LEAMINGTON – Hydro One and the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) have teamed up to support the current and future growth of the greenhouse, industrial and residential sectors in Essex County. Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) for Chatham-Kent Essex Rick Nicholls welcomed local representatives and a group of Hydro One employees who have been working on the Leamington Transmission Station on Mersea Road 6 to an announcement of further expansion in the area. “The new transmission infrastructure will help businesses here grow and support the electricity grid to operate more efficiently to serve local and broader system needs,” said MPP Nicholls. Hydro One’s multi-stage investment of up to $526.5 million will provide enough electricity to supply a city the size of Ottawa by 2025, while improving local reliability. Hydro One outlined a multi-stage investment to increase and improve the power supply to Essex County, including an investment of up to $150 million in a new transmission line from Chatham to Lakeshore. “The need was right Peter Quiring, right, President and CEO of Naturenow, and into the future. Hydro One’s additional investments over the next several years include: • A new transmission station in Leamington, which is now in service. • An additional transmission station in Leamington, which will be in service next year. • Two new stations in Lakeshore, which are currently in planning stages. • Upgrading transmission equipment in Kingsville and Tecumseh. “A strong and reliable power supply helps our businesses expand, in turn, drawing more jobs to the Leamington area,” said Councillor Paul Tiessen. An additional $12 million will be invested in new smart technologies, such as remote switches and fault indicators, pole replacements and hazardous tree trimming to reduce the number, size and duration of outages in Essex County. According to IESO’s forecasts, electricity demand in Kingsville and Leamington is expected to triple from 2018 to 2026 due to strong agricultural growth. The IESO’s Save on Energy Retrofit program can help businesses reduce monthly electricity costs through incentives to upgrade various equipment and lighting. The IESO is also inviting proposals through its Grid Innovation Fund until February 14, 2020, for innovative indoor agricultural projects that could cost-effectively reduce electricity demand during peak periods. “Leamington and the surrounding area is an economic success story for Ontario. With the greenhouse sectors’ historic rate of growth, we need the energy infrastructure to support our industry, so we can continue to create new jobs and support the economy,” said Peter Quiring, CEO, NatureFresh. “We are grateful for Hydro One and the IESO’s work to increase power supply to the region and we look forward to their ongoing support as we continue to see business growth... This cold weather is why we build greenhouses to have healthy, fresh vegetables all year, “ concluded Quiring.
Santa Claus visits Leamington LEAMINGTON – Here comes Santa Claus, right down Erie Street Lane. More than 60 entries in the Leamington Winter Nights Christmas Parade preceded the main attraction of Santa and Mrs. Claus in a sleigh hitched to his team of reindeer Saturday night, Nov. 30. The parade was over an hour in length, starting at Sherk St., heading down Georgia Ave., turning on to Erie St. and ending at the Leamington Fairgrounds. Streets were lined with parade-goers all bundled up for the colder evening weather. The big guy in the red suit took a moment to stop at town hall to “turn on” the Christmas lights and observe a few fireworks. (Southpoint Sun Photo)
