Residents bring flood concerns to council

LEAMINGTON – With problems from crumbling breakwalls to dykes on the verge of collapse, residents of southeast rural Leamington have described dire situations for their homes and properties.

About 20 citizens concerned with flooding threats to their houses and yards converged upon Leamington council chambers Tuesday, Aug. 13 to describe their situations and hear of council’s plans to rectify the threat of natural disaster in their region. Items addressed on the agenda began with a report pertaining to the maintenance updates for the East Marsh breakwall, which residents described as being in a significant state of disrepair in multiple locations. The breakwall, running parallel to East Beach Road, serves 57 residential lots. Since the submission of an earlier report stating that no more work would be completed on the breakwall until a new assessment schedule is approved by council, three requests have been submitted to have sections of the breakwall repaired in front of residential lots.

Gerard Rood of Rood Engineering noted that he hopes the newest report focusing on the breakwall will be presented to council in September of this year.

“It’s taking longer than normal because breakwalls are not typical parts of a drainage study,” noted drainage superintendant Lu(Continued on Page 2)

Approximately 10,000 visitors came to Kingsville to see six ships in the 2019 Tall Ships Challenge, including the Iconic Blue Nose II, Empire Sandy, the Cooke Islands Picton Castle, SVT Fair Jeanne, The HMCS Oriole and a Canadian Coast Guard Ship.

Visitors to Kingsville dock on August 16-18 had the opportunity to tour the ships, explore the art and vendor markets, savour local foods and libations, and listen to amazing stories and entertainment. Kingsville was the only Canadian host on Lake Erie. Visitors came from Quebec, Colorado and across southwestern Ontario.

Tickets for a special Captain’s Dinner on board the Empire Sandy were sold out as well as tickets for the special cruises.

“The Hop On, Hop Off cruises were very popular. They absolutely loved the Windsor Symphony Orchestra that played on the Picton Castle. People raved about the dinner sail aways,” said Maggie Durocher, Manager of Parks and

Recreation Programs and Events.

“The volume of people was incredible and the whole festival was ran by myself and three Parks and Recreation staff. I think we did okay,” said Durocher.

“When you think about it, we threw a festival in a gravel pit,” she joked.

Durocher admits she learns something each time. This is the third Tall Ships event she’s been involved in (and the largest). “Of course there are things we’d do differently, but everything worked out and everyone had a great time,” she said.

Durocher said some guests were surprised that they had to pay an entrance fee to see the ships at the dock, but said people have to realize there are large costs involved in hosting the Tall Ships.

Durocher also stated that representatives from the Tall Ships Festival were impressed with the Kingsville festival and all the community involvement to make it successfull.

Kingsville Veterans Banner Project launches August 24

KINGSVILLE – Community interest in the Kingsville Veterans Banner Project shown by veterans and their families, organizations and businesses has continued. Approximately 100 banners will be raised this year from August to November in Cottam, Ruthven and Kingsville proper.

The 2019 launch of the Veterans Banner Project is Saturday, August 24 in the Kingsville Legion Ballroom, 145 Division St. S. The doors open at 10 a.m. and the banners will be on display offering an excellent opportunity for veterans and their families, sponsors,

Municipal Council and the public to closely view their banners before they are raised.

At 11 a.m., a Dedication Ceremony will be conducted at the end of the Legion driveway by Legion Branch Padre Rev. John Van Omme which will include a Salute to Living Veterans, A Lament for the Fallen and the unveiling of the banner in memory of LCol F.K. Jasperson, the Commanding Officer of the Essex Scottish at the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942. The Sun Parlour Pipes and Drums will be in attendance.

Two multiple sponsorships are worthy of mention: four banners from the

Cottam Rotary Club and 11 from Kendrick Funeral Home.

There are several unique banners this year, including those for War Horses and Military Service Dogs.

The Canadian Veterinary Corps, through veterinarian Dr. Richard Barnett, is sponsoring a banner in remembrance of the hundreds and thousands of horses killed in action over the last 135 years, particularly during World War 1.

Dr. Abby Jakob of Eyes is sponsoring a banner for service dogs killed in wars.

Her banner features Gander, a Newfoundland dog and the mascot of the Royal Rifles of Canada. Gander

gave his life when saving wounded Canadian soldiers during the Battle of Hong Kong in December 1941. In 2000, he was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal, the animal equivalent of the Victoria Cross.

Kingsville Town Council supported the project by purchasing spring-loaded brackets for poles throughout Kingsville. They also provided the resources to mount the brackets and raise and lower the banners.

Installation of the brackets and raising the banners will commence after the launch.

Residents in attendance were told that when the breakwall maintenance schedule report is complete, affected landowners would receive copies of the report complete with a proposed cost breakdown. Those with concerns or questions will be encouraged to contact the municipality’s drainage department.

Repairs completed as per the drainage bylaw in 2017 came to a cost of $87,336. Lakefront property owners who had armour stone installed paid about $130 each while agricultural landowners and the Road Authority covered the remainder of costs.

In response to receiving a petition requesting work to address drainage problems along East Beach Road, administration is notifying petitioners, affected landowners, the Essex Region Conservation Authority (ERCA) and multiple provincial ministries of the intention to proceed with a new drainage works.

In the event that the notification triggers no responses, Rood Engineering will be appointed to provide a preliminary report for the purpose of determining the amount of work required, construction alternatives for a drain and the approximate cost.

Also as part of the agenda, council received a report on the Marentette Marsh Drainage scheme and dyke emergency maintenance work. The report indicates that the Marenttette Breakwall exists in a state of disrepair in multiple locations while the interior dyke’s effectiveness has also been severely compromised by rising lake levels and recurring storm events. Ongoing and completed repairs as indicated in the report will come out to an estimated cost of about $825,000 — a sum not included in this year’s drainage budget.

Landowners have requested that their share of the costs of the maintenance and repairs — largely considered temporary fixes — be debentured. Administration recommended adhering to current billing practices — 30 days for landowners to pay their cost of the work once an invoice is received.

Director of infrastructure services Rob Sharon noted that debenture requests will have to be presented to council at a later date and noted that if a worst case scenario renders the total loss of value for involved lands, the municipality would be responsible for the debt involved with maintenance and repairs.

Chief Administrative Officer Peter Neufeld noted that administration is taking the breakwall and dyke maintenance issues seriously, explaining that upper levels of government are aware of the issues and that Leamington will be meeting with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs regarding the matter. At that time, it can be determined what obligations, if any, would be associated with the ministry.

Leamington kids competing in World Canine Disc Championships

LEAMINGTON – What started out as a four-yearold playing disc with his dog has turned into a family pastime taking the LogsdonFerreria family all the way to the Skyhoundz World Canine Disc Championship in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Corbin Logsdon-Ferreria, 4, of Leamington, invented some fun games with his 18-month-old border collie Archer in April of this year. “He came in one day and said, ‘Look at this cool game I invented.’ He was throwing dog toys in the air and Archer was making spectacular catches,” said Corbin’s mother Lindsay Logsdon. She videotaped his tricks and posted on Facebook, where friends told her she should try canine disc. “I didn’t know it was a thing until I looked up videos on YouTube and then my son became obsessed with it,” she said.

She admits he really couldn’t throw the disc at first and was too small to do some of the tricks, but

he watched the videos and practiced nonstop and asked to enter a competition. The family loaded up and travelled to Alymer in June for Corbin’s first canine disc trial. He placed second in the non-qualifying youth division, which goes up to age 16.

“That only fuelled this further – he became obsessed and now my daughter Gaia, 7, a Grade 2 student at Gore Hill Public School, was also practising with her three-year-old border collie Brigid,” said Logsdon.

Lindsay and husband Brian Ferrieria raise and train working border collies at their business, Caora Border Collies.

“Now I had two kids asking to do a trial again, this time in a qualifying capacity. He wanted his points to count this time,” she said.

The next competition was the Skyhoundz World Qualifier trial in Toronto on August 11.

“So, we loaded up our five kids and two dogs in the van and hit the road for Toronto at 4 a.m. The kids

did their thing and the dogs performed incredibly. A lot of older competitors shared throwing tips with the kids,” Lindsay said.

History highlighted in Kingsville Archives calendar

KINGSVILLE – The Kingsville Archives, in conjunction with the Kingsville-Gosfield Heritage Society, has produced an attractive history-based calendar for 2020.

The Kingsville Archives, located in the rear of the Kingsville Public Library, is operated by a small group of dedicated volunteers. Since its inception, the Archives has become an excellent source of historical information, including land records, and birth, marriage and death records. In addition, it is a safe repository to which local families can donate (or loan) their genealogical records and photographs, knowing that these items will carefully preserved.

The Archives relies on donations, grants and fundraising such as the calendar for day-to-day operation and equipment. This “limited edition” calendar includes historical photos of the area (Kingsville, Ruthven and Cottam), many of which have come from the Archives collection. Each page has been sponsored by a local business listed on the back cover of the calendar.

A map is also included to indicate the location of the photos and the sponsors.

The calendar would not have been possible without the support of these community-minded sponsors.

The event welcomed residents and their families to take part in a series of games in the facility’s outdoor courtyard, where well over 100 participants enjoyed stations including a dunk tank, fishing pond, ring toss, fish bowl game, water balloon toss, squirt gun challenge, cotton candy, face painting, a lemonade stand, guessing games and a barbecue. Program director Nelly Deslippe, Baron and other staff members organized and set up the carnival with assistance from high school students accumulating their volunteer hours. Deslippe explained that the event will likely become an annual attraction for residents, their families and staff at Franklin Gardens.

Local author to launch book’s second edition KINGSVILLE – The second-edition of “Steering Through It”, a book by local author Lynn McLaughlin, is set to be launched on Sunday, August 25 from 124:30 p.m. at the Pelee Island Winery, 455 Seacliff Dr., Kingsville.

Lynn has gone on a terrifying and fascinating journey after receiving a

life-threatening diagnosis and working through the recovery process with the aid of her close-knit family and the medical community of Windsor and Essex County.

Lynn began journaling the day she received the diagnosis and went on to write the book “Steering Through It” (2017) to help encourage others on their own journey

Rotarians do 24-hour marathon to feed the world

LEAMINGTON – Local Rotarians are dedicated to helping feed the hungry and that’s exactly what they did August 16 and 17 at Southwestern Ontario Gleners facilities.

Rotarians from Windsor and Essex County joined the Southwestern Ontario Gleaners in a 24-hour marathon of cutting, cleaning, dehydrating and packaging vegetable mix for distribution to community partners and relief agencies here and around the world.

Rotarians, family and friends began working at

the Leamington facility for 24 hours straight beginning Friday, August 16 at 4 p.m. until Saturday, August 17 at 4 p.m.

Rotary is an international service organization with more than 1.2 million members worldwide. Eleven local Rotary clubs participated in the project from Windsor, LaSalle, Essex, Harrow, Leamington, Kingsville, Cottam and Amherstburg.

Club members registered for two-hour shifts, but one Rotarian, Paula Talbot of Windsor-Roseland Rotary Club, signed up for the en-

tire 24 hours. Joining Talbot for the 24 hours was Southwestern Ontario Gleaners board member and Leamington resident Susan Ross.

“My biggest joy is helping those in need. I have been collecting pledge money leading up to this event so that it can be used

by Gleaners to purchase beans to supplement the soup mix and add much needed protein to help,” said Talbot.

Southwestern Ontario Gleaners is a dedicated charitable organization that provides free dehy-

drated vegetable mix and dehydrated fruit snacks for distribution to community partners and reputable relief agencies around the world.

Local growers donate the unmarketable fruits and vegetables. Volunteers carefully prepare the produce to be mechanically cleaned, diced, dried, and packaged for distribution.

This group from the Leamington Rotary Club were the first group of volunteers on Friday, August 16 who prepped potatoes from 4 to 6 p.m.

The beginning of the end

You know you’re of an ‘older’ generation when you look back at your childhood and remember spending a lot of it outdoors.

In my pre-high school days, I lived on what had to be one of the best roads on Earth to grow up on as a kid — Wheatley’s Pier Road. It’s a dead-end street, so there wasn’t a lot of traffic — making it an ideal location for some good ol’ Bryan Jessop fashioned road hockey. We also had fairly sizeable yards, which sucked for cutting grass but were ideal for playing baseball, touch tag, Red Rover… the list goes on and on. Behind the back yards was a nine-acre field where we caught all kinds of bugs and behind that a creek for fishing. But that’s not all! Beyond THAT a hill that made for pretty decent tobogganing in the winter, provided the creek was frozen solid enough to safely walk across. When it was frozen, it was as good a place as any for ice skating.

It was a pre-Internet kid’s paradise.

Equipped with empty pickle or other glass jars, a couple friends and I spent many hours catching different bugs in that field. Being perhaps a bit more on the morbid side than we realized, we always enjoyed catching a praying mantis or two and then feeding them live crickets. We’d also spend summer afternoons seeing how many bees we could catch without allowing any of the previous captives to escape. It took patience, speed and good timing, as you’d have to wait until all the bees were flying upward and away from the opening before you slammed the jar over the next unsuspecting nectar collector.

While the mantis was probably my favourite insect, the one I hated most was probably the cicada. They were never as bothersome as mosquitos or common houseflies — they usually hung out in treetops where they couldn’t even be seen. What they did that bothered me so much was declare the fast approaching start to the school year. You’re probably familiar with the cicada’s trademark buzz that starts around the second week of August. It’s a loud, monotone hum with enough sustain to rival a Gibson Les Paul.

I can only assume they produce the sound by rubbing their wings together. Most people hear a long, drawn-out “zzzzzzzzzzzz…,” but what I always heard in my childhood was “hey Jessop, your summer vacation’s more than half over! Hope you’re ready for school, ha ha!”

Oh how I hated going back to school. I hated back to school commercials and ads, I hated back to school shopping, I hated getting new shoes that had to be broken in… it was the worst time of the year bar none. For me, it was also allergy season, which didn’t help matters one little bit.

One of the first signs that made me realize I had become an adult was suddenly looking forward to Labour Day rather than dreading its arrival. As a kid, I used to wish that Canada Day was somewhere between early September and mid June — it seemed like such a waste for a holiday to be in July.

This time of year offers a perfect example of “the more things change, the more they stay the same.” It used to be dreading the return of math tests, essays, homework and having to go to bed early. Now it’s the return of bitter cold temperatures (they never seemed as bad as a kid), scraping the ice off the windshield in the morning and driving on snow-covered roads. It’s wondering why automotive engineers can create cars that parallel park themselves but can’t manufacture an electric motor strong enough to break a frozen window free of its frame at the drive thru. We bemoan the same time of year, only for different reasons.

One other constant, whether we’re 10 or 45, is September’s most faithful silver lining… at least hockey season’s coming soon.

Council selects Seacliff/Cherry design plan

LEAMINGTON – The next step towards traffic flow improvements for Seacliff Drive at and near the Cherry Lane intersection has been taken.

During its Tuesday, Aug. 13 meeting, Leamington municipal council was presented with a 91-page report on a traffic impact study conducted by RC Spencer Associates as well as four proposed options on the layout where the two urban streets intersect.

The study was the most recent step in the Seacliff Drive East Widening and Roadway Improvements Schedule that council adopted in September of 2013 about a year after Phases 1 and 2 were prepared and presented by Stantec Consulting.

The proposals include alterations to Seacliff Drive from just west of Cherry Lane to approximately County Road 33.

Planning for the project began after reports cited the condition of Seacliff Road and inadequate drainage, a predicted increases of traffic volume in the area, traffic flow pattern changes to the east of the urban centre, anticipated residential and commercial development in the northeast and southeast areas as identified in the mu-

nicipality’s “Official Plan” and construction of the East Side Arterial Road (ESAR), which intersects with Seacliff Drive East.

In a 2017 report, RC Spencer Associate suggested upgrades to the Seacliff/ Cherry intersection via the installation of full traffic lights at some time over the following five years. In the meantime, traffic signs — which are currently in place — were recommended.

RC Spencer’s recent traffic study includes suggestions that Seacliff Drive East be widened from a threelane cross section west of Cherry Lane to four lanes at Cherry and Danforth Avenue with a through/right turning lane and a left turning lane in each direction.

East of Danforth, a return to three lanes are suggested to Regatta Drive and beyond.

The study’s report encourages the relocation or rerout-

ing of the Sun Parlour Curling Club’s laneway opposite from the north end of Cherry Lane. Executive members of the SPCC including president Rod Squire attended the meeting to voice concerns and disappointment with the municipality’s plan to close off the main entrance/exit to their facility, citing that many of its users are seniors who cannot walk a lengthy distance from their parking spots to the building’s main doors.

Ultimately, council gave no consideration to Alternative Design Plans 2, 3A and 3B, which included roundabouts and/ or turning routes cutting through the current parking lot of Hair Café and DH&C Mechanical near the former Habitat For Humanity Restore site.

Design Plan 1 — the option recommended to and chosen by council — calls for a number of modifications at and near the Cherry/Seacliff intersection including a three-way set of traffic lights to replace the stop signs currently being used. John Tofflemire of RC Spencer and Leamington engineering project manager Alex Del Brocco explained that the main entrance/exit for the curling club is too offset from the north end of Cherry Lane to create a proper four-way

intersection, which would also be difficult to incorporate with one of the four traffic sources stemming from private property.

Squire requested that a decision on changes to the intersection be deferred until a mutually agreed upon alternative could be worked out between the municipality and the SPCC, but council elected to approve Design Plan 1 as presented.

“There is only inconve-

nience to our members with th proposals,” Squire noted.

Director of infrastructure service Rob Sharon however vowed that administration would meet with the curling club executive to work on an agreement for modifications that would be convenient for the SPCC. Most likely, the narrower, gravel laneway to the west of the building will be both paved and widened while discussions will be ongoing

towards reaching an agreement with the facility’s parking situation.

“It’s our full intention to come to the table with reasonable expectations to work these things out,” Sharon said. “There will be other ways to come to an agreement. We’ll work with them.”

The changes to the intersection, which will include medians between east and westbound lanes on Seacliff, will start next year.

The Bank Theatre Grand Reveal is Labour Day weekend

LEAMINGTON – Following an extensive $1.2-million renovation, The Bank Theatre is set to reopen its doors for shows beginning Friday, Aug. 30 with Russell deCarle and his band, Saturday, Aug. 31 with an intimate performance by Sean McCann, and an up-close performance with Billy Raffoul on Sunday, Sept. 1.

With funding support from the Municipality of Leamington, the community and stakeholders, The Bank Theatre has added brand new retractable seating and refurbished the lobby and bar, box office and accessible washrooms. The Green Room is also being renovated for performers.

Co-chair of The Bank Theatre Building Committee, Dennis Dick, says it’s been a long haul, but well worth the outcome.

“The Bank Theatre is the culmination of a dream by many, as well as generous giving of both monetary and in-kind donations,” he said.

“Hard work and cooperation

of many people in planning, time and money has contributed to this story of a community coming together to build this space.”

Opening the doors on Friday, August 30 is just the tip of the iceberg.

“Friday night kicks off with a bang!” said John Moran, Chair of Programming at The Bank Theatre.

Russell deCarle is known as the lead singer and founding member of multi-platinum countryroots group Prairie Oyster.

“I’m coming with my compadre, the great Steve Briggs on guitar, the equally stellar Russ Boswell on bass and my old friend and leader of Stuart McLean’s Vinyl Cafe Orchestra, the incomparable John Sheard!”

For 20 years, Sean McCann brought music to the world as a founding member of the renowned group Great Big Sea. With the release of his fifth solo album “There’s a Place,” he continues his journey as a singer, songwriter and now a sought-after speaker and

mental health advocate with a simple message: you are not alone.

Ursula Tiessen, President of The Bank Theatre, couldn’t be more pleased, saying, “Sean is truly a gem.

His message is important, his music always fun and the night will be truly special.”

John Moran is thrilled with Sunday’s show, saying, “We wanted to bring in two special performers to cap the Grand Reveal weekend off. Who better than Billy Raffoul, who we’ve literally watched grow up on The Bank Theatre stage and now is having an amazing career, including a tour in Germany this year! Billy Raffoul’s anthemic debut single “Driver” serves as a potent calling card for the 22-year-old singer, songwriter and musician.

Lonesome Lefty & the Cryin’ Shames at Two Creeks

WHEATLEY – Wheatley Two Creeks Association will welcome Lonesome Lefty & the Cryin’ Shames as the main attraction on Sunday, August 25. Mike Houston (a.k.a.

Lonesome Lefty) is one of Essex County’s finest fiddlers and he brings his love and passion for great old country tunes to the stage for your enjoyment.

The music starts at 6 p.m. with special opening guest artist Talia Vanden Enden from Stony Point. Lonesome Lefty & the Cryin’ Shames take the stage at 6:30 pm.

This is a free event; however, a hat is passed for donations to help offset the cost of the performers and the maintenance of this beautiful natural amphitheatre, park and trail system. In case of inclement weather, the show moves into the covered pavilion.

WHEATLEY – FIRST LEGO League Jr. is coming soon to Wheatley Library.

It’s never too early to discover STEM (curriculum based on four specific disciplines — science, technology, engineering and mathematics). FIRST LEGO League Jr. is designed to introduce STEM concepts to kids age 6 to 10 while exciting them through a brand they know and love – LEGO. FIRST LEGO League Jr. gives early elementary school students and their adult coaches the opportunity to work and create together while they explore science and technology concepts.

“Since it’s my first record it feels like I’ve been writing it my whole life,” he jokes.

“It truly is a magical weekend with something for everyone,” said John Moran.

“We also welcome back our volunteers and stakeholders by invitation with a special performance on Wednesday and Thursday, August 28 and 29 respectively. Plus we will have an open house on Saturday, August 31 from 1-3 p.m. It’s a big week and we’re all thrilled to be back in the theatre!”

CiB announces July Fabulous Garden Display winners

Sweet treat for Hospice

KINGSVILLE – Isabella Driedger, 10, and Chloe Driedger, 7, had fun making peach jam with their grandmother Shirley Driedger and decided to sell the jars at their grandparents’ business, Sunrise Farms Ltd., on Wednesday, August 14.

The sweet treat sold for $5 a jar and all money raised was donated to Erie Shores Hospice in Leamington. The two Jack Miner Public School students enjoy volunteering in their community. If sales went well, they planned to make another batch of jam to sell.

As reported by Kathryn Brooker, the Leamington Horticultural Society’s Communities in Bloom (CiB) Landscape and Floral Display Committee has chosen these four July winning gardens, which display the true pride and passion the owners have in their properties. It was a pleasure to tour these gardens and meet the homeowners.

Congratulations to the July winners. The next project for the CiB Landscape and Floral Display Committee is judging the nominations and picking three winners for the Backyard Contest. The committee is sure to have their work cut out for them.

Community Clothing Cupboard open Aug. 21 LEAMINGTON – The Community Clothing Cupboard and the Career Closet will be open Wednesday, August 21 from 1-5 p.m. at St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, 60 Erie St. N., Leamington.

Donated, gently used clothing is available for men, women and children of all ages, free of charge. As the items are donated, all sizes may not be available. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Leading with five wins were Sherry DeCaluwe, Richard Howe and Garry Hope at Fun Darts on August 9 at the Branch. Tied with four wins were Gerry Soulliere, Velma Hope and Pete Van Zetten – Jim McClellan, Rosemary Duquette and Gord Crook. Patricia Suy, Steve Acott and Jean Crook avoided the skunk with one win. Sherry was the only lady who doubled out.

Everyone is welcome to join the Fun Darts players on Friday evenings starting at 7:30 p.m.

Lynn Feher won three times and Judy Pickle won twice at the Meat Draws that were run by Gerry Soulliere on August 10. Gerry McCormick won a fishery gift certificate and the 50/50 draw. The other meat winners were George Imeson, Norma Dunmore, Brenda Hyatt, Brenda Wallace and Gerry Soulliere.

Join us at the Meat Draws on Saturday afternoons for your chance to win some great trays of meat. Tickets go on sale at 3 p.m. and the draws run until 5 p.m.

Progs golf report

The Erie Shores Proggers were treated to an overcast but still day on August 13. The humidity was thick as Texas toast. When the sun popped out, it drew the moisture from the ground and our bodies. If you think the mushroom farm smells bad, try sitting around 30 profusely sweating golfers in the clubhouse.

With the humidity, several people carted it. Two members, Gary Alderson and Kevin Shaften, rode together.

Based on their driving abilities (no pun intended here), they had a most difficult time playing cart golf. At one time, they were wondering if they would run out of gas, driving back and forth across the fairway so many times. A prime example of this ineptitude was featured where Kevin was on the 18th tee and Gary was on the 15th fairway, but they were playing the 8th hole.

Putting was showcased by Barry Miller. Somehow he double putted. The first touch must have been terribly weak so he hit it again to make sure. This was all done in one motion. I certainly hope the ball made it to the hole. It seems to me Barry accomplished this feat one other time. Luckily, Barry was not playing for the snake. Bill Conn has it.

Although this did not happen on Tuesday, I have to give a shoutout to Henry Hildebrandt. In the Monday morning senior day, Henry parred 12 consecutive holes, beginning at number one. I was amazed at the precision and determination to go that long. Henry posted a neat 77 and he’s only 79. Congratulations, Henry!

Winning team for $10 each was Carl Grossi, Neil Sawatzky, Bill Ruiter, Kevin Shaften, Mel Davey, Greg Dunmor, Claudio Sabelli, Bob Dick, Roger Cote, Neil Reimer, Alden Warner, Bill Conn, Ken Steingart and Dave Wilkinson.

First high plus was Ken Steingart with +11 ($20), second high plus was Don Gemmel with +9 ($15) and third high plus was Bob Dick with +10 ($10).

Skins at $40 each were won by Bob Dick on #2 and Richard Reive on #15.

Hendina J. “Henny” Swarts (nee Krueger): After celebrating her 100th birthday, Henny passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2019 at Franklin Gardens, Leamington.

Loving wife of the late Albert Swarts (1982).

Adored mother of Rika (Paul), Gerda (Heinz) and the late Netty (Ken).

Cherished grandma of Tim, Terry (Maria), Michele, Mike (Beth), Chris (Theresa), Kevin (Christine), and greatgrandma of Cody, Jesse, Emma, Tori, Lexi, Tyler, Isabele, Heather, Sarah, Teri, Ryan, Rachel, Adam and Bryan. Predeceased by her parents, Swantje and Geerd Krueger, and her brothers and sisters in Germany.

Visitation took place at Kendrick Funeral Home, Kingsville, on Wednesday, August 14, 2019 from 5-8 p.m.

In following Henny’s wishes, a private family service will take place at a later date with burial in Graceland Cemetery.

Beloved aunt to Megan (Asad) Mohammed, Debby (Rob) Wilson and Padruig (Lynn) MacIntosh, and very best great-aunt of Olivia and Emily Wilson, Aydin, Ilyas and Sameen Mohammed, and Aiden MacIntosh. She will be missed greatly as a faithful friend to Helen, Linda, Sue and Bonnie, as well as by her colleagues at Sellicks Equipment Ltd. where she worked for over 25 years.

Loving mom to her fur babies Walter and Spencer, and all of our pets that have passed on and are waiting for their treats.

John Wiens

John “Red” Wiens, 88 years, passed away peacefully into glory, with his family at his side, on Saturday, August 17, 2019 at the Leamington Mennonite Home.

Loving husband of Gert Wiens for 63 years. Dear father to Kerry Dick (Tom), Randy Wiens (Kim) and Rodney Wiens. Proud Papa of Ryan (Louise), Joel, Shane (Tara), Amanda, Lauren (Chris), Jared (Melanie), Jordan (Ainhoa) and Ashley. Very proud Papa Red to Jersie, Brielle, Dawson, Alexander and Thomas. Dear brother to Irene Clark, Jake Wiens (Louise), Harry Wiens (Eva), Ann Neufeldt (Harvey), Harold Wiens (Diana). Predeceased by his brother Nick Wiens and his sister Nettye Dyck. Red will also be dearly missed by many nieces and nephews.

John “Red” Wiens was born July 12, 1931 in Turtle Mountain, Manitoba, the fifth child in a wonderful Christian family of eight. Because of the Depression, the family sold all their belongings and traveled by train and bus to Ontario for a better future. They eventually settled on a farm on Watson Side Road in Wheatley.

John accepted Christ as his personal saviour at the age of 10. He attended school in Leamington and Eden Christian High School in Niagara, as well as Winkler Bible School in Manitoba. After graduation, John farmed 100 acres of tomatoes and soybeans. He married Gert (Enns) in Kitchener in 1956. He became a successful building contractor, building many houses in Essex County as well as a church and a motel.

The passion of John’s life was to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible. He has traveled thousands of miles distributing Gospel tracts.

John has spent the last 40 years of his life in the ministry of personal evangelism, teaching the word of God and mentoring those who were looking for direction and meaning to life.

Due to health issues in 2017, he moved into the Leamington Mennonite Home where he continued to make friends and enrich others’ lives. A special thankyou is extended to all the caregivers at the Leamington Mennonite Home for the tremendous care given to John.

Family and friends were received at Meadow Brook Church on Tuesday, from 7-9 p.m.

A Funeral Service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at Meadow Brook Church, Leamington, at 1:00 p.m. A private family interment will take place at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, Leamington.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to The Bridge Youth Centre or the Leamington Mennonite Home would be appreciated by the family.

JoAnne Catherine Serdowich (nee Bruner), 74 years, passed away Thursday, August 15, 2019 at Franklin Gardens Long Term Care.

Daughter of the late Carl and Ruby Bruner.

Survived by her brothers Ken Bruner and Ed Bruner.

Predeceased by her sister Ella May Faulkner. JoAnne will also be dearly missed by many nieces and nephew.

Orchard View wins 10th annual Challenge Cup

On Saturday, July 20, Orchard View Golf Club hosted the 10th Annual Challenge Cup versus Erie Shores Golf Club. This friendly rivalry between two 16-player teams is a Ryder Cup-style match play game.

The first six holes were Better Ball format, the next six were Alternate Shot and the final six were Scramble. Each team got one point for winning the six-hole match and half a point for a tie, for a total of 24 points to be won. After all matches were completed, Orchard View came out with a big 15½ to 8½ win, bringing their total Challenge Cup wins to seven of 10. I do enjoy affection but that will come with time and patience and I sure hope my next family has that.

As the regular season approaches, the field of candidates for 2019-20 rookie positions with the Leamington Flyers has been reduced.

The local Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League team hosted its annual Main Camp Friday, Aug. 16 to Sunday, Aug. 18, starting with a schedule of practices and full-length, round robin games for about 50 players divided into three teams.

The Leamington Kinsmen Recreation Complex’s Unico Arena served as the stage for a combination of returning veterans preparing for the upcoming season and AA and AAA bantams and midget travel players.

By Sunday, the group was reduced to 40 players, including veterans, who took part in a new three-on-three tournament and the camp finale Red versus White game.

“I think we had a great camp this year,” said Flyers head coach Cam Crowder.

“The players, especially veterans, set the tone with a high compete level and work ethic. I really enjoyed seeing a culture of hard working players who want to earn their spots.”

“We worked them hard

for the first two days and we wanted to give the guys some space to show their skills,” Crowder explained of the three-on-three addition. “It went well and the kids really enjoyed it.”

Although the Flyers have since sorted out their goaltending situation with former BCHL netminder Matthew Waite and Ryan Polidori returning from the 2018-19 campaign, up to five skating positions remain available, depending on the outcomes for team veterans trying out at higher levels. Currently, defenseman Colton O’Brien is attending camp with the QMJHL’s Quebec Ramparts while Postula brothers Brett as a forward and Brad as a defenseman are trying out for a North American Hockey League (NAHL) club.

Presently, eight Flyers from last year are committed to returning for the upcoming season who will be joined by the likes of Waite and former Western Conference adversaries Lucas Fancy (Strathroy Rockets) and Darby Lemieux (Chatham Maroons). Also on board as new Flyers will be Michigan high school all stars Joey Johnson and Dylan Montie as Jaydon Fetter is being welcomed back after spend-

ing a season in the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL). Earlier off season additions included Liam Hall, Spencer Lecot, Cameron Symons and Nicholas Beneteau.

“A lot of affiliations are about moving one 16-yearold, but this one is a lot more than that,” Crowder explained of the partnership formed between the Flyers and Firebirds earlier this summer. “We’re really happy about the relationships we’ve built with the Flint team.”

To determine who will fill the remaining open positions, which could be as little as one more centre and one more defenseman, the Flyers will turn to their preseason exhibition schedule.

The Leamington squad will visit the LaSalle Vipers Wednesday, Aug. 21 with a 7 p.m. start before hosting the same team Thursday, Aug. 22 for a 7:10 p.m. opening faceoff. This year, the Flyers will also embark upon a home-and-away series with the Chatham Maroons. Leamington will host its easterly rivals Thursday, Aug. 29 with another 7:10 p.m. start before heading off to Chatham Memorial Arena for a Tuesday, Sept.

Weapons of Grass Destruction take the lead

What a difference a night makes!

On August 15, there was another shuffling of the top three teams in the Leamington Canadian Tire Men’s Thursday Night League at Erie Shores with the Weapons of Grass Destruction now finding themselves in first place due to a huge 19-point gain, giving them a total of 179 points and a 5-point lead over the Flying Dutchmen who fell back into second place with 174.

The Fore Horsemen are now another five points back in third spot at 169, while the Grip It and Sip It team are in fourth place sitting at 165, which leaves them four ahead of the Duffers and Bluffers who are next at 161 points.

Brian Humphreys and Ward Hutchins led the way in individual low gross play, both firing one under par rounds of 34 to finish one stroke ahead of Nick Colasanti who had an even par score of 35.

Brian Fehr, Kevin Sawatzky and Darryl DiMilo all shot one over par games of 36, while Kyle Humphreys, Will Peters, Mike Ferreira, Greg Dunmore, Raoul Morin, Ryan Harder, Richard Lowes and Greg Zimney were all right behind with two over par 37s.

In the handicap flight, Duane Vlodarchyk was low finisher of the night with a net 4 under par 31, two net strokes better than the threesome of George Bergen, Mike Herbert and Greg Dunmore who had 33s. Dave Dick, Wayne Gillett, Mauro Paglione and Kevin Bunda all finished another shot back with net one under par rounds of 34.

It was another quiet night for skins with only six reported. Mike Ferreira, Greg Dunmore and Mike Herbert each made birdie skins, while Dan D’Alimonte and Derek Horop both had net skins while Bobby Dick picked up a net eagle skin on hole #6.

Four golfers break 80 at Erie Shores senior men’s golf In a game of straight golf by flights on August 12 at Erie Shores Golf Club, the winning golfers in Flight A were Henry Hildebrandt, Richard Reive, Matt Dick and Norm Beattie. The tournament showcased the top female baseball players aged 21 and under who represented their respective provinces of Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Quebec and Saskatchewan in a highly competitive, highly skilled and fun tournament.

Team Ontario entered the gold medal game versus their rival Quebec.

Quebec, having momentum from their 3-2 round robin victory over Ontario, started the final game with all cylinders firing, jumping out to a 5-2 lead after three innings and then increasing it to 8-4 after five innings.

Quebec was looking very strong in this seveninning game. Team Ontario showed some grit as they chipped away with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and then with another two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game. A walk-off single with runners in place ended the game, giving Ontario a 9-8 victory.

Hannah Chacko of Leamington plays third base and pitches for Team Ontario. Hannah finished the tournament with two RBIs and two runs scored.

She will start Grade 12

School this September.

“I’ve loved playing baseball ever since I can remember,” said Chacko. “It’s very fun, exciting and I love the competitive aspect! I first started playing with Leamington Minor Baseball when I was about five years old and I’ve played both travel and house league and am currently playing in the midget boys interlock division. Growing up, I had only ever played in a league primarily made up of boys.

There were a few girls that signed up at the early ages, but soon I was the only one left. When I started playing with Team Ontario three years ago, it was the first time that I had ever played on an all girls hardball team.”

Games were played on MBL regulation-sized ball diamonds – the same size diamond as the Tigers and Blue Jays.

“It opened up my perspective to the number of opportunities that are out there and that there are many outstanding female baseball players who love the game as much as I do and come from similar playing backgrounds,” said Chacko. “I’ve been able to travel across Canada playing baseball, visiting incredible places and meeting many great people.”

Jr. Barons win four OBA championships in a row

The Leamington Junior Barons pulled off a rare feat, winning their fourth OBA championship in a row on Sunday, August 11.

The locals have now won two Midget crowns (20162017) and two Junior titles (2018-2019).

The Barons opened with a 4-0 shutout of host Port Lambton on Friday evening, August 9, and then followed that with a dramatic 7-6 win over their local rivals from Belle River.

Late Saturday they fell 4-2 to Listowel for their only blemish of the weekend.

The loss meant they had to play three do-or-die games on Sunday. A morning contest against Port Lambton on Sunday saw the locals win again, coming away with a 7-2 victory.

This set the stage for another rematch with Listowel, where Leamington needed to win twice to claim the title.

The Barons came out swinging, winning the first game 101, and followed up by winning the championship contest 7-2.

Leamington pitchers in the tournament included Lucas Lamotte (two games), Dawson Iles, Kameron Wall and Cat Morin (two games).

Offensively, Ryan Wall was explosive, hitting five home runs (two in the championship game). Brandon Teichroeb and Curtis Rodriguez went yard once in earlier games. Second baseman Anthony Fehr batted .750 to lead all Leamington hitters.

Leamington’s dominant pitching duo produced some interesting stats. Lamotte had 27 strikeouts in the 14 innings he pitched. Morin threw 14 consecutive innings, winning the semi-final and then the final back-to-back.

“Kind of unorthodox “ said coach Chris Lamotte. “Our thinking was he had just stoned Listowell in the semi, let’s start him and see if we can get a couple innings out of him.”

The rest is history.

Some plays of the tournament included Iles’ running catch to start the tournament and Kyle Wall’s errorless play at first base.

With Leamington nursing a 5-1 lead in the championship game, Listowel loaded the bases with one out, but the batter grounded back to pitcher Morin, who threw to catcher Ryan Wall for a force out, who then threw to Kyle Wall at first for an inning-ending and rally-killing double play.

The team’s main sponsor is Caxton Mark and they were coached to the title by Chris Lamotte and John Wall. Other sponsors included Meteor Systems, Community Muffler and Howie’s Custom Coating. Senior Girls Selects slo-pitch team wins silver On August 9-11, the Senior Girls Selects slo-pitch team competed in the Selects Tournament hosted by Kingsville. The team had a great start on Friday and Saturday, but had a tough loss against Kingsville in the final to capture the silver medal. The team played with heart, determination and showed tremendous character all weekend, both in winning and losing. Graduating seniors this year are Chloe Jakob, Anna Giesbrecht, Iseonna Silliker, Melina Smiciklas and Amy Unger. Returning players include Katelyn Bergen, Jessica Bueckert, Susie Giesbrecht, Sophie George, Jaryn Harris, Erin Hopper and Elise Stammler.

“A” Flight third place finish for UE Enclosures Senior Girls

The UE Enclosures Senior Girls slo-pitch team wrapped up a successful season in Amherstburg on July 28. With an impressive 11-3 record for the season, the team entered the “A” Flight ranked third in the tournament. Over the weekend the girls played hard and ended with a 2-2 record and placed third in the tournament. The coaches would like to thank all the girls for their hard work and effort, both in practices and games throughout the season. Graduating team members are Emily Reid, Iseonna Silliker and Amy Unger. The remaining team members are Katelyn Bergen, Jessica Bueckert, Sophie George, Emma Goulet, Jaryn Harris, Kaitlynn Pickard, Serentiy Schroeder, Rachel Sinclair, and Elise Stammler. Liddell shoots lowest score

On Tuesday, August 13, there were 53 senior league members who participated on a somewhat warm, overcast day at Talbot Trail Golf Club.

The 85y+ division continues to inspire all league members. Their enthusiasm and effort is contagious. Dave la Bonte continued his dazzling play by shooting an outstanding 42. Gerry Becigneul came in second with an excellent 45. Praiseworthy scores were earned by Murray Cascadden, Fred Takaki and Erle Nash.

In the under 70 grouping, John Liddell shot an outstanding 38 to be the day’s top player. John obtained the bragging rights for the closest to the pin. His shot was a mere five feet from the pin. Len Snively drained a spectacular 20-footer on #2 to win the long putt. Three golfers – Omier, Shannanigan and Bummy – each shot excellent 41s.

A mere one shot back with superb 42s were Phil Humphries, Fred Michano and Randy Nash. Herb Reid and Kevin Jordan produced very solid 43s. Wiz and Arqy came in with gratifying scores of 44 and 45 respectively. Steve Longeway merited a satisfying 47.

In the 70-79 grouping, Dutchy shot a spectacular 39. Bobo scored an excellent 40 to place second. Terrific scores of 41 were produced by Ray la Pierre and Richard Humber.

Solid results of 43 were achieved by BW and Al Matthews. Paul (Gus) Brown shot a solid 45. Others who earned gratifying scores less than 50 were Dave Dent, Schmitty, Tom Sasso, Wayne Humber, Paul Harrison and Ross MacKintosh. Terry Bee, Conrad Babkirk, Mac Hyatt and Gary Benninger received noteworthy nifty 50.

Mike Wright, recently back from a vacation, didn’t show any rust as he fired an excellent 41 to lead the 80-85 division. Youthful Joe Vrtel came in second with a superb 46.

Tom Hyatt and Pete Daudlin achieved praiseworthy 48s. Steady-playing Walter Balsam fired a fine 49. Ed Woelk came in with a gratifying nifty 50. Neil Adamson and Andy Orsini also achieved very satisfying results.

The Jack Stein Memorial Tournament will take place on Saturday, August 24.

The Doc McLean Senior Invitational will be played on Wednesday, September 10.

This year the final founders – Reg Willett, Murray McLean and Earl Pinch – will be honoured for their dedication in developing Talbot Trail’s beautiful golf course. More information about this event will be posted at the clubhouse in the near future.

Inaugural Girls Pixie Slo-Pitch holds season wind-up

Leamington Minor Baseball Association had its inaugural Slo-Pitch Pixie League for 6-8 year old girls this season and it was a great success.

There were 24 players on two teams and by all accounts the girls and parents had a great time. The girls developed baseball skills and knowledge in a fun-filled and relaxed atmosphere.

The league ran for ten weeks and had its wind-up day on Saturday, July 20.

Special thanks to the sponsors, Tim Hortons and Woodside Greenhouses, and also to the coaches, Jessica Remigio, Andrew Derksen and Matt Kettle, for all their time and effort in making this inaugural Pixie League a success. Organizers hope to see many of the Pixie league players return next year and continue to build their love of baseball.

Several local pickleball players participated in the first annual Corn Festival Pickleball Tournament in Tecumseh, August 10-11. They showed well, bringing home gold, silver and bronze medals. The Leamington teams all play regularly at the Kinsmen Recreation Complex.
