A MESSAGE FROM DR. AL ROBERTS, PRESIDENT

Signpost notices at SVCC’s campuses and a banner on the College’s website declare, “Success Starts Here!” This is not an idle boast. We have the facts to back it up. Consider the credentials our students receive. At the end of the most recently completed school year, SVCC awarded 1,347 degrees and certificates. Graduates included 549 students who earned academic honors based on cumulative grade point averages. These recognitions are cum laude (with honors), magna cum laude (high honors), and summa cum laude (highest honors).

More than 90% of our Associate Degree Nursing graduates go on to pass the state-required licensure examination on their first attempt. You can find SVCC nursing graduates working at the Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center, Meadowview Terrace, VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital, Centra Southside Community Hospital, Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, and virtually every other provider of health services across our ten-county service region.

Success stories span the entire spectrum of programs at SVCC. For example, Matthew Hamlett discovered a new career path through an apprenticeship opportunity affiliated with the Industrial Maintenance program. Detra Carr, an SVCC graduate, now works for the College as a Truck Driver Training Instructor. Joshua Worrell earned an AA&S degree from Southside and then transferred to Virginia Tech, where he received a bachelor’s degree. Joshua currently serves as the Director of Transportation for the Town of Blackstone. Brittney Roberts Weidman completed college-level courses at SVCC while still in high school, giving her a leg up on an academic journey that led to a master’s degree from James Madison University. Brittney now serves as Director for the Upper School and Student Activities at Brunswick Academy.

Thousands of other graduates can tell stories of similar successes. Our transfer programs provide a solid foundation for students planning to pursue baccalaureate and advanced degrees. Our occupational and technical education programs prepare students for entry into rewarding career pathways. Our workforce division serves the needs of students seeking industry-recognized credentials or pursuing specialized training. SVCC’s transitional programs give adults without a high school diploma a chance to increase their employability through skills remediation, high school equivalency, and career readiness credentials. Other programming provides assistance to former foster youth, out-of-school young adults, and unemployed or underemployed job seekers.

To help students move toward their personal goals, SVCC offers a full slate of support services. These include tutoring, academic advising, and career counseling.

We also help students overcome financial barriers. Last year, we awarded more than $6.5 million in grant and scholarship aid.

Access to education stands at the heart of SVCC’s mission, and we work hard to ensure that all citizens in the Southside Virginia region have the opportunity to pursue their own successes. Access, however, is only half the story. Outcomes measured in terms of student achievements comprise the other half. At SVCC, our outcomes are awesome.

LAND MANAGEMENT SUPERVISOR

April Harris is the Land Management Supervisor for Jefferson Memorial Forest (JMF), located in southwest Louisville, Kentucky. Covering 6,500 acres, it is the largest municipal urban forest in the United States. Harris is a 2010 graduate of Park View High School and a 2011 graduate of Southside Virginia Community College’s Honors Program. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Longwood University and completed a Master’s of Science degree from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2016. “SVCC is a wonderful school to start your college experience. The classes are small, professors really get to know their students and are there to help,” she said.

DOCTOR Saving lives and helping the sick and injured is a cool way to spend your working days. Michael Cieslinski started his higher education path at Southside Virginia Community College, transferred to Virginia Commonwealth University, graduated from VCU Medical School and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency through East Carolina University and at Vidant Medical Center. Currently, he is Emergency Room Doctor at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia and Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin. Coming to SVCC directly from service in the United States Marine Corps, he notes that he had no clear direction for his future and is thankful to faculty members who helped him define his course.

APPRENTICE IN INFORMATION SYSTEMS INDUSTRY

Matthew Hamlett was looking for a job and found an Apprenticeship.

The first step was to enroll at SVCC in the Industrial Maintenance program with a concentration in Electrical and HVAC. Secondly, he entered into an Apprenticeship program with ISS, a facilities management company for a local IT data center. Hamlett willingly accepted the task: long days at work, followed by long nights in the classroom, but soon it began to pay off. “It seemed as if what I learned in the classroom lined-up with the exact project we were working on at the data center”, remarked Hamlett. “In fact, this encouraged me to study more because I knew I would see it the next day at work”.

A+ TRUCK DRIVERS Sometimes a career upgrade is in order and these two gentlemen completed it with perfection. Both Mike Francis of Boykins and Travis Kidd of Franklin scored a perfect 4.0 in Southside Virginia Community College’s Truck Driver Training Class taught at the Emporia/Greensville site. Francis noted, “The school was a great experience for me at a time when I needed a career change.” An automotive technician, Francis wanted to get from under the hood to behind the wheel and upon graduation, began working for McElroy Truck Lines, a flat-bed carrier from Cuba, Alabama with a terminal in Pleasant Hill, North Carolina. Kidd had experience driving dump trucks and working with an oil company. He attended the SVCC program through a partnership with Paul D. Camp Community College. Kidd noted that it took him only a week to land a job and that he had multiple offers. He took a job with Cox Transportation, a long-distance carrier. He now hauls general commodities over the contiguous United States. He loves his new job and notes that there are so many different opportunities that one cannot go wrong.“This is a great way to support my family along with traveling, seeing the states and great job security,” Kidd said.

A ribbon cutting at the new Welding Lab at Southside Virginia Education Center in Greensville County was held in March of 2017. This venture represents a partnership between the college and American Equipment Company, Dominion Energy, Fluor, Greensville County, Southside Virginia Education Center, and Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission.

In 2008, Bobby Wrenn of Emporia and Freddie Reekes of Lawrenceville coordinated the 1st Annual Southside Virginia Community College Foundation Scholarship Golf Classic. Funds raised through the event support student scholarships. The SVCC Foundation Board voted to rename the annual golf tournament the Fred “Freddie” Reekes Memorial Scholarship Golf Classic. Freddie’s passing on May 7, 2017 shocked and saddened the Southside community.

Freddie spent 40 plus years in education, many at SVCC.

Commencement The commencement event awarded degrees, diplomas and certificates to 1,303 students. Those attending the ceremony walked across the stage to receive their awards from Dr. Al Roberts, SVCC President.

Stephen Parker, Director, Education and Workforce, National Governor’s Association (NGA), and a proud graduate of SVCC, was commencement speaker. Parker directs policy and advocacy for education and workforce issues, including: early childhood, K-12 and post secondary education, workforce development and child nutrition.

SVCC boasts awesome areas to visit with nice, inviting campuses. Events are held on the campuses to benefit the community such as The Taste of Brunswick Festival.

This event is held the second Saturday in October each year and celebrates the gastronomically delightful Brunswick Stew. Stew Masters compete for the Championship Stew Paddle and year-long best stew designation. Thousands attend the event that SVCC has hosted for the past 14 years. Last year, the Taste of Brunswick committee voted to award a commemorative Stew Paddle to Roger Wray for his dedication in providing support through the college’s Buildings and Grounds department in making the event possible. Roger and his crew work for many weeks before and after to assure that the grounds are beautiful, wired for electricity, safe and inviting for vendors, horse owners, and others assembling on the grounds.
