At a glance with the CEO
It’s hard to believe we are half way through the year and Mantra at Sharks has celebrated its first birthday - how time flies! In its first year of operation, the hotel welcomed 23,413 guests and 9,730 arrivals. As a recipient of the Guest Review Award for 2018 from Booking.com, we consider this an incredibly successful opening year. The opening of the hotel has brought in the return of our daily breakfasts, available to all members, visitors and hotel guests. Frenzy’s buffet breakfast has quickly become a favourite for patrons, with a wide range of healthy and heart-warming options available everyday. I encourage you to visit the club and try it out. Another exciting event for the year is our Annual Carlton Draught Celebrity Sports Lunch. Taking place on 19 July at Sharks Events Centre, we have an exciting line-up of celebrities and sporting legends. Sam Kekovich will return as host, with our keynote speaker David Foster OAM – World Champion Woodchopper. Soldier-turned-athlete Curtis McGrath will join Peter “Spida” Everitt on the couch to tell his story of using sport as a tool for rehabilitation and motivation. One of Australia’s favourite comedians Tom Gleeson is sure to be a crowd favourite too. This annual event sells out every year, so I encourage you to book early. Finally, congratulations to our 2019 NEAFL team who have had a great start to the season. Southport Sharks is the perfect venue to watch the game, live from the comfort of Frenzys lower dining room or Cabana Bar & Lounge. On behalf of the entire club, we wish the team continued success on the field. We look forward to seeing you at the club soon.

GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY Southport Sharks has an established Community Study and Development Program, as a part of our commitment to the wider community.
I
n 2019, we continued our partnership with Griffith University by offering an internship to a student within our Human Resources team. We spoke with our intern, Tegan Kavanagh, who joined us through April and May, about her experience.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF… I’m in my third year at Griffith University studying a Bachelor of Psychological Science/ Bachelor of Business; majoring in Human Resource Management. My career ambitions upon graduating are to enter the field of Human Resources, where I can develop my interests in Organisational Psychology into a professional skillset. WHAT EXPERIENCE HAVE YOU GAINED AND HOW HAS THIS COMPLEMENTED YOUR STUDIES? It’s one thing to learn the theoretical content of Human Resources at university, but to be able to see it in action within a well-run business PAGE 4
has been a completely invaluable experience. Interning with Ann-Maree has given me a great insight into how much work goes in to the recruitment and onboarding processes and how rewarding it is to see the positive effects these processes have on the overall business. This internship has really benefitted my studies as it has allowed me to transfer the knowledge I have gained from classes into the workforce. WHAT DID YOUR FIRST WEEK ENTAIL? Ann-Maree tasked me with sorting through paper files to give me an understanding of the current recruitment processes in order to identify areas for improvement. Since then, I have worked with the team to implement a paper-free system. INTERNSHIP TIPS Take notes! I have many step-by-step “How-To” lists in my internship folder. Not only does this help to become comfortable with company processes, it also allows you to show some initiative in the workplace when you can come in the following week and do it on your own (rather than repeatedly asking the same questions).

Mantra at Sharks is proud to support local business, partners and charitable organisations. Some of the initiatives Hotel General Manager, Gabby Daniels and the team have established to consider the environment and the community aims to address: water consumption, wastage and support for local charities. ENVIRONMENTALLY RESPONSIBLE Water In keeping with Mantra at Sharks commitment to be environmentally responsible and reduce water consumption, our un-serviced room offering allows our hotel guests to help us retain our precious water resource that needs to be conserved today and in the future. Wastage Making soaps, vanity kits, shower cap and sanity bags available on request, rather than pre-supplied allows the hotel to save on unnecessary wastage. On a monthly basis, the hotel delivers unclaimed lost property items and unused amenities to Rosies – Friends on the Street. PAGE 6
The hotel has improved the efficiency through environmental best practices offering the unserviced room rates, which reduces linen usage, and also by the airconditioning of units through individual room temperature control. COMMUNITY SUPPORT A donation for every un-serviced room booking goes towards Southport Sharks Community Benefit Fund, with a focus on our existing charity partnership with the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation (GCHF) as many of our guests stay with us while family are in the hospital. In April 2019 the offer to support the GCHF became available to guests.

n conjunction with Gold Coast Girls in Business, Sharks Events Centre introduces a comprehensive event, aiming to support couples at every stage of the marriage process. From getting down on one knee to jet-setting off on a dreamy honeymoon, Destination I Do aims to exhibit a range of suppliers to provide everything from venues, audio-visual and catering to the finer details such as stationery, cake design and souvenirs. Destination I Do is a FREE PUBLIC EVENT with a key objective to promote 'keeping business local' throughout the Gold Coast, Northern Rivers and Brisbane region.

REPORT
The defending NEAFL Premiers have kicked off the 2019 season in style with early season victories which have us once again vying for a top spot on the ladder. Following on from a historic season in 2018, Sharks have recruited some new talent on and off the field to try and repeat the success of last year. Former Port Adelaide Captain and Coach, Matthew Primus has joined the club as Midfield Coach and former test and origin Rugby League star, Michael Crocker is also on board as Tackling Coach. These two additions have added to what was already a very talented coaching group.
Five of the 2018 Premiership Team departed the club over summer including Tom Wilkinson who was drafted by North Melbourne. The replacements for 2019 include former AFL players Matt Shaw, Mackenzie Willis, Tom Fields and Josh Williams. The Leadership Group for 2019 has increased to seven, with the addition of former Kyabram defender Rhys Clark and former Gold Coast Sun, Josh Hall. Premiership Co-Captains Seb Tape and Andrew Boston will once again lead the team this season. The first part of the season will be challenging with four of six games to be played away. Four home games during June will enable us to gain some mid-season momentum before a finish that includes games against NEAFL heavyweights Brisbane and Sydney. It would be great to see Southport Sharks members head down to Fankhauser Reserve for any of our nine Saturday home games. I guarantee a great afternoon of Australian sport and entertainment!
