ASSISTANT GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Katie Lister

It gives me great pleasure to be writing this quarter’s newsletter as Brett is catching up with some well-earned leave.

What a busy few months it has been, and how time flies – never a dull day here at SYC. From many Members events to being awarded 2 awards at the Annual Club’s Qld dinner, it has been a full few months

Pontoon Lunch This year’s Pontoon Club celebration was a huge success, and it was an honor to be part of such an important occasion. This year was the 37 th anniversary, holding a luncheon this year, instead of a dinner, which was immensely enjoyed by all who attended. Chef did his magic in the kitchen, and we had clean plates around.

Recent Sailing Events

- The Ladies Race was held on Sunday 14 th April SYC. This was the 29 th anniversary of the Telemachus Ladies Day race held at Hollywell. Traditionally this is a muchanticipated race amongst our female sailors, with special handcrafted pieces of jewellery created just for the event. This year we witnessed another great turnout with sixteen boats competing for the perpetual trophy and some the beautiful handmade jewellery donated by Telman.

- The Twilight Series proved to be as popular as ever and this year was sponsored by Document Solutions. I have had the pleasure of attending a couple of the twilight races over the past few months and saw at first hand what a fun and energized series this is. If you haven’t already participated, then please see Vice Commodore of Sail and make arrangements to try it out. I can personally recommend it!

Oxenford Watersports Centre Our most recent venue at Oxenford is growing from strength to strength, with events taking place both on and off the water. Matt has been hard at work building up relationships with local schools, community groups and the Council. If you haven’t already, please pop out to see Matt the Oxenford Watersports Centre.

Main Beach Clubhouse Over the next few months you might see a quite a bit of activity out on the Eastern Lawn, as well as by the play area. I am excited to be able to inform you that we are extending the deck and roof and adding a new bar area. We are also putting a cover over the children’s play area to provide much needed shade for our younger patrons.

With our membership growing, this area will become a great space for kicking back and relaxing while enjoying a drink or two

6 | iN SYnC | Southport Yacht Club Anzac Day I was lucky enough to be invited to attend the Dawn Service on Anzac Day this year with Vice Commodore of Power. What a memorable morning to be part of Southport Yacht Club’s Marine Guard of Honour. This was the 6th year and proved to be a spectacular

visual way of remembering the landing at Anzac Cove on Sunday, 25 April 1915 when the first major military action was fought by Australian and New Zealand forces in the First World War.

Change to our Birthday Celebration Super exciting news we are upgrading things up with our monthly birthday draw. The birthday vouchers have changed a little, you will still go in the draw to win the $250 if you attend our birthday draw in your birthday month, however we have launched a new dining experience for those who share their birthdays each month. Those members whose birthday falls within the month will be able to attend our Mega Birthday Draw, this event is free of charge for the birthday participant, and your guests can dine for a small fee. Included in the price you will be able to enjoy a delicious 3 course meal, with a specially planned menu created by our Head Chef, as well as lucky door prizes and other exciting treats. I look forward to seeing you all their when your birthday comes around.

The annual Members Celebration day along with Mother’s Day was a massive weekend for all – I hope your all enjoyed it as much as we did. As you can image, we have a packed couple of months ahead, this would not be possible if it wasn’t for our hard-working team here at SYC.

I am so proud to be a part this amazing Family. I’d like to thanks all our volunteers who support us weekly with it being at Sailing and Power events, raising funds for our Associates committee, we couldn’t do it without you, and finally thank you to you – our loyal members – we wouldn’t be where we are today without your continuous support.
