At a glance with the CEO

After a history-making NEAFL season last year, the Sharks are excited to return to the field in 2019. In this edition, we introduce you to a number of new recruits and find out why they are looking forward to donning the black and white jersey and playing some quality football this season. Read more on pages 30 and 31. Sharks’ first home game is on Saturday, 6 April at Fankhauser Reserve and we encourage our members and guests to come down and show their support by watching the game in the club or around the ground. Go Sharks! In February, we proudly presented the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation (GCHF) with a $24,000 cheque in support of the Cancer Patient Transport Service. These funds were raised through the Sharks Community Benefit Fund which donates $1 from every membership fee to our charity partners. The GCHF team are grateful for the ongoing support Sharks’ members have shown over the past nine years of the partnership. Our community feature in this edition of Bite explains the benefits of the transport service and also highlights the community gardens project that we have supported - see page 6 and 7. At Sharks, we strive to offer our members exceptional service. In doing so, we believe it is important to recognise staff members who go above and beyond for our guests. Annually, we present one team member a Golden Shark Award, to acknowledge the passion and pride demonstrated in their role at Sharks. We congratulate all nominees and especially Toby Searson from the Gaming department who won the 2018 award! Thank you for your continued support. Dean Bowtell Chief Executive Officer

GOLD COAST HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Southport Sharks continues its commitment to the local Gold Coast community, through our charity support program

I

t is with your donations Southport Sharks has raised over $186,000 for the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation (GCHF) since 2011. This charitable, not-forprofit organisation aims to improve public health education, research and care for the Gold Coast region. Two recent projects we’d like to share with you are the Community Garden and Cancer Patient Transport Vehicle.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Community Garden provides a calm environment for the patients, staff and the community. Through $7,500 of funding donated by Sharks to concrete the garden, the space now provides benefits far beyond growing healthy food. It is a regular spot for patients and staff to share relaxed meals and de-stress by connecting with nature. Herbs are also regularly harvested to use for organic, herbal teas. Upkeep of the garden serves as an excellent way to relax the mind and recover from trauma, which the emergency department team have found extremely effective for patients and clinicians alike. Volunteers also visit the garden, PAGE 6

offering gardening advice and support to those who are interested in learning more about the broad health benefits of working and growing their own fruit and vegetables. We met Margot (pictured) who is passionate about the garden and raising awareness of local plants used by Aboriginal people not only to flavour food but to heal, such as the Lemon Myrtle. The garden has become a symbol of connection between the community and health service workers and is another example of how Gold Coast Health aims to cultivate a healthy community.

Far Left: Community Garden Left: GCHF Community Garden Volunteer, Margot. Below: Cancer Patient Transport Service

CANCER PATIENT TRANSPORT SERVICE According to Cancer Council Queensland, over 3,600 people throughout the Gold Coast are diagnosed with cancer each year. This puts tremendous stress on families and support networks to not only handle this diagnosis but to also organise transport for their loved ones to and from treatment. If friends or family are unable to help, public transport can be uncomfortable and expensive for individuals already facing the financial pressure of cancer treatment.

The Cancer Patient Transport Service has been in operation for nine years, five of which have been funded by the Gold Coast Hospital Foundation. Three vehicles transport patients from Coolangatta to Coomera, Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm. The service operates 50-weeks a year and provides a way to and from treatment for approximately 2,000 cancer patients throughout the Gold Coast. The hard-working drivers make approximately 7,000 trips each year for patients who cannot afford transport or do not have friends or family to help. Through the Sharks Community Benefit Fund, $24,000 has recently been PAGE 7

donated towards the ongoing expense involved in running the vehicles; to ensure the comfort and safety for travelling patients. The service provides peace of mind for both patients and their family and friends. Knowing their loved one has a safe and comfortable way of travelling to and from treatments serves as an invaluable peace of mind component of the cancer recovery process. TEAM MEMBER PROFILE

MANTRA AT SHARKS Mantra at Sharks has now been open for 12 months, including the opening of Aviary Rooftop Bar. In January 2019, the hotel was extremely proud to be recognised by Booking.com as the winner of the Guest Review Award for 2018. This award recognises exceptional hospitality, as reflected in reviews left by guests after their stay. This is a fantastic achievement within our first year of operation.

W

e are excited to announce a number of new focusses for 2019, such as complimentary access to Southport Sharks Health + Fitness during a stay at the hotel. Secondly, we are thrilled to be able to cater for the growing accessible tourism market, with Mantra at Sharks well placed to lead the way with its newly established Studio Queen Accessible & King Suite Accessible room types. These rooms have been specifically designed for guests with additional access needs. They feature an automatic opening front-door and bathroom-door, a large bathroom with roll-in shower and grab bars, plus interconnecting carers rooms. Mantra at Sharks aspires to ensure it offers accommodation and inclusive tourism for everyone.

The Gold Coast has experienced record tourism expenditure as noted in the most recent National Visitor Survey, conducted by Tourism Research Australia. Mantra at Sharks continues to welcome travellers from China, which is an immense opportunity for Southport Sharks and the local community. We are looking forward to welcoming members to the hotel with the introduction of our AFL Supporters Package. Gabby Daniels General Manager - Mantra at Sharks

Sharks Events Centre team was thrilled to welcome Michele Marks to a newly created role of Sales Manager in 2018. Michele brings a wealth of industry knowledge and 21-years experience working with local, national and international markets, specialising in corporate experiences - events, meetings and conferences.

UP CLOSE WITH MICHELE Tell us a bit about yourself? Apart from being a mum of two girls, step-mum of two boys and nanna to two more boys (keeping my laundry always full and my fridge empty), my personal passions are food, music, travelling and events!

MICHELE MARKS

If you don’t find me with my head in a good book, I will be checking out the latest live music venues, visiting regional festivals or planning the next 3-day weekend or overseas trip. Where did you grow up? I grew up in the lolly cabinet of my parents’ corner milk store on Sydney Road in Balgowlah Heights, NSW. Growing up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney gave me a great lifestyle and surf culture. My parents opted to head north in the 80’s, and I completed my education on the Gold Coast. What is your favourite holiday destination? Anywhere I can be with my family whilst immersing myself into another environment. With a few overseas trips under the belt, Budapest and Florence are currently top of the list. After a recent 7-day outback tour of the Barcaldine Region, SW Queensland, however, I equally love to visit small country towns steeped in Australian history. How long have you worked in the industry and what made you decide to pursue a career in event management? I started working in banquets at Movie World, getting the bug to entertain guests from my first shift. My proudest achievement is winning a National Operations of the Year Award, from the Meetings & Events Association (MEA). What do you enjoy most about corporate event management? If I said the long hours, back-breaking labour, on-the-spot decision making required to keep events on track… you may never believe me when I say everything! We get to deliver dreams for clients that become memories, support their business growth and create lasting impressions of positivity. Any advice? • Know your budget • Listen to experts • Don’t be afraid to try something new For more information regarding Sharks Events Centre corporate and business functions, phone Michele on 5532 1155 PAGE 10

FITNESS ROUTINE H OW TO AVO I D T H E

winter blues Living on the Gold Coast, we are lucky to have warm weather throughout autumn. The challenge is to not take steps backward as the weather cools down. We all know how appealing it is to stay in bed for an extra-long sleep in or watch a few extra episodes of your favourite Netflix series. At Southport Sharks Health + Fitness (SSH+F) we recommend using autumn to consider creating a routine to keep the momentum flowing through winter. Here are some suggestions: N AT U R EÂ

Without the heat and humidity, outdoor workouts are more comfortable. Take this opportunity to mix up your routine and make the most of our city. Running, bike rides, stand-up paddle boarding, and nature walks are all great ways to build your fitness.

C L A S S E SÂ Working out with other people creates a unique energy, especially in a group fitness class setting. Doing a few classes a week will create a social aspect to your fitness routine, to help with motivation.

KEEP IT INTERESTING If you tend to gravitate to certain cardio machines, change things up. Try our new boxing functional training area. Keep your workouts fun and interesting to help make your exercise habits stick.

GREAT AMERICAN ROCK SHOW US

WEEKEND

FRIDAY

MARCH

|

8.30PM

-

LATE

The USA is arguably the land where Rock was born, a genre that uniquely encapsulates the sounds of Blues, Gospel, Jazz and Country music. The Great American Classic Rock Show features hits from some of the greatest artists from the late 40s and early 50s - from the raw, high-octane passion of Bruce Springsteen, Suzi Quatro, to the blues-based rock of Fleetwood Mac and The Doobie Brothers. We spoke with the band ahead of their show in March. Can you give us an idea of what to expect from the Great American Rock show? Big anthem sing-a-longs and a whole lot of real, honest rock. In short, our show is loads of fun! Who’s your biggest US Classic Rock inspiration? There’s just too many to choose from. If we had to say a few; The Boss, The Eagles, Guns & Roses, Bon Jovi, Creedence and Billy Joel. All different and iconic in their own way. What are some crowd favourites? A few that really pop are Devil Gate Drive by Suzi Quatro and Piano Man by Billy Joel, but our number one crowd pleaser has to be Meat Loaf's Paradise by the Dashboard Light. Lead vocalists, Miss T and Dr Jay truly personify the performance and sing their heart out.

How did the band form? We used to strictly perform as a Meat Loaf tribute but five years ago, we received a request for an Independence Day USA theme. We fell in love with the genre and it really showed on the night. The show was so successful that we had to keep it going! Who are the band members? We comprise of Miss T and Dr Jay on lead vocals, Rob Hackwood on both keys and vocals and the brilliant Marcus M on drums - it’s a formidable line up!

UK CLASSIC ROCK SHOW PM - LA TE MA RC H | 8. 30 23 AY RD TU EE KE ND | SA US VS UK W

While America remains the birthplace of Rock, the British refined it and in the view of some, improved it to create what we know today as UK Classic Rock. The 60’s, 70’s and 80’s represent the golden age of this genre, exemplified by legends such as The Rolling Stones, The Who and The Beatles. The UK Classic Rock Show aims to reproduce the music from this era, performing hits from all of the above as well as Queen, David Bowie, Deep Purple and the great Led Zeppelin. We had a chance to get to know the band's show a bit better. What is it about UK Classic Rock that you love?

Which songs have you found to be crowd pleasers?

That’s easy, there’s nothing better than British Rock! It’s the birthplace of The Beatles, The Stones and Led Zeppelin - three of the most influential bands in history.

This genre offers so many but our top five performances have to be - Don’t look back in Anger by Oasis, Hey Jude by The Beatles, Rebel Yell by Billy Idol, Revolution by The Beatles and Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin.

Describe the UK Classic Rock Show in three words!

Tell us how the band started playing UK Classic Rock.

Exciting. Anthems. ROCK. How do you think UK Rock music compares to your US counterparts? I’d say that is up to the crowd. We will put on the best show we can, but we can agree it will be a close race!

We originally formed as the sister band to the Great American Rock Show, but the show became a success and talking point in its own right, so we decided to make it a set of its own. We are very proud of the setlist and the crowd engagement we get everytime we do this show. ENTERTAI

Golden Shark 201 8 EM PLO YEE OF THE YEA R

The annual Golden Shark Award is presented to a team member who displays dedication to their role, works well in a team and consistently provides positive experiences to our patrons. From the nine outstanding nominations, Toby Searson, from the Gaming and Promotions department, was awarded the 2018 Golden Shark and a travel voucher by CEO Dean Bowtell. Toby joined the Sharks family in early 2017, displaying strong teamwork and leadership skills in Gaming. It didn’t take long for him to become a well-respected member, receiving a promotion to Team Leader in early 2018. Toby describes working at Sharks like being a part of “a big family” and admires how “staff support each other and create a unique atmosphere of friendliness and comfort, which our patrons consistently return to enjoy”. Gaming and Promotions Manager, Peter Idder nominated Toby for the award as he “consistently displays an eagerness to learn new skills and has

grown immensely over the last 12-months as both a gaming professional and a team leader”. Toby plans to put his well-deserved travel voucher towards a mid-year trip with his partner to a destination that has always been on his bucket list- Europe. Starting off in Düsseldorf, Germany, Toby will visit his partner’s family before taking off to Amsterdam, Munich, Paris and the UK. He expects the highlight of this trip to be his visits to Disneyland Paris and Harry Potter Studios in London! “Winning the Golden Shark Award for 2018 has shown me on a more personal level that hard work and enjoying what you do makes an extraordinary difference. Southport Sharks recognises and rewards staff for their dedication to the business and I feel privileged to work alongside so many new and close friends” – Toby Searson. Congratulations Toby!

Why Southport? After meeting Steve Daniel and seeing the strong culture the club has built, it was honestly a no brainer. The facilities and rich history at the club are amazing.

Why Southport? After rupturing my ACL at the start of 2018, and being delisted from Gold Coast SUNS, I was hungry for another shot at AFL. I believe the profile of NEAFL and the high standard of football played by Sharks presents a great opportunity. Southport is a professionally run club with a suite of AFL system coaches and I was keen to reunite with them after our time together at the SUNS. Having moved from Hobart and now settled on the Gold Coast with my partner, I feel right at home and look forward to helping the Sharks continue its winning tradition.

Why Southport? After playing in the WAFL for two years, I was looking to take my footy to the next level. Southport showed a lot of belief in me and helped me achieve this. My first impression was the presence of mateship around the club, which really appealed to me. The recent success and history of the club shows it is something special to be a part of and I couldn’t wait to be onboard. With the impressive facilities and coaching staff, it was an offer I couldn't resist. I’m really looking forward to contributing to what I hope can be another successful year for Sharks!

Why Southport? The challenge of taking the next step with my football was something I had always wanted to do. Having played under Steve Daniel in 2011, I knew he would be the right coach to maximise my potential and to continue the club’s proud history. Living on the Gold Coast was also a huge draw card, as here you can really strike that work / life balance.

Why Southport? I have great respect for the way Steve Daniel coaches and connects with his players to get the best out of them. I also have a lot of good mates, ex-team mates and coaches from my career at the Gold Coast SUNS on the team.

Why Southport? Southport gave me the opportunity to further my development and put me on a path to achieve my aspirations in football. The club has a fantastic culture, amazing resources, facilities, coaches and staff. Southport is the place to be!
