that the discovery was a “very unusual occurrence” and the criticisms directed at the council were “bizarre.”

He said: “Seven bombs have been found in the whole of London over the last five years, so I don’t think we need to start changing our whole approach to planning because of it. Whether the bomb had been discovered last year or this, it would still have demanded the kind of intricate recovery process that the armed forces carried out so skilfully.

“While I fully understand that some local people were frustrated at finding themselves unable to return to their homes or businesses overnight, I think as a council and as a community we responded very well to the situation at hand and within a difficult timeframe.”

Despite the late notice, the council spent £4,500 on hotel, hostel and B&B rooms to ensure that no residents had to spend the night in an emergency relief centre.

Two appear on GBH charges

TWO MEN will appear in Woolwich Crown Court after pleading not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent in Walworth last September.

Danny and John Pheby, both of Eskdale Road in Bexleyheath, Kent, will appear for trial on April 10.

The pair, aged 33 and 60 respectively, are accused of attacking a man in Liverpool Grove, Walworth, on September 23 last year.

The prosecuting solicitor stated when they appeared in court last Friday that the alleged victim suffered “cuts to the right shoulder and a gash to the head.”

A PECKHAM man has been jailed for fifteen years after millions of pounds worth of cocaine was discovered hidden in a batch of fake bananas.

Daniel Valdes Jaramillo, of Hillbeck Close, was part of a Columbian drugs cartel caught smuggling more than 100 kilos of the class A drug into the country in banana boxes, camouflaged within green plastic containers.

Police arrested three men after the consignment of fruit from Colombia arrived at Dover in July last year, and was taken by lorry to a trading estate in Kent.

While police monitored the warehouse, other officers tailed

bail with the condition that they do not make contact with the alleged victim.

Jaramillo, 24, and two of his accomplices, Leonel HernandezGonzalez, 37, of Hounslow and Oscar Grisales-Cuervo, 45, of Ballard Lane, N3.

All three men were arrested as they left an Internet cafe in Stockwell together on July 10, where they are believed to have received instructions about what to do with the drugs via email.

Police raided the warehouse later that night, finding the cocaine, with a street value of £24million stuffed into plastic banana cases, hidden among the real fruit. Officers also seized £290,000 of cash which was linked to Hernandez-Gonzalez.

Detective Inspector Paul Foreman from the Special Projects Team said: "The arrest and conviction of these individuals serves to show that the

Her defence solicitor said: “She does have various health issues including rheumatoid arthritis. She was only using the cannabis at home for pain relief.”

A SURREY Quays resident has pleaded not guilty to causing criminal damage, assault by beating and harassment without violence.

Andrew Francis, of Helsinki Square, will appear for trial at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on June 16. He was accused of causing £100 of damage when slamming a door into a wall, sending threatening text messages and committing assault on February 15. The 49-year-old has been released on bail with the condition that he does not visit the location or victim of the alleged crime.

Musdassar Ishtiaq, of Cormorant Close in Walthamstow, admitted to ringing the police and claiming his car had been hijacked after he crashed into another car on February 7.

His defence solicitor said: “The other driver was extremely angry and he feared violence from them.

He was really shook up, leading to his leaving the scene because of the violence he feared.”

Court was adjourned until April 17.

The 27-year-old was released on bail.

organisation to represent them. One of the first things the BID board wanted to do was organise the first fully comprehensive survey of the area ever undertaken.

As a business owner, one hears so many comments from passionate people; who really care about the Blue and have their opinions, good or bad on what should or shouldn’t be happening in and around the area. I wanted to capture these “realtime” comments and the appeal of the Commonplace survey is that it is so easy to use and will give users an opportunity to air their views on the spot via their smartphone or tablet.

Nine arrested in Borough High Street brawl

NINE MEN have been arrested following a violent street fight on Sunday morning at Borough High Street.

By Amelia Burr amelia@southwarknews.co.uk AN INVESTIGATION is underway after a supermarket delivery driver was accused of calling a customer a c**t and saying he hoped her family would choke on the food he had just delivered before allegedly assaulting her boyfriend.

Leanne Corby was at home with her partner and their one-year-old baby daughter, Zehra, when her Iceland delivery turned up two hours late.

She was asked to sign to say the delivery was on time and when she said she had already called his employer to say he was late, Leanne says he unleashed a torrent of abuse on her.

Leanne’s boyfriend, Ali Dalgakiranlar, 29, came out just as the driver was getting in to the lift to ask what was

going on. He says the driver then told him to go and f**k his mum and said again he hoped the family choked on the food.

Ali ran downstairs and by the time he got outside, the driver was in his van. Ali knocked on the window and asked him to apologise, to which he claims the driver responded- ‘f-off’ and ‘suck your mum’.

As Ali went to go back into the block of flats in Rowland Way, Walworth, Leanne says she saw the delivery driver attack her boyfriend from behind, leaving him with a broken finger.

“I could see it all from my window,” said Leanne, 24. “He kicked him to the ground.”

“I was shocked. What if I was here by myself with Zehra? It’s not right,” she added.

‘We just want it to be out there so people know what he’s like.”

Ali has been signed off work as he awaits an operation on his finger, which

was fractured in three places, and they have reported the incident to the police.

“I don’t think I can shop there again,” said Leanne, who usually goes to her local Iceland store four times a week.

“They should take some responsibility for having someone like him in the first place.”

A spokesperson for Iceland said they took all complaints “extremely seriously.”

“We would like the chance to investigate this matter further and will contact the customer once a full investigation has been conducted,” they added.

The police confirmed they were called to the incident on March 27 at 6pm.

“Officers attended the scene and found that a man in his twenties had sustained a number of injuries following an altercation with a delivery driver,” said a Met spokesperson.

Officers from Southwark CID are investigating.

Police and London ambulance were called at 03.33 am and arrived to the scene to find a group of men fighting.

The London Ambulance Service treated three men for stab injuries and taken to a major trauma centre as a priority. A fourth patient was taken to hospital with an arm injury.

In total, police have reported that

nine men were taken to various south London hospitals as a result of injuries sustained.

According to police, none of the injuries are understood to be lifethreatening.

A cordon remained in place most of Sunday across Borough High Street between Union Street junction and St George the Martyr church while police continued to investigate the scene.

Enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information regarding the fight is urged to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Appeal over two shooting in leafy Dulwich

POLICE ARE appealing for information after two shootings in West Dulwich in one day.

A 25-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder after an incident in College Road shortly after midnight on Tuesday March 24.

The injured man was taken to a south London hospital for treatment to non life threatening injuries.

The police are still trying to establish the exact location of the shooting and the Trident unit is now investigating.

At 3pm the same day a 17-year-old boy was taken to hospital in a critical condition after he was found with a gunshot wound to his abdomen in

South Croxted Road. He was treated by paramedics in South Croxted Road before being taken to a south London hospital as a priority.

Police say it appears he was shot in the vicinity of Seeley Drive, SE21, before he rode a short distance on his moped.

There had been no arrests at the time the News went to press and a police spokesperson confirmed that “enquiries continue into the circumstances of the incident and any possible motive.”

The police have confirmed they do not believe the two incidents are linked.

Man charged with attempted murder

A TEENAGER has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting in Peckham last week.

A 22-year-old man sustained wounds to the shoulder after shots were fired in Peckham High Street at around 7,30pm on Tuesday March 24.

The victim was taken to a south London hospital in an ambulance but has since been discharged.

Dyrell Stanislas, 18, of Thistle Court, Catford, was arrested and subsequently charged with attempted murder on March 27.

He appeared in custody at Camberwell Magistrates' Court and was further remanded to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on 10 April.

The sculptures by youngest living Royal Academician, British artist Conrad Shawcross were commissioned by the council as a legacy to the Two Forms Divided Circle Barbara Hepworth sculpture, which was stolen in 2011.

Conrad Shawcross said: “Three Perpetual Chords are a counterpoint to a traditional civic sculpture in that the loops invite

approach, play and physical interaction. The sequence of three works has emerged from my ongoing study of light and harmonics, creating a new trail through the park. They deal with the numbers within three musical chords, The Octave, The Fifth and The Fourth. These knot-like forms host a void within them and this is a subtle reference to Hepworth’s work, in which the hole is ubiquitous.”

Shawcross’ sculptures, Three Perpetual Chords, will be officially launched at a public event on Saturday 18 April at Dulwich Park.

Aylesbury’s ‘Alcatraz’ fence cost council £140k to put up Residents behind one of the gates on the Aylesbury

Requiem for Elephant’s subways

ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: A requiem to a roundabout’s subways is set to be performed tomorrow night before the public walkways are closed off for good.

Construction of a segregated cycle superhighway from the notorious junction at Elephant and Castle has already begun, with a year of travel disruption expected, while wider plans to transform the roundabout into a peninsula are expected to be completed by next summer.

Before the seven subterranean footpaths are cordoned off and filled in, ‘Save our Subways’ campaigner, Richard Reynolds, is determined to give them one last swan song.

Requiem for the Subways, composed by Danyal Dhondy, will be played as audience members wander the underground network at sunset.

Work on the roundabout and the subways is expected to begin on April 9 and Transport for London has advised commuters to use alternative routes at peak times. Some bus routes will also be diverted or delayed (see www.southwarknews.co.uk for a full list).

Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, Cllr Mark Williams, has defended the high barbed fences despite the expense revealed by a freedom of information request, saying they are necessary for the safety of the remaining residents.

“With only 18 of 560 properties now being lived in, it is vital that we secure the first development site at the

Aylesbury,” he said. “This is for the safety of both remaining residents and for people who would otherwise walk through this largely empty area.

“Securing this site is the right thing to do, we understand this has caused some problems for the remaining residents and we will review whether any changes to access points is possible.”

Squatters who had been occupying some of the flats in Chiltern block in protest at the proposed demolition of the estate were evicted on Friday.

Campaigners win battle to save park underpass

A GRASS-roots campaign has successfully blocked plans to fill in an historic underpass as part of planned improvements to Burgess Park.

Residents living near the park gathered over a thousand signatures in one weekend, to halt proposals to fill in the tunnel under Wells Way used to link the two sections of the park.

Mother-of-two, Kim Boone, who lives a minute’s walk from the park and takes her dogs there every day, signed the petition to retain the last remnant of the Grand Surrey Canal, which has prompted a rethink from the council.

Shortly after the petition was handed over, Councillor Barrie Hargrove, cabinet member for public health, parks and leisure told the News that plans to fill in the subway had been squashed.

“Closing the underpass was just one option amongst a range of others that the public have been invited to give their views about,” he said. “This option has been ruled out and we are moving on towards bringing more great improvements to this very important green space,” he added.

“The battle now is the cycle spine,” said Kim, 55, referring to proposals to route a new cycle way through the middle of the park. “There are already problems there,” she said, after her friend was knocked over by a cyclist going too fast through the park and broke her wrist.

Cllr Mark Williams, Southark’s cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport, previously told the News: “Any new route through Burgess Park will be designed in a way that encourages responsible cycling, we will talk to local residents and park users about how we can do this in more detail before any works begin."

New barber fears the cut as council presses on with train station plans Adam the barber is worried about his new business

A YOUNG barber who has just opened up a new business in front of Peckham Rye Station could be forced to sell up within months, as the council presses on with plans to open up a new public square.

Adam Mizou, 27, is one of several business owners by the station who have been notified in writing of Southwark Council’s intention to compulsory purchase their leases if they do not come to an arrangement to relocate before the summer.

At that time the council hopes to submit a planning application to redevelop the area around the historic station, which will involve a number of businesses being vacated.

Adam has only just spent £10,000 opening his new enterprise, but says the council has refused to relocate him nearby because his business is not “unique” enough.

“I am the only one in the whole area who does European hair,” said Adam, who thought the plans to redevelop the station were still years in the future when he bought the lease.

“I was shocked. It will be very bad.

In the first six months you don’t make any money anyway, so I’ll lose everything,” he said.

The manager of Jenny’s Cafe, which has been in the arcade for 40 years, says they are determined to

stay put. “We want to be close to the station. We are going to fight to stay in Peckham. It’s not going to be easy for them,” said Seyit Kaya.

The branch manager of TSB bank facing onto Rye Lane said she had not received any written notification from the council of their plans, but Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, Cllr Mark Williams, confirmed negotiations are underway with agents acting on their behalf.

Plans for a £25million revamp of the station, which involved bulldozing businesses and building flats, were halted in the face of huge public opposition early last year. Since then the council has been working with local architects to ask the community what they would like to see outside the area’s architectural showpiece.

Cllr Williams said: “We are working with local businesses to make this project a success, we want as many of them as possible to either re-locate back to the complete development or to be located as close as possible to the station.

“We have not issued formal notices to traders, but we have recently written to them with an update about the project.

“We will continue to discuss with them how the process will work, how they will be affected, how they can plan ahead, as well as relocation options and compensation. We will continue to offer as much support and guidance as possible.”

Dad of three gets eighteen years for slashing ex’s neck

CAMBERWELL

By Amelia Burr amelia@southwarknews.co.uk A FATHER of three, who slashed his ex-girlfriend's neck with a kitchen knife while saying he loved her, has been jailed for eighteen years.

John Webster, 44 was seen having a disagreement with his former partner in a Camberwell pub, the day after she had travelled to London so he could see his children in March last year.

In the early hours of the next day, March 30, Webster left his home in Elmington Road, Camberwell, and was spotted just before 9am pacing up and down outside an address in SE18, where the 32-year-old victim was staying with a friend.

The victim left the property to speak to Webster who, after talking for fifteen minutes, launched a frenzied attack. He slashed his ex-partner's neck with a kitchen knife and kicked her in the head and face, whilst telling the victim that he loved her.

The victim was helped back into her friend's address but Webster kicked the front door's glass panel in, crawled through and attacked her again with the shards of glass. In what police described as a "vicious attack", the victim was left with multiple stab and slash wounds to her neck and body, a fractured eye

socket and a broken nose.

Webster left the address but was traced to his mother's address six hours later, where he was still wearing the same blood-soaked clothes. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Webster admitted causing the injuries to his ex-partner, but pleaded not guilty to a the charge of attempted murder. A jury found him guilty in December and on March 25 he was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court to eighteen years in prison, subject to a Section 45a hospital order. A Section 45a hospital order deems that the convicted person will be treated in hospital as long as two doctors are satisfied that he is suffering from a mental disorder, which makes it appropriate for him to be detained in a hospital for medical treatment. When treatment is no longer necessary, the patient will be taken to prison to serve out the remainder of their sentence.

Investigating officer DC Anna Brown, from Greenwich Police's CID, said: "Webster launched a vicious attack against his victim, leaving the mother of his children for dead. I would like to praise the victim for her courage and strength and for assisting us with our investigation. I hope that Webster will take the time behind bars to think about his actions and how they impacted on his family."

A YOUNG funeral director has raised more than £800 for mums with cancer from pub-goers with deep pockets at the weekend.

Gary Valentine Fuller was set to do a skydive on Saturday for the charity he set up after his nan died from cancer.

But due to high winds the jump, in aid of The MumMum Foundation was

cancelled. Not to be deterred, Gary went ahead with a fundraiser at the Nag’s Head in Camberwell, where he raised £820 from a raffle and donations.

POLICE RELEASE CCTV AFTER TEEN ATTACKED WITH BRICK

POLICE HAVE released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to after a teenager was attacked with a brick on a train to Dulwich.

On Wednesday, February 25, a seventeen-year-old boy got on a train at Crystal Palace and started listening to music on his headphones.

A man approached him and demanded he hand over his mobile phone. When the boy refused, the suspect took a brick out of his bag and hit the boy around the

head with it. The victim sustained severe bruising but no life-threatening injuries and was able to call for help, at which point the suspect departed the train at East Dulwich at 11.10pm.

A man is also wanted in connection with a theft which occurred half an hour later at West Norwood station. A 42year-old man was using his Oyster card when a man approached him from behind, snatched his wallet and ran out of the station. Officers from the British Transport Police have isolated two CCTV images of a man they wish to speak to in connection with both offences and are calling on members of

the public to help name him.

Detective Sergeant Peter Thrush explained: “Both of these victims were very intimidated by what happened and BTP is committed to identifying the person responsible.

PECKHAM:MP Simon Hughes met staff at a health centre in Peckham to hear how new funding has improved their opening hours.

Mr Hughes met with NHS health commissioners and staff at Lister Primary Care centre in Peckham Road, which acts as a hub for GP surgeries in the south of Southwark.

Southwark was awarded nearly £1m last year in the first wave of funding from the Prime Minister’s Challenge Fund, which seeks to improve patient access to local GP services.

As part of the scheme, the Peckham health centre has made sure a GP or practice nurse is available from 8am8pm, seven days a week.

During the visit, Dr Sian Howell told Mr Hughes that there were now many more appointments available in Southwark for people who needed to see a GP urgently, including in the

A 20-year-old woman has been arrested after a hit and run in East Dulwich left a moped rider seriously injured.

A 22-year-old man has died after a collision with a car and then a bus outside East Dulwich Station on Sunday night.

Off duty nurses and paramedics fought to save the young man after eye witnesses said he dashed out into the road by the bridge in Grove Vale at around 8.20pm, but he was pronounced dead at the scene just before 9pm.

Rebecca McDonald, a PhD student living in Peckham, was travelling on the bus directly behind the one involved in the incident. All the passengers were asked to get off the bus and Rebecca had to walk past the tragic scene.

“I felt a bit sick when I saw it,” she said.

“Maybe it was the shock of it but I don’t recall hearing anyone talk.

They were just standing on the sidewalk trying to figure out what to do,” she added.

The drivers of the car and the 176 bus involved both remained at the scene and neither were arrested.

Bus operator, Arriva, confirmed they are assisting the police with their enquiries.

A spokesperson said in a statement: “Our deepest thoughts and sympathies are with the pedestrian’s family and friends.

“This is a very difficult time for the staff involved; we are currently supporting the driver. Early investigations would suggest the pedestrian was involved in a collision with a car and was subsequently knocked into the path of the bus.”

A DULWICH driver escaped injury when strong gusts of wind blew a tree onto her car on Tuesday afternoon.

Luckily the vehicle had slowed down to turn around in the road when the tree collapsed, lessening the collision impact and causing no

injuries, according to witnesses.

One passer-by said on Twitter: “Occupants are ok. Lady was turning around when tree came down. Police and local people helping to move the tree.”

The Met Office announced a yellow warning for strong winds across much of the country on Tuesday, with powerful gusts causing problems across Southwark.

The police are appealing for witnesses of the incident, in East Dulwich Road, near the junction with Worlingham Road just after 6.30am on Sunday morning, to come forward.

A 41-year-old moped-rider was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to hospital with leg injuries. He is described as being in a serious but stable condition.

The driver of the car involved, a black Renault Clio, did not stop at the scene and the vehicle was later found abandoned in Lapse Wood Walk, SE23 with significant front end damage. The South East Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) is carrying out enquiries into the circumstances of the incident.

Detective Sergeant Matt Austin, from the SCIU, said:"Anyone with any information that could assist us are asked to call our witness line on 020 8285 1574."

A 20-year-old woman was arrested at an address in Sydenham on suspicion of dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. She has since been bailed pending further enquiries to return in late June.

7,000 children witnessed visits, says charity

THOUSANDS OF children in Southwark have been scared by the bailiffs coming round to collect council tax debt, according to new figures released this week.

More than fifteen thousand referrals were made to bailiffs in Southwark in one year, of which The Children’s Society estimates 4,000 had children living at home.

With an average of 2.4 children in each family, the charity believes more than 7,000 children in the borough have witnessed things like their furniture being removed or threatening behaviour on their own doorstep.

Figures for Lambeth were even worse, with 19,611 households

referred to bailiffs in the same year.

The Children’s Society is now calling for local authorities to put a stop to bailiff visits to households with children, after their research revealed that councils across England sent out debt collectors on 1.3m occasions between 2013-14.

Sherry Peck, London Area Director for The Children’s Society, said: “Bailiffs should simply not be sent round to families with children.

Instead, councils should give struggling residents a chance to negotiate affordable repayments, and make sure every family in trouble is offered independent debt advice. Every child and teenager deserves to feel safe in their own home without being scared of the next knock at the door.”

Southwark’s cabinet member for finance, Cllr Fiona Colley, said since

the Children’s Society received figures from the council under a Freedom of Information request in 2014, it had already reduced the use of bailiffs by 73 per cent.

“We share the Children's Society's concerns about the impact of debt on families and children,” said Cllr Colley. “We work closely with families in arrears, and proactively contact them to try to resolve any issues and agree affordable repayment plans. We also provide financial assistance and support for residents through the Welfare Hardship Fund and the Southwark Emergency Support Scheme, and our Rightfully Yours team has helped residents gain £5.9m extra income by ensuring they’re claiming everything they’re entitled to,” she said.

Ninety plants found in raid on cannabis factory

POLICE RAIDING a cannabis factory in Bermondsey seized 90 plants and found evidence of tampering with the electricity meter, last Friday.

When they arrived at the Alscot Way property, officers from the Grange Safer Neighbourhood team noticed “a

strong smell of cannabis” and found the plants, which were brought to a local police station and are due to be destroyed.

There was nobody in the building at the time of the raid and no arrests have been made. Enquiries are ongoing. Anyone with information should call Sergeant Chris Iliffe on 0208 721 2439 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

HARRIET HARMAN has demanded to see a police file kept on her after it was revealed she was under surveillance while serving as an MP for Peckham and possibly even when serving as a Cabinet Minister.

The Labour party deputy leader said the security services had ‘overstepped the mark’ when they monitored her movements in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, while she says she was simply campaigning for the rights of women and workers.

She told the News: “The thing about my situation is I was never involved in anything illegal at any stage. It shows how far from the mark the security services can be. If I’m supposed to be a threat, how wrong can they be getting it? It’s a complete waste of time and money of the security services,” she added.

A former undercover officer revealed last week that he read ten secret police files on MPs, including Ms Harman, while he worked for the Met’s Special Branch, but she says she has been asking to see her file since the 1980s when she was first made aware of it.

She has always been refused, but hopes that this latest revelation and a public enquiry into undercover police operations will be a “break through.”

“The thing about it is who knew about it?” she asked. “Were they [the security services] out of control or was there political complicity?”

Last year the Metropolitan police said it did not know how many elected politicians it was currently monitoring, after it was revealed that it had monitored Camberwell’s own Green party peer, Jenny Jones.

Speaking to the News, Jenny Jones said she was “shocked” but “not surprised” to hear that Harriet Harman was also kept under surveillance. “I bet there’s quite a few more as well,” she said.

Jenny Jones was logged on the police’s ‘domestic extremist’ database after she took on a role scrutinising the force.

“I think they like to watch the people who cause them trouble,” she said.

“It’s nothing to do with protecting the public, it’s about protecting the police.

“It’s just about being careful that they don’t get challenged at all, which I think is utterly inappropriate. They are funded by tax payers so they have to be held accountable,” added the London Assembly Member.

A spokesperson for the Met said they would be contacting Ms Harman in writing, to offer an opportunity to discuss the “issues raised” by Special Branch officer, Peter Francis.

Home Secretary, Theresa May, has been called upon to ensure an existing judge-led public inquiry into undercover policing examines the extent of the surveillance of members of parliament.

ED MILIBAND was confronted by protesters last week as he left a feisty Q&A session with the borough’s residents in Rotherhithe, two years after being pelted with eggs in Walworth.

Some of the protesters, who cornered Miliband as he left Silverlock Tenants’ Hall via the back door, were decked out in Alex Salmond masks and banners mocking the Labour leader.

Others were disgruntled members of the New Fathers 4 Justice campaign group, which aims to highlight “the injustice that fathers face in the family court system.”

Despite some jostling and pushing, a Labour spokesperson played down claims that Miliband was punched as he left the venue.

He said: “People were reporting that he was punched but that’s not true. It wasn’t a punch, it was just a bit of over exuberance. It was election rough and tumble, really.”

Miliband faced strong questioning from audience members during the event and was heckled by two residents upset with Southwark Council’s treatment of Aylesbury Estate residents.

The Labour spokesperson said:

“The Q&A went very well. It was quite lively with some very strong questions asked. Ed likes that, he likes people asking difficult questions and he enjoyed it.”

Miliband started the event by saying that Cllr Neil Coyle was running a “brilliant campaign” for the Bermondsey and Old Southwark parliamentary seat, and then answered questions on housing, charity, sexual exploitation and a variety of other issues.

Council leader pledges to give locals the final say on development by tube

A WOMAN was injured on Tuesday morning when a window fell from the London Bridge outpatients hospital in Tooley Street.

THE PLANNED redevelopment for Southwark tube station and the adjacent Styles House will depend entirely on the support of nearby residents, Southwark Council confirmed last week.

High winds are believed to have caused the window to fall from the fifth-storey of the Emblem House building to the pavement below.

A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service said: “We responded at 9.24am with a motorcycle responder and ambulance crew to calls that a woman in her 20s had suffered a head injury.”

She was taken to Royal London Hospital on priority. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said that her injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.

Earlier this month, Transport for London and Development Securities announced plans to build more than 300 homes at the one-acre, Blackfriars Road station.

The council quickly denied that they had agreed to sell council-owned land for the development, with Council Leader Peter John emphasising this point at Council Assembly on March 25.

When asked by Cllr David Noakes whether he could give assurance that residents would have the final say over a potential development involving their homes, Cllr John replied: “Yes, I'm happy to give that.”

In a written response he added: “The council has not indicated in any way that it would include council-owned land, either at Styles House or elsewhere in the joint venture which Development Securities have secured with Transport for London (TfL) to

redevelop the Southwark tube site.”

Cllr Noakes was pleased with this statement and is urging the council to keep their word.

He said: “When I raised the issue at Council Assembly I was slightly surprised at the Council Leader’s response, given the fact that they have had meetings with developers. We must make sure he keeps his word.

“Green space is really valuable in the north of the borough and the gardens around Styles House are truly beautiful.

If we are going to sacrifice these it absolutely must be with residents’ approval and consent.”

Cllr Noakes also highlighted a previous instance of “miscommunication” towards Styles House residents, in which the council released plans in 2013 to sell properties at the site without consulting residents.

A spokesperson for Development Securities said: “TfL and Development Securities have signed a joint venture agreement to redevelop a one-acre site above and around Southwark underground station. The proposed regeneration is in early stages of development and the JV partners will undertake a full public consultation with the council and local community in the coming months.”

Royal Mail starts post delivery again - nine months on

THOUSANDS OF Southwark residents have made their support for the Bakerloo line extension known in a recent consultation.

Out of 15,000 respondents to Transport for London’s online survey more than 2,500 were from Southwark, with 99 per cent saying they supported proposals to extend the tube line through either Camberwell and Peckham or down the Old Kent Road.

When asked which route they would support, 64 per cent said Camberwell and Peckham, and 49 per cent said the Old Kent Road.

Half of those supporting the Camberwell route said it was because roads and public transport in the area are already congested, with almost half of those supporting the Old Kent Road route saying it was needed to support d e v e l o p m e n t opportunities in the future.

Although Southwark Council has previously pushed for a forked extension going down both routes, this option did not appear in the consultation.

Some respondents did propose a two-route option, which Richard de Cani, TfL’s Managing Director for Planning, said would be considered “as well a number of other alternative routes.”

Southwark’s cabinet member for regeneration, planning and transport, Mark

Williams, said “We will continue to push for both, as they are both needed for our current and future residents. For too long our part of London has been poorly served by the tube and we have an historic opportunity to put this right," he said.

Liberal Democrat candidate for Bermondsey and Old Southwark, Simon Hughes invited Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary of the Treasury, to the Elephant and Castle last week to “explain how important an extension to the Bakerloo line is to our part of London.”

“I will now be writing again to Danny to make crystal clear how important it is that there is a twobranch extension, serving both Camberwell and the Old Kent Road,” he said.

Construction of the £3billion extension is due to start by 2025 and be completed during the early 2030s.

AFTER NINE months of refusing to deliver post unless chaperoned by a 69-year-old councillor, the Royal Mail has finally resumed normal service at Rowland Hill House.

The postal service withdrew its service after a postie was allegedly attacked by a tenant of the Nelson Square block in Borough last year.

No charges were made due to a lack of evidence.

Royal Mail only resumed a limited service when Cathedrals ward councillor Maria Linforth-Hall (pictured) offered to step-in as a bodyguard.

She accompanied delivery staff for three deliveries a week, while two other elderly tenants remained at the delivery van as added protection.

The News first revealed the situation in January, and the story then came to the attention of the national press.

The situation finally ended this week when the Royal Mail began sixday-per-week services without protection.

She said: “I am delighted and relieved that the Royal Mail has finally brought an end to this ridiculous situation where pensioners had to escort the postman.

“It was totally unfair that all the residents in Rowland Hill House were being punished because the Labour council and Royal Mail were just blaming each other. It is unbelievable that it took nine months and national press coverage to get this sorted. There should have been stronger action from the council to get the post delivered every day again.

The council should be sticking up for and protecting its residents, not letting a couple of pensioners do their job for them.”

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail can confirm it is resuming its regular six day a week service to residents at Rowland Hill House, SE1 from Monday 23 March.

“We apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused as a result of our reduced service in recent months, however the safety of our people whilst out on delivery is paramount.

We will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

Residents woken with a bang as van explodes in Rotherhithe

ROTHERHITHE: Residents woke with a jump on Friday when a van burst into flames, causing a “massive explosion” at around 5.30am in Swan Road.

A video of the incident was posted online by a Rotherhithe tour guide, who said: “Massive explosion in Rotherhithe just now. Doors shook. Van engulfed in flames on Swan Road. Loud bang.

Sounded like a door being kicked in.”

No one was hurt in the blast or the ensuing fire, and the blaze was put out by around 5.40am after the arrival of a Dockhead fire crew. It is not known how the fire began.

New fire station opens its doors

BERMONDSEY: Old Kent Road’s new fire station opened last week as rebuild work began at Dockhead fire station.

The brand new fire station opened on Tuesday, March 24, on the same day as the 86-year-old Dockhead Fire Station closed its doors for the last time before it is rebuilt as part of a government initiative.

Building work on the Old Kent Road site began in October 2013, furnishing it with new facilities which include a four storey training tower, drill yard and solar panels.

Southwark Borough Commander Simon Tuhill said: "The previous Old Kent Road station no longer met the demands of a modern fire and rescue service.

"The new station will provide us with facilities fit for the 21st century and reinforces our commitment to providing the best possible service to Londoners."

Firefighters at Dockhead fire station have temporarily relocated to Deptford fire station, which is hosting them while upgrade work takes place at their station. The building, which served as the filming location for the fictional Blackwall Station in the long-running ITV show London’s Burning, was built in 1929 and will be completely demolished. The crew are expected to move back to their new station in early 2016.

The construction is part of a £51.5m donation from the Department of Communities and Local Government to rebuild nine new stations.

Mayor’s instruction on fire school

BOROUGH: London mayor Boris Johnson has instructed the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority (LFEPA) to accept a bid from developer Hadston to transform Southwark Fire Station into a secondary school and new housing.

The mayor also agreed to provide extra funding to LFEPA in case the sale is subject to legal challenge from other bidders.

Hadston will transform the fire station into a 1,100 secondary school, a number of homes and have also proposed to retain a museum on the site. Leader of Southwark Council Peter John said: “It is important that this site is brought forward for community use and a new school on the site will help meet growing demand for secondary school places in the north of the borough.” There will be consulted about an appropriate provider for the new school.

After the disappointment of Bruno the donkey’s no-show last year, Patrick Blunt, chair of the Walworth Town Team and Father Andrew MoughtinMumby, Rector of St Peter’s Church in Liverpool Grove, were delighted that Aubrey was the “star of the show” this year.

“He was so charming and well behaved,” said Patrick, who felt Aubrey also got a good deal on the day.

PUPILS FROM St John’s Catholic School in Rotherhithe got in the Easter spirit last week with a special ‘bonnet parade’.

The event saw Year 6 children wear colourful Easter hats on Friday, March 27, a tradition that has been taking place at the school for over 20 years.

This year the theme was ‘One World, One Climate’, which saw kids make and wear hats relating to climate change and “the beauty of the world around us.”

Deputy Head Vera Jajechnyk said: “The quality of the hats was incredible and children and families worked hard to make the parade a success.”

Tesco judged the parade and provided chocolate eggs for the children.

IT’S ALL a bit fishy, this councillor resignation business (Mysterious resignation of Labour councillor, News, March 26)

Usually, a councillor resigning, especially after less than a year in the job, is a sign of wavering commitment and a failure by their party to put forward people with a real sense of duty to the community.

In the case of Cllr Claire Maugham, however, who has just resigned from her seat in Chaucer ward only ten months in, I am reluctant to condemn.

There are many legitimate reasons why someone would have to resign from public office - personal and family reasons for one.

Of course, details of private circumstances are just that, private, and the public does not need to know the ins and outs.

However, there has been no clear indication that Cllr Maugham’s decision is motivated by private matters, and the report in this paper last week suggests a more sinister set of circumstances leading to her resignation.

The suspicion that a highly educated and independent-minded councillor was muscled out by Labour’s bully boys because of a letter her husband wrote is unfortunately all too plausible.

The subsequent chicanery of the Labour group’s announcements and refusal to explain what happened only adds to that suspicion. Like I said, it’s all a bit fishy.

It is totally unacceptable that people are treated like this, especially the elderly. You can go and buy radiators of the shelf at most DIY stores so there is no excuse. After a year of suffering it’s about time Southwark Council and their contractors got their act together.

COUNCIL ESTATES being classified as brownfield sites by Lord Adonis (Labour) in his blueprint for social cleansing which is mistitled "City Villages More Homes,Better Communities” - means every council tenant and leaseholder is now at war with Labour.

Notting Hill Housing Trust is already charging double council rent on the Aylesbury Estate and this is before a single penthouse suite has been built or sold to money laundering Russian or Chinese speculators which will ramp up markets and so-called social rents beyond imagination. New flats on the Old Kent Road are being offered now for AT LEAST four times council rents.

We repeat our invitation to Ed Miliband to visit us on the Aylesbury Estate so he can himself see through the lies he has been told and the abject suffering being imposed on ordinary people in his name.

The jackals of privatisation and speculation have been unleashed by Labour. The people will never surrender and are now fighting back and will continue to fight with no holds-barred until victory.

Bowel cancer - don’t suffer in silence

E

VERY 13 minutes someone in the UK is diagnosed with bowel cancer. It’s an alarming statistic.

The problem is that far too few people with bowel cancer are diagnosed in the early stages. We know some people feel uncomfortable talking to their GP about the symptoms or simply don’t know what they are. April is bowel cancer awareness month and a great opportunity to get talking about our bowels!

As a GP, I speak to patients about lots of health problems. There really is no reason to feel embarrassed talking to your doctor about anything. Telling us about changes in your bowels could help us detect cancers at an early stage.

Taking part in the bowel cancer screening programme is the best way to detect bowel cancer early. The earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chance it can be cured completely. Despite this, only half the people who receive the screening test actually return it. At the moment, if you’re between the ages of 60 and 69 and are registered with a GP you will be offered a bowel cancer screening every two years.

People in this age group will automatically be sent an invitation in the post, then their screening kit. The screening doesn’t take long and can be done in the privacy of your own home. Just make sure your GP has your correct name and address for you to receive this.

If you’re not sure about the symptoms of bowel cancer, here’s what to look out for. If you notice bleeding from your bottom and/or blood in your poo, a change in bowel habit lasting three weeks or more, unexplained weight loss, extreme tiredness for no obvious reason, or a pain or lump in your tummy – book an appointment with your GP. You may experience one some or none of these but if things don’t feel right go and see your doctor.

A few small changes to your diet and lifestyle will help reduce your risk of developing bowel cancer – as well as keeping you healthy in general.

Try to keep active – around 30 minutes of moderate physical activity, 5 times a week is a good target to aim for. Your diet is important. Make processed meats such as ham, bacon, burgers, salami and sausages an occasional treat rather than every day.

Also try to incorporate more fibre into your diet by eating wholegrains like brown rice and granary bread. Limiting the amount of red meat you eat to no more than 500g a week, having at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, and drinking and smoking less can also help reduce the risk.

BEFORE THE Lottery the only get rich quick schemes were thieving (with the consequences…), or a choice between the unfeasible Spot The Ball competition and the just as impossible football pools, where families the length and breadth of the nation dreamt of getting eight score draws, writes Michael Holland..

Steve Brown and Justin Greene have written a musical based on Pools winner Viv Nicholson’s colourful life – Spend, Spend, Spend – that tells the tale of what happened when she got eight score draws.

The first act is full of foot-stamping songs loaded with Yorkshire humour as we see how Viv escaped from a dysfunctional home into the arms of the first man who got her pregnant, and then on to the handsome neighbour, Keith, who became the love of her life.

Sexual Happening is a brilliant number where Viv gets to show her enjoyment at this ‘awakening’ and how sassy she is. When Keith wins the equivalent of £5m they go on a spending spree that was one long party.

desire to ‘spend, spend, spend’ was a dream of everyone’s. After living in near poverty they joyfully sing about buying two of everything: two loos – one for No. 1s and one for No. 2s!

Act Two is a more sombre affair.

When Keith dies in a car accident after four years of the high-life Viv quickly spirals into bankruptcy and marriages that mirrored the domestic violence she grew up with. There are no toe-tappers to lift the spirits here.

Spend, Spend, Spend is narrated by a Granny Viv looking back at her life and at the Young Viv living life to the full, and Julie Armstrong and Katy Dean are absolutely fantastic in these roles. They both give off a sexiness that cannot be faked.

The set is cleverly papered and littered with press cuttings as Viv has lived her life in the media for over 60 years.

Ultimately it is a sad story but one where we can only admire the spirit of this headstrong Yorkshirewoman.

Spend, Spend, Spend has won awards before and I can’t see why it can’t win awards again.

The chair dare WALKING INTO the dimly lit theatre Haydn and I saw the barber in the corner with a customer sitting in his chair getting a shave while the spectators found their seats, writes Regeana King...

The set and the costumes gave off an old fashioned feel. The audience was arranged in a triangular pattern around the action; the lights remained dim throughout the performance adding an air of mystery and a frisson of potential fear.

The barber is Owain Sawyer, Cardiff Dock’s cheapest barber and, like all barbers, likes to talk. And listen. In this dangerous part of town Owain has heard many a saga from sailors’ travels across the seas, so he has many a tale of his own to swap. Using accents and expression, Owain began his storytelling, aided by his helper adding sound effects and drama with various instruments.

The audience were involved in many ways as children were invited – or dared - to sit in the barber’s chair, or merely help to carry props across the stage.

At one point a mirror appears to drop from the sky, startling everyone, with a talking face in the mirror. Suddenly the lights went out and the young Haydn found this a bit scary. And every child should have a good scare now and again.

At the end the barber throws a drink at the mirror and sparks came flying out of it. We were impressed. This mix of story-telling, music and crowd participation is a little gem.

The first lady of crime fiction

ore than a hundred years before Miss Marple toddled on to our screens or Jessica Fletcher started sticking her nose in where it wasn't welcome, a pioneering writer from Southwark was creating the first ever female detective.

The mysterious and ingenious lady sleuth known only as 'G', occasionally known by her nom de guerre, Miss Gladden, was the creation of James Redding Ware, born in 1832 in the parish of St Saviour to a Southwark grocer and his wife.

Ware originally published ‘The Female Detective’ in 1864 under the pseudonym Andrew Forrester and it wasn’t until more than a century later that the truth of his identity was revealed.

The British Library have recently reprinted the original text with a Forward written by author of the No.1 Ladies Detective Agency series of books, Alexander McCall Smith, who gives an idea of how unusual and even absurd the concept of a female detective would have been considered in Victorian England.

Although these days we are quite used to seeing women walking around blood-soaked crime scenes in all their high definition glory, Smith writes of the 1800s: “Middle-class women did not engage in what were seen as '"unladylike activities”... there were many jobs that a woman simply could not be expected to do because they were viewed as unsuitable for finer female sensibilities. The idea of a woman being involved in the murkiness of criminal detection must have been radical and adventurous in Victorian

times: women simply did not do that sort of thing.”

When Ware’s book first hit the shelves, there were no official female police officers, let alone detectives in Britain.

The British Library considers ‘Miss Gladden’s’ “deductive methods and energetic approach” make her a forerunner to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes, written some twenty years later.

Like Holmes, ‘G’ works incognito, ingeniously tracking down killers while concealing her own identity.

In her first appearance, she

Like much crime fiction at that time, it is thought Ware’s writings were based on real life murders. Like his story, 'A Child Found Dead: Murder or No Murder?', which led to the author’s true identification when an earlier print was discovered, called The Road Murder, bearing Ware’s name. The grave tale of a toddler who was taken from his bed and had his throat slit in 1860 had the nation gripped for years. The body was discovered by servants in a makeshift toilet in the grounds of the house and the mystery of who killed

addresses the reader to say even her friends think she is a dress maker.

She goes on to declare: "I am aware that the female detective may be regarded with even more aversion than her brother in the profession…

Criminals are both masculine and feminine – indeed, my experience tells me that when a woman becomes a criminal she is far worse than the average of her male companions, and therefore it follows that the necessary detectives should be of both sexes."

'G', does not shy away from physical detective work, examining crime scenes and employing all manner of skill, subterfuge, observation and charm to solve crimes and, like Holmes, she regards

little Saville Kent endured until his half-sister, Constance, confessed in 1865.

In the Introduction to the recent reprint of The Female Detective, Mike Ashley speculates that it may have been Ware’s investigations into the Road Murder which led him to encounter a female detective of sorts, inspiring him to create the character Miss Gladden.

It is evident from newspaper reports from the time that in cases such as this the police did, on occasion, employ the talents of such female agents, though their identities were always concealed.

Ware’s stories certainly appeared to the public to be based on reality, as

evidenced by an impassioned letter submitted to The Times by two retired policemen in the 1800s. Former officers, John and Daniel Forrester were well known in their day as both bounty hunters and detectives and felt duty-bound to say they were not associated with Andrew Forrester, Ware’s pen name, nor the crimes of which he had written.

Ware lived on the Old Kent Road in the 1870s and in Hanover Street (now Highshore Road) in Peckham in the early1900s, so it is possible some of the grisly crimes he fictionalised happened on our very doorstep.

“THIS PLACE looks great,” said my little brother as we arrived at Assado, a new restaurant in Waterloo Road combining Indian, Brazilian and Portuguese cuisine. His enthusiasm was touching - but he was wrong, writes Joey Millar...

At a certain point in the journey of life, some things – staying up past 10 o’clock, Camden, eating in a restaurant – cease to be great by default. You value a good night’s sleep over late night television, you find nose rings bemusing rather than intimidatingly-impressive... and a restaurant does not promise much if it is near-empty on a Friday night.

For the grown-ups in our party, this was not a good start.

We ordered the marinated pickled octopus as a starter, a culinary choice that was daring enough to intrigue the adults and gross enough to attract the kids. What arrived resembled diced, freezing chicken pushed together into a sorry mess, with all the flavour and texture of a plate of... diced, freezing chicken. We also ordered some naan bread, which – while decent - took so long to arrive

at the table that it was nearly beaten by the bill.

The mains were better. I ordered the belly of pork Assado on shredded red chilli risotto. The slow-cooked, Goan-style dish was somewhat stodgy, but flavoursome and filling.

It was a smooth Indian style I wasn’t familiar with, more Jersey Royal than Jalfrezi.

The rest of our group ordered the prawn curry – which received a thumbs-up from my ever-generous brother - or the lamb xacutti, which also went down a treat with my mother and sister - much harsher

critics, if their comments whenever I cook are anything to go on. The dish, another Goan classic, boasts 21 different ingredients - essentially a who’s-who of the spice rack.

We left without ordering a dessert, as the mains were satisfying and filling enough – and anyway, due to the delay in arriving at our table the naan bread essentially served as our third course. We held a family summit while walking back to the tube station, trying to assess the restaurant’s success. On the one hand - bar the starters – the food was more than acceptable, with an enjoyable

twist on the usual Indian staples. On the other, naan-gate had really had a detrimental effect on moral, and the restaurant boasted about as good an atmosphere as the moon.

In the end, we were split down the middle – neither a thumbs up nor a thumbs down, the hand gesture equivalent of ‘meh’. It’s worth a visit if you’re looking for a new angle on skilfully-cooked Indian cuisine, but if you’d rather an evening in a place with a bit of a buzz – at home watching late night television, for example – it’s best to give it a miss.

1. Transport for London having consulted the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable carriageway and footway improvement works to take place on or near A100 Tower Bridge Road.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

(1) entering Bermondsey Street at its junction with A100 Tower Bridge Road, except pedal cycles;

(2) entering, exiting or proceeding in a southerly direction on Bermondsey Street between its junctions with Abbey Street and A100 Tower Bridge Road. Local access will be maintained between Abbey Street and Decima Street; (3) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on the A100 Tower Bridge Road access road fronting Nos. 108 to 114 Tower Bridge Road;

(4) stopping on A100 Tower Bridge Road between its junctions with Bermondsey Street and Green Walk;

The prohibitions will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

The Southwark Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) Charging Schedule was approved by Council Assembly on 25 March 2015 and came into effect on 1st April 2015. The Southwark CIL Charging Schedule has been subject to three rounds of public consultation and an Examination in Public.

The CIL is a new levy which will be collected from developers / landowners and will generate funding to help provide infrastructure that supports growth in the borough. Planning permissions granted on or after 1st of April 2015 which add one or more dwellings or lead to an increase in floorspace of more than 100sqm on a development site may be required to pay the Southwark CIL.

The CIL will be charged at a rate per square metre based on the proposed floorspace of developments (Gross Internal Area) and the rates will vary according to different types of development and locations.

The council adopted the ‘Section 106 Planning Obligations and Community Infrastructure Levy Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)’ on 1 April 2015. The SPD is part of the council’s planning policy framework and will be a material consideration in the determination of planning applications.

Section 80, Housing Act 2004 Notice is hereby given that the London Borough of Croydon in exercise of its powers under section 80 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) has on the 16th day of March 2015 designated for selective licensing the area of the London Borough of Croydon as delineated and edged red on the Map at Annex A. The designation shall be known as the London Borough of Croydon Designation of an Area for Selective Licensing 2015. The designation applies to any privately rented property subject to any statutory exceptions set out below.

The designation falls within a description of designations for which the Secretary of State has issued a General Approval under section 82 of Housing Act 2004: Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation and Selective Licensing of Other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2010 dated 30th March 2010. Therefore the designation need not be confirmed and will come into force on 1st October 2015 and unless previously revoked, this designation shall cease to have effect on 30th September 2020.

This designation applies to any house which is let or occupied under a tenancy or licence within the area shown at Annex A unless: a)

the house is a house in multiple occupation and is required to be licensed under part 2 of the Act the tenancy or licence of the house has been granted by a registered social landlord under Part 1 of the Housing Act 1996; the house is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under under Part 4 of the Act; or the house is subject to a temporary exemption under section 86 of the Act; or the house is occupied under a tenancy or licence which is exempt under the Act or the occupation is of a building or part of a building so exempt as defined in The Selective Licensing of Houses (Specified Exemptions) (England) Order 2006 SI 370/2006;

Upon the Designation coming into force on 1st October 2015 any person who operates a licensable property without a licence shall be guilty of an offence under Section 95(1) of the Act, and shall be liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction liable to a fine not exceeding £20,000. A person who breaches a condition of a licence is liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction liable to a fine not exceeding £5,000.

Annex A

In accordance with the Environmental Assessment of Plans and Programmes Regulations 2004 and European Directive 2001/42/EC the council prepared a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) screening report on whether or not the SPD was likely to have significant effects on the environment and consulted the three statutory consultees (i.e. Natural England, English Heritage and the Environment Agency). The council has determined under section 9 of the regulations that the SPD is unlikely to have significant environmental effects (and accordingly does not require an environment assessment) and the council has published a statement of reasons for the determination in accordance with section 11 of the Regulations.

Nineteen-year-old Cheeseman got one over Mbwakongo, 22, in the south-east London section of the tournament last week but on Sunday he came unstuck against All Stars boxer Kelvin Fawaz who was crowned London ABA welterweight king.

Fisher head coach Steve Hiser said: “The atmosphere for the fight with Mbwakongo was fantastic, it was simply electric. It was a fight that Ted won on points as he got on top of Chris and simply would not let up.

“To be fair to Chris he simply would not give up but Ted had too much for him on the night.”

He added: “I thought Ted had done enough over the three rounds against Fawaz but he lost on points. Ted was hitting him with the better shots and Fawaz was connecting with shots that

were more pitter patter.

“I thought he had done enough but it didn't end up that way. Ted is another of my boxers who has been out for a while so maybe he was a bit rusty, even against Mbwakongo, and although he didn't win the title I am still very proud of him.”

Across at Fisher's rival gym in Camberwell Lynn coach Samm Mullins was far from happy with the Great Britain trainers who sent Mbwakongo to a competition in Finland a couple of weeks ago.

He said: “I am fuming with GB as he has come back from a international tournament and straight into the ABA's and he was burnt out.

“It may come across as bitter but it wasn't fair on Chris who would not dream of using this as an excuse.

“It's great he won a silver in Finland but he comes back and has a week to prepare to face Ted, who is in my eyes another international boxer, and Chris could not be at his best.

“Ted won the fight fair and square but Chris was clearly not at his best.”

LIGHTWEIGHT DANNY Carr was put through the mill in the last week but he will represent Fisher ABC in the ABA finals on April 24.

Carr, 25, boxed four times in a week but had enough to beat Sam Bezzina, of West Ham ABC, on Sunday to make it through to the last eight of the England ABA championships.

In a busy week Carr picked up wins against Charlie Allision from Fitzroy Lodge, Jacob Thorn from Bodyshots before defeating Mason Smith from FinchleyABC and Bezzina to be crowned London senior ABA champion.

His coach Steve Hiser told the

The Camberwell club's head honcho believes boxers from south-east London have it especially tough, as they have to have to come through a difficult southeast London section before taking on other boxers from the capital who have often hardly fought at all.

Lynn light welterweight Charlie Driscoll, 21, made it to the quarter finals of the competition after boxing four times in a week to win his London title.

Mullins said: “Charlie had to fight four times and although lots of his bouts were close he did so well to come through to take the title on Sunday.

“He was like a lot of the south east

London boxers in that they did not have a lot left on Sunday. But he still won despite a hectic time where he boxed all over London in the last week.”

On the flipside of that Lynn flyweight Louie Lynn has not fought at all to qualify for Liverpool and Mullins believes it is time to ditch the divisional set up within the capital.

He added: “I think they should just throw everybody's name in a hat from across London and do a straight draw.

“Then the byes will even themselves out fairly. We had both sides as Charlie, like Danny Carr from Fisher, had to box four times to get a title whilst their opponents have had less bouts.

“Louie meanwhile didn't have to fight at all to go to Liverpool.

“At the moment I think it is largely unfair on boxers from south east London, as they have to fight more often against

“Their should be no splitting of the London divisions. You had fighters boxing on empty on Sunday, some came through that and others didn't but the whole thing is just not right.”

News: “Bezzina never boxed once before the final and Danny had to box four times. But he kept going and came out London champion.

“I thought the Allison fight was close and in the Thorn contest Danny looked jaded but he made it through to the finals weekend.

“Danny had not boxed for a while before this week but he wanted to give it a go and he did ever so well, his reward for all his dedication is that he is London champion this year and it looks like he will go straight to Liverpool now.”

The London qualifiers have been informed that they will go straight to the last eight of the competition which takes place on the weekend commencing April 24.

If Carr is to become English ABA king he will have to box three more times in three days over the same weekend.

McDonagh wins again

VETERAN BOXER Pete McDonagh picked an International Masters belt at the weekend after securing his fifth win on the bounce.

The 37-year-old is enjoying something of a renaissance in his career and his victory against Poland's Adam Grabiec means he has not been defeated in his last seven contests.

The Bermondsey boxer is hoping to build himself up for another British title shot as he hopes to become the next 'Cinderella Man' of boxing.

The points win in Birmingham leaves McDonagh with a career record of 24 wins, 28 losses and one drawn contest.

Hickeys double up

BOXING SIBLINGS Sacha Hickey and Aaron Hickey scored a family double last week when they both claimed wins at an Islington show for Fisher ABC.

Eleven year old Sacha, who is also a highly rated member of the Lionesses football academy, won on her debut in a Fisher vest whilst Aaron, thirteen, put in a whirlwind display of his own.

Coach Steve Hiser said: “Sacha made her debut for the club and she was sensational. She was up against somebody with a couple of fights under her belt but she was hitting her with uppercuts and everything.

“She was great and you have to hand it to her it was a great showing.”

He added: “Aaron starts the first round at 30mph and the next round he doubles his rate of work, and by the last round he is going 90mph.

“He beat a good boy from the Earslfield club and he is somebody who just keeps on going and he kept well on top of his opponent.”

Dominic Joyce, fifteen, bounced back from his semi-final loss in the junior ABA's with a unanimous points win on the same night as the Hickey siblings.

Scotney wins England debut

SIXTEEN-YEAR-old Lynn fighter Ellie Scotney picked up her first win in an England vest when she took on Irish counterparts in Dundalk last weekend.

The teenager, who was recently crowned the England Youth ABA lightweight champion, boxed twice in two days against highly rated opposition.

On Friday she overcame Ciara Sheedy before putting in an impressive display in defeat against Ciara Ginty, who medalled at the last Youth Olympic Games and will be part of the Ireland team for the upcoming World Youth Championships.

Her coach at Camberwell boxing club Lynn ABC stated it was another impressive weekend for the boxing rookie.

Samm Mullins told the News: “She has only had eight bouts and she took on somebody who is ranked five in the world in the juniors and beat her.

“The England trainers were delighted with her she took on somebody who is rated even higher and we are told she lost a close decision.”

He added: “She has come a long way very quickly so it's time for her to take a little break. I mean more from the international scene as that takes it out of you.

“We might put her out on a few club shows but we want to look after her and make sure she is good in the long term.”

The Rotherhithe club, who have lost nine times at Champion Hill this campaign, appeared to be heading for victory early on when striker Luke Haidarovic netted after two minutes.

But the Black and Whites failed to build on early dominance and held only a slender advantage at the break.

In the second period the Fish were blown away as Charlie Dickens equalised for the visitors before Philpott netted a 22 minute treble.

Manager Dean Harrison said after the game: “On Saturday in the second half players went through the motions and that is not acceptable.

“We were a goal up at half time having dominated the game but the second half was simply not good enough.

“The players know that and we were in the dressing room for 30 minutes afterwards. People were not taking responsibility on Saturday.

“Players want to take credit when we win but you also have to take responsibility too when you lose.

“This can happen with a young team likes ours but we have a performance level now and Saturday was not near that.”

On Tuesday night against Rochester

United the Fish got back to winning ways when an Alfie Roche strike ten minutes from time secured a 2-1 victory.

A late Haidarovic penalty miss didn't prove costly as Roche's winner came two minutes after Ricky Guthery equalised for the home side.

That win gave the Rotherhithe side a six point cushion over Erith, who sit in the sole relegation slot, but on Saturday that cushion was reduced by a point when Town picked up a point and the Fish fell to defeat.

Including their game two days ago against Rochester United the Black and Whites have seven games remaining this season and Harrison wants the majority

of those game to end with victory.

He told the News: “I said before Saturday's game against Deal Town I wanted four wins from eight games and now I want four from seven. If we get three wins I don't know if that will be enough but I would want that at the very least.”

Harrison is aware that this will not be easy to achieve, despite improved recent form, as many of the sides Fisher face are

at the opposite end of the league to them.

The Fisher manager added: “We have Lingfield away but we also play four of the top seven teams in our run in and I think it is the toughest run in of the teams around us.

“But where we end up is in our hands still and it is down to the players to show how much they want to survive in this league.”

He added: “There is still lots of work

to be done this season. The win against Erith Town was not the best performance and in fact we have played better and lost.

“But we were determined and defended really well and worked hard as a team and we got our rewards in that game.

“We came off the pitch battered and bruised as we knew we had been in a game.”

The Pink and Blues have not picked up three points since Valentines Day and they are now in real danger of missing out on the play-offs, when at one point this campaign they looked set to be title challengers.

Their latest loss came last weekend away at play-off rivals Wingate and Finchley where goals from Harrison Georgiou, Karl Oliyide and David Knight saw Hamlet fall to a disappointing 3-0 defeat.

Rose told the News: “We are in a run of bad form and it has come at the wrong time of season for us. That will not matter if we start picking up points again.”

He added: “There are lots of factors why we have not been in great form. One thing

is the home pitch is not in great condition and is not good for the football we play.

“We need to look at that as a club as we are not helping ourselves.”

Last month Dulwich picked up just two points from a possible twelve, after a similarly disappointing return in February, which leaves them in fourth place in the Ryman Premier League.

But after two month run where form and confidence seems to have deserted Dulwich they are still in control of their own destiny with five games of the season left to play.

Hamlet are four points ahead of the sides who sit just outside the play-off spots, as the teams vying for promotion also struggle with consistency.

The Hamlet boss added: “I think the fact we are still where we are in the league shows that teams around us are also not in great form too.

“It was the same last season in that there are no real outstanding teams in the league and sides are capable of beating each other Dulwich have not secured three points since Valentines Day on the day.

“It also shows that mentality is as important physicality cannot perform physically if your mind too. In fact it is more important as you is not right.”

A DEPLETED Stansfeld side gained another precious win on Saturday against local rivals Erith 147.

The weekend result was all the more pleasing, as Erith had done the double over Stansfeld last season.

Stansfeld dominated the early exchanges with top scorer Billy Shinners and Sam Ryan both having shots well saved by Erith keeper Michael Dill.

At the other end Stansfeld stopper James Bradley was a virtual spectator as Erith struggled to build any pressure.

The deadlock was eventually broken after good pressure from Harry Tatlock

forced a poor clearance from Dill, the ball dropped perfectly for Ryan who lobbed the keeper from 30 yards out.

Shinners twice came close to doubling the score before the break, but Dill held firm on both occasions.

Stansfeld struggled to get started in the second half but Ryan showed great composure when he was put clear midway through the half, calmly chipping the Erith keeper and doubling the Stansfeld lead.

A moment of madness saw Harry Fox bring down an Erith substitute on the goal line at the edge of the area.

The resulting penalty saw Erith skipper Danny Roots dispatch his spot kick into the bottom left hand corner of the net to halve the deficit.

LIONESSES’ DEADLINE day signing Rosella Ayane made a perfect start to her Millwall career scoring the opening goal in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Everton Ladies.

The nineteen-year-old only joined on loan from Chelsea three days before the match and she revealed that she did not expect to make the first eleven against The Toffees.

She said: “I didn’t expect to start at all.

I was thinking I’d be lucky to come on for fifteen minutes so I’m delighted to start.

“To get a goal has really topped it off and it was a very good team performance against a strong side. Personally I think Everton are going to go up this season.

“A goal is a goal and if you’re in the right place and anticipating where the ball

is going to go you’ve got to take your chance. To be honest I could have missed it but luckily it went in.”

Manager Dan Mlinar added: “We were set up to be tough, organised, aggressive and difficult to beat and we were, but then I don’t think either side looked massively like scoring from open play. That’s something we need to work on desperately but I’m very happy.”

The team included a familiar face to News readers as Cameron O'Connor was amongst the squad to receive a gong.

Readers of the News helped raise £3,500 for O'Connor in 2011, when he was eight, after he expressed a wish to take part in the Paralympics after being left with a prosthetic leg following a battle with meningitis.

The money raised helped him buy a special wheelchair which enables the youngster to participate in sports.

“Then you come here and you see kids in wheelchairs, you see kids with one leg, no legs and they’re still doing the same things that others are doing.”

Multiple medals for Southwark swimmers

SWIMMERS FROM Southwark Aquatics swimming club bagged a haul of medals and records at the recent London Youth Games Southwark Championships.

The trials took place to see who would represent the borough at the upcoming games gala where top swimmers from around the capital will compete.

A club spokesman said: “The medals came thick and fast and the team performed admirably. Lets hope

Following this success, a team of twelve attended the O Jays Open meet in Gillingham and also secured impressive results.

The spokesman added: “Personal bests were set in 98 per cent of the races. The team were awarded 29 medals including twelve golds, nine silvers and eight bronzes.”

SURREY HAVE re-signed exEngland star Kevin Pietersen as he seeks a platform that he hopes will see him return to the international set up.

Crisp Pringle secures cup win The Camberwell school overcame their Lambeth rivals and are now seeking to complete a cup double, having won the corresponding seven-aside tournament in January.

An even first half was followed by an avalanche of Brunswick Park goals in the second. Pringle opened the scoring after his turn and shot from the edge of the area found the net.

Left back Jahziah Linton's right foot drive doubled the lead before midfield general Rayen Wildman was pushed over in the box and Pringle stepped up to hammer home the penalty.

Pringle got his hat trick when he curled a free kick from inside the centre circle into the top corner to further extend the lead.

With five minutes remaining, Pringle again danced through the defence only for a Loughborough defender to intervene and put the ball into his own net.

A point would have been enough for the Southwark side on Sunday but on a heavy pitch, and with rain pelting down, the Kent side bagged the only goal of the game that keeps their title ambitions alive.

However the weekend fixture was Erith's final one of the season, and saw them leapfrog Docklands to top spot, whilst the Bermondsey outfit have two more fixtures to bag two points that will see them crowned champions.

A Docklands spokesman said: “In terms of football we were very much the better team and passed the ball well and created good opportunities to score.

“But unfortunately we didn't adapt to the conditions to the best of our ability and that at the end of the day cost us the game.”

He added: “The boys were disappointed about the result but we move on in high spirits as we always do and look to get the points we need to end the season on a high.”

The 34-year-old will be available for Surrey’s opening game of the County Championship season on April 19.

The South African born batsmen last played first class cricket for the Kia Oval outfit in 2013, although he has represented the club in Twenty20 cricket since that outing.

Pietersen said: “I’m absolutely thrilled to be back at Surrey. It’s a club very close to my heart and Alec Stewart, Graham Ford and everyone at the club has been exceptionally supportive.

“There is a fantastic group of lads here and hopefully we can deliver what the great Surrey fans want to see – lots of runs and comprehensive victories.”

New England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves has hinted a return to the national side is not out of the question for the 34-year-old if he 'scores a lot of runs' for a county.

The Kennington club hope that in turn will help them push for promotion out of Division Two of the county championship.

Stewart, Director of Cricket at Surrey, added: “A Kevin Pietersen with ambitions to play for England and a real determination to score big runs for Surrey will be a huge asset to us.”

THE SECOND Lewisham Police Community cup football tournament goes to plan bigger and better than last year’s tournament, hosting four teams including Lewisham Police, Lewisham College, Lewisham Islamic Centre and a team from Millwall Community Trust who hosted the tournament at the Lions Centre.

Last year’s tournament had three teams playing but this year we brought in Lewisham College, the standard of football throughout the tournament was excellent with all

the matches very close. After the group stage was complete Millwall Community played Lewisham College in the 3rd place play off, with Millwall winning 1-0 and finishing third. It was then a repeat of last year’s final between Lewisham Police and Lewisham Islamic centre in which the Islamic Centre won in 2014, the game started very close with both teams battling hard before Lewisham Police went 1-0 up with a screamer from the half way line, sending the spectators wild. With a few minutes to go the Islamic centre pulled one back levelling it up

before scoring the winner in the dying seconds to take the title for the second year running.

This tournament shows the great partnership work which is going on in Lewisham between the different organisations supporting people throughout the borough, showing that when organisations come together they can create change and make a difference to the people of Lewisham’s lives.

Premier League Kicks programme which Millwall organise throughout Lewisham, helping young people who have been involved with the Police guiding them on a better path, with 50+ young people having been engaged with so far, Dean Burrowes who manages the programme said “Lewisham police have been vital to the success of the programme,

especially Inspector Mick Chattenton and Sergeant John Biddle who have massively supported me and my colleague Tom Rolt to support young people in Lewisham.

The Addicks have not beaten the Lions since 1996 and have won just 10 of the last 66 matches between the two clubs in what has been a very one-sided rivalry.

The News caught up with Peter Finch, the Addicks' match-day commentator and radio show host, to preview tomorrow's clash in SE16.

It’s been the signings. Roger Johnson, who has come in alongside Tal Ben Haim, is a big organiser at the back.

Stephen Henderson returning from injury has also been important.

Charlton’s bad run started when Henderson hurt his shoulder. But the main factor has been Tony Watt arriving.

He’s taken all the pressure off of Igor Vetokele because he’s so direct, he scores goals and creates chances. When he runs at defenders, he scares the life out of them. Those three things have brought about a change. Peeters’ hands were tied a little because he had a team of eleven that could beat most teams on any given day but there was just no strength in depth. The signings of Johnson, Watt, Alou Diarra and Chris Eagles add a bit more to the squad.

Watt was training with the club before Christmas but didn’t sign until January, so he was actually a Peeters signing. He’s very popular with his teammates and he’s quite chatty with the local press. There was a lot of talk about his attitude at Celtic but he just wants to play games, that’s what he lives to do.

Free-kick specialist Jóhann Guðmundsson has also been earning rave reviews...

He’s hugely popular as well.

Whenever Charlton get a free kick on the edge of the box you know that Guðmundsson will step up and at least test the goalkeeper. His strike-rate from free kicks is very high - you just fancy him to score. Guy Luzon described him as the Championship’s David Beckham.

He really is deadly with that left foot and he’s full of confidence at the moment.

fans are extremely optimistic. But we have to temper that because we’re Charlton fans and we know what happens when we get optimistic.

Charlton’s form is pretty spectacular and the goals seem to be coming in threes.

They’ve scored three against Blackpool, Reading and Wigan recently. They aren’t brushing teams aside, their just taking their chances. Watt’s scoring and Simon Church has got two in his last two games, so everyone is chipping in.

Charlton won’t go up or down this season - so will they be as motivated as Millwall?

Jonnie Jackson is due back in full training so he’ll be getting the players fired up because the fans want this win more than anything. Charlton have been safe for a couple of games really and they’ve still been putting the performances in. The manager demands that they harry the opposition so Millwall won’t get any time on the ball. Charlton will be on them straight away. Three points at The Den is the only thing that matters to Charlton fans between now and the end of the season. We’d probably swap a couple of defeats just to get that one win.

ED UPSON and Shaun Williams are in a minority of players who are contracted to Millwall for next season.

Only eight other of their teammates are tied down beyond the summer.

So be it in the Championship or League One, Upson and Williams will have an important part to play in the club’s revival - either under Neil Harris or the club’s next permanent manager.

The midfield duo, who both arrived at The Den during the early weeks of Ian Holloway’s reign, sat down with the News this week to discuss their former boss and the start Harris has made to life in the dugout.

you were in and out of Q Ed, the team a lot under Holloway - how did that affect you?

EU: It was obviously difficult for me because I wanted to play every game and felt like I could be in the team playing every game.

Whenever I spoke to him he always said good things and kept me positive in a way, so I’ve got nothing against him. I just wanted to play more games and it’s as simple as that really. I’m happy to be playing at the moment and hoping to get some points on the board.

Q

What changes have been made since Harris took over?

SW: I feel there’s a bit more freedom to express ourselves. There seems to be a lot of enjoyment back in people’s day-to-day business.

Towards the end [of Holloway’s time in charge] I felt like I couldn’t put a foot out of place but now there’s a freedom and we can play our own game. Chopper has given a lot of people confidence in their own ability and that’s flourishing at the moment. Obviously we haven’t won a game yet, but things are a lot better than they have been.

EU: There’s a lot more freedom to training and in matches you’re allowed to make your own mistakes and not worry too much about it.

When any new manager comes in, everybody ups their game - that’s just the way it is. It probably shouldn’t be like that - you should be upping your game all the time but when there’s someone new, you have to impress. Even though he’s been here before, Chopper is still a new manager so you’ve got to try harder. There’s a higher tempo to training and everyone is desperate to do well.

Q

Shaun, you’re now playing further forward in a twoman midfield - how have you found that?

SW: I don’t mind where I play to be quite honest, but if I had a choice I’d play in a three-man midfield.

Not many teams play two in the middle, so you’re going to be twoon-three in most of the games.

Q

What’s the big difference between Harris and Holloway?

EU: The difference is that Chopper played here. He’s a legend and a hero, and the fans love him. He knows what they want to see and the fans know that he’s going to try his best for them. He puts that across to the players. He’s a man of the people so everyone respects him. That’s not to take anything from Holloway and what he said, but Chopper knows the club inside out, top to bottom. He’s been here for that long that he knows everything about Millwall. They are

managers with two different styles.

Q

If Millwall do get relegated, are you optimistic about your chances in League One?

SW: It’s not an easy league. There are a lot of big, big teams that are not stuck there - but they can’t get out of it. Some clubs get bigger attendances than ourselves or have

spent big money and it hasn’t gone too well for them. At the start of a season there are probably ten teams who could get promoted, whereas in the Championship there are only five or six. I’m sure that whoever is installed as the manager will know that if we start in League One next year, it won’t be as easy as some might think. If we do get relegated, hopefully we can get a decentenough squad together and have a right go.

EU: We had a squad that clicked and gelled in one season - that was all it took.

I played most of the games and there were seven or eight of us who played almost every game. But I don’t want to talk about League One too much because there’s still a job to do here. Obviously it’s going to be tough but it’s not

mathematically impossible so I think we should be focused on staying in the Championship. There’s no point thinking about Plan B yet.

EU: The run-in looks difficult and the position we’re in is difficult but if you win one game, you might win another and

another after that. You’ve got to rely on other teams to mess up as well, so I’m not saying that it’s going to be easy, but we’ve still got a chance. And while we’ve still got a chance, we should be going for it. We were gutted not to get a win from our last game. Brentford are pushing for promotion to the Premier League so to play that well against them and be 2-0 up was good anyway and you’d have taken a draw before the game, but draws are not good enough anymore. We have to try to win every game.

NEIL HARRIS reckons a fiery south London derby with Charlton presents the perfect opportunity for Millwall to end their “hoodoo” at The Den.

The Lions’ 13-game winless run at home, which stretches back to October, is the longest in the club’s history.

But Harris says the prospect of three points against the Addicks has got his players fired up.

“This, for me, is the most perfect fixture that we could have,” Harris told the News. “We’re excited by it and we’re looking forward to it, as are the fans.

“We know that it will be an extremely tough fixture because Guy Luzon has got Charlton playing really well and their results have picked up since he came in. It will be tough but we’re up for it.”

Millwall have drawn two and lost one of Harris’ first three games in charge.

“We’ve shown a lot of positives but the performances we’ve had haven’t been rewarded with the points that we’ve deserved, but you have to start somewhere,” Harris added.

“The biggest buzz of all is the fact that we’re coming together - the fans are identifying with the team and the players are fired up by the support they’ve had.

“All they need to do is keep giving what they’ve been giving because our first win isn’t far away, and that’s a real plus for us.

“We’ll go again on Friday and I’m desperate for us all - the whole club - to get back to winning ways at The Den and end this hoodoo.”

Harris knows from his playing days that clashes with Charlton are always of huge significance.

“I can’t wait for this one,” he

added. “This is one of the top games of the season. Irrespective of the league position the two teams are in, it’s a massive game.

“We’re certainly looking for a performance that backs up the performances we’ve had in the last few games. The boys don’t need to be told how big the game is.

“Considering our home form of late, for the boys to be looking forward to this so much and wanting to have a right go is testament to how far we’ve come of late.

“Yes, of course, it’s a local derby and there’ll be a big crowd so there will be a bit of anxiety and adrenaline but we as a group can’t wait and we’re looking forward to it.

“The players will give it their all because they know the fans are with them. The fans will see a confidence and an aggression in us that the situation demands.”

One of Harris’ last south London derbies as a player was a 4-0 victory over the Addicks during Kenny Jackett’s time in charge - when the Lions were a force to be reckoned with at The Den. “That’s what we want to recreate but it won’t happen overnight and we are all aware of that,” Harris said.

“We’ve got a group that’s coming together and a core of players that are committed to the club for next season as well, and they’re showing a togetherness.

“Yes, we’re tweaking things tactically and style-wise but that togetherness is what we asked for.

“The Millwall team that beat Charlton that day had come together over a period of time but it epitomised what the club’s about and what good Millwall sides have always had.

“That’s where we want to get to. I felt that process started against Brighton in small spells. We’ve got to sustain those spells and feel confident about playing at home.”

The Italian, who had not started a game since Neil Harris’ appointment as interim manager, swiftly moved to Birmingham City instead.

The one-time Italian international had become a popular figure on the terraces at The Den during his time in south London and Harris confirmed that he wanted Fabbrini to stay.

But the Lions were ultimately powerless to prevent him from leaving.

“Watford got in touch at 3.30pm, just before the deadline, to say they were recalling their player and sending him off to somewhere else because he was going to start games,” Harris told the News.

“We would’ve liked Diego to stay because he gave us something slightly different to what we’ve got.

“We asked if he could stay with us but ultimately Diego decided that he wanted to be back on the other side of London, because of family reasons, and also that he thought his opportunities here would be fewer.

“Diego only had three games left on his loan - and one of those would have been against Watford, which he couldn’t play in.

“The decision was taken out of our hands by Watford, which is fine because he is their

MILLWALL ARE already making plans for next season but final decisions on player contracts and Neil Harris’ future will not be made until their fate in the Championship is confirmed.

player. We were slightly disappointed that they decided to call him back because we’d have liked to have kept him.

“We couldn’t force the issue and make him stay, we could only ask the question.

Watford made the decision and Diego went along with it because he thought he’d get more chances to play at Birmingham.

“We wish him all the best and thank him for what he’s done for Millwall. Diego understood that the team had done really well and that he might have to be patient by coming off the bench, producing something and then getting a start.

“He’s a great fella who wanted to play.”

Harris considered bringing in a lastminute replacement for Fabbrini but fought a losing battle against the clock.

“We’re always open to strengthening,” he said. “We did look at a few options but decided to go with what we’ve got and give a few of our younger lads an opportunity. We didn’t want to block up a pathway for anyone.

“There’s no blame attached to Watford but by the time Diego’s recall was finalised at 4pm, we didn’t have time to get anything done.”

The Lions will be relegated to League One unless they can overturn a sevenpoint deficit in their remaining seven fixtures.

Harris is in charge until at least the end of the campaign, but the board will weigh-up whether to give him the job on a full-time basis once Millwall’s league status is known.

A number of players in the squad are due to become free agents in the summer but a “collective group of football people” is already discussing who is likely to stay and who will be let go.

Chief executive Andy Ambler told the News: “No decisions have to be made on out-of-contract players until May 16, and no decisions will be made until we know what our divisional status is going to be.

“There will be a group of people discussing these issues but Neil will definitely be part of the process. Andrew Mills, our new head of recruitment, Scott Fitzgerald and myself will also be involved.

“Dave Livermore is working with the first team now and Mick Harford knows the players too, so we’ve got a lot of football people around who are meeting regularly and having on-going conversations.

“We won’t wake up one morning and decide that today’s the day we’re going to sort out contracts, it’s already being looked at.

“It will be the people that know the players making decisions. Some of the decisions are obvious ones but some are dependent on which league we are in.

Harris’ role at the club moving forward will also be on the agenda soon.

“Neil is in charge for the last seven games and the board will review that when it is appropriate,” Ambler added.

“Once we know our divisional status, we can make some clear decisions.

“We’ve got three home games on the bounce and we’ll know a lot more after that."
