Spreading the Love The Maggie Awards is a celebration of local businesses in the areas that Southport Magazine supports: Southport, Oak Island, Bald Head Island, Boiling Springs and St. James. Each year we come up with interesting questions and poll our readers.

This year, we doubled the amount of responses we received in 2015. It is our hope that every business will receive a Maggie Award over time! CURRENTS More Than Just History & Tradition The Amuzu is a family affair for the Furpless family BY: LISA P. STITES

T

he historic Amuzu Theatre in Southport has long been a partof the Southport landscape. For the Furpless family, it’s a place where theyare making new memories with the next generations of the family.

Bill maintains a history of the family legacy, back to its beginning in 1912. That was the year Price Furpless and Charles Gause, partners in the operation of a marine supply store on the waterfront in Southport, decided to expand their partnership and open a movie theatre. Silent movies were shown in the original Amuzu Theatre, a building next door to the current location oft he theatre on Howe Street. Back then, admission was just 5 cents for children and 10 cents for adults.

But Price had bigger plans. He wanted to build a larger theatre to be used for movies, theatrical troupes and other amusements. Price was a building contractor and a brick mason, and he did most of the work on his new theatre building himself by 1918. He and his wife Lilly ran the business –he managed the door and crowd, and she sold tickets and peanuts.

A small stage in the new theatre provided space for live entertainment, such as local talent and traveling troupes or magicians. Up until1926, seating was on homemade wooden benches.

In July 1935, the Amuzu Theatre was closed for repairs,though since it was during the Depression, it might have been economic reasons that kept the doors closed. In August of 1938 the Amuzu closed for two days while completely new sound equipment was installed. The Amuzu suffered a serious fire in the projection room on Friday, January 19, 1940 while running the movie Angels Wash Their Faces. The theatre was able to reopen by the end of the next month.

The operation of the Amuzu changed to a father and son team in the early to mid1940s, with the declining health and death of Lilly Furpless. B.L. (Bremen) Furpless worked with his father and took over man-

agement of the theatre in 1945. During World War II, the business was supported by the military presence at Fort Caswell and the fishing industry. But after the war, more emphasis was placed on tourism. In June of 1950, the old wooden seats were replaced with over-stuffed opera chairs.

The Amuzu weathered many challenges in the early 1950s. A drive-in theatre opened at the current location of Lowes Foods and a television station had started up in Wilmington. To compete, the Amuzu opened for its first-ever Sunday on August 15, 1954. In order to get bigger movies, that same week The Glen Miller Story was the first movie ever to play for more than two nights, and plans were being made to begin presenting Cinemascope movies.

And then Hurricane Hazel struck on October 15, 1954, destroying the Southport waterfront, the drive-in theatre, and the complete tourism base on Oak Island. The Amuzu building was unharmed, and B.L. proceeded with his remodeling efforts to present Cinemascope movies, a process that required a much wider screen and projector adaptations.

B.L. was Bill’s father, and though Bill was a small boy at this time, he became very interested in the operation of the theatre.

His father got him a soft drink machine to operate, taught him how to book movies,prepare advertising, and run the theatre while he was still in elementary school.

The Amuzu was on the way to becoming a father and son team again.

“It is the most constant thing in my life,” Bill says of the theatre. “I can’t remember not coming here, even when I was little.”

On November 3, 1959, Price died at age 90. B.L. worked other jobs while continuing to operate the theatre. After several months of illness,B.L. had a massive

stroke on Friday, February 16, 1962 and died five day slater, at age 49.

Bill was just 15 years old. His mother, Cora Lee, had never worked in the theatre before but the mother and son team managed to keep the Amuzu open for 18 more years. There was even a huge 50year celebration for the Amuzu in July, 1962.

In 1964 the lobby was remodeled. All of the concessions were combined in one place in the lobby and a new entrance to the lobby was opened. Another remodeling in 1971 relocated the restrooms and further expanded the size of the lobby. Newly rebuilt seats replaced the former seats and curtains were added to the auditorium walls.

The opening of multi-cinemas in Wilmington, the introduction of cable television, and many more recreational activities being available in the area led to declining attendance in the 1970s. The theatre was only open full time in the summer and on weekends the rest of the year. The last movie shown was the reedited version of Close Encounters of the Third Kind on October 25, 1980.

But also in the 1980s, the theatre took

on a new role in the movie industry, playing host to the first of a few major films. In 1986, the front of the theatre was used in a scene in the movie Crimes of the Heart.

In 1997, the interior and the exterior of the theatre were used in several important scenes in the movie I Know What You Did Last Summer. The Amuzu was called the Southport Community Theatre in the movie. Interior shots included Sarah MichelleGellar’s beauty pageant scenes and the murder of Ryan Phillippe’s character in the balcony. There was another scene of Jennifer Love-Hewitt running into the empty building looking for her friends after the pageant. On June 2, 2000, a black tie affair was held in the Amuzu to premiere Randy Jones’ The Dosher Documentary.

In 2005, the newly-formed Stage II Productions presented its first play, Jekyll and Hyde. During 2005 Stage II presented three other plays in the Amuzu. Between 2006 and 2010, 16 community theatre productions,including Jesus Christ Superstar and Chicago, were presented on the stage of the Amuzu, with Bill’s wife Cathy involved as one of the musicians. In 2008 interior and exterior scenes of the movie The Secret Life of Bees were filmed at the Amuzu. Bill and Cathy, with the assistance of Amy and Matt McCarthy, also started producing original, live musical variety shows in the summer of 2009.

These shows are produced to provide quality entertainment and also raise funds to help restore, remodel, and expand the historic theatre building.

Bill and Cathy formed the Amuzu Theatre, LLC in 2012. Bill is the theatre manager/operator, Cathy is the keyboard player, musical creator, and director of most of the shows. Daughters Laura and Catherine are both active in the shows. Laura has been involved in all of the Amuzu productions as a singer, musician, dancer, or director.

Catherine is now married to Matthew

Smutko and they both help with productions. Their wedding two years ago was even held in the beautiful brick building.

Catherine stays involved as a singer, musician, dancer, or lobby assistant and Matthew helps in the lobby with concessions.

“He’s our popcorn guy and Mr. Fix It,” Catherine said of her husband. “Dad didn’t have any trouble putting him to work.”

The couple’s daughter Lilly has already made her stage debut as well. At just two months old, she played the Baby Jesus in seven performances of the Christmas pageant last year.

“She did great. She didn’t cry one single time,” Catherine said.

Bills’ face lights up when he talks about seeing his wife,daughters and granddaughter on stage. “It’s just a whole shift of things,” he said.

Laura made her first appearance in a production at the Amuzu in 2005, playing bassoon in the pit for Jekyll and Hyde.

She continued playing in the pit and then moved into roles onstage and as director.

She is also a music teacher at Town Creek Elementary School.

“Being on stage here is pretty cool because all the people in the audience could see a different side of me,” she said.

The Furpless family plans to restore the historic building in phases and carry on Price’s dream of presenting an expanded variety of entertainment. Current improvements include replacing the large Amuzu sign on the front of the building, and removing the 11 wooden panels in front and installing new windows, restoring the look of the original building. The new sign will be lighted, and will be hung higher on the building.

The next music show is already in production. Director Traci Bress is leading an ensemble of more than 15 singers and musicians in “Soul by the Sea,” a medley of rhythm and blues classics from the 60s, 70,s and 80s. Cathy is on keyboards and Laura will be singing. The show runs March 11, 12, 17, 18and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and March 13 and 20 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $18 and areavailable at Ricky Evans Gal-

Catherine studied marketing in college, and she shares herfather’s and great-grandfather’s dreams of offering more live entertainment atthe Amuzu.

She said she would love to see the theatre open all the time with all kinds of things going on in the building.

“It’s something to be proud of. I didn’t realize how special it was until I got older and could appreciate it,” she said. “I don’t think they (Bill and Cathy) hear enough how much Laura and I, and Matthew and Lilly,appreciate everything they do. 1

riends. Many of us came to the Southport area from elsewhere, putting us far from family. Friends fill that gap-- sharing holidays, supporting us through troubles, celebrating good times. Even if you happen to be surrounded by family, friends play an important role in all our lives. It is perfectly appropriate, then, that The Sea Notes Choral Society dedicates its 2016 Spring Concert to friendship.

“That’s What Friends Are For,” takes to the stage of Odell Williamson Auditorium on the campus of Brunswick Community College for two performances, Saturday April 2 at 7:30 pm and Sunday April 3 at 3:00 pm. The show is directed by Marie-Pierre Fletcher, a native of Luxembourg transplanted to Holden Beach.

“Marie-Pierre Is an amazing music professional from Luxembourg who recently joined us and sanga beautiful solo during our Christmas concert,” explained Sea Notes President Jim Nelson.

All Sea Notes shows are presented free of charge, a joy made possible by the choral society’s many, well, friends! “We are very fortunate for the generosity of our audiences.

Contributions from “Friends of Sea Notes,” Business Supporters and at-concert collections help support our efforts. We also collect dues from all singers,” said Nelson.

The Sea Notes Choral Society is an all-volunteer ensemble numbering about 130 voices. Those singers, the heart of the Sea Notes, are volunteers from all walks of life. Nelson listed quite a few professions the current line-up draws from, including lawyer, doctor, dentist, teacher, accountant, engineer, business owner, housewife,

minister and National Park ranger. “Perhaps surprisingly, we have relatively few music professionals but a lot of devoted singers,” he said.

Audiences enjoying “That’s What Friends Are For” will be treated to such songs as “Thank You For Being a Friend”, “I’ll Be There For You”, “You’ll Never Walk Alone”,“Together Wherever We Go”, and “Wind Beneath My Wings”.

“There will be many familiar popular songs and we’re sure the audience will be delighted,” said Nelson.

Following this spring’s show, Sea Notes will offer two more concerts in 2016, a Patriotic Concert on June 25-26 and a Christmas Concert on December 3-4, both also a Odell Williamson Auditorium.

The Sea Notes Choral Society not only provides free concerts, but also offers an annual $1000 scholarship to a deserving high school senior. The recipient of the 2015 scholarship, Callie Hicks from West Brunswick High School, is currently at UNC-Chapel Hill pursuing a pre-med degree. The deadline for the 2016 scholarship is April 4 and an application can be found under the Scholarship tab on the Sea Notes website, www.sea-notes.com. 1

Let’s PLAY! offers children aged 5-12 an opportunity to learn about all aspects of theatre in a relaxed and fun environment. Director Elizabeth Flora, who portrayed Dragon in BLT’s production of Shrek the Musical last summer, brings experience both on and off-stage as a member of sketch comedy troupe The Pineapple Shaped Lamps to the workshop and has had a blast working with the children. Flora hopes to offer her next workshop this summer.

The Stagestruck Players, BLT’s youth theatre troupe, is hard at work on Thoroughly Modern Millie, JR, to be presented March 11-13 and 18-20on the Brunswick Little Theatre Main stage, 8068 River Rd, Southport. A

re you over 50 years old? Have you had a screening colonoscopy? Colorectal cancer is a cancer in the large intestine and rectum, which ranks as the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in men and women combined. The American Cancer Society anticipates approximately 144,500 new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed in 2016 alone.

RISK FACTORS:

• Age • Family history of colon cancer or colon polyps • Personal history of colon polyps • Obesity • Sedentary Lifestyle • Diet high in red meat and processed meats OR low in veggies, fruits and whole grains • Heavy alcohol use • Smoking • History of Inflammatory Bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis • Crohn’s disease

SYMPTOMS:

• Blood in stool • A change in bowel habits/stool consistency • Pain with bowel movements • Abdominal pain/cramping,

METHODS OF SCREENING:

• FOBT: (fecal occult blood test) and FIT (fecal immunochemical test). This simple method involves stool sampling often done at home for the presence of blood. It often detects noncancerous bleeding which can occur with hemorrhoids.

By far, the most common recommended screening procedure is the colonoscopy.

Typically, any screening method, except the stool sampling techniques, requires a colon prep or cleansing. PREP is the dreaded four-letter word of the procedure.

Although preps often vary by physician choice, they all involve some period (typically one to two days) of stopping all solid food and using laxatives to clean out the colon. This large tube of intestine must be clean to allow the physician to see the entire length in search of polyps or growths.

The exam also involves a period of 6-8 hours immediately prior to the test where no fluids should be consumed due to the sedation that is given for the exam. I am often asked why you can’t just have a CT Scan. While this is an option, you still have to do the prep AND YOU WILL HAVE TO DO THE PREP AGAIN if anything is seen that is suspicious. Why not just get your colonoscopy in the first place? A typical

exam lasts 20-30 minutes with a recovery period to wake from the sedation of 20-30 minutes. If Polyps or areas of concern are seen, tissue samples are taken and sent for evaluation.

Legally, you cannot drive for 24 hours if you have been given sedative drugs so you will need to bring someone to drive you home. In addition, air or CO2 is pumped into the colon to allow it to distend so that all walls are visible. Remaining air must be expelled but often is trapped initially after the exam, which could cause cramping in your abdomen. Typically,it takes 1-2 days for your normal bowel pattern to resume.
