Our staff here at Southport Magazine has been referring to this issue as the “Old School” issue all month while gathering our content, not because we are heading back to school this month; however we are and it’s very exciting! But because of all the memories each story ignites. Whether they are our personal memories or a scene in a movie, starting a new school year seems to have made us nostalgic for the old days. There are a couple of times a year when a Polaroid picture is all it takes to bring back memories of the past that are so clear that I can smell the Jovan Musk Oil or taste the peach Lip Smacker and this is one of those times.

While going through our monthly creative process, Kris and I found ourselves having a number of conversations about what it was like when we were kids. The Oak Island Surf Off had us sharing about beach days of the past and old movies that we lovedFrankie Avalon, Annette Funicello and Gidget! Can’t you just hear the music!! Flashes of Sun-In, lemon juice, Hawaiian Tropic, and Tab fill my thoughts. We had a blast shooting the photo for the cover! More beach memories in the making there!

We also got to talking about what our parents were like during that time. Remembering our fathers coming home from work and preparing their cocktails with precision while our Mothers would prepare dinner; lipstick, hair and outfits – just so. If I sit here with my eyes closed I can still smell my Dad’s cologne and taste the olives he liked to put in his drinks. Even hear him whistling while he turned on some soft dinner music.

Our Cheers story will not only teach you how to create an Old School cocktail but will more than likely bring up memories of your own.

This month also marks the beginning of Football Season! We couldn’t be happier!

The event will be held at Ocean Crest Pier and the surf off competition will begin at 8 a.m. All age groups and all surfing abilities are welcome to participate in the event.

Observers are encouraged to attend! There will also be a SUP (standup paddle boarding) race beginning at 8:15 a.m.

Winners of these competitions will receive surfboard medals. Other prizes include surfing accessories such as rash guards, t-shirts, and other gear. There will be categories for boys, girls, men, and women in the surf off competition. Each division will be separated into 15 minute

heats. Four judges will rate each participant. The final heat in each division will be 20 minutes long.

Registration has begun! Until Sept. 2, the entry fee is $25 plus $5 per additional competition category. After Sept. 2, an additional $10 will be added to the above prices as a late registration fee. n September 10, veterans, active military personnel and their families can take advantage of a special day of recognition designed to thank them for the sacrifices they make. Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry is participating in a nationwide program, called Freedom Day USA, that’s aimed at thanking those who serve to protect our freedoms.

With offices on Oak Island and on N.C. 211, Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry plans to offer selected dental services to approximately 60 patients. Services are by appointment only, and include a free cleaning, filling, crown, or extraction.

“Our men and women of the Armed Forces make great personal sacrifices in order to secure and protect our freedoms,” said Dr. Robert Martino, founder of the Freedom Day USA event. “Their

families have endured hardships and some have given all they have so that we may live in peace, free to pursue our dreams.”

Dr. Martino started Freedom Day at his chain of dental offices in West Virginia in 2013. In the release about this year’s events, Dr. Martino also thanked Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry’s Dr. Aaron Wilharm for participating in Freedom Day; Dr. Wilharm is actually a state director for the Freedom Day event.

Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry Director of Community Relations Ashley Pate said this is the third year the office is participating. “It is a way to say ‘Thank you’ and give back to our military active duty members and veterans,” she said. Five dentists work with Coastal Cosmetic Family Dentistry — Gregory Hohl, Darren Harrington, Aaron Wilharm, Tony Michelakis, and Matt Miller.

Also called peinture sur le motif (“painting what the eye actually sees”) in French, artists have painted outdoors for centuries. The popularity of painting en plein air increased with the introduction of paints in tubes and the “Box Easel” or field easel.

It is not certain exactly who invented it but because of its portability it made it easy to carry about and as a result, painting in the woods or on a hillside was made possible.

You might recall scenes in movies or images in books of high society daughters traveling abroad to learn to paint or study light while strolling in gardens and picnicking in parks.

Wooden Boat Show

T

hey never fail to draw crowds to the coast for festivals and celebrations, and the 6th Annual Southport Wooden Boat Show will be no exception.

Brought to Southport by the SWBS Committee, a 501(c)3 organization, the Wooden Boat Show will be on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Boats will be on display on land and in the water in and around the historic Old Yacht Basin in Southport. Festival-goers will be able to meet and talk with wooden boat makers and owners, and to vote for their favorite boat for the People’s Choice Award. A team of judges will also award three other prizes: Best Powered Boat, Best Non-Powered Boat – Row/Paddle, Best Non-Powered Boat – Sail, according to the event website, www.southportwoodenboatshow.com.

Last year’s winners included Best Sail to Lookout, Vic Fasolino of Beaufort, NC; Best Power to Anali, John Redington of Southport; Best Row/Paddle to Cosine Wherry, Robert Erickson of Wilmington; and the People’s Choice Award went to Jill, L. A. Overcash of Landis, NC. The Nauti-kids events will return to this year’s show, in which young would-be sailors will be able to build (with or with-

out help) their own boats and test their sea-worthiness. All the supplies they’ll need to build and decorate their boats will be provided. Exhibits from the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher and the Fort Fisher Underwater Archeology Branch will also be part of the day’s activities.

More boats, both in and out of the water, and more nautical/ maritime Arts and Crafts vendors are expected at this year’s show, which has been growing every year, according to the website. Nautical and maritime demonstrations are planned along the waterfront, and the model boat exhibit will return to the old Visitor Center in Southport.

The boat owners love talking about their vessels, and welcome the opportunity to give visitors tours. Boats on display lead visitors on winding trail along the Yacht Basin, making a leisurely stroll along the water even more special.

A new collectors’ quality poster has been designed for the show, which will be available for sale prior to the show at the Southport Visitors Center, at the Ricky Ev-

ans Gallery, and at the NC Maritime Museum at Southport, as will the special edition T-shirt for this year’s show. Both will be available at the show from the Ship’s Store tent. A signed and framed original poster will be up for raffle, with tickets available from any SWBS staff member, and at the Ship’s Store tent.

There will also be other raffles; tickets will be sold at the Wednesday Farmers Market in Southport and at information booths at the show. The Georgetown SC 25th Annual Wooden Boat Show, held in October 2014, featured a special Sunday event termed the Master Boat builders Challenge. Several teams of past Wooden Boat builders Challenge winners were given the same materials as those provided the Saturday contestants. However, they were allowed to build any boat they chose and the boats were judged on the quality of workmanship.

Mark Bayne of Charleston, South Carolina and Rob Dwelley of Hope, Maine chose to build the TEAL double-ender design by Phil Bolger of Gloucester, Massachusetts. They had both been early competitors in the Georgetown challenge but had never teamed up together. They won the competition, according to information on the Wooden Boat Show website. Wooden boat lovers will want to know that this was the first design used in the National Boatbuilding Challenge when it was started in the late 1980s or early 1990s.

Bayne and Dwelley generously donated the boat to the Southport Wooden Boat Show for the raffle. Ted Dingley of Boiling Spring Lakes installed three seats, applied epoxy and painted the boat.

Other raffle prizes from event sponsors will also be available.

Registration for displaying a boat is only $25. Boat exhibits are limited to boats whose main structural strength is made from wood, according to the registration information. External applications of fiberglass, plastic, canvas, etc. are acceptable. Commercial and non-commercial exhibits are restricted to maritime/nautical themed subjects and require the submission of photos (non-returnable) and pre-approval of the Committee.

The Southport Wooden Boat Show’s purpose is to promote interest in and disseminate knowledge of the craft and art of wooden boat construction, to support efforts to preserve wooden boat construction and skills and to celebrate the region’s maritime and boatbuilding history.

n the 19th century, Oktoberfest was celebrated in Munich, Germany, as a way to celebrate the wedding of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Known as the world’s largest public festival, Oktoberfest will be enjoyed by almost seven million visitors this year alone. The event is held annually running for 16 days from late September to the first weekend in October. Special Oktoberfest Beer is brewed and 7.7 million liters are served over the 16 day period. Music, games and Bavarian fare accompany this fun filled event.

Fortunately, for those of us who can’t make it to die Wiesn for the world’s biggest party, The Southport Rotary and Matthew’s Ministries have teamed up with Check 6 Brewery to present their first Beer, Brats and Backpacks! Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday, September 26th. The event will take place on the grounds of Check 6 Brewery, 5130 Southport-Supply Rd SE in Southport from 6pm-10m. Tickets are $20 (with an additional on-line fee of $3) and can be purchased online at: southportrotarycluboktoberfest.myevent.com or through their Facebook page: Southport Rotary Club Oktoberfest. They are offering a VIP option for an additional $10, which includes early entry (5pm-6pm), tour of the brewery and a sampling of beers. Both ticket prices include a mug and first fill up for free.

Check 6 Brewery has brewed a special Oktoberfest beer for the event, as well as all their other offerings. German Polka music will be provided by The Group Du Jour.

And what Oktoberfest would be complete without Bratwurst!

We asked Noah Goldman of Check 6 Brewery for more information about Oktoberfest and this is what he had to say Today’s authentic Oktoberfest bier is only brewed by breweries within the city limits of Munich. And they are the only ones allowed to participate in the annual Munich Oktoberfest.

All other beers brewed to emulate that style must be Labeled Oktoberfest-Style. In spite of its name, Oktoberfest Bier is an outgrowth of a traditional spring brew called Marzens (German for March, which was put in caves or cellars for summer consumption.) The left-over bier had to be consumed quickly to empty the barrels and allow the brewers to brew fresh beers made with newly harvested grains and hops that were now available. Over time the March beer turned into an October beer, Therefore Oktoberfest biers are always well aged lagers.

Our Oktoberfest bier is aged for 8 weeks and is made with rich Pilsner, Vienna and Munich malts. With its amber color, it’s very lightly hopped with traditional German Noble Hops and features a medium bodied rich malty

CURRENTS taste, with no cloying sweetness. It has an alcohol content of 5.3% A.B.V. making it extremely drinkable. Just exactly the way King Ludwig intended it to be.

The date of this style’s great transformation was October 12, 1810. On that day, crown Prince Ludwig, who later became King Ludwig I, married Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghousen. To allow the commoners to partake in the ceremonies, the couple organized a giant wedding party on some grazing land outside the Munich city gates. Around 40,000 happy Bavarians showed up. Almost every year since, that party is repeated in the same place. Today around 6 million attend the event and consume 3 million liters of the very special beer.

By the way, that meadow, was given its current name of Theresein weisse (Theresa’s meadow). To honor the Crown Princess. Now known in the local vernacular as just, the “Wies’n”.

And is still the site of the world’s largest “Volkfest”.

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it does! 100 percent of the proceeds from this event to go Matthew’s Ministries, a local charity which began in August 2010 when a teacher submit-

ted a prayer request to a local Moms In Touch group. The prayer simply stated, “Please pray for a child in my class that does not have food at home to eat”.

Kristie Disbrow, a local mom, went back to the teacher and asked if her family could donate food to help this child. She quickly learned that many children in the school did not have food at home. Kristie emailed friends, told them about this need and set a collection bin on her porch.

Many of them donated food to this cause and teachers, social workers and guidance counselors distributed food to hun-

gry children and their families. More and more schools heard about this program and in December 2010, Matthew’s Ministry became a 501(3)(c) non-profit agency.

“The Southport Rotary Club supports health and kids in our community,” explains Oktoberfest Chairman, Jonathan Richmond. “We wanted to come up with a fun, fundraiser!” Jonathan came up with the Oktoberfest idea and Kristie came up with the mission. The “Adopt a Backpack” mission through Matthew’s Ministry provides weekend food for children in Brunswick County who do not have adequate

food at home. Over 500 backpacks are needed to start the program. Backpacks go home filled with food on Fridays and are returned on Monday to be filled again.

“We’ve adopted Southport Elementary.

One VIP ticket to the Oktoberfest will provide 4 weekends of food for one child!”

It seems like a no brainer to me! Have a great time and support a local cause directly affecting the children in our community!

If you can’t make it to the Oktoberfest, here are some ways to help the “Adopt a Backpack” mission: 1. Donate a new or gently used backpack 2. Purchase a backpack and fill it with: One box of cereal One jar of peanut butter and jelly (plastic only) One box of mac & cheese One box of pasta One can of pasta sauce One can of tuna, chicken or Vienna sausage One can of soup One pack of ramen noodles

3. Make a donation of $25 (to cover one backpack and first week of food). Checks should be made to Matthew’s Ministry.

All backpacks (filled or empty) and donations can be turned in to the “little red wagon” at the law office of Stiller and Disbrow (801 N Howe St). Backpacks can be any size or color and will be used at elementary, middle and high schools in Brunswick County. ave you stumbled upon The Malpass Brothers? They’re a pair of 20-something brothers from North Carolina named Taylor and Chris Malpass that cook up some classic country music inspired by music’s greatest legends such as Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Porter Wagoner, Kitty Wells, Ernest Tubb and Merle Haggard.

Christopher explained their style by saying, “My brother Taylor and I do the type of music we do because this music speaks to us, and speaks to the souls of its listeners. For us, traditional country music is the real deal. Every song portrays life’s joys, heartaches, problems and happiness. It comes from the heart, and has depth and truth. Nothing is sugar coated.”

As young boys, Taylor and Chris were utterly consumed by country music and they couldn’t get enough of their granddad’s extensive record collection. They played his records often while nurturing a lifelong admiration and teaching themselves along the way. Chris earned his first talent show trophy at the age of 7 and Taylor mastered the mandolin by the time he was 10 years old.

Today, the throwback pair is uplifting and promoting the classic country artists they pay homage to while creating their own noteworthy music and making an undeniable mark on the scene. Their style is smooth, skillful, soulful and infectious. Throw in a bit of humor, big hair and an Elvis twitch or two, add a couple old-time traditional gospel songs, a few classic country songs and a love ballad or two, count on a bit of sibling ribbing and you’re guaranteed to want to hear more.

“Our goal, really, is to see this music be revived, to help ensure it doesn’t fade away. It is so encouraging to have young people come to our shows with a new interest in our old music. Being able to introduce what we love to another generation feels like a great accomplishment for us. We want this music to be around for our children’s children” Christopher says.

The duo considers themselves blessed and lucky to have toured with the legendary Merle Haggard for six years and release an album under his label, Hag Records. They have shared the stage with greats such as Don Helms, the steel guitarist for Hank Williams, Ray Price, Willie Nelson, Doc Watson, Rhonda Vincent and Mary Stuart. And the title cut video from their “Memory That Bad” album hit the

A: Land Rover has been in business since 1948. The original vehicles were called “The farmers friend”. They were four wheel drives and built for the English countryside.

The vehicles today are still built in the original factory in Solihull England. Today we have a full spectrum of models, which are, either all wheel, or four wheel drives.

Q: What sets Cape Fear Land Rover vehicles apart from others?

A: Land Rover makes the finest luxury sport utilities in the world. The Queen and all of the Royal family drive Land Rovers. Our vehicles range in price from $37,000, all the way to the high hundreds. One of the greatest attributes of our vehicles is safety. Land Rover has been industry leading through the years, in new developments related to safety.

Q: Are there any new models coming out in 2016? If so, please tell us about them.

A: We have some exciting products which have just come out, or are due, in the very

near future. The Discovery Sport is the newest model. It is a turbocharged four cylinder, all-wheel drive. Starting MSRP is $37,000, and is available with a third row seat. New for 2016, is our first diesel engine, available for the United States. It will be available in our Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover models initially.

Q: What is your personal favorite model?

A: Personally, my favorite model is the Defender. Defenders were brought to the US, in the 90’s. They have not been available in the states since then, but have continually been available in Europe and the rest of the world. It is a very Spartan, extremely capable four wheel drive.

Q: We love your mascot, Ruffin the dog. Tell us how Ruffin came to be part of the family. What breed and how old is he?

A: I am glad you got to meet Ruffin. Ruffin is an 11 year old chocolate lab. He belongs to our Master Sales Guide Matt Meakin.

A: The Parts and Service departments are the best I have ever worked with. I have been in the automotive business since the early 80’s, and am blessed with the staff we have. We recently hired a technician from the Raleigh area who also has Jaguar experience. We are in talks to acquire the Jaguar brand, and soon will be remodeling our building to get ready.

SCALES King for a Day

The life of a Tournament Fisherman BY: ALAN BEASLEY

H

ere is what fishing teams go through to get ready for a Tournament like the US Open King Mackerel Tournament coming up on October 1st – 3rd at the Southport Marina.

Let’s pretend we are fishing in a tournament. Making sure everything about your boat is in ship shape as well as your equipment is an important task. Out on the ocean or in the middle of a tournament is not the time to realize that your fishing line has dry rot, your reel is stuck from corrosion or that you have forgotten the treble hooks or gaff. So be sure to make a checklist of everything you need, a week ahead of time and have all your ducks in a row!

Don’t take a chance on anything especially if you have hundreds or even hundreds of thousands on the line in a tournament.

People have made mistakes costing them THOUSANDS of dollars in lost winnings!

Don’t be that guy or girl. Just be over prepared! Be sure to get your fishing license!

First we need to decide where to go to catch live bait. Menhaden, (AKA Pogies) are a staple for live bait fishing so we have to have those. Where to find that live bait is always a tough question.

If you do a little research on the beach and pay attention you’ll see that those big brown pelicans are showing you the way.

They are always on the hunt for the Pogey and will give strong indication as to where they are, just look for them diving into the water! And if all else fails, ask the local tackle shops where the Pogey’s are.

They can usually tell you. The other option

that works is to use frozen bait. Several tournaments have been won using frozen Cigar Minnows, Ballyhoo or Spanish Sardines. However one of my favorite King baits is the good ole live Bluefish. A live Bluefish is King Mackerel candy, they really LOVE them! So be sure and get a few of those. Now most pro teams pre-fish several days before a tournament so they know where the bait is located, they test out local reefs and ledges and get a general idea of where the Kings are. They do move around and are very fast. They can be in the Cape Fear River channel tomorrow and down around Lock Wood Folly the next day. They will run with the bait. One of my favorite things to do is find a big school of Pogey’s, locate my boat about 100 Yards away from that school, between it and an offshore structure, reef or even a pier. Those Kings will move in and out, up and down from location to location wherever there are schools of bait. That’s where you’ll get a bite most of the time.

Enough about Bait, Let’s fish!

Next we decide between the slow troll or the anchoring up method. Many people take the slow troll approach so they can cover more area. They will cut up chunks of dead pogey and even grind them into a nasty paste that gets tossed over the side to create a chum slick on the surface.

That’s like making a phone call that says “Dinner time”! The Kings will follow that slick right to your boat and hopefully strike one of your beautifully displayed live baits.

It works great! The other option is to anchor your boat and do the same chumming method. However with this method you’ll use a balloon as a float for your Pogey. Using a kite is also fun if the wind is not blowing too hard. A kite lets you position it away and overhead with a release clip attached to the kite line. The rod-nreel line goes through the release clip and that allows you to position the Pogey just a little out of the water so he is making a lot of noise and splashing around on the surface. That is so cool to do because most of the time when the King hits that bait he is coming up fast and will fly up out of the water 4-6 feet as it attacks the bait. It’s a show worth seeing when that happens.

To finish up quickly since I’m running out of space, fight the King with ease and be smooth about how you reel in the fish. If he runs just hold the line tight. When he stops pull back on the rod but not too far and never point your rod tip at the fish.

Always keep some bend in the rod tip to maintain a tight line on the fish. Never let the line go slack that is a good way to lose the fish. Keep steady pressure on, don’t adjust the drag and just work the fish up along side of the boat. Your partner should be ready with the Gaff and using a smooth lifting motion as you go for the fish is best.

Never try to yank or strike at the fish with the Gaff. Once you get the fish on your boat, get those hooks out, put him in a fish bag of ice water to keep it hydrated and get your lines back in the water as fast as possible, there is probably another King out there looking for his pal and you’ll probably catch him to.

There will be live entertainment from local bands as well as food and you will see some of the best of the best in King Mackerel Tournament Fishing Teams. There will be lots of big King Mackerel weighed in and you see someone win “Big Money” as a result of their determination, skill, preparedness, and attitude and of course luck. Last year the Reel Blessed Fishing Team – won $66.715 Here are some of the details on this exciting tournament.

he beaches of our community have long been a place of respite and rejuvenation for many generations of travelers. This month, a special group will return for the fifth year to our area.

Little Pink Houses of Hope is an organization that provides week long vacations for breast cancer patients and their families. Eleven families (about 60 people) will be coming to Oak Island from September 1319th, 2015.

Jeanine Patten-Coble, herself a breast cancer survivor, started this organization. Diagnosed in June, 2009 on her way to a family vacation, she developed the idea leading to the mission statement of the organization to “promote breast cancer recovery by offering opportunities for survivors to reconnect and celebrate life�. She continues the efforts with what her co-worker calls a heart for serving.

This tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 organization realizes that a cancer diagnosis impacts both the person and their family. The beach retreat, currently offered in NC, SC, AL, DE, FL and CA, helps families who live under the same roof to relax, reconnect and rejuvenate during their journey.

Participants must currently be undergoing some type of treatment or have recently completed treatment. While not an opportunity for an extended family reunion, the immediate family benefits while only sharing the financial burden of the travel. The majority of funding comes from private donations although some grants have been received in the past.

Oak Island Accommodations has been instrumental, in our area, by contacting home owners who are willing to donate their homes for families. In addition, they provide the linens and cleaning services to both the families and volunteers who come to assist the program.

Amy Matthews, one of two employees of this organization, shared very positive

comments related to the support of local businesses, churches and organizations in our area over the past 5 years. The retreat includes morning local activities arranged to the desires of the participants but based on local community donations. These may include paddle boarding, golf, jewelry making, kayaking, a trip to Fort Fisher Aquarium etc. Lunch is typically a donated meal provided by one of our local restaurants or church group.

Each house is stocked with breakfast foods and drinks.

Lunches and dinners are held as a common meal but you are welcome to decline participation to be with your family unit.

Matthews notes that the final night of the retreat is a very special and structured evening activity to allow sharing amongst the group as well as closure to the event.

As this program continues to grow, so does the need for assistance. Matthews eagerly yearns for a community to develop a committee in each area to plan and run the respective retreats. Although the Little Pink Houses of Hope Family Center in Alamance County holds 2 fundraisers each year, she feels it would be beneficial for our area to also host our own fundraiser.

If you are interested in becoming involved, there are many opportunities on all levels.

f you travel east on Nash street, just past the post office on the left you will see it! The Candy Store House. Its retro shape and soft pink hue draw you in, like a month to a flame. It is one of those houses that make you wonder about its past and present.

Built in 1912, it was a general store that sold candy, which is where it got its name.

Through the years, different businesses have come and gone including: George Autry’s Shoe Repair, a watch repair shop and a laundromat. It was a Shell Museum before current owners, Susan and John Lambeth purchased it in 2011. John and Susan happened

upon the house, while they were looking at the house across the street for sale.

John and Susan live full time in Raleigh, but have been vacationing for years on Oak Island, where they own a beach vacation rental property named, BeachyPeachyKeen. Oak Island Accommodations has been managing that rental property

“We finally went to Southport to see what everyone was talking about. Since we lived 11 years in Raleigh’s Historic Oakwood we fell in love with the historic homes in Southport.” explains Susan.

When John and Susan purchased the Candy Store House in 2011, the insurance value of the property was $1! “We bought it for $65,000 put about $60,000 plus our sweat equity of demo, painting inside and out and keen online shopping for a total of $125,000.” says Susan. Currently, Zillow estimates its worth at $282,000. Talk about a great investment!

And since John and Susan already owned a rental property, creating another rental property was an obvious choice.

And with the help of Oak Island Accommodation managing the short term renters, living in Raleigh has not been an issue.

John works as a Photographer/Videographer for the NC Farm Bureau Federation and Susan is Marketing Director for Carolinas IT. Combined their skills created a wonderful documentary of their journey from start to finish creating what is now the

Today I begin this blogsite of “adventures in historic preservation!” As I build this site for a community of those who cherish historic properties I ask for your help. BLOG #2 SPRING 2010

A downtown where old buildings now have restaurants and shops with unusual things for visitors to buy. A waterfront that looks out on the ocean, a lighthouse and an island with ritzy homes. And all these people sitting on the park benches at the waterfront. I really like this town!”

HOMESTYLE covered Southport, NC. I felt a pull to all things Southport so this became the first of many, many trips to stroll the streets of Southport. And that strolling eventually lead to finding a little hidden historic gem.

BLOG #3: SUMMER 2010

I’m interested in a little home for sale in a great location of Southport. It’s definitely old and somewhat updated with new windows and finished wood floors but a weird floor plan and to make it a nice place I’d be redoing what was redone. And that would be a waste of money. (This is a home across the street that we did not buy.)

BLOG #4: SUSAN

Fall 2010 – Poor Little Property! Well the house I looked at - but didn’t love was sold. Ok, not a problem. And in a way I’m relieved. But across the street I notice a weird little “structure.” Is this a house?

Vacant and not impressive, grayish white, boarded up, a large sign across the top with hand painted “Shell Museum.” Chain link fence around it. Pale blue vinyl siding on three sides and pressed metal “brick patterned” metal sheets on the front. Definitely no charm. And what is this weirdly shaped thing anyway?

Back home in Raleigh I spend evenings “shopping” at realtor.com. Always thinking “someday we’ll retire in Southport in a little house that could be a combination shop to sell John’s photos and home for us.” I’ll just keep learning about Southport, the best locations, what lots cost and what houses – even the run down old ones – are going for.

BLOG #5: DEC. 2010

Revelation! It’s a store! So every Christmas we drive through Historic Oakwood in downtown Raleigh near the Governor’s Mansion. We lived for 11 years in Oakwood, doing our own “interpretive restoration” on a wonderful 1897 home. (More on that in a future blog.) So now, as I drive down the street and pass by a restored place that was once a grocery store I realize the “zig zag top” design is the same design as the little building in Southport!

It’s a some kind of a store! Ok, I understand why this place looks different than most homes. I need to look at it again!

BLOG #6: JAN 2011

One of those occasional well-abovenormal days in North Carolina. John and I drive around Southport, including a drive past what I now call “the grocery store house.” Doors and windows are boarded up or covered with plastic. “Let’s find out more from the realtor.”

It was a little shocking. A dark interior with heavy blue drapes separating part of the large front room. A tiny tiny kitch-

en with antique sink, old electric stove and one counter and cabinet. A bathroom with toilet, tiny sink and nasty metal shower. The 30 gallon hot water heater is at least decent. Another large room and two small bedrooms. A window AC unit, sliding glass doors of 1970’s quality and a variety of floorings – carpet in different colors, brittle vinyl flooring and old linoleum tiles – but underneath wood turned dark with glue but we can see it’s in good shape. So what was good? Ten foot high ceilings, the wood floors, large grocery store windows, the 1880 six panel doors and hardware, the hot water heater and the unique exterior design. John wasn’t too impressed. But I was.

BLOG #7: FEB. 2011

So I’m drawn to this property. It’s an old building that shouldn’t be torn down. Is it protected from the wrecking ball? I started searching online for “Victorian grocery stores” and similar words. Not much online.

But I end up at the website for the NC State Historic Preservation Office. I called, asking if the store’s on the historic properties list. After a bit of research they call me back. Yes! It’s listed of the National Register of Historic Properties and is a “certified historic structure!” What’s more, their website says if restored according to national guidelines and used as an income producing property we can get a 20% state tax credit and a 20% federal one. 40% credit of our restoration expenses! This certified historic structure could be pretty affordable!

BLOG #8: RESEARCH TO MAKE AN OFFER ON A HISTORIC PROPERTY

March 2011 – Don’t we love google?

With its help I’m able to research info on the property we’re interested in and neighbor’s properties. Lot sizes, tax appraisals, past “for sale” listings, past “sold” amounts, how much market values unfortunately seem to be dropping … and more. With this info I feel the listing price that was $150,000 a year ago and is now $125,000 is still too high. A spreadsheet, calculations, comparisons, etc – and we make an offer of $50,000. Pretty quickly we got a response that they would come to $85,000. So we know they’re willing to negotiate and play ball.

BLOG #9: MARCH 2011

$85,000 was the counter offer from the heir of the estate. John and I were pleased that she would consider working with us. We countered at $60,000 which was what we had in mind and the amount we thought fair after doing our research. A few days went by and to prepare for the idea that we might not come to an agreement I kept my mind busy with work, redoing the bedroom, family birthdays, etc.. Then I got a call from our realtor who said “She accepted your offer!” I couldn’t believe it! No further negotiating and exactly the price we had in mind! “Oh happy day!” I’m going to have a ball saving this property!

We reviewed and signed the paperwork

and mailed the earnest money. Now we’re in our NC-required two weeks due diligence period and we have a closing scheduled shortly thereafter.

Then a few days later - our realtor called and told us we had a problem.

The sister (heir to the estate) who signed the contract and is the executor of the estate has a sister who didn’t agree to the price and could stop the purchase by not signing the deed. Things were on hold while this sister’s attorney talked with the executor’s attorney. It might be a while for these ladies to come to an agreement. Needless to say we were disappointed.

BLOG #10: OUR OFFER IS ACCEPTED ... AGAIN!

So I spent a few weeks thinking we’d never get the historic grocery store since the sisters couldn’t agree to sell and it had gone to their attorneys to settle. I put my mind on other things and tried to not be disappointed. John and I talked about it and made one final offer for $65,000.

Amazingly enough the sisters must have come to an agreement because they took it! We were under contract for our little gem of a property to restore the exterior historic and renovate the interior “green.”

Under North Carolina law we had two weeks for due diligence to inspect, get finances together and back out for any reason. Let the work begin!

HOMESTYLE I requested emailed info from the NC Historic Preservation Office and boy did I receive it! Actually it’s what everyone receives – 18 detailed documents covering the NC process and the US Dept. of the Interior (National Park Service) process. Printed out the papers were about an inch thick!

A week later, after many nights of reading, I set up an appointment with the NCHPO in downtown Raleigh with pictures of this place we want to buy, drawings of the existing structure and drawings of what we might do. The two men I met with –

BLOG #11: DUE DILIGENCE AND DECENT REPORTS

originally posted March 2011 – NC law gives us two weeks to thoroughly check the property, get finances together … and have second thoughts! During that time we can walk away from purchasing the property.

We had a pest inspection, a home inspection, talked with a builder and reviewed our budget.

The pest inspection showed no evidence of active infestation but a little damage in the past and no treatment having been done recently. That was a decent report.

Our realtor referred a builder to us who met us at the house. We were impressed with this very nice man and hoped to talk further. I asked him for an estimate on gutting and redoing the interior. He said “Depending on your plans and finishes I’d say thirty to forty thousand. Another decent report.

As for the home inspection – it turned out pretty well. A support beam needs to be reinforced and a pyling needs work.

Windows need a good bit of patching up, evidence of a squirrel chewing wood in the back roof and a few other minor notes. What has to be redone or installed for the first time however will be electric, plumbing, HVAC, an entire new kitchen and 1 1/2 bathrooms.

Essentially we’ll have a clean slate in which to craft our vacation rental home.

The inspector also called a neighbor, Jim Russ, who knew this property and came to see it! When Jim attended Southport High School in the 40’s the high school is where the post office is now. Beside it was our little store before it was moved to its present location. He said he remembered going in after school and buying candy from the big wood and glass cabinets in the center of the store. So instead of the GroceryStoreHouse it’s now the CandyStoreHouse!

BLOG #12: TAX CREDITS ON HISTORIC HOME RENOVATIONS!

I contacted the NC Historic Preservation Office in Raleigh that manages the program for receiving tax credits for a property on the National Register of Historic Properties. The process is three steps: 1.

Tim, who’s the tax expert, explained that since we’ve decided to use it as a shortterm vacation rental property, it would be a NC income-producing property and we can get back tax credits of 40% of our improvement costs. That includes expenses like materials, tradespeople, contractor, drawings and fees but not furnishings, appliances, landscaping and additions. Time to jump in on the application.

Jeff and Tim – were so nice and, although they do this all the time, they seemed to share in my excitement. Jeff jumped right in looking closely at my pictures and using words I’ve not used before – clerestory windows, parapet, and some building terms. He was excited that underneath the vinyl siding we have vertically corru-

April 22, 2011 – Our daughter, Kelsey’s birthday – that must be a lucky thing! A bonus was that our son, Kyler, and girlfriend, Stephanie, came up from Myrtle Beach, to our Oak Island house and could attend the closing with us. Since this was a cash deal there was very little paperwork compared to buying a property with a traditional mortgage. A few signatures, chit chat about our plans for the property and we were handed the (one and only) padlock key!

The four of us went to the house to “feel the ownership!” Since it was about 90 degrees I had bought flavored water and we “raised a paper cup glass” to the new place! We went inside and did a little demolition to see what we had. Pulled back some carpet to see the hardwood floors, took down plastic covering windows and Kyler pushed over some room partition/ walls – nothing historic!

We pulled off some 1950’s sheetrock to see what was underneath. Surprise! Wood!

Not just framing as I thought but horizontal 3” or so boards. Probably pine but I’m not sure. I was so excited that I think the rest of the family was a little taken aback! Then as we removed more and more sheetrock we found what I later found out are called “ghost markings!” You see at some point a merchant repainted the walls but only painted around the tables and counters against the wall, leaving the green ”ghost markings” of the previous paint job. How cool is that? A picture from the past!

How to use the property we just purchased!

So before I could begin planning the interior I had to work backwards from the end goal on how this little 920 square foot property will be used. Is this a vacation home that we’ll go to every few weekends or for a week here and there? Is it a small home we want to rent out on an annual basis? Is it, like our Oak Island beach house, available for week long rentals in the summer and we use it the rest of the year? Would there be an advantage to

being wheelchair accessible? How about pet-friendly? Or would it be a seasonal rental for “snowbirds” who go south in the winter for a mild climate?

I asked realtors and vacation rental companies what the rental market is like in Southport. I thought about how to manage rentals, living 2 1/2 hours away.

I thought about how long we’ll keep this property. I estimated the minimum to bring in each year to cover expenses and the goal of what we’d like to make in rentals. And also a big guess on what might happen in home values. Who knows?!

Whatever “rental type” was selected, meant different plans, building costs, marketing and risks. Once selected we should actually write down (like a business plan) a description of the type of person(s) who will rent, the rental calendar, the furnishings (or lack of), the decor, the quality/price of interior finishes and how to attract the renter(s).

BLOG #14: THE FUN OF DESIGNING!

Originally posted SEPTEMBER, 2011 – Ok so I have to admit I spent hours upon hours designing the interior. And it was/ is SO much fun. If I can’t fall asleep I lay there and plan in my head! Using a home version of Visio makes it very easy too. As does googling things like “recommended distance sofa to 42 inch tv”. And sharing the plans with friend like Lynda C. and Maria B. gave me some good feedback.

BLOG #15: CHRISTMAS DAY!

Dec. 25, 2011 – A great Christmas here in Raleigh. Time to think about things other than a renovation. And the mental break was nice!

I’m still catching up this blog to current happenings so I’ll address happenings more quickly. First topic: side doors.

Early October - our application submitted to NC State Historic Preservation and

to US Dept of Parks and Recreation (who supervises historic preservation) was ... approved with very few changes. Fantastic!

Big item was approval on side doors where a 70’s style sliding glass door needs to be replaced. Their recommendation was hard-to-understand one stating to replace it with “a half glass door with window beside it.” Hmmm. Don’t think I can live with that! Let’s ask again.

(And remember I’m doing this to get a total of 40% of my costs credit on taxes from Fed and NC!)

I searched online for images of old store doors and talked with several door manufacturers about custom doors. When I sent in the image of what I would have created they thought I was going to buy the old door. They said not to add an old door.

Hmm - misunderstood. So then I realized they might accept new doors that have a historic style. Wonderful! I found at Lowe’s online some great patio doors which you can see at the url below. My Christmas present from “the approvers” is that NC folks have approved and they have recommended to the Federal folks that they approve. Fingers crossed! Happy holidays, readers!

But with the help of gravity some huge hunks fell with a thud!

By the second day I could only work a few hours until my sore right arm just couldn’t do any more.

The next trip down my friend Lynda helped out and on a few future trip hubby John and I completed the job. Our work also included removing old appliances, a metal shower stall, a toilet and more.

Looking online at the typical cost of demolition I think we saved about $5000. Worth the sore arms and dust all over us!

BLOG #17: ENTER BRAD THE MASTER CARPENTER!

Dec. 29, 2011 - In October we began demolition. I went down for a weekend by myself armed with protective gear of gloves, mask and goggles and demo gear of hammers, screw drivers and crowbars.

With no one to show me what to do I just jumped in and tried a variety of ways to get the sheetrock off the walls. There were different thicknesses and materials making up sheetrock in the different rooms. Some easy to get off, some made me feel like a sculptor. The ten foot ceiling was a bear

In mid-October the demolition was done and we’d had enough of sheetrock!

Figuring we’d saved about 5K with the DIY demo we were happy to let someone else do the cleanup and put it into a dumpster. But who would do that?

From across the street, a neighbor came over to introduce himself. He’s a carpenter - or Master Carpenter I should say. Brad is his name. He told us he does all kinds of construction work on Bald

Head Island and, if we would hire him for various projects, he’d give us the “family, friends and neighbors” discount. And he told us how he could advise us if we chose to be the general contractor on the project. Most interesting he thinks we’d save about 40%. Hmmmm. I love

savings and don’t want to overextend on the project.

John and I decided to give him a try with an urgent project - replacing the broken and missing clerestory windows, currently covered by a “Shell Museum” sign. We’ll see how he does.

BLOG #18: GREAT CLERESTORY! WINDOW!

What a difference some new windows can make!

John and I arrived on a Saturday to see our beautifully restored clerestory windows. Brad did a great job! Now with no Shell Museum sign covering them up, with repaired wood trim and broken windows replaced we have more light entering the front great room. Wonderful!

Since the weather was warmer than usual we took advantage of it and painted the front and most obvious left side of the house a pale, muted pink. Naturally I took the pink that I thought was right and, since it wasn’t, kept adding and adding brown paint. Finally I got the pale muted pink I wanted. And since we didn’t have water to wash the green mildew off the sides, we used containers of cleaner wipes which Brad kept referring to as Baby Wipes! And we went through hundreds of them!

BLOG #19: DINNER AND DECISIONS

So master carpenter Brad, John and I went to a nearby restaurant, the Boathouse, for dinner and to talk renovation. I had my plans I had done with Microsoft Visio to review. Each area brought up questions and we were impressed that Brad can handle so much. The old kitchen sink? He can refinish. Install new six foot wide doors? He can install. Foundation repair? He did a lot of this over the years. Take down the chimney?

Install a window where there is none? Tile?

Blown in insulation? Yep, he can handle! And as a bonus Brad insists we can be our own general contractor and save about 40% on the total cost! So with his local project management, resources and skills I strongly considered finding out more about being the general contractor.

BLOG #20: BEING A CONTRACTOR IN NC

I thought back about an adult ed class I took ages ago. It was on being a res-

idential contractor. Only female in the class. I bought the engineer’s or architect’s three-sided ruler for reading plans. But when it came to doing things like determining how much concrete is needed for the rebar in the footings, I dropped out.

So now I’m ready to look at this again. I googled for info on being a contractor in NC but only found manuals to purchase.

Best thing is to go to the decision maker or the building inspections department for Southport. Phone number and some info is online. I called and Wayne, the inspector, was very helpful. Since I work with computer network engineers I know to keep conversations brief and to-the-point and I think he appreciated that. Wayne sent me a few documents and the website had some.

I reviewed, realized because we own the house I could do this. No insurance or expense at this point. I faxed it in and about a week later got a call that my Building Permit was ready to pick up. How cool!

site, one of Brad’s helpers who had just come up from under the house called to me “Miss Susan – did you know you have a bath tub under the house?” “No, I said.

Bring it up!” Well it took four strong men to pull it up and it WAS a claw foot tub. We decided when years ago it fell thru the rotten wood floor it was just easier to refloor and add a new one! ($625 to refinish and a new claw foot cradle was purchase online since the feet were missing. A year later when digging to plant a hydrangea we discover one of the original feet!)

BLOG #21: DIY CANVAS

One statement piece I wanted was a striped awning to be mounted above the store windows. So “vintage store!” I shopped online and visited a local awning manufacturer. Cost at a minimum would be $1200 for this 16’ - 17’ wide awning. So, as a card carrying DIYer I googled for directions on how to make one and customized plans. John built four mounts from pressure treated wood and I found the right material at Joanne’s Fabrics. The material had to be outdoor canvas, wide stripes

and I wanted chocolate brown and white or tan. Believe it or not the remnant section had just enough brown and tan widestriped material, remnant cost and on sale 40% off that! I think it was $4 a yard! Total cost for my DIY awning - about $50!

The tricky parts were sewing together the sections so the stripes lined up as they should. Also challenging was making a cardboard template of just the right scallops for the edge. But now, how do I keep it from raveling? Well while waiting for some trim to “go on sale” (that’s me!)

I thought the trim would be hard to bend to the curves of the scallops. There’s got to be a Plan B. After thinking, I decided on acrylic green paint, similar to the door color, mixed with fabric paint additive. So I sketched on a 1” border and John and I painted two coats of the paint.

After the three gooseneck lights are placed in the top part of the storefront (parapet) we’ll be able to mount the awning. Watch for the pics! (Due to hurricanes I decided to use the material in the front windows, still a salute to the “old store awnings.”

BLOG #22: RESTORE - A GREAT CAUSE AND GREAT FINDS!

I’ve always been one to take something and make it better or use it in a different way. Plus I’m cheap! So I discovered the Habitat for Humanity stores called ReStore. Great name for “restoring!” People and companies donate old furniture, tile, lights, and cabinets galore - all kinds of stuff! And stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot take their displayed items there. Great prices and the profits go to help the Habitat for Humanity cause, providing housing for those who can’t afford it.

Anyway, over the last few months I’ve visited the stores in Cary, NC and Raleigh, NC many times. I’ve found industrial lights that were brand new (but just didn’t sell) for $20 each. Bought all 7 that they had and they’re now in the parapet (top outside), on both sides of the fireplace/TV and will be in the bathroom as sconces.

The ones outside I left as natural silver metal but inside have painted the sconces beside the fireplace/TV with Martha Stewart textured black metallic paint. They

look like wrought iron! The sconces in the master bath are painted with metallic teal that I mixed up. I also bought a brand new contemporary light fixture ($85 at Lowe’s) for $20. Bought a medallion and painted to match giving the old and new look.

I’ve also gotten doors, a coffee table I’ll paint, door knobs, etc... So check out the ReStore. Such fun!

BLOG #23: THREE WEEKS TO GO!

We’re in the home stretch! Sheetrock was done this past week and only needs a final, very light sanding. Kitchen granite will be installed in a few days, as will the outdoor 120 gallon gas tank. HVAC and electric should finish this week and plumbing too. I’ve got to order one final sink faucet - for the big kitchen sink turned master bath sink - and a few other items. Then the wood floors, finish painting and bring in the furniture.

John and I have saved about $12,000

by doing the interior and exterior painting ourselves. Exterior colors - very pale pink, olive green doors, brown shutters and offwhite trim. Inside basic colors are steel gray, muted green, very pale yellow and touches of black and white. Oh and one pop of color that reminds guests of the outside will be the round oak table with claw feet painted glossy, pale pink. Hope it doesn’t sound - or will be - too wild!

BLOG #24: ALMOST FINISHED!

HVAC is almost done, allowing us to acclimate the wood flooring pieces for a day or two so it can be laid down - hopefully this Memorial Day weekend. (That reminds me I’ve got to get an American flag and holder!) Brad, the Master Carpenter is laying tile bathroom floors so we can purchase toilets and plumbing can be completed. Window framing, tile backsplash, some painting and many odds and ends yet to go. Last weekend John helped build

the new deck which will add another sitting area - and in the future - a nice hot tub!

BLOG #25: FINALLY - A FOCUS ON FURNISHINGS!

Our target date to be finished is this coming Saturday, June 23rd! Toilets were purchased from Lowes.com so the plumber, Don, can finish up and I think the electric and HVAC is finished. We haven’t been down in two weeks so I haven’t seen the shower and bathroom floors tile work so fingers crossed it looks great. Brad, our carpenter, is finishing hanging doors and trim work. Can’t wait to get in there and finish painting, hanging window treatments, moving in furniture and buying furniture locally! And as a bonus they’re filming Safe Haven with Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel in Southport! I understand July 4 they’ll film the parade. Will be fun to see what’s going on.

BLOG #26: JULY 4TH, 2012

a great day to move in the final furnishings and stay at our wonderful, comfortable little place! It’s so much fun to sit on the front steps and hear compliments from people passing by or hearing it mentioned by the tour guides. We have lots of bridal party members, parents, grandparents and honeymooners renting our place through Oak Island Accommodations. We’ve had people get engaged there, honeymoon there and spend anniversaries there. And we have snowbirds from Vermont who travel south to spend the winter in our sweet CandyStoreHouse! It’s been fun and maybe we’ll do it again … in a few years!

f you find yourself thinking, “That guy looks familiar,” there may be a reason. Former “Wicked Tuna” First Mate Scott Ferriero and his wife, Donna, have made Southport their home.

Scott spent three seasons fishing for Bluefin on National Geographic’s popular Wicked Tuna series. “I caught my first Bluefin in the mid-eighties. It’s still hard to describe the whole experience, a combination of pure chaos and adrenaline,” said Scott. After a rotator cuff injury at the end of the third season ended his professional fishing career, Scott began thinking of the future and what he wanted it to be.

That vision included marrying his long time love on New Year’s Eve last year, Donna Swing and finding the perfect seaside town to start their new life together. Donna and Scott first met more than 18 years ago in Myrtle Beach when she was working at the shop she and her mother, Rosa Briggman, owned in what is now known as Barefoot Landing. Scott was working for the House of Blues, which was just opening nearby. A chance meeting turned into a friendship and later romance that eventually brought them to Southport.

“We knew we wanted to be near water. When we visited Southport, we both fell in love with the area. It reminded me of the seaside towns in Massachusetts, particularly my hometown of Beverly, but without the harsh winters,” said Scott. “On our first visit, we stayed at the Brunswick Inn. Walking the streets of Southport, we could just picture ourselves here,” said Donna.

Their hunt for the perfect house was coupled with

Donna’s hunt for the perfect location for opening a new business. If you’ve driven down Howe Street, it’s hard to miss the charming and eclectic Emmy Lu’s. Named for daughter, Emily Rose, Emmy Lu’s is filled with a mix of casual women’s apparel, jewelry, home décor, gift items and more. “When we found this location, it was a sad little place,” said Donna. “With a lot of help from Scott and my mother, we’ve turned it into what I hope people feel is a happy place! One of our customers described it to me as having ‘a treasure in every corner’,” said Donna. Scott even created a whimsical wishing well and fountain at the side where the coins collected are all donated to SOAR (Southport/Oak Island Animal Rescue). “Just looking at it brings a smile to my face,” It means so much to me that Scott built it and all those coins tossed in by visitors while making wishes will help SOAR.” Finding the perfect house took time and persistence.

“While I was doing an online search for a house, I sent an inquiry to the listing agent, Robert Carroll. He immediately reached out to me and we had a great conversation and arranged to look at some houses in both Oak Island and Southport. I didn’t really know what I wanted but knew I would once I saw it,” said Donna. “The second time we were in town, Robert’s business partner and fellow agent Donna Findlay showed us more homes. Some of them

were close, but just not the one.”

“We probably weren’t the easiest clients because we weren’t sure of what we wanted. And, we had so much going on with planning the wedding and finding a location for the business. Donna and Robert were so patient with us and were just terrific to work with. There was never any pressure,” said Donna. “But once we found the location on Howe Street for Emmy Lu’s, we were able to narrowed down our search to Southport exclusively.”

Weeks later, Donna came across what she felt instinctively was ‘the one’ in The Cottages of Southport. “I instantly phoned Robert and Donna and asked if we could see the house. Donna Findlay rearranged her schedule and met us within the hour. Once I walked in, I just knew.

My mom was with us and said ‘honey, it’s you.’ I knew it too and so did Scott.”

“Donna and Robert even helped us arrange for the financing over the Christmas holidays. We really didn’t know where to go and they stepped in and before we knew it, we were closing in time for me to carry Donna over the threshold,” said Scott. “The Cottages is such a great neighborhood. I can’t believe, being from the Boston area, just how friendly people are here. We can be sitting on our front porch and everyone that passes by waves and says hello. I’ve traveled all over and can honestly say that Southport is the friendliest town I’ve ever been to. And now we live here and life couldn’t be better. It’s no wonder that Southport was voted America’s Happiest Seaside Town.”

6 Old School Cocktails You Should Make Right Now Take A Trip Down Memory Lane With These Vintage Concoctions

Making classic cocktails is one of my favorite things to do. In 1860 Jerry Thomas “The Professor” wrote the first guide to mixing cocktails.

This guide along with many others has molded people like me into dedicated and passionate bartenders. By learning these classic drinks it allows me to tweak these cocktails into something of my own. I create new cocktails daily implementing the techniques and preparation of classic cocktails, while using the right kind of spirits, citrus, water, spices and most of all ice; the right style of ice can “make or break” a cocktail. Whether it is a classic or custom cocktail, I like for that cocktail to be a bridge between the customer and I, it represents who I am.

I have had people from all over the world sit at the bar and knowing the original classic cocktails allows me to create their drink with accuracy.

Through the art of mixology I have learned how to create and balance cocktails using all kinds of foreign ingredients you normally wouldn’t find in the average cocktail. I try to learn the signature cocktails of each state and country, so that whenever you sit at my bar you can get a little taste of home. Every creation still goes back to the classics for me. So whether you order a refreshing gin and tonic, a classic Old Fashioned or one of my custom cocktails, just know the drink was made with care and precision.

Scott’s Tips For Making Great Cocktails:

1. Use fresh ingredients. hen I was growing up, I remember my folks drinking Martini’s, Manhattan’s and Grasshopper’s. 2. Make homemade syrups If I close my eyes I can see my Dad’s bar, which was the cabinet up high, above our stove. and mixers if possible.

I used to sit at the counter doing my homework, as my mom was cooking dinner and watch my dad stroll in from work in his suit and tie and ask my Mom if she wanted a drink.

3. Prepare the cocktail and Depending on her request, he would pull out all the appropriate tools and ingredients and with great care and precision, then add the ice and create their drinks. Maybe it is because of those memories that I knew right where to go for help in showcasing these classic cocktails to perfection; Scott Lindsey, the Bartender/Mixologist, at the Ports of Call Bistro on Howe Street in Southport. OLD FASHIONED

2 oz. rye whiskey 2 dashes Angostura bitters 1 splash water 1 tsp sugar 1 maraschino cherry 1 orange wedge Mix sugar, water, and Angostura bitters in an old-fashioned glass. Drop in a cherry and an orange wedge.

Muddle into a paste using a muddler or the back end of a spoon. Pour in bourbon, fill with ice cubes, and stir.

Garnish with a lemon twist.

GIMLET

3oz. Vodka 1oz. house made lime syrup Mix all ingredients. Add ice and shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

MARTINI

3 oz. Gin 1 TB dry vermouth Mix ingredients in a tall glass. Add ice and stir.

Do not shake. Strain into a chilled martini glass.

Garnish with an olive.

SAZERAC

1/4 oz. Absinthe 3 oz. Rye whiskey 7 dashes Peychaud’s bitters Coat a chilled old-fashioned glass with the absinthe. Mix remaining ingredients in a separate glass. Add ice and stir. Strain into the prepared old-fashioned glass. Garnish with a lemon peel.

MANHATTAN

2 oz. Bourbon 1 oz. Sweet Vermouth 3 dashes of Angostura bitters

Mix all ingredients. Add ice and stir. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry.

SCOTT’S SIGNATURE COCKTAIL

Take a fifth of bourbon and 3 navel orange peels, removing the white parts from the peel; add the peels to the fifth of bourbon.

Seal for 2 months. Then drain and serve.

The United Nations in 1981 established a yearly International Day of Peace, a day devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples. International Day of Peace is now observed around the world each year on 21 September to put aside all that separates us and to experience peace. This year’s theme is “Partnerships for Peace-Dignity for All”.

A 30 minute opening, a Celebration of Peace, will be followed by musical events, food sharing, informational booths, a Peace board for participants to leave peace thoughts and children’s activities of creating peace doves, bookmarks and pinwheels. The film Peace Pilgrim will be shown in the Community Building. Community participation is encouraged. Feel free to bring musical instruments, dancing shoes and visions of peace.
